Pretty gentle stuff, could probably use more diversity of sound

This was a good calm album that had a really nice indie feel to it even though it came out long before that scene exploded. I enjoyed it.

Hadn’t heard of Nick Drake prior to this but I wish I had. ‘Time Has Told Me’ is a beautifully somber song. Will definitely be listening to more of his stuff beyond this album. ‘Three Hours’ has some lovely acoustic guitar.

Interestingly, Spotify sent me the Andy Bey version of "River Man" from this album last week and when I played it, Sue said "oh, Nick Drake." It is a great song. He can make you feel sad, the way he hits certain notes, but he uses the same technique on many songs and it becomes less interesting. I liked the addition of strings on some tracks.

Background music. A lot better than previous album.

Hadn't heard this one before. Not a huge Drake fan, but I can dig it. The vocals on the remaster are not good. Lots of clipping, which is annoying with headphones.

Definitely a ‘60s vibe. Really mellow, although I didn’t recognize any songs.

Don’t know that I needed to listen to multiple Nick Drake albums. This one was ok but not as good as Bryter Layter or Pink Moon.

A van Gogh like artist. Made famous in the afterlife. I get it. I get why people attach to artists like this. The vulnerability these types of artists put out in their music is what attracts them. Add in a questionable death & Fascination follows. Pleasantly dull. Reminds me of Norah Jones. 2

I was just bored by this. I think after hearing two Nick Drake albums, I can officially say I'm not a fan.

Pretty chill album, but it's also quite old at this point. There are little bits here and there that are somewhat exciting, like how Day Is Gone was quite alright, but it's nice having it in the background.

2/5 While the music is nice and easy to listen too, I'm not the biggest fan of his voice unfortunately so I didnt enjoy this album as much as I'd hoped I would.

I think maybe I am missing something about this guy since this is the third album on this list and he only made it to like 30yo. I think if I was 16, listening to this in my room, really, truly taking in the songwriting and lyrics I would appreciate it more than I do today. It's not bad but I don't need to listen again.

Sleepy. By that, I mean dreamy, and also lacking engagement. It's an interesting duality. Fairly eclectic instrumentation as well. I came close to shutting this down when I heard lap steel on the first track, but fortunately that wasn't a mainstay on this release. I will probably forget I listened to this, so it has failed to leave an impression and thus doesn't qualify as must-hear.

This album is like getting home from your friends funeral and still having a couple of hours left in the day before it is time to go to bed. You don't really want to do anything because the focus of the day should be your recently dceased friend, but also you do need to do something to pass the time until you can sleep.

Just kinda boring. After the album was over it switched to another artist without me knowing. I thought, "whoa, finally something interesting." And then I realized it wasn't Nick Drake anymore.

i couldn’t tell where one song started and another ended. daniel restarted one to hear the intro again and i winced at the thought of listening to this for an extra 30 seconds. but maybe the problem wasn’t the album… maybe the problem was sitting in stand still traffic. we will never know, because i refuse to give it a second chance. sorry nick drake - if that’s even your real name.

Nick Drake is just not for me. Maybe, possibly, somewhere in my life I will be in the right mood for it, but not yet. I find this album boring, repetitive, not catchy, not interesting, and lacking in much variation. 2 starts just because I appreciate the effort that went into all of the instrumentation and songwriting.

I can’t seem to get into Nick Drake. I’ve tried before, but long enough ago that I couldn’t remember why. I was actually jazzed that this record popped up, cause I figured I just needed some focused time with this record to see what everyone else seems to see with this guy. I like the guitars on the record, and can get into the subject matter he’s singing about, but I’ve also now remembered why I’ve struggled to connect with Nick Drake: every song on this record bores me to tears. What a slog. 5/10

Never heard of album or singer. Right off the bat I kind of hate his voice. How is there another random Irish folk album on this list. The songwriting is pretty good. Just an average first song. Again good writing on river man. I like the production on this one a lot too. I just hate his voice. Love the opening to three hours. Really cool bongos and guitar. This is a good song. Just keeps strumming along too I love that. Voice comes in way too clear on way to blue. Hate it. Cool strings on this one tho. I actually like day is done a lot. The songwriting is just so good. Cello song is really really cool too. Cello slaps. So cool how the cello riff serves as the chorus. Really good songwriting again in this one. Thoughts of Mary is too slow and too vocal focused for me. Not a fan. Really good piano on man in a shed. Rest of it is eh. Cool guitar riff on fruit tree. Again rest of it is eh. I just can’t get over his voice. Saturday sun is just ok. Good piano again. Pretty good songwriting. That’s the theme of the album. It was t terrible but it was great either. JAA. 2.4 stars.

I enjoyed this album more than the last and the opening few songs certainly gave me a renewed hope for Nick Drake. However, I found the album began to turn rather monotonous and fizzled out somewhat through the middle and towards the end.

Nick Drake has a timeless sound. This album, which came out nearly 60 years ago, sounds like it could be a new release today.

Pink Moon wasn't bad, but not something I would listen to. This is worse.

It's not bad, but I really can't tell one song from the next. There's some good music in there, but it's such a slog that I can't tell you anything about the second side, and I just finished it.

This was forgettable to me. The musical arrangements and different instruments were nice. Can't say I'd ever seek this back out.

Once again I find very little enjoyment from these tedious sparse arrangements that highlight his extremely dull and joyless voice. Wasn't as bad as Pink Moon but still an album I can safely say I will never listen to again.

Vielleicht liegt es an mir, ich möchte das nicht ausschließen, aber wenn Adele gestern nur 1,5 bekommen hat, dann das hier erst recht.

I went back & listened to Brytler Later thinking “What does this have that I like that today’s album doesn’t?” It’s remarkable what a stark difference there is. From the jump that album is far more rich, complex, dynamic & Five Leaves Left is bare, raw & boring.

I think we’ve had other Nick Drake albums, that’s the impact this had on me. Better than Dylan and Cohen still.

I always thought Nick Drake was an emo artist from the 80s/90s who killes himself with a knife, but I guess I was mixing things up. Pleasantly surprised by the songs, although they sometimes have that 60s "kitsch folk" vibe where you could picture him singing about fairytales amd stuff. Plus a bit boring.

I may have been depressed when I started to listen to today’s selection, but by the end of the album any doctor would have written me a prescription for medication. This album is the perfect backdrop for sitting alone in a room, glass half-filled with bourbon, and the lights seemingly turned off. Otherwise I don’t see another use for it. Nick Drake is inarguably a talented musician, he just didn’t use those talents correctly on this album in my opinion.

Man, I really did not love this! I like Pink Moon, i love britfolk, and I can hear how much Belle & Sebastian was influenced by this, but it just doesn't work for me. So much of it is maudlin and treacly! Nick's voice is great but the the arrangements are weird and don't seem fully developed. He sure got a lot better over the next 3 years! Top track: 'Cello Song

Just like with our friend Leonard Cohen, listening to more than 1 album is kind of enough, and though I did like the first two albums of Nick Drake, this third one broke this camel’s back… I am starting to fear for my sanity the further I am progressing on this 1001 list… oh well, around 400 albums to go… Sorry Nick, only 2* this time...

Really, really boring

Feck naww. I so do dislike country and folk. Mr. Drake did however do interesting things with his guitar, there was a lot of little variation going on in the background with acoustic bass and percussions, it did feel like it was leaning in to jazzy sort of terrain and I often forgot what I was listening. Which is a good thing, because I don't like a lot of folk music.

Nice as background music - but not compelling enough for me to pay attention.

This album sounds gloomy, but it isn't dark. This captures when the sun warmly lay on your face during the afternoon. When you just woken up from sleep and eager to play with your friends. Like you don't have a clue that this fun will eventually end. For me, the instruments sounds fine, though I feel most of it are quite repetitive, with mostly the rhythms is the only one changing, with some few add-ons of different percussion or cello. The lyrics are lovely though. I just wish he would do more style to the way he is singing. His voice is not bad, just too alike throughout the album, in a way. Probala sam iz više puta da slušam neke pjesme prateći tekst, ali me i tekst deprimirao. Pročitala sam posle da je Nick Drake umro u 26-oj godini života i da je imao depresiju. To se baš odražava na njegov stil pjevanja i muziku generalno, tako da opet ja jesam fan folk muzike, sporijih pjesama, balada, ali previše mi je ovaj album deprimirajući. Vidjela sam, takoðe, da je glumac koji glumi Stevea u Stranger things seriji rekao da mu je Pink moon album od Nick Drakea jedan od omiljenih, pa sam onda i njega poslušala ali džaba. Sve isto, monotono.

WOULD ESTROGEN HAVE SAVED NICK DRAKE!? as a professional in the field of transgendering, i'm inclined to say yes. a flamboyant depressed man with an album like this? yeah buddy. seen it a thousand times. drake has a nice soft voice and there's some decent instrumentation between the mellow guitar and the flute which offers decent lift to an otherwise depressing album that makes this at least listenable, but it's largely forgettable mumbling that bounced right off me. something i've said before with art is that i feel like a lot of dead artists (especially young ones) have their work boosted posthumously because people ascribe inherent meaning to the fact that they are dead which i find frustrating.

I dunno, feels kind of like a 1960s folk album where every song goes on about twice as long as it needs to. I enjoy the strings quite a bit but they can only do so much to hold up the album. Honestly just don't think its for me considering what other people seem to think of it has such a mismatch to my own listening experience.

I believe this is the second Nick Drake album on this list. The first time I didn't care for his vocal style, didn't much like his writing, and found the music uninteresting, otber than a couple spots that suddenly sounded like Bruce Cockburn.

Nick Drake for me is the CLASSIC example of critics thinking they know music better than everyone else. Everyone who buys music is a critic and the REAL critics obviously say it is not that good since no one was buying his albums. Super boring. His voice lulls me to sleep. I can't understand his lyrics. The music sounds like improv in his basement. This was rough.

Each song sounded the same and only 2 songs stood out as listenable. On Wikipedia, he put out this album at 21 which is impressive and his guitar playing is outstanding. Died when he was 26. Not something I’d download or listen to again. However, there are worse albums out there to me, so it’ll receive a 2

Didn't have a clue what to expect with this one. For a release from 1969 this has aged real well. Easy voice to listen to, like a better version of Jack Johnson. The songwriting is nice, very chill, slower. For most popular music of the time, this is certainly a bit different imo. At least when it comes to radio hits across different genres. Wonder why this is something I'd never heard before as I enjoy a lot of music from this era.

Yep, can confirm, this is a Nick Drake album. Some people really like this kind of music, but I’m not one of them. It’s too mellow and relaxed. I struggle to derive much enjoyment from it. It’s definitely not bad, and the fact that it’s chamber music certainly helps it feel less sparse, but this is still just not for me. 5/10

My second Nick Drake album, after Pink Moon. Same thoughts, mostly dull background noise. He seems like a male Lana Del Rey. Or, well, since he's from the '60s, I guess that would make Lana Del Rey a female Nick Drake? This album was a little better than the first one. Even though his voice is still sleep inducing, some of the songs had nice music. Three Hours, Day Is Done, Cello Song, and Man In A Shed are good examples of that. Best Song: Day Is Done

Some nice guitar and string arrangements. This doesn’t really do anything for me though. I don’t love the vocals (bland, depressing), lyrics (vague, whimsical), or song structures (rambling, lacking resolution). I’m in a pretty good spot these days but I could see enjoying this more if I was depressed. That’s a no from me, dog.

This is my second Nick Drake album on the list. I couldn’t get into Pink Moon, and this is no different. There’s clear talent, and I like this album more musically. But I find myself rather bored, even when actively reading the lyrics. As others have stated, it “should” be a perfect Sunday morning record (and today is indeed Sunday), but it’s just too slow and repetitive for me. I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it. Addendum-I wrote all of that prior to the album ending. I really like Saturday Sun a lot. Not sure what that will do for the overall rating.

It didn't really click to me the whole time listening, I doubt this is the sorta music for me - since i don't really "hear lyrics" and instead pay attention to melody i found this a bit of a boring album but i'm sure it's got proper value to it throughout the world

Just okay. You'd really have to be in a specific mood to play this album. Maybe if you are having a hard time sleeping.

Drake could play the acoustic, no doubt about it. I'd gladly steal many snippets of his music. However, this is probably the most boring album I've heard through this challenge. It was so boring that I almost DNFed it. 1.5/5

This is not something I would normally listen too. I wish it had _why_ it was one of the 1001 albums you must here. Was this original at the time? Something new? The songs are good, but just too light and mellow for my taste.

Eughh, I appreciate there is good musicianship here and I know it's all a sad story but this was hard work and too melancholic for me.

The acoustic guitar and tone is nice at first, but gets old. It’s all kind of the same. Definitely a time and place for this type of sound.

Boring album. After a couple of songs you’ve already hear everything. Strings sound phenomenal though in this album. Good lyrics and songwriting, but his voice and style becomes too repetitive.

Didnt go into this one with high expectations - i'm usually not a fan of folk albums. But this was a nice surprise. Beautiful melodies, thoughtful lyrics and storytelling.

Nick Drake does a very folky bluey soft rock with largely nice intricate instrumental work. It’s not the type of mood I seek too often

Nothing burger of music. Forgotten the moment it ended. Maybe if I was a native English speaker I would appreciate it more.

This was a pretty okay album. I thought a lot of the instrumental was pretty and added to each song. I just cant get behind the vocals... They felt dragging and relatively monotone.

I’ve been told how great Nick Drake is by many people. I don’t hear it. Mediocre “poor me” tunes.

Much like the global review...can't say much about "Five Leaves Left." Another sleepy, softy. I don't think Drake deserves the list let alone twice. Did this guy have a huge impact on the music world at the time? Is it because he suffered from severe depression and overdosed at age 26? It's not bad music, but like "Bryter Layter," it's just not for me...1.63 stars.

Would have been 2.5 if I could, relaxing but nothing I would listen to again.

I already had Bryter Layter on this list and I loved it. But this album was just too slow and nothing about it really grabbed me

I really wanted to like this album because Nick Drake has such a great reputation but I am ashamed to admit I found myself pretty bored for the majority of this album.

British Dylan? plenty strings. 2nd track sounds entirely different vocally? different singer altogether? no clue. some orchestral ambience quite different than track 1. too many tracks already bored. well now i'm familiar with this artists' story and i'm depressed, thanks. track 3 has some percussive element barely audible. weird. depressing and kinda mid. do I have to listen to the entire thing?

I appreciate his poetry, but this barely qualifies as music. It's a nice lullaby I suppose. Favorite Track: "Three Hours".

It's inoffensive and you can put it on in the background if you want people to think you're sophisticated.
