Reviews (page 8 of 13)

Enjoyable. Disco 2000 and Bar Italia were great.

This was a surprising great album! I enjoyed it but there were a few too many average songs to be classified as a 4 rating. A high 3!

A couple of nice songs, but I can't get over how pretentious Jarvis Cocker is. Kind of forgettable.

It was good. I didn't expected that I'll enjoy it that much though lot of songs sounded very similary

548/1001

2.8/5 Some great tracks on here

I definitely got baited by the Wikipedia summary. I thought this would be a life changing album. It’s kinda your typical British rock album. It’s still a good album but I think I just had higher expectations. The 1 caveat, is that Common People is an absolute BANGER.

Для брит попа довольно бодро, обычно я ебал слушать

It was ok. Typical Brit pop/alt/rock from that era. Nothing to get excited about.

Enjoyed. Singer sounds like he'd be an obnoxious person.

Some problematic lyrics again. But an alright album overall. Some good, some bad. Probably won’t listen to again. Skipped the last few songs honestly to get back to my heavy WUBZ. 😂

Couple songs in here to bob your head to but nothing show-stopping in my opinion

Common people is a classic, but the whole album didnt really pull me in.

Includes a couple of great Pulp songs but not a different class

An enjoyable romp as the world's least likely lothario acts out his fantasies through the medium of music. 3*

underrated Britpop band. has some good tracks on it, but not my style!

Alright vanilla rock. I got their other album a few weeks ago and this one was better. Not sure why this band has two albums on the list.

Lots of great parts, some that didn’t move me. Fav songs are common people, underwear, feeling called love, and disco 2000

musikalisch ganz ok, lyrics sind grenzwertig, bei "i really love it when you tell me to stop, it turns me on" war ich raus

Not my fav

Out of place for British pop/rock in the us in the mid 90s. Good writing. Solid performance. Production doesn't quite hold up for today. I can see how it went unnoticed in the us in the 90s.

Ihan ok, lyriikat varmaan teräviä ja älykköjä (menevät minulla hukkaan, kun harvemmin jaksan sanoja tarkasti kuunnella). Hauskoja melodioita ja hyvää jumputusta välillä.

Rather meh. None of these songs stuck with me. Also none of them grated on me or otherwise made me want to skip them. Sort of like a beige wall I guess.

3.75/5 - Initially found the perversion of the lyrics intriguing if not slightly sexy, but then the whole "breasts" thing got old, and it lost me. Really fun listen, there's a few songs I would definitely listen to again.

Look, here's the thing. This album is diverse. It's interesting. I don't know what it is about Jarvis Cocker, but his voice annoys me. I can't explain it and I won't and you can't make me. The closest I will come is he feels like Brit-Pop Brendon Urie at times with the overly theatrical vocals. That isn't the comparison anyone is hoping for. Except Brendon Urie, of course, who I'm sure would be pumped with the comparison.

Ikke lige migrer fedt faktisk

I think to give this a 5 you had to grow up with this album in the UK. Hearing it for the first time, and not as a Britpop fan, brought nothing to me beyond another whisper-sung album about sexual misadventures. 3⭐️

Again, I can see the appeal. A very talented band, great voice and lyrics. It is not something I would choose to listen to. It is fun to listen to something I would never choose on my own.

Some classics here and Jarvis' voice is very engaging. Thematically seems a little one dimensional but also very easy to listen to.

Not THAT bad. I've never heard of this album or band before. I assumed I'd hate it way more, but it's actually alright. Nothing incredible, I'm not sure I'd wanna keep any song on repeat, but maybe I'll give a few of them a listen here and there. It was a nice time, I didn't suffer throughout this, which is kinda hard to come by lately, honestly.

I really loved "Common People," and the rest of the album was fine, but nothing else really stood out too much (maybe Disco 2000). Loses a star for some weird, rapey lyrics.

Sterotypical Brit pop sound - enjoyed Common People and Feeling Called Love. Pencil Skirt put a bad taste in my mouth that colored the rest of the album for me

Fun enough. ★★★

So I'm currently listening to it and I can't tell why it's considered so special. Must be British people glazing themselves again :/. It's something I would put on for background noise, just for someone else to ask if we can put on real music. People who listen to this and the beatles probably hate on nickelback. They won't let us have cool things, damn. Nevertheless it's listenable, it surely isn't bad music, just to be clear. It's just obviously average to my ears. 5/10

At first I was hesitating and not liking, halfway through it became enjoyable, specifically after the song "Common People". Not a bad listen!

This album has a strong sound and an all-time classic song (Common People), but there’s also something about it that kinda makes my skin crawl. Jarvis Cocker has a weird anti-charisma going on.

Not my usual, I'll need to revisit a few of these tracks when in a different headspace

Boring, many notes

fav: Common people ofc Other than that, the rest didn’t scratch that itch and honestly had me cringing. Music was great tho, lyrics didn’t hit. For me personally it is probably more 2.5/5 than 3/5.

It’s whatever man. Idk I didn’t have any strong feelings about it either way

Not my style of music but did enjoy a few songs. My favourite was common people.

Grew up with this album but have always struggled to relate to it. Some objectively great songs though...

I find this album to be incredibly overrated. Common people isn't a bad song and I think it's probably the only one that doesn't feel like filler, that said I still don't find it particularly groundbreaking. Maybe I'm just too middle class for this but I don't think it's making as big a statement as people make it out to be.

I enjoyed this album. I found Cockers voice similar to Smith from The Cure. It was a very good brit pop album that I would definitely listen to again.

Some decent tunes, some not so decent. Overall I thought it was just alright.

Favorite track: Common People

Levyn hitit on 5/5, mutta Pulp ei muuten sytytä. Ihan ok. 3/5.

Fun, poppy 90s Britpop. The music is easy on the ears and varies in moods, all being gentle. Great sequencing of tracks and overall feel to the record. Would be happy to listen to this one again.

Lead Singers voice sounds familiar? First song giving Ok-Go Some soundtrack, like song as well.

Enjoyed a few songs. Very 90s sound

Very good album and I can see why it is held in such high regard, all songs are cool and dynamic, lyrics make it deep and vocals are unique. Would recommend.

No me atrajo mucho, pero más que britpop se escuchaba experimental, en un futuro le daría otra oportunidad

Some very big highs on this (common people, disco 2000, underwear) but can't say the perverted songs work for me. Aware he's doing a bit but they're not great

I didn't love all of the songs. But I have found a favorite. Monday morning.. so yayy

I know this album is held in high esteem. I found it all a bit bleh. Musically it is solid but also very similar to blur and Oasis.

Classic rock. Beatles esc. Pretty good, nice listen

Some weird songs but overall good

not bad 3.4

Mid except a couple of bangers

Very indie/english Very nice 7.6/10

Surprising. This is Brit pop rock. This feels like an album that has or at least should be sampled a lot. The riffs and beats are great. I imagine this is great live.

“Disco 2000” was a lot of fun!

7/10 Nogle gode numre Gode tekster

couple of good songs - all similar to common people

Good story teller, didn't care for his voice, instrumentation was good

this starts out so strong with Mis-Shapes, immediately stumbles with Pencil Skirt, and the pattern continues every time the band veers off into anything about women or sex Weird album to rate. Leaning more positive than negative, and on an individual level some songs are great, but as a holistic album it's hard to recover from an initial fumble like that if I rate this lower than a 3 it's because I got too annoyed at F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E for having an irritating title with irritating spoken word parts that marred a song I liked otherwise

Enjoyable but not a whole lot I'd come back for

Not really my vibe. Find Jarvis's voice quite annoying although Disco 2000 is a big tune. Around a 7

Not bad, reminds me of Bowie

I do be liking it low-key but why is there a man breathing hot breath in my ear 😔

Standouts Common People Disco 2000 Live Bed Show

Pretty good production, enjoyed a lot of the songs but there was also a a bit of filler. Liked it though

Honest disclosure: just before I got into music proper, I turned off a Pulp Saturday morning TV performance in disgust, because the pop performances took up time that could have gone to cartoons. This must have been 1993 or 94. Another honest disclosure: on the return leg of a fishing trip with my friends and their dad, I first heard Common People on the top 40. Having just started to get into guitar music, I didn’t really care for the synths. I don’t think I could then distinguish between this keyboard cycling basic chords and that of other lesser chart music of the time. 1995, obviously. By 1996, I liked it and the album, of course. Pulp are nothing, if not a lesson in waiting things out. Four albums that may be dreadful or just very poorly recorded. How this led to them recording three good albums in the 90s, well-recorded ones, where Jarvis sounds like an actual singer, I don’t know. Not only well-produced, but sonically consistent, each one sounding like a complete suite of songs, the albums distinct from each other, yet always sounding like the same band. These are not the qualities of the band in the 80s and there was no suggestion then that they would have a significant moment like Different Class. The band no longer shambolic, even if they’re workaday; the singer singing instead of croaking; the songwriting generally tight and coherent. And relevant. A lesson in waiting things out. I’m too old for most of it to be relevant now, but Jarvis Cocker was too old at the time anyway. A man in his 30s shouldn’t be getting on like that. And it is clear from recent performances that he is a little embarrassed by the sleaze of Pencil Skirt and Underwear. In the 80s output, such pervsion is occasional. On This is Hardcore, its corrosive qualities are recognised. On We Love Life, he has grown out of it, becoming a much more agreeable person, even if the music is no longer as good. However, on His and Hers and Different Class, this version of Jarvis is chronic and, with time, it has become a little shabby. Shabbiness is fine for your teens and twenties, but it loses its romance over time. Pulp’s is certainly a story of arrested development, of time, and of time passing. 3 Of those albums that I had any affection for in the first years of my discovering rock and pop music in earnest very few have aged badly for me. Be they verifiably terrible works of art, an apology will be made for them in my nostalgia. Pulp‘s Different Class is one of the exceptions to this rule. I positively revered this album when I was a teenager, and many of my friends still do. One just spent a hundred quid on the 30th Anniversary boxset. But for me the shine has long come off this record. I don’t know why that is exactly. I suppose part of it is that Jarvis‘ ‘look at me I’m a pervert’ shtick, edgy in the 90s, has become cringeworthy in the intervening decades. I think Jarvis himself probably winces listening to stuff like Underwear and I Spy and particularly Pencil Skirt. Part of it is that overplaying has told on some of these tracks, especially Disco 2000 which I liked well enough back in the day but after years of hearing the single mix on the radio I shudder to hear it begin in any of its versions. I dislike that nothing guitar riff. Which raises another issue. There are six members in Pulp and yet there is little musical identity once you set aside Jarvis’ voice and, perfectly matched to it, the Phoenix Nights chic of Candida Doyle’s keyboards. Disco 2000 is one of the only guitar parts it’s even possible to notice - and it is rubbish. The drums just blast along. The bass is subdued in the mix beneath the keys. It is telling that, of their later (famous) albums the album that best showcases the different musical identities of the instrumentalists in Pulp is We Love Life - the worst of those albums by quite a distance. Different Class is still not bad of course. It’s an album with some irresistibly catchy tunes. Common People remains not only iconic but an exciting listen. So much of the music on Different Class is a dull, clumsy, clutter though. I once thought this a brilliantly consistent album and now I can’t see how I ever made that mistake. 2.5/5

Common People is such a great song. The rest of the album was ok. I wouldn’t turn it off if it was on but I wouldn’t seek it out to play either.

It’s a good album. Not my top as I’ve never been a big Pulp fan. 3.5 stars

Favourites: Mis-Shapes Common People Disco 2000

Also moderately enjoyable, a good album

Ultimately this is whisper singing way too often by an obsessive guy. I found it interesting that people say Pop Girls talk about their exes too much, but none of that energy is brought here. But the ending of sexism isn't on that record, though the male gaze is a bit heavy handed. Some songs are catchy and well made but most often I was a bit bored and not that surprised.

So torn from how much I love the song Common People and how much I hated the Pencil Skirt lyric "I love it when you tell me to stop". Think in general it's a decent album with a few great songs and a few truly awful songs. I wouldn't listen to the full album again- probably wouldn't relisten to any of the songs I didn't already know. Favourite song: Common People Least: Pencil Skirt

Nem az én stílusom, de vannak jó számok benne.

Oh. That was depressing. This was one of my fave albums for years, but it just didn't resonate with me any more.

Listens: 2.5 Standout Tracks: Common People, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E., Underwear Never heard of Pulp before. Sort of post-punky, a tad new wave, but it also sort of reminds me of Arctic Monkeys and Velvet Underground/Lou Reed (even though they aren't British). The first time through, it felt very bland and samey sounding, but its grown on me slightly over subsequent listens. I've got very few complaints, but I don't think this is going to enter any sort of rotation.

Ok. Very British. I knew Common People.

Great in parts, ok in others can see why people enjoy it though 3.5*

It just wasn't my thing. Reminded me way too much of velvet underground but it seemed many songs felt similar

Pretty catchy hooks.and melodies. Noice is a bit monotonic.

Surprisingly decent.

Pencil skirt was one of the more creepy tracks I've heard. obviously intentionally, but still. Common people is of course a classic, even though i think the cover might be better. The music is pretty good throughout, but again nothing I would be putting on frequently

Its kinda weird, but i like it.

Common people is great, some close to early Radiohead vibes that I liked, overall didn’t love but didn’t hate this. I think I’ll come back and listen again

Second album of theirs I’ve listened to on the list, there are a couple songs here that I really like such as I Spy and underwear, and if more of the songs were like that I would like this album more. Overall I think this album drags a bit in places, the performances are good but at times it was a struggle to get through and truly enjoy the music.

Somewhere between 3 and 4, but not a 4

Eh, this is fine. Kinda sounds like discount Third Eye Blind. It's certainly not bad, I've just heard other bands do this style better. 2.8

I love the working class.

Pulp are good craic to be fair

Didn't think I'd like this as much as I did, one of these days I'll learn not to judge a book by it's cover. Class stuff, dead cheesy, lyrics are both naff and genius at the same time.

Pretty tuneful actually. Just too bad that the way the singer chooses to portray himself is as a giant creep.

Disco 2000 kappaleen ansiosta ⭐️⭐️⭐️ tähteä.

Definitely the kind of album where the hits carry it. I like it overall though. Common People is a 5 on its own.

I like I Spy. It sounds creepy.

Coolos

Listened to it a day late- not terrible but some songs are just awful (I spy), I really liked Disco 2000 though.

This album has a funny, comical vibe to it. The singer can't wait to not only get you, but also your mom, into the sack and makes it known. I enjoyed the song ""A Different Class"" , ""Pencil Skirt"", and ""Disco 2000"". This was a fun and felt silly.

Overall great, but Shatner & Joe Jackson's Common People may be the best version of the song.

Musically this is fun. However,I don’t know if this persona of Jarvis Cocker is a character or if it’s close to his real personality and ethos, but it wore thin lyrically after awhile. (I also forget how rape-y some of that 90s alternative music was.) “Common People” is a banger though.

Slow kind of boring

First couple of songs are good. Then decent

Was decent but not my type of music.

Not Bad, but got boring after the First few songs

Absolutely love Common People, the rest of the album is a bit boring & repetitive!

Some catchy tunes

I mean I know this is britpop, but like wow, right out of the gate it's so British that it's actually Bri'ish. This one was completely new to me. It's ok. Not great, not terrible.

First time listening to a Pulp album, I rather enjoyed it

Felt like I was listening to a hornier Bowie.

Good vocals Interesting instrumentals Nothing really stands out Couple of songs I recognised

I get the appeal and the singles are strong but as a whole I'm not really impressed with Jarvis Cocker's schtick

Enjoyable listen. Loved Disco 2000

Choć "We're sorted out for e's and wizz" przykuło na chwilę moją uwagę. Ok/5

borde gilla det mer med tanke på hur mycket det påminner om både The Aeroplane Over the Sea och Twin Fantasy, men men. ändå lite som var riktigt najs :)

I like it. Very textured but cohesive. Definitely worth revisiting. 3 .3 outta 5

текст убивает, терпеть не могу подобные "сексуальные" лирики от мужчин о женщинах

Sounds like 70s bowie in the 90s, it was allright.

This is an interesting one. It has a bit of a David Bowie/Tim Curry vibe that I like. It's a bit creepy and dark and includes scandalous themes throughout. It's musically interesting and I enjoyed it overall. To me the album sounds very 70s/80s though, so I'm surprised this came out in '95. 7/10.

I liked a lot of the instrumentation. But, I really didn't like the whisper singing

Very listenable...always a message about class or sex

I have to give this another listen

Ihan ok, jissain biisissä Olavi Uusivirta -viboja (tai toisinpäin).

Don’t like British rock

I enjoyed this enough but it was forgettable

Distinctly British and pretty listenable, although only Common People was memorable by the evening after listening to it hours prior. It’s like a c+ album for me, good not great

I didn’t recognize the band name but I did know (and like) the song Common People so enjoyed the album. Probably won’t circle back to the album again but if it came on due to some algorithm, I’d listen again.

Some great songs but just an ok album to me.

Another band with which I had no familiarity, and what a pleasant surprise this album was. I thoroughly enjoyed it in its' entirety.

I find I like the music more than his vocals. Again, its not bad, but not the best album of the 90s. A few parts that were annoying.

Pretty OK album - very Bowie-ish and hadn't realized I had heard a few songs off this one before.

A very unique sounding band. I found a few of their songs a while back. Common People and Babies, off the His N hers album are their 2 best songs, imo. There are a few other tunes that are pretty solid, Mis-Shapes, Disco 2000 and Sorted for E's & Wizz. These guys are alright and didn't mind my listens, but really not something that I found to be must listens, outside of Babies and Common People. 3

3.5 After (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, this may be the most well-timed album on this list so far. My review is a bit late, but just two weeks ago, I couldn’t have told you a single song by Pulp nor much else about them besides the fact that they’re a ‘90s Britpop band. Then, as it so happened, they were the openers for LCD Soundsystem at their Hollywood Bowl shows, another group that I’ve grown to love because of this list and whose tickets I had been toying with buying for months. They were pricey, and I didn’t (and still don’t) really love the venue, but my boss talked me into it - and I’m so glad she did. LCD Soundsystem were great of course, but Pulp but on a damn good show of their own, especially for being an opening act and a group that I had no familiarity with prior (I think they may have technically been a co-headliner, but they went on first, so I think the point still stands). In particular, their closing with Common People has become one of my favorite concert moments of all-time. For those unfamiliar with the Bowl, it tends to attract an older crowd who like to sit during their shows, but by the end of these guys’ and gal’s set, I swear everyone was up and dancing around - even the senior couple in front of us. For a Thursday show, what a hell of a fun night. Enter Different Class. Common People had been playing on a loop in my head non-stop since the end of the concert, so the first thing I did when I saw this pop up was check if it’s on here - and you bet your ass it is. As is Mis-Shapes, Disco 2000, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E., and Sorted for E’s & Wizz, all songs they also performed live as a part of their set. I truly don’t know if I would have liked this album quite as much had I not heard a good chunk of it then, but it was definitely enjoyable hearing them all again here. All in all, I really like the vibe of this album. It’s incredibly overdramatic and a little horny (as was their live show - my guy Jarvis made huge deal out of catching a grape in his mouth), but more so in an endearingly goofy way than a pretentious one, and I found the experience mostly fun as a whole. However, I do think the schtick starts to wear a touch thin towards the end, and while I wouldn’t refer to any of these songs as bad, they're certainly not all bangers either, with the two closing tracks in particular feeling like weaker offerings. The group certainly seemed to make good picks for their live show, as those tracks still all ended up being my favorites after listening to this (though I’ll also give a shoutout to Underwear). Though, maybe I just need to hear the rest of these live to truly get them as well. So, a 3.5 it is for now, though, that’s the same rating I initially gave Sound of Silver, an album that’s probably now closer to 4.5 for me, so whose to say this won’t go up higher for me in time too? Common People certainly isn’t leaving my shuffle anytime soon. As is tradition, going to end this one with a fun fact I learned from Wikipedia: The cover to this album is an actual wedding photo. The groom apparently had a friend in the music industry who he wanted to do photography for his big day but couldn’t due to obligations with Pulp. However, the band decided they wanted to use a photo of everyday people for their next album cover, so he suggested said buddy’s wedding, and that’s what they ended up going with - though with cardboard cutouts of the members mixed in for good measure.

Great Britpop sounds of the 90s

I think I would be a little more inspired by a band that claims on their Wikipedia page to be figureheads of the Britpop movement, if I was a little more inspired by the Britpop movement. I didn't find anything specifically wrong with this album , it just didn't grip me as much as I would expect for an album cited as being as influential.

It’s been a while since a single has genuinely jumpscared me

I was honestly pretty surprised to look at the information on this album and find that it was released in 1995; from the music to the somewhat zany lyrics, it definitely has a straight up 80s new wave vibe. So while this is definitely yet ANOTHER Britpop album, it's at least a bit different than a lot of the Britpop that has come across this project. All in all, this was pretty enjoyable; it definitely stands out from the crowd of Britpop on this project.

Why do I get all of the albums in the list with whiney, angsty white dudes first? Jeebus Cries man..

Pretty cool album. Some great stuff coming out of the UK while the US was mostly grunge.

This is better than I thought but another album where once you've heard the big singles you might as well not bother

Felt like it had early prom night vibes on some songs

lots of chord strumming

Very disappointed with the general quality of the songs on this album. True the extended version of Common People is excellent and Disco 2000 very good. As for the rest, it seems like fillers to me. Not unpleasant but not memorable either.

Pulp got their big breakthrough at a time when I was peak clubbing age, and a solid Brit Pop Indie-Kid … but I did not get into them. Obviously Common People and Disco 2000 were always played at student nights, but they always left me cold, and the first half of this album didn’t change my opinion. The back half, though - not brilliant by any stretch, but really pretty good. Sorted For E’s and Wizz and Underwear are great tunes, and while they don’t tip it into 4 stars, it is a very high 3.

some song are really odd, others are good. Overall it's a good album

While I found some of this enjoyable the album devolved into some performance-art-level weirdness that I couldn’t embrace.

Nice lyrics and I like Common people. Then a bit boring musically

Bank in the day, I was never a Pulp fan. I thought that Jarvis Cocker was a very funny and interesting guy, but I could never gel with their music. It felt too posh and full of itself. Having given this album another chance, I feel I get it a bit more now. Some very witty lyrics and a great run of songs from the start. I did find my attention waning towards the end of the album, and some of the "breathier" Jarvis vocals were starting to get a bit on my nerves. But, I have to say overall that I was pleasantly surprised by this album.

Famous songs were from os

Pulp is fine I guess. I know Common People but mostly because of the Shatner version.

pretty solid -3.5

when i listened to this album for the first time a few years ago, i went into knowing how beloved it was, which in turn made me feel like i should love it too. and i thought i did. relistening today, i’ve come to realization that i feel pretty neutral about it. i love Common People and Disco 2000, but none of the other songs really hit me the same… maybe i need more time with it. most britpop albums i love needed multiple listens for me to get there.

Pretty good listen for something I thought was generic Brit-Pop. The Hits for me as Gems but the first track - Mis-Shapes was good too.

I liked it

(3.5) common people and disco 2000 are so good (popular i know but so good) they all sound a bit samey after a while though

Different Class – Pulp – 3/5 Good vibes and catchy Britpop energy. I think it’s my first time hearing Pulp, and it was an enjoyable listen overall.

if you like britpop, which i do not... tbh of all those bands it's one of the better (with oasis as worst of all) Not heard a super-mediocre album yet (day 5 i think)

There's some good and some bad here. Think the most popular songs are really fun and ear wormy but others are not particularly notable to me. It certainly has the Brit-Pop sound and delivers it consistently. It might have stood out more in the moment but I struggle to separate it from the genre now. There's a lot of sound that flows down into The Killers which is cool to see.

Sounds like a lot of other stuff it’s good but not new

It's as if David Bowie ans Pet Shop Boys had a love child.

It’s okay. Again, probably need more time with it. Sort of feel like I’ve heard that sound before…

Highlight Song/s: Disco 2000 This is an alright album. I find the verses and intros on this quite good, however the choruses tend to kill the momentum that the verses and intros worked hard to do. And then the choruses start to make the song drag by going on for longer than it should. "Disco 2000" is a STRONG exception to what I just said I had previously listened to this album, and the result was that I didn't like it. So when I got this album today from the generator, I thought it might convert my current opinion. But no, still think it's a miss from me.

Nice music, swingy, but a bit too old for my taste 3/5

It’s very listenable for me. The vocals are tolerable. The synths and guitar tones are up my alley. I like how there is a drastic switch up from the first song on the album to the second because when listening to an album, each song having its own identity is very important. The album had me at mis-shapes, lost me at I spy, had me again at Disco 2000 (my favourite song on the album), and then had good ending with Bar Italia. Over all, very listenable for a gen Z such as myself.

Couldn’t tell you why I don’t like this but I just don’t. Tried for years. It’s not you, it’s me. 3/ 5

Pretty good

This was good. Not great, but good. Brit pop/rock can be sort of hit or miss from me so I don’t know that I’ll go back to it ever, but it was fine while I was listening to it.

Having only ever heard Common People before as one of the all-time Britpop anthems (and a great song) this one was sort of interesting to dive into. I do like the overwhelming wry British-ness of it all and the sort of smothering sense of dead-end working class lives that he represents, it's certainly not very uplifting but really invokes a sense of place. Some cool musical moments, like I Spy with its lush orchestration and feeling like a Bond credits song but being about class warfare. Some fun melodies and whoa-oh-oh parts. Did I love it? No, but definitely don't hate it either.

The hits are very good but lacking in some of the other songs

Helt ok men inget jag kommer sätta på

mid except common people and disco 2000

I'd gladly forgotten about Disco 2000. Dangerously close to Bowie for me.

Unmistakeable 80s aesthetic that I sort of have a natural aversion to but which is growing on me lately. The lyrics are very explicitly and plainly stated, which is simultaneously charming and sort of ugly. I’m not sure, I’d give it a 3 solidly. I think underwear and the penultimate track are the highlights.

It was fine. Sure.

A local station here in town started playing some Pulp songs recently for some reason. So I had heard a little before listening to this album after never having heard them before. They sound like another more recent band but I can't put my finger on it...

Better than I remember it being but still not overly bowled over by it. I did quite like His n Hers but there was always something about this one I didn’t really care for. Unfortunately time hasn’t really improved things. It’s alright but not brilliant and I don’t suppose I’ll be revisiting it anytime soon.

Didn't give it a full listen, seemed alright though. Got a little into the spoken-word style of singing which requires a certain mood.

Not for me, some good tunes

Some killer. Some filler. Great writing but not really my thing. I appreciate it but I don’t love it.

Brit-rock is a genre that I'm not very familiar with since it wasn't something that I was interested in in the 90s when it was big so this album and band is completely new to me even though they seem very popular. The "hit" songs on this album are very good but most of the songs are very forgettable to me. They kind of meld together. I had a good time listening to the whole thing and will probably do so again. I might just have to skip a few songs.

So much better than their album “This is Hardcore”!!

Decent album.

A couple songs were bangers. Most of it wasn't really my jam.

Lol. This was a fun, quirky ride.

Great 90s Brit Rock

It's fine, common people, and i spy were the most interesting to me, good sound, though, just not for me 30 years later.

Had its good few upon songs but some felt very 80s and it didn’t match to me - had its moments of good stuff tho

Two really good songs and a lot of filler.

Was okay, couple songs I liked but not super remarkable imo. Best song: Common People Notable(s): Pencil Skirt

Feeling Called Love is a top standout, but this album feels like a 90s version of Andrew Tate rhetoric at times.

Common people was good solid album

The lyrics were crazy

An interesting album lost in a sea of 90s brit pop. After one listen, I am having a hard time distinguishing this from other contemporaries, but maybe I'll get more out of it on later listens. The most interesting thing about this album is the occasional touch of dissonant strings or funky synth.

This album is interesting and at times enjoyable. I appreciate the cheap and raw sound but it's not my favorite thing ever. The singer has some good moments but I think he suffers from trying to be sexy and mysterious. Some of the lyrics are also downright creepy and unsettling. I really like the first track mis-shapes, and a few others are good. Everything else is forgettable.

Very Good. Not my usual listening, but do hear the evolutionary trail leading back to The Kinks.

This is actually a great album, but I can only listen to a horny British man sing for so long. *heard before

I had high hopes going into this as a lot of people I know have told me Pulp are the best brit-pop band by a mile. Those people are wrong. A lot of this album comes across quite frankly like a horny british teenager wrote it. However unlike Panic! at the Disco's Fever You Can't Sweat Out, its clumsy attempt at suggestive lyrics come across bordline incel and cringey. I don't think you can even call the lyrics suggestive, its straight up the audio equivalent of sending unsolicited dick pics. Not to mention the instrumentals and songwriting often fall slightly flat (again unlike Fever, that albums instrumentals are impeccable). However, when this album is on, it is fucking on. Mis-Shapes is an absolutely fantastic opener and excellently crafted song. Common People might be the best Brit-Pop song, if not its certainly in the top 3, it perfectly encapsulates what the rest of the album feels like its trying to. Disco 2000 again coming in with a great sing-a-long chorus, its a real shame the rest of the album couldn't be consistent with these songs. Im gonna give it a 3 almost purely based on how good those 3 songs were, the bad songs were genuinely bad but I can't deny its influence on music to come. When it works it works incredibly well. I would still say Blur, Suede and (yuck) Oasis are better than Pulp tho. Favourites - Mis-Shapes, Common People, Disco 2000, Something Changed, Bar Italia Least Favourites - I Spy, Live Bed Show, Underwear

Good. 3.5

Very interesting album, there were some tracks I enjoyed, but a few I also felt were a little tough to listen to. Not really my style but I found myself going back for a couple re-listens.

Niceish, heard of Pulp before but never listened, didn't know what to expect but sure, it's okay. "Common people" kinda grew on me now

British rock seems to have a vibe

Never been a huge fan. Just watching the video of the opening track and seems to capture the kind of over dramatic narrative with quite mediocre songs as a backdrop. “I really love it when you tell me to stop, it’s turning me on” hmmm Just all feels a bit theatrical and dramatic and just a bit non-plussed about it. Obviously can’t beat classics like ‘Common People’ and ‘Disco 2000’ but otherwise not too impressed. Hadn’t heard ‘Live Bed Show’ before and enjoyed that. Do enjoy the focus on class and social commentary.

I listened to this when I woke up this morning and when I went to write the review tonight I really had no recollection of any particular song or feeling about the album. I couldn't remember the name of the band or the album. I just listened to the first song again to refresh my memory and, nope, nothing. I guess this is pretty well regarded as classic brit-pop but I don't hear it, it seems pretty unremarkable to me. I don't hate it, but I am more inclined to just forget it again.

It has the one great song and the rest were ok.

"We have David Bowie at Home" (Though more so early on) Maybe four stars - will need to revisit.

Nice album, some solid pop that I am surprised wasn’t bigger in the US. Not groundbreaking but very competent. Common people is great

Miss Shapen was my favorite

Really fine album, common people is great, the rest a bit under

I enjoyed the album, but I feel like each song went on just a little too long.

Kinda overrated

it was okay, i liked a couple of songs, but it didn’t do much for me

Good enough for a 3, nowhere close to being a 4. Common People makes the playlist - Funky start, not much intro. I think my preference is a slow, spacious crescendo-ing intro - First 30 seconds - this sounds like more bland rock that makes no sense why it's on the list - "Common People": Okay, I see why this is on the list. It's a limitation of the album framework of this list though, if an album like this makes the list because of a few huge hits - Brit pop rock is so dumb. If you can make a hit like this, why waste my time with all the 'artsy' (annoying) other songs on the album? Just make 5 great songs and call it a day

***An ok album

I've often wondered if I missed the boat on this band. Maybe not!

Impressive album, all I knew was Common People, which is a banger. Yet I reserve 4 stars and above for an album that I would willingly put on its entirety in the future, and I'm struggling to think of a future scenario in which I would put on an hour of (what I think is?) snarky British pop taking very deep jabs at people I know nothing about.

didn't love

its ok. I recognised common people and disco 2000.

Not hated, but definitely dated

Heard of this band but never really listened to much of their material. Couple tracks in, not really my style but I respect it.

Reminds me of Suede. Started off better than the previous album, for sure. Very 90s Britpop

Lightweight, popish, not all that catchy. But nice smooth vocals and the angst and happy are well balanced. Not my thing but enjoyable.

I’m about reaching my limit on 90s Brit pop. It was fine.

never listened to it, when it came out. Been interested in way heavier stuff at that time. Listening to it now is quite etertaining. Album has ab good songwriting and i think it still works, 30 years later.

Decent, couple of songs I recognised in here

I actually liked the feel of this album, it seemed to be arcade fire before arcade fire existed. What I didn’t like was the lyrical content. We got off on the wrong foot with “pencil skirt”; “I'll be around when he's not in town. Oh, yeah, I'll show you how you're doing it wrong. Oh, I really love it when you tell me to stop, oh-oh. Oh, it's turning me on” (yuck) and it didn’t get better from there. Does this guy sing about anything other than sex?

Wasn’t my favorite but wasn’t bad, no song specifically really stuck out to me a whole lot

interesting stories and backing track, cringy voice

Supercool Britpop record

Common People is a great song. The rest is just okay.

Positiivinen yllätys, ylitti kyllä odotukset. Kappaleet on hyvin kirjoitettu ja mielenkiintoisia, samaan aikaan miellyttäviä. New wave fiiliksiä tulee vähän, mutta enemmän poprock. Parhaat: Disco 2000, Common People

walked so Panic! could run, which is a cardinal sin. 6/10

Better than expected but nothing to remember. Would listen to again.

Okay UK Pop

Mis-shapes was a pretty decent intro Pencil skirt a lil creepy Common people is 1 of 2 songs I already knew before listening, fairly standard britpop song quite enjoyable. Don’t peticularly like the voice of the lead singer but pretty good lyrics. I spy bro is yapping so hard sounding like a dodgy guy with that weird whispering voice Disco 2000 best song, consistently a good album from that point onwards, was starting to feel dissapointed but the B side saved this album Still not my favourite but would give it a solid 5.5/10

in a collection of emo CDs this britpop coexisted in my disc organizer as a teen it now lives permanently on the floor holding up my broken table thank you #Spotify #ad

pretty indifferent to this one. Some of the songs were nice or interesting, but I feel like most of it just passed over me.

6/10 Blah. I did like the cover they did of William Shatner though. inventive if not as good. 5-29-2025

Bit weird, I REALLY enjoyed the music, not so much the questionable lyrics at times and would've been a much higher vote for me if they weren't creepy. Highlights: Sorted for E’s and Wizz

"And you dance and drink and screw because there's nothing else to do." This is my new philosophy of life. Not much different from the old one 🥴. I liked this. 3

-it was good, sounded a bit like abba sometimes lol -don't know if I would go back and relisten, but wouldn't skip if it came up

Not bad. Bit of blue knock-off but enjoyable

It clicked a bit more on second listen but the tracks are very hit and miss.

Fun and energetic Britpop. Some of the melodies may feel a bit stale 25+ years on, but the sheer energy and fun vibe the band puts out more than make up for it. "Common People" is one hell of an anthem - I didn't realize it was their song.

A bit to horny Rape fantasy is a bit concerning The sound is good Comedy album? Not my favorite album the sound was not cohesive.

Common People is one of the best songs of the 1990s hands down. 5/5 as a song. Unfortunately the rest of this album is pretty mediocre. A few songs that flirt with four stars, a few songs that flirt with two stars. Overall, this has to be 3/5 as an album.

At first, I thought maybe too British. By the end I realized too British. I don’t like how he sings or what he says. Enough about breasts. Music is good - lyrics and vocals aside. But this one not my cup of tea.

Fun to listen to.

Seems pretty Bowie inspired even if it didn’t take me there

it’s better than i anticipated. i liked common people, disco 2000 and bar italia. still not my cup of tea.

That's not my taste in music - But ok

'But I've kissed your mother twice / And now I'm working on your dad.' It's wry British humor, that's true, but it's also para 'the common people,’ or so it is supposedly. That is, when Jarvis Cocker isn't intent on outsmarting his audience, which he too often is, there's something resembling a meat-and-potatoes sensibility: 'It's more a case of haves against haven'ts.' The big hits - 'Common People' and 'Disco 2000' - are absolute classics, and 'Live Bed Show,' 'Something Changed,' and 'Underwear' are worthy second-tier slappers, but tracks like 'I Spy' and 'F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.' betray the record's prevailing flaws: too cold, too aimlessly theatric, above all, too fatally competent. I follow it but I'm not so sure I feel it. You feel me?

Musically, definitely some interesting sound that I enjoy coming back to, although I maybe don't need a full album. My real problem is the lyrics and themes are trying to be edgy but come off more creepy.

Common People is a good song. It's not a bad album, just doesn't land with me.

Never was a fan of the breathy singing and sultry incantations. Love the singles though.

Not terrible. Didn't really capture my interest, though. Forgettable.

Snide Tom Jones having fun

Meh, this didn't do it for me. As I develop my scale, I find this to be middle of the road.

man clearly has some _real opinions_ when it comes to women and that keeps getting in front of what is some pretty nicely composed songs if they were about anything else.

Had some absolute bangers that I will definitely come back to. That said, the creep vibe took it down a peg for me on a couple of songs. Some filler in the middle. The back third of the album was really good and surprising. Cool sound and glad I listened to it.

This record’s lyrics probably don’t hold up under the modern analysis, and even if they do they are kinda like annoying edgy guy horny in a weird 90s way, but also the record is full of songs that don’t have that problem and are jams and even the ones that ar lyrically gross have lovely music. If you loved this band in the 90s I bet you have really strong and good feelings about the record and that’s nice, but it’s hard to listen to THAT many lyrics that sound creepy and not feel creeped.

Rock, 1995 -> 3

I really liked this record except where it falls apart at the end.’m honestly yoo stoned to wtirr Yee w a review but I dig savage English music with bite.

Feeling a bit excluded.. they are having a party but I am not invited 😢. also it sounds like more like narration than singing. I could tell this was on purpose but not really my type of music. Not a huge fan of head voice either. Music wise it’s not bad. still a good listen

Meh... It's not bad, but did I really need to listen to before I die?

Solid, but not quite my style

Oh, I know Common People! And Disco 2000!

I liked common people and disco 2000 but the rest is meh. Why does his voice do that

Some classics, some new favourites, some forgettable tracks. Will come back to it in the year 2000.

Not a 90's Brit-pop fan... while these songs aren't terrible none of them stand out or make an impact other than 'Common People', which just barely elevates this one to a 3.

lots of these songs sound vaguely familiar to me for some reason. not my favorite, but i do like disco 2000.

I really liked the music and instrumentals. But I wasn’t really blown away by anything. I also wasn’t really into the singers voice and I didn’t connect with the lyrics. This is a hard album to review cause I don’t have very strong opinions on it one way or another. It’s not great but it’s also not terrible. I find albums like this very difficult to review when I either haven’t added any songs off this album, but also didn’t hate it. I feel like 1s and 2s are for albums I either don’t like or I can find objective faults with it. This album doesn’t fall into those categories. But this album is super forgettable.

It was good
