Reviews (page 3 of 13)

I grew up with this :p

Fantastic jazz/blues from the man who was the voice of King Louis of the Apes in The Jungle Book. This album could be featured on Fallout for sure. Has that kinda feel to it. Keely Smith and Sam Butera do phenomenal supporting work as well. Favourite songs: "Jump, Jive, An' Wail", "Oh, Marie", (Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby, Be Mine (Little Baby), The Lip, Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody, (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You, "Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days", Buona Sera, Banana Split For My Baby, Basin Street Blues/When It's Sleepy Time Down South, Whistle Stop Least favourite songs: Night Train 5/5

Christmassy

This is uncomprehendingly incomparingly magnificent. By this I mean I don't know why but you can't compare this with anything by today's standards. Simply timeless.

Fantastic album!

Not from my era, but fun.

Superb. So much fun. FAVS: Nothing’s Too Good For My Baby, Basin Street Blues, The Lip

Fun stuff. Can't believe I haven't listened to him before other than Jungle Book

This was a really good album that I probably wouldn’t have found on my own. Of course, I’ve heard “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” before, but I never really looked into it further. It turns out, the whole album is just as good. It’s a blend of swing, jump blues, and jazz. Swing isn’t something I know much about, and I didn’t even know jump blues existed until now. This album feels like a great starting point to explore more of Louis Prima’s catalog.

sly, smart and swinging - vibrant, energised, rocking joy

I think all music artists should recreate this album cover for one of their own albums

Swing when you're winning. Taking me back to the old sweaty swingy New York, oh the good old times of misogyny and trumpets. Where everything was black and white and joyous. I guess you need to have fun post war. All things considered, this was a fun listen and I'm glad I did!

Life's a bitch and then you die, but sometimes you get to improvise a song and do a little scat break in the style of Louis Prima while you're cleaning the kitchen and it makes things a little better. I can't recommend it highly enough. I probably jam to, or in the style of, Louis Prima more often than the typical millenial but I have never listened to this album before. He's just having so much fun with his wife and his band making funny upbeat tunes - what's not to love!? (My usual go to Louis tunes for a scat break moment are Pennies From Heaven, That Old Black Magic, and of course I Wanna Be Like You)

Such a fun album.

Jede Menge Evergreens, einfach fantastisch.

You always hear people say "they don't make music like they used to" and I think this album embodies that. I would first like to say that their isn't anything wrong with modern music and we don't need to be making music the same way. But this album has a timeless charm that is different from what is being made in music today. Louis Prima is a fantasictally unique voice, and paired with the upbeat tempos and trumpets, it's incredible. Every song had me grooving and I will definitely be back for more.

They don’t make music like this anymore.

Amazing

I love this music. It makes me want to be there in person when this was recorded. I just love when live music is high energy and fun. You knokw, music that makes you want to smile and move your body. That's what this is. I have no idea what he was talking about most of the album and that's okay.

Includes both lindy hoppable and shaggable tracks

I only got through a quarter of the album. But I loved every damn minute

ABRIENDO EL DISCO CON UN PUTO TEMAZO, fuego, de lo mejor en swing ong

pure happiness in album form

Roots big band and nostalgia. Easily listenable and great for a light hearted afternoon.

King Louie!

Joyful noise!

This albums sounds like a party and I would much rather be there than work. Nobody knows what time it is and that isn't important.

An absolute delight. I love Louis’s unique voice and charisma. So charming!

A stellar album! Louis Prima is one of those artists you know the songs but may not know the artist. Just fun swing music that gets you moving

Weird first impression , but I remember how this album SMELLS Also , love the music. Recognize his voice and finally at age 60 I put two and together about jungle book , etc.

Fantastic album with fun tracks to listen to. It never feels like it's too long or even too short, there's just so much fun to be had with the songs and the swing feel that accompanies it. An energetic album with fantastic vocals from both Louis Prima and Keely Smith and the enjoyable instrumentals from Sam Butera & The Witnesses. An easy 5/5 for me.

DOOBIE DOOBIE

Pretty great

Top-20 album, in my opinion. What's not to love about a little swing every now and again? And, only today realized that "Night Train" is the song being played in Back to the Future right before Marty digs into "Johnny B Good"! Buona sera, good night!

Wild Swing, let's go!!!

Prima record! Try not having a good time listening to this, you rascal you.

Instant favorite, can't wait to learn to Lindy Hop to dance on it

This album was fun! Didn't know how many Louis Prima songs I knew. It was an infectious, wild 50s party start to finish. Everyone in the studio was feeling it and the musicians were hot. Saved songs: - jump, jive, an wail - oh, Marie - just a gigalo/I ain't got nobody

Great album!

Not something I normally listen to but maybe I should. Very fun album

A fellow Pizon <3

This cat flat-out rocked. One of the all-time greats. And it's hard to top Keely Smith's voice.

eddigi legjobb album amit eddig nem ismertem

Finally some good stuff! What a fun record. Extreme classic sounds here, great 60 years later. Is it swing? Yeah but it’s ORIGINAL swing so it’s fine. Starts off with a bang with Just A Gigolo, an absolute BANGER. It doesn’t stop with the next few tracks either, just some good ass music. There’s a lot of duets here too with Keely Smith, who I never heard of, but she’s got some PIPES. The big band sound is front and center here with some masterful brass solos. You’ve heard most of these songs before. If you care about music at all, you have. But this is absolutely joyful and fun music that deserves to be on this list.

Forget Ozzy Osbourne, Henry Rollins or Iggy Pop. This man is the real madman! The wildest!

J’ai adoré cet album, superbes voix, interprétation ludique, arrangements succulents

This was amazing! A bunch of songs that I had heard throughout my many decades but never within the context of the original album. Definitely going to be in the permanent collection that gets played on shuffle on my phone.

Apt title. Swinging jazz and blues with a heavy dose of humor. Very entertaining.

Absolute banger all the way through

You can’t listen to the album and be in a bad mood. If you’re a fan of Louis Armstrong then this slaps.

Ein schwungvolles, wunderbares Album mit hervorragenden Musikern und Sänger. Das macht Spaß. Top

Really solid album. Interesting, energetic and a great listen.

Jazz. Big Band. Beautiful music and vocals. Love it.

Good-mood maker. Jazzy, every track a bop

I like the cover 😂 It's certainly true to the title in regards to the lyrics and music. This was surely the music of those old rebels without a cause of yore 😎 Old school cool but not like Grease or those Old Navy commercials, more like the car culture and gang fights. #7 Jump, Jive, An' Wail I've heard in a commercial somewhere. #1 is a great start as usual with old albums. Certainly a runner up for an entrance song 😂 #12 is an awesome Valentine's song but by far the funniest is #10 with a bang! It's a fun album for sure.

Love this one. So fun and classic. Takes me back to the jungle book

As something other than a straight white dude, I very rarely experience something that makes me long for an earlier time and place. This makes me sorry that I wasn't in a New Orleans club in the 1950s swinging away. Happy, energetic, so much brass, and beautiful voices.

Better impossible!

OK, stuck in the 50's the past couple of days, but it's turning out to be quite the treat. This was a whole vibe, and I dig it. There are songs on this album I've heard throughout the years, in the background of other media I've consumed (movies, etc). Just fantastic all around. Even the instrumental pieces are fantastic. I'll definitely be exploring more Louis Prima.

Album 419 of 1001 Louis Prima - The Wildest! Rating : 5 / 5 I've been waiting for this one. Chronologically, this was the 3rd album on the list of 1001. Since I first listened to it over a year ago, it has become a quick favorite . I have a canvas of this cover proudly hung on my bedroom wall. A couple of tracks are on my 'most repeated' list and I go to them quite regularly. A mix of great musicianship, writing and personality. Wish I had been in Vegas in the 50s to catch his show. He and his wife, Keely Smith, are a fun pair who are obviously having a great time as they perform. The great horn playing is just a bonus. Very talented band by his side. Highly recommend if you a jazz fan or if you're just looking for something new and fun. Note: You may remember Louis Prima as the voice for the orangutang in Jungle Book who sang 'I Wanna Be Like You".

Louis Prima's The Wildest! exudes an undeniable charm and playfulness that's hard to resist. Prima's charisma and infectious energy permeate each track, infusing the album with a sense of joy and liveliness. From the swinging rhythms to the lively horn arrangements, every element comes together to create an irresistibly fun listening experience. Tracks like Jump, Jive an' Wail and Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody showcase Prima's knack for blending jazz, swing, and rhythm and blues into a seamless fusion of sound. Overall, The Wildest! is a delightful romp through the musical stylings of a true entertainer, making it a great addition to any collection. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 9 STAND OUT TRACK - Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody

Now THIS is a 5-star album!!!

Every single song on this album is a banger. No skips.

This is a great album that should be experienced by everyone at least once. It's absolutely a joy to listen to.

Loved this! Musically interesting, incredible vibes and great humoured.

Classic album. Loved it .

This was a fun one! I wanted to get up and dance multiple times. Love the trumpets and just going to it with the jazz and blues influence. I love listening to it and thinking how 'wild' this was back then!

I love this. I’m a big fan of Louis Armstrong, and it’s clear this Louis was heavily influenced by him. Really fun jazz, this is the New Orleans vibe I am all about. (Sorry, Dr. John)

I had just about given up on this list when it hands me this gem. This kind of surprise is why I’m here—fabulous music I didn’t know I couldn’t live without. Super fun album where they are all having a great time!

Positively entertaining!

Funny, energetic recording of Prima's legendary live show. It's loose and irreverent, uptempo and hilarious. Prima takes liberties with his own material and jazz standards to create a raucous big band experience that leans towards the coming RnB.

An invaluable lesson I’ve learned from this project is that pop music will never be hornier than it was in the fifties, as evidenced by this album where you hear King Louie from The Jungle Book achieve orgasm no less than a dozen times over 32 minutes. Five stars.

Oh, this one's just a blast. There's really nothing else to it—it aims to be swingin' fun and it sure as hell is. It's downright infectuous how clear it is how much everyone recording this is enjoying themselves. It makes me look forward to when/if my group gets more swing music like this. And in the meantime, I guess I'll spin this album again.

Surprisingly, a 5. Well, OK, maybe not that surprising, but for the earliest album we’ve gotten so far to get this out of me is a little surprising to me. It’s just a really fun listen. Louis Prima’s voice and tone has this great energy that gets matched by the band, and on the two tracks that have Keely Smith as the female vocalist, his voice blends really well with hers. Ultimately, what makes this album is Louis Prima’s vocal energy; yes, the lyrics are there, and they’re pretty solid, but you don’t need them to enjoy this. This is just really fun swing music; it’s a good time, it’s a great listen, and I think the amount of infectious energy it gives out makes it very worthy of a 5. Certainly no less than a 4, at least to me.

Wonderful 50s jazz-blues singer

5 I don't want to set the world on fire-ah album Unironically, not bad. The Lip and Oh, Marie are standouts--great tone and jazzy style. For a 50's album, great audio quality.

This album has so much charm to it. It sounds like everybody was having fun! The catchy tunes with Louis Prima’s voice is a great combination. Excellent record that’s fun to listen to. I’d recommend! Very cool.

I used to listen to jump jive as a kid, this also goes perfectly with the fallout kick im on rn

The cream of the crop. Amazing track list, amazing time listening to it. Nothing out of place, just beautiful and fun music. Light, meaningful, endearing. Standouts: Just A Gigalo/I Ain’t Got Nobody, Body and Soul, Oh, Marie, Basin Street Blues/When It’s Sleepy Time…, and Buona Sera.

This album is an absolue classic. Every song gives off massive good vives, and it feels like everyone working on this album is having the time of their lives. Even the more ridiculous songs like "(I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You" work because of Louis' infectious energy (plus it's funny how he giggles to himself partway through it). I had a huge smile on my face the whole way through, and if you hate this album, you might want to see a therapist. Best Song: Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody Worst Song: Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days Underrated Gem: Whistle Stop Shoobie Doobie Hooboy: Guaba Haba Zoozow Album Score: 9/10

Hell yeah, a swingin' good time!

I was beginning to question this endeavor after getting the second Suede album in as many weeks. Then this showed up. It has always made me sad when I find out someone has never heard of Louis Prima, so anything that introduces him to people can’t be all bad. If you don’t at least find some enjoyment out of this album, I am sorry to say that you are the problem. I can only assume you don’t like fun and hate to be happy This music is pure entertainment, a little goofy, and man, that cat can swing. Not only that but Keely Smith (his wife, by the way) has a fantastic voice that complements the upbeat sound (and silliness) of Louis and the band.

What great fun.

YES :D 5 oh i just remembered what the sound of this album reminds me of. the songs from jungle book :) OHHH HE SANG THE SONGS IN THAT MOVIE LMAOOO wow.....

Keely, Louie, and the rest completely tear it up with the wildly connected musical skills, vocal variation, and showmanship.

Beautiful 👌

Some of the best big band jazz I've ever heard. The variety in singers is wonderful, because every single one of them is really talented. This is just kind of like chicken soup for my soul.

Such a fun album. Growing up in New Orleans, in an Italian-American famiy, I heard this kind of music a lot. Brings back memories of my grandfather spinning his old records and dancing around the living room. 10 / 5!

I love this old school swing vibe!! Louis Prima also takes me back to a particular time in my life that I have fond memories of. This was a great way to start a Friday. :)

Great blues record. late night smokey rooms and whiskey

Raucous fun! The opener is so great and the album is full of energy the whole way through

Yesssssssss!

Louis Prima is always fun to throw on when you have people over.

How can you not love this guy? One of my favourite voices ever in music.

Straight away reminded me of a Christmas album. Enjoyed the staccato of the trumpets. Well mixed and can hear everything really clearly. Love the New Orleans vibe of the the album. Reminds me of literally every 2000’s Disney cartoon ever

Loved this album! Super upbeat, fun, and jazzy. I’m realizing I like jazz more than I thought. A few songs really reminded me of the song from Elf. Favorite song is of course “Just a Gigolo/ I Ain’t Got Nobody”

Orangutang man! my favourite was the one about a banana split

swingin af

Takes me back to blowing up super mutants in the wasteland. Fantastic classic.

This album is terrific! The band is HOT. They must have had so much fun recording this and it comes across magnificently. You just can’t help smiling when listening to this. If you can…you must be dead. The energy, the humor, the talent, all are top notch. This definitely belongs on a “must hear” list.

How can someone not enjoy this? Great music, great and funny lyrics etc.

3/1/24 Favorite so far

Really enjoyed it. It’s like the perfect cooking album and even have some love songs like Buono Sera that makes me imagine me and Cela on the Italian riveria.

King Louis indeed. I could listen to him all day and never get tired of him. All the stars.

What an upbeat way to start the day. I remember my mom telling me a story of my aunt performing Just A Gigolo as a little kid at a school performance. I immediately imagined my aunt as a little girl with lots of sass singing on stage (to an inappropriate song). Of course, it also reminds me of the Van Halen cover & music video. Jump Jive An' Wail is also a swing classic. I bet this album was all the rage in 1956. A fun 5 stars.

I've always heard the name Louis Prima in relation to how great he was, but until now I've never really given him a listen. What a shame it took me so long because this is fantastic.

Jolly, swingy, groovy as ever, the good ol jazz we all love and remember. Easily one of the greatest jazz voices I've ever heard, an instant favorite to me Fav tracks: - Just a Gigolo/ I ain't got nobody - Oh, Marie - Jump, Jive an' Wail - Night Train - I'll Be Glad When You're Dead

This is an excellent album. Has a great swing and would be very fun to dance to. The Spotify "Suggested" songs that came on after continued to be great.

Charming and genuinely hilarious, and surprisingly modern in its sensibilities

Pure Joy. If music should make us feel, joyful is the best you can get, and this is what you get here. Reminds me of my grandmother.

Was really surprised how much I liked this one. The fun he's having can be heard. Probably didn't hurt my scoring that I was driving up to a day of powder skiing while playing hooky from work

Love this.

This is the inspiration for David Lee Roth!? I prefer the original! This album is full of great songs.

Great album. Fun.

This is a great album. Sent me on my weekend music binge. Loved it!

This is an awesome album. It'll be in my collection soonish.

Amazing. Fun and energy from first to last. Give me more!!!

Love. Love. Love.

Ak by som nedal 5*, to by sa asi mamke doma tazko vysvetlovalo :D

You know it’s good when you immediately start it over when it’s done. So fun and vibrant and sharp. Loved it start to finish. Best song: Just a Gigolo / I Ain’t Got Nobody

Already exposed to this and others like it.

Very funny lyrics. Unsuccessful courting attempts are a recurring theme. The sax is on point and Prima plays some great trumpet. The balance in the band is great, and shifts from song to song. It really highlights Prima’s skill as a bandleader. According to Wikipedia, Prima wrote 3 and arranged 1 of the songs (2 of those he wrote are only on the remastered edition). That also shows a real knack for song selection; another sign of a great bandleader. He seems like a fun guy to play with, though I’d need to do some research to validate that. His Italian-ish scatting is a nice change from what I’m used to hearing in jazz tunes. It’s just another way he throws in his own flavor and flair to some standards. This is a great party album for the ages.

Oh man, Just A Gigolo is a pure classic!

Love this!

A brilliant album from a brilliant musician. Luis Prima is simply marvelous: the songs, the energy, the arrangements, the overall mood of the album. He was just a revelation.

Good Ballroom music. Remix potential

Very solid album. I will admit, I’m a sucker for that crooner music, and the fact that he’s a fellow Italian doesn’t hurt either.

It goes without saying that when I saw today's selection was LOUIS PRIMA, a broad smile spread across my face. The album cover alone puts you in a good mood. 1st cut, the classic JUST A GIGOLO/I AIN'T GOT NOBODY: Loosey Goosey band performance that backs his shouted vocals perfectly. I'm guessing this must've been an absolute blast recording this cut. If the rest of this album is at this level, it's a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for sure. [Postscript: it is!] 2nd cut, (NOTHING'S TOO GOOD) FOR MY BABY features a duet between Louis and Keely Smith - a perfect combo (and husband and wife!). Keely takes the lead on THE LIP, never heard it before. "Yip yip yip yip!" The band, Sam Butera & the Witnesses, is tight and loose at the same time, if you know what I mean. And even if you don't, they still are. I just picture crowds of fifties hep cats and cool chicks boppin' and stompin' to this album. Everyone should listen to the original version of JUMP, JIVE, AN' WAIL at least once. Listen closely and you'll recognize Louis' voice as that of "King Louie" from Disney's Jungle Book ("I WANNA BE LIKE YOU"). __________________________________ 🎧 # of LPs reviewed: 15 🎧 # of LPs left to review: 986 🎧 # of LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 4 🎧 # of LPs I *might* include in my own list: 7 🎧 # of LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine: 4

Swing, jump blues. I'm just a gigolo. Muy divertido.

Molt classic dels 50 m'ha recordat a la trend d'embolicar regals amb la forma que no són, queda nolt bé mentres cuines

nice. saved, will be listened to again

Love Louis Prima!! Great album

What a fun album. I could listen to that all the time.

Swing, jump blues. Un megahit. Venga, vinilo.

Loved it!

Happiest sound I’ve had the joy of listening to this week! Delightful.

Fun to listen to music my parents were listening to the year I was born! Familiar tunes also.

Thoroughly enjoyed this album. Saved a few songs to my favorites

Love it. This is definitely my jam when I'm working. The song The Lip is one of my favorites, along with Just A Gigolo (although DLR nailed it!). Now where is my bourbon!?!?

Very fun! Would dance to

Love this!!! Could listen all day. American songbook tunes that are still fun.

This is ridiculous. It's so good. How is this so good? I often complain about remasters, but this is a case where I may have heard scratchy old versions of some of these songs in movies or games, or even on television. But these sound incredible! Also, this is 1956, I wonder what the microphone situation was? Just some mid-side setup? A single omni? On "Oh, Marie" at about 0:35 it sounds like Louis calls the sax player over to get to the closer to the microphone for his call and response part. Then he backs up for his solo. Amazing.

Another oldie but certainly a goodie. Louis Prima is a prolific singer, scatter, and trumpet player. This album really showcases Louis Prima's talent and humor. Not from this album, but Louis Prima is the voice of King Louie in the Jungle Book and sang "I Wan'na Be Like You."

What a fun album to listen to!

Weeee ba de

Knew a lot of those songs!

Loved it. Very upbeat and fun

Awesome! I love it!

Pennies from heaven! Shoo-be-doo-bee! Such fun! Happy music for sure :)

I’m crazy about Louis Prima. He definitely embodies the spirit of his home town, New Orleans. I particularly like duets with Smith. I know he pushed a lot of boundaries & did a lot to improve the stature of immigrant & African American musicians.

Charming, fun, danceable, listenable.

Nostalgic and energizing!

It was a cute and nice listen!

Suuuch a fun listening experience, I found myself really wanting to hear whatever was next. So energizing, great band and featured vocalists. I'm such a fan, i won't look him up on google for fear of a glass ceiling shatter lol Added everything but Wish You Were Dead to my playlist looool

Bluesy

I need to know more about this album.

Y'know. I sat there listening to this preparing to give it an 8 or 9 but then I realized I liked every single song, couldn't find a problem with the album, and would love to listen to it again. I guess that means I have to give it a 10. I'm good with that. 10/10

A swinging set of dance tunes from everyones favorite Italiano.

Pure vibes

I loved this. So smooth and retro

This is a BOP!

This is fantastic, plain and simple. And I used to have a dog indirectly named after Keely Smith, so that endears this to me even more.

So much energy and fun from beginning to end.

I love this album. So much fun and good energy. Gonna be lookin for this vinyl.

A lot of fun!

Swanky. I love the mix of all the jazz elements but it has more of a uniform feel.

Really chill, cool trumpets.

This feels like the link between the crooners and bandleader music popular before rock, to rock. New Orleans jazz blues with a very upbeat, playful feel, and a swing rhythm to get any dance hall jumping. A lot of the upbeat numbers have a very rockabilly feel with the blues progression, without the guitars. Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody is the defining classic for generations, but the whole album is great. Jump, Jive, and Wail reminds me of Shake, Rattle and Roll. My favorite was Basin Street Blues/When it's Sleepy Time Down South.

I enjoyed the hell out of this album!

How do I not know about Louis prima and Keely Smith?

I favorited every song. I just love Louie Prima so much. Reminds me of me playing Potter Barn for Kids CDs in the car and in the house for the kids. Banana Split for My Baby.

the man is absolutely out of his mind. i love it

Ah, ennakkoon tiedän jo, että menee oikein hyvin. Rentoa ja leppoisaa menoa edellisen puudutuksen jälkeen. Kuuntelisin/kuuntelen varmasti uudemman kerran.

I never realized how much I love Louis Prima until I listened to this album. Such fun energy, silly vocals, hilarious duets with Keely Smith, I just love it all. I ended up watching a few Louis/Keely numbers on YouTube and they were hilarious-you need to watch this guy’s dancing and facial expressions, especially contrasted against Keely’s eye rolls. There are a few gold standard originals on this album: “Jump, Jive, and Wail,” “Banana Split For My Baby,” etc etc. so much fun without being overdone or obnoxious. Whoever in the Wikipedia review called Louis Prima “rumbustious” was spot on. This one was very enjoyable, no skippable songs, very good throughout musically and vocally, and will enter my regular rotation. I think that’s good enough for five stars.

excellent album!

Nice!

He rips and roars and is wild. More of this please.

This album was too much fun! You can’t listen to it without moving. So great!

This is pretty great. I knew a lot of these songs from other artists. It’s just a lively, fun album. If this is Big Band, I dig it. 5/5

Blind album and artist. This album is so gitty and happy I struggle to even find something wrong with this album. It's so catchy and fun! I would love more of this, his voice is so raspy, but so pleasantly happy at the same time.

Prima has such a distinctive sound, and this album is a perfect example of Italian-American music.

I listened to this album in exactly the way it was meant to be: walking around New York City on a warm afternoon. So that may have influenced me when I say that my goodness this album SLAPS. From top to bottom it is nothing but fun. Fun in the way that only big band can be. And who, but perhaps Frankie or Deano, can croon like Prima?? And those guys couldn’t scat half as well. If I were sending an alien mothership just one album from our species, it very well might be this one.

this is the kind of album that'll get you five wives

i love having a silly goofy time!!!!!

❤️

This album 100% was a scandal when it came up in 1956

I ain’t got nobody!!

Damn! King Louie singing about Ravioli?

Wow. Really fun. I love the up beat songs full of energy. It's always great when halfway through the first song I turn off the privacy mode because I DO want the algorithm to pick up this album.

Favourite tracks; just a gigolo; whistle stop; jump jive and wail; the lip; five months two weeks two days

Super skladby s nádechem tematiky hry Mafia II

This just have been an absolute banger when it came out. Fantastic.

I recently slipped and fell down the steps, and I've had a hard time hearing when we're out in public, -- and also when my wife talks to me, but people tell me that's called 'selective listening. Addiotionally, I've begun preferring to eat dinner at 4:30, be asleep by 8:00 p.m. and developed an intense love for Cribbage and Scrabble. Despite my spritely 44 years on earth, this album makes me think that somehow I'm quite a bit older wishing I was much younger. What fun.

When it comes to the crooners and songsmiths of the golden age, give me Mel Tormé and Louis Prima and I’ll never need to listen to Frank or Dean again. And with Prima, you get a triple shot - his trumpet, his lovely-voiced wife, Keely Smith, and the larger than life persona that was the King of Swing himself. Even if I didn’t first discover Prima in my childhood as the voice of the wailing orangutan King Louie in Disney’s The Jungle Book, I think I’d still have come to love Prima for the sheer joy he brought to his music. Listening to him is like being visited by your fun-loving uncle who storms into the family gathering, charms all of the ladies, has a rowdy drink with the men, goofs with the kids, and then leaves in a whirlwind of laughter and good will.

Now this is jazz I can get behind, vocal jazz. The energy is high. The harmonies are spot on. Keely Smith’s voice is sublime. The only thing that would make this better is actually seeing the 3am show at the Sahara Casino. Although let’s be honest, I’d probably be asleep well before the show started.

I had a blast listening to this. I really like how Louis Prima melds big band with more New Orleans flavored jazz. Just a great time.

Surprising how many songs I recognized

Loved this album. So good and cozy and fun

When you've never heard an album before but you already know most of the tunes. Great album.

First Impression: "Oh! I think this is the guy who's song was used in the movie Elf." A Few More Songs In: "Oh it is!" This was absolutely great. A unique talent that seemed to carry that sort of Larger than Life persona, possessing serious discipline in musicianship and showmanship, and yet never taking things too seriously. I imagine live performances were quite a spectacle. Listening at work, I was holding back laughter when the song '(I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You' came on.

Just plain fun, joyous music. The vocals are great and the band is swinging!

Just a delight from start to finish

Energizing. Good for a chill morning

This album is sheer utter ear candy from start to finish. A complete joy to listen to. Perfection.

First album I ever listened to with my grandma

Swing, jump blues. Un megahit. Venga, vinilo.

Swing, jump blues. I'm just a gigolo. Muy divertido.

I used to listen to this kind of jazz all the time but never ran into Louis Prima. Great stuff!

That was lots of fun!

Unexpectedly, it was exactly what I needed. Great swing music from the 50s. Just fun as hell.

Oh hell yeah! I've noticed on my summary page that the 1950's is my highest rated decade, no doubt because there are so few albums included from that decade and accordingly they were chosen wisely. Louis Prima is goated for sure, often forgotten when discussion turns to the crooners of the Rat Pack or whoever else, but Prima's got a great edge to his sound and voice that those guys just didn't. Plus the Italian heritage comes screaming out of his music, and a fellow paisan like me can't help but love it. His backstory is very informative: born and raised in New Orleans, which is why his style is much jazzier than his Italian-American counterparts in NY and elsewhere because he was exposed to and emulated artists like Louis Armstrong. Back to this album: I loved 8 of the 10 tracks on the core album, and one of the four bonus tracks. I can't not give this five stars. Odds are we aren't getting anything else from Louis Prima on this list, and he's a brilliant, specific inclusion to represent an era of music that's great fun. I'm a certified Louis head. Favorite tracks: Buona Sera, Oh Marie, Jump Jive n Wail, Just a Gigolo, The Lip, You Rascal You (hilariously mean and goofy song), Banana Split for My Baby (another hilarious song), Body and Soul, Nothing's Too Good. Album art: Simple but strong, memorable. Love the bright yellow. Louis screaming like a wild man, having the time of his life. How could you not love this guy? 5/5

Lots of memories with this one

I enjoyed the heck out of this album and could listen to this everyday!

Super fun and upbeat! Great listen

Really liked this. Not something I've ever listened to before and I don't have that much experience of jazz, although I did notice a version of Body and Soul on this - not my favourite version of the track. But the rest of this is splendid and I listened to it 4 or 5 times without any feeling that it was dragging. Keely Smith's voice is gorgeous and it's a bit of shame there's not just a touch more of that. The trumpet rocks though and is full of style - it's great on The Lip which is clever throughout. Jump, Jive an' Wail is fab and the way Buona Sera kicks up gears throughout is just lovely. Full of joy this and I'll certainly be listening to it again.

I jumped, i jived, an’ then I wailed. Indeed it was the wildest! So much fun!

Lots of energy and fun here!

This is a great time.

I was familiar with quite a few songs on this. Wild music from the 50’s. What’s not to love?

I love Jazz so much, this was fantastic to listen to

The Wildest! truly lives up to its name!

Swing?

I love this album, it's a start to finish belter

Another great party album, jumpin & jivin Put this on at your next event and watch the reactions

Just a blast from beginning to end. The musicianship was amazing. I loved all the wonky tempo changes and just how utterly ridiculous the whole thing was. Had the band not been so killer, it would have just been a novelty. But these dudes just flat-out rocked. I wish it had more Keely Smith, but that's about my only complaint. Plus, it led me down a Louis Prima rabbit hole this weekend, which was a good hole to hang out in. Loved it.

So classic. Love the vibe of great happy music. It deserves to be remembered 67 years later. It is crazy to think that my father was not even born yet when this album came out. This album keeps up immense energy through 14 songs. That is awesome.

CLASSIFIED DOCUMENT - march 27, 1923 - dispatch from the the office of occult studies. robert p. lovecraft dear diary, today i seek the origin of this strange being which calls itself 'louis prima'. with great fear and trepidation i dust off my necronomicon and point my phonograph directly into the book. a foul incantation plays on "oh marie" from about 0:49-1:00. the room goes black. there is the scent of garlic in the air. the book lights up and opens at the page entitled: " i - t a l i a n s ". this entity, could it be the dreaded "i -talian"? being of good anglo-saxon stock i do well to keep my wits about me - but what is this curiosity that leads me to listen on? what is this feeling (dare i say, exaltation?) in listening to "gigolo" and "basin st. blues"? why do i suddenly want to eat lasagne and hang around with my cousins? AAAyyyyyyy OOOhhhhhh what? did i just say that, or just think it? what. is. happening. to me?? AAAHHHHH fuggedabout it aaaayyy? getoutaa heeaaaaaaa HO AAOOOOHhhhh maRoneeeEee11&£!!!&@"&&&£<<~%••...,,.# etc. (the rest of the page is illegible as it is covered in pasta sauce) - CLASSIFIED DOCUMENT

King of the swinging zoo indeed. The most fun music I've listened to in a long time, and those sliding vocal harmonies were excellent.

How could I rate this anything less. It's just so much fun

Unadulterated lightness and joy burst forth. Prima is on top form, Sam and the band are perfect and Keely is the unsung hero with a beautiful, crystal clear singing voice. The ease with which they all interact is glorious. This is a brilliant swing jazz record and Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody would give it five stars all by itself.

Excellent. Exciting. Exuberant music wish I could see it live.

A purely fun listen all the way through. 5/5.

Really enjoyed the walking bass lines and up-beat energy. Not something I've ever really taken the time to listen to - Very cool.

Прекрасный джаз

I like jazz.

That was bloody great. I jumped, jived and wailed. What fun. An unexpected 5!

I've never really listened to jazz, but I'm glad this was my first time listening to it. This is such a fun album and the energy on display is so much fun. 5/5. Favorite Track: The Lip

Wow, wow, wow. So many bangers on this album. Just undeniably good.

Very surprised by the subject matter on “Just a Gigolo / I Ain’t Got Nobody,” considering this is a 50s album. Also a very fun song. Very lively and engaging performance. The performances on “(Nothing’s Too Good) For My Baby” are again very engaging and fun. The way some lines are sung and the vocal interpolations add a lot of flavor. “The Lip” is a fun song. I like the trumpet part. “Body and Soul” has me noticing all the instrumental improvisations and switch-ups and the way the instruments communicate. Also the interpolation of “In the Hall of the Mountain King” was really funny to me. When the horn is copying Louis Prima’s singing on “Oh Marie” and he sings something impossible to copy with the horn and then scolds the horn for not keeping up, it was so funny. Some of the trumpet improvisations on “Basin Street Blues / When It’s Sleepy Time Down South” are really exciting and varied. Also the musical switch ups do a great job conveying and contrasting the different vibes of New Orleans vs. Southern Louisiana, making southern Louisiana actually sound more lively, even at sleepy time, than the city of New Orleans. “Jump, Jive, An’ Wail” sounds like a peak 50s dance song in terms of high energy and variance. “Buona Sera” exemplifies the energy of this album. Despite beginning in a way that sounds like a more romantic and tender song, it seems like Prima can’t help but make it The Wildest! True to its name, “Night Train” always feels like it’s going somewhere, throughout all the improvisations and switch ups. The title “(I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead) You Rascal You” speaks for itself. Last minute is best part of the song. I love the dueling trumpets and the way he sings “I will be glad, I will be glad” at the end. The grunting noises Prima makes on “Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days” are very entertaining. “Banana Split For My Baby” is a really funny song. Lines like “Spread the whip cream for at least an hour,” telling her to go all out on the ice cream, make it sound like he’s telling his girl to go all out because he’s spoiling her, until the end when he says to split the checks. Actually made me laugh out loud. Using whistling as an instrument and symbol on “Whistle Stop” is cool. Not the most interesting or varied song on the album, though. Is it funny the song about him being left by his girl and in denial about it comes after the selfishness in the song “Banana Split For My Baby.” “(Be Mine) Little Baby” makes an interesting link between rural / natural life and music, saying humans create rhythm but the world creates the notes that we reappropriate for music.

Beginning this album I had no idea what to expect. I quickly realized I recognized half the songs on it. Night Train is the song the band is playing during the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance in Back to the Future. Jump, Jive, An' Wail had a resurgence in the 90's thanks to the Brian Setzer Orchestra and I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't know that he didn't write it. Just a Gigolo was recently featured in the second Suicide Squad movie. I think The Lip was featured in an episode of Mrs. Maisel. Even the songs I didn't immediately recognize were fun and beautiful. I'm ashamed that I didn't know Louis Prima's name before now. This album is solid and an absolute joy!

The king of the swingers! This is already a favourite. Absolutely bags of fun, and a great pick me up. Every track might not be quite as good (often re-using licks - but again, what licks) as the ultra-highs of just a gigolo, jump jive n wail, oh Marie, buono Sera, what it definitively is, is a bloody good time. Tight.

Love it, upbeat and joyous

Great swing music. Love the duets. Super fun.

So much fun to listen to. Louis prima is awesome and hilarious and the band is super swinging. Makes me want to get wine drunk and make pasta.

I loved this. Will definitely listen again!

this is AWESOME

Brilliant musicianship. Couldn’t stop dancing.

Swing. Jazz

Glorious 50s Vocal jazz. Buena sera. Just a Gigolo.

what a treasure

GIGOLO!

So fun!!

super fun album, lyrics are goofy, music is swingin

Super fun.

Fantastic album, so vibrant and so energetic. The swing is so good, can't ask for much more here. 5/5

Fulford-Jones said, "Prima is joyous, rumbustious, and irresistible". Can't argue with that! Simply The Wildest!

Amazing album from a man who knew how to have fun with his music.

5/5. What a fun and musically talented album. Everybody in the band seems to be having fun and each song stands on its own. Louis Prima is such a good frontman.

So chill !

Wait a second - Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody isn't a David Lee Roth original. Seriously, a crazy blend of styles that epitomizes cool. This is the the quintessential Louie Prima. The scat singing is over the top, but works great in this setting. I love the call and response. This is a non-rock record that rocks. Simply great music.

Well this is just tremendous fun! Loved it! Hurray for King Louis! 🦧 Fave track - "Banana Split For My Baby" is awesome, but the title has to go to "The Lip" Yip! Yip! Yip! Yip!

Love this! I've long been a fan of Louis Prima and just adore the whimsicality of his music, the amazing playing and singing, and the overall vibe of this album! Oh, Marie is one of my favorite songs!

Every song that came on, I had a smile plastered across my face. What a contagious, fun energy. I love the fast, playful bee-bah-ba-doop way he scats. And he’s a phenomenal, spirited trumpeter too! “The Lip” is hilarious. I love these time signature changes. And that bit in the middle of “Basin Street Blues / When It’s Sleepy Time Down South” when he scats off time and sets up the change? So good! I tried to list the album highlights but realized I was just typing out the track list. Every song is a blast. But if I had to pick one, “Just a Gigolo / Ain’t Got Nobody” is my favorite. Just amazing.

fun album! little bit of raucous shouting and excitement throughout and overall a good time. Awesome piano playing on the second track, "Nothing's Too Good". Really tasteful and also technical. Love the instrumental "Body and Soul". Horn playing was fantastic! Yea this album was really incredible. 5/5 for me.

I honestly loved this album. Such a fun blend of Louis’s Italian heritage with his jazz/blues upbringing in NEW Orleans. The songs/lyrics are good, but the instrumentation and vocals and their mixing and mastering are phenomenal

this is just pure fun. cant help but love it

I love this album. I'm a swing dancer and have spent many hours listening to this and other works by Prima. Fantastic album and a brilliant mix of swing and jump blues.

It’s great !

Fun music from the 50s, some familiar songs

Unexpectedly delightful! Super fun album in a genre I usually wouldn't touch.

This is absolutely wonderful! The entire album works together with the same drive and tempo with some alterations that still follow the same mood. You could just put this on and the entire thing would keep you up and moving.

this album is the one you put on when you're making some kind of Italian dinner

04/27/22

Loved it! Just a lot of fun. Final cut was the first song in memory that openly 'wished someone was dead' but done in such a way rhey wouldn't mind the journey

Pisano! Really unique, gruff voice. And what a trumpet player. Could listen to this all day. Those harmonies are so good. Those album covers are a choice, eh? Favorite tracks: (I'll be glad when you're dead) You Rascal You, the Lip, Jump Jive n Wail

This album was an absolute delight, including some splendid jazzy arrangements, a kickin' band, and the lovely surprise of Keely Smith on vocals. The star of the show is still Louis Prima. His big personality, exuberance and sense of humor are what keep this album going and make it so much fun to listen to. I really love this. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Jump, Jive, an' Wail; (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You; Medley: Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody (and Nobody Cares for Me); Medley: Basin Street Blues / When It's Sleepy Time Down South; (Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby; Oh Marie; Buona Sera; Night Train; Body and Soul; The Lip

Irresistible fun!

Fucking love "Just a Gigolo". This whole album is amazing. A real crowd pleaser - pure entertainment. Damn. Good stuff. I listened to this thrice through and I mean I actually listened. Also - Shawn, that's Keely Smith on The Lip! From Thunder Road. Remember? Remember? Anyway. Five stars.

I love this, unabashedly. I can tell why my grandpa had his first heart attack! Hotcha! Seriously though, this album overflows with a joy and brio that more than compensates for its vintage. The opening medley was hip enough for David Lee Roth to cover, but it's not even the highlight. I love the spritzing of the ol' italiano in 'Oh, Marie'; I love the clever silliness of 'The Lip'; I love the spot of Grieg dropped in to 'Body and Soul'. It's rare that an album combines fun with chops so adroitly. Also, isn't Prima's huffy foghorn voice wonderful? Yes, through the lens of the present day he would be charged with cultural appropriation - ever since Mezz Mezzrow, white guys in jazz had tried to mesh by sounding like they'd swallowed Cab Calloway's 'Hepster Dictionary' wholesale. Still, this is wonderful - and didn't Prima do a fine job in the Jungle Book also?

Sensacional!

This one was awesome. The one about making pie and buona sera were good discoveries to be shared.

Great jazz

Ktebt 8 Saf7at Mel Bouheli Mte3 Dostoevsky W Ana Nesma3. I Recommend

Yup. Happy with this.

Best of the bunch thus far. Incredible. Loved every second of it.

This album was a lot of fun. So much creative energy.

10/10, Louis Prima is the fucking GOAT this album has so many bangers, still he’s made many other great songs that don’t even show up here like Pennies From Heaven, I Wan’na Be Like You, and What Will Santa Claus Say? overall just really great music I’d totally recommend

so fun!

Fantastic, band had major talent, lots of humor, recognized songs. Several times, couldn't believe what I was hearing with the lyrics.

Brutal.

Joyful!
