Reviews (page 7 of 14)

Meatloaf is so funny because he basically sings musical theater songs about fucking, but then the album art is like a panel from demon superhero comic.

Considered giving this a 5 as it's pretty enjoyable and has some classic tracks. In the end I just don't really want to listen to it repeatedly or frequently

If you embrace the Camp this is super fun. Wall of sound with musical theatre lyrics.

Bangers.

Horny boomer cringe. Play it loud!

way better than I thought it would be. really 3.5 stars but i'll roud up for the fun.

Already knew Bat out of Hell but not the other tracks. Aforementioned track is awesome but everyone knows that. I kind of liked the ‘punchline’ at the end of Paradise by the Dashboard Light. Album remains filed as Dad music to me. Extra star for Bat out of Hell being epic though

Feels like a watching a musical. Very entertaining. Bruce Springsteen and Billy joel vibes, same era so makes sense. Great balance with softer and harder sounds, but did get slightly repetitive. I would LOVE to see a Styx album soon. Lot of these are oldies good but cheesy.

Loved it

Huge fan of this album. Only thing keeping me from 5 stars is the fact that it's hard for me to get thru some of the songs in one go (they get a lil repetitive). But damn bat out of hell, PBTDL, you took the words right out of my mouth, just bangers on bangers here.

I know it’s not the critical darling, but this album is fucking fun. I would’ve loved to see this live in concert. It’s straight up musical theater. There’s dialogue, humor, scenes, etc. and the fact that a guy like Meat Loaf can become a rock star gives hope to us all.

Tesko je biti objektivan prema nekome s tako dobrim imenom, ali i album je bio bas fora. Bar dovoljno da cu ga spamati danas opet.

I most associate Meat Loaf with Rocky Horror. Very easy album to get through due to the short play time, listened 3x. Juxtaposition of dive bar biker metal and love ballads. Paradise by the Dashboard Light had me dying, an anthem for couples in desperate need of therapy, true romance 😹. Easy listen.

Overblown, pompous pop-rock. What's not to like?

Good ol' Meatloaf. First time I've ever listened to the whole Album and Paradise by the Dashboard lights was hilarious. His music is too dramatic for me but it was really well done.

2024-02-28...

Never mind the purpled prose and tortured metaphors, this is good stuff. The big guy can really sing, the studio band is terrific, and the wry bit of story is sure to make you smile at yourself. Shades of Queen....

This is a major nostalgia album for me. My mom used to play this all the time, and I've been listening to it for as long as I can remember. This album is full of fun piano rock ballads performed with so much energy. Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman make for an awesome duo. If you've ever listened to a Meat Loaf album after those two broke up, you'll know that the sound by Meat Loaf and song writing by Steinman are both crucial to their success. "Bat Out of Hell", "Two out of Three Ain't Bad", and "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" are all iconic. I can see how some people might get bored by the repetitive nature of a 9 minute long song, but that's also part of their epicness. This album is epic, iconic, but a little repetitive. That's ok though, because two out of three ain't bad.

Jim Steinman knew how to write a damn pop song. Bat Out of Hell (the song and the album) is a crushing, pompous, opera-rock adventure. The album cover is also a perfect representation of what you get across the 46 minutes and change of musicianship on BOOH. The older I get, the more I appreciate this album and the story behind its creation. Meatloaf and Steinman were a dynamic duo. Still very listenable with the exception of the last song that I find boring, but not off-putting. Interesting factoids from Wikipedia: *The album was developed from a musical, Neverland, a futuristic rock version of Peter Pan, which Steinman wrote for a workshop in 1974. *Paradise By the Dashboard Light is divided into four parts--Part 1: Paradise, Part 2: Baseball broadcast, Part 3: "Stop Right There!", Part 4: Praying for the end of time *In early live performances of (Paradise by the Dashboard Light), Part 4 was followed by a spoken-word epilogue in which the two characters, presumably having been married for a number of years, argued about what to keep after the couple's divorce. The argument was cut short by the female shouting "...And I'll keep the baby!", which left Meat Loaf's character, previously unaware of the pregnancy, speechless; immediately after, he ended the argument by screaming incoherently at her. The exchange was repeated with different female vocalists, in different versions and with different endings, in most of Meat Loaf's subsequent live tours and remained in the set until his death, when it was still occasionally performed by Meat Loaf and his featured vocalist Patti Russo. *Bat Out of Hell has sold over 43 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. *Steinman and Meat Loaf had difficulty finding a record company willing to sign them. According to Meat Loaf's autobiography, the band spent most of 1975 writing and recording material, and two and a half years auditioning the record and being rejected. *[Record company exec] Steve Popovich reportedly listened to the (spoken word) intro to [You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth] and it became a key factor of his accepting Bat Out of Hell for Cleveland International Records. *Phil Rizzuto's baseball play-by-play call for "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" was recorded in 1976 at The Hit Factory in New York City by Rundgren, Meat Loaf, and Steinman. As an Italian Catholic, Rizzuto publicly maintained he was unaware that his contribution would be equated with sex in the finished song. However, Meat Loaf asserts that Rizzuto claimed ignorance only to stifle criticism and was fully aware of the context of what he was recording. *Steinman had wanted equal billing with Meat Loaf on the album's title; he wanted it to be called "Jim Steinman presents..." or "Jim and Meat", or vice versa. For marketing reasons, the record company wished to make 'Meat Loaf' the recognizable name. As a compromise, the words "Songs by Jim Steinman" appear relatively prominently on the cover. The singer believes that this was probably the beginning of their "ambivalent relationship." *The album launched the career of Steinman, who would later begin producing his records as well; he was specifically sought by Bonnie Tyler on the basis of his work and production styles on the album to revitalize her career and produce an album specifically modeled on the productions of Phil Spector. ... Aside from Tyler, he composed and produced songs for musicians such as Air Supply, Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand, the Sisters of Mercy, and Celine Dion. Standouts: Bat Out of Hell, You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night), Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Paradise By the Dashboard Light

Super fun album. Really enjoy the guitar throughout, and Meat Loaf has a great voice.

Awesome album art! Interesting mix of rock songs and sappy love songs. Great use of piano throughout. Bat out of Hell (nearly 10 minutes) Two out of Three Ain't Bad Paradise by the Dashboard Light (8.5 minutes)

Progressive glam rock, very impressive rock opera

Always loved this album, but it’s a crazy mix of hard hitting bangers and love song anthems that changes the tempo too drastically and doesn’t maintain the energy or vibe to get a 5.

I grew up listening to this album. So fun to relisten. I like how the album looks so much more intense than the actual music. I like all these songs.

Pretty fun songs, not my fav style but defs talented musicians

Solid rock album, title song was v good

Day 3 - Bat Out Of Hell (1977) Having given "Surfer Rosa," my previous album, 2 stars, I nearly cried when I saw "Bat Out Of Hell," seemingly a metal album. Nonetheless, Marvin Lee Aday, or Meat Loaf, is written as "one of the best selling music artists in history," and known for his "his powerful, wide-ranging voice and theatrical live shows." Can't lie, I'm impressed. Excited to give "Bat Out Of Hell" a spin, it seems promising. ── ࣪˖ ࣪ ⊹ ࣪ ˖ ── To start off, "Bat Out Of Hell" is very extravagant and operatic with an Elton-style piano introduction and a shredding guitar. Marvin and Jim Steinman, the composer, really outdid themselves. The song finally slows down as the vocals commence; Marvin has a surprisingly strong and rich voice. From the title and cover, I expected the album to be a lot more heavy, slurred and incomprehensible. The debut track already cements how theatrical, over-the-top and impactful the album is going to be. "Bat Out Of Hell" is nine minutes of pure eargasm: fun and futuristic, a rollercoaster of emotions. "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" is strangely theatrical: it starts off with a dialogue, "On a hot's summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses? Yes." Although the dialogue may seem silly at first, I've a feeling that it's a metaphor for something much, much darker. My theory is cemented as Marvin hisses, "I bet you say that to all boys." The song is incredibly solid and fun as well. "Heaven Can Wait" is a shorter, but more gentle and serene ballad whilst "All Revved Up with No Place to Go" springs back into Marvin's original, loud and pretentious sound. I'm a little disappointed at all the negative reception on the album. Seriously, people need to relax a bit. "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" and "For Crying Out Loud" are more driven symphonic ballads. Overall, the album is a genuine rollercoaster, it has something for everybody. I'm surprised I haven't heard of this album sooner, honestly. The key takeaway is to not judge an album from it's cover! I would've never discovered this fun gem had I skipped the album, would I? :>

Original, theatrical

Huge album when it came out. I remember trying to figure out what the heck it was when I first heard it. Rock? Yes. Broadway? Yes. Top 40? Yes. Sappy cry at home on a Friday night alone? Yes. I still leave “Dashboard” on when it comes on the radio. Mostly waiting for Scooter’s part.

Every teenage boy’s favorite rock opera. Still a fantastic album. 4.5 stars.

good production quality. I tend to like rock opera

This is just fun.

Haven’t heard it in a while. Wanted to hate it. Like a Broadway play/ Grease III??but lightning in a bottle. Todd Rungren produces an album that sells 40m copies A well packaged effort but maybe too much of a package. Voice is great and musicians are great. Why am I still writing about meatloaf

Classic. Theatrical rock with Meatloaf belting it out. Interesting arrangements and backup vocals

Liked it better than I thought I would. So this is Meat Loaf.

This albums sounds like a mesh between Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, and Queen. Some of the songs like paradise by the dashboard light are so over the top and dramatic. It makes for a great listen all the way through. 3.67

Muy buen disco. Espectacular la voz y las guitarras. Una pena que se haya oído demasiado.

Very fun. I love rock operas.

Very wild ride on the bat out of hell. Expected a metal album from the cover, then was treated to a performance theatrical performance like an American version of Queen. The Guns n' Roses like moaning session in the middle of it really tied everything together.

Meat Loaf is what Bruce Springsteen would’ve sounded like had he gone to Broadway sooner. Or if he cared about making an absolute hit record in the late ‘70s. You’d never guess it from the pulp fantasy art cover (or maybe you would?!), but this is a really fun album, aware of its own silliness. It’s in on its own joke, and that’s why it works—like all good bits, it takes the humor as seriously as it takes the music. Of course, Meat Loaf is more than the iconic front man: it’s about Jim Steinman’s songs (I mean, he’s on the album cover’s marquee!); it’s about co-vocalist/love interest/antagonist Ellen Foley; and it’s about Todd Rundgren’s unapologetically bombastic production. The cliché-adjacent song titles hint at classic tunes, and they manage the most surprising magic trick of the whole record—they deliver on what they promise. The twin standout tracks, “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” and “Paradise By the Dashboard Light” could’ve been titles ripped from the ‘50s, and they sort of are, only with an updated ‘70s Rock sensibility. The only complaint is that you have to wade through most of the record to get to them, but when you do, they pack such a satisfying one-two punch that you’re just happy to be there. Meat Loaf exploded onto the scene like the titular Bat Out of Hell, and he put in some acting work, but this is his deserved platinum-covered legacy. He’d have one more monster hit, returning to that well for a Part II and giving us one more instant classic single. Rest in Power ballads, Meat Loaf.

Love this album, so powerful from start to finish. I think I heard it for the first time a year ago, and it only seemed better this time.

This was my first time listening to Meat Loaf and I expected a much harder rock from the album cover. I enjoyed it. I had always heard that people made fun of meat loaf and now I am not sure why. These are solid tracks that make me thing of Rock Love Ballads. Overall super enjoyable. 4 stars

Excellent. Kinda silly, but the arrangements are great and super fun.

Enjoyed it a lot actually .Especially the middle of the record, the three track run from "You took the words right of my mouth" which is a classic to "Heaven can wait" to "All revved up with no place to go" to "Two out of three Ain't bad" which was by far my favourite

Man, it's bombastic and operatic. Really enjoy the seriousness with which they take it.

A Meat Loaf master piece. Strong lyrics, fierce vocals.

First song was one of the most awesome listening experiences I've had in a while. A classic rock ballad. The rest was enjoyable to listen to, and reminded me of listening to classic rock with my dad when I was a boy. Good album, I'll definitely listen again.

I had a different experience with this album. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy it, but instead I didn't understand it. All the songs were a very lopsided love story. It didn't have any emotional tweaks that were there when I was younger. I think I outgrew this one.

Fun unique album. Great!

A good meatloaf album with a lot of his popular songs that I enjoyed.

Sounds a lot less aggressive than it looks. Feels like show music.

Operatic, excellent production by Todd Rundgren.

3.5 stars rounded up.

This album was a fun ride. I didn't know Mr. Loaf went so hard.

Operatic

Like the soundtrack to a musical that didn't exist for another 40 years. Where other rock operas stretched rock music out to the grandiose limits of opera, Meat Loaf instead confines all that is opera into the form of a rock song. Earnest. Bombastic. Ridiculous and refined. Glam as grit. And truly emblematic of those aching teenage years, at least more so than any of the moodiness that you think it's all about at the time.

I've heard a lot of the first Springsteen... I liked it a lot...

I love it. It’s weird, but I love it. Put it on the wall!

Spotify would not play the last 2 songs.

Liked this one more than I expected to, especially after reading that it was based on a rock opera Peter Pan concept.

Loved this album when I first heard it about 30 years ago and still really like the OTT production

Really great sounds like a really good musical

Rock operas, blijkbaar super nice, maar to be expected

Stop right there! I've got to know right now if you'll love me forever? Nope, baby, baby, don't need to sleep on it ... I love certain tracks on this record until the end of time. "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is at the top of that list, along with "Bat Out of Hell." It's too bad we lost The Loaf to COVID. He was certainly an odd rock hero whose music has endured and who was great in "Fight Club" as the guy with breast cancer who coddled Edward Norton between his man boobs. My favorite all-time story of The Loaf was the girl who wrote about him being her softball coach growing up. Just a regular guy who loved hot dogs, baseball, fast cars, frilly shirts and operatic rock.

Not my type but cool

Ótimo vocal Guitarras muito boas

Another album I was already very familiar with. I got big into this album over the pandemic, in all its goofy, overdramatic glory. Every track is a banger. Big, silly, stupid fun.

Classic album.

Great album! Favourite song: Two out of Three Aint Bad!

Prime example of Operatic Rock. Slice of time a la Rocky Horror.

Great Album! Tons of Memories!

Heard half the album a thousand times on the radio but never the whole album. So obviously a rock opera but I never realized. Corny and catchy as hell.

A real blast of nostalgia, epic and bombastic. Highlights for me will always be Bat out of hell and two out of three. Only let down is the live tracks

An over produced, rock opera straddling the bounds of parody. Its also brilliant. Wall to wall bangers from a ridiculous human that never takes himself too seriously.

I wasn’t expecting too much when I saw that Meat Loafs Bat Out Of Hell the was the next album to explore, however I was pleasantly surprised. It’s easy to see why this 1977 rock opera of an album is loved worldwide. It’s a well written, produced and recorded album of singalong anthems and toe tapping Melodie’s. Coming off the back of the success of The Rocky Horror Picture Show it compliments the rock opera/musical Genre. Highlights were two out of three ain’t bad and dashboard.

Rock opera. Theatrical. Great if you are in a saucy mood.

Not bad, preferred the darker vibes than the operatic vibes.

This was over the top and all over the place but kinda epic. Stand-outs: Bat out of Hell, For Crying Out Loud

Sort of corny and schmaltzy at times, but fun and really good overall. Meatloaf sounds great when he's wailing. Can't believe I never knew Max Weinberg and the Night Court actress were on this. Don't know if something like this would pass today. 3.9

Забавное... очень тягучее, протяжное, с кучей выебонов, как мы любим. Честно, понимаю людей, которые покупают этот альбом и хотят его на пластинках; реально крутая вещь.

Asiago, pepper jack, sharp cheddar, Meatloaf, gouda. Those are my favorite cheeses in order. I don't even care how over the top or nonsensical it is; I fucking LOVE this album. I have very fond memories of listening to it in the garage at 14 years old. I acted like it was a guilty pleasure to me too. Like it would've been embarrassing to be caught listening to. Yes, this album is everything people say it is; it's cheesy, theatrical, operatic and quite silly, but I couldn't tell you one artist today who's putting out albums like this. Just look at the lineup of personnel here! You've got Todd Rundgren, Roy Bittan of the E Street Band, Edgar Winter on sax, and entire world class orchestras! One of the more eclectic groups of musicians working to make this insanity come to life. It's pretty easy to see why this is one of the highest selling records of all time. So does it get 4 or 5 stars from me? Eh, let me sleep on it.

Wagnerian, over-the-top operatic rock rife with heightened tales of love, lust, and rebellion featuring one of the greatest album covers ever printed.

Ridiculous

Like a better version of the Kiss album I got a while back. Enjoyed the first half more than the second, but I'll happily round up to 4⭐

There's a reason he was Eddie in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Meat Loaf was a theatre kid at heart. These songs are *funny*. "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" has delightful production values and tells a common story in an interesting way. The bombastic arrangements as a whole belong to an off-off-broadway production of a rock opera featuring teenagers coming of age. Looking at it like that, this album has merits. But the single trick doesn't play well for the rest of Meat Loaf's career. He gets away with Bat out of Hell. The rest of his oeuvre is another story entirely.

Very theatrical with long blasting rock ballads that remind me of his rocky horror days, I quite liked it, a few tracks fell off but were brought back by the female vocal which was punchy and as raw as his.

I don’t really have much to say. I like it! It’s cheesy and I love it. Reminds me of Jeff Wayne’s Version of War of the Worlds. Sweet.

Never heard anything before except for I'll Do Anything for Love. Great voice and interesting arrangement. Did not know that Musical soundtracks vere that popular.

Meatloaf has always been a little cheesy and melodramatic for my taste, but I think he had a sense of humor about it and he seemed like a really nice guy. I eulogize home with this: “His name was Robert Paulson.”

What's no to like!

A wild ride.

So dumb, so fun

The cheesiest lyrics I've heard yet. I liked this a lot more than I expected to.

I don't know what to think

This is an album of truly epic proportions. While there are times, namely toward the beginning of the record, where Steinman’s writing influences are more prominent, this thing really builds its identity brilliantly, and by the final track, through Meat Loaf’s powerful voice and Steinman’s larger-than-life arrangements, its clear that you will never have another experience like this with an album.

First experience with Meat Loaf. I really like it.

Have always liked Meat Loaf! Weirdly sexy.

Bat Out of Hell and Paradise by the Dashboard Light are great. Low 4. Mr. Loaf should have gotten the jab.

I like it, he's a silly goose.

Great album. Reminds me of HS days. 4

Rimelig sprød spade, måske liidt amerikaner kitsch. Kan være jeg er biased fordi jeg lige har hørt en masse plader jeg ik kunne lide, men den får en lav 4’er. Lækkert nok at lytte til, men ikke inspirerende

Fun rock opera. Funny lyrics, goofy but fun.

Better than I expected and remembered

It's a great record still

It's important to know, if you've never heard this, that Steinman (the principle writer on this project) developed this material from what was originally a rock opera. It really shows -- especially in the several songs herein that sound like mini-medleys. They shift and morph and return to themes (though primarily within arrangements rather than across the record). It's downright fun. The rock & roll is in full effect here, as is the goofy camp of a musical. If you can suspend your disbelief enough to buy the drama they're selling (in the classic Paradise By The Dashboard Light, it's two teenagers deciding whether or not to get it on), several of these are absolute anthems that build to duets singing counterpoint, refrains returning, major fifths spiking and space for an obvious audience sing-along. You'll need to check your own self-seriousness at the door to enjoy any Meat Loaf, but that's true as much of the singer as the eponymous food. Just sit down and have a slice. This is the epitome of schlock masterpiece.

Þetta er ekki uppáhaldið mitt, en þetta er samt svakalega gott stöff á köflum, og auðvitað pródúceraði Todd Rundgren þetta, maður heyrir í honum í bakröddunum.

This album doesn't start like a batout of hell! By the time I got to love by a dashboard light, I was singing along with it at full volume. My dog was not impressed.

This one surprised me. It’s fun

Always felt like meatloaf should have been bigger. This album is a good reason why I feel that way.

If this doesn't make you even a little joyful then you need to see a doctor.

A great rockopera by the mighty Meatloaf. So many good songs by this very talented singer. Even if all songs not had stood the test of time its mostly great songs

sick first track. it's very uplifting and loud, just the way i like it!!

Short album but long ass songs. It wasn’t super deep but I had a good time listening and I liked the instrumentals so overall I enjoyed

Solid. Well done Mr Loaf.

Love these drawn out tracks. Great songs on here. Some on the playlist now

Might not musically be my favorite thing we've done so far, but something about this is just entertaining to listen to.

Love how theatrical this album is—both musically and vocally. Ridiculously long songs often drive me crazy, but I didn’t mind it so much with this album, which says a lot! Long live Meat Loaf 🫡

Theres a level of theatrics and operatics that can't be beat. Truly what I think defines rock opera

so much fun!

Bat Out of Hell- 8.5/10 You Took the Wrong Right Out of My Mouth- 8/10 Heaven Can Wait - 8/10 All Revved Up With No Place to Go - 8/10 Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad - 8.5/10 Paradise by the Dashboard Light - 8/10 For Crying Out Loud - 9/10 TOTAL - 58/70

This was a really fun album. I enjoyed it. A little quirky at parts but it didnt hurt the alhum. It's over the top. Some of the songs could have been cut down as they did go on a little too long. Better than a 3 not really a 4 but I will round up

Love meatloaf!

Don't take it too seriously and this is a fun album

Bat Out of Hell - Goed nummer, hier luister ik weleens naar You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth - Bijzonder begin.

Long songs and a lot of fun. Sounded like the soundtrack to an epic combined with classic rock.

BIG VIBE!!! 4*

Počúvateľné

It's utterly bombastic from the off, and I kind of love that. It's unapologetic, leaning heavily into the grandiose rock opera thing. Lots of foot tapping happening across a lot of these songs, but there's a lovely ballad in 'Heaven Can Wait' too.

Mostly familiar. Sort of show tunes. Fun for a moment.

This is just bags of fun, isn't it? Bombastic, over the top melodramatic. Someone on the site described it as 'Springsteen for musical theatre kids' and I quite like that - taking a pretty ordinary story and elevating it to make it worth telling to the whole world. That said, it goes a bit too OTT in places (do we really need almost nine minutes of both Paradise By The Dashboard Lights and For Crying Out Loud consecutively? I don't think so). Still, title track and For Crying Out Loud are just brilliant, so it's a 4/5 for me.

This is a fun album and Paradise By the Dashboard Light is an all-time banger of a song. I love the piano on these songs. I read a review that compared this sound to Born to Run and I can see it. They certainly both have a certain epic quality to the songs that really draws me in. There's definitely some cheesiness, and a couple of the ballads are too theatrical, but overall I'm glad to have listened to this album.

Rockopera. Finner mig själv fundera hur bra Springsteen skulle gjort albumet. Är det Steinmann eller Meat Loaf som är genier här?

Bat Out of Hell II is more my era but this is definitely a classic

and ya took the words right outta my mouth.......................

Very theatrical, great vocals, although very cheesy. Enjoyed a lot!

I think amount of times I've heard these songs over the years has made me take them for granted. I didnt realize these all came out on one album - I imagine it would've been mind blowing to hear them all for the first time when it was first released. I wish I could've been there.

i feel like Meat Loaf is kind of thought of as a joke-y artist but this was really good. big and cinematic and crazy. a lot of christmas vibes for some reason and some springsteen vibes

Bombastic, brazen and really quite brilliant. Just a truly enjoyable listen with some superb musicianship. It's undeniably not high art - or even anything close, really - but for 46 minutes of pure fun, not many records are likely to beat Bat Out of Hell. A low to mid 4 for this.

Honestly a great album, worth a relisten

Grew up on this album, know and love every song

Some beautiful songs for an album called bat out of hell haha. Overall I liked it

Some good classics.

Just a banging good time. More camp than expected but ain’t nothin wrong with that.

I went into this expecting to not enjoy it, I was aware of this album's reputation and thought it was going to be too retro and naff to enjoy. However I'm very pleased to say that it is good, yes, it's over the top and ridiculous, but in a very fun and theatrical way, when you take it for what it is, it's an hour of camp nonsense.

wasnt expecting this out of meatloaf. pleasantly suprised

If you ever wanna feel you’re in an 80’s movie, please listen to this masterpiece

Interesting piano based rock n roll

Fun, bombastic, high energy, perfornative

Cheesy, operatic rock 'n roll - pure fun.

Bedre enn jeg trodde ut ifra artistnavn og album

"Bat Out of Hell" by Meat Loaf is a rock opera masterpiece that's as grandiose as it is timeless. Released in 1977, it's a theatrical rollercoaster of passion, power, and heartache. Tracks like the epic "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" and the title track "Bat Out of Hell" are legendary for their bombastic arrangements and Jim Steinman's cinematic songwriting. The album's production, under Steinman's direction, is a symphonic rock spectacle, featuring soaring guitar solos and operatic choirs. While "Bat Out of Hell" is known for its over-the-top theatrics, it's undeniably infectious and captivating. Its enduring popularity and influence on rock music are a testament to its enduring appeal. This album is a wild ride through the heart of rock 'n' roll, earning a well-deserved 4/5 rating.

Theatrical rock isn't that bad! Heard before. Was a bit scared because of the runtime of each song, but they segued into each other while listening. Quite enjoyed it. So it was only right for him to be in Rocky Horror! + Bat Out Of Hell + You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth + All Revved Up With No Place To Go + Paradise By The Dashboard Light

Pretty catchy mixture of heavy metal and showtunes. Paradise by the Dashboard Light was quite amusing

La verdad me gustó, tiene demasiado de todo pero no al punto que te abruma, sino exagerado dónde encontrás un montón de puntos llamativos

About as 70s rock opera as you can get. Good album but only like 2-3 songs as standalones.

Almost feels like a musical play/movie. Long songs that tell interesting stories with different styles.

unapologetic, operatic, flamboyant, and fun + classic rock n roll feel, reminds me of Elton John; like the chorus melody of You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth; mad sax on All Revved Up with No Place to Go; the funk break in the middle of Paradise By the Dashboard Light is fun, also hilarious baseball announcer overlay; love the opening to For Crying Out Loud, evocative, a fun ride

Paradise by the dashboard light is love

Liked this a lot more than I expected. Still a bit cheesy but a lot of really catchy songs and some grit too.

Meat loaf is solid

Over the top outrageous. The songs that hit are fun but still musically impressive. The songs that miss, just kind of feel flat. But, the whole album works as a concept. 4/5 Would listen again

Already love this album. Bangers only!

Would have been a 5 if it weren’t for the jarring inclusion of Ballads. Still good ballads mind you.

Bat out of hell; het begin daarvan doet me heel erg denken aan een Mario Kart liedje ofzo 10/10 album, nu al. You took the words right out of my mouth is een echte banger. Favourites: You took the words right out of my mouth, bat out of hell(Eerste 10 seconden) , Paradise by the dashboard light

Favorieten: All Revved Up with No Place To Go, Paradise By The Dashboard Light, For Crying Out Loud

Theatraal, bombastisch, iconisch. :-)

Very cool! It's the type of rock I like!

On the verge of being overblown, but the great hooks keep it focused & grounded. And isn’t it being overblown what’s fun, anyway?

It's nice to hear a good singer once in a while in this list. The two slow songs I didn't care much for, especially "For Crying Out Loud." It just went on too long. But the rest was great. Five out of seven ain't bad. Favorite track: Paradise By the Dashboard Light.

Campy overdramatic 70s rock and great fun.

doot doot ain’t no doot i love this album

Solid album, got me feeling energized my parents really like this one

Dramatic and larger than life. Meat Loaf screams, cries, rejoices all throughout the album, 7 8-minute songs about hell and love. God, the 70s were epic!

In a Venn diagram of metal and showtunes, I am the exact center. Meat Loaf is still inside the part where they intersect, but a little more to the showtunes side. Result: I really fucking dig Meat Loaf, I just wish he could amp up the heaviness just a smidge more.

Meat Loaf is undeniably an amazing performer with one of the most powerful singing voices in rock. His rock operas are theatrical and entertaining, his music tells stories with their composition. This album seemed to drag a little bit, but it could’ve just been because I listened to it in a traffic jam.

Cheesy, over the top, melodramatic....and I loved it. His name is Robert Paulson!

Hadn't listened to this in years. Still awesome!

I remembered this album being corny, but it was so much better than I remember

A classic from a guy who turned out to be a shithead. 4 stars.

Such a great album. I didn't know how many great musicians participated in this. It's Todd Rundgren, his band, and most of the E-street band? That's who's playing on this? How did I not know that? It's great. Plus, Meatloaf was like the Jack Black of the 70s-80s - just a fun, over the top personality.

what a goofy, wacky album. i think another reviewer described this as "bruce springsteen for theatre kids" which feels pretty accurate. definitely thought this was going to be worse considering all the derision and groans meat loaf got in popular culture while i was growing up. favorites: you took the words right out of my mouth (hot summer night), paradise by the dashboard light

goofy, cheese, and extremely catchy dad rock for theater kids. would listen again! 4.5/5

It's bombastic, epic, campy, over the top, but really damn fun at the end of the day! I've heard the title track before and always enjoyed how wild and a wall of sound it was as a rock opera, but the whole album turned out to be an extension of that song, with Meatloaf's charisma and vocals on full display. His voice powers into the forefront on the title track and others like Paradise By the Dashboard Light, but also croons with sincerity on ballads like Heaven Can Wait. The instrumentation is great all over this record, and feels like a Springsteen record turned up to 11 (with Max Weinberg and Roy Brittan being all over this album too!). Wailing guitar solos, epic piano and sax moments, that wall of sound Springsteen has, all of these are present here. It's a really enjoyable listen!

Unexpectedly epic...

Pretty good operatic rock album. The hits were bangers.

pretty epic at times

feels a bit dated but wow anyway!!

Have to give it a 4 just for nostalgia

A lot of fun! I was familiar with two of the tracks, but the rest held up too. That spoken word intro to "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" was a bit horny! I quite enjoyed it on these play throughs, but I imagine it might grow a bit tiresome with repeated listens? Fave track - "Bat Out of Hell" - gotta be, really. It's anthemic - makes a great karaoke song for getting the whole room joining in...

paradise by te dashboardlight isgrotendeels verantwoordelijk voor deze rating. ultiem nummer om op te dansen en zingen tijdens het koken.

I obviously knew Bat Out Of Hell and Paradise By The Dashboard Light but never heard the full album. While those two tracks are definitely the standout moments, It was an overall enjoyable album.

I read in Wikipedia that some critics pointed out the influence of the "Born to Run" album released a couple years earlier. I hadn't noticed, but singing along to "Bat out of Hell" it was quite easy to jump over to "Thunder Road" and back again. "All Revved Up with No Place to Go" also sounds like it could be a Springsteen number, a good one too. There's a few heard-'em-a-million-times songs here, especially "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", which is epic, and "Two Outta Three ain't Bad" which ain't bad. MeatLoaf has a versatile voice and effortlessly shifts from rockers to cheesy ballads, Steinman knows how to craft an album that capitalized on the excessive mid-seventies sound, before North America discovered punk, and Todd Rundgren nailed the production. I'm not crazy about the album but it's a timeless classic.

Amazing piano parts mixed in with hard rock for a unique sound

A prime slice of operatic cheese, outrageous and sleazy and mostly fun. Jim Steinman and Mera Loaf are a match made in glam heaven.

I've heard a couple of songs from this but never the full album. Big rock opera feel, really goes all out on the theatrics and cheesy songwriting, big choruses etc etc. It's a high 3, low 4 sorta situation. Didn't hold me the entire time but rocked when it did. And the cover art is fucking sweet. 4/5.

Love Meatloaf. Nothing quite like this album before or since (except other Meatloaf records, of course).

Lihamurekemies on helvetin kova. Mahtava rock ooppera levy. Eka kappale best

Cheesy as hell but wouldn't work if it wasn't

Never listened to this, but apparently I knew the singles from the radio. Really enjoyed it though, and I'm not that surprised. I was super into Bat Out of Hell 2 when I was a kid. 4/5

The fact that this is the third best selling album of all time sounds weird on paper, and I usually forget why until I actually play it. This is probably among the best mixture between rock and roll and Broadway that exists, and sounds so full of life. Some of it is a little too cheesy for words, but it’s a classic for a reason. B

Meat Loaf is a great fucking performer & a true American hero. RIP Mr Loaf.

Meat Loaf is the king of the rock opera. That’s really all there is to say. Shame he died from COVID complications after refusing the vaccine.

This is somehow my first time listening to this album, but Meatloaf's sound is still so recognizable that I feel like it's my 3rd or 4th spin. It's like Queen but with more motorcycles and cocaine.

Fond memories of my dad playing this one on nighttime car rides. There were only two songs on here I set aside on the project highlights playlist, but when the thing's good, it's great. It was incredible to look up stuff about this, each new detail more insane than the last. E Street band fresh off of "Born to Run?!" Todd Rundgren producing it after nobody else wants to touch this? One of the best-selling albums of all time, but barely seems to have sparked any imitators?? (in the US mainstream at least. A young Tobias Sammet was probably extremely warped by listening to this, entire subgenres of metal owe a lot to it, etc)

Amazing 4.5/5

The whole album gives rock opera vibes. 4.5

Very solid, glad i finally had a chance to spin it

I know without checking the reviews that this album is a polarizing one. You either love it or you really, really don't. But I mean, come on. It doesn't get much more fun than Bat Out of Hell. Big-hearted, anthemic, toe-tappingly, batshittingly brilliant music. Solid musicianship, with a deep bench of musical talent. Wildly excessive in the best way. Truly a unique album and a pure joy to hear. Let it go, snobby, this one is pretty great. High 4. Fave Songs: Paradise by the Dashboard Light, You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night), Bat Out of Hell, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, For Crying Out Loud

Classic over the top operatic rock.

The metal operatic itself. Lots of gusto, bravado and big vocals. Loads to love. RIP Big Guy

Cheesy at times but still pretty good

I’ve listened to this album many times before and it’s an absolute thrill. The only thing keeping it from being perfect is that some of the songs that aren’t 10/10s are a bit forgettable

I knew one song off of this album, and the rest of this album is pretty similar to that song, that is to say it's pretty good. I probably should have expected that. The instrumentation is very enjoyable and Meat Loaf did a great job on the vocals. The songs feel like they belong on the same album and carry the same energy, but manage to be distinct. This was a great listen. My favourite song was Paradise by the Dashboard Light.

Don't think I've ever heard this album in its entirety. Super cheesy, but I love it :D reminded me of ABBA at times. What a ride! Saved tracks: Bat Out of Hell, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, For Crying Out Loud

First track is a banger. The rest are good but not as great. 4 stars rip big man

Bättre som album än som de låtar jag hört strövis. Debutera med typ en rockmusikal? Det funkar mycket bättre än jag kunnat tro.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, but Paradise By the Dashboard Light is still my favorite. At times the lyrics were cheesy, but the instrumentals were great. Also, the album cover is good. Fave track(s): Bat Out of Hell, Paradise By the Dashboard Light

This was an incredibly fun, exciting, over-the-top, campy, dramatic album. Every song reaches heights with its own soaring level of epicness. It's one of those albums where the songs already seem like they're at 100%, and then all of a sudden the ending or outro takes off to 200%. Again, over-the-top is the word here. One thing is for sure: no song here can really be considered "dull". Really, the cohesiveness of this album makes it feel like a rock opera, and thanks to Jim Steinman's contributions here, if you didn't know better, you might could believe this to be an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, as well. Parts of this album definitely sound Springsteen-esque as well, if Springsteen took himself less seriously. Some new information for me was that this album was produced by Todd Rundgren. Ultimately, this isn't particularly relevant information, but as someone who appreciates Rundgren's music, I'm even more appreciative knowing that he helped make this album happen.

It is an alright album, although it is not quite my taste. “Rock opera,” would describe the album quite good.

Surprisingly horny

I turned this on to try drive my 5yo son out of the room, so I could take a shower in peace. Moments later, he was dancing with his ukulele as a guitar and singing along. I knew I had made a terrible mistake.

Passionate pubescent energy. A classic. Loved it.

Enjoyed this more than I would have enjoyed the sequel album. Eddie forever!

This might be first album I could come close to singing along to every song. Owned it in like 10th grade. Played a ton. Used to go to Waffle House with friends and always play two songs on the Juke Box: 1. One of the Waffle House themes because how ridiculous is it that they have those on the juke box and you’re paying them to advertise? 2. Paradise by the Dashboard lights to get my moneys worth. Love the silly intros. Fast talking. Cheese lyrics. Musically leaves a bit to be desired but whatever. I want to give this a five just to troll Ryan, but it’s a four

Yea great

First off, this album is incredibly stupid. But, it’s also ridiculously fun. Meatloaf takes you through musical journey complete with rock N roll, ballads, a backing gospel choir, and a never ceasing amount of cheese. 4/5.

Massive overkill of this album in the 80s, but nice to listen to it again after 30-35 years or so. Iconic album with iconic songs and album cover, a bit uneven for 5 stars.

nostagia wins again

Couple a goodies in there

Own this classic!

Never delved into meatloaf before. Melodramatic, over-the-top, cheesy as hell... almost proto-power/symphonic metal. Right up my street. Would give 4.5 if I could

Ce n’est pas identifié comme du glam rock, mais le côté théâtral me plaît vraiment, et j’ai toujours été fan de la voix de Meat Loaf.

very fancy rock opera

A very funny listening experience

It's like Queen looked at Springsteen and said, "That's all you got? Lad, let me show you how it's done." It's got every bit of theatricality and epic operaness of a Queen album but with the weird, americana-esque feel of Springsteen and just a little... offness that's pure Meat Loaf. It feels like a parody and a tribute at the same time. It's stupid how good this is. It's just huge.

It’s the Loaf, what more needs to be said?

This album is a classic of kitsch pop/rock to me. Powerful intro, catchy songs and lyrics all the way after. I would never say it's a masterpiece, but certainly an album I always enjoy listening. Always loved the delivery of Meat Loaf.

Some of the best rock ballads written. Operatic and completely over the top. Love it.

A classic album that never gets old!

Now this is what I call feel good music. Probably the most "rock opera" sounding album I've ever heard.

Amazing bombastic Rock and Rock. When it works it really works, just a couple of tracks that don't quite succeed.

Прослушано! Отличный альбом, к нему нужно вернуться.

I love this album and not ashamed to admit it, so many people I know just cannot tolerate it. It's goofy, cheesy and fun rock n roll. RIP Mr Loaf!!

Overblown rock and roll show tunes. But… if you’re into that kind of thing, this is as good as it gets. And what person of a certain age doesn’t remember Paradise by the Dashboard Light fondly? I never need to hear it again, but have to admit it was kind of fun.

It feels testy to say a single bad thing about Bat Out of Hell, as nicely put-together it is from cover art to final note. It really is only one complaint: The cycle doesn't obviously add anything to rock music, and the lulls are, on the other hand, obvious. It might be my seeming genetic aversion to musicals. In any case, the album is a worthy addition to the canon, and I love that motorcycle more the more I look at it.

perfect example of “don’t judge a book by its cover”

These are REALLY good songs. OK, prog rock isn't really my scene. It doesn't warm my heart. But nobody can deny that they are songs.

Really fun, really camp, a cool place for glam rock to go in 1977

Every aspect of this album is completely over the top. Orchestras combined with electric guitars, lyrics that tell stories. He belts out every song and doesn't hold back while singing. Most of the songs on this album were hits. Overall great album from the 70s

Possibly the best ballad album of all time. Iconic and timelessly fun songs. Some parts were a little overdone, but for the most part, a very solid album. 4/5

Surprisingly good, started out high tempo and mellowed with some really nice songs. Two out of three ain't bad was good

super cheesy rock opera album.. and it's awesome!

Heard this a lot as a child. He was talented.

Super over the top fun. I liked this a lot once upon a time but kinda moved on from it. In fact it's the kind of thing that I'd deny liking at all. I really don't know why. It's not perfect, the closer and Heaven Can Wait are kinda "meh" to me and the over the top-ness can be off-putting if you're not in the mood, but this is actually a lot of fun and maybe I should go back to it, or at least individual tracks when the mood strikes me.

Reminds me of Mom and Dads house having all the windows open!!! Cleaning and listening to this CD. 🧡

This is absolutely amazing kitsch. The production is fantastic and Meat Loaf has great range.

What a dang boo this album is. So theatrical and fun. How has it taken me 30 years of living to listen to this in full?

Sorry. I absolutely bloody love this.

I forgot how good this is. It's one of the biggest selling albums of all time for a reason. Good, solid, rock and roll, with a mix of theatre

Hailed as the best Meatloaf album for good reason. Too many ballads in my opinion (3 for a 7 song album). However, powerful vocals, good songwriting, and evocative imagery definitely make this a remarkable album. Add that I'm not a fan of Meatloaf in general, and that makes this something special for sure.

One of the best albums of all time.

Absolute classic

Most of the songs are really good, the highlights being: - Bat out of hell - Paradise by the dashboard light - All revved up with no place to go

7 ballads of rock

Super cheesy and super theatrical, it was no surprise to learn that this started life as a musical. It is a bonafide classic, though - completely uncool and completely timeless. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Bat Out of Hell Date listened: 23/08/22

fun and decent rock opera 3.5 not my style

I just love a good rock opera! Meatloaf's wailing vocals, the guitar riffs, the long journey of each song. And so many of the lyrics just reek of juicy adolescence, "You were licking your lips and your lipstick's shining, I was dying just to ask for a taste." You know he was jonesing for that Bonnie Bell bubblegum flavor... And c'mon, Paradise by the Dashboard Light comes on and I am 17 again. Oh to be doubly blessed! While I've heard Two Out of Three Ain't Bad so many times, this time I lol'd at the sentiment. I didn't realize Todd Rundgren produced this album. Every song rocks. Album art is classic.

To my surprise, I really enjoyed the album. Rock music is supposed to be driving, but in fact most of the time it misses the mark. Bat Out of Hell burns bright.

musica criativa, variações de metal com rock. 4/5

Good rock

Listen. It's not something I want to listen to, but I can't deny there's something here and I have to give credit to the audacity of the performances and concept. Poetry, theatre, musical; it's all here. What a debut! Shame he had to suffer as a child so much and has some pretty bad takes as of recent years.

metal deigor

It seems absolutely unique and does a great job of implementing a drama club like rock vibe. The songs vary timing to add drama and engagement. It is definitely a lot of fun and there isn't a bad track, though a Heaven Can Wait and For Crying Out Loud drag a bit.

I think this album was mandatory in the late 70s. A classic rock opera!

Pretty fun.

best songs bat out of hell you took the words right out of my mouth heaven can wait for crying out loud 8.5/10

Some phenomenal tracks. Meatloaf’s mixture of sincerity and sarcasm is really nice. Some songs are just a bit long and repetitive

+1 star as Ive always seen this album in the record store (near the meat puppets?). I appreciate it, but not necessarily like it.

Goodfun

I actually enjoyed it and thought the use of the baseball commentary was very clever.

Over the top, but that’s what makes it a great album.

An appropriate title. Hits like the titular Bat Out of Hell. Meatloaf is vocally destroying it! 7 songs 47 mins. EPIC!

A real classic and fun

Bonkers yet fun, cheesy, Springsteen-style metal-ish prog pop-rock
