Per me è veramente impossibile ascoltare metal, non fa per me. Il problema non è questo disco in particolare, è proprio il genere. Non mi coinvolge emotivamente

I have not really listened to that much Metallica and was under the impression that they were better than their peers and the acceptable side of thrash metal that everyone can get on board with. Maybe this is true of their later albums - but I found this a struggle and only marginally better than Slayer/ Anthrax/ Megadeath and way inferior to Iron Maiden/ Deep Purple (recent listens ). Its all very repetitive - very mechanical drumming and chuggy guitars and pained vocals. There is no fun or theatre to it.

As with much Metallica I get flashes of brilliance before it immediately falls to the default of chug n thrash. Technically great but emotionally empty soloing. That's where Blackmore or Slash provide a bit of nuance. The opening track 'Blackened' is perfectly illustrative, starting with an excellent fugue-like synth intro before ceding to muted power chords; then tempo change to allow for lightning fast solo, interchangeable between tracks. It's a very similar story to 'Master of Puppets' where they rose above the crowd with 'Orion' but otherwise fell back to a morass of distorted power chords, and a vocal with very little nuance. Metallica has written some enduring classics - Orion, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters amongst them - and when this albums at its best it explores that side of their songwriting - alas the gravitational pull is back to the formulaic pentatonic distortion.

Good album

Not a big fan of this album at all. The songs are repetitive, but i mean the guitar solos were great, thats the one thing that i enjoyed.

i feel like this is objectively good music but omg is it boring to listened to, the start and ending of each song is fine to listen to (in some places even good/great) but the 3 minutes in the middle of each song is so samey sounding it made getting through this album such a chore. Somewhat ironically One is the only reason I'm not giving this one star.

Growing up, I was a huge fan of Metallica and would listen to them almost religiously. However, now that I’m in my 40s and going back and listening to this album, I realized that it’s just not good. Lars drumming is abysmal, the songs are 5 minutes too long, the overall feel of the album is just bleh. They’re absolutely one of the fathers of modern American metal, but this album, just doesn’t do it for me anymore.

The shortest song is over 5 minutes long and I don't think any of the songs have enough good content to make them worth being that long. Started to all sound the same at some point. Favourite song: One Least: Eye of the Beholder

This is some kind of nightmare. Sure, Metallica has a couple of popular and cool songs. But when you start listening to their albums in their entirety—it’s just THE SAME SONG playing over and over and over again. I just can’t tell if a new one has started or if the old one is still playing. They’re all exactly the same. And on top of that, they’re all equally boring. The same old tricks, the same song style, pointless solos thrown in at random moments. I really don’t get what’s so popular about this. Maybe it sounded fresh in the ’80s, but now it sounds awful and boring.

I still maintain that this band would be vastly improved with the removal of James Hetfield. Instrumentally, I like it. Hetfieldly, I hate it. I nominate “Harvester of Sorrow” as a theme song for my mom (passive aggressive martyr, but I love her, lol).

The mix is honestly a mess because the total lack of bass makes the whole record sound thin and irritating. The technical drumming and repetitive structures feel super detached from the songs and it just turns into an exhausting and boring listen.

I've never understood the draw of Metallica. They have 5-6 great songs and the rest is formulaic and weak. My college roommate introduced me to them, I was a metal guy but this new incessant beat, angry voice and angry lyrics weren't my thing. I saw them live in '87-'88, opening for AC/DC, and went and got a beer halfway through the set. This is just more of the same. Their sound is repetitive and overly heavy handed and he was still an immature vocalist back in '88. I can't follow his lyrics, perhaps they speak to the masses and are enlightening to some, but I just find them irritating and buried beneath a wall of repetitive chords and power drumming. The listener counts are ridiculous ("One" has 805M listens!?), I cannot imagine sitting around listening to this repetitious drivel. This got on here for "One" which never struck a chord for me. I thought the video was dumb too but it was always on MTV. Every song sounds the same, except "One" which is why it was a hit. The Black Album deserves a spot on here, even "Master Of Puppets" for bringing this "sound" to a wider audience, has more merit. "Hold my breath as I wish for death". I guess I was just never angry enough to get into this so I don't consider it a must-listen or a T1001 album. 2 stars

This is the third Metallica record I’ve listened to now. And I think I can pretty confidently say I don’t get the hype. Most of their songs just aren’t that good. Many sound like the same repetitive riff and singing for far too long. Why are these songs 7+ minutes? Production is terrible. One guitar tone , no bass, and a metronome drum kit for an hour. One is awesome. Always liked that song. Amazing what a little dynamics will do for a song. Would skip everything else on this record. 2/5.

Never heard a Metallica album before and I was very disappointed. Bad production aside , it was so difficult to listen to the monotone delivery of the singer and the drowning double bass style thrash on every fucking track. Track 4 showed they do have the ability to break it up and play something good and it's why I gave it a 2

Alright, I have definitely heard this album but I don't remember anything about the songs (minus the ubiquitous "One"). I know it's infamous for having very little bass in the mix, and it's the first album with Newsted on bass after Cliff Burton died. In my head, the album's not much of a departure, if at all, from what came before it. I don't know, maybe it's the mood that I'm in, but I'm just not really feeling it. I'm not a huge metal guy, so maybe that factors in. I can hear the riffs, and I'm bobbing my head to them. It definitely grooves. Songwriting-wise, it doesn't feel like they've missed a beat here (and I honestly probably like it more than Master of Puppets). I think it's mostly the production. It's like ALL treble, no low-end at all. Is there a remaster of this that improves on it? Is this pretty common for thrash? It's honestly just really hard to listen to. I think I would like it more if it sounded better. Probably could have just been eight tracks as well, this thing is over an hour. Well, at least I always have "One".

I want to like Metallica. I have friends who think Metallica is awesome. I respect how they do heavy metal (or I guess, technically, "thrash metal") but aren't the dumbass spandex and hair metal type of band that were popular back in the 80s, and I respect that their topics aren't just vapid songs about partying and chicks etc. I have given them a very brief listen over the years, but they never really grabbed me. However, I'm pretty sure I have never listened to this specific album before. I think the only songs I kinda know by them are "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters" - both of which apparently came out after this album and were their big radio hits as far as I remember. I came in with an open mind and listened to this one 3 times . Some highlights ... This starts off with an environmental song ("Blackened"). That's a cool surprise, even if it's a little over the top. Good to see someone getting angry over the state of the earth. "And Justice for All..." - which points out that the American justice system and government in general is corrupted by money. I 100% agree with this sentiment. It's even more urgently relevant in 2026 (at the time of writing this review), than anytime in my life. And good for them to be sounding this alarm nearly 40 years ago. "One" - I like the intro, it's not the wall of thrashing, squealing, grinding guitar like on most of the other songs. Maybe that's what people like about Metallica, but it's nice to have a break from it every now and then. The lyrics are great, about a guy severely injured in war. It's a excellent anti-war song, highlighting the personal impacts of pointless wars. I had first heard this as the Chris Cornell cover years ago and really like that version. "To Live is To Die" - Maybe the best song - since it has NO singing and just a very short spoken word bit. Nice break from the growling and shouting. I can sort of hear how they've had some influence on other bands that I like - such as Muse, Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana. There were a few moments where they sounded kind of like Rush to me - maybe there is a little prog influence showing there. My biggest issues with Metallica: 1) Why does this guy have to growl "aagghhhh" at the end of nearly every line? It think it's meant to sound tough or angry - but it just seems stupid, distracting and annoying to me 2) Also - I'm not a big fan of the hyper, sped up, high pitched, mechanical sounding, thrashing guitars. It just puts me on edge - and not in a "let's get pumped up" kind of way - but in an anxiety inducing way. Given that this seems to be their trademark sound - I'm not sure I will ever really get into these guys too much. Curious to see what their other albums sound like when they come up on this list. Oh well, I gave it a shot and ended up clicking "like" on the 4 songs listed above which means I'd be ok if they showed up on my automated playlists. That's 4 more songs from them than I had on my playlists before - so some growth :) I'll have to see if I still like these songs as they pop up in the future. I definitely liked the lyrics more than the music and the vocals - so now I'm wondering if there are other covers of their songs out there. Liked songs on Spotify: 4/9 Rating: 2/5

Definitely not for me. I'm sure it is great if you're into the genre — especially bc even I recognized a song or two from it being featured in random media throughout the years. Not sure this qualifies as an album that everyone must listen to; but different strokes for different folks.

Meh. For me, the best album we heard from Metallica was Master Of Puppets. One is an amazing hit (...And Justice For All is an okay song too), but it doesn't support the entire 1 hour 5 min runtime. One good thing about hearing all this Metallica is that it reminds me of the Band Together Bay Area (a benefit concert I went to in Nov 2017). Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Dead Company and Metallica 😂 Admittedly, I wasn't a big Dead Head during that time. I knew a few tunes and it just so happened that they were going to be playing after my main man, Dave. I remember the majority of the folks around us clearly being dressed like Metallica fans and not bobbing to the tunes at all. Peppered in were some hippies who were really twirling and singing EVERY lyric which definitely made an impression. Their set only had 6 songs, but it really blew me away and started me down the path to true appreciation. This is not an album to listen to if you’re stressed out at work cause it will literally make you feel like you are at war. But lowkey…why did I crush through an assignment like my life depended on it? Perhaps the intense guitar and slamming drums that match the tempo of my typing. Don’t think Metallica is the band for me but I can appreciate the adrenaline rush it gives

Far be it from me to call a Metallica album “bad” BUT this album of 9 songs could’ve been 4 songs and still have the same essence. The songs were so alike that I can’t tell most of them apart (except One). All of them were enjoyable and fun to listen to but when you have multiple 10 minute songs that recycle incredibly similar riffs, it gets boring quite fast. Also the multiple and abrupt switches in melody and rhythm especially in To Live is to Die were not pleasant. I had to keep checking if it was a new song but nope, still the same one. Essentially 9 songs that could’ve been 4 songs and were somehow 20 songs at the same time.

I thought I’d like this album more than I did. You can tell Metallica are talented, and they make sure to mix it up in their songs so that the riffs don’t get stale. It’s this close to being prog metal. But unfortunately for the most part that doesn’t do a lot for me.

In essence, ...And Justice for All is a deep dive into systemic injustice, using complex musical arrangements and powerful, politically charged lyrics to reflect on societal failings, especially within legal and political structures.

As a millennial who is a big metal fan, I honestly haven't given Metallica much time, as the songs I have heard haven't done much for me. I always thought the no bass thing was just a joke, but darn if it's not! James Hetfield's singing is excellent, and the rhythm guitar playing is some of the best, but overall, the album is just kinda flat and one-dimensional.

I would probably never listen to this album again. I never liked Heavy Metal, and found this album unpleasant. The only thing that kept it from a 1 were the impressive guitar riffs and good drumming, but honestly, I don’t get how this made the 1001 top albums you must listen to.

The thing with Metallica is, is that they’re clearly very good at what they do but it all starts to sound same-y after the first three songs.

Huh. More metal. I'm sure I've said it before, but I'm kind of becoming antagonistic towards this genre of music. The promise of hardcore, edgy music always winds up being tepid, uninspired and, above all else, BORING. That being said, I remember thinking that my previous Metallica record - Master of Puppets - was alright. Maybe this successor album will prove to be alright as well. Uh-oh. Not a single song below five minutes and a runtime over an hour. The conciseness-above-all-else, autistic part of my brain is firing off right now. Anyways, I can't say this one worked for me. Maybe I've still yet to hear things right, but metal remains a deeply restrictive genre for me. There really isn't a whole lot you can do when your genre is locked to only one instrument and tempo. That being said, there was a respectable bit of experimentation down the middle of this album and I enjoyed all of the samples. An hour is complete overkill for a metal album, however, and I fell into a heavy slump during the final quarter. Nothing much to say as far as the songs go, though the knocking sound on "The Shortest Straw" kept fucking with me, which was pretty funny. Book time. Controversial among metal fans. A transitionary period within the band's sound. Not convinced yet - over to Wikipedia I go. Has many strengths and weaknesses. Sold very well. Regarded as one of Metallica's best. Yeah, this seems like a good pick. I cosign this inclusion.

Wow these drums sound bad, it's like he's hitting some tin cans, no bottom end whatsoever. Also really not that fussed about most of the songs, even the quite popular ones (other than One). I think a huge disappointment after Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightening. Obvs there's the no bass issue as well which just leaves the whole thing sounding tinny, it's the metal equivalent of someone playing music from their phone.

Very long songs and riffs the album. Idk I guess it was fine? I do not know what I'm listening for with this genre but there was something about the way this sounded that distinctly sounded off to me, beyond just the songs all being way too long. The bass feels oddly burried in the mix, whilst the whole thing has a muddy, overprocessed sound to me that I just do not really enjoy. I'll be the first to say do not trust my opinion on this entire genre as its just not my thing, but hey, I have to review each album up here so here goes.

Blehhhh. This feels like a really generic, one note, sloppy album to me. Felt like I was listening to the same riff for over an hour and the production is really weird. I'm not a Metallica hater by any means, but this is certainly not their best work.

Metallica is a great live band; and a not-so-great studio band. Their songs sound too compressed and, honestly, the same chords and choral sounds on every track. The music translates great live, but I can't deal with most of their studio recordings.

Not my genre, not my band. However did enjoy it more than I expected to at the start. Unfortunately began to drag on about halfway through. If some of the songs had been edited a bit more, it would have been a more enjoyable listen for me. Probably a bad sign I was glad it was done. Favorite song: blackened.

"Thrash metal" hey... well that doesn't really sound like my kind of thing, and the Wikipedia description doesn't exactly do a great job of selling it ("dry mix and nearly inaudible bass guitar"????). But y'know what, Metallica are iconic, so let's go into this with an open mind. Okay, so they're not screaming at least. That's a good start... this has been going on for a while... oh wait we're only halfway through the second song... oh this is a pretty cool guitar riff! ... aaand the song is still going... As is typical of this band, there are impressive musical interludes preceeding the ensuing junk which indicate a high level of musical ability followed by repetitive, a-melodic, unimaginitive, flatly consistent, angry growling accompanied by drums and a percussive guitar. Go away please.

Why are the songs so long? Many of these albums have very long songs and if you’re not 100p on it they feel even longer.

I’m not a huge Metallica fan, but I do stand with the party line that when they stopped being a thrash band and moved towards arena rock their quality went down. A lot of signs of that here but One is a great song in isolation. Probably a harsh 2.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but this album solidified an idea for me. This list is not meant to be 1001 Five Star Albums - it’s 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die- it’s a bucket list, not a greatest hits. They’re not all gonna be amazing or perfect, but things everyone should EXPERIENCE - like skydiving or swimming with dolphins or eating tofu - things you should do just to say you did them, right? This list is akin to that. Some are going to be exhilarating, like nude tabogganing, and others are going to suck, like nude tabogganing. But they will all make you better because you experienced them. So, I listened to this album and there is no way I would have done so if not for this project. To me, most of the songs sound the same, they are all too long and they don’t speak to me. But, I experienced it, I’ve rated it and I can cross it off my list. So, bring on the next one, you algorithmic cultural overlords.

Tässä levyssä oli sitä potkua jopa vähemmän, mitä Winehousen levyssä, mikä on sinäänsä jo saavutus, kun ottaa genren huomioon. En tiedä enkö vaan ymmärrä Metallican musiikkia, mutta jotenkin kuulostaa kun ne soittaisi jossain merikontissa ja kaikki nauhotetaan ulkopuolelta. Hetfieldin soundista oon aina tykännyt, mutta tuntuu että se on liian dominoiva verrattuna muihin instrumentteihin.. Jotenkin epäbalansissa. Metallicalla muutamia hyviä biisejä ja niistä tähän levyyn osui yksi ja varmaan ihan syystä se on myös yksi kuunnelluimmista. Silti tälle annan yhden enemmän kuin Amylle, koska Metallica ei kuitenkaan samalla tavalla kyllästytä ja sentään yksi hyvä kappale lätyllä.

Olen monessa levyarviossa narissut saundeista, joten pakko jatkaa tässäkin KAIKEN REILUUDEN NIMISSÄ. Basso on unohtunut tarkoituksella tai tahattomasti kokonaan (meemitierin juttu) ja kitarapuolikin on jätetty sävyttömäksi, joten nämä elementit saavat yleisesti tämän kuulostamaan ohukaiselta eikä hevanderius välity kuulijalle. Varmasti ideana on olla KARU, mutta jos samalla haluaa, että on HEVI, niin ratkaisu pitäisi olla joku muu kuin valittu linja. Biisit eivät ole parasta mmmheetallicaa, joten ei tämä kokonaisuus kauheasti plussan puolelle jää.

Mikähän siinä on, että metallica ei vaan kertakaikkisesti lähde. Höh.

I don't get Metallica. All their songs sound the same and boring

I kind of get into the music-only introductions , but only just (seems mostly juvenile), and when Hetfield starts singing I skip to the next song. Repeat. Why does the guitar sound never change (except for One, and then only partway)? Maybe more later, but by then I just abandoned it.

At the end of the day, I just can't with these guys. They have maybe 4 songs that I like, but even then, I certainly don't want to hear those 4 in a row. "One" is a good tune. The rest of these just all sound the same to me.

The only thing keeping this from a 1… is One.

I'm just not much of a metal fan. Metallica's black album came out at just the right time for me so I have a lot of nostalgia for that specific one, but otherwise this music (despite being able to appreciate the technical prowess and artistry of the band) borders on sounding cheesy to me.

Not my favorite flavor of Metallica. Makes me realize how much their transition on the Black album really made them into the band that I like to listen to.

Favourite track(s): The Eye Of The Beholder; To Live Is To Die If you like riffs, riffs over riffs, for minutes ongoing, then this may be the album for you. Supported by punchy drums, this seems to be the main focus of most tracks, with the riffs sometimes varying but most songs congregating into a whole to my untrained ears. Most tracks also change rhythms at least once - does not make listening any easier. Lastly, upon first (and only) listen, the (mostly) sparse lyrics seem a little too dramatic for my taste. Cannot find all that much to like.

9 songs in 65 minutes…. Why so dense? Such a boring record. “One” is an ok song, the rest just all sounds like a guitar chugging the exact same chord repeatedly.

UNNECESSARY YELLING. The first 3 songs are just loud. Hard to listen to lyrics as there's no inflection or emotion. One- the most popular song of the album. Early spoken word stuff is a miss on me, but guitar and lyrics at 3:05 are something special, my favorite part. 4:35 is sick and iconic. Not even motivated to listen to second half of the album. I just don't like it.

It's weird listening to this mostly for the first time in 2025 as it comes across as quite thin in terms of the sound - not what you'd expect. Sure it's incisive and crisp but more like an annoying wasp than overpowering textures. It's not without interest musically but unless you can make that conceptual leap to metal with all its subcultural baggage then there's not enough compensation. The singer isn't great, and it all gets very samey. Then there's One, in the grand tradition of big songs like 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Stairway to Heaven'. It's a high point, but otherwise it's kind of a struggle to keep going. And I didn't. :-(

I had to check if my headphones were defective, but apparently this album was recorded inside of a sardine can? The mix is bad. I'm not a metal head but I appreciate it. I can imagine when this album came out it made waves. But with 2025 ears I can't help but feel like I'm listening to Stone Cold Steve Austin's walk up music. If Napster is still around, I'd encourage you to find this album there.

Metallica was never my jam but I can appreciate their impact on the genre/industry.

Blackened ...And Justice for All One

This isn't for me. It reminds me of sweaty band tshirts and dirty goatees. And something about the way this is produced and mixed is really off putting. It's too smooth and overly clipped, which makes a mockery of the vibe the record seems to be going for.

Even the tracks that should be highlights on this album (the much lauded One) disappear into a busy palate of noise and repetitive guitar and drum techniques. It’s not for me, and my feelings for this genre grow closer to disdain the more metal I hear.

You know what? I really don't like heavy/thrash/death metal (not sure which this album is). But I liked this album (as much as one could), really tried to have an open mind. Would have been 3* but a bit too long and repetitive in the end.

Now that I’m about 1/3 through these albums, it’s time to stop pretending I like things just because I think I should. I don’t like this. It’s exhausting.

Long and drawn out instrumentals. They are good, fun to have on in the background. This is not sitting and listening music for me.

Wish I knew what he was singing about, can't understand anything. Vocals sound nice though, and the guitar and drums are classic decent Metallica. One goes crazy, the rest go mild at best.

Not really my cup of tea. This is my second Metallica album, this being one of their earlier works. I appreciated the skill of the musicians, but I found the songs to be long a repetitive. Overall- fine, but not for me.

There's a reason that I've never listened to a Metallica album. I totally respect the obvious musicianship and talent. I just don't live in this neighborhood. I'm sure that if this is your jam, this is a really good album. Best Songs There are no notable songs for me.

I can understand why Metal like this is so popular so I don't want to knock this album too much, but it just isn't for me. One is the standout track here which is probably my favorite Metallica song of all time. The rest of the tracks sound pretty similar to one another and I can't get fully into it. Nestles into a 4/10 spot for me

Two Metallica albums in the first two months, this is not justice. That said, I found it marginally more tolerable than the previous one. Until they started singing.

I don't know why I dislike this album when I like similar genres, but even One was just ok, and it went downhill from there.

Reminds me of "friends older brothers who smoked" when I was in middle school. It's loud, for sure. It’s technical, yep. But it also kinda drags and mashes together, like a long D&D campaign where everyone takes themselves a little too seriously. Kirk & James' guitars are chugging through hell, and I get why metalheads worship this stuff. Nine-minute songs about harvesting sanity or whatever aren’t really my jam. "One" still rules though. This may be the worst of all the Metallica albums we've had to this point. Up to the song One and after, it seemed liked the same song with the same beat for all. Actually, pretty confident anyone who listens to rock music can tell a Metallica song by the drum beat And what made the album worse, the songs seemed to get longer as the album went on. Not a hater and there are a few songs I love by these guys, but none were off this album. Biggest thrill, hearing March of the Winkie. Wonder of they had to pay royalties to use? For the younger crowd, listen to beginning of The Frayed and check out Wizard of Oz. Them damn flying monkeys still scare me. Wasn't a fan of this album. 2

I wasn't able to connect with this one. The production was amazing, very tight. So I can appreciate the quality overall. But just not one I expect to go back to.

I could only listen to half of this before it started to grate on me. I've heard some Metallica before, which I actually did enjoy, I suppose that's what fans would say isn't the real metallica, or metallica selling out or whatever. Nah, it was Metallica actually making good music, on the evidence of this album. I only enjoyed One. 2/5

I really like James Hetfields voice actually. Not usually my genre, and the reviews on here tend to either be 2 or 5. It's a lot to listen to all in one go, idk if they actually made me a Metallica fan

“It’s no Master of Puppets” - me, and probably most other people. While this album is no slouch, I just don’t think it holds a torch to its predecessor. There are some moments worth listening for here, like the really chunky, slower “Harvester or Sorrow” which slows down its powerchord formula to a pace that makes you feel the thump of the drums and guitars. Then the obvious highlight on here is “One” which is truly among the best metal songs you’ll ever hear, if not the singular best. Metal will never be my in my powerhouse, but I can still appreciate this album in the same way I appreciated MoP: incredibly clean production and composition that stands the test of time, an instantly recognizable sound, and solid storytelling/imagery. Sadly, a point down for this being too similar to MoP

I don't really understand why people like Metallica so much. They are very talented, but every song on this album is indistinguishable from the others. If this album didn't have the word "Metallica" on the front, I wouldn't have listened to more than 30 seconds. Bam, roasted.

I don’t know how to feel about Metallica. Some good stank face crunchy riffs, double kick drum is fun, but I really REALLY despise the overproduced metal sound in every solo. Makes me think I’m listening to Mannheim Steamroller. Hetfield’s got a great voice for this kind of music, but he doesn’t ever change the way he “sings.” So I guess points for practically starting this genre and producing a million copycats, but immediately removing points because I don’t want to listen to the same crunchy riffy style any longer?

I've come to the conclusion that this album is not my type of music. Most songs I did not want to add to my playlist and I didn't really like them. Good music anyways.

It's Metallica, they rock hard. That's kind of the whole thing from my view. It's not my favorite type of music (particularly two days in a row roughly in the same genre), but there's a few decent songs on here and they're clearly talented. This type of thing is probably never going to be top tier for me, but at least I'm fired up for the Orange Bowl now after listening to this on my flight to Miami. overarching theme here is that there’s a magic lost here from their first three albums (prob has a lot to do w/ the death of cliff burton). One is really the only song worth listening to, maaaybe Blackened and Dyers Eve if you’re up for it, but the rest is very meh. pretty much every song is longer than it needs to be. also, i can understand the reluctance to hear bass after burton’s death but making a rock/metal album with that instrument basically missing in the mix is crazy. after listening to this i get why they thought they needed Bob Rock to save them. shoutout weird ass wizard of oz chant

Not going to lie. Only wants to do a couple songs cuz it's 2 days before Christmas and I was shopping and it was already stressful. So I don't need that kind of noise in my life. But hey, they're a popular metal band respecters respects to but not exactly the mine cup of tea.

Hard to say this is breaking new musical ground or an album you’d have to take with you on a short list.

I know a lot of people talk about how Metallica have gone downhilll since their early days, but Lars sucks on this album too.

This album made strong points regarding the justice system and government control in its lyrics however after just a few tracks I found myself getting bored with it. The point was made and had interjections of guitar riffs that ended up blurring into one. I was unimpressed overall but can see how this could be a revolutionary album at the time. I think the Gen Z in me is over it.

I was excited to get a Metallica album. I’ve listened to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning and quite enjoyed both. I did not enjoy this one. All the songs just felt unnecessarily long and I found myself checking to see how long the song had left. They really dragged this one out and it didn’t really hit for me.

Once again not a fan of this but I get why metal enjoyers would like this.

Thuds along quite nice but never gets going

I'll always think of this album as so much wasted potential unfortunately. The way James and Lars nuked the bass just to fufill their massive egos really sours it for me. If I'm able to set that aside though there are some fantastic songs here.

Even more Metallica, this must be the 3rd or 4th now in 320 odd doing this challenge! My gut reaction is not another album and its a long one at 1 hour and 5 minutes for 9 tracks. This is all a bit meh and sounds like all the others. There is nothing new and different. Favourite song: I enjoyed eye of the beholder and the opening guitar riff to one. I’m just not a metal fan. There are parts of this that I can see some appeal. But I just can’t quite get there. I hate the voice but some of the music has some redeeming qualities and for that reason I will try to give it a 2.

I can see where the cliche of "metal" comes from in this album. Didn't enjoy it but respect when they can unify their instruments as one.

When I was in High School this would have been a banger. I loved Metallica then and couldn't get enough. When I was in college it would have still been great. But now? It's kind of meh. One is still a banger but the rest of the album was kind of meh. Also I think this is not the most influential Metallica album out there.

Some pretty good tracks, a couple of duds, and all-time great with One, but with the average track length stretching beyond 7 minutes, it can get quite boring and monotonous after a while. But mostly I've never been able to enjoy this one due to the truly awful and flat production. Beyond the complete lack of all bass, the guitar sounds thin and the drums anemic, which only highlights the huge gulf in quality and talent between Lars's drumming and the rest of the band. 2 seems harsh, but what else to rate an album that is actively unpleasant to listen to in it's entirety?

If S&G BOTW is a 1 this is a 2. Theyre not as haed aa megadeth, 1 decent track (one) and a few nodders but its no black album and ik still bitter i lost that vhs of the one music video i got from that car booty in the shadow of argyles ground in 94.

I get that there are huge fans out there, but Metallica is just not my thing. The vocals always feel forced and fake to me.

Finally some Metallica that deserves the title „metal“. Quite different from the Metallica you hear on the radio. However, I found it to be quite monotonous. It’s just not for me.
