Easily one of the best Wu Tang solo albums. Got the whole Clan on it with "9 Milli Bros," and the producer lineup is like The Avengers of beatmakers from this era. Despite being focused on hardcore street storytelling, it manages to have a nice variety of moods and tones.

It's fine. Some interesting instrumental flourishes at times but not a huge style of the cadence, I can see why people would really like it though, but ultimately not my thing. By god do I hate the skits though. Also Ghostface Killa loves referring to women as "females". Bro.

I always really like when rap/hip hop songs are more than just rhymes and a beat - when there's musicality and interesting backing tracks. That's how this whole album was. I never felt overwhelmed by raps and beats, it just flowed nicely from one song to another. And it didn't even feel like this was 19 full songs

There is a nice variety of sounds and styles driving the tracks on this album. I really like this one. My ears were engaged in the music and the lyrics are a mix of really hardcore, tough, deep stuff, tons of profanity, and some fun stuff. Great energy in this album. The songs are very well arranged and orchestrated, too.

An example of you know good music when you hear it

I wrote out a really long review but it got lost so the brief version: I love how we get so many sides of Ghost on this album, from “Shakey Dog” to “Momma” and topping it off with “Three Bricks” we ride through his past, his present, his daydreams. The storytelling is excellent, it makes me feel like I’m hanging with him, really getting to know him. We see production from some HUGE names. Pete Rock, DOOM, Dilla, Just Blaze (“The Champ” has one of my favorite lines “My arts is crafty darts, why y’all stuck on Laffy Taffy? // Wondering, how did y’all [neighbors] get past me? // I been doing this before Nas dropped the Nasty“) We get some skits like the opener with some very silly Tom Cruise lines about slashing a dude’s face with Vanilla Sky reference thrown in. We get the Wu (including ODB) on “9 Milli Bros” with some classic mic passing. My only gripe with this thing is that it is a little long. These tracks are insane don’t get me wrong but there were a few that I personally don’t think I’d mind living without. Giving this one a 3/5 because I do feel like the length got to me and distracted me enough to dock a point but it is so so so damn close to a 4. Still, I gotta stick to my guns with this limited review system.

Great beats like most early hip hop, but the length made them blend together. Comparing it with the last album, the grooves were overall slightly worse but I couldn’t really hear the lyrics so they didn’t put me off

This is the album that kept me from listening to the last 10+ days of 1001 assigned albums. This album absolutely floored me. I’ve listened to it countless times. The storytelling is so vivid, the wordplay so nuanced, and the production and sampling is just some of the best ever. I could go on…but it’s just all-time hip-hop album.

This is good! I should have been listening to Ghostface Killah way more when I was in the phase for this, somehow his solo work completely blew me by. It's moving, his verses really pull you right into a vice grip with their imagery, the skits are wild and funny. Pretty much everything I could hope for from a release like this. I just didn't enjoy myself too much... this album kind of made me stressed. Usually there's enough balance in the production, or enough funny, to offset this, to make something more colorful. There's a little bit of balance on this album, but for me not enough. Some of the productions are amazing, however, great examples of the period. 3/5

Ghostface is such a technically talented rapper that I don’t even need to like his songs that much to enjoy listening. The skits are a bit much but I think the content makes up for it. Loved the biggie feature at the end. Big Girl was my favorite.

the last truly great wu tang album along with cuban linx 2. Basically every song here is a banger, and with some great features too. the champ might be one of the greatest rap songs ever.

Happy I finally have a reason to listen to this album. The production on this album was quite 50/50 but the better fifty was some of the best production on any of Ghostfaces work. Suprised that this album is on this list instead of Ironman and Supreme Clientele which are two clearly superior albums, this is still good though and Ghostface is one of the best rappers of all time. 4.2/5

Toffe beats met tering teksten, zo jammer.

Zonder rap klonk het als een fijne laidback versie van Funkadelic en Parliament. Maar dat was niet zo.

Helemaal met Sander eens dat een instrumentale versie van deze plaat me een heel stuk beter zou bevallen. Maar dat oeverloze gezwam over allerlei stoere dingen die meneer Killah heeft uitgehaald in zijn leven is doodvermoeiend en ronduit vervelend.

Bij de eerste track liep het me bijkans dun door de broek. Gelukkig werd het nog iets minder erg. Duurde wel veel te lang.

I just feel really old listening to this, I'm not even motivated to be snarky about it. Even the ropey words don't give me the shits, I'm just bored by it. I think this process really needs a cracking record and soon..

As background music, I quite liked the sound of most of the tracks. But on closer attention to the lyrics - no thanks!

The first half dozen tracks, which were very much about drugs, didn’t thrill me greatly. Then the extremely funny skit Called Heart Street Directions made me laugh so much (as did the Bad Mouth Kid skit a bit later) & it seemed that the music just got better from then on. I particularly liked RAGU, with it’s Look Of Love sample, Whip You With A Strap, Jellyfish, Momma, with cool vocals by Megan Rochell, & Three Bricks, with its Biggie samples. A really great listen.

Another Wu-Tang album. OK, I like the woozy and gritty lo-fi funk feelof the backing tracks of this album; the opening salvo of Shakey Dog, Kilo and The Champ is a fantastic opening. There are a zillion producers across this album, but there is a consistent feel across the album. I suspect that is the influence of Dilla. even though he only produced two tracks, the fingerprints of his time technique is all through this record. And it has the trademark Wu-Tang grittiness and cinematic scale; check out the horn stabs and soulful wailing on Shakey Dog. That said, this has the weakness of most hip-hop albums of its vintage; too long, too many skits, casual misogyny, and I am bored to death with lyrics about drug dealing. There are a few weak tracks in the back end of this record that could easily be edited out, along with all the skits. What is the obsession with skits on hip-hop records? They are NEVER good. Not even the skits on "3ft high and rising" But I will give this three stars for that opening run of songs, which I really dig.

music is pretty good, quite psychedelic in places and with fun samples. Vocals are unfortunately really cartoonish so overall it's not really for me. Who gives a fuck about Tony Stark?

Great solo joint by Ghostface! It has a great mix of original Wu-Tang vibes mixed with new approaches to beats/production.

A little too rappy for my old school self but enjoyed listening.

I have always been a fan of Wu-Tang Clan and their various incarnations. While hip-hop does not have singer songwriters in the conventional sense, they do have storytellers and Ghostface Killah has always been a great one. At times he is almost literary. Consider the imagery in Shakey Dog. It reads like an outline for a movie. Good stuff all around, in a genre I am usually critical of.

I didn't hate it, but not really for me. Too dark and violent.

I was really impressed by this album. Ghostface is a great rapper still interested in showing off his skills 15 years into his career on FishScale. The soul-based production was great too. I could always do without the skits on a rap album and would have made it shorter but I will listen to this again for sure. Fun fact: He did a concert at Vassar when I was there and went on earlier than scheduled bc he was already there and wanted to leave lol.

I quite enjoyed songs like Champ, Back Like That and Be Easy due to Ghostface Killah’s flow and rhythm. There is interesting use of sampling, which helps to add texture to the songs. This album could have easily gone without the skits, as it was already suffering with a bloated tracklist.

So much rap and hip hop lately. This was better and more creative than I expected it to be. I didn’t hate it but I can’t say I’d listen to it again.

Twice I tried to get on with this album. Some tracks were more melodic but some were not just a ranting rapper but also a ranting beat so I’m afraid I gave up and if I could give 0 I would ! 1* will have to suffice.

It was OK.

Top notch lyricism from a rapper that has it all. A cool voice and a strong flow. The production is perfect and sounds classic and contemporary at the same time. Iconic features take it to the next level as well.

I really liked the flow of most of the tracks on this one. Hadn't heard it before. Skits are still cringy though.

-The chorus of "Back Like That" is a catchy kind of R&B thing -Shoutout to "Kilo" for spreading awareness of the metric system. As they say "A kilo is 1000 grams / It's easy to remember" -The guitar on "The Champ" is sweet -"Three Brick" is about bricks (epic) and it's pretty cool, especially Biggie's verse -Overall the album didn't blow my mind but it was nice enough

One of the best rap albums I've ever heard. Mr. Killah is a powerhouse and absolutely relentless. Every track was enjoyable. He did not miss. 4/5

This is okay. Kind of like Jay-Z with way more gratuitous swearing. Parts seem very interesting with good samples, but I don't quite see how this is a breakthrough in music.

Uhh. Yeah, hate the topics and personality of most all of these songs, but totally dig the beats behind a couple of them. 9 Milli Bros, for one, is great. Also, dig the 1970s vibes that run behind a lot of these songs. However, the underworld thug-y garbage themes rest above the beats is super-disappointing and difficult to listen to.

Filling in missing reviews brought me to a trio of Wu-Tang solo albums, best discussed together in a 3-in-1 review. Already having reviewed “Return to the 36 Chambers” and GZA’s “Liquid Swords,” how do these other Wu-Tang efforts hold up? While these are regarded as solo albums, the members’ first solo albums were all produced by RZA and each feature many Wu-Tang members. They even battled each other for RZA’s best beats - these are solo but Wu-Tang was still very much a collective. But they each have their own style that distinguishes them. Method Man’s “Tical” is my favorite of four solo albums - he brings the right amount of whimsy and fun to some otherwise hard-edged music, and it’s more about getting high than violence. He also keeps things concise - it’s much shorter than the other two, which have a large collection of decent tracks without hits. Raekwon’s “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” is solid, but lacks the charm found on “Tical.” Ghostface Killah’s “Fishscale” is from later in his career - it's still filled with Wu-Tang cameos, but isn’t produced by RZA. I’m curious how it might compare to his solo debut, “Ironman” (which was RZA-produced). Ultimately, it doesn’t do it for me as much as the earlier Wu-Tang offerings. I do love how self-referential all the Wu-Tang members’ solo work is, though. RZA’s shaolin fixation still pops up, Method Man’s Tical concept (“taking into consideration all lives”) keeps popping up, Ghostface drops Iron Man references, and more - it’s all over, and it helps make it all feel very cohesive.

At least the samples he uses are from good songs.

I looooove the sound of Whip You With A Strap’s main hook. Getting whipped does not sound great. I imagine that people with that sort of fetish (not that there’s anything wrong with that…you do you) feel something as sumptuous as this lady singing, “Take me across her lap, she used whip me with a strap,” when the impact happens. Most of the music and samples are fine enough, but I’m at the point in my life where overt misogyny is a turnoff.

Incredibly well produced, with creative, bright (often dreamy) samples. Loud and proud, each song has its own style. Has a lot going on, especially small studio effects like the sniffing or the horn injections in "Kilo," or the cheering in "The Champ," which paint a large colorful scene in every song. Ghostface Killah himself gives an enthusiastic performance and works well with the samples and vibes he's dealing with, and the guest performers aren't half-ass either. At an hour long and 18 songs, it drags on too much, but due to the richness and speed of the tracks and the skits, a lot of it passes by. Favorites: Shakey Dog, Kilo, The Champ, RAGU, Back Like That, Dogs of War, Big Girl, Underwater

When I was in college I remember hearing NWA and thinking they were great. This led me looking into Wu Tang Clan too, but they didn’t click for me at the time. Since then, I can honestly say I never looked into them again, and likewise never thought to look into the solo pursuits from the members. Hip-hop is generally a genre that I rarely listen to, so I’m interested to hear something new. Songs I already knew: none Favourite after listening: The Champ, 9 Milli Bros Damn, this was so much better than I expected! It hits hard, has lots of violent lyrics and he clearly knows his way around… substances. Aside from the lyrics, the beats were so tight, and I think I hear some influence from the older funk rap at times (Grandmaster Flash, etc.). I think I’d need to be in a certain mood to seek out this album again, but I’m definitely impressed and enjoyed it a lot.

this album was fine. even good. sounds a bit outdated but there was some good stuff in there. it's just... surely there are better rap albums that could have been selected over this.

Favourite track(s): Dogs of War; Three Bricks Don't know why you would start an album with incoherent babble for one minute. Maybe that was just for the Expanded Edition. Also, I dont like skits on albums unless they are absolutely iconic, which in this case they are not. Some big names on the album but I had never heard of Ghostface before. Even though it is his album, he does remain quite flat in comparison to B.I.G. or Ne-Yo. Doesn't help that the album is just too long. While that seems like a lot of negative thoughts, the album was actually fairly listenable. It just did not spark all that much emotion.

Ok, sure, I can get on board with this. Usually not too into the whole crime braggadocio thing, but this is more like straight up storytelling - very noir! Fave track - "9 Milli Bros" maybe? Or "R.A.G.U."? Probably need to give it more listens to select one...

Fuck Yes. Amazing production (Pete Rock, Dilla and DOOM? Come on, you can’t go wrong), amazing flow, great guest spots, high energy. Like it’s namesake, Fishscale hits hard.

Perhaps the craziest thing about Wu-Tang was the number of incredible rappers and producers who were part of the crew from it's outset. Ghostface is a great example of that. He's one of the greatest rappers of all time, and yet when you list of the members of Wu-Tang who were most important to rap history, Ghostface barely sneaks into the top 5 (I'd put Rza, Method Man, ODB, and perhaps Gza in over him). Despite that, Ghostface clearly shows how well his style ages here. More than 10 years after 36 chambers, Ghostface comes in hot with Fishscale. It helps a lot that this album features some of the greatest producers of all time at the height of their careers. One of the coolest things about this album is getting to hear some of my favorite songs off of Donuts by J Dilla employed by a rapper whose style meshes well with Dilla's. I can't think of another rapper who can tell a story in verse the way that Ghostface can. His flow is incredible, but the way that he paints a picture while he does it is his true skill. I can't believe that I'm going to give another Wu-Tang rapper a 5/5 album, but here we are. This album is undeniable 5/5

Good album but hardly "necessary."

I appreciate Mr. Killah's enthusiasm for explaining the metric system on "Kilo" and his Iron Man references before they were cool.

LOVE me some Wu-Tang, and Ghostface might just be my favorite member. In a group with no lack of hip-hop titans, Ghostface still manages to grab the spotlight and throttle it like it stole something from him. The man's a poet, plain and simple. "Supreme Clientele" gets a lot of attention (and rightfully so--it doesn't get much better than "Apollo Kids" and "Cher Chez La Ghost"), but "Fishscale" is my favorite Ghostface album. The skits are utterly skippable (ranging from the mildly amusing "Bad Mouth Kid" to the cringey "Heart Street Directions"), but basically every track is worthy of a place in my regular playlist rotation. And it's no wonder. Not only is he a master storyteller, but his fellow Clan members back him up regularly on this album (most notably on "9 Milli Bros."), and the tracks are produced by hip-hop greats like Pete Rock, J Dilla, and MF DOOM. I could list my favorite tracks, but it'd basically just be two-thirds of the track list, minus the skits. That's how solid this album is. Casual hip-hop fans might find this album a little inaccessible, but for those who appreciate the Wu-Tang style "Fishcale" is solid gold.

This genre is my Achilles' heel, but I'm glad I listened. I enjoyed the story telling, vignettes & the weaving of other musical genres into the songs. My major criticism is the overt use of curse words & sexually explicit content - that has been the main reason I'm generally turned off by this genre (it's lazy, in my opinion). But the album was solid & ended up listening to more of his music. 3.5 stars.

Listened Before? N Man, I really liked this as far as modern-ish rap albums go. He's got a unique style. That being said, some of the collabs and especially the extended cuts on Amazon are really bad. Just a keyboard sample with unorganized rapping over it. The few skits that were on this were a bit distracting. I have stated before that skits do take away from the re-listenability of the entire album. Tracks produced by MF DOOM I can pick out pretty easily now, which is weird, because it wasn't that long ago I didn't know who he was. But now he's really on my radar. It's sad he's no longer with us, as he seemed to be a really highly regarded force in hip-hop, but not known outside that circle. Ghostface Killah really draws you in. The beat was great. It's interesting that all the members of Wu-Tang guest-starred. That the group were willing to do solo albums and help each other out like that is great. It's not an album I would come back to often, only because of the language and violence. But the lyrics are real and I totally get where he is coming from. I did enjoy this a lot. If this came on, I wouldn't turn it off.

Damn. Great album. The first time I listened I didn't even pay attention to the lyrics, just the music - which was awesome. Great beats. But it's a concept album so I had to listen again to see what I thought about the themes throughout. He's so smooth you really have to pay attention or you'll miss the wordplay in his lyrics. Best tracks - I mean, absolutely loved them - were Shakey Dog (so smooth), Kilo (great beats and female vocals), Be Easy (inclusion of Ice Cube is awesome), and Dogs of War (intense beats and rapping). The skits were okay and some songs weren't as good as the rest, but still a great listen overall.

Another new album for me. Some great grooves on here. “Be Easy” is easily my favorite on here, no pun intended. The skits were funny too but not as funny as the vocal melody in “Jellyfish.” The second half of the album hit me more than the first half and that’s a good sign. On a bad album I’m usually waiting for it to be over at that point especially when the album clocks in at over an hour but I’m grooving the whole way through this one.

I can't really judge this album - as i don't know hiphop that much. I know Dr Dre, Eminem, various other more well known artists, but nothing about Ghostface Killah. What I got was that it was average production, some OK rapping, but nothing amazing, and fairly basic loops. it's OK

I liked it, but probably more appreciated by the Wu-Tang aficionados. I can see why Action Bronson almost got beatdown for sounding like and talking smack about Ghostface Killah.

28th June 2022 Listened while in the office. Went to see Jack white in the evening with sav and Nathan. Liked this but not as much as other rap albums I’ve been given so far on here. Whilst a wu tang legend, I wasn’t sold on the whole tony stark skits.

As with my previous reviews of Wu-Tang Clan and Raekwon, these types of rap albums really struggle to hold my attention. According to spotify there are 27 tracks on this expanded album, and I just haven't the patience to work through all of them. So I am bailing after two tracks. I'm just not into this

Some ok tracks and didn't hate it but overall a bit generic and didn't love it. So 2.5 stars? Afraid it'll round down to a 2.

I like the production

I didn't expect to like this album so much. I was expecting some old-style hip-hop or maybe some kinda 90's-ish melodies that I like but it's not the best thing that we have from this style. However, I found a strong record of what I consider modern hip-hop, even with some proto-trap if I exaggerate a bit. The lyrics are not the best of what I like, but I git the album idea. The greatest problem for me is the length, it's too long, but it's still great.

Brilliant album, tells a story but with songs that stand alone as well. Some of the skits were arguably unnecessary, but they give the songs room to breathe. Production of all wu-tang (and wu-tang solo) albums is always spot on.

Massive energy. The backing is so full of hooks and great grooves, could listen to it spinning all day long. Lyrics are fast and furious with passion and feeling. Loved this album

Know thyself. I'm 34 years old, white, from the suburbs. I can't relate to a life of drugs and crime. I don't want to live a life of drugs and crime vicariously through Ghostface either. I just don't really give that much of a shit about hip-hop. I can appreciate that it's got catchy hooks and great production, but ultimately Myself knows this is a respectful no thank you, Mr. Killah.

Dude was 15 years late to the party without a fresh idea. I bought a hip-hop t-shirt yesterday. It was not this.. We haven't had any Carpenters, Zappa, Farnham, Fu Manchu, Thelonious Monk, Queen, Something for Kate, Russian Circles, Tori, Bjork, Beastie Boys, RHCP, Ben Harper, Doors, Avalanches, America, Hendrix, RATM, Skrillex, Low, Sunn, Soundgarden, Leadbelly, Cat Stevens, Kiss, Pink Floyd, Metallica, A Tribe Called Quest, 10000 Maniacs, Lauren Hill...,. But this - m Kay.

While I don't enjoy it, I do acknowledge it is an coherent album, with fitting concepts and relevent skits. Also the production is very good. I don't mind hip hop but this couldn't stick in my brain.

Decent hip-hop record, I like The Champ the most with the horn arrangements. Otherwise, it doesn't strike me that much - a lot of songs about vengeance and pussy which doesn't interest me that much - still the general sound of beats and his vocals are much preferable to e.g. Cypress Hill. You get small wiffs of WuTang Clan but it is more straight.

I really didn't expect much from this album. Maybe that's why I found myself enjoying it. Sure, the skits are super lame and a lot of the content is dated but it turns out that Ghostface Killa is a damn good writer. The delivery is on-point and these tracks are just so tasty. Color me surprised.

Hip hip. Coñazo machacón y repetitivo.

I wasn't expecting much from a Wu-tang member about a decade from the group's peak to release something this great. It's cinematic, perfectly produced, the beats and flows are on point. This might just be one of the best albums of the early 2000's.

Loud, noisy, black, and gangsta. I don't care too much about the lyrics, I feel like I'm too disconnected from that black anger and black power that is reflected in the lyrics, so I judge this purely on how much I enjoy the noise that comes out of my speaker. I have to say, the first two songs are the best, Shakey Dog and Kilo. Crack Spot being number three, and then maybe R.A.G.U...perhaps I just have a soft spot for rap with female voices.

4.1 + I remember liking lots of the joints off this record back in 2006, especially "Kilo." Sadly, it quickly fell off my radar and I think the skits are to blame. With the exception of "Barbershop" that turns into a fire track, the skits add so much bloat to an otherwise amazing record. At the outset, it's intimidating to look at these 24 track that clock in at over an hour. Overlooking all that, all the actual songs on here are bangers. First, I love Ghostface's writing, his ecstatic storytelling on "Shakey Dog" and the way he adds strange details to his descriptions on "Big Girl." Second, there are recognizable samples to create some insane beats. Third, the collabs: Raekwon, Wu-Tang, BIG, etc.

I love the song Kilo, I might use that in some Maths lessons in the future. Back like that is a bangerrr. There's a lot of variation and interest in this album. I like it! Enjoying the samples on some of these tracks and great rhymes, every track is distinct. We all know by now, I love skits! I wish I had discovered this album earlier in life and I prefer a few more melodical moments than this album provides so it isn't my perfect hip hop album but it's certainly a 4.

I was not really looking forward to this album but it really surprised me! Great beats, the rapping was really clear so you I could understand what he was saying. And that's the most grandpa thing I've ever said.

This album was removed from my version. Another example of a newer album added and then tossed out instead of pruning the moldy old sacred cows. I don't love this album. I'm a Wu-Tang fan, but I take the unpopular opinion that Ghostface albums aren't that great. He is an undisputed master of storytelling, but I don't find his albums compelling as someone listening to a piece of music. Fishscale is a concept album about coke dealing, so more than most even, it's a thick narrative with the songs themselves de-emphasized. On top of that, it is 24 tracks with far too many skits. As an adult in their 30s, I want my hip-hop albums to be about 14 tracks with zero skits. I'm a firm believer that each genre has its own optimal album length - it's not a hard rule, but on average, I want my punk albums about 25-30 minutes, my hip-hop albums to be about 45-50 minutes, my rock albums to be about 50-60 minutes, and my drone albums to be about 100 minutes. At 65 minutes with 7 skits, this album drags. Still, it's not terrible. There are plenty of forgettable Moby Grape and Love albums on this list that deserve to be on it way less.

Another random hip hop record in the 1001 list. It is almost a joke, thinking about all masterpieces left out of the list to make some room for boring random releases like this one. An exWu Tang Klan member trying to vindicate himself. That's ok, even a few good tracks like 'Whip You With a Strap' and hilarious skits like 'Bad Mouth Kid'... but come on...

Wu. Wu peed on your rug.

I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did considering other Wu Tang projects I've heard, but man, Ghosty just has a way with words that can drag me in to a story. The narrative-based rapping is definitely the strongest draw here, with a strong second going to the excellent production (I mean, come on, DOOM and Dilla? Spoiled!). There are too many skits IMO, and not every song is a banger, but this was definitely a good project.

Man Ghostface, you got bars. It sucks that your delivery is so grating to me. The production here is top notch as well, with some excellent features throughout.

Rap is growing on me. The gangster violence and threats, misogyny, drugs, potty-mouths and tales of impoverished "life is harsh" must be becoming normalised for me as I didn't mind this LP of drug lord iron man peddling "fishscale". It helped that the samples and bscking music was familiar, soulful in and funky and not too abrasive. The rapping was rhythmic and clear. I might even look forward to more Wu Tang related material...

I do love the music. The "skits" are totally grade-10 juvenile stuff but still provide some interest - to a point - in making this feel like an album rather than a collection of songs. His voice/vocal style and lyrics are tough, though. Real tough. There's this urgent-sameness to his vocals that I do not love at all on the most uptempo songs. And as much as I try to - and mostly do - ignore lyrics, they're just .... ehh. Way too much gangster for me and at some point it's like...come on. Rating wise i'd have given this a 4 for the music/production but the vocals/lyrics completely submarine it as a fun listening experience for me - after the first handful of cuts I was ok with it but holyhell by the end I was desperate for this to be over. 3/10 2 stars

I've never heard an album by Ghostface or any of the Wu-Tang clan, so had to have a couple of listens before elements started clicking and coming together. At first it didn't move me at all, but second time round Ghostface's lyrical talents came into focus and I started to pick up on some solid storytelling (see the opening proper, "Shakey Dog"). I definitely appreciated it more by reading the lyrics alongside it- the more I immersed myself, the more I understood why it was praised as a cinematic album. Although the narrative tracks stand out, the repeated braggadocios between Ghostface and often other Wu-Tang members ("9 Milli Bros", "Be Easy", "Clipse of Doom") do nothing for me. "The Champ" is the strongest of these and would have done the running time a lot of favours by standing on its own. As for the skits, I didn't find them too distracting by the end, but there seemed to be quite an overreliance on them at the start which disrupted the momentum. The second half had some hidden gems, from the surreal narrative of "Underwater" to some lovely lush soul samples ("Jellyfish", "Big Girl", "Whip Me With a Strap"... though these did just make me realise I'd rather be listening to soul music). I was torn between whether using a whole Stylistics track in "Big Girl" was an ingenious move or just lazy sampling. Either way, it made for one of my favourites. Finally, props to Ghostface for showing a more positive, nuanced representation of women in tracks like "Jellyfish", "Big Girl", and "Momma" than I've heard in other rap. I'm giving this one two stars for now. Even though there was a lot I liked on second and third listens, I had to really make an effort. It's just not my usual style, and when listening without the lyrics it began to feel really long and dragged quite a lot for me.

As someone without a lot of experience with hiphop, but no particular disdain for it, I liked this album. It's an actual album. Each song is distinct, it's not a mushy bleed-together of left-overs to pad the length. But the production is consistent and each song obviously belongs on this album. Each track has interesting things that separate them from the rest, and the production is really top notch. Production is so good it probably makes it swing above its weight class. There's nothing irritating on the album, it's all consistently good. Solid album I probably wouldn't choose to listen to again, but if it came on I wouldn't be compelled to turn off either.

Good stuff. The guy is an incredible lyricist, but I felt like I had to pay too much attention.

It's alright. I mean, I do like it. It has a lot of charm, with its pretty fast and short skits along with the array of producers (Pete Rock, MF DOOM, J Dilla, etc.) I do think straying away from RZA Production does kind of hinder it but I still think its a unique album. Its pretty long, tackling an hour with 23 tracks. A few of them are skits, but still. It's a lot of tracks! Raekwon, Trife, & Cappadonna are some of the recurring features but its not limited to them. I do like the J Dilla cuts on here. Using "Hi." And "One For Ghost" on Donuts, I really think GFK uses these beats very well. The production on songs like Jellyfish, Underwater, The Champ, all great. A high quality rap album with great rhymes and beats. The album flows through from beginning to end and it's hard not to bop your head to the beat. I thought I wouldn't like it from the first song/skit, but it drew me in and I enjoyed it until the end.

Strangely, despite loving Bulletproof wallets when I was a teenager, I hadn't listened to this much before. That has changed now, I've listened to it 4 times today! Super album, I love Ghostface's voice and delivery, and there's some really great tracks on here.

Ghostface Killah is peerless on this album of grimy storytelling and verbal dexterity. His taste is impeccable,with beats from underground heroes J Dilla (RIP) and MF Doom (RIP), old school innovator Pete Rock and chart topper Just Blaze. The samples are sublime - the old soul tracks gives the album a cohesion often lacking in other rappers’ efforts. If Ghostface isn’t the GOAT then he damn near gets close to claiming the crown with this record.

Jesus this album was dope. I haven't really listened to any rap album before, and initially I wasn't that into it, but I gave myself some time and went for a promenade in the rain with this album and and felt it very much. Every now and then I wasn't that into a song, but overall it was tremendous. It definitely feels like a complete work and the songs work together. Amazing.

Man, I listened the hell out of this back in 2006. Kilo has a great, great hook and I didn't remember anything else about the rest of the album. But I think pretty much every song on this is a gem.

Unremarkable for the most part. "Kilo" is kind of good. N-word is used a lot throughout the album.

This one surprised me a bit. I expected it to be 0-star level atrocious. Instead it was actually very decent and I even really enjoyed a couple of tracks. I absolutely hated the "skits" and interludes. Luckily there were less of those as the album went on. And admittedly I didn't read up on the lyrics and didn't pay attention to them. But from the scraps I consciously heard here and there I suspect I might possible have rounded the album down to a 2 if I actually read them... But instead I'm rounding up because it changed some of my preconceptions and that's a good thing.

This was actually great. Very funky / soulful. Not very Wu-Tang. Didn't catch many lyrics on first listen, but lots of effing and jeffing. Terrible skits though.

I approached this album filled with dread. I haven't had much luck with the hip-hop albums on this list. I'm still waiting for a great hip-hop record. This isn't it, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. The first cut isn't encouraging. It's a skit, but the voice is so distorted, you can't even make out what the person is saying. It gets better from there. Now, it's true that the subject matter is mostly the same old, same old. But at least the imagery is inventive and vivid and the gangsta vibe is heavy. Not my thing really, but if you're gonna do it, you might as well go for it. The samples and loops are well-chosen and varied. Best of all, the beats are bangin'. The loops and the raps intersect in ways that propel the music forward like a rocket. Now, I wish the music was a bit more complex and it would have been more interesting if the tunes were punctuated with live instrumental breaks, like Cameo did in the 80s with the likes of saxophonist Michael Brecker, or even some decent scratching, but Ghostface Killah wisely keeps the tunes short, so you don't have time to get bored. He also intersperses the tunes with "comic" interludes, which also helps. YMMV. I'm conflicted on how to rate this. On the one hand, Fishscale is damned near perfectly realized. This is EXACTLY what Ghostface Killah was going for. On the other hand, I despair of the lack of ambition and Ghostface's narrow vision, both musically and lyrically, given his obvious talent. Update: Ghostface also skillfully integrates modern R&B vocals into the mix later on in the album, which is a plus, and there's a bit more variety to the subject matter than I first thought. I added half a point.

5/10. He immediately tells us to fasten our seatbelts, which I appreciate because I am tired of listening to rap albums that don't care about the listener's personal safety. Also listening to this for the first time after the MCU made Tony Stark a household name, but knowing that this is older than that made the constant references to Tony Starks and Ironman a bit surprising. I liked that the skits transitioned very smoothly into the following songs in this album. I kinda liked Back Like That, I suppose because it just sounds like a pop song. I also like how when he boasts about women, these women are often intelligent in addition to having great asses etc, which is pretty fun.

Every rap album on here seems to be by a member of the Wu Tang Clan and takes about a day to listen to. This one, though, is the best. Great use of smoky soul samples, skits that actually add to the proceedings, and a genuinely brilliant couple of tracks in The Champ and Back Like That. Gonna use The Champ to get myself psyched into a killer mentality before playing badminton with my work colleagues

Listening again today; great production and incredibly cinematic album. Def up there with my fav hip hop albums of all time. “RAGU” and “Back Like That (feat. Ne-Yo)” have got to be some of my fav tracks of all time.

Wasn't familiar with this (so much wu tang catalogue), but loved it.

Mucho flow, más de lo que puedo procesar... por ahí caché letras bastante buenas, creo que el disco suena bien en conjunto y las colaboraciones son muy chidas. Especialmente me gustaron "The Champ", "Three Bricks" y el remix (con la familiar voz de Kanye) de "Back Like That". 8/10

I've not listened to Wu-Tang / Ghostface Killah before, and I'm surprised at how much this album reminds me, in structure, to Tenacious D -- I know it's really probably influenced the other way, but the skits and the over-the-top lewdness. Kinda fascinating. Highlights: "Kilo", "Whip You With a Strap" and "Back Like That"

I like the semi Lo-Fi vibes. Killas flow def wears me down, hes only got one sound and speed. Top 3 songs Shakey Boy, Three Bricks, and the irreverent Kilo 3 out of 5

skip the skits, they dont add anything and are too disjoint to make this any attempt at a concept album. "9milli bros" is the hype-anthem and would have been a strong album opener. "the champ" is worth a listen. "Be easy" is also another stand out, but becomes repetitive with the forced syncopation.

This is a great album from start to finish. Ghostface is always great, and this is hands-down his best album.

Loved this album, great assorted group of producers and Killah's rhymes are something else. Also, I learned how to cut a brick of cocaine, so it was also instructional.

Never actually heard him out of Wu Tang, pretty cool

shrug. Not my thing, but I guess it's supposed to be good.

I haven't listened to this since college, probably 15 years ago. I used to like the Wu-Tang extended universe a lot more back then. Now I don't enjoy the agro shout-rapping as much, in addition to content aging poorly.
