Reviews (page 6 of 14)

Great album. Neil Peart on drums was just something different.

This was, for me, truly an exercise in separating “objectively bad” from “I don’t like it”. Technically, this is an amazing album. Peart and Lee are absolute monsters! The musicianship on display here is absolutely top shelf…that’s probably why they keep going on and on and on over and over. For a band whose main draw is drums and bass, I do find it kinda odd that the low end is kinda buried in the mix, but that could be a symptom of the times. All that being said, not for me. I’d sooner drag myself through a salt mine on bloody stumps than listen to this again.

really liked this one, Limelight what a great song, feel like i have to give this album 4 stars for that song alone but really all of the tracks on this album were great

Moving Pictures solidifies Rush as one of, if not the best, progressive rock bands. Two of their biggest songs are on this album and they are certified bangers. Their prog rock is also very palatable even for people who don’t like prog rock. Their jams are fun, catchy, and engaging—and have normal run times. I heard their 2112 album a few months ago, and I can definitely hear their progression toward a mainstream sound, which sure made for a good album!

This is a big leap for Rush out of progressive rock and into mainstream hard rock. Their brand of progressive rock had already been more accessible than many bands, but this album took it to the next level. And the result was an absolute music gift -- we got the likes of "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight", two of the decade's greatest rock songs. But really, the entire album is just strong from start to finish.

First album of the 1001. Loved the tracks, moreso the earlier ones of the album which is partially what drops this album down just slightly for me

like it a lot. instrumental fauvorite: red barchetta

I found this album really cool! Top Songs: Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchette

Great album! Great first Album to start this list off with. I’d heard Rush songs before but none of these which feels ridiculous. Particularly liked Witch Hunt and Vital Signs

Great Album. Starts stronger than it ends. About as strong a trio as has ever been

Starting off strong! I already love a lot of the songs on here but excited to get a full a full "picture" painted for me. What a time capsule of music, so futuristic yet of the time. I sometimes felt transported to another word or dimension with the synths and melodic beats. An album that can exists across multiple times and spaces.

Not my typical listen, although that’s probably the whole point of the 1001 albums before you die thing. Album has some classics that I’ve heard before, good length, ended up listening to Rush all day after

Such a fun way to start this album gen! I wasn’t familiar with the band, but hell yeah—that was a GREAT record! I just realized the first track, Tom Sawyer, is their hit. 1. Tom Sawyer – I love the synths before the guitar solo; they’re so eargasmic. I also can’t ignore the bass growl pattern throughout the song—such a nice implementation. 2. Red Barchetta – VERY GOOD PRODUCTION. The segment before the bridge—holy shit—I feel like an 80s rocker. The spacious vocals are incredible too. My favorite track on the album. 3. YYZ – Intermission jumpscare, HAHAHA. This track splits the album in half: the first half is energetic and bumpy, while the second leans more toward ballad-style rock. It sounds like a DBZ boss fight with its aggressive melodic guitars. The immediate pacing changes are absolute chef’s kiss! 4. Limelight – Definitely the start of the second half. It takes a slightly calmer approach, especially in the guitar solo. 5. The Camera Eye – Ten minutes long—this better be worth it (spoiler alert: it is). The alien synths and the arpeggios in the intro are goddamn amazing. The transitions feel divine; I can’t believe I’m still listening to the same song every time one pops off. As it progresses, the cohesion is undeniable. 6. Witch Hunt (Part III of Fear) – Those Pink Floyd-style bells again, hahaha! This was an OK track, but it didn’t really speak to me. 7. Vital Signs – I love the concept—very electronics & communications-inspired. ISTG, they’re so good at shaping their synths and positioning them in this record, especially here. GREAT TRACK! EVERYBODY NEEDS TO DEVIATE FROM THE NORM. Device: Edifier MR5 (Monitoring Mode) Streaming Platform: Apple Music

Good dad music. Most tracks a little lacking in my specific sauce.

Solid Rock album. I can see why it's a classic in their discography.

Progressive, first half is better than second half. YYZ is my favorite track, which is almost a jazz rock track. Gonna give this the benefit of the doubt and round up, 3.5/5.

This was one of the albums I was most excited to listen to on this journey. On this album, Rush just sound like a band that knows what they’re doing. The first half contains some of the most infectious prog out there. Side two is even more ambitious with a sprawling 11 minute track to start and two fantastic songs to finish. It’s masterfully concise, contains dramatic songwriting, and the band performs harmoniously.

bunu begendim

Sounds good ! 7/10

Better than expected, will listen again.

I'm surprised seeing myself enjoying progressive Rock but this is isn't as bad as I thought. For starters it's not a 3-hour album of musical foreplay, which I really appreciate - it's not groundbreaking or crazy but it's good music.

I see Rush as a super nerdy band... And they're very good at it.

not just the filter sweep

Rush is always great

Another review said this is the whitest music ever and I think that's hilarious and hits the nail on the head.

Three letters….Y.Y.Z. Not just the toronto airport code, although the beginning notes are morse code for Y Y Z, but its pure Rush progressive instrumental awesomeness. This is a more radio friendly album, songs like Tom Sawyer & Limelight are familiar examples, it also features more synthesizer which is the beginning of the ultra 80s Rush era. The deep cuts like Witch Hunt are alright, better for background music. Red Barchetta is a staple off this album, its quintessential story-telling Rush lyrics. But YYZ is hands down the best song off of Moving Pictures.

The first half of the album is beyond played out. A great listen but only for a rare occasion.

Perfect prog-pop mix of nostalgia, cheese, and emotion.

consistent vibe but not repetitive tom sawyer hit instantly

Just some good rock innit, not for me though

sounds like a classic

I LOOVEEEE BASSS GUITARRRRR. So good. The album was short.. I love when albums are short and sweet.. this was great

Masterpiece! Amazing production and recording quality, brilliant musicians...all 3 are best in class at what they do!!! I've loved this album since I was a 10 year old kid roller skating at Wheels! Played my vinyl so much shocked it wasn't worn out!

Crisp clear sound. Album art design is excellent.

By far the best album so far. A real collection of great songs.

I do like prog tho

Great songs

Fun, haven't listened to this in years. Went to see Rush on a freebie once, glad I got the chance

oh FUCK yeah dude

High energy, fun instruments, first half was better for me. Fav: yyz, limelight

Missed the album when it was first released, I was living in Italy. I discovered it while visiting the USA in 1984, several tracks were in heavy rotation on rock radio. It became, and still is one of my favorite Rush albums.

♫ Listening to "Tom Sawyer" by Rush (Moving Pictures (Remastered), 1981) ♫ ★★★★

My knowledge of Rush was limited before listening to this. I was just aware of Tom Sawyer and Neal Peart. I think I had heard Limelight before. When this album came up I was a bit underwhelmed at having to listen to it, especially the fact that there was a 10 minute track that had the potential to drag on (something I’m beginning to dislike about this project) Aside from Tom Sawyer, the 10 minute The Camera Eye was the highlight for me. Great album. Will return to and buy if found in the wild.

This is a great classic rock album from Rush! I had a great time listening to this album and I can see why Rush is one of the greats. Overall, I enjoyed this album listen and would listen to this album again soon.

Two absolute classics in Tom Sawyer and limelight. Everything else was fine. 3.5/5 but where does it round to?

Tom Sawyer, YYZ

I used to think "Ton Sawyer" was a Heart song because of the singers voice. All the musicians on this album are excellent especially the bass player. This album really took me by surprise.

Even on the millionth listen, Limelight still rules.

Accomplishes progginess without being too technical or thematically nauseating. Great instrumentation throughout, of course. Red Barchetta outshines the rest - that song feeeeels like you’re driving a red convertible on the open road.

pretty unbeatable side A, loved this album growing up. re-listening reminded me to spend some more time on their 80s material. great transitional album from their 70s sound into their 80s sound.

What can you say? I mean it's Rush. Everyone has heard at least the intro to Tom Sawyer and others know XYZ and Limelight. The rest of the album fits well around it. The instrumentation is tight with three amazing musicians all playing off of one another. It's worth the listen and worth the delve into their other albums!

Rush aren't a band I was familiar with musically. I know them and their rep for being excellent musicians. Listening to this album confirms that at least. I found it much more accessible than I had expected too. Certainly worth a listen and probably quite a good jumping off point for getting into their catalogue.

Slappa da bass! 3.5 rounded up for Canadian pride.

The vocals don't do much for me but it's instrumentally pretty incredible. Fav tracks: YXZ, Limelight. Saved a song: N RYM: Y (#368)

Decent

Truly impressive solos. I think they had a lot of fun recording that album and you can definitely hear that. For just 3 guys they pulled off an amazing sound.

Good stuff.

It’s a classic for a reason, but very different than the stuff I typically listen to. I enjoyed it. Solid B+

So good!

Good album, I've heard a fair amount of these songs before. Liked it overall

I absolutely adore this album. I don't even really listen to a ton of other Rush but I never had the chip on my shoulder about Geddy Lee's voice. This is legitimately on of my favorite albums. Maybe on my desert island 25 or so. That said it ain't perfect and my personal bias aside the last two tracks are weaker than the bulk of the album. It's so damn close to being a "perfect prog album" while still remaining approachable and I don't think I've ever heard anyone give it that due? That's a difficult trick to pull given the nature of the genre. Red barchetta is the standout track for me. As perfect of a story song as I know of. Totally frivolous and fun.

The guitar in this is amazing

8/10 Favorite: Limelight

Kuitenkin nelkkukelkku.

While I dislike Tom Sawyer, the rest of this album is actually pretty great. I was surprised. I've never really listened to Rush beyond the hits that occasionally get played out and about.

Rocking

Rush taking a bit more of a radio-friendly shift on this album, like Limelight, which has a kind of arena rock sound. There's plenty of those radio rock sounds but they manage to retain their own personality, with dynamism like the nice harmonics on Red Barchetta Each member is absurdly good at their instruments. It's not overly flashy or wanky and everybody gets their moment I don't dislike Geddy Lee's voice but it can get a bit tiring, and I get why people don't like it. Om the other hand though, I can't imagine anybody else singing for Rush For me the end of the album could be better. Vital Signs is a bit of a weird closer, the album just kind of stops and that's it Highlights: Red Barchetta, Tom Sawyer, YYZ

good album, enjoyable

This grew on me. Apparently Rush are musical Marmite but this was very middle of the road on first listening. A high 3/low 4, especially ‘Tom Sawyer’, ‘The Camera Eye’ and ‘Witch Hunt’, and I’m feeling generous today :-)

"Tom Sawyer" is so damn good. I believe the synth used is (without looking) the Oberheim OB-X that Geddy uses a lot. Fuckin' love the OB-X. Love "Limelight." Enjoy all the rest as well. Rush makes me feel really comfortable. Even too comfortable for certain company. If I'm alone, Rush is like pajamas and a blanket. Cozy and nerdy and satisfying.

now i understand my father's obsession with this band.

So cheesy but so good. Only Canadians can get away with this. Very mystical at the end of the album. The epitome of nerd rock

Never really listened to anything from Rush before, but this was a nice, fun album. Felt like a nice mix between 80s pop rock and some progressive rock as well, which all meshed well together. The album was also really consistent in quality and sound and didn't drag on too much. Also, what the fuck does evelate mean? Best Song - The Camera Eye

This album was a great listen and a breath of fresh air after a string of bad and mediocre albums. Lyrically fantastic with great musicianship across the board. I will say I wasn't the biggest fan of the vocalist, but my issues with his voice really only applied to a couple of songs. Overall I thought this was a great listen and really enjoyed the back and forth between instrumental jam tracks and the songs containing lyrics. It was a nice way to showcase the talents of all the band members.

I’m scared to rate this 5 stars because in my experience, once an algorithm knows you like Rush that’s all it feeds you.

I’ve never listened to Rush until now and I was very pleasantly surprised at how accessible these songs were for the generally prog epics that they were. Coupled with some incredible musicianship, it makes for a really interesting 40 mins and is one I’ll be looking out for the vinyl of in car boot sales from now on to add to my collection.

I guess I'm old enough to like Rush now! Really cohesive album and enjoyable listen, I'll be checking it out again.

What about the voice of Geddy Lee How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy? I know him and he does

huckleberry bums

Historically I didn't like Rush, Geddy Lee's vocals just kinda annoyed me. However, I've grown a lot since the last time I listened to Rush and I was pleasantly surprised by this record. It opens with "Tom Sawyer", and I'm not sure that there's many opening songs for a record. "Red Barchetta" was a better track than the opener. "YYZ" was my favorite track thus far. "Limelight" is great. It's got a damn good groove and Lee's vocals are the best on the record. Excellent song. "The Camera Eye" is the only true epic on the album and it does not disappoint. Lifeson's guitar work is stellar and Peart's drumming is excellent as always. "Witch Hunt (Part III of Fear) was also pretty good. I really liked "Vital Signs" as well. This record was a very good prog record from the early 80s and kinda made me "get" Rush.

Sauceometer: Upper Borderline Vibe: Relating to/feeling like your father What was I doing: commuting to Work in New York for the first time/taking a walk during my lunch break Favorite Song(s): Tom Sawyer/YYZ

When this came out a friend of mine put it down, claiming the days of prog rock were over. I responded with a noncommittal response while secretly think these guys were brilliant. They have not only stood the test of time, but the first half stakes out their right to the top niche in their genre. good stuff.

A fantastic album, where most of the songs already played on classic rock stations. The only song I'm disappointed with is Camera's Eye, because it sounds too close to part of Red Barchetta, my favorite Rush song. Still, it's always good to listen to. 4/5

A huge concert draw since the mid-1970s, Rush were one of the few progressive-rock acts to successfully respond to new wave. In 1980, the Ontario trio streamlined their sound with seventh studio LP Permanent Waves, which reflected influences such as The Police, Talking Heads, and Peter Gabriel's solo work. It featured “Spirit Of Radio,” an exuberant blend of pop, metal, and ska which showed that lyricist and drummer Neil Peart could write songs with universal themes. The band were also experimenting with nonstandard instrumentation. High-pitched singer and bassist Geddy Lee was now credited with Mini Moog, Oberheim polyphonic, and Taurus pedal synthesizers. He would multitask onstage, using all his limbs to recreate the record’s technological advances. The followup was even more accomplished—notwithstanding the lame visual pun uniting its title and cover photo. Moving Pictures opens with the FM radio staple “Tom Sawyer.” This anthemic ode to individualism stacks virtuoso guitarist Alex Lifeson’s heavy riffs against a gleaming electronic backdrop, while Peart fires off rapid percussion rolls in support. Lee’s melodic vocal illuminates the plea for privacy “Limelight,” while “Vital Signs” marries a dramatic refrain to futurist reggae.” The Camera Eye” sees a return to winding epic mode, but with an urban rather than fantasy setting. Moving Pictures has now been certified quadruple platinum, the biggest selling album of their 30-plus years (and counting) career.

Good album solid riffs nice vocals. Some of it sounds dated but it's great prog rock probably their best album IMO

richtig gut

had heard of before but never listened

Todays Tom Sawyer...mean mean pride!

would be 5 a if not for some bad vocals, i loved the instrumentals.. very unique in a good way

Very good record that was an integral part of my youth. Didn't have any single song that was the equal of "Spirit of Radio" (nor does anyone else), but showed how ready they were to depart on a new journey that was heavily influenced by the Police. The last record of their golden era before they became covered in synths.

2025-10-15: I made a mistake listening to this album sore and tired: I spent quite a bit of time thinking that I should stop, take a shower and get something to eat and drink, and then get back to it; but I didn't. Some songs felt a little too long or perhaps repetitive, but even so I wasn't quite wishing them to end. Familiarity and nostalgia with the type of music upped the score, which might have been higher if my head had been in a better place … or maybe, just maybe, lower if it hadn't been upped by echoes of the past.

Okay, Rush, I’m sold. For the longest time, I was kind of put off by them. Maybe it was Geddy Lee’s falsetto that didn’t sit right with me, or maybe it was some of his comments about other musicians leaning too much into fantasy. Whatever the reason, I never really gave them the chance they deserved. But Moving Pictures changed that. This album is solid. I get why they have such hardcore fans now. Lee’s bass lines are phenomenal, Neil Peart’s drumming is on another level, and the whole band plays with such precision that it’s almost impossible not to get swept up in it. It’s also no accident that this is often considered Rush’s masterpiece. Their most polished, focused, and accessible album. It balances progressive rock complexity with arena-ready hooks, making it not just a high point in their catalog but maybe one of the defining rock albums of the early ’80s.

Seems like young people from this era got broken up into two different groups, you were either into psychedelic rock like The Grateful Dead, Doors, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Floyd or you went the way of getting drunk at parties and were more likely to listen to Rush, AC/DC, Yes, Three Dog Night. I grew up with the first group but the second group received more radio time. So of course I was familiar with half this Rush Album. I get the attraction. These are outstanding musicians making some really rocking tunes. At the end of the day I’m just not in love with Geddy Lee’s vocals. I don’t dislike it, but it’s not an album of first choice. That’s why it gets 4 stars.

Not a Rush fan but I can see the skills.

YYZ GH2 PTSD

Excellent from the album artwork through the last song.

I've already known "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight". For the rest of the album I maybe need some more runs to get used to it. Nonetheless an interesting introduction and not an easy decision between three and four stars. 3,5

To my mind, this is the peak of prog rock, along with King Crimson's "In the Court of King Crimson". Maybe because it's a bit more accessible than a lot of others. Yes, it's "math rock" but also a bit more radio friendly. This is a great entry point for the genre. For those who want something a bit more traditional of the genre, the amazing "YYZ" is a major standout and doesn't disappoint.

I enjoyed this one even more the second time through.

This was my older brother's favorite band growing up, and I never really gave them a chance, even after learning about Neil Peart and knowing that I should have listened to them. Well, I was missing out. They rock pretty hard, and while I don't think I'll be going back to this (one of those bands where I can't understand what anyone is saying...) I do feel I missed out on some good teenage bangers.

excellent album.

Already liked Tom Sawyer and Limelight going into this, rest of the album is a mix of good and bad, the camera eye goes on a bit too long for what it is and yvz ain't great.

Pretty interesting and love the really long build ups. Very good and shutout to Canada. Favourite Song: The Camera Eye Honourable Mention: YYZ

interesting. pretty good

My mind was blown as a child, in the way a child's mind is apt to be blown, when I understood the triple entendre of the title: yes, the moving crew is literally moving pictures on the cover, and also films are colloquially called moving pictures, and, when a film is particularly emotionally affecting, well, that's a moving picture! And this is quite the cinematic record, living in the limelight, under the sharp focus of the city's camera eye. Anyway: very nostalgic album for me, having chiefly experienced it when I was a kid (my last.fm has my last full listen to the album in 2009, when I was 13?!). Still feel like I know it beat-for-beat, and I've certainly absorbed many of these songs in the half-a-life-plus I've lived since, through media and radio and being around my dad. Side A is perfect, the rest I could take or leave. I'd be happy if I never had to fly through YYZ again. Which is to say I support Doug Ford's planned expropriation of Toronto Island and subsequent Billy Bishop Airport expansion.

These guys never miss!

Almost perfect. I love this shit. Straight to the point!

I don't think it's possible to hate Rush. Even if it's not your thing, it's still good.

Incredibly impressive instrumentals and vocals, had a lot of fun listening to this. My favourite song was The Camera Eye.

Mostly instrumentals, but then they’re famous limelight, and Tom Sawyer

4.5 actually. Good flow and good songs

I like doing this project because I find out that Rush is actually a really fun band despite some weird bias I had in my brain they’d just be some other rock group on the list.

Certainly a rock classic with some great songs but just not in the same league as classic bands like Zepplein,

Solid classic rock album.

Short and sweet. Limelight was definitely the best song on the album. Despite it's short duration it jad a lot of variety.

I don’t think I 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 five minute instrumental stretches, but I respect it. Some absolutely great tunes on this record. Best Track: Limelight

Probably Rush’s best album. Not a big Rush fan but this has Limelight, YYZ, and Tom S Sawyer.

Interesting and fun

I thought it could of had 5 potential. Maybe if I listened to it more

неожиданно приятный альбом. интересный вокал. и даже инструментальные отступления в тему. найс

Awesome album, Cameras Eye is a sleeper. Solid 4.3/5

Good group.

Interesting album, rock with new experimental elements. Also has a meaningful message conveyed in typical weed smoking rock ways.

Classic album

So tight. Incredible drums.

Great album with some great songs, very relaxing listen

é galera esse aqui é bom mas realmente, tem um ladinho hard rock meio chato

Groovy

Er varierende resultater når prog beveger seg inn i new wave-land, men her funker det svært godt.

Prog-Rock Libertarians with wonky time signatures, excellent writing and overall musicianship. What's not to love?

Already listened to. I love Rush and I love this album. "Limelight" is my favorite song off this album, I think.

1. Tom Sawyer - 11 An all time classic. Guitars fit so nicely between the lines of lyrics in the opening verse before they all join in with the drum creating an excellent transition into the chorus. Lyrically the song is so insanely strong. The tone shifts are not something I'm a fan but they're so measured and eased into on this track it makes it work to perfection. Gem of a song. 2. Red Barchetta - 8 Solid track, especially instrumentally. The guitar in the middle part of the track is very good, even if it's drowned out the lyrics. Overall, a good track. 3. YYZ - 8 Solid sounding track. Important to note this is a purely instrumental track and that there are no vocals on it at all. Having noted that, it's a great sound but a bit all over the place at times. Still, a solid track. 4. Limelight - 9 Guitars sound excellent on this track but it's the drums that really shine. They are fantastic and it culminates with excellent vocals and lyrics. Very solid track. 5. The Camera Eye - 7 Alright song with a great bridge into the outro but the track goes on to long and isn't lyrically strong enough to justify eleven minutes. Instrumentally it's good and the drums and guitar lead it well. Without the ending solo it's a 5 out of 10. 6. Witch Hunt - 8 Solid track. The drum and guitars have an excellent sound that compliment each other the whole way and guide the constant tone of the lyrics perfectly. Just a fantastic track. 7. Vital Signs - 8 I don't like the intro to the track but once you get past that part it's solid. A tad too repetitive at times, the guitar and bass are superb on this album and really help the track become quite enjoyable. Drum is as ever so excellent on this track as it is on the rest of the album. Average Rating: 8.43 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 4.21 Rounded Down: 4 Stars

It was good. Synthy. Better than i remember. Reminds me of pa.

40 minutes of great music. My favorite Rush album, by far. Great stuff. 3.75 / 5 stars = 4 stars

Love Rush! This doesn't disappoint.

What a drummer.

Pretty chill calm. Comfortable

The hits were amazing, but I don't find a lot of the other stuff all that accessible.

Rush’s best work, 40 minutes of musical mastery

This is perfect timing to review a Rush album, since the band just announced a huge, "Fifty Something tour" across America, their first since drummer, Neil Peart passed away in 2020. I can't say I'm a big Rush fan, but they have a special place in my heart for being the first (big arena) concert I ever attended. They aren't known as a band with hit singles, but some tracks off of Moving Pictures are as close as they come. These tracks and this album broke them to fans outside of Canada and Americans can't get enough of the song, Tom Sawyer. The only Rush album I own (okay, I taped it) is Permanent Waves, their previous release and I thought it was pretty decent. Moving Pictures is better, but I don't know if it's their best because honestly, I've only listened to albums pre-Moving Pictures, so I'm missing out on 31 years of album releases. If I get a free ticket for their tour I'll go and I'll bet plenty of songs from this album from 44 years ago, will be represented. No post-2000 stuff, please.

3.7 Better than I remember Rush being. I've never really good into the vocals, but really enjoyed some of the instrumentation here that I made myself get over it and hear it for what it is. It feels like 70s/80s version of Tool, which is high acclaim. Might explore more in future

Woah! A tight 7 song album, I really like the mystical quality to the tracks. An epic, synthy sci-fi journey. My favorite track was the instrumental “YYZ” into “Limelight,” though was also impressed by the album’s kickoff, “Tom Sawyer.” Would need to be in the right mood to put this on — a late night road trip or maybe house cleaning session — but it’s got sticking power. Also I love the triple pun of the album artwork

Tom Sawyer is a classic Overall solid nothing insanely great but i enjoyed it. between a 3 and 4 out of 5 for me.

really good instrumentals but for most of the music, i’m not fond of the voice

Pretty good.

Epic prog-rock that puts an equal emphasis on big hooks, guitar heroics, and complex, orchestrated songs. "Tom Sawyer" is such a banger of an opening track. Glancing at the Wikipedia, that song wasn't released as the first single, which means most people put this record on and heard that song fresh for the first time in that moment. I can't imagine how incredible that must have felt as a Rush fan. "Limelight" is another classic rock radio staple. And I honestly enjoyed every other song here. I'm not a big Rush fan, so this was great to hear a tight 40-minute album of excellent music from them. That dub/reggae bounce on "Vital Signs" was a surprise. It's almost a Police song.

4 out of 5. Guitar Hero flashback aside this was good time. Say what you will about Rush but so far their albums have been an experience.

Loved this album

Yea good eh

Okayyy prog rock era a bittt!! While his voice isnt my all time fave i appreciated this album because led to a great prog rock discussion with my dad. Tom Sawyer I knew and already liked and the synths in this album are cool and so 80s which i love! YYZ is my other fave - fully instrumental and naming it after their airport is GENIUS it so gives rushing thru security to get to your gate on time! Fully just instrumental rock music with no vocals is really growing in me i really appreciate it while im doing day to day things! Great change of pace for me as im about a week into this challenge and i have loved hearing so much new music already!!!!

It's RUSH. It's Moving Pictures. It's arguably the best side a in Prog Rick history. Does it sustain all the way through? To my ears, no. But still a banging fucking album.

Very good album! The quality eventually declines, but it's still a great album!

When I was a kid I thought Tom Sawyer sounded like the coolest song in the world. I still feel that way at 25

Its the quintessential rush to most people and i think it mostly lives up to the title. The first half is insane. Just line up the hits and profit. Good stuff. After that it kinda looses me a bit. Just long ass songs. But its still decent. The playing on the whole record is top notch. Just some of the best at the time doing it the best. Getty is a bass machine. Neal bangs em out like hell. And the guitar guy who I always forget put up some catchy and fun riffs. Just a solid good time all around.

Pretty great

4.5 Stars Guitar work is legendary Neil Peart is god Rush is incredible

Woah, details later. This album is incredible for an entirely nofa reason.

This was great. Took me a kitt bit of effort personally to see past some of the sound design choices. It all feels very 80s and very metal in a try hard way. That voice is a very distinct sound too and when there are so many strong choices it can get hard to really listen to the music itself. So much great progressive imaginative creations though. Yyz is ear catching and then so good. Track 2 is a beautiful progression between something poppier and the avant garde. Never thought before how they must have influenced coheed and cambria.

A very good album, overall. I'd say almost a 5, if it were for a song or two that didn't hit; they mainly didn't work just because they were too long. The sound presented here is just so fantastic, Rush knows how to construct a song and execute it in a way that's interesting. Favorite songs: Tom Sawyer YYZ Limelight Witch Hunt

I like this so much more than the last one, there's less dreadful Robert Plant rip-off singing. Looks like they took some inspiration from people like King Crimson and Siouxsie and the Banshees, the latter only on a few songs, but still there imo. Some of the synth bits are quite cheesy, like the flangers in the first song, I just don't think those have aged well. But I do really like some of the synths, like the modulated filter thing on the really long song. The long song also feels like a proper, developing song, rather than the long one on the other album, which just felt like 7 or so songs without boundaries. I'm still have quite mixed feelings about the vocals, which are fine in places, but a bit annoying at times. Some of the distorted guitar parts feel quite different, a lot more like some of the 90s grunge/pop. Favourite songs: all of them. Overall around 7/10

Something actually good by Rush? Wild

Honestly I've always slept on rush and never given them a proper listen. I think the vocal performance never did it for me and that's kind of the first thing you hear. Damn shame though, this album is sick AF

Enjoyable listening. A couple of good/classic songs. 4+ stars, but not quite a 5.

me gusta el rock progresivo asi con toques pesados y esos sintetizadores le le dan el toque

Rush refine their progressive roots into something sharper, smarter, and more streamlined on 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴. The album blends complex musicianship with radio-ready structure, delivering career highlights like the explosive 𝘛𝘰𝘮 𝘚𝘢𝘸𝘺𝘦𝘳, the instrumental masterclass 𝘠𝘠𝘡, and the introspective 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. Not every track hits equally (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘌𝘺𝘦 feels overlong), but this is Rush at their most balanced and accessible. A defining moment in prog rock’s evolution.

Fantastic album. The drumming is superb. Standout tracks are: Tom Sawyer, Limelight, & YYZ. Cool artwork as well. 1001 album worthy: Yes - 100/184

What a Rush!

This might be the only Rush album I really like. Blown away by many of the songs.

Three first-rate tracks – don't need to say which – but the rest is mostly meh (one's sixth-grade self was right to skip those mostly). On the upside, there are Shakespearean and Twain references and a steady resistance to the most common prog pitfalls (noodling into blind alleys and black holes). On the downside, there are the mostly odious politics (on which, do we really need their guidance?) and, relatedly, they seem to have come to consider Ayn Rand's a great writer. Still three great songs and pure, warm sixth-grade musical enthusiasm feels sustained, when Shakespeare just beginning to matter and well before Ayn Rand would have done. Editors are right: cover is "a lame visual pun."

4/5. It’s Rush, man. Canadian royalty. Funny how even though I haven’t listened to a lot of Rush I have such strong memories of avid Rush fans. They really do inspire such devotion from their fans. I like the thoughtful lyrics, the vocals.

Canada's finest prog rock. This is a good album. "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" were the lead singles from this album, and I'm going to start with them. "Tom Sawyer" is a great opening track and a great track in general. I think lyrics are a weak point for this song, but the musical tracks are just fantastic and Geddy Lee's singing is really fun. It's just a classic. "Limelight" has a lot of the same elements that make "Tom Sawyer" so great, and in isolation I'd probably like "Limelight" a lot more. But the way the tracks are ordered on 'Moving Pictures' puts "Limelight" right after the instrumental "YYZ", which is a far more complex, dynamic and exciting track for me. By comparison, "Limelight" feels very simple and poppy, almost like a musical theater number. But what cannot be denied of this or any Rush song is the quality and tightness of the production and instrument-playing. Other than "YYZ" mentioned above, my favorite track on this album is "Camera Eye". This is the only song on this record to get what I think the album as a whole suffers from: room for the songs to space out and breathe. This is the only major complaint I have about 'Moving Pictures'. An average runtime of ~4:30 per song on a classic prog rock album is just crazy to me. And they don't all need to be 11 minutes like "Camera Eye"... but 4:30?!?! When you listen to "Camera Eye", in my opinion, it becomes evident that allowing the other songs on this album to expand a bit more would probably make them better. The remainder of side two, especially "Vital Signs", is also quite strong. The low point of this album for me is "Red Barchetta" from side 1. Overall, I think this is a very good album, but I don't know if I quite feel that it enters the pantheon of all-time prog rock greatness that many seem to place it in.

I wanted to skip my graduation to see Rush. I made the mistake of telling my Mom what I was going to do. You would have thought I ran over Grandma she was so mad. She was mad about it until I walked with my class. I still regret not going to the show. That said Rush is amazing and this album is one of their best. This is one of those classic albums that most of it is played on classic rock stations damn near every day. If you enjoy this look up the song Subdivisions from the album after this.

Good album, better than expected

Never really liked it growing up and glad I gave it another listen. This is a great album showcasing the diversity and creativity of the trio.

Good to listen to while doing something that doesn’t require your 100% attention

Драйвовый альбом, слушается отлично. 7,5 из 10.

So many outstanding songs on one album!

A lot of gems on this album that I was already familiar with but hadn't listened to in a long time. These guys have the impressive ability to write a catchy tune and also perform it with virtuosic technical skills without it seeming like they are only showing off how good they are.

classic

8.5/10 Mesmerizing basslines make for a very pleasant listening experience. There is not a single bad track on here.Whats missing for me is a song thats truly exciting or evocative beyond just sounding good. If Subdivisions or Marathon had been on here it would have been an easy 5. Now its a very high 4. Highlights: Tom Sawyer The Camera Eye YYZ Limelight Witch Hunt

I'm a casual fan of Rush at best. But there is no denying these guys' technical prowess as musicians. True Rush fans would disagree, but this is the only album of theirs I consider essential. 4/5 #98

Grave cool j’ai beaucoup aimé. Du rock qui part un peu en couilles par moments

Favorites: Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight Everything that Rush touches is just magic, and while I didn't expect to like Moving Pictures all that much on relisten, it still holds up as one of the most engaging prog records of the 80s. Maybe one of the best rock records of the 80s as well!

The only Rush album I like for the singles + the prog rock madness.

Superb guitar solo, bass backing, drum work and keyboard/synth sections, Tom Sawyer GOES VERY HARD. Many other tunes are close, but don’t quite reach the heights of Tom Sawyer. Red Barchetta had the neat harmonics section at the end, along with the synths. The Camera Eye was quite repetitive and dull compared to the wicked tracks on the first half of the album, that was until the solo at the end, which was good, but not enough to redeem the other 10 minutes of the track. Witch Hunt, very unique start for a song on this album, decent change of pace and sound. Great album overall. Highlights: Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta

https://youtu.be/Eh_9NY56Sxw?si=uwUJkatpxoeH7fiG

On first couple listens I didn't enjoy a single track here, on the third listen it kind of clicked, there's catchy energetic loops that really get your head to bop. Probably worth way more of my time but I've been in a bit of a music rut at the moment. So ima put a pin in it and return. 7/10

I don't like to associate with people who don't like Rush. They're weird. 4/5.5

I was familiar with about half of these songs, and was happy to find the ones I didn't already know were really good.

Great band, great album

Another 4.5/5. Just a song or so away from being a 5.

tom sawyer

Classic

I’m not the biggest Rush fan, but this seems like the album where they put their collective talents together and curbed their excesses in service (mostly) of tight and condensed and very good songs that would shape their status as FM rock radio titans. This album also appears in a dorky Venn diagram of two related personal interests: the incursion of the synthesizer into classic rock (see also: Baba O’Riley) and the soundtrack of the heyday of video game arcades. Last observation: “Vital Signs” sounds like Rush’s take on The Police.

Here's where votes might get polarized. Rush, you love 'em or hate 'em. Maybe hate is too strong of a word. These three were probably the nicest 3 people in music. Anyhow, I'm a fan. As with most of Rush's output: ridiculous lyrics, ridiculously good drumming (and guitar, and bass) = ridiculously fun.

This album has all of the crazy musicality that Rush is famous for, but compared to the last album of theirs we listened to on this project, this one is much more structured and accessible. Like when the nerds have to dumb it down to be understood by their less-gifted peers, I guess. This album was both interesting and enjoyable to hear and one I could see myself returning to again.

This album for the most part is a Neil Peart drum clinic. I mean the other musicians sound great and of course Geddy is an incredible bass player, but Neil really steals the show. RIP. Tom Sawyer is a theatrical and musical masterpiece and really the first four songs of this album bring it to a 4 on their own. A group of music nerds exploring music theory and getting digestible jams out of it. Btw Geddy Lee has an autobiogtaphy on Spotify called 'My Effin Life'.

Just looking at this makes me feel like a kid. What a 1981 time capsule this is. Kinda nerdy, kinda awesome. On the verge of music and technology merging but not there yet, it was still mysterious. It’s Kerry Von Eric coming to the ring on a Saturday morning. It’s a cheap video on MTV while you are cereal. It’s what you put in your Walkman when you ride your bike. It a complete unique sound that feels very male in hindsight. Before it was classic rock it was awesome. Eventually someone’s older brother told them YYZ was the Toronto airport and the lyrics in limelight were from Shakespeare and you felt smarter. Unverified knowledge was early 80s currency and this is the soundtrack. I want to give it 5 but the last 3 tracks a rough.

The Rush album I know most of. Fun prog rock.

This is rock. Good music, definitely better than the mid range stuff that pops up pretty frequently. It's probably more of a 3.5 though.

Moving pictures is one of the first rock albums I ever listened to, and influenced my taste like few other albums did. I still love it today, even tho I think Rush got a better album, maybe 2

Gotta say I hated it far less than I expected to. I’m not a huge fan of early prog, but “Limelight”, “YYZ” and even the longwinded “The Camera Eye” had me tapping my hands on the desk more than other albums I’d listened to on here. Shame it opens with “Tom Saywer” I do not understand the fascination with that song

one of the inspirations for my drum playing

A great prog rock album. Still holds up as a weird album too. Rush was always a weird band to me, I didn't love Geddy's voice, but the instrumentals are top tier. This album has "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" which are probably the two most well known Rush songs. "Witch Hunt" is another great one. Solid album, worth at least 4 stars.

4.1 2x classics and good album

Rush brings it.

Shorter album but all the songs hit well. Solid.

Pretty cool.

Enjoyed this! Easy to work to

I mean, yeah

What a difference five years makes. On 1976’s 2112 Rush were offering up an album which could act as a neat introduction to prog rock, something enjoyable and gentle that could get you into the genre. By the time they get to Moving Pictures they are masters in their field crafting big, overbold melodies which shoot along with palpable force. Quick proggy changes from one idea to another, one key to another, one time signature to another never feel anything less than fully developed and cohesive. They have a vision bolstering each song which allows you as a listener to fully immerse yourself and be taken for a ride. The band have sat together and worked out what makes each track tick, yet it never feels anything less than a singular fluid machine. If 2112 is an album which could get you into prog, Moving Pictures is an album which could get you fanatical about it.

strange rhythm, but still good example of 70-80s music

Makes me want to check them out a bit more. Ayn Rand fandom is a bummer, but apparently he has later understood it's ties to fascism

This album fuckin roooockkks. Favorite Rush record by far. Play it loud

The camera eye was fire

Great, sags towards the end - Witch Hunt does nothing for me, Vital Signs never gets into top gear but still enjoyable and Camera Eye is a bit drawn out but not so much so to be unlikeable.

Tom Sawyer/limelight are obviously amazing but geddy Lee kind of overwhelms me after a bit. YYZ I was really suprised by. Bass rips and almost feels like heavy metals at times. Albums great

Caress of Steel fans are to Rush fans, what Rush fans are to normal people. Caress of Steel is my favourite Rush album, but this one is definitely in their top 50%. Following on from Permanent Waves, these songs are more concise than their '70s work - effortlessy blending prog complications with pop hooks and arena rock riffs. Great production and tones, great performances, great lyrics - great album, but not my favourite from Rush! Favourite tracks: Red Barchetta, The Camera Eye, Limelight, Witch Hunt

I never really liked Rush. Couldn’t stand the vocals and the songs never really caught me. Gave this a fair chance and honestly it’s pretty great. Tight, dynamic, cool rhythms and licks. Complex yet catchy. Vocals are still unbearable. Four stars.

Heard it

Classic Rush. Fantastic staple in rock and roll. Upon an unbiased listen, the hits are huge, but the album didn't hit with me like I recall. Maybe if I do this project again it will get a 5 but not today.

Love Rush. I believe this was their best. Reminds me of my college years whenever I hear it!

Good. Probably the definition of good

A lot better than expected it to be

Technically excellent, but not super interesting.

Wow 2nd Rush album in under a week. Moving Pictures is a much better album than 2112. Lifeline and Tom Sawyer was the standouts.

Beautiful album, lots of great uses of random instruments and sounds. the use of making sure the bass was heard in a few of the songs was a great added touch. overall a great album

A prog rock classic. I have to disclose I have nostalgia for this album because the radio in my first car didn’t work and I had two CDs, A Van Halen album and this one, so I may be biased. This album I think had a good balance of instrumental and voiced songs as well as riffs that were interesting and unique but not offensive or too experimental like other prog rock albums. An easy to listen to, fun album with some amazing drums throughout. 8/10 Top Tracks: Tom Sawyer, YYZ

Really liked this album actually. Starts off with a banger in Tom Sawyer and the vibe is quite good throughout. Made me want to lift old metal weights in a garage iron claw style. I can see why someone would hate this though. Specific rating- 4.3 Fav song- Tom Sawyer Least fav- witch hunt

Obsessed with the fact YYZ is named that because it's the Toronto airport code. Also there's a bit in Vital Signs that sounds identical to so american by Olivia Rodrigo which I love (obviously it's actually that so american sounds like vital signs but I heard them the wrong way round). Favourite: Vital Signs Least: Tom Sawyer

Great album by rush. Excellent instrumentals and long journeys of songs

Today I learned that basically every Rush song I know is on Moving Pictures. “Tom Sawyer,” “Limelight,” “YYZ” — all bangers, all on the same album. This one’s packed with tight musicianship, weird time signatures, and just enough nerdy charm to make it work. I’m not the world’s biggest Rush fan, but even I have to admit this album slaps. Favorite song: “Red Barchetta”

better than i thought it would be

Today's Tom Sawyeee? Absolutely!

Do you want to listen to some music that has some good drums? Well in Tom Sawyer you can! I rate this song ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want listen to some music that has a lot of drums? Well in YYZ you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that as some good drums? Well in Limelight you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song.

the first song is good i like the guitar and the drums sound really good i also like how all the instruments sound together i also like how the words are said there is not much more to say about this song its good though i like it. the next song is good i like how it sounds at the start with the guitar and the drums i really like how much instrumentals there are compared to how much singing there is. the last song is good i like the start of it with the guitar i also like the drums and stuff there is not much more to say It's just a good song. overall this album was good i would recommend it.

Damn, thats a great album as well. I dont know if I will listen to it again but it is nice to listen to.

such a sick album. I had no clue that the main riff for YYZ is actually Morse code for "YYZ" -- the airport code for their native Canada airport.

Hell yeah Rush is sick. Not every song on this album live up to the status of YYZ or Tom Sawyer, but overall a good listen.

It's good

Great songs throughout, some feel a little dated

From music perspective is a great record. I enjoy several pieces of it, some of them i really found great. Not for everybody (what is good for everybody after all?)

Tom Sawyer was one of those songs I had heard in passing and liked but never knew the name of. So glad I found it! The rest of the album is just as awesome! Very cool to listen of headphones with.

There's a lot of storytelling in this album. I reall enjoyed it, despite not usually being into listening to lyrics. 10/10 would listen to this again. I'm missing a bit of musical variety to give it the full 5 stars, as my mind did keep drifting off

This is a standout Rush album. Soooo great and a classic. I still can't believe they are a three piece band. Literally not a bad track here. Actual rating....4.5. Liked Songs: "Tom Sawyer" , "Red Barchetta" , "YYZ" , "Limelight" , "Witch Hunt" , "Vital Signs"

First half is a 5, second half is a 3. The best part is I don’t have to hear their baby brained political takes on this

Best Rush album in my opinion.

Fun and innovative. The voice is a little annoying

About as perfect of a Side A as it gets. Side B kind of drags a bit, but still an amazing album.

Un puto clásico el mejor disco que me ha salido hasta ahora. Reyes del progresivo, jinetes de la anacrusa, en resumen: los mejores

The opening riff of “Limelight” immediately puts me in a good mood, always. First 4 tracks are heavy hitters and latter 3 were all new for me. Who knew about Rush’s epic “The Camera Eye?!” I wonder if that’s what inspired Billy Corgan to name his song “CameraEye,” though very different. So much has been documented about this album and it makes sense: they found a harmonious connection between prog and pop. Would return for many listens.

Hell yeah Rush

First time listening to Rush. I really appreciate the musical trio and their technical progginess - I just can’t help but hate the vocals. Kept thinking of this lyric from Pavement: What about the voice of Geddy Lee How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?

I liked limelight and Tom Sawyer, I do think it is a great album but it’s not exactly to my taste and the songs are a little long. I would give it 7.5

Look, Moving Pictures was Rush figuring it all out perfectly. They made smart, complex rock that somehow everyone got into and bought. The downsides? Pretty small, and mostly just about whether you preferred their earlier stuff or got tired of hearing "Tom Sawyer." It's not about the album messing up. It's just the sound of the band totally killing it at their peak. Definitely a must-listen for any rock fan – it's a huge, undeniable classic.

A classic from Rush's golden era. Tight, musical, and full of melody.

I know the album by heart. Mostly because a friend liked it though

Great first album to listen too for Rush's discography.

i mean, its Rush. one of the best rock trios of all time. YYZ and Tom Sawyer are absolute banging tracks. shout out to guitar hero for those ones. i really want to give this a four, but i feel like its more like a three for me. its rocks, but it doesn't stick out all that much. when i listen to this album, it doesn't hit me quite the same way as like Boston or another hard rock album. i am going to end on the four, and promise to re-listen. it may have also been because i had a very stressful Friday when I was listening to it. all that to say, Rush does rock and i want to give them more chances / listen to more of them.

YYZ brought me back to the days of Guitar Hero. Other than that, I don’t think I knew any songs but they were all really good. My only reason to not giving 5 stars is that I wish the singing was more present and impressive. It wasn’t bad, but just sounded like another instrument at best.

A short and sweet album that has two of the most recognizable prog rock songs of all time on it. The length coming in at just under 40 minutes also helps with not getting lost in a longer album. I enjoyed this one a lot more than our first Rush album.

Rush is a lot of fun when they're playing a song you know! When they're playing a song you don't know, it can get pretty monotonous.

Całkiem solidny album. Podobały mi się teksty. Bez zmian, ulubiony utwór to "Witch Hunt"

Good album, not Rush's best IMO but OK

I don't even like Rush that much, but even I had to turn up "Tom Sawyer" and leave it loud for the rest of the album. I listen to too much actual (growling) metal to whine about Geddy Lee's voice, but I know it's not great. This has real highs and lows (mainly the fact that I still don't fundamentally love Rush), but I'll make this my highest ranked Rush album.

I was introduced to Rush by a drummer in the early 2000... That says something. Mike Portnoy from Yellow Matter Custard said: " Tom Sawyer is the greatest air drums song of all time". Yes Rush music is drums driven and the rest seems negligible. Alex Lifeson can ripp off amazing guitar work, I will still listen to the drums. To Neil Peart, one of the great.

Some songs I really liked, others were just pleasant background music. This project has taught me that I kinda like prog rock! This is probably like a 3.75 from me, so I'll bump it up to 4 stars.

Not a band I've ever really got into or listened to much but this was a very pleasant surprise.

This was pretty good.

M'han gasato

what's not to like

rush rocks

I cant stand Getty Lee's voice. And generally dont like rush. But that was pretty good. I think their most popular songs might be thr worst ones

My rating of In The Court Of The Crimson King basically applies to this album as well. I think I prefer this one though, Rush have a really great way of doing upbeat sounding prog and it just sticks in the mind more. The album as a whole has more memorable riffs and is more consistent.

I don't know much about Rush but this seems like a good first album. Tom Sawyer is great and shows what they can do at their best. There's some cool prog breakdowns in this and it got me pretty amped for my bike ride.

I secretly love a bit of Rush, they should be a lot of things I don't like about 80s rock but there's so much good in there too.

This sounds like an arcade game!

Already familiar with a few of the tracks on this album. It was good to listen to it in its entirety. Rush always remind me of The Limelight & 2112 rock clubs in Crewe where I hung out sometimes in my youth, so this was a bit nostalgic to hear.

I only really know Rush because of my favorite movie ever, "I Love You, Man," with Paul Rudd (my bitch) and Jason Segel (also my bitch). They do "Tom Sawyer"! It rocks! Also, shout out to "Waterslide" by the Bonedaddys, which is another GREAT pick from that movie's soundtrack. Also, Pavement's Geddy Lee line -- "What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy." "I know him, and he does." "And you're my fact-checkin' cuz." So adorable! And his voice IS very high. Almost comically so. This is a cool album cover and I like Tom Sawyer, so I think I will like this album. And I do -- I found myself thinking "Wow, this is REALLY good" a lot and I do think I'll listen to this album again. Many times, maybe. I don't know how much I like Geddy Lee's ridiculous voice, but it's ok, I think it'll grow on me. Red Barchetta was fire. 4.5 ish?

Such fenominal music from only 3 band members.

Geddy’s voice is a net negative, but it’s not unlistenable. The album is pretty entertaining.

Enjoyed it!

The nerds got something right here

I'm a reluctant fan.

I dig it.
