Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Nice uptempo jazz to give you a shot of energy in the morning. Definitely has some funny old-timey lyrics like Banana Split for my Baby. Otherwise it is really good jazz that makes you want to dance. Night Train was terrific.

Vocal Jazz is a good name for the genre cuz this guy is yellin'. This would be a ton of fun to see live I feel like in the right environment. Also cool he recorded this with his wife. Oh shit I definitely know Jump, Jive an' Wail, this shit slaps I am snapping my fingies. Also have definitely heard Buona Sera. 10/10 would eat spaghet to this. This was a randomly fun album, I love the trumpet and this guy seems to have what the kids say "rizz"

An album chock-full of saxy-trumpety jazz swing. It's good fun, although some of the tracks are definitely stinkers, which holds it far back from getting the coveted 5-star award. These stinkers include The Lip (a brutally narcissistic song trying its best to be coverable by other artists), Be Mine, and Body and Soul (two uninteresting tracks with few memorable moments). The remaining tracks, however, are generally better; the opener to the album, Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody, is the strongest. The lead vocalists (of which there are several) are great. Super strong and full of personality, yet still laid-back and non-overstepping. Soft brushes play a swing beat on the drums during most tracks, creating a lovely jazz bar atmosphere. Definitely approaching the best of pre-60s "pop" music. 4/5

I love Louis Prima's voice! It's got a very unique quality and paired with his style he brings so much character to whatever song he's singing. This album really swings and Sam Butera is fantastic on the saxophone. This one was a lot of fun and an enjoyable listen.

I thoroughly enjoy this record. Keely Smith is a perfect pairing for Primo and should get more credit. The scat and call and response is great and you can feel how much fun it probably was to be in the studio.

Maybe I was in the perfect mood for this album, but I had a damn good time listening to it. It's just fun, through and through. I want to have a party where we serve Jello Molds, some sort of champagne cocktail out of a punch bowl, and have this album playing in the background.

2 songs that virtually everyone has heard. The rest was pretty entertaining. Don’t care to listen to more, but it’s still 4 stars.

This album was a lot of fun. Ride home from Nashville and listened with the family. I was shocked to hear Jump Jive a Wail.

Life could be dream type beat. Actually really entertaining, it’s clear that this guy was an entertainer as much as he was a musician. Most joyful listen I’ve had in a bit

Happy.

Vozarrón

I've hit the first snag in the road on my album journey- should I be rating objectively or subjectively? This would have been something good to have decided two albums ago, but per usual in projects of mine, this will just have to develop as I go. Luckily, I feel my subjective and objective opinions line up pretty well for the albums I have listened to thus far. This, however, will be the first minor exception... Objectively, this album is perfect. 5 Stars. It does what it set out to do, and while I've never dipped my feet into jazz, this feels like a great introduction. This kind of work feels timeless. It's aged for sure, but more so aged like fine-wine rather than some church lady hard candy that's been in their purse for 8 years. I want this album to be played from the heavens when I go to New Orleans, or to some fancy restaurant, or just that New Orleans-themed part of Disney World. It's simply so easy to listen to. If I had a record player, I would swoop this one up if I saw it in a store, no hesitation. Unfortunately, however, I can't give this album 5 stars, merely based on the fact that I will never willingly listen to a track on here again. I know that sounds harsh, but deep down, I know it's true. I mentioned that I would love to hear this album on vinyl, or in a restaurant, and you'll notice that a common theme along those fantasies is that they all involve me listening to the album as I am doing something else. That's my gripe. I don't even mean this to the music's detriment- I'm not sure it was intended to be listened to through AirPod Pros in a cramped college dorm room at 10 in the morning on a random Tuesday. I simply just can't extract a lot of concentrated pleasure out of many of the tracks on this album, and it would feel wrong to put rate this 5 stars above albums that I have actually begun to shuffle into my playlists. To you, Louis, you are (were?) awesome. Great work. In conclusion, this is a good album that's easy on the ears, but not much more than that. Oh yeah, and I guess from now I can say I'll be rating based on some weird mish-mash of subjectivity and objectivity. Favorite Track: Just a Gigolo - I knew this song before, but still, I got to put it up highest. I know lyrics aren't a main focus on this album, but I honestly enjoy the message on this track. Least Favorite Track: Oh Marie - Not sure on this one... I really do mean it when I say it's hard to find a track not to like on this album. I just think around this point things start to get a bit dull. Final Score: 7 out of 10.

This is exactly the kind of album I was hoping for when I joined this challenge; I've heard of Louis Prima, but as far as I know I'd never heard any of his music. And I loved this -- it was so much fun. I don't think it will occur to me to play this again on my own, but I'd be very happy to listen to it more than once.

Medium-wild, but very fun! Not my favorite genre of music but seemed well executed and well paced. Huge points for originating Jump, Jive and Wail which would briefly take over radio 40 years later.

I loved this! Louis Prima’s voice was very unique, and Keely Smith’s voice was so smooth. I loved the jazzy Broadway swing vibe.

I enjoyed this.

That was incredibly fun

I really really really liked this. I feel like I search for music like this sometimes and can’t find what I’m wanting. One song is viral on tiktok though and that’s always bleh. Not the song but tiktok

Just a Gigolo

Boy that Louis sure has fun. Gotta agree with everyone else, this is just a “joyous” album. The soundtrack to every fun family cooking montage ever. Songs added to Spotify: 2

This whole album has such a bright, cheerful sound. Love the tongue-in-cheek lyrics and the scat. Amazon music tells me that Louis Prima is styled as Louis Armstrong, which is a relief - for at least a couple of the songs, if you told me it was Louis Armstrong I would have believed it. Love Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody, which naturally I know from David Lee Roth, and Jump, Jive, An' Wail, which is a swing classic. Night Train is new to me and also a stand out.

Louis Prima was a vocalist that helped establish the early sounds of rock 'n roll. He combined jazz, boogie-woogie, and R&B styles and added his expressive charisma to his songs. The songs on this album are the classic standards of rock: "Jump, Jive, 'an Wail," "Just a Gigalo," and "Night Train." Prima was one of the formative voices of early rock music. His piano centered music with prominent contributions from his horn section helped create the sound of early rock 'n roll.

Solid 50s jazz

Puh, schwierig: da sind einige Ohrwürmer dabei, und jetzt kenne ich auch den Namen Louis Prima. Aber es ist eben doch nicht unbedingt meine Musik. Vote 4

Music to listen to while cooking!

Top of the line jazz album, such great vibes all around.

I feel like I’m watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, so I’m vibing like cool cat fr, smoking a doobie- it’s solid old school jazz, I can fuck with it for sure. The vibes of the late 50’s early 60’s was just so cool, peak art aesthetic era; need me a restored MCM New York apartment

Fun, nostalgic music.

That was a fun album!

Fun album!

This was pretty darn fun. I knew “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” and “Jump, Jive and Wail” from the 80’s remakes by David Lee Roth and Brian Setzer (of The Stray Cats). The rest was catchy and had my toes-a-tapping. Was gonna knock it down for having a number of songs that sounded kinda similar, which I do a lot here. But I liken this early stuff to Chuck Berry, where a bunch of it kinda sounds alike but since it’s basic rock and roll I don’t mind as much. Seems like an album my parents might have owned but it wasn’t familiar. They had either a Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich album though.

The King of Swing! Really enjoyed this. Time Machine music.

His voice is so soothing

Listening to old jazz one sometimes feels it's a nice time portrait but nothing more. The break and solo in "I ain't Got nobody" is something else. It is frankly excellent, even today, few musical bars makes my face look live I've eaten a lemon as much as that solo. "The lip" was a fun duet. Actually the whole album just breathes a fun energy. I think "(I'll be glad when you're dead) You rascal you" is the most upbeat version I've heard of the song (and it's complete with skitting over "When the saints come marching in"). While on the topic the solos are great, one of them even has a nod to "Hall of the Mountain king". The more I think of this album the happier I get. The low points in the album is the slower songs but one can not have the high energy of "Jump Jive and Wail" for a whole time. A high-energy and fun album. Like you got invited to a party with the "Alley Cats" from "Aristocats".

very good, gives lots of nostalgia

nice old music, knew songs from it

i like this one, it's very upbeat, banana split, buona sera and gigolo were my favorite songs

кайф получен

Now you’re talking! This was awesome! Swings, jives, bops and bangs! Awesome stuff!

King Louie! Yes, I mostly know Louis Prima from his Jungle Book role, as well as his classic song "Pennies From Heaven" (macaroni!), and in both of those appearances he is a rip-roaring good time! Surprise, he is here too! The energy felt in these tracks has me excessively using exclamation marks! While swing and jazz aren't my genres of choice, this was an extremely easy, warm listen.

Playful selection of jazz standards! I enjoyed it more than the previous jazz album I was recommended, not because the music itself was better (It was just as good) but the audio recording quality. This album had pristine audio quality for its time. It just goes to show how mixing and audio quality can make or break an album. That said, I really enjoy Solange Borges Bom Dia Universo and Mus Mujiano's Yang Pertama album which are diamonds in the rough that suffer from unfortunate audio quality.

A lot of fun, I bet this was a good time live. A little too much trumpet for me.

Enjoyed this a lot, it was a great one to have on while cooking dinner. Not something I would listen to often, but it is an interesting mix of a few different genres. I found some of the songs to be quite transportative - felt like I was back in New Orleans for a bit!

I enjoy swing music.

All great tunes, I liked the signature riff at the end of each song. My favorite was “”Oh, Marie”

White Louis is a national treasure, even though he (in part) ripped off Louis Armstrong. It took me 3-4 attempts to listen to this album because "Just A Gigolo" made me crack like a nut. He's hysterically expressive, and his unhinged usage of onomatopoeia and nonsense Italian gibberish is a class act. He's maybe less of a musical genius and more of a stand-up comedian caught up in the middle a swing dancing club. He could've been in Season 2 of "The White Lotus" for sure. Come to find out, he's the goddamn "Pennies From Heaven" guy! I about screamed! I went to NY for the first time this past fall, and my entire internal monologue was him going "SHOO- BEE, DO-BEE." Over. And. Over. I'd never felt more American in my life. Honorable mention: he did songs for "The Jungle Book." Who would've thought this guy proclaiming "I will be glad when you're dead!" about someone stealing his meatballs would write tunes for bears singing to children. The 50s were WACK AS HELL, but you can’t possibly listen to Louis Prima and feel an ounce of sadness.

Best Song The Lip

I really enjoyed listening to this album. I didn’t realize that I knew the artists work, but not the name.

Very high energy. Makes you wanna bust out dancing. Extremely well-produced for how old it is. An album that is mostly carried on fun alone.

I tend not to like this kind of Jazz - I’m more into stuff from the ‘60s and ‘70s when it gets more free form - but this is a lot of fun. So many iconic songs played with verve.

Wow, this was great. The kind of surprise documentary that keeps me going.

Love Louis Prima! I’d say one of the live releases would be a better addition to this list, so you can get a sense of the energy that Prima would bring, but this is good for a studio release.

The Wildest! is a beautiful throwback sound, a joyous listen and there's wonderful camaraderie between everyone on the record. It's great occasion party music, big bang, swing sound, brass instruments and the lot, could also pass as a film soundtrack and indeed Prima was in the Jungle Book, quite the infectious character throughout this too. Made me smile, gets a 4.

This is really good fun, he's having a great time, as are all the contributors. You can't help but smile listening to it, it's not a live album but it's got all the energy of a live performance. Also there's probably the OG diss track in (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You, which is possibly the funnest and silliest of the lot. Livened up a boring afternoon of emails, 4/5.

What a fucking vibe!

👍🏾

Fantastic toe-tapping album. It's exactly my 'kind of music' anyway, and I have several Louis Prima tracks in my playlist.

Among the best of its genre that I've heard Great energy and fun

This was a fun surprise! Louis Prima was dope in the Jungle Book as King Louie and this album has all the fun and energy of I Want to Be Like You. I loved how varied it was track to track, the vocals were great and the big brass sections were powerful. A fun jazz record that I hadn’t yet come across.

Okay jazzy music of the fifties

Crazy album; it may have been revolutionary in the 50s. I imagine my grandfather dancing this like crazy

Excellent album. Delicious to hear such good songs from another era.

Very fun listen. Helped out a lot of work. Great recommendation, makes you happy.

Completely caught off guard with this album. Loved it. A nice hidden gem.

Love me some jazz, heard some stuff that other folks have covered, and the original is just as awesome.

Man, this music is just fun. Gets me dancing.

I felt l like I should be wearing a lampshade and spilling a martini all over the rug when I heard this.

Classic

Fum memories

Catchy, I could dance to this, i mean, if I could actually dance.

Fun and charming. Love the medleys and the Italian bits

Unbelievably fun and energetic. Knew I'd like it, didn't expect to like it as much as I do. 4/5

Pleasantly suprised by this album. A lot of fun.

Too much fun Didn’t realize I knew his music!

Basically all iconic and gimmicky music. Not something I would choose to listen to but I guess the world would be different without it.

I was surprised I enjoyed this so much!

Great swing album with lots of blues and jazz influence, and a couple classics you'd hear in a Italian household growing up. Doesn't get much better for ol' timey music.

Louis Prima is pretty classic, and this is just so wonderful to listen to. It's great jazz, and I noticed quite a few bits that have been sampled in more modern music.

very nostalgic! So much fun and great to hear The Lip again, especially. Good walking music too!

Louis Prima: wow, a couple of songs in, this is great!

Slaps.

This is an amazing album with a lot of classic songs. It's a high energy album that is just super fun to listen to.

Great album! A lot of fun to listen to and will certainly be putting on to make dinner. I’ve already shared it with a few people. Pleasant surprise. 4 stars

Perfecto para escuchar en casa cocinando o cuando te crees main character ✨

Lekker, optimistisch, verrassend en gevarieerd.

Energiek en swingend. Fijne ontdekking!

Classic 50s sound! Louis is one of a kind. His songs are what I think of when someone says '50s music'. Bonus star for "Jump, Jive an' Wail" and a song about being a gigolo.

Overall: Can we shout out the DRUMMER? Drummer brought it when he needed, switched it like a boss, that drummer was INSANE. Also (and this may be because some of the songs were remastered? But not all) props to whoever did the mixing. As much as I love a good horn section, it can get shrill if not mixed properly. I was listening to this with airpods in, and didn't get the shrill. Which is insanely impressive for this era (but again, could've been due to the remaster). I loved the simplicity and pure joy of everything, with a pure "I wanna play around and see where we go" vibe. Would definitely relisten. Favorite songs: Body and Soul Night Train Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days

Things this album makes me want to do/feel... make a martini; spend all day making a sunday sauce while drinking said martini; new york at Christmas time (thanks Elf soundtrack). The bass and the brass are my favorites.

Very cool! I found myself picturing live stage show of old. Very comforting.

This is the most fun I’ve had listening to an album in a long time.

I actually really loved it. This is out of what I'd normally listen to, but it's fun and upbeat. This dude would have been a rip to see live.

I actually really loved it. This is out of what I'd normally listen to, but it's fun and upbeat. This dude would have been a rip to see live.

Classic, beautiful voice

Like I’m back in the world of Fallout. Banana Split for my lady gave me a good laugh. Solid album. Lots of great instruments and the talent of the various voices sing for themselves.

Little casual sexism knocks of a mark or two, but otherwise, such fun and great sound!

The Wildest! Is a swinging good time. Everything about Louis and co on this album is joyous, cheeky and fun. If this album doesn’t lift your spirits and make you tap your feet, nothing will.

A master of a forgotten genre. Almost feels like novelty music due to over use of some of his songs, but can't deny there are some solid tracks on this album.

Heard the “I ain’t got nobody” riff/phrase before but not in context, that was cool. Jump Jive and Wail popular cover (Brian Setzer) late 90s so I knew that one. Buona Sera another popular one. Cool to revisit swing/jazz/big band again, many great players. Some funny lyrics throughout, I enjoyed this collection a lot.

Louis Prima sounds a lot like Louis Armstrong - but wilder! He has a very similar sound to Armstrong's New Orleans jazz trumpet. Keely Smith also has a wonderful voice.

I liked it! Fun vibes Favorite tracks -Body and Soul -Buona Sera -Night Train

Now this is the music that’s playing when you’re sitting around having a nice elegant Italian dinner with all your loved one… at Carabbas. When you’re here, you’re family. 7/10

I always thought Louis Prima was black. Not that it matters. Or does it? Idk. He just has a very distinct deep black voice. Right? Not that all black people have deep rich voices or anything. I’m not racist. I have black friends. I mean they aren’t my friends but I know them. And I know they like jazz music. I blame Louis Armstrong. I’m not racist. Please cancel me now. 8/10

One of the most recognizable voices that I didn’t recognize. 50s music to fine dine to. I like the gigalo song. 8/10

Fun album that I assume was popular music for the era it comes from, several songs that I've heard before but never known the artist.

Super fun energy. Made me want to get up and start dancing.

Really fun album, great singer

Great from front to back. In Vegas right now and this was the perfect soundtrack to walking the strip and through casinos.

Embarrassed to say I didn’t recognize the artist because I recognized all the music! Thoroughly enjoyed

Great fun album. Reminds me of my grandma's house. King Louie from the Jungle Book.

I love big band jazz music! There's something about it that I romanticize. It hearkens back to a time that I find to be almost other worldly. I didn't know Louis Prima by name, but some of these songs definitely sounded familiar. After giving the album a few listens, I would place him the Louis Armstrong echelon of Big Band Jazz musicians. It is an incredibly fun album. Prima loads each song with tons of charisma, and his voice is exactly what I would want for this type of music. Loved this album!

There’s only potentially one more inspirational kitchen prep album. 3.8

I'm such a sucker for walking bass lines. This reminds me of home, specifically Cardy's.

Nok det jazz jeg nogensinde har hørt jeg bedst kan lide. King Loius fra Junglebogen! For at citere Silads: “Det swinger!”

.Entertaining 50s album - new for me, liked it a lot.

Truly entertaining and uplifting: I only knew 'Oh Marie' and 'Buona Sera' and the other tracks fit in there just as well.

A blast! The energy level and humor of this music is off the charts. I can't imagine any music fan of any generation who wouldn't enjoy this. It's timeless, exceptionally executed party music. Wonderful!

It's the orangutan from The Jungle Book!

Energetic! Would listen to most of it again

Delightful!

A fun jaunt back to the past, it's upbeat and you can hear him having a good time. Worth the time for King Louis alone.

Hyggelig!! Go energi fra Kong Louis

bello, nel suo stile davvero ascoltabile e divertente.

awesome album a loot of good songs +4

This album was way better than I was expecting.

Too many trumpets for my liking, but good to have heard all of it. Groovy!

Very nice old music, banana split for my baby was a jam

I really like Louis Prima but I don't like all of his songs. The songs I like, I absolutely love but others don't do it for me. Some songs of this era I find grating. Overall I was really happy to see a Louis Prima album on here

I didn’t have much faith in this one after the first minute but, damn, what a turnaround and what a sweet album. His featured singers, especially the female voice in the first few tracks were lovely and so talented. Great throwback.

A couple good tunes. Wasn't a big fan of the instrumental tracks.

Fun, unpretentious swing music. The combination of Prima's and Keely Smith's voices is magnificent. I can only imagine that this music might have once been considered scandalous.

it's really not my kind of music (i kinda wish it was!), but i really loved the first song, and i'm rating this a little higher than i might normally just bc I think i may want to revisit it

kann mich nicht beschweren. hab ich mehr enjoyed als ich dachte. gute stimmung

When I saw this listed as “vocal jazz” I thought it was going to be a slog, but what a fun album. Its got the original version (I think) of Hanni El Khatib’s “you rascal you”, some other songs that I either know or know from covers, and the great opener just a gigolo (gigolo, gigolo). That’s not even mentioning the greatest song ever, banana split for my baby. Also thought I recognized his voice and thought maybe I was just getting confused with another famous Louis that makes similar music, but nope, this mofo voiced king Louis from jungle book. Respect.

- Actually a very pleasant listen - Normally I'm fine with instrumental jazz but the vocals added a lot here - 3.75

Just so much fun. Skill and class all the way.

Surprise surprise I love it. Why don’t I have a vocal jazz playlist?

Great performances, but understandably enough the lyrics are dated and in places some may find them offensive.

Fun album, great oldies songs. Didn't realize i knew so many of Loius Prima's songs. Mostly high energy and Prima is very charismatic on thus record.

7/10 - More familiarity than I'd realized but feels a bit played out due to heavy pop culture use.

Very fun, highly enjoyable

Bouncy, finger popping big band. Quality. 4.5

Nice. Jazzy. 50’s. Other descriptive words.

Honestly really fun and enjoyable.

i feel like i'm sitting in a coffee bean and tea leaf but the coffee bean and tea leaf is just my bedroom and i'm eating the broccoli i roasted for dinner anyway i love a good jazz standard so this album did not disappoint

oh to be just a gigolo

i liked this a lot and i can appreciate the struggle of having to get a water after your girl orders everything she wants at the restaurant

Funny lyrics! I especially liked the Banana Split song lyrics. Some familiar classics in here that make you say "oh yeah, I wondered who sang this one."

Classic big band jazz that has a funky twist that will tickle any 21st century ear!

Sounds surprisingly familiar despite being ~7 decades old

Oddly, I quite enjoyed this one.

Really enjoyable, albeit a little bit monotonous

I already know I love Louis Prima's music

50s jazz - what's not to like?

was pretty cool

Very enjoyable listen. Easy listening is not a genre I listen to a lot but this was pretty enjoyable. I mostly know Louis Prima as King Louis in the Jungle Book and from that Kids See Ghosts sample. I could see myself putting this on in the background for a nice casual listen.

lowkey baller. An enjoyable representation of swing music and the pop feel of that time. I will listen again someday.

Rambunctious! I defy anyone to not smile when listening to this. And jive!

Old old old Dance music

Fuckin nasty jams

Great Jazz Album 4/5 Stars

Not my usual style but I enjoyed it and particularly like Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody and Basin Street.

A very fun album to listen to. Anyone who needs to lift up the mood, this is it.

Warm voice, warm music, this is charming and energizing. Some of the songs are dated and/or derpy but most of them just sound great. I of course had to accompany the listen with the clip of him as King Louie in the 1967 version of The Jungle Book - legendary stuff.

I like it!

Louis prima fucking rules

This one was pretty good. A lighter 4, but still a 4. It had a fun energy to it that I enjoyed. It may have gotten old if it was longer, but it was only thirty minutes, so it avoids that pitfall. I liked the smoothness of Keely Smith's voice paired with the roughness of Prima's. My partner didn't like this album very much, but I guess I see something in it that they don't. My favourite song was Just a Gigolo.

Fun uncovering old memories!

All around fun to listen to.

Seems great

Bra sväng!

not bad

Dobre, ale nie mam ochoty na takie.

what a fun album! an abundance of old school swing music. and some of these songs have been covered by popular artists. nothing like a good cover tune.

Infectious New Orleans musical gumbo. Really love this album.

He's got da ting

We need more of such music!

I dug it. Though I especially dug the music Amazon recommended after the end of the album.

This was fun. I’m glad I was exposed to it. I could feel the chemistry among the band members., and that was enjoyable. I would gladly fire up the holodeck and go hang out at a club with Riker and these folks.

Did "gigolo" mean something else in the '50s?

Uplifting. Energetic. Cheeky. Enjoyed it quite a bit Also, can't ignore the fact that it has some GREAT trombone. HL: "Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody", "(Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby", "Body and Soul", "Basin Street Blues / When It's Sleepy Time Down South" September 3, 2023

His voice is giving Jungle Book vibes

The laughing Louis Prima on the cover about sums it up. A good album - I had fun listening to it.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Just a gigolo, I’ll be glad when you’re dead

This is my first album from the 50s and I'm really excited about this one. Listening through it, I felt like I was in my childhood barber shop or a neighborhood deli, waiting for a badass sandwich. The arrangements are all full of charm that puts a smile on my face. I could easily see myself listening to this again while cleaning or cooking. Make on a springtime drive with the windows down. I don't know enough about jazz or swing music to know about influence or importance, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. 4*

Love this kind of music, it fits to snugly into whether you're in a boogie mood or chillout mood, with humour/scat to boot! Favourite track is probably 'Banana Split for my Baby', found the album stopped very suddenly though without a winddown, did enjoy the whole thing though, a nice fun album. Also Keely Smith is utterly delightful, I could listen to her all day.

It wa good! Would definitely listen again.

Swing and big band goodness! Full of real toe tappers with some excellent musicianship.

The good thing about this is that I would've never listened to a Louis Prima album. As soon as the first song started, my toe was tapping, and it didn't stop until the end of the last song. I instantly loved the album when I realised King Louie was singing it!

Fun album! Great to hear the original version of some songs I knew through their re-makes. Consistent energy, but a lack of variation makes it a bit repetitive by the end—and the style, though distinctive does make it less relevant to modern ears. Great dinner music!

groovy and has good potential for theatre / other projects. Keely Smith really kills it and i lowkey enjoy her parts the most. I dont really listen a lot to 50's, but i can see how it inspired future generations

Heel enjoyable speakeasycore achtig. Simpele jazz en vrolijke, humoristische teksten. Ik zou hier vroeger op uitgaan. En leuk om te horen waar Buena Sera van Hazes vandaan komt. Of is dit ook weer een cover? Wie houdt het bij. Leuk album!

Really iconic, recognisable voice. Didn't really know the name but know loads of his songs (particularly that one in Elf). Hard not to enjoy it, sounds so authentic, makes me feel classier by association. Not sure I would get a specific urge to listen to Louis but top background music. The hit you in the eye line in the second song was a bit of a surprise but a quick Google suggests he probably isn't a wife beater so I'll let it slide.

Quite the exciting album. Body and Soul and The Lip were really enthralling. This is an album made by a musician and band that are having an absolutely fantastic time. Louis Prima has a melodic, fun voice, cannot believe he was Italian-American. Incredibly rarely outstays its welcome. I can't quite bring myself to give it a 5 though.

I must emphasise that I really am not a 'jazz' person, but I genuinely enjoyed this - a lot more than I was expecting to. The opening track was a strong one 'just a gigolo' was melancholy but somehow maintained a playful feeling to it. This playful, spontaneous energy can be heard throughout the album - it's begging you to break out into a jive. Louis Prima's vocals remind me of James Brown in places, it's an iconic voice that suits the feel of the album. Somewhere between gravelly and muscular. The saxophone playing is all over the place...and I mean that in the best way possible. I didn't get bored listening to this, and how could I? Favourite tracks: "just a gigolo", "I'll be glad when you're dead".

a classic but not my everyday taste. Very dynamic...

Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody- A sad but happy at the same song, talking bout being an everyday man, with no love (10) (Nothing’s Too Good) For My Baby- Club feeling to it, about a love who deserves anything (6) The Lip- Not as bad, but still not my taste (6.5) Body And Soul- A jazzy sound that is real smooth (8) Oh, Marie- Rushed, same jazzy happy vibe (5) Basin Street Blues/When It’s Sleepy Down South- Another good vibe song- (9) Jump, Jive, An’ Wail- A ‘jumpy’ song about getting moving, really good intrusmentals and overall amazing (9.5) Buona Sera- Another lively song that fits the vibe perfectly- (9) Night Train- A bit sullen, and less jivey as the past two. Not bad though (6.5) (I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead) You Rascal You- A funny song about wishing someone the worst, except it feels the complete opposite (7.5) Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days- Another rushy song, talking about getting his baby back? (6) Banana Split For My Baby- A jazzy song that unlike others, is more though out (10) Whistle Stop- Another good planned song, with the same liveliness (9.5) Be Mine (Little Baby)- Another courting song, good to end off the album (7) Summary: An album full of happy vibes and some really good songs for the time period it was made. Could be a bit shortened, but not a huge problem; OVERALL: 7.5/10

Not much wrong with this but it never hits great

Nejlepší písničky: Just A Gigolo (pyčo vodvaz kámo), ('ll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You (haha text samozřejmě, vajbík) Nejhorší písničky: Five Months, Two Weeks (ok chápeme, že seš divokej, ale chill, tohle bylo docela sus); Banana Split For My Baby (divnej text, nechápu jestli to měl být eufemismus nebo co) Hodnocení: 8/10

I had such a fun time with this one! I love this era of music and this had such a great mix of more serious jazz standards and comedic, light tunes.

Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody is hands down the best medley known to man. Love it!

I'm a sucker for New Orleans music. This is just a fantastic mélange of styles which really swings with a great jazzy big band accompaniment. Vocals solid and expressive too. Never sat down and listened to an album from Louis Prima before... but some of these tracks are absolute classics. A great example of the sort of thing that needs to be on this list! I am jealous of anyone who has never experienced this style of music before at this quality.

18th July 2023 Listened on the drive back from the office. Team picnic in Holland Park then bits and pieces when home. Tax rebate. Loved this, he’s warm and funny and we have one of these tracks on Dusty’s playlist.

An irresistible, energetic, relentless 30 minutes.

I love this guy's energy. It's a real good time, with some FAT trumpet. I'm Baloo in that moment in the Jungle Book where he can't help but be taken by the music. I'm gone man, solid gone.

Enjoyed this one. Louis Prima has a good voice, the band clearly enjoyed what they were doing. The duets with Keely Smith were solid.

Already a fan of Louis Prima and a few songs on this album, trumpet playing is incredible and just a happy album to listen to. If the songs I’m unfamiliar with are good then this is easily a 5/5. Couple of weak songs that bring it down but overall love this album

Love this. Great jive and dancehall tunes form the 50's

I think the most surprising thing about this album is how many of the songs I recognized. A lot of them, I've heard this specific version before, but I've also heard covers of several of these songs. All of the music is very fun and lively, which matches Louis Prima's delivery very well. It's a fucking kick ass early rock record that forms a clearer bridge between the big band/swing era and the rock era than I've heard elsewhere 4/5

Heyyyy Louis!! The wild man himself. In fact, maybe THE WILDEST! I wonder if we will get any other albums of his on here but if not, this was a good display. I Ain't Got Nobody, Jump Jive an Wail, and Buona Sera are some favs of mine on here. Just your classic Italian singing his heart out and rousing the crowd. What more can you want?

Medley: Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody-4.3/5 (Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby- 3.2/5 The Lip- 3.7/5 Body and Soul- 3.4/5 Oh Marie- 3.2/5 Basin Street Blues/When It's Sleepy Time Down South- 3.5/5 Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days- 3.5/5 Jump, Jive an' Wail- 5/5 Buono Sera- 4.7/5 Night Train- 3.6/5 (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You- 3/5 Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days- 3.6/5 Banana Split for My Baby-4.1/5 Whistle Stop- 3.8/5 Be Mine (Little Baby)- 4/5 4/5 overall

Definitely got that swing. Great big band sound. Keely Smith's duets sounds beautiful. Love how soaked in Italy this is too.

Well, that was a MFing pleasure.

Love Louis Prima. My one complaint about his music is that his songs all have the same closing and musical themes. But that's Louis. His music is awesome and definitely a required listen. 4/5.

I’m a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody, Body and Soul, Oh, Marie, Jump Jive an’ Wail, Night Train, I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead, Whistle Stop and Be Mine. Alfa jazz. Saxophone and drums kill it.

Very solid oldies music. Very catchy with great sax and vocals. FS: For My Baby, Basin Street

Super nostalgic for me, reminds me of a Sunday dinner at my Nonna's house. Enjoyed it greatly.

I wanna be like you-ooh-ooh

Really enjoyable. Great energy, good funky vibes. Crazy that this is from the '50s.

Heard before. Just A Gigolo is still a bop. I'm treasuring the memories of dancing to this song with my sister on Just Dance. Funny, how most of the songs start off with the same pattern or are of the same build. You'd think that Just a Gigolo was about to start again, only to find out it's a different song. But overall nice. + The Lip + Oh, Marie + Basin Street Blues

Very jazzy

I’d only ever listened to greatest hits collections and have always been a fan. Kind of cool to hear a full album.

Thank you, Louis Prima, for showing me that there is actually jazz that I DO like.

Man, this album really swings so hard. Really made me want to find a woman and dance, which is a hell of an achievement for an album. Favorite track: Oh, Marie

first listen classic swing

Unoffensive swing album. Good representation of the 50's sound

Too much fun!

This is the type of music I wish my Dad had listened to more. Such a fun album and the energy is through the roof. Listening to it makes me want Jump,Jive an' Wail My only minus is the intros to a few of the songs start to sound the same - that never dampened my love of the Ramones

There are some filler tracks, but overall, the hits really hit.

What a wonderful romp this one is! I realize it's a 'best of' album but, start to finish, it's deserving of a place on the list. I mean, c'mon, why would you ever need to hear any other version of Just a Gigolo?

Well this is straight up fun.

Ah, es una locura linda este disco. Muy entretenido.

Enjoyable

Yo this fuckin slaps

Completely delightful album. I challenge anyone in a bad mood to listen to this and NOT feel better. Prima's voice is one in a million, and instantly injects you with cozy nostalgia for a time you may never have lived, but certainly want to.

OG (Original Gangster, not Olive Garden) jazz, swing, and jump blues standards performed with jubilance and reverence for the genres.

Fun album from the time. I think I've heard echoes of this my entire life.

Too early for The Jungle Book, I know. But wouldn’t this album have been amazing if it had King Louie’s ‘wanna walk like you’ on here? This was just lively, uplifting, joyous fun. Loved it. Not necessarily the wildest, but the funnest? For sure!

This is an album I didn’t know I needed to hear. But I did. So fun. It is an album that would be great to listen to while making homemade pasta and gravy for my (nonexistent) large Italian family with my (also nonexistent) Italian sisters. Also, I am not Italian.

This was a fun and diverse listen. Prima must have been a great show to catch live.

8.5/10. I loved it. It reminded me of fallout. Love the brass accompanying it.

I had a really fun time listening to this one. I think we can thank Fallout for me even entertaining the idea of music like this. Now I have a fondness for this sound. I especially like the duets. I'm starting to find the vocal jazz artists that I enjoy. 4

Super fun, loved the voice on Keely Smith. *insert gif of George McFly boppin’ at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance*

Gramp's own Pa's easy listening. Put the record on in the ol' folks home and watch them stare far away into the distant past remembering a different time back when they were young and spry and their parents who controlled the radio had Louis Prima on it. So far away, and yet, I can connect with the music today. The Wildest! endures.

Honky honky tonk

Tasty!

The title says it all. AROo Very cool pre alt sound, very special. Didn't stick in my brain a lot melodically but i don't think it's trying to. The contrasts hold a place in me though.

Wild and swingin!

Great lively swing with timeless appeal

50 talet hade sån slop production man... de hä gick hårt

Very fun record

Came without expectations, found a nice collection of songs

"The Wlldest!" is an album that was recorded by New Orleans trumpeter and vocalist Louis Prima, vocalist and wife Keely Smith and saxophonist Sam Butera and The Witnesses. The album was recorderded live at the Las Vegas Sahara Lounge at 3AM on April 19, 1956. The genre is swing and jump blues. The album begins with a cover medley of "Just a Gigolo" and "Ain't Got Nobody (And Nobody Cares for Me)." Now this is fun. Swing and jump blues....Yes. Great female backing vocals. A sax and trumpet solo. Of course, a lot of people may know this from the David Lee Roth cover. Keely Smith takes over the vocals on "(Nothing Too Good) For My Bady." Horns. Piano. Goofy vocals making up sounds as they go as Louis joins in. "The Lip" continues the fun and games. More blues with piano. "Yip. Yip, yip...no one plays like Louis the Lip." The piano that is. A song that defines swing and jump blues is "Jump, Jive an' Wail." Great horns. A piano solo. Another song remade later on by Brian Setzer. "Buona Sera" is a serenade to Napoli, the Mediterranean and his girl. Prima scatting and the song starts to jive. Sax, noises, clapping and I'd imagine lots of dancing while recording. I'd never thought of time traveling back to 1956 but if I did I'd probably want to be in The Sahara Longe on April 19 at 3AM. I can see why a number of artists have covered versions of these songs. A album to kick back and have fun to.

Good stuff

Absolutely fantastic. Love the call and response with him and the saxophone. Also my first quote when I heard the album was “I think this is the guy who sings Pennies from heaven” and it was. Would have given 5 stars, but “a woman is a woman, and man ain’t nothin but a male” could be seen as problematic in 2023.

I think I have heard his voice on TikTok videos. I like this quite a lot.

already heard 7.5/10

This whole album feels like a joke, but it did put a smile on my face. Love the double bass going on with the walking bass lines!

Brilliant album

Makes me smile almost the whole album long. Extra fun if you imagine shooting ghouls while this is playing

for what it is i kinda liked it

What a bop of a record! I'm not really the guy who gets up and dances, but man, do these songs jack me up!! All songs swing like there's no tomorrow, Louis Prima was a fine bandleader, had great charisma, unmatched energy and transformed these songs into something else! Favorite lyrics: - Buona sera, signorina, buona sera. It is time to say goodnight to Napoli. - When your dead and in your grave, no more ravioli will you crave. Key tracks: Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody, (Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby, Oh, Marie, Basin Street Blues / When It's Sleepy Time Down South, Jump, Jive, An' Wail, Buona Sera, Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days, Banana Split For My Baby 7,5 out of 10

Obviously dated but pretty fun.

what a blast, sheer joy

Good vibes all round!

I absolutely loved this. OK, it can lose a point for being all covers.

Good vibes, good times!

Super leuke plaat. Erg blij ook, ze zijn echt een lekker jaren 50 feestje aan het bouwen. 4 sterren.

Sexy vibes

Enjoyed this album a lot. A bit silly, but well played swingin’ pop.

I could have gone through my whole life never hearing this. So glad it came up. It’s an absolute riot!

Superb fun. The Lip and Banana Split for my baby the highlights, but joyous throughout

Kinda listenable, but Karan didn’t love it

Just some ridiculously catchy toe tapping jazz :)

What a fun album, I enjoyed this thoroughly! Especially the livelier tracks full of unhinged noises haha It was a bit much in one go, but having split the listening in two worked quite well! Saved tracks: 'Oh, Marie', 'Jump, Jive, An' Wail' ,'Night Train', 'Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days'

It's christmas eve, feeling generous.

Louis Prima has such an electric charm to him that makes it impossible for me not to get into his music. The songs were original and didn’t blend together. Band played great other a well. Fun album, but nothing too deep. 4/5

Noice.

Coneixia només algunes cançons, i en general l'àlbum m'ha semblat força entretingut.
