Reviews (page 6 of 14)

This was a wild ride to listen through. Felt like I was watching a musical and turns out it was.

Opera rock con mucha influencia del teatro musical. RE over the top y tipo ridiculous pero rrreee divertido y aunque sean canciones largas son muy entretenidas. Y sorprendentemente muy buena letra. Re variado aparte. Por ejemplo hay dos temas mas lentos tipo balada que son Heaven Can Wait y Two Out of Three Ain't Bad y me rre gustaron tmb. Paradise by the dashboard light se siente literalmente como una canción de un musical a un extent todavía mayor que el resto de temas, y tiene una parte toda funky q me gustó btw.

I see the appeal of Mr. Loaf. Meat’s performance is laid out for the world to see. Like the dish that he takes his name from, I could enjoy Meat Loaf every so often, but it’s not something I could consume every day.

Not what I was expecting after looking at the cover art but a really good rock album.

Classic album. The theatrical production is second to none.

facorite track: paradise by the dashboard light. Overall score: 8.4/10

Another one I'm incapable of being objective about because I've known this album back to front since the womb. It's like if movie theater popcorn was music. The kind drowning in butter and that you pour chocolate candy into. FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD, YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU

I don't really even know what to do with this, it's so over the top, but at the same time really well done? They FULLY committed to this bit.

Shades of Bruce Springsteen?

Very enjoyable, pompous, theatrical over-the-top pop-rock

I knew a few songs on this album already surely most people do, overall I enjoyed this album

I liked this more than expected. I thought the theatrical nature would wear thin but the choruses are undeniably catchy on most songs

Not what I expected, by the cover I thought this was gonna be another metal album, but it wasn't anything like it, kinda surprised and probably will lisent to it again.

Cheesy and over the top, but rather fun nevertheless

I want to ice skate to heaven can wait, I love the theatrics

This album felt like a warm hug! 🥹 Album rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

yes!!!! this is what the rock opera is all about!!!!

Rip roaring. At work.

one word. epic. fave song is “heaven can wait” - wooooow what an absolutely beautiful song! i am in love with the piano and chord progression 😭

I don't care much for the biker vibe but the rather diverse operatic style more than makes up for it. Great work.

Bombastic rock, pretty fun

Yeah, this is a solid rock ballad album. 4/5.

Theatrical, not to listen to too many times, but impressive

Loved it, always fun, but wow the first and last song go on forever!!

I'm dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun 1001 Albums Generator 26 (05/08/2025) I was surprised to find an album by Meat Loaf on here. I knew that he made music, and I love his part in Rocky Horror Picture Show, but I had only ever heard I'd Do Anything For Love before, which doesn't even appear on this album. I didn't know much about Mr. Meat's career. Turns out this album has somewhere in the top 10 highest sales for any album ever. What the fuck. Okay Mr. Loaf, you have my attention. Equally attention grabbing is the incredible album cover, drawn up by Richard Corben, featuring a shadowy figure driving a motorcycle through a graveyard with a demonic-looking tombstone behind him. This may be the most power metal cover I've ever seen on an album that is not power metal. The opening title track is iconic. It is a quintessential piece of progressive rock, with more changes than I can count. In spite of this, it still manages to have an absolutely memorable, albiet cheesy, chorus. Like many songs on this album, it is essentially a self-contained rock opera. Bat Out Of Hell was written by Jim Steinman as an homage to his love of "car crash songs" and tells the story of a young man who wanted to take the love of his life out of their small town but dies driving his motorcycle to her. The whole 10 minute song is great, but the way the outro is structured is pop rock perfection, with everything cutting out as Meat Loaf screams "Then I'm dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun". His voice on this song, especially at the end, is so over-the-top but it is perfect for this style of music. The other multi-part song is the incredibly titled Paradise By The Dashboard Light. While not as strong as the title track, this song certainly earns its runtime, with the jazz funk baseball announcer breakdown near the middle being my favorite part. The first three minutes, which sound straight out of Rocky Horror, are also expertly done. All Reved Up With No Place To Go is the most fun song here. Similar to Paradise, it sounds like a classic rock 'n' roll tune, you know that blues inspired 50's stuff, but it's turned up to 11, in both volume and tempo. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth had real single potential but is certainly brought down by the weird spoken word intro that goes on for like a minute before the song actually starts. This is one example on this album of Meat Loaf and Steinman's ambitions getting in the way of their art, as opposed to helping it along. The sound of prog legend Todd Rundgren's guitar is essential to this album. Meat Loaf said that Rundgren recorded all of his parts of the title track in 45 minutes. Considering that this song is 10 minutes long, featuring multiple layers of pretty difficult guitar parts, this essentially implies that it was recorded in a single take. This is absolutely amazing. The two worst songs on this album, Heaven Can Wait and For Crying Out Loud are made worse by their lack of this guitar work. For Crying Out Loud at least has great orchestration played by New York Philharmonic and some cool build up, Heaven Can Wait in particular really has nothing going on. Favs: Bat Out Of Hell All Revved Up With No Place To Go Paradise By The Dashboard Light Least Fav: Heaven Can Wait

Help! I have fallen into a rock musical cabaret and I cannot get out. Fun album.

tune after massive tune!!!

These songs are so long, but a vibe

Fella had some banging songs

sometimes the over-the-top musical theater kid energy is too much, but i found myself really enjoying it on a lot of this record. feels like being a teenager when all your emotions are constantly dialed up to 10 and everything is the end of the world.

Funny to see how controversial this album is in the reviews. People seem to either really hate it or love it. I liked it a lot! Very theatrical and over the top, a real fun listen. Standouts: Bat Out of Hell, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Paradise By the Dashboard Light Rating: 4.25/5

Too corny to get a 5 star but it's great fun

Undeniably fun, head-banging, sing-a-long madness

Hearing Meatloaf sing "for crying out loud, you know I love you" really hit in ways I didn't expect it to.

Over the top Rock opera at it's finest - a classic album that all of my friends had a copy of back in the late 1970s.

Over the top and enjoyable. Standout songs: Bat out of hell Paradise by the dashboard light

Makes me think of Lupul 🦭

I never truly appreciated / treasured Meat Loaf until he passed. This album was fun -- liked the fast paced dramatics.

Meat Loaf sounds like a twisted version of Elton John as he's slamming away on his piano. This album starts insane and explodes into the awesome duet in Paradise by the Dashboard. It's a hilarious song and the most entertaining here by far. Two Out of Three Ain't Bad also is great. As individual songs, they are weaker and the album mostly is greater than the sum of its parts, but maybe that's just the operatic factor.

Great guitar riffs. Great instrumentals. Long opening song but iconic. Wouldn’t have listened to this on my own, but really enjoyed it.

Love me some Meat Loaf, solid album.

70s Vibe, rockig, "You probably say that to all the Werewolves"

We need more rock operas.

Pure joy. I’m really glad this incarnation overlapped with Marvin Aday’s.

All I knew about Meat Loaf growing up was that I thought it was a stupid name and he did that I will do anythiiiiiiiing for love song. Listening to this makes me wish I hadn’t judged the book by that cover. It’s pretty kick ass!

guapisimo

Some songs go on too long but this is still great fun

Did not appreciate Meat Loaf when I was a teenager. A bit older now and I can see the passion, the artistry in his music now. Talented. Lyrics are a bit bonkers tho

Better than I expected it to be, beautiful voice

I was actually sad none of the other songs were as fun as paradise by the dashboard light, but that was still enough to bump the album to a four

Es hät Ziite gäh, wo de Meat Loaf würkli än Top Act gsii isch. Schöni Lieder - es git anderi Albe, wo na beser sind.

The rest of it is great but Two Out of Three Ain't Bad is still my favorite.

Was this the perfect album to listen to after being mansplained to for 45 minutes in a meeting? Maybe.

Yes, this was a huge album back in the day. Over the top in every way; adolescent melodrama, production, arrangements. Also, I am not sure it has aged as well as other albums that will be timeless. However, this album didn't really pretend to be anything more than it was. It was theatre, spectacle and over the top. And I will give it a 4 just for that reason.

Classic. Nearly a 5.

Heaven can wait reminds me of some song. The lonely night part. All revved up with no place to go is a funkier ACDC song. Paradise by dashboard light is ACDC meets Jazz. For crying out loud also reminds me of some song I can't put my finger quite on.

Who doesn't love some Meatloaf

Bat Out of Hell // You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth // For Crying Out Loud //

Я не буду слушать ебучую рок оперу чуваки, не хочу этим говном питаться

A classic but one I find a bit cheesy at times.

Je m'attendais à du Hair Metal plutôt que du rock théâtral. Je peux pas dire que je suis déçu de m'être trompé là-dessus, ça slap quand même fort

It caught me off guard. I did not expect it to sound so theatre, but I kind of like it.

You want to hate it, but you can’t. So crap it’s good. Feels like a trip to the theatre and a day at a theme park at the same time. Unique, fast moving fun, surprisingly easy album to get through in one sitting. It’ll soon be gone, gone, gone… and you had a great time.

I probably haven't listened to this record since 1982 or 1983. Kind of a remarkable piece of work. Lyrically it's very tongue in cheek, and yet, the music is fairly complex in places, particularly piano and horns. Three major hits. I definitely feel like this channels 1950s music in a very clear and distinct way, which is probably why it had so much appeal. I can't give it a three. It's good enough to deserve better.

Didn't click in my head until I saw someone mention it just how Springsteen this whole album is. Luckily i love Springsteen.

From hell to back and then some, Bat Out of Hell riproars from coast to coast through sheer bombastic moxie, which is as perplexing in thought as it is an improbable success in execution. Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman had unknowingly created a world in which their most out-there musical compositions (in regards to how they could sound) can sit comfortably even with the world's lack of understanding and confusion over its existence. Bat Out of Hell is best experienced with those thoughts in mind and begrudgingly (whether willingly or not) respect its ambition. Favorites: Bat Out of Hell, You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night), All Revved Up With No Place to Go, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Paradise by the Dashboard Light.

Looking for rock a rock opera that doesn’t let up for 40 something minutes, with lyrics that you probably don’t need to sing out loud, but will anyway. Is it sometimes cheesy, sure, is it over the freaking top so many times, of for sure, like 99% of the time. But then again there’s always Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits in the wings when you’re done.

Somehow I was a 70s kid and never knew that this is a rock opera (and goddamn, how many rock operas did this era produce!) Anyway, I always assumed Meatloaf must be heavy metal. I think he and Ozzy conflated in my mind what with the bats and all. But there, in all its 70s glory, self-importance, and theatricality, it is indeed operatic. Meatloaf’s soaring, emotional voice is perfect for this material. The themes of love and heartache work their magic. It’s a ball of cheese, but good cheese.

По мнению А: 4/5 ИТОГОВАЯ ОЦЕНКА: 4/5 (24.02.2025)

Meat Loaf hell yeah

This album is over the top and incredibly bombastic, in the best possible way. Only problem I really have with it is the final song, 'For Crying Out Loud', feels way too overindulgent and is a bit of a low note to end things off on.

4.5/5 Nostalgic and Epic. My best friends family used to play this a lot when I was visiting their cabin. It brings back fond memories of a time less encumbered by adulthood.

Would always listen again; is it objectively a four? Maybe not, but for me it is; love the loaf’s voice and these instrumentals are crazy; faves: paradise by the dashboard light, two out of three ain’t bad, bat out of hell

Not s good as I remember

Some great songs, and then there’s that weird intro to took the words right out of my mouth.

It’s stupid, overblown, bombastic bullshit, but by god is it entertaining. And there is no denying that Meat Loaf had a hell of a pair of pipes. And bitch tits.

8/10. A classic album with some great hits.

Mike, Meat Loaf. Loaf, meet Mike. What a pleasant surprise it was getting my eardrums blown to shreds by this album. A solid 4 out of 5 for me.

I was full of cynicism going into this one, thinking The Meat was little more than a giant cornball, but I thoroughly enjoyed this album. It’s a rip roaring, leather clad symphony. Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad is the highlight for me. Wonderfully constructed ballad. The funk change up in Paradise By the Dashboard Light is so audacious. Great fun time song, the call and receive technique is executed to perfection on this one. Loads of piano, big guitars and hefty vocals. It’s lavish, heartfelt, theatrical and forged in the pits of hell, like the Phantom Of The Opera slow dancing with a hooker at a biker bar.

Super corny. Super grandiose. I love it. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) would be a perfect song if it didn't have that intro. My other favorite tracks were Heaven Can Wait and Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad

It's over the top and cheesy in the best way. Like Jack Black's fictional rock persona is somehow less cheesy than Meat Loaf in real life. That being said, it's a bit dated and I'm left wanting a little more rock and a little less opera, but I still love it for what it is.

the bats are released and it did hurt. come on, there are one hundred of them fluttering in my brain at the same time when i'm listening to the album. what a great rock opera. but come on, you are telling me that the songwriter who works on this album also wrote "total eclipse of the heart"? that's some wild news. 4/5

So campy. But exquisitely composed and produced.

I've listened to this before so I enjoy it. 4.

1001 Album of the Day (03Feb2025): Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell [1977] I am an utter fanboy of Jim Steinman, and this was my introduction into his wild theatrical world. Though he'd use many other artist display his psychotic genius, none ever did it quite the way of the madcap duo of Steinman and Meat Loaf. Rest in peace the both of you 9.35 ★★★★½

Remember this album. Yes, it’s a great one.

Already heard it, banger

For my moneys worth, Hall of Fame rock opera!

Extremely fun album

Always fun, what a classic

HIS NAME WAS ROBERT PAULSON. And holy shit could he rock. Shout out to Jim Steinman though for the writing.

So very fun to sing along to while making French onion soup, also the first time I heard all of this in the album context which was also fun

My enjoyment pales in comparison to Carly's, as this seems to be her most anticipated album of the list. Still, a fun, cheesy, bombastic rock opera. We had just listened to this in the past month when we were doing "DIY Album Generator" on the weekends using the "Best Selling Albums" book. A good rundown of the entire Jim Steinman sound on the Hit Parade podcast: https://slate.com/podcasts/hit-parade/2020/10/jim-steinman-made-plethora-of-pompous-pop

It’s funny and catchy and had some good moments

Cinematic. Operatic. Captures America’s late 70s middle class youth. Ambitious.

I sent the first track of this album to my friends who told me it's actually a musical! After finishing the album that makes so much sense.

Clasdi

Super over the top 70s glam rock is a guilty pleasure, what can I say.

I feel like I’m listening to a rock opera while listening to this album. 😄 This album is a journey!

I've heard this album numerous times over the years, but it has been a while. It was nostalgic, but it has not aged particularly well. That being said, it's a good album.

To many great memories of singing along with a few of the songs on this album to give it anything less than a 4. But a few weak songs keep it from getting a 5.

An opera about teenage hormones.

Begrudgingly giving this a 4 even though I originally thought I would despise it. The kitschy vibe is irritating, and the ballads are melodramatic af, but these songs are also catchy as hell and there are a few moments where it really rocks.

A bit of Elton John meets Queen. There's something about Meat Loaf that keeps me hooked on his albums and this one was no different. "Bat Out Of Hell" is theatrical, campy but not over the top. All the songs here sound happy, despite being a rock album. It's well composed and well produced and the experience of listening to it is well worth it.

fuuu am full tetszett, korabban meg sose hallgattam, kellemes meglepetes

Kedvenc/Favourite: All Revved Up with No Place to Go Izgalmas volt, jó változatos és komplex. Tetszett, ahogy összeálltak a dallamok, a szöveg is nagyon ki volt találva. Egy-egy kép felvillant egy nagy történetből és szépen össze is álltak, de önmagában szerintem annyira azért egyik dal sem kiemelkedő. It was exciting, with good variety and complexity. I liked the way the melodies came together, the lyrics were very well thought out. Pictures from a big story flashed up and they came together nicely, but in themselves I don't think any of the songs are that outstanding.

My first taste of Meat Loaf (musically or culinarily) was from my dad's 'Heaven and Hell' compilation of Loaf and Bonnie Tyler songs. It was a great album and featured a 5-minute edit of Bat out of Hell, which I have to say is still my preferred version. Because while I'm all for epic, overblown tracks, I'm less bothered about epic, overblown track lengths. The exhilarating moments of gloriously silly, yell-along-with-clenched-fists melodrama definitely outweigh the more long-winded passages though.

A classic full of classic ballads that take you on journey after journey. I LOVE that it starts with the title track, perfect way to launch into this album experience. Meat Loaf, man, listening to this whole thing in one sitting just reminds me of how incredible he really is and was. What a man. Loved this album… but I want to give it three stars and I don’t know why… so I will. Rip meat loaf

Reminds me of Elton John so far, a bit like a celebration

Enjoyed this, it was a fun time.

I think I quite enjoyed

Har den på vinyl.

Bat Out of Hell is a very fun song. Love the spoken word part. I can see where Creeper gets their influence…. Same tone of voice and everything. Heaven Can Wait is not that strong. Paradise is awesome. Overall, a fun listening experience and a cool rock opera.

Never intentionally listened to Meat Loaf before this. Base on the name I always assumed they were like insane clown posse. Wasn’t expecting a sort of Freddie Mercury meets Elton John meets Ozzy Osbourne meets Scott Stapp meets Jesse James Dupree. I admit, I really enjoyed this. Bat out of Hell was my favorite but everything was solid.

This album takes me back to Q104 in New York riding in the backseat of my dad's car. This album sold 43 million copies. America didn't legalize gay marriage until 2015 but in 1977 everyone happily bought an album that was essentially a musical...without an actual musical. Including an extended baseball analogy about sex that I definitely didn't understand as a kid. I also remember VH1 Behind The Music about how much Meat Loaf was abused. Basically I'm working through a lot of 10 year old memories about Meat Loaf. I'm proud of this delightful weirdo.

Since seeing Wicked with my 4 year old daughter my musical theater horizons have unexpectedly expanded. How would my life had been different if I’d been a ‘Broadway’ kind of guy? This album is like a musical theater rendition of Born to Run, both thematically and tonally, but more baroque and way less serious. I enjoy whenever something is so over the top it cant help but become tongue in cheek (I guess that’s usually called ‘camp’) - and I think that’s why I kind of love this album.

probably the most well composed block of cheese of all time

Really liked this album

Five of the seven songs on this album were popular radio hits when it was released, although I never heard the album iin its entirety. Overall very good in my opinion, but not quite five stars.

You took the words right out of my mouth, so geil. Find die Stimme vom Sänger super! Er ist berühmt für seine Rock-Balladen, aber ich kann mir nur n paar anhören, bis ich wieder was anderes haben will - 4 Sterne

No one meats it better than the loaf.

Bangers

uhhh so this album is pretty dope. Consistent grand themes throughout and presented as such. It really is a presentation and a performance, I feel like you can visualize Meat Loaf singing this on a stage. Makes sense since it is derived from a rock opera. Really pleased that I got to listen to this full album and I am happy that my mom has this record.

Another classic.

Very theatrical, a cool soundtrack for a musical, and a great, very dynamic voice. I am pretty sure this record was a big inspiration for Tenacious D, because it reminded me somehow of them. Amazing performance!

There's a lot going on but he just somehow makes it work.

So maximalist and so fun. Very theatrical. As a musical theatre fan it’s right up my alley. 4.5/5

Hot patootie, bless my soul! I get to listen to Meat Loaf fuck yeah :)

doesn't get any more classic than this

Have on vinyl. This is just good fun, could be a soundtrack for a film. Big and operatic, cheesy but no need to take it too seriously

Pretty enjoyable. Very big.

好欢乐,好喜欢

Not bad over the top theatrical rock n roll

Not what I was expecting from the cover. Pretty fun and high energy, felt like a musical or something like that.

I liked some parts more than others but the stuff I liked was super fun and the stuff I didn’t like wasn’t even bad just felt a bit bland. Overall v fun

8/10 - Very theatrical which was fun to listen to. I thought the music as a whole was very good.

Love this album. Favourites- bat out of hell, took the words right out of my mouth, two out of three ain’t bad, paradise by the dashboard light

Wow, I can see why this album was such a big deal when it came out. I’m not usually into theatrical or opera-style music, but they did a great job blending rock opera with hard rock and prog rock. The production is top-notch, with sophisticated arrangements that make it feel grand and dramatic. This is definitely the perfect album if you’re in the mood for something big and over the top.

Honestly this was really good. Don’t know how often I’ll go back to it but I loved the arrangements and Meat Loaf has a really good voice.

esse álbum me deu vontade de ser boomer e de ter uma harley 🤟🤟🤟 hell yeah 🤟🤟🤟 eu sinto que se conhecesse mais rock dos anos 70 talvez eu tivesse gostado menos desse álbum

I think I groaned when I opened to see this album this day but I give everything a shot. I really only knew Meatloaf's hit I'd Do Anything for Love but I knew his general sound. Very piano based. Strangely semi-romantic but weird lyrics. And this album didn't disappoint there. But I have to say I enjoyed this album overall and some of the songs got stuck in my head. Pleasantly surprised by this one! I'm sure the other album with the hit is also on this list right?!

questi so bravi bravi!

So good. Teenage angst!

#395. This shits silly as hell, but I suppose that's the point, so you can't really fault it for that. 4/5: I don't know why, that just feels right.

I always hear about this being highly rated but never fully listened to it, This is a great album can’t complain. All revved up and no place to go is relatable

You can rate this album, assuming you can get your fat, swollen, sweaty stumps of imbred fingers onto the vote button.

The Aussie pissed dad special. Gotta love it.

Really enjoyed this one

This was a great album! Could very much tell it was based on a musical, but Meat Loaf's clean vocal stylings are perfect for it. I can definitely feel the influence of Elton John, and other Glam musicians of the time all over this album. I'd 100% listen to it again (I think this was actually the first time I've listened to it as a whole)

Love it

An absolutely bonkers and iconic late 70s rock opera. This album is sweet but is absolutely insane. It's too much, but it's a good time.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. To be honest the name "Meatloaf" makes me picture an unhygenic obese guy with a breathy screamo voice, which I realize is not *at ALL* accurate.

It's meatloaf. Kinda like when mom said we were having meatloaf for dinner. I would groan, but then when I started to eat it, I realized it's not that bad.

Theatrical and over the top in the best way.

3.7 - I hate to say I actually enjoyed this quite a lot

Pathos, instrumentation, vocal delivery... Everything is turned up to 11 on this album. Which sometimes makes it seem a bit pretentious, but even that was obviously part of the equation when it was conceived. This is obviously too much of everything, but it's great this stuff exists precisely because of it - even though I definitely won't start listening to this album on a more frequent basis now.

Big music that I can really enjoy listening to.

paradise by the dashboard light is great

I've never really listened to Meat Loaf before and had no idea he was so huge (6th best selling [physical] album of all time?!). Anyway, enjoyed this one waaaay more than I thought I would. Would be happy to listen to this one again - many times.

A rock opera/concept album about getting laid on prom night that clearly influenced Jack Black, “Superbad,” and countless others. Cheesy, over the top, and inexplicably likable.

I think there are a couple key things, above and beyond the musicianship, singing and songwriting that make this work so well. Meat's just so damn sincere and committed to the material. He's giving it his all, passionately. To that I say, well done, Meat Loaf.

Great album!

I forgot how funny, and varied, and memory inducing album this was.

love some rock opera

Like a crazy rock opera

My mom used to play this album, but it has dawned on me that she only played side 2 as I had never heard the other 4 songs. The album has a Springsteen feel to the songwriting on that side that explodes into theatricality on side 2. Steinman is truly unique and, I guess, so is Meat Loaf. This album is a WILD swing and I kind of like the story of making the album and the attempt more than the songs (which kind of surprised me). It's a 3.5 for me, but going up to 4 for theater kids bringing it to Rock and Roll.

There was always a little snobbishness towards this album when I was growing up. Soft rock, overblown nonsense. But I’ve come to admire Meatloaf and the universe he creates. Fair play. Yes it’s not my cup of tea but I admire it and enjoyed its overblown soft rock universe on this listen.

Favorite Track: Bat Out of Hell You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) Paradise by the Dashboard Light

Bizarre but beautiful album

It’s ok

I can't remember why I fell in love with Meat Loaf. I must have been about 16 or 17. It was a superb transition from heavy rock (AC/DC, metallica, black sabbath) to a gentler, more lyrics-based world. The songs have humour embedded deep inside them, they are flamoyant, unapologetic and extremely carefully written and produced. This is still up there, though some of the shine has gone in the last 20 years or so; some of the plastic arrangement makes them fall a little flat, e.g. on For Crying out Loud. Highlights: Paradise by the dashboard light (a song with a punchline; surprisingly has double the plays of Bat out of Hell on Spotify. I don't think the UK plays this song a lot at all) Two Out of Three Ain't Bad ... (Hot Summer Night)

Whoa And here I assumed a guy named Meat Loaf would be an absolute joke. I mean I knew his appearance in Rocky Horror was great, but I had no idea just how talented he was. This album felt grand, big, sprawling and exciting. It did what I love when albums do - started off hot and told us what he’s about, changed gears throughout, and finished strong. This was almost theatrical. Very cool stuff and hard to dislike much. He’s a joke no longer. He’s a legit and talented musician in my book. This checked every box for me and I’m absolutely here for it. Four stars. Standout Tracks: Bat Out of Hell, You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth, All Revved Up with No Place to Go, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, For Crying Out Loud

my inner musical theatre kid loves this so much

Very well written album with instantly recognizable tracks! I hesitate to give 5 stars simply because there are 3 eight minute+ songs on this album. It's a killer album, with one of the most iconic covers, but in general I feel like songs over 6 minutes tend to drag on toward the end.

there is no reason for an album with this cover to have piano.

i've never really listened to meat loaf outside of random exposures on classic rock radio. i had always automatically put it into the bucket of 'classic rock that i don't like' despite not ever really having listened to his music or being exposed to it much beyond whenever a DJ would play him on the radio. i have to say, i was actually surprised that i enjoyed this album. even though it makes a lot of sense based on the songs that i know from meat loaf, the album is really springsteen adjacent. i wouldn't say it is directly inspired by springsteen, but it definitely sounds like it is cut from the same cloth. it doesn't help that two members of the e street band play on this record, which helps give it that springsteen-esque feel. i also really like todd rundgren's production on this one (shocker, i am a fan of todd rundgren's production in general). the songs here are fun and corny, but it kind of leans into it, something that always irked me, but i didn't mind once i listened to this with an open mind.

Nice classic album. Paradise By The Dashboard Light remains a classic forever.

Wijs album. Een beetje 'foute' dadrock, maar dat is niet per se slecht. Paradise By the Dashboard Light wordt nu wel belachelijk veel gedraaid in cafés en op trouwfeesten, maar 't blijft wel een banger. Bat Out Of Hell, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad etc... zijn ook allemaal geen slechte nummers. 3.7

Cheesy and over the top but undoubtedly fun. He can really belt out a tune

Amazing opening track. I love the piano on it. I also love that the opening song is the title track and 10 minutes long. I respect the hell out of that. It goes hard.

This record is incredible. I was not expecting it to be as rad as it was. It is completely over the top. It's kind of outrageous how over the top this record is, but its also so perfectly executed that its hard to not like it. It really does feel like the inspiration of the Dracula Puppet Musical in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Every song is a journey and every song is perfectly thought out and placed correctly in this album. The title track is a 10 minute epic with different waves and motions. Heaven Can Wait is somber and building. All Revved Up is so great with the saxaphone. Two out of Three is pretty cheesy, but again, its kind of perfect. I just love the thoughtfulness in making this ridiculous campy album. I'm stoked I listened to it today.

87% Fav: Bat Out of Hell, Heaven Can Wait, For Crying Out Loud Least: N/A Must-Hear? Yes

Reject insincerity. Embrace cornball.

Too much, done too ridiculously. But yeah of course I had a fucking blast listening to it.

Bombastic in all the best ways. Meat Loaf's voice sells the cheese of the opera perfectly. Composition wise, it could've done a little more at times but that doesn't stop this from being one helluva ride 9/10

Classic album that deserves the accolades it’s received over its lifetime.

So tempted to give this a 5 as Bat Out Of Hell is one of my favourite songs of all time, but the rest of the album just doesn’t quite live up to it. I liked parts of some of the other songs, but none came together as perfectly as the title track does. Also, the bells in You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth make it sound like a Christmas song.

Haven't listened to a lot of Meat Loaf before. Bat Out of He'll is a great song. Also really like You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth. Rest of the album didn't stand out as much, but still enjoyed it. A generous 4.

Bat Out of hell is a brilliant tune, especially when driving. The rest of the album is good but not quite at the same level, but overall, I still very much enjoyed it.

This is always fun to listen to. The last song is too long but the rest is very cool.

Jim Steinman is a hell of a composer, and Meat Loaf is a hell of a vocalist. I liked every song here, but I loved the hits. it was nice to experience the album in its entirety, I know next to nothing in this genre (rock opera? ballads?) but it was pretty enjoyable, true to form, however, some of the song lengths are too much, but your mileage may vary.

I don’t much care for the socio-political human he became, but I don’t know how you don’t love Meat Loaf.

Incredible rock opera. Forgot how much I liked this album on my first listen

I enjoyed listening to this album, especially when it comes to the slower songs, Heaven Can Wait and For Crying Out Loud. But also the titletrack is fantastic!!

I have a distinct memory riding in the truck with my dad, going thru cassettes to play while driving out to go hunting, and seeing this. Don’t remember the music though, just the title and album art.. Anyway, this is dripping with excess but is pretty decent if you don’t take it too seriously. 3.5/5 not exactly my cup of tea but it was a good listen, some nice funny moments throughout helped too

I burned out on this album early on, I used to have to play Two Out Of Three and Paradise in the clubs when I was a young lad. I don't know, the album was certainly huge, but to me it seemed like pretty much the same stuff repackaged into 7 songs. I was all set to give it 3 stars and the wife came into my office and adamantly said "Give Meatloaf 5 stars!" She's been singing and dancing around the house to it all morning. I'll compromise. :-D

I've never been all that big on Meat Loaf (the dish or the musician), but there are some stone-cold classics on here. These rock ballads with a great vocalist are the sort of music that just never gets made anymore, and I think that's too bad.

Grandiose in the best possible way, crescendo after crescendo of wonderfully hammy, fully committed rock and roll. Great arrangements and performances throughout, with over-the-top singing on top of a Wall Of Sound, nodding to Phil Spector and Bruce Springsteen. It reminds me of a friend who played in a Scottish Meat Loaf tribute act, whose singer was Pete, hence - "Pete Loaf". They went down a storm in Miners' Welfare Clubs and the like, with Pete stamping across the tiny stage, emoting like hell.

Okay, this is so fun. Recognized the E Street Band playing immediately. As a former theater kid who loves camp, I'm into this. RIP dude.

Definitely not what I was expecting to get out of a Meatloaf album. It was a really over the top and fun album, and it really does feel grand when you are listening to it. I especially loved the title track of the album, and it really sort of prepares you for the theatrics of the rest of the album.

I love how dramatic and soap opera feeling this is. I had only listened to Paradise by the Dashboard Light before so I was pleasantly surprised to hear how good the rest of the other songs were.

Bat Out Of Hell was nothing like what i was expecting. From the album art, i just assumed it was likely gonna be a heavy or power metal album and while this album does have some metal elements, it isn't a metal album by nature. It was really good though. It switched between many different styles like the (kinda) power metal sounding songs like bat Out Of Hell to Tearjerker ballads like Heaven Can Wait and even a more rock and roll style with Paradise By The Dashboard Light. All of these styles were great, as were the vocals and lyrics. This one is definitely a really good one. Best Song: Heaven Can Wait Worst Song: All Revved Up with No Place to Go

The most gloriously campy, deliciously melodramatic album. Give me all the piano glisses!!! These hearty ballads are just so much fun

Go big or go home. Everything is a huge ballad. I prefer the songs on their own rather than all in a row.

actually banging

This album is bumpy. Its' highs are 10/10 knocked out the park home runs. 'BOOH' and 'Paradise...' are the clear examples of that. There is a fair share of filler, some of which feels a little cringe, but mostly makes sense in the context of the rest of the album. This is my mums favourite album ever, and she generally has disastrous taste, but this is one that I'm happy to say she has got right!

I was today years old when I discovered that Bat Out of Hell is based on a sci-fi rock opera version of Peter Pan, albeit with more songs about sex and motorbikes, and not so many about one handed pirates and crocodiles with alarm clocks. This album is a blast though, with Meat Loafs reliably humongous operatic vocals and Jim Steinman’s over the top score. Highlight is surprisingly filthy song using baseball as a metaphor for risky teenage sex in a car.

This is great, very theatrical and solid, rock record. High quality compositions and a great voice. I was not so familiar with Meat Loaf before listening to this, and that was a pleasant listen.

4 out of 5 ain't bad

Good rock album that’s very upbeat and energetic. Wasn’t crazy for it, but I do think it was a good listen. Thought the songs were a bit longer than I would have liked. All of this I wrote before hearing the final song of the album, and holy shit what a bombastic and moving ending. Really one of the greatest last songs of an album I’ve heard in quite a while. Standouts: Bat Out of Hell, You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth, Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad, and For Crying Out Loud.

The highs of this album are as high as any, however some of the slower, quieter moments stop it from being perfect for me. Maybe the greatest opener of any album ever.

Crazy piano riffs, all the melodrama but in a fun, musical-theater way.

Always enjoyed this album. I'm an odd one and like the sequel better, but I grew up during that time lol

Ojämnt album. Tre låtar var känslomässiga bergochdalbanor som överraskade: Bat out of hell, Paradiset by the dashboard light och For crying out loud. Sjukt rolig lyssning, typ musikal. Resten var tråkiga, smäktande låtar som var som alla 80-talsballader nånsin. Får en fyra för att vissa var så bra!!

Daamn fett bra album asså Bästa låtar: Bat out of hell, Paradise by the dashboard light

So glad we got this, I hadn’t heard it before but maybe once. I liked Bat Out of Hell quite a bit and many of the others had moments of excitement too. Mixed with moments of sad boy rock with the pianos and wailing. I’ve never been a huge meatloaf fan but it was a good time.

If you ask me, Meatloaf is best served lightly spiced with some aromats let nutmeg, clove, fennel seeds. Served with caramelised fennel and a blackberry sauce. It’s really quite marvellous! Theres no 2 ways about it! 4.3

The man who created and defined his own genre, the rock opera. I don’t think I would listen to this regularly but the impact he had on music was great.

His name is Robert Paulson But really why am I enjoying the shit out of this? When I was growing up, i had BooH II on CD, and wasn’t expecting much from its predecessor but this is a pleasant surprise. It’s the perfect intersection of Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Alice Cooper, and the few redeemable qualities of Billy Joel, with an outsider musical theater kid mixed in. And it’s a toe tapping good time.

Bat out of hell Paradise by the dashboard light Longs morceaux, ça tue !

Rock, Piano, Oper, was will man mehr?

Was i expecting rock opera over the top production and performance? Yes. Did i expect to enjoy it as much as I did? No Fun, ridiculous album

I already knew I loved this album honestly. So glad it is on the list. It's very fun. He was a great vocalist, and this album shows off his singing skills for sure. Very nostalgic album for me. Enjoyed it!

A master of the art of rock/metal as you'd expect. Ended as a terrible person but still.would.be remembered for his music mainly. This album was the first one I saw of his as a kid in my step dad's CDs. I mean there is a reason Jack black had him in the Kickapoo song amount with Dio for tenacious d movie/band.

Theatrically Pop/Rock

Teen opera! Over the top just as it was meant to be. Over the top just like its subject matter: teen hormones. Several very good songs crowned by one of the biggest hits of all time. And casting Meatloaf in the part was perfect to give it the required excessive gravitas.

Outrageous album. The cover by the great Richard Corben promises insane heavy metal. The album delivers showtunes. It’s still amazing, and it’s the (even hornier) cousin of Springsteen’s Born To Run.

Favourite tracks: bat out of hell; you took the words right out of my mouth; all revved up with no place to go; two out of three ain't bad

Amazing!! Rock opera at its finest!

I thought it was good! Didn't love the length of a few of the songs, but I was overall impressed!

not sure what exactly i was expecting from Meat Loaf, but man, can that dude compose a song. its loud, its bombastic, but every single instrument and decision he makes has it all coming together. its a super gorgeous album, from front to back. not every song can be an incredible epic... but Meat Loaf really puts that assumption to the test.

This album never goes below a 4, and spends some time at 5, but I think it all comes out to a very solid four stars. There’s not much to say about this that hasn’t been said so many times already. It’s great, and I’ve always loved Paradise By The Dashboard Light (I remember the first time I heard it.) I passed on buying this vinyl recently, and listening now, I kind of regret it.

1977 feels way too early for this. This is 80's arena/prog/concept definitely. It's A Night At The Opera turned up a notch. I can understand how influential this was on the sound of rock, or at the very least portentous. It's also interesting that it was so popular in the era of rock stars as songwriters when the entire album is written by a single person, who is credited on the album cover. I wish it was more acceptable to just have a writer.

Okay so this album leans into the kitsch and cheese and it just works. It's over-the-top in a very musical theatre way (unsurprising it came from a musical) that I normally don't like but again... it just works. It's stupid and Meat Loaf was the punchline for a lot of jokes but god damn is this fun.

Paradise by the Dashboard Light, All revved up with no place to go, for crying out loud

Classic album. Paradise by the dashboard light is an all time song. Ty meat

Was borderline 5 here but ultimately went with the 4. I think i just have rose tinted glasses due to my dad always blasting these songs in the jukebox while we would play pool in my basement. But honestly there’s a lot of hits on this album, they just don’t really work together as an album IMO. They all work better on their own but don’t really flow into each other. Like i literally saved every song on the album, but i don’t think it’s worthy of a 5 as an album. Idk why Meat Loaf gets meme’d to death bc they got some pretty good songs. ez 4

surprised at how much i enjoyed this. over the top/operatic at times, but i can see why this made the list

I like bombast-rock and he is the one

fun but I won't listen to it often

Bat out of Hell I’ve never listened to this, I’ve not even heard the full 9 minute version of the title track, but I find Jim Steinman really interesting and have a real soft spot for his songs, so I was really keen to give this a listen. Bat out of Hell, I’ve never really noticed the Springsteen-ness of this song before, both musically and thematically - teenage boredom and excitement and urge to go somewhere more exciting and bigger. Great track no matter how many times you hear it. You Took the Words Right out of My Mouth - have always loved this song. Corker, even with the saliva-ry spoken word intro. Heaven Can Wait is a bit of a lull, probably the weakest track. All Revved Up is great, love the steady beat all the way through, and the musical sense of pent up frustration. Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad ain’t bad at all, it threatens to turn into Bat out of Hell in parts but has a satisfying melody and a good lyric. Paradise by the Dashboard Light is a belter, over the top of course, but a great story song, banging in the car listening to the baseball, tell me you love me, erm maybe tomorrow? Great title too. For Crying Out Loud is a suitably cinematic ending, plaintive and melancholy, erupting into a histrionic middle section before, falling back down. It is very theatrical but it manages keep the right side of the line, it could easily descend into anodyne Rock Musical territory, or end up like Queen, but there’s a charm to it that that pulls it through and separates it from all that. It’s also thematically really good, it’s very evocative of teenage romantic ideas and fantasy, love, lust, boredom, escape etc. I can’t work out whether there’s a knowingness to all the bombast and over the topness, or a genuine earnest innocence to it, or maybe it’s the combination of the earnestness and tenderness of the words with the bombast of the music that makes it a winner. Either way I don’t think it actually matters, it’s such a fun and entertaining listen. Easy 4 stars, even toying with 5. Will definitely listen again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've rarely listened to Meat Loaf, but I usually like it when I do. There are great songs on the album. I also like to think of Meat Loaf's appearances in various films. He was great in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" as Eddie and really great in "Fight Club" as Bob Paulson and as The Lizard in "51st State". 4/5

This album has always felt like an American Opera to me. Classic. Meatloaf died too young!

It's time for another one of the best-selling albums of all time! Here we have Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf. Given the name of the album (and maybe the artist) and the album cover, you'd think this was something super heavy and dark. While this album does have rock elements to it, it's fairly soulful as well. Like, most of these songs could be classified as ballads. Anyways, despite being misled by that, the album's pretty good. I like Mr. Loaf's vocals. They're very good. The writing is mostly solid. The instrumentals are great. I like the disparity between the hard rock and piano ballad parts of songs. Is this album pretty cheesy? Yeah. Do I care? No. While this isn't my favorite album, not by a long shot, it's still a great album that absolutely deserves to be on this list. High 4/5.

Nota:7/10 25/05/2024

Birth of ballad rock. This was wild stuff for it’s time.

Freak Out Of Hell by Freak Loaf

I loved this album throughout the whole thing. The theatrics are incredibly fun and it was definitely a joy to listen to. "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is an all-timer.

This is such a fun and theatrical album! I loved it!!

rock opera album sung by great vocallist

Hell yeah dude!

It was okay. The cover looked way more hardcore than it actually was tho. It was cool how the lyrics actually told stories

Say what you will, but cocaine made some very entertaining music 'back in the day'

Was Meatloaf flawed? Yes. Is this album flawed, yes? Is it a hell of a ride, absolutely. 4.5

Cool album art. I like that it opens with the crazy piano. I thought the song writing was really inspired.

Perfect for what it is. Where would Glee be without it?

Outstanding album

Truely one of a kind. An epic triumphant rock opera the likes of which are unmatched. Werewolves, endless sexual induendo. Guitar solos and timeless vocals. Also, his name was Robert paulson

Gotta love grandiose 70s rock operas with loads of piano.

Epic album with a hell of a crooner.

Very cheesy. I like it. Very much.

Love a bit of meatloaf!

This album kind of reminded me of a Queen-esque formula that combines a Broadway feel with some great hard rock. Meat Loaf ain't no Freddie Mercury, but he does have some pipes. As I said for the Queen albums, this isn't necessarily music I would keep in my personal rotation, but I can absolutely appreciate it for what it is.

It's like listening to a rock musical. But a good one.

Incredible sound for the time in which the album was made

Surprisingly good album with three solid hits and a good supporting cast of songs.

A wild ride of an album. This is exactly the kind of music that I hoped for in this list: something that I haven't paid attention to before, catches me off guard, is wonderfully unique, and technically well-made.

So cool. Don’t know if I would have ever thought to listen to an album over singles but I’m glad I did. It’s just so strange. Loved it.

I don't know how to feel about this. How can you not be into a rock opera. The second half of Paradise by the Dashboard Light is hilarious - the idea of agreeing to love someone to the end of time (after sleeping on the question and answering in the morning) then promptly praying for the end of time to hurry up and arrive is comedic gold.

Holy hell, if the rest of the album can match "Bat Out of Hell" then this has all the makings of a 5 star album. I was expecting some garbage punk with a name like Meat Loaf. Loving the keys, the sax, and the vocals; both lead singer and chorus. All Revved Up with No Place to Go scratched that same itch from the intro song. I have definitely heard Paradise before. Settled into a 4 by the end of this one.

Meat Loaf hatte ich früher gar nicht auf dem Schirm. Sehr bombastisch.

I was not expecting this album to be this good.

Didn't go into this expecting to enjoy it but I really got into the theatricality of it all. Good fun.

Heard it a million times

This is an album I've been aware of for several decades, and I've heard most of the songs on this album, but I've never actually listened to it until now. I can understand why this album was so big in its heyday. It's a bunch of songs about young love, but written from the perspective of someone looking back on those days. The music is big and features a lot of instruments, which matches Meat Loaf's powerful voice well. The album really comes together as more than the sum of its parts. It's reputation is well deserved 4/5

Ridiculous, incredible, ludicrous, amazing, insane, brilliant.

Iconic

Kult der Ende 70er... lang lang ist es her, die Stimme erkennt man sofort, hymnenartikes Stakkato und gute Rockmusik, einfach gut

Meat Loaf - turning it all the way up to 11, 7 years before Spinal Tap

Guilty pleasure rock opera. Campy but fun. I have vivid memories of throwing bullpen sessions in college with this playing over the loudspeakers of our gym. Weird. But a fun time.

Meat Loaf may be singing here, but rest assured this is all Jim Steinman, Meat Loaf is merely the conduit these song chose to make their way into our world.

I enjoy Meat Loaf for the OTT camp nature of the whole thing but can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea. It's rock n roll for musical theatre goers which is a niche that's pretty much all his own. Most of the tracks go on a bit long for me but I enjoyed it

Yeah go on then....

Gaudy and over the top in a fun way

Always a great album to go back to

How was this so good? I’ve never once (knowingly) heard a Meat Loaf song, so I had certain expectations of what he’d sound like. But this is not what I was expecting at all. It’s so much better! In many of the top reviews, people seem to be saying that this album is overproduced. But that doesn’t bother me. In fact, I tend to enjoy overproduction! I very well may listen to this album again. 8.5/10 Top 5: 1. Bat Out of Hell 2. For Crying Out Loud 3. You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth 4. Heaven Can Wait 5. Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad

A very 70s odyssey, almost insufferably campy and dramatic… emphasis on the almost. A fun and entertaining ride chock full of great vocals. Best song: Paradise by the Dashboard Light
