Way over the top, but an enjoyable listen 3/5

I had a fun time listening to this over-the-top record.

Was ok

Opening two tracks are definite 5's and amongst the greatest/ campest rock songs ever ... but then unfortunately the wheels fall off and it becomes a bit meh. Two out of Three not as good as I remembered it (I loved it when i was 13) and Paradise by Dashboard Light does not really do it for me.

Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.

Not really for me, but a fun listen

Guitar tone is sensational Album cover art is also gorg, absolutely obsessed Meat Loaf always makes me feel so nostalgic, I know he's American but there's something really British about his sound.

Two great songs and a lot of filler but those two songs are super great

Too long songs

Pretty fun, apart from all the sex noises..

This was fine. Rock opera isn't typically my sort of thing, but I'm glad I listened to it once through in its entirety. Highly unlikely I'll ever be compelled to put it on ever again.

I'm sure this was the bee's knees when it came out and it seemingly bridges 60's rock with 70's glam. This is a ridiculous and over the top album with songs that go on way too long for their own good. While Meat Loaf carries the weight of the songs well, I felt like he would collapse at any moment from the sheer energy he's belting out the lyrics with. This wasn't something I grew up on and only heard sparingly on the radio until now. I understand it's draw for people of a certain era, but listening to it fully for the first time has me convinced that it will also be my last.

Good album

I’ve always liked concept albums. Not sure if this one is, but it sure felt like one. At least like a rock opera. I like big dramatic ballads. That album art is amazing haha.

Feels like many contradictions, first and foremost the dude's name is Meat Loaf and makes (silly?) heavy metal or hard rock. The music is okay and jumps around quite a bit but none of it is too exciting in my opinion. 5/10

it was fine

Great album that is both of its time and yet timeless.

Not a Meatloaf lover.

***An ok album. Not a great voice, but fun songs

not necessarily what i expected but pleasantly surprised

I've met Mr Loaf but have never been enamored with his records. I wasn't excited for this one but it wasn't bad. It's music of a time and place that can take you back to that place which is one of the important things I ask music to do. I was going to go 2.5 but I'll give it a three

decente infelizmente não consegui me conectar com nenhuma música por completo

Bat out of Hell é basicamente um "Os do rock eu sei quem são".

-this record was not exactly what I expected it to be. Felt kind of like a weird crossroads between 70s prog stuff and more commercial 80s rock? some of it was corny and blended together but overall it was decent -I enjoyed the longer tracks speeding up and slowing down -Favorites are Bat Out Of Hell and Paradise By The Dashboard Light

I understand why people love Meat Loaf and Bat Out Of Hell, but it's not exactly for me. It feels like an album version of Rocky Horror Picture show. It's not for everyone, but the people who like it REALLY like it. Best Songs: You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth, Paradise By the Dashboard Light Worst Songs: All Revved Up with No Place to Go

Not what I expected!

Fun rock opera

Lame bogan anthems. I cant believe this is the 6th best selling album ever. It’s not bad but it’s not great

Beginning monologue for track 2 had me feelin a little freaky at work, nearly crashed out RIP THE HOMIE MEATOAF!!! 😤😤😤

The best broadway.

I didn't really like it to be honest, but it's alright

Good album if you were a 15 year old boy in 1978

I never listened to Meat Loaf before and I didn't realize how cinematic his music would be. Reminds me a lot of Elton John, however, I didn't like it as much as Elton John. Although cinematic, I think there was too much repetition in terms of his voice and the vibe of the record. I loved the opening track, but was kind of disappointed that the rest of the songs sounded very similar. Regardless, I enjoyed my time with it. 3/5

Lowkey 1 good song

This one sent me back to when my mom made me listen to this album in her car and I was forever changed lol. Favorite track: Paradise By the Dashboard Light

The title track and Paradise by the Dashboard Light are bangers. Some of the lyrics are a bit interesting. Will probably listen again though because it's a fun album.

Didn't hate it, but wouldn't play it again. One or two good songs. Some funny lyrics.

This is quite a funny rock opera. But is it good? I'm not entirely convinced.

The title track is an all time classic. But I don't think the rest of the album is though. "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is also a nice single. There's a good live intro that's not on the album. Shame it didn't make it on there. 3 stars for "Bat Out of Hell".

6/10 Highlights: Title track Paradise by the Dashboard Lights

It was a pretty chill listen, hella diverse. 65/100

This is so over the top - it's quite good fun but I probably wouldn't listen to any of these songs again

Very over the top and cheesy, in a good way. I got a little tired of it by the end, but overall I enjoyed it.

Boomer muziek

yfirkeyrt og dramatískt. hef samt gaman að þessu. 3,5.

Classic Meat Loaf. Some songs sound the same though...

I liked how maximalist and audacious this was. I just don’t want theatre kids getting too big for their britches.

Hard to see the guy with tits in Fight Club 50 years earlier belting this out, but there it is. It’s like Jack Black if he got a record contract before comedy started. I feel like I’m listening to Rocky Horror Picture Show long cut. It’s good and maybe even great, but not for me.

High quality musicianship but a bit too theatrical for my taste.

++: Bat Out of Hell, All Revved Up with No Place to Go +: You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night), Heaven Can Wait, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, For Crying Out Loud 7,7/10

My Dad used to blast this record on weekend mornings. Listening again gives me that wonderful sense of nostalgia. With that said, it's not really my style. 2.57

We used to put Bat Out of Hell on the jukebox to get our money worth. Good times.

Finally listened to one of his albums all the way through; don’t really know many of his songs

Yeah a lot of good fun, maybe not one I would pick to listen too, but happy to

It was ok ngl

I somehow missed hearing this album or any of its songs over the past four decades and I can honestly say I don't think I missed anything. It wasn't really my jam, but I applaud the audacity of Jim and Meatloaf taking the piss all the way to the bank. Not a Todd Rundgren fan either, but I'll give it a 3 for the cheeseball production. No favorites. I'm glad to move on to the next one.

The worst bait and switch album cover ever. The older I get the better this record is though.

Judging by the cover and title, I expected a spectacle along the lines of "Epic Monster Truck Death Wrestling". What I got was "The ballad of 'Epic Monster Truck Death Wrestling' - The musical, on ice".

Surprisingly good. I had heard snippets of songs like bat out of hell before but usually just the chorus I didn't know that many of Meatloaf's songs had an orchestral backing. There were some things that I didn't like though, some of the songs had a quality that bordered on stage musical. And there were one or two that felt a few minutes longer than they could have been. Overall a high 3 I think.

Meat Loaf opted for the maximum length of songs and added flourishes where they were not necessary. It does give it a charm.

My only points of reference for Meat Loaf prior to this were Bat Out Of Hell (the song) and his role in Fight Club. The man’s got range. After to listening to this my only points of reference will still be Bat Out Of Hell (the song) and his performance in Fight Club. The rest of the album doesn’t have much going for it. 2 would be harsh though. Simpsons: Yes

Bat Out of Hell is an incredible opening to an album. The Intro to You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth was cringe as anything but the song itself was alright I didn't mind Heaven Can Wait or All Revved Up with No Place to Go but they didn't grab me. I don't actually think I've ever heard Two Out of Three Ain't Bad before listening to this album which is incredible because I reference it rather a lot. I really liked it, a little cheesy but I'll allow it. Paradise By the Dashboard Lights was mostly great, the woman's lyrics in the Let Me Sleep On It section felt a bit ham-fisted but I guess the juxtaposition and the fact it took me out of it kind of worked maybe? Don't know if that's what they were going for though. Weak ending. When that orchestra kicked in in For Crying Out Loud I digged it a lot. Wagnerian rock is a perfect description of this album, I'll give Steinman that, although I doubt Wagner would have been a fan of Steinman with a surname like that. Its a 3 but a high one

I was expecting something a little more hard core with the album cover and album name, but this shit is Glee version of metal. I think Bruce Springsteen could do a more metal album if he tried. I do appreciate the piano throughout the album. Piano is not very hardcore though.

i started listening to this and it just was not my vibe. but i can appreciate the artistry

The words “rock” and “opera” in the same sentence evoke in me a feeling reminiscent of dread mixed with mild nausea. Drausea? I’m aware this is one of the best-selling albums of all time and thus deserves a place on this list. It’s not something I’ll listen to willingly again, but it was fine and over quickly enough. The vibes were good, I’ll give it that.

Rock opera. I do love paradise by the dashboard light. The album was fun and bombastic. Wouldn’t listen to the whole thing again

This would absolutely kill in the 80s, the mix of soul, metal and gospel(?) makes it very interesting to listen to. Power ballad-y at times. Definitely not my favorite but not bad by any means. Favorite song: All Revved Up with No Place to Go (once it settles in to itself)

Eh. This 90s teenager preferred the second one.

First half is a corny take on of Bruce Springsteen style of songwriting - where most of it is actually ok - but the second half descends into high cheesiness. It’s cute the see the ambition and uniqueness - the level of earnestness is what endears me at least - but Iaps my cringe button a bit too much.

I was first introduced to this record when I was 8 or 9 and my big sister got it for Hanukkah. The cover looked wild and I was shocked, *shocked*, that my parents would condone something with the word "Hell" in the title. Jews don't have hell, but it still seemed wrong, especially for the holiday. A year or two before that I was first introduced to Meat Loaf as a celebrity in a Cracked magazine centerfold he shared with Leif Garret ("Meet Leif! Meat Loaf!"). Then again a few years after that Hanukkah, watching Rocky Horror at the late night picture show. None of any of these encounters prepared me for this record. I don't love piano-driven rock generally (sorry, Little Richard!) and these tunes and arrangements are schlocky but I bet would be great fun to sing along to at a dueling piano bar. I can also imagine this album is a teenage touchstone for many. But what's most interesting to me here is Ellen Foley, making her debut here as Meat's singing partner on Paradise By The Dashboard Light. She did a lot more singing and some acting and eventually went on to have a recurring role on Night Court, but the most improbable but verifiably true bit another is that Mick Jones of the Clash wrote Should I Stay Or Should I Go? about her.

Despite knowing about him for decades (and knowing that he was in the Rocky Horror Picture Show), I don't think I've really listened all that much to Meat Loaf, and certainly not to a full album. It's impressive how few of the songs on this album are radio-friendly (due to length), given how this is clearly his most popular album. I feel like this is what you'd get as a mashup of Jack Black and Billy Joel, and it's fun to listen to (although I also can see the comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, especially since that's a lot more contemporary than Jack Black, and several E-Street Band members played on the album). It's interesting that the Brits, Aussies and Canadians embraced Meat Loaf and this album long before the US did; maybe it was just too puzzlingly campy and unserious for US music executives, I guess? I also really like it that the album was based on some songs from a Peter Pan-inspired musical written by Jim Steinman, and then years later a musical came out of the Bat-from-hell series of records--the circle is complete!

I respect the theater kid kitsch, but I was really disappointed by the songwriting on this album in comparison to Bat Out of Hell II which was my only previous exposure to Meat Loaf.

the debut album from meat loaf with heavy involvement from composer and frequent collaborator jim steinman. as anything steinman was involved with, the songs are grandiose and larger than life. the album is a rock opera of sorts about teenage rebellion and trying to get laid. it’s kind of hokey at times but a fun listen… and it’s one of the top selling albums of all time, so there’s that. highlights: “bat out of hell” “heaven can wait” “two out of three ain’t bad”

It's way OTT and super naff but have to admire it in a way

I'm unsure how to feel about piano rock. I thought I liked it, not only because Elton John's hits are very deceiving for the rest of his studio output, but also because Billy Joel's output is shockingly good, or at least the album The Stranger is. I feel this album only adds to the mystery, as Meatloaf has his share of hits that I quite like, this album containing one of them: Paradise by the Dashboard Light, and I like his additions to Rocky Horror Picture Show well enough. However, I always cringed a bit when encounter the schmaltzier side of piano rock, and this album is full of that. Predictable, self-righteous chord progressions, a booming voice to make everything sound more important than it truly is, and throw in perhaps the most misleading album cover ever for good measure. Yet, I found myself liking the schmaltziest track, For Crying Out Loud, only second to Paradise, and that only adds to the befuddlement. The whole album feels too cheesy for my blood, but when it truly digs into it, with the orchestral sweeps and the climactic finish, it works pretty well, and it allows the ending of this album, all nearly twenty minutes of it, to be oddly pleasurable. Perhaps not totally my thing, but I can appreciate it in the same way I like some blatantly terrible 80s songs. Just, God forbid, do not listen if you can't stand bravado and showmanship in a musical artist. This album is 80% that, 10% music, 10% weird sex stuff.

This is so not the kind of music I like, but it’s so cheesy and Meatloaf was in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Fight Club, so it gets a pass.

Always been taken by the background of this album? Very much has the air of a musical theatre album... written entirely by Steinman and preformed by Mr. Loaf... i think the real benefit that this album has is having Todd Rundgren producing it... it really is a convergence of a number of people at the height of their power which is impressive to me... that being said I have always found the music to be a bit too corny and never quite able to reach the heights it sets out to reach.

did not really link with me tbh very great moments tho but overall didnt cathced me that much 2.5/5.0

"Bat Out of Hell" is the debut album by American rock singer Meat Loaf and composer Jim Steinman. The album was developed from a musical, "Nevermind," a futuristic rock version of Peter Pan. It was recorded in 1975-1976 at various studios. Todd Rungren was the producer and a host of musicians contributed including Rungren, Roy Brittan and Max Weinberg of the E Street Band, members of Rungren's band Utopia and Edgar Winter on the sax. The album became one of the biggest selling albums of all-time and peaked on the US charts at #14 and on the UK charts at #9. A heavy guitar and sprawling piano open the album with the self-titled "Bat Out of Hell." It picks up the pace with the drums and slows down as Meat Loaf's vocals come in. Big production, maybe even over the top. Loaf sings and tells the long-winded story of a motorcycle crash. Organ and horns highlight "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth." The beginning of this song sounds very E Street like and why wouldn't it with Brittan and Weinberg in the band. An interesting start to the song as a guy and girl are talking and she'll offer anything to the guy (wolve). The main character was about to say he loves her but she took the words.....and that she is Ellen Foley. Not the last time we'd hear from her. The first song I remember hearing from this album is "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad." A piano and acoustic ballad. I admit; I kinda liked this song. Some ridiculous but memorable lyrics ("I'm crying icicles instead tears) as he just can't now love the girl that he once did. A nice string ending. Little did they know, karaoke and juke box machines were about to get a work out for the next 40 years after the release of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light." The song has three parts and goes from rock guitar with heavy piano to funk and back again. Ellen Foley is back. Baseball announcer Phil Rizzuto makes an appearance. The boy makes a promise to always love the girl to get "parsdise by the dashboard light." He now regrets it and prays for the end of time. That about sums it up. This is one of the albums where certain songs got played a lot on the radio and in bars for a long period of time, I frankly got sick of the songs (a la classic rock radio). That settled down about twenty years ago and really since then the only time I can remember hearing them was a few years ago when Meat Loaf passed away. I'm not gonna run out and buy this album but it was a fun listen once through. Sure, big production, lots of instruments and dramatic, loud vocals. It is like listening to a musical. I don't know if there is a historical comp for this album. No, I haven't listen to "Bat Out of Hell II" or "III." I'm not going to recommend or not recommend this album. I'd imagined everyone has memories of these songs. So, if you want to relive those, listen to it and you don't, don't.

3 out of 5 ain't bad (nor is it particularly good).

His name was Robert Paulson.

not a fan, but i do appreciate the work. honestly, besides the openers to each side, i did not care much about the rest. rock opera is something that is hard for me to grasp, but its not the fault of the genre; just not my thing. i wouldnt listen to this again, but was good to experience once. 3 personal favs: bat out of hell, paradise by the dashboard light

Good ol' Meatloaf, maybe the worst artist name of all time? Jury's still out. I don't know much Meat Loft music; the one song I knew for sure ("I Would Do Anything For Love"), isn't on here. The title track is great, and I respect that so many of these are long tracks. Sometimes they meander into really melodramatic territory that I'm just not really into, but I respect the unique nature of his music. He seems like an odd guy, nothing wrong with that. Not quite classic rock because he's doing a lot of devastated piano balladry. It's a decent album, though I won't return to much. Favorite tracks: Bat Out of Hell, You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth. Album art: Though I may not know the man's music, I sure as hell know and love his album covers. Look at this motorcycle blasting off from a cemetery in the depths of hell. Incredible imagery, you'd expect the music to sound more like Dio or Iron Maiden or something. 3/5

This album sends me right back to Junior High School dances. I have listened to the whole album only a couple of times. Only one song matters to me on this album.

This album is kinda weird , lots of juxtaposition lol.

I've only heard of one of the songs from this album, and although the rest weren't too amazing, it was a pretty decent listen. Very nice guitar towards the middle of one of the songs towards the end of the album but I didn't notice which one it was.

Well, it's become a classic, hasn't it?

Did I just listen to rock-piano?

Meistverkauft? Ging an mir vorbei, gefällig.

Gives me Rocky Horror Picture Shows energy. I loved it.

Theatre kid music (mildly complimentary)

It’s just not my favored aesthetic at all. If you’re into maximum unsubtle, good for you.

A very fun rock and roll album with some high theatrics. I will say that i wish the whole concept was more fleshed out, as the album carries its themes of love and heartbreak and teenage rebellion in a very surface-level manner, and i also don't care much for the whole Springsteen impersonation, i feel like i'd much rather listen to Born to Run if i was looking for these smirky love anthems, but yeah these compositions are pretty good from a musical standpoint and there are a lot of remarkable moments.

Didn’t really care for anything but the major hits. Hard to separate his political views at the end of his life from the art, sadly.

I kept waiting for something. Like for it to get better… for some grunge or some screaming. For a “bat out of hell”, he’s very mild. Maybe because I only know him from Rocky Horror Picture show, but I was underwhelmed. My grandma loves him though.

Fine. Not quite my thing. Big theater kid energy. In high school or college I remember always seeing many copies of this album looking through bins of used LPs & CDs, and for a brief moment I considered making it “my thing” to always purchase every copy of this album I encountered to see how many I would accumulate over a lifetime.

Very enjoyable, very bombastic rock. Maybe not my favorite, and not one I’ve spent a lot of time with, but definitely in the anthemic 70s Springsteen vein. Good times!

It's got some fun moments in it. Good for a listen. I don't know mood I need to be in to go back for this one, but it does exist. Will I listen to again: 10%

Creative, unique, but not as amazingly good as “Bat out of Hell 2”.

I usually just appreciate the art of the album and avoid personal tastes, but this one I just don’t like. Heard lots of the tracks here and there, not big on rock opera, sounds like bootleg Elton.

I thought I would love this album again, and was somehow disappointed. Either I have matured or the album has de-matured. Mildly interested in the album, that's all. 2 stars. (Wait, that's low, surely three? No, not feeling it, not even Paradise by the Dashboard light) Ok. 3 stars, after an argument with myself.

Classic

Strong Intro, thematic swelling big. Probably counted them out due to name. Glam rock? Hair metal? Almost showtune type ballads. Up beat songs, lots of hope? Strange songs, some very oldschool rock elements Very showtuney Not much for me but glad to listen 0:-5/5

i wasn't really paying attention because i was doing school stuff but i had a good time. not my thing i think but it sounded fun. pretty insane vibe comin from this thing. rip the rock opera

Slick, self indulgent, grandiose, epic and super catchy. And that’s just the first song. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn’t quite reach the standard of the title track, but it’s still good fun. Maybe a couple more listens would elevate this to a four, but it’s not quite there

I was hoping to enjoy this at least ironically if nothing else, but other than the couple of songs that are well-known already, it’s pretty garbage. The good songs really lift it up from a bad rating. And you realize the good songs really aren’t as good as you thought when you have to listen to a whole album of this.

3.5 Now I get why he’s in Rocky Horror. Pretty great.

It‘s special and well made music.. But to my ear every song seems to have the same structure :/

Better with ketchup

It’s times like this I wonder what if there was a rapper named Tuna Casserole

Rock Ballad style from the late 70's. I can appreciate Meatloaf more after listening. One of the best selling albums of all time, Nearly a 4 for me

Overblown operatic rock. Haven't heard it in 40 years so an extra point for the nostalgic feels.

Surprisingly really liked this.

My first thought was "Knock off Springsteen musical" and then I read the wikipedia and found out that it was adapted from a musical, produced and performed by several dudes who overlapped with the E Street Band, and was contemporaneously compared to the boss as well. I will never get over the glory of "Meat Loaf" as a stage name.

Yep, that's definitely Meat Loaf

Nostalgia bop, brings me back to driving to school with my mom.

Its Meat Loaf... I like it. Bombastic.

Mmm. I'm still not a Meat Loaf fan. I knew more of these than I expected, and they brought back some funny memories of karaoke, but it's too overdramatic for me.

When I see a cover like this, I expect something hard as fuck. I wanted a sick ass metal album so badly. But folks, looks can be very deceiving. This is very far from what I wanted, and I’m not exactly thrilled. I see this fucking album everywhere. I’ve caught like six dozen copies of this album on CD in the same antique mall. Why do so many people own this? I get it’s sold a ton, but it feels inescapable. And apparently people enjoy this a lot. I’m all for artists expressing themselves in very out there and bombastic ways. I wouldn’t be such a fan of Bowie if that wasn’t the case. But there is a line I draw. And this album lies right on that line. It just goes too far with the theatrics. And attempts to be ten thousand things at once. If Thick as a Brick was made by a bunch of gay theater camp kids, this is what it would sound like. Funnily enough this was adapted from a musical that never got made, and then was subsequently turned back into a musical after the success of the album. And from a production standpoint, I’ll admit that there are some impressive moments of grandiose, where everything actually sort of comes together. But in all other moments, this is a cluttered mess of half-baked concepts that hurt to try and dissect. Basically just a listen in scope, downsizing and not trying to be something more than the sum of your parts. Also the mixing kind of sounds like shit at some parts. When that guitar first comes in on the opening track, I was like “what the hell am I listening to?” This is wildly successful, and to each their own I guess. Because this just wasn’t it for me. Rating: 5/10

In a lot of respects, it's easy to see how this album is one of the top selling albums of all time even to this day. Meat Loaf's vocals set him in the upper echelon of rock singers, and these are on full display with Bat Out Of Hell. While I personally prefer a more traditional song structure as opposed to the longer, storytelling style of the songs in this rock opera, there's still some iconic hooks in some of these songs that make for a good singalong. I also appreciate the campiness and "subtlety" of a brick to the face in the themes that recur throughout. Even if this isn't an album I'm likely to revisit as some of the others I've heard on this project so far, I enjoyed it still and it holds an important place in history. 7/10

Så det är här The Ark snott allt från.

Demasiado largo. Un 3, por pesao. Tiene dos megahits: -I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That): NO me gusta -Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through: SÍ me gusta

My first album suggestion. Right off the bat (haha) I can't think of any Meat Loaf songs other than I'd Do Anything For Love that I know of...and his Rocky Horror Picture Show appearance. I should say the album cover is very quintessential 70's-80's rock, and I love it, but it does evoke more metal than rock-opera vibes. After listening to this all the way through, I can definitely see the musical theatre direction with Steinman. It's always a little weird to hear grown men sing about teenage love, but regardless of lyrical content, the musicality is strong, I love the piano and strong vocals, particularly in the opening and closing tracks, making this a pretty well rounded album. I found myself getting a bit bored and tired with the songs in between, but when the album ended, I did wish there was a bit more. Just that the more had similar vibes to the first and last songs. Being that this is the first album recommended to me on here, I am curious how the rest of this journey will go. I can see this being a favorite of cis white guys from this era or who were raised on it from their parents. Not a knock against anyone, it just definitely has those vibes, haha. Added to playlist: Bat Out of Hell, For Crying Out Loud Thought about adding You Took The Words Right Out of my Mouth, and Paradise by the Dashboard Light, but ultimately decided against it. Rest in peace, MeatLoaf

Amazing album cover! Not a fan of Meat Loaf.

Over the top, campy, musical theatery proggy rock n roll. It’s really well done and I feel like I should like it more but idk.

Really theater-y. Technically a lot better than some stuff on this list but too theater-y for me. It’s like queen but not as good

Dashboard, 2 out of 3 and Words right out of my mouth are all pretty good but Meatloaf’s schtick gets old real fast…to me anyway. Not a bad album by any stretch, but definitely not great.

Don't know if there has ever been an album where the cover art and the music are on completely different ends of the spectrum. If I didn't already know Meatloaf I would fully be expecting a thrash metal album here. Starts off with a bang with the title song which is always fun to listen to in moderation. The piano game is real strong throughout the whole album. It almost feels like things get a bit too over dramatic on this album, not sure if that makes sense in writing but I am not sure how else to describe it. Paradise By the Dashboard Light is another song that is really fun to sing along to, but would never purposely listen to it more than like once or twice a year. Also didn't know it was by Meatloaf. Some parts were really good, but mostly it was an ok album. I'd say mid to high 3

great example of what 1001 albums can provide. Another strong 3

cool musically but not for me, though I do love a good meat loaf

Paradise by the dashboard lights is a gem.

Rock opera!

Honestly not what I expected. I really only knew Meat Loaf from "I'll do anything for love". It was a little circus(y) sounding but honestly not bad. Few songs but only 7 tracks. For some reason I was expecting a 2 hour album. I guess I had Meal Loaf wrong. Not bad. First half of album was more fun. Then it got sad and self loathing and not so good. Then some disco which was nice. Then it got sad again and fizzled out. I'm give the album 1 and a quart thumbs up. Out of 3 thumbs. Spotify kept wanting to switch over to the Rolling Stones. Kind of asking "Hey, isn't this better? What are you doing?". Anyway, pretty decent album. Better than I thought Meat Loaf would be.

This album was inescapable during my senior year of high school, and freshman year of college. Almost every song was on the radio, or being played at campus parties... This album was especially popular with the college ladies, I "inherited" my copy when I got married. This is a very well done album. The songs are solid, Meat sings well. Most of the songs have good hooks. But it really comes off like a soundtrack to a Broadway show. If you read the history, that's by design, but not really a style prefer. Really big sound, over the top stylings, subtle as a brick to the face. And I never quite got the popularity. Not surprised that it was popular, but that it was SO popular. Estimated to have sold 40 million units worldwide. "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" was the huge hit, and is basically an 8 1/2 minute song to set up to dumb joke. Spoiler: the song recounts the "will she or won't she" struggle as a young man tries to "go all the way" with his date. Complete with a drawn out baseball analogy about reaching first base, second base, etc. She finally demands he vow to love her till the end of time, and he eventually agrees in order to succeed at reaching "home". So now he's praying for the end of time. Get it? You know, to end his time with her?? ha-ha-ha. If that's too subtle, there's 2 out of 3, where Meat sings: "I want you, I need you, but there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you. So don't be sad, 'cause 2 out of 3 ain't bad". They's a nice message for the ladies. I don't really mean to gripe, it's a solid album, I own it (via my wife) and listen to it occasionally. I'll give it a 3/5.

Some fun rock, some lame power ballads, and genuinely funny lines. Kind of a mixed bag.

Ridiculous and the songs are too long, but lots of energy and enjoyable.

Was fun, but all over the place.

A fairly good album. Really nothing too stand out or special, but not offensive. 2.5/5 -> 3/5.

So long since I had listened to this band, good music to hear once but not my style anymore

Epic over the top rock…. With some nice ballads…. First time notice Two out of Three ain’t bad…..

Mellancamp, Springsteen. It’s as if a karaoke version of common 80s rock hits existed and a moderately talented singer gave his rendition. Just doesn’t hit me as anything necessary to play again. I respect the ambitious song structure and composition. Just kinda meh.

Can’t say I knew many of the songs. Bat Out of Hell has a long intro before the lyrics come in, but lots of cool piano parts. My two faves from the album are Bat Out of Hell and Paradise By the Dashboard Light. Oh, and are those horns in All Revved Up with No Place to Go??!

Love this album. Sad he’s crazy. “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” and “Bat out of Hell” are my favorites. Definitely more power ballads than I associate with meatloaf!

A product of its time, and has some trite lyrical ideas that seemed like they were very important to the songwriters, but a career and to some extent genre defining record just the same. Paradise by the Dashboard Light is an all time classic and I enjoyed the album cuts more than I expected.

Fun one. I think I like part two better but overall this is a solid album. 3/5

Cute rock ballad, not really my style tho

Campy fun.

I didnt mind it, some fun hits in it. Just not too big into the old rock operas I suppose. I cannot see myself getting into Meatloaf though haha

3/5 Now don’t be sad, ‘cause 3 out of 5 ain’t bad.

Bombastic indeed. A variation on Springsteen-style NJ rock

I didn’t know any of these songs. I kept waiting for “Anything For Love,” but that’s a later album. Also, this guy reminds me so much of Jack Black that I couldn’t take it seriously. Some of his songs are meant to be taken lightly, but not all. Entertaining listen.

This is a great album for a certain kind of person that I'm not. Big, bombastic and heavy on the cheese. For Crying Out Loud is pretty fun ender though.

I liked the piano play with the rock. Songs were okay, not sure I would choose to listen to this full album again though.

I didn’t like the Dashboard by whatever. I see why people dislike and like him. I honestly don’t care. I will sit on top of the fence and not move.

if campy-big, musical theater type sounds are your thing.....here ya go. he's a talented musician, just not my style

5/10 not terrible but not great

It’s definitely a fun album. Hard to have a bad time listening to this one. Don’t think I’m gonna come back to listen to it tho. Rating: 3.0

One of the many instances in which I need to separate the artist from the art. Some of Meat Loaf's opinions and views were pretty awful in the years leading up to his death, but I recognize that can be said of many, many artists, not just in rock music but also in film, television, etc. Anyway, that dilemma is not anything I can solve here or elsewhere, I'm afraid. On we go. Music-wise, this album was so huge in my preteen and early teen years, and I still find it entertaining, fun, and of course, nostalgia-inducing. It's high energy, over-the-top, and so skillfully done.

Theatrical and fun. Because it's the soundtrack of a play it naturally works as an album.

Bit theatrical for my taste, but good fun none-the-less. Favourite tracks: Bat Out of Hell, You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night), Great Boleros of Fire.

Good stuff nut not really a fan.

1st song: Picturing Jason Segal from Forgetting Sarah Marshall as the lead singer. wtf is this wolf shit This is the cheesiest pop rock laser opera ever. It’s terrible but I love it. I don’t know if I can finish this Ooh funkiness in paradise by the dashboard light. Back to cheese. God damn. Cheesier than fondue I did it. I finished the album. That was painful

Felt like a play.

Mildly interesting.

Demasiado largo. Un 3, por pesao. Tiene dos megahits: -I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That): NO me gusta -Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through: SÍ me gusta.

Reminds me of being in the car with my parents in the early 90’s. The album peaks at the title track, then is more of the same ‘rock opera’ format that starts to grate on you after a while. I guess it came out in 1977, so maybe it was groundbreaking then, but really not my kinda thing.

7/10 - 3/5 Title track is awesome, a little too long. The rest of the album is similar to the most mid Billy Joel/Elton John (if he wore a biker jacket) experience imaginable.

Meat Loaf is just as good as its food counter part. I definitely got behind it a lot more on the second listen, still just not my cup of tea. This is probably Tim Allen’s favorite album

Fun enough. It’s got that broadway rock thing where the songcraft is immaculate but its a showtune despite all the rock and roll trappings.

Took me a few sittings to get through this beast. First one was while I was flying back from holiday and was going over Madrid, second one was whilst vacuuming and finally while making breakfast. Quite an overwhelming piece of work. I’m not sure I’ll be revisiting it but can deffo appreciate the work that must have gone into writing this goofy opera. FairPlay meatloaf for those pipes. I liked the 3 out of 4 song and the one where they’re gonna bang but she wants him to tel him he loves him first. Think I saw a video of them playing that on the old grey whistle test and it was fun at

Outrageous

This is some weird combo of Elton John, Queen, Bruce Springsteen and Fleetwood Mac. There were moments of that combo I liked and moments I hated.

Well, that was... a lot. Mr. Loaf seems to be the least shouty thing about this entire production. But I get why it's sold so much.

This is a weird one. There are a lot of positives, but at the same time, I'm like... this is Meatloaf, and I don't particularly want to like meatloaf. Here is the thing, a lot of the stuff i like on this album, sounds like Born to Run, but not as good as Born to Run. So like a worse Born to Run, but its a 5 star album so being similar to that is good. The songs are long, but i don't find that to be a negative at all. There's only 7 songs, but i feel like they've been worked on so long and so hard that they are improved to an extent that they can't be made any better. I think in terms of best song, You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth is the highlight and Paradise By The Dashboard Light is probably the worst song, still decent but just a bit kind of a mash up of loads of different stuff that doesn't really go together, sounds a little like Rocky Horror Show. I think it's probably a mid 3, I dont know that I'd ever listen to it again, but it is good. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on. There have been a lot of albums that have been a lot worse. But after it's third listen today, we'll leave it there

Every new track it sounds more like a musical. The opener is like the overture, with several musical motifs leading into an eight-minute title track. I was surprised to find Jim Steinman didn't also write musicals - you can hear the entire thing taking place on a stage with exposition and characters, etc. I get that it's an important album, but despite growing up listening to Andrew Lloyd Weber and other Broadway hits collections, I wouldn't ever put this on to vibe to.

Das Cover hat irgendwie mehr evilness versprochen. Ja, es ist nicht schlecht, aber ich fands einfach super cheesy. Knapp noch 3 mit 2,6...

Never listened to him before - felt a bit like a novelty record but was ok

Lots of wild things on this one, starting with the biggest one which is that this is apparently like the 6th highest selling album of all time. This is really pretty wild to me, I know my old music knowledge isn't the best (which is why I'm doing this album thing), but this album seems to have basically no staying power compared to the other stuff on the best selling list. I really had no idea what I was getting into here. I'm going to fully admit that my perception of Meatloaf (knowing nothing about his music) was not particularly positive. I remember him from some lame commercials and had read some things about him being a right-wing nut in his old age. Then apparently he said people wearing masks on planes were Nazis or something, and then he (probably) died of Covid in 2022. I kind of assumed this was just going to be some hard metal thing from a bad dude that I would hate, especially given the album art. We try to separate the art from the artist here though, so I tried to keep an open mind. Turns out this is a whole theatrical rock-opera production. Half of this could be a Broadway production, it's totally over-the-top. The lyrics are pretty cheesy (honestly the whole production is pretty cheesy), but it's definitely a dramatic. I generally am into the glam-rock type music, but this one just wasn't generally working for me. It felt like Queen at times, Elton John at times, others at times, and in every case it just seemed like a worse version. It's not bad, and the drama of it makes it a fairly enjoyable listen at least, but I just can't believe this sold as well as it did. "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" is like four different songs smashed together (plus a baseball announcer in the middle) and it's probably the most interesting song on here. Honestly one gripe I have is that all the songs are so long, they just never end (47 minutes for 7 songs). It's fine as a full album together, but I just don't see myself listening to this much on a one-off basis. I will say something nice about Meatloaf, he can definitely sing and keep the energy up. He was probably fun to see live in his prime. I'm probably still over-indexing on my initial perception of him, but my overall take of this is just "fine". I think the popularity of this one might be a bit of a moment in time thing that I can't quite capture today. Maybe I'll come back to this sometime and feel differently though. Favorite song: Paradise By the Dashboard Light Other: Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Bat Out of Hell 2/16/24

It's like Bruce Springsteen playing Queen songs with Elton John. Made well, but not my taste. Favorite song: You took the words right out of my mouth

It was good, didn't really love it. More power of a power ballad for men, not a bad thing just not my thing.

Knew way more songs than I thought. Huge variety of influences on the songs. A solid record, other than for crying out loud (meh, weak song to end on).

Meeeeatloaffffff. That guy can sing, but there's only so much meatloaf I can deal with in one sitting.

His name is Robert Paulson

Shorter than I thought it would be. Solid rock opera.

Naw son. Don’t need this. The best part is the baseball play-by-play.

He’s had some range! Liked it better than I thought I would.

If you’re in the market for a cheesy, over-the-top, yet well-made caricature of Born to Run, look no further.

Bombastic but fun. Brought back memories of my high school days.

The album cover honestly portrays this album well. The most power ballad album to ever power ballad. Its not hard to see why people look back on this album fondly. Basically every song here could be a single, but the titular track, as well as two outta three and paradise by dashboard light all stood out to me. 3.5 if I could. I'm not gonna put this one in my rotation but its never unwelcome.

Me: wow this sounds like a musical *looks up the wiki Oh Anyways Jim Steinman only produces bangers

It’s fun jut a bit too musical theater for me. Amazing vocal performances though.

Decent classic rock album, a little too horny. Bat out of hell was my favorite track

Really enjoyed the theatrical nature of the album.

I feel like I should hate this but I don't.

Good stuff

Fàcil d'escoltar però no m'enganxa

I mean based on the album cover I was expecting some hard rock and what i got was a kind of rock and roll ballad filled record. I enjoyed it by the end more than I thought but its still just fine

Listening to this the first time, I couldn't imagine how the hell this was one of the best selling albums of all time in several major markets. My first impression was that this album was silly and overblown, and that while it has some great arrangements and awesome piano playing, it was just too weird, too meandering, and comprised of too many long songs. But, after reading more user reviews, I decided to give it another listen. Yes, it's still weird, and no, it's still not really my cup of tea, but at least I have more of an understanding of how this album took off like a rocket upon its release and how it's had quite a bit of staying power in rock music. The arrangements are pretty awesome, and the piano playing is absolutely fantastic. The title track is far and away my favorite song on the album. This was one of the few times where the length of the song didn't bother me. The piano playing on this song was great, and the guitar parts later on complimented the established sound really well. I also enjoyed how the tempo fluctuated throughout the song, and while I don't think Meat Loaf is a particularly great singer, he was the singer this song needed, and he brought the perfect energy to those tempo changes. The rest of the album managed to keep the cheesy and glitzy tone, and I can definitely hear the influence of the E. Street Band performers. Additionally, this album had the feel of Rocky Horror's b-movie tributes. While this album wasn't really my speed, I can appreciate its inherent weirdness that I honestly think could only have succeeded in the late seventies.

Shlock

It's like an album full of the second best songs from rock operas. It's fine, I do enjoy a bit of Meatloaf but you know... It's fine.

My very first thought was, “This should have been a rock musical.” Turns out, it is! It premiered in 2017. Haha, not on my radar. It’s not serious music, but it has a driving beat and has some catchy melodies. 3.0

да просто норм треки длинные, но вайб свой есть

Pretty repetitive

Oldie but goldie

I gotta know right now!

Songs are long. so many sounds. Lots happening.

Классик рок, напоминает скорпионс. Лирика, блин. Вообще, послушалось неплохо, но ничего особо. Три, пожалуй

Meatloaf! Love the piano. Give them a big #3

Paradise by the Dashboard light is one of my faves

Another possibly unpopular opinion, I don’t really like Meat Loaf. The songs go on too long, the music doesn’t do it for me, and I don’t really care for the lyrics. Sorry. Listens: 2 Fave Track: I’m not sure I have one Rating: 3 (It doesn’t actively bother me either)

I must rate this a *tortured,* high three stars. I think it's TERRIFIC. I had much more solid time with this album than I had with many others. When I first listened, the musicality and plain dumb fun just blew me away. I don't know what I expected going in (hadn't read that this was shopped as an essentially completed musical score in the 70's before becoming an album), and it's just so campy and silly and FUN teenage angst album! Feels like a parody. Like I'm laughing as much as I'm amazed. Three stars for... it was a great time, but do I really want to come back to this zany zany world all that often? Kind of got fatigued with the intense energy of the record, after a while. There seemed to be no breaks. I applaud its songwriting wizardry, I'm just not sure that I want to come back too often. But as a piece of theater, hell yes, I'd definitely go and see this. A near-4 for an album flawless first few songs. I will stay at my solid "good time was had" 3 stars.

I wanna say a solid 2.5. kinda fun, kinda wild, bonus points for storytelling and a crazy album cover

It was okay.

What a weird album. Operatic, dramatic and remarkably silly. Meat Loaf has some solid vocals here. It's just such a weird album to classify- it's piano driven pop calling itself rock with a heavy metal album cover. I don't know that I would ever want or need to come back to it, but it wasn't bad.

I know of Meat Loaf but have strangely only ever heard "I'd Do Anything For Love" The title song is good, but way too long. Overall the sentiment for like half the songs. This guy loved ballads. I don't. There were portions of each song that were good, but the big picture wasn't doing it for me. Feeling a strong to decent 3/5

Everyone had a copy of this in the 70s

I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but this is a great album. It's a mix of cheap trick and elton john. 3 or 4 stars? probably 3

Vermakelijk, maar beetje teveel musical voor mij

nostalgia.

it's somewhere between a 3 and a 4 just for the drama and paradise by the dashboard light. respect truly. it's not something i'd really choose to listen to though

Absolutely not what I expected! Damn! Musical theater and dramatics and anguish and ecstasy... A lot of fun, but not really for me! Incredibly funny album art choice for an album that draws influence from like. The Ronettes and the Shangri-Las.

Perfectly fine

Self indulgent, over the top... It shouldn't work, but somehow it kind of does. Fair play. Drags on a bit at the end but start was unique.

1. Bat out of hell - 3 2. Took the words - 3 3. Heaven can wait - 3 4. All revved up - 3 5. Two out of three - 3 6. Paradise - 4 7. For crying out loud - 4 3.333 Not something I would go out of my way listen to but if you're going to listen to an epic love ballad can't go wrong with meatloaf

Didn't expect to listen to meat loaf pretend to have sex in a car at the tail

solid album you can return to.

Love the pure and uncut bombast, but every song on this album needs to be cut back by a minute or two.

This is definitely worth a listen, but ultimately not really my type of music. The songs are very well written and Meatloaf's singing is great, but the whole thing is just too theatrical and melodramatic for me.

Okay, couple good songs. Overall, cohesive album, but nothing spectacular.

66/100

I know meat started in theatre, someone really should have talked him out of all this theatrical stuff.

This was fun and catchy back in the day. I don't think it holds up.

Alright rock album nothing too special some really solid songs though

A loud and thrilling ride. I personally enjoyed the quieter sections very much.

First 1001 Albums I recognise

Back to back '70s rock operas. That probably shouldn't have happened because I probably would have enjoyed this more being a bit removed from The Wall.

I liked it, definitely a period piece, but still has some very solid tracks. Closer to 4 than 3.

I wish I could be horny the way these people were

Nicht schlecht (besser als das vom Tag davor) aber nicht so meins.

I love meat loaf. Gotta focus on these lyrics here more though because it’s very much a musical soundtrack and i lost interest. Would still have this playing in the background though!

Great sound. Weird second song

Classic rock opera. Prog metal, lots of fun and a bit of a journey but probably won't revisit to listen again in a while.

MEAT LOAF IS FUN

Dripping with cheese! Some drama is fun, but it gets old.

I don't know how I've gone through life not really knowing what meatloaf sounds like, but this was not what I was expecting. Very theatrical, not at all what the cover would suggest. It did get a little much for me after a couple of songs, but it's fun.

I could see this being amazing for some, but every song felt so similar and it's not my taste. Kind of like a rock orchestra.

Didn't love meatloaf before, this didn't make me love him more

Certainly not what I expected, having never heard a single meatloaf song. It is very interesting and operatic, but I did think it overstayed its welcome somewhat. Just like regular meatloaf.

Unlike anything before or since

Favorite Tracks: Bat Out of Hell, You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night), Heaven Can Wait, All Revved Up with No Place to Go

Was okay maar niet geweldig

Very Rocky Horror! Gets a bit samey musically though.

Easy Listen. Need to listen to again to fully enjoy. Better for driving long distances.

better than exected

My eldest brother played this non stop before I'd even accumulated double digit birthdays, but I always remember it as theatrical rock, a bit of fun, and listening to it today, that's exactly what it still is, I can sing it word for word, etched into my childhood sponge brain. If it was playing I'd enjoy it for what it is, fun theatrical rock.

Sympa, je sais pas trop comment qualifier cet album mais il est cool Paradise by the dashboard light est cool

Couldn’t fully embrace the kitsch this time. But I embraced it a bit.

Great classic, Broke the mold when it came out.

Paradise by the Dashboard light was fun. Bat out of hell too

The musicianship is solid. The instrumentals are complex and varied. However, the lyrics are a word salad of what someone from another culture would consider rock and roll. Even though I would never buy this album, I'm going to rate it high because the band is so impressive.

Lots of loooooong songs that you know and maybe might want to sing along to.

Production and guitar by Todd Rundgren. Forgotten about that. Always thought the popular songs sounded a lot like Springsteen. Didn’t realize Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg played on it. No wonder. Enjoyed the first two songs. Then Heaven Can Wait killed the momentum with its sappiness. And the saxophone and backing vocals on All Revved Up were kinda grating. Side Two kicks off with Two Out of Three. Mediocre. Then comes Paradise by the Dashboard Light, which I’ve long had a soft spot for. In fact, I’m beginning to see that I like the two rock opera type songs on this record the best. And then it gets maudlin again for the final song. At least for the first three minutes or so. When it breaks out it ain’t so bad. In summary, Meat Loaf can sing. I like his voice. But he’s only as good as the material. And honestly, I liked this album more than I ever would’ve guessed.

that was a long opening song, but the guitar/bass was amazing and i almost cried at the end of this 9 minute song (could be that I keep seeing memes about gojo dying). Amazing ability to create emotion in their music Second song was a lot more lively/pop sounding than the first one. I enjoyed the chorus of female voices towards the end and the claps. "oh you took the words right out of my mouth" Third song started out a little too gospelly for me but it sounds like it will build up and i enjoy that. way shorter songs too. it did not build up and i hated how much of a love song it was (wow im bitter) Fourth song- I can see this song played in a 70s movie with the main characters driving away. maybe a montage of them driving through the city (I like the high pitched voice and the saxophone) skipped the fifth song- should go back. the sixth song is very rock and i love it. I mean like the type of rock in teen beach movie with the bikers and i enjoy that vibe. but it is also 8 minutes and I am not a fan of that. it changes sound in the middle of the song and i very much enjoy that middle part a lot. ending track was solid and great pick to end album

actually like this one a lot 3 stars and it may grow on me even more

Was good. Songs a little long

its p good but dont like the old rock sound kinda repetetive and just a wall of the same sounds doesnt make me wanna move

Kindof like a score from a musical.

first listen it's a little too broadway for me

Meatloaf has never been a favorite of mine, but this was a pivotal album all around.

My mom loves this album, so I gave it a shot. Aside from the two famous songs (Paradise and Took the Words), none really did anything for me. So yeah, sorry mom, I can't see it.

So sorry to meatloaf but I was absolutely not in the headspace for this one having been up for 24 hrs. Sorry to do this energetic campy romp that dirty.

The wolf-rapey part was unnerving, but I appreciate the piano arrangements and the overall album is well produced.

Now this is some power pop rock. Not for me, but Paradise by the Dashboard Light was good.

A classic, but unfortunately the album is not as strong as the title track.

Fun but dated.

3.5/5. Such mixed feelings about this artist, dude would still be alive today if it wasn’t for his dumbass views on COVID.

My husband loves this. I like this. Maybe it's a guy thing :-)

Enjoyable but surprisingly it's a bit over the top for me

Not awful, but not excellent either. A decent overall length album given the title track meanders more than the Missisipi. Didn't actually mind the opener all considered but then it just gets too honky tonk and baroque. What the hell was that about roses in the mouth of a wolf??

A campy B-grade horror flick purified and condensed into audio form, including the over-the-top melodrama, cinematic voiceovers, and of course sex with blatantly underage women 🤢

It's a good album, understandably well loved, even if it's not something I'd put on I can certainly appreciate it

So cheesy and so fun. The title track really is where it’s at for me, but the ballads are good.

Somewhat better than I expected but I don't think I'll be coming back to it.

cool, not my cup of tea composition-wise, maximalism in rock just sounds really weird to me

I don’t really care for it. I get that some people idolize Meat Loaf. I just think the songs are too long for what they are and sound like they come out of Grease.

I don't think I'd ever put this on, on my own volition, but it's an interesting album, and I've glad to have listened to it. Bat Out Of Hell and Paradise By the Dashboard Light are catchy. But I was a little put off by the dialog on You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth, haha. So many of the songs feel like they're 2-3 songs in one.
