Reviews (page 8 of 14)

won't pretend there aren't some bangers in here, but i won't pretend folk as a genre is justified either

Another forgettable album in this list.

Good album. Nice vocals and interesting "re-interpretation" of folk music. Songs I enjoyed: "White Winter Hymnal" (probably my favourite), "He Doesn't Know Why" (interesting outro), or "Your Protector" (which is kind of "epic folk"). This is 3,5 stars for me. I have to admit that my mind startedwandering at times, so the music is definitely good but not really captivating for me.

they really nail that "Fleet Foxes" sound

This is the first time I gave this a close look. It's a fairly slickly produced folk rock album that sounds like an update to the Laurel Canyon sound. It's certainly listenable and there is some real talent here, but I probably won't listen to it again. Not really for me.

I don't know how I feel about this album, its ok I guess.

Some cool moments, but overall, not a lot of memorable stuff going on here.

This was inoffensive and forgettable. It felt kind of sad-bastard adjacent...like maybe Bon Iver or Father John Misty or someone got ahold of some Paxil and it lightened their mood for a bit. Not an album I'll be listening to again, though.

Horrifying, put my earphones back on to him signing JEEEEESSSSSEEEEEEE.... very scary stuff.

Nice and chill but a little "samey" after a while. 3.5

2.75. Was expecting more stomp-clap-hey folk rock for some reason. Its not that so it’s fine.

2.75 - I get why people like this, but it's not for me.

Not for me / 5

American Mumford and Sons.

Some gorgeous moments but not enough of them to make this a genuinely great album. I think of Fleet Foxes as a really solid band with a handful of transcendent songs - and that's pretty good! Not many bands can say that.

Well I need to mark this one down as requires further listening as I see from the reviews how polarising this album is. I felt neither the love nor hate whilst playing through this. Maybe further listens would change this but it was a bit background music for me

Felt like summer

opening track pissed me off as soon as it started LMAOOOO but i stuck with it and it redeemed itself. a solid work that i’ll listen to again while writing or grading papers. strong 3

Very aware of fleet foxes but don't think I've listened to them, in my head they are in the tame impala bucket of very popular slightly twee folk indie, though as I haven't listened to them I have no idea if thats fair. I think this album was good while at the same time knowing it's not really for me. Carries it's older folk influences well while still sounding modern in some way but it's just a bit too tame for me to be a proper fan. Would understand higher marks from others but a 3 from me.

Album 1000! Never listened to a fleet Foxes album before, but I thought I knew what to expect, and I did! It's good, but not sure it's anything to write home about. Thought I might recognise more than 1 song. I liked tiger mountain peasant song 3.5 but on the 3 side.

It was nice listen but tbh it doesn’t feel memorable. Likes: White Winter Hymnal; Ragged Wood; Blue Ridge Mountains

Molto ambiental

Respect a lot of the craft here, just doesn’t quite cone together for me

I’ve never liked this album as much as others seem to. It’s good, but just not that good.

Not my style but great still good music

Very nice. Great harmonies and catchy lyrics. I've like these guys for quite a while. However there isn't anything really original here. For me it falls under "pleasant but mostly forgetable".

oooo ragged wood he doesnt know why

This is an interesting album. Lot of good songs on here, but nothing really stood out as an OMG I HAVE TO HEAR THIS. I may go find more stuff by this artist because I did enjoy it.

Yeah, pretty good. Unfortunately I got it on a Friday and it's not really Friday music. This is more of a Tuesday or a Wednesday album; Thursday if you're demented. But it's good. 3.5/5. Maybe a 4 if your generous, more than likely a 3... Tough call all around.

The most notable moments of the album: Tiger mountain Peasant song and White wonter hymnal. A beautiful folk album by the American Fleet Foxes. Melodic sounds that take you on a journey. Moments of relaxation and spiritual upliftment

Sad music for beautiful people.

Not bad. Good sound.

Buenobueno

Enjoyed this but probably needs a couple more listens to fully appreciate it, bit stomp stomp clap

It's not for me but maybe I can see why you'd want to point out that it was made in 2008. Actually you know, if is "ok".

This is a debut studio album from indie band Fleet Foxes. The album cover is quite unusual. The music seems like folk/pop to me, and has a CSNY sound through some tracks. There are lots of songs about nature. Overall the album is short and easy listening and a solid three stars.

Hipster modernity! I like that there are lots of little animals in the songs. In fact it's a very thematically cohesive album, which I appreciate. Like a less muddled Arcade Fire. I do like it, but other than WWH it's a little too mellow for me. Highlight: 'White Winter Hymnal'

Arsty and very nice dual vocals unique

Great mellow album with so many layers. Good mix of guitars with spacey effects. 3.4/5.0

Pretty enjoyable, but not so much that I’d be likely to relisten. A little too polished, somehow.

There's an issue with this record: there's an intention, an idea, but the development at times is poor, and many times it also feels insipid. There are some pretty nice ideas, although. I can find the appeal, but there is so much music like this one that is more interesting, which makes me not love this one. Sure, I've enjoyed listening to it, or, at least, it has been a pleasant album. But I don't find anything that would make me really want to listen to it again. It's nice, but not an album I would listen to again, probably.

I didn't get into Fleet Foxes until Helplessness Blues, but this isn't vastly different from that. I do very much love the harmonies.

I had listened to this last year and kept meaning to revisit so this was the perfect excuse. I like the sound and it's very unique in ways, but I don't think I'll be revisiting the album anytime soon and it didn't leave me with a desire to seek out more of their discography.

Nice. Not bad.

Fear fun is right

Gteat folk rock album. A very pleasant surprise.

it's fine!

I enjoyed this one.

I feel like I’m not one of the cool kids. I’d like to love this album, but I just don’t get what makes it special. It’s lo-fi indie folk. Ok. If I end up over there, at the old record player, playing “Forever Changes” by Love, can I still be invited back to the next party?

Epic, etherial folk for a new generation. Although in execution it is a blend of a lot of different genres and soundscapes. Musically, I found it very compelling and interesting, but I think it will take multiple listens to appreciate the narrative and lyrical content. Perhaps after I complete this list...

i defo listened to this on my dad's ipod touch.

i get why people liked and like this album, but it doesnt do enough for me. it feels flat in places, it glows when it should be dark. i wish that there was more shine to the guitar. i truly believe album number two outpaces this one by a lot. still a solid album though.

Pretty good album, just not quite my speed or style.

The music is nice, the voice is great, but most of the songs are too soft, I feel they need a push. "Can I believe you", not in this album, is much better than any song in this one.

A lot of ambiance and interesting sounds. Listening to it like 4 times in a row didn't make me love it, but I like Fleet Foxes well enough normally.

Little bit too twee for my tastes. 2.75

Lovely to listen to this again. Forgot just how drenched in reverb it was. Pretty vocal arrangements that I adored at the time. It’s maybe grown a little grating in 2026 but fair fucks to Fleet Foxes. They sure made a nice debut album.

Softboi music. Felt like it's missing fun hooks

I'm not into this. Never liked that kind of music, still listened the whole thing and it was quite pleasant. Sounds a bit like theAngelcy.

I remember some of the songs pretty well, very catchy. One of those albums that spawned a whole subgenre.

Nice chill indi rock. A few songs reminded me of the temper trap and then I just wanted to put that on instead of finishing this album (but I still finished this)

Twee folk rock. Very Mumford-y. I imagine them cosplaying as hobos or minstrels.

It was okay.

Pretty music throughout. Liked Ragged Wood and Your Protector.

Nice but didn't grab me.

Enjoyed the album but it almost feels bad scoring it a three after giving With The Beatles that yesterday.

It sounds well done, but even at a little over 39 minutes I found it a bit of a struggle to get through to the end. I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either. This is a solid average album. Inoffensive, but not very engaging.

I enjoy the fact that Fleet Foxes unmistakably sound like Fleet Foxes.

Tykkäsin ⭐️⭐️⭐️

It is hard to find folk music that isn’t whiny, so I appreciate that about this band.

The singing style isn’t my thing personally. Otherwise pleasant to the ears. All the songs are solid, none that are amazing but also no skips

Folk but good

It’s not the most boring thing on the list by quite a lot, but I don’t find it particularly interesting either. It’s not Stomp Clap Hey, but it shares traits, more than my much beloved 60s-70s folk. The Beach Boys-sounding bits are cool, but it just makes me want to listen to The Beach Boys instead. 3/5

This record felt like a breath of fresh air when it came out, but quickly disappated into semi-semi-irrelevance. Lovely harmonies and maybe ⅓ of the songs are really good, but most of it just kind of floats by. Perfectly nice, but not exactly a record you MUST listen to. Better than The Eagles though, though maybe getting a 1-point boost to reflect that.

Its a winter album, doesn't play too well in the summer

The vocals are still gorgeous, but I got a little tired of it by the end.

I'm quite unsure about this album: on one hand I like the atmosphere and musicianship, it sounds like psychedelic folk from the 70s done right, on the other the use of reverb on the vocals is overdone (maybe to hide limits in their harmonizing?) and most songs are in desperate need of a hook that just isn't there (they're pop enough to have the necessity of catchy refrains). So yeah, I guess this is a middle of the road album for me: good as background music, but not good enough for attentive listening.

borgar

A lovely record

Very listenable if somewhat safe album. Very much in my comfort zone in terms of my own taste but maybe not an essential listen.

I feel like I kept reading about them but never really hearing it until now. More folky than I would have thought but it was alright. Nice album cover art.

yeah okay 3.5

It’s Nederlandse Spreekwoorden by Bruegel baby, who cares about the album?

I liked it better as the Decemberists

No me gustó ninguna canción en concreto, pero el album en si esta muy bien

It's a nice folky vibe. None of the songs are bad, they're just comfty

Took me like 3 tries to get through this album. Good stuff, but all sounds kind of the same to me. Wanted them to switch it up a bit.

I thought this album all around was pretty nice

I hadn't realized before how millennial core this sounded. I still like it though.

cabañitas con machiatto

Mumford and Sons' Cousins

Enjoyed this album. It was unexpected. Interesting compositions and good voices.

Dette har jeg hørt før, og likte det godt sist gang også. 3-4

Very soothing but doesn't sound too different to the albums of the same genre coming out at the same time

Perfectly adequate piece of modern Americana. You can imagine them mid-afternoon at a festival with this washing over you. Inoffensive.

I was actually kind of surprised that I didn't recognize any of the songs on this album, because I've definitely heard of Fleet Foxes and it's a type of music I typically would listen to and be familiar with. I'd describe their sound as a mellower version of the Lumineers. Almost a Bon Iver kind of sound. I'm on the fence with this one. I enjoyed listening to it and wouldn't mind listening to it again. But, I found it to be a bit forgettable, which is maybe why none of the songs sounded familiar - maybe I've heard them in the past and they just didn't stick with me. It just sounds like a lot of other folksy, indie rock stuff that came out around the same time, so not sure I would distinguish it over anything else. Very polished and beautiful songs. The harmonies were fantastic. But nothing super unique.

Zzzszzs no thank you all I think of is the video where the hard better faster stronger girls dance to mykonos

Cromulent but forgettable. Sounds like 2010's indie folk rock

Very good, very solid dreary album that sounded like it was recorded in a gym lockeroom shower.

This album is seasonal for me. Cozy winter days cuddled in a blanket.

Album 158. Fleet Foxes (https://open.spotify.com/album/0Syn17gPB8FVLmRpFiYWyM?si=EzKg7RmoT_GpKudt0XkAfQ) — Fleet Foxes (2008) Very beautiful and calm folk album. It tends to be very similar in a bad way to many other albums in the genre, but somehow it works well. Added two most popular songs of the album, they're really good. 3/5 Liked: — White Winter Hymnal — Blue Ridge Mountains

Me dio mucha paz

Bump up a point for the wifey (who likes these guys). Nice sound, but a bit monotonous for me.

calm. pleasant. nice vocals. suitable for dinner parties with guests with unknown music tastes but known discerning taste, or campfires.

Ambient and nice. Happy to discover an album that is very appropriate to put on in the background for lovers of music that will add to rather than disturb the vibe - non distracting

I don't know why, but I could never really get into Fleet Foxes. I've loved the folk renaissance of this millennium, but these particular folks kinda bore me. One of the things this project has taught me is that I like catchy songs, and that's not what Fleet Foxes are about. This was still fine, just not something I'll ever seek out again. 3.3

Well crafted and well produced but not for me. Didn’t hate it but didn’t like it. It was just playing and I went about my day.

Interesting folk, Irish feel.

Love the overall sound. I have trouble relating to the lyrics which mostly are pretty vague and hard to contextualize.

Aside from the very strange, twangy, a cappella opener, this was a nice easy listen. Nothing extremely noteworthy, but there are some very pretty harmonies.

I'm really only familiar with this group's "White Winter Hymnal" so this is a first-time run-through of this album and this artist for me. I feel like I have some idea of what to expect. It's alright, I don't hate it, but it's also just not something I'll be coming back to either. At the time this came out, it was probably more new and fresh, and then people came after them to beat this horse to death, and now it just feels blah.

Probably a 3.5 but not quite a 4?

I have heard of this band and know people who rate them highly but I just didn’t get it. I thought the songs were inexpertly crafted. Not sure what else was going on musically in 2008 but perhaps this was feted due to lack of good albums in charts at that time. From Your Protector onwards it got better but then that is probably because they sounded like CSN&Y and the Oliver James riff sounds like There is a Mountain by Donovan.

This wasn’t actually too bad

second song is the one

medio aburrido, bueno como musica de fondo 2,5 estrellas o 3 no se ah

Music for white people who attended UC Santa Cruz. I am this person. This isn’t really my jam, but it’s not as bad as some other stuff. Pretty good, actually.

I really don't like this but they are at least good musicians

It's fine? I just never understood the massive hype when it came out.

Cool vibes, early Mumford and sons ish

If this album cover was from the seventies, this album would have been dope prog. Alas, it's from 2008, so it's lukewarm folk music instead. It's fine.

Pas désagréable

nice sound, reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel

Smooth and chill.. Enjoyable, but it doesn't quite scratch the itch if you're trying to really lock in.

Don t like

I have never thought about Fleet Foxes before this album, and I can say with the fullness of my heart that I won't think of them in the future either. This is another of those albums where it is just there not great not terrible just there.

It's good as background and calm music, but I don't remember anything from this album. So for me it's not really cool. Rate 5/10

your protector - fav song

Good stuff but honestly a bit too poppy for me.

Was ok

Solid album, excellent production, beautiful harmonies.

3- Stars (7/15)

Really enjoyable

Sehr entspannt be sunne ufem feld. 1-2 echt geili songs aber au paar wo mir zu cheesy sind

Not my style but it was a decent listen. First time actually listening to alternative/indie rock and it's not that bad.

Had no idea what to expect but I like it. Picks up steam towards the middle, really enjoyed "Tiger Mountain -> Quiet Houses -> He Doesn't Know"

I didn't completly finish this one Its really good individually but it all starts to sound the same after a while. I'll def give it a relisten

This album is deeply atmospheric, giving the listener a feeling of starring in their own Indie film.

The harmonies were beautiful. Very folky.

Well crafted, but too pretty and doesn’t go anywhere I’m interested in

If this were on the heels of my Sufjan 5 I may be more generous with my enjoyment, but after a PJ Harvey 5 I was hoping for some more edge. This album is about as edgy as a nap. A very dreamy, pretty nap. A dreamy, pretty nap with a bunch of guitar dudes.

Very pleasant. It's quite possible I could even remember some of these songs if I'd listen to this album again, but I won't.

(70/100)

Have to agree with some of the other reviews, feels a bit bland and preachy at times. I don't hate it but I don't love it - a few good songs.

A lot of it is a bit too twee for my tastes. Of other bands in this genre, I prefer the Decemberists. "Your Protector" is the peak of the album for me.

This is so much better than I expected. It does drop off towards the second half but man the opening few songs are stellar.

I like it, but blends into the background too often.

it was ok. sounds like a bunch of other folkish type groups that came out at the same time like the Lumineers. nothing really stood out to me.

I liked it. Not quite sure why. But I do. Pleasantly surprised

It's the kind of pretty indie music I'd wish they would turn down/off in a hip coffee shop.

Nå hadde dem flaks. Ikke alltid man er i humør for slikt, men var jaggu det nå.

Unique sound Some cool ideas on here and some standout tracks

When this was released in 2008, I was obsessed with it. It seemed to come out of nowhere and took a lot of very familiar sounds and packaged them in an interesting way. Nearly 20 years later, it's still quite enjoyable but doesn't hold the same power for me. A lot of the songs are just ok. There are a few real gems, Sun It Rises, White Winter Hymnal, Blue Ridge Mountains. The rest is fine. Of the 2010s pop folk revival acts, they were the best by far

i love white winter hymnal, but none of the other songs were incredibly striking. i think this is an album i have to listen to more and more.

5 songs in at time of writing (out of 11) and the overwhelming feeling is that of 'It's perfectly pleasant, but nothing stands out'. The current track, "Quiet Horses" has some lovely drums and guitar going on, with dreamy vocals bordering on Gregorian chants, but no part of it feels incredibly distinct. However, it does very much feel like one of those albums that, when you close your eyes in a dark room with only the sound of this playing, it will take you on a visual journey very much in the style of it's album cover. For that, it deserves credit alone. "Blue Ridge Mountains", if I had to pick, is my favourite track. The vocals, guitar and tambourine created a surprisingly beautiful harmony that I just couldn't shake.

I hate the vocal self harmony thing he does... maybe its just me. It just sound stupid with his voice. It gets really tiring. This whole album is just not for me I suppose. I dont get the love for white winter hymnal. I thought it was so annoying. People are saying the lyrics are genius but hes just repeating the same mid lyrics 3 time. Most of it is really forgetable. Not the worst thing though. 2.8/5

It's quite a nice indie rock album!

nice chill, a bit movie/background music but still very nice

I haven't heard this group before so it was nice to see what they are about. This is the kind of music you can have on in the back ground and grandma won't be offended (sorry about the metallica granny!). I kind of spaced out for a lot of it. It's the kind of music you listen to not listen to.

solid 3.5

There are much worse examples of this kind of music, at least.

Such an autumnal album and I hold a deep appreciation for autumn. Unfortunately not autumn right now so will have to revisit

Achei um álbum ok. Bem tocado, vocais legais... Só que soou esquecível. Tangzu Wan'er 2 Bass Editon.

folksy interesting

If this had made different decisions, made a few left turns, I’d have really enjoyed it. If it doubled down on the harmonies and the instrumentals, gave more CSN&Y, I’d have been on board. If it had been more stomp clappy like Mumford or The Lumineers I’d have enjoyed it. If it had more traditional folk like the great Irish folk bands or an edge like the punk folk bands I’d be so on board. If it were poppier with the same vibe, like Foals or Rogue Wave, it would be great. If the piano got more focus and this was more Supertrampy I’d love it. Hell, if the entire album sounded like the track “Your Protector” it’d probably be a four. Unfortunately it didn’t do any of those things and felt like at every turn it made the less interesting decision. Is it bad? Nah, not really. It’s just aggressively ok.

This album's fine. There are definitely some Beach Boys Pet Sounds vibes, mixed with CSNY and Simon & Garfunkel. Which should mean I'd absolutely love this. But to be honest, every song sounds quite similar and none of it jumps out. I don't hate the sound, it's just a little bland. I think I would've loved this in 2008. The cover is gorgeous though. 6/10

it's good. not great. that's their follow-up album, but this is good

Nokså fint å høre på, merker at Comet Kid er inspirert av Fleet Foxes. Minus for White Winter Hymonal som Pentatonix har kopiert. Her ødelegger Pentatonix for Fleet Foxes med sin horible acapella.

Good modern take on folk rock. Nice instrumentation and vocals, pretty solid stuff. There were some songs that kinda dragged on for me but overall pretty good stuff

I can get behind some folk, but this one just didn't resonate with me much beyond the opening track, which gave me goosebumps.

Stomp Clap is to millennials what the Swing Renaissance was to us GenXers. It's embarrassing and does not age well at all. That said, I did like Fleet Foxes as an early iteration of this genre. The harmonies are undeniably good and ethereal

Peaceful

Indie Me gusta

really sweet sounding album, not my genre but it was good background music

Rating: 7/10 I think Fleet Foxes’ following two albums, Helplessness Blues and Crack-Up, are modern folk masterpieces, but as it stands their debut is definitely the best introduction to the band as their least complex, most familiar and straightforward, and ushers in the indie folk sound of the era that many lesser bands would follow. Really good debut effort that’s always good to return to.

So soothing! But doesn’t move me to the core.

It was good.

Not bad. Like the voice. 3,3

Love the beginning of the second song

I kind of liked this. The production is beautiful. However, after a while the twee vocal delivery began to lend a sameness to the album that probably means I don't return. A bit 'Christmas background' in places too. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Twee ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 228 Already owned : 52 Purchased : 12 To buy list : 2 Nope : 162

i liked the softness of this album -- reminded me of the song "fairy in a bottle" by jacob alon

Soothing folk music is always nice to have on in the background and this is a great example of that. I don't get to deep in to the music or lyrics, its just nice to have something playing while reading or cooking and this fits that niche nicely.

Three songs in and I'm liking it! It kinda sounds like what everybody at Hope listened to Ok I spoke too soon. This album feels very "background music" to me. There's some good ones, but I'm not feeling like it's super revolutionary. Final thoughts: sounds a lot like college. Which isn't bad, but it's a bit bland/all the same. There's a definite vibe but it lacks interest.

I know this had been played for me before by someone who hoped I’d like it. I kinda remembered White Winter Hymnal. In general, it sounds pleasant but unmemorable… like it’s trying to stir up an emotional response but doesn’t tap into anything real. Perhaps a live performance would make these songs feel right and memorable… for now, I find them aptly fleeting.

es como road trip, pero un poco demasiado Pop

Goddam, too many 3's on this list. What is this, my kill count?

Definitely a vibe. Maybe a boring one for some situations

me gustó (7/10)

While I’m not a fan of most of the mid-00’s folk revival, this album hits a little different. Beautiful and more sincere than the other bands attempting this sound. I enjoyed this one more than I expected. Although it can be a bit too understated at times causing some of the tracks to bleed together. 6/10 Favorite Tracks- “White Winter Hymnal” “Blue Ridge Mountains” “Oliver James”

Middle of the road. It very much embodies the early 2000's indie/folk scene.

From now on, listening to Fleet Foxes shall be known as going "Hunter Biden-mode." Crack pipe not required.

critical support for hunter biden, the next president of the united states

What's this? A post-2000s band that uses actual instruments? And writes their own music? I'm a bit shocked. I'm also pleased, this was quite good. Not sure I'd go back to it often, but it was far better than most of the other "modern" titles on the list.

🥇white winter hymal 🥈ragged wood 🥉he doesn’t know why HM: your protector this was a nice album to listen to as a whole but not as many of the songs stood out to me individually

A classic 2000s, it's ok but the folk rock sound got very stale, although not there fault 3.5*

It wasn't bad but didn't blow me away either. Solid all around.

I have nothing good or bad to say about this, very far outside of my normal music

not bad, liked a few

I know wanted to like this more than I did. It’s very accomplished, and quite an achievement for a debut album, but it’s good, not great. The only one I’ve heard Brie is White Winter Hymnal, which I think is the stand out track.

Need to be in the woods and a millennial to listen. It was still go juts not my thing

I know it's an excellent album, but it's never really done it for me.

Its fine, Mumford and Sons without the banjo, good background music at a summer BBQ that runs from a blazing afternoon into the night....

Genre: Chamber Folk Man, this was sort of the artsy offering in the stomp/clap era in the aughts. A debut that was very popular and very well-received, and White Winter Hymnal was absolutely everywhere when it came out. Going through the album, it certainly has its moments of real beauty, and it's one of the easier to listen to probably in the entire book, especially out of the modern offerings here. I would recommend this to others, and even re-listen to it, but in the same breath, I don't know how essential this is. A good record that has its place, but I don't know if this before-you-die type stuff. Good album. 3/5

One of those gems I had forgotten about

Good for background music while working.

Cabin music

Very whimsical, I felt joyful like I was outside feeling the wind and sun. Fav song was either white winter hymnal or blue ridge mountains.

Like a blanket that’s slightly too thin

Overall this was pretty solid. Not something I’d seek out and listen to on my own, but solid. Worked well as background music, though I’m sure there’s a lot I’m missing. I enjoyed their singing. Definitely can’t understand how it made so many people in the reviews so extremely angry.

Pleasant listen! I can't say the vocal performances really do much for me, but I love the way the album so vividly evokes nature through its lyrics and instrumentation. It's such a unique atmosphere that I'm considering revisiting and seeing if the rest grows on me over time. Standouts: Sun It Rises • White Winter Hymnal • Ragged Wood

sounds like a crunchy childhood and an america that no longer exists

only thought about chorus

Better than I recall

Not bad at all! My prejudice kept me waiting for the worst, because I don't dig that folky style, but the Brian Wilsonesque vocal harmonies made me keep listening and even enjoy the tracks (at least most of the first half of the album). Definetely will listen to it again

Pleasant

This is the sort of stuff i like to hear on the list - just something different. it's got lovely vocal melodies with nice folky instrumentation. though some of the songs are just a littleist of bland for my liking

Near the peak of indie music and brings an old school chill classic rock sound

- etheral soft folk, i love it, ça donne envie de se promener et danser dans les bois - les harmonies sont sincèrement hypnotisantes - parfois répétitif mais still a vibe et je réécouterais plusieurs des chansons - meilleure chanson: sun it rises, white winter hymnal

tiene unas cuantas canciones guays pero se me ha quedado muy sin mas la verdad, pero siento que simplemente no estaba en el mood para el

I enjoyed this album but I can't say I remember a single song next day. Admittedly, I had it on in the background while working so that might be my own fault. Strong 3

Low key and mellow throughout. Nothing absolutely brilliant, nothing bad either.

Not really sure what they were going for. Like it felt like they were going for weird but got too poppy. Im not saying its bad. It would be wrong to say its bad. Just not accomplishing much.

This was very good. I enjoyed the songs and the groups sound.

I was surprised to not hate this. My brain had a negative association with this band but I couldn't have told you why. It turns out I had the misfortune of hearing the first single and wrote them off after that. The song writing and production were actually really good even if this still isn't something I'd ever choose to listen to.

This sounds like the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings.

The late 00’s indie acoustic music is very far away from my wheelhouse for music - that said, this was some of the better music from that genre. Rather calming, and I appreciate the music on this album. Just not for me.

Folk classique, bien arrangé mais les voix sont pour ma part très lassantes.

Mer min stil, men ändå lite tråkigt

decent, good to get into the work day and mellow me out a little bit. it did all sort of blend into one, though. i wanted a bit more, it got a bit boring and samey and at times i thought i would end up loving some tracks just for them to not reach a peak

Listened to the tracks and they had a nice new sound for me. Overall the album was fine not really my kind of sound but some of the tracks definitely were added to the playlist in the future.

I had heard a lot about this album, specifically good things and rave reviews, but hadn't listened to it, or really anything by Fleet Foxes, until encountering them on this website. My first impression is that it's a folksy, gospel-inspired sound, which isn't necessarily bad, but this is also a sound done by so many other artists I imagine it's hard to stand out or make something uniquely good. The first track didn't really capture me, but White Winter Hymnal is amazing, and helped me lock in, until Ragged Wood outstayed its welcome, and the rest of this album continued to disappoint me, save for Heard Them Stirring and Blue Ridge Mountains. It's not the most complex or lively sound, the music is moreso mellow and simple, without sounding trite, and at rare times beautiful. At the end of the day, I don't see why this lit up so many lists and garnered such rave reviews, as I don't think this is anything revolutionary or new, it just simply sounds good and doesn't do anything that could be seen as offensive. Maybe my ears are broken, or maybe I just don't like this brand of hippie folk, but I likely won't listen to this again. Solid 6/10 thanks to 2 really good tracks, and one pretty alright one Favorite Tracks: White Winter Hymnal, Heard Them Stirring, Blue Ridge Mountains Least Favorite Tracks: Tiger Mountain Peasant Song, Your Protector, Meadowlarks, Oliver James

Quite boring but I can appreciate the musicianship in the tracks. Album is at least listenable. I won’t be revisiting any of these songs, too folky for me. Lead singer has a decent voice too. Despite the sleepy and uninteresting lyrics I’ll bump it up one from 2/5.

A little slow, but i dig some of the songs

Don’t think I’ve finished it, but was pleased to find some familiar tunes. Very mellow and nice background music

Fleet Foxes are a band that I like listening to but never consider putting thought into actually choosing to listen to them. It's just kind of there.

I liked this one!

Found it a bit boring.

Arcadian

Really liked it. Was surprised I had not heard of them or this album. Nice acoustics and calming vibes.

Bello peró perchè scegliere questo e non un altro album folk degli anni 2000? Cos’ha di speciale??

Folk My Morning Jacket should really work but kinda didn't. 5/10

Soooo 2008 - it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to anything with this specific sound, enjoyed revisiting it a lot, but not sure if I’d go back any time soon. I would’ve liked some of the highs to be higher, some extra variety would have gone a long way.

modern folk

Decent album, nothing hard to listen to, but also not much that makes me want another listen.

I like it. The only major issue with it is that with every good thing there is to say, there is always a "but," statement. It's gorgeous, but you can find this exact sound in so many other albums. It works, but I would never reach for it when there are other albums that capture these exact emotions in a more powerful and captivating way.

Was expecting a lot more from this as I know some very cool fleet foxes fans and the album cover is gorgeous. I was underwhelmed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this music was playing in an elevator somewhere

Occasionally threatens to be interesting. The things they reference are nicer. Sort of soft folk(ish)

Pretty stellar

I really liked this one. In all honesty I did listen to it in three bites and probably would have found it a bit samey if I hadn’t, but it feels like a good little find that is now in my rotation.

Kinda mixed on this one. I feel like it's that quintessential alt folk sound, hell they might've even created it, but at some point it felt a little repetitive. How many times do you need a few guys harmonizing in a hallway? It was fine, I enjoyed the White Winter Hymnal, and I'm not even sure if that's their hit but feels like it might've been. Moving on

i could see how this would hit on a mountain roadtrip white winter hymnal will always be iconic

Good I guess. I wasn’t wowed by any of the songs or the album as a whole. I’m not sure why it made the list but alright.

Fine. Feels like id listen to this on a road trip staring out the window at the sunset. Not something Id explicitly come back to.

Very comfy one. It reminds me of sunshine on tree leafs while i was laying on my hammock reading a fantasy book. It also has medival vibes which is great. On the other hand i wouldn't call it a masterpiece. Song's have rather repetitive main theme, however some are really unique. I will definitly come back to this album and add it to my reading-music. Overall 5,5/10

It's okay. A bit too folky for me, no doubt inspired people like Mumford or Mountains/Men. All a bit samey.

White Winter Hymnal was already a favorite/the reason I’d heard of Fleet Foxes. Together Mountain Peasant Song and Blue Ridge Mountains were other standouts and this was a pleasant listen overall.

White Winter Hymnal has been turned into a scary tik tok sound. Interesting album!

Nice. I already liked this album from around when it came out. It's got a great relaxing folksy sound to it. Only one song that's very catchy though imo.

A folk/classic rock hybrid with a splash of prog makes for an interesting if slightly long LP from the Foxes. One of those albums you might pull out occasionally especially of you like chiming melodies and harmonies. Worth a listen.

This album was pretty... pretty boring! Honestly, it was both beautiful and monotonous. White Winter Hymnal is of course really catchy and enjoyable, and it's not often you hear a round on a contemporary album so I'll give Fleet Foxes that much. By the end of the album, though, all of the tracks had sort of blurred together.

Can appreciate the album but ultimately this genre of music is not for me

I moved to Washington a little over 10 years ago and I've surprisingly only heard the name "Fleet Foxes" come up two or three times since – certainly not enough to pique my curiosity and make me dive into the Seattle band's music. That said, I was happy to finally have an excuse to check them out and went into their self-titled debut album with an open mind! I honestly can't think of a ton to say about this one. It wasn't unpleasant to listen through, but the songs rarely spoke to me. I'd certainly prefer listening to more of this over some of the "stomp clap hey" indie acts of the early 2010s and the sense of melody/harmony came across quite well (reminded me a little bit of Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), which is probably the best thing I can say about it! Spotify auto-played "Helplessness Blues" after it ended and that made me kind of wish that song were this album's closer. Weirdly, the album also made me think about how far Imagine Dragons has gone downhill since their first album – probably because Robin Pecknold has similar vocal inflections to Dan Reynolds here and there. Perhaps they'd be making albums more similar to this one if "It's Time" ended up being Night Visions' biggest hit? How wonderful that we get to live in the timeline where "Believer" has over 3.5 billion streams. Sigh... Highlights: Ragged Wood, Quiet Houses, Your Protector, Blue Ridge Mountains

Pleasantly interesting but did not hold my attention to the whole album

I liked it. like a 60's Mumford and sons.

Pretend folk music. Almost a little churchy. I might actually like the album if there was some depth to it. 2.5 but rounding up to three.

6/10 Favorites: Your Protector Oliver James

This is a very ‘ nice’ album. Nice music, nice vocals, just nice! I think the first half is better than the second as it seems to wane towards the end. Also I do prefer Birdy’s version of White Winter Hymnal. Overall it’s quite good, a nice listen. Haha

Helplessness Blues is infinitely better. But White Winter Hymnal is so damn good that it makes the whole album worth it.

I could see getting into this album a bit more. I have heard one of these songs before. It's not the vibe for me right now.

My understanding is that this is super high-quality modern folk. Technically, I get that: we have good production, decent arrangements, and relatively skilled musicians. It's just so boring, though. Any yes, folk is generally boring, but none of CSNY would recognize this as folk. This band has nothing to say (to a non-WASP, suburbanite audience at least). It's kind of as if a Stepford wife made a folk album. Just really boring. Influence 3. Quality 3. Intangibles 1. Sleepy go night-night 1. I'm giving it 3* because this album is so middle-of-the-road in every way imaginable.

I should love this more than I do. Interesting melodies, sweet instrumentation and wonderful echo to the production. It also sounds like all of the other "retro folk" groups that came out around this time. Great background music while cleaning the house.

Ah nice. Always a bit novel to see the modern end of the list and never really given these a concerted listen across an album… It feels such an original sound, and especially at its release. But there is also something of it being a little repetitive or variations on a theme. Pretty good songwriting and great atmosphere and depth, but the songs can sound pretty similar and ultimately using the same sound and approach. Was pretty done by the end and got the gist (3.5)

Pleasant listen, but nothing mind blowing. This era of highly produced indie-folk always feels a bit insincere.

5.7/10

Listening with no background knowledge whatsoever. Let's see how I do. Folky start. 60s Steeleye Span feel. To start with at least. Production seems too clear and even to be 60s though. 60s band loved to overuse Stereo didn't they? Ok so how wrong am I! For a start they are American. And it's 2008! Quite mellow. Nothing I want to 'move about' to or that makes me want to listen to again more deeply. Could be any folk band of the last 50 years. Not bad though.

So nostalgic of 00s indie

Decent. Not amazing. Early on, I thought this album was pretty boring. Some nice harmonies and decent music, but nothing spectacular by any means. Later on, I though this picked up a bit. Heard Them Stirring and Blue Ridge Mountains were my favorites off of this. A good record, worth the listen. Not anything I would come back to regularly though.

The epitome of "Stomp Clap Hey" music- part of the wave of Folk re-re-revival around 2010. The album is good for a debut- they have a nice sound and it'a pleasant to listen to. Overall- 3.5/5
