Reviews (page 4 of 7)

I appreciate what they were trying to do but Bowie did it 100 times better.

Every good song was offset by a song that was just a little too weird.

Into it. The cover gave me different expectations so was pleasantly surprised. Vocals remind me of David Byrne. First song was my fav.

Some very good, but also some very odd with an very annoying singing voice that I don't get on with.

Love the synths on this album. Very dystopian. Obviously the first track is a banger but loved the vibe of the rest of the album.

Had me in the first half

Solid rock album, Television started playing after on Spotify and got me to listen to their entire disco, so that was very nice.

I liked 2HB, but the rest lacked for me

Loved the music in “Is there something?” and the album in general was a nice surprise.

Roxy Music

Bryan Ferry's voice reminds me of Paul Smith from Maxïmo Park.

non mi ha trasmesso niente di particolare

Alright but not one of their best

Pretty solid, despite none of their big songs in it.

This one was not bad

Can definitely see how this influenced Talking Heads. Very similar vibe. Probably ahead of it's time. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

"is there something" is best song by faaaar all the others lowk mid

First song is a banger. Cool album.

I like Roxy Music, this one is not quite to the heights they will hit. Though the foundation is there, very fun, complex sound, vocals really catch the ear. Can’t wait for more Roxy to come along 2.5

Five distinct talents that don’t really go together, except when they do

Was way more experimental than I went in expecting. Need to revisit bc I didn’t spend a ton of time with this one

S'alright

Don't love roxy music but at least the music isn't boring

I want to like Roxy Music. It's got most of the basic elements of a band I'd usually like. The guitar/bass/drums sections seem to like to play, mostly in tune, mostly in time. There are the occasional saxophone honks. They seem to want to rock. But I'm finding this one a little painful, probably because I want to like it more than I actually do. None of the songs have an actual hook to them and the singer seems to be doing whatever he can to divert my attention to his somewhat annoying vocal inflections and idiosyncrasies. I feel like Roxy Music was probably of one of those hipster bands of the 70's, the band the really cool kids were listening to. But, like most well-guarded hipster secrets, it low key kinda sucks and there's a reason there was never any real mass appeal surrounding this record. 5.5/10 I think I have to give this one a 3-star rating. It's not quite so bad as to deserve 2, but dammit, it's right on the cusp for me.

I guess it earned its spot on this list by being the most forgettable album in the world. I vaguely remember enjoying myself, but not much more than that.

Decent.

Not my usual jam but something about the singer and arrangement drew me in.

This sounds ahead of it's time and It's giving me another clue as to why 1980s music sounds the way it does. They are doing something here, Im just not really into it.

I have come to the conclusion that I just don’t understand who Roxy Music is. Seems like their music is all over the place. I kind of like it. But then I’m not sure.

Kooky and fun. Roxy Music made lots of changes to their sound before hitting the Avalon groove.

eclectic album. the tags in the first track are pretty funny. "the bob (medley)" reminds me of some sort of proto-ween. half of "sea breeze" is horrible and the bass is out of tune.

I could see how this would be a good influence on music that came after... But it's messy in a bad way.

Me gustan las primeras canciones

Lowkey flamboyant.

Kinda interesting. Some of it is enjoyable. It's a different sound.

not bad, although a bit more hit and miss than some other albums

Straddles the line between experimental styles and glam rock. The vocals are a bit jarring.

Fun music from the 70’s. Definitely the 70’s sound. Good music.

Random thoughts: * Pretty cool glam rock album. You could hear some of the sounds that Bowie made more famous in here. * I was familiar with 2HB which I finally realized was about Humphrey Bogart. Because I was familiar with this one it was the one I liked best but the rest of the album was quite good too. * It had lots of styles going on and didn't stay in any one place too long. * This was a worthy 1001 album if nothing else to highlight the origins of Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno who ended up having such an influence on 70s rock and beyond.

On the Road...Update later

So far, the best song is "If There Is Something." Peak art rock. Fun to listen to and maybe have in your rotation.

3.0 - Ok

Get why it's so influential, but it's very much a mixed bag and nothing particularly stood out as wonderful

It was fine. I need more female artists on this list though. I thought this was would be a lady based on the name and cover but NOPE

Some really strong moments. 'Is this something' builds to a prog/Zep style ending with Ferry warbling emotionally over it. Bit of a mixed bag though. Solid album worth a listen.

No. 119 Dug it, kinda faded on the back half

I don’t know why I never got to hear Roxy Music but I’m sure glad this came up as it was a great listen. It was more progressive and experimental than I thought it was going to be which made for a fun and engaging listen. Now I’m hooked and need to hear the rest of their discography to figure out how this fits into Brian Eno’s works and who this Bryan Ferry guy is. Also what a great album cover. I love the expression on her face!

Liked: Re-Make/Re-Model, If There Is Something, Sea Breezes Added: If There Is Something, Sea Breezes

I can see how Eno has been so influential if this is what he was doing all the way back in 72. I feel like the lyrics and singing are really holding the album back.

My first time I ever listened to Roxy Music. It was a good album musically and you can understand why Brian Eno left the group. I loved the heaviness of the music. I did not care for Bryan Ferry’s singing. I would it was a good album and I’m glad I heard it.

2.8 stars

That band name with that cover had me going in with wildly different expectations.

Solid debut with great bass playing and lots of variety. You could tell Eno needed to go solo, as his synth didn't quite fit in with the rest. Liked Songs Added: Virginia Plain 2HB

Before: This is one of those albums that I feel like maybe I should like more than I do. Let's give it another shot. I do know I like Avalon more than this one, and it's not even on this list, but I do see 2 other Roxy Music albums. Whoo-hoo. (he says unenthusiastically) During: They released this in 1972, really? I was not listening to anything even remotely like this at the time. The opening tracks have elements that sound almost like precursors to new-wave. Of course, in 1972, I was only 9. I think my favorite band at that time was Chicago, mainly because I had received one of their albums as a Christmas present, along with a portable turntable. It was my first album and I was very proud of it. After : I can see how this is on this list given that it was released in 1972, it seems somewhat ground breaking. Still, it's not something I personally enjoy listening too. I am sure I would feel differently if I had known about these guys at an earlier age. Favorite track was "If There Is Something". I'll add that one to my 1972 playlist.

That's not my taste in music - But ok

Very Eno. Easy to listen to but not mind blowing.

Once again, another album that was fine but not incredible. Enjoyed well enough to let it loop through, but it was, in reality, just background music. 3/5

Fine, nothing special for me

Classiccccx

Can't explain what I liked but I didn't hate it

I’d never even heard of Roxy Music before this project, and I’m honestly shocked this is the third or fourth of their albums in the list. I’m not really looking forward to it. —- Yep, pretty much the same as the others, where I’m not entirely sure what I think of it. I always forget their sound until I hear it again. It’s not BAD bad in any way I can pinpoint, and sometimes I even kind of like it (the keyboard is good, and there are some interesting and sophisticated experimental aspects), but it still started to feel like a slog. I think the singer must be my main issue. 4 tracks in, I felt like “yeah, I get the idea, do I really need to keep listening?” But I did, of course, and it was fine. “Sea Breezes” was actually pretty good and had some lovely instrumentation going on (well, the first half, at least). 800+ albums in and I’m not changing my ways, but I do think that listening to these right before bed has a big impact on how I feel about them. In any case, I emphatically think that one Roxy Music album on the list was enough.

First listen

I enjoyed it more than I expected.

B side almost put me to sleep, A side is definitely stronger. Also, shout out to Brian Eno. 6/10

I reviewed my last 2 Roxy Music reviews and they're all say things like "kid of weird" , "cool psych elements" , "david bowie" , "pop rock." I think all of that applies to this album as well. I enjoyed it. I think I probably liked this one the most out of the 3 that I've listened to.

Thought the album was written by a woman. Disappointing, but still solid. Fav song: The Bob (Melody)

glaub mer hend no kei roxy music gha? min dad het die glaub recht gern. erste song tönt schomol seeehr guet, weiss nöd wie sehr ich das bowie-mässige sax wo afoch mit de chords mitspielt mag. aber s het uhuere zug und er singt zimli geil. if there is something isch meeega geil, melodie super chords ultracool. ui de schluss mit chörli und andere chords (?) isch jo insane schön. ui. like. virginia plain isch mer glaub chli sehr simpel, aso tönt immerno cool und oboe isch sehr cool und jo de synth vom brian enerdougg isch hardometer. drumgeoove uf 2HB huere geil. aso am aafang vorallem. song susch chli a mir verbii. the bob no heavy irgendwie aso so rock. und s tüüfe sax macht no viel döt dure findi. ok nocher schussgrüüsch i guess? hö. dioiiiiiiiiii flugii chrieg? walauft hett erwartet dasi meh devo halt. 3.

Really interesting musically, weird voice.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Lot of cool and interesting things going on throughout this album. Loses the plot at times, especially on the 2nd half. Not the biggest fan of Bryan Ferry's voice.

Liked it.

Operatic and adventurous but it isn't really sticking with me

Fine. I know I like some Roxy Music, but this didn’t do it for me today.

Review - A decent glam album of it's era. Brian Ferry's voice is distinctive enough to make them stand out, and the good tracks are worth a listen. Too many tracks with a twee rock n roll pastiche sound to them for my liking though. Rating - 6.5/10 Need to hear? KINDA

i don't really know how to rate this. i think the production of the songs was actually phenomal, songs like "if there is something", "would you believe?" or "bitters end" were really enjoyable. but i don't think i will listen to it on a daily basis

It wasn't bad, but I doubt I'll listen to it again. The sound is quite interesting and the songs are catchy in places, The Bob (Medley) sounds really nice. Rate 6/10

Some nice harmonies and instrumentals.

Listened Before? N Really broad early-70s rock album. This thing ranges all over the map from post-punk to pop to new wave. I really liked the second half better with it's slower, more thoughtful songs. Apparently this list has 3 albums by RM on it, and this is my first one at 969 so I guess I better get ready to hear a bunch of these guys in the next 6 moths or so. Could be worse! Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: 2HB

Pretty interesting, although I thought the B-side was significantly weaker. Very interesting comparing this to the music Eno makes just 5-6 years later.

Interesting- arty, seems early alternative music

Started to listen. It’s fine, but the first week of music sounds all the same. I’m wondering where this list is going…

This was ok, not one of my favourites really. 3 stars

Forgettable

A really good fun listen. I like Bryan Ferry as a vocalist. Seems like a hybrid cross between Beatles and Bowie to me in parts and one song, the last track I think, reminded me of The Monster Mash as it had the same riff and tune somwhere in there. I think they must have influenced Talking Heads as it reminded me of that in parts. Reckon this is somewhere between 3 and 4 but can't do half scores. Will go for 3 as somehow a bit less than the sum of its parts seeing as it has both Eno and Ferry, two of music's great names

Whilst being waaaaay too artsy and quirky for my taste, this is still a decent listen. Inbetween the odd medleys and experimental sections, there are great grooves and instrumentals glued together with pretty solid songwriting, with intriguing quips and changes in pace throughout. Unfortunately though, whilst I'm sure experimentation was key to the production of this album, far too often it felt like too much and made for a slightly jarring flow.

This had some interesting sounds. Kinda felt like a good band missing a lead singer. But a decent listen. 3.5.

liked it Fav songs: 2HB

Pretty cool, but also kind of annoying at times?

Quirky, discordant but interesting arrangements.

Pretty good - and there’s more to come

First time listening to this album. Really enjoyed it. I would say it’s really a 3.9 if we could be more granular. Listened to it again when it finished.

You know, this is the best offering so far by them. It would likely be a 4 but Bryan Ferry’s vocals knock at least a point off. Not even sure how to describe them other than unbearable at times. Arch maybe? Oh, and their album covers are tacky

Some great tunes and some big swings. Less cohesive than their later work but the highs are higher.

For me, for better or worse, the album lacks a clear sense of cohesion, which makes it challenging to listen to. Still, there are moments that pull me in — Chance Meeting, for example, is unsettling but oddly compelling, leaving me curious despite the unease.

Gotta say that I love Roxy Music, this album has just one great hit, Virginia Plain, the name based on a painting by Ferry of a packet of Virginia Slims cigarettes, the rest are a bit of a let down. Very hit and miss. The cover was a former Bond girl Kari-Ann Muller, paid £20 to appear on the cover. Don't feel sorry for her though, she went on to marry Mick Jagger's brother. Having a very nice life due to being born with looks and luck.

enjoyed the horns throughout the album

Okay. Good

Not as good as For Your Pleasure, but still decent enough.

I love the music on this, 4 stars. Had heard of Roxy Music but never listened. The vocals throw it off for me. It’s a style I just can’t enjoy.

Brian Eno fucks around with art school dudes who kinda know how to write and occasionally songs happen

not bad!

This Roxy Music album was better than the other one we got, but I don’t care for Bryan Ferry’s voice.

Interesting but not sure if I’ll come back to it. The first song sounded like if Chicago was fronted by David Byrne.

Early 70s rock, didn't love it, didn't hate it.

Didn’t really care too much for this one. Some of the earlier tracks were okay

Can’t describe felt like Yoko at times

Eclectic mix of country honky tonk, lounge, punk

Musically interesting and Ferry's warble didn't bother me as much as expected. Roxy are wirth another look

I don't have anything to say right now, but I had never heard the whole of this album before, and I liked it.

Early not bad- but I prefer later Roxy Music. Brian Ferry’s voice is distinctive and smooth.

It's alright, didnt blow me away.

3/5 I think it’s good but not particularly my cup of tea

A 3.5 album, really enjoyed it, long intros which i liked most of them, very good decade for music.

Un peu quétaine.

I love the music of this album. Very creative and “out there”. Album starts high energy and seems to turn more somber towards the end.

I would've preferred to kick this record off without the image of this indigestion victim in my mind's eye, because the music of the first track announces itself like a more polished Pere Ubu than a gassy beauty queen. There's a sense of humor that's both generational and regional that I'm missing the gear for, so whatever's intended has been let slip, despite being evocative and powerful enough for me to exhaust nearly three sentences on. There's definitely something weird and wondrous about Roxy Music. Please note I did not say wonderful. They seem a band whose success rests on fine and wry distinctions, so let's be clear about my position: when it comes to their music, they often don't evoke a personal feeling that's positive, but rather they're pushing into such odd territories that I marvel at their choices. If I could travel back in time to 1972, maybe I'd feel a clearing of the decks by some of the gestures here more than I pick up on them now. I might be able to proclaim them as trickster Art Rock geniuses donning the costume of popular music as they sneak invention into your home by way of the strangest sibling, only to push aside expectation and open the door to the esoteric. In that time, perhaps it was the use of glam rock artifice as a phalanx. There's as much to like as dislike on the first half alone — notes of Zappa, Genesis, Beefheart falling in love with and digesting the music of their youth, and a foreshadowing of Devo yet to come — shame the second seems to collapse a bit like a beauty queen run out of gas, but I can only imagine the sequencing was deliberate, like a coded message no one can ever fully understand.

This was fine, nothing particularly stood out.

Always wanted to give these guys a deeper look. Some cool and interesting sounds, especially rhythmically. None of the songs themselves really grab me though. Eno seems like kind of a starfucker.

Super ahead-of-its-time in sound. Experimental 70s stuff is very cool. David Byrne obviously really loved this group. I think I prefer the late 70s early 80s AOR stuff from them though

One of their albums was on this list earlier on. That was my first listen of this artist. So Interested to check this out too, their debut album. Not my kind of music. I thought it was Talking Heads for a quick minute.

What a rollercoaster. Started cool, got lame, then weird!

Ok. Liked it better than the other one but not by much

Very quirky rock music. The over the top, warbling vocals can be a bit much but I was enjoying it more on the second listen. I suspect that it might take a few more listens to really click. Virginia Plain was a clear standout.

This was fine.

Really interesting and before its time. All over the place stylistically with no standout tunes, just good.

A few stinkies but also some really good ones too. 3.5

OK, I really like later Roxy Music stuff, especially in the 80's. I get that this early stuff was them expermenting and what not. But it's just not my jam. I appreciate the music though, so I'm not going to bash it. I just don't want to listen to it. 2.5 / 5 stars

Well, that definitely wasn't bad, but idk, something feels off for me in this album. Maybe, its age, or maybe something else. Just not my thing, I guess.

A weirdly inconsistent album. Like a knock off Bowie at times, musically interesting at others. The vocals do nothing for me and some of this barely sounded like music.

Give it a 3

A little less light than I thought Pleasant surprise

Basically, this was Radiohead for my parents. Although I’m pretty sure my parents weren’t cool enough to listen.

Pretty good

Just weird enough to be interesting, too weird to be great.

I'm begrudgingly learning that I don't hate Roxy Music. Pretty solid album with some real bangers.

Rating: 6.5/10 Sounds ahead of its time but for some reason did not completely grab me. The production is amazing, might need to revisit this one.

Another fun 70s rock album Favorite track: rework/remodel other picks: if there is something, chance meeting, sea breezes

There are some great moments on here but the vocals just feel hampered by ability rather than chosen with intent. Sea Breezes is great and there are some crazy advanced ideas for the time but I don't know if I'll ever listen to this again. 3.5*

They say not to judge a book by its cover. The same often goes for albums and Roxy Music’s self-titled LP is a prime example – I’m not sure what I expected going into this one, but it certainly wasn’t what I got! I don’t have a ton to say here, other than that I appreciate how weird the album lets itself get at times. The songs themselves generally aren’t astounding and they get much less memorable in the project’s back half, but there are at least a handful of interesting listens here. I don’t know if I’m the only one who feels this way, but I reckon Brian Eno’s contributions to this particular album are probably a bit overstated. Yes, he was a part of Roxy Music’s lineup at the time of this album’s release, but he’s not credited as a writer or producer on any of the songs. I love Eno as much as the next guy, but to think of this debut album as a “Brian Eno project” is probably a bit disingenuous – Roxy Music seems to be Bryan Ferry’s brainchild first and foremost. All in all, not my favorite album of this challenge so far, but I found much of the music to be decently compelling and I’m interested to eventually hear Roxy Music’s other entries on the list! Highlights: Re-Make/Re-Model, Ladytron, If There Is Something, Virginia Plain, Chance Meeting

Interesting.. Don't really dig his voice.

It was interesting and kind of strange to me but it's not my favorite music genre

If There Is Something I’d say about this album Would You Believe it?

I knew these guys peripherally so it was interesting to hear their early stuff.

Some decent parts but overall it is not interesting to me. 3 stars or C.

This was a weird and kinda fun debut after my junior year in high school. It has some cool stereo effects between Manzanera’s guitar work and Eno’s synthesizers. The songs start out decently but aren’t as good on side 2. Bryan Ferry’s warbly vocals don’t work as well here as they do in his later solos work,

Interesting at least. Proto new wave in 1972. Good music for someone, just not neccessarily me. I can appreciate its contribution to modern music but, can do without now that things have come after it. My one big question is who was this music for, or rather who listened to this music? It crosses so many boundaries (which aren't important but just for conversation). Is it goth? Punk? Posh? Experimental? Maybe thats the point. To everything all at once so it comes off as nothing.

tremendos solos de guitarra

Lo escuchare

2.8 I feel like I should like Roxy Music. I really enjoy Talking Heads, and it feels like the latter takes a lot of inspiration from the former. But the two main reasons why I can do it is Bryan Ferry's voice and the amount of brass. Brass should be used sparingly and not a key instrument in rock imo. But the voice man. If there is something starts off really good, but then 2 minutes in Ferry ruins it completely. "BLUEUEUEUEUE". Shut up man. Wasting everyone's time. Reduce the amount of brass, get rid of Ferry, and this is 4-5* territory. Thank god Eno left for better things.

Reminds me of Talking Heads

3.5 definitely a fun album, wish i enjoyed it more but i did enjoy it

listened before. within the context of that time with the mix of glam rock n roll with the experimentalism of Eno and the pop tendencies of Ferry it is pretty cool, but hard to hold up outside of that context. not very focused but can be an interesting listen. Virginia Plain is a pretty sick song

Huiii hani das wieder vergesse. Lose ez nüm es zweits mal dri. Aber gemmer demm 3 puntitos Will anschienend heds mi nöd gnervt

I don’t think I get Roxy Music. Perfectly serviceable rock of its time. No desire on my part to return to it.

It's nice but doesn't grip me. Again nothing much to say, not too good not too bad.

eiginlega síst enda þeirra fyrsta og sú síðasta sem ég tek í þessari yfirferð. lögin svipa til æfinga páls í bítlunum, með skrítnari útsetningum. en ég er ánægður, meira 3,5.

For a change I'm glad they put the US version on Spotify, because adding Virginia Plain was a very good idea. It's a bit up and down as an album, I'm not so keen on the experimental bits (must be getting old), but all in all a good album.

Liked it but not worth a relisten in my opinion

I'm generally a fan of Roxy Music and particularly Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry. This album is interesting and musically adventurous but Roxy Music became a much stronger band in later incarnations, even though Brian Eno left. I'm going to give this a three but I had trouble deciding between three and four. It's definitely future forward given when it was recorded, which makes me want to give it the higher rating, but conversely, there are tracks that don't work as well as others, so the quality of the album is uneven.

What am I even listening to? How does a band get from here to "Avalon"? File under "being influential is not the same as being something you want to listen to". (Or at least that I want to.) Am I glad I listened to it before I died? Maybe, though I also doubt I'd be lying on my deathbed saying "I wish...I wish I had listened to Roxy Music's debut album. Doctor, do I still have 42 minutes and 15 seconds to live?"

Ballt band men en del svaga låtar på denna

Helt okej

Älskar deras största hits men det här kändes mer anonymt

Var lite oengagerad men vi säger 3

Never been able to abide much Roxy music in one go. Remake/remodel is admittedly a huge opener, Virginia plain wasn’t actually on the original album press so not sure if that counts. I didn’t dislike it, but it was very apparent no one in the band was there saying ‘maybe let’s not add any squealing saxophone on this one’ and the castanets just irritate me when they appear out of nowhere, no song has been made better by the addition of castanets. Gets an extra point for being ahead of its time but 3 is generous

Didn’t not enjoy but totally disjointed and mad, maybe I am missing something 🤷🏼‍♀️ not sure I’d buy their album after w chance glasto encounter.

Okay, this was better than the last Roxy Music album that came up (For Your Pleasure). Not totally in love with it but I feel closer to understanding why it'd be on the list. I still think he sounds like Dracula on "Bitters End" but at least it's confined to there. Highlight: "If There is Something."

1. Re-Make/Re-Model 2. Virginia Plain 3. Ladytron

The most 80s sounding 70s album you’ll hear on this list

The first half was awesome, but I didn't like the other half. 3/5 is a fail rating

-so this is where Brian Eno got his musical start. i can definitely hear his influence and brilliance shining somewhere through this album, though i found the work overall to feel sort of aimless and unmemorable at times -it’s not exactly my favorite type of art rock but it was pretty cool nonetheless -Favorites are If There Is Something and Sea Breezes

Semi Glamrokkia, antaisin 3,5. En voi

Ihan jees! Taustamusana menee hyvin. Tykkäsin etenkin torvista ja monipuolisuudesta.

I didnt really like much of this but at least its varied. I did look at the band members and say that music terrorist brian enough so yea, some of it makes sense. What I will say is thats its way ahead of its time for 72. Think about what else is out then and what comes after it. So 3 stars, 2 for enjoyability, 1 extra for vision and inspiration.

Some creative elements but don’t see myself wanting to listen again.

Impressive for it's time, but I couldn't help but find some of the tracks as well as the lead singer's voice a bit grating. Familiar with Brian Eno so was intrigued when I read he was the original keyboardist. It's a technically sound album and I can appreciate the experimental nature of it all, but not an album I'd want to return to.

It’s a perfectly fine record mostly for Eno’s brilliant soundscapes that suggest the genius to come. There’s some killer tunes that emerge, but it’s very uneven and drags quite a bit of the time. Intriguing, but left me wanting a bit more.

It's kind of theatrical/glammy rock. Reminds me of Meatloaf. Some parts sound kind of theatrical/glammy (e.g. "Would You Believe?" and "Bitters End") - reminds me of Meatloaf. Some parts lean more towards psychedelic or classic rock. My favorite track is "The Bob (Medley)".

Interesting enough that I understand it's inclusion here, even if not all the songs grabbed me

Huge David Bowie and T Rex vibes, but feels a bit more scattered and less cohesive - things go experimental in spots, heavy on horns in another, and end with weird music hall vibes. I did enjoy discovering this is where Ladytron got their name, and that 2HB is the song my British roommate put on a mix tape for me back in the day - but otherwise not strong enough to rise above a 'Hmm, not bad,' rating.

A little bit Arty? A little bit Jazzy? Progy? Glamy? Rocky? All of the above? Very eclectic. Clearly Roxy Music were just trying to find their footing here, throwing ideas at the wall to see what would stick, weirdly ahead of its time... A bouncy delight overall.

This one started off really well. The first 5 tracks (4 if you're in the UK; Virginia Plain was a US added track) are all well done. After that, I find myself losing enthusiasm and the spark disengages for me. What I will commend it for is having Brian Eno on board for additional oddities here and there. That involvement adds to a sound that I can go for in comparison to Country Life. At a certain point though, it starts to get sluggish and less exciting (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)

Proto 80s, not very much my cup of tea but definitely good music

Thoughts before listening: Roxy Music is one of those bands that I want to like more than I actually do. Their music often comes off as too pretentious or something in my opinion. That being said, there are some songs I enjoy, and I believe this album will mostly be a first time listen for me, so perhaps I'll find something I like here. Review: So this album starts off with one of their better songs in "Re-make/Re-Model" which is a another in a long line of songs that is improved (at least to my ears) by saxophone. Saxophone in rock songs is just a great sound that has been a staple in music I love form Bruce Springsteen to Morphine to ska bands. Roxy Music employs this sound throughout this album, and its my favorite part of their sound. Another example of where the sax stands out to me is "If There is Something" which I am also really enjoying. Overall though, this album loses me in a lot of the songs...too arty for its own good or something I guess? I know its considered an important album, and its certainly not bad, just not for me maybe? Anyway, I'd give this 3-stars.

Too jazzy for my liking.

Started really strong with the first few tracks, but the back half was totally forgettable.

I was selling comix at rhe house of one of my comic customers. He had just moved in down the street from me and he invited my girlfriend and I over for snow ice cream. I wanted to go upstairs to his room but he kept acting as though I had been up there before and I had been too afraid. I took a spoonful of the snow to my mouth but it kept melting revealing dirt. I insisted that I poured some sugar in my bowl so it would cover up the taste of the the taste of dirt but it would require me to go upstairs. We also had to be really quiet bc he did not want us to wake up his wife. So instead he said he would just show me something. He was bare chested and flipped another bowl over on his chest and stomach. My girlfriend and I reacted in shock because we knew the bowl was 3rd degree Burns hot. He had no initial reaction to it and it left a blistered pattern of a kaleidoscope on his chest. Then he smiled. See? I don't feel pain. Was his reaction. Then suddenly his whole body tensed up. It was like he was possessed. His tendons in his neck looked thick as tree branches and his eyes rolled around in his head. Even though he didn't feel the pain his body still reacted to the pain. He went into a medative state and I ran up to his room, quietly though, to not wake up his wife. When I got up there I did remember why I wasn't supposed to like it up there. It was high up and only one room with no floorboards and a sense it may also have been haunted. I left his comics then came back down. My girlfriend was waiting and to some extent calming him down. It was as though the pain he was supposed to be feeling caused an alter of his to appear. A personality that did not recognize me. I opened his refrigerator door bc I was still wanting sugar and that's when his wife came in the room. Medium height dark skin blonde hair wearing a light pink bathrob. She seemed slightly annoyed there were people in her home and knew exactly what he had been doing then disappeared and he came back around. He wanted to show me something and it was a Facebook page with surveillance video of my ex wife. He scrolled down and it from another angle and she was doing the Charlton was a phantom. Then he said see and I was outside alone.

Alright

Some really interesting moments, but mostly relegates to background noise on the whole

Every track in this record sounded different from the last. I thought that this album started strong, and the quality diminished as it went on. At certain points, the difference in sound played in favour of this record. As the album continued, I felt like the tracks were sounding too experimental for me. One thing is assured, though; it is interesting. Favourite Track(s): Re-Make/Re-Model Least Favourite Track(s): Sea Breezes

Eeeeeh. This is fine I guess. Nothing really stood out to me.

Not a huge phan of the vocals, but the writing is pretty good as well as the production. Instrumentation was solid. The songs all felt a little sloppy in the sense that they wanted to achieve something bigger than they were capable of doing at the moment. The last two songs were a bit of a chore to get through, but still a good album and I enjoyed most of it. 3/5

Pretty good album. never heard it before.

This is a good album, and I am sure that in 1972 it had some buzz, but that year and era has so much more to offer. It is good classic rock but fells like one of the contributors to this list got this 45 ep for his 15th birthday and fell in love with it. There is nothing special about this album in general, but it is still enjoyable. But I did not "need to hear" this album to have more deeper understanding about music history and progression. 6.6/10 81/1001

Reminded me of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Classy record, though the first half is way more memorable than the latter half.

Pretty solid album. I always meant to listen to more Roxy Music. I should get on that.

Interesting album. I do love the album cover pictures a lot!

A unique-sounding album with some interesting instruments/sounds, but nothing really stood out as amazing to me.

Trochu tezko se kousalo, pritom normalne kapela bavi.

Highs and lows here

The music is fantastic. I don't think i can get over this absolute moron singing though. I want to give 4 but he just ruins it

I didn't mind this, but don't see myself coming back to it. 3/5

start was fun until the bob medley or whatever it was called came on. then it became scary 2hb was very good very unpredicted

Fínt listarokk. Fannst samt for your pleasure betri.

Eh, it’s okay.

Probably the weakest Roxy Music album I've heard so far (which suggests they improved as time went on, though kudos all the same for releasing a debut album as well-realised as this is). There just aren't as many tunes that really do it for me on this one, though, as ever, they've got style and an experimental spirit to fall back on, which helps keep my score respectable.

Points where this was pretty good and points where it was a bit too weird.

Didn’t get a chance to do a deep dive but this was a fun glam accompaniment to my commute to and from the office. Standout for me is the Humphrey Bogart tribute 2HB, a song I already liked from the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack (vocals by Thom Yorke on that version!). Also shoutout to Ladytron for providing a name to a cool electropop band.

Roxy Music sound fully formed on their debut. Dramatic. Glammy. Moody. Epic. Strange. Like a crushed velvet suit worn by a 70s lounge singer. I really enjoyed this thing. I knew them going into this record... mainly the singles. I love Do the Strand. And this album did not disappoint. Their music is part big band Sinatra, part bowie glam, part manic punk energy. My main complaint is that I wish there were more hooks on this thing, more choruses that stuck with me... like they'd have on future releases. I give this thing a 3.5. Random thoughts... The horns and piano are a real highlight. They really drive the tracks forward and give them a lot of flavour. I don't know if Brian Ferry is an asshole, but he certainly gives off that vibe while singing... and I dig it. There's something arrogant, yet pathetic about him. His voice, his phrasing... it's very distinct. I really love when he fully freaks out on the mic - it gives tracks a punk vibe. Virginia Plain is great - love the opening vocal melody. it hooks you right away. Love the end of If There Is Something - transcendent The synth work is tasteful... sometimes synth sounds in this era don't age well (see The The). Love the 50s doo wop vibe of the closer. I swear the opener has a tiny bass solo that is a beatles reference The songs are long... but they don't feel long

They're doing too much. This album mixes like 5 or 6 different genres with no cohesive theme. Most individual songs are pretty good on their own but as an album it's kind of a jumbled mess.

Glam rock sounding. Most interesting part was hearing original versions of songs that were featured in the film Velvet Goldmine. Did get a little bored towards end

Most of this album is quite good. At least interesting. I like the noisy horns. It's weird, I like the album but I think the songs are just OK

I don't know. It's fine. I wouldn't listen to it on purpose, but it's not offensive as background music. I can definitely see the bones of good music that came after, so I guess I appreciate the trailblazing aspect of what I'm listening to. and it's miles better than the Brian Eno album I got. As an aside, I couldn't tell if the album cover is a lady, or a guy in drag. So I googled it, as one does, and apparently she married Mick Jagger's brother, and that's how I found out that Mick Jagger has a brother that, at one point, looked *just* like him.

It was pretty good. Nothing I’ll come back to again but enjoyed it whilst it was playing

The album is 90% attitude, 10% actual music.

Every song has potential to be a smash hit, but fell flat. The songs never reached their climax, if that makes sense. It had so much potential to be the full five stars Favorite Track: "Sea Breezes".

I’m really done with this band. You can argue all you want about how artistic they are, but they can also be nonsensical and lacking of any strong direction. It’s just nonsense. The sax fucks, that’s about it.

I had no idea what to expect so I was going into this cold. I liked the glam vibe and enjoyed it overall.

Fascinating album.

such a unique and fun debut project... sadly it lost me at the last two tracks: what were those?? 3/5 🍬

Bändin paras, uskoisin. Avausbiisi tavoittaa jotain siitä 'showsta', josta levyllä halutaan maalata mielikuvaa. Suosittu Virginia Plain tyydyttää vähintään soundillisesti. Ja sitten on de facto -lopetus Sea Breezes: helvetin hyvä intro- ja outromelodia + perusteltu rakenne/kesto (7:03).

this list loves Roxy Music - I do not (although this was better than the other RM records on here)

This album feels like the out/alt takes of mythical greater album. It isn't that the album isn't good. It is. It is masterfully produced by Brian Eno. It has some solid tracks, but it is just quirky enough to make you feel like there is something better out there that built upon this album.

I did like it but I don't know if I would listen to the album by itself again just to do it.

Not my style, but good all the same.

Det är lite mellanmjölk det här. Ganska okej ändå.

Odd but kinda liked

It’s weird and I wanted to like it but nothing grabbed me

Dunno, fine in places, challenging in others, loved avalon. This seems a bit more of a mess. Brian ferry's vibrato in places absolutely immense, however, and Brian Eno has some lovely little electro details.

Some music

Interesting album, but not as good as the later album of theirs I've gotten on this list.

I have seldom been so happy to reach the last track. Was not feeling this. It wasn't intrinsically bad, just not for me.

Worth a relisten

Not horrible.

This isn't half bad. Favourite tracks: Re-Make/Re-Model, Ladytron, If There Is Something, Virginia Plain, Chance Meeting,

mediocre

This is kinda like if the talking heads weren’t as good and lacked that bit of imagination that makes them special.

I thought the lady on the album art was going to be the musician. I don't know if that would have made this better or worse. It's fine.

Some good, catchy songs

I'm not really into this one either.

I do like Roxy Music but also find their early stuff a bit strange at times, especially Ferrys yodelling! Still an enjoyable listen and probably a bit of a surprise for those who think they were all lounge suits and smooth ballads.

Good not great. Sorry, Brian.

It's alright. Nothing stood out, but nothing was really bad either.

Certainly one of the more interesting albums I’ve listened to. I liked a decent amount of this. Still don’t know what the hell was going on for a lot of side 2, though - some of it was good, but a lot of it was weirdness for weirdness’s sake.

Don't like Bryan Ferry but this album surprised me.

Bryan ferry gets a bit annoying.

Fav: Would You Believe? Least Fav: Bitters End It’s a 3 for now, undecided on how I feel but you can tell Brian Eno was part of this

That wasn't quite what I expected, but I think I liked it!

Better than most 3s. But in the end only with flashes of brilliance.

An okay album, I liked Ladytron the most.

A little noisy. I can appreciate that, but I've been in a different mode lately... this probably will be something I need to revisit when I am in the right frame of mind for it.

Favorite Track: Re-Make/Re-Model

Interesting music, painful vocals. 2.9.

Liked it, different from the later stuff, but I like the later stuff more

Good but again my issues is that a lot of these albums sound the same

Standard Brit rock vocal feel. Nothing bad but nothing standing out too positively either.

Not what I expected. And better.

Good listen! 3.5/5

Not terribly memorable but still pretty good.

Favorite Track: 2HB

this is a far cry from avalon and flesh and blood some bright spots don't hide the fact that this is overall a bit mid for roxy music's extremely high standards ends strongly best song: sea breezes worst song: remake/remodel

Enjoyed it. Didn't love it. Kinda sounded exactly as i expected.

Some nice songs

Bizarre fun. Look forward to spending more time with it.

I haven’t been able to latch onto this one and find something I really like. It’s good, it’s just hard to decipher. I feel like I could get to a 4 if I sat with this for a little more, but got to keep moving through the list.

it sounds like two parts influential and one part something that I want to actually listen to now, but it's cool and interesting

I can still call this a good album despite how inconsistent it is. It just constantly reeled me in, then lost me, then reeled me back in, then lost me...

Musically some compositionally interesting ideas, but the vocals didn’t do it for me

Very fun rock.

I kinda liked this album. There is a variety of styles and you can see the later version of Roxy Music in parts. Not sure I will listen again, but one listen to this first incarnation of Roxy Music was fine...

Its fine

Would it be bad to say, it's almost what I expected a whole Roxy Music album to sound like. Some of its OK, some of it was frankly rubbish. Middle of the road at it's finest.
