Reviews (page 10 of 14)

Great album, was

Was certainly an experience albeit a problematic one

Some good discoveries

I feel like I wasn't in the headspace to engage with it. Nice tunes and I'm sure he's saying some stuff worth saying in here but the violent misogyny and homophobia was extremely edgelord for me. Kim was particularly hard to listen to and I ended up skipping it.

Wow. When I was young, I grew up with friends who snuffed at rap music. Now, some fifteen years later, I hear this and think: "Man, what a waste, to dismiss a complete genre of music". There is some proper ART here. Especially the song Stan hit me hard. But I also feel very conflicted. Because after listening the whole album, I feel like there's a bunch of songs that just purely go for shock factor, edgy edgy, "whoa look at me I say bad stuff in my art". Well, sure, it makes me feel things, so, well done Eminem. But after a while, it just felt like being Bad just for the sake of being Bad. He's not making any points. It feels like at some points in this album, Eminem is just being a white guy making money off of edgy stuff. Seen that 100 times before. Some songs are GREAT, and some songs are, well, shite.

AJ: “The Way I Am” ruled when this came out. “Stan” was craaaaazy. He’s a goat.

it was OK

"Kill You" was such a wow track lyrically, holy shit. Maybe a bit too edgy but just listening to all these wordly rhythmic shenanigans gave me goosebumps. That is really some master wordsmith shit. Obviously "Stan" doesn't need any more thoughts on my part but using "Thank You" samples was an absolute boss and culturally relevant move. "Who Knew" treads a fine line in the chorus, I mean we obviously can't blame him for shit his fans do or argue his music simply attracted troubled people, yet I feel like he made a dismissive approach to his own influence on kids, but I'm an idealistic hippie and violence-oriented or themed content doesn't really sit right with me There was no spark with "The Way I Am", though the lyrics are true and real. The rapping rhythm pattern gets tiring really quick and I don't like the growling vibe of his voice here. The beat is monotonous and the music too simple. I always lowkey loved the harpsichord in "The Real Slim Shady". Also - personal branding done right. I love the beat in "Remember Me?" but RBX and Sticky Fingaz rapping is just plain weird for me. The whole song has a weird vibe. "I'm Back?" Way too much personal branding at this point for me, another one of "I'm Slim Shady and I'm sick, crazy and violent" autobiography bullshit, we heard that already The backing track nicely develops under his words in "Marshall Mathers". I like the guitar loop. Oh yeah, the blatant homophobia. Ooooooh and a guitar solo on the outro! That's a nice touch. "Drug Ballad" is a BOP! Finally little to nothing about violence, NSYNC or hating gays, a nice bass, a nice beat in the verses and chorus. Ooooooh shit the beat in "Amityville"... Nice. Jesus, but the Bizarre verse... Straight up EWWWW NO. I'll try my best to ignore it everytime I listen to this song. The guitar at the end is another nice touch. And the star-studded "Bitch Please II". Dre's verse is hella good, Snoop's is just fucking underwhelming. X and Em are serving as always. I wonder how much of "Kim" is actually true to life and how much of it is just his fragile masculinity. Nevertheless I gotta say it's an interesting piece of music and storytelling. I liked "Under the Influence" up to the point other rappers started showing up. It's way too long, after the 3rd minute the song becomes really dull and repetitive. Also I'm definitely not a fan of Bizarre, fuck that dude. Yeah, some more blatant homophobia on "Criminal", and the intro showed some promising perspective... The chorus is nice though.

Some absolutely fantastic tracks on this, production and rap wise. But parts of it have aged poorly, and I don't only mean in terms of social context - it often sounds dated and rudimentary. I'll give it a 3 because of the highlights

It was alright

SO- Stan, Real Slim Shady, Criminal

Now I need to wash my headphones of all the filth that came out.

Little too rappy for me

It’s crazy that this is probably only the 3rd time I’ve listened to this record in full in the last 20 years and I still almost know all the words front to back. Being 13 in 99 with this coming out was wild. That said, it doesn’t particularly hold up. The lyrics, of course, yikes, but even the music and the flow - while it is probably the best Eminem album, it’s a chore.

Eminem is a lot of things. Producer, grammy award winning artist, father, icon. However, he is not an artist I really care to listen to.

Splinkady-dinkady-doo uhhh my name is Eminem. Orange, blorange, four inch, door hinge, I fucked (sex) and came (penis), this woman is a slut (bitch) and doo doo feces (caca). Please clap. Look how edgy this album is! Here, have another skit about how edgy this album is! Hey, did you know that they won't play this album on the radio? Has some undeniable bangers though. I can't hate on "Stan" and "The Real Slimy Shady".

Genre: hiphop Bästa låt: förutom the real slim shady var någon av dom första bra. Höga toppar, har lite svårt för texterna annars

Stan // The Way I Am // Real Slim Shady //

Some fire songs here, along with the usual horrific stuff. I'll give it a 3 I guess.

Self-absorbed, angry, violent, childish. But Stan is a great song.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Eminem. Him being one of the best selling artists ever always seemed strange. His music never spoke anything really powerful to me, and I didn’t grow up around people who loved his music. He just kind of represented a rebellious generation of teenagers who liked that he swore a lot. I never took the time to sit down and actually listen to a project of his all the way through until now. The biggest takeaway from this album is his songwriting. I can understand why some consider him to be an all time great. Because from the very beginning, he has always been a strong lyricist, and more notably, a strong storyteller. If you took the cinematic aspects of an album like Ready to Die, and expanded them out into entire songs and covered a whole album in them, you get this project. It’s why I think “Stan” is the standout track. It’s one of the biggest songs off the record, but it has an interesting narrative in it. At the same time though, I find songs like “Kim” to be obnoxious and unnecessary. The constant screaming and weird voices he uses aren’t enjoyable to listen to. I think the production is solid. Dr. Dre usually does a good job, and this is not an exception. This album doesn’t have too many features, but the ones it does have are okay, except for the song “Remember Me?”. The feature kind of ruins the song, which is a bummer since it has one of my favorite beats on the whole album. Eminem is a strong writer, but I think he is strong in one particular category. He just kind of said whatever the fuck he wanted to, including the f-slur a lot for some reason. And most of the songs on this are talking about the same things. Why he will continue to say what he wants and how much everyone hates him for doing that. It’s not bad but gets a little repetitive after a couple songs. This album is just incredibly dark and brooding, and he is always mad at something. Sometimes he channels it and makes super interesting songs, but other times it just feels like theatrics and not songwriting. This album didn’t make me an Eminem super fan, although I never imagined it would. I was born past the point where Eminem had made his mark, and by the time I was born, he was already entering his period of mediocrity. But it is nice to see a project from him that had some actual quality to it.

Not my thing

Ugh, used to think nothing of this - it was beyond cool at the time of release and unlike anyone else. Unapologetic. Now that I'm 34 and a mom, I'm going a bit Karen on this 😪

Musically pretty great, but my god what an asshole.

Listening to this the day after Dark Twisted Fantasy is quite the comparison. to say Em is a better rhymer than Ye is the understatement of the century. it's like they're playing different sports. It's just a shame most of that great rhyming is about the same juvenile wank.

Some memorable tracks

iconic & influential, keine frage. aber beats sind oft corny und die lyrics cringe af

Maybe the most impossible record to review of all time. The music, the rhymes, the flow, the talent, second to none. Best record by one of the best rappers ever. But how do you get past the homophobia and misogyny and glorification of domestic violence in good faith? He would argue that it was just jokes, or the backlash to Slim Shady made him push it further, that he's not homophobic. That may well be true. Elton John performed with him on the Grammys and they hugged and held hands! But that's the struggle of art, isn't it? You put something out into the world, it ceases to be defined by you and becomes defined by the audience. Some of the audience has a right to reject it...if gay kids are hurt by repeated f-slurs, you don't get to wave it off as just jokes. Some of the audience will take it literally, and Em realizes this...that's what "Stan" is about, after all. Dre doesn't mind that there's a song that fantasizes about killing him, so he's cool, but what about the woman already suffering from abuse whose husband knows every word to "Kim?" Aren't her fears valid? So how do you review something that by every discernable metric SHOULD be an easy 5 out of 5, EXCEPT for the fact that it's full of hurtful lyrics that deserve the lowest rating I can give? I don't know what else to do except meet in the middle and write a long explanation as to why this is one of the few works of genius I can think of that most people probably shouldn't listen to.

It was a 4, until it was a 3.

All new Eminem songs were a bit shit

Dear Slim, My mum got me into you when she was having some mid life crisis when I was about 9. I have fond memories of listening to your song Stan on the radio but having to turn off the end of the song so I didn’t hear the woman screaming - it scared me! I have great memories of singing The Real Slim Shady in the car on the way to Legoland. Your music videos always made me laugh. Thank you Slim Going to drive a car into the river now and recreate you song… don’t worry no one is in the trunk. Hope you write back!

Nostalgic. Fresh but dated. Some classics but lots of filler. A high 3.

Maybe deserved a four. Really strong but not my thing.

An all-time genre great near his peak. Some of these songs still slap. Some are really angry, like wow, we used to bop to this. I guess this sort of anger-pop was the norm at the time (i.e. Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc). A couple of songs would really stand out and offend in present day, but I do remember him being a very controversial figure at the time, which only led us to want to listen to him more.

Obviously ground breaking and artful, with a lot of humour and many layers, but I found a lot of the lyrics and imagery simply problematic and not something I really enjoy listening to. I can appreciate some of it, but it's just not my thing.

Shame I can't give half stars it's more than a 2 but not quite a 3. It's better than the average so giving the benefit of the extra half star on the strength of Stan and Slim shady

Side A is full of introspective, personal lyrics, well constructed over perfectly executed beats and samples. Then side B turns to shit. Even Dre and Snoop are cringe worthy here. Eminem is a great talent but his characters and personas wear thin.

- Lyrical genius for better or worse - Some absolute classics and some songs that are hard to listen to - Had it not been Eminem, would I have enjoyed it?

I used to listen to this all the time. At the time I didn't really think too much about how homophobic, misogynistic, and violent it was. Listening to it 20 years later, this really wouldn't be the hit that it was. A lot of the themes in this are Eminem coming to terms with the fame he achieved from his first album, not understanding how the things he says have an impact on others. But then he doubles down, says it's all a persona, he's only saying these things to sell records, will the real slim shady please stand up?

La canción Kim tiene ese enojo que tanto quería escuchar

Still some enjoyable tracks on here, but the songs about Kim feel particularly brutal and uncomfortable these days

Eminem's talent is obvious, but his edgier lyrics have that vibe of being serious until called out at which point they transform to satire. Most of the tracks here lack the self-reflection to be proper satire so they're stuck at the shock humour kind of level.

Well the lyrics are atrocious lmao. If I ignored that then I would have enjoyed it way more, but don’t rappers pride themselves on their lyrics? Blah.

Angry. But pretty good nonetheless

at this point in my life i have realised the power of not giving a fuck what other people think of you. whole style of the album is an inspiration to me. some fucked stuff in here.

Not a fan of rap, but I didn't hate listening to this. 3 stars.

Some big hits but didn't love every song.

good production and vocals (mechanically), lyrical topics are 'eh' 20 years later

I like this album for nostalgia reasons. I don't love the anger and violence though...

Eminem has always been a problem for me. Sometimes his songs, lyrics, attitude are refreshing, insightful, and fun: eg “Stan” & even “Kill You”. Others are just confusing and/or plain terrible, especially every single one of the skits. “Kill You” is obvious satire but the misogynistic “Kim”, even after all these years & apologetics sounds like MM is just seconds away from domestic violence. And the homophobia across the board, most especially in the Insane Clown Posse dis skit “Ken Kaniff”, which he even mentions elsewhere on the album that he knows it’s there but seems to indicate he places the interpretation all on us the listeners… well if that’s true, then I think he’s just a poseur… but see, I don’t. I think MM is complicated and angry. And supremely talented. Yet I also think he shirks responsibility for his words & art. He knows people are affected by him & his work, like in the partially introspective & socially conscious “Stan”, but he shows the supreme asocial to antisocial tendency that our crass post-Reagan world seems to require “I’m only responsible for me & mine”. It’s adolescent, immature. Eminem loves that he is noticed and people love him and usually has a great sense of humor, but he only knows how to handle criticism by lashing out. So even with all the good parts, Eminem’s records always leave his infectious bitter taste in my mouth afterward.

On the day home to MI from NC! Distinctive voices and good rhythm. Dido clip is excellent. 3 stars would have been 4 but for homophobia and hate. It was a sign of the times but now we strive for kindness and mercy.

Lyrically impressive, but a little too angsty cringe.

Me mola

Idk how to rate this. His lyrics are so smart but his songs are so dumb lol. Slim shady is great, the sound effects and commentary on the music industry are some of my favorite things about Eminem. Some of the violent/offensive stuff is super off-putting, and I know that’s the whole point but I don’t want to hear songs about beating women especially coming from Dr Dre! And the one about fucking his mom is so disgusting.

Stan is incredible. I love all of the sound effects in each song. It’s hard for me to get over the violence though. There were moments that truly hurt my soul. I don’t even know what to rate this.

I guess I'm too old now, my nostalgia for the music is battling my adult brain because the childish skits and lyrics just don't do it for me anymore and I had to fight to slog through this one.

A decent amount of good to great songs, but boy does the whole shock tactic of Eminem’s lyrics run dry by the end of it. Could’ve really left most of the second half out and it would’ve felt much better to listen all the way through. 6/10

good rhythm, striking vibes, harsh lyrics

Lyrics too violent for my taste.

Stan and The Real Slim Shady are obviously bangers and there’s some nice production in other parts but man, he’s such a cringey edgelord like bro, your whole “I don’t give a fuck” attitude doesn’t work when your constantly making disstracks why are you dissing everyone if you don’t care? 5/10

Appropriate for the first album to be by the artist who got me into music over two decades ago. Eminem is unbelievably gifted and one of the most technically gifted rappers of all time. Shocking to listen back to some of the lyrics I was listening to as a young teen.. Pretty good album, likely to have enjoyed this more as a teen.

i'm not sure how to feel about this album. listening to it in 2023, it has aged *really* poorly in many ways. the lyrics are incredibly raw and real, but they go too far by today's standards in many cases. that being said, it's still a remarkable display of eminem's songwriting prowess, and i can't take that away from it.

I’m not a hip hop fan and frankly this was way too violent. Not sure how Marshall wasn’t committed to a mental institution after this one. Yet surprisingly, it kept me engaged, the songs were well formulated, and it was fun to listen to. Maybe lost some juice towards the end, but sheesh he’s got some bars. Quite possibly the only instance of a white man being a credible rapper. I am notorious for over ranking my true feelings on hip hop, so here ya go.

It takes some weird kind of talent to get people to rally behind rapping about raping your mom and killing your baby mama. That being said, I’m a fan of this album. I got grounded for stealing it from my uncle when I was like 7, and 14 years later I see my dad’s point … I liked this album though, his coming out interview from The Interview makes a whole lotta sense. 3.5 stars

Ahh the favorite album of my middle school bullies/former close friends! As skilled as Eminem is at his craft his influence and legacy both broadly and on me personally from those shitheads worshipping him docks this down quite a bit.

Solid album with some bops but some songs just 100% miss

Although I appreciate the art, I could do without the violence, homophobia and misogyny.

Mislike Dido sterkt, men ellers greit. Minne meg om når eg va liten

Edgy for the sake of it

A bit much but he's a lyrical gebius

I know I'm going to be in the minority, but this album is so violent I couldn't finish listening to it. I'll give it 3 stars because Eminem is talented & a good story teller, but the misogyny & anger is off the charts. This is my main gripe about rap & hip hop, and it honestly turns my stomach. I couldn't listen to this album when it was released & I couldn't finish it now.

100 / 1069 Didn’t age as well I thought it may but still a decent album. Would be 3.5, I’ll round down.

already liked him etc

I like Em's writing, but I absolutely hate hip hop albums that are over an hour. 3.5 / 5.

……too much anger and swearing for my current stage in life/mental health.

ok i was pleasantly surprised by this album, once i forced myself to listen objectively i liked it a lot more.

A real gem when it first came out

A hard one to rate - this is by far one of my fav hip-hop albums on the list to date given the 5-star bars and overall exemplary wordplay that Mathers is able to lay down faster than one can blink. That being said, the homophobia and misogyny that crops up in the later half of the album is hard to stomach and permanently strands the LP in the early 2000s, unnecessarily aging what could’ve been a timeless album. Gonna have to hit the middle of the road and give this one 3/5, but man I wish I could give it the full 5.

Great storytelling and there’s no doubt Eminem is a brilliant rapper but musically meh and it feels long and unfocused in places

This is tough. You get the clarity, talent and absolute rawness mixed in with the lyrics of a 16 year old spotty incel locked in his bedroom. Or do you? Is the character? Is that the point? Reality is I don't care, you suss it out, I'll hum along to Stan and then move on with life

Eminem reacts to his newfound fame, with his trademark tongue twister rhymes. There’s fantastic production by Dr. Dre, and some lines are genuinely funny, but the pure shock of Em’s debut feels stale here (not to mention the shocking amount if homophobia and misogyny-I mean, there’s an entire song in which he imagines graphically murdering his ex-wife).

This came out when I was 20, so was on the top of the target for this - And at the time the bravado, the jokes, the skits, all seemed funny, and the whole thing was a real rush, pushing the boundaries. Revisiting that 20 years later and honestly it's just crass. "it's just a joke!" people would say... but then it does become a playbook for the worst people out there. Stan is meant to be the answer to that but it's a weak response to the rest of it. Can't deny the songwriting is outstanding - so I can't rate it lower than 3, but really, the fact that this became so acceptable and mainstream has to be seen as a bit of a failure all around.

(NEED A RELISTEN) Much better than expected. This was peak Eminem, when as an artist he was approaching his own controversy in a creative, genuine, unapologetic, and angst-filled way. Not to mention his technical ability being not only shown off, but also complimented by pop-beats and collaborations, such as Dido.

Mjög löng, hlustaði bara á helminginn. Góður rappari en ekki alveg mín tónlist

Great rapping, subject matter is quite dated. Good for its time but struggles to hold up in the modern era

I'm not sure how I'm feeling about this. I never listened to Eminem other than hearing his singles when out and about. Lyrically, there are a lot of great ideas here - Stan is the standout with its epistolary structure and point of view, Who Knew made me chuckle a couple of times, and The Way I Am and The Real Slim Shady has some cutting critiques of the music industry. Unfortunately, a lot of the lyrical themes have aged like milk. Homophobia? I think it turns out have a lot more respect for Eminem as an artist and songwriter than I assumed that I did, but this probably isn't a record I'll be listening to much in the future, if at all.

It’s like the music is good but he’s cringe

Eminem is a great rapper. I don't love all the themes he chooses, the mysogeny and homophobia. The little skits don't interest me.

I’ve never really been an Eminem fan and this album is a good example. The “hits” seem too much like “joke rap” to me and I really can’t take him seriously. He’s a very gifted rapper and talented, but aside from the lyrics, the music just really isn’t very good.

This was one of my favorite albums growing up. It is an amazing piece of work. I would have given it a 5/5, 15 years ago. It is also extremely influential. "Stan" is now a word in the OED and Kendrick Lamar had a track on his latest album that was a clear nod to the track. It's lyrically and conceptually very clever and it's supposed to be provocative, however, looking back I don't think the homophobia and misogyny on it is ok. Even if it's justified as being a commentary on his relationship with the media at the time or as being spoken by a character. The fact is that the homophobia and misogyny on this album was parroted in real life without the context and without any sense of irony and it certainly contributed to the damaging homophobic environment that young gay people had to endure growing up at the time. Because of this, it's hard to rate. I will have to settle on a conflicted 3/5

Hard to see the great parts past the homophobic shit

This album is very controversial and tough to rate. Very homophobic and misogynistic which makes sense coming from his background, but doesn’t excuse these blatantly crude lyrics. So on one side… yikes. And on the other side, he is creative at his art, he puts the words together in unique ways that are really interesting. Overall a tough album to rate.

Bra låtar men cringe aura. De edgy texterna och delivery:n funkar inte för mig.

Vulgar

now that I am An Old I can recognize that this album is musically impressive and also honestly kind of horrifying in a way that didn't quite hit when i was 16

The victim complex schtick gets tiring after a bit but there are some great songs and beats on here. Was going to be a 4 but some tracks on the back half (especially Kim) and all the skits bring it down.

I can't decide if all the lyrics about his public image and his relationship with his fans and all that is interesting, or self indulgent and repetitive. Any way, some good stuff, but pretty of its time as well

I was a teenager when this was released and I really liked it at the time. I've since grown up, my sensibilities have changed and though the quality is still there, the whole thing is just a hot problematic mess of misogyny and homophobia. There's some monster talent on this, great beats and hooks by Dre and some great tracks like Stan that will always stand up but now it's hard to listen to. I won't be coming back.

Didn't age well

flow, hooks, beats, vitriol

In een grijs verleden veel gedraaid, cool om weer te horen. Hoewel Hiphop nooit mijn ding is geweest vond ik dit toch best tof.

This album aged better than the Slim Shady LP. I still find it hard to believe how into Eminem I was in middle school, I could have ended up much differently if I had kept listening to him religiously. It is a pretty good album, but I just hate the use of slurs in pretty much any music so it takes me out of it when it is just so prevalent.

i’ve always struggled with eminem. the production and actual rapping are genuinely brilliant. the lyrics are terrible, and i just really cant get past that. i don’t think i can go below a 3 just because of the technical proficiency here, but with better (less heinous) lyrics this could easily be a 5.

God, my old review is so cringeworthy. No use defending some of Eminem's rhetoric here, no matter how ironic it may be. There are just better rappers worth more of your time, and while there are some great songs here, it does not deserve to be considered among the best.

He’s alright

Edgy white boy rap

The definitive shock rap album. Has some great hits and hilarious bits. Pretty incredible how much of this album has inspired the current pop culture.

I'm a big fan of this guy, but this isn't his best album. I get that it's "Marshal" - not Eminem or Slim Shady - so it's more "real" or whatever. This album's just a little too angry for my taste. But, it's still good.

If you like rap, the ability in both the writing and the delivery is undeniable. And the underlying commentary about the pious tendency to equate words with actual doing of things (or even endorsement) is apt, even more so in its time. But I find the product exhausting at length, the relentless kill kill kill. Like this current genre of movies where the action scenes are copiously punctuated by (when not entirely composed of) people getting shot in the head at point blank range.

250 albums in and I think this is the most entertaining hip hop album I've had so far. Hip hop isn't my style but Eminem may be my favorite

He's a great rapper with great beats, but I remembered why I didn't like him even back in the day. Angry lyrics about wife beating and rape just aren't for me.

It's alright

: The Real Slim Shady).

Très confrontant comme album pour plusieurs de ses textes. Une production impeccable. Quelqu’un a décrit son style comme horrorcore rap. On est vraiment là souvent ici, particulièrement avec Kim. La chanson Stan est un classique avec un beat parfait.

i'm quite torn about this album. i'll start with the positives: there's no denying how catchy eminem's songs are! these hits are fire. "stan" and "the real slim shady" are such bangers after all these years. the cultural significance of those two songs alone! i grew up listening to some of eminem's music and i never realized the horror aspect of his songs. "amityville" in particular. i was impressed. but despite eminem creating good music, i have some serious concerns. i didn't fully realize as a kid how often he says certain slurs. or how awful his murder fantasy song "kim" is. i suppose you could say it's only a horror story, but considering that is his former partner's name and domestic violence is very real--well, i have reservations. it makes me very uncomfortable to listen to that song. i always do admire artists who are not afraid to be their true self (he even wrote "the way i am" to show this!). i suppose this is just eminem just expressing himself through music. if you're able to focus on just the music, well, he does it very well! i'll be fair and give a middle of the road vote of 3.

Still as fresh today. Too long with some edits it get a better rating

Unfortunately only a bit better than the Slim Shady LP. Still can't get behind the slim shady persona and it's silly, immature song topics. The more serious topics were the better songs however 2-3 good songs couldn't make up for the long runtime and a series of rather uninspiring songs

Don't think this is as strong as some of his later stuff but there's some good tracks here. As per usualy the skits detract on subsequent listens

Maybe I wasn't in an Eminem mood, but I found myself enjoying The Slim Shady lp more than this. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of great tracks here, some of Eminem's all time greatest even. At the same time, the quality here feels more all over the place. Em's trademark anger, while handled well in some places, can feel pretty tiring for this albums duration. I also wasn't too keen on how much he focused on his growing popularity in the lyrics, like its fine for two songs, but especially towards the middle of the album it felt like thats all he wanted to talk about. Favorites: "Stan", "The Real Slim Shady", "Drug Ballad"

Both Eminem albums? 1 year apart. Nah. Surely you drop this one to make room for something new and groundbreaking. Still, when I look at what's on this it's hard to argue against. Bought it, like everyone else when it came out, same as the debut. Kind of not interested in listening again though.

Day 1. There is a lot to love about this album. There's a lot that makes me very uncomfortable. "Kim" is a horrible track.

Gets a higher vote for old school listening. It isn’t actually that great now with age.

Türkçe yazalım. Dota oynarken dinledim lanei kaybettim

What I lik of rap and hiphop music is the social claim that is shown in its lyrics. Interesting point of study. Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972), known professionally as Eminem (/ˌɛmɪˈnɛm/; formerly stylized as EMINƎM), is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is credited with popularizing hip hop in middle America and is critically acclaimed as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Eminem's global success and acclaimed works are widely regarded as having broken racial barriers for the acceptance of white rappers in popular music. While much of his transgressive work during the late 1990s and early 2000s made him widely controversial, he came to be a representation of popular angst of the American underclass, and has been cited as an influence for many artists of various genres. About Rap and hiphop. Interesting is who is assumed as a "subculture" (which should be the culture in this case?) Hip hop music or hip-hop music, also known as rap music, is a genre of popular music developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans, Latino Americans and Caribbean Americans in the Bronx borough of New York City in the 1970s. It consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records (or synthesized beats and sounds), and rhythmic beatboxing. While often used to refer solely to rapping, "hip hop" more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing, turntablism, scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks.

Ugh, the guy can rap alright, but he's a massive tool. The homophobia, misogyny, and general edgelordishness of it all are pretty tiresome. 😒 Fave track - eh, "Stan" I guess - gotta give him props for managing to verb a proper noun...

Great beats, questionable lyrics

never really been an eminem fan, but it turns out teenage me heard this album in my friends car so much that i know it pretty well. I was tempted to give this a high score as some of the tracks are pretty good and its fairly solid as a full album, but there's some massive elephants in the room. calling people faggots in a song is pretty wild for these days and the fucking skit songs make my skin crawl.

Slick, with great production. I don't like the dude, but this is pretty infectious.

A hard one to rate - creative, great production, but unpleasant - hadn't listened to the whole album before, won't listen to it again

Guidance counselor music

Crude, rude, unforgettable dude.

Quite explicit, sometimes seems to be just for the sake of outrage and shock value rather than because it actually adds anything. Hard-hitting and candid on the non-skit tracks (of which there were too many for my taste), would prefer more in this style. Really enjoyed Stan, The way I am and I'm back, all of which I knew from before. Perhaps the other tracks may grow on me, but as already stated, the overly explicit nature of some tracks, apparently just for the sake of being that, makes me hesitant to bother listening to the whole album again.

Good album, one of Eminem’s scarier albums as he uses his music to fantasize about handling his personal problems in a violent fashion.

this man says some weird shit. but he made a career out of it and i respect that. some of the lyrics are just gross though

Surprisingly acceptable since I don’t really like rap/hip-hop. I did accidentally download the censored version which sucked a lot of joy out with the whole flow being destroyed by constant missing words - but that also means it’s full of swearing which is an odd lack of variety and articulation against the clever wordplay throughout including a joke about being a bad influence on 4&5 year olds! Eminem has a far less harsh and annoying voice than I recall. Mostly clever and listenable.

Virtuosic rapping, but the beats are honestly lackluster in some songs, and the whole thing neatly fits into the definition of "too much" sometimes.

Long time lurker, first time listener ... to an entire Eminem album. Whoa this is one angry white dude. His lyrical dexterity is pretty impressive though, he seemingly can make any sentence rhyme and he sprays the room with words like it’s from an AK47. His misogynistic, homophobic and sophomoric schtick gets old after awhile though, or is he actually railing against all that, dunno because it’s a fine line. Dude needs to chill a bit though. I thought Stan which sampled Dido was nice.

Kind of repetitive to be honest. skits were funny, a couple good ones but not what I remembered

Man he just so angry with Britney and Christina. A few less homophobic slurs and this would be a 4

This is so hard to rate!! I'm trying not to overthink this because there's so many factors. Big main positive factors include; artistic/creative genius, unique voice and rap style, unashamed discussion of hard-hitting topics, an intense journey mapped out through listening to one album. Big main negative factors include; what could be perceived as misogyny, homophobia, profiting off of the world's deepest misery, promoting/potentially inspiring domestic violence. I have to appreciate how incredibly deep and influential this album is/was but also I can't say I simply love it, it's too complex so I think the best route to take for me is a 3. I am so torn between the very top and the very bottom and I think that is actually part of the beauty (is beauty the right word? It's fascinating) of this album and a lot of Eminem's work.

Hard to know what I thought of this. Like I enjoyed a lot of it and know Eminem is a rather a legend, I guess a lot of it is story telling but I did find all the racism, sexism and homophobia a little jarring.

Hip hop. Algunas melodías y ritmos interesantes.

3,5; classic from Em undoubtedly, it has a lot of Eminem in it, but imo it aged very poorly, starting with homophobic lyrics, ending on old-fashioned voice modulation and beats, even though album contains 2 classics like Stan or Real Slim Shady. Some of another songs are enjoyable as well and they have really unique vibe, I think that I should mention the song Kim at this point.

listened to again one of a kind

3.t5 stars, angry but playful

Oh Slim, you poor boy sitting on your porch wondering what the world can offer you and how you put your fist so far up the worlds rear to prove that you are the next big rapper. I enjoyed parts of this LP but I'm like a midpoint Eminem fan, his old stuff is very vulgar which is ironic because I typically don't care about that but you can tell that he is trying to be very aggressive on this album. Every other song started getting me upset or nervous just feeling like I was being personally attacked by Marshall. He definitely hits every gender, race, and creed in his insults. People are upset at Dave Chappell for his comments about the trans community but I'm wondering what they would think about some of these tracks. But there are some bangers on here too: Stan, The real Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers, Drug Ballad.

I'm officially announcing that Eminem is overrated. Not because this album is bad (it's not), but because this is supposedly his masterpiece, and I personally don't see it. Yeah, some excellent songs on here, but it's also riddled with the skits that bogged down so many early '00s rap projects, including at least one sex skit that demands a skip and prevents this from getting any higher than a 4 star rating. I don't know, I think I prefer the Slim Shady LP and even Eminem Show to this one. The highs are very high, but most of it is in a middle ground that doesn't stick with me, and the skits range from unnecessary to painful. Still a good album and solid overall, but I can't really co-sign the classic status. Blame Ken Kaniff, not me. Favorite tracks: Stan, I'm Back, The Real Slim Shady, Who Knew, Kill You. Album art: Some have a picture of him next to some decrepit piece of furniture, I'm guessing in the house, and some are this shot of him outside the house. Either way, it's clear that he's plumbing the depths of his psyche, and I respect that. I wish it was more saturated, but it's fine. 3.5/5

solid beats. eminem is good in his job, but after listening through the album im a little full.

Det är inte ... ett bra album. han bara gnäller så mycket.

There's no denying the talent here, but the mix of gleeful horror core and whiny self absorption gets old across a whole album with nothing to lighten the mix.

Though never a fan of violent content or style of singing, this album, surprisingly, did not bother me too much, music-wise. At least it's not a noisy one. And Stan is surely a classic by now, not to mention it has endorsement from Sir Elton...

Eminem's edginess, certainly, feels dated nowadays. But back when this album came out, it was still riding the line of being pop while saying things you couldn't fathom other artists at his level of popularity saying. His abilities can't be understated either. He's undeniably a great rapper, but the shit he's usually rhyming about is of little to no interest to me. Not something I need to visit often or really infrequently for that matter. This album certainly takes me back to a place in time, though...this album gets a high 2, so I guess I'll round up to a 3...

I think there's some great songs on but is really brought by some stuff in songs that hasn't aged well and some unfunny skits.

Classic.

Some of the hits, overall kind of weird to listen to in the modern era

classic

This was never really my jam. And Eminem was basically playing to my exist age group. But the angst and anger never really resonated with me. However some great singles and writing, undeniable talent.

Very strong. Not my thing.

This was really popular when I was about 17. Not too bad, goes a bit too long. But young Eminem was angry lol. 3/5.

It was a bit of a rough listen but it still slaps.

Skilled rapper. I'm sure these lyrics were shocking when this album came out, but now seem a little tired.

Agressieve lyrics, goeie rapper. 'Stan' is een nummer dat altijd raakt. Een van de hiphop-albums die er voor mij wel mee door kan

Not my cup of tea. Bit sweary (although I like swearing, less is more) and overwrought. Might try again when I want to vent

Not my thing, but he's a seriously creative lyricist.

Eminem was better at that moment, but skits are terrible, instrumentals really boring, and eminem is so hyperactive. Don't care about the lyrics.

Good for what it was at a point in time with regard to being a new voice/perspective (one could argue that Eminem brought a different class lens to rap of the era). Not one I'd reach for on the shelf though.

This man is hella angry. I don't know why but eminem always sounds like he is parodying something to me. 2 angry/5

Strong 3, almost a 4. The lyrics are questionable in places, and very good in other places. I did enjoy this a lot more than I thought I would though, some great tracks and it's pretty consistent.

A dark angry rap album. 3RS

I can see why people say Eminem is one of the greatest rappers of all time.

3.7 - An MC with unparalleled rhyming and flow. And an artist who’s clearly working through some stuff. “Stan” marks an amazing high as its narrative unfolds like a thriller. Honest and raw in his lampooning of some of the music industry’s more toxic elements, and he doesn’t throw punches when calling out certain executives in particular. In the end though I found all the self-pity, homophobia, and mommy/Kim issues exhausting. For me while I can appreciate his consummate skill as an MC, Eminem remains an artist to enjoy in small doses.

Can’t get into him …

Interesting album. One can only hope that he's using his lyrics in a cathartic way. Good beats and song-writing though. Favorite Tracks: Stan, Criminal, The Real Slim Shad

Nonostante mi piaccia il rap, non mi ha fatto impazzire (ma l'ho ascoltato distrattamente)

Muy buen disco de rap, una forma de rapear extraordinaria todos los coros pegados los beats espectaculares, obras maestras del rap

Neato. Wish there was less cussing

It has some bangers, but i think i wont play it again

Just began and I can't go on because I am stuck listening to Stan. The chorus is incredible, oh my god. I wish Nicki Minaj would take this album as inspiration when she makes her next one... Sonically though. I cannot stand the homophobia of this record. I sit sometimes satirical? Yes. Is it all to push an image he can only portray because of his privilege? Yes. Is it good? No.

Surprisingly good, given my general dislike for the genre. Too much repetition, though: it could have been shorter/better.

Not my genre. I tried listening but just not for me

Alright I suppose

Enjoyed this back in the day but it's not aged particularly well.

raw as fuck, brutal, violent, misogynistic, fun - would like to see how it would go down if released now. Some drivel though. 6/10

It’s good and some parts are very funny, but it’s so fucking hateful.

I actually find his voice quite annoying explaining my lowish score. I can't knock his skills though.

A partir de cierto punto todas las canciones suenan exactamente igual. Tiene buenos temas, mola haber vuelto a los 15 años pero no me quedo con ninguna canción y algunas son basura. Aún así hay que valorar lo que supuso el disco en el hip hop

Angry!

Master class de producción.

Intense and angry. Not for everyday listening, but it's a true mark in time.

I had recently listen to this one from beginning to end haha, so I skipped a few tracks. The nostalgia is strong with this one.

Interesting. First time I've listened to an entire Eminem album. I have enjoyed a couple of his songs in the past including 8 Mile movie. However, this was a bit harsh.

I can't listen to these lyrics anymore in good conscience, but there's a lot of good stuff on here.

Lots of swearing and violence. Some good songs, but this was a different time

A product of its time with some legit great songs but, holy fuck, some of these lyrics are even more hurtful and offensive than I remember.

Very good musically, somewhat ruined by absurd levels of homophobia and misogyny.

-Pretty dark -dated language lmao -Rapping skills still v high

Good album

Haven’t heard this since it came out, so after 20 odd years later it sounds completely different to me. It’s a bit cringy in parts and close to the bone. Did it in two halves cos it goes on a bit.

About an hour too long. Curious how the best Eminem songs does not contain any references to fellatio.

Its alright. Really just dont really like Eminems music

Never understood the love for this album. Just Slim trying being an edgelord with very little actual meaning. It might actually hit if I found him at all threatening, but I just don't.

Not a word of his lyrics has aged well at all, but the flow's great. The whole piece struggles to provide a coherent message beyond shock value. I think he really had a hard time squaring the edginess and outsider stance that was an asset on the first album with his newfound fame.

Eminem is another in a long line of pop star assholes who think he invented being an asshole. The misogyny and homophobia is so over the top and moronic as opposed to edgy but the dope is talented and knows how to put rhymes together with enough hooks to make some of the album listenable. But some of this shit is just unlistenable ("Remember Me?", "Amityville"). And enough has been written about "Kim' and whether is legitimate art/performance, etc, etc. but it's just a really bad fucking song.

First time listening to an Eminem album in full because I hate the guy. This hasn’t done much to change my mind. Deserving of being on the list for its cultural significance and occasionally interesting production choices. I will admit that I appreciate Eminem’s ability to load a verse with internal rhymes. Just the lyrics and subject matter is turd.

Catchy songs that seemed to have gained popularity from the shock factor and the crude humor of the time. He points out society being hypocritical but still uses backhanded arguments. Dr. Dre definitely captured a sound that embodied him and it was well done, but I'm glad Eminem has matured from this, not saying his music has gotten better, but we should all move on.

In terms of lyrical content, this is a pretty easy 0. Still, there's a few decent tunes here. "The Real Slim Shady" probably the best thing here, but my god is there a sea of crap to wade through. 2 stars.

I think the song Stan is still so relevant to fandom culture and parasocial relationships nowadays, also I love Dido's "Thank You" which is sampled throughout, it's a great contrast to what's happening with the lyrics Growing up in the 00s/10s I feel like it was mandatory to know The Real Slim Shady by heart, like a lot of rap songs from this era you're never quite sure why you know it but you just do The rest of the album is very mid, I think you need to have consumed it at a very specific point in time to be into it, listening to it in 2026 is eye opening in a lot of ways

I knew Stan and The Real Slim Shady, but the rest of these tracks are just Eminem talking about himself in a less interesting way, with plenty of I'm-not-being-serious-so-it's-OK misogyny in there. I was expecting more.

Hasn't aged well. I prefer him when he's funny instead of just pure rage.

This is the first time I've listened to this full record, not because I didn't know about it, but because the people that I knew liked it in when I was younger were angry people who were cruel to me. I have obviously interacted with conversations online about it and I understand now that the anger, vitriol, and vulgarity expressed in the record is not a sincere statement of belief or intention. In other contexts, I even enjoy such transgressive elements. Maybe its just been too long or maybe I can never truly understand this record from outside myself, but I still can't get past the lyrics. Despite its intense and impressive introspection and musicality, this album will probably just never hit me right. I know he aims to provoke, and it I guess it landed. I feel like I "get it" now more than ever, and I still don't enjoy listening to it. If I do have a more serious critique to level beyond how it makes me feel, its that while the album is intentionally revolting, in both senses of the word, against popular culture, it misfires in many cases by expressing what were, or are, simply majority opinions in coarse language. While calling someone the f slur was gauche in polite society, a majority of Americans in 2000 thought that being gay was immoral. Eminem's misogyny on the record is uncomfortably violent for most, but it doesn't mean the sentiments behind it weren't broadly approved of. Too often on this record he sloppily picks easy targets, despite proving that he is capable of more on other tracks. Whether or not he meant what he said, the violent, bigoted, and hateful language present was extremely popular, and not just among people who understood that it was intentionally provocative.

Enjoyed it up to a point, then the shock value wore off and I was just left with someone being offensive for the sake of it. Nice to hear some of the songs from my past again though

There are some classic songs on here, but there is enough other stuff that I would never choose to put this on.

This is the first album I couldn't get through - I think MM is a good maybe even great MC but just not for me - his range is so narrow and I'm not in it.

There is a whole star for nostalgia - this is just awful to put yourself through

06/11 Never was a fan of Eminem but I admit there are some interesting moments in this album

I enjoy the beats, don't like the misogyny and homophobia. I think I'll stick to listening to Eminem's greatest hits every once in a while.

i hate that there are remnants in here that make me go "i get it". i get why people liked it and felt seen by it, especially in 2000. there are parts of it, like the discussion of fan culture and the media reaction to him, that are interesting. not to mention the production and music quality have gone up significantly compared to the debut. but those are not really enough to make this listenable as an album in 2026.

i respect eminem as an artist and all but man some of these tracks were vulgar and not necessary for my ears

hes faking

Listening to this album, I was reminded of those talented authors that use the foundation of a greek tragedy to justify whatever power fantasies they wish to indulge in with a veneer of prestige. This comparison is a poor one, as fascinatingly, Eminem is completely aware of this persona being largely a juvenile power fantasy. It'd be more accurate to say that in this comparison, Eminem's fickle intelligence is that power fantasy, and this indulgent and grotesque caricature of a juvenile power fantasy is that veneer. It's disappointing really, as these flashes of brilliance clearly aren't just flashes, but rather the foundation of his art, which remains obscured by blood, semen, and shit. I hear a person curbed by their nature, fame, community, beginnings, and that which runs through all of these things, their masculinity, or that which makes them slightly more than just a person. I hear the twin, nigh- inseparable fantasies of a man and a boy, and seldom, they seperate, and I hear an artist.

“how many records are you expecting to sell when your second record sends you directly to jail” made me laugh hahahhaa at times this was a truly tough listen, at times this was really cool - I can’t give it more than a two stars for the rampant homophobia and misogyny xoxo

2/5 - Wow, is this hard to rate. On the one hand, Eminem's talent and flow are probably the best I've ever heard, but his misogyny and homophobia are total shit. I listened to this a bunch when it came out, and It's an album I think you need to hear, but I really have no more stomach for the crap he has to say, no matter how good he is at saying at. I would given this a 4 or 5 at a different time.

This album was huge in late 90s and this guy was everywhere. The hits were hooky and popular and he seemed an alternative with clout in a heavily weighted genre. But none of it has aged well. He no doubt is clever and has a gift for phrasing but too many of the songs are violent, misogynistic, and offensive some 25 years later and this ends up feeling more like a blemish or stain than a beauty mark. I’ll give him points for talent but don’t really care to ever hear this again. 2/5

Kjedelige beats (med noen få unntak), pubertale tekster med sinnslidelser som krydder, irriterende stemme. Et sykdomstegn for samfunnet at dette ble så populært som det ble. Svak toer.

Slim shady is a jam, the rest of the album is filled with bigotry, homofobia and sexism, which I guess was the point.

Eminem has a reputation for some of the most technically skilled rap of all time. He also has a reputation for some of the most vulgar lyrics of all time. Technically, this lives up to Eminem's reputation as a rapper with a unique gift for flows. The hooks and beats are all strong. However, the lyrics are pretty much exactly what you'd think based on the reviews hear. There is some social and political commentary here, but there's also a lot of unnecessary vulgarity. The lyrics to songs like "Kill You" are an attempt to be as offensive as possible that just ends up sounding tedious. This music is very much from a particular point in time where the processed anger of gangster rap and nu-metal ruled the charts. It didn't really age well beyond that time period, despite a solid technical foundation. If he was more willing to write more relatable songs and less violent fantasies, this would be an all-timer. As is, I just can't do these lyrics(especially "Kim").

have you ever heard of a cartoon called the nutshack fave track: the real slim shady

So much homophobia.

Markoolio fast med ett par bra spår. Pajas

Yeah, nah. He’s talented and there is some really nice production, but this is music for suburban kids that want to seem scary. And why the fuck is this so long?

Damn. I knew Eminem was an edgelord, but I guess I memory-holed just how violent and misogynistic this album is. Mixed bag. There are some great bars, and a few tracks really land. Where I struggle is that the Slim Shady persona looks suspiciously like the person he was at the time. Transgressive art has to walk a tightrope, and a lot depends on the distance between the artist and the transgression. I kept thinking about American Psycho, which works for me because the gap between Bret Easton Ellis and Patrick Bateman is easier to trust. Ellis hasn’t given us much reason to doubt that distance. And even then, plenty of people still miss the satire and take Bateman at face value. That gap is much harder to trust on this album, especially when you’re hearing a murder fantasy about his then-wife during a period when his real life made the violence feel less theoretical. “Stan” still works for me because it feels like a story with a point of view. “Kim” collapses that distance. It feels less like performance and more like a pressure valve for real rage. The rage is being performed by the guy who actually had it, aimed at the person he actually had it toward. Even in my most charitable interpretation, I’m not sure what point it’s trying to make other than catharsis. Which is pretty fucked. I’ll admit that my own proximity to domestic violence is shaping how I’m experiencing this album revisit. He got clean, became a dedicated father, and by all accounts grew past this version of himself. But knowing what was happening around this album changes how I hear it, and I can’t really unhear it. I can admire the songcraft, but “it’s just a character” doesn’t fully survive contact with the context. And outside of my incessant moralizing, large parts of it dragged for me. The skits wore thin fast. But it made me think. 2/5.

a couple of alright songs, but not really my cup of tea.

5.5 / 10

what the hell what the hell what the hell what the hell what the hell what the hell what the hell

This ia probably the best from this era of Eminem and it features the highs where his controversal style works (Stan, The Way I Am) and where it just comes off as edgy (Kim, Amityville). At least this had some good songs compared to Slim Shady LP, though the lyrics is arguably worse, especially in the second half.

There are some great songs on here but this didn't age well overall. The misogyny etc is exhausting.

Green River - Good Commotion - Decent Tombstone Shadow - Decent Wrote a Song For Everyone - Decent Bad Moon Rising - Good Lodi - Decent Cross-Tie Walker - Good Sinister Purpose - Stylish The Night Time is The Right Time - Decent Broken Spoke Shuffle - Decent Glory Be - Decent

< the Beatles As someone who was the right age for Eminem when he released these albums, I have just never understood the appeal. Some of his more goofy shit is entertaining but holy shit this album takes itself too damn serious. No thank you

This is difficult because I find Eminem so off-putting and a lot of his shock value stuff is just tiring but then sometimes there is a song like 'Kim' that is so reprehensible and insane and yet this guy was like one of the biggest artists in the world for a minute. It's just very fascinating to me. He certainly has skill and the production is OK sometimes. And his vision of the world is so depressing. I have no idea how to square all this with a number rating.

No me gustó.

There is an incredible level of skill, and talent on display here. Even as a “non-rap” person, I can pick up that Eminem is in a rare tier as a performer, and this album probably hits pretty close to his prime. That said, it kinda sucks that so much of that talent is in service of a particular kind of early 2000s edginess/shock value that I just find to be kinda gross. I know that the performing-to-shock has its place/validity, but this went a bit beyond “wow, what challenging themes to confront.”

Abrasive. Not interested

This one was hard to rate for me. First, I thought I was going to give it a three or a four but I had all weekend to think on it. I decided to rate it much lower. At first wall I was listening, I was struck by the message that people need to take responsibility for themselves and not blame the ills of society on musicians. While that might be the case in part, I also feel the majority of this album is shock for the sake of shock. I do realize that this is probably the point in driving home his message, but it was a bit much. There are some absolute classic songs on this album though. Definitely the hardest review that I've had so far.

really hasn't aged well

Memorable songs, it isn’t bad if you ignore all the lyrics. I do like Stan though

😅🤢 I like some of his work but.....not much. He's a provocateur and I don't wanna feed the troll.

eh, stan saves it

Too much homophobia

I have mixed feelings about this album. I’ll start with what I liked. I thought the actual rapping was really good. There’s something about Eminem’s flow that tickles my brain in just the right way. I think Stan is a masterpiece of a song. The storytelling was so captivating, that I stopped what I was doing to listen to it with my full attention. That is where my notable praises end. A big aspect of this album that I didn’t particularly like was the lyrics. The over the top lyrics felt like a gimmick, and I got tired of it by the end of the album. I’m not the biggest fan of his style of saying anything for shock value, and to make people mad. There may be some artistic merit to it that I’m not seeing, but it comes off as immature to me. Shock value can only get you so far. I didn’t necessarily hate this album, but I don’t see myself ever listening to it again.

More important than good. Eminem is a good rapper but his lyrics are often juvenile

This was an iconic album for me in college and thought that it was the best rap album of all time before I started really listening to hip hop

This is more a calculated marketing piece than actual art. By very deliberate intent, it's provocative and polarizing. I would describe the experience akin to taking a nice, hot, soothing shower with toxic sewage water. The rundown: (-) Shock value for the sake of shock value. Lame. (+) Transparent self-awareness about using said tactic. Respectable. (+) Beats and flow are tight and make you want to listen again. (-) Lyrics are trite and make you want to never listen again. (+) Overall production. (-) Skits. (+) Tapping into and exposing some very real, very ugly human nature and hypocrisy. (-) Ultimately being just another artifact in that pile of ugliness and hypocrisy. Even though it deserves it (practically begs for it), I'm actually not going to fail this since it DID achieve what it set out to do: prove that people are easily triggered and manipulated. Any points for aesthetics? Nah.

There is a notable amount of nostalgia to this album. So there is that. I wouldn’t consider this Eminem’s best work. This also leaned into more shock value than intrigue.

It was ok.

5 for nostalgia, 1 because this really didn't age well

“These people think it’s a crime to tell them what’s on my mind”. Well bud. Everything on your mind is a crime.

man he was so big in the 2000 but 25 years allater this albumn just lands as whiney; an entire albumn about how hard it is to be famous/top of the rap industry... along with a desperate wish to not take any resposibility for thie things his music inspired in people

I do side on the thought group that a 13/14yr old did this. Kim was a head scratcher and I wasn’t surprised or shocked by the album because the first song made the rest of the album predictable

Quite a mad little dude. I would like to go back and lower by rating for the Slim Shady LP but I can't. This was better than that one just cuz it had some tracks that were actually solid (less than 3 though). Most of it is trash though. I get he just makes most of this up to piss people off, but why? There's just no need. I did find it funny how much he hates NYSNC.

Looking at the cover, I was expecting a deeper and vulnerable Eminem. I was wrong (with the exception of Stan), and I don't know why I'd even think that. Undeniably, his lyrics and his flow are masterclass but the music itself and what sings about doesn't really appeal to me. Stan is really good though. And Kim is one of the worst songs ive ever heard.

Despite being from Detroit and still living in the area), I never got into Eminem, though I certainly didn't hate him. His style can push some people's buttons, and I have no problem with that. I knew somewhat what I was in for. So after finally giving this a listen a quarter century after its release, I gotta say that I don't love this all that much. The man is a superiorly talented rapper, but his recurring shtick as a 'psychotic court jester type' gets really grating quickly. And in the other direction, songs like "Stan" or "Kim" are dark psychodramas, but I don't really want to listen to them on the regular. There is an art in that, but on the whole, this is too crass and infantile for me, despite a mountain of talent and a few okay songs.

I liked the beat and his style but so homophobic

I think I liked this a lot more when I was in high school. Can’t say it aged well 25 years later. There is something here, but I’m not sure I like it. Handful of good tracks. Bitch Please 2. Stan. Real Slim Shady. The Way I Am. Weighed down by a lot of shit. Strong 2/5

I've always liked Eminem. Great beats, unique cadence, and of course amazing rhymes. I was bopping along to the beat this morning, really enjoying the album but man....those lyrics are something else. It was way too much for me, relentlessly and offensive which I know is his shtick but give it a break now and then. Nearly 90 minutes of that got to be painful. I think he may even be angrier than Raekwon.

honestly i didn’t really like it. for the first songs i was hyped, but then they all started to sound the same to me and i got kinda bored. still i found a few really good, kill me and marshall marthers, but probably because i already knew them from back when i first tried to get into eminem. i recognized that it’s a good album artistically speaking, but it’s not my style and i’m not sure that i will listen to it again.

I don’t like it

Liked Stan !

It’s just so so so angry it’s exhausting and entirely off putting.

It's a well-produced LP, but you have to approach it in the right frame of mind - it leans into the very darkest of its jokes, and isn't half as clever as it thinks it is.

I am gay

Obviously talented, but the lyrics are off putting.

No sé porqué permitimos como sociedad dejar que un incel pajero se hiciera tan famoso.

The production slaps and his delivery is virtuosic, but i can't get pass some of the lyrical content. I've changed too much to keep bumping.

This is the first time I've listened to one of his albums all the way through instead of just the singles, and honestly didn't find much to go back to outside of a handful of tracks. Obviously Eminem is incredibly influential and deserves a lot of the success he's gotten, but there just isn't much material here that justifies it being over an hour long. But again maybe it's just not my cup of tea. Standouts are Stan, The Way I Am, and Drug Ballad.

(2.5) something about his voice tickles my brain

I don't know how necessary this album is compared to Slim Shady. I listened to it a lot at the time but it seems leaden, over-macho and kinda no fun to me now.

Do not need two Eminem albums Do not need two Eminem albums Do not need two Eminem albums Do not need two Eminem albums

You cant deny the sampling artistry but the anger and misogyny is hard to sit thru. Inspired use of the Dido track, though.

The music is catchy and the quick rhymes. But I dislike the misogyny so much it ruins it for me.

Hates his mom Beats his wife Loves his daughter Kim was a hard listen. Def a few classic songs here but I think it did not age that well as a project. Very influent in terms of style and aggression and persona building. The general perception of teen listeners who grew up in eastern europe in the early 2000's thought this is what hip hop is all about.

Hay temazos y al mismo tiempo una colección insoportable de misoginia

It's so funny how there used to be a whole community of people who were like "all rap except Eminem sucks because it's about women and violence" because they clearly never listened to a single song of his. I don't see so much of that type of thing on the internet anymore, which is nice to see. I didn't particularly like this aside from the Dido sample, but it's interesting how much of it I was already passively aware of, certainly one of the more significant albums I've heard for this.

I don’t think this will ever resonate with a version of me that’s not 13

⭐️⭐️ I started this shit and I HAD to turn it off a third of the way through. Idk if the second half somehow redeems the album, but DAMN that first portion was unbearable 💔
