Reviews (page 8 of 13)

This is the soundtrack of after-church car rides with my dad. There’s a unique nostalgia I get from Crosby, Stills & Nash. This record starts off with epic Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and later includes the alliterative masterpiece Helplessly Hoping. The middle is a lot of, now considered cliché calls to leave the stressors of life (read: work, public service, and haircuts) and other counterculture tropes about hiding drugs and ingesting questionable berries while transcending planes of existence. There’s so much more bluesy psychedelia than I anticipated. Admittedly, the constant overlapping of vocals does start to grate on me, but I think that’s a me thing; I can only take so much organ and swirling vocal harmonization before I need a break. A lot of modern heady folk music can draw its roots to this album. I also can’t ever help but to yen for some “Y” when I listen to CSN. Hide your drugs and get in, folks. The late 60 had something for everyone. I appreciate options. One major criticism is the lack of an Oxford comma.

I really loved Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Helplessly Hopeless. Special songs. The rest of the album was a bit of a wash for me. 5/10

I can picture this record in my mom's collection. I was a big fan of Marrakesh Express when I was 7 or 8. Stills's bass playing is better than I remember. Stills's current wife is from Maine and her mom taught our daughter ice skating. All that said, those harmonies, although we'll done, get on my nerves.

I once loved this. So much. Can barely listen to it now.

To be honest, I've never been a fan. Too hippy dippy for me. Certainly they're are great musicians and great at harmonizing, but I find them irritating. I can't deny their influence though.

Big snooze. Lacks oomph. I have always liked Helplessly Hoping, though.

Fold rock folk rock

lady of the island is a gorgeous track

hørte ikke hele ass

fint dette men jeg vil egentlig bare høre zara larsson sykt hvor mye beatles påvirket musikk høydepunkt: lady of the night og da han sier six seven i wooden ships

Yet another band I know the name of but not the music. Very lightweight so far, quite melodic. Not bad, but more background noise for me than anything else - and I have a lot better albums that can do that for me. Was absolutely fine, but not a band I’m bothered to listen to again.

I'm liking this one - it's getting a 3

Danach nochmal 30min rumgedudel.

Pleasant, nice harmonies, nostalgic, feels like fading into a dream about life on a lazy Saturday afternoon. 3.4/5.

Good, but really needs Neil Young to just top it off. Liked the cover of Everybody's Talkin'.

Loved few songs and 'Lady of the island' was the best song of the album imo

I liked Song With No Words, but it's not my cup of tea

3 från mig. Mysigt, trevligt, helt ok. 2 från pappa, ganska ointressant

Some classic memorable songs. Maybe I was not in the mood but after awhile the harmonizing started to annoy me.

A little Muzak, but good for a chill walk

There's a wonderful nostalgia to the music and a calmness to their voices.

Nice but too long.

Very sumery, never heard about this band or this album so it was fun to listen to!

Needs more variety in song styles. Album comes alive when it mixes up in the second half. I will admit the tracking of the vocal harmonies doesn’t sit with me for some reason and becomes grating at times, but I know people love CSN for that reason, so to each their own.

Classic tunes

Love country folk as always

Not unpleasant but not super good either.

A couple really good tracks

Weirdly, I kinda liked this one

I enjoyed this album. Looking at it in context, though, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and other artists in similar lanes had already released multiple legendary albums (that I personally prefer) by 1969. I even tried to give it the benefit of the doubt on maybe pioneering folk rock, but I double checked, and Dylan was already well into his electric era when this album dropped. It would have had to blow me away to get a very high rating, and unfortunately, it did not. So although I enjoyed my first listen, it's no surprise that I hadn't been turned onto it sooner, and I probably won't be revisiting it anytime soon. Sorry CSN fans, but they were kind of sitting on the laps of giants here. Strong 3.

I liked Song With No Words and Guinnevere, the rest of the album was a little generic but still pretty chill. Wouldn’t mind putting this on for a lazy afternoon kind of vibe, but probably won’t go out of my way to listen to it repeatedly. 6/10, 3 stars.

Started hot, lost a bit of momentum but enjoyed it overall. Judy Blue Eyes is awesome. Was sitting back enjoying it not realizing it was the DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO song, goes so hard.

Not typically my favorite genre, but this is a pretty good listen. Some great harmonies.

Talented musicians hanging out

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes ❤️

Mítico disco, pero tampoco una locura

This is ok. The harmonies are actually quite good. I probably would never choose to put this on though 🤷‍♂️

Good vibes only. Good for a chill sesh.

Bought this a while ago, only played it twice or thrice, I can see why. Feels very over harmonised and twee in places.

Ridiculously good if overused harmonies throughout. I love the vocals on Guinevere, but Wooden Ships probably my favourite. I’m sure John Squires listened to this as well as Zeppelin before writing TSC. Gets a bit insipid in places, too nice, too hippy for my taste. I probably need to smoke more weed, turn vegetarian and explore environmental issues to get the full effect. A very strong 3. Not quite a 4.

Groovy and enjoyable but not sure what’s so special about this…

You can’t really go wrong with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Great album, but a bit more chill than I am drawn to for regular listening.

Eh. It’s okay. A lot of the songs just kind of sound the same. I can hear some Beatles influence in there, so that’s interesting. But aside from that, nothing notable for me.

It's okay. A lot of the later tracks sound too same-y. I didn't really like the sombre tracks, which there weren't that many of, thankfully. Favourite Track(s): Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Marrakesh Express, Wooden Ships Least Favourite Track(s): You Don't Have To Cry, Lady of the Island

This album marks a shift in popular music, reflecting the maturing audience of more experimental 60s rock to something more grounded.

2/3. Some really great songs on here, Marakesh Express and Wooden Ships immediately stood out to me. Their voices are great together, the guitar playing all over the album is great, and I definitely think this is an album that rewards being listened to over and over. There were a few tracks that just didn't grab me, and I found myself wondering when they'd be over.

Bit basic Nice harmonies Nothing special Some good moments

The average rating of 3.5 feels right to me. It's pretty good stuff, and they clearly have some songwriting chops between them, but it is slightly dull/tame

Didn't move me, sounded pleasant enough, I guess it's another grower?

I decided to give this another listen since it didn't really stand out to me the first time; it grew on me a tad. I think the people saying every song sounds the same are just hearing the harmonies, because the songs definitely sound different

This one will require a relisten, but I think I liked most of it.

enjoyed, easy to listen to.

I love harmonies

The start of the California sound - a true supergroup - they just weren’t that prolific. Harmony singing of great invention

Kind of mixed on this one. Quite a few songs I enjoyed more than I ever did while listening to the songs driving around in the back seat as a kid. Some of the tracks like "Marrakesh Express", "Guinnevere", and "Lady of the Island" just faded into background noise...did not care for them at all. Amazing harmonies.

Liked this album, a few songs I’d heard, beautiful harmonies- and new songs discovered 🎁

Nice harmonies and overall playable. It has the rock sound but not its energie. I get neither the feeling nor the importance of this album.

Some real gems…and a few sleepers.

Wow I didn't know they were that early huh. 1969

Pretty good Classic Rock album

wish i could give it 3.5 stars, enjoyable enough to listen to

Good music by a great, classic supergroup.

I like the instrumentals but I just wouldn’t relisten any time soon

The first album by one of the first super-groups. The first thing that manages to stand out to me is the lovely vocal harmonies, it sounds quite Beatles-esque. I've gotten a lot of folk albums recently so my lack of enthusiasm might stem from that. Highlight Song/s: Guinnevere

Fun fact: CSN also stands for College of Southern Nevada 👍

Side A sounds like a band trying to be more Simon and Garfunkel than S&G. They succeeded, but S&G themselves are the right amount of S&G. Side B is more psychedelic. It has some good ideas, but overall it sounds old rather than classic. Favorite song: Marrakesh Express.

I never gave this album a chance, and I'm glad I finally did. Is it great? No. Did it absolutely change my life like some albums I've heard? No. Is it a fun, pleasant album that I'll put on my Background Music playlist and nod along to when it comes up? Absolutely.

Very harmonic vocals and a mix between folk and rock

A good folk album! Easy listening but nothing that I was blown away by. Maybe they really need Young

Solid folk album. Good for a roadtrip or a night around a campfire

Helplessly hoping really kept this from being a 2. I enjoy CSN, but it kinda gets a tad boring after a while. Young is really the secret sauce that made deja vu great.

I thought I would hate this. Im glad I have now listed to one album of these guys. I cannot promise I will still feel so amicable towards them by the end of this list.

Some songs were really good but others are unbearably twee and corny (almost flight of the concords-esque but without being funny).

Well, let me first add I'm not a fan of Neil Young, but this album without him, sounds just bland. Trippy hippy sweet summer west coast folk, well performed, nice harmonies, but it's missing the bite that "Deja Vu" had. To sweet to me. 3/5

Solid 70s rock album. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

The musicianship on these songs are really good. It was so lowkey but they are all incredible at their instrument. The bass player especially kicks ass.

I liked Pre-Road Downs. That’s the only song that was a vibe for me. The rest was bleh for me.

This is the ceiling of “amazing composition, but not for me.” Fantastic and interesting music, but it’s just from an era that I am not from. If the outro scene from The Graduate was an album, it would be this album.

Very sweet and pleasant but not EXCELLENT.

My parents has this vinyl when I was a kid and I spun it in HS and college. Great harmonies and that classic CSN.

nicely executed but id rather be listening to the beatles or simon and garfunkel

I liked some of this, namely Hoplessly Hoping, Teach Your Children, and the guitar solos on Wooden Ships… which probably made you DISGUSTED. But generally I just don’t like the way this era sounds

Good album, some classic songs on here. Feels like there's some filler in the middle but it was enjoyable.

I definitely thought this was a Black trio from the 1950s. I particularly enjoyed “A Song With No Words”.

feel like i get a *lot* of Laurel Canyon albums on this list. this one's a good one. not mindblowing but i do like the songwriting and playing. fits into the late 60s scene quite well. deserves to be one of the 1001? well at least this one probably does

In that moment in time that album was fire, I’m sure.

3 out of 5. Helplessly Hoping is the standout song for me.

Good. Nice soft rock.

Nice 👍 one

Calm and chill album with nice harmonies. Slightly boring, though

Standouts Judy Blue Eyes Long Time Gone

It was nice listening to this. Comfortable.

++ "Long Time Gone" e "49 Bye Byes" terminam o álbum em forma ascendente, que até aqui não me tinha dito muito. Talvez haja algo mais interessante a explorar, deste grupo?

It was nice, but a bit underwhelming for what is essentially a supergroup.

Im generally not a fan of American folk and folk-oriented rock so I’ve always been just ok on CSN. Listening to a full album was interesting. The harmonizing, which is their signature, seemed forced at times. Hits and misses across the album. Stephen Stills is a great musician and I appreciated more exposure to that. A better experience than I expected overall, tbh, but still not my bag personally.

Great harmonies, a lot of the songs felt very similar and I didn’t love all of the songwriting

Gelassen und süss

I appreciate the musicianship of Crosby, Stills & Nash. I found most of the melodies enjoyable and the songwriting to be interesting. However, the vocals and harmonies sound exceptionally dated. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I also don’t really care for the vocals and harmonies very much. I’m not going to say they are bad because they aren’t, but they don’t mesh with my taste. I am generally not a fan of folk rock. It feels a bit like I needed to be there to get it. I am curious to see how the addition of Neil Young plays out once I get assigned the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album. This is really a 2.5, rounded up to a 3 for the supergroup’s sake.

I had very low expectations for this album. Not because the artist is bad but because the cover was boring and underwhelming combined with the fact that I didn’t know any of their music and their name makes them sound like a country band. The good news is that they are not a country act. But sadly they are also not far enough away from being a country act. Most of the album is slower songs that didn’t really click with me. I will say however that what blew me away about this album is that there are some touches of like psychedelic rock, which were not only welcome changes to the sound but also stellar music. Like the three songs that I liked (marrakesh express, pre-road downs, and wooden ships) were all legitimate psychedelic bangers. I just wish there was more of that, specifically, on the album. Still great craftsmanship though, even on songs that I didn’t care for, they typically on all the songs have crazy good guitar playing. So this album definitely belongs on this list but it’s just kinda not entirely for me, has some highlights I like but you will probably like this more than me.

I've never really bothered with 'Crosby, Stills and Nash' and coming into this album I wondered whether that was a mistake. It seems not. It isn't unpleasant. I'm grateful Neil Young isn't present. It is 'Simon & Garfunkel like' but without the gentle humour, or occasional hard edge that S&G bring to their songs. It is all quite 'pleasant', gentle and very much of its time. I think it has aged badly. If you're a fan of late-60s folk rock, this is probably fantastic. I'm not, so it will get a middling 3/5 from me.

This is bizarre, but I weirdly kinda liked this? At least a few songs got my attention. Unfortunately most of it just isn't really my jam, but still, surprised!

Had a good time with this, pretty chill/what I expected.

Some good stuff

Throughout this entire endeavour I've been a bit underwhelmed by CSN(Y), and drawn more to their solo work. This didn't really change my mind, but perfectly pleasant listen.

Carino ma nulla di che.

mellow. folky. harmony. chill.

So versatile, this album is going all kinds of places

It's alright

These guys can't do shit without Young.

An interesting album, a present and chill listening 3/5

I liked the songs I already knew. The ones I didn't know weren't bad either

Its good stuff.

this one's alright. it's got some tunes, that are not complete dogshit, there's some vibes that are not pure trash. decent background music, especially if you don't understand english.

Jolly but too high-pitched for my taste.

Ok, Boomer. It's fine. A bit samey at times.

beatlecore very good vibes tbh

Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: ️🎸🛋️🏚 Production (2005 Remaster): 👂🔎👍 Music: 😌🔄😶 Rating: 🪵🪵🪵/5

I had high hopes for this one, but jt was just OK

Good folky guitars. Nice and chill.

There is a magic to CSN’s harmonies. Somehow - their voices are all very different but they blend in a truly unique way. These guys did not invent harmony, but..... the second you hear them sing you know instantly who it is. "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" is an amazing song, and has to be somewhere in the conversation of best album openers. The rest of the album doesn't quite reach that level for me. Probably because they overuse their tight harmonies so much. Anyways. It isn't really my bag, but it is a remarkable record with some incredible songs. I can absolutely see someone who’s never dipped their toe in these waters giving this a listen and it becoming their favorite record. THREE STARS

It has some incredible highs but some song just feel like filler.

A bit too hippy dippy for me. I always thought they were better when Neil Young came along & showed them all how to rock. Can’t deny the magic of the harmonies though.

weird. i love fleetwood mac's take on the california sound and pretty much no one else's

Lots of harmony

A classic for a reason. Not my first rodeo with this one.

Reminds me of my dad. Much worse than with the addition of Young. Harmonies are still nice. David Crosby is clearly the worst. Lots of the lyrics are embarrassing. Guinevere is annoying and bad. Helplessly Hoping is the stand out. A lot of the weaker points sounds like worse Simon and Garfunkel

Classic album. Maybe it's because I've heard plenty of CSN, but as good as the album is it doesn't do a lot for me anymore; it's pleasant to listen to, but doesn't evoke a deep desire to tune in and enjoy.

Listenable enough, their harmonies are always good and just the thing for an early morning listen.

Best Track - "Helplessly Hoping"

a classic folk album

Not life changing, but definitely some nice moments.

Well aware of these guys, where's Young? Listened once this morning, and it's not bad at all, several songs stuck out at first a bit like "Helplessly Hoping" and "Long Time Gone". But so far seems like fairly average, above average folk rock, really reminds me of Neil Young's 70s albums even though, funnily enough, he has not joined this group at this point in time. All in all I am thinking this is good but not overly great, quite easily 3.5/5.0 but I will round down to 3 stars.

Ok behageligt. Helplessly hoping og sidste nummer var go'e

Slow jazz good for cafes not my style though

This gives me The Beach Boys leave the beach and head to a cult in the woods. It's well done musically, but it doesn't make me want to listen to get it again. It does make me want granola though on a parfait.

Very Simon and Garfunkel as noted, with a great tracks showcasing the harmonies that, I believe, they were famous for. Was a bit twee/whimsical in parts and their cover of Everybody's talking can't hold a candle to Nilsson's- but a little research showed it was released the same year so guess it was bad timing. Looking forward to abit more of the political stuff and Neil Young getting involved.

As i age,i see myself liking more and more and appreciating folk rock especially from that late 60's-70's era. It's this warmth.. This playlist really opens and expands my ears(that i thought there were already there). With that said i really enjoyed this album. Favourite songs: Carried away, Cathedral(has unexpected swifts and a fantastic atmosphere my top favourite), Dark star it's just magical and hypnotic with amazing keys and bongos, Just a song before i go instantly got me with it's amazing lyrics and last song of the album I Give You Give Blind not only slows down but it's fluid with great messages and energy! it's a 3 stars for me cause at times it is too slow for me and the way one of the lead singers sings in some songs really ruins the atmosphere.

Can't distinguish between individual songs. Individually soothing but gets kinda samey by song three or four. Did not finish.

Technically good, but not really great in any way.

3 1/2. I think I will like it more once I hear it a few times.

Classic!

only because I want to give a 3.5

Good for the three main singles (suite judy blue eyes, helplessly hoping and wooden ships). Otherwise, feels a bit too much like Simon and Garfunkel . Also teach the children is a better song with Young also accompanying.

I can really only handle so much CSN and then it’s time for not CSN

"Suite Judy Blue Eyes" is a classic. "Wooden Ship" though? Lowkey might be the best song on the album. The rest was decent folk rock.

Wenn man solche Musik mag, bestimmt gut. Ist nichts für mich, aber in Ordnung. Wenigstens war Neil Young nicht dabei.

Fine, more dudes on guitars today, fun music but ready for something new

It was okay, kinda soothing

soulful and sweet but i still don't get the hype behind david crosby

definitely a mellow 60’s vibe (love a tasteful rock organ). don’t hate it but need to be in the right mood for it. looked up their official instagram profile and they have 583 followers LMFAO. favorite song: wooden ships

Crosby, Stills & Nash has a name more like a law firm than any other band I know. Unrelated: this album is pretty good. There’s a mix of great folk rock songs, and some I just don’t really care about. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Guinnevere, You Don’t Have To Cry, Wooden Ships, and Helplessly Hoping are all pretty excellent songs. Marrakech Express is fine, but it gets a little grating. Pre-Road Downs has some cool psych stuff, but isn’t a highlight either. And a lot of the rest is just kind of whatever to me. But I am glad I heard this in general.

nice harmony misses Mr Young's grunge on some tracks

Where. Tf is neil

Those harmonies are ridiculous

An average ending to an average week. I didn't receive a single 4-star or higher album. "Self-Titled" has some good moments, like the first song. The fact that there are 3 famous, talented musicians on this album is fantastic. I hope I get a better week this time. 3 stars for "Self-Titled".

Not my type of music. That said, I enjoyed listening to it. ★★★

CSN are always an enigma to me. To me they represent the transition period from the folk-rock era into the yacht-rock era. As a result, they can be a little bit hard to read. This album leans heavily in the folksy direction. There's some decent folk tunes on this one, but the ones that lean more into classic rock vibes are my favorites here. Pre-Roads Downs, and Wooden Ships were my favorites after the first listen.

That was... alright, I guess. Not great. The "Song with No Words" absolutely should have had words - that was ridiculous and I never want to hear it again.

i liked it but not really my entire vibe

Men smule for langt.

This album reminds me why Neil Young is my favorite of this act and its associated spinoffs. They really miss his grit. Of course, their harmonies are amazing, but there is a certain rawness missing without young. A lot of these songs are popular classic rock fair, and for a reason.

Marakesh express was my favourite song off the album but wouldn’t listen to it again

Its fine, some tracks are lovely others are sent me to sleep because they were boring

Recognized a few songs, still better than with young. But a lot of them sounded samie which is fine but I was hoping for a little more variation on the songs

I thought we had some sort of Crosby et al. album already, but it was actually Buffalo Springfield, which contains Neil Young, who is sometimes one of Crosby et al. Forget the Beatles movies, I need a CSN(Y)+BS primer. Except I don't want one because this album is boring. I did always think "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" was a novel kind of song title; you don't get a lot of colons in popular music. I'm sure I've heard the song before (I think it's on one of those Billboard albums?) but it clearly didn't stick with me. The best part is definitely the do-do-do-do-dos at the end. It seems to me that Morocco (and Northern Africa in general) is way more prevalent in the pop culture of the 60s than it is now. What's up with that? Maybe I should read a history book instead of the Crosby et al. wiki compendium. Did you know Nash was in the Hollies?? We're in a deeply tangled web here. And Crosby was in the Byrds. Wow wow wow. I'm really sleepy and 'Guinnevere' is not helping. The best part is definitely the do-do-do-do-dos in the middle. This one sounds a little like Simon and Garfunkel. Maybe that's Crosby's vibe. My assessment is that Stills is my least favorite singer. And I think Crosby is my favorite. But also if you asked me to tell the three apart I would have no idea. I didn't really enjoy this album; it was very sleepy, but I didn't quite dislike it either, so I guess it scrapes a 3. Highlight: 'Teach Your Children' (me: hm, where do I know this from? wiki: "In 1985, the song was used with modified lyrics in a TV commercial promoting schools' use of the Apple II family of personal computers" me: aha, so it was)

Highlights: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, You Don't Have to Cry, Wooden Ships. In a nutshell: where it all began. Soft and melodic folk, rock and blues. I got lost in the guitar solos a few times (top notch work there). Overall: 5/10

chill folk rock

A classic, but didn’t capture me on this listen.

Not quite as good without the Y, but still a comfort fit harmony-fest. The “hey girl be my lady” stuff makes you realize they were essentially a boy band. A boy band in willowy man-blouses with too much sitar, but a boy band nonetheless.

“You know you really shouldn’t take yourself so seriously. And if you wanna know why it’s cuz no one else does. Somewhere along the way someone told you you were deep and sensitive. But you’re not. No you’re not.” - Camper Van Beethoven. Sums up my reaction to these songs perfectly. The harmonies are spectacular and it’s really well recorded. Musically, the songs and arrangements are interesting. Suite: JBE is great. But I find the rest of these songs so emotionally limp; I get bored and start listening to the lyrics and that makes me wonder, DO you guys really take yourselves this seriously? Wake me up when Neil gets here. I hate his voice, but at least he has a sense of humor.

Is 1 Lied in Playlist gegangen

Álbum decente pero con muchas canciones skipeables

I listened to this album quite a bit during my hippy phase in high school. It has its moments!

This has never been my style of music. The album is ok. Definitely has some of their more famous songs on it.

I didn't like that.

Sort of like Simon & Garfunkel but instead of boundless artistic inspiration and unique compelling sound, they just played their instruments kinda neat and had three dudes instead of two. Also a fourth dude, give or take

The harmonies are great, but not for me. I'd rather just listen to Simon and Garfunkel if I was interested in music like this. Wooden Ships is about the only thing I'd want to listen to again.

I've given better ratings to worse folk albums (eat your heart out Tim Buckley, love you man) but I found this underwhelming. Helplessly Hoping and Teach Your Children were both great but the rest of the album really blended into a soup of high quality but forgettable folk music for me. Can't deny those harmonies but hell if I could sing back a single melody after two listens.

I know this album is a classic, but I decide if I want to call it great, or just very, very good. There are some great tracks here, but not all bangers. But maybe that’s the definition of a great album as opposed to GOAT

Not really my thing, but decent enough.

I can see why it’s so ubiquitous in its genre. Some good tunes but didn’t blow my mind.

I was trepidatious with this one as classic rock I wasn't familiar with, but ended up really liking it. Wouldn't be a go to, there aren't many stand out songs, but overall very solid and enjoyable.

They were better when Neil young joined

Great vocal harmonies and a few good tracks

No private session used for Spotify. Couple of classics on this album, rest of it was pretty good. Loved the harmonizing, gets a little to folksy in some places, but it's a great album but won't make it into regular rotation.

Pleasant to listen to.

Pretty fun album, nothing else to say

Judy Blue Eyes and Long Time Gone are good. Very good even. There's a bot too much hippie and folk in the rest for me to like it. I'm not coming back to the album, but will probably play a track again at some point.

Mason Crosby, Dante Stills & Steve Nash?

It was fine, not great, not my thing. It was a bit repetitive.

Easy listening 6 out of 10 maybe

I'll have to come back and review properly because I just didn't feel like listening and skimmed.. I know them, I like them, can't speak to the full album specifically.

Great first song. Really mellows out after that. I like the guitar solo style - a bit of progressive noodling around is really satisfying. Some fun, but mostly a bit too mellow for my liking. Could’ve been better with some more energy, even if the songs were going to be slow or soft.

Mysigt. Lite långtråkigt ibland kanske, en sämre Neil Young.

sympatoche

Nice little acoustic numbers, CS&N are at their best where they’re all harmonising together. I prefer their work with Neil Young, and The Beautiful South did a better cover of Everybody’s Talkin’, but this is a nice enough record.

Oh brother this again

The Good: You know… an album named after the band… The Bad: That the band had no imagination, thus called themselves Crosby, Stills & Nash… The Ugly: … There are two bands who’s followers are willing to go to the edge of the world for them: The Gratefull Dead, and this band. I’ve never been willing to go to the edge of the world for either of them. Sure, there are some more than classic tunes on this album, the opening song having been overly used in TV and Film scores whenever something hippy is needed… So I listened to the album, the first time I actually recall listening to a CSN album, and it was okay, I guess. One of the thoughts that kept popping into my head was “do you really need to do that fucking harmony again?” I was getting visions of some hippy chick telling me “listen man, let the world flow through you” or some such bullshit like that. Then the pen-ultimate tune started playing, and that sealed the deal for me: I do not like CSN! Their cover of Everybody’s Talkin’ just proved my point above that there is a point of too much something… I guess I would be of a different opinion if I were into the MaryJane, maybe… But I am not, so there… 3* for cultural value, but soooo close to droppin’ it down to two...

Overall a very soothing and pretty album, and I like when they do the doo-doo-doo (Lady of the Island, Song with No Words). Although I usually really appreciate polyphoy, it's close to an overkill for me. I wouldn't want to listen to the album twice in a row. Based on that, and the fact that not one song really moved me, I'm keeping it at a humble 3 stars. Might regret later.

Great folky rock. This was a strong 3.5 for me, but going to have to round it down to a 3. I wasn't a huge fan of the slower songs, personal preference.

They're Taking Me To Marrakesh 1001 Albums Generator 59 (06/24/2025) So yesterday I had Joni Mitchell's Blue, and today I'm staying in the Laurel Canyon Scene with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Soon, they would be joined by Neil Young to make Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, but for now, CSN was a supergroup of just three individuals. Formed by former members of The Hollies, The Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield, CSN started performing informally together in 1968 and found that their voices could harmonize quite well. After complications with existing record label contracts, CSN finally released their debut album, Crosby, Stills & Nash, in 1969. Stephen Stills' songs are my favorite overall. The opening song, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, is the longest and is a through-composed folk rock masterpiece. Stills wrote this song for his ex-girlfriend Judy Collins and performed it for her. They both cried but it didn't end up rekindling their relationship. Judy Blue Eyes has four distinct parts that flow beautifully into one another. My favorite is the last section with the repeated wordless vocals. You Don't Have To Cry and Wooden Ships are the other Stills songs that I really enjoy. Both are relatively high energy, with the former feeling the most like the cover in that it feels like a bunch of guys jamming out on their front porch, and the latter almost feeling like an Allman Brothers song, which is a very good thing. I'm not as big of a fan of his later contributions, the slow Helplessly Hoping and the boring 49 Bye-Byes. David Crosby doesn't have as many writing credits, but his songs are mostly great. Guinnevere has a psychedelic repeated acoustic guitar riff that I love and some of the best vocal harmonies on an album full of great vocal harmonies. He also is a cowriter on Wooden Ships, which I mentioned previously. His final contribution is the only other song that I like on the second side, the bluesy Long Time Gone. The distorted lead guitar throughout this song is great. Unfortunately, Graham Nash has my least favorite crop of songs here overall. Pre-Road Downs is okay with the reversed guitar throughout being a highlight, but it lies between two much stronger songs. Lady Of The Island is far and away my least favorite song here and feels like such meaningless filler in the middle of the album. Nash's greatest contribution here is Marrakesh Express, which has perhaps the best chorus of any song on the whole album. I love the subtle organ in the background of the chorus too. Crosby, Stills & Nash is more good than bad, but I found it to be slightly uninteresting. I saw another reviewer say that it just made them want to listen to Yes, which I thought was so weird, but I kind of get it now. When it's good, it's great, but this is a band that would truly find themselves when they became a quartet. 3.5/5, rounded down to a 3. Favs: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes Marrakesh Express Wooden Ships Least Fav: Lady Of The Island

6.1/10

🧍‍♂️

the one with young better

No young

I do like CSN, but I prefer their later stuff. This album had lovely harmonies, but it was kind of forgettable.

good enough

Paisible et harmonieux

nice and calm, very peaceful

Running the gauntlet of all the different iterations of these four guys. Still just alright for me. Solidly 3/5 across almost every version.

It was nice. Some catchy songs in there but not the best. Pleasant enough for some winter walks in the leaves.

Signs of great things to come

I liked it a lot. 3 to 3.5 stars

Exactly what I expected, a solid album - yeehaw! A few standout songs - Guinnevere most notable. Not sure if it would be a regular listen for my taste though. A strong 3, bordering 4.

Pretty mellow listen. Neither good nor bad to my ears. Middle of the road kinda feel. Not bad but not something I’ll listen to often

Certainly in the better half of folk rock album I heard. Some songs still have the tendency to disappear into the background, but the core of this album is pretty fun a satisfying, with pleasant vocals and instrumentation. Chill but not boring. 7/10

didn't listen to the whole thing this time but i've listened before ... pretty good album but not one i usually go out of my way for

Solid harmonies. Classic chilled out 60s folk music

# Album Name: Crosby, Stills & Nash # Artist: Crosby, Stills & Nash # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Not bad. Steady as she goes. Doesnt really move out of third gear if im honest. Couple of decent tracks. The album didnt really stand out to me on a first listen though. # Top Tunes: Jude Blue eyes / Marrakesh / Helplessly hoping # Would I listen to it again? Not sure. Maybe.

Not my jam

Classic, but save for a few cuts, not my thing

2.5 I asked my Dad after I listened to this if CSN was like an underground hippy thing or they were mainstream. He said that they were on the radio and were somewhat popular in his friend group, which I dont think answered the question. Or maybe it did and they are/were a bit of both. Im pretty indifferent to CSN, I think it doenst hold up to the test of time over other acts in the same period

Beautiful harmonizing. Awful versions of Everybody’s Talking and Teach your Children. I find their style can get monotonous

some of them really caught my attention and some of them were just...there yk still a pretty decent album 3.5/5

Not for me this. It’s calm, pleasant, easy listening, but forgettable.

01) Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - 7,5 02) Marrakesh Express - 8,0 03) Guinnevere - 7,0 04) You Don't Have to Cry - 7,0 05) Pre-Road Downs - 7,0 06) Wooden Ships - 7,5 07) Lady of the Island - 6,5 08) Helplessly Hoping - 7,0 09) Long Time Gone - 7,5 10) 49 Bye-Byes - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,20 (72/100) Current ranking: 301/543

Verschrikkelijk. Hahahhahaha song with no words dekt wel lekker de lading hoor.

Still more Boomer classics. Pretty harmonies. But pretty boring too. 3 stars, not sure it needs that many

After a couple of listens, I still can't decide on this one. Some parts are wonderful, the harmonies are flawless, and tracks like Guinevere and Helplessly Hoping are beautiful while doing something really interesting with the arrangement. And at the same time, the cloying harmonies did get sickly sweet at times. Some tracks are just dull, or tacky (Marrakesh Express had me rolling my eyes more than anything else). The number of times I heard 'My Lady' made me feel like I was at a fedora wearing convention. The best parts were really something, but as an album it didn't stick for me, with a couple of exceptions

It's fine, but I think the CSN style requires Y to give it a little edge.

Solid but unimpressive. Over all too mellow without being memorable enough to make it more than something to fall a sleep to. A handful of good tracks like "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Marrakesh" not enough to raise album above OK.

This album isn't bad, but after a while it just sounds like the same song over and over with little variation. It doesn't do much for me, but I also don't dislike it so I guess that's something.

Great harmonies, but the music wasn't as good as when they were with Neil Young, sorry 7/10

it's fine. great simon and garfunkel harmonies. mild political slant without any sort of call to action. average 1960's. nothing to complain about. decent.

The vocal harmonies are good but not Earth-shattering. Some of the backing music is good though the production is clearly date. This probably needs multiple listens.

Just not my thing, was maybe my favorite of the CSNY universe Rating: 3.1

Classic, easy listening, a little boring for me. I like their harmonizing and soft guitar solos. Marrakesh Express feels a lil racist, opening with "whoopa, hey mesa, hooba huffa, hey meshy goosh goosh" lmao what is that? Fav was Wooden Ships

Kinda one note for me

Kann man schön im Garten hören

It's good, but it's not my kind of good. A bit dull but worthy.

Great album.

Definitely enjoyed it

Feels like a lifetime ago that I listened to this!

The falsetto harmony is so grating. Unfortunately, it’s their signature sound. “Song with no words” is unforgivably irritating. While I loathe the vocals, the instrumentation is fantastic. The guitars and Leslie amp on the keys get that psych-rock vibe down, the drums are crystal clear and the bass leans on funk and pulls it all together.

Highs are better than expected, lows are just kinda there. Harmonies are great but a little overproduced.

i’ve listened to several songs on this album before. nostalgic . feels like summertime with my family. soulful and familiar to me. love the first one. def have heard before. i dig easy listening 60s soft shit. (judy bloom) not super into 2nd song (train song) third song feels like king arthur’s court. like old kingdoms knights n shit so title is apt track four - lovely track 5 meh okay lady of the island is lovely helplessly hoping - yes i like teach your children well feeling a solid 3 (as in id listen again but not my fav) would give it a four but prolly won’t play it again any time soon.

Off top, I’m in a better mood today so my review of this album will likely be inflated. I’m not usually a huge fan of this genre/era of music or people singing together, but I have a feeling this will turn out to be a somewhat happy album. I liked the format of taking the album song by song, but that amount of involvement has already begun to feel unsustainable. I’ll just speak about this one and each other as a whole from this point on. I feel like I’ve heard all of these songs before, even though I haven’t. I appreciate the imagery and love songs, especially one early in the album talking about a girl in the garden with the fruit and stuff. The slower songs are nice and easily blended in. Nothing too abrasive here at all. 6/10 After reviewing a couple of these albums, I think I’ve realized I have more bad to say than good about most things. That’s a shame but this album was okay for sure.

Pretty good stuff, it’s def boomer coded. The last song with Neil Young was my fav. All and all, a kinda boring album but I’m glad I listened to it. It’s just not evocative in any sense. I didn’t know who these guys were before listening to this album.

Judy blue eyes - nice long ballad to start the album. Enjoyed this one 6/10 Marrakesh express - fun little bouncy diddy 5/10 Guinevere - slows it down another nice track. I’m starting to float 6/10 You don’t have to cry - I feel like they’re gonna pick me up and take me away. 7/10 Pre road downs - boring track, but I liked the guitar. 3/10 Wooden ships - cool track, some great moments in this one between high and low moments 6/10 Lady of the island - I really liked this track, felt like a bridge from somewhere. Makes me want to walk more flat footed (unrated) Helplessly hoping - absolute gem of a song. A perfect amount of hopelessness in a song. Also the main song in the annihilation movie. 10/10 Long time gone - I like this track ok but it doesn’t jingle my bell. 5/10 49 bye byes - indifferent to this track 4/10 Do for the others - second half of this album has just not been hitting like the first half did. Song is fine 5/10. Song with no words - it do be what the title says it is 4/10 Everybody’s talking - I want to listen to this song on a boat during sunset 6/10 Teach your children - I like this song alright too. Feels like a good send off to the album. 5/10 Still trying to hone in my rating system. I’m erring between a 6/10 or 7/10 so I think I’ll land on a 7/10 cause I like the energy being given off here. Fun album throughout to listen to, will definitely be returning to this. Though it did kind of slow down in the second half for me. I could definitely see this album growing on me more over time too. Stand out tracks: Judy blue eyes, Guinevere, you don’t have to cry, helplessly hoping

4/14/2025: a bit too folksy for me, but solid RiverNerns music

A nice song here and there in a sea of okay songs.

Chill album, harmonic vocals

3.5. Solid, but they needed Neil.

This is good, but it's missing something. (Neil Young)

I was really disappointed in this album. Nothing was bad but most of the songs were mediocre, only Wooden Ships was really good. I will try to give it a second chance in the future. Edit: On a second listen a month later, I liked it more, I've raised the rating from 2 star to 3, I'm still a little disappointed though.

Good vibes. Do do do d-do, dit do do-do do do.

kinda mediocre but I appreciated the bits of folk innit

Some twists and turns, overall it's really good.

Great harmonies on this. Groovy hippie music. I like the song that goes, "Do do do do do, do do do do do do."

This is like the quintessential 60's California mellow hippie vibe. Judy Blue Eyes Suite and Teach Your Children are the two big standout tracks here, but I prefer the Teach Your Children version from CSN and Young that features the steel guitar.
