Nicht meins
Maybe I'm just not a jazz guy
This felt very ahead of its time
Would listen to as passive music.
Similar style to Bitches Brew, but I like this better for some reason…less meandering(?) The guitar on the back half is perfect. More than 3, less than 4 stars on this.
Hat das Album nur 2 Songs? Sehr jazzyy. Da bin ich noch nicht so im Game
Surprisingly what I liked most about this was the great guitar touches, there are wonderful quiet sections when Miles is not playing! I know he is heralded as a genius, this is definitely great music, but I don't really connect with it and find it a bit boring.
Nice jazz 👍
Track one set a great mood and felt like it was building well, but ultimately didn’t really go anywhere. I was begging for it to burst into a big crescendo, but it never really did. Track two set a very different mood with some repeating piano phrases toying with dissonance to create a slightly nervy timbre. This track develops more than the first, moving into an elevated funky section, then regressing. Interesting album, and I enjoyed listening to it in a critical environment. I wouldn’t rank it among my top jazz albums, but I liked the underlying feeling of mystery and intrigue.
I heard this album all day. It didn't bother me, but it also didn't hook me. So, whereas I completely love "Kind of Blue", I'm pretty indifferent to this album.
Sonically cool, but the lack of traditional song structure just makes it feel like an extended intro to a cool song that never arrives.
Maybe too avant garde for me but at least it wasn't long.
Interesting listen but too experimental for my tastes. The repetitive parts I did enjoy, but I couldn't say I enjoyed the whole album. There was a lot of dissonant phrases that were too experimental for me.
Only two songs? ohhh they’re very long!!! jazz i’d say 6/10. it’s good but i never listen to jazz on my own
Short album, kind of boring though. 2.5
Cool ride
If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.
Good, but jazz
Love miles Davis, but this one was kinda disappointing. Sounds like he’s just testing the waters with electric music
in the era of CDs and streaming, this is such a weird way to listen to this record. two tracks, but at 20 minutes a pop nearly. i imagined that when this is on vinyl, its a much cooler experience, knowing that an entire side of the record is dedicated to one song, allowing Miles Davis to be as free as he wants. the overall sound of this record is really beautiful, and i did enjoy it... but i don't see myself going back to it until I one day buy the vinyl. two long tracks on streaming just doesn't do it justice.
I had a good time. The opening guitar of In A Silent Way really gave me some Friday Night Lights guitar vibes. I dig it
The year was 1988. Professional skateboarded Jeff Grosso was high on shrooms, getting kicked out of his house, and had one day to turn in his video part for Speed Freaks or he would lose his sponsorship. His tripping mind decided that the best course of action was to shave off all his hair, shave off his eyebrows, draw on new ones with a sharpie, skate a halfpipe, and film the whole thing. That's exactly what he did. Was this his best video part? No. Was this his most memorable part? Yes! It saved his professional career and cemented him as an all time great. He later explained that without his eyebrows sweat was constantly getting in his eyes. The only way he made it through his session was to close his eyes and let the shrooms takeover. This album feels a lot like that. Is this Miles Davis' best album? No. Is this long one take his most memorable? Possibly. If you want to see the Grosso part (12m16s): https://youtu.be/Ydj4RBDDUOk?si=gH_WUW1n2bFSsn4Y&t=12m16s
Ehhhhhn sorry Mr. Davis, but this just isn't leaving that much of an impression on me! A lot of solid-sounding stuff, but it just blends together so, so much.
So peaceful, but seems to be thinned out a little too much.
No private session used for Spotify. Listened to this on a rainy morning, which I think helped. Not exactly my type of music, but was still enjoyable. Not silent at all, though.
Listened to 3/4 of the way, did not get enthused.
I just cant go higher. It's good, but it doesnt move me like some of his other works. ⭐⭐⭐1/2
This album feels free form... Sort of like they went into it with no plan and just sorta winged it. I guess that's the point of Jazz. I wish American Politics in 2025 weren't the same way.
I liked it. It was very nice piano music.
This is a very great sounding jazz record, and very technical on all the instruments. I liked it.
I liked this album. I was not crazy about the first track, but the second track came in clutch. It's a really laid back, jammy (drugged out?) session with a lot of noodling and you feel that a lot in the first track. The second track Was u more interesting piece that I'd like to hear again. 3.25
Coffee House music
Unlike most jazz, it wasn't painful or annoyingly discordant.
This was alright. It was a nice little background vibe of neat musical sounds, but nothing that blew my socks off. Three stars.
forgot to rate but this rocked.
Still trying to get into jazz, but this was really incredible
Definitely some of the more enjoyable jazz I've listened to. But at the end of the day it's still jazz. It's just too freeform for me to understand as an album. 6.25/10 (3.125/5)
little too boring for me but still definitely enjoyable
This is probably my most controversial Miles album. It is beautiful, intelligent, emotional, stunningly orchestrated and represented another milestone (hehe) in jazz evolution. Such an important album, just a shame that I hate most of the fusion wank which it spawned! But I don't love it the way I love Bitches Brew or Sketches Of Spain, it never quite lights a fire in me.
Not a fan of jazz so it will be unfair to review.
2 song album, which surprised me. The length of these insinuates that these are almost riffed naturally, and with that in mind makes this impressive. I enjoyed working to this music in the background, 7/10.
Jazz isn't my thing but this album had a cool vibe
This is #day263 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to my third Miles album on the list already. Like I might have said before, I kind of feel obliged to give his albums a high score, but then again, Davis is one of the few jazz musicians I can listen to. Maybe I'm biased because he's such a household name in jazz, but I do like Kind of Blue. I've also listened to Bitches Brew back in the day, mostly because it's one of the albums Radiohead supposedly took inspiration from for OK Computer, but I'm not sure that's a bad reason. I liked that one as well. As for In a Silent Way, I can even tell it's from a different Miles era, with the electric guitars and fusion influences creeping in. I'm not sure, though, I get the same amount of pleasure from it as from the others I mentioned. My new controversial artist on the list? Because honestly, I feel like giving this a 3 out of 5. And so I am. Looking forward to #day264.
Can see the musicianship and there are parts that were good, but too slow and chill for my tastes
Delightful. I did wonder in and out of active listening.
Full disclosure: not a Jazz connoisseur, which most reviewers would probably admit, as well. My grade goes against most of my voting criteria, which is to say, I might not listen to this a great deal, but I can still appreciate how complicated, intricate, funky and impressive this is.
Still not qualified to rate jazz
Easy enough to get through
Nice jazz album but probably not revisiting
Good morning background jazz
I don’t think I’m versed in jazz enough to give serious commentary, but I wasn’t necessarily blown away
a snoozer 3/5
Mid
It's a trumpet and an organ
There's no denying Miles Davis' talent, and with so many other huge names (Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Tony Thompson) along for the session, of course this is a top notch jazz album. Little surprised at the choice of album, only because he has others that are more universally well known (Bitches Brew, Kind of Blue, Birth of Cool). The only negative for me was the occasional transition between song parts felt a little abrupt. Aside from that one minor thing, a great listen.
I feel I am at a big disadvantage with Miles Davis, as the man has a massive catalog, and I have listened to so little. Also when looking at his discography, there was so much before this album. So is this considered his best work, was there better before or after? So, very hard to judge as this just sounds like a free form jazz jam session. Shhh/Peaceful is just a straight up jam, and a fun twenty minute groove. The Silent Way got me ready for some serious jams, as I kept expecting something big, but on every build up, it would just come back down. I like the mellow bookends to the song, but the editing seems choppy and feels like separate pieces instead of flowing. Again, with no other Miles Davis to compare it to, this was tough, but I can't give a legend any kind of low rating. Hoping with 1,001 albums, we will get another Miles Davis, eventually.
Very good!
Great jazz album not a casual listen for me
What an experimental album! Delightfully complex and bridging that early gap into rock and roll in a way that doesn't seem forced. Not particularly my cup of tea, but influential and deeply worth listening to.
My brain isn't still wired for Jazz...some inetresting snippits...recognised ones that are being used in modern music...so it must be great stuff for Jazz lovers!
music for people watching with your other half on a beautiful sunny day
Default jazz 3/5. Not good, not bad, just jazz.
Not a big fan of instrumental music but it suited my rainy Monday morning.
It was OK. 3/5
To my undiscerning ear, this sounds like another Miles Davis album, a little heavier on keyboards than what I would expect. But reading about the context is interesting. My buddy Walker, who is a big jazz fan/player, got me into Weather Report (something along the lines of "You're such a big Primus fan, you should check out Jaco Pastorius,") and I've listened to their album Heavy Weather a lot. Miles's band around the time of this album included the guys that would go on to co-found Weather Report. Knowing that and listening to this, I can hear it. It's like Weather Report with a trumpet.
I find myself wanting to like jazz of this type. When I dial in, its sounds so soothing, so fun to get immersed in their mastery. But I never dial in. I guess I’m just not settled enough to live in a jazz album. As background music it’s fine, but I require more of my active listening choices. That’s said, it’s clear how effortless the musicianship is here.
how does it have names like shh and peace and silent and still make my shoulders hitch up around my ears, still pretty good tho
I listened to most of this early in the morning while stretching and warming up for a run, which was a lovely way to start the day.
Fine easy listening. Meditative. Strong organs, keyboards, guitar. But kind of sounds like all jazz does, just don't know enough about the genre to know why it stands out. Would hate to be the drummer on this set, literally the same beat for 10+ minutes at a time.
Need a few more listens for it to land. What a cover though.
I toyed with the idea of marking this as not listened. I mildly liked what I heard, but almost none of it made any sort of impression unless I sat and actively listened to it. I needed a beanbag chair and big phono earphones. I assume this would be higher if I knew more about jazz and/or dedicated 45 minutes solely to listening to it, but neither of these things happened.
Not my favorite style of jazz, but certainly enjoyable enough.
mit Sicherheit fantastische Musik, aber für mich nur als Background ...
Jazz jam band. Not bad. Fine background music. Just not my overall thing. Right on the 2/3 line for me.
Fun jazz, but it made me fall asleep and I missed my bus stop
Pour du jazz c'était fort sympathique
Wasn't in the mood for it at the start, then it put me in the mood for it
Some really great moments, but I tend to drift off with some of Mile’s compositions. Then again, maybe that’s the desired effect?
It's good work. I'm just continuing to find that I oftentimes don't respond very enthusiastically to jazz.
This was a really lovely jazz album. It was a bit too much of background music and I did kinda tune it out a little over time. Great for study/working to though!
While the playing is great, it's not for me. I get that this was sort of groundbreaking in the jazz fusion world, but that's just not a genre I've ever latched onto. 3 stars.
Honestly I still don't really get this album which is kind of a problem with this whole album a day thing because some of my favorite albums I only liked after listening to countless times you never really know how long it can take for an album to click with you
Faster than I thought. Charting music perfect time frame.
Album 704 of 1001 Miles Davis - In A Silent Way (1969) Rating : 3 / 5 I do like my horns. This was a little more laid back than his other albums I've heard. Still a good listen. Certainly different for him.

3/5
Enjoyable
Interesting…good train music. Usually I find jazz terrible but this wasn’t too bad.
Good train journey music
Good, but nothing really stood out to me.
Well it's hard to say anything bad about this. It's just a pleasant jazzy listening experience
not my cup of tea but it’s ok
It's a vibe
I was surprised when I was just 2 songs on the album. Then I saw the length of each song and remembered who Miles Davis is and it made a lot more sense. I don't listen to jazz very much but this was a fun time hearing the musicians jamming out. I can see myself having this on the the background with a drink in my hand a summer evening in the future.
A nice chill listen.
Pretty cool--as with most Jazz, it mostly hits the background music for me, but from the opening I knew this was a bit different with a rock feel. Might go 3.5, but it's a solid:
Enjoyable to listen to. Jazz still mostly bounces right off me.
Nice jazz soundtrack but nothing special to me...
if you like the background sounds in jazz but not the words as much then this is the album for you. I like the instruments and sounds, I like that there is no talking but sometimes it is good to have words but with this album you don't really need words.
easy listening but background
Esses instrumentais são divinos. A primeira música trás uma perspectiva incrível em algumas partes, como se os instrumentos estivessem dialogando entre si enquanto criam uma harmonia
Trance-esque tracks with a monologuing trumpet. Put me into flow state, but not too much to write home about.
It was calm and peaceful, like a pleasant wallpaper. I enjoyed it but it quickly faded into the background
It was unlike most albums have listened to. I liked it. Listened to it at the gym, which was an interesting choice
Funky and obviously brilliant but in no rush to listen again, not my bag really
not bad
Just some pretty pleasant jazz, not much more to say.
Nice background music, but didn't capture my attention
Calming and resonates with me
Need more listens, but it was nice to hear Miles and his way of forward thinking ways. 7/10
This one was a challenging listen. It's not what I'd come to desire when expecting to hear a Miles Davis album. I'm someone who will lose themselves in 40 second beat loops I've got bookmarked on twitter working on something while the groove drives my function. There's an approach to that sonata style composition here that's novel, especially considering the modern instrumentation, that's no doubt formative of the modern media I so enjoy. It's hard to hear Davis at times. I wonder at times how much I'm actually hearing of him and not the producer, Teo Macero. It's got me wanting to revisit Bitches Brew in its entirety, I was surprised to learn he produced that as well. Perhaps contemporary critics were right, it just works better when you fully lean into the electric. Ambitious and ambient. Strange.
Oh no... The second jazz album has hit the list, and the first Miles Davis in what I assume to be a millionty billion forthcoming avant-garde jazz albums. It's going to be a bloodbath. My list of one stars will be so lengthy that I'll be left wondering what the point of even sending these albums is. What sordid, unimaginable horrors could possibly be entombed within this record... Okay, upon further research and after actually listening to this album I've discovered that it is not Miles Davis that I have a problem with, but Charles Mingus. And that Mingus only has one album in the book. And that this isn't even avant-garde jazz. And that I enjoyed this. This review is a disaster. I'm incredibly snobby when it comes to longform music, and it is for this reason that I've had a storied history of absolutely hating the shit out of jazz. It throws a complete curveball to the way that I traditionally assess music, which is to average out a score based on how long a song holds my attention, the emotions that it draws from me and the components of it that I admire or view as exceptional. I have no problem with rating ambient music on the pretense of it being something that isn't meant to hold my attention, but I can't bring myself to engage with jazz in the same way. I've always got an air of cerebral and distinguished songwriting from the way that people discuss jazz, which is completely invisible to me whenever I put on a jazz album. It all blends together, and in the case of the more experimental stuff, becomes a completely insulting cacophony of noise. It's because of this experience that I have a natural skepticism towards non-musicians that claim to fans of jazz. I can't understand how people can point to a specific song or moment on these albums that is exceptional or groundbreaking if they don't understand music theory or the way that these albums go against the proven formula. Anyways, to get back on track and to make up for the fact that I can't say anything specific about this album: Do I remember a specific moment of this album? Fuck no, but I can't remember any part of this that I explicitly disliked, either. Did I feel anything while listening to this album? Is there anything I admire about it? No, and no. Have I gone above and beyond in writing my longest review at two o'clock in the morning? I think it might be time to turn a new leaf with jazz - I feel more open to it now than I ever have previously. I'll just have to separate myself from all of the discourse.
Lovely album
This is among the hardest for me to rate — I get the skill involved in putting something like this together, but it’s not something I plan to come back to. It’s a 2 or a 3 for me.
I don't know anything about jazz but this is nice
It was good but not one I will go back to I think
1a musica melhor que a 2a.
2 songs, 38 minutes! Background music. It's ok.
I wanted to be blown away by this but mostly found it pleasant and sleepy. Track 2 got a bit too repetitive in the middle, but the end was a whole Explosions in the Sky type vibe.
el relaxation musica almost made me fall asleep honk shooooo… it’s nice to listen in the background but it’s not something i’ll come back to, sorry.
It feels a bit unfair to review this since I know nothing about jazz and I feel pretty indifferent about it. I did listen to the entire album, but this was no more than nice background music for me. 3 stars
This is one of those albums that you kind of have to be in the right mood for. It’s not a bad listen at all — smooth, spacey, and definitely doing something different from your typical jazz record. For me, Side Two was the standout. The groove settles in better, the playing feels more connected, and it just flows in a way that pulled me in more than the first half did. There’s some real beauty in how minimal and patient the whole thing is. Not something I’d throw on all the time, but a solid listen when you want something low-key and a little out there.
Good album. Too much guitar noodling. Great atmosphere. One of my all time favorite artists.
Good relaxing music. Nothing I am looking to add to collection but would put on again for sleepy relaxing vibes.
Fun jazz, what's not to like! Favorite track: In a Silent Way
Excellent musicianship, of course. Structure with no structure. I’m guessing this set the stage for great jam bands of the 70’s and beyond. But, in the end, jams are indulgent & you have to be willing and ready to go along for the ride.
Jazz i up son
Difficult to rate, there are occasionally ever so brief bits that just seem to jarr and irritate me, but on balance I think I came away from this rather liking it
Tricky to judge this, did I like it? In places, yes. Would I listen again? Probably not.
It was fine
Great album!
For as short of an album as this was, I did enjoy it a lot
Skibidi toilet before skibidi toilet. Elevator music from before elevators. Modern art before modern times. Yeah, I'd listen again.
Very much not my type of music but I quite enjoyed it nonetheless.
You can tell this album is the direct precurser to the magnum opus that is Bitches Brew. Unfortunately this one is much more regimented and feels like he is still grasping onto the form of Jazz albeit with loose hands. I may have to listen to it again and again and again like Bitches Brew to finally grasp its power, but as of now I see it as the demo tapes for whats to come of the Davis Fusion era. In a Silent Way stands out over Shhh Peaceful and combines some super cool slowed down dreamy moments 6/10
I liked this album. I'm normally not in the mood to listen to jazz, but this was a solid listen. 2 songs = 38 minutes lolol. The jams were fun and of course...Miles Davis is a legend. Actual rating is a 3.5 Liked Songs: I liked em both!
Long Album
Didn't hate it but its a one and done.
Aika paljon toistoa
Not a fan of jazz but it does help me sleep. 3 stars or C.
I’m not usually one to put on a jazz album but something very soothing and soulful about this def kept me engaged . I’m not sure where it will fall within my rotation but def glad to have heard it
Its hard for me to discern Jazz albums like this. I enjoy them but have trouble comparing them, this one from 1969 is ranked as one of his best. Foundational in the ambient genre. Totally smooth and perfect for my night shift
not a big fan of jazz itself, but this was pleasing.
Not bad. Like the experimental, plugged in version of Miles
Maybe a bit too peaceful sometimes. It's nice though.
Sweet and chill
If peeing your pants is cool, call me Miles Davis
Enjoyable
Again, I just don't get it. It's fine. Nice to play in the background.
I do enjoy jazz but some of this album is just very slow, almost too ethereal for me to stay with.
improv jazz, meh
A really good album by a jazz great. Not jaw dropping or iconic, but good nonetheless. 3.3/5 -> 3/5
Meh. It's fine background music.
Did not hate it, did not love it either. Some parts are good, first minutes of the second track are really good. Not gonna give it a bad score just because I don't understand, neither do I care about, jazz.
I can respect Davis's artistry in this album, but it's not really my cup of tea.
this was good, just really long 2 songs
interesting moments
Not that I’m qualified in general, but I feel like it’s damn near impossible to actually talk about this album and break it down unless you have any actual experience in improv fusion jazz. Two tracks long, 40 minutes in length, and just some of the most chill instrumental work that you can sit and relax to. It’s moody, it’s smoky, it’s delivered in a simple manner, yet it’s delicately complex in its construction and production. I actually really enjoyed it, even if it’s not the flavour of jazz I would typically seek out. But I also think it should get bonus points for really kicking off an unforgettable period of the genre and being a pretty important release in how influential it was in the years and decades that followed; and I can certainly hear how it influenced a number of albums I happen to love. Maybe I have some writers block today. Maybe my knowledge of jazz needs some work. Or maybe this is just an album that needs to be listened to, rather than it being recommended by mere words. But it’s certainly an LP that has me stumped for words. If you like contemporary fusion jazz, and/or like to experience a bit of important music history - this is totally up your street. An appreciative 3/5.
It's jazz. It's nice, smooth, but not more than 3 stars.
Interesting listen. Has a definite vibe. Requires more listening
Appreciate the artist. Not for me.
mr davis kinda disappointed me on this one, still good though
Some good background vibes
This is definitely a good album, but it's more subtle and ambient in nature than exciting, and, therefore, for me, it also is less memorable. However, I did like it. I just don't think it really wowed me in any way.
After listening to In A Silent Way, it is a pretty decent jazz album and a pretty decent step above the last Miles Davis album i looked at. This one, like i already said, seems to take a different approach from Birth Of The Cool (The previous Miles Davis album i did). While that previous album had a bunch of different songs which sounded generally similar to each other, this one had two songs split up into 3 sections each with the third one being a continuation of the first. I do like this style more since it allows the songs to be stand out much more from each other and the songs in general feel pretty darn relaxing. This album isn't exactly anything amazing but its still a pretty solid effort. Best Song: In A Silent Way / It's About That Time Worst Song: Shhh / Peaceful (Side note: Honestly, i don't even know why i'm picking a best and worst song for this album since there is just two songs but i guess i can just say i liked the second song more than the first one)
Vibes men lååång
It’s jazz. It sounded good but nothing really notable except it’s two long songs on a single album. What am I missing?
Quite lovely, though two incredibly long songs is pushing it for being called an album.
It's weird that today this sounds quite generic to my ear. Perhaps I'm not in the right head space?
Like going to a fancy art exhibition consisting of only two huge pieces by this one famous dude. While I have to admit that I don't really get it on an artistic level, I respect the effort and appreciate the craftsmanship. I also like how it makes me feel super sophisticated. About 40 minutes is also the perfect amount of time to spend on it until you've had enough and want to sneak off in a silent way. 3.5/5
In A Silent Way, this album was Peaceful. Shhhh
Aight
An album full of tension, but it gets released in the end in a satisfying way
Good
I kind of like Shh/Peaceful
It's okay for mood music. Not something I would normally listen to.
This had some cool sounds, the trumpet is great, and I like how it’s mixed, but jazz continues to bore me. And because of the electronic influence, it almost feels like a more boring form of jazz.
Shhh/Peaceful - 6.5/10 I feel like I'm in an 80's detective movie rn and its the intro and I'm getting ready to start my day as New York City's greatest detective and running down the stairs of my apartment with toast in my mouth and a cup of coffee in my hand. the jazz is me sitting in court. um, so this is long. Love the song but my attention span could not. Maybe if I were to use it as background noise it would work. I'm only 12 minutes in so I'm gonna skip to the next one. In a Silent Way - 7/10 I like this one a little bit more. I think I can see myself listening to this but as background noise. Only because it's a little calmer. I do feel like a little bohemian/70's princess listening to this. Oh nvm, we're on the move now. Now I'm not in the forest anymore but in the city again. TIME TO WAKE UP AND GO BACK TO WORK! 6 minutes in and seems like I'm staying up late to do overtime at my detective job. now the sun is rising. I PULLED AN ALL NIGHTER! 13 minutes in and now I'm on the run! for donuts? bagels? a crime? oh, now we rest up... I guess I solved the crime or something because now I'm getting tired. Overall Rating: 6.75/10
Because I had built up a little bit of a backlog I listened to this immediately after Kind Of Blue. It is not bad, but it just doesn't quite compare. Two nearly 20 minute songs are kinda rough.
Atmospheric. Two very long songs that somehow didn't become dull. We liked it.
Someday, jazz will reveal its whole beauty to me.
Some of the best jazz that I’ve listened to but I’m still not a huge fan of the genre.
4/10
- super entspannte Tracks
***An ok album
Jazz is not My style.
Frankly i did enjoy it but i'm by no means a conoisseur and at time it felt... lacking? 3.5/5
Now, jazz is a genre that does my cock in. I just don’t get it. However, this was pleasant enough to listen to to be fair. Not as jarringly awful as a lot of other jazz stuff.
Short album, but interesring
It was good musically, bit it was a bit meandering and repetitive. Start of side 2 was by far the best part
Don’t give this enough time for a proper review
I was so confused on why there were only two songs, until I found out the duration of each song. Overall, it'd make for some pretty chill studying music.
Io e il jazz non ci mescoliamo
There were some really good bits here, the sax blending seamlessly with the percussion to create an air of relaxation and harmony. However the amount of ambient lift music on here could have taken me to the top of the shard and back down
Album was certainly full of talent, but 2 20min jazz songs are a big step up in effort for beginners, which hurts the ratings I believe. 3.5/5 but not sure I would seek this out again
Not my favorite album buy enjoyable
Cool jazz
Wow an album with only 2 songs.
Pleasant as a stream Flowing without boundaries Lost in the current
Nice background music
Miles Davis is always an excellent choice. I didn´t know about this album in particular but I enjoyed it. It has only two songs and the record lasts 23 minutes. I guess it was a one-song per side record. Cool!
Important historically because it marks the first foray into this style for Miles Davis. A good listen, but IMO, his earlier, more traditional work is more classic, and his later work in this style is better. This sits in a weird position in the middle.
Technically it's really good, but it just didn't connect with me.
I don’t normally like jazz or music like this. But I really enjoyed this, especially the second song, In a Silent Way.
Obviously well made but it just doesn't do much for me. Not my style of jazz. 3.5
Solid. Thinking about what is was like to be Miles Davis. Putting out such forward thinking music in such a time of change.
frisch und soft
in a silent way foi o que deu uma salvada pra mim, apesar de gostar de jazz a primeira metade não conversou tanto comigo
Enjoyable
Never listened to it. Enjoyed it but I might not be qualified to appreciate it.
Interesting. I don't think that I'll ever listen to it again and not sure that it makes my 1001 albums to hear before you die, but now I have.
I'm ambivalent towards the music. Striking photo on the album cover though.
Nice easy listening. Don't recall ever seeing an album with only two songs before.
Correcto
Beautiful but doesn't really go anywhere and is essentially just a collection of nice sounds 3.5/5
Decidedly average. 3/5
Very smooth!
Nice. Preferred side 1.
6.5/10
Too abstract for me. Second side better than the first
Jazzy. I like it. Very mellow.
It was good. I liked it as a piece of music history, but as something to listen to for my own enjoyment, it was just alright.
Nice easy listening. Don't recall ever seeing an album with only two songs before.
Never listened to it. Enjoyed it but I might not be qualified to appreciate it.
Interesting and experimental.
Of all the 1001 albums for this thing to have started on, this is one of them. Interesting, but far from a strong start. I wonder if this site lets you go back and redo ratings. But in any case, jazz is kinda neat.
Pleasant enough.
Jazz is a whole art in itself and one that I don't completely understand (yet). Part of it will be my high-frequency hearing loss I've had my entire life, which I suspect prevents me from getting the full experience as Mr. Davis intended. I rather enjoyed this and will rate it 4 stars because it is smooth.
Not what I expected - very enjoyable. Jazzy and laidback.
You don’t hate jazz, you fear its lack of boundaries
Preferisco gli altri
Why not split these tracks up? It wasn't bad though, just a little strange.
two 20min songs may be the perfect sized bite of jazz for me. my workday was slightly more enjoyable as i morphed into a noir detective for a bit at my office desk. any further analysis would be me talking out of my ass.
Not my favourite Miles Davis but still a decent listen. I preferred the last few minutes.
I’m not super into Miles’ fusion era, but after a string of electronica this was a welcome respite. Feels more like a mellow rock album with the occasional Miles solo thrown in.
this album had the misfortune of being featured during a week that had a lot of instrumental music. miles davis is clearly talented, but this dragged for me. i'm ready for some words.
i think i don't really care for jazz because I feel dumb listening to it. i have a damn music degree and still don't "get" this. miles is a great musician but his output just doesn't do anything for me here. i don't hate it or anything, but I can't rate it anything above "fine" for me personally. the near-20-minute tracks don't help with accessibility either. favorites: in a silent way
Not for me at all But clearly pretty good
A very pleasant sounding record. That said I forgot I heard it. Talent, legacy blah blah blah.
Хороший джазец. на виниле - да, а вот так чисто слушать заебет
It’s very hard to separate the fact that this is considered an absolute classic and I knew this as I listened to it. If I came to this and didn’t know it was Miles Davis it might well have passed me by. Much prefer side 2 as it’s the more obvious precursor to the later music I prefer, Bitches, Jack Johnson and On the Corner.
I have the same reaction every time we get something like this and I just think that it's fine but im not that into it even tho clearly he's really talented
I say this every time we get a jazz album lol… jazz isn’t my main thing but I usually enjoy it when we get it. Ngl In a Silent Way dragged on though. 6.5/10
6/10 - Decent Jazz but I was kind of locked out and did not pay too much attention.
Some nice slow jazz. I like it, but it’s hard to sit through a full album of instrumental songs that flow into each other. Sounds like one 45 minute song. Got pretty good in the last 10 minutes or so. This is a vibe album to put on in the background.
Very chill music, but I’m not going out of my way for this. 2.5
Good stuff, but can’t see myself listening to it again (except as background music)
Putting it on for nap times
I guess this was a breakthrough album. I could take it or leave it. I probably would need to really listen more attentively to "get" this one. Still mad respect for Miles. He was a musical genius.
Second half was better than the first. It's a 2.5, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt because I'm probably just too stupid to understand jazz.
Surprised to see it was almost 40 minutes long but only 2 songs. Jazz man! Great cooking dinner album
Not a kind of blue.
Tosi erilaista jazzia. Aika jopa ambienttia eka kappale, toinen menevämpi. Paitsi loppu taas ambient. Aika erikoiata. Paras: Shhh / Peaceful
Cool music. Cool cover.
Jazz has never been my thing and, sadly, this did not miraculously change that for me. It certainly wasn’t unpleasant but neither could I find the joy.
It’s good - not the best from Mr Davis - a bit all over the place in parts but he was an exceptional player.
A 2 track jazz fusion jam session - oh god what will I need to endure!! First listen I was a bit bemused at what I was listening to. Second listen I found some moments that I quite enjoyed. Third listen I realised it needed to be approached like an aphex twin ambient album - let yourself just be taken where the band leads you. I’m not a jazz convert yet but it’s not the painful experience I’d anticipated. A decent 3 that may one day become a 4 if I go back to it in future times.
I’m a pretty bad judge of the quality of jazz music. This album is technically very strong. Innovative as well. But ultimately I didn’t connect with it. I think I listened to it at least 5 times and just couldn’t get there. I know this is highly regarded, but I’m a sucker for melody and this basically had none. No disrespect Miles Davis, I’ll come back and try again another time.
I tried to listen to this album so many times in order to start catching up on this generator and I have finally made it through. Clearly I lied on the last review since it took me months to get it done tehe. It was a great way to pass time while I did nothing at work, since I have genuinely started running out of music to listen to because I listen to my playlist all throughout the 4 hours of commuting I do, plus almost the entire day at work, and I am starting to get sick of it real fast. It took me a little while to get into this album, especially since I am not the biggest jazz fan or listener, but it was chill to contemplate life and fall asleep on the train to. I feel that for jazz, I usually have to be in a certain headspace and I am simply not currently at peace enough to fully enjoy, but if I revisit it somewhere in the future I am certain it will be better than my current rating of 3. Kinda difficult to choose favourites on an album with 2 tracks, but I will say I think I enjoyed the second track, In a Silent Way, a little more
Another two song album but 39 minutes this time. Went back to back with Deep Purple and liked Deep Purple more. Definitely talent here but enjoyed more of a loud experience if listening to an 18 minute song.
I'm not a Jazz efficianado by any means, but I know Miles Davis is a legend. Sounds were nice and relaxing, but I wasn't present & in the moment listening. I found myself drifting off, maybe that's what jazz is supposed to do?
This album was hard to get into. The vibe is hard to identify, I prefer more fluidity. The reprise was very nice, but I probably won’t listen to this one again.
Þetta átti ekki alveg við í dag. En þetta er eflaust mjög flott stöff. Finnst ég bara ekki hæfur til að meta það.
Great background music but that’s as far as me and jazz/improv go.
Nice and easy to listen to
This is fine for background/hyperfocus music. Still not the biggest fan of Jazz, but I didn’t hate it.
Nice, easy to get lost in. I like the guitar.
Great composition, lively and a staple for the genre. Too old-fashioned and lounge/elevator music sounding for me to particularly enjoy it.
its good
Jazz fusion, modal jazz. I'm pretty split on this album, if you can really call it that. On one hand, it was very relaxing an atmospheric. On the other hand, I was honestly kinda bored. Maybe I just don't always understand jazz the way some people do or pretend to do. Like I can hear it and say, yes this is very good I like this. But also realize that wow, I was kinda bored. Like watching a symphony that's objectively well put together but being bored by the actual music they're playing. I don't know, I did enjoy the improv aspect of this album, it felt really natural and slightly psychedelic. But it doesn't feel like anything more than really really good ambient background music? Like it's hard to be an active listener of it. I understand that historically this is an important jazz record, but I just wasn't grooving with it man. Probably won't revisit. 3/5
Good music can take you on a journey. This just walks round the same block over and over.
Was good background music whilst studying. Didn't notice the album ending and carried on listening to a random selection of similar music. All good stuff in the background.
Progressive jazz, enjoyable but doesn’t pop
2 songs. Shy of 40 minutes. Normally I like this type of music in a live sense... But I was thoroughly engaged with this album Even when I was doing something and had it more in the background, but I found my attention focusing on this record more than previous records like this. Good listen.
Effectively reduced cortisol levels at the office 👍
Hey Miles I think you accidentally recorded the band tuning their instruments for 40 minutes
Interesting, very easy listening.
Okay background music, bit aimless
Like it more than than Bitches Brew, but not enough to give it a 4.
20 minute tracks 😔 3/5
It didn't blow me away but it wasn't bad either.
Smooth
Jazzy. Ok I guess I don't know, jazz all sounds the same to me
Oke lastig. Best vet en revolutionair wat betreft de R&B invloeden. Maar ook wel echt saaie geïmproviseerde jazz. Ik ga voor 3 sterren
Good listen. Liked second track a lot more. Don't know what else to say.
I didn’t hate it, despite it being jazz. I wish they’d all play their instruments in a way that made sense to me though. Miles Davis did some lovely trumpeting.
Not bad for a jazz album
I hear the unique brilliance of Miles Davis and this makes fairly pleasant back ground music, but Jazz is generally not for me. Maybe it's this album in particular, but I find that the sound for me a is too abstract.
Only 2 songs what is this a Godspeed you black Emperor album?
Interesting, definitely not my style. Not repetitive, and goes in unexpected ways but still peaceful and not too crazy. 2 very long tracks only.
Tried so hard for this not to be background music to me. Mostly unsuccesfully. The bowed bass and guitar parts are cool. The rest of it is obviously very good, and of course with a quiet hinting title probably not trying to go too hard. Still after the Koln concerts I had been hoping to find the same pleasure in music I could get from that among the other jazz greats, and just couldn't on this one. Surely a me problem.
