Reviews (page 13 of 13)

A lot of good songs, but I can only like it so much with a boring voice like Beck’s. 2.5/5

This one was a real journey for me. Ups and downs throughout and not sure I was ready for an album from Beck which seemed to be dealing with a break-up. Some great tracks such as 'Paper Tiger' and 'It's All in Your Mind'. However, for me, Beck's musical ventures into the pop genre are much more to my liking. Favorite track: Paper Tiger

Nije me nikad privlačila njegova glazba, a sad znam zašto.

Didn't enjoy. Very slow and depressing. Another day I may have been more in the mood but not today.

Beck sad, sad boring, sad not always boring, beck sad boring 2

This isnt a great introduction to Beck. Songs started to sound the same about halfway through.

trööööök

Why is this guy here? I mean, there are thousands of artists that sound exactly the same as he does. These songs are just... normal. Nothing more than that.

I wanted to like this album so much. The instruments and the flow of the music were gorgeous, but I just couldn't stand the singing. In most songs, Beck seems disinterested in his own music.

I never listened to much Beck purposefully before but he has a big reputation for sad tunes. On listening to a whole album, I'm not overly impressed. Whilst listening I was thinking "I bet I'd love this if I had some kind of nostalgic ties to it". It is a mixture of sounds which I really like and was really into as a teenager. Alas, I have no such ties and found it a bit dull. Add on to that the fact that Lost Cause made me mad, (listening to the words I couldn't help but think what an arrogant little twerp, get in the bin), and you have yourself 2 stars.

I didn't listen to this properly so I feel like I didn't give it a proper go, I might go back and listen again or I might not. Not sure if it matters. Probably nobody will read this now anyway, not that that's the point but you know. If you are reading this, next time you see me say 'lemons and strawberries' then tap my right shoulder with your left arm and I'll give you a tenner.

I thought I was going to like this and I'm pretty sad to say I found in plain Jane boring! Just a bit wishy washy and nothing stood out

Does not grab me at all

Guess I don't get Beck. Dull

This could have been a great 30 minute album or maybe an EP. A lot of the songs just run too long to be so similar.

Slow calm whiney

It was too one-note for me. Lost Cause was a good track though, I liked it. I zoned out of all the sadness and only noticed that it was over when Spotify automatically went into Beercan off of Mellow Gold. I thought "there's my Beck!" and I was happy again.

Rock de cantautor. Me ha parecido un tostonazo.

Meh. A lot of the songs sounded the same and didn’t contain enough emotion. 4/10

Too slow

I know a LITTLE about Beck, I know he's a bit of an alternative darling, and the few songs of his I know are from the early 90s... this could go either way. Ok first song is pretty cool. It's a bit more downbeat than I expected, at least compared to his earlier stuff. Not exactly an award winner imo, and it goes FAR too long for something that never really kicks into overdrive. Final thoughts: this would have been a 3 if he'd known when to rein it in a bit, but this just draaaaagged. And that's after a genuinely good opening track. 2/5.

Boring shit

Bit dull and tedious. Not my Beck

This is generally considered to be one of Beck's best, but I don't get it. I've heard very little Beck, but like the rap and samples. This was almost all acoustic. No turntables and a microphone.

Didn't really like this one other than "Lost Cause". Really depressing stuff.

too melancholy for me. every song sounds the same. 2 stars

never really liked beck and this didnt change my mind 2 - not for me but doesn't hurt my ears.

Ned meins

Pretty mellow and not really what I was expecting.

Favourite Song: Lost Cause

Yawn. Pretty much what I expected after seeing the album cover. The chorus' and outro for Lonesome Tears were pretty strong though. Best track: Lonesome Tears.

I've been aware of Beck since I was a kid. He always won Best International Male at the Brits and MTV awards but Id never really listened to him or knew much of his stuff. After listening to this album I'm pretty much in the same position. Insipid, melodramatic melancholia.

Paper Tiger, Lonesome Tears, Album quand même très chiant

Didn't really click for me.

The sound is okay, but its just SO SLOW. It is not a great album to listen to the day after DST kicks in. I did not get through the whole album for fear of falling asleep. Its salvages a 2 star because it is not bad musically, I can tell the vocals and instrumentation is pretty good despite the sleep inducing overall product

I really like Beck’s “ Mellow Gold” album. And compared to that, he really nailed the Title here, but that’s about it. “Sea Change” is a sea change from that album. While I loved the guitars, keyboards, melodies and crazy lyrics from Mellow Gold, this album counters with a lot a benign dull. Nothing here to see or hear, please just move along.

too slow, expected more

Me aburre.

Sea Change by Beck is an album I didn't see change all that much. At this point in Beck's career, I think people probably had a specific image of him being experimental/poppy and not so slideguitary, so maybe this album came as a surprise. However, this album reminded me most of his first album Stereopathetic Soulmanure, a few songs which you could mix into this album musically without effort. Once again, in the review for this album, the 1001 book prints some lines that make it sound like this album shouldn't be in the list > Certainly the lyrics lack a little bite (he rhymes "before" with "before" on "End Of The Day"), while the vocals range from tired to clinically dead.

Some nice bits but a bit flat over an album

Fuck... this is a depressed Beck and it sucks all the fun out of what usually is a fun listen.

I didn't get it....:-(

Inget positivt album direkt.

Boring. 4/10

Beck...

mellow. a bit depressing.

This was better than anticipated but an extremely tough finish. Like one long depressing break-up. Not something I would go back to but exceeded my low expectations going into it.

Was boring

Nice guitar music, but fucking depressing

Too slow. Too moody. Was not a fan of this album.

No "bad" songs on this album but also none that stand out at all. Kind of boring and bland. Not much to see here

There’s nothing particularly wrong with it... I probably wouldn’t listen again. Unless I felt like listening to something really boring. Then I’d probably listen to it again. I actually gave up after track 9 and listened to Jazz Samba again instead. That was great.

Really didn't do much for me

God I don't think I'll ever get the appeal of Beck - is it a generational thing like John Mayer and the Dave Matthews Band where you had to be there to get it? Just mumbling white men left and right. I went into this with a positive mindset but my god do I hate this album I could barely get through it. The music in itself is beautiful but his voice, the mumbling, the lyrics god it's like a little bit of everything and a whole lot of nothing. I don't know why this made me so mad. I initially didn't dislike it as much but as the day went n it grated me more and more.

So incredibly boring and awful

just play loser

Sadly this was pretty boring. Every song sounds the same, and not particularly good.

This is my second Beck album in as many months on this generator, and my review is the same as it was last time. Not for me. Not even remotely.

Not really my type of song be some of the song do sound good just wasn’t my style of music

Slow, uninteresting and doesn't go anywhere. Sounds very samey all the way through. Repetitive and boring. 1.

cheeeeks

Load of bollocks

No me fusto

This geezer has an annoying face. The album sucks too.

Dreary, dreary indie. The songs are dull and Beck's voice and vocal style does absolutely nothing to add any sort of interest. 'Round The Bend' sounds like it has a strong Nick Drake influence, but lacks any of Nick's charm. I really did not like this one

Ah well.

Boring

Didn’t do much for me, and was expecting much more I like his early stuff - this was a bit nothing?

Not good

I like Beck. I've listened to this album at least 3 times previously. I couldn't tell you anything about it. Dull.

What a long, dragging album, that 52 minutes felt like it stretched on forever. I kept waiting for something like 'Loser,' 'Where It's At,' or 'Devils Haircut,' but it never showed up. I haven't really kept up with Beck's stuff over the years, so I'm genuinely curious: what ever happened to him? This feels like a completely different artist.

Another artist that I like the idea of more than their actual work.

Not for me. Reminded me of a 5th grader first learning chords on their instrument and a moody teenager whining about the woes of life.

was soll das?

This is an incredibly frustrating album, because when I read the lyrics, some of them are actually heartbreakingly beautiful, like 'Already Dead'. But Beck does this 90s/2000s indie rock thing of refusing to enunciate anything clearly, so the lyrics just turn into 12 tracks of sonic mush. Great poetry collection, terrible album. Fuck you for pairing such great lyrics with such garbage music.

Consistently down-tempo, dreamy, & one-note.

I don’t know it kinda gives me 2017 vibes but not in a good way like a galaxy print leggings…

This album was so slow, sad, and a bit winy at times. It took me multiple days to get through it. Did not enjoy.

Reminded me of those indie songs that get played during sad sitcom scenes. Bored to death.

Too slow and depressing for my taste

This is the second Beck album I've endured and I just didn't bother after the first few songs. A quick scan of the others showed it to be a collection of sameness and I'm really disappointed. I always felt I should 'dig' Beck, I can now affirm that I think his music sucks.

Absolute boring garbage

BORING

Monotone drone

Top 3: Little One, Paper Tiger, Lonesome Tears

There's a good song on here but mostly it's country/folk adjacent and when it's not evoking that, it's boring as hell.

Dude low key sucks, should not have multiple albums on here

Booooring

I didn’t enjoy the sound or his voice. I’m not really a fan of country music.

Not great. Not even good. It's Beck. That should explain it.

No cowboy.

Che lagna (what a drag)

Snoozefest

This hardly feels essential? This feels like Beck said, I wanna make a Radiohead record and tried to do that and accidentally made a Flaming Lips record but it was boring. I'm not a beck fan. How many albums does he have on here? 7/19

Lowkey languid.

This just kept fading to the background. Couldn’t keep my attention even as I tried. I gave up by track 8.

Never liked Beck, so naturally, I did not like this album.

Really disliked this album. It was slow and I didn’t like his voice. Would actively avoid listening to these songs ever again.

Not my favorite.

Sorry boring

white people music. I thought I was an indiehead but this was a boring listen.

Loš dan za ovakvo smeće od albuma. 1/5, 1.5/10

I am convinced one of the author's of list favorite genres is this slow country tinged dreamy rock. I'm only about 11 albums into this journey and almost all of the rock albums have had this same sound. It's telling that not only is this album itself nor a single song featured are on Beck's most popular albums on Spotify that I'm not alone in being unimpressed. The whole album is so damn boring. None of the songs are memorable and barely differentiable. I'm not sure how this album made it on here compared to all the millions of others.

Another tough one. From what I knew of Beck’s music previously, I expected more excitement, innovation and risks. I get that this is about his break up, but the result is a maudlin, ploddy record. Musically it’s ok. Some arrangements that hint at being really good but never quite get there in my opinion. Again, I’m aghast that this is ranked here among truly great albums.

This is not why you listen to Beck.

I have a bunch of Beck songs saved, and I own my favorite two albums (mellow gold and odelay). But I unfortunately hated this album. It did nothing for me. I think the problem is that the beautiful angelic music just doesn’t mesh well with his vocals. In a song like hot wax his vocals fit perfectly. But on this album they felt so melodramatic and distracting, while the actual music of the album was enjoyable and relaxing. Honestly I hope Beck’s other albums are on this list cause this is like one of the absolute worst to start with.

Didn’t like it.

not my cup of tea. Too depressed

I've never been a big fan of Beck. I find most of his stuff boring and forgettable...and this album is no exception :P Nothing stood out as anything really good, tho I guess nothing also stood out as being really bad either.

Boring couldn't even make it past the third song.

Too emo too slow. 1/5

I don’t like the slow monotony

I wish they'd stop letting Beck make music. He's the Jared Letto of the music world. Who is enjoying this? Who keeps letting him make stuff? What pact with the devil was made to enable this and how do I make a pact to cancel this out?

not for me too boring

SOOOOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOOOOW. One track is tolerable. Two gets you on a suicide watch list.

And Beck again. This could be fun. Does he actually consider himself an avant-garde artist? My God, he definitely isn't one. This is just bad, conventional crap. "Sea Change," well, I don't see any change here. Beck is still called Beck. His songs are still his songs. I still think they're bad. I'm still not going to listen to them. I've only ever briefly played the material, and voila, no real change. The man is just as messed up as ever. Yes, the man is musically "Already Dead," and what does "Sunday Sun" remind me of? This is definitely not "The Golden Age," but at best a "Paper Tiger."

Dreary

really boring and not super good imo

If you want chill Beck that's still inventive and fun, check out Mutations. This one is boring and derivative.

Meh. Guy has feels, wants to express himself, wants to tell the world his feels are different to everyone else’s feels. Wants to make money from his feels. Wants to be someone. So male, so millennial. Meh.

Well that was.. forgettable? Is this really the same guy that sang “Loser”? Not that any of it is good, but damn this sounds different. I found myself feeling inescapably bored throughout this entire record, the silence at the end of it was possibly my favourite part. There’s some pretty guitar playing at times, I guess. 1*

Didn't care for this one at all.

Not for me. Too slow and sad.

Too depressing for me. But these are the least quirky songs I have heard from Beck.

Dookie

I started writing my review and it turned into a suicide note so I’m gonna start again. I was cooking when I listened to this album and fell asleep standing up like some fucking bitch ass horse and then woke up to this cis/het white boy singing to me saying that it’s all in my head??? Is what all in my head??? My depression ??? Is white boy gaslighting me?? Spit your fuckin words out and say them with your chest, pussy hoe. The focaccia I’m making is more interesting than this album so here’s my recipe: Focaccia 2-3 cups warm water 2 1/4 tsp yeast 1 heavy tsp honey Allow to bloom ~10 minutes Add 4 cups flour 1tsp salt 1tbs eeoo Mix, cover, and let rise 30 minutes Fold 4 sides in, add eeoo around edges of bowl, cover, and let rise 30 minutes. Repeat total of 4 times. Transfer to 9x13 or two smaller baking sheets that’s covered in more eeoo that you think you need. About 1/4 cup. Flip dough over in oil so it’s completely covered and make dents with fingertips, cover and let rise 45-60 minutes. Bake at 450° 22-25 minutes with bowl of water underneath Incorporate herbs, Calabrian chilis, and hard cheese into folding process or when you make dimples at the end. If you add them at the end, consider chopping them up in advance and marinating them in olive oil while you do the rest of the baking to incorporate flavor into the oil you use.

I love a sad album but this just doesn’t hit. Insanely boring.

Depressing.

Tedious Pap

Not great, didn’t listen to everything. Voice sounds different than his face looks. All songs sound the same.

Tried so hard to like this, but i think it didnt have enough diversity between the songs, and it was way too sad for me, i normally dont like sad music. music isnt good just because its sad and has hardhitting depressing lyrics, it has to be interesting besides that, is my opinion.

Once again, I don't usually listen to music for the lyrics so this is booorrrrriiiingggggg...

I'm a huge sucker for strings, don't get me wrong, but they don’t add anything to the album at all. He slaps strings on his shitty rock songs to make them seem GRAND (Which is UNNECESSARY and STUPID). Instead of doing anything interesting (like Babybird), the songs don’t really change much. I think the songs are too long, and it doesn’t help that the album progresses very slowly. Beck doesn’t sound great either. He almost sounds dead...

Could not get into this one, all the songs sound very similar.

As someone who does not shop at Abercrombie and Fitch, or take downers, I'm not into this.

Not excited to listen. It was fine background music. I don’t get the hype

Dull dull dull dull dull dull

I would actually swap this for Guero

Seichter Chamber Pop.

Worst gig ever seeing Beck tour this miserable album

Not a fan

Had to turn it off before I got too depressed.

I yawned.

So so bland

1. the golden age - 1 2. paper tiger - 1.5 3. guezz im doing fine - 1.5 4. lonezome tearz - 1 5. lozt cauze - 1 6. end of the day - 1 7. itz all in your mind - 1 8. round the bend - 1.5 9. already dead - 1 10. zunday zun - 0 11. Little one - 1 12. zide of the road - 1.5

Incredibly boring

I apreciate the soft rock style and the album was apparently inspired by his breakup with his girlfirend so the thems on the album are very sad and more depressing. But none of the song really strike me ig is not for me but its still good.

I hate beck and why is this album so long!! I had to fast forward and I’m not sorry about it

I love Serge Gainsbourg. On this showing, I doubt Serge would love Beck though, unless he is somehow getting royalties for the tunes 'pastiched' here.

Not for me

Beck is hit or miss for me. Not a fan of this album. I liked his album Modern Guilt and some of the older stuff…but my biggest thing is the vocals. A bit too monotone for me.

Couldn't finish, too sad

Monotonous every track pretty much the same.

A bit too country/folk

Bored me senseless. I completely forgot I had music on in parts

Absolutely not my cup of tea.

Who took a shit in this man's coffee? 💩

eh I thought I liked beck but this was not for me

Holy shit this was bad. Several songs were skipped. None were good.

Lowkey Coldplay vibes but too melancholic for me. Didn't really enjoy it

He makes me sleepy

watered down spoon, how is that possible

Snoozic.

This ain't for me.

Some of the music could possibly be a bit enjoyable, but I really dislike Beck’s voice. Is his jaw wired shut while he sings?

Not my style

Not my thing. Didn’t get past the first 2-3 songs

If it wasn’t for Lost Cause this album would be one

Breakup album

Dreary…

1/5 way too low profile and gentle for my taste.

Whack. Boring

Not a fan of beck, none of the songs really stand out on this indie-ish/country-ish album

Great for coding, super mellow

Pretty good. Probably better listening with headphones
