Very enjoyable listen. I haven't listened to a ton of Paul Simon but I've got no complaints about this album. Wouldn't mind hearing it again.

I enjoy Paul Simon’s smooth and simple sound, and I enjoy the variety of instrumentation through this album. However none of these songs I really loved, it was just fine to me.

It's always bothered me how "on the nose" his lyricism is, like telling a story. "Marc went to the store, and bought this thing, and he didn't really want that thing" etc... Kind of like a country song. Musically it was "okay", but I just don't enjoy listening.

Paul Simon is quite the storyteller, a quality that shines through in the lyrics in this collection of songs. Musically, there is a melancholic undertone in many of the tracks, but that doesn't mean that they are not listenable - quite the contrary is true. Yes, this album may not be a timeless classic, as some of the decade's more questionable stylistic choices are quite prominent. Nevertheless, it is never boring either, and deserves further listening. 3.5/5

Incredibly boring except for like two songs (Allergies and Cars are Cars) which break up the monotonous snoozefest. I was in a complete zero distraction zone while listening to this and I still don't remember a single note from the entire album, except for that cool instrumental section at the end of Allergies. Somewhere between a 1 and a 2. Depends how I'm feeling tomorrow morning.

Very good soft sounding album, easy listening with some very nice songs. But doesn’t reach the heights of his best work.

Not good. Boring an uninspired

Introspective and sometimes melancholy Paul Simon. It's fine but not his best by a long way. For me the better versions of some of the tracks are on the bonus edition and not on the original release. Simon articulates his lyrics beautifully, other artists could learn from his clarity. Cover art 3/5

Pretty good, thoughtful, well executed. I think Graceland is the better record. Have always graded Paul Simon on anti-curve ... that is, I've been a bit of a hater for as long as I've known what an a-hole he is reputed to be (sourced by members of his band).

As you’d expect from Paul Simon. Some decent tracks, but most is middle of the road stuff. Definitely dated by the 80s sound.

Quite enjoyable. I know who he is of course but I didn't recognize the bit hit on this album. Not bad though.

-”Allergies” is pretty got dang catchy and has some splendid guitar fiddly-ness -In “When Numbers Get Serious” he is seriously lackadaisical with his arithmetic. 2×2=22? 4×4=44? These are severe mathematical errors. -”Cars Are Cars” is not only straight facts but also a nice little tune -”Think Too Much (a)” has at least 2 cool basslines, and like a typewriter sound effect that is an interesting percussive element. -A couple catchy songs, but not much that really piqued my interest to make me want to go back to listen. Still overall quality music, just not really in my wheelhouse

Really poetic lyrics for some of these songs. Particularly loved Train in the Distance

The titular song is so beautiful. The soft picking of the guitar, the melody of ooo's backing up Paul Simon, the lovely rise and fall of the song's dynamics, it's everything. The rest of the album, I'm afraid, never quite reaches that same level. The songs are still good, but never as great. Standouts include "Train in the Distance" and "Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War". In fact, if "Hearts and Bones" and "Cars Are Cars" swapped places on the album, Side B would easily outweigh Side A. Seems like Simon had a few superb songs and then wrote a handful of filler to make the album.

Not a huge Simon fan and this isnt even my preferred album but still good.

Think his older work is much better

I enjoyed this album way more that I thought I would. While it was very folksy in a way, Paul felt very inspirational to a lot of similar artists down the line. Some of these songs felt current in their design but the lyrics were insane. A whole song about cars in other countries? I'm sure he was going through something.

Album number 2 from Paul. Feels a lot more showy than the last, I much prefer the simple singer/songwriter style. There's a good bit of that on here, but some more energized and complex production as well. But the songs I did enjoy were fantastic, especially the acoustic bonus tracks. Not an album I was impressed with as a whole, but still good. Favorite tracks: Hearts and Bones, Rene and Georgette Magritte, Train in the Distance & Late Great Johnny Ace (Acoustic). Album art: Not much to say about this one. Cool guy Paul Simon, watch out. 3.5/5

8th December 2021 Listened in bits on the living room speaker before seb, justo and Charlie came for dinner. Very fine Everyman songwriting. Personal and warm, I didn't realise he was married to Carrie Fisher which a lot of this album is about. You can hear elements of the African styles he would come to bring in in later albums.

Lovely lyrics and melody. Makes ya pause, think and feel. Loved the exploration of love, time, age, music, and identity/our never ending wants as humans. Was drawn in from the first song.

I like Paul Simon, and I have listened to other albums and songs from Simon. Hearts and Bones was new music for me. All of the album was okay. I didn't know what to do with "Cars are Cars", which feeling hung on with me by the end of this album. It was interesting to hear this album, but I'm not sure which tracks I would come back to. (¿"Hearts and Bones", "Think Too Much", "Train in the Distance"?)

I've seen Paul Simon mentioned in the same breath as Dylan. Do me a fucking flavour.

This sounds like Paul Simon was fighting the urge to not make a Schoolhouse Rock album. For all of his strengths as a songwriter, Paul's music suffers without Artie.

Pretty simple Paul Simon album. Think this album combines everything of his past albums along with a sense of ability to veer off with different styles and instruments. It’s not bad at all but it’s kind of middling between Graceland and his older hits. 5.7/10

One thing this process has taught me us that Ireally dont like Paul Simon hes mumbly wistful obtuse storytelling just gets my goat. The music is just bland and the whole thing sucks man. If this album were to a fairground ride it would be one that goes really slow and boring but still makes you sick and break your legs. Probably give you tinnitus as well.

I can see why this album didn't do well at the time, but these are pretty solid songs throughout. He just seems like a such mature and confident songwriter here. On the other hand, I'm also grateful that this album failed, since Graceland wouldn't have emerged otherwise. You can definitely hear him starting to flex the kind of muscles here that he explores later on in Graceland

When I first dove into Paul Simon’s catalog a few years ago, this was one of my least favorite of his solo albums. I still think it’s pretty uneven, but the title track is one of his best songs, and “Train In The Distance,” and “Renee and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After The War” are really great too.

I wasn't expecting to like this, considering this is the only pre-Graceland Simon album I never heard any songs from, and I always considered Graceland to be his turnaround. It's a pretty great pop rock album with great songwriting and good use of synths. Most songs are soft, but you have some funky dance tracks like "When Numbers Get Serious" and "Think Too Much (a)". Pretty average, honesty not what I really expected for Paul Simon. Easy listening for sure.

So, this was a surprise. If you'd asked me about Paul Simon albums, I could have told you there was "the one from 1975" with all the good songs and then "Graceland" in 1986, which I owned, and listened to over and over and over back in the day. You then might have pointed out, "Late in the Evening" came from a 1980 album, and I'd say, "Oh yeah, I love that song, too." So for our first Paul Simon album to be this one from 1983, it was a surprise. But again, such a joyful surprise! There's not a song I didn't love. I love the sound of all these songs. I love the lyrics. "Allergies" is such a fun song! "René and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War" is so lovely lovely lovely! The rest of the songs are all very fun ("Cars are Cars"), or painfully lovely, or both. "The smartest people in the world/Had gathered in Los Angeles/To analyze our love affair/And possibly unscramble us." !!! "Hearts and Bones" says SO much with just the lyric "the arc of a love affair." Man. Love this one. Love Paul Simon. Glad for this one.

This album is not without some 80s cheese and some of the songs seem rather pedestrian in their themes (Allergies? Cars Are Cars? Write what you know, I guess). But Paul Simon is a poet and a prophet who can write a good melody and some great lyrics. (I also forget sometimes how freaking funny he can be.) I understand why I missed this album in 1983 --- it was a little grown-up for my 15-year-old tastes. But this sure appeals to me now. The title track, Song About the Moon, Think Too Much, and Rene and Georgette Magritte... are all really nice pieces of music. Train in the Distance and The Late Great Johnny Ace gave me chills.

I haven’t listened to much Paul Simon in a long time, and was surprised there was an album from 1983 that I had never heard of nor could recall any songs from. I started off a little skeptical about a song called “Allergies” kicking things off, but I quite liked it. Nice guitar solo in the middle and I like the music and lyrics. This song was the most obviously from the 80s on this album. The 80’s elements made me like it more, overlaid as they were on what was unmistakably a Paul Simon song. Also as an allergy-sufferer I appreciated the odd subject matter. Settled in to “Hearts and Bones”, a really nice song, and knew I would be in Paul Simon’s capable hands for the rest of the listen. As the album progressed I found myself pretty much loving every song. Paul Simon has more unconventional subjects (“When Numbers Get Serious” is great, despite some questionable multiplication), all accompanied by interesting arrangements. There are two “Think Too Much” songs. Both are fantastic (although I give the edge to (A) as my favorite, but glad both are there). “Song About the Moon” is one of my favorite songs on the album. “Train in the Distance” seemed vaguely familiar to me, so I may have run across this at some point in the past. “Rene and Georgette Magritte After the War” is beautiful, Paul Simon is a wizard of taking a lyric like that and making it flow so naturally in the song. “Cars are Cars” was the first song that as it started I thought might be a miss for me… but by the end I had warmed up to it. Love the juxtaposition of styles between the chorus and the verses. “The Late Great Johnny Ace” has an unusual ending provided by none other than Philip Glass that I found was a nice ending to the album. I’m glad this album was on this list as I doubt I would ever have encountered this anywhere else. Great album I will listen to again and again!

Hearts and Bones is the sixth solo studio album by Paul Simon. It was released in 1983. Originally meant to be a Simon and Garfunkel album, Garfunkel left the project and Simon erased all his vocals. It was a commercial failure, but has been reviewed favorably in retrospective reviews.

Smooth. Too smooth. The last song adds a bit more urgency. Most of it just blew past on a very light breeze.

One of my top 5 all-time favorite song writers. Not my favorite album but still great.

I don't care what people say. Graceland is a stone cold classic. Parts of this album sound almost like a prototype of what was to follow. I enjoyed it..... but the followup is the genuine classic. not this one.

Very smooth and easy to listen to. I almost wrote that this is easy listening music, but to me that has connotations of being somewhat devoid of artistic interest and merit, which is very much not the case here. Nice melodies and pleasant instrumentation. Enjoyable. 3/5.

I love Paul Simon, but this 1983 record is a weird choice for the list. His self-titled album (1972) and masterpiece Graceland (1986) both made the list. 1965's "Paul Simon Songbook" would have showed another side of his work. "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" (1973) is a great and celebrated album. Even 1980's "One-Trick Pony" is stronger than this one, imho. Anyway, it has some good songs ("Song About the Moon", "Cars are Cars") and it is still a thing of quality craftmanship, because it's Paul fuckin Simon. 3.5*

This album was so fucking dumb but the songs were so well written and enjoyable. Truly a confusing listen but I loved it.

Easy listening, background music that's not overbearing and you don't really need to listen to that closely.

What can you say, modern Paul Simon. Nothing for me specifically to get my teeth into. Smooth well executed bland.

There must be some mistake here in including this album. I’d subtract a star if I could knowing that Simon’s next album was Graceland.

Garfunkel hard carried this chud

This is a curious album, kind of a bridge between 70s Paul Simon and 80s Paul Simon. It's mostly a very pleasant listen, with several standout tracks. Lyrics are always the star in Paul Simon's work, and the lyrics here are lovely, sometimes surprisingly personal. The collection overall I think lacks a certain cohesiveness, like he decided to throw a bunch of ideas at the wall that don't always connect. "Cars are Cars" is a bit silly viewed against the sweetness of "Rene and Georgette Magritte" and "Train in the Distance." But I've been listening to Paul Simon long enough to know he has a natural silly streak, so he gets a pass here. "Johnny Ace" is oddly bright given the subject, but the strings unexpectedly turn it to something richer and more thoughtful as the song and album draw to a close. Favorite songs: Hearts and Bones, Train in the Distance, Rene and Georgette Magritte, Think Too Much (a)

I disliked most things about this album: the rhythm, the feel, the mix, but most of all the lyrics. I found them trite and forced; I didn't feel the same flow as with all the other Paul Simon albums I know.

It’s the real Paul Simon sound, but not the best. The last 3 (original acoustics) are great examples how creative and unique “classic” songwriting can be.

I'm not a great fan of Paul Simon (especially his world music based songs), but this album was a nice surprise. I didn't know it and it's great when you want some quiet listening. Nicely crafted

Pleasantly surprised by this one. I'm probably the only person that is not a fan of Graceland and the influence that World music played in Simon's future works, but this album is lovely to listen to. It will definitely work it's way into my rotation. Actual score: 3.9

Very very very of its time but good. Maladies Melodies Allergies symphonies etc like a lot of these albums the music is carrying the singer/lyrics. Quite dated at times, "One and one-half wandering Jews Free to wander wherever they choose" although I get why and it fits with what he wants to get across just seems odd nowadays. Very easy listening. I really like "Think Too Much (B)" for reasons I don't quite know. I also like "Think Too Much (A)" also for similar reasons, very odd. very funky and quite nonsensical "The thought that life could be better Is woven indelibly into our hearts and our brains" is a great lyric but one of very few in this album. Cars Are Cars is another odd song but catchy. probably closer to a 4 but giving it a 3.

Have a soft spot for Paul Simon. Some nice tracks on this and some cool grooves. Will listen to it again. Was hanging from a roof when listening so was more worried my AirPods falling out than focusing on the album. Cars are Cars is a weird song. Think too much (a) is musically very vulfpeck. Vocally no, but the instrumental arrangement and mix is quite similar.

Couple of nice songs on here but I'm not going to be rushing back to hear it again.

Weirdly sounds like Meat Puppets in parts but is too polished and never veers from the center of the road.

Soft, bloated, unoffensive, smugly inane lyrics, about as much character as white bread. If he wasn't already famous, he'd have been laughed out of the studio (\"2 x 2 is 22\", \"cars are cars\"). Some good session musicians trying to keep a straight face while playing on this dross, but doesn't redeem it. Negative 5 stars, I will go out of my way to burn any physical copies I find.

I'm a big Paul Simon fan and even I found this a bit of a weird addition to this list cause it's probably not close to the top half of his discography. There are a few stellar track sure (the album's namesake in particular), and I did enjoy him starting to experiment with the sounds that led to Graceland. However, the album otherwise falls flat. Maybe because I enjoy other albums/projects by him more but it lacked the catchy hooks and charm that I've grown to appreciate from this artist.

This is “safe music” and you put it on if you don’t want anyone complaining in a crowd because while it isn’t special in any way, people are afraid to say they don’t like something Paul Simon has put out and don’t care for this pedestrian album. This sounds like an album Paul Simon’s label put out when when he has no hits.

I can't help but compare this to the pinnacle releases of Simon and Garfunkel and for me it falls short. Very good but not the top of his solo catalog either.

Very good. I mostly knew Paul Simon for his time in Simon & Garfunkel and his only solo hit I knew was Al. He's a very talented songwriter.

I enjoy this. You can tell it was slated to be a S&G album but was transitioned after Garfunkel left the project. I miss his harmonies, but, it’s interesting to see the trace elements of S&G in there.

I love the feeling of this album and how it's so soft. Both versions of Maybe I think too much are great but I think I prefer (b). (a) sounds like vulfpeck. Love his voice too, but I think allergies is a bit much for this album.

I really didn't like this one. The 80s sound on top of Paul Simon's iconic vocals really just made me wish I was listening to Simon & Garfunkel

I love Paul Simon's style. It very recognisable but still very varied from album to album. This would have five stars but Cars Are Cars was just too much.

Hearts And Bones tells simple yet striking little stories about being human. Although some aspects do sound a little outdated (e.g. 80's Caribbean flutes), I love the way the singing and instruments blend perfect together with emotion throughout the album. It brings together a lighthearted yet serious way of storytelling.

The song "Hearts and Bones" is soooo romantic. Very crunchy-granola-meets-simon&garfunkel. Some of the songs are a little gimmicky, the math one and the one abt the brain come to mind. but the love songs are SO tender and sweet. well done

In which one half of the duo that gave us The Boxer and The Only Living Boy in New York released a lead single about allergies, and it wasn't even the worst song on the album. Did you know that cars are cars all over the world? An awful album only partially redeemed by an introspective reflection on the assassination of John Lennon. Best track: The Late Great Johnny Ace

A little less world music than Graceland, but I enjoy it slightly more. Still not a huge fan, but some great guitar work on here. Favorite tracks: "Think Too Much (a)", "Train In the Distance"

This is a pop record which feels primarily soothing. I'm with Christgau: It never quite takes off. The string arrangements suggest it could have, too (at least for me). The writing seems solid overall with a hint of cuteness at points.

im gonna be honest it didnt even occur to me that music like this still happened in the 80s. like this sounds way more like some 70s bullshit with a couple synths thrown in every so often, which i guess makes sense because paul simon is the guy from simon and garfunkel, and i think most artists are always kinda stuck to the time of their peak to some degree. like in ten years i dont rly expect taylor swift to be at the cutting edge of pop music yknow? i dont mean any of this as a negative to the album, it just suprised me a little and the fact that this sounds like pretty nice 70s rock, with a bit of folk and strings and whatever else thrown in sometimes + a couple synths, is all i can think of to rly say about this album. its nice, its comfy, its kinda boring sometimes. cool stuff.

Ok, this is cooler than I expected. Some cool 80s pub rock vibes almost like aussie bands in places. There's no way Simon is playing some of these solos. there is a lot of American folky bullshit on here kinda like simon & garfunkel (expected I guess) and it's annoying, and there's a reggae tune and i HATE reggae, but I think it gets a 3/5 just for that first solo and not being anywhere near as shit as his earlier stuff.
