Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Eh sad post 9-11 beck
Beck's music actively annoys me. Why? I don't exactly know. There's something about his melodic choices that needle me until I break. Is it that he doesn't resolve melodies and progressions where I expect them to go? What could it be? Does it matter? On the surface, there's nothing about this album that deserves criticism. It sounds nice, it's got a soothing vibe. I can't stand it.
Lovely strings, lush acoustic guitars, hints of Nick Drake, Moby Grape, but none of it feels heartfelt. It all feels like a pastiche.
Bit typical of the early Coldplay era in music.
oof 2/5. Just not that into Beck
Full disclosure….not a beck fan. No Hipster beck, no catchy radio song beck, and definitely no sad beck. No turntables and no microphones! Appreciate the music and arrangements in parts, but just not for me.
Not for me
2 - not necessarily bad bad but was a bit boring
Didn't hate it but its a one and done.
I’m always in favor of growth, trying something you haven’t done before. So I’m not complaining that this is different than what I expect from Beck. It’s just that I did not get into this one.
2.5
Liking the lush instrumentation, but I’m not a fan of breakup albums.
2 out of 5. Having heard some of his other songs I wasn't expecting this album to be slower.
Boring
Monotonic, lifeless, empty. Nothing to write home about. 3/10
Didn’t really care for it. He played instruments and sang so it’s better than the electronica the day before.
The album title makes sense, because this is a pretty dramatic departure from the sound that I think most people associate with Beck. The upside to this is that there's no cringy rapping, but the downside is that it's kind of a boring and unremarkable indie rock album. It's not a bad album, but it... kind of lacks any defining feature. While listening to it I thought it might've been released well after 2002, so I guess he gets credit for that. It's fine. I don't remember a single song from this album. Meh.
vai mulher reage bota um cropped
im sorry but i think this is a snooze fest. he’s done so much more interesting, fun stuff. a few good songs but mostly just no thanks
Dull
There’s never a good time for anyone over the age of 25 to do a flip. Nobody wants to see an adult show off. Sometimes I listen to an album and it feels like showing off. The artist writes some poignant songs and brings in some stringed instruments and slows everything down, carefully choosing each arrangement. And it's objectively good, but not what I showed up for. Sea Change feels like a cloying attempt to be taken seriously. I would argue that it takes just as much talent to write Loser, for example, which is literally just a random string of words that have no meaning. Maybe I'm just a heartless asshole who has never broken up with somebody that I truly loved. Yea, that's probably it. The Beastie Boys made a similar move with Check Your Head (ditching samples for instruments) and I love it. I guess I just don't like sentimental music that much.
boring
Muuuy poquito. Es género 'canción', tranqui, pero nada memorable.
2.75
Competent but boring. Generous 2
I really like Beck, but never cared for this album. Good for him for having an emotional outlet for a rough time and I also applaud the artistic growth. However, after a couple songs this album just sounds all the same to me. I like a song every now and then, but can’t do a whole album of this. I own this album and have only listened to the whole thing a couple times. Pretty much any of his other albums would be getting high marks from me, but not this one. Sorry, Beck.
It's just alright. I don't know, the vocals are just lameish and i've heard a bunch of this sorta music so much other places. the production and vibes are nice tho fav: the golden age
Didn't care for it at all. Couldn't get into the message or theme and it just all blended together
Break up albums are rarely a good idea. Taking the emotional laundry of a ten year relationship and airing it in public isn’t going to end well for anyone involved. Listening to it feels uncomfortably intrusive and the music is very much of the 2002 sub Coldplay genre. Honestly mate, just get over it.
I never got why Beck is so popular. He did a couple of good songs, but apart from that... This is a pretty boring pop rock album, nothing stands out, nothing is enjoyable here.
Beck still just does nothing for me.
It’s not bad but it’s not great in any aspect. Its not that I don’t like folk music or slow singer songwriters but my ranking of Joan baez john cash (this one I come to regret ) albums as 2 was the same criticism here It’s way too monotone for 52 minutes without being distinctly great in any aspect I think beck is also a tier below Joan baez and johnny cash and Leonard cohen for me so vocally but the guitar is beautiful in just enough places To avoid a 1 here
a mimir
Had a hard time focusing with this one. Some beautiful moments though. I know people LOVE this artist but I never got the bug and this album didn't do it for me either. Also the first track from 'Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime' auto played after this and I liked it so much more 😬 Favorite tracks: - Lost Cause
Pufff que duro
Wow, Beck sounds pretty depressed. Interesting orchestral use of strings. Seems like a good album to listen to after a breakup.
This.... album... makes.... me.... sleepy..... zzzzzzz
I don't think it was bad, but it was also not engaging enough for me to have strong feelings about it
16/1001 Besides the two first songs, this albums really doesn’t do anything. From start to finish it’s just a boring listen with a mix of different genres and influences. Not much to really say about this one 2/5
Somber and boring.
I like Beck, but his later stuff has never really landed with me. This one is fine, just a little too bland for my taste.
This album is super chill. I was already tired and it was very soothing.
New to me. Fine, but kinda boring?
Not for me
This slowly, slowly waddled so that Morning Phase could beautifully prance in the forest. Hate giving this a 2, but I LOVE Odelay and also really enjoy Morning Phase, so there’s that, I guess??
I think that Beck is not my vibe, I found it boring
Not much to see here.
Given this is his heartbreak album I feel a bit mean saying I found it really dull. It has that naughties onwards super tasteful production sound that's unobtrusive enough to soundtrack a million dinner parties. His singing style in this doesn't help either. It is so blank. It is difficult to know if that's an aesthetic choice or meds but it tops up the blandness to the brim.
Familiar with one or two. Doesn’t stand out.
Not the best
Listened to this while doing something. Nothing particularly caught my ears but it was nice and easy listening
Very low-key music, sometimes sounds a little country and I heard what reminded me a lot of Pink Floyd at times. This seems like a big departure from the sound of what I'd heard form Beck. As I listened to it I thought it sounds like it was written by someone who had a break up or divorce. I looked at Wikipedia and he had just broken up with his girlfriend before this. I have to give him credit for being a talented artist/song-writer, that does come through. I'm sure if I read through the lyrics I would find a lot of introspection. This album is good in it's own space, but I just found it boring.
Lord release me. This pity party was not expected nor is it welcome. It's a slow burn, but instead of a candle at the end of a wick, it's a noose.
Too long, got bored halfway through. I guess I don't like sad Beck.
I could see this album growing on me in the future, but it's pretty boring on first listen. Only a handful of tracks I'd say stuck with me.
A bit creepy, slow, and depressing, but not too bad. Unfortunately, the album was too long and the songs all started to sound the same.
Tylsä. Ei välttis huono mut tylsä.
THE GOLDEN AGE - 6.4/10 PAPER TIGER - 8.1/10 GUESS I'M DOING FINE 5.7/10 LONESOME TEARS - 7.4/10 LOST CAUSE - 6.6/10 END OF THE DAY- 6.1/10 IT'S ALL IN YOUR MIND - 6.7/10 ROUND THE BEND - 5.2/10 ALREADY DEAD - 6.2/10 SUNDAY SUN - 6.5/10 LITTLE ONE - 6.2/10 SIDE OF THE ROAD - 5.6/10
Nudne i żałosne 2/5
I don't remember honestly
Beck is an artist that has been on my list to listen to for a while. Three songs in I thought to myself- "man, this kind of sucks." I didn't really like any of this. Too mopey sad boy. 3.25/10 (1.75/5)
I'm not surprised Beck's girlfriend broke up with him if he is this depressing in his day-to-day life.
Sea Change by sad, mellow Beck showing his incredible range. I borrowed this CD from the A’dale library shortly after it was released. Not at all what I expected, but liked it a lot. (I think more back then than this time around). First three songs get the album off to a strong start, but it fades from there. Songs become similar and depressing. Good album to fall asleep by… L = (1.5*s) J = (2.6*s) Ave = (2.1*s)
I'm not a big fan of the (sea) change for Beck on this album...but only because it is so far removed from his norm which I love so much. The album is good for what its going for though...a broken hearted, ballad heavy epic. "Already Dead" was best track but I just wasn't sad enough at the time while listening. I do love that this Loser (baby) from the 90s can produce a raw, emotional album and blow critics away...Beck is just a music genius. Another album I would hope to never have to play again cause I'm up the junction. Better live at the Hollywood Bowl with full orchestra...solid 2.
For me Beck is the pop prankster who did lo-fi stuff like MTV Makes Me Want To Smock Crack (and Loser) and then cleaned up his sound and made weird electrofunk masterpieces like Sexx Laws. The Serious Singer Songwriter Beck never did it for me. This is particularly dull. And very long.
A monotonous break up album with many easy-on-ears ballads that'll sound good on a night drive. Didn't like Beck's nasal whiny vocals. Lyrically just meh. Nigel Godrich's production gives it a polished sound, hence listenable.
Rubbish. Didn't even notice it had stopped.
I like weird electronic Beck, not slow sleepy beck
This bored me. Too one note and too long. Clearly I prefer quirky Beck
not my vibe, but not bad
Not for me a bit boring and meh
Not the worst thing I’ve heard but I wouldn’t listen again
Bored
Rating: 4/10 Beck is such an eclectic artist and decides to make a very boring and one-dimensional album. Very disappointing.
Boring Beck- introspective but lacked soul.
Songs to go to sleep to.
Sounded a bit like one long song that didnt do very much for me. Liked his other albums more.
A more melancholy Beck than I'm used to. Some good here (with really no bad tracks), but definitely a lot of meh filler that could've been refined.
Usually love Beck, but this sounds like he's trying to sound like Eels, but falls short.
2.5 Not my vibe. I really wanted to like it. I think it's good background music for a Holiday Inn lobby maybe. Just too boring
Boring 2.5
Got half way thru this sad sack of crap album before I started to FF the melancholy. Not at all what I want from Beck.
It isn't one of the best albums, I've heard, but, it's an okay album.
The melancholic Beck is sometimes hard to swallow. Sometimes, when it's raining, it's Sunday, and we're inside and looking at the gloomy world, this album can grab you by the throat, But mostly I turn it off after 3 or 4 songs because it doesn't do anything. Not a lot of album do that
he lost his turntables :(
Weird
Not my favorite Beck Album -- pretty boring compared to Odelay or Mellow Gold. Just OK
Rock de cantautor. Me ha parecido un tostonazo. Un 2.
Found this all just a bit of a drone and depressing, not for me.
Beck makes sad songs about sad things, This is a very emotionally charged painful album, perhaps had I been at a different stage in my life id have resonated more. But as stands I found this a really difficult listen that I couldn’t finish, too many melancholy songs blended into one long continuous sad note. Paper tiger is also genuinely an awful song. Bland, long and sad.
Ain't no Jeff Beck that is for sure
I'm familiar with some earlier work from Beck... What the fuck happened here? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know the backstory, but seriously? How does a romantic break-up change an artist's music so drastically for the worse? This is a total bore. I can't stand "sad man with a guitar" music, and adding orchestral elements on top doesn't help me. Hopefully this guy got over it eventually.
2.5/5
HEIKKO NÄKYY ALBUM COVERISTA MYÖS..
Not a fan.
Maybe real Beckheads can get excited about this one, because I cannot. Does he always sing like this, or is this just really Chris Cornell inspired?
I don't think 1001 albums needs to include more than one Beck album. This one was meandering
A bit too samey and mellow for me this one. I much prefer his later work where he mixes in more upbeat tracks.
Was a bit boring but had a few songs i liked

#257. This album sucks. It's just boring, with nothing going for it. It's hard to pick a favorite song from this album because none of them are any good. But hey, at least this book is sticking with theme of finding an artist that has some good songs, and then picking an album that none of those songs are on. Why is there so much of that? 2/5: stupid
Lush arrangements but I’m not really into it
Enjoy most other stuff by Beck, but this was a bit boring and not as weird or interesting as the other stuff.
FAVO: Paper tiger, Lost Cause
such a bore!!!! i didnt like it, really, but i didnt hate it
I’m not a huge Beck fan
Ok
Not really my thing to be honest. Lost Cause the clear standout
A lot of moments of true beauty in the arrangements but I'm sorry but when it comes to heartbreak songs Beck's singing style just does not do it for me.
Sad post break up Beck album
Such classic jazzy deliciousness! Never knew this man exiseted and I’m so excited to have come across him.
A middle-of-the-road space-folk singer-songwriter record. Inoffensive, sometimes pretty, often uncompelling. The guitar and the strings sound great; Beck's vocal performances are pretty good when he's not doing a Gordon Lightfoot or Kurt Cobain impression. I'm not sure why this particular Beck album is here. Highlights: The Golden Age, Paper Tiger
Not bad, but I didn’t like it much. Peaceful sounds, I wasn’t lyric focused, some moments of ambient or rock out, but I’d pass
Dull
I'm not a fan of Beck. This album has some interesting production choices, especially with his use of strings throughout, but a lot of it is really slow. It isn't something I'm likely to revisit. 2/5
A pretty chill listen. Didn't love anything here, but it was well-made and was a pretty relaxing background-music type situation.
Like
Not quite Beck
If laying down in the fetal position and crying is your thing, well do I have an album for you! I actually like beck's first couple of albums but this one just feels really down and sad
ganz nett
this album sounded good but was so slow and lethargic that i was struggling to pay attention to it. the slurred vocals made me feel like i had accidentally hit "0.5x playback" on my app. Sunday Sun was the highlight for me.
I thought it was fine. Some nice sounds, but nothing grabbed me.
A bit like Beck, unplugged compared to his other albums.
Vond ik helemaal niks eerlijk gezegd. Echt zo saai en rustig
Non mi ha convinto
mi è rotolato via un coglione
Previously rated: Odelay (3/5) ********************** My brother, who is a Beck fan, was mocking me the other day for giving the Deee-Lite album a 4/5. I would listen to a fun album like that any day of the week over the dreary dreck of Sea Change. Maybe "dreck" is a bit too strong, but this album was dull, and I didn't really like any of the tracks.
Is Beck the same kid from Superbad? Superbad was funny. Was this album an attempt at humor or purposely slow and boring? It certainly wasn't funny but major props on the slow and boring part. Couldn't wait for this to end. Last couple albums have been brutal. I did make it through a second listen, but unfortunately it made me want to score this lower. I do not see any reason to revisit this album. 2
Bit too much Beck
The sound of crying into a PBR tall boy. Gorgeous production and there's moments where I almost get it, especially with the orchestration, but overall very much not for me.
Rock, s.s., 2002 -> 2
found it kinda dull and depressing but at least listenable. I’d give it 2.5 stars.
Hmm, didn't like it, the voice is nothing special and the songs aren't something I like in the moment
Ist mir deutlich zu melancholisch.
Surprisingly lousy and boring, even as background music. I like Beck, too, but this was a letdown.
This album shows Beck has range and the ability to sing ballads, but for me they are lacking direction. Most of the songs seem to get lost in the trippy background production, and separate you from the vocals. It could have been just as profound with him singing in front of simpler arrangements.
All the songs sound the same
Beck without any of the edge and/or whimsy. There are solid tracks on this LP ("Paper Tiger," "Lost Cause," "Already Dead") but the overall impression is: huge orchestration for sadsack songs that Beck sloughs together, singing as though he has a handful of loose change in his mouth. Ultimately the project's sin is that without anything clever (and everything dispairing) to say, nothing greatly catches the attention, and nothing lingers too long. Very dour.
Didn’t love it. Least favorite Beck album.
4 / 10 Muuuyyy aburrido.
Sea Change by Beck. Sad Beck is best Beck, sad Beck still bad beck.
Sad. A bit like Leonard Cohen, one octave higher.
Nah
Depressing
Beetje sad gepingel
eh
I don’t know any of these songs from Beck!
Why? Not funky. Pseudo symphoni
Meh
Um acústico inócuo.
Pretty slow and mellow. Couple songs that I thought were ok but this album is not for me. Geurro significantly better
This record is kinda pretty but mostly sad and boring. I generally dig sad, but not when it’s boring. “Paper Tigers” is a cool track, though. I believe that was the single.
I don’t get this one but I love other back tracks though!
Maybe I was in the right way today. Maybe I was expecting something different. I certainly wasn't expecting so many slow, introspective, and depressing songs.
Pretty mopey. Or occasionally pretty and completely mopey. The arrangement on "It's All In Your Mind" is a treat but the rest of the record is too moody for my taste.
Good rhythm, but somewhat boring after two or three songs
Boring Slow Depressing
I have not heard this album or artist before. It wasn’t a bad album, just didn’t really do anything for me. Most of the songs sounded similar so there was none that stood out to me. I feel like I could give this album another chance though.
Meh
Every song sounds the same. All downers.
Ok too ballady.
I'm not smart enough to know what good music is but I do know what makes me depressed when I listen to it.
music to fall asleep to lyrics might be good though, did not pay attention to it
I like Beck normally
Track 1: cool acoustic progression. Track 2: okay not my favorite song. Track 3: once again okay but not amazing. Track 4: cool string part to end it. Kinda like a day in the life. Track 5: meh Track 6: I like the instruments used Track 7: once again slow and okay Track 8: I like the tension in the beginning Track 9: again meh and okay Track 10: like the progression Track 11: once again it was okay Track 12: just like the rest of the album, some good acoustic moments but very slow. Overall: 4/10 very slow and honestly not my favorite. There’s some cool parts but it’s really not my favorite and nothing sticks out much. Kinda just a listen if I want background noise album.
I liked Beck’s earlier albums a lot. I bought this when it was released and was disappointed by its straightforwardness and slowness so didn’t listen to it much as an album. I like a few of the songs when they come up in a shuffle but most are still skips. Listening to it as an album again now - it’s still a chore.
So boring!
Going into this album, I was excited as I quite like Beck. However, my excitement quickly wained as this album is quite depressing.
Very good. the melodrama in the lyrics and tone work for me. Just too long
eh
This album is simply incontrovertible proof that Beck is not for me. I'm quite literally going through a breakup right now, and this album is still boring the life out of me. The only songs that moved me even a little bit were Lonesome Tears and Sunday Sun. Everything else felt like a stereotypical sad singer sitting on a stool.
Not the best from Beck but some bangers
Ehhh. Loser was great and probably untoppable. This doesn’t feel essential to me. Not awful. Not bad. Just not … ehhh ….
I bit too melancholic. I cannot relate to his dry desert winds. He should write more songs about grey dull skies and interminable rain.
Nothin really stood out
Boring
This album was so slow. Not a favorite of his for me.
Was not a fan. A really melancholic album.
Dull, dreary, couldn’t get into it
Eh, shortish and chill. Barely fine.
Fine to listen to. A bit boring. Some Nick Drake moments.
okeish
I listened to a lot of Beck's Guero album in my 20s but I have never listened most of Beck's other music. He sounds pretty sad in this one. It's not offensive, just forgettable. Review of Reviews: Yeah he sad. People seem pretty split on this one, too. Best Track: Lost Cause
"Tires to clinically dead" vocals are not my thing.
2 Just not my type of music (or maybe I wasn't in the right state or mood). This music could be played in a cafe in the background, but that's not something I would sit down and carefully and mindfully listen to. Although there were maybe 1-2 songs which were actually good.
OK
Definitely an album you have to be in the mood to listen to....which I wasn't when I played it. Definitely a brilliant album, which actually reminded me of Pink Floyd - I just wasn't it the right maudlin mood.
Oh no not another beck album. pleasant but uninspired
Easy to listen, easy to forget.
Sounds like blur or oasis but not as good as either of those
mopey sadsack shit. dislike
Not a bad album just not a lot going on to keep you there
This sounds like an homage to the singer-songwriter country music of the mid-70s. Not a fan.
Not really my jam. 'Easy listening' that seems to try and be a rip of the Beatles and Donavan.
Eh it's not bad but not my favorite. It has a nice sound but doesn't really go anywhere like the whole thing is slow sad songs. Not for me.
Too slow, too melancholic
Nothing really stood out about it to be honest. Not horrible though I guess. (47%)
Alright, listened to the hits, one I liked.
I’ve never been a big Beck fan. Maybe on a second listen. But a 2 for now.
This feels like it should be something I like - I usually enjoy down-tempo sad boy shit. It just didn't grab me.
Eh. Bland, nowhere near as good as some other Beck albums.
I don't know that i'm that into ballads
got bored
Didn’t do a lot for me
I think this is simply OK. I find it overly produced and congested. It is as if Beck wanted to make a Nick Drake record (who wouldn't) and lost his way. Where Nick Drake nailed melancholy, Beck comes off as mannered.
Sad beck make long ass album
The album was wonderfully dreary and miserable, and put me on a downer. There are a few nice highlights (The Golden Age). I think it was too long, nearly all the songs outstay their welcome and cross over into irritating. I do think he's very good, I just think someone needed to step in and tell him to stop being so smug about his melancholy, and to tighten up the album.
Had not really listened to Beck before but I was not into an hour of misery and sadness. Perhaps if it caught me on a better day I'd have enjoyed it more. I don't think the album sounding so repetitive helps it either.
Vocals are good, instrumentals are moody, and I appreciate most of the album overall. Unfortunately, it's an absolute slog to get through. Nothing particularly interesting or gripping to any one song. Too many times while listening did bury my face in my hands, deeply sighing, wishing I was listening to something else.
A bit dull.
Boring crud with a coupled good moments
Incredibly samey. Incredibly boring. At a push you could say you could listen to a couple of tracks from the album, but there again, they would be instantly forgettable.
Buck
Well, it's not my sound, and I had a hard time trying to focus on the music, while listening to "Sea Change". My favourite part - when I just gave up half way and turned it off, it was like my will to live came back, very euphoric experience. Maybe that's why I will give a good 2 stars for this album, instead of a more deserving 1.
I think that I was intrigued at first because his voice was mellow and soft but I also think that it went on too long and I got real bored real fast and sick of him in general. If the album was much shorter I would have been able to appreciate the singing and music more but it was making me angry how long it went on.
Laconic. Odd. Or rather, not close to what I'd expected. I like a fair amount (most?) of this music when it doesn't sound like a (more) boring Wilco. One of my problems is that Beck's slacker vocals become tiring after a while. Real tiring. Sounding too much like Cobain (not a compliment). I don't know how to feel here - e.g. "Lonesome Tears" has a Radiohead+Elbow+Travis feel to it - all bands that I like, but I'm not fully connecting here. A few years prior to this one he put out "Midnight Vultures" which was a game-changer for me; I loved the modern/electronic/sampling touches he put on those tracks which were a lot more aggressive and upbeat than this platter. Don't want to suggest that he should have put out more of the same but jeez man - listening to this makes me understand how my wife feels when I play too much Radiohead. TL;DR: Too much of the same drudging pace; any one of these tracks would have been great on a better album. Slightly disappointing. 4/10 2 stars.
Feels sad and forgettable
no. not my kind of downer album
Angst! Pity! Melancholy!
Way too long. Way too sad. Not my jam.
Mopey folk Beck is fine if you are into that sort of thing. For my money the real entertainment is DJ Funkypants Beck. 2 stars.
The opening track Golden Age I knew from before and love. So I had high hopes going into this. But the rest of the album is just a well produced bore.
Beck trying to do mellow folk funk.
Vähän laiskaa poppista, en erityisesti välittänyt.
It brings me a heavy heart to give this such a low rating. I loved Odelay when I heard it a few months ago, so I expected to quite like this one, but this album was nothing to me. Everything sounded the same. It was a low energy album, which I did like the tone of generally, but nothing made an impression on me. I get why the album is sad, but I just don't find it interesting to listen to. I guess my favourite song was Paper Tiger.
Best Song: Paper Tiger. The one song that doesn't sound like it's on life support. Worst Song: Side of the Road. So sleepy it doesn't even sound like he wants to be singing it. Overall: Music to overdose to.
Not my favorite. I liked the lyrics and appreciate Beck being a chameleon. This also sounds like a very personal album for him. There were about 3 songs I enjoyed, and the rest were just a little too melancholy and slow for me. I was actively waiting for some songs to be over, 2/5
Kinda lame
There are some pretty moments but overall it's just so droning I can't take it
Fell asleep.
Not so good
- First time listening to a Beck album in full - Thought I would enjoy it more based on other Beck songs I've heard - Found it all a bit dull, maybe it would grow on me if I listened again but I probably won't
Quite boring
Bit repetitive
Hmmm. A bit to weird for me
Yeah no
what happened to the sexx laws loser version of beck? when did he turn into a boring borderline country moaner? this was about as interesting as a nautical love story about SHACK and the painted monster written by AI.
Is that Michael Cera? Q. What does SHACK eat for breakfast? A. Lamb chops
Less this more Odelay
Nope
Lidt trist, simpel men skarp instumentering, god vokal, lidt for langt
Not bad, but I was a little bored after a while.
Nothing really to say, other than I'm not really a Beck fan. I didn't connect with this album and therefore found it boring. The standout tracks were cool though. "Paper Tiger" feels like it's been slapped on with an orchestral filter, which on its own sounds great, but a bit awkward on top of Beck's performance. And "Round the Bend" sounds like a villain movie trailer theme song. 2.25/5
Different from what I expected from Beck, good but I'd prefer other work of his
Started ok but over time got so zoned out of the music that It was just playing on the background without noticing anything
-"Sunday Sun" gets heavy at the end, that was nice -Other wise a very boring album that I just wanted to turn off. It was just in the same kinda sad mood the whole time
The bits that sound like the National are alright
Not all sea changes are positive, and this album—probably my least favorite Beck album—is evidence of that. Beck is at his best when unbridled, and this is too restrained for my taste. My time's much better spent listening to "Odelay" or, my personal favorite, "Midnite Vultures."
Not what I was expecting from a Beck album. Didn't enjoy it all that much. Needed to go back to his first album after as a palate cleanser.
My first experience with Beck was... not great. I absolutely hated 'Odelay,' so I was hesitant when this started. But it wasn't that bad. It wasn't great, but it certainly didn't hit the lows I was expecting. A little too mopey and depressing for my taste, and I still am not a huge fan of Beck's voice, I guess. The longer it went on, though, the less I liked it and the more grating it became. Should have stopped while you were ahead, Beck.
This has a very pleasant sound. And the sonic palette is distinctive relative to most of what else was coming out at this time. But it's not new, it's not that exciting (in fact it's downright soporific), and while it has a more "adult" sound, it's not really that sophisticated. Beck has a really limited vocal range too - a pleasant voice, but very limited. Serious question - if I'm in the market for adult alternative soft rock, is this really better than Five For Fighting?
This is not like what I've heard from Beck. It's very mellow but sad and dreary. Would have to be in the right mood to listen again.
I dont know, I was kind of bored? Music was good, but nothing really grabbed my attention in two listens. Maybe future listens will change my mind 2/5
Some of the music is good, but his singing doesn't do anything for me.
Autumn is starting to kick in, I'm a bit cold and a bit hungover. This album does a great job amplifying these feelings. It's decent but not outstanding
Beck doing his best Nick Drake impression. It's not bad, just a bit too sad for me right now.
Nokon fine sangar, men stort sett ikkje fengande.
Hmmm I knew beck had this in him but an entire album? Was not expecting that. It's a nice listen. I'm not blown away or anything. It was good background noise. I like the wilder beck to come. Give me some devils haircut, and looser over this.
Not for me
A big departure from his normal sound, it didn't quite resonate with me like his other music has. Slow, melancholy, and hard to enjoy. Not a fan.
I don't know who this music is for but it's certainly not for me. Mostly bored
+ The Golden Age (4 STARS) + Paper Tiger (2 STARS) - This one weirds me out for some reason + Guess I'm Doing Fine (3 STARS) - Reminds me of "Let's Duet" from Walk Hard, but otherwise fine. + Lonesome Tears (2 STARS) + Lost Cause (3.5 STARS) - Not bad. Give me more catchier choruses/repetition, Beck! + End of the Day (2 STARS) + It's All In Your Head (3 STARS) + Round the Bend (1 STAR) - The orchestral background sounds like a drama scene in a soap opera. The vocals are too slow and don't match. + Already Dead (2 STARS) + Sunday Sun (3 STARS) - Sunday suuuuu-u-u-unn is catchy + Little One (2 STARS) - Uneventful + Side of the Road (2 STARS) OVERALL (2.5 STARS): So boring. There was nothing catchy in this which would be fine if the lyrics weren't pretty cliche and simple.
Scientology is a cult. Album is a bore, Beck has better albums imo.
Slow, spacey, sleep-inducing. I listened to this on a late night drive and I don't remember anything about it except that I took a little interest in track 8, 'Round the Bend'. However, that's just because of its atmospheric similarity to Nick Drake's 'River Man'. I'll have to revisit this, but for now I can only award it a two.
Not for me
Pop excesivamente suave y sin muchas pretensiones. Ritmo muy plano. Canciones un tanto anodinas. Buena voz, pero muy falto de chispa
this makes me want to Sea Change to a better Beck album
Listened Before? N This one was kind of boring. I've been listening to Beck's stuff off and on since his first album. None of them have ever done anything for me like that first one. I think I'll pass on this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Lost Cause
Well produced and very boring.
skipped my way through all the songs
Good grief they picked the most boring Beck album. Almost nothing musically interesting and almost all the songs sound the same. This is far inferior to my favorite Beck: One Foot in the Grave (the deluxe version has the better version of It's All in Your Mind).
Like beck, men like ikkje at paper tiger e ein dårlig sample av cargo culte
Sea Change Beck. Hope Change Back.
Was ok… felt songs seemed depressed
I couldn't wait for this to be over. Just sad and boring and depressing and all sounded the same. 3/10
i cant stand this stuff. 1-2 bc i just didnt listen really.
Interesting. Beck from 2002. Hadn't heard any of this before, and while not exactly objectionable, Beck really is one morose motherfucker right here. I'm sure if you'd just been sacked, your other half had dumped you for your mum and your best mate decided that they'd rather take up stoat farming in the Hebrides than talk to you again, this would be an ideal soundtrack. But for a nice run out on a May evening when you just wanted to put a few miles under your feet - it just won't do at all.
turned this off after 1 minute to listen to charli xcx / rating n/a belongs on this list n/a
I've seen Beck in concert twice, but literally wasn't familiar with any song on this album. Which makes sense because this music is a little more mellow than most of the songs he plays live. Completely listenable, but just a little on the sleepy side for me.
