Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Hadn't realised the second half was all instrumental. I dig it. I think I'd enjoy whatever imaginary film it's a soundtrack to. Also, Sound and Vision is one of my favourites and worth big points on its own. FOUR STARS.
Bowie and Eno, why am I not surprised. Good album, has its legacy in ambience and electronic, but not as big an album as Station to Station.
not bowie’s best album but really strong and likeable
This is a record that I've heard many times. I think I might own it. But it's never top on the list of Bowie records that I reach for. The sounds are interesting, but in some ways they all feel like short ideas for things that could have become more fully-fledged songs. Because there isn't a lot of change happening in the songs, I'm thankful they are short. I prefer the record before this "Station to Station" and the record after "Heroes." Since this is the first of the Berlin trilogy, I think it gets lumped in with better records. But I guess in the context of the time its pretty remarkable. Highlights: The lead guitar and quirky synths in "Breaking Glass;" The lightheartedness of "Sound and Vision;" The obvious influence of the intro of "A New Career in a New Town" on Radiohead's Kid A (which has to be on this list somewhere, right?); I love how cinematic "Warszawa" is.
A great Bowie era
Decent enough. Quite moody for bowie
Slow jam Instrumental
There might be a reason this isn’t one of the Bowie “canon” albums, but I like it. It’s very different, with electronic instrumental tracks. I think listening to it offers a new perspective on Bowie and a different sort of experience. I approve. Favourite track: “Subterraneans”
Didn't specify 3.5s and 4.5s before now. Previous 3.5s - Sheer Heart Attack, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, The Cars, Dire Straits Previous 4.5s - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
Good opening track. Wish that Sound and Visions didn't have that hissing noise. The later Eno experimental tracks are interesting, weird but drag on with repeat listens.
Not too catchy but really good as background music, more instrumental than other Bowie albums I've heard
🎸🎙🤵
well, there it is, the good bowie album. only ever listened to him as a greatest hits kind of artist. i bet germay was shit in the 80s and that is what this album nicely conveys.
Had only heard Sound and Vision before, which is a favorite. The whole album has a really nice range from the pop-flavored to the somewhat experimental, with a lot of influence from German synth bands of the 70s. A fun evening listen.
Always love Sound and Vision. The other songs on the album take a little more work to get into, but I do like it. Also it's like half-instrumental.
A triumph of sound and vision
Minimal lyrics, bit Pink Floyd sounding. A new career in a new town added it my liked songs The harmonica part sounds like a tune from Black Star album
Haven't heard this Bowie before. Very different.
A very layered and diverse album with sounds that are very moving and instrumental
Bastantes canciones instrumentales.
Interesante. Mucho mejor de lo que esperaba
bueno
I've not listened to the Berlin trilogy before. I liked this record. Very Blade Runner-y.
Moet je drie keer luisteren
This is really interesting, especially side 2. Giving it 4 stars.
I hadn't heard this album before
No two songs sound alike. lots of variation throughout this album.
So surprisingly upbeat and felt like a complete album. Hardly a stinker on it. Groovin and then reflect on the groovin'. Don't think I had the patience for the end though.
Cool album. Very blade runner esque (pre BR) lot of ambient sounds. Mostly instrumental but I dug it.
Just as odd as you would expect a Bowie album to be. Very space/ambience feel. I like it, but would have to be in the mood for it going forward
Vibey, no words really so we just chillin. Good to listen to while emailing but also could see potential of laying on ur bed high/sober and just contemplating an shit
A couple cool songs. I get this might have been really influential at the time, but idk. Can’t see myself listening to it a ton over the next few years. Some of the ambient stuff is kinda cool, but not like a great tangerine dream album or anything like that.
Lovely, as always.
Enjoyed this a lot more than I remember.
Literally could be a 5 on another day and i'll probably regret giving this a 4, the transition between side a and b is a little jarring still but both are awesome.
My first full album by Bowie was not a disappointment. More artsy than expected. Pretty good.
Psycho
Was well on its way to at least 4 stars but there are far too many instrumentals. They should be a whole separate project.
Low feels dated because its structure feels dated, not because its sounds are old. The record cuts itself in two. I understand the idea, and I don’t think the second half is worthless. I just don’t love divided albums. An album should feel like one piece. A paragraph can turn, but it still has to stay with itself. The first half does that. It sounds like rock being pushed forward without losing its body. The songs are sharp and strange. The backing tracks have depth. The drones give them motion instead of just mood. Then the album changes shape. The second half has dread and distance, and I can hear what it is reaching for. But it moves me less than it interests me. It feels like an early sketch of ambient as a full language. Eno would make that argument better on Music for Airports. Here, the idea is there, but it still feels unfinished. That is where Low loses me. The first half still feels alive. The second half feels important, but more tied to its moment. I respect it more than I want to return to it. Bowie’s vocals add personality, but they also push against the texture sometimes. They can feel scattered, like he is pulling the song toward himself instead of sinking into it. I don’t think modern vocals have less character. Geese makes the opposite case. The voices are strange and specific, but they still belong to the songs. So Low is interesting, especially song by song. As an album, it feels uneven. The second half matters. It just does not make the record feel whole.
I’ve never heard a single song from this record until now. Much more punk rock influenced or sounding than any Bowie I’ve heard before. Very solid 70s rock album so far. Be my wife is the standout track. I love the combo of rock and roll and alien synth rock sounds. I feel like this album influenced my own style of playing without even having heard it.
First half of the album was pretty nice, but the second half...
Some nice instrumentals and catchy beats
Has some vibey bits sprinkled throughout, however, nothing too special jumped out from this album so best I can do is a 3.
Back to a more guitar led rock here for Bowie. It's all fine, but this is my 4th Bowie album in a month and I'm tiring. Be My Wife has those big bass piano lines, like a pub singalong. A couple of instrumentals too, which is interesting. Warszawa - a long ambient-ish, film-score like piece here. Why? I have no idea.. Okay, so side 2 is entirely instrumental, change is signalled by A New Career in Town. Why? I still have no idea Weeping Wall has fun marimba/xylo with heavy FX synth/guitar on top. Best track - Speed of Life, Be My Wife, A New Career in Town, Weeping Wall 3 stars - an album of two halves, but neither gelled with me.
3.5 It’s good! I don’t hate it or anything, and I get why it’s important! But is it wrong to say I prefer my Bowie a little more rocking? There’s great soundscapes on here! But I missed Bowie’s lyrics and choruses!!! Sue me!
I can appreciate that this is a critically “good” album but omg it’s not my style. I can see the influence of Bowie on artists I love—Pulp (Party Hard) and Belle and Sebastian (Stay Loose) but I can’t connect to his vocals. I did like “Speed of life” and “Sound and Vision”—both tracks that are worth returning to especially on a drive .
never listened to a full david bowie album before. heard a few songs. i love his song "chubby little loser". opening instrumental track is cool. track 2 has a good groove to it, only a short one though. track 3 isn't for me. it's kinda...... goofy lol track 4 immediately sounds way better. OHHH I LOVE WHEN SYNTHS DO THAT! cascading airy synths are the easiest way to hook me in, seriously. nah this song is great. to think this came out in the 70s is crazy - it reminds me so much of the summery bedroom pop/indie pop i was listening to a lot of a few years ago. artists like gus dapperton, still woozy, boy pablo and so on. really good song. track 5 is really solid too. great stuff. a bit moodier but not oppressively so, still fun to listen to and sonically rich. track 6 'be my wife' isn't bad, maybe a little repetitive. okay nvm, the whole last minute of the song is a huge fantastic guitar solo. gg bowie track 7 wtf? what a gorgeous opening. rest of the song is just... okay to me. the harmonica is actually kind of annoying, and i'm not a harmonica hater or anything like that. it's very repetitive though. warszawa is excellent. very blade runner. art decade is cool. this album has really mellowed out now i feel. interesting how this has virtually become an instrumental album now. i bet this was a hell of a listening experience in the 70s lol. final track, subterraneans, is just a solid ambient kind of thing. this album is cool. really really forward-thinking. kind of shocking that this was released in 1977... but it does sort of feel like the 1st half is one album, and the 2nd half is another entirely. i think it would benefit from a bit more cohesion. the harmonica on track 7 was annoying, and that 3rd track being a bit too goofy and jaunty brings it down for me too. project is a great length, concise without being too short. lots of really good ideas. 3.3/5
Another case of a lot of albums from one artist. It's good but there are so many other albums that missed out for Bowie to have 5+ albums here Fave track: Sound and Vision
It was okay
yeah he sounds real low
Very good album. Top songs are “Sound and Vision” and the mostly instrumental atmospheric “Subterraneans”.
It isn't great, it isn't terrible, but I'm still not sure where on the spectrum I'd put it.
ahead of its time. great guitar. love sound and vision
Listen out of order since Spotify licensing shenanigans
Bra! Och med det menar jag första halvan av albumet, andra hälften: not so much. Be my wife, Sound and vision och Speed of Life var bäst! Andra hälften blev flummig, instrumentell och utdragen. Något jag inte gillade.
This is a very experimental collaboration with Brian Eno. There are too many instrumentals for my taste, but it’s still interesting background music and “Sound and Vision” remains a banger
Different then i expected
chill
I really enjoyed the soundscapes & instrumentals on this album.
Kind of strange album with pop / rock and ambient style songs. But it is David Bowie, what could go wrong...
Ww- more weird synth shit!! Ook weer goofy en experimenteel, crazy shit. Wel leuk! Lief? Subterraneans - jaaa dit is echt top. Weird scifi ambient, gave vocals, top productie.
I enjoyed this one. Just a gold solid album
Yeah not bad, not crazy for it
*1977 *A little spacey and ethereal, but nothing crazy, and a very easy listen. *Several nice instrumental songs. *Nothing exciting here, but I liked the whole album just fine. RATING - 7/10
Amazing sounds and textures on the instrumental tracks. A couple of recognizable David Bowie vocal cuts..and yeah I can see why folks were divided at the time of release. If this is what writer's block/kicking addiction sounds like..it is a great record. It isn't one I'd return to often, but a must hear in the Big Bowie Picture.
Definitely not what I was expecting, but then again, can you ever predict what a Bowie album is going to sound like if you have never heard it before? I'm not going to keep this in my library, but I can definitely appreciate.
Not Bowie's best album
I kinda like weird, post cocaine Bowie
This is a really peculiar album in Bowie’s discography, and my relationship with it is equally strange. I will start off by saying that one of my all-time favorite Bowie songs is from here. It's "Warszawa". The word "elegia" comes to my mind when I think about it. It's powerful. At the same time the album is uneven. I think it tries a lot of things and that's a good thing. It's ambitious but it's also uneven. I like this part of Bowie. It feels like a much more intimate album. It is the one where there are not theatrics, it's just an artistic self-expression and evaluation. The unevenness comes from the experimentation. It is ambient and grounded. I think that the second part is better that the first one. This album explores a lot of sounds. Some of them would be seminal in the development of various genres. I will need to listen to the whole thing in its entirety a few more times. There's something about this album. I adore "Warszawa" and:"Subterraneans".
It's alright, none of the hits just some experimenting
Very instrumental, some of the tracks sound like a movie soundtrack. The final track subterraneans sounds very cinematic
The start was really good, but the second half is a very specific mood which I’m excited to listen to a certain sentence but doesn’t keep up for me in general daily place and replability
3 because it has *Sound and Vision* Seriously, although I love Bowie's music and I have the upmost respect for him and his career, this album shouldn't be here, IMHO. With the exception of that known theme, all the other songs felt a little bit on the boring side, a little bit depressing and on the low end, you know? Maybe that's the purpose of Low, I don't know, I didn't investigate nor did I read the reviews prior to listen to it and write my own :-(
Did not enjoy this as much as I expected to.
Probably need to listen again
It was unique. Neither liked it nor disliked it. It had many sounds layering on each other. Sound and vision was probably the best one on the album. Would be great for reading novels.
David Bowie is an odd one. I liked this better my first listen, but on the second while there were a few standouts it seems very steady and consistent. Nothing I dislike about the album at all, but it doesn’t give me a whole lot of reasons to listen again. The back half of the album does almost remind me of the back half of Abbey Road in the sense that it is very different and not full “songs” so to speak. They don’t blend together but they are discrete instrumental pieces. That’s interesting but again not super compelling.
nice album
This is the third Bowie album I've gotten in two weeks. Bowie fatigue is real. Still like Ziggy better.
Sound was greatly made. Lots of tracks had incredible beats and sounds. They can be used in cinematic products. However, vocals were not the best in this album. I preferred tracks without vocals in this album.
I think would enjoy more with more dedicated listens - the second half is ominous
overall rating: 6/10! very funky very different very groovy! the second half isn't my sorta vibe but the first half definitely is! i rate it a 6 only bc literally half the songs are instrumentals and i love songs with words so... sorry but not sorry david i love ya!
Perfekt att plugga till. Mycket instrumentellt, inte alls fokus på texterna. Väldigt cohesive, känns som ett riktigt album! Let him cook (literally), favoriten var Sound And Vision.
The worst David Bowie record I’ve ever heard. It’s still… pretty good, but pretty good is real step down.
I'm having a bit of a crisis as I go through all of the David Bowie albums on here. I have small periods of time where a David Bowie song will really resonate with me. I really want to like this more than I do. There's definitely something interesting in here that is in the same vein as Iggy Pop's 'The Idiot'. The opening track comes the closest but I just feel like it wasn't fully realized.
I never know how to rate instrumental albums as I never come back to actually listen to them. With this one being half instrumental I guess I would give it a 6/10
This is the most Brian Eno thing I've heard that wasn't actually made by Brian Eno
Some strong standouts, particularly in the middle stretch. A fascinating experiment, and if half such attempts produced something as half as brilliant as Sound of Vision, I would gladly listen to a 1000 more.
David Bowie is certainly one of the great ones in the history of rock and pop. I like some of his songs. But generally I'm no big fan.
Album 272/1089 and already my 6th Bowie. It's becoming clear to me that the author of this list is a big fan of Bowie and Bowie-inspired artists/groups. On first listen, this was not a winner for me, changing from short bursts of song in the first half to dark instrumentals in the second half. The second time around, however, it began to resonate, especially after I read about some of the background (addiction recovery, the Berlin trilogy). It took on a new life for me at that point, as something to absorb rather than pick apart. That said, it's not something I would come back to, although Warszawa is great for remembering Cold War vibes.
He throw some nice pop into the experimental ambient album Highlights: "Sound and Vision", "A New Career in a New Town"
It started good but got bored after a few songs.
good but i didn’t like that there was no lyrics
Really enjoyed the first half of the album but the second half of the album lost me, I'll give this a 3/5
Sir David have some betters albums in his catalogue, but its still David 7/10 Will I add this album to my library? no
I had to go back to see just how many Bowie records I have reviewed thus far... this will be the seventh. Look, I am a Bowie fan but are we doing his entire discography? I doubt it as his later discography is often dismissed which is a shame. As a complete album I happen to think 1. Outside (The Nathan Adler Diaries: A Hyper Cycle) is better than this. All of that being said there is a very repetitive theme in all of my reviews of the Bowie albums suggested thus far, I might as well copy and paste one of them.... "I LOVE David Bowie. That doesn't mean I'm not honest with myself when it comes to his albums. Just like most of his catalogue there are 1 or 2 GREAT songs on here and a couple of fantastic sections in other songs that are otherwise good to poor. Very uneven throughout. The great vastly outweighs the bad though because when Bowie is on he's genius." 3 stars.
I do love some Bowie. Don't own this one yet. The influence of Eno is real clear in the second half of this record. Nothing wrong with it.
Good songs, good jazzz but wouldn’t listen again
Pretty chill, I can dig it. Some clever use of synth and stuff
If I did drugs, this would go super crazy
pretty unremarkable in my opinion. i didn’t hate it and even added “a new career in town” to a playlist, but overall this was nothing to write home about. i don’t really get the hype around bowie tbh.
Strange little record. Pretty neat, cool soundscapes, very ambient on the B-side (Brian Eno is a persuasive man). Bowie has a lot of different sounds in his head and that's cool. Not sure how much there really is to come back to, but not bad by any means.
I'm a huge Bowie fan, but this statement comes with an asterisk that I suspect many Bowie fans have in their (not so) secret hearts. That is, that Bowie's fearless tendency to take risks and constantly reinvent himself is a double-edged sword. He is an artist in the truest sense of the word. I suspect I am more of a minority when it comes to which Bowie albums I'm not a huge fan of, amd which I gravitate towards. I've always been ambivalent towards his so-called Berlin trilogy of which this was the first, and sort of dismissed them. Upon relisten to "Low" with mature-er ears I sort of agree with my initial reaction, but for different reasons. I remember intensely disliking side B, for instance. Isn't it basically just an Eno record at this point? But now side B is my favorite part. Many of the songs on Side A seem...half-baked? I put the question mark there as a sort of flinch, anticipating the waves of psychic hate rippling from all ends of the earth towards me. "Sound and Vision" is great, but feels underwritten to this know-nothing listener. Anyway, not the worst thing I could be listening to. So a 3 it is.
Jaahas, taas yksi Bowie levy. Suurin osa kappaleista instrumentaalisia, se varmaan ainakin eroaa muista Bowien levyistä. Kappaleissa ihan jännä tunnelma, varsinki Warszawa kappale. Sound and Vision oli sitten taas tosi erilainen, letkeä kesäkappale. Parhaat: Sound and Vision, A New Career In New Town, Warszawa
Big Bowie fan but this one didn’t fully land for me. A couple of highlights though. Sound and Vision is great, love the swinging style of it backed by a funky bass line. Subterraneans is the other standout, that mellow sax with the atmospheric synth underneath creates something really ethereal. Other than that it sits pretty far down my list of favourite Bowie records.
It was so ambivalent, sometimes generic off the road nonsense and then masterpiece like the last track. The ending is abrupt anyway. What is this?
I love the instrumentals. It feels like he's bored a lot of the times.
Loved this. Need to listen again.
I like the way Bowie moves his music on in the first side but goes a bit far for me on the second. I’d rather hear his lyrics and voice.
Ashamed to say this is the first time I've listened to this. But that at least gives me a clean slate for the review. And honestly, I want to give it a 4 for the innovation and especially the guitar work. But some of that innovation, especially in the last few tracks, drifts a bit too far into ambient. With which I have an ambiguous relationship at best. So the jury's out really. And that's a somewhat heretical 3*
Love side A, but side B isn't for me.
Not my fav
I liked it. Would like to hear it on vinyl. I listened to the remastered version on Spotify and it seems like the dynamics got reduced.
Listened a couple of times and the songs grew in me. Less bothered about the ambient tracks, may well have been ground breaking at the time but found them a bit dull.
I really enjoy DB overall but I will admit this wasn’t a fav of mine.
Warszawa - ciekawy utwór Tak to mi nie siedzi
Not his genre
It got better as the album progresses. The first half was personally just not my taste.
Cool! but not my fav of Bowie
First Listen; 3.5; Herky jerky and nervous, the first half of this album has an angular new wave sound that is fun. The second half is ambient, instrumental tracks. These are interesting, and while I enjoyed them well enough, there's just something about them that doesn't put it into the "great" category for me. I really enjoyed the first half of this album, and thought the second half was interesting. Favorite Track: Breaking Glass
Unexpected instrumentals featuring synth pads and some vocals. Other tracks groove but also feature synth textures maybe experimental at the time. Enjoyed the album. Favorite tracks: Subterraneans, Warszawa, Art Decade
Ok, another Bowie album! Speed of life was a nice opening instrumental track! Breaking Glass and What in the World were good opening tracks for this album. Sound and vision seemed slightly out of place as it was another mostly instrumental. I didn’t love Bowies vocals on this one. Be my wife was a banger and the vibes of a new career in a new town were immaculate. Warszawa had a really cool tone to it. Art Decade was another cool instrumental track. The last two tracks fit well within the vibe. I expected more vocals but I was not disappointed. 3.5/5 ⭐️ 108/1089
This album was very interesting, and it was not what I expected it to be. I wasn't a fan of the first half, it's just not for me, and that's ok. I really enjoyed the second half however. There's just a certain atmosphere that the electronic instrumentals created that really resonated with me. It felt as if time had stopped moving while I was listening.
This is my first Bowie album. I would describe it as having some classic rock sounds mixed together with lots of synths and other sounds. I also hear some pop sentiments. It's weird, of course, because it's Bowie and all I've heard about him is how unique and eccentric his music is. It's not too weird for me, though. There are several instrumental songs that are sonically interesting and at times, beautiful. I actually preferred them to the lyrical songs. "Warszawa" sounds like a piece from a film score, and I thought it was lovely to listen to. I liked the atmospheric feel of the music, for the most part.
After multiple tries, I guess I just don’t like Bowie
I thought I didn't like David Bowie, and then I listened to the first half and was like "maybe I do" and then the last few songs were "wait no" so i'm very confused
Interesting! Very atmospheric, not much singing. The synth felt very 70s/80s in a mysterious and whimsical way, but also sort of eerie and ominous. I haven't seen Labyrinth, but I noticed myself imagining that kind of high-concept fantasy landscape. Sad undertones made me wonder what was up in his life at this point. Ask Max what he thinks!
The first half didn't do much for me. The second half is what elevated this album in my mind.
Not the best Bowie album. Some sounds phoned in a bit. It's still definitely worth a listen. He's definitely experimenting with his sound here. It's interesting, but overall not great.
Dreamy, wavy, psych. This record sounds like a movie soundtrack and I really dig it. Bowie's vocals are the usual level of greatness, but they are sparse on this album and he allows the music to run the show. The creative sounds that are used is really awesome, setting such different moods throughout. The sequencing works so well together. I like this one a lot.
I guess I am just not so much of a Bowie fan. Second record, now an older one, and it is also fine but not something I would return to.
Me gusto bastante. Me sorprendi. Mi favorito: Always Crashing In The Same Car.
Interesting sounds
I know Bowie was weird, I just wasn't expecting so much instrumental synth music... I know people love this one, I got bored.
Speed of life, 1# track, probably the best one. Different from what davie had done. I think it inspired the joy division band, which is one of my favourite band General overall, its a good album. Lots of guitar synthesised sounds, wich is not to my taste. Overall 11 out of 20.
I feel like I'd want to experience this album live in a small, intimate venue.
some nice sounding stuff, but i dont quite think it comes together as neatly as id want
The worst thing for an artist is reaching a status where "your record starts working for you": you can do anything, journalists will approve, and the public will go wild. David Bowie also succumbed to this sin. While the first half of this album is short, somewhat understated, but still pleasant songs, typical of the glam-funk Bowie, the second half begins the "Experiments" section: oppressive ambient interspersed with throat singing in an invented language, sounding like the soundtrack not just to a film, but to a David Lynch film. As expected, Brian Eno "did a favor"; he'll still confuse many good artists with his gimmicks... And yet, years later, the album is considered practically the peak of Bowie's creativity! Basically, Low is Kid A for boomers. Both decent albums, but would anyone have praised them so much if the artists' names weren't on the covers? Of course not.
i feel like there’s been enough david bowie
A bit disappointed by my enjoyment of this album. I normally like Bowie a lot, but this project had a big background-noise vibe unfortunately.
meh. doet niet veel voor me
warszawa was my fav. pretty cool and i enjoyed listening but i wouldn't put it on again
Way more instrumental then I was expecting
Nothing particularly noteworthy here by Bowie standards.
His best
Not my favorite Bowie album. First 1/3 not bad, wanes through the second 1/3, closing 1/3 just super melancholy instrumental work that does nothing for me. Could be a 2 but I can't bring myself to do that.
It was too much plain music for me. I really appreciate something more lyrical and storytelling rather than just music.
Some of this album is great, the rest is very forgettable. Not bad, but somewhat uninteresting.
A good mix of familiar early 70s bowie and experimental bowie. Its a very interesting album, eerie and mysterious at points, jazzy, ethereal... Fav Tracks: Speed of Life, Be My Wife Sadly, didn't care too much for the back third of the album. It honestly seemed a little out of place compared to the first 2/3rds
Sound and vision elite. More so an Eno album for side B, for better and for worse
Definitely better than alladin sane Some really good fun pop tracks on the first half of this, somehow I’d not heard sound and vision before but that slaps. The second, more ambient/instrumental side didn’t really land as well for me though 3.5
Its bowie thays for sure but it might be the least interesting bowie for me at least. Like i turn it on and get a tiny bit of the man who's name is on the cover but not alot. Sure he arranged all this and wrote the songs but having 97% of this without him singing makes me feel a bit ripped off. But the songs are almost all interesting in some way or another. Alot of them are pretty and do have some motion. But its too much of this intumental stuff for me. Im sure there are a million people who would say this is their favorite bowie album and I get it. This thing has to be your thing though. And its not mine. When it was over and it played the next song like the closer it was Brian eno and that put the whole thing into context for me. Of course its like him. And I dont hate eno but im also very weary every time I put on a new eecord of his. Sometimes its a great record with compelling songs and sometimes its droning nothingness for an hour. And this bowie record sits somewhere in the middle of those highs and lows. The low here isnt all that low but do many other bowie records are much much much more engaging.
Honestly, I just got tired of Bowie and didn't want to listen to this expecting it to be his usual kacke, but this really surprised me. Mostly the second half
>Deep in your room >You never leave your room Very true. I liked the instrumental part in the latter half a lot. The sung parts in the first half not as much.
Ok
Feels like the most non-Bowie Bowie album. Got a sense of what's to come.
OK, not his best work
Very ethereal and atmospheric for much of it. It's not at all what I expected when I saw that it was a Bowie album. It wasn't my favorite, overall, but it's far from the worst in this list. Very middle of the road.
always thought to be one of the loveliest albums from David Bowie, I don't know how it fits into his whole artistry, as I haven't listened to him religiously enough. But it just feels me with magic, of the Twin Peaks variety.
Experimental Sinfónico Electrónico Distinto
I did not like this album the first time I heard it. Though I didn't know it, it was likely Brian Eno's influence. I was also not a fan of "Remain In Light" by Talking Heads because I felt like he had his hands too much in the production. Anyway, once I spent more time with Eno's music from his early glam days to his ambient era, I fell in love with pretty much every thing he's done. So when revisiting this, it was a lot more palatable for me, and it was such a great marriage of Bowie's sensibilities with Eno's ambient production. Still not my favorite Boeiw, BUT I liked it a hell of a lot more this time around, and I can imagine it growing on me the more I listen to it. Will be in my regular rotation.
I've heard some other David Bowie albums and they are a lot better, but i still enjoyed it. Sound & vision the highlight track
Sound and Vision // Be My Wife //
je me disais bien aussi ça faisait longtemps
I understand where he is going here, and liked the sonic landscape overall, but I gotta have more David Bowie on a David Bowie album.
Too much ambience. I don’t think every Bowie album needs to be on here.
This is my seventh Bowie album, and my favorite (so far?). I think it's because he doesn't sing much in this one.
Not a listener of Rock, but the album is very interesting and since it's not really lyric, it's an enjoyable moment
I like the mix of instrumental music between the songs, but this CD I think falls flat more than I want. Maybe it is because I was listening to it in the gym, but the songs were slow and none of them jumped out to me as highlights when I finished the album.
Feels colder and more detached than previous work and with the exception of “Sound and Vision”, lacking what sounds like hits. I can imagine this one growing on me upon further listens, but not as immediately compelling as the albums recoded with the Spiders from Mats.
Once again a Bowie album that suffers from not being hunky dory, but I like the first side of this one better than yesterday’s.
Enjoyed this slightly more than the last! Some bangers, some clunkers, overall good.
Interesting album! Not my fave, I was surprised by the amount of sound tracks but there were tracks I liked.
I mean it’s ok
(4/7) c'mon dude you can do better
159/1001 First listen. Better than expected. Love Bowie’s hits but haven’t explored much beyond those songs. Maybe I’ll branch out from here. 5/10
I did not knoe David Bowie made this kind music at some point (Sven was shocked that I didn't). Not my personal favorite, but interesting!
I know that Bowie changed his sound a lot throughout his career, so I was kind of excited to hear what direction he went in for this album. It was interesting, but I just felt sort of meh about it overall. I wasn't expecting there to be so many instrumental songs. There were a couple of songs I liked though.
Love a good David Bowie Albumn, enjoyed this one and might listen again
Went by to fast need to listen 2-3 more times to fully get the hear this album.
A couple good hits in this album ‘sound and vision’ being the main highlight, the other sons with vocals were still decent enough. There were quite a few instrumental tracks, whilst they sounded kinda cool as soundscapes I was hoping for more vocals from Bowie. Overall, a good listen but just felt a bit average.
Pretty good. Not for me.
Mysterious sounding. Very movie soundtrack.
Surprisingly a lot of instrumentals. But still a good album.
David Bowie is David Bowie so its good. Had it on working on some assignments so it helped me cruise through it.
I know they share a producer and all, but I never realized until today how much this album sounds like Fear of Music in places. Unfortunately Bowie, though he may be rock music's most well-known chameleon, just isn't as interesting to me as David Byrne. It's above his typical standard, but it still leaves me cold.
third Bowie album for me and still not a fan of his style - but the ambient part of the album was really enjoyable
Zu den bekanntesten Stücken gehören „Sound and Vision“, „Be My Wife“ und „What in the World“.
it was pretty good.
Love the first half - yeah, "that" drum sound is great, especially on the sublime single, Sound And Vision. The second half, with it's mostly instrumental synth tinkering, I can take or leave, to be honest. I'm listening to this straight after Autobahn, so I'm a bit "pioneering electronic shit"-ted out at the moment. Not Bowie's best long player for me, but probably the best of his "Berlin" trio.
I liked the first half but not the second. If I’m listening to Bowie I want to hear him sing.
Yeahhh. little too artsy for me like i just like a simple little song with words and energy but i grt why somrone would rly like this. maybe if i listened more id like ti more. i like sound and vision
Better in second listen but still lacking grooves.
Side 2 was really cool At various points on the album I was reminded of Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, Kraftwerk, Dead Can Dance, and XTC.
honestly really good and now i’ll have sound and vision stuck in my head for the rest of the day
I really wanted to love this album - and indeed the second half instrumental section was engaging - but overall just sort of feels mid as my kids would say. It's nice but not great. Perhaps those feelings will change on further listens but rating this anything more than 3 right now would be a disservice to my other 4s. 3/5
Not the best but I like the experimentation
probably my least favorite of 70s era bowie.
Like most Bowie, i like but don’t love it. It’s sometimes challenging but i like this era with the back end of the albums being instrumental. I think i need to spend more time with Bowie, to “get it”
Not the Bowie I was expecting but mucho original for its time i would suspect
This was an odd one and not my favorite by Bowie.
Bowie forgets how to sing and instead plays synth. Kinda vibey, and ahead of its time. No bangers tho
this was l8ser bowie where he forgot how to write a lyric, was recovering from being a bung-destitute-cocaine loving L.A. dropout. I think in and amongst that haze, he had some sense of purpose though. he must've. this album still has meaning, albeit tragic. 3.5/5. highlight: sound and vision.
Pleasantly good
It was solid, but a bit to hippy dippy for me
sound and vision is great, but a lot more of the album is just sound. Not my favorite Bowie.
A couple of good songs but quite forgettable
No bangers :(
David Bowie try not to ruin the back half of a great album with drug-fueled introspective music challenge (impossible) (Ok, the cliff that this album fell off of was not quite as steep as the one that Heroes did, but it was still enough to take this album from a 4 to a 3)
Quite okay
Sound and Vision slaps. Fun vocals throughout, very interesting changes throughout with electric sound mixed with classical vocals? Can be very ethereal, and cool ambient style at the end. but not really my style.
It does get a bit low at the end
Instrumental and very bowie, kinda boring
Sound and Vision é a melhor música do álbum.
Even though this is not my type of music, I listen to it and know it’s great. The songs were shorter than I expected. Always Crashing in the Same Car was my favorite. The last few songs felt unsettling in a really fun way, almost monastic and alien. Just really interesting to liste to.
Bowie, this was alright, but I know you can do better. Sound and Vision will always have a soft spot in my heart after HIMYM, Warszawa is kinda cool and trippy, but nothing else stuck out.
I never would have guessed this was David Bowie. It’s such a departure from what he’s done traditionally. It was an interesting listen and in all honesty I’m not sure how to rate it, yet.
This is gonna be controversial but Low is not my favorite Bowie album. I appreciate the artistry and the choice of a world famous singer to put out a very instrumentally focused album. But the cumulative effect is a soundtrack for a movie that never was. The set of songs lacks the storytelling that underpins much of Bowie’s catalog. All in all a technical and artistic achievement to be sure but not a very compelling listen to me.
3.75
warszawa was a good instrumental, sounds like it should be in the resolution of a movie plot creepy towards the end couple of songs.
Half the songs are instrumental (and boring) which is odd for a singer
I’m a huge Bowie fan but I struggle with the Berlin trilogy because the instrumentals never really grab me. Other than Subterraneans which is wonderfully evocative, I feel fairly cold towards the back half. Some great songs in the first half though.
Sound and vision - great song. Four instrumental songs at the end, not my bag x
I’m a Bowie fan - and I recognize what the album is “all about”, but I’m just going to call a duck a duck and admit that this is not Bowie’s best work, critics be damned. It sounds like what it is, unfinished.
I am really digging the harmonica! I rewound it to listen to the songs with lyrics- he sounds so lonely in Be My Wife! The instrumentals were good for working to, but nothing really called to me on this album.
i can enjoy it, nice album
This is what I think of when I think of what Aliens would listen to. Favourite Track(s): Subterraneans Least Favourite Track(s): Warszawa
Decent
Bowie's music always sounds like the soundtrack to an animated adventure film to me
The best Bowie album so far, putting it at a whopping 3
just a whimsical man
Good return from Bowie with the Eno collaboration.
Still processing - to be determined later
Don't consider Brian Eno to be David Bowie's saviour, but thank goodness David got well and gave us Heroes. Scary Monsters etc and Let's Dance. If there had been no more from this man, we had plenty of his genius to enjoy.
Speed of Life - 2/5 Breaking Glass - 3/5 What in the World - 4/5 Sound and Vision - 3.5/5 Always Crashing in the Same Car - 3/5 Be My Wife - 3/5 A New Career in a New Town - 2.5/5 Warszawa - 3/5 Art Decade - 3/5 Weeping Wall - 2.5/5 Subterraneans - 2.5/5
Another artist that doesn't need an introduction, but one who I have never delved into before. I know a handful of David Bowie songs, but none of them are on this album, so this will be completely new to me. Looking ahead, there are a whopping nine(!!) Bowie albums on this list, so I guess I'll become extremely familiar with his body of work as I progress through this. • Starting an album with an instrumental is always fun, and Speed of Life a good one. It's dripping with that Bowie sound • Breaking Glass is a different song, and a very short one at that • What in the World did not do it for me • Sound and Vision probably has my favourite vocals so far, his lower register parts sound great. I like the guitar and bass work too • Always Crashing in the Same Car is another one I can absolutely get behind, it weirdly reminds me of Ian Dury in places (and, funnily enough, this album released the same year as New Boots and Panties) • The piano in Be My Wife is absolutely slamming, those bass chords are so prominent in the mix. I really like the main riff too, and the disco beat in the chorus is a cool change of pace • A New Career in a New Town is also a really good instrumental. I like the beat a lot • Warszawa onwards feels like a totally different album. While the first half feels like a David Bowie album (albeit a pretty distinct one), from this point on the album feels like a different artist took the reigns • While the instrumental half of the album does have its moments, it didn't resonate with me the same way as the first half Favourite song: Speed of Life
It didn’t leave me with any strong impressions. But a nice sound
I understand why some wouldn’t like this. This listener loves a journey, whether it be physical, spiritual, mental, or in this case, audial. Side 1 has a familiar Bowie sound. I very much enjoyed Sound and Vision Side 2 is ripe with Brian Eno influence. It can be ethereal (to me) or scary (to my wife). Overall favorite track was Subterraneans. Ultimate rating is 3.5 rounded down for this albums overall accessibility. I wouldn’t enjoy it at all hours of the day, but certainly would(and will) enjoy it every now and again.
You can always tell David Bowie is having a lot of fun when he is recording. He was having fun with this one too, but unfortunately, I didn't have as much fun as he did. It's not a bad album at all, it's not as good as most of his other albums in my opinion, and I could leave it out of a David Bowie playlist.
Hmm, voornamelijk instrumentaal album.
I think I respect Bowie more than I like his music. Historically I find him interesting, and I like the concept of this album, but I didn't find it too engaging. The last half was great for a late night run though! Favorite Song: Subterraneans
Second (of nine?) Bowie albums on this list. I am thankful that I read the description of this one before listening otherwise I don't know if I would have fully understood what was going on. Some of the songs on side A are cool and I would have been curious as to how they would have sounded fully fleshed out. I've also never thought of myself as an ambient fan but there were some cool soundscapes on side B. Maybe that was because I heard it on my early morning commute. Either way 3/5.
Rv
Much better now that I’m older.
I can never remember which Bowie albums I like. I guess this is one of them.
i had fun listening to this album!!! it has some sorta futuristic vibes to it (?) not really well-versed on music lol nevertheless i enjoyed Breaking Glass sm.
Good until it goes a bit weird at the end.
Easy listen. Nothing special tho tbh. Gets pretty boring, but the instrumentals are so good. Maybe, I'll like it on a revisit idk. Feels like lounging music.
Not bad, pretty dark for Bowie. I felt neutral on the first listen, loved it on the second, and then turned it off on the third. Interesting.
This was an interesting album and very different from the type of Bowie I have heard in the past! It's a cool sound and much more lowkey and ambient that usual. I enjoyed it, but nothing really stood out for me. I would revisit though. Top Songs: Speed of Life, Sound and Vision, Be My Wife
overrated. people will give david bowie credit for having brian eno make ambient music for him when Enos solos work clears this out of the water.
I don’t really know what to say about this album. A part of me really likes it, and then the other half is thinking “what am I listening to right now” but tbf I think that’s what David Bowie is as a whole. I didn’t like the first two songs because I’m not fond of purely instrumental songs but “What in the World” was a pretty good song and I liked it. I thought Sound and Vision was also very nice. Very chilled out and it reminds me of my childhood, for some reason. I didn’t like Always Crashing in the Same Car, I can’t really place why but it just wasn’t my thing. The second I heard Be My Wife though, I knew I was going to like it. I thought it was a very interesting song and I thought it was pretty sweet. Warszawa was……. Interesting, I’ll give it that. Again, I can’t really tell if I like it not. Art Decade was very groovy and interesting. It reminded me of an indie game instrumental. Weeping Wall also made me strangely nostalgic but in a different way that Sound and Vision did. Subterraneans was a song that I quite liked. I really liked the synths and almost ethereal feel that it had. An album that I would’ve never listened to on my own, but I think it was a mixed bag overall. A lot of songs that I didn’t really fully understand, but I liked them anyways. 6/10
Interesting for sure. Comes across as an experimental album, to me atleast, maybe it’s not tho. It was a good listen but I can’t see myself listening to it casually. Fav track was Be My Wife.
That was a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing ambient album.

Standouts Speed of Life Sound and Vision
good david bowie album
It's all pleasant to listen to and I'd happily have it on in the background anytime, but there's not nearly as much about this that really grips me as there usually is in a Bowie album. Just the nature of ambient music I guess...
Low sees Bowie at the most interesting point of his career. While the sound experiments don’t quite pay off here as they do with Heroes, I admire the boldness of an album consisting mostly of atmospheric and ephemeral explorations. At such a low point in his life, Bowie chooses to let sound speak to his frame of mind, rather than lyrics or poetry. I like it, but I don’t love it. ✨
I love how he’s sampling really fun sounds and it’s only 1977!!!! He’s a pioneer in music — he’s not afraid to break the standard pop mold of “intro , bridge, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro “ Album starts strong but withers…
i would put this on in the background to chill and do stuff
Need more time with it, will return because I think it deserves it. Liked the second half a lot though I felt like they didn't leave me satisfied, as though it didn't resolve or explore it's ideas as much as I wished. I don't know about his singing, it's crazy that this guy got as popular and successful as he did. Not to say it's bad, I like it, it's just strange.
Artsy and experimental but doesn’t blow me away
meh. i like a couple of songs, but not really the instrumentals.
Sad Bowie is so sad
Sound and vision is a banger, the rest is a bit too out there for me
I remember getting this album from my wife after she picked it up from a market in Canberra, Aus. Spinning this was a revelation. Pop mashed with electro inspired by kraftwerk? Say less. However, is it Bowie’s best? No… but you can feel the potentiality in each track as they explored clunky synths that would eventually evolve. A fun listen regardless. Track that stands out (as always): sound and vision.
mama liebts 💕
I can appreciate it s little, but its all a bit too experimental and all the tracks sort of blend into each other and im not able to grasp onto them. Love Bowie and Sound & Vision is a favourite, but the rest of the album leaves me a bit cold..
neobičan, kvalitetom neujednačen bovijev album koji mi, priznajem, nije sjeo. al dobrih i više nego dobrih momenata dakako ima
