Hip Hop begone! 1/5
did not like it as much as i used to
Perhaps I was not in the mood for it ..but for some reason I did not manage to get into this album - it still ok of course but I liked it more in the past.
Pleasantly surprised by this album. Had to get used to the rapping style and sample use at first, but certainly during the second listen I started to really enjoy it. Probably also worth checking out the lyrics more closely.
Just not my genre. Listen to some hip hop classics on the radio. Love kid rock.
Too bad the music isn’t as cool as the image, logo and member names (Ghostface Killah,; Ol’ Dirty Bastard; Inspectah Deck) Was on my way to three stars, then heard the intro to “Method Man” - that third star got smacked on the dresser with a spiked baseball bat.
So many now cliche rap phrases come from this album - influential! Not a fan of all of it, but love the big singles and respect the big work Wu Tang has done. They're for the children!

So many good tracks on this one!
Decades of imitators demonstrate that the Clan's East Coast Shaolin lane is a true niche. Nonetheless, a classic and wildly influential record. The group pulls a neat causal trick by launching a whole parcel of careers with the strange artifact that is 36 Chambers. Messier cuts like C.R.E.A.M. are my favorites, but the more focused tracks are good as well. It's a packed project.

An iconic album for hip hop. It's fresh, grimy, hard hitting, and fun. The production is amazing, I love the jazz and so samples. All the members come through with great verses and the variety of voices this provides keeps every song exciting. A bonafide classic.
Classic old school rhymes, great sampling. Best tracks for me are Shame and CREAM.

Had not listened to Wu-Tang Clan before, really liked it! Could have done without the coughs at the end of Method Man. I now appreciate who Method Man plays in The Wire even more

Generally good, consistent album. But not a patch on NWA's debut.
No idea how such sweary, angry, mysoginistic, self aggrandising can feel so mellow and welcoming. Well done.

Of all of the classic rap albums I've heard on this list, this has been one of the better ones. It was also much less aggressive than what I associate with. Fav: can it be all so simple
I swear, a lot but I'm not a fan of it in my music. And this did my head in after only 3 minutes into the album. It's excessive.
I hated this stuff in the mid-90s. Now it gives me a bit of a warm nostalgic f***ing glow.

I'm not a rap fan. But this sounds better than most, but won't be adding it to my library. They make the movie sound clips work well. I liked "Can It All Be So Simple"
I always find this a strange listen. It's ok but never fully grabs me but everyone else loves it. 28 years old? I guess I was still going through my grunge phase? Tell you what I did love at this time - The Disposable Heroes of Hypocrisy. 1992's 'Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury' still sounds more vital than this. Shame Franti decided he wanted to be reborn as the new Bob Marley.

My familiarity with the Wu-Tang Clan is limited exclusively to their appearances and association with prestige HBO programming. First they appeared on "The Larry Sanders Show", where a befuddled Hank Kingsley (played to perfection by Jeffrey Tambor) tells the band his favorite song is "Shame On A Nigga". The second moment came on an episode of "The Leftovers" where Nora Durst (in a star-making performance by Carrie Coon) covered up the names of her departed children she had tattooed on her arm with the Wu-Tang Clan logo. Only she referred to them as "the Wu-Tang Band". That episode also made me familiar with the Wu-Tang name generator, which reminds me that I should really start Romanticist Visual as my pen name. If that doesn't scream "Middle Aged White Male", I don't know what does. And this middle aged white male known forever as Romanticist Visual quite enjoyed this album by the Wu-Tang Band. Lower your expectations. It's a fine mess. The Wu got somethin'.

Without a doubt one of the greatest hip-hop records ever made. I've heard this many times and it never gets old. I don't even know what else to say, honestly.
Trots de traditionella stildragen inom hip hop kan jag ej förbi se de planheten. Inom denna genren användas vanligtvis det instrumentala endast som ett verktyg för att rytmisera det verbala. Problematiken i detta är att jag mestadels är en instrumentell lyssnare vilket gör mig till helt fel målgrupp. Därmed har jag lite att säga om albumet förutom att det saknar komplexitet och från min synpunkt lyckas därmed inte albumet. Samtidigt är det nämnvärt att flera hip hop-artister har lyckats med det instrumentala såsom Kendrick Lamar eller Tyler the Creator.

While I can appreciate their influence and legacy on music, this was decidedly NOT for me. Too much swearing and often the sound mixing seemed off, where the vocals and background beat didn't blend into each other

I appreciate the influence this album had on music but do I need to listen to it again? No, I do not. If I want to hear that much swearing I'll go to a Trump rally about vaccine mandates.

This album seemed repetitive and boring. I admit that most hip-hop is just not my thing with only a few exceptions, and this one didn't cut it. I found the skits annoying and for me, where is the actual "music"? Just a boring beat. 2
I was probably never going to love this, it just isn’t my thing, but for what little my opinion’s worth I didn’t this was very good. All very samey and…inexperienced sounding, I guess, not in a good fresh way. Method Man clearly stands out as having the best flow of the bunch.

Not my fav Wu-Tang. I like the audio clips from the music but am not too wild about the dialog that goes in between. The rest is cool. Don't love or hate. Just think they have better albums.

True story: I actually own this album. I found it in a book store for $1. I picked it up because: 1) It was $1. What had I got to lose? 2) Wu-tang is for the children. So yeah, it’s not something I regularly blast through the house, but they definitely made a statement here. Great flow, beats it’s all gear. Quintessential Wu-tang.
9 heads is better than 1. The lyrics on this album are phenomenal, probably because of the different contributors and perspectives and that it's a few guys being "on" for a few songs not all of them. Still, that's 9 talented lyricists. And in my opinion it's really not much more than them rapping about how good they are (or better than others). But it's good bragging and it's not just the same thing recycled on every song. The other motif is telling how they got to where they are, mixing in some shaolin bits to make it half real, half fairytale. Whatever the topic, there's lots of raw energy and great wordplay. And even when they're putting down others it's not the homophobia or misogyny that other albums of the time were pumping out. The interludes to open songs (7th Chamber and Method Man) are still BS but the ones that close songs (Can it Be All So Simple) are worthy listening to. Besides the lyrics, they've got slick, simple beats. Pump it. Shame On A... is a great example of how all of it comes together. Love that track. Ditto on Da Mystery of Chessboxin and Protect Ya Neck.
This is an undisputed classic of hip-hop. I'm amazed when I read about how this album was recorded that it even came together the way that it did. Usually too many cooks spoil the meal but with this it just worked and MAN did it work. I would say that this is one of the most influential albums of the 90s.
Cool grooves, lyrics are pretty rough, but at least they keep the misogyny to a minimum. Enjoyed the unique styles of each rapper. Lots of great (and sometimes obscure) references. Bring da Ruckus and Shame on a N***a are both really cool, but I think if I ever tried to rap along with them where anyone could hear I'd get my ass kicked. Comparing it to contemporaries, I liked the grooves on Dr. Dre's The Chronic a lot more and I felt it had a lot more variety than this album.
Like ‘Enter the dragon’ the old Bruce Lee film. Only not, because it isn’t a film it’s some angry men shouting.

In 300 years, when future civilizations sift through the wreckage of our society, this album will be treated as one of the foundational building blocks of a global culture. People will analyze the lyrics of the GZA like Shakespeare and the production of the RZA like Mozart, they'll probably even think ODB was a genius! The fact that a group of teenagers from the worst areas of New York were able to combine a few snippets from soul records from the 70s, culture and dialog from martial arts movies from Hong Kong and Japan, and a kick and snare to make something that will still be banging in car stereos and block parties 300 years from now is what music is all about. Wu Tang forever!!!
I have heard the band's name for a long, long time yet never heard any of their music. This is a rough album at times, but I don't say that as a criticism; I know that's the intention and it's highly effective. The vocals and music drew me in and they work. From reading about this album, I think most of the instrumental parts are samples? Somehow, it all works. Totally get how influential they were on a lot of acts that followed.

Yeah, this hits pretty hard. Cream is a obvious highlight. Biggest gripe, they seem to do the register before every song, turning a 3 min song into a 6 min song

that was one hell of a way to bust onto the scene. i knew of these guys back in the day, and had heard (and liked) some, but not a ton, of their stuff. it was great to be able to just flow through this one. i really liked this one, despite having basically zero legit connection to hip hop and the surrounding culture.

Hey this wasn't bad. I didn't enjoy the whole album but some of the beats were really good.
I get why this was a huge album. But I just don’t care for it.
Favs: C.R.E.A.M., Protect Ya Neck, Bring Da Ruckus Mehs: The opening to Method Man. Please, please stop with the testicle torture and sewing anuses shut. What even? Don't remember liking Cash Rules Everything Around Me much, but I really liked it this go around. Music on it is great, too.
I enjoyed this album. I am really tired of skits showing up in albums, though.

Sweary with some cracking samples
Pretty good though a bit repetitive. Not my favorite hip hop discovery that honor goes to the Marshall Mathers LP so far. But still some good stuff here. 3.5 🌟
Goes hard
This has some really strong tracks, and I see why it’s such an icon of an album. Still, it had some flaws. I think a lot of the beats were bland , and the conversational interludes realllly slowed down the album. 8/10 overall
4/10. I like that the lyrics are fairly funny from time to time, even forgetting that they just sample a shit ton of kung fu sound effects. Still wouldn't ever want to listen all the way through again, and there were no particular tracks I'd want to come back to either. Certainly wasn't bad, but I didn't care for it much.
Great beats and cold lyrics. You have to be in a certain mood to listen to this and there is a significant amount of filler between tracks but it's still great. 9

This is a classical album that deserves 5 stars for the influence. Any modern hip-hop could not be the same without this album and, also, it sounds so new even today. Classical is classical for one reason!
One of the more important hip hop albums of the 90’s. When one side of America had The Chronic, the other side had the god damn Clan
the skits and stuff really detract from what's already a boring as hell album. Every track was the same as the last, nothing interesting here, no good raps, no good backing tracks. Think I'll stick to good rap.

It's not bad. It's unique, which is cool, but I didn't find anything that really hooked me in the way I was hoping.
Do like me some hip-hop, but many of the tracks here have either aged like milk or were puerile to start with, and it's another culprit for pre and post-fixing tracks with skits which add little or just detract completely. Probably went down better in a cow-hide Chrysler Fifth Avenue, discussing your gang issues, at the time of release.

Ho ascoltato quest'album a più riprese, ho letto qualche testo random e sorprendentemente "Shame on a nigga who try to run game on a nigga who buck wild with the trigger!" non mi si toglie dalla testa! Forse perché durante l'ascolto delle prime tracce sono stato più attento o forse perché effettivamente funziona bene. L'ho aggiunta tra i preferiti su Spotify per le occasioni speciali.. Ma le altre le ho già tutte rimosse. Conclusione: Notorious rimane quello che mi è piaciuto di meno. Voto: 2

This isn’t my favorite genre, but I still liked it for what it was. A good amount of head bopping was had. The old school martial arts references and noises in the songs were my favorite part. Enjoyable album, but most likely won’t listen to again.

Increíble álbum, de los mejores en la historia del rap.
Lo tenía guardado de otra manera en mi cabeza este disco. Es el cuarto que compartía con mi hermano, el televisor de tubo chiquito con la videocasetera abajo, la PS1 prendida jugando thrasher skate and destroy (el jugaba, yo miraba) y olor a huevo, mucho olor a huevo. Me acuerdo cuando se compró Temple of boom de Cypress Hill que el booklet venía con olor a porro. Nada, disco emocional. Repito, hacía muchísimo tiempo que no lo escuchaba y lo tenía más "entretenido". C.R.E.A.M sigue estando bien ubicada en mi cabeza. Transplants tiene una versión muy copada que se llama D.R.E.A.M. En fin. Creo que no lo voy a volver a escuchar para no seguir arruinando el recuerdo.
Hip hop funkie, catchy beats y RZA. ...Onda tenian 9 MC's, como no iba a salir uno de los mejores albumes de rap de la historia. Quiero hacer un review cortito porque el tiempo que paso escribiendo o leyendo esto es tiempo que no lo estoy escuchando. El setlist tiene temas que son clasicos y algunos subpar, pero no hay una cosa que no cierre en todo el disco. Recomiendo arrancar con este si queres escuchar rap con varios MC. Tal vez Straight Outta Compton de NWA también, pero ya llegaremos ahi. En fin. El golden standar para este tipo de discos. Wu Tang forever. Me volvió a pegar el somit.

Bring Da Ruckus: Interessante ma non è decisamente il mio genere e bisognerebbe seguì i testi. La vedo dura! Vabbè è inutile che faccio pezzo per pezzo qua... Can It Be All So Simple / Intermission: questo m'è piaciuto, anche alcune immagini del testo me so piaciute. La base non so perché me ricorda un po' Tom's Diner di Suzanne Vega... Ho apprezzato il riferimento a Voltron nell'intervista alla fine. Da Mystery Of Chessboxin': Pure questa m'è piaciuta, m'è piaciuto lo sbroccume e alcuni pezzi del testo (peccato che poi ce devono buttà le stronzate sulle droghe) Method Man: Sicuramente ho apprezzato il fatto di sigillare il buco del culo dell'altro e poi continuare a dargli da mangiare. Conclusione: Eh.... come ogni volta che sento sta musica ho di nuovo la stessa sensazione: qua non si sta a parlà tanto di musica quanto di un fenomeno culturale che non capisco, me mancano proprio le basi culturali. Musicalmente è difficile da giudicare, c'è poco, ci sono delle cose anche mediamente raffinate nelle basi e pure nelle parti vocali un po' più sbroccate che ho apprezzato, però nun so che dì... La copertina è figa!
Le produzione di RZA sono impressionanti. Penso che se fossi inglese gli darei 5 stelle ma la barriera della lingua non me lo fa apprezzare a pieno.

Schon immer eins meiner lieblings Hip Hop Alben, alleine schon wegen Produktion, Flow und dieser Energie,aber erst jetzt, wo ich mich ein bisschen mehr mit den Texten beschäftigt habe, merke ich richtig, wie talentiert und intelligent diese Typen sind.

Really couldn't get anything positive out of this. Didn't like the music, but was able to simply ignore most of it except the most annoying tracks such as 7th chamber oder method man. Some of the voice samples/intros/interludes were extremely distracting and annoying. After half of the album I started skipping some parts. For me, clearly the worst album so far.

Okay, das wird allgemein als eines der besten HipHop Alben angesehen. Daher spannend, reinzuhören, so aus historischen Gesichtspunkten. Gibt mir das heute noch was - so volle Lautstärke in Mamas Clio durch die Kleinstadt, Gangsta Kartoffel?
Den historischen und kulturellen Wert dieses Albums erkenne ich an, auch wenn es keine Musik ist, die ich privat höre.
Leider nicht so leicht am Stück hörbar. Aber gutes Album, um Ursprünge des modernen Gangsterraps zu verstehen.
Macht spaß!
Hab's zum Sport gehört, bei Sonnenschein, was mich irgendwie motiviert hat und dem Album vermutlich einen zusätzlichen Stern beschert hat. Ansonsten nicht so meine Musik.

I remember buying this in high school at a Sam Goody with high hopes, then getting bored with the repetition and just waiting for the moments when ODB or Method Man would show up - the two of the Wu that were the funniest and had the most dynamic voice and flow. Years later I feel about the same way, but want to show growth and personal development so will say some good things. Anytime there's more melody in the production beyond drums and a 3 second piano loop, I'm in. The string of songs from Chessboxing>Nuthing>CREAM>Method is unimpeachable. This is way harder than their West Coast rivals. The Shaolin concept is cool as hell. Chillin chillin. B
Not only is 36 Chambers the best Wu-Tang album, but it’s one of the best hip-hop albums ever. Can’t think of a better ensemble album. Original sound, good flow, dope rhymes and a variety of themes. Started multiple legendary careers. A couple sounds tell a great story/have a good msg. This album has been in my regular rotation for years fir a reason. Easy 5.

Hell yeah! This album has so many good songs. Perfect for listening to in your car a little too loud, and drowning out the rest of the world. The only draw back is that the songs themselves are interspersed with interviews, and then it sometimes goes back to the song. I got confused a couple of times about which song I was actually listening to 🙃

For 90's rap collectives, Jurassic 5 > ATCQ > Wu-Tang > NWA, but you can't deny this is a great album

Brings me back to the days I listened to a lot of gangsta rap. Cool sound and beats, but not as good as acts like Public Enemy and N.W.A. Nice album though

So good. Surprisingly so. Was never into them when this album came out, and they’ve sort of passed me by a bit, whilst also enjoying most of what I did know of them. But I was always into bands like J5, Pharcyde and The Roots over Wu Tang. Really enjoyed hopping along to this album. Also way less aggy than I assumed it would be.

Didn’t the instant enjoyment from this as much as some of other 90s hip hop albums we’ve heard so far. Found each song pretty similar. But once it was on the headphones and en route to work it packed a punch

the musing on how they would torture each other at the beginning of "method man" is a highlight. it's a pretty puerile album. I actually like their later stuff. but this hasn't aged well.

Clan in da Front muy padre ritmo. En general lo que me gustó es la ondita chill que le aportan los loops de notas simples del piano que contrastan con la aspereza del cantó. Mood: pasivo agresivo

I was pretty determined to give this a high rating given its a seminal album in hip hop and music in general, but I feel that would be overly performative. I do like some wu-tang.. particularly protect ya neck but this really doesnt do it for me overall.

Lo primero que se me viene a la mente es que necesito reescuchar más veces este disco como para ponerle más atención. Lo que escuché, me gusté y me dejé llevar a veces, siento que cada vez me convenzo de que el hip-hop es un género que aunque no lo reconozco entre mis favoritos, nunca me molesta. Es sólo que quizá he escuchado muy poco. Acá hay mucho "flow" si se puede decir esto y beats muy pegajosos, creo que "C.R.E.A.M." y "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing ta F'Wit" son las que más me emocionaron, aunque siento que no hubo alguna que me disgustara. Por cierto, ni sabía nada de este disco ni de los Wu-Tang Clan. 8.5/10
Not much of a lyrics person, but a certain usually-unflappable wife just called what she heard ‘grotesque’. These guys have gnawn a cult following over the years, but haven’t gotten into them.

Never been a huge rap guy, but this was a cool listen. Don’t think I’ll ever come back to any of the songs or the album as a whole, but I enjoyed it. These albums for me are more enjoyable when taken as a whole than when looking at individual songs.
A side was a lot stronger than b. I do enjoy that style of rap, it was just a lot of the same
J-Roc is my favorite Wu Tang Clan member.

Having just listened to Method Man's "Tical", this album comes across as a bit unfocused? Or, I guess, it's more focused on mythology building than it is the music... Fave track - "C.R.E.A.M." - C'mon, that shiz is iconic.

Lyrics are corny, but in the way that keeps you interesting. "Human feces" etc line really did it for me. Also the use of the the lines what I assume was something from an show is very good, mixing media (MF DOOM esque)
It's pretty good as far as hip hop goes, but at the end of the day I just don't enjoy this genre much. Although Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing ta F'Wit is stuck in my head I have to admit. 2 stars.

A hip-hop MASTERPIECE.
Nothing like getting into the hard swearing right off the bat. It’s getting better as it gets further into the record. There was definitely a point where there was just so much swearing that I wasn’t sure I wanted to listen to the rest of it. I like the sound, and some of the content is appealing to me. Other parts of it, I don’t like as much, but…it might be a cultural thing?
Like it's great, the flow is great, but it's not really my thing I guess?
A couple good hits but overall not my style.

Ich hab vorher noch nie WuTang Clan gehört, aber es sofort erkannt - weil der Sound so viel beinflusst hat und so oft zitiert wird. Auch die Texte sind direkt politisch, ganz selbstverständlich, weil die Themen direkt aus dem Alltag kommen - sehr beeindruckend.
Love this album, when Ghostface starts on ‘Bring Da Ruckus’ you’re in for a wild ride. The group helped make New York Hip Hop and this album is some of the best. It shows with tracks like ‘Method Man’, C.R.E.A.M. and ‘Da Mystery of Chessboxing’, these should be in any Hip-Hop Playlist. Method Man and Raekwon are especially good in this album along with Ghostface and GZA which are always consistent. The only issue I have found with this album over time is that I normally skip some tracks for example ‘Can It Be All So Simple’ seems out and place, it by far the weakest track/skit. It leads to the album feeling especially long with the skits before or after some tracks. Overall, this album will always be one of the best Hip Hop albums along with Wu-Tang as they have a unique style.

I know that Wu-Tang is like, rap royalty. They're boom-bap kings. But ... I kinda hate 'em. The lyrics are trash. Content and delivery. All pointless. The beats are repetitive and unimaginative. The whole kung-fu flavor just comes off goofy as hell. Every single member of Wu-Tang went on to make music that was SO MUCH BETTER THAN WU-TANG. Two stars for cultural importance only.
