Probs a nonce

This is a weird one for me. Musicianship 10/10 Historical importance 10/10 Personal enjoyment 7.5/10 I think I'm just too British and sober and far removed from the 60s to really vibe with it.

Some of Jimi’s best on here. Thoroughly enjoyable album that showcases him as the extraordinary guitarist he was.

Very good, I like it a lot.

I am experienced

Absolutely RIPPIN. So musically interesting, chord changes are wild. He's the real deal eh

This was great love his tone and none of the songs are boring. Super dynamic and fun and awesome. I would only say is one thing for me is that im not in love with one song in particular

instrumental obviously fantastic. lyrics are...

Yes, of course.

It's good. There are some exceptional songs. Arguably, a bit too long.

Really enjoyed it. Probably doesn't need to be an hour long. This guy is pretty good at guitar. And it's fun to listen to in contrast to guitarists on other albums from the 60s. The guy was just in his own category.

pretty dope. didn't realize so many classics were on their debut album. the highs are *so* high, but the album's on the longer side and there's a good amount of fluff. I like Hey Joe just a bit more than Purple Haze, Are You Experienced? is also very cool. soft 4

This album is awesome, the hits are giants. I wouldn't say this is Hendrix's weakest album, but the next two built on this and expanded it in bold ways.

I can't say anything that hasn't been said yet ...

I have had this CD since 1991. Today was the first time I have listened in a really long time. I have listened to compilations that are more blues focused since the last time I have listened to this album that I enjoy more. But this is great. Red House and The Wind Cries Mary are my favorites but the whole album is great even the songs that you've heard too many times before.

Seems like the perfect album for when you're traveling in your car. Though my favorite was Purple Haze. I really liked the riffs from that one. Stone Free is my second favorite. I just really love the almost funky (?) energy in it.

Still timeless. All songs sound original enough to have come out today.

A bit too many long guitar solos for me tastes but tracks like Highway Chile are absolute bangers.

belters only

The fact that this came out the same year as The Doors is crazy, what a fuckin' year

Sjajan.

Only had time to listen to it half way through, but one thing is sure, those riffs were good

purple haze--"excuse me while i kiss this guy" 5/5 no notes. third stone from the sun--apparently i am not experienced in the ways of jimi hendrix. sick slow guitar solo though. is that riff from... rasputin? well obviously not this song is 11 years older are you experienced--ok this ones a bit ... riskier. definitely more experimental hmmm this one is tough. i might lean 4.49/5 rounded to 4/5 because it was long and experimentally outside my taste. iconic opening tho

Hand trix

Very hard album to rate as there are 2 versions the uk and us with very different track lists, Spotify has the us track list in order with the uk songs after. I’ll rate the us version, I like it but I feel the really big songs take away from the enjoyment of some of the deeper cuts because you’re expecting a bit more, his guitar skills are exceptional and the band together sound amazing, I feel though it could have been more cohesive. Still a good album though and one people should have in their collections

so cool

Low 4 , some buts 8 really liked, but some too long experimental intrumentals for me and

Slumps here and there but otherwise sooooo good. 4.5

This album exudes coolness. One thing's for sure, the guitar did not disappoint. There are some cheeky lyrics on here as well, like on "Are You Experienced" and some poetic lines as well. It is on "The Wind Cries Mary", which goes: "Will the wind ever remember The names it has blown in the past? And with this crutch Its old age and its wisdom It whispers, "No, this will be the last" Liked songs: Manic Depression May This Be Love Third Stone From The Sun Are You Experienced Stone Free Can You See Me Jan. 24, 2026 - 5:53 PM

The talent and creativity of Jimi Hendrix guitar playing is readily evident all across this album. While Hendrix is never going to be favorite style of music, listening with fresh ears, these tracks can really light a fire in me. This album is full of hits I have heard before on radio and films and several of the album tracks I wasn't previously familiar with were also quite good. However, I feel the album was too long by a few tracks, and I was happy to be through it when it was over. I didn't expect to like this album enough to warrant 4 stars, but this album was able to surprise me.

Great album! Jimi was such a good guitar player and just amazing musician and so much influence from him

Melhor do álbum: "Hey Joe". Pior do álbum: "Highway Chile".

Quite the experience in did! 8/10

Iconic

Guitary

After listening to so many other 1960s albums on this project, I can better appreciate just how innovative this album is. It really sounded like nothing else at the time. Love the combination of rock riffs with blues soloing.

Excellent album reminded me of highschool with friends

I forgot how good Fire is

Either I'm warming up to Hendrix, or my appreciation of his albums tails off as his career progressed, because I've had them in reverse chronological order, and gave 2, then 3, and I think this one deserves a four. It's hard to listen to Foxy Lady without picturing Garth though.

undeniably very groovy

Solid album, really amazing guitar riffs.

no i am not. i think the cover is amazing, solid record with amazing tracks

Remember listening to this as I was discovering Hendrix and learning guitar. Was impressed then and still quite naive so interested to see how it hits now… *presses play and sits back* There are so many bangers on here. Such quality, original, layered. It might just fall short of the 5* because there are a couple of weaker tracks. Also notice that the track listing is different on different releases of it so hard to know which I’m rating. Maybe I will restart with the original listing (start with ‘Foxey Lady’. ending with ‘Are You Experienced’) but there are some huge tracks this misses on the extended listings. Hmmmm this is confusing me on how to rate!

I mean obviously its good. Maybe better than most classic psychedelic rock. I just don't like it quite enough to give a 5 I think.

Is this the greatest Guitar Album in History? I don’t know. Is it the most important Guitar Album I’m history? I reckon it is a strong contender. I probably first started listening to Hendrix in my teens in the 1980s and even then when there was so much rock, metal, punk and so much emerging stuff that I consumed via John Peel etc I thought it sounded fresh, creative and vibrant. Maybe some of this sounds slightly dated now, not all of it and that’s a matter of opinion, but this as a debut Album probably changed the direction of music fundamentally and certainly influenced countless guitarists through the ages. No Jimi, no “insert rock guitarist name here”. And it’s not only great Guitar playing, the Rhythm section of Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding trash away here and add massively to the sound. I’ve also thought that Hendrix is a pretty decent vocalist as well. I wasn’t sure which version of this debut album to listen to. The UK version was released first but omits the three singles that were released first and the US version includes them dropping some other tracks. In the end I opted for the deluxe version which included all of it but it’s 17 tracks still came in at around an hour and didn’t’ outstay its welcome.

I think I had said in one of these reviews - much to my surprise, in fact - that Led Zeppelin represented the epitome of what a rock group could do. In one sense, that’s undeniable. As a four-piece, they are perfectly balanced, supremely competent, and entirely in control. But that control is precisely the problem. Zeppelin are Apollonian (I said that in another review. Am I just repeating myself?) - ordered, muscular, rational. They think the blues. And thinking, however impressive, isn’t really rock’n’roll. If rock is Dionysian - ecstatic, excessive, bodily - then The Jimi Hendrix Experience represents a different, and perhaps truer, epitome. A three-piece in which everyone is a musician with no foppish, pinup frontmen. They operate less through mutual comprehension than through shared sensation. It often sounds as though they aren’t listening to one another at all. There is too much noise, too much heat, too much going on. But they feel one another, and that’s enough. Mitch Mitchell’s jazz-inflected drumming constantly threatens to outrun the song, Noel Redding hangs in there by instinct rather than authority, and Hendrix himself pulls the whole thing sideways with feedback, fuzz, and sudden harmonic lurches. Nobody stops to think. The music just happens. Are You Experienced? captures that condition perfectly. The songs are mostly short, single-length bursts, but they are packed with strain. Fire, Foxy Lady, Manic Depression all feel like they’re pushing against their own containers, testing how much disruption a pop format can take before it collapses. The studio effects - phasing, reverse tape, exaggerated stereo placement - aren’t decoration so much as symptoms of a band trying to escape the room they’re in. Even, within such constraint, Third Stone from the Sun sounds more free than any Zeppelin free-time mid-section. There is, of course, a contradiction at the heart of the Experience. It’s a group, but it carries one man’s name. This is Hendrix’s vision, and the others fall in with it. They are not co-authors so much as exceptional participants in his revel, his maenads. Hendrix himself is constrained too: by three-minute songs, by singles logic, by the expectation of accessibility. You can hear him straining hardest of all, trying to break free of forms that his bandmates inhabit naturally. Can that be the epitome of the rock group? Not democracy, but one god’s tune whipping choas from his followers? That strain is what distinguishes the Experience from Zeppelin. Zeppelin never sound trapped. They move effortlessly within structures they’ve already mastered. Hendrix sounds as though he is still discovering what he can do, even while doing it. I’m not sure whether rock’n’roll is best defined by freedom, by effortlessness, or by strain. But if it’s this last one - the audible pressure of desire against form - then Are You Experienced? makes as strong a claim as any record ever did to being rock’n’roll. A greatest-hits album disguised as a debut, even without Purple Haze and Hey Joe on the original UK edition. It would get another half star if it did. 4 One of the reasons The Beatles stopped playing live after summer 1966 was that in Japan the audiences at the Budokan were so subdued (or perhaps polite) that the band were dismayed to be able, almost for the first time, to hear themselves play. Part of The Beatles greatness is that their musical standards, in fact their musical ideas, were higher than their abilities. Well their idea to step away from live performance couldn’t really have been better timed. Their last paid public performance was in San Francisco on 29th August 1966. A few weeks later Jimi Hendrix arrived in London. The Jimi Hendrix Experience were quite good at playing music and could always hear themselves play. Their debut album is worth acknowledging merely for the aggressive edge achieved by recording guitar at previously undreamt of volume. To my ears Are You Experienced? makes supposedly ‘heavy’ contemporaries, Cream, for example, sound utterly feeble. It is a carefully made studio album but at the same time preserves something of the live sound that was so famously striking to those that witnessed the London shows of late 1966, Paul McCartney among others. Much has been made of Hendrix’s heaviness over the years, to the point of injustice to the other aspects of his playing, particularly how beautiful it is. Even in the full flight of psychedelic noise-making there is a rhythmic elegance and even melodicism to Hendrix. He was a wonderful musician and rightfully celebrated as preeminent on the instrument, and is almost indisputable as its most influential player. All of that has made it so easy, tragically, to overlook Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. They are dazzling, daring players themselves and provide many moments worth celebrating on this album. That Are You Experienced? goes a bit forgettable in the middle (‘I Don’t Live Today’, ‘May This Be Love’) is justly forgiven by most of the assessments on the 1001 albums project, who have this album in the top 15. That said, they are all reviewing different albums. Different 40 minute UK and American 1967 releases are now more or less forgotten in the digital age in favour of (different) sprawling hour-long accounts of all the JHE tracks that featured across both, neither of which ends with the title track, which is daft. In any case I am happy to stick with the UK original. It wasn’t just in first by three months - it’s also the work of two Brits and one dude who is basically as British as Handel and even lived in his house. Purple Haze, Hey Joe and the Wind Cries Mary aren’t on this album. It’s ’Foxy’ not ‘Foxey’. America can go jump. 4/5

Great, classic sound; I'm not well-versed in Hendrix but it's easy to see this as groundbreaking. Highlight: "Fire"

Great album, started strong, got a bit weaker as it went on. Not as repeatable for me, but no major complaints.

I was surprised by how experimental this album is. This is my introduction to Jimi Hendrix, and I must say I’m a big fan! This album was like a hybrid of blues, rock, and sci-fi in the best way. The album commits to experimentation but does not sacrifice style and, the songs feel whole, not like a frankenstein creature. Though the binaural effect was pretty jarring at times, but I commend it anyway cs they achieved that effect (though not as smoothly) with none of the tech meant to produce it, and that’s genius to me.

it was very good!

I think he likes the guitar...

I really liked this. A classic for a reason, I like his voice. I was listening to this on my headphones and he kept going through my ears and im not too sure about how i felt about that.

Favorite Tracks: Purple Haze, Foxey Lady

Great album

Obviously rocking

I was never a big Hendrix fan, but after hearing this album, I just don’t think I gave him a fair chance. I have always liked The Wind Cries Mary, but this whole album is quite good…although The Third Stone from the Sun gets a bit weird. This one is four stars for me, and I will be listening to it again.

Oh hell yeah, I'm definitely experienced. Excuse me while I kiss this guy. It is remarkable how fresh and vibrant this still stands. Haven't sat down and listened to the whole thing in years. Good shit. Mitch Mitchell is an excellent drummer, and it doesn't matter if Noel was pissed and down at the pub or not when Jimi's in town. Move over Rover indeed.

I didn't know I could enjoy rock like this, really well executed and very much a classic

Love purple haze! Great album, Hendrix makes the guitar cry and is a legend for a reason

Are You Experienced was my first JHE (and Jimi Hendrix at large) album, as well as my second “Highest Rated” album since I began this journey. Much like Ziggy Stardust, I enjoyed it quite a bit and I get the hype, but I don’t personally think it’s a five. Don’t get me wrong – the highlights are great and there are lots of them to be found. There are bits of solid songwriting, great vocals and legendary guitar work across a wide spectrum of rock & roll here. I’d gladly revisit Are You Experienced again, no doubt about that! On the other hand, the full album is longer than it needs to be and the inconsistent mixing got kind of annoying from time to time. For me, a five needs to have no skips and I can’t earnestly see myself getting giddy about coming back to tracks like “51st Anniversary” when there are no fewer than 12 other ones on AYE I’d rather listen to. I’m aware that the version I listened to on Spotify was actually the North American CD reissue from 1997, but the original UK edition (which is admittedly like 20 minutes shorter) also had a couple tracks that didn’t particularly stand out to me during my first listen. I’ll tell you what… I‘ve made a Spotify playlist with the original album tracklist that I’ll listen through when I get the chance. If my opinion changes, I’ll come back and edit my rating to five stars. For now, Are You Experienced is a high and respectable four. Highlights: Purple Haze, Manic Depression, Love or Confusion, I Don’t Live Today, Fire, Third Stone from the Sun, Foxey Lady, Are You Experienced, Stone Free, Highway Chile, Can You See Me, Red House

Nice vibe, I understand the success and appeal also why it was so influential. Songs are pretty sexy and groovy, and it's overall very catchy. Not something I'd listen to everyday, but very very good album. Really loved 'I Don't Dream Today', 'The Wind Cries Mary' and 'Fire'.

Hmm, I'm a little mixed on how I feel about this album. It took a few songs to start clicking with me. There were a few I really enjoyed "Are You Experienced", "The Wind Cries Mary", "May This be Love", and "Love or Confusion", but I didn't love the album as a whole. I understand the appeal, the guitars and everything are honestly really cool and pretty at times, but there's something that's just not fully clicking with me. I know how Iconic this is considered tho, so I wish I liked it more 3.75./5

Now I know where Foxy Lady is from

Thank goodness for the US version of this album, as there are some glaring omissions from the the UK original. This music has somehow stood the test of time and it wouldn't seem out of place if it were released today. Impressive. Knocking off 1 star as there are a couple of weaker tracks in there.

Peak jimi

Low 4 high 3 just didn't connect with it that much

Obviously influential. Jimi was such a prominent figure in the rock scene especially for African Americans

Superb

Electric. Captivating. Enticing. Addictive. Timeless. Oh, I’m definitely experienced. Whaaat an album! I’ll be dreaming of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar riffs tonight.

Really good.

Knew many of these songs on their own, enjoyed listening to them as a full piece. Overall, it's a pretty good album, very experimental guitar parts, and a lot bluesy-er then I anticipated. Favorite song: Hey Joe

an album that would be most loved by other musicians. crazy electric guitar skills and love the sadness that still comes thru. fave: I Dont Live Today

Classic

alot more bluesy than i expected (i'm not quite sure what i what i was expecting)! several saves, overall great album to bob along to as listen as you work

Great music one of the best to ever play guitar

Bluesy roots rock Good Nice psych

Wow, people sure do love this album... There's absolutely no denying that Hendrix is one of the most talented and influential musicians to have ever lived, but I'm here to rate the album - not the talent and influence of Jimi Hendrix (though I will concede that these things should absolutely contribute to the album's inclusion on the list - people should definitely hear this before they die simply because of its influence, completely irrespective of its quality). As for the album itself, it's fantastic! It doesn't earn a 5 star rating from me, for reasons I can't quite put my finger on... suffice to say it just didn't do it for me the way my other 5 star albums have. My gut feelings aside though, It's truly excellent - just maybe not exactly my thing.

The goat

Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Foxey Lady

bangers

Two pairs.

Purest distilled Summer of Love. +1 star if I'd rolled a number beforehand

I've been aware of Jimi Hendrix for a long time but never dove into his discography before. This album was a nice listen and its clear to see why Jimi is such a respected musician and guitarist. Obvious highlights are "Purple Haze" and "Fire" but I also enjoyed "Hey Joe" and "Highway Chile"

reminds me of rocky horror picture show in the best way

Incredible guitar skills. Great voice. Groovy, intense, occasionally dark themes. Casually. But it still did not captivate me 100%. Are you experienced? is incredible though.

Very much enjoyed a lot of this. Kept adding songs to my playlist - there's so many good ones and they're all a very sensible length. Ideal A very high 4 Songs added to playlist: - Purple Haze - May This Be Love - Fire - Third Stone From The Sun - Highway Chile - Red House

A classic

Probably my favorite album from Jimi. This one goes really hard

My favorite from Jimi!

An undeniable classic, great songs and strong musicianship!

Jimmy innit

Good time, good guitar work, not much to say

A classic, influencial for so many bands and musicians.

This could be a 5* its got so many great tracks! But it's also got some really average tracks that could've easily been cut from quite a big album!

Surprised I didn't love this as much as I thought! Still fantastic, but it felt bloated and long/repetitive at time?

An amazing album with the likes of purple haze

Had this when I was 11! Great then, great now. Hendrix still melts everything in sight

He is experienced

great, delicious, exactly what I needed after being double parked with yesterday's shite

Don’t believe the hype (just kidding). It is really good

My first real experience listening to a complete Hendrix album and it was a good one. I’d recommend it to others.

4/5 just because I prefer to listen to Jimi live

A legendary album. I imagine people back in 67 really freaked out when it was released. My only criticism is song number. Maybe cut 5 songs? Legendary

I always put Jimi Hendrix as the type of artist that gets mentioned around as one of the greatest of all time, but doesn’t really do anything for me. I completely respect the man’s talent, dude was a legend at the guitar. But I never really got into his songs. I kinda felt that on Electric Ladyland. Fortunately, this album’s a lot more packed with the Hendrix classics. Yes, even my jaded ass gets a pop from Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary. And some of the other side isn’t bad either. Is Hendrix my personal GOAT? No. Is Are You Experienced a good album? Yes. Favorite track: Purple Haze Other hits: The Wind Cries Mary, Foxey Lady, Hey Joe, Third Stone From the Sun, Are You Experienced

Booa, voltamos pros hippies. Purple Haze do caralho, a música te faz querer derrubar o governo.

A vibe, immersive

Got a lot of time for this album, love his guitar playing and it's got so many great tunes, it's unbelievable how talented he was.

A true revolutionary album. Music that still sounds fresh it could have been recorded yesterday . Hendrix still towers above all other guitarists due to his unique playing style and the impact he had and still has.

My favourite Jimi Hendeix album, absolutely no misses here and amazing instrumentation overall.

hey joe, may this be love e the wind cries mary sono le mie preferite. in generale bellissimo album

US version is best, including early hit singles.

That guitar sounds is more recognizable than a lot of singing voices. Really cool record with some of Jimi’s biggest songs no doubt, and only a couple that weren’t for me. Best Track: May This Be Love

Jimi Hendrix is so rad, it really does still feel fresh and distinctive, the Michael Jackson of guitar, inspiring generations who would ultimately be unable to replicate what he was doing. Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Fire... It's amazing stuff. BUT This one is his weakest. The vocal melodies aren't there yet, he hasn't mastered the recording process at EL studios and a lot of the songs aren't as interesting as they could be. I have to save my 5 for Electric Ladyland and Band of Gypsys. A strong 4, but we need somewhere to go with our mate Jimi

A master at work. Foxy Lady, Purple Haze, and Fire all still sound amazing. 4/5

Phenomenally funky guitar rifts. Jimi Hendrix does not disappoint in this album, which I have to admit I was very familiar with. Highlight song for me will always be "The Wind Cries Mary", which is not the kind of soft song I usually vibe to. However, the subtle drums match so well with the plucky Hendrix guitar, with the strangely quiet melodic lyrics. Wonderful. I think what I appreciate most about Jimi Hendrix is his guitar focused songs fit in quite well with the 70's, but his songs are only half as long as the guitar heavy rock wave in the 80's while also have more varied songs in the guitar itself. That has to be stressful as a musician, but damn does it sound good. 4/5

Most of these songs are fire, and one of them is "Fire". I definitely like this better than Electric Ladyland, maybe because it has a more approachable and "mainstream" vibe and structure in its songs? Great album though.

A classic. And justifiably so. This is a mere quibble, I suppose, but I wish the vocals were a bit stronger/more interesting. Love the psychedelia.

Solid album by Jimi! At times it felt a little unfocused and unpolished - sometimes those translated well to the overall vibes, but at other times not so much.

My fave Hendrix album. Just brilliant.

The fact this came out in 1967 is baffling. So advanced for its time. Can hear how Hendrix influenced the rock scene. Good flow to the album with a great start with purple haze and a chilled finish with red house.

Classic album starting off incredible strong with purple haze. No other songs really match up to purple haze on the album for me and was a little long but overall great listen.

almost no skips but the skips are exceedingly skippable

Not bad. Still not exactly my thing. But, not bad.

Love this one for sure. I think I'm going to give it 4 stars.

Classic Album. Blend of spoken word and melodic guitar

Noice.

The album had a strong start but I felt myself lose a little interest in the middle part. Regardless, each song was packed full of weird stuff and what I call ear candy -- things that make your ears perk up and tune in. Whether it was hypnotizing riffs, subtle vocals or weird sounds, you will find something that sticks out to you as you listen.

*Listened before the project* It’s just so awesome

Classic blues rock, brilliant musicians and an organic sound.

Sold classic rock album

Cool and good

A lot of great writing and instrumentalism, handed to a mix engineer who was high as balls, deciding that panning drums and vocals to hard left and right and then swapping them every couple seconds, not aligned with the music, was a great idea.

Solid from beginning to end, no notes

Veldig bra. Klassisk rock med en legende.

Classic rock. Hendrix set a whole new level with his playing. Great album

The american version is just so superior, literally has the 3 best songs and a classic opener

Fantastic stuff of course but gets a 4 because I go on original releases and lots of the best tracks on the Spotify version were only added to 90s CD reissued. Can't count them!

Enjoyable.

Even today Jimi’s music is a blast of extraterrestrial noise filtered through hash smoke and fuzz amps. Every song here is totally different from anything you could hear at the time, more psychedelic, more soulful, and more strutting than anyone around. Unfortunately this record has suffered in its sound over the years - it sounds like it was recorded in a basement studio with the amps hissing all over the room, and the stereo mix is trying too hard for effects than sounding right. But it doesn’t change how mind-blowing it is to hear Hendrix blast into the stratosphere on a 5 year journey into immortality.

Shredddddd (also Manic Depression is a frustrating mess!)

Enjoyed the drumming.

Groovy, puikiai gitara varo.

Fucking geweldig

The man's a genius and it shows

A Columbia House variant of this was one of my first CDs. The sound of the band is great, way better than their contemporaries... Amazing rhythm section. Not all of these tracks are classics, but since he died young, most of them are.

The hits are amazing…but I found some other jams a little lacking. A classic of course!

This is an important and hugely influential album and absolutely should be on this list. The music is iconic. Some songs are better than others. If I never have to hear the misogynistic bullshit in Hey Joe ever again, it will be way too soon. Yes, let's just make an absolute banger that glorifies violence against women. Hardest of hard passes. On the other hand, I really like May This Be Love, Manic Depression, and Third Stone from the Sun. I personally get tired of this album about halfway through. A little goes a long way. 4 stars 5 stars for its importance; -1 star for popularizing Hey Joe

I like the decade and the vibe. I will listen again to the whole album.

This is one of his best records. I enjoy this record very much

Quite enjoyable. He’s one of the super famous names that I’ve never really latched on to. This got me one step closer. Super talented musician

Hebdrixiä voisi kuunnella uudestaankin. Hyvä levy. 4/5.

I like Jimi!

An excellent listening experience!

I've listened to this before. Not focusing on Jimi. It's interesting listening to the drums how different they are from modern music. Almost no cymbals. Jimi's riffs are still so good. Trio bands should make a comeback. Third Stone from the Sun sounds like a jazz band

Goated

There was lots of Jimi Hendrix playing in my house as a kid. The man could make a guitar really sing.

Low 4 Its good but too long, and drifts dangerously close.to hard rock

Fantastic. Hey Joe an all time great "this guy's about to lose it" movie soundtrack song.

Yeah, good one. "May this Be Love," a lifelong favourite.

Pretty pretty good

Great album but there is too much filler to get it to five stars.

Obviously one of the classics. With the short time frame and small catalog of music from one of the most iconic guitarists ever, will never be less than. We are lucky to have what we have.

I was listening to "third stone from the sun" and was like, "where have I heard this melody before? It's "I'm too sexy"... I feel that in light of other things I've given a 4 this needs a 4 as well. I was surprised at how varied this album actually was

This album would sound original even today. Hendrix’s influence on rock music is apparent. Favorites are Purple Haze and Hey Joe.

I go back and forth with this one. Used to not care for it, then loved it. Now I appreciate it but don't f find I feel like listening to it too often.

spectacular album. not really anything I can say, it’s jimi hendrix man!! the noises he can conjure from his guitar are insane. huge fan of red house. gave it two listens, absorbed/processed lyrics a bit more the second time through - some of that I didn’t particularly enjoy (something about the mysterious mountains) but. it’s the 60s, bound to be a little strange. clearly the dude was going through it (’wish you’d hurry up and execute me’ in ‘i don’t live today’). solid!!

to think that this is JH's debut album, and that this was recorded in 1967. it holds up very well in 2025. I would hope that Electric Ladyland is also present in the list, otherwise i'll have no belief in those who compiled this list. There is plenty to like here for fans of Hard Rock, Blues Rock and Psychedelic Rock. a strong 4 to 4.5

One of the first records I ever bought and a definitive classic.

Some of Hendrix's best work on here, only like one or two "eh" songs on it

yup, this is jimi hendrix

Jimi. You're not a real guitarist! Learning by ear from listening to the radio and records, for Christ's sake?! Not a music school?! What a joke! Other guitarists worked their asses off to be where they are, and you took shortcuts and you think you're suddenly their peer?! You do what they do because you're experimental, you can make people listen to your music?! Other musicians commited their lifes to this! You don't... slide into it like a cheap pair of slippers and then reap all the rewards... Sorry, I just watched season 1 of Better Call Saul and after hearing name Jimi all I could think of is Jimmy McGill. Incredibly good album by the way, 4 or 5 star rating for sure.

Very strong beginning with obviously great guitar work, however, the second half drags on a bit too much for my taste. 3,5/5

This was an experience but one I would’ve enjoyed more in the context of its release. It’s still great and Jimi is just such a phenomenal guitar player but it was maybe a fraction too long for me

A great album by a great artist. I have heard it before and today wont be the last day I listen to it.

C'est bien

Really solid album. I think maybe it's a bit overrated, but still a great showing. Doesn't show off the true greatness of Hendrix's guitar skills, unfortunately.

I like the rock and blues mixture. Had enough variety to keep it interesting. Not enough to stand out tracks to earn five stars though.

psychedelic experience -- great solos & guitar riffs.

enjoyed it

I am now Experienced

This rocked hard. I remember learning how to play the guitar, working hard to get good enough to play my favourite solos from guitarists like David Gilmour and Jonny Greenwood. There’s a technical level of playing to those legends that is easy to emulate once you get good enough; but then there’s Jimmy Hendrix. “How does he get it to sound ‘just’ like that?” No matter how long I practised Hey Joe, or Purple Haze, I just couldn’t get it to sound as cool as Jimmy. As much as I do love this album, there are patches here where Hendrix is just showing off, noodling away with ideas that don’t really materialise into anything. For those unfocused moments it loses a star. For the sheer impressiveness of his talent, and the enduring wonder his work inspires in amateur guitar players around the World, I give this one 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Solid album almost a 5!

absolutely phenomenal guitar playing as expected

Lots of the big hits are on this album

I am experienced with this good record.

excuse me while i kiss this guy

Dost dobro, baš vajb! Za neku lounge chill večer s ekipom, pričati sranja i igrati društvene. 4/5, 7/10

Jimi Hendrix is always good music to listen to. Classic album and phenomenal musicianship.

I knew most of these songs. the ones I didn't i liked, but a few sounded like other songs. "May this be love" = "Angel" for the first few moments at least.

Superb! Some of the songs are a bit short like they are ideas that were never fully developed? Still a great listen.

Classic, Classic Classic! Velvety sonic soundscapes that only Jimi could do. The mark of an era. and a shame he was taken away from us at such and early age.

The good stuff is indescribable...in a class of its own. Everything else sucks but only by comparison... ya know like middle-kid songs.

Incredible riffs and overall a fun album. It runs into the same issue as any psychedelic rock album, sometimes it just goes on too long. Still a great album

It's a great collection of songs amd even those I'm less familiar with will probably grow but not sure it quite holds together. The bonus tracks probably didn't help that much. A 4.5.

This is brilliant. The annoying history of what did and didn't make which version of the album release meaning that the version linked is an hour long rather than 40 mins feels like a shame, but then they did the stupid thing of leaving the singles off the original UK album so it's understandable. There is definitely a 5 star album in there and I suspect with a few more listens the album tracks would become more familiar and I'd give it 5. His playing is beautifully subtle at times and he can switch up between styles and solo approaches depending on the song which I don't think I'd really registered before. I also think his vocals are fairly under rated. The band around him don't over play it and there is always room for the parts. I'm so close to giving this a 5.

**** Another classic album - some songs are a bit too "guitary" too me, but I like it.

Inspirador

Pretty good

Obvious why Hendrix is considered an all timer. Great instrumentation, great songs.

knock, knock, The Doors is Hey Joe! Chas Chandler estaba dejando The Animals, Linda Keith novia del guitarrista de The Rollings Stones estaba fichando guitarras ajenas. Jimi Fucking Hendrix. Lo arrastraron a tiempo fuera del sueño americano para llevarlo a Inglaterra, porque siendo guitarrista de apoyo nunca iba a llegar a cuestionarse: Are you Experienced? Hendrix respondió cómo sabía con guitarras, feedbacks, distorsión controlada y psicodelia. Mucha psicodelia. Y si Can You See Me, te vemos el proto hard rock.

Enjoyed this album.

Once a year I sit down and try to understand Hendrix. This wasn't my year. But I'm getting closer. Every year I get closer and closer.

Classique

The album that changed guitar forever. Jimi's debut finally showed the world what was known only in London clubs and that's the fact that electric guitar's monstruous prophet was unleashed upon the earth. Now that I'm done with simping, I have to say that this is far from a perfect album. Jimi is a terrible singer, but it's cancelled out by his guitar playing. The band around him is great too. The production here is far from the best and leaves some things to be desired sonically (it would be fixed in his two later albums. As far as songs go, there are no real misses here, some are just pure classics and others are strong, though sometimes a little forgettable, psychadelic blues pieces. This is a strong album, an incredible debut and in the end it's a 4/5 for me.

No denying Jimi is one of the all time greats on the guitar but I’m more drawn to great melodies and lyrics than instrumental so this isn’t one I return to often.

What an insane talent. Such a shame he became part of the now infamous 27 club. One of the great guitarists. I had heard a lot of the well tread classics such as Purple Haze and Foxey Lady many times before, but the whole album is a treat. I especially enjoyed Highway Chile.

Heeeey Jooooeee

Jeez. He’s just the best.

Clearly some innovative guitar rock. But there are some very weird choices on otherwise good jams here. And then there are just stone cold classics. So good but not perfect

Best Jimi album in my opinion. So many classics. This album has some dry sections, but The wind cries Mary makes up for all of them.

This album surprises me with how dialed-back his guitar playing is. With everything I know about Jimi Hendrix, I assumed it would be lightning solos the whole album, but instead it's always perfectly paired to the music. Really excellent stuff

lovely guitar wankery

Love how free this sounds, just a tiny bit over long for me

Muitas músicas boas aqui, Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Foxey Lady..

pretty pretty pretty good 3.5

Helll ya

classic, all the hits.

pas initeressant

Excited to listen to this one. It's jimi Hendrix what can you say?

Timeless classic, awesome playing from the whole trio. I would play this for 4/5 people I know.

My favourite of the three Hendrix albums so far. While virtuosic and brilliant at weaving in blues and jazz influences, I just don't feel this album is coherent enough for a 5.

An obviously solid album. It’s Hendrix. There is a large gap between the “hits” and the “others”. It doesn’t allow this album to fully flourish. The album recording process is not up to par either. But with all of that present, the hits carry this album to the top tier rankings. If you don’t know a single song on here then you clearly aren’t from this planet. Choice cut: Wind Cries Mary

Great, but even better live: Machine Gun!

++: Foxy Lady, Manic Depression, Red House, Can You See Me, I Don't Live Today, May This Be Love, Fire, 3rd Stone from the Sun, Are You Experienced +: Love or Confusion, Remember 9,4/10

I feel like there's a reason Jimi is regarded as one of the greats. A great album!

Classic rock at its best! Fantastic album!

Great album. I think this guy may be a star some day.

liked songs: Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary, Highway Chile Pretty good 3.75

A much-exulted record for a reason. Earth-shattering for ‘67.

Pure fun and creativity. Great musician.

Hendrix is not someone I would normally listen to on my own, but it is nice to be reminded just how groundbreaking he was.

Kinda crazy how this sounds less dated than the stones album we got last week. He’s the GOAT for a reason

I know this is Jimi's band and yes, he is an incredible guitar player, but can we talk about the drums, please? Just incredible.

All the great Jimi songs

Very groundbreaking. There is some great stuff on here. I am especially fond of Foxey Lady, since I’ve listened to The Cure’s cover of the song on Three Imaginary Boys a lot

It's honestly not really my thing but no denying the talent or influence. My favorite song of his is not on this album...Crosstown Traffic.

At the risk of divorce, I have to rate this one as technically impressive but still profoundly uninteresting to me.

i feel bad not giving this a 5, but its really not his best. his guitar is incredible of course but the songs arent really there

Boy could play Occasionally he played a little too much

The hits are amazing. The longer tracks have more noodling than I’m into but obviously with exceptional skill

this was ORIGINALLY a 3/5. obviously solid guitar work (it IS jimi hendrix after all) but i personally prefer harder rock. yes, my original rating was kinda skewed by my tastes. i liked “purple haze”, “foxey lady”, and “stone free” the best. HOWEVER, my rating was bumped up last minute because there was a “track” (aka bonus footage) that went behind the scenes and explained studio works, recording, etc. it was SO interesting. so instead of a 3/5, i give this album a 4/5.

While the guitar playing is out of this world, the tracks do tend to feel like a big blur

This is really great. I think psychedelic rock as a genre evolved and changed much following the release of this album, but I personally like this subtler psychedelic style. Honestly, this album is actually pretty all over the place in terms of sub-genre of rock. Lots of blues and R&B in this album. I don't really have a ton to say about it, other than it's pretty great, without really any dud songs, and some really excellent hits. Favorite Song(s): Hey Joe, May This Be Love, The Wind Cries Mary

Purple haze Great guitar

A part of me thinks that I'm giving this a 4 just because it's Hendrix. But then I think to myself, "does it even matter? It's Jimi Hendrix." I definitely think this album deserves all the praise it's been given over the years. Having never fully listened to a Hendrix album, I was surprised by the broad range of tone from each track. I was expecting more "vintage Hendrix" like Purple Haze, but there were quite a few tracks that were a significant departure from that iconic sound. That being said, the majority of the album does have that "Vintage Hendrix" tone, which tbh has never been a big favorite of mine, but it does really shine a spotlight on the guitar throughout the album. Also didn't realize how short each track was. Every song is short, simple, sweet, and to the point, and for the most part, I'm all about it. I think, for me, this does result in a few tracks being fairly "boring/repetitive" but nothing that betrays the albums own theme/tone. Favorite Tracks: May This Be Love - I actually had to pause and re-listen because I wasn't expecting a song like this 51st Anniversary - I love that pre-chorus breakdown thing

I mean, truly legendary work. Hendrix is so good, you don't even realize the album has started over. 8.3/10

Classic, nice album

Starting off with Purple Haze really set the tone. A fine experience, indeed.

3rd album. 3.75 stars. Overall a great collection by a legend, but the production on the album sucks- especially on the subtler, more nuanced tracks. But also it's amazing and interesting and groundbreaking

Hippy rock

This must have been a crazy listen in 1967. Still sounds so fresh 60 years later. Fun to hear more songs beyond the typical Purple Haze and Foxey Lady.

Have never been a huge Hendrix fan, but there is no denying his talent and influence on rock n roll. Jiminknew how to play guitar and was far ahead of his time. Too bad he died so young before we were ever able to see the depths of his talent. Some great hits on this album that I enjoyed hearing again.

Oh dear. I don't know if I dare to say this. I'm just not really into Hendrix. No doubt about his music-historical meaning and influence. But his music just doesn't do it for me. This album is also a bit ramshackle, you can hear it's not really a unity. And the sound is not optimal, especially the odd stereo-mix. Yes great songs and I want to mention 'Third stone from the sun' that isn't well known but that I like very much.

Well, it's a classic

It’s Hendrix, of course it’s great

The splitting between L/R channels would normally bother me but I think it is used so well here and doesn't span every song on the album. Hadn't listened to this front to back before but I am glad it popped up today, so good.

Hieno debyytti! Paikoitellen aika rajua kuunneltavaa eikä ihan helppoa 4/5

Juuri kuuntelin tämän eilen, mutta kelpaahan tuo mennä uudestaankin tänään. Kitararockin perusteos, ja syystä! Ehkä Electric Ladyland potkii enemmän, mutta kyllä tällekin nelonen tulee.

Yes, it‘s Hendrix, but that rhythm section is outstanding. Fav: Foxy Lady

Classic. Most of the songs have been overplayed, but still are so relevant and groundbreaking

Really enjoyable. Will revisit

This album gives the fussy baroque of 1967 psychedelia the right kick in the bell bottoms. The non-hits were a treat, not having heard them for ages. Holds up spectacularly, which is not something I'd say for his other albums.

People tend to pigeonhole Jimi Hendrix as acid rock, but this album, along with his later releases, demonstrates he was capable of so much more than that. There's the electric blues of "Hey Joe," the tender reflection of "May This Be Love" the lovely poetry of "The Wind Cries Mary" and the psychedelic churn of the title cut. Of all the rock stars who left us too early, he may be the one I most regret losing because I can't help but wonder where his muse may have led him if he'd had more time.

Haven't kissed the sky in a while. Was good listening to this again.

Its jimi. He plays guitar gud. What else? I mean in a way its slightly quaint at least compared to those math nerds who chug in metal but they wouldn't even exist without Hendrix. It was an experience and one worth having

Classic! Great album.

Fantastic album. I think my favorite of his

What an album. What an artist. I get the hype now.

Last of the 3 Hendrix albums on this list for me. Reading about this, I saw that the original International/UK release did not include the hits Purple Hazy and Hey Joe like the later US release included, so I opted to a build a playlist of the original release and listen to that. Hendrix is definitely heady. Great sound and vibe all around. The title track with that backwards guitar on those drums still sounds wild and far out almost 60 years later. I listened to it probably 20 times.
