I never understood the appeal with Metallica and still don’t. I can’t stand James Hetfield’s “vocals” and even the overall tone of the guitars is too tinny for my taste. There are a few moments where I can hear some appealing music but overall, I’m glad I listened to the entire thing because I had always wondered if my limited exposure to the radio hits just wasn’t painting a full picture but no; I just don’t like them.

Solid metal album. The hits are hits for a good reason! I was a bit bored with the first half of the album, felt very much like "generic metal" but the last half realllllly was great and I ended up adding two songs to my favorites!

I don't think I ever listened to its all the way through. It is fantastic. The riffs are cooling and Kirk has some good solos.

Metallica being Metallica !!

Metallica’s …And Justice For All is their fourth and most ambitious album. It features some of their longest and most complex songs, such as Blackened, One, Harvester Of Sorrow, and the title track. The album explores themes of injustice, corruption, and oppression with a dark, heavy, and technical sound. However, the album also suffers from some flaws, such as the poor production quality, the absence of bass guitar, and the tediousness of some tracks. This album is often underrated in Metallica’s discography, as it is sandwiched between two classics: Master Of Puppets and the Black Album. It is a great example of progressive thrash metal and deserves more recognition, but it is not as accessible or enjoyable as their other works. I appreciate the album for its ambition and intensity, but I prefer to listen to their more balanced and dynamic albums. Therefore, I give it a solid 3 stars out of 5.

Aggressive, not an 8 AM album. It’s good not great. I think compared to other Metallica albums this one suffers under the weight of how aggressive it is, you can tell they’re missing Cliff Burton’s musicality here. Still have some great songs though Songs of Note -And Justice for All -One

Something I never would’ve considered listening to before this list, I liked it way more than I thought I would. One is a certified jam, some of the other tracks are pretty repetitive and 65 minutes for a 9 track album is waaay too long, but overall a 2.5 rounded up to 3. For sure more open minded to trying out more Metallica than I was a day ago.

Metallica were prog?! Had never managed to get into them because I find the vocals irritating. Luckily this album has loads of deep and thrashy bas propelling it along (albeit too low in the mix), and lots of songs with minimal vocals, which meant that in the end I couldn't quite bring myself to put it off. The time signatures are also a bit of a revelation. I dunno what the answer is, really. Maybe I quite like Metallica when they keep their mouth shut.

Not the best Metallica album, but still full of commanding performances, towering monoliths of songs and a surprising hint of sentimentality. The album flies by without fault, even with songs gladly stretching over the eight minute mark, largely thanks to how dynamic the songs are. The arrangements are dramatic, but stuffed within an inch of bursting - just look at how energetic songs like 'Blackened' and 'One' are, not too decorated for them to lose the visceral edge of them. Just one question: why is there no fucking bass? The thing sounds like it was recorded in a tin can, and some of the weight of the record is really lost with the lack of a bottom end. Doesn't ruin the album but it does a damn good job of trying.

This album carries a palpable sense of grieving, with each chord striking a note of melancholy that resonates with the loss the band endured. It's a sombre ode, a heavy metal requiem that reverberates with the agony and the relentless pursuit of justice, both in a literal and metaphorical sense. Flawed, ambitious, unbalanced, creative, sad and angry. Quite special.

It's the kind of album that makes you wish you had the social confidence to wear a denim jacket with a patch of the album on it. But it's all good, because you're playing Warhammer later, with kids who ARE confident enough to wear such things, and maybe that will rub off on you, who knows? Oh, and by the way, "One" is really rad... it's about a dude who stands on a landmine, you know? Gets himself all kinds of blown up. Cool. Maybe I should grow my hair long?

Kæft noget fed hegn. Tillader mig at gi den her 5 stjerner selvom James Hetfields stemme nogengange lyder åndssvag og den er lidt for lang (havde vi brug for To Live Is To Die?). Jeg var jo engang guitarist i et Metallica cover band (=jeg fik engang 100% på Guitar Hero da jeg spillede One i expert mode), så det er nærmest mig der har lavet den her plade.

Would have been at least 4.5/5 if they didn’t muck up the bass guitar in the mix. Cool riffs and structurally technical composition. This is rightly called the closest Metallica gets to prog metal. Highlight: the machine gun drumming in the bridge of One still gives me goosebumps.

Not my thing at all

I like Metallica singles but whenever I try to listen to them more I’m struck by how fucking stupid the lyrics are.

I don't typically like Thrash metal because it mostly sounds like crazy people banging on their instruments bit there is no denying that Metallica are the masters of it. This album has some good moments and good music but by the end I felt as if I kind of had enough and was ready for it to be over. Which fits how I feel about Metallica in general. They're pretty good in small doses but outside of the black album they don't really have much I can listen to for any decent length of time.

Listening through this album made it clear to me how talented the members of Metallica really are. A well made concept album all the way through. The instrumentation, although sounding similar, has its intricacy's. I just don't personally emotionally engage with the music. Same thing happened with the Alice In Chains album Dirt. It just didn't connect with me as much as some other stuff. That being said i did appreciate the album and listening all the way through did give me a better understanding of their music. But I'm rating these off of a mixture of overall quality and personal taste, but mostly personal taste. Highlights Include: Eye of The Beholder One To Live Is To Die

Production is dogshit. Performances are excellent. Except for the bass. I’m sure the performance is fine but I can’t hear it so who knows. Probably my second least favorite of 80s Metallica. Still good, but grating to listen to. Every song is way too long even by Metallica standards, paired with the terrible production it makes it almost painful to listen to by the end. 1001 albums and I’ve gotten only ones I’ve known so far. Gimme something weird. I wanna hear something new.

I guess I finally get Metallica. Pretty solid album.

Some of the best heavy rock songs of all time, One by Metallica will always have a spot on my playlists and they keep that energy throughout the album. I will say sometimes the instrumentals lack until the end of the song, almost as if they remember in the last 2 minutes that "oh yeah, we're metallica" and start shredding.

Probably the best of the THREE Metallica albums that have been on the list. But I just find their songs way too long and the style repetitive. Like we get it. 9 mins of quiet to loud is just unnecessary.

Having had limited exposure or love of metal as a genre I'm not well placed to say if this a great example or not. Obviously Metallica are outstanding musicians, the tunes are technically challenging and with no song less than 5 mins, no one is short changed here. Personally, a little too heavy for my tastes, but I respect the craft and the slower tracks like One I could see myself listening to again.

their best album that i’ve listened too, with the best instrumentals, riffs, shreds and the chugs, and lyrics, the opening track going straight into it not giving us any breaks. their drums sounding really good in this album and not sounding like random snares. one of their heavier albums. and i also hate the government and the rich, they have political commentary going against how they should shut up since they control everything. and how no one has true has true freedom 5/5

Maybe i just wasnt in the mood for metallica today, but man, the snare sound, and the drum sound in general sounded so cheap and crappy when i listened this morning. Obviously I'm aware it's part of the gimmick of Lars, but the drums just sound way better on Master. I think I much prefer the other metallica albums in the book, and this album does have One, which is clearly outstanding, but generally this album is overly long and the long periods of instrumentals without vocals just seemed a bit aimless today. I liked some of the quieter parts on the album that come up every so often, but generally i found listening to it underwhelming, which hasn't happened with any album I've been familiar with before taking on the list I will give it a 3/5, but it could go either way depending on my mood

This was the first CD I ever bought and is in contention for the album I have listened to the most times in my life. It's not their best album but every song is possibly the best song on the album. One is one of the greatest songs of all time. Dyers Eve, Frayed Ends of Sanity, Blackened and Shortest Straw are simply some of the greatest metal/trash songs out there. Truly one of the best albums of all time.

Metallica has never really done anything for me. I feel they deserve their recognition and fame. They have good build ups in their songs. Just never really sparked much interest for me.

Metal is a genre that I usually don't connect with, and that holds true for this album as well. But this is an album I recognize as being important in Metallica's history, and for metal in general by extension. The lack of bass in the mix is glaring. To me, the guitars sound buzzy and the drum kit mix sounds unbalanced. I think both of those would be much improved with more bass in the mix. Bass is the glue between guitars and drums, and with no bass in the mix the album doesn't sound as cohesive or as it could. With more bass in the mix, I would bump this up a star, but as it is this felt like an assault on my ears in a way I did not enjoy. To each their own, but this isn't the album that's going to get me to really enjoy metal.

Metal that makes me smile

I enjoyed the instrumental openings - great drums and guitars - but after the vocals began, I kept skipping the tracks! Clearly a great band, but not for me.

...And Justice for All is the fourth album by American heavy metal band Metallica. This thrash/progressive metal album features aggressive and complex song structures, but little lyrics or chorus. The album has been acclaimed for its depth and is certified 8x platinum in the US, while the single "One" earned the band their first Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 1990. At release, it was Metallica's best-selling album (this record was beaten by their self-titled next album) and was their radio breakthrough album - receiving lots of media exposure. Controversially, the bass/low end of the album was muffled and is mostly inaudible. This knocked some points off from critics and the reasoning from production is that the band made it happen during mixing because their hearing had been shot from all the touring they did, so they couldn't hear the bass anyway. I thought this was an awesome metal album for its long songs and varying guitar riffs that let each track evolve into something different. It was heavy and fast-paced, but had some parts that were sonically slower and actually beautiful instead of aggressive. Any fan of metal will love this album and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

AJ: 80’s Metallica is way more scary than 90’s Metallica.

Rating - STRONG 7 Best Song - The Frayed Ends of Sanity (10/10) Worst Song - Harvester of Sorrow (6/10) Thoughts: Immaculate instrumentals from Lars Ulreich on the drums and special shoutout to Kirk Hammett for the incredible guitar solos laced throughout the project. The topic of justice was portrayed very well in almost every song, whether it be politically or via other angles such as 'Dyers Eve' where James Hetfield talks about gaining justice over his parents for his closed-off upbringing. Even though every song was over 5 minutes long, reaching up to 9 minutes in some instances, no song overstayed its welcome, other than maybe 'Harvester of Sorrow', which is an impeccable feat in itself. This is a GREAT album with flawless production from front to back packed with songs that speak out for justice through different means, making my introduction into metal music a very welcome one.

I like the guitars of Metallica and that’s about it. It’s really a shame, because I can’t take James’ voice which dominates much of their music. It’s generic and unimpressive and… I don’t know, is he trying to sound scary? I get that it’s the metal and all that, but I feel like this is phony most of the time. And Lars’ drumming is so overconfident - just pounding the same basic riffs over and over again with that completely useless double bass pedal… I used to love a lot of these songs and just outgrew them. Sad. But can’t do it.

'One' is a ripper of a song, nothing else razzed me. Light 2.5/5

A little more cheese, theatricality, and less going for the jugular, meant I was less on board with this than Puppets. It's still a very solid record though, and while the length pushed it for me I found myself grooving to a lot of pockets throughout. Fave track: To Live is to Die

I was literally laughing through some songs as if it is some kinda joke. It's just so LAME. I don't really enjoy metal but at least some of the other albums had something at least trying to be interesting. Even the other Metallica albums were more interesting than this.

Masterpiece front to back

I wonder what's more annoying: How people feel about Lars Ulrich's drumming ability or everyone else for having to listen to these babies whine about Lars' drumming ability every chance they get. Either way, this album was really great and so full of energy. Also maybe the most popular/best Metal song ever in "One". I really enjoyed it. 9/10.

I played this a lot when I was young. I still like it. On the other hand, I don't recommend this record. You had to be there when it was new to fully appreciate it. Master of Puppets was better. Most of the songs are too long. The singing is not that good. It's not very heavy by today's standards. Lots of people complain about the lack of bass, but it wouldn't be as tight and punchy with more bass. Favorite song: Battery

I agree that this is an album that everyone should hear. This represents some of the best metal of the 80s, and Metallica is an incredibly tight band. 5/5

This album sounds really thin and has some of the most unimaginative drumming of all time. No clue how this band got so big. This sounds terrible.

It is a metal album

First album that a got to review here was an instant classic. As a guy who used to imitate James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine all throughout high school, both in guitar playing and image, I am a bit biased when it comes to rating this record. It was a turning point for me and got me through a lot of tough moments. If you are pissed off at the world and need to release some steam, this is a perfect album for that. Everything has already been said about the flawed mix of this album. The bass is nonexistent. The clean guitars sound dry as a desert. Drums are too loud. Lead tone is harsh. Having said that, the mix makes sense to me and comes together to form a unique atmosphere of hopelessness, rage, grief and overall injustice of the world. Makes total sense that it was written by young men, who have just lost their friend. The riffs on this record are some of Metallica's finest. Don't think I've heard anything quite like this in their later work. The guitar tone adds extra power and aggression to the passages and makes them stand out in your mind l, compared to the rest of their catalogue. Blackened is an absolute banger. One is a heartbreaking masterpiece of a song. Dying eve has one of James's most honest lyrics. Shortest straw is a riffing masterclass. The record still holds up. With a polished Bob Rock sound this material would have lost it's honesty. Still, would be nice to hear some bass from time to time 😁

Lack of bass but it's Metallica

The first Metallica record without Cliff Burton, and there was a noticeable change. The first Metallica record i had heard in full was Ride The Lightening, the first record I owned was Master of Puppets. Something had been lost. The early albums were balanced and crafted. There were moments of true brilliance. AJFA doesn’t flow like the early records. Some songs are excessively long. The melody has gone and the quality had dropped.

Bättre än viss annan metal av typen Megadeth - här finns fler tydliga melodier och några få lugnare låtar. James Hetfield growlar eller skriksjunger inte heller på det sättet jag ogillar med annan metal, däremot tar han i så han nästan skiter på sig för att låta tuff. Det är inte heller det här albumet som gör att jag och metal blir kompisar på riktigt. Har fortsatt svårt för de mer upptempo-låtarna. Det blir för mycket att ta in på en gång. I de långsammare låtarna finns det mer tid att höra varje instrument och ta till sig musiken. 'One', 'Harvester of Sorrow' och 'To Live Is to Die' (fin hyllning till omkomne bassisten Cliff Burton) är bra exempel på detta. Bara för att det är lite långsammare blir det inte mindre tungt. 'Harvester of Sorrow' är extremt headbang-kompatibel. Sedan avslutas albumet med 'Dyers Eve' som är ett bra exempel på vad jag INTE vill ha, för mycket trash metal. Bästa låt: One. Fourth studio album released in 1988. The harmonic guitars are so good. The let down is obviously the lack of any bass coming through. The album just sounds completely flat. I'm a fan of an album full of long tracks.

Can you go wrong with Metallica? I prefer their 90s albums over their 80s ones, but this is still a solid album. One, in particular, is a fantastic song.

Probably their most progressive of their first few albums. The songs are generally pretty long, something they've picked up again since Death Magnetic but with 1/100th of the songwriting skill shown here. The big let down is definitely the production, without any bass the whole sound is very flat. What is impressive though is how memorable and fun to listen to the songs are despite the length, the title track is a great example of this at nearly 10 minutes. For the first half at least this is true, after One the quality does take a bit of a hit, but not enough to completely turn me off the album. Definitely still worth a listen but wouldn't put it above the two albums that preceeded it.

It's a Metallica album. It's fine. It sounds like a Metallica album, and I like it. Not sure it's groundbreaking, and I'm not sure there should be any more than one Metallica album on this list. Fours tars, because I like it and I would listen again and it's interesting.

It’s not my genre of music but I do like some Metallica. I just find the songs too long and too samey. They do show they can play in some places but then it goes back to the usual.

Harvester of sorrow, what a track. there's some cheesy bits like the start to frayed ends and One is the track everyone goes on about, but it's a great album throughout

Apparently this album has no bass, sounded pretty good without it. I’m not a huge fan of Hetfield’s vocals but One is a classic. It’s the guitars that carry this album. 4 stars

One is great but the production is pretty terrible and it doesn't feel as tight as the other stuff.

I never liked metal, or metallica all that much. I have seen them live, and that was an awesome experience, as the singers voice has become a lot nicer to listen to. I would never listen to this myself, but I understand why others would like it

Not Metallica's best but a good album nonetheless. "One" is a classic and "Dyer's Eve" a flat out fret race. Metallica certainly experimented some after Lightning and Puppets, not especially to my taste but I salute their bravery.

not my thing, but I like it better than comparable music today

For me this was the last Metallica album that I really liked. The first album was raw but had great songs and catchy riffs. The second album was somewhat more technical, but still had some rawness. The third album was far more commercial and this one is more of the same. To consistently put out four amazing albums without any real filler is an amazing feat. I don't personally think anything Metallica did after "...and Justice" stands up to this. I saw them on this tour, in Donnington Monsters of Rock I think and it was just after Jason Newsted had joined. He did a great job here trying to cover for Cliff Burton RIP, who obviously had his hand in most of the songs. Powerful and epic from start to finish. Easy 5 stars.

…And Justice for All, but Bass for None. As a teenager in the early and mid 90’s, I was a pretty obnoxious Metallica fan. They were the greatest band on earth, the band that mattered most to me. I’d stay up late nights in the summer watching Live Shit: Binge and Purge on VHS on my 13” TV with built-in VHS player (at least until 12:30, when I’d switch over to the antenna and pick up Late Night with Conan O’Brien). They’re the reason I started playing guitar. My identity as 14 year old was tied in very closely with being a Metallica fan. Justice, as us heads call it, was peak Metallica for me. It’s heavy and aggressive, technical with tons of twists and turns, and, most importantly it questioned authority - the long held past time of any American teenager worth their salt. Listening to it today, at 42, I can’t help but like it still, it’s practically ingrained in my DNA at this point, but holy fuck is this album longer than I remember. Maybe it’s just that time moved slower back then or my span of attention was longer. That there’s no bass on this record bothers more than it used to, as well. I get it and appreciate that it’s a homage to Cliff Burton, whose death left a massive hole in this band, but a lot of these songs would be better served with some kind of low end other than Lars’ omnipresent kick drum. About 40 minutes into this record, the sound of it starts to grate on your ears. In terms of runtime, less would be more on …And Justice for All. You could probably cut “Frayed Ends of Sanity” and the record would be just as enjoyable. Conversely, in terms of instrumentation, less definitely isn’t more - this record is all high end and suffers as a result of that production choice.

Great players, double kick downstroke

- One is one of the greatest songs period - Not my favorite Metallica album, but certainly a great one - Falls off a tiny bit on the second half but still bangers

- It’s almost effortless for them - Not a lot stands out on this album, especially compared to their other stuff - Can’t see myself going back to this one -3.5

Thin sound, strange arrangements, 1988 trans am and moustaches and shitty beer. Nonetheless, it's rad guitars, amazing lead work, TIGHT playing, and even the aforementioned 'strange' arrangements and 'thin' sound kind of grew on me by the end. Def a decent record.

It's a great metal album, probably Metallica's best. I would really like to hear a remastered version with the bottom end brought up though, super high on the treble.

BL: Metallica as mentioned in my black album review, is something I listened to a little bit back when I was first getting into metal but not much before or since. So it’s good to be finally expanding my mind with them. AL: I think in terms of the Metallica discography, this and “Ride the Lightning” show them at their purest in terms of thrash metal. I think this did less for me than the black album did as this didn’t really try to experiment with the formula. This is just pure thrash, and if that’s your lane you’ll love it but to me it’s not really my go to metal sub genre so it wasn’t the worlds most inspiring listen. FT: “blackened”, “one”, “to live is to die” 3/5

I expected something different

Not my favourite Metallica album... but I firmly believe bad Metallica is still better than a lot of the other shit we have had to listen to.

Compression, Compression, Compression! I love this album so I'm biased. The only reason it's not a 5 (not really, i just need to get my dig in) is I cant hear the fucking bass guitar!!!!! ;) "One" is an absolute master piece. Dyers Eve and Blackened are also amazing.

Never liked Metallica. Can’t get into the vocals.

Angry as fuck with very hit-or-miss drumming. not their best but DEFINITELY not anywhere near their worst cuz blackened and frayed ends exist. great harmonies and james’ lyric writing is at one of its peaks for sure, I also really like the proggier angle to their metal with longer songs and diverse phrasing of riffs and passages

Blackened, Eye of the Beholder, One, Harvester of Sorrows, The Frayed Ends of Sanity and Dyers Eve. Amazing guitars and drums. Main complaint is the guitar riffs just all sound the same. Master of Puppets is better.

It's intense and skillful, but still doesnt quite crack the hardness nut. If I wanted raw aggression I'd go for dnb or hardcore hip hop. I respect it, but dont love it. *Very* hard to work to.

My favourite metal album. Was honestly my favourite album when I was getting into music. Out of all the CDs my mum and dad had. This one for a time had a special place. I now look at my favourite, favourite types of music and albums, and themes and similar aspects are in this one. It’s like a metal genesis album. This is their best. Unfortunately the production isn’t the best. Apparently Plampin tells me they haven’t got the master tapes anymore so they can’t even remaster it. And that all adds to the concept in that almost other-worldly way. Metallica are a cheesy metal band. Metalheads hate them. Your nans heard Enter Sandman and she hates it. But if you ever want to prove where this band were at their peak (album before their bestseller, usually a telltale sign), listen to this album. Sot: Blackened And justice for all One 4.5/5

Still not really my thing

Chug, chug, chug-chug, chug. This album didn't move me when I was a metal fan. It's no Master Of Puppets. Fine for what it is, but too long and a bit too dull.

A solid Metallica album. I feel like some tracks here tend to drag on for too long (if you're not a fan of long guitar solos), but overall there are more good tracks than not.

It's Metallica... I mean it's fine.

My husband was very excited this morning when I told him that this was my album of the day. Unfortunately, I'm not into metal whatsoever. I can't deny Metallica's massive talent, that much is obvious. I just don't enjoy listening to metal. It all sounds the same to me. I did recognize "One" because I don't live under a rock, and it was the highlight of the album for me.

p596. 1988. 1 star. The unwanted hatefuck children of Van Halen and Motorhead (Van Halen on the distaff side). Loud, tedious and totally redundant. No-one needs an album of heavy metal with each track over 5 minutes long. Remember 70s prog rock and the wankage associated with it? This is the 80s heavy metal equivalent. Dreadful, shouty noise. One star for the guitar work.

Runk-gugga-gunk-gugga-gunk! Headbangers ball, through and through. Not my casual listen of choice, but the presence of One on this and the overall sense of rock n roll/ metal gives it a middle of the road score for me.

Relentless unadulterated heavy metal. You are on a punishing thrash ride from the first red-hot guitar lick all the way through ‘til the last.

I would give this 4 stars, but I'm deducting it a star for the horrible mix that all but erases Jason Newstead's bass parts because Lars Ulrich is a total bell-end.

In snippets, the title track sounds rich with Metallica's thrash side. Unfortunately, the recording attempts something much more serious, something that the thin arrangements and tedium can't support. There are just enough good moments to remind you that Metallica is a real band.

It's always been their cult album because of it's ropey production but now it's been remastered it has a new life!

Classic. 'One' is absolutely amazing and always will be. Strong selection of songs with the true and true Metallica sounds to it.

I do often wonder if I genuinely committed some time to Metal that I'd eventually enjoy it. It feels at least for me that knowing the songs and the lyrics to shout is a large part of it as the guitar solos and random stuff never really does it for me. No slight on the music. It just never clicks with me. It's crazy to think without Stranger Things no one would even know who this band is. Netflix you crazy bastards you've done it again!

Ive never really listened to Metallica before, i guess i was maybe expecting more? This was pretty decent, just nothing amazing.

It's more of a 3.5, but the mix really bothers me enough to make it a 3 and not a 4.

3 days apart from each other (thank you randomizer), I've given both "Master Of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All" a good few (re-)listens and have to admit that this one really falls short in comparison. Both albums, like 'Ride The Lightning' before that are built along the same premise: 1) Start the album with a fast and heavy song 2) Bring a few of the epics (8 to 9 minute songs) interspersed with some slower songs 3) Bring out one instrumental 4) Finish with a fast and heavy banger But while Metallica went from the Thrash to more Black Sabbath-like rhythms, the songwriting remains great, it's the tinny and empty production sound that really stops this album from being a masterpiece. Without Bass, without soul, without input besides Lars and James.

Not bad. It really starts to wear its welcome thin by the end though.

It's been a LOT of years since I listened to this the few times I have before today, and even then I was far removed from the actual time of its release which may have lost some impact for me. I very much dig the themes they've approached on this album but I think, for the most part, they've been done better elsewhere. It's an enjoyable listen, but not a life-changing one. Other than "One" - which is an all-timer song for me. But the album version always leaves me longing for the video version with the bits from Johnny Got His Gun spliced in. That version destroys me every time.

Crunching riffs, twin guitar harmonies and doom-laden lyrics. What's not to like? I would definitely have been into Metallica had I not stopped listening to metal in the 1980s. I found it a bit plodding and unremitting in parts and not sure I would listen to this much now, although I do like some Metallica

The sound of a band undergoing furious evolution. The riffs are still pieces of granite, the drums thud, the guitars occasionally wail and there’s growly vocals. The songs are a bit longer than on For Whom… and in the case of To Live is to Die there are slow sections that contrast nicely with the full on sludgerama that is their default sound. On this track, there’s perhaps a whiff of a new genre emerging, thrash prog. Mmm. The slow bits could be lifted from late-70s Rush. Elsewhere, as on opener Blackened it is all thrash all the time. Interesting that they went for a more recognisable heavy metal sound next on the black album, as this is the sound of a band both slowing down (the overall tempo must be slower than Master of Puppets…) and expanding their sound. Dyer’s Eve and Blackened are perhaps last runs through the faster-than-you sound of the early stuff before MTV beckoned. There’s even a thrash ballad in One: practically auditioning for a slot on Leather and Lace IV. What are they singing about? You know, world domination, injustice, terror, death. Going out with them must be a bundle of laughs. Unless they confirm to the old theatrical truism that the cast playing Hamlet are in hysterics all the time, while those doing a Noel Coward are throwing shade to each other non-stop.

Gets the blood pumpin, great hard rock with some awesome guitar riffs. Not my usual vibe but good for working out or to scream at.

Instrumentals were impeccable albeit harsh, not what I'm used to but with repeated listening I'd definitely appreciate it more. Lyrics are actually touching, contradicting my initial expectations of the album. Overall solid, but not my cup of tea.
