Reviews (page 13 of 13)

off with your head💅 sounds like chrwches however you spell it (not good)

Two great songs followed by eight mediocre ones.

Some of the tunes were catchy but I didn't love it

Highlights: "Heads Will Roll," "Zero," "Shame and Fortune" The Siouxsie and the Banshees cover band get a makeover with sterile '00s club sounds. Thrill as the frontwoman bludgeons you to death with repetitive yowling over sleepwalking pentatonic exercises. Guaranteed you've never heard this much vocal fry in life. But fear not! It's also mostly interminable straight-to-commercial adolescent ballads. Awful. Mistakenly put here for its hit single.

Fun, very listenable, art-dance-noise-punk mix.

Zero: love the sinth bass 16th notes entrance, wish it went a little harder Heads will roll: heard this song before. I feel like I want it to be good but after hearing it once I'm usually fine going another long stint before I hear it again Soft shock: I like the singing, I like the sinth, I like the drums, and all the little add ons, but together its not my vibe. I think its too simple. Im not excited to hear the next verse cause I already kind of know thats its gonna be the same Skeletons: I usually judge songs fairly heavily on their intros, and so far these intros make me think its gonna be a reasonably good/creative and varying or atleast catchy song, but i keep getting let down Dull life: this is much better. This is much more what I want from this artist. The intro was super good, and it only got better from there. Much more energy and creativity in my opinion Shame and fortune: really like the shakers in the backround. Solid song Runaway: this is a good one. Love the layering. Wish it exploded a little more towards the end Dragon queen: its pretty ok. Just want more from the song Hysteric: Little shadow: I feel like this is 2 stars. dull life was the only song I really liked in this album. Kind of a let down

Not for me

Couple of decent tracks. Off key vocals get repetitive after a while.

Dull, but not actively bad. I just kept waiting for the song to start!

Apart from the first two songs this record was just average indie pop. I was hoping for more

Couldn’t get into this one. I did like the acoustic version of Hysteric though.

Filled with synth-pop indie rock tracks. Lead singer’s voice is good.

This is the second album of theirs that I have gotten, and I found both to be pretty mediocre and uninspiring. I'm not a fan of the music or the singer's voice/vocal style. Just not for me.

Not my cup of tea

Kind of bland and boring. Once was more than enough

Did not click with me at all. I can see how other people enjoy it though.

not my thing

So you’ve got “Heads will roll” here that I feel like everyone knows, and is pretty decent. As for the rest of the album, just your usual loud punk rock that I’m not really a fan of

Boring dirge. 4/10

Yeah, it's kinda chill, the singer giving me some Santigold vibes at the start, but yeah, just doesn't hold yeah attention for the whole thing, yeah know? So yeah, a good listen if yeah in the right mood. 2/5 yeahs

It was okay. Would not choose to relisten.

Nah nah nahs

Heads will roll toppen, resten sådär

A couple of catchy tunes at the start, and then this settles down, and I feel like I know what I am going to get from this. Quirky electronic pop with guitars, basically. The voice works, but I don't like it, if that makes sense? Perhaps a bit one-dimensional and not that expressive? Also 58 minutes long is too long. They try to mix it up with a few slower songs, but these were not as compelling as the full-throttle pop tunes. Just the one Yeah from me.

This sounded incredibly tinny. Maybe it was the streaming via my AirPods that forgot abut the bass? I'm such a music snob. My War Against Pop means I have no room for this. There's absolutely no soul. It's such a cold album. Not a bad record, but not my style. I bailed after seven tracks.

Pretty average

Ik zei nog zo.. géén vrouwen !

- third album by indie pop / synth band the yeah yeah yeahs - most of it was written in the studio in a collaborative way - singer karen o’s signature vocal style - sort of disinterested, slurred, but can get impactful when it calls for it - this album is…. fine - theres some really good songs and then a bunch of forgettable melodramatic ones fav - zero - love the energy and vocal delivery, highlight of the album least fav - skeletons - melodramatic and kinda painful to listen to 2.5/5

bellissima e famosissima 'Heads will roll'

Heads will roll on hyvä biisi

Loved the 1st three tunes then the album sort of lost its way and everything blended together.

Somehow missed this band and opted to spend my short attention span in the 2000s on The Strokes as THE American indie, pop rock Ersatz instead. What's there to say? This album is danceable. It's nostalgic. It's fun. It's sad. There's all the emotions in an album. But there's a reason I hadn't heard it before, and it's because it's missing the je ne sais quoi. Is Karon O's vocal ability too smooth? Is the musicality of it all too bland? What's compelling me to care? Fave tracks: Zero, Faces. Finish and start with a bang!

It’s very of it’s time. “Edgy” hipster rock that thinks it’s more powerful and meaningful than it actually is. A short-lived fad.

Not their strongest. I much preferred their looser earlier style. The sequenced nature of the synths betrayed that on this record.

Yeah Yeah Yeah's Synth Punk from 2009. Singles: ------------------------------------ Zero (#7 US Sales, #18 US Alt, #49 UK) Heads Will Roll (#5 US Sales, #1 US Dance, #89 UK) Skeletons Standouts: Skeletons Others: Zero, Head Will Roll, Soft Shock, Runaway, Little Shadow Rating: 2.5

I know this band for "Maps" and that's about it. Not a bad album, but really not much that stood out to me. I agree with Alex that it's probably not one that should be on this list. If the album with "Maps" is on here, that I'd understand more. But we'll see if and when we get there. Favorite tracks: Hysteric. Album art: Pretty cool action shot of someone squeezing the life out of an egg. My favorite part of the album for sure. 2.5/5

Pitchfork-bait.

Ok - nothing too exciting really, even the bangers are a bit dull by now

It’s wacky but I wasn’t feelin this wack

There wasn't really anything special about it to me except for the fact that I didn't recognize Heads Will Roll until it played.

leuk poppy album, veel verschillende genres

Not the best I've heard

Saul gone 😔 but this sounded good, excited to try the new one in September

Yeah Yeah Yeahs' *Fever To Tell* was my second favorite album of 2003, a year that was admittedly short on great albums by my count: apart from The White Stripes breaking out into the mainstream, and The Strokes, Mogwai, Grandaddy or Broadcast doing their thing, there was not much going on in terms of *truly* exciting stuff. Oh, 50 Cents hit the charts, too--I guess *this* was fun, even though everyone with half a brain at the time knew that sort of thing would age poorly, as fun as it was to hear on the spot. Those dreadful naughts... It all went down to the drain for a lot of music starting from that year. At least, Yeah Yeah Yeahs sounded *fresh*, unruly and untamed with their NYC garage aesthetics. *That* was a breath of fresh air, before going to the long apnea of the decade that ensued (not that folks with decent music tastes knew such decade would be *that* dreadful at the time--for one, I would have taken a *larger* breath had I known). Fast forward to 2009. After a half-baked sophomore effort, Yeah Yeah Yeahs attempt a grand comeback, with the help of usually great producer Nick Launay and TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek. You can't really blame the intentions of all those nice, usually talented people (including the band themselves): they wanted the band to be relevant again, which meant that the sound of this record *had to* move forward compared to previous ones. But there's a snag: as this team gathered all their forces to do so, they totally *neutered* what made Yeah Yeah Yeahs great in the first place. We could go on with the details here, but we'll just stick to *one* symptomatic issue: Karen O's voice. In too many places of this *other* half-baked record, she sounds literally short of breath, which takes the cake knowing what she can do as a singer. Yes, there are a few thoughtful arrangements in those songs, some of whom are decently written, I guess, in spite of some predictable shenanigans in them. But such benefits come with a price, and the price is extremely high here. Those production values are indeed nothing but a gilded cage for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they sound as if they're wild exotic birds imprisoned in it, and frankly, it makes me feel very sad for them. The cover sure seems to suggest you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. But when it comes to this band, I prefer my eggs sunny side up, and NOT that messy, shapeless blob of a record, Grammy nomination notwithstanding. On the positive side of things, there are two ballads on the record, "Skeletons" and "Runaway" that might be worth taking a detour to. But anyone who loved "Maps" on the first album knows those nice tunes can't compete with their obvious model here. As those fans know none of the livelier cuts on *It's Blitz* can either compete with the ones on the first LP. It's especially clear when you listen to the overtly *terrible* three last tracks, displaying everything that's hackneyed about textbook late naughts production (faux-groovy, disco-like rhythm sections, overtly polite synth and guitar licks, bland vocal parts--the list could go on...). This sort of thing can still give some dated charm to Phoenix or Gossip, I imagine. But for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it just doesn't work at all. But I imagine that I shouldn't sound so surprised by this debacle taking way too much attention to the fashionable sounds of those days... 2009 was indeed another dreadful year for music fans. Apart from Animal Collective breaking into the mainstream--er... let me correct that: "finding critical consensus by default"--well, apart from that, what was going on in terms of exciting stuff? Not much, it seems. Fortunately, things slowly got a little better once we entered the 2010s. But that's a story for another time, kiddies... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 839 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory: 89 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 39 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important: 34 (including this one)

The singer is very good at copying that style of female singing that we have been hearing everywhere for the past 20 years or so? (Like ripped up jeans, when will it be going away???) There were some interesting parts, just didn't move me to feel anything but slight annoyance.

It was okay, not really my cup of tea.

Ehhh It's ok kinda boring and bland to be honest. There earlier stuff is much better, too much generic synth-pop on this one.

Haven't really ever been a fan of the yeahs. I think Karen O has a good voice and they make some fun sounds but her lyrics kill me. The acoustic part of the album seemed a bit more enjoyable.

Really enjoyed the first two tracks from the album but it fell off from there for me and became very repetitive tone wise that almost put me to sleep. Wanted more punk

Some good tracks like heads will roll and shame and fortune mixed in with some full ones

2.9 - I’m missing the buzzsaw guitars. Karen O has given herself a broader and quieter palette to explore adult feelings. Mostly songs like “Soft Shock” tread water in a liminal space. I wonder if most of these songs are ever going to go somewhere and then the strings swell and they’re over. Humph. And there’s that atrocious “Off with his head!” song that saturated every Spotify playlist I listened to for the past decade. The album ends on a high with the gorgeous “Hysteric” and “Little Shadow” but by that point I’m all but checked out.

Thought it was a bit annoying

Niet heel erg spannend.

Completely forgettable just like the other album from them on this list. Please don't let there be a third. I don't get it. There's other bands that can do what they are going for so much better. At least Fever To Tell had Maps. This has...nothing that I can really remember. Just like I said on the other album: Karen O has a solid voice, but they just can't seem to write good songs for her to sing. Not the bottom of the barrel, but it ain't good.

This is so of its time. Written in the studio, this is a triumph of digital editing and slick production. Nick Launay brings his excellent taste and great ears to create a slick and (vaguely) dance-able aesthetic, much more sophisticated than the 3-piece punk vibe that the band brings. The album is front-loaded with the singles, although I like some of the rockier tracks that follow, eg Dull Life (which is reminiscent of Siouxsie and the Banshees) or Shame and Fortune. After all is said and done, I don’t really remember any of the tracks once they finish playing. I prefer it when they don’t veer too far from their punk roots. I really like her voice, though.

Why is this on the list? There are much better albums from Yeah Yeah Yeahs that are more deserving. This one loses me after the first couple of tracks.

Not really something I'd listen to on my own for fun. And honestly I find rock/pop like this boring, sorry

This was a boring release compared to their first album. The production was sterile, and all the tones were frigid cold.

I had high hopes, but sadly this album just didn't do it for me. It sounds like most other glam rock albums without bringing anything new to the table. The songs themselves are pretty forgetful. 2/5

“Attitudes, tones, put-on sneers, and audible grins.” Whatever.

Light up beat album. Kind of fun. Not sure it's my kind of music. Never heard it before this listen.

Yawn. "Heads Will Roll" is a great song; always enjoyed. But this is the epitome of a 1 hit wonder. The rest of the album all sounds the same. I will give it 2 stars, only because I am feeling generous.

Right. The dude who compiled this 1001 list thing is an idiot. Out of all the albums that exist, he chose to include this one? (Eh, this album isn't terrible; it's just a mediocre album that's come along at a time in my torturous journey through a list of music compiled by a guy who clearly has no experience or taste and has only serendipitously hit upon actually good albums.)

Not ready for nostalgia for this kind of stuff just yet

Seems pretty good. 2/5

It’s mediocre at best. It’s vor allem zu lang.

Opens strong, then drops off heavily. I don't get the cult of personality around Karen O and don't like the sound of her voice: enunciate more, yelp less.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, but I know a couple of their albums alright. Nothing here stood out compared to their other stuff.

Meh Meh Mehs

Basis of most of the songs are really good but they never do anything with them so gets very samey.

3 good tracks

Nota: 3/10

Relatively enjoyable. Kinda slow at times, really enjoyed the more upbeat stuff.

It’s ok. Nothing that really moved me. As I was listening a song came on that was really good … but I realized album was over and Spotify had suggested me an Arcade Fire tune. So 2.5 stars, which I’ll round down

Uno bop

It's fine, nothing I'd listen to that often.

A little bit boring. A single song was worth it for me

Didn't listen to it all, but might revisit.

This is a good album, it has a strong open and very good close. The middle lost me for a bit but luckily the ending pulled things together. I didn’t hate listening to it but I also didn’t enjoy it the whole time

That late 2000's were a pit for music. This is representative some of the better released. Needed to be on this list?

First two songs are good (Heads will roll is top tier) but then it drops off and is okay but nothing spectacular

This isn't awful but it's pretty boring. Basic indie rock for basic hipsters. like if you thought the strokes was a bit too dangerous, maybe you'd like this. I dunno, not for me. 2/5.

the OG heads will roll. just wasn't my vibe

Boring. All Build Up and No Payoff. Big disappointment after Fever to Tell.

Not my type :(

This album was boring me since the beginning. 💦 I was considering skipping it completely, but I gave it a chance. Runaway is the only song that impressed me. 💗💗💗 Faces and Little Shadow also caught my attention, but that's about it. Nevertheless, I'm glad I gave this album a chance. 😊I like the cover🥚🥚 Thank you 💛

Meh meh meh

Two YEAH YEAH YEAHS albums on the list is insane! More disposable dreck from a band that is not essential in any way, shape or form. As throwaway as any music released in the last 50 years. Sometimes I really hate this project and the book it's based on.

Music to be bored by.

j'ai pas ecouté jusqu'à là

i dont really care for it

I remember when Yeah Yeah Yeahs came out and they were played on the radio. But they never grabbed me at the time. So, let's see how this goes. Oh yeah, they have that "Zero" song. What the heck does "shake it like a ladder to the sun" mean?? Oh yeah, they also have that "Off with your head, dance til your dead" song. Ugh - really didn't like that one. I think on both these opening songs they only lasted a couple of minutes on the radio before I changed the station. Not a good start. Maybe the rest of the album is better than the radio songs. Only song I liked was "Shame and Fortune" - it has a cool sound. The rest of these were either annoying or boring/forgettable to me. Funny how that 1 song that I liked has the least plays on Spotify of any song on this album - clearly I am not aligned with the rest of the fans of this band. Thinking this band isn't for me. Liked songs on Spotify: 1/10 Rating: 1/5

Awful. Like being continually slapped across the face with a plastic spatula. I put up with it for three tracks and was losing the will to live.

Definitely bored listening to this

"Heads Will Roll"❤️

Ok not my jam

Im sorry this is so bad I genuinely cannot listen to it oh my gosh

25th album with group. I wonder if Fever to Tell was this bad, and I just wasn’t critical enough. Good Songs - Dull Life. Bad Songs - Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock, Skeletons, Shame and Fortune, Runaway, Dragon Queen, Hysteric, and Little Shadow.

Nog for me

Not a fan. It seems I should be, but I didn't hear anything that I liked.

Grauenhaft!

Don't mind some of their other stuff, really didn't rate this

I did try, but it’s really not very good, at best poor. I listened to some Urban Voodoo Machine afterwards to make myself feel much better.

I'm pretty sure Dull Life was the Dammit riff from blink182

Insupportable

not for me tbh

Did not engage me and I'm unlikely to revisit it.

Sometimes a bit cringe but otherwise great

Crappy singer who is very thankful for tech, backed by very good musicians. Poor guys.

👎🏻

Not my thing at all. Too noisy lol

Once again there are parts I can appreciate but just not for me. 1

Why this group again?

was not cohesive or melodic enough for me to want to listen to it again. 1.5

I don't like it

Not my kind of thing. All felt like background music. Favourite song Runaway.

dance-y pop stuff with some weird new age bullshit-sounding lyrics and imagery. Bleh.

Not for me

Usually, I try to write a more in depth review when I listen to albums. But, this album sucked. It was torture to listen to. At least, I know the title of the song that was playing during Halloween when I was working at Savers.

I quite enjoyed the first track, and it all went downhill from there. The vocals started to grate. By the time we got to "skeletons", I'd had enough. Oh... and the electronic "bagpipes" on that track were the final straw. It's a 1.

Wow, what a generic and underwhelming album for my birthday! Despite their Spotify introduction, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are neither "alchemic," "transformative," nor "magical." Happy adulthood, I guess :/

Meh except “Runaway” is pretty good 1001 album worthy: Nah - 5/9

1. zero - 1 2. headz - 1 3. zoft - 1.5 4. zkeletonz - 1 5. life - 1 6. zhame - 0 7. runauuay - 1 8. dragon - 0 9. hyzteric - 1 10. zhadouu - 1.5

This sucked except Dance Till Your Dead or whatever.

Tiny winky

8====D

Yeah yeah

Alternative band of the early 00’s. No great music in my opinion.

The only thing that kept me listening was to see if there was a reason that this had been included in the list. Difficult to find one.

It's not a very memorable album, is it? Except for the lyrics, the songs pretty much sound the same.

Repetitive and unpleasantly so.

Album sucks just like all their other ones.

This has absolutely no business being on here.

Godawful shite.

Yeah yeah lala Pop ohne Sinn und Verstand, Allerweltsstimme, Not my taste

Did not enjoy

did not enjoy at all

I am suing Yeah Yeah Yeahs for auditory castration.

Sadly not my thing

Good but not for me. ;=(

Would not let me listen. Couldn't figure it out and didn't like the album cover so....

Its ok - not into girly music from back in the day

Just meh

these fuckers get another album? really? mmm eggy flower not a red rose or a satin heart i give you an egg it is a moon wrapped in white paper it promises egg love is like an egg etc by carol anne duffy

2/10 for me

Not really into this type of music

Meh. Not a fan.

I already didn't like their other album on this list (I hope there's "only" two) and this one is even worse.

initial thoughts: okay so heads will roll is the exception definitely … much more indie psychedelic rather than pop and that’s a surprise. fav off album: heads will roll

I don’t think I liked a single song on this album. Some I didn’t mind, and some got on my nerves extremely. Songs were simplistic. So was the guitar playing: very boring. In fact no one in the band could play very well on their instrument except maybe the drummer. A lot of annoying moments. This is what music sounds like when untalented people want to be cool. Liked the last two songs’ vibes, but the underlying music was just soooo boring.

Not my bag

Not their greatest, only like a few tracks

No me gusta nada

Weak 808 pop, might re-listen to two songs but I wouldn’t bet on it

Not for me

Indie genérico

Listen later

Love this one.

so good! i love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and it's easy to see how this album is on this list. SOLID
