Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Listening to the International version (and the Bonus Tracks 'cause Purple Haze and Stone Free are perfect songs). Foxey Lady - Am I experienced to this genre? Nope, but I'm liking it. Manic Depression - I love the drums in this song. Red House - Bluessy (if that word exist), pretty chill. Can You See Me - More rocky, second favorite 'till now. Love Or Confusion - Amazing song, not my style, but it's pretty good. I Don't Live Today - I can surely see why Jimi Hendrix is considered the best guitarrist of all time, but I don't know, at least this side wasn't what I expected. Ok, the second half of the song is amazing. May This Be Love - More of my style, this one is lovely. Fire - LET ME STAND NEXT TO YOUR FIRE, FINALLY. Third Stone From The Sun - The riff is awe-inspiring (using english vocab for practice). Remember - I don't remember what was my breakfast, but I will remember this song for sure. Are You Experienced? - The guitar is really outta this world. Hey Joe - Oh man, I love a good lick, A GUITAR LICK, NO PHYSICAL LICKS. Stone Free - THE GOAT HAS ARRIVED. Purple Haze - ANOTHER GOAT. 51st Anniversary - 3RD GOAT IN A ROW, I didn't know that this one existed. The Wind Cries Mary - 4TH GOAT IN A ROW, I like the extras much more than the album itself. Highway Chile - Not a goat but almost one. I retract my words, this song, is truly a goat. Side 2 and Extras were better in my opinion, strong album, just no my style Top 5 Stone Free Fire Purple Haze 51st Anniversary Foxey Lady
It's wild to realize that this is my least favorite Jimi album, and yet, it's pretty fantastic.
Kinda feel bad not giving this a 5 with tracks like Red House and Fox(e)y Lady but my listening experience got so confused by the different editions I'm not really sure what album I'd be giving a 5 to.
Thought I'd recognize more of the songs! Great guitar playing
This a fantastic album, early subtle psychedelia mixed with some hard rock. Maybe a couple of songs vanish in the ether but there are some very memorable tracks too.
Never the biggest Hendrix fan. But, listening to the whole album through may have changed my mind. "Hey Joe" is classic. Never heard "May This Be Love" but really good. This album surprised me. I thought I was familiar with Hendrix, but I was not. He was very talented and gone too soon.
i can't give it a 4.5 out of 5, so a 4, pretty damn good
Deffo chocked full of bangers. Jimi is pretty wild on this one, lyrics are kinda alright but like the guitar stuff is mental. Robby picks - Fire - used to practice the drums to this track Manic Depression - always loved this tune for the riff, the drums have adhd in this one Tempted to give it a 4 cos it is quite long, the production gets a bit extra in places and the mix isn’t great. But it’s triply af and that’s probably how jimi wanted it Fk it it’s a 4 from me
Spotify uses the original US edition track order, per wikipedia
Excellent album.
Klassísk rokklög. Gott en hlusta aldrei aftur.
Oh, Jimi.... how much more would music have changed if he'd stayed around? A visionary pioneer, for sure, and still an amazing listen. Thanks for bringing so much fun into our music, Jimi!
A classic, love me some Hendrix. Album does run a tad long but makes up for it by being good
A great album with a few known songs, went with the original release so no purple haze or Hey joe so with them I there would rete it even higher.
Feels sacrilegious to say but I could have done with fewer guitar solos
liked it a lot, foxy lady is my fave :)
He created a unique and to this day easily identifiable sound. There was no one like Hendrix.
Amazing. Never listened to this album in full before. Perfect timing too, just watched the concert film Monterey Pop for the first time, entranced with Jimi lighting his guitar on fire.
Jimi Hendrix has an immediately recognisable sound, and it's very good. Stand-out: Hey Joe
Great album, had already heard this one.
Liked it better than I'd expected! Some relistens in there for sure. A bit more funk than I typically like, but some really great melodies.
classics.... 4 stars
Fantastic debut album, highlighting not only Hendrix's innovation and virtuosity but also what a tight, dynamic and accessible group the Experience were. Quite an eclectic collection of rock, pop, ballads, blues and psychedelia all featuring blistering guitar work underpinned by a swinging rhythm section.
Geile Gitarre, geile Stimme, geile Lyrics. Vorher noch nie so richtig Hendrix gehört, hat sich gelohnt. Favoriten: Foxey Lady, May This Be Love, Third Stone From The Sun. 4,5. Ganz nah dran gewesen 5 zu geben.
I was excited to listen to this album once I got it and it definitely didn’t disappoint but honestly my expectations were so high I probably couldn’t help feeling slightly let down. It’s an incredible feat of guitar work and the pinnacle of psychedelic blues rock in the 60s but it still couldn’t keep me fully engaged for the entire hour. Obviously purple haze and foxey lady and the title track are all great plus the last handful of songs are super fun too and I liked it more than electric lady land but for some reason I can’t give it a 5.
Recognized a couple of the songs. Not a huge fan of the "tinny" sound. Very talented musician, however.
Probably the weakest of the Hendrix releases. But this is far from weak. There are a few editions. The original didn't have Hey Joe and purple haze but does have red house and is moderatly better. On listening the production seems a little flat compared to how I remember. Still the songs are good and Hendrix is a unique guitarist enjoyed it.
Nearly every single great jimi song is on this record Very very good Hey Joe, wind cries Mary classics Standard 4
Favorite Tracks: Purple Haze Hey Joe Foxey Lady
I can say that this is one of the greatest debut albums, every instrument has an unique rhytm and sound; the guitar is really psychodelic, the vocals and drums are hypnotizing. I'm not a big fan of Jimmy Hendrix, but i can tell, as a fan of rock music, that this is a very unique album that came to change the way music was made and the sound of rock n' roll music.
I recognize the album's greatness but it doesn't click with my tastes.
I mean, it’s Jimi Hendrix and everyone has tried to emulate him since. That said I didn’t love the album and some tracks are stronger than others. Pretty amazing album though. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Purple Haze Rating: 4
I can see why this album and Jimi was so popular. It's a refreshing change to the simplistic music of the Beatles.
Incredible album incredible guitar work
Great experience! 4.1
8.5/10
I’ve never really been a huge Hendrix guy and expected to give it a respectful 3 stars but the further I got into the album the more I appreciated it. Kind of sounds like it was recorded on a tape recorder in Jimi’s apartment though, surprised there isn’t a remastered version where we could hear the guitars a little clearer.
4.4 What a trip
not my personal favorite but undeniably an amazing album
There are some incredible highlights on this record. Hendrix must have been like an alien landing on planet earth for those around at the time.
Jimi Hendrix's strongest work and a fantastic combination of classic blues styles combined with new forms of guitar and sound manipulation.
This rocks.
Classic.
I really quite enjoyed this.
Unbelievable music from a 3 piece.
Yep
Another great album
PERO SIIIIII 8/10
Liked this
Lots of great, classic songs! Plus some songs that prove he was ahead of his time (may this be love)!
Legendary.
Exciting and energy lifting.
Very good album with a couple of classics
Great stuff
Jimi is such a king. Every time I listen to him I know exactly what to expect and that's face melting and great singing. I have loved listening to the couple albums that have come up. For me though the whole albums are so much better than the individual songs themselves when they come up randomly. Still this album fux in classic Jimi fashion
Legendary riffs naturally, but a rhythm section that really grooves behind Hendrix wibbling.
Great Album, more classics than I realised. Still should dig for more gold when have more time in this one.
Psychedelic blues, what’s not to love?
A classic.
Svinbra!
hendrix is ok i guess... he's only one of the 2-3 most creative people ever to play. I'll deduct a star because i believe "the wind cries mary" should've been on album 3 times instead of 1. it's a no brainer.
ah, tosi hyvä. ei ne valehtele kun puhuu siitä kitarasta.
Hendrix is a fantastic guitarist of course. Thought the album was okay, but Jimi’s playing skills gave it an extra star
Vibe
awesome album!!!!
Classic rock deluxe. So blues inspired, I haven't heard much by Hendrix but that was definitely an interesting experience.
Purple Haze // Hey Joe // Fire // Foxey Lady //
A great Hendrix album, loved the guitar work
Jimi stendur alltaf fyrir sínu. Alls ekki allra, en ég fíla þetta.
psychedelic vibe on its own
A classic, but not 100% bangers
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Purple Haze (1) 2 - The Wind Cries Mary (7) 3 - Manic Depression (2)
Undeniably good, obviously
Cool.
A couple of ultimate classics; as a whole I cannot appreciate it enough to give full marks though.
typical jimi hendrix banger, i like electric ladyland more but this is a great album
4 star
Honestly, I thought Hendrix was a one-man act and didn't have any other band members. Turns out that was a no. This is a pretty good album. Perhaps a bit too long for my tastes but still pretty good. Turns out he does kind of lives up to the hype. This is a low 4/5
psychedelic tinged guitar rock with a couple of ballads thrown in. easy to see why this one is on the list. solid. highlights: “manic depression”, “hey joe”, “fire”, “are you experienced?”
Great album
I get this one.
My youth calling…. Not yet perfect but what a debut!
Une grande inspiration pour tous les joueurs de ukulele 🙏
felicitations
All the hits, but not as good as a record as "Axis: Bold as Love" in my opinion. It could be because most of these songs feel overplayed and in the classic rock pantheon, and in Axis, the songs are fresher - but still it feel it's a tad too long, and some songs are extra. Then again, Purple Haze, Fire, Hey Joe, Foxy Lady, 3rd Stone from the Sun... all bangers, even though they Are overplayed. Looking at the original UK edition though, I'm curious to hear that version - might, just might, make a better record. Or not. I'll see.
Surprised me how good this was musically. Everyone knows about Jimi and his guitar but this whole band is pretty good
Very atmospheric guitars
Fantastic album, some filler but a lot of killers make up for it! Mitch Mitchell is as much a legend Hendrix is
4.5/5. Unbelievable. Best when combining both US and international releases. This is practically a greatest hits album by itself! Standouts: Purple Haze, Foxy Lady, Wind Cries Mary, Hey Joe, Fire, Are You Experienced?, Stone Free, Manic Depression, Highway Chile.
Not good enough at guitars to understand what Hendrix is doing but I liked to listen to it
Purple Haze & The Wind Cries Mary! Awesome!
The word classic gets bandied about a lot. And this is absolutely classic and seminal and influential and all those words. It also has personal resonance in that it was used in a play I did. But much as they are great tunes - Hey Joe is a belter (although I’m not sure if I prefer the Patti Smith version) - there is something that doesn’t quite emotionally connect with me. I appreciate the virtuoso performance and the talent and sometimes wonder if that talent would have prevailed if he’d lived longer but I am not that bothered if I don’t hear it again for a long while.
Jimi Hendrix seems like an alien or time traveler — something not quite of this world. Try as I might, I can't fully comprehend what his presence on the scene was like for those who were there to witness it, I only know the stories of all the biggest names in music clamoring to get to his shows to try to figure out what this guy was doing. So, I recognize his genius, but that never translated into me loving his music. I mean, I know just about every tune because we all do. But I never have listened to a Hendrix album front to back. This is a remarkable debut album. It's a cliche, and you'll see all sorts of people raving that this album or the other is the greatest debut in history, but this one truly deserves to be on the short list of "debut albums you have to hear before you die." The songs are solid, and Hendrix seems to float around and do what he does with such ease, it's fantastic. And damn, Mitch Michell and Noel Redding are incredible and dazzling in their own right. So how is this a 4 after all that? I don't know. I think this is great, but there's something that holds me back. I never loved Jimi's vocals — as signature as they are, he's never going to go down as one of the great singers in history. But there's something else that I can't quite articulate. Some culmination of the sound ... I can hear it's special, but I've never fallen in love.
I listened to a lot of classic rock when I was in high school and college, but I never listened any Jimi Hendrix albums. I'm familiar with a few of his songs, but I wasn't sure what to expect from one of his full albums. I thought that Are You Experienced was great, and in addition to showing off Hendrix's guitar playing skills, it showed off his abilities as a songwriter too. Whether it was a faster tempo song like "Fire" or "Foxy Lady," or a slower tempo song like "Hey Joe" or "Third Stone From The Sun," Hendrix plays great guitar riffs for a whole spectrum of sound. This was a great listen from start to finish, and Hendrix is easily one of the most influential guitar players to ever pick up the instrument.
Classic Hendrix experience
Classic
Solid. Real appreciation for Jimi's genius Purple haze is my fav
Took me a bit to get into it but another great listen. Fav track: are you experienced 3.5
Quite enjoyed yesterdays, and thought this was even better. Great flow between tracks, some all time classics, and second to none playing. The more mellow and laid back tracks stuck with me more - a great listen to wake up to. A strong four. Fave track: Hey Joe
Classic. Always good to drop this one in your ears yearly
I am now
great stuff, many classics, diamond
This is a sunny summer day album, best listened to while stoned.
good songs, knew several already from rock band. favorites: purple haze, highway chile
Great album, classic
Jimi Hendrix debut album must have sent a shockwave through the music industry in 1967. It retains its power to this day. Instantly recognisable and effortlessly cool. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Purple Haze Date listened: 05/05/2
POP was a Hendrix fan. I first EXPERIENCED Jimi's record, the original US release, on vinyl and loud as that Hi-Fi could go. In his younger years, POP liked to play records so loud that the house was a speaker for listening in the backyard. It's hard to imagine how many minds were blown, just like speakers, from the opening RIFF alone. It's crazy to me that a record from 1967 still sounds generally excellent in 2023. Some of the inventiveness is now standard blues rock, of course. All the standout tracks still SHINE, but the thing that I appreciate on listening to the record today are the tracks that aren't the popular hits with the big streaming numbers; songs like "I Don't Live Today" and "Love or Confusion". They're definitely a bit more psychedelic and less radio friendly, but the quality is super HIGH.
So many great songs – classics, one almost forgets how great "Fire" and "Manic Depression" were/are – but it's "Third Stone from the Sun" that makes the record first-rate, and an all-time debut. One slightly prefers the rough-edged and looser Axis Bold as Love.
Enjoyed the vast majority of the songs. Took a bit to get into but Jimi’s personality and some interesting production is what sold it for me.
First of all- who puts 17 songs in one album? That's TOO MANY Actually tho I did like this album, it seemed like the music you'd hear playing live from a gazebo in the middle of a farmers market on a summer afternoon. My favorite songs were Hey Joe and The Wind Cries Mary. I didn't really catch the lyrics for most of the songs in this album but these two stood out to me. I would say tho that the instrumental parts went on too long, and I wish there was more singing. But very good vibes, added a lot to my Farmers Market playlist. :)
I can appreciate it as a seminal piece of art, hugely influential, incredibly talented, but honestly I didn't love it. I can only take so much psychedelic before it turns into a bad trip and make me ill. I liked a lot of the songs, but I wouldn't necessarily revisit the whole album. 12/04/23
Solid. I'll come back to this before Electric Ladyland for sure.
AWWWW YEEEEEEAHHHHH!!! That is all.
There's never been another guitarist like Jimi and there never will be again. His guitar playing feels like something miraculous, I don't know how else to describe it. The debut album is amazing, but I think the other two original studio albums are actually better. 4 stars.
I'm very familiar with Jimi, but mostly the greatest hits. I remember trying to get into his individual albums years ago but it never gripping me so I never ventured back. The same is true today. There are some amazing, unbelievable tracks on there, but still the ones that I've been listening to for years. The rest are pretty good. What amazes me though as I didn't realise how early this was. 1967! For some reason I always put him in the early 70s. The fact this was out before the White Album, before any Zeppelin, blows my mind. Surely one of the best debuts of all time, to help pioneer a genre and cement yourself as one of the greatest guitarists immediately. A mixture of 3*, 4* and 5* tracks means I have to give this 4* overall.
Genres: Psychedelic rock, hard rock, acid rock, blues Formed: London in 1966 Run time: 17 songs, 60 min I really love 10 of the 17 songs on this album. The other tracks are OK. “Purple Haze” which is probably the best-known track has almost 300M plays on Spotify. Even the less popular tracks have around 5M plays. It’s hard to image that this is the debut album. His lyrics are amazing, and his guitar work must have seemed like wizardry at the time (and still does). I will continue to listen to this and other Hendrix albums. My Rating: *****
I have kind of a weird relationship with this album, since I've owned it on vinyl for more than 15 years, but I can't remember the last time I bothered to listen to it. I just never feel like I'm in the mood for Jimi Hendrix. And yet, right from the first song, I remember why I bought this album. I just feels like Jimi has a different dimension to his guitar playing. It feels chaotic yet effortlessly controlled at the same time. This album runs deep with great songs too, with all but a couple of his biggest hits being represented here. Definitely a nice album to revisit once in a while 4/5
4.5
Jimmy sure knew how to play the guitar. I think I enjoyed this more than Electric Ladyland, but the tracks still start to blend together rather quickly. 'Manic Depression' was one of the first songs I learned on the electric guitar because my teacher apparently was a sadist. Great track though, and the following bluesy 'Red House' is another highlight. Top three tracks were 'Hey Joe', 'Purple Haze' and 'The Wind Cries Mary'. Too bad none of them were on the original album.
This is a review of the original UK release of Hendrix’ legendary debut album. Jimi plays a mean guitar as always and Mitch Mitchell plays an even meaner set of drums. One of the greatest drum performances of the 60’s. I understand “Can You See Me”. But as to why they decided to include the twelve-bar blues “Red House” and the plain boring “Remember” over the singles “Hey Joe”, “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary” will never cease to amaze me. I’ll give the US version a 5/5 rating. This is slightly worse.
Never been into Hendrix. This playthrough did remind me that he was a shredder but I'm not much for blues rock and the drums always bothered me...
Niezła psychodela.
No I am not experienced
Still a fantastic album, the basis for most rock today. Hendrix’s riffs defined electric guitar and still continue to this day.
Classic Album. Classic tones.
Landmark debut from JH with a confidence and style. Guitae playing from another planet. Hey Joe Purple Haze, Wind Cried Mary. Still sounds fresh.
Little too much filler.
Stonewall classic
Damn, da va bedre enn eg huska
Still one of the best Blues and psychedelic rock records
Op dit album staan toch wel erg veel van Jimi's beste nummers. Ik vind dit echt erg tof.
A classic album ! 4*
4/5 Even though I only knew the first song, I really did enjoy the music. It was catchy and groovy and in tune. I was surprised that so many of the songs were about "love," but it had the drugs and the rock and roll so of course it would have the sex. It was a good album that I can see myself listening to again! FINALLY....
It's been a while but finally something I enjoyed and found high quality. Wasn't sure what to expect from this but wasn't disappointed. Will listen again.
Amazing album
Psych classic. I have nothing more to add other than the fact that I, controversially, prefer their sophmore release
Bra
The man was a guitar god enough said!
This has a large chunk of Jimi's best tracks on it. Pretty special record. I just wish the master recordings were better quality, I reckon we miss a lot of the finer detail around the Hendrix revolutionary guitar style due to ham fisted recording.
Wednesday, 29th October 2025. Only 1000 more to go. Not a bad start at all. 6/10
4.75
Rawk.
Rock. Blues.
Legendary! Jimi has some of my favorite riffs of all time and at least two of them are on this album. His blues infused melodies are just as interesting as his guitar work.
I mean, a great album, red house and purple haze? Also May this be love was a great track, never heard it before
Great songs. Love that guy
I've heard the hits but never this full album. Great album!
my favorite stunt guitarist
goes without saying that this is one of the most influential albums of all time. It's best experienced with headphones, fully immersing yourself in the smooth sounds of jimi's guitar.
Liked this more than I thought
for me top three albums from Jimi are axis bold as love live at Monterey and the two discs BBC sessions not particularly in that order but are you experienced was a powerhouse debut album the lakes of anything nobody has heard before the band was really tight drumming spot on I was barely alive at that time and only got into the music late 70s early '80s and it was amazing The sounds he got out of that instrument the rest of the band was spot on also but to me now the album doesn't excite me anymore just because I've heard it hundreds if not hundreds of times but to put it on every month or two brings back good memories
Many good songs, classic album
Guitar go brrrrrrr
One of the finest guitarists to form rock music for the coming decades! Legendary Jimi Hebdrix, and what an amazing band he had! Front to back great songs, but also some great deeper cuts when you look past the big songs. Key tracks for me are: Foxey Lady, Manic Depression, Can You See Me, Love Or Confusion, May This Be Love, Fire, Third Stone From The Sun, Are You Experienced?, Hey Joe, Stone Free, Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary. Basically the whole record 😄 9 out of 10
En jävla debut!
Coworker and I were having a discussion on guitarists (as we semi-frequently do) and we had a few people whose riffs can be played by someone else, but won't have the same intensity and passion behind them. Hendrix was the first name that came up that inspired the discussion. I don't know how you can listen to any of this and not hear there being a genius at work behind the guitar. Incredible performance. Favorite tracks: "Fire", "Manic Depression", "Are You Experienced?"
Some great tracks on here. Not enough to bring it to a 5
HARİKA HARİKA HARİKA JİMİ HENDRİX MÜKEMMEL FOXEY LADY ÇOK SEKSİ Bİ ŞARKI
Excellent guitar album, Hendrix is pretty much unmatched! It's a record that's so good it's actually boring lol Like every track is like "oh boy, ANOTHER absolute banger." That said, my favorite is Third Stone From the Sun, which is kind of an implosion of what the rest of the record sounds like.
i AM experienced!
Amazing guitar and blues influences
Hendrix was a game changer, a pioneer, a true legend. However, nigh on 50 years later we’ve heard Hendrix and those that were inspired by him to push the boundaries further than Hendrix would ever have imagined possible. Hendrix would look at Tom Morillo as an alien from another planet much the way Hendrix was viewed in his day. This takes nothing from Hendrix but changes the way we hear him today. There are great songs on the album, but because we aren’t blown away by his pioneering sound any more, the album relies more heavily in the strength of the songs rather than the uniqueness of his style and mastery. The truth is these songs aren’t that strong and begin to sound pretty same same with the exception of a notable few.
A really fun listen. There isn’t much of a concept behind the album but 90% of the songs are classics.
Classic listening experience.
I really enjoyed it especially the more experimental moments. I don’t need to listen again
Jimi's debut and a great hard/psyc rock album
Enjoyable guitar licks.
Listened to on 10/3/22 4/5 Favorite song: purple haze The guitar riffs and psychedelic rock were *chefs kiss*
It almost feels sacrilegious to not rate this 5 stars, yet... it just didn't feel as solid as other albums I love. The music is great and the guitar work is good, but it just lacks something. Compared with the other Hendrix album this just didn't speak to me. It's still good but I don't expect to be returning to it any time soon.
4.5/5
Jimi is another one of those artist that you always hear about, but never really listen to (Jimi, NOT Jimmy - I LISTEN to him all the time). It doesn't pull any punches right from the beginning. Is there any song that represents the late 60s more than Purple Haze? This dude could rock! A couple of other standouts were that Garth favorite, Foxey Lady (Garth Algar, NOT Garth Brooks) - I couldn't help doing the dance myself - and Third Stone from the Sun, which has a catchy little hook that I know has been sampled about a million times (OK, according to Google, seven - but I've heard the Dooby Bros so often that it seems like a million - https://www.whosampled.com/Jimi-Hendrix/Third-Stone-From-the-Sun/sampled/?ob=1 ). Overall a nice trippy rockin' trip to the 60s.
J'aime à quel point c'est particulier, unique, bien qu'imité souvent.
Un clásico, aunque a veces puede ser demasiado para mí
Ok this is definitely an experience Can You Third Rock
repetitve bur coll
An actual "rock classic" album that doesn't suck. I listened to the 17-track version which is better in my opinion, as it flows much better and has some iconic songs.
Skills
Undeniable talent, each of these songs is great, though the entire album did start to wear on me after a while. Still though, you make Purple Haze, you can do whatever you want.
Crazy to be writing this but I don't think I've ever listened to a Jimi Hendrix record front to back. You hear his songs all the time but looking forward to sitting down with more time to listen. Purple Haze is clearly recognizable immediately and if the rest of the album can match it, I'll be pleasantly surprised. Hey Joe was one I saved, then learned it's already a super popular song to cover.
Best Song: The Wind Cries Mary. The album is full of examples of Hendrix setting fire to tracks, burning it all down as he plays these iconic guitar solos that everyone's become familiar with now. What I like about this song is how gentle he sounds, both in voice and guitar. Worst Song: Red House. Sounds a bit too much like a standard blues track. Overall: Feels like the best that classic rock has to offer. Mildly psychedelic, marked by Jimi's excellent voice and 9bviously virtuosic guitar playing. Maybe too long, it's got a bit too much fat on it to warrant a 5 from me, but still phenomenal, obviously.
Napohodu
Another artist I mainly know from the ‘greatest hits’. And so many of those are crammed in here. And with the different production styles this doesn’t feel like an album, but more of a compilation . However, is was revelation. Some great tunes here that were new to me, and even for a guitar-solo-sceptic such as myself, there is more than enough invention to make this irrelevant. I have probably heard Third Stone before, but it was good to hear it in amongst the rest and sounded fresh to these ears as a consequence.
I went through a Hendrix phase back in 1989 during my final teenage years. I rinsed his three albums so much that I haven't really touched them since. Over 30 years later seems like a good time to revisit them. There are some tracks on Are You Experienced that I don't remember - which is a little odd. I've moved away considerably from my earlier rock outlook. But I'm still something of a sucker for a powerhouse trio. Even if you listen to this album away from what must have been a revolutionary new sounds when it was first released, this is still a very, very powerful album.
It’s the best Jimi ever was. Killer tunes, wailing guitar, rock the fuck out. I dig.
Lots of sounds that you hear in later rock, way ahead of its time
Classic album, great for when you're feeling in the mood for Hendrix
Unbelievable guitar work. Favourite track: The Wind Cries Mary
May This Be Love is just one of the best songs ever.
Very Raspberry Beret and like Kansas vibes, definitely dad rock. But I can see the influence for that time period. R.I.P King
Very big 60s psychedelia/hippie rock phase in my young adulthood. I’ve probably listened to this a hundred times, but not recently. Of course it still holds up, mind blowing sound for a trio. Very near top performance right out the gate.
A lot of decent to very good songs on here. I’ll need to come back to get deeper into them, but on first listen it sounded like a lot of quality. 7/10
So the US version is very good, but it omitts Can You See Me, which I love, the brit version omitts Purple Haze and Hey Joe, so I'm gonna judge every song. I mean, It's Hendrix. Hendrix is literally the most important guitarist of all time. Though I don't know if I can give this album a 5/5, because I know where Hendrix will go from it. It's a 4/5 got sure, but man, he WILL do better from this. And my favorite Hendrix songs are almost exclusively from the next two albums. It's a damn fine album. But I have to give it a 4/5 I'm afraid. This for me lacks the magic of Axis and Electric Ladyland. Those have Little Wing, If 6 was 9, Voodoo Child and All Along The Watchtower, and those hit HARD. This one has Purple Haze and Foxy Lady, but else, idk. Really feels bad to do this, but yeah: 4/5
Bra start på Tysklandresa!
Iconic album but I I can't listen to blues for long ;)
Extraordinary album with a powerful influence in the rock music of upcoming decades.
Classic Hendrix. As a guitarist this stuff is incredible even to today's standards. Some of the tunes can be a little samey but it's overall a great experience
Already one of my favorite Hendrix records. Classic!
awesome guitar player
The hill I am prepared to die on: Mitch Mitchell is the star of this album
+Love or Confusion I used to listen to this album a lot as a kid, totally forgot about Love or Confusion, which I loved in addition to all the radio hits. Anyways, this is classic Jimi, and amazing all the way.
It’s Jimi, great but played out.
Going 4.5, don't think there will ever be a time this doesn't sound cool
Genre: Blues Rock 4/5 One of rock and roll's all-time best debut albums, yet serves only as a brief glimpse of what was to come, and unfortunately would end too soon, Are You Experienced (UK or US tracklist) is one of blues rock's best albums ever. Jimi Hendrix, who needs no introduction, is probably rock and roll's greatest guitarist. His precision strikes mixed with his true blues groove, and an unrepentant desire for experimentation, Hendrix paved the way for every guitar god who dared follow him, while maintaining a certain degree of prowess that has yet to be met. While they're may be more technically talented shredders out there nowadays, none come close to playing with the style and grace of the late, great Jimi Hendrix. As far as the album is concerned, songs like the relentless Manic Depression, the all-time greatest cover of Hey Joe ever, the blues knockout Red House, to one of rock's quintessential blues jams Foxy Lady, this album is chock full of some of the best rock songs from the 1960s. Flawlessly executed, and mixed and produced with a raw, live sound, featuring tremendous instrumental contributions from their bassist, Noel Redding, and from one of the best rock drummers ever, Mitch Mitchell, Are You Experienced is an absolute jam fest. A great album anyway you slice it, with energy pulsing through each track, even the slower-paced ones. Jimi was the best, and he'd only get better from here. A classic.
4.5 Classic 7 Classics! Foxy Lady, Fire, Hey Joe, Are You Experienced?, Manic Depression, Purple Haze and the Wind Cries Mary. The rest of the songs are just damn good - including May This Be Love, I Didn't Live Today, Third Stone From the Sun, Stone Free and Love or Confusion,
Another amazing debut album. Never really thought about it much before but as distinctive as Jimi's voice was, it wasn't really that great. He was a guitarist, first and foremost. But he made it work and really crushed this album.
4.25
Hard to find fault with such a classic... And yet I will. Minus 1 star for stupid fucking stereo.
Not a Hendrix head but I can appreciate the impact he had on music and I especially enjoy his guitar shreds in here
8/10 Best Song - Fire
I never really think of this as much of an album, just a load of songs with Jimi Hendrix playing guitar on, but there's so much good stuff. The drummer is amazing, and no one has ever made a guitar sound like Hendrix
Relaxed psychadellic rock
I hate single-side panned vocals. I'd rather have mono for Purple Haze than this overly stereo version. Other tracks are better. But ya, this is good Jimi Hendrix, what else is there to say?
Already listened
Beautiful, as always, this never gets old
Classic
confusing as shit this, should i have listened to the UK release or should i have listened to the US release? the hendrix estate are also shit hot at getting things taken off yootoob, which is my preferred listening platform so that was muddled as fook with all sorts of random live versions. most confusing of all is why the american version felt it necessary to put an E in the word Foxy (foxey). the 60s were wild. anyway music, i had in my head that this was a rubbish album from some sort of previous listen years ago. i was wrong, this is very good. Maybe i was listening to the wrong release and one is better than the other. I'm no longer in my stoner rock days, as i aint got time for that shit, but i am now in my i wish i was better at guitar days so hendrix genuinely does melt my mind.
This is the debut album from Jimi Hendrix and his bandmates. It was immediately successful, and is regarded as the greatest album debut in rock music history. Hendrix established a new method of rock and psychedelic music with his genius songwriting and talented guitar playing. Psychedelic rock was at its height when Jimi Hendrix was creating music like this. He was taken from this life far too soon, but his amazing work lives on with albums like this one. Everyone under the sun needs to listen to this album at least once. But just once won't be enough.
Great classic rock album. Peppered with absolute iconic songs that defined that era of rock. I also enjoyed a few of the lesser known songs, as they felt a bit more like a jam session than a fully produced song.
Yeah this rules obviously. The guitar playing is dirty and the production is still very interesting with great use of stereo space especially on the wonderfully psychedelic Third Stone From The Sun. Not much else to say, a classic for a reason.
One of the most iconic rock albums of all time, the medium of electric guitar is probably nowhere near the same if this album is not made. The popular songs, Purple Haze, Fire, Hey Joe, Foxy Lady etc. are all great, plus songs like Manic Depression or I Don't Live Today are great deeper cuts.
Obviously there is truly some remarkable guitar work to be found here. That's Jimi's strength and it is mighty. That's not quite enough to get this album a 5 star from me though. Jimi isn't a bad singer, but he's nothing special. He certainly doesn't hurt anything with his vocals but nothing is really elevated either. There's also a few songs that aren't really that good. Third Stone From Earth grated on my nerves. This would be a 5 star album for influence and guitar work. Unfortunately factoring in some grievances and nitpicks I have to max it out at 4. I'm sure this has enough 5's that no one will be too upset.
I haven't listened to this in a long time. Jimi became a t-shirt in the 90s, along with Morrison and some other folks, and it sort of felt cliche to be into Jimi Hendrix. But jesus, listening to this - his playing can't be overhyped. And add to that his vocal performance which just makes you believe everything that comes out of his mouth. Song for song this is one of the best albums ever made. It's practically a greatest hits collection. Except for that last song. Woof.
This, to the younger version of me, was the entrepot to a world of music I couldn't even conceive of existing. Simply, I'd never heard guitar like this. 'Foxy Lady' has probably enjoyed the longest afterlife - and it is a priapic blooter of gigantic proportions - but as I've got older, it's the more subtle tracks that have revealed their charms to me. That outro solo to 'May This Be Love' is one of the most lyrical guitar parts I've ever heard. Magic stuff.
First, if you took guitar lessons as a young teen and didn't learn "Take Five" by The Dave Brubeck Quartet did you even take lessons at all?? I can still whittle my way around that melody on the ol' jingle axe. Great stuff. And connected to the Hendrix record via the exact same guitar teacher! My favorite song of the bunch is "May This Be Love." That was on the soundtrack for the movie Singles, no? Regardless, I remember hearing it in the mid-90s as I was getting into things like Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins and realizing that Hendrix had more in common with alternative music than with the Doobie Bros. This shit is timeless in an earned way. I can still listen to "Hey Joe" and actively enjoy it. Which is nuts. Also, I mean damn... that rhythm section could straight kill an entire marching band.
quick, snappy, fun. Hey Joe is a fucking anthem and this is the (2nd) best version. Jimi's got a great set of pipes on him aside from his obvious talent on the guitar.
Typische Henrix sound: virtuoos, maar blaast me niet altijd omver
Hell yeah
so fucking fresh. only ever listened to the hits. wow!
A classic
Full on psychedelia, man.
4/5 Great album, I don’t see a need to talk about how much Joni Hendrix influenced music as many others that know more than me have better than I can. While I don’t listen to them regularly I do enjoy the hits from this album and I liked the songs that I’ve never heard before. Fav Songs: Purple Rain, Fire, Foxey Lady
Not sure where to start. Jimi is one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar. Shear guitar greatness. Sad for such a short life. This was his debut album. Crazy right. There are 4+ songs that are all time greats. This group defined what a power trio was in the late 60's. I love his voice on Wind cries Mary. A ballad mixed in with great guitar solos. I'm a guitar fan so I love this album. Only complaint is some of his solo's are so crazy it becomes noise in parts. Overall great music. I have not listened in years. I will play more often for sure. Gotta love ..move over....let Jimi take over.
I know everyone knows this but the guitar playing is awesome and clearly drives all the songs. Thing it's interesting how he has vocal outputs to one side or the other for each song
I've always thought of this as 'the singles' but overall the third best Jimi Hendrix Experience album. (The JHE is always the argument I use for why Crowded House aren't an Australian band. Although I'm more than happy for JHE to be considered a British band, given 2/3 of the band were English, they made their name in the UK and the first two albums were recorded in London, even if 'the talent' was American).
Close listening is worth it. Mind you, so is being off your face on acid.
I haven’t listened to this in full for a while. It’s genius at work already despite being a debut. Electric Lady land is more a complex record, this one more commercial. The Wind Cries Mary is a work of art.
Great album, falls just short of a masterpiece to me. Amazing the sounds that Hendrix could get out of his guitar.
I reviewed the North American edition of Are You Experienced, because this is the version of the album that I have listened to before. I easily recognized and remembered 8 of the 11 tracks from the titles alone. I may have had a copy of this album on cassette, but I can't remember for sure. Maybe my brother had a copy. This was a difficult album to try and find studio versions of each track for review. The tracks that I enjoyed the most were lesser known tracks - probably because I haven't heard them so often, but also because they are good tracks: "3rd Stone from the Sun" and "Love or Confusion". "Are You Experienced?" and "The Wind Cries Mary" are favorites too, but probably got lower scores from me because I've heard them so many times. This is a debut album that is worth listening to. It would be an easy choice to play the album again.
Loved what he did for music and guitar playing, but not a great songwriter. Still a strong album.
One of those albums I'm amazed was from the 60s, still sounds quite futuristic in many ways. No doubting Jimi's genius and influence and this is probably his best album overall
A smorgasbord of mega choons: Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, and (my personal favourite) Hey Joe. Some definite filler, especially if you include the bonus tracks, but there are extra points for this album's undoubted influence on the history of guitar music. 4/4.5 - that sort of thing.
4.5
It was good and I recognized more songs than I thought I would
Ha il sapore del classico. Da riascoltare.
8/10
Hendrix is a legend, and hard to offer any original commentary on. I haven't ever owned his albums, and I don't really put Hendrix on and let it roll as much as pick out iconic songs and performances.
Solid album by a legend. Lots of songs, most are good.
8. Not very much my style but can't say it's not excellent
8/10. Definitely feels aged, but still pretty fun. A little lengthy.
I can't really say anything new about Hendrix's guitar playing and how important and influential it was. This album is an inarguable inclusion in this book. That said, it's clearly a 60s album from the aggressive abuse of stereo panning throughout.
Debut album of the Jimmy Hendrix Experience band (1967). Are You Experienced is widely regarded as one of the greatest debuts in the history of rock music. The album features Jimi Hendrix's innovative approach to songwriting and electric guitar playing which soon established a new direction in psychedelic and hard rock music.
Entre mis favs: "Love or Confusion", "May This Be Love", "Are You Experienced?" y "Red House". 9/10
The sound is that of an amphetamine blues-rock with high explosive potential, grouped into short, rough and deadly loads of TNT which erupt in one breath the volcanic energy of the guitar. (8/10) Favourite Tracks: Red House, Purple Haze, May This Be Love
Fantastic specimen of that good old fuzzy blues-rock. Great performances from all involved, and Jimi's vocal delivery imbues even the more melancholy lyrics with an air of confident, unshakeable self-love. Not really a cohesive album statement (it couldn't be with the old practice of changing track listings by region,) but a great collection of songs. Highlights: "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," "Love or Confusion," "I Don't Live Today," "The Wind Cries Mary," "Red House."
Solid. Not as good as Electric Ladyland, but still very good.
Hard to say no to Jimi
Great music but not an amazing album. There are plenty of superb hits, but the album as a whole is quite long and a little inconsistent. Cutting the run time by 2 songs would have made it great, but as is it's good.
First time listening to it and I really liked it. My favorites were: Hey Joe, Are You Experienced?, May This Be Love.
A classic. Amazing guitar
what a banger god i love blues guitar also blues vocals, i think i just love the blues
old but gold
V. good
purple haze is a classic and manic depression takes like 2 minutes to get good. hey joe solo is fantastic.
I really enjoyed this album. Third stone from the sun was weird, but the rest was punchy and cool. I liked the use of the stereo field, it was used like another instrument. It was refreshing to not have the vocals in the middle all the time. I think it really broke the normative positions of instruments and clearly centered the guitar as the most important instrument. Overall I really enjoyed it and will listen to it again.
Pretty good although I don't care too much for guitar noodling like I used to. Track 11 has some interesting ideas I wish was seen more of. Highlights: 1, 7, 10, 11, 12, 17.
fav track: the wind cries mary
Classic
Nice, soft classic rock. Excellencio
Hendrix is such a staple of classic rock that I take it for granted. But what an envelope pushing musician he really is with such a distinct sound. His guitar play is almost lyrical. The album didn’t yield too many surprises, but that’s because of how well-known a lot of the songs are. The usual suspects were Purple Haze, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary, Foxey Lady, Highway Chile. The song Are You Experienced was an interesting one because while I wouldn’t listen to it standalone, it seems to be the defacto thesis statement of the album and important to anchoring its thematically. Of ones I was less familiar, I enjoyed Third Stone from the Sun, Stone Free, and 51st Anniversary. Also worth noting, some of the songs listed here were not on the original release as I’m using Spotify’s version of the album which is incorporating bonus tracks released later. Overall, album isn’t 5 starts because I thought there are a handful of forgettable songs, but the highs are very high. Hendrix’s songs are always open to being in my music rotation.
First time listening: 9/11 songs liked Ageless hard rock album. The unorthodox playing of Jimi and Mitch sound refreshing for being in the late 60's. Already heard many of the classics, but not all at once in one album. Solid listen. Songs saved: 6
Definitely one I have listened to all the way through before - did I have a cassette version of this one? Can't remember. . The floaty backup vocals on Hey Joe are nice, noticing those in a new way. I Don't Live Today is a great example of an \"album\" track, not something I'd love on it's own but a nice edgy transition between May This Be Love and Wind Cries Mary. Note that the Spotify version includes a bunch of bonus tracks, I feel like stopping at the end of the original album (after the title track) is more true to the spirit of the project.
Classic Jimmy revolutionary sound. Doesn't make my playlist though
It's probably been 20 years since I listened to a Hendrix album all the way through. Some real gems there like 'Love or Confusion'. I'll make a point to come back to this.
❤️
Vibes vibes vibes - but a little repetitive if listened to in one sitting. Tempo and the overall musical structure is quite similar for a lot of songs. Doesn't keep my attention for the duration. But there were moments of brilliance that made me sit up in my seat, and it is clear he was ahead of his time - since I don't think you will find something similar in 1967.
Really good album, will want to pick it up at some point. I was a little distracted while listening and will have to give it another go.
Whole lotta bangers on here
The really 'raw' sound is really something I'm not used to, but this is quite nice.
4/5
The Mighty Jimmy!
A lot better than the first time for sure.
Jimi on top form.
Not the most focused album, but song to song it's damn good. Has a little of everything. And he's not even at full powers yet!
A bit of a cacophonous noise album, but his abilities with a guitar an basically magic, and Purple Haze and Wind Cries Mary are gold.
Excellent start - a bit long and runs out of steam a little.
I enjoyed it.
Jesus is that all the Hendrix albums now
If you look at what else was released around that time, this album and Disreali Gears really ushered in Hard Rock. This has so many hits for a debut album, even more impressive when you consider they were almost all penned by Jimi! Of the others I prefer the bluesier, R&B-ish tarcks and not so much the more psychedelic ones. I know Jimi didn't like his voice but I think he's underrated as a singer and a lyricist.
Riffs gloriosos, buena voz, experimental. Guitarra total
I mean basically every song is a single, its all stoner rock, so i cant really say its for me a 5 star album. it gets a little languid in the middle, but hey its great
Killer debut album by Jimi, with very little filler. Innovative mix of blues and psychedelic rock, believe the hype!
I really enjoyed this album, despite the really crappy sound quality of the songs I was listening to.
Great Hendrix album, easily an 8. Electric Ladyland beats this one by a close margin.
