Reviews (page 6 of 14)
love this one
Very solid debut album. Refreshing call-backs to traditional american folk music but it isn't afraid to push the classic sound in innovative directions. Cozy album for log-cabins and cool mornings. 8.2/10
Föredrar exempelvis Your protector, Blue ridge mountains och He doesn’t know why. Stabil fyra, även om den är mer jämnbra snarare än att ha låtar som verkligen sticker ut.
Great! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hard to fault other than maybe a touch same-y.
It's a very pleasant listen but I'm a lyrics listener and it didn't really register on that level. I knew White Winter Hymnal pretty well already and it's a lovely song, but that kind of folky Christmas energy is through a lot of it. Also I love the artwork.
Some really beautiful songs but didn’t keep my interest the whole album
A beautiful, almost medieval love story immersed in a woodland atmosphere. 'Sun It Rises' may not have been a strong beginning, but 'White Winter Hymnal' and 'Ragged Wood' carried the album, and 'Your Protector' was a particularly strong point. It was a little uninspiring, but overall, it was a very pleasant listen.
Not genre breaking, but well written indie folk. A good listen on a cold autumnal morning. 4/5
Not exactly my thing, but not bad. A little bland.
I feel cozy and warm while breathing in the clear mountain air, snow softly and slowly covering my porch, while the fire crackles in the fireplace - the album. On a more technical level: Indie Folk Pop, but really well produced. Leaning heavy on the gentle choir and acoustic sound, and tends to build up to a climax that occasionally doesn't come. The soundscape is also not particularly varied, but the album is short enough to not become boring. Where it does excel, in my opinion, is in conveying this mountainy feeling and invoking images. All in all, an excellent debut.
Feels like Ren Faire music. Easy listen.
Sounded like autumn to me. Was pretty good
My beloved...
Nice and calming
pretty good
I liked the blend of soulful americana and indie pop it was a good introduction to this band that a lot of my contemporaries like
Gran álbum!! Precioso, mucho folk americano e inglés y ecos de Zeppelin, Beach Boys, The Byrds y Simon y Garfunkel. Tratamiento pop pero con toques progresivos y psicodélicos a veces. Los juegos de voces simplemente magistrales.
sounds like a mystical chamber folk movie soundtrack. definitely not offensive, but probably not what I’m going to jam while working or driving or making dinner (the three most important music listening activities)
Très bonne découverte.
I really enjoyed this album? I had heard a few of the songs, but never listen to the whole album. Good all around.
4.5
Fleet Foxes slipped through my fingers during their most active years. Whispers of them here and there but always just sort of outside of my acquisition. Being familiar with a lot of the circle they traveled in makes hearing this album quite resonant with references near and dear. It didn't capture my heart immediately so it's not a five star review but it's a record full of promise to grow into that appreciation.
was only familiar with them vaguely but this was pretty - think it'd be a great summer sunny outdoor album. although it felt like a less-good lord huron to me.
have you ever heard and thought it was calming thats what I thought about the album montezuma it has good lyrics and I like the instruments with the heavenly voice that plays with the lyrics why I like this song is because its got good lyrics and instruments I would recommend listening to this album.
Do like upbeat music? Well, then this is the album for you! I like the song your protector because it is upbeat and the singer has an amazing voice! I also like the instruments because they are amazing too! SO that is why I recommend this album.
Chill early 2000's pop-folk- rock. 4/5
Like it
Great when it came out, great now.
Never heard of these folks before and what a chill smooth vibe. I'm here for it.
Not a very interessting album, but perfect for putting on in the background on a cold winter day.
It reminds me very much of The Last Unicorn for some reason. I'm enjoying it, as it's very restful.
Great for a the season. Easy to listen to, but the start of the hymnal annoys me because I’ve hear it so much haha
Quintessential indie of the 10s
Loooooove White Winter Hymnal, the rest is fine and not memorable for me.
Always loved this. Great that so many influences cohere into something so distinct and beautiful. 4.5 🌟
I'm a bit drunk but there's something quite spiritual (and autumnal) about this album. It entrances me me like Bon Iver and Mudlakes Occupanther.
I quite enjoy this style of harmony-pop. They sounded like the American version on Mumford and Sons without the banjos. Which is a good thing.
Notes
Not bad. Reminds me of Band of Horses.
Contemplates death in a melodic fasion
Songs written with a lot of heart to it, even if I felt like I was being preached to by a Christian choir group.
Nice folky stuff. Makes me wanna buy a phone and run to the beach at the break of dawn in 2012
That is some debut
Peasant music
I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would
I am not a fan of folk music at all, mostly because I never grew up on it but this album is fan fucking tastic. the production is awesome, the vocals are amazing, and the total vibe of the album is unmatched. debut album too. incredible.
I enjoyed this decently well, which is interesting, as I wouldn't say that I am necessarily a huge fan of the genre. I'd probably do a 3.5 if available, but since that isn't an option, I'll round up because of liking it despite the genre.
Good folky
Oh, Fleet Foxes, I really like u! I absolutely love White winter hymnal, but most other tracks in this album just couldn't keep up. That is why this is a 4 not 5.
Pleasant listening. Very nice on the ears. Sounds like adventure the whole album. I dig it
That was nice. This is a nice album. I like it. I'm cool with it being on the list. It's different from other things. It's a folk album that has clear classic roots but also feels modern at the same time. That's a good thing. The sound is very pleasant to listen to. I love it. It makes me happy. The singing is similarly nice. I like the harmonies. The writing is quite good too. This whole album makes me feel cozy in a way. This album makes me want to go outside in the fall. It's not quite fall yet, but at some point in the future, I would love to spend a fall day in the forest listening to this album and then come home to binge watch Over the Garden Wall again. That would be nice. This album's great. I wish I had more to say. High 4/5.
Well I'm a sucker for 00s-10s indie folk, so this one is right up my alley. The lyrics, the instrumentals, and the harmonies are just so good.
Very unique sound, thought I was listening to the beach boys for a second, the harmonies and music are just breathtaking. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Stands out as one of the best debuts from the 2000s wave of folk-rock inspired indie bands, with a touch of neo-psychedelia. Recalls bands like The Shins and Arcade Fire. Beautifully-arranged, well-written and produced songs.
Wore this (mp3) album out in 2008/09. If I recall correctly, they got rockier on the second album and kept moving in that direction, but I could have done with another album or two of folk music and harmonies. (I mean, the only point of “heard them stirring” is to flex those harmonies.) I know I listened to Shore, their 2020 album, and I definitely enjoy Helplessness Blues, that second album, but this is the only one I return to with any regularity.
4-5/5; interesting
Slow pace, might be goo cry to
Happy to have been a white person whose soul was touched.
This was a great album. At times I felt like I was on the way to the ren faire. Other times were more introspective. I loved white winter hymnal
Beach boys do folk
Too slow for my taste but very well done.
Didn't think I'd like it, but I did :)
Very dreamy and feywild fun, would happily listen to again
Some good stuff came out in this era and this still holds up. A unique almost mediaeval sound but great songs.
good vocals a chill indie album
Good harmonies, chill vibes.
Good
You know, I was very in to this album when it came out and listened to it a bunch, saw them live on that tour, and then just stopped listening to it and never checked out any subsequent releases. I was expecting that I'd be pretty meh on it, which I was, but it's also just a good record. The sound is a bit too one note for me, but in general it's super solid.
Agree with the reviewer who said this is an album for simpler days. 4 stars.
I was only familiar with their 2017 release. Why I haven't delved deeper in their discog; god knows why but I'll surely do it now
Really enjoyable background music.
A really unique and interesting sound. Was too sleepy to give it a proper listen, but I’ve heard them before
Was introduced to them years ago. They have a unique sound just reminds me of some valley or field, hard to hate. 3.5
If The Wicker Man starred The Beach Boys. The Bwicker Manboys.
Never heard this band, but so good. It’s almost like a new take on late 60’s early 70’s, but still modern and indie ish. Very cool.
Haven’t heard this album in over 10 years. The reverb and mixing always felt claustrophobic which turned me off. Once I got through that this time, I actually found myself enjoying most of it. I would give it a 3.5 if I could.
Sweet folk music. Very boy with guitar. I liked when a choir and grandiose instrumentation occasionally joined in. Stand-out: Blue Ridge Mountains, White Winter Hymnal
Original and pleasant 3.9
Folk at its core can really bore me. Luckily, Fleet Foxes are doing many musically interesting things here beyond the beautiful vocals. Changing up drum patterns, unexpected chord changes, and overall a really great studio treatment that serves each track really well. When I was in college, my friends and I would sometimes sit around the fireplace when we were feeling mellow, and put on one of the acoustic Alice In Chains EPs, and it just seemed to fit the mood perfectly. This album screams fireplace in a winter cabin cozy.
Loved it
Very good music. Great vocals, nice songs.
Not the biggest fan of this folky pop mid-2000s genre, but the Fleet Foxes did it better. Melodically this is far more interesting than the other bands of this ilk.
I feel like the first half of this album is some of the greatest indie folk ever produced. I love the interesting song structures and the lush harmonies. "Ragged Wood" especially is just a hell of a perfect song. Then I feel like the back half of the album always struggles to leave an impression.
Sounds like very calm alt-J
Open, spacious sound that makes you feel like you're outdoors. I do wish that the mix was adjusted to allow the vocals to be clearer--sometimes I have not a clue what the singer is saying-- but I get that it creates a sound like monk chants in a cathedral.
I like white winter hymnal! And I feel like I would probably like the rest of the album in the winter
Never quite my thing before, but I was vibing with it yesterday.
Melodic, orchestral, and perfectly what it was for the time in 2008.
A more modern take on folk music. I like it.
So chilled I almost fell into a chill coma
Never heard this music before. Enjoyed! Will listen again. American Indie Folk Band from Seattle
an album that sounds like a foggy forest hike in the middle of winter. there's a true rustic feel to the album, how it's played and sung makes me feel like i'm one with nature. like believe me, you've most certainly heard plenty of folksy tracks but this is folk at its core, with natural vocal harmonies, guitars and... i think those are bodhrân drums. once the first half of the year ends and all that head and sunshine turns into cold temperatures and withering leaves, i'd say this is the perfect time to listen to this.
Lovely stuff
Chill folk
I listened to this on a beautiful sunny day laying in the grass and I think that that is the perfect way to listen to this album.
First time hearing this band. I liked them alot.
Sustained and overlapping vocals, atmospheric music
This album just encapsulates that era of indie folk so well. And you know what? I like that era a lot.
Really liked this when it came out. STill stands up in book. STEVEN!
Someone new to me, and quite good.
Feels like it’d be a good fall/winter album
Nice quiet music for a rainy afternoon…7/10
Great folk rock/chamber folk debut album by Fleet Floxes. The vocal harmonies are beautiful and remind me very much of Crosby Still & Nash and The Beach Boys. It's an excellently produced album, too, and the overall atmosphere of the album is calm, and mythical. I used to listen to this album a lot in the past - I still love it and find it very pleasant. It may not be a 10/10 album but it's definitely one of the gems of the 2000s folk rock/indie music.
A pleasant surprise, a new artist to look up. I could listen to this type of music on repeat every day.
I listened to this album so much when it came out. I love how their music conjures this mythical quasi-medieval Americana, melding English folk and chamber music, Beach Boys style vocal harmonies, and classic country music depictions of the US landscape.
Lots of falsetto and harmonising throughout the album, lively first half then slightly toned down. Great listen. 7.5/10
sounds like Grizzly Bear and Band of Horses. They have some good songs. some of it sounds like 60's folk.
Beautiful harmonies and voice work throughout. Not usually my jam but I found myself hooked, it also doesnt overstay its welcome. It gets a little sleepy here and there but overall put me in a good mood. Blue Ridge Mountains and Oliver James hit just right.
90.9 The Bridge plays these guys. Interesting hearing where it all started.
A very well produced folk album. Swelling vocals and harmonies. Notable tracks include the very popular "White Winter Hymnal," "Ragged Woof," and "Quiet Homes." The album sounds like adventuring through the mountains, or a long road trip, or spending the evening in a warm log cabin.
Love fleet foxes, prefer their live stuff to the albums which I feel can be a touch overly produced and intricate. Looking forward to Robins late stage one man and a guitar phase as that will be perfection for me. Nonetheless, some absolute classics on here.
Honestly a vibe even though it’s not what I usually listen to
This album came out when I was in high school and I was a fan. High school was a time when I really started to explore new music. Prior to that time my scope was limited to basically classic rock and pop punk and whatever my parents listened to. I probably found out about Fleet Foxes the way I found out about most new bands at the time. Either an album review in Rolling Stone magazine or seeing them on a late show like Conan which I watched religiously. Either way this was an early foray for me into harmony laden folk music. I love a good harmony and this album is partly responsible for discovering that love. All that being said, this album definitely holds up. My opinion about it hasn’t changed much. For me it’s definitely a front loaded album. The first half is basically flawless, I like every song. The second half falls off though. It feels like they needed more songs and threw some filler tracks on it. Blue Ridge Mountains is solid but the rest are just kind of forgettable. Not bad, definitely listenable, they’re just sparse and light in the harmonies. Maybe they are grower songs that I just never gave the time to breathe, maybe I’ll return to them and give them more time. But as of writing this my opinion is first half perfect, second half needs work.
Great album. Puts me in a very pensive mood. I remembering listening to this when it came out and it was defining for that year of my life.
Takes me back. Fun hippie chill music.
It's genuinely great then and now. Solid 8/10 even tho it's not my usual fave genre
Groovey
Fleet Foxes were indie folk darlings when the genre began to gain commercial success. I distinctly remember hearing White Winter Hymnal on CBC radio 2, thinking to myself about how unique their chamber-choir harmonies were. And indeed, Fleet Fox's debut album is full of incredible little moments like that. The band managed to capture such a uniquely tender sound that maintains its choral charm throughout.
I enjoyed this album. It reminded me of Winter in a forest:)
pretty beautiful
It was good, feels like walking through a forest in a morning.
Good winter album, slightly awk to have it as summer is starting up lol.
Das gefällt mir schon ganz gut, denn die Musik ist abwechslungsreich und die Mischung von Gitarren und Vokalmusik lässt mich so richtig mitgehen.
New age folk kind of album. The vocal harmonies on here are great. I would like to see them do background vocals for other artists if they haven’t already. White Winter Hymnal is a cool song. Cool to see a recent song get sung alongside your normal Christmas songs and hymns. Standouts: White Winter Hymnal, Ragged Wood, Quiet Houses, He Doesn’t Know Why, and Blue Ridge Mountains.
Knew this album prior, but never fully listened to it, went in loving white winter hymnal but came out loving Oliver James a tad more, overall a strong 8/10, makes me feel like frolicking threw a meadow, definitely love it but not absolutely in love!
This would have been an obsessive issue for me in Fall 2021. I do love a couple of voices and an acoustic guitar
Pretty good
white winter hymnal was the only song i knew prior to listening but god this is such a pretty album, it sounds like the cover art looks (a medieval fairytale)
If I ever wanna frolick through a lush meadow, I will listen to this
If you know one song by Fleet Foxes you know them all. If you like that song then you’ll like this album.
Folk music fans would love this album. Haunting voices coupled with a variety of melodies made this an enjoyable first listen. And I’m not a folk music fan!
Really enjoyed it, especially after second listen when my mind was relaxed and I could focus on the album. Reminds me a little bit of The New Pornographers in all the best ways. Enjoyed the moody atmosphere and storytelling the most. I think this one is a grower that benefits from repeated listens. I’ll be coming back to it for sure.
This album cannot be blamed for the horrendous albums that followed in its wake, I can't blame it for all the wishy washy crap that poorly imitated it and came out after. I hadn't listened to it since the year it came out, maybe not even since the week it came out when i bought it. I remember liking it back then, and i like it now.
I've always loved just how lush the sound is on this record (all Fleet Foxes records for that matter). The mashup of folk, psychedelic pop, and Laurel Canyon styling makes for some amazing camp fire/road trip/rainy day vinyl spinning (I disagree with you Stuart).
Not folking bad
Gave the vibes of driving through the country side in the late evening.
I've listened to this one before. I like it more the more I listen to it but it doesn't have any like BANGERS, just songs that I like and some songs that I like quite a bit. The sound is nice, but a little same-y.
This is a truly beautiful work of art, and combines a variety of musical perspectives to create a truly unique experience. The vocals are majestic, instrumentals are good, and there are no skips for me. 8/10
Enjoyed the sound
Hyvää folkkia ja vähän rockia. Onpas tullut hyviä ehdotuksia nyt putkeen. Laulaja muistutti vähän jostain mutta ei ollut tuttu. Kuuntele uudestaan. Parhaat: Tiger Mountain Peasant Song, Your Protector
solo falta mykonos para que sea 5/5
An interesting album, they have a smooth and very melodic sound. It sounds folksy without being over the top.
Has an interesting folk mixed with the beach boys feel that works very well together
I’m not a huge fan of indie music in general cause it’s usually incredibly boring and everybody seems to LOVE it but this was pretty good. The folksy feel to it was quite nice and nice break from what we have been having listening to. The vocals were superb and the harmonies were great. It was really nice to listen to a band with great vocals. The only critique I have that prevents it from being a 5 is that it’s just kinda tame and boring. It’s very much dinner party music which, while nice enough to listen to, is not something I would sit back down and listen to again.
knowing they're on the Sub Pop label this was not at all what I was expecting. enjoyed this listen quite a bit. great harmonies, chill vibe, nice guitar
Very cool album
Really liked this. I'll be looking for what else this band has done since this album. Really enjoyed this.
I had sworn I've never hear Fleet Foxes before, but I did recall hearing "Your Protector" before once I got to that one. Not my usual thing, but I really enjoyed it. Lovely example of modern folk.
Lovely little album, I was decidedly late to Fleet Foxes, but this is a gorgeous album I love returning to once or twice a year, preferably on a nice road trip. Robin Pecknold has such a distinct and pleasing voice and the pastoral, choral harmonies are pretty unmatched. If anything you could say this leans too much on a classic sound, but over the years I've come to appreciate this as opposed to the obfuscated, murky sound of like Bon Iver's debut. "White Winter Hymnal" is rightfully seen as a classic.
Heel nice
Haven't listened to this in ages, and will surely come back to it. Some distance actually makes me appreciate it and its impact a bit more.
The Fleet Foxes are relaxing to me, but not many of their songs stick out individually. Your Protector is a song I knew. I like the larger collection this album is part of. Very layered, echoey music. I like that they have a song about the Blue Ridge Mountains, which I grew up on the edge of in the ridges and valleys of the Allegheny Montains.
fresco, partes innovadoras, con ganas de escuchar más de ellos.
Nice harms. Songs hold up pretty well.
Had a few of these on repeat in playlists over the years: Sun It Rises, Blue Ridge Mountains. Never sat down and listened to the album through. Very enjoyable although better suited for listening in a relaxing spot rather than my afternoon commute - but alas that is the only time I get to listen to most of these albums :(
This caught me on the right day.
A unique sound and not overly kitschy.
I liked Sun It Rises and then White Winter Hymnal even more but the rest of it was pretty forgettable. Nice instrumentals. Low 4, I’m feeling nice.
This is such an interesting album. I love Fleet Foxes, and while all their subsequent releases have been pretty good, I don’t think they’ve released anything as good as this. It’s basically folk gospel music made by nonreligious city boys, so it’s a totally different take on the genre(s) than pretty much anything I’ve heard before. Mostly though it still conforms to the indie rock style that other people in Fleet Foxes’ demographic were creating around the same time, like Grizzly Bear, Iron & Wine, etc. Just more acoustic and with more close harmony. “White Winter Hymnal” is one of my favorite songs; it has the most vivid imagery of any song I know.
this intro is so weirdly atmospheric…not usually a folk person so i’m intrigued about this parts kind of remind me of Bright Eyes maybe it’s cause i’m dumb or just don’t really listen to this genre but why are these songs blending together for me :’) typed that right before “He Doesn’t Know Why” so statement redacted the second half is pretty good tho bit surprised by the closer…not as good as opener imo
i was only familiar with a few songs and damn i liked this album a lot! def gets spinned in autumn. found few songs i really like. Good Album!
It's easy to forget that Fleet Foxed only released two albums during their original run, because their sound was EVERYWHERE in the late 00s/early 10s. It takes a bit away from the enjoyment now - a 5/5 in 2008, a 4/5 in 2024.
Not my favorite fleet foxes album but a great one nonetheless!
I like the layered vocals. Definitely best appreciated with headphones. A lot of indie folk can be hit or miss for me, but I enjoyed this. Interesting coming after Simon and Garfunkel, feels similar but missing something in comparison. Not as many standouts but consistent throughout. Top songs: Sun it rises White winter hymnal
Holds up!
Meget lille 4-tal!
grandiose, majestic sounding stuff
I actually really liked this. Perfect vibe for solo travel
Some new age folky stuff but I dig it. Vocals are pretty good and some reason give off pretty good vibes. I don’t wanna give it a 4 but I think it does deserve it for a reason….
qt y comfy
Love indies raritos
I like this kind of music, Good vibe. My wife enjoyed listening to it during dinner so bonus points for that.
Pretty good!! He doesn’t know why is a banger
The harmonies are perfection!
Harmonies, Americana, acoustic guitars, blue ridge mountains, and artistic album art. A recipe to my heart. If you haven’t heard pentatonix cover of white winter hymnal you definitely should. It’s always on my holiday music rotation. Verbal meme: spiderman pointing at each other fleet foxes and local natives.
I was reading the artist description on Spotify when I started the album and saw that Fairport Convention was an influence and got scared for what I was about to endure. Luckily, the sound I knew from White Winter Hymnal and Ragged Wood stayed consistent throughout the album and I couldn’t be happier. The indie folk movement has really grown on me and I’m sad I didn’t give Fleet Foxes a deeper look until now. I know it’s a pioneer-like situation, but I wonder if they’d be more popular if they were gaining popularity now? Either way, I thought this was very enjoyable and from what I read, their second album is in line with this one, so I’ll listen to that next. I really liked the song Blue Ridge Mountains. But the Smokies are mountains in Tennessee and the Blue Ridge are the eastern-most peaks in North Carolina and Virginia, both being part of the larger Appalachians. “Near Tennessee” isn’t specific enough. So get your shit together, Seattle boy.
I do love me some folk music. I had a feeling this was going to be a five star for me, but while there were some definite standouts a lot of it just didn't grab me. Still a fun listen.
Pop/Folk White Winter Hymnal Lässt sich sehr gut hören, ist eher ruhig 4/5
I loved this album when it first came out, not least because it establishes it's credentials immediately and any lover of two-, three-, four-way harmonies knows that they are going to enjoy what's coming. "White Winter Hymnal", "Your Protector" and "Oliver James" stand out.
Fleet Foxes fucked Gee’s dad. Probably not better than half the albums I’ve rated 3, but ah well, 4 nostalgic stars out of five
Enjoyed it. First time sitting down and truly focusing on a fleet foxes record.
Really nice, soothing and chill
so frog and toad!
I feel like this is an album I would love if I had discovered it before this generator. The thing about the generator is that I rarely feel the need the listen again, because I simply do not have time compared to the vast and endless hours of music on here. This is one of (admittedly few, so far) albums I will consider revisiting after I finish the list. Right now, however, it did not particularly grip me but I can recognise it has interesting, well-crafted gospel-tinged indie-folk-pop melodies. 7/10
Whimsical. Delicate. Somber. Earthy
nice enough bonus points for the album cover
Love this album! it really gives off that vibe of walking in nature.
Really good, instruments are very folksy and make me feel like a 1600s peasant picking grain
Real pretty
never willingly even had the thought of listening to folk. honestly, it's pretty freaking good. Favorite is definitely track 2, White Winter Hymnal
7/10 White Winter Hymnal is amazing. in a less than generous word: twee. The distortion is the same in every song. I like it, all of it. It soars when it works, and when it doesn't, it is still a warm sweater of an album. The songs belong in as many indie films as they can fit in. 2-22-2024
Røv lækkert, faderen, akustisk, lidt middelalder er der da
Definitely heard “White Winter Hymnal”. Kind of sounds like the influence for bands like The Lumineers and Mumford and Sons. Great folk and easy listening. This album still holds up over 15 years after it’s released.
Lovely. Harmonies. Recognised a few. Would listen again.
Nice modern Country band.
Я прослушала этот альбом лишь немного, но он мне нравится. Я с нетерпением жду возможности услышать больше.
A truly excellent electric folk-pop album. I loved the vocals, and I thought the harmonies were mixed perfectly. I thought the band had a beautiful, unified sound where every so often one or more of the instruments would surface for a little moment to themselves. Overall, excellent album and I can see why some people hailed it as the best debut album ever. My favorite songs were White Winter Hymnal, Quiet Houses, and Oliver James
Fuck me why are all the good ones after the 1001?! 5 4 It's a good song. But god I'm tired of White Winter Hymnal
I’d never heard of this group/album before….. what a surprise!
A nice album. I already knew White Winter Hymnal but only because Pentatonix covered it.
Instrumentally, 5 stars. Not crazy about the vocals but really looking forward to seeing them live in a couple months. 4 stars in general.
Something about this album - maybe how they harmonize - I absolutely love. I can always sit through it.
I LOVE me some folky indie shiz
This was smooth. I liked it
Very nice sound. Great harmony
7.5/10
Really enjoyed this. Need to listen again more closely. Right up my alley.
Pleasantly surprised by this album. Pretty, mellow indie rock with catchy melodies.
7.5/10 - 4/5 Excellent harmonies. Really woodsy, warm vibe. This should be the soundtrack to the Wildwood movie. There were some great moments throughout.
Right up my alle- kind of background music which is not a diss from me. I'll definitely add this to my journal/early morning rotation.
Great album, but it does require a certain mood.
"white winter hymnal" <3
Holy shit. I loved this. It was so close to a masterpiece. Beautiful music - there's no other way to describe it. What holds it back, I felt, is the album kinda runs out of steam near the end, with the last three songs being the worst on the record. Fleet Foxes clearly established "their sound" over the first 8 brilliant tracks, but possibly went back to the same well too many times. Even so, not bad. Was "Ragged Wood" released as a single? If it was, I totally missed it. If not, why the fuck not?! Class tune that's right up there with "White Winter Hymnal". 👌 What a band. I'll definitely be checking out their other albums. Honestly, I can't believe I haven't before now; this is my kind of music. 👌 👍👍
Slower first couple of tracks before the tempo (and mood) picks up with Ragged Wood. Lots of more contemplative folksy parts which don't all grab me, but Blue Ridge Mountains is charming. Overall it's quite playful and uplifting.
Not bad at all. It didn’t quite reach my expectations, but I enjoyed it. Each song was equally good, so it’s hard to choose favourites. 8/10 Top 3: 1. Your Protector 2. Ragged Wood 3. Sun It Rises
A very lovely album that I never really got into at the time but grows on me even more every time I hear it. I’m tempted to say it’s my favourite album of theirs but they’re actually incredibly consistent
Great album, so many good songs that I keep coming back to.
Really well produced and relaxing with headphones on. I did enjoy these at their peak but always a band I forget about. Well worth playing again
lmao I have this shit on vinyl! Kinda surprised to see this here. I discovered this album through "White Winter Hymnal" when I was in, like 6th grade. I absolutely love that song and it's been in my regular rotation ever since. At that time I was sailing the digital seas with my friend Dan Carroll so I had access to the whole album, too, which makes this a nostalgic trip. Normally I find this style of music to be boring and I think if I were to discover this album today I would think so too, but this predates my venture into metal so I hadn't had my shit rocked quite yet. Anyway enough about my nostalgia. The album itself has a nice sound to it that I don't indulge in often enough. I think there's a pop sensibility on this album that the group sort of loses in later albums (yes I keep up). Amazing harmonies and musicianship on display here. Very much enjoyed this re-listen 4
I struggled to find the words to describe my feelings about this album. It was really good. Hopefully I can safely steal someone else's description here: "Haunting, majestic, uplifting - like watching the sun rise over a mountain, gradually spreading light over the rocky crags and dissipating the frigid mist." Yeah. It's atmospheric and has a fresh, oldey-time-folk sound, almost implying a sort of medieval fantasy setting (especially given the album cover). It would've been fun to hear them lean into that idea more. The instruments are played well but not virtuosically. The choir-like harmonies are consistently gorgeous. The band's sound is good but not very distinctive.
Lush indie folk. Good for relaxing chore time.
the vocal harmonies are EXCELLENT!! i'm glad i had my country music phase a few months ago so now i can appreciate this more. can definitely hear the shared influences between this and hozier's stuff. excellent background instrumentation. favorite songs: sun it rises, ragged wood, heard them stirring
it is good. I hate father John Misty and this reminds me of his existence. Otherwise good stuff
Such a pretty album. This is just the loveliest singing and harmony. Choral folk, but somehow not at all corny. Genuinely pretty as fuck.
Entertaining background music
Great harmonization and sound scapes
It's not something I would normally put on, but it is just a treat for the ears. The harmonies, the vibe, the whole sound. wow. It's special. makes me want to live in a cabin in the woods and frolic in the woods
Nice muxed genre niche
What a stunningly beautiful album. Fleet Foxes moves from music you’d hear on the American frontier to music for a beautiful winter walk thru the forest to music that could have come from the renaissance. 8.5/10
Good background listen, very polished, nothing to listen to ever and ever again, might get boring after a while.
How did I go this long without listening to the original version of White Winter Hymnal. What the fuck. Anyways, this was nice and Sun It Rises was the other highlight of the album.
знаю другой их альбом, ощущение что кармически знаю и этот. хороший) надо продолжить изучать
Good vibes. Don't think I'd listen on repeat though, kind of repetitive.
A good chillaxing album. Pretty standard Indie rock.
I know this one well. Some nice standouts, solid playthrough for a beautiful winter day like today Top: Tiger peasant mountain song White winter hymnal Doesn't include the Mykonos EP
Nice to relisten to this classic for the first time in over a decade.
Easy listening. Clear vocals. Progressive folk sound. Kind of a cross between Grateful Dead and String Cheese Incident. Worth vinyl purchase.
Started out strong. Like the indy rock/folk vibe. Faded a little in the middle. Got bored by the end.
an all time landmark in nap music
soft, folksy acoustic
Blue Ridge Mountains, beautiful
Classic I love the tones the lyrics the major scale folky riffs it’s like old ballads put through a zen blender.
4.4
seems fine
Sun It Rises - Beautiful harmonies and an cappella, unedited sound in the opening White Winter Hymnal - I recognize this opening … I like the vocal harmonies paired with a simple instrumental. Very nice motif built on since the beginning. This song made me very happy. Ragged Wood - Uptempo, definitely has a 2000s indie feel. Like the unexpected tempo/feel change in the middle. Tiger Mountain Peasant Song - Beautiful guitar. Sounds like Square by Mitski Beautiful album
Musik zum Runterfahren.
An album with an amazing cover that the more that you see it, the more you find. All of the songs are impressively involvent, make you feel in a hole scenario into the woods, dancing around in circles or just laying down in the grass. With a lot of changing rhytms in every song that makes you think is another song.
So looking forward to listening to an entire album from this band. Lovely. Not perfect, but pretty and unique
Hipsters probably fuck to this.
This was one was fun. Folky and low-key. Very my vibe. Reminds me of Iron and Wine or Paper kites.
tiger mountain peasant song very chilled
Beautiful earthy album, always reminded me of The Band, particularly Richard Manuel’s tracks. A real ethereal other worldly quality, like I’m living in a forest in the winter chopping wood for the fire and technology doesn’t exist. It’s a nice place to go away to for a while. The harmonies are angelic, the instrumentation is gentle. An excellent debut.
Sensación de ya conocer todo y nada a la vez. That 2010's folk feeling.
this album was very pleasant and enjoyable! i listened to it twice through and had a great time. to be honest, none of the songs particularly stuck out to me or sounded terribly unique within the context of the rest of the album, but i liked their one song well enough :) favorites: sun it rises, white winter hymnal, blue ridge mountains
I love folk music and so I expected to wholeheartedly love this and I didn't quite. There were a few I liked a lot (Ragged Wood, Sun It Rises), but I think this leaned a little more pop than I wanted it to. Folk music usually feels very emotionally and musically rich to me, and this didn't quite reach that. But I did enjoy listening to it as a whole.
I enjoyed it, it is a shame Mykonos isn’t on this album. I always liked white winter hymnal, I used to wonder what the lyrics mean, I remember seeing an interview with them where they said the lyrics are basically meaningless
A pleasant listen. "White Winter Hymnal" was in my heavy rotation when this album debuted and it's still an essential song for me. Interesting to find it cast as a Christmas song on holiday music lists I've read this year. I get a winter solstice, darkness night of the year vibe from the tune.
Good ! But a touch samey in the arrangements. But good.
Very good. I could definitely get into this band.
A solid album. Not great by any means but an honest and good effort.
"White Winter Hymnal" and "Ragged Wood" are beautiful singles. The whole album is a wonderful mix of folk and traditional singing in rounds. Lovely, relaxing but not sleepy music.
Oh so indie
Despite the album being 15 years old, I find it musically very current and enjoyable to listen to
Always enjoyed when Fleet Foxes comes on WXRT (especially White Winter Hymnal) but never listened to a whole album, glad I did! Lovely harmonies, very enjoyable sound and will listen again.
Damn, this is really neat.
Indie music you could hang in an art museum – I am firmly in the more abrasive, uptempo, guitar-driven camp when it comes to music taste, but can't deny my love for this LP and Pecknold's overall work with Fleet Foxes. Not only can the man compose near-orchestral level tracks that still allow each (beautiful) instrumental to shine through, but his touch for key modulation is some of the best I've ever heard. Every time I've heard a FF song effortlessly shift from triumphant meadow singalong to desolate, wrought fugue and vice vice versa I cannot only believe how effortlessly the band pulls it off, but that I didn't think of it first. There's a ground-level sense of organic creation here, as if Pecknold isn't writing these tracks so much as showing off a cool collection of sounds and ideas he found in the forest. I get the complaints about length and things getting rather abstruse at times (even as a fan I can stomach only so much choir-like singing), but if that's the price of entry it's well worth it just to hear what comes next.
I really enjoyed listening to this album, the songs were very nice and chill
Excellent
Pretty vibey style, guitar and piano with a slower tempo. Good lyrics on some of the songs I've seen so far. I feel like I wanted to say something more and more specific, but I've fallen and I can't remember.
It seems that they're really influenced by Beach Boys. I like it cuz it's organic.
Sun it Rises - 4/5 Decent folk song, road trip montage type beat. White Winter Hymnal - 4.5/5 A very cozy song, don't know how to describe it further. Ragged Wood - 4/5 Very upbeat and energetic compared to the previous. I like it. Weaker 2nd half. Tiger Mountain Peasant Song - 2.5/5 Meh, not much going on musically. Vocals carry. Quiet Houses - 2.5/5 Repetitive lyrics, but carried by a great vocal performance and a nice beat. He Doesn't Know Why - 3/5 Very triumphant sounding. Heard Them Stirring - 3.5/5 A somber song with a lot of soul, no lyrics no problem. Your Protector - 4.5/5 Very beautiful start, builds into yet again a very soothing folk song. Meadowlarks - 3/5 A much more reserved song, it's fine. Musically engaging nonetheless. Blue Ridge Mountains - 5/5 I am ill equipped to describe this types of music-- it's just a very pleasant vibe that just excels, with unique and powerful sections throughout the song. Oliver James - 2.5/5 Decent, albeit a bit empty. Overall thoughts: Did not think I would really enjoy folk music but this ended up being very pleasant and cozy. Came out swinging with the first few songs. For a debut album this was surprisingly solid and there weren't any songs I was bored listening to, didn't overstay its welcome.
Sun It Rises - 3.75/5 i LIKE IT White Winter Hymnal - 4.25/5 actually really good Ragged Wood - 3.8/5 Tiger Mountain Peasant Song - 2.8/5 much too simple, needs bass Quiet Houses - 2.5/5 extremely repetitive He Doesn't Know Why - 3.2/5 Heard Them Stirring - 3.2/5 Your Protector - 4.08/5 Meadowlarks - 3.7/5 Blue Ridge Mountains - 4.5/5 holy shit zack bryan?? Oliver James - 3/5 Good album. Completely torn between 3/5, and 4/5 overall, but leaning towards 4 because was very well crafted together and had some really good moments

I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the... Indie tíminn var svo kósý. Man-buns og skegg. Hipp og kúl að drekka IPA og margar góðar hljómsveitir komu fram. Þessi plata er virkilega vönduð og raunar ólík þessu stereótýpíska indie rokki, enda eins og hljómsveitin hafi ákveðið að semja pjúra folk plötu með nútímatwisti. Fílaða. Stutt og laggott.
so beautiful, harmonium vibes, i would have appreciated less reverb-y moments maybe tho
I love Fleet Foxes. The harmonies, the echo-y singer songwriter shit. I prefer Helplessness Blues to this one.
I've listened to this album so many times the songs are starting to lose some appeal. Still really enjoy it though, one of my favorites from that era - "Ragged Wood" - all time banger
Had this on repeat when it first came out. Still excellent road trip music.
Liked this, especially the peasant one, track 3 or 4. Folks but a little bit different. The other way round to some of the more recent offerings, in that first bit was dodgy, then came good. Think I'll let it just scrape a 4.
Every generation gets the CSN it deserve. Those who got FFs should consider themselves quite fortunate as this is interesting and elevating, fresh and original, thoughtful and often lovely, even soothing at times. One will never forget hearing "White Winter Hynmal" for the first time and it's not lost much of that impact or purity. it feels almost good for you to listen to it. The band may not have grown a lot on last several releases, but what they do, they do extremely well – and more wholesome-seemingly and affectingly than others in their peer group.
After I decided to make peace with the music of my generation (thanks to AF), I decided to get into as much indie music as possible, so of course I listened to this record back in the day, of course I talked about it during those endless nights at my out of town buddy’s apartment with his too cool for school roommates along to likes of Beirut and others, but I guess I wasn’t enough into it to listen again in full after those days were over. Today the vocals sounded a bit out there for me but it was a nice moment and a good throw back. Note apart for that Tiger Mountain Song. I do listen to it quite often and I actually think it’s one of the greatest things I ever heard. God I miss those days.
I'm familiar with some of their songs - very easy to listen to in one go over a walk
Great for a rainy Sunday afternoon. Favorite track: "He doesn't know why". Beautiful melody.
Really enjoyed this. It's white boy folk but it's also psychedelic and sounds good as hell after a fat blunt. Spacey, heady folk shit. Pretty.
Classic indie folk. They kind of do it the best.
Awesome. Not entirely my style preference, but I can imagine being inspired to play this album again on a quiet Sunday morning or if I had friends over and was feeling a little pretentious.
Blue Ridge Mountains and White Winter Hymnal are hauntingly beautiful.
Hørt ikke hele, men ælska d æ hørt. Rolig chill fint
Nice polite and satisfying
All around really solid. They never quite click with my sensibility on the level of forming an strong emotional connection to the music but I can't find much to actually fault.
A pleasant, well constructed album that’s a breath of fresh air after the string of recent picks we’ve had. These guys were huge at the turn of the decade but never really listened to them. Now they’ve been completely overshadowed by their drummer. Some of it is a bit too whimsical and soft for my taste but it’s a solid and thoughtful. Your Protector was my favorite.
I might be biased by emotion since I do have such good memories of singing some of these with the Axies and night owls, but I love that this album has such beautiful harmonies but still maintains some of the intensity of a rock band.
Perfect album for spooky season
Simply wonderful
Amazing album. One of my favorites. Chamber pop with gorgeous harmonies. Your protector, blue ridge mountains, tiger mountain, etc are all amazing. I always associate the EP as part of this album too. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could
