I liked the bowie cover, "lake of fire", and "plateau". I listened to the studio version of "something in the water" and liked it way better than the live version. I want to listen to their studio albums.

Nirvana was never nowhere close to as good as they got credit for. This album is no different. There are two great tracks on this album, but both Bowie and Lead Belly nailed them on the originals, so what's the point?

De cara já digo que, embora seja considera por muitos obra-prima do Nirvana, não é o melhor disco para se apresentar alguém que nunca ouviu a banda antes. Das 14 músicas do repertório, 6 são covers/versões de outras canções. Das 8 restantes, apenas 3 eu já tinha escutado previamente. Hoje sabemos que foi uma escolha do Kurt em optar por músicas menos conhecidas do cancioneiro da banda. Também senti uma falta de peso/preenchimento na equalização (?) nas primeiras músicas, o que se arrumou ao decorrer do álbum. Sobre a execução, tenho a impressão de que o Kurt está sofrendo para cantar todas as músicas. A voz dele parece que não chega onde tem que chegar, mas ainda assim ele continua tentando entregar. Já na parte instrumental, achei tudo bem completo e redondo, apenas senti falta do peso do baixo em algumas músicas, principalmente nas primeiras. As músicas não me empolgaram, embora algumas tenham chamado atenção. - "Come As You Are" ficou um arranjo bem legal, embora tenha sentido falta do peso do baixo nela. - "The Man Who Sold the World" é decente, embora eu prefira muito mais o original de David Bowie. Parece que faltou preenchimento nela não só de equalização, mas principalmente de instrumentação. Tinha potencial. - "Something in the Way" tem um ar bem soturno e ficou bem fiel à versão original. Das originais do Nirvana foi a melhor execução instrumental e vocal. - "On Me" e "Lake of Fire", ambos cover do Meat Puppets, tem uma das progressões mais legais, mas é nítido um desânimo na voz do Kurt. - "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", que também é um cover, pra mim é o ápice do álbum e a melhor performance do Kurt em todo o disco. Pena que tenha sido apenas na última música. O disco tem uma proposta decente. Se a ordem das músicas fossem rearranjadas, alguns outros elementos musicais fossem incluídos, e o Kurt não parecesse tão sofrido ao cantar (ou até mesmo desanimado), pra mim o álbum poderia ser bem mais marcante. Acho que isso vale pra tudo o que já ouvi do Nirvana: a história e o marco que deixaram é mais legal do que a execução em si. Triste, porque o grunge é um período que gosto muito na música.
2 stars. Not a bad album, but it doesn't work for me. The three songs I enjoyed aren't enough to make me sit through all of it. Also the fact that Kurt keeps saying "I'm gonna butcher this song" is so fucking annoying. Like, brother, just play the damn song and let us decide (he butchered most of them). About a Girl: A song that works better when you're a teen with a guitar trying to bang that one chick that wears way too much mascara. Come As You Are: The opening riff for this one is the first thing I learned to play on Guitar to impress that one chick that wears way too much mascara. Jesus Doesn't Want Me For a Sunbean: I always skipped this one and now I remember why ♡ The Man Who Sold The World: Amazing Rendition of a Great Song. Wish Seu Jorge had recorded it for Life Aquatic sessions. Pennyroyal Tea: Not a big fan of the rendition, but a good song nonetheless Dumb: 🤷🏽 ♡ Polly: This song is so fucking good. His voice lends itself perfectly for the tone of the song. On a Plain: Every Nirvana song sounds like you're 12 and this is deep. "The finest day I've ever had is when I learned to smile on command" Bottom Text ♡ Something in the Way: Although I disagree with the morals of consuming sea creatures, I must admit this song is a banger. Plateau: Ranking high on "First songs I learned as a Teenager". His voice is not really suited for this song. Oh Me: Pretty forgettable track. Lake of Fire: Yee Haw. All Apologies: I really can't vibe with songs that are so "omg i'm not like the others". It's like they lack self awareness, idk. Not my thing Where Did You Sleep Last Night: Nirvana is just Falcão for people who know what depression is.
I know Nirvana is an important group in the history of music. However, I think I would have enjoyed this more if I liked Nirvana more. I know this person wasn't the original singer but I can't get past the vocals: very nasal, raspy, and flat. 2/5 I will not be back to listen.
I know this was a critically acclaimed event and got tons of coverage back in the day... but I just don't like live albums... nor Nirvana... That said, compared to the other live albums I've had to endure on this list (and Nirvana's In Utero), this is slightly more tolerable... so I'll be generous and give it a 2...
I don't really like Nirvana. Their sound is too abrasive for me personally, and Cobain's vocals are both ugly sounding and unintelligible, rendering the lyrics moot. Hearing Nirvana playing an acoustic(ish) set makes their instrumentation less abrasive, and I actually quite like how the guitars sound on this album. But Cobain's vocals are the greater problem here, and are as awful as they always have been. I think this album is as well regarded as it is mainly because of his death, which occurred not long after this was recorded. It's nothing special as a listening experience

It all just feels very high school band. Lyrics are very poor. Kurt’s voice does have the right level of raspiness to it in some songs which adds a good texture to the songs. The fact that this has such a high rating makes me feel like I’m missing something. But I don’t think I want to find whatever it is I’m missing. I’m happy not really enjoying this album

I do not own this album but I’ve heard it many times over. I was influenced greatly by the new grunge sounds of the early 90s. This album was a little shocking, due to the song choice and what their normal sound was. It preceded Kurt Cobian’s death by a short time. I’d rather remember Nirvana for the plugged in sound.
Every now and again one of these songs hits it out of the park but I'm kinda lukewarm on the project as a whole

Influential, important, historic. I still don't like Nirvana at all and I find Cobain's voice annoying. Borderline 1 or 2 stars for me.
The Lead Belly and Bowie covers are excellent, but there’s nothing in the other songs vocally or musically that is terribly interesting or impressively-performed. I understand why it’s been so reveled, given that it came out after Kurt’s death, but I don’t think it’s deserving of the hype and critical claim.
I didn't actually get all that far through this album so sorry if my opinions are wildly off for the second half of the album but the first couple of songs all sounded exactly the same and made me wish I was listening to a better nirvana song

I've not really been a great fan of Nirvana, maybe cynically, I think they can ascribe much of their fame and subsequent record sales on the untimely death of Kurt. This album breaks no new ground, is replete with cover versions and imo only made it to the top 1000 because it was the first to be relesed after the above mentioned unfortunate event.
Warning: hot take ahead! This kind of punk rock does not translate well to acoustic. The heavy distorted guitars tie together Kurt's raspy, strained vocals and give the music the energy it needs. I think completely restructured their instrumentation of the songs, maybe adding some more piano or strings or something, it would have worked for me. It's like they're trying to highlight Kurt's vocals over any instrument. His vocals are definitely not the highlight of Nirvana's music. Eerything just sounds sad and very slow. It literally sounds like a mediocre band that you might hear playing in the corner of a dive bar. Kurt was somehow able to develop an aura of illustrious musical genius after his death. IMO, if he didn't kill himself, his fame would have faded over the years and he wouldn't be more famous than 3 Doors Down or something. It also helps that he's hunky.
Angsty, as expected from Nirvana, but lyrics are intelligible. Limited guitar chords or melody. A bit musically monotonous, but lyrically more interesting, something that is hard to appreciate on Nevermind.

I’m giving it two stars because the band sounded like themselves at least while playing live. That said, I’ve never understood the popularity of this whining and navel gazing. These songs are neither fun nor well written, and certainly not well performed in my opinion.
I’ll preface with I’m not much of a fan of Nirvana. I find most of the time the unplugged guitar tone just didn’t sound very good. Maybe I don’t like unplugged concerts or their tone just wasn’t what I was looking for. I don’t like Cobain’s vocals that much, he also mumbles a good bit which I find frustrating at times. The writing often feels simple to me, simple chords with nothing too special structure-wise as far as I can tell or feel. It didn’t have a great start. The first song sounds like a grungy early Beatles song. There were a couple songs I enjoyed throughout the middle, with catchy guitar hooks of decent melodies. The banter between tracks was funny, especially Cobain’s “shut up”. I think Nirvana just really isn’t for me and this album couldn’t convince me otherwise.

From the rendition of "Something in the Way" to the haunting "Pennyroyal Tea" and the heartbreaking "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," each track on this album is delivered with emotion but feels more watered down compared to the actual album versions. MTV Unplugged in New York is where Nirvana transition from their signature grunge sound to a more stripped-down acoustic sound. Did not appreciate the raw vocals very much.
I very rarely care for live albums with audience interactions and this was not one of the few where I would. And I can't help but think that the reviews of this are more of a wishes for Nirvana to actually produce a studio album with this semi acoustic sound and the nostalgia for it. Combining with the fact that the covers, especially the Bowie one, were the best songs, I just can't hold this to the same standard as "regular" albums on this list.

Best not listen to when already depressed. Although a good album, Nirvana and MTV were unhappy with the performance.
Usually love Unplugged for what it is, but I dunno what it was about this one that didn't excite me. I know Nirvana is a "thing" but Kurt's vocals sounded a little put-on and less genuine. Everything else was pretty average.
ok i like nirvana but this was just awful. at many songs his voice became completely unbearable and it just sounded so terrible. the songs just do not sound good this version. of course i was familiar with many songs by they sounded so different in a bad way
Prefer this to their studio / ‘plugged’ recordings. Nice version of Man Who. But find the angst of their own songs a bit hard to listen to. I guess you had to be there but they don’t really speak to me. Also not a fan of Cobain’s voice.

Equally enjoying as enjoyable. Kurt literally murders some songs with his nasally grunge whine. The conversation to acoustic takes out the fun and excitement of what make nirvana great. That said some nice turns great Bowie cover and sounded genuinely distressed in where did sleep last night. Overall bit of a miss for a great band.
I get it Nirvana deeply impacted rock music and briefly lead the horde of flannel and boot wearing, distortion/overdrive guitar playing grunge bands. This sparsely produced live acoustic album sought to be an astounding awakening for the "I'm 14 and this is deep" audience by dialing down the heavy noise and highlighting Kurt Cobain's lyrical/melodic/vocal intimacy. Of course, it's deeply impacting, but this format always came across as a gimmicky shill. The genius of Nirvana is finding that intimacy as sweaty flannel boot guys are stage diving onto your face.

yeah... I don't think Nirvana is for me. I like some of the instrumentals but I don't really like Kurt's voice and a lot of the songs are too stripped down for me. Ultimately pretty bored by this one.

Yeah, I was in middle school too, like any one else. But with 20 years to reflect I can confidently say this album sucks shit. The whole reason I listened to Nirvana was for the hard rock noise that would soon become the staple of classic rock stations. Not for folky cover songs.

Unplugged more like un good. I’ve never really gotten into nirvana or grunge in general and this live set with all the energizing electric sounds removed certainly didn’t change my mind. Plateau here is genuinely one of the worst vocal performances I’ve heard.

Hot take: this wouldn't have been as popular if Kurt hadn't died a couple of months after this aired. This isn't even the best MTV Unplugged album, "nevermind" that it's not even the best Nirvana album. 1/5 Pearl Jam unplugged should have made the list instead.

This demonstrates what I already suspected - that under all the noise and oversaturated amps Nirvana is just an amateur band. It sounds like a wedding band but the lead singer was too drunk to sing so the guitarist is filling in for him (even though he's also drunk).

I don't understand the concept of live albums, and I despise this band. I'd give it a 0 if I could.
The most overrated band of all time doing unplugged versions of their sloppy covers and original noises. How we got Dave Grohl from this wreckage is a miracle no historian has been able to explain. It was nice of Pat Smear to show up to this and help out with a tuned guitar, because Kurt wasn't going to do that. And that guy simply cannot sing. He'd be cut off and kicked out of a townie bar's karaoke night where they put up with the burned out town bicycle who thinks her cigarette coated vocal chords sound like Janis Joplin. Simply awful, and this nonsense where we have to pretend Nirvana is something to be reverent toward is absolute trash. F-

Teško da postoji bend koji mi izaziva veću nervozu od Nirvane, iz dna duše ih ne mogu čuti. Možda se Radiohead približava toj razini hejta, ali oni mi barem nisu iskakali iz paštete cijeli život. Po meni je Nirvana jako overrated i nikad nisam (!) razumjela ljude koji ih aktivno slušaju. Probala sam slušati nakon dugo godina otklanjanja sama sebe iz svake situacije gdje sam ih prisiljena slušati, ali jednostavno ne mogu. Jbg, znala sam da će biti tu i da će doći taj trenutak. I can't stand Nirvana. This album does nothing to change that. Kurt's guitar is out of tune. Somebody's guitar gets run through overdrive, completely defying the spirit of "unplugged." I'm sure it was all about "they can't tell us what to do!" which completely missed the point of the unplugged exercise, which is to set up a limitation that requires creativity to get around. The best song on here is the Bowie cover, and even that is hard to listen to because of the vocals. 1 star.

I thought MAYBE live acoustic Nirvana might be better- NOPE. First off it’s not really unplugged, just mostly unplugged, which makes sense because you’ve gotta have real chips to play without amplification. Secondly, unplugged or not it doesn’t really matter since Nirvana songs all sound like a whiney soy boy trying to pass a watermelon.

Sorry Nirvana, but I think you need the grungy electric sound back to hide poor playing and off-tune signing. Giving "being held hostage by a white guy with a guitar at a party" vibes. Couldn't get through the album.
Having never been much of a Nirvana listener or even admirer, this was a tougher sell still. I should not have come into the album expecting to unravel some softer, more intimate side of this much revered band. This is certainly highly rated, provided you already like these songs and Kurt Cobain's atrocious vocals that to a disinterested consumer sound close to that Puddle of Mudd cover of Nirvana. Dumb hot take, but that is how I feel.

The musical artists I listen to I want to be truly artists…not “artists”. Nothing artistic going on here. Bad sounding guitars poorly played, melody apparently optional, words that are not deep but seemingly the stupid hallucinated rantings of a drug addled brain. One of the best live albums of all time? C’mon!!

I gave it as open minded a listen as possible, but I’m sorry: it was dull then, and it’s still dull now. The best facet of the band from an instrumental perspective is Grohl’s drumming, which isn’t a factor here. The best riffs belong to the Meat Puppets (credited) and Killing Joke (famously not credited). And the best music in general is made by those less interested in becoming a cadaver.

I love this album. But, as I've been clear and consistent about it before, live albums are essentially a collection of other songs from other albums, in which case, "The Best of ..." deserves consideration for this list of albums. The rating is not a reflection of the quality of artists or the music.
Nirvana is a band that doesn't even deserve to have one album on this list, let alone three. And one of them is this, a live album (because two whole studio albums weren't enough, apparently) that sounds even more boring and lethargic than the studio versions. Some of the covers were okay, but those were written by other people, so I can't give Nirvana credit for them.

I never have come close to connecting with the jarring amelodic chord changes, the not-interesting and bad/sloppy guitar playing, and... the distractingly awful vocals. And that was for the studio-produced albums where you can polish up a turd so to speak, so having put it in an acoustic format.... ugh. The first few songs are fine in a "ehh..." kind of way then when Kurt Cobain starts wailing...I cannot. His voice makes me want to hurt myself. I remember watching this on MTV when it was first televised, trying even then to tap into something. In the "competition" during the birth of grunge (admittedly silly, all that) gimme Pearl Jam every damn time. I do not like. 2/10 1 star.

not only was this a live album 🤢 but it was a bad one too. his voice was just irritable and painful to listen to. overall pretty disappointing. I really like the last track though, all the other songs lacked that passion and interest. boo
