Reviews (page 9 of 14)

Miles' landmark fusion of jazz and rock unfortunately is missing a lot of what I like about both genres. There is a Murderer's Row of talent here (Miles on trumpet, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, guitarist John McLaughlin, keyboardists Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Zawinul, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Tony Williams) but their interplay feels constrained somewhat by having to conform to repetitive funk vamps that underlie most of the album, and also the fact that In A Silent Way is mostly a creation of editing, with 27 minutes of recorded music drawn out to 38 on the album by jazz superproducer Teo Macero, with frequent loops and overdubs. This album and the follow-up, Bitches Brew--which will also be reviewed in this exercise--were largely composed in the editing room. What's here is basically a sonic collage, and while it's very distinctive and atmospheric, substituting the usual rhythm section interplay that was indicative in most recorded jazz of the '60s for the sort of repetitive funk vamping that was prevalent at the time in Black music feels like a step down to me. This album is also a bit too staid for my tastes. Drummer Tony Williams was normally very explosive and rhythmically expressive, but here he mostly confines himself to timekeeping. But it's not bad music by any stretch. I generally like "Shhh" that bookends track 1 (yes, Teo put it on their twice with minimal changes) and the second track "In A Silent Way" has a distinctive film noir feel when it's not soul groovin'. But I don't think I'm alone in finding most jazz fusion an unsatisfying blend of genres. It's peak didn't last very long and more artists now play more traditional forms of jazz, and there's a reason for that.

not a big fan of jazz but this is pretty good

I need to listen again with the tracks separated instead of two long halves of the album.

3 - This was a very pleasant listen, but it's not something that I'm ever going to choose to put on again.

This was surprisingly awesome. I really liked the sound, don’t think I’ll listen again but really appreciated.

“Is that elevator music?” I am angered by my inability to find the adjectives best suited for writing these. Dark room, bourbon on the rocks, cigar smoke. Feels right? Shocked to see two “songs” when I first opened the album. I like this, I really do. Will I remember it in 3 days, sure, but I’m probably not going out of my way to play this again. Next chance? Fall night, out on the deck with yes of course, a bourbon on the rocks. 6.7/10

6 - AVERAGE

Two 20 min ambient (really this time not like yesterday, no words) songs. Good for cleaning house on warm sunny day. Slow ambient jazz like this makes me feel 20th century Parisian

My most enjoyable Jazz album so far. The drumming gave it a more regular rhythm and it felt less noodly. Only managed 3 listens so not yet a convert - but could see myself returning and enjoying it more.

While Jazz is not my thing, I was pleasantly surprised how good Miles Davis' compositions were. Of course, it's not as exciting as other genres and it's not something I would listen to on a daily basis but I can acknowledge that Davis is a supremely talented artist. Best pieces of this performance are Shhh and Peaceful. 7/10, this isn't just elevator music, come on people.

Nice, nothing memorable per se, but nice.

"What a short album! Oh...." This is really what I needed this morning to settle me down after a chaotic drop off. I'm just curious about how he performed these songs! Did he just never take a break? I knew he was impressive but damn.

Ok jazz record. Some beautiful sections but also some uninteresting, slow parts. Not my kind of jazz but still a fine listen

Loved it!

This album is fine, but with 3 other Miles Davis records on the list that are exactly the ones you'd expect, this is extraneous.

A bit boring, but rather nice to listen to on a walk

Easy on the ears.

Decent chill

Faktisk helt ok.

I like Miles Davis. I do not like this album. I understand from an intellectual perspective what made him special, and the new ground he broke with records like this. Unfortunately, that new ground was a little too chaotic to really enjoy much of. I'll stick with Kind of Blue, thank you.

Two songs and still impact. Pretty impressive.

interesante

It was ok. Good jazz

woo first album. I liked it. Instrumental. Not crazy about it but it's cool to see how bebop and rock evolved out of jazz.

1 st song was great i love drums and guitar parts combined with synth piano 2nd also cool but i think not as good as first and a bit too long, apart from that i really enjoyed listening 7/10

QUAAAANTO TEMPO CADA MÚSICA??? Carai.

My most enjoyable Jazz album so far. The drumming gave it a more regular rhythm and it felt less noodly. Only managed 3 listens so not yet a convert - but could see myself returning and enjoying it more.

A two song album?? A two song 38 minute album?? What in the world is going on here. Ok yeah I like this it's shaking it's grooving let's get moving. Are there lyrics?? Is this all instrumental?? Reminds me of that old kids cartoon future show meet the jets?? Is that what it's called?? With the Susie the robot?? Okay play it I guess but what are we doing. This is a very interesting way to do anything. I think this may be all instrumental. I mean ok. Oh well it is called in a silent way. The way is just silent I suppose. Favourite: Shh / Peaceful Least favourite: In a Silent Way

The background music is good, but the fact that there are only two such long tracks is confusing. Rate 5/10

I don't know much about music theory or musical history in general so jazz is always kind of terrifying for me, and jazz fusion even more so. This was a pleasant listen overall. I enjoyed In a Silent Way more than Shh/Peaceful. I don't know what it was, I think the drums, but the repetition kind of grates on my brain after a while. The acoustic guitar at the start of In a Silent Way was a like balm after that.

checked the album to see that it was two ~19 minute long songs and i am both scared and excited to see what i'm in for thoughts after listening : - reaallyyy long songs that truly take you on a journey. - not really my style, but i still think these are nice songs! if you like classical jazz, i'd recommend them to you. 3 / 5 stars

Miles Davis and jazz in general are not my favorite. This is my third Miles Davis album so far, and I have to admit this one was pretty good. The editing in the first track threw me off; I'm not sure why they chose to chop up the track the way they did, but it still works well, even if the transitions are a bit choppy at times. The beginning of the track "In a Silent Way" is beautiful; even though the guitar is out of tune! Anyways. A really strong and interesting jazz record. THREE STARS

I’ve not listened to much real jazz. I’ve listened to jazz that makes sense, not the kind of jazz where it seems most of the people in the band are playing different songs than the rest of the band is, or are all soloing at the same time, you know, what some might call noise. I’m not sure Miles Davis is like that, or at least like that all the time, because he’s a household name. Dudes who play racket or make noise aren't usually household names. So, here we go. Okay, I see the album is essentially two songs. The first track is Shhh/Peaceful, and the second track is In a Silent Way/It’s About That Time. The album is around 38 minutes long. I listen to prog rock and stoner rock with 19 and 20 minute songs, so that’s no big deal. I’m out of my element here. It’s not just noise, though Miles Davis does get up on some notes that I’m sure would make a dog howl, but it's just a solid groove with the bass and drums holding it down. An organ and other keys are sprinkling around in the background while Davis blasts his horn. Now the guitar has made an appearance, and this guy is soloing his arse off without breaking a sweat. So far, Shhh/Peaceful just sounds like controlled chaos. The song is far from being peaceful to me. It kind of fills me with anxiety. , However, it transitions into Silent Way/It’s About That Time, it’s very calm and I feel like I’m outside in the nightime laying in the grass, looking up at the stars. Very peaceful and calm. Those keys are very relaxing. Love that sound. Here comes Davis and his trumpet. Now it feels like it’s kicked into It’s About That Time as the tempo has picked up and Davis is stabbing my ears with his trumpet. This is getting into a nice little groove. I’m doing a little chair dancing, the first time with this album. We’ve come back to lying in the grass watching the stars again. The keys are making a little twinkling sounds. Davis’s trumpet is kind of adding an ominous feel to the otherwise relaxing vibe. And that’s it. Truthfully, jazz confuses me. After the Davis album finished, YouTube Music started playing a song called Le Lis by Billy Cobbham and I swear it was better than anything I heard on the Davis album. Turns out Cobbham is a jazz drummer, so maybe that’s where I am with jazz. I need a hot drummer. On the Davis album, the drummer was just a solid back beat time keeper. I feel like an idiot saying I didn’t enjoy arguably the greatest jazz musician ever, but I really didn’t. After checking with Wikipedia, turns out this album is Davis kind of moving away from his usual style and going in more of a jazz fusion direction. I swear, YouTube Music keeps playing better stuff than Davis’s music. Now, a song called Half-Forgotten Daydreams is playing by John Cameron and it’s great. After more Wikipedia studying, it seems even critics were split when this album came out. Davis went electric on this album, it seems, and purists, much like when Bob Dylan went electric, didn’t like it. Critic Phil Freeman said of the album, “It didn't swing, the solos weren't even a little bit heroic, and it had electric guitars... But though In a Silent Way wasn't exactly jazz, it certainly wasn't rock.” That sums it up for me. There was no swing. It was like one tempo, with each instrument taking a turn to play a solo, that really didn’t blow me away. Tho I did like the guitars in Shhh/Peaceful. I’m interested in hearing more from Davis, but as I’ve found in the past, his stuff doesn’t do much for me.

Much more enjoyable than I would have expected as it's typically not my thing. Especially loved Flamenco Sketches; very wistful and melodic.

I really enjoy the way the percussion drives you. Thay first track especially made me want to go for a walk. 3.5

Miles Davis is greatly talented but I don’t like jazz that sounds like one long jam session

Jazz that's a bit too low tempo for me to love it but definitely good background music.

Those drums with the little brushes like riding in a train car, man. You listen to those individual parts and wonder how they fit together with anything because it feels so improv but then they surprise you how they shuffle in with each other.

ehhh its just jazz

It's between a three and a four. Maybe if bits of it were broken down into smaller tracks, it'd be a four. It's pretty good jazz with a lot of odd mixed in. Top track: "Shh/Peaceful"

First track is a certified leg tapper, second track is very soothing. Great jazz performance I could listen to in the background the whole day.

Its good, but.....i dont know how to explain it, did not match my day (?)

Okay with some stunning moments. This was never gonna appeal to me as it lacks any lyrics which is still my number one criteria for judging any project on here. When it works for me it's quite good I just don't know how I would ever remember any of this I can't remember anything but the simplest or the most annoying tunes without words. However maybe this makes it more special the only time I can experience this is while listening to I can't just replicate it in my mind? Anyway my rating is low know but it's because I'm a Jazz philistine.

Cool sound journey and important for Miles' future sounds.

Really worked best for me as some background music. Didn’t engage much with this album, but it was pleasant to listen to.

Only two really long tracks. Kind of cool!

Sounded very pretty, but I just can’t get on the jazz train. For a genre I don’t care for, this sounds pretty good I guess?

Ja(zz). Tittellåta er vesentlig bedre enn den andre... Ja.. det er bare to låter!

Jazz is good. I particularly liked the second one. I’m no jazz connoisseur, though, so this didn’t mean what it was probably supposed to mean to me.

I don't usually listen to jazz but this was good! Not something I would listen to regularly but I could appreciate the music :)

It was jazz, it was good, but nothing special. About what we expected. Surprisingly motivating for work, though.

I mean, what was I expecting. Everything is in the title :) Not really my style, but felt good, really calm and lets you focus on other things

what an interesting experience! not my genre, this is mood music but like a very specific mood. imagine zen tangling with this that would be so relaxing.

en vrai cool pour cuisiner

Not up to others kind of way.

Very enjoyable although it didn’t really stick with me. 3.5 stars

Maybe a little more accessible Miles for those who can’t go all in on a some of his more challenging stuff.

so burring

lovely bit of jazz, first song > second song

Enjoyed this album very much. Unique guest rugs that have been samples in hip hop, but I couldn't quite place them.

Ahh, is this this first Jazz album on my 1001 journey? I have listened to a few of the greats over the years and it is fair to say none of them have done anything for me. Primarily because I dislike the sound of brass instruments. Second - they're just a lot of twiddling and anti-melodic nonsense. But perhaps today is the day I discover my first good Jazz album... It's not as bad as I was dreading. I don't think I'll ever love Jazz, but this was much more varied than what I've heard before. The arrangements weren't as loose, motifs were more impactful, and crucially there were more interesting instruments employed and given centre stage. The drumming is less bombastic and more funky, the music is less big-band, we have keyboards, we have guitars! Minutes pass without a single parp of brass. Again, as someone who loves vocals, lyrics, the emotion brought forth by the human mind through the conduit of the human voice, instrumental albums such as this are a struggle. As someone who knows there way around an instrument or two, I will always appreciate the skill and tightness of the musicians here. This is a great showcase. But if the music is dull or I cannot connect to it on more than a purely technical level, then it's not likely to be an album I'll remember or want to listen to again. The music on this one is rarely dull but after a few tracks I do get distracted and yearn for something different - a voice, a different beat or rhythm. There's little emotional connection. I am obliged therefor to give precisely a three star review. For me, for a Jazz album, that is high praise.

It was alright. Sounded very experimental, required my fullest attention. Wouldn't put this on unless I needed inspiration. This album appeals to a specific audience and I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it. And even then, I think there are better albums for that.

I am not a jazz fan and therefore can’t give it higher than a 3. I can tell that Miles Davis has great talent though.

I felt like I was in Twin Peaks. It was fun and mysterious. I wouldn’t listen on a day to day basis but I would like to get into some other pieces by Miles Davis.

only two songs but they’re both rly long. super talented musician but it lowkey made me bummed when i was rly just looking for some hype up music.

This probably shouldn’t have been my introduction to Miles Davis but I thought it was interesting. I like jazz and I know this was meant to be experimental but it maybe just wasn’t what I expected? The album is just two longer songs which fit well but I didn’t really feel the “album” aspect of that - which probably doesn’t make any sense

Goeie jazz

The second half of this record was much better than the first. The first was too chaotic for me. I prefer the smoooooth jazz style that was featured on side 2.

Back to back jazz albums? Today was rough listening.

If companies are looking for new hold music for their phone lines, might I recommend this entire album? I didn't realize my Music app was set to repeat until I was on what I think was my third listen through because there was just so little to distinguish one section of a song from the next - or any other. This is both a testament to how monotonous this album's sound is - but also how not bad that monotony is. So, 3 stars it is.

If sitting in an idling car was an album.

I wish I could emulate the passion others have for jazz. It’s just pleasant background to me - in one ear and out the other.

Review - Not a bad album but not as good as his best stuff. Also why have two 18 minute songs rather than a bunch of shorter songs? Not taking into account how I listen to stuff in playlists, how dare he Rating - 5.5/10 Need to hear? YES

Not really my style

It’s not for me…38 min 2 songs…jam band! 😂

Didn’t like the dissonance of the first part but enjoyed the rest.

Pleasant enough, probably won’t ever listen again, but I can appreciate it was pretty good musicianship.

Quite a frustrating album in a way. The first half made me feel oddly anxious, insofar as it felt like just one intro which occasionally seemed like it would let go, but never did. The second half was better when it finally got a bit of a groove on, but not exactly edge of the seat stuff. At least they got things going more in the follow up album.

“in a silent way” was probably my favorite out of the two, im not a huge fan of really long songs such as these but i could see myself listening to them in the future as like background music for tasks.

Inspiring

oriental rice cracker. incandescent edison bulb. cracked porcelain sink. 1. In A Silent Way *** 2. Shh / Peaceful ** hard to judge; not really my thing. like the intro to In A Silent Way. ***** - Best of the Best **** - Very Good *** - Decent ** - Average to Below Average * - Awful % - Straight Garbo

I would rate this 3/5⭐️. It has jazz vibes but in a contemporary way . It reminds of the soundtrack of the princess and the frog . I would listen to this if I wanted a slow afternoon in autumn vibes. It made me feel relaxed and good .

There were only 2 songs, 20 mins each. Made me appreciate the era of longer songs.

Yep, it's jazz. I would've prefered listening to this live rather than as an album, as it's kinda just the same tone for 38 min. Definitely something I like to have on in the background while doing other stuff. The second half of In a Silent Way is very pleasant.

Some decent Jazz, I guess.

Really good 2 song jazz album. Funky. Liked the opening minutes and the closing minutes best.

Had never listened to anything like it before. Was more intrigued by the 2nd half of the album if I am being honest.

Peaceful, pretty sure this gets sampled a lot. Cool solos!!

Mellower, more ambient. A prototype for his further experimentation with Bitches Brew.

A quick and smooth listen. Both tracks offer its own different approaches. Shhh/Peaceful still exhibits some energy and features a groovy guitar and what sounds like an organ. In A Silent Way feels like a dream sequence with the light piano and bass. It’s something I would put on when I’m winding down.

I'm not a jazz guy, lets start with that caveat. This is good, I appreciate the idea of fleshing out a musical theme/thought/feeling for as long as it needs to be born, live and breathe and then die. I like music on the more progressive side so maybe that is what I found appealing about this. Much how I appreciate Mozart I prefer Beethoven, I can truly see the appeal of all the delicate twinkly beauty but I prefer a little meat and potatos mixed in. For ME this isn't something earth shattering but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. I can see why this has been and will continue to be fawned over for a long time.

Cool but I guess I just don’t love the genre. Good as background for me, not really foreground music.

What the sigma

Good overall vibe but a bit too long of a song for my taste. Gives slow cold Monday morning vibes.

My son's middle name is Davis, partially because of this man but also Jonathan Davis of Korn & Jon Davis creator of Garfield. Miles Davis is also my father's favorite jazz musician. In my twentys, I went on a brief jazz fixation. Davis' Bitches Brew & Herbie Hancock was what I consumed. Guess who's on the keys on this album? Herbie. That's the crazy part.about all these jazz legends, they all played together. I found this to be a very somber jazz album but I believe that was Davis, intentions. Most likely due to this being the first electric jazz album. I preferred In A Silent Way, the music landscape was a bit more upbeat. One other thing, my ears absolutely hates that high pitch struggle note that the trumpet hits at times. Luckily it only happened a few times. 3

Favourite - So what Worst - Blue in green Rating - 6.5/10

Easy listening Fav song: Shh / Peaceful

ok primeira impression fiquei tipo 2 musicas? is this a single or what? depois do nada vejo 38 minutos so i already know this is gonna be special OH GIRL TAVA MM A PRECISAR DE UM JAZZINHO AMO ok final thoughts gostei, ótima música ambiente mas pronto acaba por não ter imenso replay value por causa disso, mas good music

This genre isn't my thing but I can absolutely appreciate the artistry! I was impressed with how long the tracks were and the stamina of the musicians.

Really cool jazzy vibe, definitely am kind of getting the hold music vibe but this is also quite ambient

Enjoyed the experimentation, though it’s hard to hear through the decades of influence since. The group is certainly jamming at force.

Ok, but not for me

Minute 16 of "In a Silent Way" was incredible. It sounded silent, even though there is music the entire time.

Pretty good background work/studying music.

I’ve never really been a jazz fan ,but I didn’t mind these songs. It may encourage me to explore more jazz.

this one is a head scratcher to me. i've know heard some of davis' work here and there, but nothing i can directly place. this album is kinda making me feel insane because i can't tell if i love it or hate it. it's no doubt deeply influential in the way that it is on the forefront of synthesizing modern electric instruments into the body of jazz from a legendary artist, but how do i feel about it as a listening experience? not a clue! to my ear the keyboard and the guitar feel so deeply at odds with the acoustic instruments and i do not know how to synthesize (hah) them. the arrangement of the players (side one in particular) made it feel like i had multiple tabs playing audio at once. it was wildly disorienting, even on a second listen. is it good, is it bad, do i just feel okay with it.... i don't know. normally i have words to describe my feelings on art from experience in doing so even when i lack useful context to make more articulate observations, but trying to parse this feels like asking for my opinion on a sentence said in chinese. i don't know man i don't speak chinese.

Chill and cool

Really enjoyed this flow. to make a 2 song album impactful is impressive and I enjoyed this each time I listened. Made me very relaxed!

I adored the first track. It was completely the opposite of shhh and peaceful. It’s was filled with chaotic energy and I thought all the instrumentation was amazing and the one that really stood out was the guitar playing. My only complaint about this album is I didn’t love the second track at all. It wasn’t bad, just not memorable or as impactful as the first song. I definitely enjoyed this album way more than most jazz albums though so that’s saying something.

Fun record.

I prefer music I can sing along too, but this was very relaxing and great background music while trying to focus on other things at work.

Genre: Jazz Fuzion I like jazz. I like jazz fusion. Heck, I’d even go as far as saying I’ve listened to some terrific modal jazz in my time. This was an album I was really looking forward to. And it’s kind of just totally “okay”. It plods along for most of its runtime setting the mood and the pace. There are a few nice crescendos here and there, but overall, this one did not hit me the way I expecting it to. Maybe I’m just a dumb idiot. But I’ve heard better jazz. 3/5

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. At first listen I was disappointed, but it grew on me after I kept going.

Mini tangent: Thought my app was glitching for a second. This entire album only has 2 songs on it, huh?? Well, that’s a new one. I wonder how many albums are only going to have 2 songs for this project. Can you really call this an album with just 2 songs?? Surely none of them have just 1, right?? Now that would be comedy. Ok, tangent over, let’s start the review. This is my second Miles Davis album, following Birth Of The Cool, which I enjoyed but don’t really remember any of really, because it’s Jazz. You’ll never believe it, but this is also just Jazz. I don’t love it, but I for sure don’t hate it. It is competently made, and it’s easy to listen to. You’d think having just 2 songs would make it easy for me to pick a favorite, but I really just can’t tell them apart enough to make a decision here. It’s literally a coin flip. Going to go with “Shhh/Peaceful” as whatever is going on towards the middle of the song is pretty good. As far as Jazz albums go on the site, this is one of them. That is my review. Thank you.

As I’ve said in other reviews, like yeah it’s jazz, it’s not bad or anything but it’s just alright

Good but... not QUITE my tempo

5/10 - I am not a huge jazz person, but even amongst the jazz I have listened to, this album does not stand out. Nothing on this album made me say, “I can get into this” or “maybe jazz is for me”.

That certainly is jazz! I don't hate it, but it's never going to be my favorite.

I'm not really crazy about fusion, but this is like a nice smooth gentle introduction to fusion. It's a really nice atmosphere. I'm getting used to and really enjoying herbies playing too. I feel like Miles doesn't sing on this like I'm used to on different records, but I probably just need to adjust to the style.

Good study music -

One of the albums that started jazz fusion for smiles Davis. Great stuff, and a foreshadowing of things to come.

Przyjemny background music

Really like this record. Not my favorite by Miles, but up there.

3/5 - really good background music, not my thing though

Jazz is not always for me!

Only two tracks! A more subtle jazz rock record than I what initially expected

I was not able to enjoy this too much. Not that I didn't like it, but id didn't move me all that much.

Pretty fucking awesome. Miles Davis fusion weirdo stuff.

If peeing your pants is cool....

I must have been in the mood for it because that’s the first jazz album I’ve listened to and not thought it was a waste of time.

- kyllä tätä kuuntelis mielellään aurinkoisena, raikkaana talvivapaapäivänä

Made for very nice flight check-in music

Not a Miles record I know so it took me a little while to get into it, and maybe one I need to revisit to appreciate more. First half felt a little too one paced but much more going on on the flip side.

I like this era of Miles Davis better than the experimental phase, in this he’s using more electric instruments. But it’s still freaky and arrythmic and cool to listen to

Kyllä Miles ihan toimii, vähän rupeaa toistamaan.⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tykkäsin.

I don’t like jazz. However, this type of jazz is much easier on the ear than the Duke Ellington kind of jazz. Not bad, I just never need to listen to it again

Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5

It's a good thing Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone saved jazz

Well, that wasn’t bad (for jazz.) And even better that the album was only 38 minutes listen time. Sounds like Miles going electric with jazz was about as controversial as Dylan going electric in folk. Ye olde guard could see their genres fading, could sense rock coming on strong, and were reluctant to the inevitable change. It was twelve years since Birth Of The Cool dropped, so I went back in time and checked that one out again. And what a huge difference! The 60s were a decade of major upheaval. In A Silent Way is an improvement of the usual bad jazz an comes in at (2.8*s) Got a long way to go to start liking jazz…

I don't really like jazz much but this was ok to have on while I worked.

Not quite at the level of truly appreciating this yet but this is two sides of solid music that form a coherent LP. I'll take that any day

Godkjent

Det ble litt mye jazz for meg

In terms of an album like bitches brew it is not really. It is 2 very interesting compositions which catch fire for a little bit but like any firework fades into the night sky.

Very cool album

I had this on while I was doing some work and I liked it

I do not know a single thing about Miles Davis but I've heard the name. It seems to be jazz and I seem to be automatically not that excited because of my simpleton approach to music. I think this is very pleasant maybe to work to. It's like lounge music it's very nice. PBS music. NPR music. Music for hot chocolate and notebooks.

First listen

Very soothing

Classic stuff that served well in the background while I did a pile of paperwork. Again with these jazz albums I always think they’d go so much better live. (3.5 stars)

It's Miles Davis, and a good one at that! Really liked it. Not the best person to comment on jazz and fusion, but from what I had heard from Miles, this is one of my favourites. That said, it is a jazz record, and not for every set of ears. As a jazz record, it is pretty good imo. As a record in itself, it fits a genre really hard, so makes it hard to rank on an everyday "omg I want to listen to it" scale.

Twee nummers.

Okay, I guess In A Silent Way is a little too far out (man) to go in my Jazzy Dinner Party playlist. But I cannot hold that against the album too much, if only for its perceived influence. The "In A Silent Way" track points the way to Brian Eno's ambient albums. Then the track goes into a motif that is seemingly echoed in The Rolling Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," released two years later.

Very good jazz

7/10 jazz is not my style but it's cool

Helt ok, fant ingenting bemerkelsesverdig ved dette.

Jazz at this level can truly carry you away. Miles is distinctive and immersive as usual.

Not bad.

Real jazz — made with feeling, captured in a perfect moment. It doesn’t feel planned at all. ‘In a silent way' is a great track to listen to while working or just relaxing

Really nice jazz 7/10

So versatile, this album is going all kinds of places

If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis...but for real, this album was okay for what it was. Favorite Track: "Shh/Peaceful".

It’s jazz. Fine but cannot differentiate songs at all

I don't understand it, but I don't dislike it.

Not bad at all, but really not my style and not something I feel like diving deeper into

This is obviously on its way to the sound of Bitches Brew, a record I do not enjoy. In a Silent Way has more to offer. I prefer the groove on track two than one. I could even imagine putting this on once in a while.

Aul Miles sure could suck the fuck outta that trumpet

Cool, chill instrumental jazz album

This sounds like a 2-song, 38 minute jam session. Not terrible, but if “Kind of Blue” is the bar, this falls quite short of that.

First half jaunty, idyllic locomotive heist, second half music that sounds like peripheral vision.

Some good jazz. Not much else to say.

I'm not a big fan of Davis's fusion era but this is a nice transition into it. In his vast catalogue I often forget about this album so it was nice to have the project shine a light on it.

If I recall correctly, "Kind of Blue" was my first 5 star I gave for this project. I do not like jazz fusion, though. At all. As background music played softly, this is tolerable. As a focused listen, however, I really just cannot. 3 stars.

2 songs in 40 minutes. Miles exploring guitar fusion, is good and full of interesting grooves and improvisations, but I think I still prefer the more straight-ahead, earlier work of his. Solid, but not essential.

I’m hardly a jazz aficionado, but I dug this. Felt like I could have been in The Thomas Crown Affair stealing some art. 3.5⭐️

It's alright I guess. I liked the other Miles album - "Kind of Blue" a lot more than this one.

Hard one to pin down as it's not something I'd normally throw on. It's fun but I found myself zoning out a couple times. Although I did have trouble concentrating on my work while listening so maybe my mind was trying to tell me to listen to it more.

5/10 It's ok - it mainly sits in the background. It is so hard to see this as groundbreaking as it is really mellow. But I think fundamentally I don't get it, it doesn't sit within my field of vision, so I can only judge it against the music I do like.

Definitely the best jazz ive heard but still not for me

For all the respect that Miles definitely deserves, this was one of his less engaging works. You can clearly see how groundbreaking it was... but only two tracks, both of which are pretty much just a two-chord loop with other instrumentation garnished over the top. Probably great as Ambient work or to accompany a trip, but as a listening experience I'd go for Sketches of Spain or Kind of Blue every time. Still a high 3 because it's Miles - a pleasant listen, just not as engaging or mindblowing as some of his work

Skipped for now

It’s fine.

very nice! persona vibes.

I enjoyed the second track best, but this sort of album requires close listening that the first listen didn't compel me to revisit for.

Only two track but divergent themes. Fusion jazz.

Overall, I enjoyed this album. I believe this was my first time listening to a Miles Davis album in full. Typically this is not music I normally gravitate towards but it was pleasant and enjoyable to listen to. A bit repetitive at times but nice chill music to have on in the background while doing other things. I would give this a listen again in the future!

Not my favorite time period for Miles Davis. Really enjoy his earlier works though.

Can’t lie I didn’t listen

another really good jazz album from Miles Davis

I recognize that this is good, but the piercing trumpet just wasn’t chill to me. Maybe chill wasn’t the point of this album. If I was more of a jazz fan I’d probably like this one a lot more.

I remember liking this when I first heard it years ago - I think because, contrary to a lot of the other opinions here, I found it a lot more accessible than the other jazz I'd been exposed to at that time, perhaps because it doesn't feature dozens of confusing chord changes but just grooves along in a pleasingly minimal way, and perhaps because I was familiar with a lot of ambient and experimental stuff that it may have influenced. However, it really is minimal - not a lot happens for long stretches of time. And given that about a third of the running time is quite literally cut and pasted from elsewhere on the record, which whole sections repeated verbatim, it's kind of tricky to really call this an essential album. Enjoyable enough though.

It's jazz, I don't know what else to say

This felt like playing SimCity3000. IYKYK

Nota: 3.5

Album 10/1001 Not one of my favourite of Miles but apparently a hugely important and influential record which marked the beginning of jazz fusion. Much prefer the second track to the first. Favourite song: In A Silent Way 🤫

Pretty nice, liked the calm, almost Brian Eno-esque ambient/serene parts

Would be better if it was separated into more than two tracks

Decent jazz. Not the best I’ve heard, but far from the worst.

not a fan a jazz but Mr. Davis is a talented trumpet player. Music was ok. Keyboard/synthesizer detracted from the sound.

Some great instrumentals

2 songs, pretty jazzy

One of the best jazz albums I've listened to, but then I don't like jazz. Two songs, 40 minutes, very relaxed. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it. 3+

No lyrics, but interesting enough jazz to keep my attention. Miles Davis was beyond talented and a prolific musician. I enjoyed this album though it is not my usual style. Glad I jammed it!

Music with a nice atmosphere. Interesting enough. 6/10 because it wasn’t quite really in the realms of excellency. 28/08/25

better than bitches brew

Two song. 40 minutes. What? I'm not really a huge Jazz guy but this is definitely one of the better jazz albums I've heard.

This one was "quieter" than I was expecting, but had a nice vibe.

there is sometihng here,kinda

Not a jazz fan, but this was still pretty good.

-I love this man and his trumpet -I like the subtle drumming in the back keeping the songs moving -Long as hell but can I really complain -The funky keyboard sounds in the back kinda of kill me sometimes but i love them at the same time

I really enjoyed the first track, though it took me a few minutes to warm up to it. The title track had an offputting tone to it--I'm not sure if it was the recording or my headphones or what was going on but there was a low tone which didn't resonate with me.

Jazz. Its Jazz.

A little slow at times, but such sweet sweet jazz.

Cool stuff, better than I was expecting

3.0 - Ok

Damn, took almost 25 min for the drummer to find the snare... This is not for me, definition of background music, not bad but also kinda boring...

Muy inmersivo pero plano en general. No se que otra wea decir. Nota: 3/5

would benefit from some song structure

I guess I don't really know what jazz is because this didn't sound like anything I'd recognize as jazz, but I liked it.

Fine mellow jazz.

very silent i like it

I enjoyed the second track more than the first, though both were pleasant enough in a chilled out sort of way. It's the sort of music I want to fall asleep to, rather than to sit listening to in a critical way. But I will critique it anyway... Half of the time Miles Davis isn't playing, so big up to the rest of the band. I do think that some artists get a lot of credit just because of who they are and not necessarily for the album itself. It's Miles Davis so it must be a 5?. If this was just any old trumpeter then the album may not have even been made. However I do like the way that Davis makes his trumpet sound like an oboe with the mute he uses. But you do have to think why not just use an oboe? All things considered, I liked it. I will keep it in my library. But I think I will need to be an a particular mood or in a specific headspace to listen to it again 3½

You really hear the evolution of Miles Davis' sound (and by association, his influence on the jazz genre) throughout this list. I think this is the third album of his that I've received already, with the first two (Kind of Blue & Bitches Brew) being on opposite ends of his career spectrum. Specifically here seems to be when Davis began to experiment with jazz fusion, adding electric instruments into the mix such as the electric piano, organ, and guitar. There may be only two tracks here, but each track is technically separated into its own sections. That is very apparent in side two, where the electric piano and drums will abruptly kick in at times. It's all pretty chill without completely slowing down however. Reading contemporary reviews of this album, many dubbed this as "neither jazz nor rock", which is somewhat accurate I guess. It's still jazz at its core if Miles Davis is involved. Although this was the start of Davis' shift towards fusion and experimentation in his work. This would continue into the 70's, starting with "Bitches Brew" (which I'll admit that I was maybe too harsh on in my initial review, but I was like a month into this list when getting that album). I do prefer this to some of his later works however. Jazz fusion as a whole may be a miss on some people, but "In a Silent Way" should prove to be more digestible than others.

Alright jazz. Still can't tell much apart. I suppose I can only tell jazz apart from how it makes me feel, and this was just feeling average

I can't say I disliked this album, but I struggled to keep my attention on it as it went. I did enjoy it more than the last Davis album I got on here (though that isn't saying much). I liked its sonic/stylistic qualities even if it didn't engage me that much. There was some good stuff there, but it wasn't really for me. Overall: 2.5/5

It somehow reminds me of The Doors

2 ~20 minute chill instrumental jazz tracks. They were good but I wasn’t really paying enough attention to tell the tracks apart. Best song: Shh/Peaceful Notable(s): In A Silent Way

Good album. Not my style of music but very peaceful! 6.4/10

Perfect album to listen to while working/studying. However, I fear the fine notions flew past me. I'm usually a huge jazz enthusiast with an only marginal knowledge, therefore, I'm more into clear, bigger solos. These were lacking here in my opinion.

Enjoyed, but maybe not favorite. More experimental side of Miles Davis.

Chilled.

not bad, but I didn't feel a lot while listening

I enjoy jazz, this was solid. The guy is clearly a world class musician. Just not sure how much this is my vibe. I can respect and appreciate it.

Good background music, but a little sleepy for me

Makes for some chill out and vibe background music.

Miles is immortal but dude was just kinda doodling here not sure why this is on the list

Respectable, no doubt. Not my usual listening.

Abstract jazz. Meh. Miles is awesome

Nice listen

Not a fan of this style of jazz but Miles Davis is a legend and does it as well as any of the best.

end of first song fell off for me but overall a good listen

First time properly listening to Miles David and what a great experience! I find lots of jazz albums to be a bit too long/boring but this one is just the right length and has some exciting things going on 3/5

Once again, all instrumental jazz is just not my thing.

Cool but also a very forgettable middle part

Not my cup of tea but can see why he is highly rated

This album only has 2 good songs on it. I enjoyed this for what it was. Self disclosure: I am not a trumpet guy and I struggle with Jazz.

I’m just an unfrozen caveman lawyer…this kind of music scares me.

I enjoy Miles Davis but I found this one only average.

A very pleasant album to listen to. Wasn't expecting entirely instrumental but I enjoyed it a fair bit in the background. While its not my cup of tea right now, I can definitely see myself revisiting and potentially liking more of this album. This record has extremely catchy sounds littered across both tracks that will have something for someone. Favourite Tracks: In A Silent Way Least Favourite: Shhh/Peaceful

Soothing jazz album. Like the side a more than b.

Doing some internet browsing on this album, and apparently in 1969 jazz critics were upset that electric guitars were used on this record. The horror! Well to me this album sounds like regular jazz, very ethereal at times. Might be good for museum music.

This must be the first 2-track album I've heard. After all the yelly albums earlier this week, 'Shh/Peaceful' & 'In a Silent Way' certainly seem promising titles. And this is comparatively peaceful, nice little snares/toots & strings, although 'Shh/Peaceful' is actually less peaceful than 'In a Silent Way', which I like better. Pleasant, but non-orchestral instrumentals are a tough sell for me.

Jazzy.

El tema "In A Silent Way" me pareció muy lindo.

Always cool to hear old Jazz, especially by the 🐐

Groovy brotha!

Easy to listen to. Talent

I enjoyed the overall vibe of this one but I wouldn't say it was anything special to me. Some folks saying this was a sort of process switch for Miles, but I'm not so familiar with him that I'd know. Long songs, though. Pretty cool to hear those just keep on going and not get too repetitive to me.

respectfully,,,, 2 songs 38 mins is crazy work. otherwise it was chill

chillig

A chill, ambient Miles album - kinda fusiony, I guess. I'm no jazz expert. Here is the personnel on this album and I'll just let them speak for themselves: Miles Davis – trumpet Wayne Shorter – soprano saxophone John McLaughlin – electric guitar Chick Corea – electric piano Herbie Hancock – electric piano Joe Zawinul – electric piano, organ Dave Holland – double bass Tony Williams – drums A bunch of legends.

I thought I had the wrong album at first because it was so short. 2 songs at under 40 minutes. Apparently that's right though. It was okay. Not really my thing.

The album title says it! Peaceful and smooth, but not sleepy.

Gorgeous, lush, beautiful, dynamic, layered and amazing sounding record? Yes! Kind of insane that virtuoso drummer Tony Williams plays a hi-hat-only shuffle for the entire 20-minute first song? ALSO YES!

Regular jazz. Don't wanna listen to it. 3/5

Intricate

I know this is damming with faint praise but it’s nice to have on in the background. I like Miles Davis and especially enjoy it when he’s pushing the boundaries but this one just doesn’t have enough grit to hold my attention.

Okay, but can we talk about how this album is only 2 songs but 38 minutes long? I enjoyed the song "In a Silent Way" but I can't always set aside 20 minutes to listen to it.

Always good but not his best.

This was a pretty chill album, although at times it had these unnecessarily stressful jazz moments where the music gets off-key and it is very difficult to listen to, but this was mostly a nice album to have in the background or to even pay attention to. I was really excited to see that there were only two songs in the album, but each was almost 20 minutes long, so it was just a normal short album long. Overall, pretty nice, nothing too exciting but also not disappointing.

Super long but very cool. Had nice piano and guitar. Overall pretty good jazz

mjög svalt. rökkur og krár. alveg aðra inni. 3,5.

Miles Davis, Good chill Jazz, nothing more, nothing less
