Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Starts off great, but fizzles out midway through the album. "Common People" is probably the best song of the Britpop era though. 4 Stars.

Solid album. Definitely one of the more essential Britpop releases and Jarvis and band feel at the top of their game here. Common People still an all-timer, frankly different class but Mis-shapes, Disco 2000 and Something’s Changed are quite excellent as well. There are couple of lowlights - the spacey, spoken word verses on FEELINGCALLEDLOVE are a bit of a drag and I Spy goes for a Leonard Cohen Takes Manhattan/Gloria Gaynor I Will Survive combo which doesn’t 100% work for me.

Classic britpop, 4 stars for common people alone

I really didn't like the last Pulp album on this list. Here's to hoping... Mis-Shapes is an okay opener -- getting some James Bond vibes towards its conclusion. Common People is an early standout. Nothing really special, just a really well done driven indie pop jam. Disco 2000 is also a really nice and bright indie pop song with appeals to some 80s shoegazey / post-punk tones. Sorted For E's & Wizz reminds me a bit of Flaming Lips in the best of ways. F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. (while terrible to type out) is another great one in here. More moody and contemplative than the rest that is verging on spoken word. Monday Morning is among my favorites on here. Kind of dub/surf-rock infused jam that makes liberal use of echo and reverb to give a spacious feel to the song. Okay, this is leagues better (IMO) than This Is Hardcore. The music is more interesting and varied and plays better to the vocalist's strengths -- ultimately it doesn't come across nearly so pretentious. Expected nothing, came away happy. Solid 4 / 5.

I like every part of this album except for when he is weirdly whispering and groaning in my ear. Some of the lyrics were also very strange and erotic which I was not a fan of. Perfect example of this was Common People where it started off and I hated it but ended up being an absolute jam when he actually started singing. The actual songs and instrumentals are pretty fantastic. I really like the transitions between low and high energy in each song. This band sounds like if you put the singer of Depeche Mode into the band of Arcade Fire.

Pretty good, especially for British music on the list, but a few songs just made me kind of uncomfortable (the song Underwear comes to mind). That being said, I still like it, and Common People is really good.

Different Class by Pulp is the 5th album I have heard from this website, and it is also the only album I had not heard of prior. Because of this, I wasn’t as eager to listen to it as I had been for the other albums. Luckily, the album ended up being one of the best that I have been made to listen to so far. I have never been a big fan of Britpop, but after hearing this album I may reconsider my stance on the genre.

Good at the first listening

Sharp, bittersweet songs about growing up different, finding your tribe on the journey through life, with echoes of the Kinks - a modern take on the swinging 60s. Sly lyrics packed with puns and insight, powerful arrangements with plenty of hooks

Solid Britpop record

I generally can't stand the 80s sound. There are albums from the 80s that I enjoy thoroughly, but other than this one, I can't name one that I've enjoyed that also sounds like it's from the 80s. Maybe because the Gen X ennui doesn't sound so self-serious here.

Surprised I didn’t know this band! Solid 4

This album was really good songs, and also some overly dramatified bads ones. However, when it was all over, there was more good than bad. This stuck with me: "She doesn't have to go to work But she doesn't want to stay in bed 'Cause it's changed from something comfortable To something else instead." Clever songwriting.

this is a good one ☝️

Best Britpop album of all time...

I dunno about pulp. Jarvis Cocker goes on about being working class and all that, but i'm not sure he really is. Maybe he was monetarily challenged at certain points in his life but spiritually... I mean he's called Jarvis FFS With all that being said, solid album musically.

Genuinely interesting and unexpected use of 90s sounds to make a wide variety of moods.

Everyone keeps telling me about how great Pulp is and all I've been familiar with is their legacy. Now that they are back touring for a few shows the talk is at a fever pitch. So this is the second time I've given this album a spin in a months and it's slowly growing on me. The Bowie influence is great and not too heavy handed or anything, the songwriting is fun, layered, and a bit cheeky, and best of all it's a good time. I can't be mad at these guys and looking forward to hearing more! Will be listening again, it is always strange when an artist like this has escaped me for so long when they've made such an impact for so many people.

Fond memories of this from the mid 90s. It was nice to have a relisten, but I'm a bit offended on behalf of my poor, innocent teenage ears. Jarvis was one horny bugger!

common people has always been a favorite - it's one of those songs that feels like it must be a cover, in that it feels like it's just always been around. but it hasn't, and it's not even from the 80s, though it definitely has that new wave/post punk sneer feel to it. i also love the way they channel bowie on live bed show.

This sounds a bit like a rock opera I do like the focus on class and that struggle for status and looking for something to make the struggle worthwhile. Will listen again

Wow I really liked this!

Never heard the band or these songs. This is why I enjoy this list. This was an immediate like for me, can't get enough of the 80's style music and hooks. "Skin stretched tight over high cheekbones And thousands of tiny dryness lines beating a path"

Pulp is a weird one I think. There are a few songs I absolutely love e.g. underwater. But then there are loads that I just find so cringe! But maybe it is meant to be a bit cringe, they lean into humour a lot. I'm drawn to the storytelling too, I like that. But yeah some times I think it's a bit beige. What are you about Pulp?! Maybe that's a compliment that I cannot easily box them up. There hits tip this into a 4 for me

Theatrical album, dramatic. Interesting and varied songs about class struggles, lust, finding meaning in the mundane, and lost opportunities. Great listen. Black Country, New Road meets David Bowie. Stays lighter and more tongue in cheek. Standouts: Common People, Disco 2000, Something Changed, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E., Underwear, and Monday Morning.

Songs to listen to after your besties funeral? 😭😭 idk man that's just the vibe I'm gettin

3.7 - Enjoyed this, but their big hitters outweigh the whole album. Kind of a much better version of madness. No idea why but they are in the same category in my head

Better than I expected. Consistent, mostly still about the hits, but there were more than I remembered - Sorted for Es & Wizz, brilliant song name. Fave Tracks: Common People, Sorted for Es & Wizz, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E 4.2/5

Britain pop is fun, is witty, it's classic :)

A good album, but could have been tighter and lost a couple of tracks. One of the better Britpop bands

I liked a lot of the pop-y post punk stuff (similar to Bowie and the Smiths) but it occasionally dabbles in sad vampire music, which….wasn’t as nice.

Para los que nos declaramos no conocedores profundos del britpop es muy bueno este disco porque permite encontrar trazos que escuchamos en artistas y discos posteriores. Muy bueno

6/28/24. Britpop is a secret favorite genre of mine, although I've done myself a disservice for not listening to more Pulp. This album epitomizes the sound and allows itself to explore numerous sonudscapes and subjects. Great album!

oh fuck yea yea it's a w album what can i say

The mysterious, dark lyrics are noticeable immediately. I had to listen several times for the music to open up a bit, though. Really interesting. Sometimes I feel that the sound itself isn’t particularly memorable. It’s like the anti-Oasis: whereas Oasis is light, positive, catchy, meaningless, this is darker, paranoid, and you have to dive through it.

Kort en krachtige review. Krachtig album uit een tijd waarin veel fenomenale albums geboren zijn. Echte britpopklassieker en ook genoten van de minder bekende hits. Toch zijn Common People en Disco 2000 wel de echte bangers. 8/10 Highlights Common People Disco2000

Disco 2000 is a banger

some pretty great songs. the singer reminds me a lot of bcnr a lot

Always loved Common People when it came on, surprised in hindsight I never checked these guys out more closely...90s Britpop really was a thing!

I'm not sure I've ever really heard Pulp before, and wasn't quite sure what to make of the opening song (and its video that has an incredible roadkill-fascinating quality), but the album definitely grew on me as listened more. I'm not sure I really know what Britpop sounds like, but I'm glad this doesn't really remind me of Oasis or Blur all that much. This may have been a one-off-greatness by them, but I'm glad to have heard the album, and watched those fascinating videos (mainly "Mis-Shapes" and "Common People"). I also appreciated reading the Wikipedia entry, largely to find out the backstory for the album title and also the album cover (or at least the wedding photo cover, as I guess early issues had multiple CD covers to choose from). I also feel like this is what The Divine Comedy was shooting for with their album "Casanova".

Britpop is the most 6/10 genre in existence. This is the exception.

enjoyed throughout

Finally! A Brit pop album I liked.

Some solid Britpop.

this is a 3.5 rounded up

Very Bowie like

I had fun listening to this album. In the end it will not one of my favorites. 4/5

Misshapes good Pencil skirt alright Common people really good I spy great Disco 2000 a little long Live bed show really good Something changed really good Sorted for e’s and wiz forgettable

Good stuff

Such a fun listen. Slice of life lyrics, fun instrumentation, interesting songwriting choices. Going to be added into regular rotation for sure

Pretty good, though at times too British and too horny. Overall solid Britpop album.

Very Good. Reminded of Bowie. Maybe Brit pop ain’t so bad after all eh

Most songs can be listened to, with a couple solid tracks, the most noteworthy being 'Disco 2000'. As a whole, the album is pretty solid and enjoyable to listen to, and it would work great for a soundtrack. Although an individual song on its own doesn't sound that great, they create a neat melodramatic vibe when played one after the other. Not great, but still good.

Not bad at all - I find that they're charismatic enough for me to tolerate the more artsy bits that I'd normally find irritating

Favourite tracks: mishaps; common people; disco 2000

Thoroughly enjoyable listening experience, but then again, I found this album about 2 years ago and started listening to it with some regularity. Will give it 4 stars... but Common People is being added to my favorite play-list on Spotify!!!

Really like some songs from the album but have never listened to its entirety, it’s really solid but not my personal favourite

Fantastic album capturing the feel & sound of working class mid 90s Britain, Common People & Disco 2000 are real classics although tbh the record doesn't really have any terrible tracks on it. Highly recommended

Went into this one with low expectations. Really enjoyed it though! Some banging tunes on there 4 ⭐️

That's a proper album. Good addidtion to the list. Kinda odd, but good vibes. You could even say it's... different class.

Fun album. I love the lazy vocal of Jarvis Cocker and the lyrics and music. Is great!

already know this one. intimately. as in i have the dvd! favorites: mis-shapes, f.e.e.l.i.n.g.c.a.l.l.e.d.l.o.v.e. (i like it because it reminds me of like a friend), bar italia and also common people coz ofc.. i didn't love underwear or pencil skirt(although that line about i kissed your mother twice and working on your dad is kind of funny).. not perfect but pretty good!

Very nice album, thought they sounded great, production was really good. Loved the stories the songs told, tracks 1, 3, and 5 were my personal favorites. Didn't love how preoccupied they seemed to be with sex although they were telling stories about people and society so I suppose that makes sense. Very solid album.

Good album.

Jarvis Cocker is the most charismatic frontman in rock since Bowie. He possesses everything an American could love about an Englishman: snark, wit, upper-class sensibility, sex, and of course the accent. The music tends towards grandiosity and theatrics, often hinging on some of the best executed bridge-to-chorus transitions in pop. The lyrics tend towards commentary on the British, society, the turn of the century, sex, and just about anything else Jarvis felt like. Who else gets away with his many "la la la"s? You've never heard scathing critique until you hear how Jarvis characterizes his countrymen in Mis-Shapes. Listen to the elation at the climax of Common People (it's tragic the radio version for this even exists), building off those little guitar and piano parts. Notice at the end of I Spy how in control of your emotions Jarvis was the entire time. Disco 2000 is an 80s pop-punk song published in the 90s. Jarvis writes more character development over the course of Something Changed than you'll see in most novels, showing the power of love on causality. You could find Sorted For E's & Whizz on a George Harrison or Bowie best-of, with an honest look at the qualities of drug-induced euphoria. In FEELINGCALLEDLOVE Jarvis sheds the Hallmark trappings of Valentines Day love in favor of raw sexual desire, wonderfully executing a soft-loud dynamic with layers of singing, moaning, sultry narration, and crooning to depict the physical love he is imaging alongside dramatic synth-strings and guitars. Underwear does a lot with just it's commentary on one-night stands (intense physical desire to fuck, regret afterwards) but the chorus throws in Jarvis' own voyeuristic desires and the song has a whole new layer that you can even extrapolate to the modern porn industry. The first chorus of Monday Mornings teases you before it finally pays off later in the track, while the lyrics of the song hammer home of banality even party every night can bring.

Great album to be a bit drunk, pop headphones on and have a dance around your room Best Song: Mis-Shapes Worst Song: Pencil Skirt

Guter Britischrock mit zwei Klassesongs

The more upbeat songs have all been played to death on the radio and are pretty boring. But the more mellow and melancholic songs are really good. Especially I Spy. so good.

Not bad!

Good background noise, 4 or 5 stars

It's very very good, more than a 4.5. One of the finest examples of britpop.

Loved it

ooo la la. This music is sexy, catchy, and pulpy. It's got a good beat and I can dance to it. Common People is a great song. One of my fav's. There is a version of William Shatner doing the vocals which is worth checking out.

Me encanta!

Its was good! I really liked it. Pop.

Like Roger Waters or Bowie. Very chill but great melodies and Common People sounds straight out of Bowie's discography. One of the better 90s British Pop/Rock bands I've heard

I enjoy the British rock scene, and I liked this album.

piaciuto molto

Люди пишут, что вокалист поет грязные песни про любовь, но мне то что? Я в текст особо не вслушиваюсь, а музыка замечательная, пусть и немного устаревшая и не особо врезающаяся в голову. Хороший рок.

Had no idea what to expect from this album. I knew of Pulp by name only, not by sound. I knew “Common People” because William Shatner covered it once. But that’s about where it ended. I thought this was great. A few words come to mind - horny, eclectic, dirty, mischievous. It twists and turns into a ton of different directions. At times I thought I heard a Bowie influence in there. It’s 90’s Brit Pop without the whiny voice and more hard rock/60’s and 70’s influence. And it’s fun. I had a great time with this album. Easy 4 stars. Could be five if I listen to it again and really take to it. Standout tracks: Mis-Shapes, Pencil Skirt, Common People, Disco 2000, Underwear, Bar Italia

Love the variety in song style. Fun!

Catchy, melodic, interesting songs. Reminds me of another band, but I'm not sure which one. Happy to listen again.

Fantastic. What Britpop should be.

aight rich people really love feeling poor listening too this fuck me.

Britischer Rock Common People sehr gut Disco 2000 sehr bekannt Leicht progressive Ansätze 4/5 Sterne

had some bangers, wasn’t in the mood during the first few tracks so i relistened after finishing it and it sounded good, common people and disco 2000 are my favourites, glad i listened just for those songs. decent 8

Bänger

Think driving down the countryside in a droptop Volkswagen beetle wearing brown corduroy bellbottoms heading for a weekend beach party with a group of similarly stoned friends, playlist. Lots of focus on the NSFW part of this scenario.

Interesting that a band would bloom this late in their career, but the songs are good and certainly better than what Pulp would produce later. 3.5/5.0: Very Good

Cool album - put it on my playlist. Lesson learned!

Favourite song - Mis shapes

Can’t say I have ever heard of these guys but one of the songs from this album is in my liked songs playlist. This is a really good record. Europop with strong Bowie vibes. Great melodies, fun record. Common People is an awesome song. I like this a lot.

Interesting music, good for the radio. Probably the best britpop/rock I've had on this list so far. Stand-out: I Spy

some Bowie vibes. Feels like a soundtrack - that's exactly how I was feeling in the first song, then that song with the 'dark talking undertones' made me picture it as a vampire movie. Based on the album cover i think vampires are a good description of their appearance and music.

Feels almost like it's from a musical. For being made in 1995, it sounds a lot like a reverb heavy, Gothic, 80s album. I like the vocals, I like the sounds they chose. A little repetitve.

Мне нравится эта группа. моя любимая песня которая называется по-английски Common People. Темпы все одинаковые, а тексты иногда банальны. Однако Мне нравится звук.

Big Psychedelic Furs vibes, I really vibed with this one

Lovely sounds, nice to hear something like Bowie (but never the same)

Two classics brought me in, and opened my ears to this variation of Bowie and Morrissey incorporating more urgent 90s melodies.

Normally I have a visceral gut aversion to anything this glammed out or theatrical but somehow Pulp have never set off my alarm bells. Jarvis Cocker sells all his performances with such commitment, you kinda have to buy into what he's bought into himself. It also helps that "Common People" and "Disco 2000" are such absolute triumphs of songs. The way "Common People" in particular keeps ratcheting up momentum and somehow doesn't wear out that chorus despite repeating it like 8 times is pretty remarkable. This has a bit too much filler and too long a run-time to fully hit its promise, and I'm just too much of a sucker for Oasis to call this peak britpop, but it's a really enjoyable album.

dobro mi je bilo ovo

svida mi se

So British. But I liked it more than I wanted to.

The lead singer reminds me of an ultra horny drama kid. Produces cool and edgy art but you would be scared shitless to be in the same room alone as this guy. I get some Rocky Horror Picture show mixed with the Cure vibes off this album. I really liked the music but it's hard to shake the creep factor at times.

Great! Had original common people

Viele interessante stücke, die bekannt sind. Ich aber schon ewig nicht mehr gehört habe

Jaded lyrics, but fresh sound

me gustó bastante pero bueno igual 7.5/10

Classic icon of the 90s. At four o'clock the normal world seems very, very, very far away

skip the first two, better when rocking out than pretending to be bad leonard cohen or pseudo-Bowie.

Serge Gainsbourg and Bruce Springsteen stumble through a night in the 90s London club scene.

Pulp's "Different Class," released in 1995, is a triumph of Britpop that not only defines the genre but elevates it to new heights. Frontman Jarvis Cocker's sardonic wit and keen observations about class, desire, and societal norms permeate the album, making it a sharp and socially aware commentary. The album opens with the iconic track "Mis-Shapes," a rallying cry against societal expectations, setting the tone for what follows. "Common People," the album's anthem, is a brilliant narrative that captures the tension between different social classes with both sincerity and irony. Cocker's delivery, a blend of detachment and emotion, adds layers of complexity to the storytelling. "Different Class" is an album that perfectly balances pop sensibility with lyrical depth. Tracks like "Disco 2000" and "Sorted for E's & Wizz" showcase Pulp's ability to craft catchy, danceable tunes while maintaining a subversive edge. The album's sonic palette, with its mix of glam, rock, and synth-pop elements, contributes to its timeless appeal. Pulp's exploration of identity and the complexities of human relationships resonates throughout, making "Different Class" a cultural touchstone of the Britpop era. With this album, Pulp not only secured their place in the musical landscape but also created a lasting masterpiece that continues to captivate listeners with its wit, style, and social relevance.

Elvis Costello, David Bowie vibes. This will make my playlist. How did I miss it!

At first I was like breh not another new wave cure type album. But then it gets so melodrama I started to love it. I never knew you’d get marrieddddd. Perfect

3.5 - I quite like a few of the tracks on here, and some of the other tracks have moments that I like, but I didn't care about the rest of the album. My partner gave this album a perfect 5, so they're probably not gonna be happy about this. It's a pretty horny album, which tends to miss for me and leave me feeling a tad uncomfortable. He has a nice voice, so he can kind of pull it off, but when it's most of the album, well, I guess I got tired of it over the course of an hour. But it's not bad or anything, I think it's solid, just a case where I'm probably not going to seek out the deep cuts again any time soon.

Good songs

Got it!!

Britpop, good melodies, positive, melancholic, great album

Britpop! Zalige plaat, Arctic Monkeys uit 1995. Leuker dan Oasis. Minstens zo leuk als Blur. Goeie songs. Common People, Disco 2000, andere mooie album-tracks. I like, deze gaan we nog opzetten.

Some songs are true gems, but it doesn't convince me all the way through

I love this, and I think it's aged brilliantly. So much great music in this, as well as diverse and engaging songs.

A perfect statement of its time, and I kinda love it

Wonderful album. Jarvis is one of the best front man. I dont know if it gets five stars but for me its four. Its varied interesting and catchy as hell.

An epiphany. Spent years purposely avoiding the band because I had the wrong idea about them. Wrongly lumped them in with Oasis. Loved it.

Hat Spaß gemacht, erstaunlich da war der ein oder andere komplett vergessene Klassiker drauf

thumbs up

I was looking forward to this album, as I had never heard any album by Pulp. After several listens, I can't say whether I was disappointed or loved the album. I think overall it must have met expectations, as I think it was exactly what I had expected. Pulp has a bit more flash and variety than some of the other Brit-Pop acts and I will be glad to check out future albums by them.

Some utter bops layered between flops. I had a strange time, but LET'S ALL MEET UP IN THE YEAR 2000

I didn't know this band. They are really good!

אלבום ממש טוב מפתיע מזכיר לי את הרוק של שנות התשעים בטרץ, כמו מוניקה או איפה הילד

Enpä ollut tähän aikaisemmin tutustunut! Hyvää ysärisoundia ja erityisen hyvä kuntosalilla

Hieno britpop-klassikko. En aina ihan tajua, mitä lyriikoilla haetaan, mutta onhan esim. Common People nasevuudessaan timangia. Musiikillisesti on paljon kivoja hetkiä. Aineksia voisi olla vitoseen, mutta ehkä jokunen täytebiisi liikaa. 4+/5

Yllättävän ajatonta ja toimivaa, tää oli hyvä löytö itelle listalta! 4/5

"I wanna live like common people I wanna do whatever common people do Wanna sleep with common people I wanna sleep with common people like you." F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. например довольно проникновенно описывает человека, ненарочно влюбившегося, не понимающего зачем это и почему он испытывает эти чувства. В целом прослушано с кайфом, 4/5

Mix between disco and punk. Songs and lyrics put you in the lives of the common people during 90s Britain.

I think their next record was the actual masterpiece. But it’s all already here in this classical of the 90s. Love it. It’s my youth. It’s about revenge. The “have” against the “have nots”. Ray Davies loves it I guess. It sound like Bowie and the Kinks would have made an album without starships and middle-class depression. “Sorted for E’s & Wizz” is my favorite. The rhythm of the words, the exact pronunciation it so on point.

uncommon

Смесь необычного звучания с довольно заезженными рок приемами, в целом отдельные треки звучат довольно хитово, хороший альбом

Holy crap, did not realise that Pulp were the ones to sing Common People (never heard the band name said really but heard the song plenty). Initially, I saw the length of the album and rolled my eyes, however when it began, I thoroughly took back that eye roll as Different Class really brought the goods with this album. A fun boppy Brit Pop/Rock album that has a very 80s feel to it, yet sits firmly released in the 90s. Best: Common People Worst: Pencil Skirt

This is very good

Listened to this while playing Paperback Adventures solo. I won for the first time! Another 4 letter band from the 90s. I had heard their name before, but was not familiar with any of their music. I was totally not expecting a baroque pop-like album. I did recognize Common People, but I honestly have no recollection of where I know it from. I enjoyed this much more than I expected to. I 4, but only because of rounding up.

Very good. Hoping to get more stuff by Pulp.

This is 100% the best 4/5 album on this list. First five songs are so entertaining and just pleasant to listen to it's incredible. Record dips in quality after that, it definitely suffers from it being a bit too long. But overall verdict is set - it's a great album!

I spy Disco 2000

An album I probably should have listened to before now.

Really liked this one a lot and will definitely listen to more of them.

i wasn’t even a thought in the 80s but i feel like this was super 80s. not take on me, cindy lauper, synth 80s though, a “cooler” 80s music. and yet this album came out in 1995 so who really knows. it was good though! not groundbreaking but interesting songs with some cool stories

SÅ fed. Common People er 90ernes bedste sang. Pladen ender lige præcis under 5 stjerner fordi der er lidt for meget filler.

Virkelig beskidt plade faktisk. Ikke helt min stil, men der er en del gode sange og sådan..

Very nice, thanks!

A tad surprised by how much I enjoyed the rest of this album. Obviously the popular tracks like Common People, Disco 2000 are great, but I wasn't anticipating tracks like Mis-Shapes or Bar Italia. Worth listening too again in a few days for more to sink in.

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this album, but as it kept going my enjoyment grew. I'd definitely snag a vinyl of this if I found one.

I just think pulp have a spot that lies within my brain chemistry, not a perfect album imo but still so brilliant. He doesn’t hold back with his vocals.

Higher energy and more my vibe than the other albums. Probably requires a relisten for a better review. Definitely has potential

I had forgotten completely about this album and, unfortunately, this band. This is a great album. I will find time to come back to it.

So good and so fun. Moody and poppy at the same time. A good mix of both. Quintessential British indie post-punk. Common People is obviously the best track, with Pencil Skirt being the one to def skip.

horny bangers

Heard of Pulp, not the album. Defined as Britpop/Rock from 1995. I’ll probably recognise a few songs. Liking it off the bat :) definitely liking further into it - recognise common people. 4/5, added to library.

I knew Pulp from their song, "Like a Friend," (which I love) so I was excited to actually dive into one of their albums with a critical ear. I swear this list particularly loves artists/albums like this, 90s British kinda pop-punk, but I did enjoy this one more then many of the other offerings so far! I love the sound of the lead singer's voice and while there's nothing too ground-breaking or different here from other Britpop, this album is very much my speed and sound. "Common People" is a fantastic song that will enter my permanent rotation, but I also really enjoyed "I Spy," "Disco 2000," and "Underwear". There's some definite David Bowie influence here, which certainly helps my enjoyment. I think this is just a really fun album, that's got an infectious energy about it, with some great pop hits. A happy discovery!

This list is overloaded with Britpop, but if I got to cut 80% of the genre I’d let this album stay. Had a lot of fun listening, the songs never get too bland or samey.

I really enjoyed this! Singles have been played to death, but overall, this is a great album.

I was surprised to see that Pulp formed in 1978, Common People is the song I knew from them, and I normally associate Pulp with the britpop revival of the 90's. I know Blur and Oasis were the biggest names in the 90s britpop, but Pulp seemed to offer something different and a little different. It took me a while to get to use to Pulp's sound but it is obviously an album that grows on you. Jarvis Cocker has a unique persona that seems to drive the band, it's a little weird, it's a little nerdy but it is what makes Pulp. I don't know much of Pulp, to be far, I think Different Class might be the only album I listen to. Standouts: Mis-Shapes, Common People, Disco 2000, Something Changed, Sorted for E's & Wizz

1) Mis-Shapes (#27, 3wks) - 8,5 2) Pencil Skirt - 8,0 3) Common People (#16, 6 wks) - 10,0 4) I Spy - 9,0 5) Disco 2000 (#30, 4wks) - 9,5 6) Live Bed Show - 8,5 7) Something Changed - 8,5 8) Sorted For E's & Wizz - 8,5 9) F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. - 8,0 10) Underwear - 8,5 11) Monday Morning - 8,0 12) Bar Italia - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,58 (86/100)

Great load of songs, I should listen to more Pulp

It’s got one amazing song and another pretty good song but besides that I find this album just pretty good.

Damn. I’m gonna listen to this whole damn thing again right now. I brought it up at a party last night and I was the only one who didn’t already know about it. It’s a classic, I suppose.

god I'm so in on pulp this is so good. maybe the real britpop winners were these silly fellas. best tracks: common people, mis-shapes, bar italia

Surprised I hadn’t heard this one before. “Common People” is a crazy banger. Would reward repeated listening; it’s a pretty dense album. 90s Clash.

Not just for common people, but for all of Generation X.

Jarvis cocker is a saint

Creative songwriting, worth a few more listens

Great sound to be chilling in your house on sunday morning

Deux titres iconiques avec Common People et Disco 2000.. Mile end dans l'édition Deluxe. Le reste est un peu chiant mais quand même

This album (as well as Pulp's next one, This is Hardcore) was on heavy rotation in my grad school days so I was really excited to see it pop up here. I listened as I walked to work, enjoying the memories and familiarity of the music. But. It doesn't hold the same resonance for me as it did back then. For one thing, almost all of the songs on the album are seething with resentment, hatred, and contempt. It's not that I didn't realize that when I listened to the album on repeat, and it's not like I was seething with any of those emotions myself at the time. I guess I could just enjoy the drums, the singing, and the overall sound without really thinking about the meaning. And who doesn't love a good comeuppance? Common People is not only an awesome song but also great fuck off to the concept of poverty tourism. But as I was listening to it today I started thinking about the intended target of this song, who she might be and what she's after - and I started to wonder if she really exists. I mean, she sounds like a strawman. She comes from Greece, she's studying sculpture, she doesn't know what a supermarket is, and she's pretty upfront about wanting to sleep with quote-unquote common people. I don't know how high up on the scale of hoity-toity St. Martin's College is, but it looks like a pretty diverse and arts-career oriented place. What Pulp doesn't mention is that she's had to leave her own country, renowned for classical sculpture, to come study at the heart of an empire that looted her country's moveable artistic heritage for its own benefit. Maybe she's seeking her own revenge? I'm pretty sure they have supermarkets in Greece. (quick update: Wikipedia tells me she does exist, but I'll let my comments stand). I can still get on board with Common People. And it's really funny when William Shatner speaks it. But a couple other songs made me more than a little uncomfortable. Pencil Skirt, for instance, seems teetering on the edge of consent. But assuming that she's lifting her skirt because she really wants to be with Jarvis Cocker, it doesn't sound like he wants to be with her: "I really love it when you tell me to stop"? "I only come here cause I know it makes you sad"? Ugh. I Spy has a similar feel. The object of the song slips - early in the song it's the husband, and Cocker is angrily sleeping with his wife, angrily smoking his cigarettes, and angrily drinking his brandy, hoping he'll come home and catch the violations. For what purpose? To transfer all the anger? But later in the song the object is the wife - "I'll hold your body and make it sing again," which would sound like love or at least admiration if it weren't for earlier lyrics of blatant contempt towards her. Two other songs struck me. Something Changed, which seems mis-placed in the middle of the album, is a charmingly philosophical take on how chance encounters can lead to meaningful connections, with a brief detour into missed connections. It seems out of character for the album but it was a welcome respite from all the anger. And I loved how Live Bed Show told the story of a broken heart from the perspective of a bed that has seen better days. All in all, I do still like the sound of the album and will rate it highly for craft and nostalgia. But it's too steeped in anger and sex as a form of revenge for me to really enjoy it now.

Surprisingly enjoyed this Britpop album. Original enough to stand out from other bands with an anthemic vibe.

Enjoyable early Alt Rock album. It'll make me look deeper into their discography.

Bowie influence heavy. See where gorillaz gets some influence. Vocals are charismatic, happy vibes with overt sexuality throughout and themes of classism. Dig the chords changes and fun melodies. Has some bits of the smith's in the rhythm section. Fun listen good start and end just ok middle of the album. Loved: underwear Good: disco 2000, live bed show, Meh: Something changed, Monday morning, bar italia Bad: Sorted for E's and Whizz, FEELINGCALLEDLOVE,

A time and a place. Really strong record but dated a wee bit

A sound that is right up my alley! Great listen, even if none of the songs were all that memorable. Like listening to a worse Bowie.

This one surprised me. I'm not a big fan of "pop" and that's what I'd classify (imo) 'common people' and 'disco 2000' as. However, I found myself really like several tracks on this album that I hadn't heard before: Mis-Shapes, I Spy and Underwear. If it wasn't for 1001 Albums, I'd never have listened to those tracks.

Pretty good

It might get a fifth start on a second listen, but it was good. Def. Variations on a theme

Great album length once again. Just the right amount of songs. Started a little slow, but finished strong.

I enjoyed this album after I listened a few times - it is not my normal genre.

Pulp is great, upbeat britpop, like it a lot.

Quality Brit pop. There’s a lot of overindulgent, long ballad stuff, but when they put their backs into it, Pulp really pulls out some incredible stuff. Common People is still such a crazy banger, maybe the most anthemic song I’ve ever heard. When they come back in on the ‘you will never understand, how it feels to live your life with no meaning or control’ that shit goes hard. I don’t know if I’ll really keep coming back to every track on the record, but lots of these are lifetime playlist stuff.

This is an album where a few it deserves a four, but could be a 3 depending on the day. Singles are great, but the rest doesn’t do a whole lot for me

Bowie-ish

Great Brit pop. First album to be added to the collection.

I like em Favorite band I hadn't heard of so far Fun 80s kinda sound but weird and

I really love Jarvis Cocker's voice. The whole album feels very modern despite its age - I can definitely feel this influence of this on bands like The 1975 and especially Bleachers. The instrumentation is varied in a really satisfying way, and there are some really epic feeling song structures.

Strong but I am not attached

Really enjoyed this.

Every song is a 7/10... Except Common People. That's an 11.

Otroligt bra och sexigt

Okayish

This one took a bit to grow on me, but once I got into it, I started really enjoying it. Live Bed Show came out of nowhere and hit me like a brick, and others I particularly enjoyed were Common People, Something Changed, Sorted for E’s and Wizz, and Bar Italia. With a little research I also found out that the lead singer Jarvis Cocker (awesome name) played the lead singer of the Weird Sisters, the band that appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie, which is pretty neat.

I already know and like Common People, interesting to hear the rest of the album. I fuck with it tbh, fun songwriting and great sound. Paints a really vivid picture of a moment in life and time. I can see everything happening like a movie when I listen to these songs.

"Common People" has been a favourite of mine for years, but I never listened to the rest of the album, and I liked the overall vibe it had. I'm happy that "Different Class" isn't one of those albums with one or two great songs alongside boring or otherwise unremarkable songs, the rest of the album is genuinely good.

Mis-Shapes 4.5/5 Pencil Skirt 4/5 Common People 4/5 I Spy 4/5 Disco 2000 4.5/5 Live Bed Show 4.5/5 Something Changed 4/5 Sorted For E's & Wizz 4/5 F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E 4/5 Underwear 4/5 Monday Morning 4/5 Bar Italia 4/5

Like the vibe overall. There's some 60s-70s feelings in this music. I liked Disco 2000 a lot. Obvious why it's the most popular song on the album in Spotify. Also a big fan of Sorted for E's & Wizz. Not a giant fan of Underwear - I know it's the 90s, but come on. Monday Morning and Bar Italia were pretty good. Overall, 3.5 to 4/5 for me.

Peak 90s brit pop

Had heard "Common People" before, really enjoyed the rest of the album as well.

Fun and aware.

Kind of a cross between the cure and

Pretty enjoyable not a big fan of the songwritting its sounds a little basic but the instrumental is very good. I wouldnt be surprise to learn that they were a big inspiration to Black Country, New Roads. This album sounds like them but in a more cheerful tone. Solid Project.

Really liked this one, surprised it came out in the mid 90s, sounds more like the 80s. Really reminded me of Aztec Camera. Really cool album

Just an album full of really enjoyable britpop tunes

After the first half of the album, I wasn’t sure if this one was going to be for me. Even though I was a fan of Jarvis Cocker’s voice, the music and melodies weren’t grasping me enough. Hits like Common People and Disco 2000 are obviously great tracks but some of the other cuts on the first half just weren’t doing it for me. Some great tracks on Side B such as the catchy “Sorted for E’s & Wizz” and the build up and eventual climax on “F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.” made the slowish start of the record for me worth it. I still didn’t love this album as much as many britpop and UK indie fans do as many think it’s one of the best ever. Still a very good album that is definitely worth a listen if you haven’t already. RATING: 7.5/10

pretty dope, tasty Brit-pop with snarky lyrics. 4 stars.

Lembra David Bowie. Muito bom!

heard before: oh yeah The only people who like this album more than me are the drunk geezers I used to play this album for in the pub. Jarvis Cocker has one of the silliest names in music, and Pulp is one of the most slept-on band names imho. Musically, there's nothing really revolutionary happening in this album, but you can't deny that it's filled with bangers from top to bottom. I do sometimes get a bit bored after the Common People - Live Bed Show run, but this time around I've decided that it's just because those four songs are so good, I want to go back and listen to them again. All around solid album. fave song: I Spy honorable mention: Disco 2000, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E

I’m enjoying this kind of music more and more lately. Disco 2000, Feeling Called Love, and Underwear were standouts. Torn between 3 and 4 but I’ll round up

A lot of these Mercury Music winners ending up on this list… I feel like for a lot of them, you had to be there. This one seems to have stood the test of time so I'm giving it a real shot. I kind of like the Bowie-esque vocals. Lyrics on Mis-Shapes hitting pretty good. Honestly kind of a 90's Bowie / Costello type of thing. A bit obnoxious but it works. I Spy sounds a little like a Jermaine Clement doing Bowie for a movie soundtrack... Disco 2000 is really catchy... Kind of love Underwear too. Not sure if this is suppose to be funny or not but I’m giving it a 3.5.

Loved it!

lite tråk ibland men några coola låtar

Was a big fan already but nice to find some new tunes I hadn’t heard before.

Some 5* bangers on this but not enough to give it a 5

Some weird psycho sexual stuff going on in the lyrics, but the songs are pretty good

I enjoyed this one!

David bowie ish

Really good 4 first songs, I like the "eat the rich" narrative, esp on "Common People." Like the pro-drug "Sorted for E's and Wizz" The album has some nice closers with "Monday Morning" and "bar Italia" I like how these songs address the monotony of life in the 90's and even now, it goes to show how well this album has aged 4/5

I kinda liked it

oH mY. carefree, songs that make me long for my party friends. TWO HAPPY ALBUMS IN A ROW. WELL DONE 1001! This is class stuff. Classy. classic. and even has sing along and dancable stuff. old favourites - so yeah a sentimental choice. Summary: 1. Belongs on a list of 1001 - no idea... It's interesting. But how unique or influential, I don't know OK. 2. Do I like it? Yes. One if albums to own. 4-5. yes.

This has been a real eye(or ear)-opener. I have never found Jarvis Cocker’s voice at all enjoyable. Not that I’ve ever heard a lot of it. Until this weekend, I really was only familiar with the song Common People. I’d never heard this, or any other Pulp albums. But I noticed one of the you-tube comments attached to Common People claimed it to be the best song ever written about the working class. So I immediately googled the lyrics & I have to say they’re pretty bloody good. Which led me to look up more lyrics from this album. He’s a good writer. I love Sorted For E’s & Wizz. I’ve played the album so many times now that I’m used to his voice. He’s not Caruso, but it reminds me of other ordinary voices that I do like - Syd Barrett for instance. Of all the so-called 90’s Britpop bands, Pulp sound more like a 60’s British Invasion band than any of the others. Did not think this would happen, but I really like this album, almost against my better judgement.

I was not a huge fan of Britpop. It was often Anglocentric to the point of disappearing up its own backside, and not nearly as good as the cocaine led them to believe. There were, to be fair, some really great singles that came out of it, but the albums often left me unimpressed, especially given the hype they received from the UK music press. This album, however, I really enjoyed at the time, and it holds up pretty well. It's clearly an album about Britain, but is far less celebratory than, say, Oasis or Blur. The deftly drawn vignettes of grimy bedsits, bad drugs and worse sex have a universality to them, and are presented with wit, charm and a dramatic flair. That's the word that I feel summarizes this album best; drama. Jarvis Cocker understands the drama in the songs, and sings with a dynamic range that really heightens the drama of his stories (as opposed to many Britpop singers, who sing with a bored and flat affect that gives me the shits). The arrangements aren't anything to too unusual, but they are well matched to the dynamic range of Cocker's vocals. The avoidance of trendy production techniques means that this album still holds up well 25 years later. The singles are cracking (especially Common People), but there are a bunch of songs that really grew on me over a few listens. 3.5 stars, rounding up. Would buy (at a reasonable price)

Very enjoyable. Some tunes were catch, good lyrics. Favorite Tracks: Common People, Disco 2000, Somethings Changed, Mis-Shapes, Sorted for E's & Wizz 4/5

HL: "Common People", "Mis-Shapes", "Disco 2000", "Bar Italia" The jubilant, bittersweet energy from the big single "Common People" is evident throughout the whole album. Somehow doubt that "Funeral" by Arcade Fire would have been made without this album. Maybe a 5 down the road. I haven't had a Britpop album that took me there just yet, now I must decide at some point which album tickled me the most: this, "What's the Story Morning Glory" or Blur's self-titled. July 25, 2023

Enjoyed this, but apart from the hits, some of the songs are a bit same-y and over long. I think I would have had to be in my teens/early 20s to truly appreciate Pulp.

Schysst platta med flera fina spår.

Some interesting things going on here, might have to revisit.

i am so biased towards British indie rock this fucks so hard dislike pencil skirt please stop being gross and horny this sentiment unfortunately carries through to many other tracks i wish i could enjoy this more but horny straight british man ruins it stop being so gross and horny at least be gay i think the album sounded really good but i am docking points for heterosexuality

Common People is great

Great album but could have been edited shorter

I was never into Pulp, obviously heard some of their stuff on the radio etc, but I was very pleasantly surprised! Such a unique sound, and lyrics to match.

the last of the mods

Reading the reviews this album seems solidly split between 5* this was my era my album this was me Brits and utterly befuddled Americans. Well this was era and I fly back to mid 90's from the opening service. Yeh my mates went to St Martin's. Yeh I was sorted out for e's and whizz (standout track) but there's still something about Jarvis that makes me... well, mildly revulsed. More about certain people of the era really. Yeh it's a classic, but it's not my classic.

Enjoyed that! Haven’t heard the hits in a long time.

Very British and very 90s, but I liked it more than I thought I would. The chord progressions & lyrics held my attention. Standout Tracks - Common People - Disco 2000 - Something Changed - Underwear 2/1001

Some songs are absolute bangers, others really don’t do anything to me. I can hear though that this is like a foundation for newer britpunk/britrock. 3.5 of 5

great album, i don't know how i never heard it before!

Great album. Common People has always been a banger and is unsurprisingly the best track on the album, but I was impressed by the stylistic range. Standouts: Pencil Skirt, Common People, Disco 2000, Monday Morning

mediocre, not particularly outstanding nor bad 4/5

bem bowie com um som dos anos 90 mesmo. agora eu percebi que bowie ja soa meio anos 90 em 70. o cara inventou os anos 80 e 90. 4 estrelas por causa do bowie.

Very good

this album is peak. Honestly i love pulp so much. top songs tho are definitely disco 2000. coat hanger fr and also common people. bops bloody bops

It's a really good album with some excellent tracks (Common People, I Spy, Underwear). The production is mostly strong, but errs on the side of too much at times. As much as it is lumped in with the Britpop that was so dominant at the time, this album feels more like T. Rex or 70s era Bowie to me. Close to 5 stars, but there are too many "fillers" in here to detract from the more stellar tracks.

I don’t think I ever knew Pulp, but they sound so familiar and I enjoyed this album thoroughly.

I wish I had more time with this one. I enjoyed everything about it, from the classist affectation and the ponderings on love and relationships to the angular musicality and bouncy melodies. I missed so many of the details, this being the first (and only) listen, but something tells me the deeper I dig the more I'll like it, so this gets the 4 with authority. I know nothing about this band, though "Common People" sounded familiar, so I guess I'd heard that before. Thumbs up.

A Lesson on the Impact of Time and Place on One's Daily Album It's been a week and it's only Tuesday. I was driving home from another day sitting in the hospital all day with my ailing, elderly mother who needs to learn how to walk again. I hit play on Pulp and felt transported back to those halcyon mid 90s days that I didn't realize were a real dream at the time. I love his sultry, English voice. Common People was a funny journey and I let myself fantasize about seeing this band in the mid 90s in Philly with Jen at the Trocadero. Afterwards we would head to Bar Italia. I really loved this album. I know nothing about Pulp except I'm going to explore more.

As a whole has a ton of songs that feels very interesting and keep you listening, not one on here is a miss but overall can loose the vibe overall, Bar Italia is a great and amazing closing track though

Had a little bit of a Bowie vibe I thought. A fun little upbeat listen without anything that really made me excited either. 4.5

Enjoyable, although not quite as enjoyable as 'This Is Hardcore' for me.

Classic Pulp. Gotta love em.

His voice matches the theme of this album

I dig it. Good mix or high and low vibes that jive with my era. Musicality is there as well. Listenable and something I see coming back to.

Very British rock, my favorite song is Disco 2000. rate:3.9

Unexpectedly a good album, this was like my old boss’s favorite band and I didn’t expect them to sound this way. It sounds like it came out in 1995 and I mean that in a positive way.

I like the poppy sounds. This was another album I was able to put on and let it take me through some work. In fact, it had started over and I didn't notice for a few minutes. I find this kind of music to be fine, but not memorable. 20/20 bananas, 3 stars.

Glad to be reminded of this band and this very solid record.

Lots of fun in my headphones! The hard pans were really well done, sparingly but noticeable. Stayed just the right side of 80s goofy to be taken seriously (at least by me). I wish I could conjure up what song "F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E." reminds me of.

bem massa o som, lembra dabid bowie

I liked this album, they really nailed their choruses and it feels like one of those albums I could sing along with. However, they only talked about sex in this album and that was the theme it stuck with. So that's alright, the lyrics made it interesting enough. There were also some weird vocals they did at the beginning of songs that made it a little hard to decide if it was worth adding since the rest/chunks of the songs were good. So for those reasons it knocks it down from a 5 to a 4. I will likely listen to this again.

Classic 90s reminded me of the Cure and David Bowie

Bowie sound

Excellent 90's Pop/Indie Pop Sounds like Blur/The Cure at times but is still its own thing Big 80s/90s vibes Good flow to the album

love the genre. love the vibe. not the best in the game but happy it exists

Favorites: -Mis-Shapes -Disco 2000 -F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E -Underwear -Monday morning

Oh, that's so epic! Like the band more and more!

solid and snarky

Narrative voice so strong. Still parsing the relationship between the lyrics and the music. Message as a collection of songs is united, curious if an order change would be significant (in terms of listening as an album).

Genres: Britpop Formed: 1978 in Sheffield, England. It wasn’t until the release of the 1994 His 'n' Hers album, that they made it big. I wasn’t a Pulp fan back in the day; however, they have grown on me over the years. I enjoy the social commentary present in the song lyrics.

This one was pretty good, only heard 1 or 2 before

I was pleasantly surprised with this one. After being left confused with Pencil Skirt, I didn't expect it to get better, but it did. I pretty much liked each track for different reasons. Also, cool album cover. Fave track(s): I Spy, Disco 2000, Live Bed Show, Bar Italia

Sort of dissonant/dark britpop that I kind of like. A couple of big classics that bump it up to a 4/5.

Classic pop. Funny, sad and uplifting in equal measure. A few of the tracks I didn't know (and let's face it, most of this was played a LOT when it first came out) I wasn't so keen on, but maybe it's the lack of familiarity. I can see what they were trying to do with I-Spy, but it isn't as pithy as, say, Disco 2000. Some amazing slice-of-life observations, and you mostly feel like Jarvis is on your side in all of this. Stands the test of time, even if the nostalgia and yearning brought a little lump to my throat in a couple of places.

This album is full of social commentary with a specific concentration on class differences in the UK. The music itself is dark, brooding, and often symphonic with a strong sense of melody. It was realized during the apex of Britpop and as such shows some of its hallmarks with its distinctly British outlook and sound. However, there is quite a strong new wave/post-punk influence here, and its more experimental moments shift the record into what would we better labeled as art pop. I liked this album a lot and need to give it another listen to gather my full thoughts.

Really good. Fun listen, but probably will never listen to again.

These disaffected youths grew up to be disaffected middle agers.

Good but a bit slow sometimes

I have never heard about the band and the album until now, but I really liked it.

If you know, you know. If you don’t, you’re probably American.

Love Disco 2000 and Common People. Just all timers. This album goes on for way too long though

4 stars for common people, disco 2000 and the one about pants ONLY

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Mis-shapes, Common people, Disco 2000, Live bed show

Classic, literate and quintessentially British. There is a sarcastic cynicism that runs through this album but when you scratch the surface, there's also a lot of heart. Best Tracks: Common People; Disco 2000; Sorted for E's and Wizz

While Albarn and Gallagher were battling it out as pretty boys on the cover of magazines, Jarvis Cocker was out there writing songs for the working class while banging high-class girls. Well done lad. And similar to what those girls told Cocker afterwards, the whole thing was quite enjoyable but a bit too long.

There’s no denying that Pulp was the grown-up in the room regarding 90’s britpop. There are more Oasis and Blur albums that I listen to a couple of times a year, but there’s a certain charm, confidence and (the keyword here) ability to convey social stigma in Cocker that neither Gallagher nor Albarn possess. Different Class is unfortunately too long - I think maybe cutting it a full 10 minutes would have done wonders. But it’s nevertheless one of the quintessential British 90’s records.

Excellent Britpop album, really a high watermark for this genre. Strong pop sensibility, lovely arrangements, and incisive lyrics. Jarvis Cocker's vocals are posh and melodramatic in all the best ways. Fave Songs: Monday Morning, Something Changed, Otte, Mis-Shapes, Live Bed Show, Sorted for E's & Wizz, Common People

A pretty good album. I was more Oasis and Blur than pulp back in the day. Common People and Disco 2000 are rippers and some of the other tracks are quality. A few tracks I would skip. Will definitely give this another run.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. Aside from "Common People," which I knew already, the other songs were very well-crafted. Very catchy. (I do keep coming back to "Common People," only because I knew it from the William Shatner cover (don't laugh, but it's really good.).) The other songs have a sardonic wit about them, which you just don't hear in a lot of pop songs in the 90s, and I kind of appreciated that. So yeah, big thumbs up from me.

I don't know anything about Pulp and I refuse to look at the Wikipedia entry before writing this review. This records sounds like some kind of 90s Brit-Pop band. Not as snotty-forward as Oasis and maybe a little less obvious than Blur, but definitely more mainstream sounding than bands from the shoegaze scene. But this record also feels like it's pointing ahead — showing the way for bands from elsewhere (geographically) and elsewhen (the future). Like reverse resonances or pre-echos of The Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, The National, and that one that neither of us can think of the name of right now but is on the tip of our tongues...you know, they were big in the aughts.

Love this. It's like David Bowie at his best. The only song I was previously familiar with is Common People. I have to admit I'm still partial to William Shatner's and Joe Jackson's version of it, but the original is pretty good too :-) 4 stars.
