Loved it
love these little freaks
Really liked this actually! Yay Canadian band
Exceptional as expected - just a bit too short
Complex but accessable listening at the same time. They are all outstanding musicians, not an album I'll probably listen to often but will definitely come back to.
This is another one that falls into the thing of "Let's put all the bangers we can market as singles (and YYZ, let's be real) on side one, and then on side two we can have the.............. rest." And like, when that works, that works (I mean, Hounds of Love is right there), and if you know me, you know how much I'll love an eleven-minute concept piece with splashy synths that sounds like you got Peter Gabriel to make an Ecco the Dolphin soundtrack, but Witch Hunt and Vital Signs just feel desperately inessential, and it makes it all a bit of an anticlimax.
All I've heard of Rush before was the best of album, but this seems to be the best of best of!
Yeah! Synth! Crazy time signature on YYZ's intro. I should probably listen again
Band and especially this record represent music I genuinely don't like but do so in a way I cannot find fault in. Few things here are the stuff my music-fan dreams are made of but still I have to admit to liking this record. Always had many friends who absolutely love the record so I guess it's ok if I still will not put this in my, say, top 500.
Very good Rock Album with no skips But that 10 minute song kills the good streak the album had Favorites- Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta Least Favorites- The Camera Eye, Vital signs
These men treat rock like it's their job. Not in a bad way; just they clock in, rock out, clock out. Geddy Lee doesn't sing as much as recite lyrics like an incantation. They're solid. They know each other. I have no idea of the history of the band, if they broke up, if they ended on good terms, etc. but they did a great job on this as a coherent unit.
3.5
dudes absolutely rock. this is awesome
7/10
Had fun listening to this one. Rock that doesn’t sound the same from song to song.
I didn't think I'd like Rush as much as I did. Tom Sawyer and YYZ I've heard before, enjoyed playing those in Rock Band. But the rest of the album was pretty fun too. The Camera Eye was too long, that was the only dud. Otherwise, good album. Best song: Tom Sawyer
7.5/10
Enjoyable album, some all time classic songs on there. Could have a bit more variability
3.5
New to me, I liked some of this.
Great album. Brings back great memories with my first guitar teacher. Rush was his favorite band. I forgot how great of a bass player Geddy Lee is. Maybe I have more of an appreciation now that I play. His tone is one of my favorite rock bass tones ever. All of them are incredible musicians. RIP Neal Peart. I think my favorite is either Tom Sawyer or Red Barchetta. Drags on a bit in the back half but still some of the most interesting rock music out there.
Hell yeah
really not my favorite prog album but the praise it got got me rethinking if i should give it a relisten .I remember clearly i wasnt a big Tom Sawyer fan and nothing really amazed me . SOLID 7-LIGHT 8
Limelight rules. Rush is a cool band but the types of kids wearing their shirts growing up were not lol. 4/5
Fire!
First of all, I love this. You can tell this is prog rock, yet the sound is very classic, especially the guitar tone and techniques they used, very 80s hard rock/metal. However, they managed to create a somewhat innovative and unconventional structure—at least a 4/5."Limelight" is beautiful.
Funny. I just referenced this album the other day when I said that I don’t like 95% of prog rock, and the other 5% is Rush. And this album is 90% of that 5%. YYZ is my favourite Rush song and my favourite thing to jam on in Rock Band as I pretend that I have a clue what these guys can do. And Neil Peart is god-tier all over this disc. While some of the other tracks trip some of my prog rock alarm bells, the majority pleases.
Bangers man. Rush is a great band and this is probably their best album. I base that on nothing. Still 4/5
Some absolute classics and bangers on here, like Tom Sawyer, Limelight, and YYZ. The bombastic drums especially are irresistible. However, some of the album sounds dated 40+ years on, with very-‘80s synths and guitar solos making their appearances. Possibly it was many other bands imitating Rush - this album came out in ‘81 - but regardless, the sounds now carry a heavy whiff of cheese.
its a vibe. I really enjoyed it. nothing crazy but it was good.
Came out when I was senior in HS
Amazing album, loved most songs. Would listen again
Not a huge fan of Rush, but wow this was good!
ik my boss's boss is obsessed w this band. it was a p cool album. fave is yyz
This album was very good. I liked it more than I expected..
Tom Sawyer is a pure classic. I loved it. This highest rating Rush album I’ve heard so far.
Björk is super cool, but there is a lack of a hook and is a very specific type of music.
This isn’t really prog and it isn’t really hard rock. This album is its own thing because Rush is its own thing. Rush is weird and nerdy and lame and cool and awful and amazing and pretentious and Libertarian and Canadian and beautiful and exciting and boring all at the same time. Rush is too complex to label. Every time you experience Rush, the band is something different depending of who you are at that moment. This isn’t my favorite Rush album but I still cannot deny what it is. I may like Da Vinci’s designs for a helicopter better than the Mona Lisa, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to say the Mona Lisa sucks. This album is Rush’s Mona Lisa.
Great album, but I probably wouldn't stick it on repeat. Tom Sawyer and YYZ are fantastic songs, the guitars and drumming are awesome throughout. I find the singer's voice a bit whiney, and the 10 minute song wasn't good enough to justify being that long. The final track was weirdly reggaeish which was kind of jarring after what preceeded it
Classic Canadiana progrock
Great album, the lyrics didn't make me feel a lot of things but the instrumentation and vocal performance on the album was top tier and I really enjoyed the listen.
its music. there was one song that sounded like a bladee song at the beginning but i cant remember which one
After first listen, side A classic, side B needs a bit of time to get used to. Geddy's voice is fine.
9/10 By no means am I principally opposed to Prog music, but I am a skeptic, and do find a lot of records in the canon to be self masturbatory at times, many priding themselves on the technicality and grandiosity on a surface level. Where’s the pith??? Moving Pictures has mostly everything that makes the best Prog records actually have an impact, using the progressive elements as a texture to a rich and colorful Rock album. Phenomenal drumming, kickass riffs and bass playing, really eccentric vocals, the timbre of this record is so rich and fun, while being completely palatable at the same time. The second leg of the album is great though it can’t beat that first half which I don’t doubt I’ll be coming back to. Cheese to the max, but it’s that good shit
Have enjoyed this album since it came out in 1981.
It’s pretty good. I don’t have much else to say. It’s cool how I got my 700th album on New Year’s Eve though.
Rush gets better every time I listen to them but I have yet to venture deeper into their material. This album is really good but doesn't cross the great threshold for me...yet. "Tom Sawyer" has always been my fave Rush song and opens the album up with right away with power. Drum and bass work are so good throughout the whole album but there is something about Geddy and the voice that I can't completely commit to. Really like the instrumental "YYZ" track (prob cause no Lee). Deserves a place on the list and I wouldn't mind if I have to hear another one by the band...3.55.
Not sure why but Rush was unfairly seen as bit of a whipping boy in our household. As I've grown up I've learned to really appreciate them. For a 3-piece band, they bring of ton of diverse and interesting sound. They somehow manage to keep their music simultaneously eclectic yet smooth and effectively arranged. Heading into this listen I noted that Moving Pictures featured a few of the only Rush songs that I previously knew and liked. After a listen I'm blown away at how good it is. I was hooked for the entirety of the 40-minute listen and will definitely be going back to this again. Tom Sawyer and Limelight are deservedly huge songs but I also really enjoyed some of the extended instrumental sections. Neil Peart is universally recognized as a force to be reckoned with on the drum kit. Alex is no slouch on the guitars and pedals. While Geddy Lee's voice used to really annoy me, over time it has grown on me. Rush has always had a rabid fanbase and if the rest of their collection is anything like Moving Pictures I understand it. I expect that this album is basically their best version of an album release, but I can't help but think there's a bunch of other stuff I might enjoy from them. At some point I'm going to have to dip my toe into Rush a little bit. Props to Rush for hooking me with Moving Pictures. 3.70 stars
GOOD.
I was not a Rush fan in the 80s. Or 90s or anytime, really. The techno/synth sound is just not my thing in the rock genre. That being said, this album is really pretty undeniably good. The big hits were really big at the time, and the rest pulls it all together pretty well. It's sharp and it's tight. I enjoyed giving it a proper listen - most of 3 times actually. And with headphones, it won me over.
Always thought of Rush as being cringe and yeah it kind of is but it also rules?
For how much I loved Rush during high school and early college, I never really spent much time with this, their most popular, album. I'm sure that's more a comment to my mental predisposition than anything about the quality of the work itself. I feel like subconciously (or perhaps not even) I chose to delve into their lesser known and accessible works (A Farewell to Kings, 2112, Fly by Night). In any event, this album is chock full of radio wet dreams. Opener Tom Sawyer remains to this day a stadium anthem on which each member of the band really shines and come together greater than the sum of their parts. Peart, doesn't steal the show, but does enough to keep things interesting. Really the shine goes to Lifeson and Lee as the latter's quintessential bass riff and synths provides the life force behind this whole thing, while also holding things down with an ambitious falsetto. All the bombast of TS are thrown aside as Red Barchetta comes in on a series of pinch harmonics. A strange ode to a sports car, the song treads an interesting line (as with many Rush songs) between corny as fuck and absolute ripper. Here, the latter impulse wins out as the bridge takes us via glittering guitar on a tour until things open up. Peart does a lot of the heavy lifting throughout to keep things moving and keeping this song from falling into dull territory. Witch Hunt opens ominously and rises slowly into a warm synth tromp. Has some of the better lyrics of the record IMO with staying power. Vital Signs bites on The Police and dub/reggae infusion pretty hard, but they do it really well. Its actually among my favorites on this record -- love the arpeggiating synth line that comes in and out. This album deserves the flowers it has received over the years and holds up incredibly well in spite of its overtly 80s "futuristic" synth tones. I don't get moved in a really big way by this one, but it is solid all the way through. I put this in the high 4 verging on 5 territory. Like an 8.8-9.1 or something.
I see this one has some of the classics in Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight. All jams. That opening note of Tom Sawyer rules and love that it's the first of the album too. YYZ is also a jam, especially because it is a complete instrumental and I don't have to hear Geddy Lee's voice. Limelight is another classic. Witch Hunt is a pretty epic song with those synths. Love the background bass on it too.
As a Canadian, I've never felt truly complete knowing that I had yet to check out one of the biggest prog bands (and biggest bands in general) from this country. But that's what this list is for. I've heard bassist and lead vocalist Geddy Lee before though, the guy's a renowned bassist and this album showcases his greatest strength - visibility. While the tone, style, and technicality remind me of Chris Squire of Yes' playing, its presence on this particular album is even stronger, driving the lead melodies on many of these songs. I was a bit indifferent towards his vocals but they grew on me by the time I got to the song 'Limelight', maybe my favorite song here. This prog album feels like it's doing a lot with very little - which is impressive as is, but with songs that are much shorter than your typical prog song, the respective members also manage to showcase a strong understanding of what it means to be "progressive rock". And I say that because many songs, especially the instrumental 'YWZ', manage to encapsulate all those '70s prog tropes very well. The ever-changing song structures, the unconventional time signatures, the bizarre guitar tones, aggressive breaks, and fills - they're all here in spades. And it's all just very enjoyable and doesn't dabble too long on any one idea or motif. This is an album that's constantly changing and one that values cohesive song structures and melody - things that are oftentimes missing from this genre.
Not always a huge fan of prog but there's something about this album I find kinda charming. I would describe it as wacky maybe? "Tom Sawyer" is banger and so is "Limelight" but in my opinion "Witch Hunt" is the true star here. Also I've always rally enjoyed this album cover :) Favorite track: Witch Hunt
3.8/5
I've heard this album multiple times. Some of Rush's best songs on the album that made them stars. Great musicianship throughout.
Man I love this album. Neil Peart was one of my idols growing up. The Godfather of complex drumming (at least to me). He really opened my eyes to what you can be done on the drums. Honestly, this whole band was so innovative and so many bands that I currently love are heavily influenced by their sound. Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight were already in my love list of songs. Honestly I want to give this album a 5 stars, but I don't think it's a perfect album. The last 3 songs are kinda lack luster, especially when the first half of the album are just BANGERS! 4/5
Rush! While there are other rush albums I enjoy more, this record is a tour de force. 7 songs in 40 minutes and some of the bands biggest hits: "Tom Sawyer","Limelight", and "YYZ" are all here. It's a little poppier than their previous efforts, which helps in ways and hurts in others. Overall, fantastic outing from a great band. Definitely belongs in the list.
This is a fantastic album and a cornerstone of progressive rock. As a fan of progressive metal, it’s fascinating to revisit the source of inspiration for so many bands I listen to today. Rush’s ability to blend technical complexity with melodic accessibility is on full display here, creating a mix of tracks that are both radio-friendly and satisfyingly intricate. The musicianship throughout the album is stellar. Geddy Lee’s basslines and distinctive vocals provide a strong foundation, while Alex Lifeson’s guitar work alternates between soaring leads and atmospheric textures. And Neil Peart—well, my controversial opinion is that he might just be a decent drummer. Joking aside, his performance here is extraordinary, with his precision and creativity shining across the album. What I particularly appreciated was the album’s balance. It offers a mix of accessible, almost radio-friendly songs alongside more intricate and progressive compositions. This combination makes Moving Pictures one of those rare albums that can appeal to both casual listeners and those who enjoy the technical intricacies of progressive music. With Moving Pictures, Rush found a perfect harmony between their artistic ambition and mainstream appeal. It’s easy to see why this remains a landmark in their discography and a benchmark for progressive music. Standout Track: The Camera Eye Score: 4/5
Love it, some great stuff there.
They are legendary, not really my back, but they are sick with talent

oh damn! these guys are legendary. the first track off the album, a classic.
Somewhat attractive album, with interesting and somewhat subversive instrumentation. Easily can imagine this album being influential for rock albums afterwards. Album brings fun retro-futuristic at this point beats, but that's part of what makes it appealing. However, vocals are at least an acquired taste which I haven't acquired yet, and as such, I don't even have a feeling of what the album could be about. The further in, and during a relisten I feel like I'm sold on all but vocals. Red Barchetta feels like an interesting song for me - where Bat Out Of Hell I, Bat Out Of Hell II and Bad For Good were all about having freedom, youth related to having a motorcycle/car, here this freedom is taken away, and has to be taken back.
Probably my first time knowingly listening to prog rock. Loved Tom Sawyer and Limelight.
A very very good album. Not quite my thing but the bass player was ace, so was the drummer. Good of its time rock 🤘🏼
This is one of those albums that runs off of vibes and not quality. The songs themselves are not good. I can't count the amount of times I've heard 'Tom Sawyer' and wanted to claw someone's eyes out. 'Limelight' is so bland it can only be Rush. But when I listen to an album that's just meant to make me feel like a teenage 70s burnout, it all suddenly sounds good together. The good vibes just kept on coming.
This was shorter and way less pretentious than 2112. I enjoyed it throughout, the music was good enough to overpower Geddy Lee's singing. Stand-out: Limelight
An interesting album, that bounces between Prog Rock experimentalism and more mainstream rock and roll. Best song - The Camera Eye
4 big hits in a row... Tom Sawyer Red Barchetta YYZ (love this instrumental) Limelight
Never sure if I’m a fan or not. But, a great album nonetheless. Vivid memories of getting this for Christmas.
Strong 80's vibe is present. But not in a bad way. My experience with Rush is very limited for some reason but anyway this listening experience was actually very nice.
3.5/5
I feel like you have to be ready for this album if you want it to be good. Like at first I was like no but when I was ready for it tell me why I was obsessed?! Like Sweet and David Bowie together - making it a great listen but slightly unoriginal
ótimo álbum amei os instrumentos me impressionei q o vocalista é homem bateria absurda
highlights: red barchetta, limelight, YYZ eu gosto da voz do geddy lee e rush me traz memórias boas
freakily, this is exactly the place i last left off my rush dive, so i guess i'll try to pick it up HJKFHSFJKSF. my rush adventures have been pretty up and down unfortunately, i still feel like there's something really fundamental at the core of this band that i am just Not Getting. that being said when i was last listening i had just had my mind blown by permanent waves, a wonderfully vibrant and colorful statement that did a lot to justify rush's melding of melodic hard rock and shiny flashy prog. at least on this first revisit i think its clear i like this one a bit less...the goal here is not advancement or risk-taking so much as Refinement, and i miss some of the more eclectic moments from PW that showed off their ambitions a lot more. the tradeoff has many obvious advantages tho, not only is this just Obviously their tightest tracklist, but the start-stop jittery song structures that have always annoyed me about rush are p much entirely wiped away here. whats left is a level of pure unity and coherency that will inevitably be remembered by fans as one of the bands peaks, and ig its gotta be one for me too. limelight is undeniable as far as classic rock radio staples go, and i didnt know they had a song as moody and bubblebathy as witch hunt in them. yet more proof that all rock bands need synthesizers and im tired of pretending they dont
Chad. 4.5
Solid album like every Rush album but I felt slightly disappointed as I thought this would be their magnum opus but I don't personally think this is Rush's best work.
If Blondie and Heart had a baby ... it would be a rush
I had not listened to a full Rush album before now. I really enjoyed it. The instruments were all spot on. Percussion was amazing.
That one ten or nine minute song made it not be a 5 because it could have been shortened. Other than that the vocals and instruments were very solid.
great way to start the week. first 4 tracks are classics-the final 3 are by far the weakest on album. I know some don't care for Getty's voice & I get it. he can come off as whiney/pitchy. and the timing on drums turns some off as well-i get it. but I enjoy both-especially on the 1st 4 tracks.
Oooh buddy. Let’s friggin go bud. Canadian royalty. My first ever concert. Biased already. Will try to judge fairly. Ah man. I can’t. This song rules. Radio hit status or not, the technicality of the drumming, the sweeping, menacing main riff, the excellent vocals. The weird synths? The fucking drums. Incredible. Heard it 1000 times. Could probably go for another 1000. Gets whiny to start track 2 but man that riff comes in and is just devastating. Mixed with the odd “time signatures?” (I think that’s what’s happening, I don’t do musical theory). A lot of weird lyrical references to “my uncle,” which seems slightly hamfisted. But hey. Another good one. A song entitled YYZ? What’s this going to be? A tribute to Lester B Pearson? The airport or the man? It’s an instrumental, so I’m assuming both. I mean this was a better experience than being at that airport or even in the city of my birth for that matter. LIMELIGHT??? This song is so nice. The melody is perfect, the musical complexity isn’t just there for the sake of it. It adds to the presentation. The bass tone remains GNARLY. 10 minute song. Child’s play when it’s going as this has so far. The musical variation is so exciting all over this. The vocal lines are not my favourite. The spacey breakdowns work and the virtuosic yet impassioned playing of each instrument makes up for any songwriting shortcoming. Dark, technical. More wizardry. This one kind of has a “The Police” vibe. Not my favourite way to close, but not horrific. Listen. Rush rules. This only strengthened that point. Anywhere where the melody felt too sweet was underpinned with bass lines spidering all over and booming, technical drumming with a lush production. Canadian pride, prog rock excellence. 4-4.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight
Classic rock nostalgia. Reminds me of listening with my Dad when younger
Eu gostei, parece que ele era bem moderno para a época que foi lançado
So Rush always seems to he a bit polarising. I understand not everyone will like Geddy's voice or the times they use more odd time signatures. However, I love Rush. Hard prog rock is good stuff. They're all very skilled at playing their respective instruments, though Alex probably gets forgotten the most compared to Neil and Geddy. Moving Pictures is just a great example of what they can do, and how creative they are. I don't think it's as good as, say, 2112, but it's a damn good example. One of the other reviews complains about hard prog rock and I say that is a stupid complaint. It's a great combo.
tom sawyer awesome opening song 10/10 red barchetta is a good 9/10 yyz is a great instrumental 8/10
Great album. Loved the jamming instrumentals and Geddy Lee's voice is just so unique. Some of the songs were a bit too played out in my opinion, but a solid album nonetheless.
Tom Sawyer 4.2 Red Barchetta 3.8 YYZ 3.4 Limelight 3.8 The Camera Eye 3.6 Witch Hunt (Part III of "Fear") 3.6 Vital Signs 3.7 Score: 3.728571429
Overall a pretty solid album. First 4 songs are great! Camera eye was good but I felt like it was a little bit of a filler. Don’t think it needed to be 10 mins long. I could’ve not been listening intently, but Witch Hunt felt forgettable for me compared to the other tracks. They ended it well with Vital Signs. I gleaned as much as I could but this album is definitely deserving of a couple relistens.
Only know them because of I Love You Man. What a great find. Tom Sawyer is a great song as is Limelight. Great to rock out to in work.
Rush is music for musicians. It's technically complex, full of incredible riffs and drums, the whole shebang. YYZ encapsulates this best, but Tom Sawyer is a pretty excellent riff as well. Lee's vocals are fine, an acquired taste really. This isn't an album I'd listen to on a regular basis, but it's still great.
Moving pictures got some great songs, YYZ (Boss fight theme) and limelight is just a banger can’t go wrong. THEN you flip the record to side B and it’s all average songs that don’t tickle my fancy. I reckon the band would’ve been more popular if the frontman actually looked good, ain’t no chicks going for that. Also the start of YYZ sounds like a bunch of spanners in a draw
Gamefreak has some serious explaining to do… OOOOO NEIL PEART, YOU'RE SOOOO GOOD, OOOOOO GUYS WHATS THAT ONE ALBUM THAT RUSH MADE THAT ANYONE CARES ABOUT???? OOOOOOO THE FIRST 8 SUCK BUT WHO CAAAAARES BRO ITS TOM SAWYER 😎
Excellent rock album
Prog but with every ounce of fat trimmed. Master craftsmen.
I knew these guys but it's my first time actually listening to a Rush album. This is apparently their best record. It's never boring, always something to look out for in the music, stimulating material. Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight, The Camera Eye, these are my highlights. Will listen to this album in the future, along with other music by Rush. 8/10
This album was my "gateway" to Rush many years ago, and it's still a good listen today. I liked 3 songs: Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, and Limelight. The other songs are decent too.
4.5
# Playlist track - Red Barchetta # Notes - "Tom Sawyer" is a great opening to the album, and it is followed brilliantly by my favorite one here, Red Barchetta. - YYZ picks out great but meanders a bit too deeply into over elaborate compositions, and the band won't get out of there until the last track, Vital Signs come up. - A super enjoyable experience and a very rich one at that. Definitely recommend listening at least once!
Solid Rush sound, great jams, just the right amount of prog.
4.5
great album, goes really fast limelight and tom sawyer are great songs
LP
So much FUN.
Overall good album 3.5. Few great songs but not a huge lot there for me personally
I don't know what I was expecting but scooby doo chase music wasn't it, and YVZ was a vibe, camera eye too.
Love it
Pretty solid rock
Good rockin' fun! Too bad album wasn't available on YouTube Music.
Classic
Love rock n’ roll; great drumming.
Ooh! Another Rush album, goody. They seem to have a knack of kicking off an album with a classic track or two. Or in this case four. Tom Sawyer is one of their better known tracks, followed by one of my personal favourites Red Barchetta, and YYZ a superb instrumental (which has been covered excellently by Kinky Wizzards I might add), and then the superb Limelight. A great album not quite worth a 5 but a solid 4.8.
Very nice short and sweet. Can definitely bring this to people that don’t know about this album
Limelight is the best song. Don’t tell my dad I didn’t give this five stars.
Até agora está a ser espetacular
The songs may not be for everyone, as evidenced by Rush's lack of female fans. And Geddy Lee's voices is sometimes too high to be heard by human ears. But, dammit, these are some fine musicians right here. Even non-fans have to acknowledge Neil Peart as one of the greatest drummers of all time. Four and one-half stars. The pun-filled cover art is definitely worth a half-star.
I have a soft spot for Rush. What else can I say.
Enjoyable, proggy.
awesome
Prog rock doesn't usually work for me, but this album is very good. Solid, punching instrumentals and verses effectively intersperse with the guitar and synth work to really build an identity into each song. The balance really shines here.
Occasionally reaches Spinal Tap-esque levels of cheesiness, but this moves and works cohesively.
Flashback to 1981! Lyrically, some of the best storytellers in the biz. Peart's drumwork perfectly moves the listener's heartbeat along through the plot, the climax, and the conclusion of every track. This is my favorite of their work, and as a standalone I rate highly. Given the entire body of their work, I get weary of the synth sound and Geddy Lee's nasal shrill.
Enjoyed it, was never a rush fan, but it's a great album
Rock on. Neil Peart is a rock god.
Really liked it. Fun assortment of rock songs, some with banging guitar riffs. Blend of synth in there too. My favorite parts were admittedly where there was no singing. The lyrics didn’t do anything for me. After the first two songs, Rush went on a home run. Standouts: YYZ, Limelight, The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, and Vital Signs.
Awesome! Had never listened to Rush and this was a great introduction. I think the first half is a bit stronger than the second.
You know an album’s good when the instrumental song on it is a banger and not some transitional track or some forgettable portion of the album. Full transparency, I’m not even a big Rush fan (Geddy Lee’s vocals can sometimes get on my nerves), but this album has some of my favorite songs, imo. As mentioned, YYZ is a wonderful instrumental song and Tom Sawyer and Limelight and classics for a reason. I like the first side better than the second side, but this album overall satisfies that Prog rock urge of mine. Favorite track: Limelight Other Hits: YYZ, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta
Catchy. I liked this one 4 ⭐️
Rating: 8/10 Great album overall. The musicianship, production, and mixing are all fantastic throughout. Some of the band's best songs are on this album and the rest of the songs are at least decent. Wish the songwriting was better on Side B but still a great album. Favorite songs: Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight. Worst song: The Camera Eye.
Spent a lot of my youth trying to play YYZ.
So...I don't feel like this album changed my life or anything. But hearing everything after only knowing "Tom Sawyer" put things in perspective. Rush is...pretty solid.
I like it. Pleasantly surprised.
The first album I ever bought as a teenager, and haven’t listened to it since
Some nice points of songwriting, with some low points of filler. Sharp engineering and crisp sound.
just solid fresh prog rock/metal
Quite good
7/10
Dramatic and grand. The virtuoso playing of the instruments with emphasis on the drums , together with the haunting high pitched beautiful singing voice.
Love an album with a killer opening. I think I judged this harshly based on thinking this was yet another 80s dad rock album, but I dug the tracks. 4* Highlights: tom sawyer, yyz, the camera eye
Another band that has been growing on me as I’ve done these long lists.
Good album
Solid group of songs
First time listening to Rush! It was kind of epic.
Good album. I imagine you'd either love or hate this one, but it is a thumb up from me!
Moving Pictures flows like a journey through a sci-fi dreamscape. The music is a blend of sharp, precise rhythms and expansive melodies. It’s like listening to Pink Floyd, but with a harder, more precise edge. The music moves with urgency and restraint, creating a tight, controlled energy. There’s a sense of meticulous craftsmanship, but it never loses its raw, human feel.
i've never been the hugest rush fan, but i had a good time listening to this one. the big songs on here are the highlights to me 'tom sawyer' 'yyz' and 'limelight.' the more album cuts were fine but i felt they were nothing to write home about. as i said before, rush has never been my favorite flavor of prog, but it's serviceable enough. not great, not bad. good.
You could argue this is a 5-star album just for the drum fills on Tom Sawyer specifically the fills at 2 minutes 30 seconds. The first 4 songs are awesome! The last 3 songs are kinda meh. I'm not sure if this is peak Rush but it is definitely one of their high points. YYZ is the airport code for Toronto. Rush showing their Canadian roots and pride!
Being a huge Coheed and Cambria fan, it's super fun seeing where Claudio undoubtedly got so much influence. There's prog but then there are bands like Rush or Marillion that feel deeper to me. Like there are more layers of storytelling, and the music does so much of the heavy lifting. Extra little pockets of feeling and energy. Feels like reading a sci fi novel. Added Limelight to my library.
8 de 10. Lo calificare con números porque aun no sé que decir.
No Huck Finn song?
This was the first album growing up that I really, really noticed the drums. And Getty Lee’s voice is unbelievable. This is true progressive rock. It brings back memories and is a good listen.
Limelight is a song that I always enjoy but seem to forget exists!
I played YYZ for a practical music exam in school. I'm pretty sure the examiner found it to be pretentious to even bring a bass to one of those and he certainly didn't appreciate Rush. I totally nailed it, though. Four stars. Unlike the review he gave me.
More enjoyable than the other one
Classic
Great rock album. Geddy has a unique voice. So much fun.
Opens with a banger! Although his voice grates on me after an album, I quite enjoy it. 4/5
Was a tiny bit disappointed to get this so early in the challenge after having 2112 already as well. I had enjoyed 2112 so much, I kind of was hoping to get this one later so I could look forward to it longer. Nonetheless was pretty thrilled to see it. This one is a little bit of a tough to rate one for me. While I still really enjoyed this album I did not love it as much as 2112, at least on first listen. I didn't find the music particularly catchy. I was masterfully played, and there is just some incredible stuff here musically. But did any of them come off as catchy "get stuck in your head" kind of stuff? Not very much at all for me on first listen. Additionally, while I really liked the vocals on 2112, I found them the weaker part of the album here. I still don't mind them, and even like them on certain songs/in spots. But, there were times I admit that I would have loved an instrumental version a little more. Despite all that, do I still think this is a very good, worthwhile album? Absolutely. That drumming alone makes it worth it, but the rest of the music too is just too good to not hear at least once. I am hoping too on a second listen I might change my mind about some of my gut reaction. This gets a 4 in the end for my overall feeling on it. But from the perspective of hearing rock be very well played I think it's a 5.
I love Rush. The kick in to Tom Sawyer at the start of this album is fucking iconic. YYZ is one of my all time favorites "discordant noise, followed by tasty jams" as Waffle once put it. Great album.
I liked it almost begrudgingly. Who knew prog rock could be so engaging. Tom Sawyer starts the album off strong and nothing was as good as that, but it was close.
My partner likes Rush so I do too. It’s like that.
I don't like prog Rock, but this was great. High musicality, loved the complicated time signatures.
I had an older cousin who was deep into Rush and I didn't understand the appeal. I was just emerging as a new wave, goth kid at the time and I hadn't even really discovered punk yet. This is a long, long time before buying Moving Pictures used from a dingy record store in New York. I bought it on vinyl so that I, too, could drop the needle on the record and hear the opening notes of Tom Sawyer on the loudest sound machine in the house. Of course, truly cranking it to epic volumes would need to wait for a move from an apartment to a house. With album highlights like Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight, with solid tracks like Red Barchetta and Vital Signs this is among my favorite Rush albums to revisit.
Second Rush album of the project for me. Enjoyed this one significantly more. Can't tell if that's because I am more familiar with these songs, or if I am more familiar with them because they are more enjoyable. Felt less heady and nice and tight. Red Barchetta is a new to me banger.
B side is not great but the A side is epic
Was fun. Apart from how much i love this web app and site, you should be able to give your albums half stars...
It's impossible to deny the incredible musicianship on display here. It's also impossible to deny Geddy Lee sings like a man who has barbed wire wrapped around his balls and is trying to start them like a chainsaw. Still, it works for me. Good album.
Nerds
This is one of the first albums where I was caught listening to the drums specifically because they were doing such amazing things. I know Niel Peart was at the top of the class and it shows here, as it's creative and confident. Overall the music is pretty great here, even if I don't love the songs Tom Sawyer or Limelight. YYZ is awesome, and I liked Red Barchetta a lot as a more traditional song.
Excellent classic prog rock. Tom Sawyer fantastic and some just fantastic musicianship throughout.
Huzzah.
onda david bowie me gusto, mucha instrumental
This is a great album.
SLAPPIN’ DA BASS, MAN!! Limelight is an all-time classic and this album as a whole is prog rock I can enthusiastically get behind.
Started off the album with a BANGER and proceeded to just capture my attention all the way. Great production, good vocals, awesome drumming, and absolutely no duds whatsoever. I will say the first side does carry but there no bad songs on this at worst I'd say a very few on side b are good but anything worse than that you are trippin. Great listen, would recommend. Best - Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Witch Hunt No bad songs
Very enjoyable, didn't know what to expect. A decent length too
tom fuckin sawyer 4.5
I couldn't listen to the album in one go, unfortunately, so I went back this morning to spin it again. I like it, Geddy Lee sings in a unique shrill voice, but it works with the rest of the sounds from the band. This kind of 80's rock has a special charm to it, it feels like it brings me back in time even though I wasn't even alive back then! Some of the songs on the album were definitely better than others though - 'The Camera Eye' song sounds familiar, for some reason I connect the opening guitar riff with Pokémon? The album cover picture and with its title is funny!
I've always loved Rush. They went a bit popbonnthus one and its a lot of peopes favourite. Strong.
Rush's discography is overwhelming and I didn't know where to start, but they've been on my list a long time. So I don't have any other Rush albums to compare this to, but I thought it was great. I like prog rock - odd time signatures tickle my brain - but the genre doesn't usually hold my attention for much longer than 40 minutes at a time. So the length of this was perfect. Would listen with my morning coffee again.
Awesome, still not my relistenable band
Nice drums! Pretty good album, but when spotify switched to a new artist and I didn't notice then I had to deduct one star!
Tom Sawyer - 5 Red Barchetta - 4 YYZ - 4 Limelight - 4 The Camera Eye - 4 Witch Hunt - 3 Vital Signs - 3 A breath of fresh air

It drags in a few places and the lyrics aren’t really at their best here, but this thing fuckin’ ROOCKS.
Starts very strong!
Good, not a huge fan of the vocals on some sings.
This was almost a perfect album. The last two songs don’t fit the rest. It throws off the flow of the album. It would have made for a very short album, but if you cut Witch Hunt and Vital Signs it would be flawless. I feel like they were tacked on to fill out the album.
This shit BANGS from start to finish!! I should listen to this on my run & I’ll run a damn marathon 😤
Rush is a great band. Such a full sound for three dudes. I enjoy the complexity of their tunes, though I'm not necessarily a prog guy. Limelight is one of my favorite tunes regardless of artist. Secretly hoping I would like this album more, but it was still very good!
been meaning to start listening to them and they're really good
I wish I could be half as smart as Geddy Lee thinks he is. So much of this album is sung with a self importance that reaches levels of secondhand embarrassment for me. That aside, it's otherwise pretty great. I don't mind Geddy Lee's voice even if his lyrics are cringe worthy. YYZ is the best track by a mile anyway which might be related. The band is tight here too. The Camera Eye was my favorite surprise on this album. It's a great song. The tighter ideas on this album are more digestable than Rush's earlier work like 2112, but they also lose some of the cohesion they had on those earlier albums, too. I understand the hate for this band, but they are a talented crew.
Great record! Love the tight production. It's perhaps a tad cheesy in places, but that's prog rock for you. I still unashamedly love it. Favourite tracks: Tom Sawyer, YYZ, The Camera Eye, Vital Signs.
Is this an LP or just an EP, too short, gimme more Rush!
Don't have a ton to say here.I was never the biggest rush fan.Due to the fact that I don't like gettylee's vocals. However, the prog here is really top-notch.And I feel like they also have better records as well
5 stars in high school, but did not hold up over time
Never listened to a full Rush album before, but it's about what I expected. There's a lot to like, but also I dislike the vocals generally. Still, good stuff.
Rush gets made fun of a lot but this album rips. Their strength as a power-trio made up of 3 virtuosic musicians allow them to hone in on a certain idea and maximize it's sonic potential. The result is straight-ahead bangers that are still packed with intelligent ideas, but reduced to their most potent elements. Nicely done, you weird Canadian boundary-pushers.
pretty good
I was at a rock n roll themed bbq restaurant for lunch and ate under a huge mural of Rush performing. I said I can’t believe we have not seen a Rush album on the list and that very same night we got Rush! When you grow up in the 80s/90s there is always a few kids the word their Rush tshirts to school everyday, wonder where they are. Anyway, I’ve always enjoyed this album, and turn up the radio when the singles come on, but just never went as far as to buy any T-shirts.
Not a big rush guy but this has all the rush songs I like on it.
Really expected going in this was going to be an easy 5. Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta and Limelight are amazing. Vital Signs is even really strong. However, the virtuoso prog rock stylings of the other tracks, including 11 minutes of The Camera Eye are just a bit too much to completely overlook. Really enjoyable but it is better skipping almost half the album (in elapsed time).
Classic and totally recognizable in one note type of rock - Limelight, Tom Sawyer
Incredible soundscapes created and Prog rock intensified. Drumming on fire. Really enjoyed the full album experience
Prog rock is a genre I find rather void of feeling, but sometimes a great record can just transcend the faults of the genre and this one certainly does that. Super fun and entertaining and catchy.
Prog rock as I like it. Not my favorite band, but I like most of Rush's recordings.
Solid rock album
Ugh. Prog. This one’s gonna be hard. Pretty much everything I knew about Rush was from tv and movies. Everyone knows the hits, Tom Sawyer especially, but I never listened to this start to finish. It’s pretty much what you’d expect with cool drum fills, unusual time signatures and guitar solos, some synthy flourishes and gloopy bass. YYZ is a bitchin riff fest. I don’t hate Geddy Lee’s voice but it’s not my preference (as a Placebo and Smashing Pumpkins fan, I get it.) People go HARD for this band which I also never really understood. In my mind it’s fairly par for the course for 80’s music. The production is kinda meh, it feels very treble heavy, but I suppose that’s the intended effect. I can say this probably sounds fucking awesome on some good ass headphones and a J but it didn’t strike me particularly well. Also a fun soundtrack if you invite the boys over for some D&D and chill haha.
I mean obviously it’s got its hits, Tom Sawyer, limelight and those both great, without a doubt. I think what worked for them though is it’s loud, sounds like he’s yelling almost very enthusiastic. Other songs are much quieter Favorite: Tom Sawyer, Limelight Least favorite: YYZ 4.2/5
Overall really good, the A sides were great, B sides were more of the same but also still good
An earnest fun record - not generally my cup of tea but this is in a way an ideal record for Spinal Tap-like fans. Less of the tiresome machismo, more of the light political, sci-fi and fantasy lyrics - and oh the drums. Was not at any point boring.
Rush's Moving Pictures is the band's most commercially successful album. It contains some of their most successful songs, like "Limelight" and "Tom Sawyer." The three-piece band makes guitar driven hard rock driven by Alex Lifeson's technical guitar solos. Rush's sound is completed with Geddy Lee's distinct falsetto, and Neil Peart's intricate drum work. Moving Pictures is full of shorter, more accessible tracks than the band's earlier work, which may have contributed to the album's commercial success.
Am I going to be a Rush fan? Probably not, but I'm going to go through their catalog for sure. The one issue I can never get past is that I don't like Geddy Lee's voice. I have the same problem with Led Zeppelin, but I was today years old when I found out Peart wrote their lyrics too! That creates another knock on Geddy--although the bass lines are next level. In fact all of the music is off the charts good. Still a:
I'm very familiar with the starting banger here but I'm looking forward to see what else is on this unfamiliar album. Really good album from start to finish! Not my favorite (taste) but I could certainly queue it up and be happy to have consistently good rock going in the background.
I think you have to be a certain type of person to relate to Rush’s vocals… musically it cops all of the 4.
More of a 2112 guy, as I think this album doesn't really go anywhere after "Limelight". "The Camera Eye" is a particularly long waste of everyone's time. I don't have any bad words to say about Side A though - "Tom Sawyer" and "YYZ" are gigantic bangers, and the other two songs on there are great as well. Still a 4/5, but like I said, not my favorite Rush album.
Best rock trio? Neil Peart best drummer.
i live on an island in a continent
Haha the pictures are being moved by removal men and the lady looking at them is being moved get it??
Do I like prog now?
Great musicians playing great music that I just cannot connect with.
Really fun prog with a strong driving rhythm. Even though they're famous for the crazy bass and drum lines in wild time signatures, I ended up prefering their more radio friendly moments lmao. I feel I wanted the structure to be a little tighter even if that conflicts with the freedom of the sound. Grew on me a lot after another listen.
I am pretty familiar with Rush’s big hits. Very impressed with this album. Their style is just different enough to keep them off most of my playlists, but definitely great tunes. The driving drums and amazing guitar riffs put them in the same vain as Van Halen. High 4
Another album and band that had eluded me before. So, without any preconception: I should like this and will probably give it another listen later today, but... hm. So far, the first minute of YYZ sums up my whole experience with this album. As in: I didn't know 1981 could sound like Animals As Leaders (who came to mind), wtf, this is awesome until HAHA, tricked ya, we play white dudes' Hard Rock. This is pretty great, when it's great. Sometimes it's not. The main issue for me is that 43 years later (oof), I can draw on a WHOLE lot of other music to scratch that itch more precisely. Or, all of the itches. However, this was interesting, glad I listened to it.
Add a star for YYZ
Good rock
Pretty good
Solid album. Great listen
This is a classic. So many great songs even beyond the hits.
What an interesting album..never really knew much about Rush but they are very cool. I especially enjoyed their videos on some of the songs. Very creative indeed.
Довольно занимательный прог рок, аранжировки и структура композиций чистый кайф. Лучше всего красота альбома раскрывается в темное время суток, возможно позже ознакомлюсь с текстами более углубленно подозреваю что там еще что то интересное запрятано.
I really enjoyed this.
Hey, it's got "Tom Sawyer" and "YYZ", it's great!
Elevated from the norm - 7/10
YYZ is iconic I guess. I don’t like the style that much but they do it so well I gotta appreciate it. 8/10
I don't think I'd ever listened to this album all the way through, though I have heard many of the songs from it. It was pretty good. It started out strong and continued to have a feeling throughout most of the album and then kind of lost me at the end. The denouement started too early.
Just a classic incredible album
NO SEMMONEN ETTEI KIINNOSTA... MITÄ HUUTELETTE... witch hunt
I will fully admit I mostly ignored Rush, and progressive rock in general, until the movie I Love You Man where the two characters are obsessed, and then I gave the genre a try. If youre gonna pick a Rush album this has gotta be the one. Tom Sawyer and Limelight are absolutely killer, in fact the first 4 together are rock solid. The rest of this album is fairly accessible for prog rock though the other tracks dont ever stick in my head as much.
Quite possibly the loudest concert I ever attended as Rush at the Palladium in NYC in 1978. Sitting in the balcony, you could feel the entire structure shake. This is a good demonstration of the band's unique blend of hard rock and progressive rock. While I don't love either Tom Sawyer or Limelight, they were certainly a mainstream breakthrough that got Rush major radio play. Even if you don't like their music that much, can't deny the quality of the musicianship here. Probably a 3.5, but I'll round up.
This reminded me a lot of the Yes album in that while it's quite technically impressive, it just did not really connect with me. These are some seriously talented musicans with a pretty grandiose vision but Tom Sawyer was really the only song I felt had any "catchy" parts (although I might be biased since I knew this one already). I feel like I'm going to say the same thing about the rest of the prog-rock albums we will hear on this journey but I will keep an open mind.
Rush lives from the unmistakable voice of Geddy Lee. If you're not put off by that then this is a good album.
Day60 - idk if i would listen to any of them except tom sawyer or limelight on purpose again but i enjoyed the album
Great great album, loses a point for having a weaker second half
Good prog-rock album. Not my cup of tea but definitely not bad.
I am admittedly a little biased here as Rush is easily in my top 10 bands of all time, but it didn’t start out that way. I was first introduced to this album at a friends birthday party in 8th grade. I liked some of it, but whether it was the complexity of the music or Getty Lee’s vocals I didn’t get the hype at the time. I obviously liked Tom Sawyer and Limelight as they made up some of the sound track of my high school years. It was only when I revisited Rush in depth 30 years later that I truly appreciated this band. The way these three are able to create such a full sound is quite amazing. The first four tracks is arguably one of the strongest side one’s of any rock album. The short, but iconic drum solo in Tom Sawyer packs a powerful punch. Then on to Red Barchetta. I love songs that take you on an epic journey musically, lyrically, or both; and this track certainly delivers that along with a drum track that is unique in its own right. I love YYZ, again speaking to how 3 dudes can fill the space and intermingle with each other perfectly. Limelight is just another beautiful track that speaks for itself. Side two I have not listened to as much but is still strong and consistent with the rest of the album. 4.5/5
Prog at its best! The drumming is of extra note!
Rush is polarizing? I had no idea. I feel like they had a lot of fun with this album and I think the lead singers voice is fantastic. Songs I liked: Red Barchetta, Limelight, Camera Eye.
I got all my early music exposure, and probably most of my love for music, from my dad. My dad had one hard and fast rule: When any Rush song comes on the radio you turn the fucking dial. Period. Amazingly he still sticks to that rule at 78yrs old to this day. As for me, for some strange reason along the way I started liking one or two Rush songs, and then ultimately appreciating them as a highly influential band and iconic Canadian institution (I’m Canadian). My favourite Rush songs are not on this album, but Tom Sawyer and Limelight are classics, and the rest I found super interesting to listen to, if for nothing else but the musical mastery of these three on their respective instruments.
This was the Rush album I grew up with. Hearing Tom Sawyer and Limelight on the radio was an everyday occurrence. They were ubiquitous. And yet the band itself remained somewhat mysterious. Playground discussions of Peart’s drum solo on Tom Sawyer and the morse code opening of YYZ were routine. Some interesting nerdy production choices on this one: every time Peart grabbed a drum roll, instead of mixing/panning the toms traditionally from left to right, they were mixed/panned from right to left almost as if to match the visual of what would occur if the listener were watching him live. Masters of their instruments, it’s still pretty mind blowing today to know that these sounds were being performed by a trio.
Rush is one of a kind. Their sound is instantly recognizable and I can’t think of anyone that successful replicated their vibe (at least not to the same commercial success). Their hits go deep with a few of the best on this album. Peart’s drum kit is unreal and Geddy Lee makes me want to slappa da bass mon. A couple fun facts: - YYZ is the airport code for Toronto. The opening rhythm of the song is played in Morse code for “YYZ” - The front cover is a pun. People literally moving a picture. Those cheeky bastards. - During the “Moving Pictures” tour Rush and the opening band, Max Webster, would prank each other. On one occasion, the Max Webster crew set up a duning table on stage and proceeded to serve the band a meal while Rush played. Good times.
I get it. Rush’s prog rock can be polarizing. Maybe this isn’t considered a great album by many. All I know is every time Tom Sawyer comes I reach for the volume knob and turn it up to 11. It’s a guilty pleasure and gets me right in the feels every time. Shocked this was their eighth studio album. Not sure I’ve listened to any of the other ones! Slapping’ da bass, an animal on the drums, and angelic vocals. What else could you ask for??? 4/5
A really good album, I liked the style of music. I'd heard Tom Sawyer before but didn't know who it was by so it was interesting to find out. I liked the other songs on the album that I hadn't heard, I especially liked Witch Hunt and Vital Signs.
I always start out listening to Rush thinking I’m going to hate it. Must be the voice of Geddy Lee, or my general aversion to prog, but something about the thought of them just makes me feel disgusted. Tom Sawyer in particular just sets me off on a bad vibe. But then as you get more into this album, the awesome riffs, bass playing, and drums on Red Barchetta and YYZ shine through. Limelight is a tight concise rock song, far away from the prog of their early days. The Camera Eye is pretty long, but it doesn’t feel indulgent. As I circle back around and listen a few more times, I realize I don’t hate Tom Sawyer as much as I thought and actually this album is very good. There is some really virtuoso playing, the time signatures are wild, and they wrap it all up with riffs that are borderline catchy.
Everybody knows and loves Tom Sawyer and the album just gets better and better from there.
8/10
Good album, couple of bangers too. I enjoy this genre
OK
With side one bookended by two of their best songs ever, this is one of Rush’s strongest albums.
Lijkt een beetje op een combinatie van the Police en supertramp. Vocaal komen ze alleen net iets te kort maar muzikaal is het top
Beukers maar de stem is toch... matig.
Limelight is a perfect song. This album is one of the best. 4.5
Any album that includes Tom Sawyer is going to be pretty good. That is an absolutely exceptional Rock and Roll song. Beyond that, some other good underrated tunes, notably YYZ.
I fucking love this album, and I love Rush. The band just has an endless supply of rocket sauce, to quote Jack Black. Chronically overlooked. 1) Drums. Neil Peart was called “The Professor” and it’s clear why. He’s technically perfect. Switching in and out of time signatures, different rhythms, transitions. It’s so academic and interesting but primal and toe-tapping at the same time. If Zeppelin was coming from below the belt, Rush comes from above the neck. 2) how do three guys make this much sound? 3) Geddy Lee’s voice must be fake. No person has a voice that high. 4) I think the only thing holding Rush back for me are the lyrics. They’re kind of dopey. But when you’re in the mood, they sound kind of badass, so whatever.
RIP NEIL PEART! This band is so insanely talented it blows my mind. when I was in 7th grade, my buddy Christian lent me his Rush Gold CD and I spent countless hours trying to learn how to play songs like YYZ and Tom Sawyer. Good times Anyways, I’m just here so I won’t get fined
Thank God for ‘I love you man’ cos they really put these guys on the map 😜 YYZ started off bizarre but that’s an eclectic song if I ever I heard one. Cool album
Everyone of Rush's albums is an exploration of complex rhythms and experimental sounds. This one is no different and always a listening adventure
Rush is one of the last bands of the 70's rock era. I enjoy most of Rush's stuff and this is no exception. The camera eye was my favorite.
Great album
Definitely got some hits. Technically amazing. In terms of actual songs/nerd appeal? Pretty good prog rock power trio.
I've never been fully on the Rush train, even during the height of my prog fandom. I enjoy 2112, and I overplayed Tom Sawyer for myself in high school (still have yet to recover), but when I tried some of their other stuff (namely Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings), it didn't leave me chomping at the bit for more. Now, though, I'm years removed from being all prog all the time, and I think I'm in a healthier spot to fully love these guys. This album is a stellar listen. Production is excellent from front to back, which makes total sense for the perfectionists that were Rush, and the performances from all members make me wanna go back to my old proghead self. Tom Sawyer, as mentioned before, has not yet restored its position for me, but I can still see what makes it so beloved, and I can respect the fuck out of it. I also was reminded that Limelight exists, whose hook is timeless in how complex yet understandable it is, really brought together through Geddy Lee's iconic voice. Red Barchetta and Vital Signs were my other favorites from this record, just great performances for both. Every song on here is at least good, though some definitely stood out more than others, and I think The Camera Eye could have earned its runtime a bit better, especially given this is the band behind the 2112 overture. Pacing gripes aside for that one song, this is a splendid listen that I can very easily see growing on me in the future. I don't think this will send me into another prog phase, but it will hopefully stay in good rotation for a long time.
Such an inventive record. If it came out today, it would still sound fresh. RIP Neil Peart.
my first ever time listening to Rush, found it quite interesting and actually liked it.
super enjoyable! Idk what it is that distinguishes this from the other (boring) rock stuff but it feels diverse and interesting
It’s soooo good, an absolute prog heaven. Which might get pretty boring if it’s not a genre you can appreciate. This one is flying to my must-have list. [0132/1001]
Tom Sawyer Limelight
it's good
This is great, truly. However, I always thought Rush was overrated. Geddy’s voice is annoying and Neil Peart is always claimed as the greatest drummer of all time, though he’s surrounded, encased, encapsulated, by a ginormous drum kit. They’re all very talented people, don’t get the wrong idea. And these songs are all innovative. Just not for me. 4/5
A Rush album without any of their long epics is kinda missing some of the experience IMO, still a fantastic album. Almost a 5.
This is an all timer. It’s just a FUN album!!
classic
Powerful band. Great album!
Ahhh, this rating might be unfair just because I KNOW this album and love this album. Tom Sawyer is so good Really enjoyable listen
What a banger! 4.5 stars
liked it, but having heard so much about Neil Peart on the drums, I was looking for a little bit more....YYZ stood out for me and nudges this up a star
front side is absolutely stacked, it's a goat album for a reason, last 3 tracks fit the tone of the overall record but don't hit as hard, no one's made a sound like this before or since including rush themselves.
Dad rock but really great. Definitely brought me back to roadtrips with my dad. No skips
4.5
Solid.
good
Oh my god, another favorite!!! Absolutely love this album and band, happily listening to this one today
Amazing headphones album Gateway to progrock
it was good
I used to think I really disliked this album, but it’s actually mostly the fact that I dislike Tom Sawyer a LOT and that bled into the rest of it. I think all of the big prog bands fared poorly in the transition to the 80s, but Rush probably holds up better than the rest of them. The six non-Tom Sawyer tracks are all bangers.
Good old rock band. Took me back years.
