Done. Fun
Really liked this. What a happy guy!
At a minimum, albums should be at least this fun. What a blast. The lyrics and the performances are just delightful. That’s the perfect word to describe this album. A delight. Super fun oldie shtuff.
I was thinking that this album would work perfectly in Fallout and turns out it is already. The band and backing vocals work so well together. Sends you back to the 50s instantly
This is so fun and happy and joyful. A bunch of great musicians and singers and they sound like they are having a blast. It’s infectious. I prefer the songs to the instrumentals . A mood-lifter. Love it
Strong album, multiple hits, bit of variety. Favorites are Buona Sera, Oh, Marie, Five Months, You Rascal, and the instrumentals Night Train and Body and Soul. He also has a version of Jump, Jive, and Wail
🔥
Fun little album from way back. Reminded me of visiting my wife's Italian parents house where they had this type of music playing all the time.
Its ok. If you like jazz it's pretty good
The cover sets the tone - it’s just so joyous.
Had fun. Funny vocals, great musicianship.
Fallout type beat
Made me happy
4/5 Sparkling and fun. Great cooking music.
I think the album opened up with a great couple tracks and it’s an overall good time.
I’ve heard Louis prima a lot in my life but this if the first time hearing his album.
This was really good. Kinda crazy that something from 1956 can still sound so fresh while at the same time totally of it's time. I think a lot of that has to do with the 90s swing revival but that is heard at least two or three of these songs over 60 years later and they still sound catchy and fun and exuberant is quite the feat!
There’s everything to like about this very fun, funny and beautifully uncomplicated album. The definition of ‘crowd-pleasing’. Bonus: this album provided the perfect party music for my 3 year old to celebrate her birthday with this weekend. Favorite song: ‘(I’ll be glad when you’re dead) you rascal you’
Now that’s what I’m talking about
A very pleasant surprise! Sassy, lively and full of rhythm. Kinda makes you wanna travel back in time.
This album is too fun not to enjoy. Sure it’s shallow and the lyrics can be one note but there is just so much great energy.
Such an enjoyable listen. A swinging good time.
Good
He's so fun.
To be honest, the only Louis Prima I had listened to before this was the Jungle Book soundtrack, but I really enjoyed this. Some great music and an awesome voice.
This was really fun! Jazzy rock and rolly weirdness. I liked it.
Fun and upbeat album and sound. Was surprised at how many of these songs I was already familiar with.
It may surprise some to learn that there was infectious, upbeat popular music before the rise of rock & roll. Louis Prima is an ambassador for New Orleans' role in that movement. All the pieces are here and I think listeners should pay special attention to the rhythms employed throughout the album -- there's no clapping on the one, here. Anyway, this is a short one. Prima is great -- and often very funny, if you can soften some of your modern sensitivities. Give him a go. 4/5
This album is just perfect nostalgia and will now be one of my go tos when I need to liven things up.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Favourite track - Jump, Jive, An' Wail.
Este tipo de música me parece toda igual, lo que me lleva a querer escuchar más y en mayor profundidad para poder diferenciar y dejar de sentirme una tonta. Divertidísima siempre, eso sí... amo esas pequeñas trompetas.
Great for when you have chores to do at home
I found this album really funny and very enjoyable. It's really good, actually, and it's got a great background. So, I wouldn't say I've found it a masterpiece but it's great to hear albums like this one.
Pretty good double feature to Amy Whinehouse you got rocknroll soul at it's.....WILDEST!!!! uh...3.9-4.0
Not much to dislike about this one.
Great songs but a lot were by Louis Armstrong originally
Good music to romanticize life in NYC.
3.6/was fun
This made me happy in the morning
Quintessential dinner party music, nothing that made me really want to skip, wonderful time
First Listen; 3.5; This album was fun, not sure what else to say about it. Kinda hard for me to put it in context. Favorite songs: (I'll be glad when you're dead) You Rascal
Wait a second- David Lee Roth quit Van Halen so he could do note for note covers of THIS guy? Hell yeah. Respect. This is great fun. And Keely Smith’s voice is wonderful. Joyful. Exciting. I love it. FOUR STARS
I had a wail'n time listing to this swingin' banger!
Not necessarily the style of music that I like, but I found this to be fun to listen to!
Great musically and very fun!
Pretty enjoyable swing. Again not my genre, have a hard time seeing myself putting this on on a Thursday night. But out of the pre-60s Albums I've had here it's the best so far.
Sugary sweet, like eating a banana split.
Old and goodie
Quite enjoyed this but will probably not listen to it again. Were there lots of the band leaders around or just a few?
A fun bop! I like listening to older music. I added a few songs of his to my library
Great jazz album, makes me want to play Fallout and listen to the radio. Fave track: Just a gigolo/I ain't got nobody
Good stuff. I would buy this album.
The Italian Louis Armstrong. Humorous, gravelly voice, more than capable musician.
No. 15 Love it, makes me want to dance, and I bet you this would've been super fun to see live.
Very very fun album. This really is something that doesn’t exist anymore as far as I know. I can’t think of any artist today who would sing a silly song about banana splits. Also, I have gone my entire life thinking King Louie in The Jungle Book was supposed to be Louis Armstrong. Imagine my relief to discover it was actually Louis Prima.
Man the infectious energy pops on the very first note and doesn’t let up throughout. It’s impossible to listen to this without wanting to dance and sing yourself. So wonderful.
The jungle book guy! I don’t really have a lot to say, it was a fun listen, great jazz instrumentals and some goofiness as well with the gibberish lyrics. The back and forth between the vocals was a nice concept as well and they were both great and the backing vocals. It also feels like it has held up very well given this is one of the earliest releases fir this album generator. Favourites: just a gigolo and Body and soul. Overall, 7/10.
What’s not to like. Great voice, great trumpeter and brilliant band/ arrangements. Lots of fun.
Fantastic record. I'll be going back to this one. Shooby-dooby!

Straight 50s fun before rock'n'roll changed it all
Enjoyable listen. Some pretty inoffensive jazz.
Truly enjoyable.
banger time
Very good jazz album from the 50s. Incorporated very basic and also very advanced jazz techniques.
40 minute extended audio-only cut of the Elf scene where he's exploring New York City If I made a song with the same lyrics as Banana Split for My Baby my wife would divorce me Very fun listen, infectious energy, a big "time and place" kind of album for me but I will listen in the future again
What a fun album - and had never heard these versions of Just a gigolo or jump jobs and wail before... these were even better then the versions I knew!
it's alright. some tracks are really good, like banana split for my baby, oh marie and night train. the sense of humor is really funny, but some tracks are just okay. and a few are yikesy, unfortunately, especially the closing one. not a big cup of tea of mine but it can be enjoyable. 6.5/10 favourite tracks: oh marie, banana split for my baby
classic swing is not normally in my music rotation but this was great! great mix of joyous vocals but admittedly silly lyrics. fav track: (ill be glad when your dead) you rascal you
God damn do I love the saxophone. As my mother said, "fun"! I wish I could experience this era for a short stint.
just a gigolo; the lip
Really enjoyed this as a curiosity. Swinging!
Very fun jazz album with some fantastic hepcat swingers like "Just a Gigolo" and "Jump Jive an Wail" that were later covered by David Lee Roth and Brian Setzer Orchestra, respectively. I love this kind of jazz and Prima was a primo talent.
I love New Orleans style jazz. There's such a vibrancy here, every song is just fun and joyful and its a pleasure to listen to, even if most songs follow the same formula.
A wonderful album from the good old era of music. Simple, melodious and oh so easy to listen to.
A Swing / Jump-Blues album that's even older than me. It opens with a medley of "Just a Gigolo" and "I Ain't Got Nobody", and also includes the instrumentals "Body and Soul" and "Night Train"; I loved the last track "(I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You". I liked the album.
I generally am not a fan of vocal jazz, but whoa - am so impressed with this one. Really great listen on a Friday afternoon!
This was really fun and definitely wild. The female vocals were brilliant and without them this album would probably get irritating.
This was surprisingly enjoyable. I knew the name but not what it was attached to. Knew some of these tunes.
Like Charlie Parker telling you a dirty joke.
Quite a fun album. Love this guy's vocal characteristics. I can see why he was chosen to be a voice actor. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Quite entertaining. I tapped my toes and even lol'd. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): The Lip; Jump, Jive, An' Wail; Buona Sera; (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You; Whistle Stop ⭐⭐⭐⭐: Really liked it. Saved a bunch of tracks.
Fun album, lots of scatting though.
Christmas shopping and Italian restaurants. Nothing I'd actively choose, but enjoyable background tunes for a change of pace and mood setting.
I wish my grandmother was still alive so I could ask her about this.
Fun stuff. Who knew one album would provide David Lee Roth and Brian Setzer with their biggest solo hits decades later. Gave me a reason to ponder the late 90s swing era, what was that all about? But it seems we're do for another one in the next decade?
One would be hard pressed to listen to The Wildest! and be grumpy about it. It is a lively, playful album with some good jazz. They’re having fun, we’re having fun. 4 stars
The band is jamming and Louis brings the energy and humor. It just sounds like a party. Favorites were Just A Gigolo, The Lip, and Jump Jive An’ Wail.
Celest x Versekeys Ultra-Sense Planet.
oh i had fun listening to this one...there's such a joie de vivre in this that i can't help but wonder if maybe our grandparents were right and we do be on them phones too much because i've never been to a party as fun as whatever is going on here
i loved this!!!!! but i love oldies like this! i always had this fantasy of going to an old jazz club, sipping brandy in the winter all melancholic and angsty for the holidays listening to someone play their trumpet~ one day~ the lyrics are so silly on some of these LMAO anyway i stan and wanna swing
Surprisingly good. 4/5. Would not save for a playlist though. Okay. Listening further and I am following Louis Prima on Spotify. I didn’t expect to like this so much. Still 4/5. But it wasn’t gimmicky at all like the opening song. Fun, stylish, rhythmic.
Was this a masterpiece? No, not quite, but it is incredibly fun. It's even more impressive that it was captured live. I really kind of hate live releases on this site, but this one felt like an actual album with a live show feel. Loved it!

Lots of fun. I might look to pick this up if there are cheap copies
This was a fun listen! I’ve heard some of the standards on here but overall this was a first for me. The band sounds incredible and the vocal performances were vibrant and expressive! 4.5
It's cool this guy covered David Lee Roth... Man, this is a banger for the 50's! I'm not sure if these were originals or covers, but I think several of these have been covered. This was a fun album, worthy of a 4.
Surprisingly varied, always upbeat and pleasant to listen to.
Louis Prima, where have you been in my life up to this point? How come I never found you while surfing through fifties classics. Truly undeserved. There's humor, there's musicianship, there's rock 'n roll, there's jazz, there's blues. Sure the entire tracklist might not be the strongest compilation, but what a joy to listen to. Definitely checking more of his stuff out.
Fun and easy to listen to.
I feel like I just walked into an Olive Garden. AND I CAN EAT A LOT OF BREADSTICKS, BOY!
The Wildest! is a definite dinner party album. The jazz is quite smooth and some tunes are most infectious. I also appreciated hearing the original version of "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody," which I first heard as a minor David Lee Roth hit in the mid-80s.
Had a lot of fun with this, what a performer! I will say that the lip got on my nerves very quickly, but outside of that it's pretty much only kans
Bring back swing music! While it won´t be my favorite genre in music, the world can definitely use more swing. This album is a great example of the power of swing, getting me moving in my seat throughout. The hit ´Buona Sera´ was familiar, but the rest I did not know. 4/5
Tasty rhythms, but a bit repetitive
Good 50s album. Good energy across the whole thing, nothing really bringing it down at all.
Solid jazz album. Can't go wrong with the guy who voiced Louie from the Jungle Book. Favorite tracks: Body and Soul, Buona Sera
Now this is some proper Fallout-core. Probably the single most Fallout-core album I've gotten so far. Anyways, great, fun little jazz rock album. I listened to the expanded edition, and honestly the added songs weren't as strong as the original tracklist, but it was still fun. (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal goes hard, especially as a closer.
Весело задорно, малацы внатуре
Wow! What a fun listen this was. I’m familiar with some of Louis Prima’s work (Buena Sera, Jump Jive and Wail) but I was just loving the energy on this record. I can’t believe I’ve never heard (I’ll be Glad When You’re Dead) such a great track. All around a wonderful listen 8/10
This was great I really enjoyed the lead off song and it was a fun ride
Not a perfect album but always near and dear to my heart. I'm way to young for this stuff but I always loved the cheesey earnest delivery and the fact that, unlike Sinatra or Crosby, Prima always seemed joyful.
Louis Prima's charisma is undeniable. This was fantastic, even if almost every other song on this album sounded like the beginning of "Just a Gigolo." It's incredibly difficult to have a sour disposition while listing to this. It's fun and a little bit rowdy, but not rowdy enough to get kicked out of the party.
Perceived rating. Will listen when able
Rock and roll at its jazziest, bringing the swing and blues together in a great performance with a wild attitude
Me siento mafioso de new york
This one is just fun. Can't beat being sung to by King Louie.
What a hoot
Definitely not something I’d normally listen to, but I really enjoyed it. Oh, Marie was a standout. Great energy
Holds up very well and is probably the music of that era that holds up the best. When Nick Vianco DJ's my wedding, he's going to play songs from this album.
This is the kind of real dago shit the side of my father's family that ended up on Long Island like to play at family gatherings. My father has told me that this is the kind of stuff his parents/aunts/uncles/etc would listen to when he was growing up. When I was younger I always found it cringey because I associated it with this ridiculous self parody of Italian Americans, which I still do, but I've given up hating on that whole subculture and just kind of live with it now. Fundamentally (heh) this is fun music, it's (mostly) wholesome songs about having a good time or goofing around and the voices and instruments match the vibe. Keely Smith's smooth voice perfectly balances Louis Prima's gravely wail, and the band behind them are great for the style. This was the party music of the day, and it's still fun to listen to. The energy stays high throughout the album and I like that there are enough vocal breaks to keep things interesting. Whoever "arranged" the album did a good job with it. Overall this was an easy listen, and I never felt like I needed to skip something.
This guy's so good he covered the Brian Setzer Orchestra and made it listenable.
Good ol’ Diamond Lou Prima. His music always makes me think of the movie Big Night. Fun overall. Not an album for every mood, but a great album for a particular mood. This album contains the universal sentiment of “all my meatballs, you try to steal”.
Fun stuff, I remember digging Louis Prima back when swing music made a weird comeback. Still holds up.
This was a lot of fun. A great listen. Louis Prima was quite obviously a top notch performer.
Exuberant and wild. Great example of the transition from jump blues to rock and roll.
Wild is the right word. This album is not just fun, it’s actually quite surprising and strange in parts. These songs are mostly catchy, fun and good natured. On the few occasions they are not good natured (such as the amazingly titled: ‘(I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You’) they are totally unhinged and excitingly unsettling - even if it's all performed with a bit of a wink. The lyrics are frequently bizarre, performances are crazy, but never off putting. This elevates it well beyond being "just some swing record." Its a subversion of the form. It would be impossible to make traditional swing led pop music like this today without it being an annoying 1950s pastiche. But in its original context it works beautifully.
This is a great album! The band is tight, the horns are giving it their all, and the vocals from Louis and Keely are fantastic. I always enjoy this style of jazz when it's well done. The New Orleans jazz tracks are a standout on this album. I really enjoyed this instrumental version of Body and Soul and the little snippet of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" at the end. The horns killed it on that track and on Night Train. A really solid album overall. 8.5/10.
Some classic swing tunes on here.
Was that "In the Hall of the Mountain King" I heard in Body and Soul?!?! Very cool album, never heard of this guy before but I loved the vibe
Dude has such a powerful voice. This was an awesome album
Really fun album, some great humor, musicality and talent involved in this one. Was picturing watching it live while listening and thinking how awesome that would have been. Nothing really quite like it nowadays. Which I think really makes an album this tight and this clean, that much more special (Melbourne Ska Orchestra came to mind in terms of something similar, still a different vibe though).
This was super fun! I'll play this again when hosting a dinner party or cooking or cleaning and need a boost of energy.
What a great party! The lyrics made me smile. So much energy. I wonder if my grandparents listened to him, I could picture them at a dance jiving away
Enjoyed it!
It’s jazz, rock and roll, and comedy(ish). And when it focuses on the first two, it’s really good! When it tries to be funny though, it’s a miss. But tracks like “Jump, Jive, An’ Wail”, “Oh, Marie” and “Buona Sera” are jams. There’s even a cover of “Night Train” which you’d recognize from the Enchantment Under the Sea in Back to the Future. The music is upbeat and strong enough to merit a 4 with some of the sillier lyrics on some tracks preventing it from hitting a 5.
Really liked the whole album...Great fun
Some good ol' fashioned listening. Walking to work on a cool Saturday listening to this brings a smile to my face.
I feel like I should be driving a big Cadillac down Route 66 while listening to this. Very Cars movie coded. Great vocals and harmonies
The enjoyable face of jazz. They obviously had a great deal of fun making this album, and it really comes over. Not usually my thing but I really did enjoy this. Got to be a 4.
This is such a happy, upbeat and fun album. A few irking songs but on the whole great.
Fun up beat, great song to cook to. Sings about his baby a lot
To chyba klasyka jazzu, ale sie nie znam. Żywe, szybkie, skoczne
Very polished and captivating
Mjög þétt plata, kom mér á óvart. Byrjaði sterkt en varð svolítið einsleit
feels very “of its time” but still holds up. Wonderfully powerful voice
Rating: 3.5 I feel like one of this guy’s songs is in Elf. I’ll be really scared if it isn’t, because that would mean this man’s extremely unique and commanding voice has been visiting me in my dreams.
Grandpa vibes but in a good way. Just plain fun.
This was great!
Prey good jazz swing music. I really do not have a problem with any of the songs. I just don’t think it is the best in the world.
Весьма самобытная и интересная музыка, бодренькая такая. 7 из 10.
Great vibes. Personality in abundance. Unstoppable energy. Some unbelievable brass. Swinging, bluesy, jazzy. The whole lot. 41 minutes - the perfect length. Pop it on while you make the dinner and just jive round your kitchen. Honking, screaming, more walking bass than you could know what to do with. 12 bar blues × 12 bar blues. I make that 144 bar blues. Classic call and response vocals. On the vocals note, wow. The rasp in the voice is perfect. The band are fantastic. Great feel good listening, popping it back on right now. Favourite track - Just a Gigolo / I Aint Got Nobody. 8/10.
Really varied, just a whole heap of fun!
Makes me wanna gran a dance partner and jive in my kitchen.
Great album! You can hear the joy in the music.
Really fun album! I feel like this album should be played when cooking dinner or something like that.
God this guy was so high. Really fun.
Lots of swing-jazz pop classics. Some tracks are outdated, but most still sound fresh and fun. I get the feeling there’s a lot of appropriation going on here — but, I’m not enough of a scholar to understand what borrowing was appropriate and what was not. It’s engaging & important listening. A four.
Ah the good ol days in the speakeasy when houses were a dollar and girls were a dime, what a life This actually slaps if you like big band or have ever played fallout which I do and have
Definitely a jam. And some of the songs are so funny? Wasn't expecting that!
There's so much i can say about this album, I never was a big jazz guy but this is the artistic pinnacle of its time. Such a subtle and soft swing, blaring sax solos in every song, theatric feel, and perfect vocals for its vibe. Sounds like something you'd put on (vinyl ofc) after the most exhausting day of your life.
I love this style!
So great, listened to this while cooking. Would recommend!!
It was fun. Haven't listened to Jazz much before this. Might revisit. My favs- The Lip , Just a Gigolo
When this popped up I want particularly excited about it. But then Just a Gigolo started up and I was actually hooked from the start. Fun! It takes me back to a time I can only imagine my grandparents would've loved. 4/5 #150
90's kid here, when I go out of my way to listen to this kind of early New Orleans jazz I look for Louis Armstrong, maybe with the vocal style and clarity, a little Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin, but this was something completely out of my radius. Eventually everything clicked when I heard Jump, Jive, An Wail, classic childhood memories attached to it. VHS and all that jazz, was it Matilda? I'm really happy I have a new artist to add to the rotation, and new names to be on the look-out for. Fell in love with Sam Butera's work. Love that, although for today a little context helps, but for the most part the album cover looks like what we're listening to. Joyous, playful, loud. I want a physical copy in my collection. 3.8/5
Overall: 7/10 Louis has such an instantly recognizable, infectious voice that puts you in a good mood as soon as you hear it. This is such a fun album to listen to and all the songs are very catchy. I also enjoy Keely Smith's contributions, her voice fits this music perfectly. The songs started to sound similar after a while but it didn't stop me from enjoying the album overall. Fav Song: Just a Gigolo/Ain't Got Nobody Least Fav Song: Body and Soul
I've been giving too many fours recently, but why not? Energetic, fun, and early to the party. Pleasure to listen to, but not sure if I will revisit it.
That was the wildest!
Loads of fun! This guy reallly hates his wife
Great album, liked the pacing and the trumpet solos
Day 24 First listen- Such a charming album! Loved all the tracks and the groooove! (4.5/5)
Super fun! Very lively New Orleans jazz and early rock 'n roll.
I love Louie Prima and Keely Smith. This album (and most of his others) are so much fun to listen to - listen to Closer to the Bone and tell me you aren't out of your seat bopping around!
Certainly a fun ride. It plays like a greatest hits collection. An energetic blending of styles and an all around good time. In the end this works better as a collection of singles than a true long play which may speak more to the number of classic tracks on here.
Surprisingly fun
I dug this. Keely Smith is an amazing vocalist. But let me just say, (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You is one of the most evil things I've ever heard -- at least on its face. I don't care to look up the actual story. It's not a Prima original, but man is it mean. I get it -- he ran off with your lady, but hell...Slayer couldn't have written it better.
Excellent album!
Soooo much energy! And excitement! What a great pre-rock artist. 4/5
Pretty cool stuff.
Super fun jazz album
between a 3.5 and a 4. This album is a ton of fun. It suffers a bit from sameness, but Louis Prima has such insane charisma that it makes up for it. The band sounds fantastic, particularly the drums whenever a song hits a huge shout chorus. Just a Gigolo is an absolute all time banger.
Another one of the albums I heard on my brief first run of the list. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I always remembered tunes such as The Lip or Jump Jive’N’Wail. The difference now compared to me at 13 was that I couldn’t quite crack jazz. It was all a very big noise to me. Time does make a difference when it comes to this record because I absolutely enjoyed it this time around. I liked it the first time but I didn’t take much home compared to today when I have more appreciation for broader music beyond the old alternative rock favorites of middle school. It also makes a difference that I’ve visited New Orleans and I have an idea of where a record like this comes from (although from research, it lies more in Vegas). Prima and his players provide joy through jazz that emphasizes fun over anything else. A hoot if you will (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)
Not quite my thing.
Somehow, this is the first album I've gotten that I've already listened to all of. I am a pretty big Louis Prima fan thanks to Martin Scorsese movies and the Mafia 2 video game. I listen to Louis a few times a year when I'm in the mood. This is pretty much a compilation album that doesn't include my favorite song of his "When you're smiling." Its also one of the oldest albums in the book.
good ol' 50s jazz vibes that are immaculate as always 7.9/10 just cus im not too good at distinguishing b/w jazz tracks
Love this guy. I bet he knew how to party and bring the best vibes. Although it's not on this album, Pennies from heaven is an all timer song. Just a gigolo is timeless as well.
Hard to match this energy! Lot's of fun songs. Glad to come across this one!
Swing album having energy, gibberish and craziness to the lyrics.
Cool!
Marvelous!
Favorite Track: The Lip
Wow ! Je m’attendais à un album fade et insipide, comme le Ray Charles, mais... WOW ! C’était léger, frais, amusant ! Une très belle et inattendue surprise !
Old school cool baby.
That was a lot of fun, and just full of energy from start to finish.
Loved this very upbeat record from a Jungle Book legend!
Sounds like a great party in a packed, humid room. I love his voice and the horns sound great. The ballads aren't too drippy either.
Classic big band music - some I've heard in random things here and there. Fun to listen to.
This was a treat. Was sceptical but this music did not sound like 1956 AND I thought I recognized this voice…it took me back to my childhood. Louis Prima was featured in the Jungle Book soundtrack. Great album!
this stuff makes me go ape (ooh ooh, ah ah.)
Very nice. Didn't listen to the whole thing but I like the introduction
Think I'd have never listened to this if it wasn't for this project. Actually really enjoyed it.
REally enjoyed this, not usually my thing but added to my playlist to listen again. Maybe i was too harsh on elvis not writing his own songs as these seem to be standards too...
Some toe tapping swing, love it
New Orleans Italian Sicilian jump blues Italian folk, language
Animado
Nice to get this right after a Frank Sinatra, as they are kind of comparable, from the era at least. I much prefer this album to the Sinatra one. More personality and variation in the songs. I recognized a few of them from movies. Plus, it's not just a focus on his singing, there are good horns as well. 4/5
Probably would listen again, really well played.
Prima, indeed!
niiice, swingy, good mood music
Really enjoyed this one
Call it my musical inexperience but it really reminds me of Fallout lol, I feel like playing it just after listening to the first couple of songs. It's a very pleasant listen, very cosy. I appreciated the instrumental songs sprinkled in every now and again, broke things up nicely. What a strong start to my 1001 albums lol. For My Baby reminded me of that one Pixar short, I think the snowman one? I noticed it like halfway through and it made it even better. Body And Soul was so cool, as the first instrumental song it surprised me a bit since I expected vocals, but the tempo and style changes were interesting. Oh, Marie wasn't bad but I thought it was cool when the saxophone echoed his gibberish in that one part. Buona Sera felt like it slowed things down a little after the hugely energetic Jump, Jive An' Wail and starts off romantic and cool and nice and good, but when it kicks in and you get that sax solo later, ooof. The sounds he was making on Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days were funny. Good song but was caught off guard, had a very nice and explosive ending. Banana Split For My Baby was very charming with the lyrics, just waffling in the best way possible about putting whipped cream and a pizza on the banana split, guy's just laughing on the track as he's singing, hella charming. The whistling is so catchy in Whistle Stop. Be Mine wasn't my favourite choice of an ending track but it was decent enough, maybe swapping Be Mine and Whistle Stop might've been better, imho. FAVOURITES - Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody; Body And Soul; Buona Sera; Banana Split For My Baby LEAST FAVOURITES - The Lip; You Rascal You
The first song, even just the first few seconds set the tone very well. The contrast between the joy in his voice and subject matter of loneliness in the first track is a cool way to express his ideas. In fact this kind of contrast occurs throughout the whole album. The album is strong throughout, the moments where he isn't singing the instrumental fills the space perfectly and these points were often even more enjoyable. Banana Split For My Baby is super fun, evoking the absurd image of spoiling his Baby with the hugest most calorific banana split then having her pay. It's filled to the brim with personality as he cheekily laughs to himself throughout knowing full well what he's going to do. As for the final 2 tracks they are decent but after the rest of the album I felt they didn't add much and led to an ending that felt just okay. At least the whistling on Whistle Stop makes it stand out somewhat. Best songs: Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody, Body and Soul, "Jump, Jive, An' Wail", Buona Sera , Banana Split For My Baby Worst Songs: Be Mine (Little Baby), The Lip
Listened to this quite a few times. Pretty fun, the instrumentals were a bit boring though. Fun chemistry between the singers. Plus he did the song from Jungle Book.
It was good. I feel like the older albums tend to be a lot less out there for the most part so it’s a lot easier to like them
This will always be in my top 5 albums, ice cube just goes off lyrically in this album. The simple but intense beat just makes him go off. Would have loved to be in the studio on this one
If you weren’t careful, you wrote Louie Prima off as a novelty act. He’s more than that, though. Also, Keely Smith is one of the forgotten gems of pre-rock and roll popular music. Her voice is the mathematical average of Ella and Doris Day.
Me gustó el álbum, no conocía nada pero muy jazzy y el dúo con la voz feminina muy fresco. Se siente como una película yankee de la época. Swing.
Very fun. Also, interesting learning about the close ties between New Orleans Italian Americans and African-Americans early in the century.
It's a good swing record. I enjoyed the performances from the instrumental tracks. All of the tracks were catchy and easy to listen to. I think that this record lacks a track that stands out. Favourite Track(s): Body and Soul Least Favourite Track(s): The Lip
Prima donna girl, all I ever wanted was the Wild
What a ham. Wish I could have seen him live. Remember when jazz was fun?
This was a fun album. I enjoyed hearing an older/original version of songs I was familiar with.
This is pretty mad. It was very enjoyable. The Wikipedia notes described his singing as demented gibberish, which felt a little harsh, but I can see why. I'm glad to have heard other songs by King Louie.
Music so joyful it could make a dead man dance. Does what it does so well. 4.5⭐
Swingin hoppin little diddies.
Fast, boppy jazz. 4/5
L'fun
The Wildest! has a great selection of songs that kept me entertained. From the comedic songs like The Lip to the instrumental pieces in Body and Soul. This album does seem to go all over the place, but it is very enjoyable all around.
Thought this one was a lot fun. I really liked how his voice and the female singer’s voice worked together. Some of the songs almost gave me musical theatre vibes, in the best way. Fav song: Buona Sera - I think it stood out to me because the beginning is a little different to the other songs. Also loved Just a Gigolo and The Lip Least fav: Body and Soul
Some absolute old timey bangers on here- especially just a gigolo and the lip. Not quite as good as be the jungle book song but still. As the album went on I realised that the intro riff was the same on almost every song and that wore me down a bit. Felt like the people in that John mulaney joke about playing what’s new pussycat 12 times. Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song- just a gigolo/ the lip Least fav- basin street blues
Fun! There were parts where the instrumentals went on a bit too long for my liking but otherwise just lovely and joyful! He's reached the top and had to stop and that's what's bothering me! Favourite: The Lip or (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You Least: Body and Soul
Prima brings an infectious energy to this album in the vocals, instrumental, and sheer amount of fun the band seems to be having. It’s not revolutionary, but I dare you to listen to this album without at least tapping your toes (It’s extremely difficult).
1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE #1 The first album to be bestowed upon me was The Wildest! and I'm rather surprised by its quality. Now I had heard the name of Louis Prima before, but this is my first time listening to him, and honestly not a bad start. The Wildest! is a short and fun time that always puts a smile on my face, with the amazing vocal and instrumental performances. I liked or loved every track on the thing with obvious standouts like "Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody" and "Jump, Jive, An' Wail'. Overall, I really enjoyed this project and is a great start to my 1001 album journey. I would give this a 90 / 100.
Lovely swing-jazz album that I would absolutely play as atmospheric music on a nice evening. I'm happy to have discovered this album!
I know of Louis Prima thanks to the HBO show Treme. The song they used was Buona Sera which I really liked and wound up adding to my library. However, I hadn’t done any other exploration of Prima’s music beyond that song. So, I was pretty stoked to check out The Wildest!. I knew of Just a Gigolo and Jump, Jive An’ Wail! thanks to David Lee Roth and Brian Setzer. I’m also a really big fan of New Orleans music so this listen was just a delight. Jubilant and fun are the words that come to mind. The album cover is absolutely accurate. I have no bad things to say about The Wildest!. I had a great time with this album. I give this a 4 rating. 4/5
This is such a fun album.
A great album. I knew many of the tracks and didn't know that they were by Louis Prima. I'll definitely listen to the album again. 4/5
So much fun. I'm not Italian, but I live surrounded by Italian Americans, and when my neighbors hear this, they get all misty and talk about their grandparents.
J'adore !
This is actually really pleasant to listen to. Love Banana Split for my Baby.
This was too too fun, and I recognized a couple of the songs! I actually laughed at the song Banana Split For My Baby. People are PRESSED about Moonbeam Ice Cream, saying they don't make music like they used to. Well...maybe not so true. I would listen to this on a Saturday morning, while cooking dinner, or if I just need a pick-me-up. Life goes on...without me!
what a LOVELY swing band to grace my ears. Louis on vocals and trumpet was just such a nice and cheerful thing, and Keely on backing vocals was a nice duality. very simple but so rich in soundssss.
Such a cool big band album, so fun and vibrant. Also, what a voice from Prima! The swingy feel to the album is so great! Love it!
Bra streit jazz
Certainly was the Wildest. The one and only King of the Swingers
This was chaotic and fun! it got a bit repetitive, but I enjoyed it :)
A lot of great songs, some of them featured in Fallout games and for a good reason.
A big Band Album! With one that inspired some of the best ska songs later? Yes please!
enjoyed it a lot!! it sounded llike so much good energy and fun. Really sounded like a kickass party was going down in the studio
really just missing pennies from heaven
This was good I was wrong…
Solid - a window into the old days
Wasn’t expecting to enjoy it so much!
What a fun album. Not totally my thing, but it grew on me. Favourite song: "Banana Split For My Baby"
Good solid classics. Swing/Jazz upbeat, sometimes funny.
Took me ages to realise it was King Louie from The Jungle Book. Really good album but not quite 5⭐️
No private session used for Spotify. I didn't know what I was getting into, but once it started rolling I knew. I knew a lot of these songs and of course covers of a lot of these songs. I don't know when I will listen to this again, but I get why it is on the list.
Swing music. Sax, trumpets, piano, double bass. Vocals by Louis Prima and Keely Smith. Some intentional gibberish lyrics, fun. The whole album is very catchy. Some glorious musicianship. Just a Gigolo/Ain't Got Nobody is a good opening. The Lip and Oh, Marie are good too. Basin Street Blues/When it's Sleepy Time and Jump, Jive An' Wail are both superb! A very fun album.
The Wildest! The goofiest! The funnest (not a word)! Louis’s the king of the swingers, yo, the hustle VIP. Him the best. Thanks for the banana split.
This album slaps. Fun, energetic songs that holds pace the entire way.
Fun, upbeat, lost a little steam and variety by the back half
Joyous Classic! Louis Prima at the top of his form. Would give it 5 stars except for the fact that the music style and songs are just a bit too old style for my taste.
What’s not to love about Louis Prima?
Sjov dixie-jazz
This was awesome. Great playing. High energy. Sounded like they had fun making it. Little nuances like hearing the band leader all fired up in the deep background. Glad to have heard this. 4 stars for sure.
Wow, I feel like I've heard all of these songs before whether through movies or other media. Fantastic album. Lots of fun.
Feels like I’m in a smoky club with some mobsters. Pass the pomade!
They dont make them like they used to
This was a fun record to listen to, probably because it's obvious they were having fun making it. It's swinging and joyous and oh boy the trumpet playing is fantastic. I am familiar with a lot of the songs because of remakes by contemporary artists, and swing music in general is something I enjoy. I just loved the voice of Keely Smith who sang on this, I sense a YouTube rabbit hole in my future.
A nice change of pace.
Honestly really fun! Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I might. Was a really great day though, Boston marathon and seeing lots of friends, so that maybe influenced me positively. Anyways yeah big band stuff is awesome
I enjoyed this album!
Banger
:theWildest:
Not my favorite overall, but the band was PLAYIN’ Edit: this was the first album of my 1001 albums journey. I was too harsh on it then. I am a changed listener. The band WAS INDEED playin’
How fun is this music?! I just listened to this with my three year old, and the little man "gets" it. Many albums from the 50s and earlier feel dated, but this one's a time capsule.
While I see where alex is coming from with the comparison to Gallagher, I don't think I'd go that far. I think a better analogy is with the person that took both his schtick and his songs...David Lee Roth. Gallagher's talent is...narrow. He can smash watermelons. I'm going to give David and Louis a bit more of a lane when it comes to their talent. Yes, perhaps still one-trick ponies, but it's a trick that feels more sincere--even if its not. Plus, the musicians on here are pretty tight. Seems like everyone is having a bit of fun here. I think I got my copy of this out of a goodwill and had grabbed it for the cover more than the music. But ended up being sucked in to the schtick. It's fun. Sometimes fun is all we need.
I quite liked it 😊
Pretty good. I forgot how much I loved the saxophone. I was also happy that there was a mix of instrumental and vocal songs.
Very good stuff
Good, Jazzy.
Not bad. A little old school and although a little sexist sometimes easier listening than wap
Actually so fun and enjoyable.
This put a smile on my face, was a fun listen. Listening to it brings up the mood.
Thought this would be kind of boring Big Band music, but pushes beyond that form with emotional vocals, really fun horn solos, variety in song structure, and surprisingly excellent production quality for something from the 50s. Had no idea this was the guy who originally did Jump Jive. Standouts for me were Gigolo, Night Train, and Be Mine. I'll Be Glad When You're Dead is also just such a funny song - wishing death on a guy who took more than his fair share of pasta at a dinner party? I need more songs about this exact situation, one is not enough. This is New Orleans style jazz right? I've always thought I like that vibe - big band, but kind of fast, loose and rowdy. In that style, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has a nice album with non-jazz artists - worth a spin - especially love "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" with Jason Isbell. Our 200th album!
I’ll admit, I wasn’t super excited when this popped up. But I couldn’t help but have a good time listening to this. Ten times more fun than Sinatra. A real gem.
The mixing on 'Just a Gigolo' threw me for a loop, but I came around to really enjoy the madcap style of this music throughout the entire album. "The Wildest" is an appropriate title for some of the most memorable swing music I've ever heard.
Knew more of this than I expected. Ultra Lounge.
A lotta fun! Give this man the fire, mancub, I think he earned it.
This one was fun from start to finish. Fresh even despite being as old as it was.
Fun and refreshing!
Gee cousin Louis, you're doing real good!
A pretty fun and impressive Jazz album that exemplifies the best of the 50s and the talent of Louis Prima.
My First introduction to Louis Prima although his voice is familiar from shows and movies. Really enjoyed the sounds of this album, puts you in a feel good mood and very relaxing.
Makes me smile
