Reviews (page 14 of 15)

I really liked Nevermind and back in the day, I was a very big fan of Nirvana. But this is not very good Nirvana. At the time there was some kind of coolness about not wanting to be doing the thing that you were doing, especially if what you were doing was something that a lot of people liked. Listening to this now - there are a few tracks that are really strong performances but man... a lot of it is also a drag. I don't need to hear every one of these tracks. Kurt didn't want to do this. And I don't want to listen to it.

Gives hope to all of us bums with out-of-tune acoustic guitars! Listenable, if not quite as remarkable as legend has it. Both 'The Man Who Sold the World' and especially 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' crackle with menace and verve, but there are a few moments here that fade into the background. Still, a cool record of an undoubtedly landmark moment. Acoustic and semi-acoustic shows by full bands are quite the norm now, in big part due to the Unplugged series.

Very overrated. I guess the roughness is what makes it so great. The way you can hear Cobains insecurity I guess. It's pretty sad. "I'm definitely gonna mess this up" Followed by "That sounded good" and someone saying "Shut up" wtf Well I'm not the biggest fan of grunge either. 3

Was alright!

Thought this was going to be bollocks but it wasn’t it was alright

Chora demais esse Kurt

As much as I don't gel with their music, their talent is undeniable. What I really enjoyed was hearing their banter, just how funny Kurt actually was, getting to hear them cover some really interesting songs, and how his sound is suited so well for that intimate setting; I'm sure the people in the room will remember it forever. Still, it's not an album I'd see myself ever going back to and I didn't add any of the songs. But, I'm very glad that I listened to it, none the less.

Nice live album by Nirvana. One of the few live ones that are enjoyable. Helps that this is more an acoustic event. Either way the songs are good and the covers are what make this album it’s own. 7.4/10

I have never really listened to Nirvana, and this being the full first album I’ve listened to from them felt somewhat repetitive and slow. I still enjoyed it enough to be able to give more of their music a chance.

Excellent live album with great musicianship, but it's strongest as a showcase of Kurt Cobain's deep love for music.

Bowie-cover upea.

I like the less grungy sound as an acoustic outfit, but it highlights the fact that there isn’t a lot of range in the song-writing – the phrasing in Polly, Dumb and On a Plain sounds very familiar. The contrast of the more rootsy Meat Puppets numbers is nice and the version of Man Who Sold the World is great.

A live album. Very much not appreciated lmao

Classic Nirvana. Lots of hits but wasn't entirely in the mood. Fun sound.

For the first time, I think, I listened to this while trying to separate it from the contrast with their studio records and take it as itself. The performance itself is just okay, pretty ragged at times (and I'm not just talking about the IDGAF of grunge in general; the guy's in bad shape). I suspect the knowledge of Cobain's fate shortly after this colors all interpretation and I'm no different. There are some brilliant ones in here. (All Apologies, Lake of Fire, WDYSLN). But I disagree with the "greatest live albums of all time" designation.

I think Nirvana was a very good band, but I also think they were incredibly overrated. (Yes, it is possible to think both those things at the same time.) Maybe if they had stuck around for more than 3 albums they could have earned their way among the all-time greats, but alas they did not. This album is a good, solid album. The acoustic sound goes well with Kurt's voice and with some of the songs chosen for this. Highlights are the David Bowie cover The Man Who Sold the World and the closer Where Did You Sleep Last Night. 3 stars.

Un poco aburrido

Never understood the fuss about Nirvana. Some fairly good songs on this album (by the way, describing it as "unplugged" is stretching it somewhat. "A bit quieter" would be a better description) but all of them have exactly the same structure, so it all sounds very samey.

Kurt still unconvincing for me

Have probably listened to this more than thier studio albums over the years. It's a nice record and it has the feel of the band enjoying themselves. A few standout cover tracks are the highlight for me.

For a while now, it has been trendy to wax poetic over how wonderful this record is. It's not all that. There is nothing to be gained from listening to the acoustic versions of studio cuts About A Girl, Come As You Are, Pennyroyal Tea, Dumb, Polly, On A Plain, etc. No new depths are plumbed, nothing interesting is revealed about the songs. The value of MTV Unplugged In New York is in the covers, most of which are fantastic and rightfully celebrated. They are a showcase for Kurt Cobain's interpretive skills and savvy, which are impressive. Who knew? On Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam, he resists melodrama, almost like a grunge James Taylor, with a deceptively deadpan performance. For his next trick, he improves on Bowie--no small feat--cutting to the heart of the lyrics with tightly coiled restraint. Cobain blows the Meat Puppets out of the water with his interpretations of a trio of tunes from Meat Puppets II, revealing nuances of meaning and melody that were barely there before. But the biggest revelation is Leadbelly's Where Did You Sleep Last Night, where Cobain unleashes a climactic howl of anguish that chills me to the bone every time I think about it, let alone hear it. Although I prefer the music on Mark Lanegan's version, Kurt's vocal is definitive. Kurt's covers are so amazing here, I wish he hadn't bothered with originals. That album would have been a 4.5 at least.

Very few live records really work for me, but this one does admirably. I don't have this huge love for Nirvana, but an Unplugged album can be legit.

This was good.

I find it pretty boring. This is the first album that i listened of Nirvana, and i was left dissapointed.

Good songs but meh delivery

3.5 classic, vocals a bit rough live

I'm not a big Nirvana fan, but I know this album is meant to be a classic. And it was pretty good. Not my most favourite album that I've listened to, but it was definitely not bad. The standout songs for me were Something In The Way and Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam.

It’s good. Doesn’t grab me. I ain’t a tween.

I would give it a 3.5

Not even their greatest hits live. If anything it made me want to revisit their back catalogue.

Some great moments throughout but does drag on a bit in the middle.

Alright

Unplugged was such a big 90s thing. Pretty cool there was a major cable network effort to strip down popular music and expose the underlying songwriting and poetry. It's almost taken for granted now with so many youtube outlets (NPR Tiny Desk). I don't think Aerosmith was pulling out the acoustic bass and delivering a sparing rendition of Dream On in the 70s, although that would've been a treat. I've never been a Nirvana guy. I wanted to be a Nirvana guy, especially when I first moved to the NW at age 13 and literally everyone else was a Nirvana person. When I was 5 I had a terrible temper and would punch holes in my bedroom walls. I think I got a lot of inner demons out early. Maybe I would've loved Nirvana back then and really scared the hell out of my parents. In the mid 90s Nirvana anger and outward apathy didn't connect. I liked Pearl Jam's tunes and underlying sense for triumph. Still do. I'm a softie. Give Nirvana the unplugged treatment and it hits different. The vocals come through more honest less ironic. The fragile sound invites sympathy. The live room feels more communal. The Man Who Sold the World guitar solo is absolutely perfect. But I can't do 14 straight tracks of it or else I'll start punching the walls of my mental bedroom. B+

Pretty decent live. I never got it Nirvana as much as I wanted to. But can still appreciate their influence on the grunge scene

I’d forgotten how good they were. Enjoyed listening to it. Not quite a ****, but almost !

Not my type of music but I can see why people like it ----- 7/10

I'm not a fan of Nirvana and really wanted to not like this. However, I enjoyed it a lot more than any of their studio recorded music that I've listened to. I was somehow less gloomy and less dirgy. 3/5.

Getting Beatles vibes right off the bat. Not my cup of tea overall, but enjoyable for the pop culture significance/aspect.

On the whole, I definitely liked it better than the majority of the rest of Nirvana’s stuff. Still didn’t care too much for it, but much more palatable. Favorite track(s): “Dumb”

Final song was good, nice raspy voice. Fun energy.

good bowie cover impossible to separate from teenage associations

i'm realizing i like nirvana covers more than nirvana unfortunately...

Lovely - good songs, good covers, great sound.

The unplugged version of Come As You Are is... lowkey better than the original. Bass is very present and I enjoy that. I really think Kurt Cobain just kind of sounds constipated when he sings and it's not for me. Buuuut I think Nirvana is objectively good so I'm gonna give this one a fat three stars.

Good album. I've just never been the biggest Nirvana fan.

1-1-21 I would have liked to hear more of their actual hits being played acoustically rather than so many cover songs.

Live-optræden, autentisk, stille rock, covers, akustisk, nærværende

I'm trying to get over my annoyance that this wasn't, in fact, an unplugged performance, and look at the music objectively, but it's hard. At the end of the day, they're still mumbly Nirvana songs, or covers done in the mumbly Nirvana way. This album was treated with kid gloves when it came out because Kurt Cobain had just died, and I don't understand why people still think it's great now. Best track: Dumb

*MTV Unplugged* was OK, and I recognised a lot of songs from in music shops and stuff. I'm not a huge fan of live albums in general though, excluding a few exceptional artists, and the songs didn't really feel that they "added" anything to the studio versions, except getting to hear the covers

i only liked "the man who sold the world". it's not theirs and i don't even like bowie that much.

I don't like live albums, I don't like acoustic renditions, I like Nirvana well enough. This was a snoozefest. A shame.

dnf, jesus doesn't want for a sun beam gave me a good ol cackle and then I turned off the album lol

This album has a fatal flaw, unfortunately. It sounds like complete ass. The guitars are the worst offenders- often out of tune, and recorded in a horrible, tinny way- like a beginning guitarist plugging into a shitty practice amp. Argh. Just- ass. I think this is one of those albums that people love not because it’s good, but because of what it represents. In this case, it’s a postcard from a funeral for someone who’s just about to die. It sounds like a suicide note. Which in many ways is the Nirvana legacy- no band in the history of rock music has ever benefited so much from checking out early. Kurt is frozen in time, forever the voice of his generation, never given the opportunity to make a truly awful record, or embarrassing cameos in insurance commercials. “Unplugged” is creepy, and arresting, and prescient. But is it any good? No. TWO STARS

I found Kurt Cobain's vocals distractingly annoying, it's almost Creed-level bad. I also don't understand the idea of unplugged if they're going to use electric guitars. That being said, a few moments broke through: the pipe-organ-sounding tones during "Jesus Doesn't Want Me...", the electric guitar during "The Man Who Sold The World", and I genuinely respect Cobain for doing something that clearly made him uncomfortable. The only song that really blew me away was Something In The Way, the violins in the background really made it haunting. I've never been wooed by the lyrics of a Nirvana song, but this one at least sounds great.

I guess I don't have an immediate, one-star rejection of all Nirvana. But that's an extremely low bar.

Ive heard this album as a kid and I remember loving it The symbolism is what makes it and maybe im just too much of a posh nerd to understand but I feel like this album is slightly overrated. Its good. Nirvana is great. But top 5 greatest live is kinda much. 49/100 aoty

idk no thanks

im sorry i just think theyre soooooo overrated somethings in my ass mmmmmmmmm

Nirvana Unplugged: 2/5 I don't want to ever listen to this again, but it wasn't painful to listen to. Up until Something in the Way, I was waiting for the album to be over. Really felt like I was tapping my foot and staring at my watch. Building a fence probably isn't the right way to listen to this though, unless you hate your job. It's a very subdued album that mostly blends together and sounds the same, but that's probably just due to the unplugged live nature of it. Feels like edible music, like I'm not supposed to be listening to it sober. It's just not music I want to be listening all that intently to. I need to be on some sort of downer to appreciate it, but I don't go for weed or heroin, so it's just not going to be for me. But Something in the Way was great. Very somber. This is definitely music from a guy who killed himself. I bet this is one of his last recordings and that's why it's on the list. If I knew more of the emotional context, maybe I'd have the appreciation for it, but I don't. It was okay though.

Lots of fillers don't mask the lack of finished songs.

Preferred it as background noise than active listening. Just found it a little slow and dull when really focussing in on it.

Joa, geht so.

Letschtes lied sehr guet davor öppe 5 lieder lame af

this is my first time listening to a nirvana project in full. maybe its cus i'm so friggin sleepy but i am unimpressed. i hate this guitar tone, so thin and plinky. favorite song so far was a bowie cover. i dont get it

Sounded over the head by this by MTV and radio for years. It just makes me want to hear the studio versions of these songs

So this album is just live music which is cool but most of the songs are slow and reminds me a bit of country 🫠 I do like Lake of Fire though gives me the walking dead vibes lowkey. Don’t get the hype of this band maybe it’s just this album its just not for me

I would enjoy Nirvana more if there was an accordion in all of their songs

Not too bad but didnt add any

Underwhelming

Cool but not my favorite

Highlights: The Man Who Sold the World, Dumb, Something in the Way, Lake of Fire Meh. I like the album versions better. But to me it seems as if there was more effort put into this unplugged than any other I know of.

raw, rough, pretty fuckin iconic. sonic quality pretty top notch, but boring

Nothing special

A truly miserable experience. Slow songs accompanied by pretty woeful vocals. Some potentially good songs but I can't get past the voice.

I just can’t do live albums. Season: True Fall Favorite Song: Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Samey and made me sad

I've never loved Nirvana, but always thought they were fine. However, this album really showcases how Kurt Cobain really can't sing. I feel really bad for his throat, especially on Pennyroyal Tea. This album has done nothing to change my mind on Nirvana, but it's my first Nirvana album in this project, so maybe the studio albums might do something for me.

boring

I just don't like nirvana, come as you are is good tho.

Like normal Nirvana, but worse

kinda a life hack

I really don't enjoy Nirvana. Gave it a try, but his voice just isn't for me.

bored except for the bowie cover

Fine! Haha :)

I still don't get Nirvana, sorry. Did absolutely nothing for me

I usually hate live albums but this one didn’t bother me. I thought this album was ok but I also hadn’t listened to a lot of nirvana outside of this so I had nothing to compare it to.

Found some good songs, but felt bad for Cobain’s throat the whole time

Just not that fussed

Will I get crucified if I think this wasn’t that great? Wes Scanlin covered About a Girl and got roasted because of how bad he sounded… he actually sounded a lot like Kurt..

The unplugged aesthetic is kinda cool at first but really highlights how similar the songs they selected were. Kurt’s voice, the acoustic guitar, the bass, and the light drums aren’t enough to give it a full enough sound. The album got boring around the 3rd or 4th song but had a few nice moments.

Decent 2. I love “All Apologies.” It’s one of my favorite Nirvana songs of all time, but I prefer the studio production or other live versions. I felt overall this album wasn’t a great listen. It was boring and didn’t showcase Nirvana’s best work. I thought some songs just sounded terrible, like “Plateau.” Not their finest.

don’t get mad at me but like … I don’t really care?

Could any find the acoustic version and it had zero pizaz

Okay hot take from what i've seen in the reviews. It's not bad. But i don't get the hype. It's not bad but it's not great it's okay.

Nirvana for posers.

Nothing to make me rethink my original opinion of Nirvana. Decent enough final couple of tracks but on the whole a bland, boring drone throughout.

All apologies and where did you sleep last night are great songs! worth a second listen

It’s not abhorrent but I just don’t like Nirvana

I've never really been into Nirvana, but I gave this a shot. Is it sacrilege to say I don't like Kurt Cobain's singing voice? It is sonically boring.

Another case of it just not being for me. Especially so because I dont think his voice is not very good live. I was not a big fan of Nirvana in the first place.

I don’t mind Nirvana but this is like a best of where half the songs are covers

-honestly kind of boring -none of the songs stuck out -also didn’t really listen super closely but i couldn’t pay attention because it was so boring

eh mid and the songs all sounded the same

I've never really been able to get into Nirvana.

How this is rated one of the best live albums ever is beyond me, AIC and PJ did it better in my opinion in the Unplugged series, the best song on here is a cover which says it all.

Chyba nie za bardzo..

I like some nirvana songs, just not the live versions on this album this much, the voice wasn’t for me

MTV Unplugged In New York - Nirvana One of the most famous bands of the late 80s through the early 90s. I don’t know them like I know other artists from that period (I like others more, no shade!). I know pop rock and grunge were big at the time. But for me, it’s fine. Like, Kurt Cobain was loved by everyone at the time. That’s not the case here. The songs didn’t click for me! I’m not denying their success, and I’m not trying to drag their art either. I just tried to listen with an open mind, but it didn’t hit though!

live album ❌ unique cover ✔️ 2/5 and don't blow your top off about it

I know this is famous but his voice just hurts to listen to. No idea how he didn't tear his cords apart...

No nii no, The Man Who Sold The World

Nirvana always gives me bad vibes

The "unplugged" aspect of this album provides a glimpse into the bones of Nirvana's songs absent the bludgeoning production of their studio albums, but with mixed results. Avoiding the hits for the most part and mixing in a liberal quantity of covers, the band performs the songs in simple, folky renditions that aren't particularly illuminating. The song choices too are lacking; Kurt Cobain is a gifted melodicist but the deep cuts selected for this set often don't reflect that side of his work very well. In addition, on these performances Cobain continues to lean into the bloozy faux-husky vocal style that was the scourge of 70s hard rock records. Punk and new wave opened the door to a wide range of new vocal styles, but Cobain sticks with regressive vocal affectations that should have been permanently put to bed by the end of the 70s.

Really enjoyed a couple songs (Jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam and The man who sold the world), but overall it's simply not pleasing to me

Fine. I'm not the biggest Nirvana or Kurt Cobain fan, but I can appreciate this for the cultural force that it is.

The cover of Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World is one of the very worst (yet hugely popular) covers of his work.

This album was alright. I definitely feel like the vibe of Nirvana is not laid out enough for the MTV unplugged setting.

Tanto rispetto per mio fratello morto Curto, ma x me si salva solo "Come As You Are", scusatemi Nota: mi ha fatto ridere quando in "All Apologies" dice "what else could I say? Everyone is gay"

i rated sarah vaughan's "at mister kelly's" a 4 some number of moons ago on the merits that 1. i like jazz, 2. it felt historically significant to be listening to a live set from the 1950s, and 3. it made me laugh a couple of times. coming to this album... well... not be a belligerent zoomer who doesn't understand the significance of MTV... but like, who cares? not to mention it's a paired down acoustic set - why do grunge if you're not going to put your whole pussy into it? i'm only half-joking asking that: i'm not an incorrigible hater who can't appreciate musical talent (listening to this, there's no question that nirvana's genius is innate and transcends labels), i'm just an incorrigible hater when it comes to acoustic sets. watching this on youtube improved my feelings somewhat: if i'm going to listen to a live album, i'd like there to at least be SOMETHING interesting about it. i'd like to hear the back and forth between the musicians, i'd like to hear them tune their instruments, and i'd like to hear the audience's reactions, etc. etc. i appreciated this as a project a lot more when i could actually see and hear these things instead of JUST clipping it to the music. highlights - about a girl, come as you are, the man who sold the world

Some great breakout songs, but eventually I just get tired of the Kurt Cobain groaning.

I know this is supposed to be some great concert or whatever, but I don't really see it. Not a great performance, and hearing the Nirvana in an acoustic setting just shows how similar they all sound. Not a great showing for a pretty good band.

Acoustic versions of some of their slower songs and covers. Just a bit boring.

Alt av nirvana høres ut som smells like teen spirit?

Never been a big fan. Not a bad album but rather depressing after a while.

I know I’m supposed to like Nirvana, and I do like some of “the hits” - beyond that, I’ve not quite got the hype. And this album is, I think, made for those who get the hype. “Come As You Are” is a great song, and their cover of “The Man Who Sold the World” still holds up well, but the rest are deep cuts and very odd choices for cover versions. Add the often grating voice of Kurt Cobain to the mix and this just wasn’t for me.

This album started well and got progressively worse. I'd been planning a "pleasantly surprised" type of review but then Lake of Fire happened. Never really recovered after that.

I like Nirvana but I hated this. It just sounded poor.

Another harsh 2 but I don't get the hype with this

It's all shit you've heard before in all the other Nirvana albums, but on MTV, great pick for 1001 albuns!

I legitimately don't understand why this is so popular and loved. Maybe I was just born in the wrong generation

Ooh boy, I know this is a big one from the 90s but it just didn't connect with me. They really made this unplugged format their own, skipping many of their hits and throwing in a lot of covers but the problem is I just really can't make myself care about most of these songs. Come As You Are is very good as is the Bowie cover and Pennyroyal Tea. The second half bores me. Maybe I need to watch the DVD - but I probably won't. A product of its time because of Cobain's untimely death?

Very relaxed and intimate guitar album. Kurt's voice doesn't miss a beat and the minimal instrumentation really helps highlight the song-writing. Best tracks: Polly, On a Plain, Plateau, Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Previously on me saying words at my screen about music or something of that nature: “When I finally get recommended the live album, I'm going to have a Nirvanaganza, where I will relisten to this album along with Nevermind in one last hurrah.” Ummmm, errrrrr, fuck. I don’t have time for the Nirvanaganza. Not after I activated weekend albums not knowing I couldn’t turn them off. Sorry, Nirvana. I’ll return to these albums sometime in the not-too-distant future. I promise. Yeah, this is pretty alright. The songs ultimately lose me as they go along, though I can’t deny that they’re competent performances. I don’t remember much about Nevermind or In Utero, but I appreciate Cobain’s vocals a lot more now that they’re in the foreground. The renditions of Come as You Are, On a Plain and Plateau are pretty good. Lake of Fire is another good cut. I like Cobain’s rockstar-esque vocals. Where Did You Sleep Last Night? is the best song and a good closer. I enjoy the build-up in tension – very gripping. The banter between the bandmates is pretty fun, too. I like the Lead Belly guitar story. I have been intensely anal about the inclusion of live albums on this list and shudder to think of how many I have left. However, I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to consult the book about their inclusion. They made “...the album no one thought a grunge band ever could – an acoustic album”. A bit of an embellishment. The album serves as a strong indicator for where the band could have gone. That’s all there is, really. I think this album is a good listen and a respectable inclusion for the list. I understand the “where could they have gone” angle and I think Kurt Cobain’s impersonal, countercultural persona is worthy of being preserved in a more intimate way. It also helps to have a familiarity with this band’s output before I listened to this album. Anyways, farewell Nirvana. It’s been a short time in the grand scheme of things, but I will try to give em a proper listen sometime down the line.

Un Nirvana muy acartonado, encorsetado. No parecen cómodos.

Cool live album. Nirvana is not necessarily my style, but good music. Cool to hear crowd banter. 5.6/10

I think this is way overrated. They're better with a wall of sound. Favorite song: all apologies.

Expected more songs I'd know about. Wasnt all that tbh

I mean, whatever, right? It's Nirvana, you like Nirvana, you'll like this. It's a live album, so you can't really judge it. Do you like the songs they performed? Yes? Boom, you like this.

I guess i can see the appeal if you like Nirvana and don't think Kurt Cobain is one of histories worst frontmen. Unfortunately, i don't and i do so this was mostly a bag of shit

Brate, rijetko iritantno prenemaganje tokom pjevanja

Favorite song: The Man Who Sold The World Least Favorite song: Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam

Man har redan hört det bra

jeg foretrækker albums, der ikke er live

Not great compared to their studio albums

🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱

I liked the bowie cover, "lake of fire", and "plateau". I listened to the studio version of "something in the water" and liked it way better than the live version. I want to listen to their studio albums.

ok, not as heavy as some parts of Nevermind which I liked, but in some parts also not as interesting. just not that into the grunginess of it all i suppose

I continue to not particularly enjoy live albums, which is a shame because I do enjoy some nirvana

Boring

Fine, but no more than fine

I just can't stand unplugged in general.

Coming out and saying it.... I am not a big Nirvana fan! Nothing wrong with this I just am realizing it's not for me.

Far from their best

Nirvana was never nowhere close to as good as they got credit for. This album is no different. There are two great tracks on this album, but both Bowie and Lead Belly nailed them on the originals, so what's the point?

Nirvana blows

4 chords, 2 stars

As músicas não me empolgaram, embora algumas tenham chamado atenção. - "Come As You Are" ficou um arranjo bem legal, embora tenha sentido falta do peso do baixo nela. - "The Man Who Sold the World" é decente, embora eu prefira muito mais o original de David Bowie. Tinha potencial. - "Something in the Way" tem um ar bem soturno e ficou bem fiel à versão original. - "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", que também é um cover, pra mim é o ápice do álbum e a melhor performance do Kurt em todo o disco.

2 stars. Not a bad album, but it doesn't work for me. The three songs I enjoyed aren't enough to make me sit through all of it. Also the fact that Kurt keeps saying "I'm gonna butcher this song" is so fucking annoying. Like, brother, just play the damn song and let us decide (he butchered most of them). About a Girl: A song that works better when you're a teen with a guitar trying to bang that one chick that wears way too much mascara. Come As You Are: The opening riff for this one is the first thing I learned to play on Guitar to impress that one chick that wears way too much mascara. Jesus Doesn't Want Me For a Sunbean: I always skipped this one and now I remember why ♡ The Man Who Sold The World: Amazing Rendition of a Great Song. Wish Seu Jorge had recorded it for Life Aquatic sessions. Pennyroyal Tea: Not a big fan of the rendition, but a good song nonetheless Dumb: 🤷🏽 ♡ Polly: This song is so fucking good. His voice lends itself perfectly for the tone of the song. On a Plain: Every Nirvana song sounds like you're 12 and this is deep. "The finest day I've ever had is when I learned to smile on command" Bottom Text ♡ Something in the Way: Although I disagree with the morals of consuming sea creatures, I must admit this song is a banger. Plateau: Ranking high on "First songs I learned as a Teenager". His voice is not really suited for this song. Oh Me: Pretty forgettable track. Lake of Fire: Yee Haw. All Apologies: I really can't vibe with songs that are so "omg i'm not like the others". It's like they lack self awareness, idk. Not my thing Where Did You Sleep Last Night: Nirvana is just Falcão for people who know what depression is.

I know Nirvana is an important group in the history of music. However, I think I would have enjoyed this more if I liked Nirvana more. I know this person wasn't the original singer but I can't get past the vocals: very nasal, raspy, and flat. 2/5 I will not be back to listen.

I know this was a critically acclaimed event and got tons of coverage back in the day... but I just don't like live albums... nor Nirvana... That said, compared to the other live albums I've had to endure on this list (and Nirvana's In Utero), this is slightly more tolerable... so I'll be generous and give it a 2...

I don't really like Nirvana. Their sound is too abrasive for me personally, and Cobain's vocals are both ugly sounding and unintelligible, rendering the lyrics moot. Hearing Nirvana playing an acoustic(ish) set makes their instrumentation less abrasive, and I actually quite like how the guitars sound on this album. But Cobain's vocals are the greater problem here, and are as awful as they always have been. I think this album is as well regarded as it is mainly because of his death, which occurred not long after this was recorded. It's nothing special as a listening experience

Lyrics: 1/5 Music: 2/5 Production: 2/5 Cohesiveness: 2/5 Overall: 2/5 Stand out songs: The man who sold the world (but it is a cover) Sounds like your average high school band playing songs stood perfectly still on stage. It all just feels very high school band. Lyrics are very poor. Kurt’s voice does have the right level of raspiness to it in some songs which adds a good texture to the songs. The fact that this has such a high rating makes me feel like I’m missing something. But I don’t think I want to find whatever it is I’m missing. I’m happy not really enjoying this album

Overrated. 'Where did you sleep last night' was the best song for me. 2/5

Nirvana....

Ok. Nothing great

Surprisingly, I didn’t hate this as much as I usually hate Nirvana. Still not something I’d listen to by choice though.

I feel like I have heard all of these songs because of the other Nirvana albums in the list, so why do I need to hear the live versions too? 2/5

I don’t enjoy live albums very much, respect to the band but not my cup of tea.

Don't really like the unplugged format

Not here to listen live album, stuff to do🤓🏌️‍♂️🐴😍🐽💙🦘🖌️➰🎙️🇪🇷🇨🇾🔊🔊⏲️🕒🚍🛻⚛️🚧😷🛁💵😏⛴️♊

I remember seeing this on TV in 1994 and thinking it was great. 30 years later... It doesn't sound all that good.

Pleasantly depressing.

I know it's Nirvana...but it's a bit of a snooze fest...

I wish I could appreciate the cultural moment Nirvana created but I wasn’t there. Not my favorite

I do not own this album but I’ve heard it many times over. I was influenced greatly by the new grunge sounds of the early 90s. This album was a little shocking, due to the song choice and what their normal sound was. It preceded Kurt Cobian’s death by a short time. I’d rather remember Nirvana for the plugged in sound.

Every now and again one of these songs hits it out of the park but I'm kinda lukewarm on the project as a whole

Nirvana is best when plugged in

Something about Cobains voice really grates on this album

Nope. Gave it a chance but just don't get them, don't get grunge, and would frankly rather pull a Cobain than listen to that again.

Influential, important, historic. I still don't like Nirvana at all and I find Cobain's voice annoying. Borderline 1 or 2 stars for me.

The Lead Belly and Bowie covers are excellent, but there’s nothing in the other songs vocally or musically that is terribly interesting or impressively-performed. I understand why it’s been so reveled, given that it came out after Kurt’s death, but I don’t think it’s deserving of the hype and critical claim.

I didn't actually get all that far through this album so sorry if my opinions are wildly off for the second half of the album but the first couple of songs all sounded exactly the same and made me wish I was listening to a better nirvana song

Nú móðga ég einhver. Þetta er svo arfaslakt. Upptakan léleg, enginn virðist vera í góðu formi. Týpískt fyrir genre-ið "tónleikaplötur sem heppnast ekki vel", sem ca 95% tónleikaplatna falla undir skv. mér.

What trash is this? Ughh!!

OK, I guess

I've not really been a great fan of Nirvana, maybe cynically, I think they can ascribe much of their fame and subsequent record sales on the untimely death of Kurt. This album breaks no new ground, is replete with cover versions and imo only made it to the top 1000 because it was the first to be relesed after the above mentioned unfortunate event.

Warning: hot take ahead! This kind of punk rock does not translate well to acoustic. The heavy distorted guitars tie together Kurt's raspy, strained vocals and give the music the energy it needs. I think completely restructured their instrumentation of the songs, maybe adding some more piano or strings or something, it would have worked for me. It's like they're trying to highlight Kurt's vocals over any instrument. His vocals are definitely not the highlight of Nirvana's music. Eerything just sounds sad and very slow. It literally sounds like a mediocre band that you might hear playing in the corner of a dive bar. Kurt was somehow able to develop an aura of illustrious musical genius after his death. IMO, if he didn't kill himself, his fame would have faded over the years and he wouldn't be more famous than 3 Doors Down or something. It also helps that he's hunky.

Angsty, as expected from Nirvana, but lyrics are intelligible. Limited guitar chords or melody. A bit musically monotonous, but lyrically more interesting, something that is hard to appreciate on Nevermind.

I fail to see the point of live albums

Langweilig und Cobain singt ziemlich falsch

Lead singers voice was too whiny for my liking.

When I was younger I recall how much Nirvana was liked. I feel like I missed the boat. But, then I hear this album and it still doesn't do much for me. It's still good, just not really my vibe

...if Kurt had stuck around, and dumped Courtney, would we have noticed?...... just askin.....

I think Kurt Cobain is wildly overrated as a guitar player, singer and a songwriter.

ehhhhh surprisingly not my style of rock

Kind of just fine. Not bad to listen to, but nothing crazy. Not much I would listen to again

Meh…

I tried, I really did. It was so sad watching someone who killed himself. But grunge is just not my cup of tea.

If became famous for this depressing garbage I'd have killed myself too.

You wanna know a thought I’ve never had? “Hey, I really wanna listen to an acoustic Nirvana album.”

Mostly a bunch of songs I don't know and don't care about.

i just really have never liked nirvana… will i get crucified for that take ?

A good live album but not one I would place high in my top 1000 albums. Best song - Plateau

Urg. I'm so tired of this album, the song choices are interesting and the execution is fine but I don't get how it is seminal in any way

Not my cup of Pennywhistle. They do have some good songs on this album but they are covers

I’m giving it two stars because the band sounded like themselves at least while playing live. That said, I’ve never understood the popularity of this whining and navel gazing. These songs are neither fun nor well written, and certainly not well performed in my opinion.

I’ll preface with I’m not much of a fan of Nirvana. I find most of the time the unplugged guitar tone just didn’t sound very good. Maybe I don’t like unplugged concerts or their tone just wasn’t what I was looking for. I don’t like Cobain’s vocals that much, he also mumbles a good bit which I find frustrating at times. The writing often feels simple to me, simple chords with nothing too special structure-wise as far as I can tell or feel. It didn’t have a great start. The first song sounds like a grungy early Beatles song. There were a couple songs I enjoyed throughout the middle, with catchy guitar hooks of decent melodies. The banter between tracks was funny, especially Cobain’s “shut up”. I think Nirvana just really isn’t for me and this album couldn’t convince me otherwise.

Pretty good album. I remember when this came out pennyroyal tea is one of my favorite songs.

Acoustic grunge. Not really my thing. 2/5

Inte min grej precis, men Lake of fire är bra

Recorded just months before Kurt Cobain's tragic death, this stripped-down and acoustic performance captures the band in a moment of intimacy and introspection. The album features a mix of Nirvana's biggest hits and lesser-known tracks, all reimagined in a more intimate and acoustic setting. From the rendition of "Something in the Way" to the haunting "Pennyroyal Tea" and the heartbreaking "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," each track on this album is delivered with emotion but feels more watered down compared to the actual album versions. MTV Unplugged in New York is where Nirvana transition from their signature grunge sound to a more stripped-down acoustic sound. The arrangements are simple and whilst it’s allowing the raw emotion of the lyrics to shine through, it leads to a lot of the performances to fall slightly flat. Saying that this album is not without some highlights, with the most unforgettable moment being Cobain's cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." The song's melancholy lyrics and Cobain's haunting vocals give the track an added layer of poignancy, especially in light of Cobain's tragic death just a few months later. MTV Unplugged in New York is an album that showcases Nirvana at their most vulnerable and introspective. However the tuned down renditions leads to a lot of tracks losing their identity.

Meh. Mainly because it's live

Sorry, just not a Nirvana fan. Don't like his voice. Some good songs though.

Did not appreciate the raw vocals very much.

I very rarely care for live albums with audience interactions and this was not one of the few where I would. And I can't help but think that the reviews of this are more of a wishes for Nirvana to actually produce a studio album with this semi acoustic sound and the nostalgia for it. Combining with the fact that the covers, especially the Bowie one, were the best songs, I just can't hold this to the same standard as "regular" albums on this list.

Was not a fan before, and still wasn’t a fan after, guessing I will never be. 😂

Meh. Grunge schmunge

Best not listen to when already depressed. Although a good album, Nirvana and MTV were unhappy with the performance.

Usually love Unplugged for what it is, but I dunno what it was about this one that didn't excite me. I know Nirvana is a "thing" but Kurt's vocals sounded a little put-on and less genuine. Everything else was pretty average.

ok i like nirvana but this was just awful. at many songs his voice became completely unbearable and it just sounded so terrible. the songs just do not sound good this version. of course i was familiar with many songs by they sounded so different in a bad way

Prefer this to their studio / ‘plugged’ recordings. Nice version of Man Who. But find the angst of their own songs a bit hard to listen to. I guess you had to be there but they don’t really speak to me. Also not a fan of Cobain’s voice.

Equally enjoying as enjoyable. Kurt literally murders some songs with his nasally grunge whine. The conversation to acoustic takes out the fun and excitement of what make nirvana great. That said some nice turns great Bowie cover and sounded genuinely distressed in where did sleep last night. Overall bit of a miss for a great band.

I get it Nirvana deeply impacted rock music and briefly lead the horde of flannel and boot wearing, distortion/overdrive guitar playing grunge bands. This sparsely produced live acoustic album sought to be an astounding awakening for the "I'm 14 and this is deep" audience by dialing down the heavy noise and highlighting Kurt Cobain's lyrical/melodic/vocal intimacy. Of course, it's deeply impacting, but this format always came across as a gimmicky shill. The genius of Nirvana is finding that intimacy as sweaty flannel boot guys are stage diving onto your face.

Not as I imagined.

i dislike acoustic guitars

Yllättävän relaa (ja melankolista) Nirvanaa

Didn't realize I was gettin' depressed today!

Did not enjoy especially since it was the live version..

Too many covers, Cobain sings live (not good), so I would say it's bullshit (2*) despite that I like Nevermind very much.

Why so many live albums? Why would I want the acoustic version of their songs? I do not think it improved the songs. I don't hate this album, but I don't need to listen to this version of the songs again.

Ok for background music, quite middle of the road and a lot of the songs sound the same

Not a massive Nirvana fan but appreciate the music and what they did for the industry. Enjoyed listening to this, I knew more songs than I thought I would, found a couple I think I’d add to playlists going forward.

All apologies to my ears

i might never become as cool as i wanted to be

Was ok

Did not like this. Kurt is very mumbly, which may be endearing to some but not to me and the acoustic set losses some of the edge I normally associate with Nirvana

Solo me gustan algunas canciones.

Niravana? more like Nirver mind amirite.

Not big on Nirvana tbh but it's okay. The Man Who Sold The World is a cool cover and i don't mind a few of the songs.

Some cool covers on here but I get why people hate Kurt Cobain's voice after listening to unedited versions of his song.

i didn't get anything out of this :/

Did not like it

Hated the whole unplugged era.

While I appreciate this performance , and I’ve said this in previous reviews, I do not think live albums should be on this list.

yeah... I don't think Nirvana is for me. I like some of the instrumentals but I don't really like Kurt's voice and a lot of the songs are too stripped down for me. Ultimately pretty bored by this one.

i hated it

no I'm not doing this, fuck you

Yeah, I was in middle school too, like any one else. But with 20 years to reflect I can confidently say this album sucks shit. The whole reason I listened to Nirvana was for the hard rock noise that would soon become the staple of classic rock stations. Not for folky cover songs.

not my style

no me gusta nirvana mil disculpas

Unplugged more like un good. I’ve never really gotten into nirvana or grunge in general and this live set with all the energizing electric sounds removed certainly didn’t change my mind. Plateau here is genuinely one of the worst vocal performances I’ve heard.

Garbage worst band in the HISTORY Of EVER. Thanks for the 1st one. Next better be better...smh

What a load of absolute keach! Just proves how untalented they were.

You've been wasting so much time on trash, and not enough time showing albums I actually listen to. I've been playing the albums I actually want to hear, instead of what ever crap you throw at the wall. SMH

Hot take: this wouldn't have been as popular if Kurt hadn't died a couple of months after this aired. This isn't even the best MTV Unplugged album, "nevermind" that it's not even the best Nirvana album. 1/5 Pearl Jam unplugged should have made the list instead.

Oh so whiney. Nirvana are not my cup of tea.

Livealbum

Oh god please not the 2 worst things imaginable: Live and Unplugged. Urgh The man who sold the World is always great though.

Fucking agonizing

don't @ me bro

Couldn't listen to, it was so whiney. I've never liked grunge.

Utter nonsense and absolute garbage. Cobain is so overrated

Genuinely one of the most overrated live albums of all time

Never cared for them.

This demonstrates what I already suspected - that under all the noise and oversaturated amps Nirvana is just an amateur band. It sounds like a wedding band but the lead singer was too drunk to sing so the guitarist is filling in for him (even though he's also drunk).

Not for me.

very overrated band and album

I don't understand the concept of live albums, and I despise this band. I'd give it a 0 if I could.

The most overrated band of all time doing unplugged versions of their sloppy covers and original noises. How we got Dave Grohl from this wreckage is a miracle no historian has been able to explain. It was nice of Pat Smear to show up to this and help out with a tuned guitar, because Kurt wasn't going to do that. And that guy simply cannot sing. He'd be cut off and kicked out of a townie bar's karaoke night where they put up with the burned out town bicycle who thinks her cigarette coated vocal chords sound like Janis Joplin. Simply awful, and this nonsense where we have to pretend Nirvana is something to be reverent toward is absolute trash. F-

Blech.

not much of a fan its meh alright i guess

I can't stand Nirvana. This album does nothing to change that. Kurt's guitar is out of tune. Somebody's guitar gets run through overdrive, completely defying the spirit of "unplugged." I'm sure it was all about "they can't tell us what to do!" which completely missed the point of the unplugged exercise, which is to set up a limitation that requires creativity to get around. The best song on here is the Bowie cover, and even that is hard to listen to because of the vocals. 1 star.

Livealbum

Boring
