Reviews (page 11 of 13)

This is an album where I really feel how hard certain biases have imprinted themselves onto me. I appreciate his songwriting, the new ideas he brings to the singer/songwriter format and the influence this had on culture as a whole - however, I personally am very rhythm influenced and found myself not able to engage with his work on the level that I would've liked. It's a classic in a genre that I've never really taken to, so my rating is less about his individual work and more about where it fits in for me.

Sort of thing you have to be in the mood for. Not something I usually am, but it has a pleasing sound and dynamic. Maybe save for a rainy day.

Ahead of his time

Very good recording, big soundstage, smooth songs, but a little too „easy“. Sound often like Simon& Garfunkel. His voice is too equal to all songs, no tempo, passion. But a record I will buy, if i come across a good copy

Calming album. I really enjoyed Man In A Shed

Easy listening. Anything spectacular? No. All brilliant tracks to have on in the background? Yes.

Cosy folk arrangements

big chill and rainy day vibes. kind of like the non-jazz side of john martyn. most songs were 4 stars but a couple were lesser so entire album gets 3

Not really my kind of genre, but sounds ahead of its time. Could have been released 10-20 years ago and I would not have been surprised. Great acoustic guitar playing, voice is okay. Maybe if put into regular rotation, the songs and his voice will grow on me.

Three Hours is good. Complex. Drake's vocals on Fruit tree are incredible, and neither the strings nor oboe overpower the song. Saturday Sun is a great closer.

solid chill nick drake album

5/10. Something of a snoozer, but not unpleasant. I could see myself enjoying this in an alternate timeline

Plods along wearily.

Easy listening, nice guitar, enjoyable

Nice, soft, contemplative singer-songwritery stuff. A bit drug tinged, which is par for the course in this era. Some major-minor switching gave some songs a Beatlesy touch. It was largely an album for the background though, no real changes of pace to make you listen more closely. A solid 3.

I had never heard of Nick Drake before 5 leaves left was recommended to me. So let me start by saying that the album title is fitting because listening to this thing is about as entertaining as watching the leaves fall off an autumn tree until there are only 5 left. I get why people like this as it's not all bad. Songs like 3 Hours, Day is Done, Cello Song, Fruit Tree and Saturday Sun while not making any playlist of mine are "ok" enough. But then you have stuff like Way to Blue which is almost pretentious in how depressing it is. I guess Nick Drake was manically depressed to the point where somedays he couldn't even walk or speak. So I get why it exists but, damn man... Bands who make emo music can take a real lesson from this dude on what real depression sounds like. All in all Its a pretty forgettable collection of songs that I won't be returning to, nor will I even remember after shoving a fistful of Xanax down my throat now that it's over. I'll give it a 3 star rating but its actually 2.5 Stars.

i mean sure... 7/10

Not bad. The lyrics and instrumentals are good, but no song seems distinct to me. It was good for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Favorite Song: #6 Recommend: If you're a fan of folk, sure. It's worth a passing glance.

Bit depressing

Before starting this journey, I always thought singer-songwriter was one of my favourite genres. It turns out, that's not really true. Anyway, I can see why this album is on the list. It's well done and extremely pleasant, it's just not really my jam.

Has the same beautiful, pastoral, folky sound but the songs felt less developed than what he went on to do on Bryter Layter

Relaxing, woodland folky. The music meanders gently. A nice listen. His lisp was distracting a handful of times though

I love a couple Nick Drake songs but this album was more boring than I had hoped it would be

Drake's too melancholy for my taste, but I respect him. I wouldn't seek out anything on this album, but it was pleasant enough to have on in the background.

Fine for background music, but not when you're trying to stay awake.

DEPRESSING!!!! The strings added nice flourishes but this was pretty tough for me to get through if I'm being honest. I'll give him a 3 for benefit of the doubt.

Betty said she prayed today For the sky to blow away Or maybe stay She wasn't sure

Tone of his voice is really nice, really slow album overall, was ok as background noise though

Not bad

Wasn’t expecting much from this but it was pretty chill Good background music

Perfect late-night chill out vibe. Day is Done is poetic and beautiful. The whole album puts me in mind of parties back in the day when at 3am there’d only be a handful of people awake, one boy in the corner with a guitar and this or something of this ilk on the turntable. As I’ve called it before it’s 1960s navel-gazing but sweet nevertheless

Sweet, pleasant... Nick Drake's voice and guitar float sweetly from song to song like honeybees on a lavender plant. I enjoyed it, not a sour note in the whole affair, but there wasn't anything that elevated it to a 4, at least not on the first listen.

I thought this was pleasant enough, though the strings often got in the way of his singing. I prefer Pink Moon.

Well, now I know what I'll put on if I'm ever stranded in a cabin with my girlfriend and I'm trying to keep her calm and docile. This was some gentle music.

Nice. 3.5/5

Highlights: "River Man," "Three Hours," "Cello Song" Drake had found himself musically from this debut, granted a couple pieces sound very similar and rote. It's the lyrics that aren't there yet. The lyrics are too lazy, repetitive, needy, and self-impressed to have the same impact that Pink Moon would have later. As much as he moans here, he hadn't really learned to be vulnerable yet. The only thing that separates this from a Donovan record is some glimmers of compelling harmony and a beautifully gentle voice. That's plenty, but it wasn't this artist's potential.

Yep this was definitely a Nick Drake album. I think I liked it a little less than Pink Moon, even though in a lot of ways this one was actually more engaging; more varied song structures, sounds, a few more instruments, etc. I did enjoy it, although it is kind of soft and blurry in the middle. I fully understand the praise he gets even if he's not an everyday kind of listen for me. Best song: Three Hours

I'm not a big fan of 60s folk but do really enjoy Nick Drake. This album did drag a bit for me but still was enjoyable.

This is one cosy album Way to blues opening was sick The music itself is great, love the violin/cello parts "There was a man who lived in a shed, spent most of his days out of his head" was very funny. That song slapped

Pretty good song writing, not really my bag tho.

Hard to believe it was written in 1969. Dark and textured, love when you can hear more guitars than just the acoustic (which is also lovely, btw)

Very mellow and easy listening, some stand out pieces but the album as a whole doesn't match my taste in folk.

I mean it’s a pretty album for sure, but my god how much Nick drake is there and how many more is this list gonna make me do 3.5/5

Pleasant 3/5

Hotline bling and that

Only really two different songs - the piano one and the guitar one. He's a clear influence on a bunch of more engaging and successful bands and artists. I think I liked Pink Moon more, at least a little, but I'm not listening to it again to check!

Not quite country, but it was relaxing and seems like it should be accompanied by sweet tea and a good sunset

I can see why people would enjoy this, but it's just not for me. Well written lyrics and beautiful guitars.

Quite pleasant, but nothing special. I'd never heard of Nick Drake before - it seems that he only made three records before his premature death.

Parts suggest that this record inspired thousands of background songs for emotive moments popular TV dramas, “Gray’s Anatomy”’s weepiest moments, and this is unfair. But the songs have their strange, awkward bits, and the morbid strings - on “River Man” - for example, are too engaging to sit in the background. Never heard this before, approached it warily, and was grabbed almost immediately. His words and intonation are circumspect. Having begun by blaming him for soap music, I now accuse him of providing the vocal template for “Spiderland”. The recording is great, everything clear, uncluttered, and close, played to head across pillow. A lot of it is fiddlier than I usually would tolerate, similar to “Astral Weeks”. The folk-jazz experiments of the period have an earnestness that slightly repels me, despite my admiring the intentions and elegance, and feeling nostalgic for these few years of emotive experimentation that I learned secondhand through childhood. Hippy teachers and children’s programmes, man. I like this, but drifted away after the first couple of tracks. Will listen to again. For now, a cagey, perhaps unjust three stars.

Is it an intimate folk rock masterpiece? Or a collection of pointless folksy ramblings? I honestly have no clue. A decent record.

I liked the vibe!

Good rainy day music.

Ni fu, ni fa

Sleepy but enjoyable

I fear Mr. Nick might have ate here.

It sufficed as background music and was very pleasant when I listened closely, but it never grabbed my attention. I felt like I was shopping for slacks at Macy's on a random Thursday in August. Not an ideal day, but the sales are great and lord knows I need new chinos.

This was one of the few albums I did when I discovered this generator years ago. I’ve listened to Nick Drake’s soothing voice via shuffle for a few years now. It’s a good album, but nothing that gets my panties in a bunch.

Slow and calm, I don't think it's quite the level of forgettable but it comes close, slow and chill, was able to get through it though

Garden state song guy, it’s decent

Not great. His voice is, and the album IS haunting, but it's not at all my style.

He's got a lovely voice. A bunch of tracks on here I really like. There's a real melancholic undercurrent with the whole album. I can see a lot of influence on later albums like like Beck's 'Sea Change'. There's also some interesting musical arrangements in here that I dig. It's mostly quite nice, but I feel like a lot of it bleeds together as one. I think this is more of a selective listen with a few individual tracks for me rather than listening to the whole thing in one go.

This album is a 2.5 for me, some good guitar bits, but feels a bit boring to me.

Didn't love it. A couple songs were really good but the majority is too mellow and kinda all sounds the same. Definitely a time and a place kind of album. Good overall but not my cup of tea.

Gentle but sincere. Has underlying darkness. Overall I enjoyed it but just a little too soft and muted for me.

Driven mostly by his vocals this is very pleasant

Listen to if sad, a few good cuts

I have become more and more convinced that I may be judging some albums more harshly based on my mood at the time of listening. I absolutely loved Pink Moon and was excited about listening to this but it’s mostly left me cold so far (about half way through). I’m hoping I can find the beauty…. Edit: It was ok. Worth a 3, I think

3/5. Another beautiful album from Drake, not as good as Bryter but it may grow on me like the other one. This one feels too quiet and the other one had great instrumentation which made it stand out.

Not doing a whole lot for me personally. The songwriting has some true beauty to it but I’m not the biggest fan of his delivery. I have no complaints about the guitar work

Erster Song geil. Cello song auch nice, n bischen wie Sympathy for the devil.

I'm still not the biggest folk lover but this album is pretty okay. I'm gonna be honest for a minute and say it's really good to cry to because I got this on Valentine's Day and I am heavily missing my boyfriend because we're long distance and he can't be up by me until maybe next month. Way To Blue is reminding me of Sweeney Todd in a way that I can't quite place. There's just something about it, both the vocals and instrumental.

The album was just alright. Nothing great about it, but nothing bad about it. Not really a three, but I will round up.

Instrumentals are immaculate but the drab vocals and lyrics kinda ruin it. Love the intermingling of the simple instrument use throughout, but I also wish more incorporated the jazz influence of the last track which was banger. 5/10

1/28/2023 really a brilliant record, i am impressed. didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the catchy melodies. "time has told me" was my favorite, so damn catchy.

It's OK. Not my thing tho.

Very relaxing folk album. Has dark and cinematic feeling. Very dramatic. Feels like something to listen around the campfire. Favorite track: Time Has Told Me

To me, it sounded nice, but it wasn't anything special. I would never turn it off, but I would also never put it on to begin with.

- Only ever listened to Pink Moon before - Didn't click for me in the same way as that one, but still enjoyed it - Preferred the songs towards the end of the album to some of the first ones - Fav songs: Saturday Sun, Thoughts of Mary Jane, Day is Done

2.5 ster.

Hele chille rustgevende folkmuziek.

Quite good, worth a relisten when wanting calming vibes

I like Nick Drake, but I always forget about him. Pretty songs but too slow for me.

Slow but ok

Heavy jazz influence Strange vocals Meh/10

I mean it’s Nick Drake so it’s good. But it’s sad Nick Drake. I like Pink Moon better.

Fine, folky...

Average

Very soft. Lots of guitar. Pleasant

Interesante e inovado

Great arrangements/strings. Not huge variation in the vocals and songwriting though.

A little depressing but uplifting at the same time? This is a soft spoken album that's a bit of a mood. It's solid, doubt I'm seeking this out again but I get why people enjoy.

Good stuff

Nice calming songs

Folk acústico interessante.

Mellow. Chill

First song was so good I was immediately thinking this will be another hidden gem. Bud sadly that just didn't happen. It felt rather stale after a while and the vocals seemed disconnected from the instrumentals.

Listened to Pink Moon a bit ago and rly enjoyed it, Five Leaves Left was pretty good too, a lot more instrumentally speaking, songwriting still on point

Super soothing voice, songwriting is good

Un poco rollo. 3

Calm and soothing, 3

It's ok

Great guitar work, bluesy and jazzy basslines on upright bass, great voice and lyrics. Nick Drake is a great singer songwriter

Slow and steady. Clear sound. Good vocal.

Meh. Good songwriter but not my cup of tea. Sorry Pitchfork folk. Best song: River Man

It has some ok songs but generally a bit too melancholic and a bit lack of.. everything. Some pretty songs. By far not as good as Bryter Later, doesn't even come close.

Bit Samey same, but this pretty smooth and nice

Beautiful sounds. Great voice, and nice songs. Maybe a little monotonous in the sense that many songs seem to have similar cadence and lyric melody. But a remarkable first album from a young singer-songwriter.

I liked this but it was sad.

Pretty good. Very laid back, nice instrumentation, interesting chord changes. Something I would put on for mixed company, but probably not listen to a lot on my own.

Best Song: ' Cello Song. The bongos (?) added a nice element to the soft, almost sultry aspect to his voice. Worst Song: Way to Blue. Seems like the introduction to a theatre production, rather than the fourth song into an album. Overall: It was raining while I listened to this album, which I think significantly helped its appreciation. A mildly melancholic feel with a talented but muted vocal performance. The album feels candlelit. Good for quiet dinners and being sort of sad.

Lilting melancholic guitar based folk. Inoffensive

Had this for a while, love the killer track - not really listened to the rest of it. Good without being great

Beautiful music but too sad for my personal taste

It's not a challenging listen by any stretch, I enjoyed it.

Decent

very relaxing, amazing instrumentals. Need to give more attention to eventually

Solid singer-songwriter album with enough melodic and arrangement twists to keep you listening. Never going to be the biggest fan of his 'hushed me' vocals though.

thought i'd enjoy it more, but certainly great music that i've never heard before

Nick Drake vaatii mulla sellaisen raukean sunnuntai-fiiliksen, muuten jää vähän tylsäksi. Kivoja lyriikoita ja tunnelmaa anyway.

Varsin nautinnollista folkkia. 3.5/5, voi noustakin.

Sedate

good vibe didnt catch me though, can see the influences

There's something about his voice that I just can't put into the proper words--a mysterious smoothness, a complete lack of vibrato without sacrificing melody, singing from the back of his throat but not from the lungs, so that the vocals are immediate and profound without being overbearing. For a depressed man, Drake didn't make depressing music. Soft, nuanced, beautiful yes, but not depressing. It is quite introspective, though, like a man looking at things and saying everything by saying as little as possible. This definitely is less-is-more music.

Got a nice feel to it but definitely too "samey" for me. Would 100% put this on in the background on a rainy day and gaze out the window. 3.5 stars

Melancholy but good. Not as good as Pink Moon.

Intricate guitar work and soft signing - proto- Jack Johnson

I don't know who first came up with the line about death being a good career move, but Nick Drake is a good illustration of the principle; I'm not sure he would've had the later re-evaluation his work has enjoyed had he not checked out of existence in 1974. FLL is nice. I like it more these days than I did when I first heard it. I don't care about it particularly.

I didn't think I was going to like this album, but I did somehow. The strings and flutes with that strong voice are kind of mesmerizing.

A very pleasant listen.

Sad to say that I wasn't the biggest fan of this one. The acoustic guitar playing was excellent though. The album itself is only about 41 minutes, but every song felt like it went on too long. I also think Nick Drake's voice probably should've been louder. It wasn't bad, I just found it a little underwhelming.

pretty

Phenomenal guitar playing, soothing songs

Hi- Day Is Done, Thoughts of Mary Jane, Man In A Shed Folk singer-songwriters as a genre has always baffled me, because they're all different, yet somehow all sound so similar and, to an effect, timeless. Certainly, Five Leaves Left feels similar to singer-songwriters like Jim Croce, Bob Denver, earlier Paul Simon, or even the Buckleys. It's very pleasant and the instrumentation is meticulous and well-crafted.

Pretty chill but less interesting than the Nick Drake I'd heard before. Quite straightforward folk-pop.

Just not my kind of thing.

A pleasant listen

I'm undecided on this one. The melodies are nice, but the nonsense lyrics somewhat ruin the songs.

Fairly enjoyable, nice background music, calming and whatnot.

not a fan

more like a 3.5, very pretty but not my favorite!

Better than I feared?

Too soft maybe, Cat Stevens like

First time I listened to this album. He is a gifted song-writer and it made me want to listen to his other two. Another one gone too early.

Good relaxing background music.

This is sooo easy to listen to. I love it for working, for needing a cozy listen, or a soft background sound.

Music for 20 year old boys who read New Yorker-approved short story collections on public transportation, and the 17 pick-me manic pixie dream girls who are young enough to still be enamored by them. As music – arrangements and guitar-work – I admire/respect this record. As poetry, I think, even in my late-20s, I’m much too old for this to hook me. Especially since I’ve always hated the indie Elliot Smiths/Belles and Sebastians this has gone on to inspire. Maybe if revisit this at 70, I’d find youthful longing to admire in it, but right now, I just find it a bit too self-involved to be impressed, even though I’d love to play like Drake.

I like the blend on his voice in Time Has Told Me. River Man is a lot more of his second album sound, which was so damn depressing. I am a little sad about not being able to give this album a totally blank slate as work kept getting in the way. The guys has guitar chops, its just I am not into sad wistful rock.

Sad boi music. It's pretty good. 6-7/10

Rating: 5/10

I dig it. Super mellow, but this guy uses a lot of dissonance, and it's neat.

Smooth Americana with country undertones. Feels like James Taylor or Cat Stevens.

Very good, but slow and you have to be in the mood

Not bad. Chill acoustic. Many songs sound the same and a little plain.

This was a surprise. Nick Drake managed to avoid nearly every folk cliche that I hate on this album. Somber, introspective, and beautiful...it's a shame he wasn't more popular in his day, because there are some real gems on this album.

This album make me want to put on a sweater and have a cup of chamomile tea.

Pleasant but a bit dull.

Tea drinkin' music.

It sounded good but nothing in particular stood out. Could use another listen.

It is fine.

Nice, quite calming and introspective. I prefer Nick Drake is small doses though, just find that I wallow in it after a while.

I like Nick Drake, but this is not my fav album. Time has Told me is a great song, but the rest did not measure up to it for me.

Peaceful. I like Drake's voice. Pleasant enough, I like the string sections. Didn't have a big impact on me. Favorite tracks: "River Man", "Saturday Sun"

I like this Nick Cave fellow he writes sad songs with good melodies.

Pretty and unique sound. Kind of repetitive though.

Songs are pretty but the classical arrangements are a bit excessive (and even overpower Drake's vocals). But sometimes the instrumentals are creative and interesting as in "Three Hours." They become more refined in his second album. His vocals are ok, but again they don't shine until his minimalistic approach in Pink Moon. Album is altogether not very coherent (each track has a different style often by different personnel), but has some great moments here and there. The track "River Man" is an absolute masterpiece. Other highlights are "Time Has Told Me" and "Saturday Sun."

August 4, 2021 (but I listened to most of this Aug 11) This was OK but a little too sad/slow for my taste.

Pretty gentle stuff, could probably use more diversity of sound

This was a good calm album that had a really nice indie feel to it even though it came out long before that scene exploded. I enjoyed it.

Enjoyable album. A little repetitive but overall a very solid record

not bad

Beautiful, melancholic songs. Very nice but too completely lacking in energy for me.

Lovely sound with impressive guitar work and supporting instrumentals including piano bongos and maracas. Didn’t love the vocal style but appreciated the thoughtful lyrics

3.5 if I could

not bad, but meh

Hadn’t heard of Nick Drake prior to this but I wish I had. ‘Time Has Told Me’ is a beautifully somber song. Will definitely be listening to more of his stuff beyond this album. ‘Three Hours’ has some lovely acoustic guitar.

New to me. Really good intricate folk music.

Sounds pleasant enough, but really not very interesting. Actually a 2.5

Sorry, but the best Nick Drake album is the best of Nick Drake (Way to Blue).

Nice melodies but quite repetitive.

its kimda meh not my type of album

So calming and charming music, which I just need to respect. However it didn't hit my emotional string.

3/5 soothing okayish music, but nothing exceptional

Pleasant enough***

Interestingly, Spotify sent me the Andy Bey version of "River Man" from this album last week and when I played it, Sue said "oh, Nick Drake." It is a great song. He can make you feel sad, the way he hits certain notes, but he uses the same technique on many songs and it becomes less interesting. I liked the addition of strings on some tracks.

Background music. A lot better than previous album.

Un poco rollo

Very pretty album

Me gustaron " Three Hours" y "'Cello Song". 7/10

enjoyable. don't know if I needed to listen to it before I die

No está malisimo.

Nice but boring

I thought Pink Moon was the good album.

Pretty good, but maybe a little boring

Slower than I remembered...moments of brilliance buy not in the mood for a full listen

he has a beautiful and calm voice and is a classic folk revivalist so his lyrics are very compelling, but overall it wasn't anything special

melibi vibes

Dave Mathews copied this guy’s sound

Hadn't heard this one before. Not a huge Drake fan, but I can dig it. The vocals on the remaster are not good. Lots of clipping, which is annoying with headphones.

Definitely a ‘60s vibe. Really mellow, although I didn’t recognize any songs.

Very one-note. Nice background/chill music. Nothing revolutionary.

Last song a banger

Sounds like a Wes Anderson movie

Folk as folk can be. A bit slow and need to be in the mood for it. Needs another listen with attention paid to lyrics and arrangement.

boring

This album was a pretty interesting folk album. Day is gone has a stairway to heaven sound to it. I also liked the song fruit tree.

sad , slow, chill , i already got a lot of sadness dont need more

Some nice songs but a bit slow for me

Good! but not on the same level as pink moon.

Nothing much to note.

Calming

Too melancholy and dour. I did not enjoy this album.

I liked Pink Moon better but this was still fine.

Has Simon & Garfunkel vibes, but far inferior songwriting and much more repetitive. Didn’t do it for me

2/5 While the music is nice and easy to listen too, I'm not the biggest fan of his voice unfortunately so I didnt enjoy this album as much as I'd hoped I would.

I think maybe I am missing something about this guy since this is the third album on this list and he only made it to like 30yo. I think if I was 16, listening to this in my room, really, truly taking in the songwriting and lyrics I would appreciate it more than I do today. It's not bad but I don't need to listen again.

Sleepy. By that, I mean dreamy, and also lacking engagement. It's an interesting duality. Fairly eclectic instrumentation as well. I came close to shutting this down when I heard lap steel on the first track, but fortunately that wasn't a mainstay on this release. I will probably forget I listened to this, so it has failed to leave an impression and thus doesn't qualify as must-hear.

it was alright! i liked the acoustic but no songs really stood out to me! the sound blended together 2.5

This album is like getting home from your friends funeral and still having a couple of hours left in the day before it is time to go to bed. You don't really want to do anything because the focus of the day should be your recently dceased friend, but also you do need to do something to pass the time until you can sleep.

Wasn't a fan.

It's chill. 2.5.

Echt uitzitten dit

This was just fine to me. I can listen to it and appreciate it and don’t really feel too strongly one way or the other. That lands me at a 2.

Bastante tranquilo

Not my kind of music, not bad though

Too slow for my taste

Kinda boring but not terrible

Little bit country, little bit Bob Dylan sound.

Not my style but I appreciate it

Somber and melancholy. Favorite track: River Man

Dynamics?

3 Nick Drakes in the last 10 albums. I’ll leave it close to the same as my other reviews but I admittedly warmed up a little to him. Still not my daily jam but I respect it.

Just kinda boring. After the album was over it switched to another artist without me knowing. I thought, "whoa, finally something interesting." And then I realized it wasn't Nick Drake anymore.

meh 2/5

i couldn’t tell where one song started and another ended. daniel restarted one to hear the intro again and i winced at the thought of listening to this for an extra 30 seconds. but maybe the problem wasn’t the album… maybe the problem was sitting in stand still traffic. we will never know, because i refuse to give it a second chance. sorry nick drake - if that’s even your real name.

Nick Drake is just not for me. Maybe, possibly, somewhere in my life I will be in the right mood for it, but not yet. I find this album boring, repetitive, not catchy, not interesting, and lacking in much variation. 2 starts just because I appreciate the effort that went into all of the instrumentation and songwriting.

+1 for some good use of strings, otherwise utterly forgettable

I can’t seem to get into Nick Drake. I’ve tried before, but long enough ago that I couldn’t remember why. I was actually jazzed that this record popped up, cause I figured I just needed some focused time with this record to see what everyone else seems to see with this guy. I like the guitars on the record, and can get into the subject matter he’s singing about, but I’ve also now remembered why I’ve struggled to connect with Nick Drake: every song on this record bores me to tears. What a slog. 5/10

I've tri s Nick Drake before, and not felt the magic. It sounds super washed out and distant, and so it feels too.

Nice vibes, but nothing was that memorable

Meh 2/5

Never heard of album or singer. Right off the bat I kind of hate his voice. How is there another random Irish folk album on this list. The songwriting is pretty good. Just an average first song. Again good writing on river man. I like the production on this one a lot too. I just hate his voice. Love the opening to three hours. Really cool bongos and guitar. This is a good song. Just keeps strumming along too I love that. Voice comes in way too clear on way to blue. Hate it. Cool strings on this one tho. I actually like day is done a lot. The songwriting is just so good. Cello song is really really cool too. Cello slaps. So cool how the cello riff serves as the chorus. Really good songwriting again in this one. Thoughts of Mary is too slow and too vocal focused for me. Not a fan. Really good piano on man in a shed. Rest of it is eh. Cool guitar riff on fruit tree. Again rest of it is eh. I just can’t get over his voice. Saturday sun is just ok. Good piano again. Pretty good songwriting. That’s the theme of the album. It was t terrible but it was great either. JAA. 2.4 stars.

I enjoyed this album more than the last and the opening few songs certainly gave me a renewed hope for Nick Drake. However, I found the album began to turn rather monotonous and fizzled out somewhat through the middle and towards the end.

Nice folly feel but way too slow for me. Looks like I already had Saturday Sun liked (for my days of the week playlist)

Nick Drake has a timeless sound. This album, which came out nearly 60 years ago, sounds like it could be a new release today.

Pink Moon wasn't bad, but not something I would listen to. This is worse.

It's not bad, but I really can't tell one song from the next. There's some good music in there, but it's such a slog that I can't tell you anything about the second side, and I just finished it.

Not a fan. More than one Nick Drake songs is too much. He has such a unique sound and voice but too much of a good thing is rough. Loved the first song and Man in the Shed.

you know that scene in BTTF when Huey Lewis says that the Pinheads are just too darn loud? That's how I feel about this, but too darn soft and sad. Not it for me. Bob dylan stinks.

meeeh!

Found it a bit boring

Not my cup of tea, but recognise that it’s a good album

This was forgettable to me. The musical arrangements and different instruments were nice. Can't say I'd ever seek this back out.

Once again I find very little enjoyment from these tedious sparse arrangements that highlight his extremely dull and joyless voice. Wasn't as bad as Pink Moon but still an album I can safely say I will never listen to again.

Notable Textzeile: Fame is but a fruit tree So very unsound It can never flourish ‘Til its stock is in the ground Fruuuuuuit treeee, was für ein langweiliges Leiden.

Kind of boring. Nothing I haven't heard from the other folk albums on this list. Favorite Track: Way To Blue

Totally non offensive

Honestly unremarkable, I've never gotten why people love Nick Drake

old slop again yay

Sounded good to start with but it became a lot of the same thing for my liking.

I went back & listened to Brytler Later thinking “What does this have that I like that today’s album doesn’t?” It’s remarkable what a stark difference there is. From the jump that album is far more rich, complex, dynamic & Five Leaves Left is bare, raw & boring.

I think we’ve had other Nick Drake albums, that’s the impact this had on me. Better than Dylan and Cohen still.

This was depressing, but again, somehow less depressing than Nick Drake's tragic life.

Appreciate the artistry to some degree, but this was so boring…

Aburridísimo. Música para funeral.

Okay but not my thing.

Time Has Told Me

Sweet guitar noises. I like nick drake but didnt love this album. Fav song: Saturday Sun
