Reviews (page 12 of 13)

How do we explain our music.... We draw inspiration from Rush, but we are sophisticated (Cans and Brahms), spiritual (We have heaven) incorporate some scatting (to be culturally sensitive) and end by doing acid so that the entire thing makes no sense and nobody take knows what they are listening to

Overall, I'm a no on Yes. I can appreciate that their music is complex and interesting but not so much my thing. I like the Fish song. Long Distance Runaround is pretty good. Some great bass playing on that one. I feel like my main criticism of Yes is that it's all kinda too much all over the place. Too many disjointed changes that don't really feel like they gel into cohesive songs (they have their moments).

This album is a little odd. Roundabout is a classic, but the rest was new to me. Some of the songs are too long and drawn out and others are weird interludes. It was a boring listen but might be more interesting on drugs.

Lots of really cool ideas on this. Lots of really bad ones too. Hard to give this more than a 2 when I don't think I would put a single song on by choice. Two probably seems a bit harsher than my feelings for this, but I don't think it is a 3.

Just when you think Yes can't find any more ways to be overindulgent wank, they pull put all the wank stops and indulge some more.

Uninspiring songs not worth listening to this.

#artsyfartsy #groovy #2

Idk i respect if im just not a giant fan of prog rock

They start with the only decent track. The rest is Wankfest™

Not the Yes I like

Anderson, Walkman, Buttholes and How! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCNVIsd0eKQ) I am not a fan of prog, not a fan. This album is regarded as being a precursor to the full-blown prog of their subsequent records. Lord preserve us! This still sounds like a rock band (when they are actually playing as a band), with foreshadowing of the over-arranged clever-clogs, full blown progressive of the 70s that was right around the corner, especially in the "individual" pieces (fragments really) scattered across the record. There are really only four proper songs on the record. As with all prog albums, moments of rock and roll appear, only to be lost in a swamp of tedium. There is some occasional proper rock guitar from Steve Howe, Chris Squire's bass playing is consistently muscular, Bill Bruford is always a star (especially when he remembers to keep the beat moving along) and Rick Wakeman's playing can be helpful when he keeps it under control. While I find Wakeman to be often funny and charming in interview, the pretentious and widdly-widdly synthesizer overkill is not to my taste. When Yes play as a focused unit, it's good, but too much of the time, it feels like less than the sum of its all-too-disparate parts. I did suffer to listen all the way through, but it's all talk and no bloody trousers. And the fast bit in Heart of the Sunrise sounds suspiciously like the fast bit from King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man. As many of the contemporaneous reviews stated; it's just showing off. Prog: it's the emperors new music.

Giving me this album right after I rated Yes’ first album a 2/5 is cruel

Not my cup of tea, not even close to being my cup of tea. It's listenable but drab. It sounds like the sort of music made by middle-aged city workers, when they get home at the week-end and have a cheeky glass of red wine with a line, or two, of columbian marching powder. It gets the 2 star treatment from me.

It got my attention with “Roundabout” with some Pre-Queen vibes with the layered harmonies. And then to have a weird, random ass Baroque style piano solo next with “Cans and Brahms”, ok I’m listening…. and then it’s shit. There’s a reason we all know and love Queen and not these guys. Relies way to heavily on the harmonies gimmick. There is some intriguing instrumentation here but they make the cardinal sin of forgetting to make it actually sound pleasing to listen to.

Really like Roundabout but the rest of it wasn’t super memorable. I know I have heard Roundabout before but I don’t know where. I think it must be a song my Dad likes. I definitely associate the familiar part of it with like Chicago or The Eagles. The Chicago part may be similar to 25 or 6 to 4? Idk but I would like to find out. 2 stars for a song I really like on an album that I don’t care for too much.

When I started collecting vinyl records, my father-in-law gave me all of his old ones. A majority of them were Yes albums. I thought I would give them a listen and maybe it would be a band that we could bond over. I didn't enjoy Yes then, and I don't enjoy Yes now. Not really sure what he sees in them, but I just don't get it. Cool album art though.

Again, no.

Ok rock band, a few good songs, couple of them became hits. Never seemed to have a great run like some of the other rock bands of the time.

naja ..(.

First song got cool bass but that's about it for me

Fame is a great song but not enough to make this interesting

A more appropriate name for this band may have been "No"

YES!? More like....maybe.

Prog dorks are so impressed with themselves for having heard classical music. Who cares?! Get over it. This one is better than the yes album bc there is some cool synth stuff (roundabout) and bc they abandoned the flutey folk sound for something with harder riffs (5%) with bass parts that rip (heart of the sunrise) and even coming close to having a groove (the fish). But good lord this crap is always on the precipice of being extremely annoying. Totally incoherent songs where 30 seconds of a good idea immediately ruined by a hard right turn into some goofy nonsense. Favorites: the fish, the first couple of minutes of heart of the sunrise, the part of America where they're doing an Allman Brothers parody until he starts singing

As a friendly-faced presenter of One Show segments, I don't want to be mean to Rick Wakeman, but this is the type of prog rock that bores the old man y-fronts off me. I'm sure it's technically brilliant and I understand that beardy Rick is a virtuoso on keys, but it just doesn't interest me at all. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Roundabout Date listened: 06/03/24

Weird album. 2.3

Roundabout still rules, but the rest of this album thinks it's a lot more interesting than it actually is.

My first 2 star. It just doesn't stand out from the crowd. There was some nice guitar but I was pretty bored and glad when it ended. There's just better rock from this era. Hope this is their only album on the list.

I'm reasonably familiar with Yes, though it's a band that I really don't like. I find the tracks on this album complex (presumably technically proficient), but rather unengaging. It's not an album I particularly enjoyed - I don't really go for progressive rock on the whole. 3/5

roundabout- why is 8 minutes. wait dude........ omg. i cant take it seriously sorry. 4 cans and brahms- 3 or 4 we have heaven- 2 south side of the sky- 2 go away from me five per cent for nothing- 7 tbh long distance runaround- 3. or 2 the fish- 3 mood for a day- 3 heart of the sunrise- im not doing this favorite track- five per cent for nothing

So many changes and so much going on I couldn't really get in to this.

Too much over thinking

The 70s were a magical time - when ugly, uncool white men could put out technically proficient, yet nearly unlistenable music and still make a career of it. "Roundabout" is okay, but the rest almost pissed me off. 2.3

Un poco rollo.

Not really my thing. one or two tracks that I would include in a playing list

This was ok but not particularly interesting or memorable.

Some cool tracks, but a pretty forgettable listen overall

It’s cool but nothing mind blowing. Average album that should only be enjoyed from start to finish, and not as independent singles

Maybe I'm in the wrong mood for this but I found a lot of it insufferable pretentious noodling. Add in a terrible cover of Simon & Garfunkle's "America" at the end and I'm ready for this to be done.

Typical prog. Don't care for the sound or the lyrics. I'm astonished to see people commenting "this is music from heaven" or similar.

There were some interesting melodies and other aspects, but not once did I genuinely wanted to listen to any given song again.

About what I expected – meandering prog rock. A few catchy hooks here and there followed by endless, pointless, boring improvisational solos. Sadly, I’m just not a classic rock guy. I have now listened to three of the best albums of all time: Disraeli Gears, Station to Station & Fragile. Really didn’t have much use for any of them. Disraeli Gears was gloomy and dark and heavy, Station to Station was cold and emotionless, and Fragile is pointlessly meandering. I need some hooks and melody. I get it – I’m not a particularly sophisticated listener.

•Not owned: Streaming •Never been prone to prog my rock but I listened with an open mind (in multiple time signatures). Quality production/mixing but it just sounds like Hobbit rock to me. Exception: “Heart of the Sunrise,” whose licks and vocal performances I actually enjoyed. • 2/5

Bit waffly

Not good.

I can't deny I caught myself foot tapping along at various points, but overall, it is very bland and largely forgettable.

Oy progrock sucks so much. Roundabout was good until it went off the rails. Like, there’s some good musical arrangements and complex compositions. But it’s lousy to listen to unless you’re really into progrock.

I once liked roundabout.

Boring tosh. (I know, I know, it's poor form to belittle the artistic endeavours of others etc. Whatever.)

Prog rock…hmm

I am starting to realize that there was a lot of “Musical Theatre” experimentation in the 70s. The sound of this album is fine, for the most part. The super long (and super short) tracks are a tad annoying. I’d probably enjoy this album more if it was the soundtrack of a live stage production.

Was okay but didn't seem like anything special

Ok, it's very good. Like The Who but way more psychedelic and interesting. The actual musicality is great, but as a preference, since playing piano, guitar and bass for a bunch of years, I've weirdly grown to hate keyboard solos, open chords on electroacoustic guitars and slap bass. This has all of those things in abundance - even which the literal perfect levels of distortion and cool as fuck opening track. So while I want to give it more stars, I physically cannot.

I would've been happier if they just played Roundabout for 40 minutes.

Once again, an underwhelming Yes album. It started off strong with Roundabout, but the song itself began to drag and the rest of the album was so eclectic going from prog rock to baroque to whatever else and I just didn’t understand it. The lack of structure in songs makes it difficult to lose myself in any of them, and the album as a whole suffers with the same issue. It’s a shame as there were lots of really good musical ideas, I just don’t like the way they choose to use them. Prog rock just isn’t for me I think. 2/5

I like yes some years ago. Then I got old, I guess...

Store-brand Pink Floyd. Starts with a banger, then it's all classical guitar and not fully fleshed our themes.

jojo song. I thought there were some cool cuts, but nothing held my interest for the entirety of a song

Was ok

2.5 stars. The leadoff "Roundabout" is great, but the album is all downhill from there. I guess I'm just not into 70's prog rock.

I don't think I'll listen to this again.

Un poco rollo.

I’m Fragile on Progressive Rock. Sorry.

It’s a long with lots of interludes. There are good moments but didn’t hold my attention. I like South Side of the Sky 5.5/10

Had one Yes album here before that didn't impress that much, and this is not really improving on the matter. On paper I should like them, and I wish I did, but I just don't. I think it's just too much, perhaps. It feels like they try to cram in too many notes in their songs for my liking, and it just gets messy.

Not in the mood for "Yes" today at all. Highly technical but found it mostly noisy. I did enjoy the opening track "Roundabout" (made famous by memers). The rest was quite a slog. Not much more to say except I couldn't wait for it to be over.

There were a few enjoyable songs in this album and I appreciated the funky bass. This would be very mood based for me - and I was not in the mood :( Just too much going on - calm the fuck down Yes, I'm feeling Fragile. Track I'd say Yes to again: Roundabout (which I only learnt today is what is sampled to make a song I really love by Slugabed called 'Mountains Come out of the Sky' - who knew!?!)

I have heard of Yes but had no idea who they were. I've heard this Roundabout song a million times but thought it was Rush or something. They're alright at times. I pretty much hate all 70s prog but some of this was bearable.

Favoritas: Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround.

It was fine. Find it interesting that most of the songs are either 8 minutes or a minute and a half. Didn't dislike it but probably won't listen again

Never heard of these guys - pretty interesting sound! Psychedelic a bit... some sounds reminded me of Pink Flloyd, a lot of keyboard, symphony sounds - like a ballet. It sounds like they had a blast making it. Their music sounds like a story ... sometimes trying too hard a bit for me. I'd never seek the album out to listen to personally... but glad I got to experience it.

This album immediately overstayed it's welcome. Some of the funky bass stuff had me tapping my foot, but aside from that it really dragged

Not a huge fan of this. A lot of the tracks have cool bits but the lack of any meaningful lyrical direction was a miss for me. There wasn't a single track that really was good all the way through.

Progressive dad rock, eat your heart out. Too many instrumentals and over-indulgent tracks that went for waaaay too long. It’s a no from me. Fav song: America (ironically my favourite song was a cover).

Not my jam

It’s okay

One hit song that I knew of - album is full of basic riffs with transitions that are lacking. Did not spark any emotions in me at all.

This annoyed me

Boring

Not à big fan

Bit strange, some classical riffs and a simon and garfunkel cover. Talented musicians for sure, album felt a bit all over the place- maybe what prog rock is supposed to be?

Most of my teenage years were spent with my dad trying to convince me Yes were the greatest band to walk the Earth. I never once humoured him. Now 20 years later a random generator has forced me to listen. And you know what? Dad, they ain’t all that and their best song is still Owner of a Lonely Heart from GTA Vice City.

As much as I want to like prog rock, it is too much like wanking.

Too long, overblown and indulging in bad traits. Not horrible but not good.

Less convinced by this one than by their earlier offering that we had. This one doesn't seem to have evolved from that much, in the way that Pink Floyd and Genesis evolved and changed going into the 70s. There's not enough that really grabs your attention, and the prog bits are really, really prog in a not particularly good way. The America cover on the deluxe edition is the worst of the bunch, taking a wonderful song and stretching it out to 3x its length with a load of noodling that adds nothing. 2/5.

This album is further evidence that prog rock is not my jam.

The first song was good & that's about it. This is a NO for me.

Im not gonna lie. apart from roundabout, i dont understand the hype around this album. from looking at the tracklist, there are a few long songs that make up most of the runtime and a couple of shorter songs. having multiple 9+ min songs on your album makes the whole album a slug to get through. so far i liked roundabout and thats really it. this album is kind of boring. i like the keys on south side of the sky. im also liking the second half of south side of the sky. long distance runaround is a fun track, sounds like a song id here in a video game. the fish is a short song. its fine. so far my raitng of the album is either a 4 or 5. it just feels bland. yesterday i was excited to see my next album, after listening to the masterpiece that is paranoid. but now im just disappointed. imo the best songs on the album are roundabout and heart of the sunrise. omg im so glad the album ended. it was really boring. i rate this album a 5/10

Roundabout inspired by the druve from Aberdeen to Glasgow. 'Cans and Brahms' is Wakeman's adaptation of an excerpt of the third movement of Symphony No. 4 in E minor by Johannes Brahms.

Prog: Where capable musicians meet nerdy nonsense. And nerdy nonsense prevails.

Not the worst, but certainly music that leaves me indifferent. I would argue the [only] Yes album that truly belongs here is 90125.

the horrors i felt when jojo's ending song started playing are indescribable

There's some great momentum behind many of the tracks here. They start at 50mph and don't slow down. Polly Harvey has a great technique at building up songs. You feel like you're being carried along with them. I love the voice and the way it matches the music effortlessly. I raised a smile when Thom Yorke waded in singing in a higher key.

So, those first few chords. I used to teach geography back in the day. When we used to watch videos sometimes - you know, actual video tape, taped from the schools programmes on the tele (we used to colour in as well, of course). Those chords remind me so much of the sad music chords that were on the classic Skyscrapers and Slums video (I think it was that one - might have been one about the Tropical Rainforest). Took me back to days in warm 90s classrooms. But, well, after that all a bit meh really. I quite like prog rock, but I've never been ablate get on with Yes. The pseudo-classical stuff is a particular issue and there's no way I'm ever going to listen to this again. It's not dreadful, but it's really not OK. So, despite those first few chords taking back to another time and place, it's a 2 here.

Roundabout is a great song and I really appreciate the talent of Yes but I couldn't get into this album at all.

I have a theory that prog like this died out because the boys that were making it and listening to it never got any sex. A tedious album in all respects.

2.5 20 years ago, a preparatory school substitute teaching under the name Ned Schneebly put this album in the hands of a young keyboardist, assigning him to listen to the keyboard solo on Roundabout and assuring it would “blow the classical music out of your butt”. In hindsight, there’s an extra layer of humor to that quote having now listened to this album. Yeah, the keyboard on Roundabout is pretty cool, but the second track on the album is quite literally classical music. No idea if that line was written with that in mind, but either way, poor Lawrence had to put up with more of that bullshit, and subsequently, I did as well. That’s not to say that classical music is outright bad by any means, but listening to an artist of a genre I don’t love put their spin on a genre I like even less… it’s like if Creed did a cover of Achy Breaky Heart. We all lose in that scenario. The rest of the album is pretty mid prog rock with an acoustic solo or two thrown in there. Look, I’ve never claimed to be the biggest fan of the genre, but Rush or King Crimson have a way of making their music feel epic and exciting, and this… this just doesn’t get me there. If you like the song Roundabout I get it, it’s pretty good, but I could live without it, and that was the high point of the album for me. Didn’t hate it, but it didn’t do much for me. Between this and The Yes Album, it seems I’m just not much of a Yes fan.

Not my sound, but the opening track is the meme.

Last song tooo loooong

Too much prog-rock meandering and not enough good songs. Close to the Edge was great, this one is just tiring after the first few minutes.

first song is the meme song, its pretty good but then the album falls off

i don’t think i love prog rock- but heart of the sunrise is a perfect culmination of the entire album - a fitting final song. I wish I could give half stars- would give 2.5.

Roundabout- I’m not all too familiar with the meme or the song, even though I guess its big? This is such a generic prog rock song I’m surprised it can even be this generic Hearing the rest of this, I’m just not taken with it. I guess it was influential.. ngl I don’t like prog rock that much bc it just tends to be a bunch of self satisfied white dudes performing drawn out songs with esoteric lyrics. also why do all prog rock frontmen have the same voice. Anyway I’m a bit tired and cranky so I’m gonna give this the benefit of the doubt so 2/5 Downloaded track: South side of the sky. Think a track about polar expeditions could be cool, and it intrigued me

Hab ich irgendwie gar nicht gefühlt

Make it stop

The album had glimmers of interest here and there but I struggled to get through it even after multiple listens. I really don't want to listen to it again. 2+/5

jaja el meme de vine !!!

NO Where's owner of a lonely heart when you need it!? Five percent for nothing has to go down as one of the worst songs ever produced?

Interesting and varied sounds, but they’ve been put together in a bloated hodgepodge of uninteresting songs. Roundabout is great, and Heart of the Sunrise was a bit mental (in a good way) but overall, one’s pickle was barely tickled.

Best bass riff going on roundabout. Pop Prog without that Journey nonsense. SOT Roundabout 2/5

Not that special

Weird one this. I went into this with high hopes, I'm a fan of prog-rock and i've heard a handful of Yes songs in the past and enjoyed them all, however this didn't really do it for me. The album is bookended by two great tracks, both very enjoyable despite their lengthy runtime, however I am not too impressed by the rest, and much of it feels a bit all over the place without any proper coherence, although this is definitely a characteristic of progressive rock records. Overall, I'm a bit disappointed by this one, but I can certainly appreciate it for what it is, it just simply isn't for me. Favourite songs: Roundabout, Heart of the Sunrise

No. But in the album's defense, it's better than the Genesis albums on the list. Probably closer to a 2.5 than a 2. And Long Distance Runaround is something of a banger.

The good songs were played out on classic rock stations for years and years and the rest is pretty ho hum. Definitely not a fan. Somewhat difficult to revisit. Not earbleed painful, but not great.

Great riff on that South Side of the Sky track, but the electric organ signature sound of Yes has always been a turnoff. Five Percent Nothing sounds like it was written by Mike Watt. Not sure if that's a lute but some of these tracks make me think I'm at some overpriced dinner theatre watching yawnable Shakespeare plays. Though there are some familiar tracks here and also some likeable characteristics of the album like those riffs and unexpected pauses, Yes's Fragile is a big no.

No. Prog rock is not my thing. The Brahms was an unexpected surprise.

On paper, Yes should tick all the boxes for me, but in reality ... they don't. Nothing speaks to me here. There is definitely a progressive vibe, but to my ears it sounds so generic, without anything standing out. Perhaps this particular band just isn't for me. 2/5

This just isn’t what I listen to music for. All the digressions and unusual rhythms and chromatics and other gimmicks are very jarring. They make it impossible for a song to establish a mood, let alone lead anywhere. It’s almost worse that they sometimes flirt with building a serious groove, because it is such a let down when they then pull the rug. This album really is a chore to listen to. If you’re wondering why other reviews mention a cover of America, apparently there are different versions. If you were spared like I was, I think you can consider yourself lucky.

Roundabout is great. And mood for a day has a classical vibe to it. Unfortunately much of the rest doesn't really work for me. The vocal layers and harmonies aren't pleasant (occasionally dated and it even sounds out of tune) and the prog-rock nature of it emerges and gets a bit boring.

I tried listening a couple of Times now, still can't get behind it.

Confusing as shit

Not for me. Thanks.

whoever called it "wizard nerd rock" was right

1 legendary song and a lot of somewhat goofy and dated synthy-sounding guitar picking

TBC meme, repetitive at start

Nope. Not a fan. Don't know why. I regularly change station when Roundabout comes on.

Favourite song: Roundabout One for the karaoke: South Side of the Sky One for the car: Long Distance Runaround Waited for that 70s rock banger that never really dropped

Favourite song - Roundabout Sing in the Shower - We have heaven Swim - Five per cent for nothing Nah.

Favourite song - Heart of Sunrise One for Karaoke- Roundabout One for a run - Roundabout Some funky baselines but only really remember the first and last song. Needs a repeat listen.

this shit is chaos

Everything about this albums feels so awkward. I get that it’s prog rock it’s not supposed to follow much of a structure, but it all just feels so out of place. The vocals are often just cringey to listen to, the lyrics make almost zero sense, and many of the instrumentals seem like they’re out of a Nintendo video game. The actual instrumental work was the only reason it pops above a 1-star. 3/10

Bought this album on cd once, together with The Yes Album, against my better judgment. Rated The Yes Album as 1* some months ago, but now listened to both albums again and think both of them are at least listenable. In fact, the well-known album closer on Fragile is even quite good. (but still, it would have been nicer if 90125 had been on the list..)

Starts so funky, roundabout is fun. I feel like i always tend to like the first track of an album. it sets the tone for the rest. they are jamming. oh these are long songs. they're funky but there isn't a thread that connects them. it's interesting but i don't think i'll revisit.

Very close to a 1, tedious

It's as if Spinal Tap never happened. Wellz obviously, it hadn't at this point but... Y'know. Very over the top, rock nerdery. Mostly not my thing. I did enjoy Roundabout. I definitely prefer the Paul Simon version of America.

Iconic first track in its full 8 and a half minute glory. I'd never heard the full song before so I didn't know acoustic guitar could combine so nicely with funky bass and electro keys. The rest of the album is weird, or eclectic if you will, with the short tracks on the A side sounding like interludes between big numbers in a rock opera. But it's not grand or gripping enough to be rock opera. There are some cool and intricate moments (I'll probably play Mood for a Day again) but the rest of the album really doesn't live up to Roundabout.

Very diverse prog, including classical interpretations. About on par with my expectation. Missing melody, but the technical skill is there.

Yes's brand of prog rock is just too boring and weird for me to get into. A couple songs on here I enjoyed, the rest I did not.

Some bits good, but so many bits of keyboard and bass playing quickly with no connection to the song. I actually prefer '80s Yes.

normally i like yes, but not this album. Bass sound is good. Sounds tube driven

18th April 2022 Listened in the morning and finished while playing in the garden with Flynn. Helped Guy sort his stuff out post robbery then vans store. I don’t like prog but this was far more accessible. Makes me think of my dad. 2.5 if I could.

Roundabout

Prog rock may be my least favorite music style. This album helps confirm that. Sure Roundabout is a classic, Mood for a Day is nice, and a couple other listenable bits, but nah, not my thing.

Dit album lag me niet volledig. Het gaat wat van hot naar her

sådär

Didn't Like... First song had that licc though.

Mainly self indulgent noodling

meme ass all sounds very samey

It was ok

Meh. Ei Roundaboutin voittanutta mut muuten ei sytytä.

Fragile proves that Yes is just still discount king crimson

Not as bad as Incubus, but still does my head in with no redeeming features

"The Fish" och "Mood for a Day" va små toppen hifi-praliner. perfekta Intermezzon som gärna fick komma lite tidigare men markerar snyggt innan en lite mer rivig avslutning.

Roundabout good, rest very self indulgent

Not for me, Clive

I want to like them, but i just don't

Interesting album, not really my thing

Stop the Seinfeld bass line! Keyboards are killing me and not in a good way. Dog hates it. Row, row, row your boat never sounded worse. South Side of the Sky almost listenable - rocks a little. Apologies for my poor attitude but prog rock makes me throw up in my mouth. And there are still three songs to go. Mood for a Day - finally a reason to live! Heart of the Sunrise - getting better - the soundtrack to a James Bond action sequence. Hold everything! Eleven minutes long?! Who do they think they are? Iron Maiden? It's like Empire of the Clouds only different and not as good.

More Yes - fantastic. I don't hate it, but it's just a bit wank, isn't it? All very dated and just and uncool. What a bunch of keyboard shagging geeks. I bet Iris Law isn't remotely interested in this. 🍄

More prog, yay. If this album was a footballer, it would be Kazuyoshi Miura - it goes on playing forever.

Un poco rollo

I got one track into this album. It sounded cool, but I could not pay attention.

not very good......only one good song. Yes. Kinda boring after that.

Just another boring prog Rock album

Ugh progrock. I’m sure your polyrhythms are very intricate and intelligent but could you not just write a chorus I can sing along to?

too long, too repetitive... didn't like

This is the weirdest album I've ever listened to because usually I will have some sort of opinion on an album or it will illicit some sort of emotional response but this made me feel nothing but I kinda liked some of the instrumentals and I didn't hate it but because it made me feel so much nothing then I can't give it a good score.

I only had heard of Roundabout and Long Distance Runaround before, song I greatly appreciate due to their energetic style, surprising arrangements and catchy melodies. However, I sometimes feel the repetitive background vocals are too grating and distract from the enjoyable instrumentals on most tracks. Overall a 2/5 is fitting.

Loved the beginning and end of the album…the middle was boring and repetitive. Wasn't very impressed.

Not the meme song omg? This was trip Favorites: South Side of the Sky Mood for a Day

I saw these guys live in HS and remember liking them, unlike this album.

Not my kind of music. Had to turn it off as found it got too irritating.

Nah, I’ve listened to enough albums now to know this is not a good one.

Yes? No.

Prog rock

By some bizarre coincidence I once spotted Rick Wakeman from Yes on the platform at Colchester train station, whilst simultaneously feeling very fragile because my left eye had weirdly puffed up to the point where I could barely see out of it (thankfully I could still see Rick out of my other eye). You might think that this was an unmistakable sign from the universe that I should have thoroughly enjoyed this album, but it didn’t really do it for me. I’m just not a fan of prog I guess.

an old HS buddy loved yes. His dad claimed that they wrote a song about him. I could never get into anything he played for me. I still don't get it. It's not "bad" and there is a lot of talent on display. Just nothing that warrants a reply for me.

Nah, I’m all good thanks

i can safely pass on this one

Mediocre

Like Rush. But way worse

Never been much into prog and this didn't change that. The cool bits of all the long tracks would make good shorter songs, I don't really feel the need for all the meandering in between

Just ok, not my favourite

Congratulations! You played all the notes. I just don't care!

I can't believe I finished it. Genuinely didn't think I would halfway through Roundabout. But I made it. Yay for me. The only song I even remotely enjoyed was the last one, "Heart of the Sunrise". But even that 3 star song was not enough to elevate the rest of the album.

Zbyt progresywne.

Not sure what I was supposed to take from this.

Here we go la, la, la la la. Maybe been born in the 60s and a child of thd 70s but i hate prog. Noddling about thinking their real clever. Here we have some long aimless songs mixed with short aimless songs. First song is ok. All downhill from here..

Bastante soso

Again, no

Nej tack! Tillägg Dagens positiva betraktelse: Inga fler Yes-album i boken.

De första fem minuterna var ok. Cans and Brahms och Mood for a Day motiverar ettan.

Yes? NO!!! I can't stand noodling. I can't stand musicians who show off at the expense of a good tune - well done on getting your Grade 8s, lads. I can't stand 1970s Beardy Man Rock. This is so not for me.

No songs or tunes that stuck out, and one song was just noise and very irritating

No for Yes.

Sadly not my thing at all.

Long Distance Runaround

1/5 MEME SONG LMAOOOOO I didnt like it tho, very dad music vibes…

I repeat from the last Yes album. Only gig I’ve ever walked out on and I stand by it.

Not Great.

I'm not sure what the deal is with this one but it didn't do it for me. It felt like the cry for help of someone struggling with HPPD. 1-1.5

The story behind this album's inclusion on the list is actually quite interesting, as it was intended for the companion book "1001 Albums that Make Brandon Want to Die" but ended up here due to a publishing mix-up. An understandable, though unfortunate, error.

Meh. Roundabout is the only somewhat redeemable song and that isn't even very good. The rest of this album was a giant question mark that I didn't enjoy at all.

Ultra lange lieder omg Funky i like Bisschen weird/anstrengend ein ganzes album so zu hören Experimentell, wie weniger palatable pink floyd

Yuck. Long and boring.

Just a bunch of noise. The vocals are good. I could barely hear the lyrics.

Awful. One of the worst things I've ever heard.

Not my cup of tea. I'm just not into jam band type music and this was no exception. As a dear friend of mine once said, "It's like they got ripped to the gills and just stepped into the studio: 'LETS JUST FUCK AROUND, BOYS'"

Didn’t like this sadly.

No. I got two yes albums in a row and I tried, I really tried. Very instrumental heavy and I get it's a story telling album, but I couldn't really get into the story because I was just so relieved to hear lyrics. Again, if you like long instrumentals and clever storytelling through sound, this is for you. Just not for me

Roundabout is good and south side of the sky but even that. Please end the songs. Everything is too long. not for me I think this is a one and a half but since we dont have a half I’ll give it 2 reluctantly

El rock progresivo no es lo mío. No me gustó.

Given that Rick Wakeman is an absolute genius of a keyboard player, how on earth can Yes make such rambling tosh?

excessively long instrumentals… why is there an eleven minute song? whole album made me mad: playing random music just to play music

Fuck this

Overblown and pompous

Didn’t like this at all, not me at all

Not for me unfortunately.

Ha ha ha ha. Shark Sandwich? More like Shit Sandwich.

Sorry, Yes - it's a hard No.

Are the last couple prog rock I thought I was coming around on the genre. And maybe I was, but this sucked. Makes me want to bully some renaissance festival carnies, or some D&D kids.

Prog? No thank you.

Nothing against prog rock but this was a step to far , appreciate the musicianship but tried to combine too much with this album and as a result found it too unconnected , didn’t flow

Holy crap I hate prog Rock.

Hideous

Not my cup of tea

Putain, Yes. J'ai (à peine) survécu à "The Yes Album". Oui, tu as bien lu. Et puis il y a "Heart of the Sunrise", 11 minutes.

? Wie in anderem Review geschrieben, pusht 1001 einfach alles was irgendwie Rock ist, finde keinen Zugang...c

Roundabout - Classic boring

First and last time for everything I guess. Didn't do super deluxe. I do not like Yes.

Not really for me.......

Roundabout and filler. Roundabout is undoubtedly a great song. Filler is shite. For 1 good song one gets a load of nothing. Jesus himself would turn over in his grave. This goes to -11.

Really only one decent song on this album and it isn’t even that great

It is not an album for me. I can admire that Yes are people that understands how to make rock music sound great and like an art . But if i wanted to hear classic i listen to a symphony orchestra

Excellent album for progrockers und umzug!

I did not have enough LSD in the house to enjoy this.

Beyond bad. The sort of music “smarter” kids used to boast about, while the rest of love Trex and Slade. This is for the soulless.

*yawn*

Not a fan of Yes or prog

I can’t. I tried.

I don't think I can adequately explain how much I hate this. I'm not a prog fan or of jam bands in general. This band is both. They're all very talented. Playing around in all these off-kilter time signatures playing difficult fills constantly. Bands like these play and noodle around for a long time with no payoff musically or emotionally. I find it all so boring. And frankly irritating. Just...no.

Only made it a couple tracks in, wasn’t really our thing. Bit much, sounds dated.

Music that sounds more fun to play than to listen to.

Kłuje w uszy, kupa

Fucking tedious

Every cliche about prog on one album

Not for me

not my cup of tea, ears were unhappy

No, just no.

Ok donc le prog rock c'est : nul.

Roundabout is the big hit, which I thought was by Supertramp. The guitar part of this song is the same as the melody to Love Machine by The Miracles. And now I can't hear anything else. Prog Rock sucks. This song goes on forever, eight and a half minutes. At least the remainder of the album is relatively short since this is sucking up all the air on it. Cans and Brahms is so pretentious. Reminds me of ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition "cover". We Have Heaven is the most annoying round I've ever heard. And now some radio show door slamming and walking sound effects. Every song on the album sounds like I've Seen All Good People but worse. Three song of 8 minutes or more and short, filler tracks in between. This is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. South Side of the Sky is insufferable. Rush heard this and thought, "We can suck too." Five per Cent for Nothing is only 37 seconds long and might be the most annoying track on the album. It sounds like the start of a Primus song. These guys couldn't be more pretentious, The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus) is literally them using a Latin name for the number of syllables but trying to sound smart. And closed out with an eleven-and-a-half minute drag.

South side starts alright but that bass tone is farty as hell and makes me feel bad. The song also gets hell goofy. Roundabout - a meme punchline - what can you say. Oh and then I realised there are more than 4 songs on this. Are they all 10 minutes long? Thankfully no. 5% of nothing is sort of Zappa-esque I hate this

alas, did not finish (nor did i want to) (i didn’t try v hard though - sowwy)

just boring and not good

i did not finish. it wasn't of my taste.

I found this to be really obnoxious. Yes? More like No thank you.

The guitar work is nice, the singing is decent, but I just don't like the songs. And they're way too long. Best song: Long Distance Runaround

A bit all over the place, but the genre doesn’t immediately appeal anyway.

Prog flop

About as stimulating as a quadratic equation

Yuck. Pretentious pseudo classical music with rock instrumentation. Don't like it at all. 1.5 stars

Boring

wow. i did not like this at all. maybe listening to it while walking to work on the first day was a bad idea but i had no patience for anything it was attempting. before this i was like i like all rock music but now i’m like ok no to prog rock….
