Cool
THE BEST !!!!
Best album ever
Finally got to hear this
tom sawyer ftw. rock band sent me.
Nice complexity and great sound!
ROCKBAND. Rush wasn't one of the old rock groups my dad raised me on (Journey, Ozzy, Cheap Trick, etc.), but I knew Tom Sawyer and YYZ from Rockband and love those songs. Honestly the rest of the album was really good as well, imo it was really clear that this album (and Rush in general) definitely influenced rock and other genres of music, really interesting to hear such an iconic album for the first time and hear things (guitar tones, musical sequences and patterns, etc.) that I've 100% heard in other, more recent music.
Tom Sawyer is a great first song. XYZ is a good jam. Limelight is glorious. Witch hunt is a social commentary still relevant today. Good album: 6.72 out of 10
Obviously a 5 star album
Excellent
Vraiment trop bon, le meilleur album de rush avec 2112 5*
Classic. Every song is in the perfect interstice of Rush's prog and pop.
Didn't think I liked Rush that much!
Yeah. I know this one. Red Barchetta is the okayest track, and that’s saying it all.
Really good! Was only familiar with Tom Sawyer, but that was excellent.
Just a great album. Not particularly prog, lots of tight, accessible rock songs.
A banger of an album. RIP Neal Peart.
Absolute classic full of Rush hits. Sure, the lyrics are pretty ridiculous, and Geddy's vocal style are odd, but that's what makes Rush, Rush. Front to back classic good Rush. 5/5
Potente. A pesar de no ser fan del rock progresivo me pareció una genialidad.
I mean..it’s Rush..cmon now
Masterpiece? What more needs to be said. Whole thing is killer, including the 2nd half, which contains the less familiar tracks camera eye and witch hunt. Listening to moving pictures has really improved the shitty day I’m having
Legendary
CLASSIC! Five stars all the way.
Classic album. Tom Sawyer still invokes air drumming. RIP Neil Peart
Absolute classic. No bad songs on this album.
A masterpiece. Prog rock finally delivers an album that pure rock fans can "get on board" with. Their musicianship is undeniable - probably the tightest three piece unit outside of jazz. The lyrics are evocative and deep. Tom Sawyer is the perfect lead-off, gently drawing in a more traditional listener with the rock side of things before the album fully reveals its "prog- ness". Limelight perfectly captures the conundrum of what it means to be a rock star, capping it with the vow to never give up their passion for their craft to placate the masses. YYZ is one of the best rock instrumentals ever, showcasing each of the band members individually, but also exemplifying the aforementioned synchronicity. A couple of the songs might be hard listens for someone not as on board with the prog sound - The Camera Eye and Witch Hunt is a tough back-to-back - but I was surprised that the 10 min of Camera Eye was over before it felt long to me. This album definitely has a spot in my rotation, though some of the individual songs might throw off a shuffle of more general music.
Worth a listen. Popular for a reason
Quintessential Rush album. I am pretty sure every Rush song I own is from this album.
A classic
Rush is awesome
Prog rock masterpiece
Its great its everything its toasted its wonderful
really good album.
Gotta love me some prog rock
Rush. Moving Pictures. Tom Sawyer, Living in the Limelight, AND YYZ. That's it. That's the tweet.
A rush masterpiece.
Amazing record, easily 10 years ahead of its time.
🤘🏻
One of the greatest
never knew tom sawyer was by rush
Excellent Album. Very good sound, good rock.
An absolute classic for sure!
Bass solos
My favorite Rush album
Stone classic.
sim
Best one yet. A treat.
Great album one of my favourites, some good songs and some great songs. Limelight could not be more relevant today than the day it was written.
With every album, prog moves closer to the heart.
Cool visuals. Nice progressions.
Moving Pictures by Rush was a really pleasant surprise for me. Progressive rock is not normally my thing at all, but this album is short, sharp and gets straight to the point. There’s no unnecessary indulgence here, just great songs and brilliant musicianship. I ended up giving it two or three listens throughout the day to really form an opinion, and I enjoyed it more with each play. It’s an easy rock album to put on and enjoy, with catchy songs, fantastic guitar work and enough complexity to keep things interesting without disappearing too far into prog excess. What struck me most was how modern it sounds for an album released in the early 80s. There’s an energy and precision to the playing that feels way ahead of its time, and you can hear the influence this album has had on countless bands that followed. This is exactly the sort of progressive rock I can get behind — ambitious and technically brilliant, but still focused on writing great songs. Favourite tracks: “YYZ” and “Limelight” are both superb tracks Least favourite tracks: Every song on the album was worth listening to, and even on the second and third playthroughs I never felt the urge to skip anything Album artwork: Cool album cover
Very fine prog with little amount of pop
It's 3.75
The baseline on Limelight is worth the stars on its own. But that Morse code thing? I just wish I had someone to tell.
Un banger cet album, il fait comprendre pourquoi les gens aiment rush
Rush. I felt I had to speak now. They are so polarizing for so many reasons- most particular the testicle- crunched voice of Geddy Lee. Let’s set that aside. Musically, at least capabilty, come on. They’re 3 absolutely peerless musicians. They’re incredible. The Professor. Lurch. Geddy. Some of the most acrobatic- but still accessible- hard rock bands ever. Lyrically, sometimes brilliant. Sometimes evocative. Sometimes very very deeply connective. Others… a bit weird. Occasionally trite. Although I enjoy Rush, I don’t particularly like them. Although I think the three men that are Rush are stellar writers, people, musicians, activists and altogether great men I just can’t have an emotional connection to the music. I feel 13 when I hear them. Every time. And that’s both good and bad. They’re incredible but bland. So inspiring musically and so uninspiring emotionally for me. And now the vocals. They’re incredible cat scratch, balls in the stomach, helium and cocaine and gravel gargled mediocrity. But they really don’t bother me. I can get past them. Every time. It’s the Rush-ness that I can’t connect with. I have found deep emotional connection to other bands with trite lyrics, other bands with acrobatic music, other bands with slightly annoying vocals. It’s always a the same barometer for me: do I ever proactively put Rush on? Nope. Never (except when I was a teenager amd even then rarely). Do I rock the fuck out to Sawyer, YYZ, Radio, Freewill, Strangiato??? Fuck yeah I do. Do I ever grunt and turn them off, no I do not. So this album is pretty great. Impactful. Drove musicians and rock music leaps forward. Inspired drummers and guitarists and bassists from many incredible bands to pick up their instruments- and for all of that it’s great. Is Tom Sawyer stellar? Limelight? Camera? Barchetta? Yep. So 7/10 I suppose, with a round up this time. And as soon as I finalize this review I’ll turn the rest of the live album off and move on to something else and forget all about them.
I’ll always think of Rush as my one history teacher’s favorite band. He had good taste in music. Tom Sawyer and Limelight are fantastic songs. The rest of the album is pretttyyy goood but not mind blowing. Vital signs is close though. It’s a seriously great album.
This album was awesome. Great hits, and the non hits shredded.
me gustó! muy ochentero pero en ciertos aspectos incluyen ciertos riffs o incluso en el inicio de varias canciones que me dan vibras como de aliens, mis favoritas “witch hunt” y “vital signs”
This album contains Limelight and Tom Sawyer, which are songs that everybody knows and loves. The drumming is excellent. Overall, I’m not a huge Rush fan.
Rush often gets pigeonholed into progressive rock. That’s not a good thing. Moving Pictures showed us a new approach from Rush that was more accessible to the uninitiated (specifically Tom Sawyer and Limelight), and that was good. The band are as talented as any of the legendary rock bands and have been more or less consistent with making legendary music. This holds up to the rest of their catalog and may be their masterpiece ( although I would choose 2112 ). 4.25 stars
I'm a sucker for rock - even some prog rock. From Tom Sawyer to Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight (!!!), and into the first half The Camera Eye... Wow. Just wow. The album started to lose its luster for me at that point - still excellent, but a bit repetitive, a bit less dynamic... Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this, will give it another listen, and likely will increase my score down the line. That first half of the album was simply transcendent. 4.5/5
Heard the tracks on side A a million times, think I’ve only heard the tracks on side B live when they did the run-back tour of this album and I just wanted to see them live. It’s this sort of great hybrid of prog craftsmanship and skill with more pop-leaning melody-making and all those synths and all that which you’d expect and enjoy if you’re on board with Geddy Lee’s voice. Lyrics can be a bit “who knows what’s going on” when you catch them, but you can still catch the vibe enough from the music, which is always the real spirit of Rush to me.
I've never loved Rush, but this album is better than a 3. Barely. Maybe it's my familiarity with the "hits" that brings it up a notch . . . but it would just feel a bit wrong to go 3.
4/5 - Hard to separate my nostalgia for side A from my opinion on a fresh listen. I truly understand why I liked this when I was 16, but how do you listen to the cheese of Tom Sawyer today and not still love it while also recognizing it's pretty dreadful? Red Barchetta, YYZ, and Limelight are all so good. Even so, I have to give this a 4, but I can't tell you why, other than it's just not a 3 or a 5.
Liked it, not usually that into prog rock.
This was a super fun album! Even if you haven't listened to Rush before, there's at least a few songs you'll enjoy here.
Sounds like guitars talking but in a good way! Having a full on conversation with each other and stuff. Like I saw one movie a lifetime ago where the MC played this album to hit a high score in a particular game and I totally get it now...the flow state you can get into while listening to this and doing an activity is insane!
Imi placr melodia care persista in spate. III piesa - wtf s a schimbat vibe complet. E un instrumental care mi da idei de libertate si razvratire din iarecare motiv. Chitara si bateria sunt insane. Chorus u e insane. F bun chitaristu, pinch harmonics rup rau.
Meget cool og accessible progressive hard rock album!
It's a good album made by great musicians.
This album was basically a battle between me and the guitar, and the guitar won. I went in thinking, “Okay, cool 80s vibes,” and ended up really appreciating the musicianship, especially the riffs and solos. There were moments where I literally stopped what I was doing just to listen to the guitar. Witch Hunt was my favorite track, and Red Barchetta was a pleasant surprise. That said, not every song grabbed me. Some parts felt a little boring, and while I can absolutely understand why Moving Pictures is considered a classic, I didn’t connect with it enough to start saving tracks or replaying the album regularly. This is one of those records where I respect it more than I love it. Great musicianship, great production, and some genuinely impressive moments, but not something I’d personally reach for often. 4/5 stars.
Cool and accessible hard rock album with prog tendancies for the most part hidden.
Üllatavalt intelligentne proge rock
Very good album. Second Rush album in this project. Previous one (2112) was also very good (between 4 and 5 stars). I'm not a huge fan of the voice, but I really love the instrumentals. Overall, I enjoyed most songs, especially, "YYZ", "The Camera Eye", or "Red Barchetta". This may be 5 stars if not for the last two songs (which, in any case, are still pretty good) and the vocals.
Rush is maybe kind of lame in the prog rock way, but they’re still fun. I like this *shrugs*
Remarkable. A legendary opening (& to paraphrase Drumeo, birthplace of a million air drummers) followed by the brilliant & underplayed Red Barchetta & YYZ, plus lyrics on issues like fame & intolerance as relevant today. Only regret, it feels like an album with an A & a B side.
it's a classic for a reason.
Très sympathique, l'album m'a fait découvrir un genre plus expérimentale de hard rock.
Rush is super polarizing but this is one of the more accessible, albums, which isn't saying much. Tom Sawyer and Limelight (and less so YYZ) are probably the only songs many people know of Rush, I didn't realize they were on the same album. I enjoyed it for sure and would listen again.
Hell yeah brother. Dolby Atmos mix of this is phenomenal Tom Sawyer total classic, YYZ for some reason I know really well in particular, and is the reason I know the Morse code for Y and Z off the top of my head. Honestly had never heard the rest aside from maybe limelight once?
I’d never listened all the way through. Strong album.
A classic.
Better than 2112, liked this, felt like video game music at parts and you could hear the precursors to 90s pop rock
Highlights: Tom Sawyer, Limelight, The Camara Eye and YYZ. 4.1
Not into the timbre of Geddy Lee's voice. Never have been. The musicianship is, of course, outstanding however.
6.4.26 General Thoughts: Really funky and interesting. Some pretty incredible compositions, and a rather interesting performance from the lead singer. Beautiful riffs. Can tell why this is a prog classic. Favorite Song: Red Barchetta Rating: 4.5/5
Trying to figure out EXACTLY why but i liked this IMMENSELY more than 2112. Maybe it’s just a little more shine on the production? Maybe it’s the fact there were multiple tentpole songs i already knew, but i’m not sure. This one really worked for me.
I liked this.
I like Rush not so much this album but I would listen to it
Fun. I never got into Rush, but I heard them plenty on the radio. They haven’t outstayed their welcome. Good songs, complicated music, enjoyable but not annoying.
A few years back I went through a bit of a Rush phase, and my favorites were Fly By Night and Farewell to Kings. This one I thought was fine but not great. But many, I really liked this one. Much better than I remembered.
Pretty cool and good.
Pretty good!
Favorite Track: YYZ
Сара 3,5 Марко 4,5
Loved it. Has to be my favourite album cover.
Very good but none of the songs individually stood out much.
Actually some v cool songs
Leuk album! Technisch super goed!
Fan fucking fantastic
Not really into this kinda music but cmon you can’t deny how awesome this is
Iconic album by a Canadian national treasure of a band!
I loved hearing songs I recognized like YYZ and Limelight. I didn't know they were from this album. Such good classic rock vibes. Tenor with thrashing guitar gets me when it's from this period.
Friday May 22nd, 2026. I really enjoyed this album. It is a nice mix of unique style and traditional rock the I enjoy. It can almost sound pretty ethereal. I also really like the cover art. My favorite song of the album was Red Barchetta. 8.5/10
I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with album. Rush’s lead vocalist is incredibly fun to listen to, the instrumentals and production are on point, and the song writing is really good. Even the 10 minute long song “The Camera Eye” keeps my attention just because it’s done well. I like this album a lot but I don’t quite love it enough for a 5, though that’s something that could change with time.
I don't like prog rock generally but I do like Rush specifically. It rocks but it's still weird. I can listen to it endlessly and just take the ride. That being said, this album has a few of my favorites from Rush and the rest are just okay. Solid 4 stars
Big step up on the last Rush record especially on the middle stretch, they bring in kind of a new wave esque sound in places which really helps and I liked this a lot
Good. Exactly what I expect from Rush
#354/1001. Somehow, I’ve never liked or not liked Rush. Indien’t have any Rush-fan friends, and while I got a bit into King Crimson and other progressive rock the genre never felt my own. The most times I’ve concentraded on their music is their documentary, and now listening to this album. And yet I seem to know a lot of their songs, and they still sound refreshing; they are of a certain era, but don’t sound dated (unlike a lot of other music from the same era and genre). So out of respect and out of hope I might some day become a rush fan, a 4.
Some highlights here for sure. Enjoyed this one and got to give it praise for making an 11 minute track not feel tedious. Idk I liked it for more than just Tom Sawyer; at least 3 of the tracks were very good and memorable. I’m usually not too impressed by 80s rock and synth sound but Moving Pictures was a pleasant surprise. Love the album art too.
It's the one with Red Barchetta and YYZ
I have come to the conclusion that this is the best Rush album. Also, Neil Peart deserves his reputation. But I do not want to listen to Rush. Still. This album gets a 4. Musicianship goes a long way in my book. Boolean: yes, yes I am glad I heard it. Now let’s move on.
Klassiker.
Really liked my favorites from this album, the rest were 3 stars imo so that averages to 4! Favorites: Tom Sawyer, Limelight, YYZ
Another classic from Rush filled with great songs. They knew how to put together very tight and well crafted music.
If I’m being honest, I don’t feel like I enjoy Rush quite as much as when I was in high school. But cmon man, what do you want from me? 4.5 Stars
Tom Sawyer and Limelight 5 stars, the rest, 4 stars
3.5 stars
Great progressive rock.
Great album, classic prog hit. In the scheme of 1001 great albums, it absolutely merits a 4, but in the realm of prog, I think there are more interesting bands/albums and really only is a 3. However, the international impact of this album + the ingenuity of Lee, Peart, and Lifeson combined is absolutely incredible.
Somehow I've never actually listened to an entire Rush album. Good stuff. Put "XYZ" in the list of 'Best Rock Instrumental Tracks (not composed by Alan Parsons)' along with Haken's "Nil By Mouth" and Porcupine Tree's "Wedding Nails".
8/10 Love it all the way through.
A few kinda good songs then the rest is amazing
Muy bueno
Energetic and trend-setting, the sounds of Rush engage the listener into a trance of synth and drums and guitars
2026.05.06
Álbum muito legal que tem bastante conteúdo pra oferecer, marca varios aspectos do rush mt bem.
definetaly one of the best prog rock albums of all time
Alright. It's Saturday night, I have no date, A 2 Liter bottle of Shasta, and my all Rush mixtape. Lets rock.
Rush is one of those bands that you never know the name of but has a CLEAR sound. They really take you on an experience. Highlights: Tom Sawyer, YYZ
Tom Sawyer, baby!!! What else is there to say? Great album. 4 Stars
pretty good
Some really good songs on this album. Really liked the voice of the singer. Sometimes a bit too busy for me music wise, but otherwise really good. Liked the guitar work!
Too many bangers to give this less than a 4.
4.0 - Very Good
The stoners in the back of the school bus played this all the time.
I thought this was super unexpected and fun, its nice hearing new stuff.
Muy entretenido, bastante diverso e inesperado
Haven’t heard this in awhile. Wow. Neil Peart. All I really want to listen to is him. The rest is far too treble, but if I am giving Sticky Fingers a 4 this definitely deserves a 4 just for Peart. He was truly amazing. I would never just pop this on, but, yeah I don’t throw the Stones on much either. But I am glad I listened.
Reallu good
This was outstanding! I really loved almost every minute of it! First time listening to this full album.
4.25 - I almost went five stars on this one. I just don't always love the vocals as much as the music on this album.
A nostalgic one for me
Крутой альбом
3.75 I literally had the thought, after a real low week of albums, “Man, I’d give anything for an album from a fun band I know is good! Like, idk….Rush?” And, lo and behold. Look. Rush is NOT my favorite band, but this fun, indulgent, silly, fast-paced album felt like a beautiful oasis in the slog of all the shit I’ve been getting recently. God bless America, God bless Rush.
10/10
Yes
pretty good fav song: Vital Signs
I'm not a RUSH person but I think this is the best album i've heard. Had the hits like Tom Sawyer but also had a bunch of cool robotic grooves. I still struggle with the singing though. I enjoy them more when Geddy is sitting in the pocket of the VS over the top hitting the high notes. Also, why does this cover look like a motivational poster...
Веет старой музыкой крч атмосферно круто
pretty good! i listened to this one twice actually since i was enjoying it. there's a bizarre assortment of instruments here and it worked well for me because there's a good hard rock backbone with some deliciously intricate tracks like "YYZ" that tickled my brain while still having some very enjoyably progressive tracks like "the camera eye". everything felt really well placed in the mix too. biggest issue are these vocals which are just.... odd? i don't know. i don't hate it, but geddy lee's high register feels very out of place. did not warm for me much on relisten.
Maybe a slightly shorter review because I wrote a longer one and then accidentally deleted it and cannot be bothered to rewrite it all. It's not bad but there's something about this period of prog rock that feels like it is undergoing a deep identity crisis. This almost feels more like an albeit, very good, standard rock album. My expectations when I hear the word "prog" are a bit more jazzy and a lot less Hard Rock then what is here. That said once I attuned to the sound of Rush I did begin enjoying this a lot more. The singing never quite hit for me, and is ultimately the thing that detracts the most from the album as a whole, but the guitar work here is reaaaally solid. Songs like YYZ highlight that best, but I did also like Limelight and Tom Sawyer (albeit only on a second listen). It does just enough to get a 4 from me, but I am feeling quite generous today so who knows.
I was ready to instinctively give this a 5 on the back of Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight and Vital Signs but re-listening reminded me there’s a good reason why I tend to always skip the other songs. Some of the longer, softer prog ballads feel so self indulgent, even when they’re not singing about a Ferrari. I’ll settle on a 4 but those earlier mentioned tracks truly are all timers.
They're no Helix. Helix was a wicked concert. Fuck I sold a lot of dope at that concert. I mean they had good lyrics, like "Gimme an R-O-C-K!", and then the crowd yells "ROCK!" really loud, now that's a fuckin' concert! Rush just don't do stuff like that. I mean, they got songs about how trees are talking to each other, about how different sides of your brain work, outer space and other bullshit. Now go play that Diane Sawyer song and gimme a fuckin' R!
Neil Peart is crazy
Varied, Groovy, Poppy, Fun!
Solid rock album. Nothing more, nothing less.
It was a very interesting album. I am new listening this kind of music but for sure I enjoyed this album
Favourite Songs: Tom Sawyer YYZ The Camera Eye
7 songs and only 39 minutes yet this album stands out in the best way. Great rhythm, great vocals, and great lyrics. Every song is a journey and each has so many component’s.
No. 392/1001 Tom Sawyer 3/5 Red Barchetta 4/5 YYZ 3/5 Limelight 4/5 The Camera Eye 3/5 (2x) Witch Hunt 4/5 Vital Signs 4/5 Average: 3,5 I really, really liked 2112, so I was really excited for this album. Kinda expected to like Moving Pictures even better. Sadly I was a bit disappointed. It was a good listen, but I hoped to for something better.
Highlights: Tom Sawyer, YYZ, The Camera Eye, Vital Signs.
old music, nostalgic
An album I've heard hundreds of times. Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Red Barchetta all really kick ass, those three alone make the album worth having. "Limelight" is a really obnoxious track. We used to sing "For those who wish to peeee!" so we wouldn't go crazy at work. As always Geddy's vocals and the shitty lyrics can sink a lot of the high points. Side 2 is slightly weaker because of The Camera Eye with its badly dated synths and bloated length. I think both Witch Hunt and especially Vital Signs are solid but far from essential. It's their best album, but I consider nothing they recorded to be "classic." Four stars it is.
legal melhores musicas: tom sawyer, yyz, limelight, red barchetta, the camera eye, witch hunt, vital signs. Nessa ordem :) :o
Synth!! Gold.plated diamond.encrusted horseshoe❤️
I’m only familiar with Rush’s radio hits so I was pleased to hear “Tom Sawyer” and “Limelight” on this album. I didn’t realize that Rush was a prog rock band I guess, so the instrumentals and 10 minute songs were surprising. I liked “Witch Hunt” also.
*Solid prog rock
Brought up on prog but not listened to Rush as much as some of the pioneers of the genre. That being said, I have heard much of this album randomly over the years. Really enjoyed this, although some of the synth sounds are a bit of their time. 4 out of 5, solid album.
Amazing album, second favorite Rush record after Permanent Waves.
If it wasn’t for Gerry Lee’s voice, this had 5-star potential. Very impressive instrumentation and songwriting all around.
Seems like a rock album for rock fans. Some good tracks on this one.
Excellent album that I appreciate more after each listen. My favorite from Rush and borderline 5 star, but I think it falls just short.
Red Barchetta
A pretty decent progressive rock album - which, in musical evaluation terms, must be the equivalent of saying "a pretty decent piece at the Louvre"; it's a genre thriving with hard-hitters and the ratings won't dispute that here It didn't "WOW" me, but it's a solid album with good offerings. A very '80s rock album, just more frantic, heavier, and with a progressive flow
great album, very solid 9/10 First listen tracklist ranking: 1. Tom Sawyer 2. YYZ 3. Witch Hunt 4. Limelight 5. The Camera Eye 6. Vital Signs 7. Red Barchetta
Nice prog rock. Really enjoyed the playing, especially Geddy Lee’s bass and the heavy guitar on Witch Hunt.
I remember listening to Rush a little before I started the generator and I really liked what I heard. This wasn't any different. It's a really solid album and can only probably get better after each listen.
WHAT A RUSH ahahhah. Great Rock Album
I rarely listen to rock to be honest. It is definitely one of my less-explored genres, so this album was a welcome breath of fresh air. Have always loved electric guitars (sonically) and can definitely see myself coming back to this album again in the near future. Will be checking out Rush's other LPs for sure.
Great album. Bangers on there. Yyz is a favorite. 4.5/7 80.18%
Canadian
This record contains perhaps the tightest song Rush ever made ("Limelight"), my favorite Rush song ("Red Barchetta"), an instrumental named for an airport ("YYZ"), a truly propulsive opener ("Tom Sawyer"), and ultimately a collection of music that highlighted the instrumental range of the band. The back half of the album does drag a bit, but imagine it's 1981, you would buy the vinyl, cassette or 8 track - and only listen to the first side.
Killer prog album, very impressed they are just a 3-piece band. Still not a fan of Geddy's vocals but I am learning to appreciate it more as I have become a bigger fan of prog rock in general. Of the couple Rush albums that I have listened to from start to finish this is my favorite one by far. The music is just so good, drums, bass, guitar, tempo.
Quite interesting; a bit of The Police, a bit of progressive rock, a touch of psychedelic. I liked it. Would definitely listen to again. 8/10
I thought the alien beep-boop noises were pretty funny. Aside from that this is a standard good rock album. Favorite Track: Tom Sawyer
YYZ brought me back to my guitar hero days
Prog rock at it’s finest.
Great album. Solid
Slept in the car while this played but the parts I was awake for were cool
Lots of great songs! Some kinda weird moments
I want to talk to Patrick about Rush but I don’t know if it’s pronounced “Geddy” or “Jeddy” and at this point I’m too afraid to ask
3/13/26. Overall great album. Not fair that I rank YYZ and Tom Sawyer so highly that the other tracks don't hit the same, but still well written songs. The musicianship is also off the charts.
Moving Pictures is a strong 4/5.
The album flows seamlessly, but the final track, Vital Signs, shifts toward reggae and new wave influences. While innovative, it doesn’t quite reach the same level of impact as the earlier songs, which makes it difficult to give the record a perfect 5/5
Thoughts before listening: Rush's big classic rock breakthrough after years of a cult following making dense prog rock songs. At least that's how I've always thought of this album. I'm not the biggest Rush fan in the world but im sure I'll know most of this album. Rush was my uncle's favorite band and my uncle was really cool. Should be a fun listen. Review: "Tom Sawyer" kicks us off and it's just an all timer. Super catchy but also with plenty of proggy goodness thrown in. Some cheesy synth affects here but that's fine...it's part of the appeal. There are other hits on here with "YYZ" and "Limelight", but also definitely some songs where the cheese factor takes over. I like Geddy's basslines throughout and of course Neil Peart's drums are iconic. I'll give this 4-stars.
I’ve listened to rush before but not much I thought the album was good a great start of an album with some great songs but doesn’t keep the heights of the start but a good album overall
Realized I had never listened to a full rush album before. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would, ended up listening to all the live cuts on the anniversary edition too.
Tom Sawyer is such a great opener. The panning synths tickle your brain and the whole song as whole is just very satisfying to listen too. All the punches on the track just slays. Neil Peart said of the lyrics: “Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be—namely me, I guess.” Red Barchetta is another great cut. The lyrics are imaginative about someone going to his uncle’s farm sneaking out to take his red barchetta sports vehicle. The song's lyrics tell a story set in a future in which many classes of vehicles have been banned by a "Motor Law." You can hear tires screeching in the song and overall it has a very nostalgic free spirit vibe to the track. YYZ is a classic. The beat for those who don’t know is inspired by the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport in Morse code, near Rush's hometown. The piece's introduction, played in a time signature of 10/8 repeatedly renders "Y-Y-Z" in Morse Code using various musical arrangements. To me this song sounds like your going through Pearson airport trying to get in a busy crowd to hopefully catch your flight on time. Limelight isn’t just an 80’s prog classic. It’s an 80’s classic period. It talks about the seeming glamorous life of being a rockstar that is often perceived from the outside but in fact feeling trapped in the inside. Great stuff. The Camera Eye is a bit of a low point on the album for me. Lyrics are kind of generic about New York and London but really the way it’s written could have described any 2 cities in the world. Musically it’s a decent prog song but it drags a little for me. Witch Hunt. Interesting fact about this song. It was recorded on the same day as the death of John Lennon. Thematically I guess it’s a song that criticizes intolerance using mob analogies. Song kind of drags for me too on this one. Vital Signs. A song about individuality and the pressures of conforming. This has some Police influence. It incorporates reggae beats and prog electronica. It’s an okay closer but not my favourite cut on the album. In summary, the first half of this record is perfection for me. The second half is a bit of a drag. Great record overall. Tom Sawyer 10 Red Barchetta 10 YYZ 10 Limelight 10 The Camera Eye 7 Witch Hunt 8 Vital Signs 9 9.14/10
Tuttu levy, mukavaa progeilua.
gets a little annoying at some point, but generally cool
Good
Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, and YYZ are obviously excellent, Limelight and Camera's Eye are solid too, but im just not a fan of Witch Hunt or Vital Signs. As much as I want to give this a 5, I can't justify it for an album that, in my opinion, loses its steam in the back half.
Good. Enjoyable
40 minutes of near perfection
The first four songs should make it a five, but I just can’t do it. It’s a 4.5 for me.
Really good album. I mostly like the progressive parts, the rest is a bit too painfuly 80s (mostly because of Lee's voice, the guitars weren't thattttt bad, I liked them.) YYZ is a genius song. I'll rush to listen to it again!
I really enjoyed this album overall, especially the hits. I'm not huge on classic rock but it really is a classic album for a reason. I got to see Rush in concert years ago, and loved them. This album definitely started stronger than it ended, but still great overall. Top Songs: Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight
Pretty cool
I surprisingly enjoyed these songs! Liked the first half of the album more than the second though, so it’s more of 3.5 than 4.
I really enjoyed this album! Standout songs were Witch Hunt, Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight. Classic rock is not typically my genre of choice but this album had me rocking out.
good
Great album by a great band. Never one of my go to bands growing up but can’t deny their influence and talent.
Album 2 3/2/26 One I know very well already on day 2! Hardly feels worth explaining why I think Rush is good. I think this is a great way to set the line for a strong 4. I'm a prog fan, but not really a "Rush guy", as much as the singles and deep cuts all stand up here. This is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite Rush album, along with A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. YYZ has to take the cake on this album, it may be the best non-epic prog instrumental I know of. I hadn't heard Camera Eye for a few years and that ended up being my favorite part of the listen. I was tempted throughout the A side to make this a 5, there really aren't listed albums from 1981 that sold more copies than this that I would consider to be "better". However, I want to establish that 5s are reserved for albums that are shortlisted among the very best of their genre, and have no clunkers that detract from the full album listen. My taste in progressive rock is more geared towards longer form suites, and this particular Rush album, while ripe with their best singles, is not that. Moving Pictures has no bad songs, but if I were to rate every track there would not quite be enough 5 star tracks to put this in 5 territory.
i *didn't* rush through this one! i'm not a big rush fan but this was a lot of fun and didn't overstay it's welcome. it was soooo proggers
This album really is the gold standard for 80s synth rock to me. I feel like I've heard so many rock groups from that era who tried to similarly marry the classic genre with synth, and very few of them do it as well as Rush here. It helps that the futuristic sounds play really well with their sci-fi and fantasy themes, but I think it's also because they use it almost sparingly and give people like Niel Peart plenty of time to rock out without getting lost in the more avant garde sauce. Another thing I appreciate is how the songs seem to develop and build on themselves. I think it's most noticable on YYZ and The Camera Eye, but the longer tracks just aren't allowed to get stale no matter how long they stretch. And it's not like a modern rap beat switch or something where it's just multiple tracks kinda spliced together, it's more akin to a sprawling epic or an opera.
It took me sooooo many years to get over Geddy Lee’s voice. And now that I’ve been able to mellow on my criticism of it, and maybe even appreciate it for what it is, I can really enjoy this record. I’m never going to be a Rush super fan, but honestly this record gets me the closest there. Witch Hunt kinda sucks, and the last track is a little meh, but the rest of the record is pretty great. 8/10
It's so much better if I pretend the lead singer is a woman.
Starts strong and kinda fizzles out. Much prefer the first half to the second.
good shit - strong 4
3.5 - Classic 80s
An album I never fully listened to until it came out in Rock Band, at which point I resolved to learn as much of it as I could on real instruments (drummer Neil Peart being the highest hurdle to clear in most cases). But yeah, good album! Fun to listen to and fun to play.
Yea this was great. I only really knew a couple Rush songs but now I’m a fan!
Musically great. Interesting voice. Instrumental sections or songs or musical breaks go on way too long/repetitive for the modern era. Almost a rock-opera feel. Good vibe but I have no idea what story they are trying to tell.
Solid album. Always has been. "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" are such obvious bangers. "YYZ" has been a personal fav since Guitar Hero.
Progressive rock can only do so much me but Rush does the most out of all of it. Tom Sawyer, Limelight, and YYZ all on the same album?? Cmon
Just hard to get over the guys voice it's not for me
I knew Rush was packing some heat but I did not expect it to go this hard!! I feel like everyone and their mother knows the iconic opener Tom Sawyer, but what I didn't realize is that this album would be full of additional songs that really hit that same heavy yet somehow Pop-appealing Prog Rock sound. Red Barchetta and Limelight are tracks that should have had the same mainstream appeal as Tom Sawyer yet never even came close. This album absolutely rips, much like every other Rush album I've heard, and even with the 10+ minute track strung in the middle it never feels like this album gets bogs up or loses the vision it sets out for itself. Moving Pictures is Rush really flexing their talent to their fans after years of priming their sound they finally discovered back in 2112 and I think this album alone shows just why they are so legendary and well regarded. While Prog Rock may not be as popular of a genre as it was back in the day, Rush shows that the genre doesn't have to be reserved for more niche or psychedelic music enjoyers but is a genre that can be heard and loved by all. Nuff said!
I've listened to Rush regularly since the late 1970's so know this album well, although it's not one of my favourites. The first three tracks and The Camera Eye are good solid Rush tracks, the others less so. Geddy Lee vocals might not to be everyone's taste, but the percussion and guitar work is great, as usual for Rush. I only wish I could play these at the volume they were intended for. I saw Rush a couple of times way back and they were the loudest concerts I've ever been to. My ears were still ringing the following morning!
Listened Before? N So, this is a progressive rock masterpiece. Everyone who knows rock music knows that. My only personal issue with this album is being burnt out on Tom Sawyer. It's still a good song though, and the rest makes up for it. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: The Camera Eye
• Tom Sawyer is a great song. Its intro is so iconic, the synth layered over the drums creates such a huge sound • YYZ is awesome, the main riff is so cool and so modern sounding. The bass line throughout the majority of the song is crazy too, it's more impressive to me than the lead guitar is • I initially thought The Camera Eye was going to be an instrumental with how long its intro is. I really like the groove during the verses, and it has another really great bass line • Witch Hunt feels a lot like Black Sabbath I really enjoyed this album, it has some very interesting song writing on display. The use of varying time signatures never gets tiring, and the riffs don't sound like they were just trying to write in an odd meter. The production still sounds fantastic to this day, I love how prominent the bass is in the mix even when multiple other instruments are layered in on top of it. Tom Sawyer is obviously the band's most well-known song, and it definitely acts as a good introduction to their sound, but a lot of the other songs on this album are even better in my opinion. Favourite song: YYZ
Do you wanna get some Neil Peart all up in ya?
Not a no skip, but some amazing songs.
Первая песня мне понравилась, напоминает группу Placebo
Kewl stuff
So good!!
Thought they were fun! It's a lot of instrumental guitar solos and such, but fun chill vibe
I feel like this sounds like what I mean when I say “Rock music.” It’s something you can groove too, but not too hard. I didn’t absolutely live it, there’s one instrumental song, and the songs are on the longer edge, but I’m kinda into them anyway. There’s one very spooky sounding song that I added to my Halloween playlist
I enjoyed this!!
1. Tom Sawyer is a classic all-time great rock song 2. Red Barchetta was quite fun and interesting 3. YYZ, great guitar feature 4. Limelight, one of my Rush favorites 5. The Camera Eye was probably my lowlight especially for being so long and underwhelming 6. Witch Hunt wasnt amazing but still was interesting 7. Vital Signs I really enjoyed
Craig: cool vibe. Crazy how all the songs sound the same but i don’t care Courtney: love this album
I used to really love this album but haven’t listened to it in a few years so feel differently. The musicianship is fantastic, and I like the albums mix of new 80s sounds and classic prog rocks. HOWEVER, why did Geddy Lee take the mic, I always thought rush should have hired a singer.
"Tom Sawyer" and "YYZ" are great, the rest of this is good, but I don't love love it.
Первое и второе🙏🏼🙏🏼
I think I like rush ??
It's an INSANE WORK. I never heard something like this. Album from 1981 sounds like music from the future. 3 geniuses and virtuosos: guitar, bass guitar, and drums. The futuristic 11-minute track and the wordless song in Morse code are masterpieces. Tom Sawyer - hit, witch hunt - magic lyrics. The album deserves a 5, but for me personally, it's closer to a 4.
Better than Coldplay
This is definitely one of my fave Rush albums. Probably #2 only to be topped by Grace Under Pressure…but that’s just my personal taste. As far as Moving Pictures: The songs: perfect. The cover: iconic. The band: legends. I have no problem listening to this record, ever.
What can I say about this record that hasn't already been said about the log ride at Adventureland? Twists and turns of intelligent and complex rock-n-roll fury! It's hit has been dulled by my decades of death metal, but still tickles my gibblies and appreciate its influence on band I love today!
7.5/10
I really wanted to give this 5 stars, but Witch Hunt is super cheesy. And there are so few songs on this album, it’s hard to overlook one bad one. Everything else is superb.
the first half of this album can't be beaten. THe second half runs a bit long though and has a few misses (didn't like much the second last track)
Es un gran album. Uno que de los 80s tenes que escuchar sí o sí. De Rush y de cualquier banda. 7/10
It seems like with this album, Rush began taking a more straightforward approach to their music, with more streamlined songs, leaning more on the Hard Rock side of things. Not to say there aren't any long progressive moments here, but "The Camera Eye" is the exception here, rather than the rule. In fact, this new approach came exactly at the right time, in the beginning of the 80's. Many 70's Prog bands tried this, to varying degrees of success. Rush did it right. Well, at least for one album... Key tracks: Tom Sawyer Red Barchetta Limelight
I think this one will be a grower. Loved quite a few of them and I think it might solidify on a repeated listen.
i liked the rock aspect of it, some songs i found too long and didn’t catch my attention but i liked Limelight a lot
It's only rock n roll, but I like it.
Classic rock right here.
Classic, amazing drumming
Absolutely class. One of the best prog records going. Such an epic sound.
Will listen. Will like it. Preemptive minimum 7
Yyz nice!
Rather surprised I liked this. Yeah it's overblown prog rock but it sounded more like Yes than I'd expected and that was a good thing. Particularly liked where the last track ended and the bass was excellent. All the better for not being too long an album too. Suggests they had something to say, said it , and moved on.

Fun album! “Witch Hunt” wasn’t my favorite.
They’re really creative and talented at their instruments
I've been converted!
Rush are one of those bands that are legendary, often only to those who "get" it. I wouldn't have put myself in that crowd but I have a healthy respect for what they do and the musicianship they exhibit. Two songs I was already familiar with here: Tom Sawyer - I love this track, the drums particularly and the fills are just so satisfying. The other is YYZ which as a wild instrumental full of crazy stops and odd time changes, all members are highlighted here but Alex Lifeson's solo is a standout. The rest of the album was new to me. I loved the energy of Red Barchetta. There's something sort of futuristic or other worldly about their sound if that makes sense, that I can't put my finger on. The sort of weird synthy sounding guitar lines sound like soaring through space. I feel this on The Camera Eye which may be my favourite track on the album particularly now on my second listen. Witch Hunt is a very interesting song now I'm seeing the lyrics too. The idea of witch hunt and mob mentality is still ever present today and is something that seems to have always been there. Geddy Lee's vocals are certainly an acquired taste. They can be hit or miss for me but I can't really imagine the sound without it. 4 stars for a very good album.
Ez 80/100 for me. Did not think the album would start with such a crazy intro crazy production. I was really surprised.
อันนี้ดีเลยยย โคตรจะ 80s
An iconic Canadian band! The building on the album cover is the Ontario legislative building in Toronto and YYZ is referencing Toronto's Pearson Airport (probably Canada's most hated airport 🫠). I haven't listened to much Rush, though I have heard Tom Sawyer before. I have always been told by other people that Rush are great and that Neil Peart was one of the best drummers of all time. After listening through this album, neither of those statements have been proven wrong. I like Geddy Lee's voice. It's actually quite smooth and almost elegant at times. Rush are doing a lot of interesting things rhythmically, which is very cool. They're switching time signatures & using irregular meters, which is something I always appreciate. I enjoyed this album overall.
I was fortunate to be able to see Rush play live in Winnipeg with some friends that were die hard fans. So I got to learn about all the details of their performance history. Like the addition of rotisserie chickens replacing the space on the stage of where bass amplifiers used to occupy. Which they apparently use to feed the crew after shows too. Plus the laser show was to this day still one of the best I have seen. This show was likely in 2008 when it was less common to see high quality laser shows. I recall getting to the MTS centre early and hearing my friends geek out about the band. When I didn’t really know much about their music. As we are sitting there before the show starts about 6 laser/light technicians ascended ropes to their laser stations in the rafters. The technicians just stayed there the entire show too. So I hope they were comfy up high in some sort of hammock. Knowing the attention of detail Rush puts into their work made the show extra special. Listening to this album years after made me appreciate the music even more. The sound mastering is very clear and takes you on a journey. Overall, still not my main jam but glad I got to experience Rush live. They are a classic for a reason.
Another top notch rock album popping on by to say what the fuckkkk is up. I never realized this was so divisive, reading some of the review on this one is definitely worth while. Especially the one at the top, dude definitely smoked some Zaza before writing that one, respect. I land in the party that loves rush I guess! Was a fan of this. Especially YYZ, Camera Eye, and Witch Hunt. Im a sucker for rock that integrates synth and does it well, Rush does it well IMO. The synth break in YYZ gives me goosebumps, I love the chord progression, especially the last ascending chord on the bar. Glorious, just hits it right on the nose! I dont mind Geddy Lee's voice, in fact I enjoy it and find it very unique. It falls within that kinda falsettoey metal voice genre, that is not easy to do. Some points where I feel like its lacking, therefore brings it down to a 4 for me. Although still very strong throughout, dont get me wrong. 8/10
Great album, a classic. Big fan of Rush so i've heard it a bunch of times before. Still holds up
I like Rush a lot. I liked this album a lot!
Awesome
Seamless and easy to get lost in. Rush are masters of early hard rock. Listening to this album makes you want to listen to Tommy or The Wall. Get lost in the story for an hour, you’ll never regret it.
Not bad, enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would.
Listening Notes One of the greatest album covers of all time? Lee. Peart. Lifeson. Just at the peak of their powers Standout Tracks "Tom Sawyer", "Red Barchetta", "YYZ", "Limelight" First time? No Will it go into your rotation? It's the Holy Triumvirate
Tom Sawyer!
This project is at its strongest both when it introduces me to artists I otherwise hadn't heard and when it has me reevaluate artists I thought I already had figured out. Never in a million years would I think to rate a Rush album highly, but here we are. The playing is undeniable, yes, but the songwriting and lyricism are also commendable. What can be said about Neil Peart's drumming that hasn't already been said, but the dude is a monster. I can still do without Tom Sawyer.
This was a solid listen!
incredibly wacky but a fun listen. everything works with this album, and it seems better constructed than a lot of similar that came out then.
TS track one is always a banger
I have literally no idea what I expect from this album. The barely tiny hint of an idea came from a comment under a Saya Gray song which said she went all rush at the end. If it's like that this might be a vibe. 1. "Tom Sawyer" - Oh this is really cool? wtf? I like 2. "Red Barchetta" - This one's okay. I like the sound more than I like the lyrics. Lyrics are meh/fine 3. "YYZ" - I'm not sure I'll ever get used to the fact that people say "zed" instead of "zee". Not saying it's wrong, neither are wrong, it's just so strange to my brain. Oh, and the song's fine. Not amazing, not bad. 4. "Limelight" - This one's really cool! I love the instrumentation! The lyrics are interesting, maybe my fave so far. 5. "The Camera Eye" - This one's fine. It sounds cool, but didn't grab me lyrically. 6. "Witch Hunt" - This one was cool, I liked 7. "Vital Signs" - This one's good, maybe the 2nd best on here? A lot of the sounds on this album feel familiar in a comforting way. Like, none of this sounds new to me, but it sounds good. Like it's something I've heard my whole life, even tho I've never heard it before. From the guitars, the synths, the singing, etc. I think that's the main reason I like it as much as I do. I'm not sure how often I'd actually come back to this, but I did genuinely enjoy it overall. That was a pleasant surprise.
Tempted to give it 5 syars for sheer quality of the first four songs. The music, the narrative, the way Geddy Lee's voice is utilised well heyond it's natural capabilitlies... alas, there's some odd production/structure choices on The Camera Eye in particular. Ah well, still amazing.
What a treat...she's real good. 4 stars!
I like this, but it’s an album I respect more than I actually love. It’s impossible to deny how locked-in it is. The guitar work really carries it for me, all clean textures and sharp timing, with everything feeling carefully put together. There’s a very controlled, almost mechanical confidence to the whole thing, like the band knows they’ve got this from the first second. When a groove settles in and just goes, it’s genuinely satisfying. Not perfect and not fully my thing, but you can absolutely feel why people like it.
a lot better than I remember rush being. I love how his voice captures the time frame. there were some pretty sick beats. 60% chance that I listen again
