Reviews (page 10 of 13)
This was a good album with a fantastic opening track.
"Roundabout" is a long time favorite of mine!! "We Have Heaven" stands out to me as well but the instrumentals at the end of the album go on for a bit too long in my opinion.
Fine
There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Is Yes good? Sure. Do they have to show off how good they are on every song? Probably not. They are jamming 10 lbs of notes into a 5 lbs bag.
This was good but not great. Have you ever tried to recreate an amazing meal? You use all of the same ingredients. Same everything... but something just isn't right. Me too, Yes. Me too.
Yes is on my mind a lot. The base, the harmonics, the voice, the fact that I sing roundabout, sometimes out loud, every time I take a roundabout.
I really like the acoustic interludes in some of the songs. Roundabout is definitely the highlight of the album.
Wel aardig
“Roundabout” and “Long Distance Runaround” feel like the standout tracks here. If there were more like them, the album would approach excellence for me. But this album doesn’t want to be a pristine, well manicured collection of songs. There are oddball prog experiments and nerdy diversions into medieval-influenced folk in addition to the more elaborate numbers. And I find that loose, scattershot approach kind of charming. The album makes for a surprising, active listen. Side note: I’ve always loved the indie band Grizzly Bear and thought of them as being a bit prog-rock. The more bands like Yes that I listen to from this list reaffirms that label. I’m enjoying listening to bands that my favorite bands were influenced by.
What a great opener- not even a minute in and you get this whole little landscape of sounds, and tones. The synths at 1:30 are really special too; to me it sounds like they are coming into your ears and saying "oh btw we got fancy synths coming too!". I've written a lot on here about how I like the "track 2" of most rock albums to be an upbeat one but I like how this one is not as prog-crazy as the first track. It's a nice relief after the very energetic first song. I really appreciate how cinematic and dark the piano part is on track 4, "South Side of the Sky" and how it goes from classical into a bluesy/jazzy/chromatic tonality towards the middle of the song. It's a cool evolution. I love this album cover. It's like a world from a Final Fantasy game. Nice album. It's not my favorite genre but I think i'm fairly weighing my own personal tastes into these so this one is a 3/5. Roundabout is a classic but none of the other tracks are at that level in my opinion.
3,5
If you'll excuse me, I need to go airbrush a wizard on the side of a van.
No really my thing
I'm going to go for Topographic Oceans as the ultimate yes album over this, though Roundabout is an absolute banger. Very listenable, though ultimately not my kind of thing.
3 stars - not usually a fan of prog that much but this is a good album.
Roundabout is obviously a powerhouse of a tune. Rest of the album is a bit too much. Strong closing track though.
The songs are fairly well written but the production and mixing is so flat and lifeless.
I won't lie, I kind of laughed upon hearing the bass riff in Roundabout mainly because I wasn't expecting it. Love the instrumentals and vocals. Fave track(s): Roundabout
Great musicianship! Innovative solos etc! Cool analog synths! The cover version of America was really interesting. Def enjoyable though not super inspiring to me.
Better than I thought, cool Bass throughout
so so so much better than I expected and the sole reason is that the songs are a regular length. everything that works about yes works, except nothing is 10 minutes long. Best tracks: roundabout, long distance runaround, south side of the sky
aight
roundabout is a cool song the rest are meandering jam band rock songs
Didn't enjoy this very much. First album getting a three in a long time. Think i got a case of listening fatigue.
Not for me but not bad. There was a riff in Mood for a Day that I really liked.
More psychedelic rock I'm just getting sick of it I keep switching to metal after. Can we get a change please
Progressiivisen rockin parhautta. Rentoa ja miellyttävää
Like it more than I thought.
idk
I don't care for the incessant noodling and I tend to zone out during the longer tracks, but maybe there are enough interesting bits and pieces here to warrant a 3. They got the formula just right with Long Distance Runaround - it's inventive and technical and weird but with accessible hooks. Good job their butchering of 'America' isn't part of the original release though as I'd be forced to knock this down to a 2...
My first Yes record, not,bad.
Alright
3.5 Very good
I'm into prog usually, but this one was kinda just average to me. Roundabout is a banger, but the album kinda dragged for most of it. Standouts: Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround
Great fun
There are quite a few aspects that are enjoyable on this album. The opening track, Roundabout, was a solid start. The crunchier guitar sounds of South Side Of The Sky work for me. The vocals on Long Distance Runaround hit the spot. Surrounding all these moments are superfluous forays to newt explored sounds. I’m not a fan of the repeated chanting in We Have Heaven nor The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus). Cans And Brahms and Five Percent For Nothing are all fine and good, but not what I’m looking for on a rock album. And this is where I come to the realization that prog rock has some experimental parallels to improvisational jazz, which I’ve established that I despise. Prog rock is a genre I can generally listen to, while some I love, but I’m turned off by the more varied experimental versions of it.
Proficient yet pretty inaccessible to me. These guys are obviously great musicians but I didnt really feel anything listening to this. Close to the Edge is better.
Exhausting
Have been looking for an excuse to listen to this album for a really long time, but it sort of failed to live up to my expectations of it. Lot of “Journey/Foreigner” vibes that I can’t really get on board with. Really loved all of the instrumentation though, and the last track was an undeniable banger.
First song was good. Groovy
Everytime I was starting to get into it, they went in another direction.
ok. sem muitos comentarios
I like "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" Yes more than I like "Roundabout" Yes which is probably a sin, but it is what it is. I find myself enjoying some of the breakdowns in this album more than the rest of the song. No doubt the instrumentation is impressive on a lot of the songs too, but when it comes to repeated listening this isn't an album I would find myself going back to. I think it's the "minstreliness" of some Yes records I just can't get behind.
songs are either very long or very short jojo reference
That was a tasty sandwich! Wait, the song is still playing? Does it really take 8+ minutes to tell a story through song? Or have we gotten to the point in civilization where we can't pay attention for more than 4 minutes?
My dad loves this band. The song Roundabout is good but it doesn't really resonate. I feel like "you had to be there". Chaotic, just like Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The track lengths are strange: 11 minutes, 8, 8, 3, 3, 2 and 30 seconds.
Extremely prog so take that either way.
Rock progresivo. Ni fu ni fa.
Meh.
Good but not my jam
Standard Prog Rock fare, nothing too mind blowing. Reminds me of a gateway to jam bands
Full disclosure: I did not listen to the deluxedition. And I will never do so unless I love this. Strong start. I could listen to Roundabout several more times. That bass work, brother. Jeez. And yeah, okay, yeah, sure, yeah, this is fine, this is just fine! Just fine indeed! Every song is either pretty snappy or good background. I'll go along with this, sure! Not listening to the deluxedition though.
-S Tier- Roundabout South Side of the Sky Long Distance Runaround -A Tier- *none* -B Tier- The Fish -C Tier- Mood for a Day -D Tier- Heart of the Sunrise America AVG SCORE: 3.14 / 5 (Note: any track under 2min doesn’t get counted) - - - Always a fan of Roundabout and Long Distance Runaround, I got a thrill out of South Side of the Sky and even enjoyed The Fish. The rest of the album was a tad masturbatory for me.
Best Song: Roundabout. A song I'd heard the opening riff to without realizing it. This feels like a prime example of the best elements of this era of classic rock: broad, sweeping, with every instrument (including keys) given an opportunity to stand out. Worst Song: America. Too long, with that prog-rock tendency to never stay long enough on a particular musical theme for it to make an impact. Overall: The music feels thoughtfully produced and technically impressive, but, like a lot of classic rock, favours grandiosity and scope over passion and soul.
Kinda genre defying. So many strange instrument solos. Oddly, kinda works...
It's a fun listen, i have to say, but too busy to put on most days, for my liking. I do enjoy the funky baselines. And there's a weird musical theatre intermezzo somewhere? Interesting.
Right here is the part where I hate the fact it’s only 5 stars. Because this album is not “average” to get a 3 but I don’t quite think I’d give it a 4 which puts me in a compromising position. 7/10. The intertwined short songs were meh but the actual songs were very good.
This review will be continued. Favorites: Roundabout, Heart of the Sunrise
jojo
I just can't get into Yes
Good! one song i repeated.
Finally! What goes after all these "to be continued" memes are revealed! And it's basically what happens when an acoustic guitar tries to do something prog. Ambitious yes. Complex and nice musicianship yes. But enjoyable? Naaaah.
yes - fragile (1971) notes - prog rock, quite theatrical - bill bruford of king crimson on drums :D - mix of 8 minute songs and 1-2minute interludes - THE BASS ON THIS ALBUM fav song - roundabout - i mean, how could it not be - 10/10 song least fav - cans and brahms - would have been better later in the album - killed the momentum of runaround 3/5
Nice fun album, though a bit too much of the same near the end
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Roundabout (1) 2 - Heart of the Sunrise (9) 3 - Mood for a Day (8)
Well - at times it feels like it’s interesting - a bit Beatle-sque and of course quite a vlrtuoso album it being prog and all. There seems to be an indication I might have warmed up to this album after a few repeated lístens but this exercise is not kind to long and difficult records. I might revisit this album just to give it a fair chance in the future - but in the long train of daily records - there are more deserving examples of better albums.
Roundabout is great, the rest a bit meh.
Was good but not punky or hardcore enough
Better then their last album, has one of my all time favorite songs in roundabout but it’s still just ok. The whole 70s rock genre is just not my bag
Great instrumental parts here!
not my style
Love Yes, this album is pretty awesome. Roundabout is iconic, weird to hear the whole song and not just the drop in the beginning lol
Yes is one of those prog-rock bands that you can get away listening to with friends in the car. They're baroque and weird, but they have little pop-rock moments. Roundabout is the most famous song off of Fragile, but it's not my most favorite. Heart of the Sunrise, however, feels like the climax and best part of the album. Overall, Yes is really an acquired taste that I don't expect everyone to immediately enjoy.
Props to Jo-Jo’s for using roundabout to end every episode
На удивление альбом не запомнился. Хотя здесь и есть Roundabout. Вторая половина ещё интереснее звучит, первую совсем не запомнил, кроме заглавного трека.
The best thing about this album was the heavy use of psychedelic keyboards, thankfully they quickly replaced the guy who didn't want to play them initially. You would hardly realise that there were several songs that were arranged by individual members alone, in order to cut studio costs, Yes, flows with such ease. Best: Roundabout Worst: Mood For A Day
Eh
Very interesting. Never heard of them before but very nice to listen to. Not sure why I keep getting albums from the 70's though. How old was this book anyways?
Wonderful musicians who are just jamming out. No attention is paid to the listener, there are no catchy hooks or melodies. They seem to be very attached to the same few overly-dissonent chord progressions and time signatures. Being different is cool, but I feel like this band tries too hard to avoid meaningful riffs, and when they do play something cool it's forgotten about 5 seconds later.
This album reminds me of elevator music in that I have definitely heard these songs as elevator music.
Really eclectic. Liked parts of it but wasn't enamored with it, on the whole.
Lengthy
Is it prog rock? Is it glam? Classical? Classic rock? Free form jazz? Do I care? I think there was a sea shanty in there. Obviously, the answer is Yes.
I liked it but didn't love it. Roundabout is definitely the best track on here.
Pompous, overblown and very much of the time. Nevertheless it is a good set of songs and the musicianship is strong.
good prog
Didn’t feel the classical reimagining was needed, plenty of great original tracks here, hugely influential too.
Not bad, but not for me.
Prog Rock eh! Now when my more "Intellectual" mates were raving about this and other prog product, I tried but never really understood it. I was into the Jackie Lynton Band, Dr Feelgood and Kilburn & The High Roads at the time. Retrospectively I can see credit in the album, back in the day I liked "Roundabout" and it is still my favourite on the album today.
Listened to on 4/20/22 2/5 Favorite song: roundabout I either liked or very much so disliked every song depending on the level of weird techno noises but I’d play it in the background
Very interesting 70’s album. I’ll probably say 3 rather than 4 just because a lot of the music is a bit lengthy for me to listen to again and didn’t love love it. Fun to listen to once though.
Yes! hmmm
Rather enjoyed this.
Between a 3 and a 4 for me. Some of the best of Prog Rock and some of it's more annoying tendencies as well. But I'd listen to it again before that last Neil Young album.
It's fine. I like the singles. But like most prog rock, I find many of the songs go on too long, and it's too confusiong for me.
Decent album, just not a lot on it for me. i have other rock albums that i like better
I recognize the first song although I'm not completely familiar with it. Cool vibes so far. I like it! I will definitely give this album another listen. Has lots of potential to be an album/band that I will enjoy that I did not know before this.
There are some fine songs on this but the band hasn't really hit their stride yet imo. Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround and Heart of Sunrise are quite good. Back in the day I recall Howe's use of harmonics at the beginning of Roundabout had everyone awe struck. They aren't really hard to play especially if you have the luxury of multiple takes. Nonetheless they sure were fun. If this was the first rock recording then it's quite the legacy since they continued for many years - e.g. at the start of Neil's Harvest Moon. Rick Wakeman doesn't take long to make his presence known with the excellent keyboards jumping in in the first minute of Roundabout and his solo around the 6 minute mark. As much as I liked Wakeman's keyboards on Life on Mars, he was much more in his element with Yes and Bowie was arguably better served by Mike Garson. Nice to see a win win. Like Wakeman, Howe and Squires are quite capable players. Squires shows this on Long Distance Runaround and elsewhere. Heart of Sunrise starts great but they seem to go back to the well on the one cool riff about twenty times too many resulting in the three minute into being 2 1/2 minutes too long. I prefer Yes' post Bruford era since Alan White hit the drums very well. I never really liked Anderson's high pitched voice. It seemed to fit with the prog rock of the day but it's kinda irritating.
The issue I've had with Yes in the past is that they just don't flow. In this case, following up Roundabout with two 1 minute and change songs is jarring. One has to ask "why"? Such is the nature of Prog-rock I guess, especially in 1970. Compared to the stuff being released by Genesis or ELP around that time, you'd probably give the nod to YES as a band with greater long-term potential, based on this LP. The musicianship is great. Jon Anderson's alto voice, I like more now than I did back in the 70s. Lyrically I'm still not a fan "The music dance and sing, They make the children really ring". Really ring? "Heart of the Sunrise" is epic and genre defining, making the first and last songs on the original LP great and the rest not so much. Fortunately, the original did not include Paul Simon's America, so listening to Jon Anderson sing about the New Jersey Turnpike is, thankfully, optional!
lol :) ----> hooop
nice jojo's reference an enjoyable prog rock journey, but not all too memorable for me
I probably would have enjoyed this more if I was in the right mood.
Rating system (Most of these albums are shoo-in 5-star albums for anyone “into” the genre they represent, my system is trying to avoid all 5-star reviews and break them down to represent my tastes. This is subjective and supposed to be fun, and some of these are snap judgements/hot takes after listening to an album once.): * Why is this even on here/DNF ** Album with artistic merit, but not my jam. Will probably not listen to again without prompting. ***Solid album, would listen to again. Some significant flaws for me to fully enjoy as a “full album.” Most albums will be in this category, as it’s the legit average. ****Almost flawless album, only one misstep in tracklisting or small engineering quibbles. *****Flawless album, one of my favorites, owning is required. This was an album my parents had when I was a wee tot and was always put off by only because of the cover. It looked hard and complicated, and of course, I was not wrong (especially for a 6-year-old). I have of course heard “Roundabout” in the album edit, but most of the rest of the tracks skipped my notice, because I didn’t really get into prog and jazz until my 20s. It’s hard to unpack everything that is going on in this in one listen, but the Moog work and all the solos are delightful. The vaguely sci-fi beats and the reworking of romantic era music, as well as hints of blues (in the intro to Heart of the Sunrise) and baroque power pop (pretty much the whole bridge of America, my favorite Simon & Garfunkel song) make this such a fun listen. I don’t have as much fondness for this as for some Genesis and King Crimson works but will deepen and grow over time.
Maybe.
OK, this one is bookended by two nice tracks, "Roundabout", and "Heart Of The Sunrise", which somehow reminded me of The Mars Volta without the hard rock and post-hardcore influence, obviously. But just like with The Mars Volta, the line between genuinely propulsive or epic moments and technical self-indulgence for the sake of it is sometimes very thin. I can go "wow" and "meh" in the space of a few seconds. A very odd experience. Besides, the rest of the album is *very* uneven, even by the usual seventies prog-rock standards naturally allowing a lot of space for digressions. Half of those tracks actually sound like interludes. And even the ones that don't seem to lead nowhere, except for the next track, which in its turn leads nowhere. I was amazed at the lack of *substance* displayed by this record. I've then read the band put it together in a quick way, with some members doing their stuff on the side before patching things together. Which explains a lot of what I'm feeling here. I remember giving Genesis a 2/5 recently. Should I rate this record with the same number, or a 3? 2.5? Beats me. The cut-and-paste approach slightly works better on this one, because some of the jams are really impressive and lively (and the whole thing is not weighed down by the laughable pretentiousness of Peter Gabriel and co.). Yet I can't help feeling Yes is slightly overrated, even today. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 959 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 18 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 8 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 13 Albums I might not be the best person to judge, but that I *might* include in my final list: 3 (including this one)
3.5
Do you want to listen to Prog Rock today? ———> Yes
Pretty funny to get this right after the Simon and Garfunkel album that features America on it. Not bad as far as Yes-style prog-rock albums go. Doesn't go too off the rails with its synthy blasts. Still, missing a certain something that all albums like this seem to be missing. Idk what it is exactly. It doesn't really justify its existence.
This is the second \"Yes\" album in about a week. I liked this one better than the last one. It seemed a bit more structured and cohesive.
Pretty good, not amazing
maybe checking this album out while I was working was a bad idea but it was super jumbled and distracting. that's prog for ya. there were definitely some very groovy moments in here though. perhaps the setting was wrong for this listen but I didn't love it as much as the yes album.
Pop con toques psicodélicos. Voz con timbre de voz peculiar. Algo de sintetizadores y de guitarreo.
Couple of tracks I just had to skip because they were annoying to listen to. I did overall appreciate and enjoy the album though.
Insanely average is the only way I can describe this one. Some spectacular lead guitar, but a lot of the melodies are all over the place. Songs that outlast their welcome as well.
Ridículo.
Roundaboot
Great tunes
6/10
Kreativ!
Die Jungs haben ihr Ding gemacht und dabei auch ein paar nette Songs geschrieben
Great bass. Nice vibes. I would listen again
I'll be the roundabout The words and music will be pretty way out
Liked this one..
Pretty sweet album. Really enjoyed the instrumentation.
Brings back some great memories. Love Wakeman's keys prowess on full exhibition. A number of the cuts I didn't recall though have recorded this album to cassette and listed to it a lot back in the day.
jag har bara lyssnat på 90125 innan. ser nu att bandet släppt typ elva hundra album och deras tidslinje verkar vara mer komplicerad än terminators??
Ok progbrick. 3.5 and rounding down because I’m just feeling a 4 today.
Nice early prog but a little poppy for me. Great basslines giving me Rush vibes.
hard for any song to compete with roundabout, not really a whole album experience for me
2.8
Roundabout is one of the best songs ever made. The next four tracks pale in comparison. Long Distance Runaround is decent. This band is great with those classical guitar riffs. I would rather listen to Roundabout on repeat than much else from this album, but that song alone gives this album 3 stars.
Ultimately not my taste - but I can appreciate the craft and care that went into this record
It was different than I expected, such as the straight-up classical song toward the beginning! Some tracks were a bit too long for my taste, but I liked it quite a bit. 3.5
Roundabout is great. The rest is just prog rock for me. Not a bad thing by any means, but not exceptional. Yesterday, I told somebody that Roundabout is the best song that I never remember exists.
Classic, Yes. Roundabout is one of the best songs ever. Standouts: Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround, America
An intense listen!
Eclectic but a hard listen
Classic. 3/5.
Good stuff that seems marred to me by way too much excessive guitar noodleism, though as with some jazz I am stuck wondering if I am playing the role of well meaning but doltish Emperor Joseph II protesting "too many note!" Possibly too lowbrow for prog rock.
Not really for me - a bit rambling, and definitely sounds dated now.
Pleasant.
Get's an extra star because of the JoJo's song
iconic roundabout tune, stylistically reminds me of supertramp its alright
Pretty good prog. Probably my favorite Yes album. Roundabout is a classic. 6-7/10
Prog Rock, get's a little long at times but quality music.
It wasn't too bad but I got tired by the end. While a few songs were nice, too many piercing tones made it really hard to enjoy all the way through.
Klinkt naar soft rock het heeft leuke en vervelende kanten
i don't hate this as much as the rest of you but they could definitely use some editing can hear the influence they had on later prog/psychedelic also i read some of the wikipedia article and they kicked their keyboardist out for not using enough keyboards lmao like almost all prog rock, this would be way more fun live and perhaps also stoned
Someone took acid at the RenFaire, and why does the cover of America exist? Don't think i'll be revisiting anytime soon
The points go to the first and last tracks. Overall an underwhelming title. There's some interesting sounds and techniques here and there like the carnival / waltz 2nd track and the latin influence later in the album, but it seems like they put all their creative genius into the first and last tracks.
Roundabout
To be continued meme is first song. Abit of a bop.
3/5
This was quite a journey. If this is the definition of prog rock then I think prog rock is very silly while playing off as very sincere. I see how this informs a lot of music I do like that comes later but this record goes in a lot of directions, not all of which are good.
Overall, I wasn’t a big fan for the first half of the album, but once I got to the middle, my mind really changed. I think the album in general was ahead of its time, but some of the songs don’t have a huge replay effect for me. I will say that I’m overall impressed with the last half of the album though. This half sounds the most modern to me, and has more replay ability. I also can hear how this band may have influenced others that came after it in the last half. I will say that I much preferred songs that were mostly, if not all instrumental. I didn’t enjoy the singing that much for some reason. I liked Roundabout, but it also reminded me of a meme, so it was hard to enjoy it without just thinking of the meme. Another one that I liked was Long Distance Runaround. It felt like it was missing something that I can’t put my finger on though. I almost didn’t add it to my playlist, but started to like it a lot more once the song was almost over. Additionally, I also do think that it sounded ahead of its time as well. The Fish also was surprisingly good. It caught my attention for sure. Mood for a Day’s guitar is really soothing and has Spanish vibes to it (and also Greek vibes??). Metallica’s Battery intro feels similar as well, and I wonder if they were inspired by this track. Heart of the Sunrise is really something else. It’s a song that I haven’t added to my playlist, but one that I think deserves more than one listen. It has some nice riffs in there (once again, I feel like somewhat ahead of its time), albeit quite long. Some parts of the song I liked more than others. America was also surprisingly really good, and deserves another listen. Both this and the previous song are a bit too long for me. Hearing Roundabout for the second time makes me like it a lot more.
Kult, litt alternativt, likte "Roundabout"
La música de Yes es... ¿pretenciosa? What it feels like to get a GTX 1080")
p good
Half of those songs really sucked. The second half of the album was alright? But nah not for me chief
I am unsure on this album. It wasn't great and a lot of the songs sounded the same. Had an unexpected cover of America. No need to willfully listen to this again but I wouldn't ask for it to stop if it were playing.
Banda inglesa de rock progresivo con mucho recorrido desde los años 70 hasta hoy día. Not bad.
Well, now I know where the "To Be Continued..." meme comes from. Thanks Roundabout. Definitely hear some math-rock influence, but I agree with Nick, prog rock has never been my favourite. My experience would have been greatly enhanced by a laser light show haha. Respect it, but probably won't go back to this one. Fav Tracks: Roundabout, Heart of the Sunrise Rating 2.5/5
Another pleasant surprise. Overall, I'm just not that enamored by prog rock, but there's some genuinely moving and creative moments here that I can't really deny. The theatrics can sometimes feel grating, but other times, it all really works. I can feel how this kind of music would weave back into punk to influence math rock/post-rock bands. Can you hear a little Blessed on some of the more guitar-driven tracks? Favourite song: "Heart of the Sunrise"
I liked the first song, but it was too long.
Surprisingly quite enjoyed this. A few bum tracks, but the long proggy ones are pretty fun
Very good musicians but prog music my thing
Proggy AF
Would buy this on vinyl.
Loads of brilliant guitar work.
I still haven't decided if I like Yes. I feel like I like them intellectually, but also maybe just find prog rock to be sort of boring. Makes really nice background music, though. I especially enjoyed the little interludes on this album.
Agréable à écouter
- roundabout, very nice but its a meme now, sorry
Ik heb wel wat met prog en ik vond ik dit best goed te pruimen, alhoewel het een hele zit blijft. Vooral het openingsnummer vond ik erg tof. Duidelijk waar ook een band als Tool zijn inspiratie vandaan heeft.
Pretty good classic rock album. A little out there at times, but a good listen. First track was a familiar one.
3.7 - Better than I expected! Immersive. Even the instrumentals felt vital to the whole.
Pues la verdad es que es rock progresivo y aunque me guste se me hace algo bola. He dudado entre 3 y 4
Probably innovative in 1971... now sounds dated, but still interesting....
songs are either 8 minutes long or a minute. Their song is also used a meme.
This real progressive rock is not my kind of thing (I prefer things less experimental and "low level" like Pink Floyd), however, this album was a good experience.
Roundabout is the best song and most played by far on the album. Incredible bassline. The rest of the songs were almost like experimental jams - some good and some not so much. South Side of the Sky was the second best on the album. 6/10.
Better than expected. I dug the instrumentation, but the shift from really long to really short songs kinda threw me.
Pretty good
Song 1: YES! Every other song: Nope!
Had jojo intro number
I am very confused about what to think of that and whether I liked it or not. It was a bit mad? Certain aspects I enjoyed, others I found just a bit much
Sympa, quelques chansons très cool (roundabout, The Fish ...) mais un peu cacophonique je trouve
3.5
Hot and cold throughout - I liked some of the more experimental moments, and some of the moments of head bobbing grooves. On the other hand there was quite a bit of that late 60s / early 70s idealism that can sound overly twerpy.
very chill
Only song I liked was roundabout. Rest of the album sounded choppy
Álbum experimental que parece que foi feito usando uma roleta.
Enjoyed some of the songs
Hoooly shit. I only know the first song cause of the "To Be Continued" meme that went around a while back, never knew that was Yes. The bass slaps for sure. As far as 70s prog go, it's not bad. Not into the vocal stylings so much. Still nothing I'm that into.
Some great songs. A lot of their stuff sounds similar though.
sim
A weird one - loved the first and last tracks but the rest of it didn't do much for me
roundabout is a meme, interesting mix of short and long songs, good sound but not a lot of jams, the long songs are really long
Just some classic rock
Better than expected but it’s not really rock and roll is it?
It was ok
I struggle with the albums where there's clearly a ton of skill involved, and I'm legitimately very impressed, but none of the music is something I would ever choose to listen to, especially a second time. I guess I'll just plop down a 3 and move on. Best track: Mood for a Day
A bit overblown... but fairly decent!
Pretty lackluster in my opinion, majority of the songs are instrumental, which isn’t bad, it’s just not music taste. Roundabout is the only song that stands out to me on the album, all the others drag on and aren’t really that memorable
Not really my thing
Unquestionable technical skills and impeccably sounding production, but it is only a show-off with no musical / emotional substance.
My SHOCKED face when I heard that first song, 1001 albums you got my ass good. Anyways, the album is nice, I don't have much experience with the genre, not sure what to call it, so for me it sounds similar to things like pink floyd and led zeppelin. But, while I find myself re listening and seeking out those two artists, I don't see myself listening to this album again actively. It doesn't sound bad and it's quite nice but nothing about it reaches out and grabs me. Perhaps once I lose so steam I will enjoy it better
Some sweet instrumentation but melodically not for me
4/10
A solid start... then a bunch of ugh. The final long song has good snippets but overall this album is an odd progrock snore. Top tracks: "Roundabout," "Heart of the Sunrise"
--Roundabout...prog classic. the classical guitar gets a lot of notice but that bass, hot damn --Cans and Brahms...not a prog classic --We Have Heaven...some weird tape looping experiment --South Side of the Sky...listening to this gives me a new appreciation for Ramones. the back half of this rocks a bit --Five per Cent for Nothing...short and odd --Long Distance Runaround...fun interplay between guitar and bass --The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)...there's something sinister about this. I like it --Mood for a Day...classical guitar stuff --Heart of the Sunrise...this type of music isn't really my thing but I find Chris Squire's bass work consistently compelling. this track is silly
J’étais trop hype par l’album mais j’suis grave déçue Je give quand même des points pour JJBA !
I loved the opening track but after that it felt one long, twiddly prog song. But I think that's the point. Disappointed to see not many reviews just saying 'No'. Thought the jokers would love that.
Apparently this is only the third album by Yes that I’ve encountered on this list. Yet it feels like the 8,000th. Think of all of the things you could be doing other than listening to music by Yes. I’ll bet you can think of more than 10001.
Very underwhelming prog album
No
The 70s really were an odd time...
If a mid-level Queen tribute band decided to try an album of Rush-inspired crap, it would be this. More time signature changes than interesting songs.
I’ve always known Yes from Owner of a Lonely Heart and Roundabout, but listening to this….had I ever actually heard Roundabout? I certainly didn’t know it was 8 and a half minutes long. Meh. No, I don’t like this
Roundabout “slaps”, but I dunno the other stuff feels like quasi-classical okay-ness.
Echt nicht meins Was eigenes Nur Anfang erster Song catchy Hella mid sry
Didnt care for it
Waited for it to be over
half the tracks are really cool and give me classic rock vibes the other half is boring shit that doesnt even sound good at all.
No.
I owned this album back in the day so I was curious to see how it stood up over the decades. Other than 1 or 2 songs I remember nothing about it which tells me I didn't listen to it much. I doubt I'd ever revisit this.
Maybe a little too crazy for me - really cool stuff but just not enough to catch on for the ear for me
One pretty good song followed by a very different rest of the album.
Pretentious, but kind of playful. Not my thing at all, but I enjoyed it slightly more than I anticipated.
Lite för flummigt och proggigt för min smak. Inte sugen på att lyssna på detta igen. 2:a
A little too prog for me
Det här var nog den minst dåliga av av de tre Yes-skivorna i boken. Ingen låt är bra. Men det finns bra delar i låtar som Roundabout, Long distance roundabout och Heart of the sunrise.
Nie je to hudba, ktorú vyhľadávam.
Terribly mid
No. I'm just not a prog rocker. A couple ok tunes but the rest is pretty forgettable
Yes? More like no !!!!!! 2/5 Best Song: Roundabout is a banger tbf can’t deny that baseline
Honking album, but roundabout is an absolute banger so it gets a 2 star.
Not a fan of Yes, and this album was especially annoying. They're just another one of those overhyped 70's bands.
weirdly only really feels like 4 songs on here. very long except!!!! when it isn't!!! it's fine
Some cool sounds, but to be honest, I couldn't get through the first record. The idea of a four hour album is only for the most devoted of fans...which I am not
Really not my cup of tea, I felt like I was being 4 4ed to death, way to straight and rocky for my taste
A point for giving us the Red House Painters cover of Long Distance Runaround
No Durability by No Thanks
Na that’s ok
Thank god punk came around and killed this garbage. I played Brahms when I was forced to play piano as a kid, it doesn't suddenly make you deep guys. Long Distance Runaround is the only tolerable song on here because it's the only one where the artists managed to pull their heads out their asses for a song. If I wanted to listen to guys noodle around on their guitars I'd just listen to the Grateful Dead or some other hippie rock band, at least those guys sound like they're having fun instead of thinking they're creating the next 1812 Overture or something.
So I realized Yes may be the ultimate TikTok music. Great in any 1-minute segment; but a whole 40-minute? No thanks.
I like prog but this is bad prog. Self indulgent, tedious and pretentious.
Interesting! I knew "Roundabout" but everything else was new to me. This felt like a grab bag album. It wasn't bad but it was very forgettable.
Overall just Meh for me, but I’m very familiar with roundabout and it’s the one single included which is interesting
I appreciate the complexity, but some songs were just hard to sit through.
Some decent musicianship here... But this wasn't for me.
Wasnt the biggest fan of this album, couldnt really listen the full versions of any of these songs. There is really something missing here i mean the ones that were only instrumental were just repetitive. I wouldnt really listen to any of these songs except "Long Distance Runaround"
2 - So Shmedium I really was underinspired Fav Songs: Mood for a Day // We Have Heaven
Good
if you're into instrumental sure, but I did not like this album. struggled to pay attention and cannot imagine trying to listen to the deluxe version
No
Okayish
No, my second Yes album in under a month. Too much prog rock for me again who needs a nearly 11 minute prog version of Simon & Garfunkle's America? Not me. 2 stars
Nearly made the mistake of listening to the super deluxe edition… the fist song was good vibes and then got a bit bored
All roads lead back to JJBA.
Just not my genre - this kind of psychedelic rock... Could work for a BBQ, idk
Tedious and pretentious
Liked the first song and the last song. Unfortunately, there is a double album of well-played but forgettable songs
Prog rock just isn’t my thing. There were a couple of good songs on here but I didn’t enjoy the majority of this album.
A great start to the album with Roundabout kicking things off. Very cool guitar licks and a soulful bass coming through to complement the high end vocals and synthesized keyboard. Things were tempered quickly thereafter. One song (Five per cent for nothing) sounded straight out of a video game and I have no idea why that was included on the album. Middle of the road for the rest of the tunes. It’s decent rock and roll, but there is nothing special about this album in my opinion.
Maybe I’m not sophisticated enough to get Prog Rock, but I bet it sounds great when you listen to it sitting alone in your parent’s basement on a Friday night. I penalized them one star for that cover of America. That was unforgivable.
Definitely an interesting experimental kind of album, but not really something I'd consider a "must listen".
Weird. Like Renaissance Fair rock.
Kende alleen het eerste nummer van tiktok
lol I mean it’s fine? some songs way too long but it is funny how hard Roundabout goes despite its new connotation
4 disks, 4 hours running time! FML. Made the decision to judge this off the 1st disc, as the others seemed to be the same songs just remixed. It was ok, not sure if I’d be rushing back
Strong start, and generally I quite like prog rock, but this was pretty uneven and all over the place.
Me: Mom, can we get the Pink Floyd album Mom: We have Pink Floyd at home This is the album at home ...
Unfortunately faded into the background for me after Roundabout, which is not enough credit to the band that went from this album to do "Close to the Edge" (which surely will pop up on this list if this did?) to somehow going on to write quintessential 80s pop cheese in the form of "Owner of a Lonely Heart"
not my type
meme song was cool but otherwise unremarkable
No
i like the first song because of the meme, i like how complex and groovie the songs are, but its not up my alley yet i apreciate them
I prefer my progressive rock to have more bite than this. That memey lick on Roundabout is amazing though.
No
Better than Tommy
Not my style
Top 3 South side of the sky Long distance runaround
Didn't save any songs but it was fine
Nothing wrong with it at all. Interesting. But I didn’t like it.
Not for me.
I really did not like this album very much. I can appreciate the musicianship however, this was not my cup of tea. I’m not a big fan of just endless guitar wanking.
MAGA men.
Not really sure how to place this album genre. Wasn't bad, but not great either.
Too self indulgent. Minus one star for absolutely butchering America.
Zeppeli: "Bastard... How many bland proggy dad rock albums are on this list!?" Dio: "Do you remember how many breads you have eaten in your life?" <----TO BE CONTINUED---|\| Genuinely, when I saw that this album had come up I rushed to see if "Roundabout" was on it - at the time, I thought this was the one Yes song I knew, having not realised that "Owner of a Lonely Heart" was also theirs. I found myself genuinely getting hyped seeing that it was the opening track, and was ready for some JoJo's Bizarre Adventure vibes. "Roundabout" is great. It's way too long, but it's great. It grooves, it rises and falls, it's just a good time. The rest of the album is more eclectic and proggy, and unfortunately every other song is also too long. This results in an album that feels drawn out and unanchored - a slightly torturous mess that doesn't give you a sense of stability for even a moment. Sometimes this would be a good thing - an album constantly keeping you in suspension and holding you there, forcing you to engage as it pulls you further along... unfortunately this isn't one of those. It's somehow both too bland and too nonsensical. It's a shame, I usually like experimental, proggy stuff. It's not completely dreadful, it's just... not great and too much of it.
Not a fan.
It's the Jojo meme song.
