classic oldies album. good stuff
Timeless songs you still hear in pop culture today. 4/5.
Not a genre i usually listen to but it was good fun.
I love this. So much to like. Fun, energetic, sexy, musicianship. Another clearly influential album. Top shit from this bastard 4.4
I enjoyed the songs best when they were smashing out the loud freestyle sections. Louis has a great voice. Sax was pretty epic too. What a show if you could hear something like this live today.
What a lovely addition to my Spotify Library...just a different vibe
This was a pretty spicy meat-ah-ball-ah.
It’s cool but I don’t find it different/ahead of its time comparing to other jazz albums in the 60s 3.5
Blistering jump charts with plenty of charm. Surprised by the complete lack of information on this album. Louis Prima was quite the character though.
Great 50's swing from King Louis! The band is red hot and the lyrics and scatting are just fun. Hard to be depressed while listening to this stuff! 4.5⭐️
Joyful and a lot of fun. Like the Vegas showman he became it plays like a live album. Would have loved to see this
This is just a jolly good time and quite a bop. All the voices are unique and charistmatic while the instrumentation keeps a steady pace and sounds grand. The lyrics are actually quite hilarious and I honestly just enjoyed my time with this. An entire album of swing is a bit to much in one go. Still, this is quite an infectious and keeps you rocking with its silly mood.
Warm, joyous and playful
4/5
Super fun!!
Certainly a fun album. Glad I listened, but likely won’t listen to again. Edit: On second thought, this album is awesome! +1 star for being that gorilla from the Jungle Book. Favorite Track: Buona Sera
A short album, but a very enjoyable one. Throughout the record it sounds like Louis and the band are having fun recording these crazy songs and I had fun listening to them.
Just a great way to spend 40 minutes.
Not exactly one's thing and one could quibble with the interpretations of "Basin Street Blues/Sleepytime Down South" but that would be silly, wouldn't it, when he's clearly having some much fun and doing it his way. The band is plenty strong, too, which is to the good. "Just a Gigolo" is an all-time fave – and this version swings plenty well (on part with DLR's version, too). Though it's a bit much at times, but one's happy there are the likes of Louis Primas (and David Lee Roths for that matter) in the world, who seems are happy warriors (of a sort) and brave enough to go all-in on their approach. Rounding up because heard on a day when one needed a smile like this seems designed to produce.
This type of music just makes me think of Christmas
Old timey good time fun.
Growing up in an Italian family, this is kind of music that was always playing at my grandparents' house. Total nostalgia, and I love it! Maybe not my preferred style but definitely a fun listen!
I listened to the "Expanded Edition" of this album and it was so good. I love the vibe of this album and Louis Prima and all the singers are so talented. Even the instrumental songs were so much fun. This album was just a great listen. The lyrics are sometimes silly, but who cares haha. "Jump, Jive, An' Wail" is such a classic. David Lee Roth's version of "Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody" is still soooo much better and over-the-top lol Liked Songs: "Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody" , "(Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby" , "Body And Soul" , "Oh, Marie" , "Basin Street Blues / When It's Sleepy Time Down South" , "Jump, Jive, An' Wail" , "Buona Sera" , "(I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You" , "Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days" , "Banana Split For My Baby" , "Be Mine (Little Baby)"
4 - This is a fun album. Hits my nostalgia vibes. I'm fairly sure I heard some of these songs growing up around my Italian family. Great musicality, vibrant vocals, and the brass bring this album home.
I imagine the list of artists that match or surpass Louis Prima’s enthusiasm and excitement has got to be pretty short. This album is just a party, no downtime, every song keeps you moving. By today’s standards, maybe it’s not too wild, but for the time the title “The Wildest!” was probably appropriate. This isn’t what I typically seek out, but I still love the sound of this time. What a fun album!
This album is very like joyfull vibes gives like 60s sitcom. I like the rythm so I would reccomend this album. Ill give it a 10/10
"Just a gigolo/ I ain't got nobody" was good. I liked the singing voice and the melody. But I thought the lyrics were good. I thought "Body and Soul" wasn't as bad because it was like smooth jazz. Smooth jazz is boring, but I liked the ending. I liked "Jumped, Jive & Wail" because it was fun and energetic. I would recommend this album.
Overall as swing goes I found this very entertaining, due to the energetic live feel. They seem like a band that excels live and I would have loved to have seen it. So if you're conveying that on a record you've achieved something. Whilst entertaining it's not perfect and does dip in places. It really is bordering a three/four here. Think I'll tip to a four as swing albums rarely offer up this level of enjoyment.
A groovy fucking record. Just fully in the pocket all the way through. Will never go without a fat saturated brass solo. Idk enough about trumpets or sax to know where that tone comes from but you know when it sounds like somebody’s been smoking a pack of day right through those tubes? I’m even okay with the scat as era appropriate.
Never heard this album but knew him as a classic jazz trumpeter & those bangers from the Jungle Book This was cool
a fun delight
I love this album. Great sounds some of the lyrics are a bit double ent but still sounds good
This is a fun listen
Amazing music. Classic, catchy, and fun.
A pretty interesting album that I definitely wouldn't have listened to for any other reason. Not something I'll come back to often, but glad I heard it.
Just a really big, fun album. Feels almost cruel that this was picked for me on a Monday, because it really should be heard at maximum volume, at around 10pm after a succession of strong drinks
Wild indeed!
nah i'm actually here for this. the end of the war, gorgy background vibe is super relaxing and cute. the alton towers soundtrack mixed in was a cute surprise
Sympa, pas mon style de base mais j'aime bien son humour
Good fun and nice sounding.
This was a blast. Fun upbeat sound with personality.
good shit
Surprised I knew do many of these songs but didn't know his name. Really good.
sempre divertido ouvir 4,5 estrelas - faltou zooma zooma bacalla :-0
Sweet and short. Very charming performances
Just fun from start to finish. Plus there’s a lot of variety in song choice, vocals, and style. I’m biased, though. I never get tired of hearing King Louie scat. 4/5
This was fun. If your brain doesn’t immediately start bouncing when “Jump, Jive ” comes on you don’t have a pulse. So unlike Diamond Dave not to trick something up, but he actually stays pretty true to the OG in his rendition…
Man this stuff is great. If you don’t jump, jive, wail and even scat a little while listening to this…well…you just ain’t human. Solid memories of watching him as King Louie in The Jungle Book also bring this home for me.
This COOKS. Just like I’ll be cooking the next time I listen to this in the near future. Maybe some carbonara or bolognese maybe. Lots of these tunes are super familiar, but the rest holds up fantastically as well. Loved it.
Just some damn fun music. Will be putting Louis in the mix when I need to get everyone up and moving. Bravo.
I love this shit! Giving me ultimate, “it’s that guy!” energy. Prob would be a 5 bomb if Pennies From Heaven was on this album. Something you put on and after a few minutes everyone is up dancing and having a bitching time. Also, I thought Just a Gigolo was a David Lee Roth original… lulz I’m dumb. 4/5
This is just delightful. Everyone involved in thus sounds like they had a blast and you can hear it in the recording.
This dude was just loads of fun
Im definitvely enjoying this album top to bottom. Since they dont record music like this and its not played in the radio I enjoy it much better and feel it was incredible them and incredible now. Just a few songs that I disnt like so thats the 4 stars but it is a really good listening album
The opening track was very energetic in a raw, exciting way (especially Louis' interaction with the gang vocals in the end). I like his odd, almost conversational singing style, and the big band arrangement is amazing, matching. "(Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby" is a nice contrast, but keeps the energy up (it is softer, but faster); Keely Smith's voice blends perfectly with the style. 'Yip, yip, yip, yip'. Sick double-time section in "Body and Soul", some horn arrangements reminded me of "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady". Nice blend of vocal and instrumental songs. Overall, the album is very nice, but there are a few songs which are not quite as memorable, and sometimes they do blend into each other. However, since it is relatively short, it does not get repetitive.
Excellent 50’s jazz album that makes me envision a room full of men in suites and girls in dresses having a great time in a smoke-filled room in Vegas. Full of fun, joy and bounce. Will definitely be listening again.
Very good sound. The instrumentals were very pleasant and Louis’s voice is great. A good chunk of the songs had the same melody and same overall sound, which got to be a bit much. Def recommend
Great soul in this one. Louis' voice is so distinct and really represents an era of music. The band is great and keeps things lively the whole time. Very fun record.
At first, which happens with random album generators, I was like "no! I don't want to listen to some oldies stuff just now." But honestly? This album made me happy! It is so easy to slip into that "this stuff is old so it can't be that good" mode. It is what we do as a society, never looking back. Truth is this is pretty great and a lot of fun. I want to buy this album for my in-laws now. I think they will really enjoy it and it makes you want to dance a little. Yeah, this is cool, I am glad I listened to it!
Absolutely fun as hell, give me more recommendations like this, anonymous list generator. Best Song: (Nothing's too Good) For My Baby Rating: 7.5 /10 4 Stars
Full band recorded at same time sound. Structured improvising. Energetic and bouncing melody
Goed gezongen met heerlijke melodietjes. Louis speelt ook een aardig partijtje trompet btw. ****
Swinging.
love me some louis p
Приятный и классный джаз
solid
I love its upbeat nature and obviously am a sucker for jazz
Oooh! So fun! very talented musicians and I enjoyed the swing vibe
Good album ,jazzy and upbeat
This was a delightful and fun album. Never would have listened to this without this list.
second album from this artist, some of the same tracks, it's still a nice listen
honking melodically with the full zest of life
Louis Prima... Thank you for making Prima Strategy Guides Roxy — Today at 12:21 PM Okay wait this goes hard "I Ain't Got Nobody" just has so much energy to it, and it using the first song as more of an intro to the vibe of it is stellar. The end pops spectacularly, just the blaring sax and the vocals and just.... Good Shit Good Shit Right There the follow-up song may lean into vibes of "I hit my spouse" but it is what it is. Roxy — Today at 12:30 PM And there's even a little "In Hall of the Mountain King" riff on the instrumental early on... This might be my guy.
it was great, the gigolo I felt the sound of that song new
A little bit blindsided by this album, when it was generated for me I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I have. After the initial confusion around the song Just a Gigolo I found myself smiling throughout the whole album, even going back later to listen to the expanded edition on Spotify, although this rating will only cover the original release track list. The energy captured in this recording is infectious and unwaveringly celebratory. The album conjures a strong mental image of a big vegas casino lounge, room filled with smoke where the drinks are always full and the party doesn’t seem to wind down. The interplay between Prima and his bandmates and guests is extremely endearing and amusing. The playing is technically impressive but very free and natural feeling without even a hint of feeling ad-lib or overly improvisational. The vocals by Prima and guests are very enjoyable and instantly recognisable as many others have pointed out. The lyrics are be full of nonsense and sometimes even hard to make out what is being said. That being said I don’t think I really cared about any of the lyrical minutia during any of the songs outside the first 30 seconds of confusion in the first medley track. All the positives aside there’s not really any major negatives about this album, maybe that it’s a tad one-note and shallow. Not that all albums need to be varied or deep it’s very competent and enjoyable exactly as it is and it doesn’t need to be anything else. Unlikely to be an album I’m spinning whilst working or in the gym I can picture it being an album that I relish returning to when the mood strikes. After a first listen not an incredibly personally defining album but extremely fun.
Oh! What fun album... I really enjoyed it, and I think it has aged extremely well. As others have noted, it sounds like everyone involved was truly enjoying the party. It's not going in my Tidal library, but I feel that it's a strong four-star album.
Great listening. Lots of energy with terrific vocals & musical arrangement. Feel certain this music influenced many artists afterwards.
Very, very classic 50's
Great album
"When you're dead and in your grave, no more ravioli will you crave"
Lækker jazz!!
Loved it. Nice change of pace, always try and imagine life back then.
Nice sweet oldie tune
Fun fun fun
Just swing jazz played with a smile and no pretentions! The vocals and harmonies are great and that gravelly voice just works for prima (you might think he is copying Armstrong if he wasn't working at the same time), you can see why he was used as the king of the swingers in The Jungle Book. Trumpet playing is pretty good too with some awesome interactions with the rest of the horns. A fun album with some serious music-playing.
jazz vibes big throwback but a lot of classics i quite enjoy. beautiful voices and music.
Good album, feels classic.
Amusing and 100% enjoyable album. Never have I intentionally out on a single song from this album, but through covers and soundtrack appearances, I knew basically all of the tracks. Really a fun listen.
This is the music that bugs bunny in a dress puts on while making some strong cocktails. Raunchy horns, goofy vocals, wildly energetic performances - all good fun.
Canciones a destacar: For My Baby Medley Body and Soul Jump, Jive, An' Wail (por el solo de teclado)
This surprised me a ton. It’s very Swing Jazz with a little humour in there. It’s just has a great old time feel and the songs you start singing along with. Yeah it’s a little dated and cheesy but it doesn’t take away from the songs and there charm 4/5
Lots of fun
Love the upbeat sound of this album!
nice for xmas vibes
Not bad, I liked the vibe
Yeah I love this shit. Short, sweet, and fun.
Early dis tracks? This album was entertaining. And catchy. I'd listen again
He knows how to not take himself too seriously, write a quirky song, and direct the brass section. Just an insanely fun album to listen to.
Can’t go wrong, Prima was an iconic bandleader and performer and these songs are so fun
I really only know Louis Prima from the voice of King Louie in Jungle Book and Dave Lee Roth's cover of Prima's Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody medley but this album is a fun collection of jump jive jazz. Gigolo/Nobody opens the set and is great fun and, while the rest of the album is not quite as good, tracks like Oh, Marie and Jump, Jive An' Wail come close, Prima's Louis Armstrong-like scatting perfectly complimented by his (20 years younger) wife, Keely Smith's sweet voice. 32 minutes of enjoyment from almost 70 years ago.
4 Classics hold up and it's impossible not to get in a good mood.
Swinging jazz. At its best when the band lets rip with the stomping up-tempo parts. Have heard it before and will listen to it again. Almost 5 - brilliantly delivered, fun tunes but too 'safe' for full marks.
I love 50s music
Quite liked this sound
I just don't like jazz I've said. I just don't get jazz I've said. Well, I'll be. This is just a great time. And it's jazz you say?
Kung Louis! Jag gillar dramatisk storbandsjazz
I had no idea Jump, Jive, An' Wail was a cover and honestly the original really is better! I found a lot of the songs humorous and that mixed with the general upbeat intensity of the album made for a fun listen!
Jazz, old English style
I love Louis Prima. Keep some of these as favorites.
I was kinda dreading listening to this based off of judging the album cover, but I really really enjoyed this! Phenomenal saxophone. Banana Split for my Baby was weird as fuck tho
4.5/5. This feels like you're listening to it live, even though it was released in 1956. Realised halfway through that he's the iconic voice of King Louie in the original Jungle Book. Toe-tappers from start to finish.
Jazzy swing, good fun
A nice swingy feel
A memorable ensemble who's chemistry flows so damn well with each other. An all-around good time.
现在的心境听不了soul了
One of the most “sounds like a party” albums I’ve heard yet. And it’s a party you’d want to be at!
Fun, jolly album that I would never put on, but I wouldn't mind if somebody put it on for me.
Louis Prima was an interesting fellow. He genre chased to stay relevant for his whole career. This hit in his Vegas years, and is probably his best album. Definitely his most well-received album. It's honestly a really fun listen. It has phenomenal energy throughout, and though I'm not certain there's truly a standout track or two, it just is a really solid swing album that's a pretty enjoyable experience.
Some repetitive instrumentation throughout album and from other albums of his. He was probably mainly responsible for vocals but still considering it as whole piece
Exactly what we're here for. I knew king louie of course, had heard brian setzers jump jive and, but had no idea, about this. So many pasta references. So silly and chaotic. Not on the album but felicia capice is a gem.
King Louie! I know it's a little hokey, but I love this album. So many classics, and it's just fun.
Just a jizzy jazzy party, riffs and riffing, sax and sex.
Chill. If I owned a cafe this would be on repeat!
Surprised on how many song I knew on the album. Some really good classics on here.
I have a real aversion to 50s big bandish swingish type stuff. Turns out if it has some human spirit (is far enough away from the Rat Pack), it can really frickin rock.
3.5
Pretty iconic stuff. It’s King Louie!
Megga boppy can't wait to play it for the kids.
Pure swing energy!
Love a Louis Prima Album. Loved him as King Louie in The Jungle Book. A unique sound in the swing era.
Pretty enjoyable. Really enjoyed the instrumentals.
Loving some jungle book core
New Orleans own Louis Prima! I enjoyed it quite a bit, big throwback.
Can’t help but tap your toes/imagine swing dancing to this. Surprised by how many songs I knew despite not recognising the name. Loved Keely Smith’s voice, too. Wasn’t expecting a diss track but ‘You Rascal’ maintains the jolly feel of the album despite the death wishes in the lyrics.
Man, I can be cynical, but stuff like this just melts my cold heart and makes me smile. The joyousness is infectious. Everyone involved seems to be having a blast.
horniest record ive heard in a hot minute
Light and fun! No horrific complex stuff going on, easy listening for an upbeat day. Wouldn't listen to it more than once every couple of months though
Jump up and down feel good swing jazz. Really enjoyed it. At first I wasn’t enthusiastic but changed my tune during the first track. Vocals are superb and the band is tight. No skips on this one!
Louis Prima is probably best known as the voice of King Louis in The Jungle Book, but this album from 1956 is equally joyous. The album was recorded as live in the studio with an excellent group of jazz musicians, who are clearly having a ball, as well as Prima’s wife Keely Smith who provides a cool counterbalance to his wild flights of fancy. It’s a brisk 30 minutes of fun and one of the rare albums where I listened twice. Highlight is opener Just a Gigolo!
That was a lot of fun. I realized that I knew at least a couple of songs, of course the obvious "I"m just a gigolo" but also "Buona Sera", thanks to Treme TV series. Not necessarily my favourite subgenre of jazz, but I spent a good time listening to it.
++: Medley: Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody (and Nobody Cares for Me), (Nothings Too Good) For My Baby, Medley: Basin Street Blues / when It's Sleepy Time Down South, Jump, Jive an' Wail, Night Train +: The Lip, Body and Soul, Oh Marie, Bouona Sera, (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You 7,9/10
Lovely and classic! Very fun listen, especially the Gigalo song which made me realize David Lee Roth wasn't the original artist, lol.
This was never on my radar, but I loved it. No one makes music like this any more. It really makes me appreciate the recordings we do have. I wonder how much great music was lost before it was preserved.
Just flat out fun, not a lot of dull moments and a good swing sound
Some great jazz combo standards! Louis Prima’s voice has a bright and unique sound that shines on this collection.
Good stuff, fun and not at all serious. King Louie!
meh, oldies are classics, can you really hate them? to me it sounded like wanna be louie armsrongs....
kinda afraid this has pre-emptively ruined any other 50s trad pop albums i might roll in comparison! absolutely covered in sparkles and giggles, a great swing band teams up with a gravitatious singer and trumpet player to create a fleeting and fluid set of tracks that carry so much character and charisma , humor often thru pure energy that has to go Somewhere as prima makes silly expressive noises with his voice even before u get to the scatting. simply the Sound Of Entertainment or whatever! comfy party vibes off the charts
I loved it, I picture walking around New Orleans
Great Olive Garden soundtrack
Some nice and enjoyable uptempo swing Louis has a nice voice for this stuff, and I particularly enjoyed the jokes in the lyrics when they occurred. 'The Lip' is both an interesting song, but also just a silly joke of a story, and that made it really enjoyable for me. Some of the other stuff was nice, but also a bit forgettable at times Standouts Just A Gigolo The Lip Jump, Jive, An' Wail 4/5
The Wildest! is a blend of New Orleans style jazz and swing, with a tad bit of early rock and roll blended in. The results is a raucous, fervent, and at times risqué style of jazz that is just pure fun. Prima’s trumpet combined with backing sax and piano makes me want to get up and dance throughout the entire album. Prima’s voice is not to my taste, though it is very fitting of the times. Wife Keely Smith’s voice is much more pleasant and compliments Prima’s, though her vocals are used sparingly. Even listening to the 2002 remastered version, the mixing / mastering are a bit off for my preferences. Overall, a very good album and a fun representation of late (1950s) New Orleans Jazz. 8.6/10
It’s just so boppy!
Good collection of standards and songs I haven't heard before. Love the female voice on a few of the tracks.
Charming and fun bops from the king of the swingers, the jungle VIP himself. Manages to simultaneously get the juices flowing and soothe my worries, with that comforting 'warm jumper' feeling that (good) old-timey music can often provide.
man I fuck with this lol it's a ton of fun
Love the passion for his meatballs.
A whole lot to like on this one: the music is joyous and energetic; the lyrics are a lot of fun and are a great fit with Prima's distinct voice and style; the humor works; and Keely Smith sounds great as well. "You took advantage of my hospitality and ate all my ravioli, so I can't wait to celebrate at your funeral" is the song theme I didn't know I was missing, but we've all been there. Ten minutes of extra tracks were added in the 2002 reissue - the highlight being the goofy "Banana Split for My Baby" - but even with those extras, I could stand to have this thing go a little longer. Just a little short of being a 5 for me, but it's a great album.
Great fun
Fantastic jazz/big band album! Love this selection
This is a lot of fun. I imagine getting drunk and dancing to this in the 60s would have been the thing of dreams
What a wild album(and don't give me any Lip). I had a bit too much fun scattin' on a Monday morning. Favorite Song: "The Lip".
A big thank you for such a lovely and enjoyable journey throughout the entire album 😊
Can't help but listen to this with a smile. Didn't know what to expect but I had a foot tapping good time. I don't think I'll listen to this a lot but I hope tob remember to give it another go sometime. 7/10
Solid sound, really clever songs, I enjoyed it.
At first it felt I little like I was listening to something in a museum. After a while though, I started to enjoy this and, on a second listen, I had a lot of lovely fun.
Excellent performances, very fun songs and overall very entertaining and upbeat album
Kellemesen vidám káosz.
10/10. This is th best to date
Just a Gigolo bridges the gap between those that don’t want anything to do with jazz and those that like jazz. I’m assuming this is jazz. I can handle the jazz with singing. The purely instrumental stuff, though it’s good, reminds me of Tom and Jerry or some old timey cartoon. I, for once, can’t pretend what I know the next person to listen to this album is going to like. I say listen to this and try not to enjoy it. I won’t be going back to this but maybe I will delve more into other albums by Louis Prima. Choice cut: Just a Gigolo
A fun time
Fun!!
40 minutes of pure energy. Do not try to steal this man's meatballs.
Really fun album, so bombastic. Has a live energy that is cool.
It’s King Louis from Jungle Book! While listening to this, I suddenly felt like I was dancing with Lea Thompson at the school dance in Back to the Future. The song Night Train is a classic in the swing and vocal jazz world. Overall, I really enjoyed this entire album and I’m sorry, knowing I hadn’t known that Louis Prima had a career outside of Disney. I’m actually this one for my wife. She will absolutely adore this. This is definitely a listen again.
I really wish Louis Prima had been around for David Lee Roth's version of Just a Gigolo or the the Brian Setzer Orchestra's Jump Jive An' Wail. That previous sentence imparts the impact and fun Prima's music had on the world. Fun is the right word. While it probably was some of the very first genre-bending mix of rock, jazz, and blues; it most definitely wasn't last.
This was enjoyable as hell. Put this on when you're cookin' and HOT DAMN.
King Louis for sure! This whole album is tremendous.
This might be a brand new sentence, but goddamn does this big band music go hard.
Back when 'Murica was great
Scat everywhere. Get a broom.
king of the swingers
Good ass fun 7/10
I mean, the title’s not wrong! The slower, slinkier songs are perfectly sequenced among the faster numbers, and Prima and his then-wife Keely Smith make a hell of a vocal team.
very lively and colorful! fun listen.
Surprisingly, I recognized several songs. Some very good stuff and I like the upbeat, happy vibe of the album.
This album is a total blast! Louis Prima's energy is infectious, and his band rocks. If you love jazz, swing, or just want to have a good time, this is the album for you.
Really solid swing jazz kinda thing. I recognised the voice, turns out it's the monkey from Jungle book.
50s to 60s music feels like such a dramatic shift. In the context of the 50s, this is super fun. I want to learn to dance to this. And as a Fallout fan, this has those vibes. The trumpeting is also great in this album. Silly lyrics all around. 4* Highlights: I'll be glad when you're dead
nice !
Funsies
Pretty wild, maybe not THE wildest. Solid tho.
Fantastic!
bardzo przyjemny spoko album klasyki jazzowe czy coś 8/10
Fun album.
Not my cup of tea - but the trumpet playing is very good and it's got just a giggalo on it
Gefällt mir sehr gut. Zeitlos.
I really enjoyed this.
Influential doesn't cover it here. I am not a fan but this record has spawned a lot of other music.
Swinging'mama i like it
Not bad at all.
Good stuff - used to hear it all the time working in the restaurants
I love this. Immediate nostalgia (for a time I wasn't alive... ). Smooth, fun, and makes me want to dance. So much fun!
A really fun record. Seems like it would have been the music at the cool parties in 1956.
Really energetic and enjoyable listen 4/5
I wanna wear a suit that's too big for me and dance to this
Gosh, I didn’t know his name at all, even though I recognized some songs and his voice. Keely Smith was also new to me. As a fan of the Andrews Sisters, this was right up my alley. So fun and expertly mixed and produced. Will definitely add this one to the swing rotation. 4.5
Prima's got a great voice for this music -- a little rough around the edges with a touch of schmaltz (it's a perfect fit for a David Lee Ross cover). The moderate tempo songs are good, but those fast swinging numbers really cook. The boogie piano sounds so good and the sax and trombone are downright filthy. 4.7
the lyrics on some of these songs are crazy but I really like how the songs sound 4/5
I love 50s music, always makes me think of fallout. Big brass, lively music, classic blues riffs - super fun
Wow! Had no experience with Louis Prima before coming in, other than his hits. I was struck by how electric and *fun* the performances on here are. They're really, really tight instrumentally but wild and free, and Louis' huge personality and charisma carries most of the tracks. I feel more connected with him than I feel with Sinatra, if I'm honest, or most of the crooners that always feel like they're barely disguising a little smirk at their audience. Louis Prima feels genuine, funny, big, warm, crass. I took to him immediately. I'm going for a 4, for a charismatic artist and utterly fantastic, perfect performances from the players here! 4/5
I enjoyed it
Honestly that was a lot of fun
This is a vibe album. Fast paced and so old school. Best Song: Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody
Shoutout the Jungle Book.
Enjoyable. Not heard before
Nice.
Fun stuff!
Great, fun singer from the 50’s and 60’s. Great songs that are forever favorites. Need more singers and music like this today.
This is a right laugh. Like a Christmas party straight from BTTF.
What a fun listen! This included some nostalgic hits and was a great mood boost.
Was not expecting to like this one. Turned out to be a great album with many catchy songs and fun, fast jazz instrumentation. Favorites: The Lip (I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead) You Rascal You Banana Split for My Baby
I mean, it's louis prima.
Oh yes. I have definitely heard of this. This is awesome. I really enjoy this style of music.
I liked it more than I thought I would. I think this guy has influenced a few people.
Just s generally fun album. I do not have any playlist for 50s music. Do not know where to add this.
I have heard so many of his songs but had no idea who he was lol.
Really enjoyed this
Lotta fun. The recording is a little rough but there's a lot of energy and charm to this album. Louis Prima is effortlessly magnanimous and I just love the spirit of swing channeling through this. Best Track: I'm Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody Worst Track: Whistle Stop
This is a bopper!
Great album! This later era Prima, and you can hear a lot of his big band and swing past influencing this jump jazz sound. Upbeat tempos, bright brass, and Prima’s signature vocal delivery make this album really easy to get through and keep you tapping your feet the whole time. It’s a feel good album for sure
Listened to a lot of his music growing up. Liked each song on the album. Will listen again
I really enjoyed this. Upbeat, big band swing coupled with King Louie singing and playing trumpet.
Back when guitars were guitars and men were men, there was this screaming hot band leader named Louis Prima that owned the stages of an upstart American gambling town known as Las Vegas. Along with Keely Smith, Sam Butera and his shining band of misfits, this bunch made music that held audiences in amazement. I'm so glad to listen to this album again today, it's been too long. 4 stars. PS Wiki just told me that Louis Prima was also the voice of the orangutan King Louie in Disney's Jungle Book. I hadn't put that together until today.
Listening to this I can see the neon lights on Fremont Street and hear the slot machines dinging in the background. I don't listen to much swing, but this was really fun.
That was so fun.
I liked this a lot. I know Louis Prima as King Louis in Jungle Book, and feel like I heard a few of the songs on this album, but never connected the dots. Keely Smith (Prima's wife at the time) sounds great, and Louis' trumpet playing is very cool. Nice relaxing listen while I worked. Lots of good tracks including " Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody (and Nobody Cares for Me)", "Buona Sera", and "Jump, Jive, an' Wail".
Loved this. A really happy surprise.
Really great. I had not heard any Louis Prima before. Will be adding to my collection.
I've always liked Louis Prima, he's crazy and fun. But a whole album seems like a lot this morning. Go figure. Always liked him best with Keely Smith. 4 stars
Pure music. Pure joy. The horns! And clever lyrics. A classic for good reason
Very enjoyable - it's easy to imagine the musicians really enjoying themselves.
A fun jazz album. A lot of other jazz hasn’t really hit with me, but this was up tempo and I enjoyed it a lot.
Classic
2nd half very cool and instrumental, also perks of being a wallflower movie of my youthhhh
Innovated and explosive fun.
Fun jazz
Thoughts before listening: I believe this is jazz, and more specifically swing from the 40s or 50s probably. Assuming thats correct, I mainly know swing from the 90s revival of bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the Cherry Poppin Daddies, and the Brian Setzer Orchestra. That scene's connections to the punk and ska scene meant that I was actually somewhat into those bands and saw a few of them live at Warped Tour or opening for others. Anyway, I think this will be my first time knowingly listening to Louis Prima. Review: Ok so this is some of the most timeless music of all time. One of those that you've heard your whole life without actually realizing you were listening to Louis Prima. "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody", which opens the album, is a perfect example. Both songs in the melody are instantly recognizable...and both great. The horns are so distinctive in this sound, playing riffs and adding texture throughout, accompanying Louis Prima's voice which scats as much as it sings. Really fun listen. 4 stars.
Absolutely wonderful and stupendous record. Treading a line between jazz, blues and swing requires a lot of quality which this is able to match.
A fun ride if not a little silly. The intense beef over meatballs is incredible. Fav Songs: Buona Sera, (I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead) You Rascal You, & Banana Split For My Baby.
Joyful and unique, great energy.
Music to listen to when you are rushing to clean your house for guests.
Really fun, energetic.
Such classic jazzy deliciousness! Never knew this man exiseted and I’m so excited to have come across him.
That was kinda fun!
Oh Boy - what fun! From track 1 straight on. You know most of these songs right off - never thought to look up the album, but here it is! Can't believe this is over 60 years old - - -
Good fun raunchy romp big band and a little rock and roll. Enjoyed this one.
Never listened to Louis before but know many of these songs. Super fun record in the spirit of a Louis Jordan record with some great singing and playing.
Enjoyed this a lot. Awesome high energy performances from the dawn of rock.
At first I was like well this sounds like most of the 50s records I hear all the time, but by the end my mood got so much better. Thank you sir for the great music.
Breathlessly joyful
Pretty wild for the 50s. Enjoyed the more upbeat songs. Some weaker slower subs but I enjoyed it overall.
Reminded me of fallout, jumping and jiving
Excellent.
I always forget that I have heard this before. Louis Prima is fun its jazzy its rock its pop it is exciting every song feels like a hug and a fun party I do not want to stop. This is exactly what music is supposed to be enjoy it.
4.3 - Loved this! Do think it got a bit too samey towards the end
Men over til albumet spesifikt.
While not exactly pushing intellectual boundaries, sometimes it’s nice to simply sit back and enjoy a record where an artist is having a blast doing their thing, and Prima’s an irresistible bundle of energy. That’s not to say this record is devoid of artistic value — try wry humor is an element that’s unconventional, and guest appearances are appropriate and impactful. I mean, and song about making banana splits??? What more could you want! listened to: walking in prospect park. Favorite tracks: Body and Soul, Buona Sera, I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead, Banana Split for My Baby
"joyous, rumbustious, and irresistible. . .a raunchy mix of demented gibberish, blaring sax, and explosive swing" Bobby Morris's drumming/fast shuffles are killer
First song legendary. Extremely well known voice I like the instrumental body and soul Basin street sounds like gigolo to start lol jump jive and wail also legendary. Nightrain also instrumental? I’ll be glad when you’re dead is a hell of a title. Band wails Fun album. Bet this was an absolute blast in the 50s
I actually totally dig this old stuff.
Just A Gigolo (I Ain't Got Nobody) Body and Soul Oh Marie Jump, Jive and Wail
4.5
Prima's got that legendary swing voice.
hullunkurisuutta. ykeisö varmasti nauraa ja taputtaa samaan aikaan suu auki HAH HAH HAH ja kädet läpsyttää yhteen... can you believe this guy... crazy guy... villiä! villiintynyt!!! villein veikko tällä puolen mississippiä... jaa siitä voidaan olla varma. hauskaa kuunneltavaa alusta loppuun saakka vaikka ei mitään housuja hampaista vetänyt niin kyllä hyvin tämä on tehty... ja kuulostaaakim hyvältä 50luvun perseilylle myöskin. jatkuu parhaana vuosikkymenenä heh... body and soul
Louis Prima- What a unique voice. It’s fun and easy listening. Definitely an album to pop in the record player Saturday morning.
It's jumpn. It's swingin. I love jazz with this kind of energy and great horns. Long before David Lee Roth was gigaloing, Louis Prima had noooooobody. Love the super fast tempo on Marie and Be Glad When You're Dead. Gotta admit I like Louis Armstrong's version of Be Glad When U R Dead a bit better but Louis Prima throws down some great trumpet in this version. The banana split song is cute. Good mix of songs.
A swinging good time! Great for cocktail parties, and cooking, and getting your man’s coffee ready for him in the morning before he goes off to the office for a hard days work, and putting on your lipstick to go out to make a visit to your meat man.
So much fun! So upbeat. The trombone on Body and Soul is outstanding! Liked songs added: - Just a Gigilo/I Ain't Got Nobody -Medley - Jump, Jive an' Wail
A fun one, and his voice is a classic. I think this hits a certain vibe/era extremely well.
Loved this
To paraphrase Goodfellas, “Fridays were for Louis Prima. Saturdays were for Sinatra” I love Louis and every one of his identical sounding songs with their identical sounding, “bah ba-nah ba-bah baaanuhhh” outros. He’s so eternally wonderful.
A classic record and a pretty appropriate one to get on a Friday morning. Enjoyed listening to these classic standards.
Fun!
Good classic oldies
Louis Prima sings that song from Elf (Pennies from Heaven) (Sunsets and ravioli, MACARONI). This is super jazzy and fun. Robyn will like.
It has pizazz, that's the word.
5This album just sounds like everybody recording it had a ball and it shows.
Almost a five, but I wish the energy from the first song was maintained throughout, and it can feel a bit repetitive at times. The style is cool as hell, and you can't listen to it without a smile. It's the closest thing to reliving the Golden Age of 1940s/50s Las Vegas 02/05/24
Just a simple but great collection of quick, jazzy love songs that make you want to get up and dance.
A really enjoyable and modern listening experience, a classic 50’s to encounter at least 1 time in your lifetime
Solid, loved King Louie’s voice as a kid
4.2
Album #200, and out of left field we get a '50s swing jazz album. I have no clue what to think about this really. This review is straight vibes-based, but I enjoyed this a lot. Louis Prima is talented, it's fun and upbeat, he's pretty funny throughout in a ridiculous way, Keely Smith has a nice voice. I don't know, it just works for me. Will I come back to it often? Probably not. But it was fun and that's something. Favorite song: Buona Sera Other: Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody, (Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby, Oh Marie, Basin Street Blues / When It's Sleepy Time Down South, Jump Jive An' Wail, I'll Be Glad When You're Dead (You Rascal You), Five Months Two Weeks Two Days, Banana Split For My Baby 4/24/24
Amazing and influential album with excellent musicians tearing up their solo’s. Very fun! A few tracks are duds though, holding this album back at times. 4/5
A lot of timeless classics on here. This is something that belongs on this list. Great 4 star album. Has a few misses, but the greats are greats.
Really hard to compare albums from this far back to modern stuff. Feels like a completely different medium of entertainment. Fun listen, and it's nice to have a glimpse into the past like this.
I always knew Van Halen's version of Just A Gigolo was a cover, but never heard this original. Catchy damned song with a nice swing atmosphere. Did not know Jump, Jive, An' Wail was a cover... This is a weird one that I know from an old Brian Setzer album that my mom used to play all the time. His cover was pretty true to form, but I actually far prefer the aura of this original. Not something I would play in the foreground (unless I really wanted to tap into an early Vegas vibe) but I appreciated it nonetheless. The songs had nice energy with strong vocals, some great sax work (Buona Sera), some twinkling keys (Night Train), and some catchy tunes (Just A Gigolo and Jump, Jive, An' Wail). For what it is, I think it was more up than down so I'll nudge it to a soft 4.
