Reviews (page 13 of 14)
Guess it’s good enough to serve as quiet background music. But you can’t call me a fan of Drake.
Nice, simple, sombre. There's beauty in the stripped back, basic delivery of these little songs. Nick Drake has a voice does not carry much though, and perhaps that's the point, but it doesn't impress on me much.
Better than expected ! 3*
3.6 + Soothing and soulful acoustic folk.
Soothing album, really makes you want to sit on a rock and read a Robert Frost book while scoffing at people that walk past. But not much variety throughout the album, all the songs are good but sound pretty similar to one another.
I didn’t know there were any singer songwriters in 1973! I thought that was a new indie thing to get published on iTunes. Well Nick may have been the first of his kind but the album is so quick it’s hard to even say what I like about it. I put it on in the background and the 28 minutes flew by. It was as expected, just a man and his guitar. I even listened through a second time and it still didn't do much for me. I'll take Frank over this fella. The album cover looks like if Dali had been asked to do a rendition of James and the Giant Peach. I didn't hate this album, but I also didn't love it. No songs stuck out to me.
Enjoyable to listen to. Good voice and nice guitar melody. Very melancholy.
Soothing acoustics and breathy singing
It's alright. Songs blend together. 6/10
Chill ass music for a rainy day
Very chill. Album cover is weird.
A man and an acoustic guitar. Cool but I've heard better versions of this type of duet.
Not bad. I would only listen if in a specific mood
Good, but whole album sounds pretty much the same
Pretty good acoustic album. Nice guitar although pretty generic.
false
A good listen but will be forgetful later
1972. Key Songs: Pink Moon, Road
A lot of slower calming songs. I won’t sugar coat it, this album bored me. Made me sleepy.
I know and like Pink Moon. The rest of the album all sounded kind of the same and it got pretty boring.
Boring, same tracks a little depressing
folk bare guitar very bare very low dynamics guitar and vocals mainly from the morning is a good song, a great closer honestly this album is just too fuckin sad lol Lord protect me from this kind of depression cause the dude sounds fucking saaaaad bro. it's okay i can see the importance of an album like this, it's crossed my mind that minimalism is necessary at times and it can be one of the most tough listens if you happen to be willing to face some real BLUE shit head on. Not for me though. Never really needed folk in my life, at least not this kind. I think 3/5 for me...probably closer to a 2/5.
was listening to this at work and my coworker said “sounds like something you’d listen to so that you can drink a whisky and throw the toaster in the bathtub” and i didn’t disagree! i usually love sad music but this just felt depressive with no emotional connection.
I think I might have liked this album if the singing hadn’t been the whispering singing stuff that I don’t like.
5/10 - I'm sure the lyrics are deep or something but it's boring
I actually didn't finish it somehow it's not my type
I thought he was Nick Cave, and he'd gone off the boil. Soporific. I've seen other reviews, perhaps it is one to re-visit, but coming in expecting booming dreariness and getting light dreariness, it did not go down too well.
Back-to-back Nick Drake albums should qualify as cruel and unusual punishment. With all the good music in the universe, how does this dude keep coming back? I’m really starting to question whomever put this 1001 list together. In summation, Pink Moon is exactly like Drake’s two previous albums in that there is instrumental talent present, but he is not a very good vocalist. I’m hoping this was a called strike three and Drake is now out.
If Elliot Smith took one step closer to the microphone … and recorded music for tampon commercials.
Careful what you wish for, huh. Dissappointing, I was hopeful for more and got less. Nick Drake and an acoustic guitar. Similar to the first album in that it all sounds the same, lovely writing but it's all so dour.
Sorry, but British folk singers are not my type. I find it rather boring.
Not as good as I remember, in fact I'm not even sure I ever listened
Not for me
Not being harsh ig it's was too slow although it was calming but too slow.
Boring and forgettable, just like the last Nick Drake album. Please no more of this....
I really like very few of Nick Drakes songs and this album has no highlights for me. He is a good singer, makes some good songs but this type of folkmusic is simply not my taste
I can appreciate the idea of just a man and his guitar, and it actually has some pretty good singing and guitar playing, but it just bored me a lot.
Saw this album recommended by countless people on socials, hailing it as a "must listen album". I partially disagree. Although not acquainted with much folk music, it felt as the album got worse throughout. Outside of "Pink Moon", and "Place to Be", there was nothing that peaked my interest much after. I'm sure I'll try this one again, and find out why this is an influential album.
waR MIR VÖLLIG UNBEKANNT
This was ok. Not really my thing though. Quite innovative in its own way I thought, but not something that really resonated with me. Good for what it was.
meh. reminds me of music I would hear on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack
I’m sorry but can’t help but get “White Guy with Guitar” vibes from this one There’s definitely emotion in his vocals, and from a technical standpoint there’s some pretty stellar guitar playing in this one, and the lyrics are interesting, if a little on the poetic side. I’ve said before I really don’t like this genre, and the more folk albums we get the more that belief gets reinforced. There’s just so little going on in this one, with it literally just being a guy with an acoustic guitar; not even a harmonica or some kinda percussion. The variety’s pretty awful on this one. Thankfully the album’s very short, so it’s not the end of the world; I’d lose my mind if I had to listen to an hour of this stuff I’m starting to think blues is just a straight up superior version of what folk aims to accomplish, where it’s more interesting musically and has more range. I know they’re not exactly the same but a lot of times the lyrical content and theming are very similar. Anyway I think if there was more than one instrument in this one I could bump it up a point, but I just can’t get invested when it’s so minimal
white man guitar
True "I see the vision but it's not for me" album. It's one for the fans of rawness and lyricism! I am only that if the instrumentation can match, but the guitar work here -- mesmerizing as it was for the first half or so -- gradually lost its allure as the album went on. Can't see myself coming back to it unfortunately! Standouts: Pink Moon • Know • Parasite
Perhaps it may work as an album for relaxation but the repetitive guitar killed my interest in the majority of songs. "Things Behind the Sun" is my highlight pick, a track that offers a much more pleasing intrumantal part unlike most of the other tracks that generally use guitar just as a static background. Can't see why Pink Moon is on the list; this music is not bad, but it ain't something you can't miss.
Found it pretty generic and boring
I'm finding I appreciate and respect folk type stuff but at the same time it so far just hasn't really been my thing. Good guitar work but I seem to be someone who struggles to parse the lyrics the first time around and that hurts me here.
Seen this album cover a lot. Not sure why, nothing that groundbreaking to my ears. Okay vibe for my drive home though
Did nothing for me
The sound isn’t for me
Buzzy guitar strings (come on, surely you’d sort that out before recording an album?!), annoying vocals, and all the songs sound very similar. It’s just really boring, not sure how anyone gets anything out of this kind of music. The album art is cool though, and I guess overall it’s not dreadful.
Unfortunately this just isn't for me as I don't really like the acoustic guitar or singer songwriter music
This is the album you watch rain run down your window to
wasnt terrible, i liked a couple of the songs but im not really a slow music person
Too much all the same. Was bored with it.
Nice enough, I'm sure, however I didn't really notice when it ended and Spotify started playing me something else. Probably the sort of album that deserves more than the background listen I've given it. Still, nothing here grabbed my attention.
Sweet guitar but monotonous
Meh beautiful but boring
don't find this kind of minimalist music particularly interesting... ok for background. I'm not much of a lyric person
Not for me
Me ha gustado!
(2.75)
I can't do it. I can't understand him. His voice isn't great. The music gets boring super quick. But it's not repulsive.
Good album but not for me
Pink Moon by Nick Drake feels less like an album and more like finding an old cassette under the passenger seat of a damp British car. It’s intimate to the point of claustrophobia: just Drake, a guitar, and recording quality that occasionally sounds like the microphone was wrapped in a wool sweater. The lo-fi production does give it a certain ghostly charm, but there are several moments where the vocals and guitar distort enough to pull you out of the experience rather than deepen it. The biggest issue is how homogeneous the whole thing feels. The songs blur together into one long, melancholic sigh, and while the album’s short runtime saves it from becoming actively tedious, it also leaves surprisingly little impact once it ends. Nothing here is offensively bad, in fact, parts of it are genuinely pretty, but it never really develops beyond “sad man quietly strums guitar in your attic.” You keep waiting for a track to fully grab you by the collar, and instead the album politely nods at you for half an hour before disappearing into the fog again. That said, there’s something weirdly respectable about how committed it is to its fragile little world. I can understand why people mythologize it, even if I personally wouldn’t queue it up again after finishing it. Solid atmosphere, inconsistent execution, and a recording quality that’s either “raw authenticity” or “demo tape found in a shoebox” depending on your mood. 5/10 album 10/10 cover art tho
Mehhh so so
High 2 star album. Love the stripped back vibe of this album, and definitely understand the appeal. I wish there was more going on, and I totally understand why there isn’t within the context of the album. It’s very cohesive, and tells a heartbreaking story when you learn about Nick Drake’s life. There were definitely some highlights on here for me, and I also think that the ending to this album was very good. Drake’s voice is beautiful when in this kind of vibe, and despite the 2 stars rating, this is definitely an album I would revisit and possibly bump up to 3 stars.
not really my style again, bored while listening to it tbh...
Mooooy low frequenciess, como que me deprimo, no me gustaron mucho las letras tampoco, medio pe
2 Nick Drake albums in a week, you are not going to make me like him, he sounds like John Mayer
Lowkey, peaceful, haunting. A little too mellow for me but I could see this being the right vibe in a very specific setting (like embroidering by the fireplace on a rainy night or something)
I found this album to be a bit boring it wasn’t bad but no songs stood out the album is very short but not remarkable for me
Boring, all the songs sound the same, no choruses, no variety in the instrumentation. I really don't enjoy this type of music.
Fine
Yeah it was ok.
J’espérais qu’une vraie écoute me réconcilierait avec cet artiste que je boude sans raison mais ça n’a pas été le cas!!
Average. Good effort
boring guitar singer-songwriter stuff
Not my taste
Same same
not for me ...
Important album in its era and has remained a touchstone for many folky singer songwriters. It has never really done it for me personally. Feel it’s a little one paced throughout and once you’ve heard one track you’ve heard the album. Lots of people have done what he did but better- John Martyn for one!
el primer tema ya no me gusta como se escucha. tipo el sonido esta raro, lejos. No me mato. como que es un buen album para tener de fondo porque no molesta. pero es eso, no genera nada tampoco (por lo menos me paso eso)
I know I should like this and I’ve tried hard quite a few times over the years including this morning to find a way to do so, but I just don’t I’m afraid. In no way terrible just doesn’t grab me. 2 stars. Tom.
Too repetitive for me. I like the tracks pink moon and road.
- Easy to listen to - Vaguely melancholy - Not necessarily my speed - Enjoyed 'Pink Moon'
Great voice, not into the "guy with his guitar"...
Mercifully short 🙏🏿
Not for me, didn't enjoy this at all. Not my type of music. Wasn't horrible, but also wasn't anything I'd want to listen to again.
Tunnelmallista mies ja kitara meininkiä
Beaucoup de mal avec l’album trop triste pour moi,
sorry singer songwriter enjoyers, not for me
Easy and quick listen but no stand outs for me.
All songs sounded the same
Pink Moon 1.5/5 Place To Be 1.8/5 Road 2/5 Which Will 2.1/5 Horn 1.5/5 Things Behind The Sun 2.5/5 Know 2.1/5 Parasite 2.3/5 Free Ride 1.8/5 Harvest Breed 1.3/5 From The Morning 1.6/5 1.8 / 5
Pink Moon th song, yes. Pink Moon the album, no. I just wanted it to end.
When a man’s sad, a man’s sad 😔
Uhhh yeah - very much an Animal House, Bluto on the stairs at the Toga Party vibe. That’s not high praise.
Yes this album is important. No I am not a fan. This, and I’m being unfair I know, comes from the genre of whinging pom. See also the Smiths and Morrisseys solo career. The English acoustic guitarists are tremendous - Martin carthy Davey Graham John Martyn, Martin Taylor, etc. and Nick drake fits in that tradition. Dude has chops. But i find it twee and dull. I’d listen to any of the other English guitarists before nick. But a lot of critics love him and he has a following. So yes. It belongs but the low rating is nothing personal but personally I can live without it.
Prima
bleak
Third album of this dude, and I can’t seem to figure out why. Not the worst one I’ve heard yet (Five Leaves Left - 1/5), and not the best (Bryter Layter - 3/5). This one lands right in the middle. Still not of his albums have cracked even a 3 rating. It’s bland and yawn inducing
Nice but pretty dull
One song or maybe two is enough but a whole album just fades into the background and nothing particularly stands out
Relaxing background music, but boring for intense listening
folky
fine
Leider irgendwie nicht wirklich was hängen geblieben.
Gibt mir nicht viel.
Murmured vocals + single acoustic guitar strummed to a low-fi/thin sound = largely background music
Annoying whiny voice and mid instumental, really boring for me
This was pleasant and short. I found it somewhat sad and depressing though, especially since this was his last album.
I had my reservations, this is labeled as folk/country music after all, but it wasn't as bad as I feared. At least this wasn't a texan yokel moaning about his life.
Favorite Song: Place To Be Least Favorite Song: Know I don’t get it and that’s fine. I don’t think it helped that I was already tired but this damn near put me to sleep.
I like that its short but not my type of music personally. 3/10
2/5
i didn’t think this album was my exact cup of tea, but it was really cute! i think what makes me stray away from it was the repetitiveness of the guitar. but my top three songs were: - things behind the sun - free ride - know
Just a little too slow and instrumental for my liking. Soothing but also just not my vibe.
Tracks pretty much sound the same from tip to tail. Soft singing hippies just aren’t my thing. They’re like bunnies in the grass… cute as hell, but just there to be eaten.
Kinda sounds like sufjan stevens. Very mellow, I’d have to be in the right mood to listen to this again
Simple acoustic folk album. Not sure I liked it so much but it did feel like an album to contemplate to. Like lay on the floor stare at the ceiling kind of way. It was kind of comforting although short. Although might not listen to it a lot but I enjoyed it. And saddened to read about the artist’s short life. “Horn” was interesting addition, no lyrics just a guitar. It somehow made me feel sad and contemplative?
Persisted through on the understanding there might be something that would resonate in there. Didn't find it.
The acoustic guitar was fantastic to listen to and really enjoyed the chilled / raw nature of it. The main downside for me is the depressive moans over the top. It's OK at times but it's unrelenting. It's a bit like Jack Johnson's dark / evil twin. Not sure I could happily chill to this despite its merits even as background as does become dull over time. Harsh 2 sorry as probably deserves a 3.
Unremarkable on the first listen, but some interesting guitar refrains, I get bored of singer guitar albums if I'm being honest. Could probably fall in love with it if I listened a lot, but it just seems low effort.
Bem bunda
linda voz, lindas letras, mas não é meu tipo de música.
Overall did not interest me. I Have always enjoyed single tracks by Nick Drake, but felt very bored after a few in a row. Rounding up to 3 stars because the production and guitar tone was lovely. Fav - which will, place to be, free ride least fav - know, from the morning
Can't tell i really liked it. For me — a bit too boring. Hope it'll find its appraiser. Album cover's nice tho
very slow, songs get pretty repetitive and the album kind of had a creepy vibe to it, idk why.. wouldn’t listen to it again, but I understand why some people like it.
Not my cup of tea
Quiet acoustic folk I'm guessing the lyrics are more the focus as the music is basically strumming acoustic guitar
This was...so quiet and slow. Really quite a bore to get through. Not good.
Pink Moon was really good…. I hate minor key folk
Thank god its only 28 minutes long. I accept he can play guitar, but he can't write lyrics for shit. If you make this type of music, you need to do better with them. No chance in hell this should be on the list.
Sure occurred.
Everybody loves this apparently. But not me. It's depressing.
I still haven't fully got Nick Drake. It's pretty nice, but didn't click. 2.5
I can’t remember what I scored Nick Drake’s last offering, but this was just meh. Boring. I did appreciate his dedication to songs under 4mins though.
a bit boring imo, all the songs kinda blended into one blob by the end. still good record to listen to while working.
This album is really interesting in that all the songs are so, so short! I don't know what a pink moon is, or why its going to get us. Why is the moon threatening us? Maybe a longer song would have explained. It was ok. I'm sure its playing in a Denver coffee shop as we speak.
Not as bad as I was expecting. It’s a bit much for a whole album, but I would listen to the odd song again
Guitar not bad, but singing is very monotone and... voring
Despite this sounding like my thing on paper, I thought it was pretty boring
I would give it 2.5 stars probably. If you would have told me this was from the early 00s I would have believed you.
Pink Moon - A lovely little song that is pleasant but doesn't leave much of an impression beyond how nice it sounds. 6/10 Place To Be - Great song to follow on from the opener, has a much more powerful sound and overall makes me think of the sound Sufjan Stevens uses now. 8/10 Road - A really refreshing song after the last two feels light and exciting with an interesting fast vocal delivery mixed with a truly beautiful sounding acoustic guitar. 9/10 Which Will - Fine enough acoustic song but the reptitive nature of the album is starting to toll on me. 6/10 Horn - Fun instrumental but also it's an instrumental made up of just an acoustic guitar. 4/10 Things Behind the Sun - Probably the most down right pleasant song on the album so far but also suffers from the lack of any movement before. 8/10 Know - Initially thought "wow what a nice new sound" then the song proceeded to be the most monotenous song so far. 2/10 Parasite - Pleasant but ultimately uninspiring. 7/10 Free Ride - Overall just a meh song again. 5/10 Harvest Breed - More of the same overall this album is seriously one note and has nothing to set it apart. 4/10 From the Morning - The final song and it's okay but this album just doesn't move whatsoever. 6/10 Overall Pink Moon is a very stagnant listen with every track consisting with acoustic guitars and fine lyrics. The standouts are 'Place to be', 'Road' and 'Behind the Sun' as these songs hit and create some sense of purpose. The rest of the album bottoms out in this terrible monotony. 5/10
Not my cup of tea
**An ok album. Most tracks sound alike, easy listening
Another fucking Folk album....
Vaggvisor är inte min genre. Fint omslag dock
Not really my vibe, but overall nice album. Very chill, mellow reminds me of James Taylor.
Pleasant enough but a bit dull
Not my jam. Just a man strumming his acoustic guitar.
Yeah not a big fan of just guitar.
great start, but felt too long in the end
I know it is a classic. But a bid tedious. 3
27 minutes, but it seemed like an hour.
This is the first artist I didn't know from this list and I am glad I discovered it. The guitar work is impressive, not necessarily groundbreaking but it is singular. All the songs are short, under 2 minutes, perhaps a reflection of the singer's equally truncated life. Place to Be and Things Behind the Sun were my favorite. And although I wish the artist was part of a band that had more instruments and a better singer, I can still appreciate the minimalist approach of only using a guitar to carry you throughout the entirety of the album's runtime.
I’m pretty familiar with this album. I discovered it a couple years ago and listened to it a few times. Although I like what he does and I love his voice, this album has always felt unfinished to me. And considering he lived another two years after this album‘s release, I don’t really understand. There are a lot of mis-strummed cords, meandering, guitars, and quick little instrumentals that just felt like warm-ups. So although I really like a lot about Nick Drake, I can’t say I like this album.
bra gitarr, gillar ej rösten.. inget för mig
Not my thing. I think something stripped down like this could work but it didn't manage to engage me all that much and I didn't find his singing all that good either.
4/10
This album was highly recommended to me several years ago and I tried to like it. Tried again now, and still don’t. I mean, he conveys his depression well, but he does such a good job it’s almost infectious. Which is a weird critique coming from a big Tom Waits fan, but here we are.
Was okay, a bit too melancholic
The Ray LaMontagne of the 70s, best played like a Bill Evans album, half-asleep on the couch. Nice voice, a bit too gloomy, with lovely melodies. Too bad the songs don’t build up, which makes it feel more like a boring fireside background album. Still, I’d take this over Paul Simon or a nasal Dylan any day. I sometimes even feel moved by the atmosphere, knowing the man would take his own life shortly after recording this record.
meh. chill. acoustic.
Very soft singer-songwriter. I just found out I lost not one, but two dream jobs. Feels mood appropriate but not something I would see myself revisiting. I don't think anything particularly stands out for me here.
Nick was a little down on himself despite a solid effort with Pink Moon. It’s mellow and a bit depressing. Things Behind The Sun is the best song on the album, followed by From The Morning. L = (1.0*s) Songs are very similar and short. J = (3.1*s) Album should have been titled From The Morning, it’s more thought provoking and more upbeat.
Alright list, we get it...you are obviously a huge fan of Nick Drake. All 3 of his albums have made it but why? Pink Moon is his best but it's more of the same slow, dreamy song work. I am not happy the guy suffered from depression and died at 26. I am however happy that there is no possible way there will be more albums from him to listen to (if there is a live one I swear). Putting Mr. Drake to rest with a 1.66 star rating.
Not a fan. 2 star
🧌
Yawn...
Felt like I was listening to Van Morrison. The lead off song was good but the rest all didn't really invoke any sort of particular feeling for me
C’est parfait pour dormir sous un coucher de soleil estival. À part ça c’est pas ma tasse de thé. Donnez des albums un peu plus entraînants ptn, et je parle pas de heavy metal de gros pointeurs. Merci.
It’s hard to listen to Nick Drake objectively - he’s overly revered and his sound has drifted into cliche land over the years. I find it hard to shake off those sunny evening campfire vibes and just listen to the songs. All perfectly charming, just a teensy bit boring. Fun fact: Nick Drake’s second cousin, once removed, is William D Drake of Cardiacs, who happen to be the best band ever. What a world.
Terrible cover. Relaxing music. Oh, he committed suicide. Ok but repetitive. I prefer Elliott Smith.
There's stripped-down, and then there's simply half-baked. Pink Moon's sparse arrangements and lo-fi recording leave me with painful flashbacks to my uni days, when everyone was practicing guitar at varying skill levels all time. The lyrics are so vague they barely register. Most tracks feel more like half-remembered lullabies than proper songs. Sure, "singer-songwriter" implies simplicity, but here I just don't get the appeal.
Nice folky solo music. Not my cup of tea.
..
"Pink Moon is the third and final studio album by the English musician Nick Drake" DO YOU PROMISE?
An album that I know is a classic, but I just can’t get to it. The melodies are gorgeous, the lyrics are undoubtedly beautiful, but for some reason - I can’t reach it.
Unremarkable
In terms of white guy with guitar albums its pretty short and inoffensive. A 1972 album that probably could be released yesterday, but only because its the worst kind of acoustic folk that hasn't progressed in sound in 50 years. - mitona
Esta bien...es cortito y suena bien pero ninguna locura
Thought we had some Nick Drake before. Great fancy guitars and well structured songs. Just too slow and sad and complicated for my taste
Meh.
Pretty soft, acoustic. Most songs sounded the same.
Relaxing music that I might never listen to again?
Enjoyed the melodies but the vocals were to airy and incomprehensible. (Not soft and airy like sujan stevens)
Pretty boring ngl
not my stuff...
Some interesting sections but a bit dull even for a primarily acoustic album
um, it's very 70s mellow
Répétitif
Evidently, Nick Drake is influential to a variety of singer songwriters in the 80s. I suppose if I listen to this through that prism, I can kind of see why this album was included. In absensce of that, someone who has sold a few hundred thousand albums in the UK and was never popular in the US, simply singing and playing guitar, is pretty unremarkable. There's nothing inherently wrong with this album, it's just kind of there. Decent voice, good guitar, but just that. In listening to Nick, I found myself thinking about Jack Johnson, who has somewhat of a similar sound, though I would much prefer to listen to a JJ record. That's not to say there weren't any good songs on this. Things Behind The Sun was an excellent listen. Some of the cadence of the singing in this reminded me a lot of a song I love by Jars of Clay called Truce, so this one I really enjoyed. Others were fine, but not much more. Amazingly, though only 28 minutes long, this sounded very monotonous to me. An average album from an unremarkable artist.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
It sounds really nice, but often I'm missing some interesting melody or unexpected turn.
Not really for me. Some decent guitar though. Some of these songs could work as covers
Was nice, but a bit too monotonous.
Put me to sleep. Couldn't find the beauty that everyone seems to be finding in this one. Is it the simplicity? I wasn't a big fan of Nick's voice in the beginning half of the album as well, it sounded pretentious, but it got better as the album progressed.
Singer-songwriter isn’t a genre I enjoy, since lyrics almost never mean anything to me, and the vocals aren’t usually pleasing to me. Following that, the guitar here is nice, but Nick Drake’s voice, with a slight but peculiar drawl, doesn’t do anything for me.
have heard of nick drake & didn't know what to expect. It was very OK for me. Nothing particularly unlikable but not particularly memorable either
Eh, it was okay.
Is he...trying to imitate Dylan? drunk? or singing with marbles in his mouth? All of the above? The only list this should be on is 1,001 albums to avoid at all costs.
This is not a style of singing or genre I typically like, and unfortunately I didn’t care for this album. The affectation in his singing voice turned me off to the rest.
Fucking bad
Die Harmonien in Things Behind the Sun gefallen mir sehr gut!
The guitar was too repetitive and the songs never went anywhere. At least it was short, but 27 minutes shouldn’t contain this amount of boredom
This started to send me to sleep, which would have been brilliant if I were listening at nighttime, however, not ideal at 11 am.
Unique but all of the songs sound the same. Not my bag
It’s doesn’t get more minimalist acoustic than this. Guitar performance was undoubtedly a skilled display, but the melodies weren’t particularly captivating. Difficult to comment on the songwriting as the vocals were rather mumbly. Still, a chill, relaxing listen. Listened to: walking through park slope. Favorite tracks: Which Will
Song: Pink moon This song is good i like the country music but the lyrics is weird and the album cover is way to weird Song: parasite this song i very weird and the lyrics is so weird so for the start this song is very very weird and the singer who made it gave suicide to himself so i dont really like him i think he is scary and creepy Song: from the morning this song is good this is the only song i like in the album that is actually happy when i read the lyrics but this is not a album i listen too or these songs
This just doesn’t do anything for me
get off his dick
Kinda winy but cool
Slow and depressing. Too melancholy for me. I could feel his pain.
Kweet nie, niet echt zo mijn stijl. Wel mooie muziek maar niet echt mijn stijl.
Pretty boring album. Only has one sound, and that sound is pretty generic/boring can't see why it's on the list whatsoever. Sad music for the sake of being sad sucks.
boring
I'm sure this is technically good and beautiful but it's very much not my cup of tea.
At 28 mins it was mercifully short. Still couldn't finish it saved by pink moon
This is another one of those albums that I listened to and never remembered a single thing about it. So, "unremarkable", I remark.
it blends in with the very similar singer songwriters doing melo melancholy music here. its a fine listen, but nothing that holds my interest or warants relistens for me
Before: I am totally unfamiliar with this album (which may be a bit embarrassing considering just how many streams it has). The cover art is neat and I'm excited to listen to it. I don't even know what genre it is. Standouts: Which Will Horn Least favorites: Road Harvest Breed During/after: My initial thought is how interesting Drake's voice is. The production is interesting as well, especially the mixing. I see the vision and I usually like the home-produced sound, but didn't dig it here a whole lot. I wasn't able to listen to it front to back without interruption because I was working, which may have impacted my experience. The album has a very calm sound and I can see listening to it while working or reading. Most of the songs on this record sound VERY similar to my ear (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I prefer some variety). Horn has some really raw and beautiful guitar sounds though and was a great instrumental. Overall, this record was not the genre I was expecting based on the cover. I was expecting a bit of a more avant garde sound. Overall, it's not bad at all but not something I think I will revisit. It's just not really for me. 2/5
4/10
Feels like the sort of album your dad would make you play on his dusty acoustic guitar. Rather boring.
Feels like this guy had about 10-15 minutes of an album figured out and just made a bunch of rehashes of a few concepts and released it anyway. Went from a 4 to a 2 overall the course of five very repetitive songs.
я на фоне слушал и чета нихуя не понял. но в любом случае это лучше чем боб дилан
Previously rated: Bryter Layter (2/5) Five Leaves Left (1/5) ************************ Why have three albums by this guy, his whole discography even, when they all sound the same? One man, one acoustic guitar, and some boring songs. I'm glad I'm done with him.
Legalzinho follkizinho badzinha
All the tracks seemed a little samey-same to me. This was enjoyable enough to listen to, but its presence on the list is somewhat confusing to me 2.75
Yawn
There's a famous saying that goes: "Never judge an album by its cover!" But we only say that to amazing albums with bad covers, right? I've never bothered to do the reverse. Not to judge a spectacular cover of a boring album. For me, the flaw in this album is the instrumental minimalism, which for some reason, didn't work properly to intensify and spread the message of some of the great lyrics on this album, which ended up being a complete waste in the end. I mean, the album is only 28 minutes long, and this guy still gives me a song like "Know", with just an acoustic guitar playing the same notes and only 4 lines of lyrics. That's sooo boring and tedious! It kills 2 and a half minutes of the album for nothing! Because of the good lyrics on most of the songs, I'm going to give it 2 stars!
Pretty boring
Hoped I would like it more, didn’t really resonate with me
Singer with a bit monotonous voice. Nothing bad, but nothing that excites me much.
More sad boi music.
A nice, albeit unremarkable album, you get to the end and have immediately forgotten it all, it's the album equivalent of Alzheimer's. As I said, pleasant enough but largely just the same thing from start to finish... apart from the song 'Horn' I should add. The audacity of Nick Drake to have any sort of guitar instrumental on this album is outrageous. At points on the album the shoddy twanging of the guitar was tolerable, when accompanied by the gentle/sleepy/borderline asthmatic tones of Nick Drake.. but on 'Horn', it's full frontal guitar at its worst and I cannot for the life of me shake the image of a well coordinated ape, crudely picking at the guitar strings like he's picking bugs out of his mates arse fur. 2 stars.
The songs all blend in to one another, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I found his voice and the simplistic style quite relaxing. Unfortunately relaxation quickly turned to boredom. Things Behind The Sun was my favourite.
Not good
This was okay.
почитала про Ника Дрейка,очень интересная личность текста очень красивые и голос у него приятный но лучше бы зашло как сборник стихотворений,потому что слушать альбом мне было оооочень скучно 💔
;)
01) Pink Moon - 6,0 02) Place to Be - 6,0 03) Road - 5,5 04) Which Will - 5,5 05) Horn - 5,0 06) Things Behind the Sun - 6,0 07) Know - 5,0 08) Parasite - 5,5 09) Free Ride - 5,5 10) Harvest Breed - 5,5 11) From the Morning - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,55 (56/100) Current ranking: 342/399 I see a lot of enthusiastic comments and I see a very good overall rating and I think to myself - am I missing something? Because I find this painfully boring, his guitar is so monotonous, the songs are as similar to each other as an egg to another egg. The songs run for 28 minutes which feels like an hour and 28 minutes. Two stars because I feel sorry for the man because he was troubled and died young. RIP.
I've listened to this a few times now and I really don't get the hype for it being one of the best folk/acoustic albums of all time. I get some enjoyment out of it with the guitar and his voice is nice, but I hate to say that I think this is overhyped because of his unfortunate death. I don't know just isn't for me which is surprising in a genre that I really like
The vocals are just too weak to hold my interest. 2 stars or D+.
(to come later)
Go listen to Gareth Dickson, he's almost indistinguishable from this guy. Style, voice, guitar. Wild Overall kind of boring but not awful
Folk can be a boring genre of music and this album is a prime example of just that. It all sounds the same because of his voice that doesn't vary in pitch and the only instrument used being an acoustic guitar. Like others, it's not awful, I guess. Just reeeeeaaaaaaalllllllyyyyyy long to get through despite being less than half an hour long
It’s boring, sounds like any other acoustic soloist. I’m sure the lyrics are sweet, etc. but ultimately whatever.
Didn’t like it. Same type of music my smart speaker plays when i ask her to put something meditative before bed but worse. Ngl i’d clearly imagine myself listening to this album several years ago when i was at my lowest — torturing myself with the husky sound of guitar and dull vocals.
It's like the author is a college student recording an album on his tape recorder in the middle of the night in his dorm. Hoping someone would hear it and like it. But I didn't.
I love Nick voice as I have said before, but he only made 3 proper albums and this is far from his best. To be honest I don't understand why it's on the list. Are all 3 going to be here? And if so are every Led Zeppelin album on here? Is every Frank Sinatra album here? I don't like him but would think him more deserving than Nick. Sorry, but can't go higher than 2.
I know many rate him highly, but I can't get into Nick Drake. It just doesn't do it for me.
This guy plays a nice guitar and he has a good voice, but everything sounds really similar and he has no edge at all. I think he wanted to be a poet. The best thing about this album is it's only 28 minutes long.
Pretty much the same song on repeat.
I've only ever heard the name Nick Drake in passing, never heard his music, I definitely thought it was going to a full band psychedelic thing, not just a dude and an acoustic. It's not bad but it gets pretty one-note and I can't say I love his voice. Yeah, this gets pretty monotonous, especially with his kinda low, breathy voice.
More plinking on guitars. How important is that art form actually?
Too much string guitar
Nick has a good voice, but I this album just didn't grab me.
He listened to The Beatles and thought they would be better if they sounded shitter
Another album by this guy eh.
This was fine, liked it better than the last Nick Drake album on this list. Got bored halfway through and went back to the NIN album again, which I didn’t think I would do but it’s really an incredible album the more I listen to it. It’s like if Slipknot added Johnny Greenwood to the band and they’d been listening to a lot of INXS while they wrote it. A million different things going on sonically that I won’t pretend I understand, but it’s easily the most interesting album that I’ve ever heard that has this much metal influence. Ruiner is a standout for me (that Skynard-esque solo is awesome) and Hurt. It’s kind of weird that the Johnny Cash cover (which is really good) has almost become bigger than the original because it’s a remarkable song in its own right. Upgrade to 4 stars, probably will never get to 5 for me given how challenging of a listen this is but you never know.
Nick Drake is like acoustic folk Radiohead - which is to say every song sounds the same and it's all dull sad music for sad people
Another unknown artist for me. Very mellow music. It reminded me of Robert Roseeka's music when I was up north. Overall, easy listening but boring.
Not my taste sorry
This dude mumbles in two chords.
i didnt have time to listen to this album unfortunately!
Bummed I got another nick drake already. I don’t fucks with this man
Mostly dull, just kinda background noise. Best Song: Things Behind the Sun
Okei kansikuvan perusteella mun odotukset oli hirveen korkeella ja sit tää oliki vaa vähä meh :( Ja tätä kuunnellessa sain meltdownin ruokakaupassa niin hirveen mukavia muistoja ei oo yhdistettynä, mut muistan et muutamassa kohdassa olin iha et vau sweet nii pitää antaa joku päivä uus mahis. Mut toistaseks kaiken tän takii ny vähä alhanen score.
Artiste inconnu. Très minimaliste, guitare + voix essentiellement. Je ne suis vraiment pas fan de ce type de musique, mais certaines parties de guitare sont parfois intéressantes. =>2/5
As soon as he started to sing I recognize his voice (I knew he existed but never heard anything from him before starting this journey with 1001albums). The music is great, the voice is dull AF. A second album from him is too much in this list.
difficult to understand. not my vibe. actually listened
Was unengaging to me, wasn't awful but I just can't see this being a necessary inclusion on the list
Won't listen to it again.
FAVO: Pink Moon, Road
Geht so
I don't know what my type of music is but I know it's not this. Favourite track: Things Behind The Sun.
1. pink moon - 2 2. place - 1.5 3. road - 1 4. uuill - 1.5 5. horn - 2 6. zun - 1.5 7. knouu - 1.5 8. parazite - 1 9. ride - 1 10. breed - 1 11. morning - 1
Indie chill, but I don't see why it's in the list.
I agree with one of the original critic's, Jerry Gilbert of SOUNDS Magazine, that Nick Drake's songs, particularly on this album beg the need for wider instrumentation and backing tracks. Also, all Nick Drake could benefit from dynamic changes occasionally, even if your subject matter is depression. While I respect that folks resort to busking, I don't want to listen to a whole album of arrangements that barely amounts to a demo tape. More agreeable than Bob Dylan albums, but still pretty tedious, no matter the subject matter. Well written lyrics, but I prefer a sonic palette that explores a wider breadth. Poetry is not music. Overrated by recent hipsters. No better or worse than his other album that I heard on this list FIVE LEAVES LEFT.
just not for me
Nothing inherently wrong with this, I just didn't enjoy it very much.
Meh
I just enjoyed it that’s my note
folk/pop music seem likes, really haven't listened to anything/any other genre else to compare it to lmao. Pink Moon is the debut song, but "Things behind the Sun" seems to be the best for me. very mediocre. no song really stuck out for me. nothing to base it on. Just mid.
Peaceful but not my vibe
Two stars for triggering me into remembering that I used to be obsessed with Garden State
For me this would be very situational. But they exist.
A cross between bear in the big blue house and Peter Gabriel. We don’t need an “at home” version of these.
The album was half the length of other ones that we've been getting, so I was very happy. This whole album was very chill, nothing really happened, it's like someone is sitting nearby and is just jamming in the woods (yes, you're in the woods as well, for this scenario). Nothing amazing, but pretty good as a background listen.
I know this game is very influential but I was mostly just bored. Didn’t care for his voice, the lyrics didn’t seem moving, the guitar work was fine and maybe at the time was miles better than anyone but now it just seems lost in the shuffle. Then again, I’m not an expert on anything so who cares.
Things Behind The Sun I’ve listened to this album twice. Some songs three times. I’m just not seeing it. I like the form and the concept but I feel like some of the songs are missing out on lyrics and leaves them dry. Maybe I’m too shallow minded I’m not sure. I want to like it but I don’t
Not unpleasant
Would I listen to it again: no Do I like it: no
Ni
Nice enough but not really for me
i found it basic
Very good example of singer songwriter that has a hippie association with it, but not my favorite atuff
I dont like this type of indie music. Find it boring and although the lyrics are good its not enough for me. To me its background music while you work or do sonething else.
