Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Enjoyed this album. Track 7 fav
I have been familiar with Common People for ages now, and it is an absolute banger. The rest of the album doesn't live up to it, but it's not bad either. Just average.
I think this is sort of surf rock, soft rock pop with a kind of moderately interesting lyrical side. That sounds all good from my perspective but it doesn't reach as high as I had thought it might. It kind of stays OK with a couple of fairly interesting parts here and there. But in the category and the time period and and and... I just don't think it knocks it out of the park. Not really. It is not bad in any way, I suppose it just kind of "is" in a way.
Good Brit pop album
great
this guy needed to jack off before recording this
Good vibes, messy asf, some radio bangers in there, love underwear !!
6/10.
This thing is just. So. British. Consider me charmed, Mr. Cocker. The album cuts are solid, but two very strong singles do most of the heavy lifting, I think.
- klingt die meiste Zeit ziemlich moody, instrumentell jedenfalls 2,75-3 / 5
First time listening to this album. Ok music. Did not seem like it was anything special.
Feels like decent british rock but nothing too special 3/5
I was liking this more and less as it came through. It was good but I don't think it's love. Wondering if I'd ever reach for this album again and not thinking I would. But wasn't looking to turn it off, either.
This gives me more Cure vibes than Britpop. Most likely the whiny vocals and prolific use of keyboards (both things I'm to a huge fan of).
Listening to this album felt like I was being subjected to a band that writes incredible music while letting some drunk, horny emo dude write all their lyrics and vocals. I'm not necessarily saying that in a bad way, however. Some of the songs were decent. Others had me saying "what the hell is this?"
Запись не безынтересная, но с ходу в моё сердце не проникла.
Was not familiar with this one. Some great songs in the tradition of kinks and xtc.
A fine album with some standout tracks but not something I’d revisit in full anytime soon. A solid 6.5/10
This was a fun album - I think I recognized Common People. I liked it more than I thought I would - fun & interesting. Some of the songs blended together but it was overall pleasant to listen to and have in the background.
I never heard that band before. A fairly good album overall.
So much whispering I thought it was ASMR. Seriously though, it's all right. There are some well composed songs here, I'm just not crazy about Jarvis Cocker's vocals at times. And Britpop continues to not be my taste, though in fairness I spent most of the 90s deprogramming myself and moving away from pop in most of its forms, especially when it appealed to the mainstream masses. No regrets on that choice.
Don’t care at all. This album made me take a 3 week break.
Well this is interesting. Very surprised this album came out in 95, sounds about 10 years earlier. Hmm. Idk. Not offensively bad, so yeah. Meh.
Ok 3/5
3 - rounding down I think, but a decent album, I unfortunately had it on in the background
Liked it! Sound like a lot of current so called post-punk records but without being boring copycats.
Pretty good album, but Common People is obviously the best song and at the end of the day Shatner did it better.
Disco 2000 is a banger.
Very theatrical, much Brit pop. It’s okay, but it’s like very horny if that makes sense and I’m good lmao
Good album. Nice rythym but no big songs or a wow factor
Another album where I know the core players, but the rest of the team is unheard of. "Feeling called love" (I won't stylise) and "Underwear" are the new scouts, but Disco 2000 is still the star. Its chant-able chorus means I'll hear it at every work night out and wedding for the rest of my life, but it contains a wistful melancholy. Sad but upbeat is the domain of all my favourites... Lyrically, I'm all with it, but vocally I far prefer when Jarvis is shouting, rather than whispering like he's trying to shag the listener. Highlight: Disco 2000. An all-timer song, but alone that can never lift an album in its entirety.
Pre: It's funny to get this right after Gorillaz. In my heart they're the winners of the britpop battle! Plus they're the only one I actually would want to go see at least, despite not listening to too much Pulp other than a handful of tracks over their albums. Post: Cocker's lyrics are either bang on and excellent, albeit cheesy, or they are just a complete whiff for me. But lyrics aren't everything and thankfully Pulp are excellent but on the whole this didn't hit. It's a shame I didn't find anything new to come back to from this listen though. It's a strong vibe but not one that does that much for me. Shockingly, I may not like Britpop all that much outside of the hits. Highlight: Disco 2000 is still a complete banger
I don't think this album holds up quite as well as This Is Hardcore personally, and although the standout songs are great (Common People is still just an angry and acerbic as ever) the rest tends to become formulaic as Jarvis Cocker is by turns neurotic and a sleazy lothario. Overall I'd prefer to listen to the other one.
I don’t think I’ll ever understand the hype around Britpop. I’ve listened to plenty of Britpop albums over the years, and most of them land somewhere in the middle—never outright bad, but rarely impressive either. Different Class fits right into that pattern. It’s not offensive, but it’s also not particularly special. Just another solidly average album with maybe a track or two that stands out slightly more than the rest.
2.5
Средне. Понравилось две песни, Но мотив сложно запомнить, переводы интересные
Pulp, and 'Different Class' especially, may be the most proto-2000-indie-pop sounding thing of the '90s. This album really carries so many of the traits that the genre would boast come its 21st-century heyday. I'd say this is most apparent in the song 'Common People', with its unpredictable vocal inflections, ambitious song structure, and quirky change-ups. This one song feels like an ode to Springsteen in many ways, all the way from the very clean, uplifting music to the blue-collar-worker-themed lyrics. Also, the production on this album is peak pop production - especially in this lane. It's what kept me engaged throughout this whole thing. 'I Spy' was unbelievably grand, and definitely much larger sounding than the contents of its lyrics would lead you to believe, It sounds like it should be soundtracking the climax of an old western. That groove established on the instrumental break on 'Something Changed' was pure jangly goodness. The drumming and drum fills are incredible all throughout this album, they sound great and carry a lot of punch - just listen to those snares on 'Sorted For E's & Wizz'. 'FEELINGCALLEDLOVE' also had many heartland rock-sounding moments, especially with the strings in the chorus. Unfortunately, and as I had anticipated given my thoughts on 'This is Hardcore', the vocals and lyrics ultimately ended up ruining the experience for me. They just didn't click. Parts of it reminded me of The Clash's Joe Strummer, especially with 'Disco 2000', but like way more irritating and tedious. 'I Spy' was a great song, vocally even. That is until this guy felt the need to go into this tacky spoken word piece that kills all the momentum the song had built up in its first half. And I just don't like the direction many of his vocal melodies went in, they were very stale, like on the song 'Something Changed'. They weigh down these incredible instrumentals. It's like, the vocals aren't TERRIBLE, but they don't, in any way, complement the music...not for me at least. And while there is some wit to be had here, I found very little of it actually quotable or funny. I did like the vocalist on the opener 'Mis-Shapes'; this song stands out here lyrically as he conveys a lot of optimism and hope for change in this very energetically youthful way. And, again, 'Common People' was at least fun to get through. It's weird, I don't usually hate this vocal and lyrical style, but the rest of the music here was just so incredible, that it made the vocals feel so bland and flat. That is to say, these instrumentals deserved way better.
Middle of the road
I missed brit pop because we were busy back then. This is great.
"Common people" is good! Rest is OK.
Entertaining. Didn't love it, but would give them another listen.
This album feels ludicrously Enlgish, and includes too many homewrecker songs.
3.5 tbh
This is like pre-alpha Artic Monkeys
I like the songs that have less talk and more singing. 3/5
Meh
This was quite fun, a couple of bangers, but the rest was fairly forgettable
It has moments that are pretty good, but overall just doesn’t really land.
Should be my style but something didn't quite click 6/10
I'm just not crazy about Pulp
Not the biggest Pulp fan, but this wasn’t bad.
Kind of basic brit pop I feel. Morissey/ velvet undergroud type voice that couldn't hold a melody. Good drums
It's staying in my collection for a relisten because of its variety and ability to engage me. But it gets knocked for lyricism that really turns me off.

I’ve listened to a few Brit-pop albums throughout my time doing this. Most not so great, but some not terrible. If we consider The Bends technically in that genre, then that album is amazing, and by far the best I’ve ever heard from the sound. But one name, or album, that I consistently saw pop up as one of, if not the best Brit-pop record ever made was Different Class by Pulp. So I hoped once it popped up, I would be in for something real special. I had high expectations, which I know is never a good thing to do. After listening to this, I’ll go out on a limb and say this is one of my biggest disappointments across this whole thing so far. I’ll preface the rest of this by saying two things. One, I don’t really like this genre all that much to begin with. I have a pre-established bias which probably set this up for failure from the very beginning. And two, this album isn’t horrible. But again, given the expectations I was going into this with, I was really hoping for something good. For an album released in 1995, it sounds surprisingly stuck in the 80s. From the mixing and even the lead singer’s voice. It all sounds like something that would have released five to seven years prior. I think the vocals especially contribute to why I don’t enjoy this very much. And in terms of art and glam rock I’ve heard in the past, the songwriting is rarely comparable. I had hoped the energy from the opening track would carry on throughout the rest of the listen, but it really doesn’t. I so badly wanted to like this more, but I have to be fair and honest with myself. Rating: 6/10
It's okay, I would have preferred the 3:20 version of Common People
Not bad. I wish I had been more aware of them back in the day.
Eh. It’s not bad just not knocking me over either. I actually like the William Shatner version of Common People much more than the Blur version. I’ll give them an extra star just for putting that song out there so Shatner and Ben Folds could work with it later.
There's a fluctatingly creepy feeling to almost every track on here besides "Common People" and "Mis-Shapes", not helped by the lyrics. (Especially on "Pencil Skirt.) But despite this, a certain desperation to the music kept me engaged throughout the album. For that, it was an enjoyable experience.
las primeras canciones no me gustaron mucho, pero la segunda mitad del disco se puso mejor y más copado :b
Pretty good.
I can appreciate the musicianship, but ultimately this isn't really my thing.
Witty lyrics and interesting songs. Not my favourite era of music but managed to find a fair amount to enjoy while listening.
Really enjoyed it. I was familiar with a couple of songs but hadn’t heard the album.
Pulp was a band I had heard of but never listened to. I always saw them put in the upper tier of britpop bands with the likes of Blur, Oasis, etc. This was my first real exposure to them and this listen of Different Class showed me that Pulp deserves the praise they get. It's a strong album with some of the signature britpop workings. I dug the solid vocals, simple beats and lines and all of it worked from start to finish for me. A couple solid singles and no real low points on the album. I continue to be impressed with 90's brit pop as I'm more exposed to it. Looking forward to any other unknown gems to keep popping up on this list. 3.49 stars
I enjoyed a few tracks on this one too, must have missed it while enjoying punk and alt rock in the 90s.
I liked the music and energy enough, need to listen back to lyrics at some point.
Pulp - Different Class When I heard the first track of the album, I expected it to be just another country album (at this point, I've never heard of this band in my life), but all of a sudden, the song changes into more of a rock ballad, and it took me by surprise, and that pretty much goes for the rest of the album, it starts slow and soft, to then building up for a catchy and yet fulfilling chorus. Something that really didn't get me to like this was that some of the songs sound uncomfortable to hear due to it sounding horny in a way once you see the lyrics to it, thankfully not all of them are like that. In the end, I liked it more than I thought it would be, so this is good! 1.- Mis-Shapes = 8/10 2.- Pencil Skirt = 5/10 3.- Common People = 8/10 4.- I Spy = 9/10 5.- Disco 2000 = 9/10 6.- Live Bed Show = 6/10 7.- Something Changed = 10/10 8.- Sorted for E's & Wizz = 7/10 9.- F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E = 7/10 10.- Underwear = 6/10 11.- Monday Morning = 8/10 12.- Bar Italia = 8/10 FINAL SCORE: 7.6/10
I feel nothing, it was okay.
It's cool. It's fun. Nothing really stood out, but nothing was repulsive. Felt like a decent pop album with a bunch of upbeat rock elements.
Bin zwiegespalten.
Pleasant, listenable, but nothing exciting or attention grabbing. I listened twice and can't really recall a sound.
A grower. Too much fun to fade into the background.
Good band, good music. First time listener.
I'm not a Pulp girlie I fear!
Common people is sick, overall echt 🆗
I was previously only familiar with "Common People" but I would say the whole album is worthwhile. It may not be something I would seek out but I would not mind hearing it again.
eh
It's a nice album, but it becomes boring pretty fast after some repetition along the songs.
i think the first few songs are fun and give kind of an alternative rock vibe but then it gets a little weirder. i think the album is filled with different types of songs but i just like how fun it is.
I've always heard of Pulp, but this is my first listen. Don't think I'll pursue it - it's not bad, just not me. Meh.
Honestly, I thought the first track was pretty good but as I progressed through the rest of the album I just could not for the life of me care for this. It ain't even bad but like a majority of this album felt so sleeper and boring. Idk man maybe there's something I'm missing here but I do wished that I had liked it more. Top 2 Mis-Shapes and Disco 2000 No bad songs but there is a whole lotta mid 2.50-2.75/5
Never heard this album before. Not bad
Basically solid
First half has me ready to do a Jan 6
not a big fan of the vocals and a bit bored, too noisy at times. otherwise cool enough, especially the slower songs. favs: common people, i spy, live bed show
I love this album - lots of great, catchy songs.
Abwechslungsreich. Ich kannte nur Disco 2000. Der erste Song ist auch ok.
Not unpleasant but unremarkable
really enjoyed this. "underwear" - im in a bit of a shock, im like woah the arctic monkeys are trying to sound like THIS band , really noticeable in this song
Definitely better than Oasis. This connected the dots between Bowie and Muse, two artists I listen to a lot.
Better than expected. Quite a few genres getting mixed on this one and its mostly pretty fun. 6/10
I've never heard a Pulp album, so first for me. This is alright. Kind of a lesser than Bowie or Smiths. Monday Morning was fun. I probably won't listen to this again, but I'm not mad about having to listen. Middle of the road here, 3.
I was today old when I learned that Disco 2000 was by Pulp. It's that title that you hear on the radio and know quite well after a while without knowing its name or the artist. Well, it looks like this album is one of the better products of the Britpop wave. Still nothing I would relisten on purpose.
mais um álbum extremamente mediano das ideia
I like Pulp, but my fave tracks are on other albums. The songs are bright, witty and polished but tracks like Something's Changed and Underwear appeal to me more than the anthems.
enjoyable. 3.5 stars
Pleasantly surprised
It's incredibly bland, to be honest. You can tell this band LOVED Bowie growing up. Other than that, It's not special at all. They're trying to be Bowie-ish and Oasis-ish at the same time, but not quite nailing either. It's OK, overall, I guess, but I was surprised when I looked at the run time after the last song and discovered it was "only" 52 minutes. It seemed much longer.
Must be the OGs of, “They’re big in Europe”
This was different and had some moments. I liked Common people and Disco 2000.
This was a perfectly fine listen. Moments here and there were enjoyable. I liked Common People and Something Changed. But outside of those most of this sounded pretty similar with not a lot of ear-turning standouts.
I enjoyed this. Good energy and personality…dare I say a lil swagger. Kind of blended some new wave with more of a rock feel. Is that fair? 3.5 but I’m not sure I’m quite there to go 4.
Common People nearly pushed this to 4 land on its own but I don’t think the entire album is worthy of that rating. Still an enjoyable listen. 3.5/5
не стал дослушивать ваще не моё первый трек на 4чку а так тоска зелёная какаета
Entertaining but a bit tiresome after a while. Couldn’t listen to it all in one go but did enjoy a lot of it.
Good dance songs, liked the Bowie vibes
i think it's better than blur it's one of those albums/bands where i think i could really be into them if i listened to them lots but that also might not be true
One of the bands I think defines britpop for me. This album has a time and a place.
Not a bad 90s alternative album. Common People is a great track.
Very interesting. Liked. Reminded me of something I can’t place.
This was a decent album. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it really was hard to nail down exactly what it was. Overall, I liked it.
Every time I started getting into it, the lead singer did something whack. 3.
Sounded to much like the Cure for my taste
Sir please stop moaning in the mic
Yeah I don’t love but I don’t hate it, goes alright
I find myself writing the same thing for these albums, it's not bad or good. This is a very adequate (and a bit weird) pop rock album that does the job, although this one sounds really good production wise. But come on give us something substantial to chew on. 1001 albums to hear before you die, my arse.
Common People is a masterpiece, the other songs were good but not that memorable
A lot of these Brit bands sound the same to me, although this was a little bolder and sexier than usual
The album was ok. Generally good music, but nothing really stood out to me. I think they had a good sound. Nothing extraordinary, at least from my perspective in the present and not when it came out. Favorite song: "Disco 2000" Best representation of the album: "Common People"
The music is catchy and good but I can't get past the omnipresent angry revenge sex vibe.
Catchy songs. I already knew "Common People" and "Disco 2000", but the rest were new to me. Didn't blow me away, but I like their sound.
I was skeptical when I saw this was a British rock band I hadn’t heard of, but this was actually not bad.
Pretty hit or miss for me, the new wave/indie sound was nice and there were a couple of great songs but the rest didn't really stick
This album is chock full of tracks that bear striking resemblances to massive pop hits that came out in the next 20 years after it's release. It's clear the sounds here we're hugely influential. Some of the riffs sound as if they're going to be a cover of some song or other that I hear on the radio, but they always take a slightly different direction. And the album is great, but it's just soooo close to being incredible. If only they had stumbled into the slightly different versions of some of these licks that went on to become superhits
Gillar ett par av låtarna, tex Common People. Men det är också nåt med det där lobotomerade tonfallet i en den här typen av britpop som jag tröttnar på väldigt snabbt, lyssnar helst inte på ett helt album.
Meh
Tämä on ehkä siedettävin näistä saman muotin birt-pop-rock orkestereista vuosituhannen molemmin puolin. Disco 2000 tuo paljon muistoja mieleen ja nostaa yksistään arvion kolmoseen. Pari muutakin hyvii biisiä joten vahva kolme.
Af öllu britpop dæminu fannst mér Pulp alltaf leiðinlegust og hún er alveg smá leiðinleg á þessari plötu líka þótt hún innihaldi slagarana þeirra sem maður þekkir og raular með. Það togar hana upp í hærri einkunn en ég efa að ég setji hana aftur á fóninn.
Maybe it's just not up my alley, so I don't wanna negatively review it based on taste. But it did feel a little repetitive. I liked the new waveness and some of the lyrics but overall not my jam.
Rating: 6/10 Most of the songs are just decent, the highlights are amazing though. Choice cuts: Common People, Disco 2000
This is nice, but it's very, very similar to the Cure. The big-ticket tracks ("Common People" and "Disco 2000") are really catchy, but the rest of it is pretty ordinary. It's also a bit long and very heavily mannered, but not in an especially fun way (like e.g. Bowie). The guy's not that good a singer, and they don't quite have the sonic diversity of Travis to cover up for it. Bottom line: actually pretty Common.
🎧British AF. You can’t deny Jarvis Cocker’s panache and droll delivery, especially on Common People which is an absolute banger. Other standouts: Bar Italia, Mis-Shapes. Still, this is not quite my cup of Britpop tea.
Breathy/whisper rock annoying at times. Odd blend of sorrow and cheer in the music.
I liked this one. I think I need to give it another listen with headphones on, though, as I really couldn't pay attention to the lyrics while driving. There was a mention of breasts and curves, though, which piqued my interest. Overall, I heartily agree with my co-reviewers assessment that this is sort of a poor-man's Bowie, but that's not a criticism. 3.5* with a distinct possibilty of another .5 with a relisten. Not that you'll ever know, though, as there's no way to edit reviews.
Classic cheeky camp Brit pop - very nostalgic and reminiscent of ‘when England was good’. Reminds me of pints, classism and schoolboys trying to look down the teachers blouse. Girly blokecore. Also why does young Jarvis Cocker look like James Acaster?
as i got to the end i wished i listened a little closer as i had begun to really enjoy it
pretty enjoyable but I guess I was not vibin as expected
Better than what I expected.
Two good songs: common people and disco2000 the rest is kinda meh
I enjoyed it.
I'm a fan of most 90's Britpop but wasn't familiar with this band or album. I got a bit of a Bowie vibe from the singer at times. Overall, nothing really jumped out at me but not an unenjoyable listen - would probably listen again.
Very very good- just needs to grow on me I think- going with a high 3.5- rounded down.
Not a band I am particularly drawn to. This was no exception (6.5) ★★★
I think it starts really strong, but that the quality dips a little towards the end
This could be a grower. Nothing sensational but enough to pique the interest. But every class is different.
another meh british rock album
This started out better than the last album, then got worse, then got better again. Honestly, I'm not great with lyrics especially on first listens, but this guy is cringy af. The instrumentals are really good though so bumping up.
78% Best: Mis-Shapes; Disco 2000; Something Changed Must-Hear? Must hear to get the full scope of Britpop, but other than that, almost but not quite
Not really crazy about much of anything about this album. 1995 was a long time ago and really fairly different - musically - than now, so I may have had a much different opinion of the band at that time. Their appearance is... interesting, but I find the music and stage presence kind of boring.
Meh
- Pretty fun! Started off strong - Not much to say though, ultimately... some hits, some misses, had a good time listening but probably won't relisten, etc etc
I could’ve sworn I had gotten this album already. I realized I had made a second project for weekend albums, which I used for exactly one day - and this was the album I received. I wasn’t too impressed on the first listen, and while it’s still not really my thing, I was more forgiving this time around. It has a unique sound to it and a decent amount of variety that saves it from being completely boring. I think two listens was enough for me, though.
We are really stretching the limits of credulity here. How does another “fine” English band make the list of albums that we must hear before we die. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with this album it’s just that it’s so just fine. If there hadn’t been so many other “fine” English bands on this list I could perhaps see why this one is on the list but that’s not the case. Meanwhile no Loui Armstrong. WTF!
Solid Brit pop.
Helt ok, 3 stars
This is a cool album, good 90s alt. Common people is a hit, but I also enjoyed, mis-shapes, feelingcalledlove, and bar italia
Two Pulp albums out of 1,001 and I get them both within six albums of each other. They call Pulp glam rock, which I did not understand when reviewing This is Hardcore but I get now. Disco 2000 is a great song. This album has a much more upbeat feeling than This is Hardcore. I know they were super popular but I don't remember it at all. This is like pop Nine Inch Nails. Much better than expected, I was pleasantly urprised by this album.
Cool
This is one of the better examples of Britpop. I love the feeling Pulp brings in some of their songs and I like a decent chunk of their work. Common People is a great song.
No complaints. Solid
Great for Common People alone.
Kind of a Bowie/90s vibe. I liked it.
It's like Elvis Costello met the Cure. It's music for the scene in the film where the boy chases the girl through the streets in a whirlwind romance.
Seemed like it could be the soundtrack to a pretentious indie movie I don't want to watch. Not entirely bad, just forgettable.
Ok
Litt kjedelig, men Common People drar opp
Kind of generic bri'ish pop/rock Lead singer mediocre and/or mixed too low Many of the songs were samey 3
A musical blind spot for me, but enjoyable. I imagine if I were more familiar I would like it even more. It. sounded more like 80s new wave (e.g. the Cure) vs. the 90s Britpop it was described as (e.g. Oasis)
Wow, this guy is really down bad! Some of the songs are pretty good but other ones are just a lot of whispering. Sometimes it's too serious and it's not great at that. A real mixed bag. Favorite songs: Mis-Shapes, Underwear
This had the potential to be good. Some nice riffs and rocking grooves -but there was also too much forced angst, drama and urgency with the vocals that didn’t seem even a little authentic.
Um, fine? I wasn’t paying that much attention and I’m not going back right now. It was fine in the background—clever, probably, but I wasn’t clocking it.
I wasn't a big fan of this album. It's not bad but it's just not that good to my ears either. I've never been a big fan of British pop from the 90s (or any other time to be honest).
Dramatic storytelling
It's a good album but it lacks an edge for me that would take it to the next level
The irony of the fact that Jarvis Cocker grew up quite comfortably in a family with a politician mother and had their biggest hit claiming to be poor is not lost on me. Riding the wave that was Britpop, Pulp were ok. Not great, not terrible, just ok. They were in the right place at the right time.

The Bowie-esque theatrics are nice, but this album felt kinda bland to me, not sure why either. Think this one needs a re-listen for me to appreciate it further.
Love a couple tracks on here, common people, pencil skirt and disco
This bloke is trying to sound sexy the whole time and honestly it just comes across as creepy. Some of these songs are really good, but as a whole package I’m not completely sold. Favorites were Common People, I Spy, and Something Changed.
3.5
Favorite Track: Disco 2000
This is a lot better than the last one. The songs are much more dynamic and the singer is doing a lot more. Very very british though. Getting a lot of bowie vibes. Ok song actually is basically a 60s/70s bowie cover album Common people rocks - sick power pop. Production is big on this album - great to listen to in a car Very flamboyant and like theatric vocals. Not really my thing but it's more interesting than the verve.
Musically average brit-pop with questionable lyrics. Nothing incredible or groundbreaking was done on this record in my opinion.
I don’t like britpop that much, but this is pretty good
Never heard of Pulp but from this album they sound like pretty generic David Bowie / The Cure inspired Brit prog rock. Honestly the lead vocalist sounded so much like Jermaine from Flight of the Conchords (definitely inspired some of their sound) I had a tough time taking them seriously.
Third album I've listened to. Lol, it was the most British thing I've ever heard, I liked it tho.
Fantastic album, though I kind of feel their 1998 album is a bit better.
Not sure if I'd heard of this band before...enjoyed the album.
Never listened to this before. I liked the second half better than the first.
Musically this is not bad and it has provocative lyrics but overall didn't really do it for me.
Never heard this band before…interesting lyrics.
Better than the other one they have on here, but still meh at best
The tracks are fun but forgettable like one of those cooking videos. I will not return to this record. 3/5
Very Bowie inspired and good album.
Me gusto. Si pudiera le pondria un 3,5 pero bueno. Me sorprendio no habia escuchado nunca a pulp, si bien hay alguna canciones que medio no me gustaron considero que es fecil de escuchar. Me da la sensacion que el vocalista es parecido a bowie
Kind of like New Wave David Bowie . . . but not as interesting.
Its a solid 3.5 Is Jarvis an egotistical nerd? Probably but I like him. Saw him wandering around a festival once, looking normal. Thats my claim to fame with Jarvis Cocker
Common People and Disco 2000 are classics, I don’t love the other songs as much though
People Sorted For E's & Wizz Underwear
I expect it would be unfair to dismiss this record as being a product of the already cliched Britpop movement, this being released at the peak of said phenomenon, as well being temperamentally buoyant and gregariously British. It sounds like Pulp as a band had been around quite a while already and had arrived at this creative identity fortuitously. The record still does feel very well rooted in the landscape of the era, like part of a maniacally invasive species of plant enveloping the ecology until its self-begot extinction. Even if this record was not one of the noxious weeds, it's hard to distinguish it from the rest. Coincidentally, and unfortunately for Pulp I hate Oasis!
No strong opinions on this one.
“If fashion is your trade, then when you’re naked I guess you must be unemployed” Some ups, some downs, some hanky panky
That was pretty good, but not super memorable.
Okay-a bit too boppy
3.4
Good. I mostly ignored Pulp in the 90s. I dint turn them off, just didn't seek them out. But listening now, there are some very good songs. And some good ones too. I'll listen again.
Idk, the peppers were in the oil and i didnt hear it very well
Brit rock
Light British pop-punk
Pretty good. The kind of Britpop I like. It can get pretty cheesy, but they clearly have an interesting perspective. I can't think of other artists at the time quite like them.
Not being a Brit pop aficionado or even fan really, Pulp isn’t a band I have much experience with. My first ever Pulp memory is actually a really good colleague singing Disco 2000 on a karaoke night and he did a killer job. This album is voyeuristic and lascivious in a way that makes me slightly uncomfortable. There are lots of interesting hooks and it’s got catchy music, no doubt. I understand this album is the high watermark of Pulp’s career, and I can see why. I do love the album cover. It perfectly represents so much of the classism the band grapples with in these songs. There’s lots of misogyny in the lyrics too though, and I don’t care for that at all. Conflicted on this one. I’ll split the difference and go with a neutral 3 I think. Seems fair.
Yeah i dont know. Britpop is really not for me.
Some pulp classics on here
Pretty interesting but not really my style. I thought the lyrics were the best part exploring different tropes of life involving sexual relationships and class separation. Nice additions of orchestra in some songs and very big sounds. The singer has a cliche singing style that gets old pretty quickly but is made up by his lyrics.
Day135 - much more brit pop on here than i expected. i liked this better than blur not as much as oasis
Not really my speed but not terrible.
I thought I was really going to like this :(
ekki slæmt. þarf líklega aðra umferð enda gáfumannapoppsskotið. 3,5.
I had never heard of Pulp before, but enjoyed this album. While I wouldn't put them on my list of favorite Britpop bands, it was nice to hear the clear influence of New Wave and Punk. The music is a bit better than there lyrics, although there are some good lines in there. Overall, a fun listen.

I kind of enjoyed this one. I'm sympathetic towards the 90s.
Good but not great. The singer is obviously influenced by David Bowie. I don't like that way of singing. Favorite song: common people
I'm sorry to be consistently down on these 80's and 90's BritPop bands. But they do nothing to me. Musically it is OK. Vocally, there's nothing captivating about them. Lyrically? Maybe it was less cringeworthy when it was new, if you were in UK. The more I worked through the album, the less I liked it. Whatever, 3/5
I am going to be kind and round up to 3 from 2.5, since they had a couple of songs that I liked. Some of their songs just seemed to make no sense though.
Nothing too bad or nothing too great
Liked some songs, others were ok. Didn't care for some of the lyrics.
Had a great time with this. Some real keepers from the album that I look forward to re-listening to in the future. I'm not sure has a huge range as an album, so it's not the most exciting thing to listen to from start to finish. Still a big fan, though!
Goed goed
3.5 Wasn't previously familiar with anything this album or these guys by name, but happy to have heard them. That being said, I was a little bit bored. Maybe it will grow on me with future listens (added Mis-Shapes, Common People, and Disco 2000 to the rotation) but for now slightly north of fine is the best I can do.
Several enjoyable old tunes here. Good to hear them again.
Common people bangs, the album art bangs, the rest was fine too
Was familiar with some of the songs, but was never aware who the band was. Some pretty good songs on this album. Some songs I definitely didn't like.
"common people" gives this album an additional star
Better than a lot of the Brit schlock on here, but not especially compelling to my ears.
Solid British 90's rock. Unfortunately I didn't find it groundbreaking or something where a lot of the songs stuck out to me. Easy enough to listen to but something I probably won't come back to any time soon.
I enjoyed this one. Had some bops. I thought it over used a certain tone and chord progression which made some of the songs feel way too similar.
very entertaining. i added a few songs to my playlist, but overall not a vibe I'd really enjoy on a regular
I have heard of the band Pulp but have never really listened to them. This was a nice surprise. The frontman Jarvis Cocker's voice reminds me of David Bowie. I can also hear Mikel Jollett from The Airborne Toxic Event. I enjoyed what I heard. Some very nice britpop.
nice easy listening but not that "exciting" to me
Refreshing after the last couple crappy albums. Solid, a good sound, but not many super memorable tracks 3* Highlights: common people
It's the moody other brother of Oasis and Blur. Darker and a bit more punky than lush, it didn't capture the same interest from me. 2.5/5
Not bad. Better than a lot of Brit Rock this has given me.
Album # 49
Felt almost too grandiose at times I guess? Maybe I'm just a little tired of all the britpop that I've been getting lately. "Common People" and "Disco 2000" do stand out, though.
This album was surprising and subversive. I was completely creeped out by Pencil Skirt. I’d listen again, for sure - this is a layered work and has me intrigued.
…haven’t listened to this whole album for about twenty years , it was my least favourite pulp album back then , and still is . The four big epic clever pop hits are amazing classics, but the rest of the album bores me !
Avoided this at the time as it was everywhere and heard it at every student disco night. I enjoyed the kitchen sink drama style lyrics - very relatable and familiar. Not one I'll go back to but not one I'm going to avoid anymore.
I can't do anything with the 90s, now I know why again.
I totally forgot about Common People and I love the bridge into chorus. The whole album gives villain vibes. I think his creepy voice would be fine if he didn’t overuse it. I hope the rapey things were role play and consent was given before
This isn't my usual style to listen to but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. This surprises me. Interesting combination of styles of music and it makes sense that it's '90s, sounds like it.
it's so britpop...
Liked common people, rest was just ok
Pretty repetitive (kind of like "Bright Eyes"), but not unenjoyable. Very much British alternative rock of a certain moment.
On some songs, I couldn’t decide if this band wanted to be like Phantom of the Opera or Michael Jackson’s thriller album. It’s not the worst we’ve heard, but it’s not great.
Not bad, had a few catchy songs.
I didn’t buy this album immediately but after hearing the great hit singles from it I eventually bought it. Overall a good album which I still like. Feeling Called Love (easier to type minus the full stops!) is for me the standout track and one I never tire of. It’s of its time particularly some of the lyrics which must drive some of the modern woke’ists mad. My opinion of Pulp is largely derived from regularly listening to Jarvis Cocker on a Sunday afternoon. Not only did he play a lot of good music (and for me discoveries) but he came across as a thoroughly decent chap. His lyrics to me are observations of what goes on in real life in thoughts and deeds and not necessarily attributable to him. At the time whilst Oasis and Blur were battling it out, Pulp were at the other end of the spectrum making different and original music and this album is a fine example of this. If asked to explain what Britpop was all about then I would hold this album up as a great example.
Not really bad, but Britpop bands have never reached their predecessors from the 60s, 70s or 80s and so only a few songs are still relevant today.
Interesting. New to me. Reminded me of David Bowie.
this was fun and slightly nostalgic and has one of the best songs ever written - common people. it truly is fantastic, and i can listen to this again in its entirety, especially during summer. common people would be a 5 on its own, however the rest of the album isn’t the same level but still really good.
Nothing stands out. Another alternative Brit band that was popular there and not here
First album I got from Pulp was really bland, but this one was much better. Feels like it could go up a star with more listens
Pretty decent a few weird lines, but other than that sounded pretty good!
Not too bad
Less poppy than Oasis, Less disco than Blur, a good mix and blend of guitars and beats with more experimental sounds to give it a variety not reached by the other 90s Brit Pop bands. Common People is super catchy. I more enjoy the Shatner/BenFolds version, but see why they liked it enough to want to pay tribute. I Spy gives off the feel of a Leonard Cohen ballad, silky smooth and covered in cigarette smoke. Disco 2000 reminds me of Laura Branigan's Gloria. Something Changed evokesThe Smiths with wispy keyboards in the background dancing with Johnny Marr jangles on the guitar. Underwear is a track that I could see Arctic Monkees using as a template for a good portion of their tunes. Rounding out the album with the manic energy of Monday Morning breaking into the cool, soothing denouement of Bar Italia. Well crafted from start to finish. Well plied hooks and eminently easy to sing along to
I liked it. Extremely repetitive and derivative of other genres, but pleasant enough.
I really enjoyed most of the music on this one, but the lyrics got so uncomfortable at some points. 3.5/5
I'm always intrigued by British and US artists... And how they break into each other's charts. Some are huge hits in their own countries...some in both. Very surprised to see how this album was a huge success in GB but not here. Maybe because grunge and garage rock were so huge at this point in time? This album has more of an 80s British sound to me. I thought it was ok, but nothing was pulling me in saying it was great. It was my first time hearing it or anything about this band. Nothing here telling me to pull it off the shelf again.
The hits are really good the other songs a bit mmmeh
Very 80s vibe to it. Two songs on the album that I recognised. The social commentary of the album is spot on for the time. The Disco 2000 is a song I remember playing on the TV from my youth.
3.5/5
This was alright, not too bad but also wasn't incredibly impressive to listen to. It was a nice background album to listen to though.
Back in the mid 90's Common People and Disco 2000 were played so much on the radio that I grew to loathe them, especially Common People. Because of this I wasn't looking forward to delving into this album. So it's not a bad album, but it's not a great album either. I find the entire thing fairly meh. I'm not sure what the hype is, but then I didn't get it back when it was big either.
58/100 Mis-Shapes 6/10 Pencil Skirt 4/10 Common People 7/10 I Spy 3/10 ⭐️ Disco 2000 8/10 Live Bed Show 5/10 Something Changed 4/10 Sorted For E's & Wizz 7/10 FEELINGCALLEDLOVE 3/10 ⭐️ Underwear 8/10 Monday Morning 6/10 ⭐️ Bar Italia 9/10
For Britpop, this album was decent. Mostly songs that weren't terrific but a few that stood out a little more. Wouldn't turn it off if it were playing, but also not something I'm going to reach for either. 2.5/5
Good brit pop, never heard the album before.
Not bad. Not for me, but wasn't terrible. Lyricist was really horny.
favs: mis-shapes something changed sorted for e's bar italia seems like average 80s/90s british man pop to me, but was decently fun w/ some questionable lyrics
This album explains a lot. It is the missing link that connects 80s new wave to 2000s alt-pop movement.
Not bad, would listen again.
I know I’ve had a pulp album on this list before but I couldn’t for the life of me tell you anything about it without just comparing it to this one. If I was a British teen in the mid 90s this probably would’ve been on repeat but for me it’s just totally average 90s Brit rock.
Common People, DJ 2000
I like the sound of this album, it comes off sort of Broadway to me. I appreciate the use of strings and organ to mix up the more standard rock sound. It sort of reminds me of a less electric, early Muse.
Knockoff Bowie mixed with a “I’m quirky and you will never understand me” vibe and some sprinkles of sexy monster mash.
Fine!
Maybe I just don’t like Brit pop
Common people is an all time, rest of the album is give or take but still good
3.4/5 Best Track: Disco 2000
Decent alt rock
3.5 I really really liked a few of the songs on this. And really didn’t like some other ones.
IKinda fun. Felt more like US 80s.
Overall -OOO hitting us with some classic Britpop sound -how did they manage to capture the prior 30 years of rock sound ?? -these would be great guitar tracks for Guitar Hero -I want to give if a 3 but I feel like I have to give it a 4 because it’s just so impressive to me how well they blended so many different sounds Common People -I very much enjoy the guitar -this feels worthy of a movie soundtrack -this sound would be great in guitar hero I Spy -Oh it’s giving disco ?? -this is so creepy and fucked lmao -the strings ???? -this is so unnecessarily dramatic and I love it Disco 2000 - this is all abba riffs - one specific ABBA song I can’t place - this song is so interesting, it gives great rock guitar yet classic disco sound Live Bed Show -again the sounds are all so different and sound so good together Something Changed** -the strings and acoustic fuck Sorted for E’s ** -the blend of like rock and disco pop is insane and like electronic Feeling Called Love -Oh this dude is a sick fuck Underwear -I don’t like the message I don’t think but I actually really like the song Monday Morning -Ooooooo that little rocking on the pick ups Bar Italia -almost some blues influence
It was okay
