Tour de force Prefs: Bat Out of Hell, You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night), All Revved Up With No Place to Go, Paradise by the Dashboard Light Moins pref: Two Out of Three Ain't Bad

so, so, silly but in an entertaining way

Genre: Pop Rock 4/5 A pop rock opera for the ages, from a gaggle of gentlemen who you'd never expect to create one of the best selling albums of all time, Bat Out of Hell is rock maximalism taken to its most theatrical. Near-glam, near-musical, but all rock 'n roll. Meat Loaf's soaring tenor voice, Todd Rundgren's rich layers of guitars, and Jim Steinman's tremendous piano playing and songwriting all mesh together to make something truly wonderful. From the 10-minute prog pop epic title track, to the catchy pop rock jam You Took the Words..., to the rock suite Paradise by the Dashboard Light, this album is full of all of the things that make great rock albums great. Great singing, great guitar playing, fun and interesting arrangements, and musicians having an absolute blast with their material. If you found a modicum of enjoyment out of this, certainly take a gander at Rundgren's solo material. Theatrical, self aware, and very good. RIP to the dude Meat Loaf, one of the best to ever do it on the mic.

It was pretty good. I love dashboard, the rest were hit or miss for me.

family classic ent it

Liked it a lot better than I thought I would

4 out of 5 not bad!

Another classic. I had a Rocky horror picture show phase and meatloaf guided me.

This was like the Rocky Horror Picture Show with motorcycles. I kind of dig it though.

Nie moja bajka, ale ciekawe

Very original!

A fantastic, hysterical and emphatic exaggeration of rock'n'roll clichés. A wonderful glam rock album. (7/10) FT: Bat out of Hell, Paradise By the Dashboard Light

There are some thumping ballads on here, but time has not been kind to many of them. Paradise by the dashboard light is genius. Takes the album from 3 to 4.

Pure rock opera. Just like the second coming of The Who's Tommy. This thing is rock with influences from all over with a sensibility of rock but also for storytelling and it sounds great. It's a musical experience non unlike Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band. I can't believe I never heard this album because it's great!

I remember seeing Meat Loaf in college, before "Bat Out Of Hell 2". He gave a great performance, played a lot of this album live. He really poured his heart into every song, you could tell he loved it, but he was ready to move on to that next level... Wait, so what was I talking about? Oh yeah, Bat Out Of Hell. Every song on this album is so... bombastic. Any one of these songs would take an album up another level. I could imagine someone like Springsteen taking one of them on, and really going for it, just like Meat Loaf does. The problem is that EVERY SONG is like that. You would think that "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" would be that epic song, the longest track, right? Nope. "For Crying Out Loud," the NEXT song, is LONGER. It's just so... exhausting. Even the slow songs are over the top. I'm surprised Meat Loaf is able to perform these songs without an oxygen tank. It's a really good album, but just... WAY over the top. I feel like I burn off a couple hundred calories listening to it.

Love the whole rock opera motif and the mix of instruments and soaring numbers is impressive (kudos Jim Steinman). And Meatloaf has a great voice. Paradise has always been good (super witty/cheeky) and Two out of Three Ain't Bad is a personal fave. Bat out of Hell is a little long but it is high energy rock, as is You Took the Words Right out of My Mouth (which has an intro that is both entertaining and creepy). I was a little surprised at how boring I found Heaven Can Wait and All Revved Up. For Crying Out Loud was somewhere in between. A 3.5 for sure, and I'll round up for the uniqueness.

I liked it better than I though. Definitely has a reputation as a classic.

Sounds like the soundtrack to a musical, and of course it was made into one 40 years later. It's not just any musical, though - it's a zany, nostalgic, rock opera, Springsteen parody (ish), retelling of Peter Pan. A wild ride. Long live the Loaf. Best track: Paradise by the Dashboard Light

Cracker

Rock solid.

Really enjoyed this one. I think I'd heard the title song before, but not really any of the others. The name Meat Loaf certainly does not betray the quality of his songwriting, which is probably why I've stayed away so long.

not what i expected! reminds me of rocky horror, maybe because hes in that movie. solid 4.

This album is like Rocky Horror Picture Show

Pretty singular and excellent even though it oozes toxic horniness

Great opening track. This album incredibly unique in its scope. Rock operas had been a thing for over a decade, but this album feels more like a rock musical with the way it's arranged. It's a fine distinction but I think it holds. I became a bit bored with the middle bit, but it certainly had some very bombastic and interesting moments.

Rock con mezcla. Recuerda a un músical.

Opera as rock and roll. Kudos to Todd Rundgren's stellar production!

We need a new Meat Loaf. Who out there can take the meat torch and run with it???

Some of the best cheesy epic rock n roll you'll ever get. "And nothing really rocks and nothing really rolls and nothings ever worth the cost" Point deducted for a few of the filler tracks.

Absolute bangers

Musical rock

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Bat out of hell, Paradise by the dashboard light

This was one of my first CDs along with Nirvana - Nevermind, Village People - Greatest Hits, Damn Yankees - Don't Tread, Classic Queen and Queen Greatest Hits. Jim Steinman and Meatloaf never sounded better together.

This is so extra, but in a good way.

Klassiker zumindest für mi

most of the songs I have danced to, not sure why now in my old age. Must be mellowing.

Zu pompös für die meisten Lebenslagen. Aber verrückt gutes Album

Epic! The singles are the best part and have stood the rest of time for a reason. But some other amazing tracks to be found here as well.

Favourite Song: Paradise By the Dashboard Light

There's a reason this is one of the best-selling albums of all time. Very enjoyable and fun, such that even the 8 minute+ songs never seem to drag on. Saved: Bat Out of Hell, Paradise By the Dashboard Light

Pretty good album. These songs are all very grand and rockish. 1RS

Eigenlijk best lekker. Veel beter dan ik verwachte!

The beginning was stronger than the end, or maybe the style just got a bit old. All in all v enjoyable and pretty fun, had St Elmo's Fire vibes

absolutely cracking album, again id give it a 4.5 but i cant so imma give it a 4 because its not quite a 5 star - didnt really got a lot of variety but what i did get was a whole load of good music

"You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" is honestly a really fun song, but the decision to include that first minute about offering your throat to the wolf was a very strange one indeed. 7.

Rock con mezcla. Recuerda a un músical.

Hilarious and dramatic while still sounding good. 8

Surprisingly cheerful in spite of all the hellish imagery, hits the vein of 80s ballad rock right in the middle. Complete with a healthy helping of theatrical cheese.

I like this kind of operatic rock music. And albums that progress and have a theme, and songs with multiple medodic shifts in tone

Pretty damn decent. Every song had a mission statement and it was more like a musical thematically, a bit like a rock opera. And he has a great voice. I’m rating it higher than I normally would because of Paradise which is a classic.

Really enjoyed it. Felt like a theatre production

3 perfect songs, the others are equally great.

better than i thought

Very fun album. Only thing I really didn’t like was the weird intro on track 2. That creeped me out. Also wish it had Hot Patootie on it.

Intriguing soundstage with creative microphone placement and punchy rock tunes

Power ballad. A product of its time. Beautiful from start to finish.

Tom Rundgen

Surprisingly fun with very strong first half. It's a bit too cheesy for me but I am glad I found them.

Felt like a really fun emotional musical. I liked the whole thing. A little short.

Tough to rate! Some of the songs are genuinely funny, or at least goofy enough to be entertaining, like "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" but I'm not just not super into this style of music. "All Revved Up with No Place to Go" is the other standout for me

The ultimate "don't judge a book by its cover" album. Really thought this album would rip as a kid and was so so disappointed by the music within. As an adult, it's just kitschy fun - not really my thing but ol loaf sure can howl

Silly, camp nonsense. But at least it's quite fun, silly, camp nonsense.

its alright

liked most: Paradise by the Dashboard Light as background music it was really nice the songs are so long tho too many rock ballads for me

Rock ballads go hard, but this was all just for a big laugh right? Right?

First song was really good, not sure I'd come back to a lot of the rest. Definitely a certain vibe but that vibe is rare and a bit corny to me.

Heard many of the songs on this record but first time listening to the entire album. It was decent but the sound/ production quality is horrible so I'm subtracting a star

It was alright, I don't have many feelings about it.

Bat Out of Hell is the most maximalist record in the project and it earns that designation completely — every song enormous, every arrangement operatic, every emotional stake raised to the point where subtlety isn’t just absent but actively unwelcome. Jim Steinman’s name is right there on the cover alongside Meat Loaf’s, which tells you everything about where the vision came from. The songs are his; the voice that makes them land rather than collapse under their own weight is somebody else’s entirely. That voice is the genuine article. Meat Loaf commits to the drama without a single wink, which is the only way this material works — ironic distance would kill it instantly. Roy Bittan’s piano gives the whole thing a Springsteen-adjacent muscularity that grounds the bombast just enough, and “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” remains one of the great absurd achievements in rock history: eight minutes, a baseball play-by-play in the middle, and somehow it earns every second. The honest verdict is guilty pleasure rather than essential listening — fun in a way that’s completely specific to what this record is doing, without generating the pull that earns regular rotation. That’s a different kind of three than the same-samey records that have landed here recently. This one connects; it just connects to something that doesn’t quite demand return visits on its own merits. The algorithm’s autoplay into Eye of the Tiger after this felt less like a non sequitur and more like a logical conclusion. The record apparently has a type, and the type knows exactly what it is.

I get the whole tongue in cheek musical theater thing and it's not to be taken seriously. It does have some good moments, but the songs are just too long and repetitive for their amount of original ideas. Might get back to this some day, but not regularly.

5/10 - Not my thing at all. Some of the album is striking but for the most part I just found myself wanting to skip it.

Not bad

Rock Opera 🦇 paradise by the dashboard light

This is so melodramatic and overwrought that it becomes funny at some point. It sounds like a parody of what it should be.

liked it more than I was expecting to.

i don’t know how i felt about this. it was cool

So damn cheesy that it‘s charming

As a teenager, I didn’t really see where this weird, bombastic, over-the-top album was coming from, but I liked it a lot. Obviously there’s much to appeal to teenage boys. Now, in 2026, the album sounds like it could be the soundtrack to a jukebox musical of teenage boys called HORNY or HORMONES. Over the years I’ve come to realize why it sounds the way it does; Jim Steinman’s style definitely owes a lot to Broadway. Also in 2026, you really hear the prevailing attitude to women in 1970s rock: they are merely vessels for male pleasure or manipulative harpies using their feminine wiles to trick men into marriage. Back in the 1970s it was all in good fun and didn’t raise any eyebrows, and the thrill, catchiness and humor of the a song like “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” is undeniable. Fortunately, Ellen Foley’s fiery performance on the album, and Karla DeVito’s equally great performance in the videos and on tour helps to counter-balance the misogyny of it all. Teenage me: 4.5 stars 2026 me: 2.5 stars

This type of corny, overwrought 70s balladry typically isn't my thing, but I ended up being won over by just how ridiculous and theatrical it was. The story is absurdly theatrical, being about a boy who gets into a motorcycle accident and tries to come back to life to get back with his crush. Meat Loaf matches this concept with ridiculously theatrical vocals. On every track he completely commits every emotion he's trying to get across, especially his passionate caterwauling on the ballads. Despite its goofiness, the music is technically very impressive, with Jim Steinman's compositions calling for extremely complex and bombastic performances from all the musicians involved. The guitar work from Todd Rundgren is especially well done, with some great solos peppered throughout the tracklist. This isn't the kind of thing I can see myself returning to frequently, but I can't help but admire how much everyone involved committed to something so over the top.

6 - what Springsteen could be if he knew how to sing and was more theatrical

Standouts: Bat Ot of Hell, Heaven Can Wait, Paradise By the Dashboard Light

I've listened to this one several times over the years. It always feels like I'm just listening to an OK musical soundtrack. It's completely over the top, which is fun, but Meat Loaf's voice isn't all that special and the songs all feel like lesser borrowed ideas from other greater artists. All of that averages out to about a 3 for my taste.

6/1/26. First time listening to Meat Loaf. Very theatrical and big sounding, as well as catchy. Feel like a lot of quotes I heard adults say growing up came from this record.

Two 5/5 songs. Otherwise, not my cup of tea.

Theater kids doing rock 'n' roll. Meatloaf could really sing though.

My mother loved Meatloaf, I've never quite seen the appeal

You can’t really help but get drawn into the grandiose nature of this one. And if nothing else it’s at least an easy, fun kind of listen. I definitely preferred the first half and it either tailed off or I was just a bit exhausted by the end.

Just brings back fond memories of the ultimate act of teenage rebellion. Putting a quid in the jukebox, programming in Bat out of Hell 3 times in a row, immediately leaving the pub, and letting the clientele suffer for 30mins. As for the album, it’s not real music is it, it is what it originally was, rock theatre. It has its moments and some good humour. But ultimately it’s a bit too silly and theatrical for me.

Like listening to an Opera. Meatloaf was clearly inspired by the theater and Freddie Mercury. Paradise by the Dashboard Light will forever remind me of a middle school dance, but I kind of like that memory. What a classic. This song, at least for me, moves the album from a 2 to a 3.

Better than most music in this style, but it's still giving dad making rock opera a bit, especially on the ballads. The piano songs are sickening, if you excluded them this would be really good.

strange experience, don't necessarily think that i'll be returning to anything except for maybe paradise by the dashboard light (but i still prefer the glee version). overall, don't know that i vibe with rock operas. - heaven can wait could work for me if it was slowed down slightly and sung as a ballad by a woman. - honestly surprised there's not a 2000s jukebox musical based on this album because i think that more of this album could work for me if it was reworked in this way.

I love Hot Patootie but this is too much Meatloaf.

Strongly not for me, but blessedly short for an epic.

Bat Out of Hell You Took the Words Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) Two Out of Three Ain't Bad Paradise by the Dashboard Light

More theatrical than I realized. Don’t need to listen again, but very respectable!

Hoodne Ghost busters, asi verce by se to mozna libilo, spis tak 3.5, rozhodne lepsi polovina

divertido

No fav song

If I were in a better mood I would probably enjoy making fun of this. So over the top and overdone it is wild. Not fun to listen to, maybe I'll try again on a better day. His name is Robert Paulson.

3* actually enjoyed but wouldn’t listen to a lot

Fun concept album that lacks the umph to give it anything more than a middle of the road rating

C’est ok

Honestly, I enjoyed it much better than I thought I would. I was expecting it to be goofy, and it kind of is, but the vocals are great and the music fun.

Fun orchestral rock. Not my favorite but was still a good listen in the background while I worked.

Operatic. Classical! The rock infused with the organ: love.

Oh Lord. Here it is. Always hated this. Too theatrical and cliche. Remember those grainy sweaty videos. Remember all the terrible pub karaoke. But, in the spirit of trying to give all albums on here a fair listen, I donned my headphones as I didn’t want anybody to catch me listening to this and thinking it was my own choice. Before long I’d blown my cover, as I was belting out all of those cheesey lyrics, wishing I could be taken back to those stupid karaoke nights. I felt ready to show all those tosspots how it should be done. I rather enjoyed myself actually. 3 surprise stars, and never to be repeated. My inner Meat Loaf must remain suppressed.

5.8/10

Didn’t expect to like this one at all because it looked (and was) very intense and loud. But it ended up giving musical? Some good harmonies and melodies. Wait it actually is from a rock musical called bat out of hell but the musical is partly based inn the bat out of hell album by meat loaf and these were the retired for the musical. Fun!

Acceptable but over blown

I giggled at the baseball part.

Me lembra tenacious D as vezes. Talvez foi inspiração pro jack black?

I'm conflicted by this album. Who doesn't love 'biker-dive-bar opera' as a genre? The theatrical pageantry of it all! And by the time the live version of Bat Out Of Hell is played as the last track, I'm reminded of the talent involved in writing those arrangements. But I think that's exactly the problem, the live versions are full of embellishments, flourishes, and are Broadway show pieces. But for me the mix of the album lacks that same expression and energy. The whole album lacks the bottom end, and the drums lack clarity in the mix. A live performance might get a 5, but the studio album gets a 3.

Certainly epic.

Bat Out of Hell is an epic rock opera written by Jim Steinman as a modern take on the Peter Pan story. Honestly,.what else do you need to know? Well, other than the fact that it's performed by a long haired, famously sweaty man named Meat Loaf. Want to know what's crazier than every sentence you just read? It works. All of it works. Most of this is a credit to Meat Loaf and the way he fully commits to the source material. Is it kinda cheesy and over the top? Sure it is, but Meat Loaf believes it so you do too. Simple as that.

Je m'attendais à pire donc en vrai ça va, quelques idées originales, quelques belles balades. Un peu trop grandiloquent quand même. Playlist pick : Bat Out of Hell - un peu par défaut

Solid album, long behind songs.

Looking at the visuals I was pretty certain it would be metal - band name font, album title and cover - it was a funny surprise :D 7/10 Very good music for its times, enjoyable to listen to, has strong and satisfying finale, I like albums that do that. But will I comeback to it? Probably not, nothing particularly unique or grabbing my attention about it.

Technically good but not for me.

Thrifted this bad boy on CD on a trip to BHAM with Anne last month. LOVE it.

Mouais

My mum is a fan of this album, certainly the title track, so I'd say I'm familiar with it but I've never sat down with it myself. It's a kind of dramatic rock that I've never been that into, but I can't help but smile at some of its cheesiness. The whole thing has a kind of musical theatre quality to it, which gives an interesting feel to some songs. Not that surprising that it's been adapted for stage (apparently really quite badly) I aught to enjoy the instrumentation more, particularly how much piano there is, but stuff like "Heaven Can Wait" and "For Crying Out Loud" just feels so completely stifled by the vocals for me. "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" plays into the strengths of the album very nicely, hard to say whether I prefer it or the title track. I can appreciate what it's doing, but it doesn't resonate with me specifically. Probably a 2.5, but I'll be kind and round up

Can definitely feel the musical theatre inspiration, it was an okay listen but I won't be listening again I don't think

I actually kinda liked this album. A lot of it is very over dramatic piano slamming, but it’s supposed to be as a rock opera. I found it interesting to listen to but it probably won’t make the cut to my favorite albums.

My dad and Jack Black probably love this

My memory of seeing Meatloaf was at Knebworth when he had a cast for his broken leg and was pelted off stage by everyone throwing mud at him, wrong act for the crowd there to see Deep Purple and Scorpions. Was never a fan and this album is overplayed, overblown and just over produced. Can see why a lot like it though.

The title track is pretty good (although a touch long). The rest are generic power ballads. I was expecting to enjoy this but it meandered into poor man’s Elton John territory.

A light 6/10. I get the appeal—it’s dramatic, over the top, almost theatrical… but it just didn’t fully hook me. I respect the ambition, but it’s not something I’d come back to much.

Holy shit, everyone should read about the history of this record. This is one where the context really helps. It is a rock opera, so the lyrics provide important context too. The short version is that Meatloaf and Jim Steinman worked together on several touring musical theater productions. During a National Lampoon tour, Steinman was writing songs for a Peter Pan musical. That musical was never really performed, but the songs were reworked into Bat Out of Hell, which would go on to be the best-selling album of the decade and one of the best-selling albums of all time (~40 million copies). Meatloaf and Steinman had a really hard time finding a record company willing to produce the record. They ended up practicing Bat Out of Hell for 1.5 years before Clevland International Records picked it up. Album sales started slowly but within six months it became a bestseller and continues to sell hundred of thousands of copies a year. Meatloaf and Steinman went in different directions and the next two Meatloaf albums bombed. Meatloaf ultimately went into bankruptcy, rebounding somewhat we they teamed up together for a sequel. The both died, 9 months apart, to the day. There are so many parts of that story that are hard to believe. How did the lyrics emerge from a Peter Pan story? How did the album sell more copies than any other album of the decade? I mean it is good, but is it that good? How can someone go from selling millions of records to financially destitute over several years? Anyway, this is a fun album. Over the top, often cheesy, lyrics. Some of the songs have some decent instrumentation, there were moments that stood out for sure, but nothing particularly groundbreaking. This is, after all, essentially a Broadway Musical with an ode to rock. All this is not to say that I didn’t enjoy the record. I did. I just don’t understand how this album could follow only Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors and Pink Floyd’s DSotM as the longest standing top charts in the UK. Maybe you just had to be there. The album is certainly unique, I'll give it that. That said, there isn't anything here that isn't done better elsewhere.

Surprisingly solid album.

okay straight elton john!

This is non-serious, camp, theatrical, rock and roll. A high 3 from me.

Meat Loaf gets a surprisingly high 3 from me, it was like a more theatrical and less self-serious Springsteen. I loved the big moments and one of the ballads got me, some of it was too much in the direction of stage musical for my tastes but what a fun record.

Progressive rock, huge in scale and maximalist production. In my head meatloaf was a guitar band, surprised to find it was very much piano led rock like Elton John, but more progressive. Didn’t love it, I see the appeal but I won’t come back to this album.

Pretty epic

It's pretty OK, I suppose. It's pretty funny that he seems to have made a whole "opera" about a one night stand.

I think this is the first time I have ever intentionally listened to this album yet I knew all the songs but the last one well enough to sing along. Just from hearing them on radio and in TV and movies. Probably deserves more than three stars of being one of the top selling albums of all time but it's not a repeat listen for me.

A classic, but not one that I'll listen to often.

More Rock Operas! More Piano in rock music, Litschy

This is as over-the-top as I had expected and hoped. I feel like I'm listening to an original cast recording of a Broadway production, which makes sense given Jim Steinman wanted to do just that. As such, I'm not a musicals or Broadway person, so this isn't for me. But it's fun and ridiculous and definitely worth a listen. 3.5 stars.

That cover looks like it's straight out of a metal album. Suffice to say, my expectations were wrong. Epic rock opera jams are fun and dandy on their own, but with a full album, it can get exhausting. Meatloaf has some good vocals and good tunes, but, nothing that really stands out to me that Queen doesn't do way better. It's fun to listen to, at least.

Jack Black's dad is a hypocrit, he played in meat loaf. In all seriousness, expected a heavier tone from the artwork on the album cover. Instead we got Elton John with more guitarwork. The movements are impressive but not all of them land and make the songs meander as a result.

I think on another listen i’d be more into this and i wasn’t not into it but i couldnt get over that some of them sounded like parodys (i guess theres a genre of meatloaf parody). Some very singalongable songs.

Is it me, or does Meatloaf just sound instantly dated? All the stars for Paradise by the Dashboard Lights ... that's the one song that doesn't seem to age. Also note ... one of the best album covers ever!

Super cheesy and theatrical with about as many hits as misses. Almost certainly won’t come back to the album, but I’ll return to the highlights. Favorite Songs: “Bat Out of Hell”, “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad”, “For Crying Out Loud” Least Favorite Song: “All Revved Up with No Place to Go” Mid 3.

rock gitu gitu yee

Very good album

Should hate but some really enjoyable tunes

It was alright. Bat out of hell is great. Some bangers and some mehs. Better than expected

This was surprisingly better than I thought it would be. Meat loaf's theatrical style was unique enough to keep the album feeling fresh. I don't appreciate some of the more misogynistic lyrics but of a time I guess.

i liked it

Clearly these guys are all in on this album. Surprised to read it in a top 10 in albums sold, so obviously appeals to lost of people. It was a bit too theatrical for my taste and aside from the novelty factor and the icon Meatloaf was, not really a huge fan of his music.

This is pretty much exactly what I was expecting; a dramatic, maximalist, theatrical album. Honestly, while it’s not my style at all, I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. That said, I won’t be adding it to my regular listening rotation.

Pretty basic but a fun, epic, energetic album. It’s doesn’t stand out much, but definitely has its moments. Not much else to say. Enjoyable album but hardly special. 7/10

A master of the rock & roll ballad, Meatloaf loves to add the dramatics into his songs and isn’t afraid to sing a 10-minute jam. All around, his music is very sound and I like his passion and energy in every track. I don’t know that this is his best album, but having the timeless classic Paradis By The Dashboard Light immediately elevates this whole compilation.

Intro Song, "Bat out of Hell", an absolute banger.

its kind of trash, but likeable trash

Before even listening, I know that 15 minutes of live performance tagged onto the end of a record is not why this album is on this list. So starting today I'm deciding to find the original standard release and listen to that instead whenever this site links me to another deluxe extended edition for some reason. Anyway... This album is curious. It's produced like every song is a stadium anthem, but I don't think all of these songs fit that bill. They were afraid to get small when the moment called for it. Sounds like they were aiming for the ultimate big album, and forgot to consider the individual songs when they made that decision. As a result it's frequently emotionally disconnected from itself. And also a lot of these tracks are just mediocre songs that they decided were finished being written anyway. Now it's not nearly all bad because a couple of these songs *are* stadium anthems. There are some standout great hooks and memorable moments, but too frequently they aren't well support by also having a great arrangement and aren't songs that are good for their entire runtime. I get why it's on the list, but it's just an okay album all things considered. 3.0/5

Good god.... okay, you've gotta respect the POMP and the commitment to the bit, and the BOMBASITY of it all -- including Meat Loaf's freaking pipes. Still, mostly sounded like a rock musical about one night of horny teenagers being horny....

Honestly, the title and album art does not fit the music on the album. I was expecting something.. harder, more metal, or more gritty. This is something in the vain of Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, or Elton John. It's fine. But I would've hated to buy this album in the 70s based on this cover and then get like.. "Born in the USA" ass vibes lol

Can’t take this serious. the songs are good but the dialogue and a lot of the vocals really bring this down. The lowest possible 3 stars

I can see why some love it. I can see why people hate it. It’s very of its time, lyrics are pretty bad in general, but I think the album achieves what it set out to, so who am I to criticise

Did not expect this type of music with such a cover. Idk if I return to this album but it was not bad

Prima album, heel corny

This album is very nice, the production is cool, the lyrics are a bit repetitive, the lyrics are of a high pop rock that doesn't compromise on low pop rock.

no idea what to rate this tbh. felt misled by the cover but it wasnt bad, jjust seemed like a lot of other stuff ive heard.

I was not familiar with Meat Loaf's music, so this was a nice discovery ! I enjoyed the album as a whole, although no track emerged as a favorite.

Not exactly my type of music. I feel like this is stereotypical jock music from those older movies. This album is just odd.

His best

Interesting. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Had some good stuff not really any bad songs. Solid 3

Pretty good. Nothing really stuck to me though. Very 70s 80s ballad type. 5.1/10

7/10 - Really liked this, long orchestral rock songs

First off, shoutout Todd Rundgren. I feel like his production and insight to this album is what makes it sound so good. This is a very polished album. Music wise, it was not bad either. Meatloaf can definitely sing and it’s interesting to hear him on the non balled like songs. Think this album would be better if the first and last songs were trimmed down.

Im not big into musicals I general but I think this album stands on its own outside of that style. The jaunty piano, pushing vocals and heavy rock sounds all come together to make something unique

Not my personal favorite, but this is classic anthemic 70s rock.

Yeah, not for me. Great production quality, and well rounded album though.

I just found out that Bob from Fight Club actually has a secret life as a rock star. While my brain is trying its best to process this information, I can say that this album has a grand sound that mimics a rock spectacle. It has a lot of soul and it just sounds good. It doesn't rely on typical song structures and it does its own thing. One downside that stands out is that songs tend to drag a little, but overall it was a pleasant experience. My favorite tracks are the opening "Bat Out of Hell" which sets the tone perfectly and "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad".

Oh, Meat Loaf made the cut?? Interesting. Admittedly, I only know him from his acting. Specifically from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and as Robert Paulson in Fight Club, one of my all time favorite movies. The dude could really act well. As a singer though, this is a little too silly, too light, and has way too much filler for my liking. The first song, “Bat Out of Hell” is pretty good. Not amazing, but he’s got a hell of a set of pipes on him and can hit those high notes spectacularly. It’s my favorite song on the album. Everything else is either a slow ballad that I don’t care for, or filler that just drags on for longer than I really want or need it to. “All Revved Up with No Place to Go” has a pretty neat sax solo that I thought was worth mentioning, I loved that. I still enjoyed this album, but I’ve got a lot of nitpicks with it and things that didn’t really vibe with me. It’s immensely theatrical and to that degree I conclude it must be a theater kids wet dream. I am not, nor have I ever been or ever will be a theater kid, so the charm doesn’t really register with me. It’s 46 minutes long, which is always a good length for an album, but I can only say I only really enjoyed a single song. Nothing was unbearable, but nothing was objectively great either to me. “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” is fine, it has moments of greatness, but it just goes on and on and I lose interest about halfway through. This album is fine, but I for sure won’t be returning to it. The few and far between moments when it’s over the top and fast paced, it’s also generally a bit repetitive and drags, but those are my favorite parts of the album. The rest is just a bunch of filler and heavily filled with lighter ballads that I just do not care for. I almost want to give this a 2, but in the rare moments it’s good, it’s more than worthy of a 3. We’ll call this one a 3.2 and move on to the next one. At the bare minimum, it was actually really cool to finally hear the late, great Meat Loaf sing. Now I can say truthfully and wholeheartedly that I preferred him much more as an actor and really mean that.

Not my typical style of music, but I just have too much sentimental value of listening to my parents play this all the time when I was young.

A little self indulgent for my taste but had some decent tracks. I will say I about bursted out laughing when he started “praying for the end of time.” Regretting my 3 out of 5 for the to british album. Definitely better than that one

Did think meatloaf was a metal band so this was a bit of a surprise. This is quite theatrical, and I do recognise some of the songs already from my mum singing single lines from them lol 3

Rock musicals still very much not my thing but this one's not bad.

Nice album with awsome playing and nice theme through out.

Thought it was going to be more interesting than it was but out of songwriting, production and intrigue... two out of three ain't bad.

I can see why this is popular and considered to be great, but I don't like this album very much. It's just a musical with distorted guitars. I don't typically like musicals so this doesn't do much for me. That said, Meat Loaf is a vocal tour de force and the songwriting is good.

Utterly silly.

Cheesy, campy, very 70s. Like a time capsule

I’m not a huge fan of meatloaf. I mean…it’s good…don’t get me wrong..it’s good music…he made good music.

A band I’m aware of by name only. I’ve seen the musical Neverland so I was intrigued to read that this album was developed from it and later on had its own stage show as well. I’m sure this would be more enjoyable/interesting for me with additional context from a show; and sometimes musical soundtracks can stand completely on their own, but I’m surprised to hear about how well the album sold.

I always subconsciously loathed any time I heard someone or mention to Meat Loaf. I have no good reason why, perhaps the name sounded pretentious? I don't really feel that way now after listening to Bat Out Of Hell. I hadn't heard any Meat Loaf song or him talking or anything in general except for "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" but I remember not liking it, too weird I suppose. I only remembered the song now when I got this album because of three things I remember from it, Meat Loaf song, duet with female vocalist and long song. The song on a re-listen was much better received by myself, for sure. Though I do wish the song was more like the first 3 minutes of the said song which is S-tier, but rest of the song is maybe a strong B. This album seemed to me very meticulously done. Just everything about it, every minute detail is exactly in the right place at the right time, just so WELL done. The album really gives off the impression that this is an album created by a perfectionist where every possible perfection was perfected. Hope I got the point across enough, but I really do feel that impression. (I don't mean well done as in I extremely like it, more like it was well thought-out.) The backstory of the album that I read on Wikipedia was a real trip and a half, just like the multi-part 8 minute songs featured here. Highlight Song/s: "You Took The Words Right From My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)" and "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"

Some familiar tunes. Good vibe.

Not bad. I liked the piano rock elements, but I don’t think this was amazing as sales numbers would imply. 3.5/5

It's not my favorite but not the worst.

I know more about his guy as an actor than as a musician. Do the time warp robert Paulson. I guess I know paradise by the dashboard lights. And its a fine song. A bit too melodramatic if thats the word for it. Performative? And the rest is about the same. His voice is fine. The music is fine. The songwriting is fine. I will say that album cover is very sick. In a sort of dorky kinda way. I think its too ballad heavy for my tastes. At the end of the day its ok. About as middle of the road as you can get. I can see what others who love it might see but for me its just alright

What is Rocky Horror Picture Show was just one guy and it rocked more? Bonus points: put that guy in Rocky Horror. This was real fun, I really enjoyed this listen. The duet especially was killer. Took me many years to get around to listening to any Meat Loaf and it was worth the wait, I'll have to check out more of his stuff.

It was fine

Amazing record. So theatrical. A 3,8 for me.

It feels too overdone for me. Admittedly, I think my opinion improved a bit when I read that this was developed from a musical, as that explains the direction of this to some degree. The songs are well composed. I might like them more presented in a different way, but I really wasn't into this particular hard rock production on some of the songs. I did like the second half much better than the first. The standouts for me were "Heaven Can Wait" and "For Crying Out Loud". 3/5 because I actually liked it towards the end.

I honestly thought Meat Loaf was a nu metal artist (the name gives off the same vibe as Limp Bizkit and Korn to me) until last night, when I saw that some of the reviews referred to Bat out of Hell as "theater kid music." After listening to the album... I'd say that pretty much checks out. I definitely wasn't expecting music in the realm of Elton John and Queen, but the LP isn't a bad listen – maybe a bit bombastic, but the writing is solid and the theatrics sell the experience more than they hurt it. I found the title track to be particularly fun! That said, some of the slower ballads like "Heaven Can Wait" and "For Crying Out Loud" (the latter of which is nearly nine minutes long) didn't do much for me, which kinda dragged down the wider experience. How this became one of the best-selling albums ever is beyond my understanding. Highlights: Bat out of Hell, All Revved Up with No Place to Go, Paradise by the Dashboard Light

this was surprisingly decent but a bit overly theatrical especially the last couple of tracks

I wonder if anyone has seen this album cover and read the title and thought “this must be a really heavy album!” Then you put it on and it sounds like like Rock Horror picture show then Black Sabbath. Which is fine.

I like it for its sheer over-the-topness. Three Out of Five Aint Bad. 6.6 Fav track: Bat Out of Hell Least fav: For Crying Out Loud

I've always enjoyed this album. It's super theatrical and really fun. Bunch of rockers on it too. Bat Out of Hell is a really strong opener. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth is such a good song about young love (or lust) and Paradise By The Dashboard Light hits it well. All Revved Up also covers that teenage experience pretty well. All in all just a fun album.

A couple of big songs on this album. Overall pretty good. Meat Loaf always seemed like a lower tier star though.

sorry but Paradise by the Dashboard Light slaps and so does the glee version i don’t make the rules

I really love the drama of Meat loaf- especially his ballads! But I don’t think I can pull the trigger on a 4-5 star for this album.

Generelt set flot produceret.

Solid 70s rock album, it's probably not something I would revisit but I can see why they were such a popular band.

Is this the corniest album of all time? Surprisingly that this is the best selling album of all time in Australia. Sometimes the cheese really works and sometimes it can just be a little excessive. Like it’s stupid but I think I like it. Favorite songs were Bat Out Of Hell, You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth, and Paradise By The Dashboard Lights.

Two good songs, and the rest are fillers. I don't understand the hype for Meat Loaf i'm sorry Favorites: All Revved Up with No Place to Go, Paradise by the Dashboard Light Least favorites: You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth, For Crying Out Loud Rating (out of 10): 6.5/10

Cinematic. Operatic. Overwrought. Over the top. But fun.

To be fair a pretty decent listen, its a rock and opera blend which i think sort of works. Im too young to know a lot about Meat loaf i had only really just heard of him so went into this fairly blind. Id say it was a nice suprise but wouldn't probably listen to much of the songs again but was a good experiance for this project. Standout song 'Bat out of hell'.

A LOT less heavy than I expected based on the cover LMAO. So theatrical!! I do like the theatrics of it, and like my dad told me, his voice and storytelling is pretty great. I liked this! It was enjoyable. I do love me some big sounding theatrical songs so, yeah. 3 ⭐️

Has the feel of a soundtrack more than a rock album. I was surprised about the fact that it’s mostly prog rock. It was a good time but not something I can see myself going back to.

3/5 This was a nice album. Just maybe not entirely my genre.

This is catchy as hell and I love a good meat loaf

Some tracks weren’t really my type BUT (but) there were a few bangers so I’ll give jt a good 67/100

Not bad. Rock.

Like a soundtrack of rock musical. Good singing and some interesting songs.

Second song was really weird (not in a good way). The opening was really strong. The rest were also pretty good.

exactly the type of shit i'd expect from meat loaf (complimentary).

Meat Loaf may be best known for some of his film roles in Rocky Horror Picture Show and Fight Club, but believe it or not he also released a very respectable and somewhat iconic Rock Opera album nearly 50 years ago. This fun and chipper release has a lot of different moods to it, some a throwback to a time before the rocking 70s, some very present in the current day and age this was made, and some that are much more timid and emotional pieces that really give this album the swing it needs to be to make it one big overarching story. In retrospective this album probably rocked for the time it came out, but I am not afraid to say I find this project to be a bit cheesy in the modern day and age and not something I would ever particularly go back to. It is cool in concept but feels like a popular release in a genre of albums that have a lot better products coming out around the same time period, Meat Loaf simply got lucky by having a kickass album cover to an album that feels very booming and grand. Nuff said.

I was in a bad mood when I listened so I might have scored it low. I appreciate the drama and showmanship. I just was somehow not getting into it. Perhaps it’s not a first thing in the morning album.

I really appreciate the hot/cold nature of the reviews - so many ones and fives lol. Im not a big fan of Meat Loaf - and not a fan of show tunes at all. This music is just too corny for me, and a whole album about a guy chasing after a girl he likes as if he’s a middle schooler is below my pay grade. At least Les Mis is about revolution. But the musicianship js fantastic and I will always give someone credit for being all in with what they’re doing. And can’t argue with the cultural impact this album had. So for those points I’ll be generous with my rating.

cool jack black school of rock vibes but not really for me

This album is the definition of "too much", but it's fun to listen to. The Steinman style of song-titleing (not sure if that is a word) has surely influenced loads of songwriters after him

Fun fact: A former BF and I used to turn on Paradise by the Dashboard Light when leaving a local spot and bet on whether we’d make it home while it was still playing. This album is so operatic – I could totally imagine watching this performed live, not as a concert but as theater. I don’t know how much I like individual songs so much as I find myself bopping around to them.

Campy as hell but it's a fun listen

Some recognizable songs. wouldn’t listen to it again on my accord. Not for me but not a bad album.

Knowing how massively popular this album is, I couldn’t really grasp why it’s held in the same kind of legendary status as artists like Michael Jackson. I can tell it’s big, dramatic, and carefully crafted, but its appeal just didn’t quite reach me.

I grew up loving this album, so it is difficult for me to rate it fairly. How do you rank an album when you find yourself mouthing the words and anticipating the guitar and piano riffs? I think I need to separate the music (a theatre kid's wet dream) from the lyrics (an incel's wet dream). For example, I used to really love the opening to the second track when I was a kid cause I thought it was clever, but listening as an adult, that section (and many parts of this album) are overly lustful with corny bro punchlines. And don't get me started on the car sex song. This one ends up in the middle of the road for me, with excellent music and great vocals, but a yearnful horny misogynistic theme that taints the whole picture. 5/10

Definitely heard this is one before. It's a good album. Great melodies, classic tunes. Never owned it and won't rush out to buy it, but definitely a good listen! Some classic hits on this one.

Dads love this one

Title track best track, good.

Érezhetően operett, van néhány jó dallam

Vibes are repetitive. And I dont like super long tracks.

awwwww yeaaaaahhh it's the bus driver from the Spice World movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure bro i guess man what the hell

Meat seemed to continue his Rocky Horror journey with this symphonic pastiche of show tunes and rock n' roll. Seemed to hit the mark in '77 and still and ok listen even now

Overblown and large-lunged power ballads galore. I completely understand why my parents enjoy this, very dramatic and very silly at times, while also being very sweet and heartfelt, but it's nigh impossible to take Meatloaf without a grain or two of salt (and pepper). I was not expecting this to be as fun as it was, but I don't think it's something I'll return to unless very drunk and jovial. I definitely see Meat Loaf's influence on South Park's Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

I used to frequent pool halls in my early 20s and the only stuff I liked even a little bit was Meat Loaf or The Doors. I’d stack my money on the long songs from both and one time this guy got in my face because he was upset his Disturbed and Papa Roach songs were taking too long to play.

Surprising album for me.

Not really my taste however, there are a few parts of songs. I like some parts of the album feel disconnected from other parts.

I understand the rock opera nature of it, but it isn't really something I'd want to regularly listen to.

ehh a little all over the place personally.

Gute Unterhaltung, super Stimme.

Long songs but theatrical and fun. Meat loaf did "I would do anything for love" song.

Rock opera is a nice way to describe this album... like that's the definition of it. cool rock melodics with awesome pianos and great vibes.

When I re-listened to this album, there was one word that came to mind to describe it: epic.

Late 70's rock opera-esque. OK, but not my jam. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a

A dramatic, enigmatic, and enchanting work of art. Not something I would listen to often but I appreciated the exposure to it.

Melodramatic nonsense. Look, I’ve always thought Meatloaf seemed like a nice guy. But I’ve also always found his music rather silly. Despite the “metal” appearance, it’s got more in common with 50s nostalgia and musicals, to my ears. It’s much like “Grease” which I also dislike. I’ll rate this a bit higher than Grease, though, just because Meatloaf was so good in “Fight Club”! 3 stars. Maybe 3.5 stars. It started to win me over near the end.

I'm only familiar with Paradise By the Dashboard Light and Two out of Three Ain't Bad. They're both good. Otherwise, I've never felt a need to listen to this whole album and I was probably right. This is way theatrical/operatic, just completely over the top. It's just too much. It should be the soundtrack for a 1970's film about the plucky high-school theater kids putting on a "rock-and-roll" show to save the town's old theater, but, in the end, the show saves the whole town. +1 for the cover and Paradise By the Dashboard Light.

Dafür wurde der Begriff Bombastrock geschaffen :)

I appreciate Meat Loaf even if I don't enjoy his music a heck of a lot.

The marriage between Broadway and rock and roll has never been better. This album surprised me. It isn’t profoundly great, but the piano work and unapologetic enthusiasm of this album makes it a joy to listen to. If Elton John had not gone pop later in his career, this is the kind of epic rock show tune catalog we might get. I don’t know how much I’ll go back to this, but if I ever want to hear someone play their heart out on piano, I’ll have this in the queue.

Good. Solid rock opera. In your face rock. Lots of great sounds, vocals. Praised by dashboard light is an all time great track. 7/10.

Classic

Paradise by the Dashboard Light je jebena stvar! 3/5, 6/10

His name is Robert Paulson.

It was just okay for me as much as it has some bangers on it

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. I thought it was going to be some heavy metal hard rock, but I actually quite enjoyed it
