Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Viktig, men jeg har aldri fått helt fot på Hendrix. Det går litt for sakte på et vis.
Ah! Men det er noe daukjøtt her, bluesete daukjøtt.
Fave.
This is a vibe of an album. Jimi oozes cool and the guitar feels so fluid. I am not a huge fan of the style of recording, it does give some plus points in feeling “earthy” and more like a live performance but it’s also a bit grainy and takes away some of the brilliance of the music. Anyway. It’s iconic for a reason and I really enjoyed it. Slightly too long but I make some allowances for genius. Enough small gripes that it’s not a 5 but definitely a 4 for me.
Beetje hard maar wel mooi
Stabilt album
This album is likely the most consequential release to date on 1001. Its familiarity, constant replication, and groundbreaking nature have undeniably created a significant legacy, which naturally comes with certain baggage. Personally, I'd argue that superior versions of some tracks now exist, a perhaps unpopular opinion. I suspect the reason some songs resonate more with me when performed by other artists lies in either the original production or Jimi's particular style. My analogy is akin to a pair of speakers pushed beyond their intended limits, leading to distortion during the more energetic or louder passages. While many bands excel at a raw sound, I personally find that the overall experience of these particular songs is diminished rather than enhanced in original form. Not all are like this but as this is a 60's album I will give the benefit of the doubt and list to an average of 4.
An iconic album including some really excellent and genre defining tracks. The album as a whole is longer than I remember and has some more experimental tracks in that way common to sixties albums. Hendrix's guitar playing is excellent and unmistakable and he creates a sound that is not only great to listen to but now defines a moment in cultural history.
Absolutely fantastic. Hendrix is a true master of his craft.
Really cool album, Hendrix was so cool
Great album. A lot more mellow songs than I remembered
A rock staple. Probably my favorite Jimi Hendrix record. I think the fat could be trimmed off this record and it would benefit from being a tight 13/14 songs, rather than the 17 on it. 9/10
love this record
So good! Great album from start to finish - solid 4.
This is a fun one. Let’s party!
A classic but it's not all hits.
some greats some mehs
It’s Jimi’s debut and features some of his most iconic hits so what’s not to like? I’ll be controversial and go against the straight-up 5; it’s a soft 4.5 for me, mainly due to the length. The sequencing makes the album feel a little stretched out. I’m really nitpicking, though, just because… I have to try to be more critical, someone told me recently!
I think Jimi's musical prowess is best exemplified by longer, more freeform jams (second half of Third Stone From The Sun). A polished 3 minute song from an album isn't going to exemplify his abilities as well. A great artist but likely better in a live setting than on an album. Regardless, this is obviously some great guitar playing and has most of his major hits (Purple Haze, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary). 7.25/10 (3.625/5)
Listened halfway (again). Was not a big fan of the songwriting but liked the sound and the awesome guitar playing.
Not the best Hendrix album, but a solid start for his career
Of all Jimi’s albums, this one is the most familiar to me. I haven’t listened to it in a while, but yes—it still sounds great. I like it.
downloaded 1,4,8,10,16 & 17. 3.5 stars. built a bed listening to the deluxe.
I distinctly remember the first time I discovered Jimi Hendrix in high school, never really taking the time to listen to his discography in it’s entirety, but knowing already that I was a fan of his work from “Purple Haze” alone. I’ve been a fan of psychedelic rock through the likes of Khruangbin and other adjacent bands that follow their style and sound but hearing the twangs and skills of Jimi’s guitar reminds me of why I admire psychedelic rock so much. Mark Speers sings with his guitar, and so does Jimi and seeing as Jimi was first, he probably laid the foundations for the sounds I know and love today. I was completely blown away by “Third Stone of the Sun” I didn’t think I’d like a song more than Purple Haze or Foxey Lady, but this song truly gave me that late 60s psychedelic experience I’ve always wondered about. Its transportive instrumentals and sparse vocals make it ambient but funky and cool. Contrasting that with “Red House” which is my other favourite song from this album (I rated both of these songs 5 stars, nothing else made it that high for me), the blue notes on this track were unreal. I have definitely been enjoying many of the blues albums I’ve been recommended through this generator so it makes me happy that there’s elements of blues, jazz and soul throughout this album. Jimi’s debut album was an incredible introduction to the talent him and his band brings to the table, as some of the reviews already stated, some of the best rock was created around this time and I can definitely feel it in this album. It’s sad knowing he is part of the 27 club, and it’s always hard not to imagine what he could’ve created had he lived longer. An amazing introduction to an amazing artist. Definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of his albums. Standout Tracks: “Third Stone from the Sun”, “Red House”, “Purple Haze”, “Foxey Lady”
7/10 definitive Jimi Hendrix. good stuff 4-24-2025
A classic
Great album.
So good. Just a lovely listening experience start to finish from the goat.
So I will preface this by saying that this is a damn good album and Hendrix was a standout and excellent guitarist. But something about this album... I dunno, I don't think it's overrated necessarily, but it's not a full 5/5 for me. Something about the songwriting, I think. It's still satisfying to listen to, though, and a very strong 4/5.
Jimi Hendrix is regarded as probably one of the best guitarists of the modern era. This era is full of really good protest music and art from the Vietnam war era and Woodstock. I'm a big fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival and Cream from this same era. I'm not too familiar with Hendrix's music though outside of "Purple Haze" and "All Along the Watchtower" - excited to give this one a listen! One thing to note about this album so far is that I love the drummer for TJHE but oh my god does the drum itself sound really bad. I'm sure it's because it was recorded extremely cheaply in 1967 but wow does it not sound great. The drummer is super talented though and I could tell if the recording was better - I would like it a lot more. The entire album feels like blues music has been draped over it with a fuzzy purple towel of sound that I really really appreciate. The song "Third Stone from the Sun" is absolutely a standout, being that it's an instrumental song I love how Hendrix's guitar tone lends so well to a psychedelic and cosmic feel of the song - there's also a lot of interesting production tricks on this song that give you the sensation of flying through space. It's brilliantly done! Great experiencing doing a deeper dive into a hugely influential figure in music - especially for a lot of the stuff I listen to today. Will definitely return to this one! Standout tracks are: "Purple Haze", "I Don't Live Today", "Fire", "Third Stone from the Sun", "Foxy Lady".
4.5
Red house — bluesy, my dad probably liked this track Purple Haze good
Okay so obviously Jimi Hendrix is The Man and this album and all the rest is great stuff, but it’s just not my stuff. I mean, I would go to town on this if it were a buffet at a wedding, but I wouldn’t order it on my own accord at a restaurant, you know?
Great
Great album. Classic. Not my favorite Jimi Hendrix album but clearly great
J'aime pas le blues rock. C'est peut-être le meilleur album de blues rock.
Long. Lots of hits. It’s Hendrix.
Really solid, some cool beats and basslines. Guitar work is great as to be expected. Top 3 Songs: Purple Haze Fire Hey Joe 7/10
first hendrix studio album. so groovy and perfect for a work day
Some absolutely amazing songs which is the best of Hendrix but the album is too long and with some songs that really should have just been cut so can't mark it 5 stars.
The Jimi Hendrix. Very classic, nothing to criticize. That guitar is on fire. Also, the drums, love the drums. This was the album my dad always recommended to me when I first started getting into rock music. The guitar god, the king of hard rock, so on and so forth. This is indeed an excellent album. Even after I got tired of hard rock, I still found it very pleasant to listen to. Although if I were to view this based on my personal taste, it might not be the kind of music I absolutely love. I mean, musically and objectively it deserves a 5/5, but it's probably a 4-4.5 to my personal preference.
Oh yes. Hits where it feels good.
Some fantastic songs, but a few duds.
Great guitar and rock&roll at its finest, but have to be in a specific mood for this.
Chill psychedelic rock
First half is just some of his best songs one after another
....
Guitar paradise! The gap between top and bottom songs is pretty wide in my opinion but there are a lot of songs in the middle that bolster the album Purple Haze May This Be Love Hey Joe Third Stone From the Sun Remember Stone Free Can You See Me Fire Highway Chile Are You Experienced? I Don’t Live Today Red House Manic Depression Foxey Lady Love or Confusion 51st Anniversary
Groovy, soulful, rock n roll psych blues.
3. An all time classic rock album. Great singing, great guitar playing, great drums. Not all the songs on the album are a hit but, when it is a hit it HITS. A nice mix of Rock, Blues, and Psychedelic rock. In general a nice album to sit and listen to. Favorite Song: Purple Haze Least Favorite Song: Fire Overall Score 8/10
well ok. it's great. should have listened to it earlier in my life.
One of many we lost way too soon.
Would listen again - not a no skip album for me, but just soooo damn good. A very high four. Faves: purple haze, manic depression, foxey lady, highway chile, red house.
Definitely feels like an 'album you should listen to before you die' - and I hadn't beyond knowing the hits from this. I am definitely not a psychedelic guitar fan at this point, but this is really quite good even when it's not my everyday taste.
Absolute quality.
Hendrix, you know how to rock, as Filmore once said "Respect the classics, man. It's Hendrix!"
I’ve been spoiled lately cause I’ve gotten a lot of album I’m already a fan of, this one included. It’s got a lot of influential psychedelic rock and the guitar tones and solos are earth shattering. The thing this album doesn’t get enough credit for is how good the band is, like the drumming and bass playing are stellar and probably way ahead of their time. Honestly this album has a few too many skips, but I still love this album.
great listen
Classique shut
Guitar playing is pretty good. Drums are Chad.
himi
Great. First time hearing about it
He sounds like the guy from RHCP I really liked it! Hoped it would be less rocky more R&B vibes but still very pleasant to listen to. Such a shame I couldnt listen to the words bc I was doing organic chemistry Also I still dont have my headphones
Badass
Solid work
Very close to 5 territory, just some of the non-hits of the album, and the long run time dragged it down a star. Still a superb album.
Very super
Heavy blues that influenced Zeppelin, Sabbath, and countless others.
This was an enjoyable listen. Obviously Hendrix is one of the greats, and his talent is almost incomprehensible. This album in particular didn't have any songs that really stood out to me, but each song was fun to listen to. It's a 3.5 but I'll give it a 4 because it's not as truly "middle of the road" as my other 3 albums.
Rockt
Enjoyed it, some familiar things but they seemed to fit together well in the context of the other songs - i guess thats an album!
I can respect this. Not something I will likely ever revisit. It was worth a listen though.
This must have been a revelation when it first dropped. There is some amazing music and guitar playing on Are You Experienced but also some filler so I'll have to go with a four.
Not really my stule
10/1001 There can be no denying, Hendrix had a unique gift that almost transcended music itself - an innate ability to make any sound he imagined come out of his fingertips at will. As a guitar great, Jimi is worth every gushingly enthusiastic word that has ever been written about him, of that I am sure. But are his songs any good? Well, yeah, they are but to be honest I could do a top *insert variable* albums list and easily neglect to include any Hendrix long players. Which is a shame, because I did enjoy listening to Are You Experienced? for the first time in a while. He may not be the best singer, and, despite the guitar gymnastics, a lot of this stuff is just based around some fundamental blues-rock building blocks. But, whereas Led Zep left me a bit cold, here everything is delivered with a lot of genuine soul and its all tastefully done. Some nice psychedelic sounds and very little filler - lesser-known songs such as Love Or Confusion and I Don't Live Today hold their own among the likes of (depending on which version of the album you are listening to) Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary and the title track. Really this should be a solid three from me, but I'm giving it a generous four - while it's not an album I personally return to often, as his debut I am mindful of the fact this must have been a pretty mindblowing sound to anyone listening in May 1967.
This album was so far ahead of it's time and change the rock world forever. Can you imagine hearing this for the first time in a climate filled with Beatles, Monkees, and Supremes
I know he was a genius but I was done by the end
Just a good one. What a legend
Classic, no notes
A bunch of all time, one of a kind classics, with some filler mixed in. Love Jimi's slower blues songs.
Rock classsic
Yes
Whilst not epitomising the “Experience” section of the artist name (this would come in the following albums) the actual experience of this is a subtly masterful psychedelic rock... experience. There’s a mix of sunshine-y major chord riffs (i.e. Remember), heavy-hitting blues rock classics (i.e. Foxy Lady), and incredibly unique psychedelic tracks, the finest of which undoubtedly within the title track. Never before and never since has a single piano note played repeatedly sounded this good. Well, maybe 40 years later on Get Innocuous!. But that doesn’t have the crazed shifting percussion, imitating short gusts of wind, or something. The blueprint for showcasing the 60s/70s psychedelic rock sound. The precursor to so many more incredible albums made by people off their heads on drugs.
One of the first albums I purchased. Almost no misses on the album
4.5
yay jimi hendrix absolute psych-rock legend, nobody does it like him
I’m not being critical I just like to put silly stuffs down. Purple haze- the only song I knew first doing this because of jojos. Reminds me of my current boyfriend, besides that genuinely a banger Manic depression - real.. but the mental health stuff in not a happy tone but it a more upbeat tone was fire. Hey Joe - shooting someone for cheat and running away to the south fire!!!! Love or confusion- fire I relate to this a little bit bc it’s hard to genuinely tell but burrr May this be love- it’s like a little date ig?? Banger though!! I don’t live today- acid trip. Def listening to this when I try shrooms. The wind cries Mary- I like the slow pacing it feels like something i could listen to on the roof of my house kinda like starless by king crimson just something I can chill with. Fire- the transition from the wind cries Mary was so dif made me jump a bit. I fw it heavy and is straight gas. Third stone from the sun- aliens 👽👽👽👽 anyways I fw the drums in this heavy. Foxey lady- lowk my fav rn but that could change. I like the intro a lot and yk some women are foxey 😛 (kill me I have no rizz) Are you experienced- another acid trip one Stone free- JOLYNEE?? My fav so I alr listened to it bc of her having stone free as a stand but I fw it heavy 51st anniversary- I like the guitar in this a lot Highway childe- the description of the guy lowkey sounds like how some people would describe me but this is in my top 3 for the album rn Can you see me- one of those songs my mom would sing religiously. Remember- this is like the part two to foxey ngl. I rlly like this one too. Red house- last one on the album the word yonder is such a 5 dollar word bc I don’t hear anyone ever say it. I like the slower pacing in this and it’s a song I could sleep to tbh Overall I give this album a 8/10 some of the songs did not slap but I would still listen to again but most where really good i would listen to this album again!!
I still heard new stuff even this time around
Not bad
According to Neal, “not the greatest songwriter, but good at sounds.”
Awesome
Great guitarist and musician. Lots of hits on this album.
Incredible debut, a couple songs here and there fade together but as a whole a real statement
I feel like Hendrix has lost his luster for me. I like this album. He’s amazing. He took what Chuck Berry did and went further.
This is such a classic. Jimi changed music forever.
Great music.
Still a fantastic listen, but I will put it half a step below Axis: Bold as Love. Its a little more psychedelic and the production is a little more thin in keeping with the style at the time, which I'm liking a bit less than Axis. But still, this album is just a hit machine, similar to Axis. Purple Haze, Manic Depression, Hey Joe, Fire, Foxey Lady. And everything inbetween is great too.
This marks the point where I have received and reviewed all three Hendrix studio albums as part of this project. Very rarely do I find it necessary for artists to have multiple inclusions on this project, but Jimi Hendrix is definitely one of those exceptions. All three of his albums not only helped to push the needle not only on psychedelic rock, but on black artists in rock music. All three albums are chock full of outstanding talent. Regarding "Are You Experienced" specifically, his first studio album, he truly launched his career with some of his best work. You have absolutely iconic tracks like "Purple Haze", "The Wind Cries Mary", and "Foxey Lady" on this album. These songs, and all of the songs for that matter, show off that amazing guitar prowess that you would expect from Hendrix. All in all, a great debut from Hendrix that would carry on into a short but very legendary, noteworthy career.
Альбом вообще классный, никогда до этого не слушал RnB, понравилось, очень вайбово
Bluesy, good album. Great voice and skills. Starts and finishes strong but middle is weak at points
Fantastic, for me the greatest guitarist that ever lived
jimi
What a great time!
Before listening to this, I always I had the idead that Jimi Hendrix made very boring, overly noodly music. After listening to this, I now understand what all the fuss is about. There's the technicality, yes, but the songs are also very substantive and memorable. Very good record. Key tracks: Purple Haze (only the North American edition) Hey Joe Fire Foxy Lady
Jimi 8/10
1967 is arguably the greatest year in music history. This album would be up there with the best but there are some good, not great songs here. Jimi is no doubt the goat guitarist though.
It’s a one trick pony but it’s a good trick.
he has better but it’s still jimi hendrix. like of course it’s great
it's hard to understand how impactful and new this sound really was because so much music was inspired after he tore the rule book up. He was a master at his craft and I only wish I heard this at its debut to fully enjoy it. 4.5 for me
Jimi Hendrix mastered psychedelic rock when everyone else was still mucking about trying to figure out how to make cool sounds with their gee-tars. Incredible that he was practically running laps around these fools. Don't need to genius to figure that out though.
Right, so Purple Haze is great, but the rest wasn't that amazing. Third stone from the sun surprisingly good.
first listen some famous singles and an all around solid album
No Electric Ladyland but still great. Favourite Songs: Foxy Lady, May This Be Love, Fire, Are You Experienced. Least Favourite Songs: Can You See Me, Remember.
Awesome as always
Really good, the only real miss for me was Stone Free because of that maddening cowbell. The distortion, especially on on Third Stone From The Sun and Are You Experienced? is euphoric. I used to listen to this and Electric Ladyland while driving around the mountains to go skiing (great driving albums). One time I picked up a hitchhiker, I never had but for some reason I was inspired to, while listening to Electric Ladyland. He asked me if I was listening to Hendrix and then played the air drums and head banged for the next 15 minutes until I dropped him off in town. Music truly does bring people together.
The highs are *high* (Purple Haze, Manic Depression, I Don’t Live Today, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, Foxes Lady) and the lows honestly sound like B-sides from The Who which is still pretty good (Love or Confusion).
I have always thought the production sounds a bit muddy, but the performances are great, and I especially dig the drumming of Mitch Mitchel. 4.5 stars
Oozing with creativity and packed with virtuosic guitar playing, this album ushered in the psychedelic era more than any other. Hendrix’s career wasn’t long but it was impactful, and this is probably his most impactful release. Best song: Third Stone from the Sun
Few debut albums have changed rock music the way Are You Experienced did. Jimi Hendrix didn’t just play guitar, he completely redefined it. His playing on this album is unbelievable, bringing an energy and sound that was groundbreaking at the time and still feels fresh today. From the explosive ‘Purple Haze’ to the dreamy ‘The Wind Cries Mary,’ the album is packed with incredible moments. Songs like ‘Hey Joe’ and ‘Fire’ show his raw power, while ‘Are You Experienced?’ closes the album on a strange, almost otherworldly note. His lyrics are also original and creative, adding even more personality to the music. This album didn’t just set a new standard, it changed rock forever. A legendary debut that still stands as one of the greatest. 9.3/10
There are some absolute classics on here for sure but this isn’t something I would choose to listen to as a whole
As a 1-year-old, I remember rocking out to this on my Playschool record player...Ok. Not really. I'm most familiar with this album amongst Hendrix albums and coincidentally, its my favorite. Classic riffs (not that I really know what a riff is by definition) and a definitive groove persists through each song.
Brilliant album. Bought it back soon after it came out.
Great stuff man! Good stuff!
I'm not a big Hendrix fan but it was good listening
I probably need to listen to this again more locked in since it was more in the background while I worked.
This is my first time listening to a Jimi Hendrix record. I like the song "Hey Joe". The focus of the record is absolutely shredding on the guitar, and I don't love that too much. "Love Or Confusion" is a good example. I can tell that the guitar part is sick, but I don't really enjoy the guitar being center stage in every song. I also don't play the guitar, so to me it all kind of blends together into "guy shredding noises", and I can't really pick out the impressive individual parts. "May This Be Love" is a nice song. I like the percussion and the subtler guitar parts. "Fire" is fun. It sounds a little brit-punky, and I dig that. "Foxey Lady" is the first song I've heard before. "Stone Free" is the best song so far for me. I like this one a lot. More awesome percussion. "Remember" is also a lot of fun. I enjoyed this album. Jimi has a very iconic sound, and I liked the songs that strayed from that sound the most. I just may not be a Jimi guy. 7/10
Muy bueno pero no llega al nivel de Electric Ladyland. 4 alto.
Great album with lots of hits. Also discovered May This Be Love, which was a fave of mine. Loved the variety of songs too.
What a debut, pure power and ferocity. Weird to say, but the drumming sort of makes the record and one realizes Hendrix is a distinct and pretty underrated vocalist. All the hits are fine, if a bit overexposed at this late date, but the secondary songs (e.g., "Remember," "Third Stone from the Sun") move this into the top class and the coolness factor puts Clapton to shame. The ancillary/additional cuts on the reissues, which include several gems (e.g., "Highway Chile"), make it all the more impressive.
Jimi Hendrix Experience. This has so many versions Original UK track listing and US. With most copies now including tracks that weren’t on each other. I think most people listen to the 17 track version now and really it’s the way to go. This is Hendrix at his simplest songs in a way everything is tight and even with 17 tracks on the newer editions it’s doesn’t clock over the hour mark. These songs pack a punch and has a different psychedelic edge that only Hendrix can provide 4/5
Soo much more that the greatest hits packages. This justifies the legend, so much more nuances.
Quite certain I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about this album. I don't think I've ever listened all the way through until today, and it is remarkable. My standouts: Manic Depression, May This Be Love, The Wind Cries Mary
(this review is for the original UK tracklist.) this solves a lot of the issues I had with Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs a couple days ago. in that review, I mentioned my burnout when it comes to the classic blues rock sound, but I mean, Hendrix is Hendrix! if you need ME to tell you he's in a league of his own, you should probably get out more! whereas Layla felt, to my ears, fairly reserved and polite, this is fully in-your-face. for as much as Derek and The Dominos pulled out all the stops in terms of their production and instrumentation, there's just no competing with a trio in the raw, especially one with Jimi Hendrix at the helm. the interplay between Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell is undeniable; the kinship they all felt with boundary-pushing small groups in the jazz world at the time, particularly the mid-sixties John Coltrane Quartet, is deeply felt throughout this tracklist. Mitchell's drumming in particular is show-stopping, to the point that I sometimes find myself focusing on him more than Hendrix! i also appreciate the very rough production and mix, which perfectly matches the Experience's unfiltered approach. Hendrix's blown-out guitar tone and experimentation with distortion and feedback point in the direction of future trends in guitar music like heavy metal, noise rock, totalism and a whole lot more. it wouldn't surprise me if Hendrix emboldened later avant-garde and fusion guitar icons like Sonny Sharrock and John McLaughlin to keep pumping up the volume! to this day, he's revered as one of the finest guitar soloists of all time (for good reason!), but his abilities as a writer of riffs and songs were also incredibly strong. you've got heavy, bluesy earworms ("Foxy Lady", "Manic Depression", "Fire", "Remember"), mind-altering slabs of psychedelia ("I Don't Live Today", "Third Stone From the Sun", the title track), and even a tender ballad ("May This Be Love")! this definitely gave me the itch to return to Axis and Electric Ladyland soon. maybe some of the live records too. strong 8/10.
Заглавный трек крутой
It would be a shame to say I'm a psychedelia/acid fan. And the first time I heard this album I didn't connect a ton with it. But today I think I must be in a different headspace because it's better now. The mix is a bit weird though, or maybe that's just the version on Spotify, there's a lot of stuff only happening in the right channel. I still don't think I fully get entirely what the fuss is about with Jimmy Hendrix Standouts Love Or Confusion The Wind Cries Mary Third Stone From The Sun 4/5
absolute banger of an album that i sort of zoned out on, but i loved the vibes.
Really good overall, the quality never really falls off. Impressive instrumental work with an inspired vocal performance that really seals the package. Complete. Best song: Purple Haze Worst song: Can You See Me
This mixing is all over the place. I can't tell if the album would benefit from a complete technical overall, with more of a studio sound and a mixing pattern that doesn't slam certain instruments in completely different sonic pockets, or if it benefits from everything sounding like its orbiting around some kind of celestial cavernous megachurch. Was it always intended to be overheard playing on Peter Quills' walkman? A distant memory of humanity trying to reconnect with a possible way to experience itself. It's also perplexing why the lifestyle was celebrated. Jimi doesn't really sound like he's having fun. I imagine what this is going to be what it's like for future generations to listen to Future.
It's Jimi.
I have to be very picky or everything is getting a 5 - this is unbelievable but it doesn't have most of my favourite Hendrix tracks, so scored against his own catalogue it gets a 4.
I like the energy, but a little manic for my tastes.
Overall solid album, groundbreaking guitar work, innovative use of stereo mixing
could i write poetry to this? n
Local Seattle artist! Jimi Hendrix is always a fun listen. Obviously, great guitar work. First three songs hit hard right off. May This be Love is a nice slower jam, with some great riffs. Rest of the album is solid, ending with the wonderful Red House. Best Song: May This be Love
This is way better than the last Jimi Hendrix album I got. So fun to listen to! I definitely want to revisit it.
I like Jimi Hendrix. Most of the songs on here were great, but a couple songs missed for me. Like the directional audio though, which is a theme of my tastes
Hendrix is classic rock guitar, and an almost whimsical vocal style that was pretty cool to listen to. He died too young.
Classic and still good. Though, with headphones, quite unsettling. Wasn't aware, to what extent he experimented with then pan knob.
This would have been a perfect album if Spotify hadn’t added 6 songs to the end. 6 songs too long and those six songs clearly stand out as more boring than the original track list.
One of my favourite throw-away bits by comedian Bill Hicks was about Jimi Hendrix. "My Man JIMI!" *Guitar noises* "YEAAAHHH!" *More guitar noises* "YEAAAHH!!" *More guitar noises* "Man he was a f****** alien, man. No doubt about it, man. UFO dropped him off, said 'Jimi show us it's done, we'll pick you up in 28 years, alright?'" The man was a guitar god, and this album is nothing but absolute bangers. Addictive guitar riffs, effortless guitar solos, and just cool ass songs throughout the whole tracklist; and thankfully Apple Music has the US edition because I think it's a much stronger than the UK/international one. Hendrix is one those artists that I feel is universally loved, or at least liked, and it is entirely well deserved. 'Are You Experienced' is probably him at his absolute best commercially. This is teetering between a 4 and a 5 rating, but I ultimately decided on a high 4/5. The reason being is that I would argue his follow up albums 'Axis' and 'Electric Ladyland' are tied for his best from a more musical perspective as he evolved as an artist. But this LP is still super fun, trippy, and all round brilliant. I feel like even if you're the kind of person to scoff at classic rock in general, this just might be the kind of album to turn you around on it. Personal highlights: ‘Purple Haze’, ‘Hey Joe’, ‘I Don’t Live Today’, ‘The Wind Cries Mary’, ‘Fire’, and ‘Third Stone From The Sun’.
thank GOD for my several-months-ago experiences with axis bold as love, granting me some clarity about Ultra Popular And Beloved Guitar Player Jimi Hendrix Who Should Be Intuitive To Pretty Much Everyone But Eluded Me For Years Somehow. in that way i have to give him some credit for genuinely being so distinct that my expectations from the likes of jazz and prog didnt help me much, and were maybe even a bit counter-intuitive! my moment of clarity with axis and its psychedelic tapestry was that the cadence of sound coaxed from jimi's guitar matters often more then the individual notes he's playing...and i think even here on a more sonically conservative album (strictly compared to axis, goes without saying this was even more insane for the time), where his playing has a slightly more lyrical quality , its the stubborn part of my ears that is finally fixed. this isnt one of my fave albums or anything, i dont prefer it to axis i dont think, but it finally all sounds colorful and firey and In Place to me. electric ladyland might kick my head in if i revisit it idk
Classic. Enjoy most of the songs.
He’s a genius. 4
Some good tunes, many familiar already
I'm certainly experienced now...
It was definitely not what I expected. Pretty sweet
I do really like this album be it has a few too many dud moments to make it a full five stars, but great nonetheless 4.5*
Look this album rocks and was all over the Waynes World OST but Jimmy Hendrix is real bad vibes. He’s super talented but his songs really bum me out based on his musical choices, lyrical subject matter and special effects. It just clicked on this listen. I found myself enjoying the drumming this go around. Especially on Manic Depression
7/10. Would listen again.
Some really classic songs on this album.
good classics
I would not drive around blasting this, but there are some tracks here that are musical masterpieces and phenomenal songs.
More bluesy than I thought.
Are You Experienced is a powerful debut and a thrilling introduction to Jimi Hendrix's groundbreaking sound. Even after 60 years, his guitar playing remains utterly compelling, with tracks like "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," "Highway Chile," "Fire," and the iconic "Foxey Lady" still shining bright. The musicianship from all three band members is outstanding, but it's Hendrix's charisma that truly bursts out of the speakers. However, the album can feel a bit disjointed, especially in the extended remaster versions available on DSPs. While the experimental tracks may have been revolutionary at the time, some may now come across as meandering, affecting the album's pacing and making it feel slightly on the long side.
This album changed the history of music and high school me's life. Hey Joe's lyrics have always made me uncomfortable though. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
There's some iconic songs on this album, but that's about what it has going for it.
Just some great fuzz and solos. i wish the version differences were more clear. make sure to at least listen to a version including the singles.
Quintessential psychedelic rock album. It’s no acid bold as love but pretty damn good
Favourite songs: Purple Haze, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary, Stone Free, Foxey Lady, Manic Depression, Red House Least favourite songs: Third Stone From the Sun 4/5
A pretty incredible album. Tons of bangers on this one. I prefer it to the other Jimi album, as it's less noisy. It's still not my favorite type of classic rock in terms of sonorousness, but it really holds up.
Pretty good although i agree some parts were pretty noodly. Tracks like purple haze and stone free are really good though
Solid. Listened to the UK version. Was great.
This album is full classics from his too short career, so comes over more like a best of than an actual album. And includes both of my favourite tracks, Highway Chile, and Manic Depression. And also some superb new to me tracks like May This Be Love. A sort of Hendrix plays Green song. Over all a really good album, but is it worth a 5, no not quite. A really high 4 though
Superb stuff.
Great album by a legend who died far too young. Don't do drugs kids, but if you do, then not so much you end up choking on your own vomit, It's not a good look. Musically, it goes from straight heavy blues, to some experimental guitar and production work with 'Are You Experienced?' The whole thing is good from start to finish. Purple Haze is such a great opener. 'Third Stone From The Sun' is immense and rambling. Excellent stuff.
slayed.
Great album, not perfect in my opinion though.
pretty great, bummer about all the drugs though
No need to repeat the orthodoxy of Hendrix changing the guitar forever, but his albums were not amazing works in themselves. This one is a good debut album in the traditional sense, though the original UK version did not have 'Purple Haze' and 'Hey Joe' on it. His "yeah baby I'm groovy" schtick is pretty laughable and quite a few songs are fairly plain. 'I don't live today' is a particular low-light. Listening to it again with fresh ears 'Love or confusion' is a standout. Other tracks ar clearly much more influential. A good start from a world changing, history making artist, but maybe not such an amazing album.
This is a great album, and Jimi Hendrix is an amazing guitarist, however I'm not sure why some artists have multiple albums in this challenge that seem very similar to the last one I reviewed. Its NOT 1001 artists to listen to before you die!
Outrageous in its influence. It's not higher only because Electric Ladyland exists.
It is what it is. Jimi being crazy good, even though nowadays you learn his moves in Guitar 102.
Great album
A great listen with some of his best tracks
Cool, smooth, experimental. Great album.
I like blues, I like guitar music. Nevertheless it is sometimes difficult to hear Jimi Hendrix. After hearing it twice: 4 stars as a tribute to the great guitarist
It isn't a personal favorite but it's reputation is earned. I appreciate it slightly more than I actually love it, I think the vocals and songwriting aren't as groundbreaking as the overall sound.
Jimi slay guitar! Debut or greatest hit album? Nine of the songs were hits that got radio play through the 80s. Fire and Stone Free still rock, Third Stone should have been left on the cutting room floor. The man was a poet that can wield an ax. That’s what I’m talkin bout (4.3*s)
Jimi has so much talent, charisma, and swagger it's impossible not to love him. It's also impossible not to give this album a high ranking, the fact that it's his debut is even more nuts. It's stacked with top tracks and the whole thing is fantastic. His guitar playing is genius level and his lyrics paint vivid scenes, what a sound overall. So much gold here.
Surprisingly, this is my first full sit down listen of this album and I have been missing out. The entire album is great and winds through a lot of different styles. I really liked the psychedelic rock sounds of the title track. Jimi's singing often gets overlooked due to his guitar skills but he has brings swagger that works well. Def agree with Jimi's decision to have the album cover changed on the US release as that one has become iconic...3.75.
Are You Experienced was one of the first albums I ever bought. Used to get regular play many years back. It's been a while since I've spent extended time with Jimi Hendrix but I'm always pleased when I do. While Jimi is established as a star, Mitch Mitchell gets wildly overlooked as a drummer (Noel Redding as a bassist too). Their range of frantic and melodic creativity always made them stand out and push the psychedelic/blues rock genre to new heights. Always been a Jimi fan. Shame we lost him so early. Always liked side 2 better. Some of the songs on the extended CD release are worth including as well. 3.66 stars
Nice jimi album a few good tracks
Gets a 4 due to some staple singles, but I’m a little burnt out on Hendrix. Some of the lesser known songs are a bit jammy and melodically uninteresting which is a shame.
Ingen tvivl om at han dannede skole for utallige musikere efter ham. Fed plade.
Great album. Kinda bad luck it came in a specific run for me. Had dire straits and Louvin brothers right before the high both have basically 0 distortion in the strings. I know Hendrix was kind of a pioneer with the distortion, just became a bit overused as the album went on. Liked the real bluesy tune and did not care for the psychedelic tune. Everything else seemed a good mix of the two styles. The first bars of Purple Haze are just fantastic.
so many hits
This album is the gold standard for guitar playing. I give a mediocre to the song structures and singing otherwise though. The album did sometimes feel a tad repetitive as well, with songs like Hey Joe kinda going nowhere.
Unbelievable guitar! Fun, up-tempo rock tunes. Overall a great sound. Will keep in the library for future listens! Low 4
Amazing jimi top guitarist all time
Did you know that Jimi was a good guitarist? Jimi was a good guitarist. It probably means that he's a bit under-rated as a songwriter to be honest, and songs like Wind Cries Mary showcase just how good he is on that front. Occasionally, this album descends a little into high-quality jams, which is fine, but it would probably be a better 45 minute album than a 60 minute one in my opinion
Classic. Iconic. Fun.
Very nice
This is an album that i'm ashamed to say that i've probably never sat and listened to front to back, even though i'm intimately familiar with like 75% of the songs on here.
A classic. Naturally.
I'm listening to the version available on streaming, which include all tracks from the british and american versions. This record is nothing short of fantastic, specially as a debut album. I've been a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix for ever now... his bands' "sloppy" playing is so lively, from the funky but complex rhythms employed by the stunning performances of Mitch Mitchell (one of the goats!) to Hendrix's tasteful and expressive guitar lines, this record is a great showcase of what these guys had to offer. The songs are incredibly remarkable, with good & vivid lyrics dealing on themes of drug usage and out of body experiences, sex, crime, all that hedonistic shit with a very poetic base. Not only that but its all super catchy as well, "Fire" is amazing, as well as "Manic Depression", "Foxey Lady", "Purple Haze", "Hey Joe", "3rd Stone from the Sun" and "Wind Cries Mary". It is not as ambitious and psychedelic as what i feel is their magnum opus, Electric Ladyland, but it is still one of the greatest blues rock albums i have heard.
I think I like AXIS better, but this has more iconic songs on it!
Another album I’ve listened to quite a bit, but probably not in 30 years. Holds up better than most.
Jimi Hendrix… what can I say? I went thru a whole Jimi Hendrix phase in high school, along with other artists. He is so talented, it’s unbelievable.
purple haze hey joe may this be love the wind cries mary third stone from the sun
dope
I haven't revisited Jimi Hendrix since finding I really didn't like his music while in high school during the height of new wave and punk. Wow, I stand corrected, I'll definitely be listening to this album again...and again.
I like et, red house ist meine fave:)
great!
Pretty good
love!!
It's Jimi what can I say!
Jimi Hendrix, wat wilje meer :) prachtig album met een experimentele touch, houd ervan beste songs: purple haze, manic depression, hey joe, the wind cries mary, foxey lady en higway chile slechste: third stone from the sun
A lot of great songs, seems almost like progressive rock in parts
Electric and emotive and most of all innovative. I’m guessing the reversing of the tape technique was pretty mind-boggling back then. Hendrix is what every frontman should desire to be.
#235. This rating is probably kind of obvious. Hendrix is often considered one of the best guitarist out there, at least from this time frame, and this album is often on lists of greatest rock albums. And we'll, who the fuck am I to disagree? 4/5: fantastic.
It's Jimi
The first half of this album is godly, the second half drifts a bit. Even though this is one of my all time favorites, I have to be honest I rarely play it all the way through. It's a bit long... cut 20 minutes, if probably give it 5 stars.
Great rock album. Good flow to the album, was a great listen.
long and not fast enough for my taste but objectively sick
Far out, man
This is what people think of when they think about Jimi. I don’t often listen to more than the “popular” songs so it was fun to listen through the full album.
It's Jimmy, what more do you need? Greatest guitarist that ever lived is always welcome. The tunes are solid and the licks are sublime. This one didn't grab me as much as the other so 4 stars but it's still all good.
Hendrix is unquestionably a god. Definitely on the Mt Rushmore of guitarists. They say he could fill a room with sound. Are You Experienced? Is incredible at times. The title track, Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary etc are the highest of highs. But it’s too long, there are lot of forgettable songs. 8.3/10
I appreciate the musicianship overall. And this is impressive for a debut album. This cacophony of sound for some reason causes me anxiety. May this be Love is a little more my speed and the drums are so good. On the track Are you Experienced, I enjoyed the stereo mixing. I can see that this album was very influential and it had some.solid stuff, but it's a bit much for me.
Gotta give Jimi some love!
An album full of songs that you know but is overly long and lacking focus so loses the cohesiveness of a classic album and feels a bit more like a greatest hits album. Feels like it was recorded over the course of weeks rather than days. To use as a comparison; The Hendrix album 'Axis bold as love's feels like a cohesive work of art of an album that feels like it was recorded in a week. Not cobbled together from multiple studio days
I had this album on CD when I was in high school, I'm not sure what happened to it but I listened to it a ton back then. It's a great album and I still really like the less popular songs like "Stone Free" and "51st Anniversary" I think the latter song has a nice groovy vibe to it. The whole album is really good though. I'm sure I will be listening to this one many more times.
Great mix of psychedelic and blues. Obviously Hendrix’s guitar playing stands out, but the band works well together as a whole. Just a few songs always from being a truly incredible album. 4/5 Will listen again
he is good at guitar
Are you experienced? Have you ever been experienced? I really love this lyric. So many iconic tracks on this album, but I still find it to be slightly imperfect overall - a little bloated in places with meandering tracks that don’t add much. Fave Tracks: Purple Haze, Third Stone From the Sun, Are You Experienced? 4.1/5
this was quality - all the best jimi songs I can remember
Very good and listenable, went through it twice in fact.
Kova! Vähä liian pitkä
Classic Hendrix. A left handed musical genius. This can get a bit trippy, honestly, but Jimi makes it work. Several classics on this album.
great album
This was absolutely an amazing album, but I must admit it didn't blow me away as much as I was expecting. Of course, it can't be understated how influential and groundbreaking this album was, but it just didn't impress me as much as an almost 21 year old in 2024 as it did to people in 1967. But that's not to say I didn't like it, the guitar riffs were absolutely amazing, and I have always underestimated how great of a vocalist Jimi is. But it is very long, and while these moments are few and far between, it does at times drag on just a little bit. But on the whole, still a fantastic album, and an all time classic that I am glad to have finally heard.
Seminal. Some amazing tracks.
Solid four and a half album. The first half of the record is *chef's kiss*, just perfect; it contains most of Hendrix's career highlights. Sadly, it does not reach five star status for me because the second half is not as solid as the first one.
Favorite(s): Are you experienced? & Can you save me Least Favorite: Manic Depression
I got this record when I was a kid and thought it was the coolest. One of his better offerings IMO. But still there’s something about some Hendrix that sometimes feels unorganized and unfinished
Definitely my favourite album of his. Really close to a 5, but it doesn't keep me the whole way through. A few songs I would skip. Will I listen to again: 80%
Classic rock album.
Pretty cool 😎😎
This is not a perfect album, but it’s damn close. So many great (GREAT) songs for a debut album. Jimi absolutely shreds on so many songs and the drummer is so good.
When you listen again to this album you realize that what Hendrix did was take the blues apart. It’s almost like an analog form of sampling. Riffs and runs and parts of chord progressions form the spine of the music and then he dismantles the rest of the genre by pushing techniques further than they had ever been pushed before. Hendrix was a true blues man.
This album came out in '67, when I was ten, and not quite ready for it. Then it 1969 and my attitude on music was changing quickly. Listening to it now, I can hear the genius of his playing in a whole new way.
A really good album. Unfortunately, it sounds a bit flat. Maybe that's because of my equipment. 4/5
A good album, I loved Purple haze, Manic Depression and May This Be Love the most. But the whole album was solid. Jimi Hendrix did some really good music, definitely one of the greats.
Wild to hear some of these songs for the first time after hearing others for like decades.
I really like this album… for the first half. It starts to drag around Foxey Lady. I’ve always preferred Axis to this one.
what a talent
A classic
Is it a surprise that this is a great album? A true innovator who changed guitar music forever, it doesn't get much better than this.
It's a good album, but I think I just like his others more.
Purple Haze and Hey Joe are classics. Rest is great too 4/5
3.5
classic aber werd ich es jemals wieder hören?
Near perfect record. -1 for hey Joe 🥱
\\m// Game changing album from a game changing guitar player
my least favourite jimi hendrix album but a banger nonetheless
It's a classic for a reasson
So fun to listen to and I realised I know more Jimmy Hendrix songs than I thought
What a strong debut album, damn.
Guitarra!! No hay nada más que decir.
Niet zo hype als ik dscht maar nog steeds lekker
Excellent
Some of Jimi’s most well known songs on this.
This is a debut album from someone who has paid his dues. Hendrix puts his guitar virtuosity on display with a variety of sounds. Did a bit of research and found that the original album did not include legendary material like "Purple Haze", " Hey Joe" and "The Wind Cries Mary". These were part of CD compilations that came later.
FAVO: Hey Joe, May this be love, The wind cries Mary, Fire, 51st anniversary, Highway Chile, Red House
Lots of songs I grew up loving on the radio but didn’t know who wrote them. A classic
Really glad i gave this one another listen. With someone as masterful at the guitar as hendrix, its his subtlety when he could be ostentatious that exemplifies his brilliance. The delicate balance he strikes between his guitar playing and the rest of the instrumentation is remarkable, and it allows those great guitar riffs to shine through all the more. Really love the infusion of bluesy and psychedelic sounds too. Its a little long for me to be a 5, but its close.
Lots of classics. All of it sounds similar to me
4.13
I found this one a bit repetitive, but it’s definitely innovative, loud, impressively constructed. Hendrix making sounds come out of his guitar nobody had heard prior, and he’s more introspective and varied lyrically than I had noticed before. Solid listen.
album is good thats all i have to say its just good no complaints just good 4/5
I rather enjoy this album good artist with real talent
A couple of lulls keep this from being perfect, but it’s damn close.
this guy fucks.
I have never been a big Jimi Hendrix fan, but this album was much better than I expected!
There are a lot of great songs on this album. Highlights for me are Hey Joe, May This Be Love, Fire, and Foxey Lady.
Hey Joe, Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary .. Klassiker. Immer noch ein toller, unerreichter (Gitarren-)Sound
The wonderful, crazed guitar, excellent songs, warm voice... of Jimi Hendrix. From the outset, this is a great album. Lots of fantastic songs. There are one or two that slightly fill but there is so much to love here. It is only second to Hendrix' later album, Axis: Bold as Love, which is near perfect, with tighter songs and more of a united feel throughout. The drumming is clearly excellent on this, but sometimes slightly overcuts the song/singing/guitar-playing instead of playing under it, a small concern as its wonderful drumming, but at times could have been reigned in ever so slightly.
Songs I Liked Purple Haze Manic Depression Hey Joe The Wind Cries Mary Fire Foxy Lady Are You Experienced Stone Free Red House
I can't believe his album is almost 60 years old and even more amazed this was his debut album. One hell of a beginning. First I have to mention, this album cover reminds of a cartoon book about a pissed off cat who's a Red Sox fan, my son had as a kid. Ha to throw that out there. Can't say I'm a huge Hendrix fan, but it's not too hard to recognize greatness. This album could almost be a greatest hits album. So many classics I have not heard in a very long time. A very good album that keeps you rocking all the way through. Sure there's some tripped out stuff. But we're dealing with the 60's here. Some great lines too. Love the lines, "You don't care about me. I don't care about that." And from my favorite tune off this album, Are You Experienced, "Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful." Third Stone from the Earth was an acid tip for the ears. Ha. 56 years late, but I'm confident this was the first time I have listened to the album all the way through. Great blast from the past. Great tunes. No wonder this guy is a legend. Personally, I can't get to a 5, but a solid 4 for sure. 4
Jimi Hendrix was my original guitar hero. In middle school I was a Hendrix superfan but since then, as my tastes have changed, I started finding Hendrix was becoming a little trite to me. Of course, Hendrix and his music is the opposite of trite but I fear history - though he helped make it - has not been kind to his music. I still listen to a lot of the big songs by him but I think a greatest hits album is about all you need. 4 because of importance.
4.5 I went through a big Jimi Hendrix kick in high school, but for whatever reason, I haven’t really gone back to revisit a lot of his music since (I probably have Nirvana, Brand New, The Smiths, and Bright Eyes to blame for sending me down a sadboi rabbit hole around this time). Thankfully, this was exactly the reminder I needed - what an absolute shockwave of an album, the kind that feels like the only proper way of appreciating is by cranking it as loud as you can (while being respectful of your neighbors). Everyone knows Hendrix is one of the greatest guitarists of all-time, but it’s really hard to describe to someone why that is without just playing some of his work. He’s not busting out crazy speed metal-esque guitar solos, he’s not drastically redefining song structure or conventions, he’s not even playing in the most particularly polished way for that matter, and yet, the guy just seems to have a way of communicating with his guitar unlike anyone else, in a way that it almost feels like the guitar has a voice of its own. It feels passionately and thoughtfully executed while also managing to feel effortless, and once again, a reminder of why personality and emotion always trumps outright technical proficiency (though that’s not to say he was lacking in that department in any way). Song-wise, I didn’t realize how loaded this album is - it seems that just about every other song here ended up being a hit, and yet even the ones in between that I had never heard of are just as good, if not better. Like, I’ve always found Fire and Foxey Lady to be a bit overrated, but holy cow, stuff like Love or Confusion, Third Stone from the Sun, and May This Be Love almost immediately entered the upper echelons of the Hendrix catalog for me. Of course, it’s hard to beat Purple Haze and Hey Joe, songs that go hand-in-hand with the Hendrix name, and for good reason (shoutout to Hey Joe for being one of the first songs my guitar teacher tried teaching me in like the fifth grade). The absolute best song on both this album and likely of Hendrix’s career has got to be The Wind Cries Mary for me though (Castles Made of Sand comes close). It's an absolutely beautiful track that hits me in a way that I think few others have. Finally, I have to give credit to the title track for being a fantastic closer (if you don’t count the bonus tracks), though that does bring me to my only real critique with the album - aside from Are You Experienced, it doesn’t really feel like a ton of thought was put into the overall organization or flow of tracks here. It’s not really a huge issue, especially with how distractingly fantastic each individual song is, but it does come off just a touch disjointed at times. I really didn’t think I’d end up scoring this highly going in, but man, what an album, especially for a debut. You can just tell that the game was changed completely when it dropped, and so many contemporary rock acts and ones to follow were playing catch up. While I can’t quite pull the trigger on the 5 - still wouldn’t say that I love every song here - what an album to rock out to, one that I willingly listened to multiple times and that sent me on a bit of a Hendrix kick. Hoping we see more of his work pop up here. Closing thoughts, is this not one of the best album covers of all-time? Jimmy looks like an absolute badass on it, and the style somehow perfectly captures what the album sounds and feels like. Iconic image in music, though if I’m being honest, it’s one I’ll always associate with the comic strip Get Fuzzy (iykyk).
Ha estado guay. Sobre todo, me ha gustado la canción de Foxey Lady, aunque me ha gustado en general.
Pretty good. I was bust too young to appreciate him.
Some amazing guitar classics. A few too many mediocre unremarkable tracks to give it a 5
Fistfighting barbiturates for what they did to him
Good album. I find myself wanting to like it more than I do. And see how how revolutionary it was, though.
Great Hendrix album. Pretty recognizable sound, exactly what you’d expect. ‘Purple Haze’ is probably the most popular song on the album, I think my favorite is ‘Hey Joe’ since that’s my name (also a pretty big hit).
