Reviews (page 12 of 14)

Fav: One Least Fav: Blackened I just don’t think I’ll ever get Metallica, an hour of them felt torturous

man, i cant stand the vocals on old rock/metal shi some guitar parts are cool tho overall boring fav: to live is to die

I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as some of there other albums, not sure why didn't quite land the same though.

No thanks, I have enough stress in my life as it is. And this riff salad doesn't add anything creatively that I find interesting. Maybe I just need a goatee?

It's a pretty solid album. Have to be in the right mind frame to enjoy it. Still high twos.

Bless us and save us this was long. Not my thing though I wish it was.

I don’t really care for Metallica I’m sorry

Not bothered

I really like James Hetfields voice actually. Not usually my genre, and the reviews on here tend to either be 2 or 5. It's a lot to listen to all in one go, idk if they actually made me a Metallica fan

“It’s no Master of Puppets” - me, and probably most other people. While this album is no slouch, I just don’t think it holds a torch to its predecessor. There are some moments worth listening for here, like the really chunky, slower “Harvester or Sorrow” which slows down its powerchord formula to a pace that makes you feel the thump of the drums and guitars. Then the obvious highlight on here is “One” which is truly among the best metal songs you’ll ever hear, if not the singular best. Metal will never be my in my powerhouse, but I can still appreciate this album in the same way I appreciated MoP: incredibly clean production and composition that stands the test of time, an instantly recognizable sound, and solid storytelling/imagery. Sadly, a point down for this being too similar to MoP

Fav: one

I don't really understand why people like Metallica so much. They are very talented, but every song on this album is indistinguishable from the others. If this album didn't have the word "Metallica" on the front, I wouldn't have listened to more than 30 seconds. Bam, roasted.

I don’t know how to feel about Metallica. Some good stank face crunchy riffs, double kick drum is fun, but I really REALLY despise the overproduced metal sound in every solo. Makes me think I’m listening to Mannheim Steamroller. Hetfield’s got a great voice for this kind of music, but he doesn’t ever change the way he “sings.” So I guess points for practically starting this genre and producing a million copycats, but immediately removing points because I don’t want to listen to the same crunchy riffy style any longer?

Dense, relentless, epic, bludgeoning power - all ROCK, no ROLL

Less into it now than I first was. Almost seems to angry, but also it seems right.

It's ok

Not my thing.

Didn’t enjoy it much beyond “One” and “To Live is to Die”

Und immer wieder ein Push nach vorne. Großartig!

A little too heavy metal for my tastes. A few nice melodic rifts but very heavy on the metal.

I've come to the conclusion that this album is not my type of music. Most songs I did not want to add to my playlist and I didn't really like them. Good music anyways.

It's Metallica, they rock hard. That's kind of the whole thing from my view. It's not my favorite type of music (particularly two days in a row roughly in the same genre), but there's a few decent songs on here and they're clearly talented. This type of thing is probably never going to be top tier for me, but at least I'm fired up for the Orange Bowl now after listening to this on my flight to Miami. Favorite song: One Other: Blackened, To Live Is To Die 1/8/25

Nej.

overarching theme here is that there’s a magic lost here from their first three albums (prob has a lot to do w/ the death of cliff burton). One is really the only song worth listening to, maaaybe Blackened and Dyers Eve if you’re up for it, but the rest is very meh. pretty much every song is longer than it needs to be. also, i can understand the reluctance to hear bass after burton’s death but making a rock/metal album with that instrument basically missing in the mix is crazy. after listening to this i get why they thought they needed Bob Rock to save them. shoutout weird ass wizard of oz chant

midtallica

I think I’m too much of a dweeb for Metallica. It gives me anxiety

Not going to lie. Only wants to do a couple songs cuz it's 2 days before Christmas and I was shopping and it was already stressful. So I don't need that kind of noise in my life. But hey, they're a popular metal band respecters respects to but not exactly the mine cup of tea.

Hard to say this is breaking new musical ground or an album you’d have to take with you on a short list.

I know a lot of people talk about how Metallica have gone downhilll since their early days, but Lars sucks on this album too.

welp, i am definitively not a Metallica fan either. Kirk Hammett needs a tuner.

This album made strong points regarding the justice system and government control in its lyrics however after just a few tracks I found myself getting bored with it. The point was made and had interjections of guitar riffs that ended up blurring into one. I was unimpressed overall but can see how this could be a revolutionary album at the time. I think the Gen Z in me is over it.

I was excited to get a Metallica album. I’ve listened to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning and quite enjoyed both. I did not enjoy this one. All the songs just felt unnecessarily long and I found myself checking to see how long the song had left. They really dragged this one out and it didn’t really hit for me.

Once again not a fan of this but I get why metal enjoyers would like this.

As expected

Exhausting.

A few good ones but generally not my thing

Thuds along quite nice but never gets going

I'll always think of this album as so much wasted potential unfortunately. The way James and Lars nuked the bass just to fufill their massive egos really sours it for me. If I'm able to set that aside though there are some fantastic songs here.

Even more Metallica, this must be the 3rd or 4th now in 320 odd doing this challenge! My gut reaction is not another album and its a long one at 1 hour and 5 minutes for 9 tracks. This is all a bit meh and sounds like all the others. There is nothing new and different. Favourite song: I enjoyed eye of the beholder and the opening guitar riff to one. Least favourite: The rest of the album Album artwork: Cool cover

I can’t say it’s not good, but I don’t like it

80s metal. Not my thing. I do enjoy 90s Metallica

I’m just not a metal fan. There are parts of this that I can see some appeal. But I just can’t quite get there. I hate the voice but some of the music has some redeeming qualities and for that reason I will try to give it a 2.

If you like metal you’ll like this.

Some people call out Lars for being a twatwaffle, but I don’t think that’s fair when really it’s the whole band.

I can see where the cliche of "metal" comes from in this album. Didn't enjoy it but respect when they can unify their instruments as one.

When I was in High School this would have been a banger. I loved Metallica then and couldn't get enough. When I was in college it would have still been great. But now? It's kind of meh. One is still a banger but the rest of the album was kind of meh. Also I think this is not the most influential Metallica album out there.

Interesting…better than most thrash I’ve heard but prefer my rock of the Deep Purple AC/DC variety!

This does nothing for me

Not for me... I understand they were revolutionary in their genre but it's not a genre I enjoy very much. 2/5

Some pretty good tracks, a couple of duds, and all-time great with One, but with the average track length stretching beyond 7 minutes, it can get quite boring and monotonous after a while. But mostly I've never been able to enjoy this one due to the truly awful and flat production. Beyond the complete lack of all bass, the guitar sounds thin and the drums anemic, which only highlights the huge gulf in quality and talent between Lars's drumming and the rest of the band. 2 seems harsh, but what else to rate an album that is actively unpleasant to listen to in it's entirety?

If S&G BOTW is a 1 this is a 2. Theyre not as haed aa megadeth, 1 decent track (one) and a few nodders but its no black album and ik still bitter i lost that vhs of the one music video i got from that car booty in the shadow of argyles ground in 94.

I get that there are huge fans out there, but Metallica is just not my thing. The vocals always feel forced and fake to me.

such an overrated band

1.5 Stars

Just not a huge fan

Finally some Metallica that deserves the title „metal“. Quite different from the Metallica you hear on the radio. However, I found it to be quite monotonous. It’s just not for me.

Nothing playlist worthy

Not my jam. Sorry metalheads. Some very cool guitar work, and I like the intro to One, but the growling vocals are too much of a turn off.

Didn’t really enjoy this. ‘One’ was good.

Respect but not my cup of tea

There’s a reason why the top songs that they are best known for are their best songs because the rest are not good at all

I've finally realized the Metallica songs I enjoy are the slower paced, more thoughtful ones. the heavy thrash beats, and guitar just all sounds the same song after song. and it becomes completely monotonous with the two tracks that are almost 10 minutes long each. nope.

"One" is arguably the greatest heavy metal song of all time, and easily my favorite Metallica song. I pledge allegiance, to the fact, that Metallica is an overrated band, with my ears, one man, under music, against the grain...And Justice For All. Favorite Song: "One".

Well never really Listened to Metallica that much before so let’s see if this is any good in my books. Always assumed this album came out int the 90’s but I stand mistaken Anyways this is definitely not for me. It all is WAY TO LONG and all sounds very similar. This is probably great for Fans of Metallica but it’s pretty average to me. It’s not bad but it’s not something I’m getting much enjoyment out off. “One” is the best song on here 2/5

feels repetitive i understand the appeal, but really not for me screaming lyrics, it doesn't really connect with me i cannot tell the difference between the songs on the album, they all sound the same to me one song is way too long for the repetitive nonsense within 4/10

Not everything is for everyone, and this is not for me. The lead singer’s voice sounds like I’m at karaoke night. Idk if it’s an artistic choice and he actually has a beautiful voice, but art is subjective 🤷🏽‍♀️. I think they’re each clearly very very skilled at their instruments and that was fun to listen to. I also don’t love that 9 songs is over an hour of listening time. All of the songs kind of blended into one another and at a certain point I had no idea if the song had changed or not. Maybe I just am not the audience for the genre, I guess I’ll see when I get deeper into the list.

Apparently I don’t like Metallica as much as I thought I did. This was just all kind of samey apart from a couple of moments. I just kept imagining a bunch of middle aged men in double denim with patches and bad hair headbanging and doing the horns in a dingy club

Oh man I thought this was an auto 1, but actually enjoyed parts of it. I’m going with 2 because I probably won’t come back to this but I was impressed. Just not my vibe.

One Metallica song is nice to listen to. Three songs are my max. An hour is too much for my liking. It was Metallica, as expected.

Please let this be the last Metallica album. I really hate to say this because I hate when people oversimplify art and especially music. There is always nuance if you just look hard enough, always subtlety you’re patient enough to find it. To say that all a band’s songs sound the same is usually the oversimplification I disdain when I hear it and try to avoid thinking myself. But come on, Metallica. I can’t even begin to try and discern the content of one album to the next. You could take any track from any of their albums and rearrange them into a new album and I honestly couldn’t tell you it was wrong. I’m sure there’s more nuance than that here, but I just cannot find it. I do not care. I’ve tried with each of these albums but each time they prove to be the same old story - high stakes that never lower, creepy or uncanny names for song titles and for lyrics, songs that go on for too long, lots of double bass drum, and just the hardest fucking guitar sounds you’ve ever heard. That’s the formula. Count on it. Even when a song starts softer, like “One” for example, it inevitably turns into another stereotypical Metallica song. Same thing with “To Live is to Die.” They can’t do anything else but stick to a formula and it’s boring. I know that a lot of metal is this way, and I also know that Metallica is not representative of every metal band. But come on. Maybe stop trying to be a one trick pony and explore a little more. Two stars. I’m bored. Standout Track: One

Bit samey. Not really for me.

Technical but repetitive. Talented but hallow.

One of the bands that I've never understood / got into. Everyone else rates them but they don't do anything for me.

Uninspiring, very fizzy

Wow crazy how some relatively small changes can change my enjoyment of a band. I did not like this, especially compared to Master of Puppets. Too much drums. Guitar riffs are good as always, but overall too thrash-y for my tastes.

Slightly better than the last Metallica album I got, but they’re really not for me. Endlessly long songs with just soulless metal. Their songs are joyless. Technically fine but uninteresting. This album is especially bad because they’re trying to be “political” but they’re dummies.

I hated this less than the other Metallica album I got. But I still don’t like Metallica or metal in general

Not a fan of metal like this.

Does Metallica know you’re allowed to make an album under 60 minutes? Repetitive and not for me.

Listening to one or two songs is ok, but a whole album of this is just too much for me. Ultimately, it began to sound like one harsh power chord playing over and over.

I’m sure a lot of people who take their music very seriously would disagree, but I don’t think we need this on the list. Master of Puppies, Black Album and that classical thing give us enough representation of these lads. It feels bad giving this a 2, as they are very good at what they do but it brings me absolutely no fun or joy I’m afraid. I think I might have list lethargy.

Just a wall of noise. Whatever fancy music theory they're trying to do is overridden by how disjointed it makes the tracks sound

Not a genre of music I normally listen to anymore, but I can tolerate it more than some other types.

2/10- wow metallica proves that lyrics aren't all that matter but also musical composition. Sorry but quite frankly this sound just ain't my cup of tea and i fear my ears may never recover. appreciate the political message and all but one is the only one that i can bear ironically enough.

Not for me

Was leaning towards a 3 because I can appreciate Metallica, especially early-ish Metallica. But felt like a long hour so I'll bump it to 2.5

Definitely more palatable in small sips. I just don't have the stamina for a full album of Metallica. And now that I'm hearing a studio album, the live album actually felt more suitable as it was a much bigger and fuller sound. Even though I gave the live album one star, haha. This just sounds so chincy. Like a ringtone version of a song. 1.5 stars

hass de hetfield und de ulrich lieb de kirk hammett. nai has echt nöd soo geil gfunde git e zwei. scho zum tiel cooli moment aber s isch zu hässig und abrupt für mich. de snare sound isch e tortur. kirk solos meistens zimli cool

Not really for me. I find it very tedious and repetitive with few highlights or stand out moments. I liked the beginning of One but then they lost me. It's probably not sloppy for what it is but it does not work for me at all. 2

Not my jam

This one didn’t do it for me at all. I like their story songs so “One” was a great miserable romp! Other than that it was a lot of well played noise.

There's no reason for THIS Metallica album to be on this list. Just like there's no reason for the S & M album to be on this list. This isn't the worst Metallica album (that honor goes to any album that came after this one). I still listen to new Metallica albums, hoping they'll go back to the well. They came very close with Death Magnetic, but James ruined it with those lyrics and his melodies. Also, this album would be better if the bass was audible.

Metallica is the sleepiest metal. One is the best song on this album but there's so much better out there. The best of Metallica is when they do slightly classical-direction riffs but they aren't a tenth as good as their popularity claims.

Starts off a bit off putting. This is tricky. They sound so silly at this point. No one needs to listen to this before they die, but they could. One is alright and a couple of songs have some good bits I could maybe see listening to this when you need to do a bunch of digging.

Meh. Very...Metallica

I’m torn because on one hand I love the guitars and the drums but on the other hand I can’t stand them screaming in my fucking ear. I know you can’t have one without the other so what a conundrum!

I've been WAITING for Metallica to show up- can't wait to listen to this in its entirety. I like Metallica as much as the next girl, but I'm not sure that this is their best work. I enjoyed listening, but I don't think that this album left a lasting impression one way or the other.

Some interesting stuff in To Live is to Die but the rest was kind of mid

me no likey :( metallica aint got it like that 2.3/5

I generally like metallica but this I didn’t enjoy that much.

I like One. I used to really love Metallica, but I only ever listened to Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets. I think this album is safe and boring and the start of Metallica's career as a bunch of goons typecast for the way they look and cursed to play sub-par music for eternity. Also fuck 'em for the DMCA. I love how dark One is, but the lack of bass on the whole album makes it extremely difficult to listen to and kinda exposes how formulaic the Bois have gotten since Metal Up Your Ass. The album is FINE. I've seen this album cover on a shirt more than any other album ever.

★★½

Not my cup of tea at all. This is the second Metallica album I've had to listen to and I could just copy\paste from my earlier review as they were identical listening experiences. No doubt, to metal heads, this is the business - bit to me it's painful and monotonous.

One // 1.5/5

This album has a very formulated sound which makes it hard to distinguish between some of the songs. That said the fast pace of them is enjoyable. The first one to break the formula is 'One'. It's the song I liked the most on this album and it's definitely has more dimensions to it than the bulk of them. Overall this is ok but not really my cup of tea. 2+ Stars.

Absolutely dreadful. No love whatsoever for these guys. Saying that, I think I once had lunch in a Harvester of Sorrow🫠

Best Song: One. The concept is decent and the guitar work is good, but it also really exemplifies that James Hetfield can't sing to save his goddamn life. Worst Song: To Live Is To Die. Holy shit that transition from the acoustic guitar at the beginning is so ugly and discordant. Why was there not even an attempt to align the tempo or timing of the incoming and outgoing tracks? It's just a wholly different, incompatible song. Overall: Metallica proving once again that they're the kings of bloat. The album is too full of songs that are always at least 50% longer than they need to be. Combined with that classically plodding Metallica rhythm, listening to this album is an exercise in wishing they'd hurry up and get on with it.

Quite subdued for a Metallica album it seemed.

the album wasn’t bad, but it felt a bit slow and repetitive and overall was just a bit boring

Metallica is sort of a weird band to me because I absolutely love Ride the Lightning and see that as the peak of thrash metal, but the rest of their material tends to lean much harder into rock than metal, resulting in a sound sort of like Guns ‘n’ Roses but just not as pleasing to my ears. Maybe it’s that their singer isn’t as good as Iron Maiden’s but also not as gritty as Judas Priest's (for example). I do enjoy Master of Puppets and some individual tracks from many of Metallica’s other albums, but …And Justice for All really just doesn’t do much for me. I had the pleasure of seeing Metallica play once, and their fans seem to be a really weird mix of counter-culture and current or former military. Not groups of people you usually see hanging out together, so I guess props to the band for appealing to such a wide variety of people.

I hate metal so fucking much. This makes me want to punch my girlfriend and drive drunk on the freeway

I just never "got" metallica

01) Blackened - 5,0 02) ...And Justice For All - 5,0 03) Eye Of The Beholder - 5,0 04) One - 7,0 05) The Shortest Straw - 5,0 06) Harvester Of Sorrow 5,0 07) The Frayed Ends of Sanity - 4,0 08) To Live Is to Die - 7,0 09) Dyers Eve - 4,0 TOTAL: 5,22 (52/100) Jeez, can these songs be any longer? Metallica was huge when I was a teenager but I never saw the appeal. Sure, I loved "Nothing Else Matters" or "Unforgiven" but never bothered to listen to the albums. It was a good decision because I really didn't like this one. It's all about the riffs? Really? Because I don't get it. It's just boring guitars, annoying drums, and no melody to be found. And here comes another nine and half minutes of riffs... "One" sounds OK. "To Live Is To Die" sounds interesting. Because of those two songs, I will give it two stars, but just barely...

A lot better than I thought it was going to be!

Memories of all the metal fans at school! I've never tried to listen to Metallica properly and I had to really battle with my prejudices about the genre to listen to this all the way through. The tracks are SO LONG and pompous.... proper rock songs should be two/three minutes long surely. 2/5 stars for me BUT the last two minutes of 'One' are amazing, incredibly exhilarating! I liked 'Harvester of Sorrow' too and the Wizard of Oz bit on 'Frayed Ends of Sanity'.

Metallica is a bit too "heavy" for me. Not my cup of tea.

D+ Blackened 2 ...And Justice For All 2 Eye Of The Beholder 2 One 2 The Shortest Straw 2 Harvester Of Sorrow 1 The Frayed Ends Of Sanity 1 To Live Is To Die 1 Dyers Eve 2 So repetitive and boring. Shiv can go f*** himself.

pilana. Intro od One je jeben

Not really my thing

3/10 - Songs all meshed together since they were similar. They were also all quite long. I do not like the screamish vocals. The Frayed Ends of Sanity has the O-RE-O part from Wreck it Ralph in it.

Never really been into metal, thought that maybe this album would change that seeing as Metallica is one of the most acclaimed and famous bands of all time. There was some cool stuff, but I didn’t really enjoy listening to it 4/10

Not too bad an album, but not something to listen to on a regular basis.

The main issues for me is the lack of bottom end making the mix tinny and the nagging feeling that I'm listening to what I can only describe as corporate rock. The band are rich pickings for a Simpsons episode. Now where's my custom made Metallica air guitar 🎸..........

Im sure 8f you like this sorta thing its great, just doesnt do it for me!

Liked bits of this more than I remembered, but still far too long and got a bit too repetitive so by the end I was bored and had switched off.

Shouty shouty men are very cross about something. They probably need a hug, then they'll feel better.

ok boomer

Hardrock/Metall, 1988 -> 1-2

I understand what people like about it, and I feel it as well in some sections- particularly on One. I did generally enjoy that song, and understand why it was the hit. But I found everything to be too long and too much; it kind of drowned me out. But the vibes were cool, just not for me.

2.5 ish.

Sounds under-developed when compared to later stuff.

It's good, but One is the only real standout song to me. To Live Is To Die is also good. Everything else is really just OK.

I vowed to never get an album someone else loved a 1. This is testing me. I did listen, hoping to find something I cared about. But nope I loathe this band and their music. 2, but really 1

Songs would start with a cool instrumental then inevitably turn into a Metallica song Whatever

This is like Spinal Tap. Without the humour.

Not my thing overall. Like the track "One" but still find it hard to listen to a whole album!

I get it. This is an iconic metal record with gravitas in contrast to other 80s hair metal ratt poisons. I am far from qualified to suggest anyone else who did the ka-chunk-chunk-brrrr motif better before... than... hmm... Black Sabbath... or Motörhead, or Judas Priest, or Scorpions... or later Pantera, or Ministry, or Rammstein. Far be it from me to comment on the quality of laying down sweltering drum kit catastrophes, but fucking Metallica sucks flaccid phallus. This was terminal, stage 4, boredom. If there might have been a more righteous Metallica record appropriate for this project, this entry is peak hubris. Consider a related later illustration where James Hetfield made a cameo appearance on 'Billions' and the two apex power predators pleasured each other orally about being vacuous leeches on the cosmos, bleeding out rock music with vapid, mind-numbing tedium. ka-chunk-chunk-brrrr.

I was never a huge Metallica fan. And I never listened to this whole album before. But it seems like all it is is screaming and speed guitar. There are no hooks. No melodies. I like some of the later Metallica better, but not a fan of this one.

I try to enjoy Metallica, I really do... I think I burned out on them in high school. Then Lars came after my precious Napster... However, there is no denying their talent and influence.

I didn’t think I would be a Metallica fan and I’m not

I like a lot of the music that came out of Metallica, such as Megadeth, speed metal in general... but so far on this list, I have not liked Metallica. I just reeeeally dislike the lead singer's of Metallica's voice. He sounds so laaaaame! I just have a visceral "don't like" reaction when he starts. He just sounds super douchey and I can't get over it. Nothing is bad, per se, just a pretty big letdown with the vocals. The guitar stuff is obviously fantastic, technically brilliant. But, even there, unlike some of the more fun and dynamic metal I'm starting to like, the tone is kind of "same-y." Guess I just wasn't into this in high school and missed the critical incubation period. Missed the boat of enlightenment with Metallica, and unfortunately now I just think it kind of sucks. My new favorite hobby is telling bluegrass fans that bluegrass and metal are extremely closely related. Gets everyone mad. But it's true! 2/5

I understand why this is a critically acclaimed heavy metal album. The lyrical themes and complexity of song structures are a cut above what most heavy metal bands of the time were producing. I also really liked a lot of the lead guitar solos. However, the predominant chopped chords on rhythm guitar paired with the snare drum became a little incessant for me. I also have to say I prefer a vocalist who actually sings, rather than shouts. I wouldn’t want to listen to this album in its entirety again but I could enjoy a track or two in small does.

I just feel like I’m being yelled and grunted at half the time. The opening to One was the only thing that stuck out in a positive way.

Surprisingly kind of proggy, kind of interesting, but the awful production, over simplistic drums and posturing macho man vocals ruin it for me.

it was fine just soooo not my thing

Not my cup of tea

Bland, formulaic, boring

Some fun songs but really kinda repetitive and just loud. Talented tho I guess

Some of the tracks started quite promising, some nice riffs in there.... and then the screaming starts... even for metal the vocals are dire at best. I was born with a brain and hearing... and I never warmed to this type of music, and never will. Respect to the drummer... he beat the shit out his kit like animal in the muppets. Metal not my genre.

boring

A few Instrumentals stood out as stunning especially 'One' & 'To live is to Die' would enjoy playing a game like Dynasty Warriors with that in the background But I don't think its something I'd listen to again - The vocal style just grinds on me

metalika moj dobar drugar

Half way through listening to this album I remembered that I don't like Metallica. What revelation did I hope to achieve by listening to this? The growled vocals delivering pseudo-dark imagery, the tinny drums dominating half of each track and constantly changing direction while somehow never finding a groove. If I was ever going to like metal as a genre (and I don't), I feel like this is the least convincing argument for me to hop on board.

I know I'm not big into metal, but I just think this is kinda dull.

Meh. I don’t dislike Metallica but it didn’t sound that good and was honestly a little heavy. Not my favorite.

Didn’t like it so much

Not a fan

METALLICAAA METALLICAAAAAAAAAA Ofzoiets.

Too much noise (except One).

5/10 let’s start this off by saying that i’m not into metal music in the first place, so i was already expecting this. the songs are way too long and in my opinion the repetition makes them feel even longer. i didn’t completely despise all of the songs, some of them were slightly more enjoyable but most of them bored me and felt blatant. not a metal fan but i’m sure there’s better metal albums anyways just didn’t enjoy this one that much and i’d say it was a meh album overall but i wouldn't say it’s horrible.

This came out while I was in HS and was popular with a lot of kids at the time. It didn't grab my interest then and did so even less now. Unfortunately, this album suffered from my familiarity with it. No "hidden gem" here. One of the tracks was overplayed and the rest were all indistinguishable from each other. By the end of the album, I was just kinda waiting for it to be over.

Not their best

I get it. James Hetfield can play guitar really fast. Outside of One, which is a pretty great song, everything just sounds the same. 2.75

Not my vibe

It's fun but also kinda laborious. Obvious musicianship but the songs don't have enough in them to justify their length, and the political messaging is heavy, dull.

I tried... but I just really don't like it. Metal is not for me.

This album did not deserve to be as long as it was. The same is true of many songs on the album. There were some good parts, some amazing guitar solos, but generally, I got tired of the album and Metallica in general very fast

I'm not into trash metal, because it is way too repetitive to me, and too energetic to endure it for a longer time. I get that why it hypes up many people but I don't like this genre. Hetfield's voice is recognisable and good, though, I think that's what I liked the most about this album. But otherwise sorry, not my cup of tea.

All the guitar bits sound the same

Ok I didn’t make it all the way through this one. I’ve never really enjoyed listening to Metallica but I can appreciate their talent as a band, and how they offered an alternative to 80s hair bands and pop music.

I never understood the appeal with Metallica and still don’t. I can’t stand James Hetfield’s “vocals” and even the overall tone of the guitars is too tinny for my taste. There are a few moments where I can hear some appealing music but overall, I’m glad I listened to the entire thing because I had always wondered if my limited exposure to the radio hits just wasn’t painting a full picture but no; I just don’t like them.

1/5 in and I'm pretty fed up.

Oh, dear, these songs are so long and surprisingly dull. They have no right to be this long, sorry, not sorry.

Surgical.

Look I’m sure it’s fine , but I don’t care for it

Just so not my jam it's unlistenable

Not their best

Drums seem to loud. Seems like a demo mix. Every riff seems to have an extra note that makes it not catchy. Nothing memorable except for one chorus. Bad album sandwiched between good albums no wonder never listened to it. 3/10

can appreciate the guitar solos but i'm just not into this genre of music

Not really a Metallica guy

I don’t like metal

don’t like them

I couldn't listen to this whilst working. Great to get house jobs done to tho 😂 Energising !

not my tempo…

I like Metallica singles but whenever I try to listen to them more I’m struck by how fucking stupid the lyrics are.

I don't like metal :(

Not my thing. Good for head banging but not for me to enjoy a listening session. Just not that hyped by Metallica. Manic and sometimes feels unfinished.

1st Album

This was a challenge to get through. Couldn't wait for it to end.

Having had limited exposure or love of metal as a genre I'm not well placed to say if this a great example or not. Obviously Metallica are outstanding musicians, the tunes are technically challenging and with no song less than 5 mins, no one is short changed here. Personally, a little too heavy for my tastes, but I respect the craft and the slower tracks like One I could see myself listening to again.

I actually almost fell asleep on the train and missed my stop listening to this album

worst songs: frayed ends of sanity (wackest intro), one (sounds like shite) + everything else best songs: harvester of sorrow, eye of the beholder Music for getting shitty-melody induced headaches - occasionally kindve phat.

All these songs sound the same. Vocals are annoying. How these guys have managed to last this long is beyond me.

Metal is a genre that I usually don't connect with, and that holds true for this album as well. But this is an album I recognize as being important in Metallica's history, and for metal in general by extension. The lack of bass in the mix is glaring. To me, the guitars sound buzzy and the drum kit mix sounds unbalanced. I think both of those would be much improved with more bass in the mix. Bass is the glue between guitars and drums, and with no bass in the mix the album doesn't sound as cohesive or as it could. With more bass in the mix, I would bump this up a star, but as it is this felt like an assault on my ears in a way I did not enjoy. To each their own, but this isn't the album that's going to get me to really enjoy metal.

I like the band, but not the music 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Well I just didn't care. I'm sorry! No matter how much I listen and I do respect they are widely loved it must be good metal, but does nothing for me

Just boring, didn't interest me. Put me a bit on edge when the drums just do loads of fast bass, it's not cool, it's just always fast bass drums.

Not my thing

I like the guitars of Metallica and that’s about it. It’s really a shame, because I can’t take James’ voice which dominates much of their music. It’s generic and unimpressive and… I don’t know, is he trying to sound scary? I get that it’s the metal and all that, but I feel like this is phony most of the time. And Lars’ drumming is so overconfident - just pounding the same basic riffs over and over again with that completely useless double bass pedal… I used to love a lot of these songs and just outgrew them. Sad. But can’t do it.

'One' is a ripper of a song, nothing else razzed me. Light 2.5/5

You like hearing the same song repeated 9 times? Listen to this then!!! Also it sounds like shit. Seriously how did people find this music hard? I was literally laughing through some songs as if it is some kinda joke. It's just so LAME. I don't really enjoy metal but at least some of the other albums had something at least trying to be interesting. Even the other Metallica albums were more interesting than this.

I don't enjoy metal, but I enjoy Metallica more than most metal.

I understand Metallica are a iconic metal band but the layout for each song so predictable they are blend together... Excluding One I would struggle to identify any other song.

God this was so boring. This is one of the greatest bands ever? Every song sounded identical and equally shit

Not a fan of this one.

I like the sound - for a couple songs. But a whole album? Tends to sound all the same.

A fine listen. Nothing remarkable, but still a pretty good listen for some classic metal

This is probably my favorite Metallica album so far. Still pretty mid compared to a lot of other metal though? Dude has an irritating bro-y voice, and everything is pretty flat and similar sounding. I might come back to 1 or 2 of the songs. Maybe. Probably not. 🤷

It is a metal album

Not my kind of music. One is was a highlight but the rest was not for me.

'Harvester of Sorrow' är extremt headbang-kompatibel. Tätt följd av To Live Is to Die.

Have already lisend I enjoy “one” but defently not Their best album, far from it 2,5/5

One is great but the production is pretty terrible and it doesn't feel as tight as the other stuff.

not my thing, but I like it better than comparable music today

2.4 I can see how this could be a good album if you're into the genre but it's just really not for me... And the songs are unnecessarily long Fave songs: One

I'm sorry but it's just nay pour moi

Still not really my thing

Chug, chug, chug-chug, chug. This album didn't move me when I was a metal fan. It's no Master Of Puppets. Fine for what it is, but too long and a bit too dull.

Every song sounded the same. Listened to whilst revising, motivated me slightly. Favourite song: the shortest straw.

In snippets, the title track sounds rich with Metallica's thrash side. Unfortunately, the recording attempts something much more serious, something that the thin arrangements and tedium can't support. There are just enough good moments to remind you that Metallica is a real band.

Not my thing

I do often wonder if I genuinely committed some time to Metal that I'd eventually enjoy it. It feels at least for me that knowing the songs and the lyrics to shout is a large part of it as the guitar solos and random stuff never really does it for me. No slight on the music. It just never clicks with me. It's crazy to think without Stranger Things no one would even know who this band is. Netflix you crazy bastards you've done it again!

i just can’t get into metallica, it’s supposed to be heavy but it’s not, some of the riffs are kind of cool but it’s just not enough plus the lyrics are not good

Not for me.

Int så bra!! Gilla int trummorna alls!!

This album is used as a punchline for it’s infamous bass mix. Really though, that isn’t the main issue with the album. The main issue that it isn’t well-written or interesting. Listening this only affirmed my bias that, the longer Metallica went without Dave Mustaine, the worse their writing got. Also, for all the talk of the bass mix, the drums don’t sound good either. The snare lacks most any punch, and the bass drum has this ugly thump that metal bands inexplicably agreed to being how a bass drum should sound. This is not necessary listening, reading about it as a footnote in Metallica’s career is enough. Except Dyers Eve. I like Dyers Eve

This was not my thing at all. Other than One, all the songs sound the same and are, frankly, boring. I just don't think I like metal (or more specificially, don't like Thrash metal) Oh, and the mix is terrible. Drums sound like shit and there is no bass at all.

If I were to rank all of the artists in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, I'd put Metallica in the bottom ten. They wouldn't be dead last, only because I've been told Bon Jovi was somehow elected to the Hall. This exercise of listening to an album a day for over two years now has shown me that Metallica is an extremely overrated band. That doesn't even take into account how the band whined and complained about Napster to the point where we stopped getting free MP3’s. I guess "One" is OK, but Christ, Scorsese's The Irishman felt shorter. No wonder Jethro Tull won the Grammy instead of this album. These fuckers never should have stopped drinking.

I felt that the album was very well made and well produced, but it's just not what I like listening to. I thought To Live and To Die was interesting since it was different than the rest.

...and justice for dva.

Jesus, this album is just exhausting. And it sounds _bad_. Apparently, Lars and James now claim that the dry, clicky drums and complete lack of bass were deliberate choices. Or maybe they were an accident, having trashed their hearing touring. Or maybe it was out of spite to make newly recruited bass player Jason Newstead inaudible. Does it matter why? It was a bad choice and all of the potential reasons are bad. It has always amazed me that James Hetfield has managed to drag three mediocre musicians into superstardom, against all the odds. I really struggled to get through this album. I know that my mate Tim and I used to listen to it when it first came out, but, apart from 'One', I had no memories of this record. Not one memorable song. And, having just listened to it afresh, I still can't remember any of the songs, apart from 'One'. I am so tired.... No more 80s metal, please...

I thought this was ok, but there is a bit of a cringe factor for me with Metallica. I much prefer Master of Puppets and the Black Album. I agree with the reviews that mention the bad mixing, the band sound like they're playing inside of a tin can. The only songs that stick out to me are "One" and "Harvester of Sorrow". I think I read somewhere that they have 4 albums in this book, too many! Master of Puppets and the Black Album would suffice. They could have included two other metal artists instead. No Tool albums in this book, really!?

I am afraid this leaves me quite cold. The groaning guitars, the strangled vocals, the over-intrusive drums and the over-long guitar solos just does nothing for me.

inte alls lika bra som mr black

I always wondered if I was being unfair to them. Turns out they really aren't my cup of tea. There were moments of melody that were then killed by fast fast fast slow slow slow etc

Couldn’t even finish listening to it. I found it not as good. It seems as though the main concentration on the album were riffs, thereby causing the entire composition of the album to lose form. It also sounds flat and quite boring to listen to.

Not my favorite Metallica album to be honest, I'm more of a fan of the latest work of Metallica than the starting work they did. Definitely incredible songs, but its neither my favorite genre or group.

De har bättre.

…And Metallica for some (just not me)

Don’t really like Metallica we’ll see how this goes Blackened: guitar nice at the start then the kit shits on it justice for all: also kinda shit

It's just too much of everything. 1 extra star for the guitar solos

My research indicates that this is the first of 4 Metallic albums we'll be sent!! Even though 1001 tells me I hate every type of metal (not true - I like metal from the heyday of metal, back when these guys were still in diapers), I will try to be objective in my analysis. There are some wicked riffs, very clean and precise, especially in One and it's easy to see how teenagers from the 80s would want to make this music there own. Also I'm hearing the early roots of grunge, my second least favourite genre. The vocals are a downer. I've read that this LP lost the Best Hard Rock/Metal Grammy to Jethro Tull, possibly the greatest Grammy upset of all time. So I listened to "Crest of a Knave" and, though I lost interest in JT in the early 70s, preferred it to this.

Just a bit too much metal in Metallica for me I'm afraid.

I had just read a story from The Guardian entitled “World close to ‘irreversible’ climate breakdown, warn major studies” and then started my first listen of this. Right on cue Blackened put a boot on my soul and ground in the depression. The message was right on cue. Unfortunately the message was delivered in the noodly, rambly, grinding Metallica style that really turns me off. All the talent on display here is lost on me when I can’t connect to any hooks or structure. It all becomes very tedious. This was an exercise in endurance. Some guitar solos that I appreciated here and there, and even a few bits of respite with some pleasant acoustic playing, but by the end my ears were numb and I was just glad it was over.

First Metallica album…kinda boring? Not into it.

Heard it before?: just the once but that was 10+ years ago Enjoy it?: I did in some aspects, I appreciate Metallica for what they are but I just don’t feel like songs need to be long for the entire run time of a project, I don’t mind long songs but they need substance and a sort of buildup or something to blow you away which is a hard thing to when your shortest track on an album is 5 minutes long, immaculate drums and guitar as ever but just loses a lot when you have songs running for so long they sound almost looped at points? Favourite song: Track 4 - One

I like One Metallica song, but afterhalf an album I get real tired of it. Feels so forced.

Not that good

one review on Allmusic states, "the apocalyptic lyrical portrait of a society in decay"... that is really really very deep. The music really gets your heart going, and they're one of the pioneers of the sound. However, I struggle to understand the lyrics a lot of the time. But that's the intent?

DNF terrible voice

Not my type of genre, but can understand why some might like it. Rhythm was the same throughout the songs.

Yeah, maybe not my kinda thing. I appreciate the themes and complexity of the music - good stuff - but there's only so long I can allow my ears to bleed. I have heard and like some other Metallica songs, but I'm not really into this kind of thrash / heavy metal, so this album doesn't really do it for me. Stand out tracks: One, Harvester of Sorrow.

Bar a few songs, not a Metallica fan. I like my metal but they just bore me. So here we go. 1 track in, in danger of bouncing off immediately. Played to perfection, just not particularly interesting. Title track appeals to my Prog-livities, much better. Eye of Beyolder- meh. One, lovely intro. An intro as long as several Wire songs. One is one of the few Metallica songs I already like going into this and it's obviously one of the greatest metal songs of all time, Billy Corgan also obviously loves this song and Siamese Dream very reminiscent of it. So, moving on, what's after that? Lots more meh, it turns out. Was literally mind wandering then I heard the line "loss of interest, question wonder", ha. I think this is getting a 2 because I need to like more than 2 songs in an hour of music. But One deserves more than that on its own. Shame it brought it's mates. Ah, damn. Dyers Eve is good, right at the end. Still though, I like less than half the album so it's gotta stay a 2. Went back to Megadeth to remind me thrash could be fun.

One is great but the rest all sounds the same really. Gets a bit tedious over san hour.

This one had too much dugger-dun-dun, dugger-dun-dun, for my liking.

Don't bother.

Too long but enjoyed One again

Decent, didn’t really click for me at time of listening

Metalica just ain't for me. Apart from the odd song

Heavy metal is the first style of music I fell for, and it’s the one I always come back to. It’s the reason I followed this group. I have also used the term Selloutica unironically in the past. But seriously, why are there FOUR Metallica albums featured here? That’s more than Maiden, Priest, or even fucking Sabbath (all of which were my first loves before I discovered ‘tallica). Justice, with its sterile production and boneheaded progressive elements, is no essential as far as I’m concerned. The songs are overlong and half baked at the same time. I give it points for solid riffs throughout, but meh. D

Too thrashy for my taste. I am familiar with One. Quite liked a few folky intros and melodic guitar solos, but prefer more melody, stronger riffs and less angry vocals. However, I do like James Hetfields deep gruff voice!

2.4 - decent listen, just not really my style.

Not for me because I find it rather repetitive, but I can't say I've ever really given metal a fair chance.

Despite being a big metal fan I have never managed to get into Metallica, despite my best efforts. This album only acted to strengthen my overall disdain for the band. The production on this album is truly awful. Nothing about the mix is cohesive. I tried both the original and the remaster, and both sounded horrible albeit in slightly different ways. The vocals sound okay, but everything else sounds like absolute shit and I can't believe it was ever allowed to be released in this state. The drums are way too far forward in the mix and overpower everything else, and this alone is enough to completely ruin the listening experience. The bass is pretty much non-existent despite being sorely needed to round it out. Guitar tones are mostly awful - rhythm guitars often too scooped and muddy, lead guitar too harsh and brittle, clean tones just pathetic and weak. Kirk's solos generally don't align with the songs at all, and it often feels like he wasn't even listening to the same tracks as the rest of the band while recording. Mindless guitar wanking devoid of musicality. All that aside, I did think there were some okay songs, and Hetfield's rhythm playing is solid as a great big shit-covered rock.

I wish I connected with this more, as I know I love Metallica sometimes, but it just fell short for me. It felt like a less full sound that I normally hear from them--curious as to why?

metal metal metal 2.5

So, you put me in a rough spot here. Previously, I rated Metallica's black album a 5 - and I stand by that. For the genre, there is no better band than Metallica at writing, performing, recording, producing. They are the complete package. Metal perfected. So, yeah, their best album (the black album) deserves to be on this list, and everyone should listen to it. But - I also thought that would be the only Metallica album on the list. This album is long, egregious, pretentious, etc. Unnecessary.

Some interesting stuff, but not super impressed.

Not a fan

One is a phenomenal track, as they noted later in their career they were pretty coked out during the recording process and it shows in spots. The bass is turned wayyyyy down in the mix. Not my favorite of their albums but better than most.

I find Metallica boring and uninteresting for the most part. The only part of this that surprised me in a good way was the beginning of The Frayed Ends of Sanity where the Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch theme song made an appearance. And that lasted about 5 seconds. Otherwise I could have easily lived without hearing this. 2 stars.

The mix on this album is horrible. The drums are too far out front, there is little to no bass. This is what happens when the egos of individual musicians effect the output of the entire band.

Not my metallic cup of tea DNF

the worst 80s metallica album. mix sucks and writing isn't nearly as good as the other ones

This is the first time I've listened to a complete album from Metallica. My familiarity with Metallica centers on their Black album, fights with Napster, and the Metallica documentary from 2004. Was I listening to this album to experience the music or was I just trying to get through it? I felt like I kept getting distracted by thinking about a drummer who seems like a jerk, and a bullied bass player. Kirk Hammett has some skills. Between the lyrics and the delivery, whenever I listen to Metallica I end up asking myself, "¿What character is James Hetfield playing when he's singing these tracks?" I tried to be open. I don't think Metallica is my kind of music.

I can see why people like this but it's not for me

It's Metallica...

Ho fatto molta fatica a finirlo.
