Daydream Nation

I remember I didn't care for this album until I listened to it a second time. A revolution in alternative rock and just music in general, bringing the "no-wave" sensibilities and anti-authority attitudes out of the underground, and creating a masterpiece of distortion. Although he is a musical god to many, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, and Steve Shelley were the pantheon to people like Kurt Cobain as they stood for music which was powerful yet uncompromising. In all honesty, the record speaks in gibberish ninety percent of the time but I know it stands against consumerist sexist culture and that's enough. Thurston lays it all out in the first track: the world would be awesome if J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. was the president. If that sounds simple to you, fuck you.

There is just nothing in this music that appeals to me. It is a mix of both boring and annoying in turns

I've heard worse albums but I didn't care for the constant dissonance and endless instrumentals.

I just have a hard time enjoying an album that’s half dissonance. This album was a bit more musical than E.V.O.L. but I still had a hard time getting through it.

It felt a LOT better than the first sonic youth album I listened to. However, there were still many "make it stop" moments, so I still didn't like it.

Probably a 3.5 really, but I'll round up because I like the band and listening to it made me feel 19.

I don’t know, shit like this hits some kind of sweet spot for me like this is some weird shit but I can’t help loving it, 10/10 album

1,001 albums... I have a troubled relationship with Sonic Youth's middle-class, no-wave rebellion. I did buy Goo at the time and played it an awful lot for a year or two but I've never quite bought into them like many others do. That said, Teenage Riot is a lot of fun even if it sounds a bit like an early New Order track and Kim Gordon, in particular, has some great moments on this album. Overall, even though it outstays its welcome, I enjoyed it a lot more today than I have in the past (I did buy it a long time ago but it's spent most of its life on the shelf). Might dig it out again soon. Then again, might not.

Sonic Youth looks set to be another band I just don't get the hype for. Maybe a few relistens would improve my outlook but nothing about this album was interesting to me. Also, if your fourteen track album has FOUR seven minute tracks then you need to start cutting.

Origins of indie but sooo dissonant, I needed a Motown palette cleanser

The diversity of sound of Sonic Youth just blows me away. One moment, they are Sex Pistols, the next, Joy Division. Really good album.

This is definitely a challenging listen. The music isn't melodic, it's stressful and the guitars sounds like they are in pain the entire time. The vocals aren't necessarily pleasant either... it's a noisy, discordant album that i can only give them credit for doing their own thing. There's something in there, but i just don't get it.

It’s very rare that I don’t get to the end of an album but I had to turn this off after around 30mins when I saw I wasn’t even half way through. Mostly pretty generic garbage/garage punk but then breaking into complete nonsensical twatery. Deeply unpleasant.

Sonic Youth's most famous album and quite possibly their best. Teenage Riot is probably their best song but this album is full of classic SY songs. It's not quite a 5 star album for me as SY has some dissonant characteristics thatvI personally find difficult. 4 5 🌟

Seemed a bit confused to me, somewhere between rock, indie and punk. Starts off well with "Teen Age Riot" but goes down hill from there in my opinion and I started to lose interest.

Seminal album from one of the most intriguing bands in the last 40 years. I remember fondly discovering this work during my teenager years, listening to Teenage Riot and Silver Rocket nonstop, talking to my friends about it. No wonder why it is here!

Even the first song-Teenage Riot- deserves 10 stars.

A little too mellow for me

I really didn't like this very much. I'd give it a 2.5. I didn't hate it but it was so noisy and actually pretty boring for me for most of it. Probably was creative but it all blended together for me

Really great. Their fuzzed guitars create some immersive soundscapes. I felt hypnotized at times, which is something I quite like out of music. Sort of a punky mix between Joy Division and the Velvet Underground, perhaps? This is the kind of album one could have a nice dissociative episode to.

Teen Age Riot is one of the best opening tracks of all time, it situates the listener perfectly for what's to come on an album of hefty tracks. I love the flow and progression throughout, it all melds together so brilliantly. Favourite SY album to date. To agree with another listener, Thurston Moore is just such a dickhead. I have to attribute most of the band's success to Kim to be at peace with my listening experience; she's a goddess and a saint for putting up with Moore's shit as long as she did. Amazing album, so influential and impactful on a lot of bands I love. I adore this one.

Just recently read the like Gordon book. More of a 3.5 but will definitely listen to more.

everything, even the catchiest hooks, are drowned and enveloped in a layer of noisy fuzz, thumping toms and crashing cymbals. It creates a really cool, edgy sound that you'll hear ripple throughout alt rock during the 90s. Sonic Youth hit the right balance of playful and dark. Some of these riffs sound almost like metal riffs, and then some boarder on pop punk and indie. The vocal melodies toe this line as well with grunt punk shouts and more welcoming bright vocal melodies. Whether it's angry or upbeat, there's always a relentless energy that is at the core of every track. This album is long as hell, but never ever stops moving; it's constantly propelling forward with noise and drums and riffs and raw, kinetic punk soul - and that can probably be attributed to the post-punk present here. It's relentless angsty, but approaches it in a unique and artistic way.

This album in particular is so immensely influential, you can hear it from the very start. The influence can still be heard in music released nowadays. It's noisy, unrelenting, and unapologetically experimental.

Not a fan at all.

Strangely, this felt a lot like Nirvana to me. Which is good because I am a big fan of Nirvana. I had heard good things and how influential they were so I listened to one of their albums (I think it was "Goo"? Now I'm not sure.) and I just didn't get it. At the time it seemed like a lot of noise. Listening to this album, I "get" their sound a lot more. It was more enjoyable than I remember. I liked the layering of guitars and how it worked within the songs. Will I go out and seek more of their work? I don't know, but I do respect them a bit more and my stance on them has changed a bit.

Another difficult one. I feel like Sonic Youth is good for one real killer song on an album...and then the rest? Teen Age Riot is a bit of a bore for the first 80 seconds but it's quite good after that and has everything there is to like about the band - pace changes, off tempos, picking and strumming, distortion and wall of sound all in one. Add in blunt lyrics and the album should be really good. I wanted to like it more, but ultimately it felt too uneven. I'd say I really enjoyed about every third song (The Sprawl, Total Trash, Candle, and The Wonder/Hyperstation - they blended together) but the rest was sort of meh. Maybe the songs were too long (i.e., self-indulgent). I listened to it a bunch of times too, over a week. Super talented but I just couldn't get there. Makes me feel bad as an alternative rock fan but that's my conclusion.

I liked the first track Teen Age Riot, but then a lot of the album sounded similar. I hate repetition. I also hate noise and feedback and there was way too much of that (like Silver Rocket, The Sprawl, Rain King, and Total Trash - an aptly named song). Oh, and this album is long with its repetition and noise. Giving this a 2 because at least there were moments I liked (Teen Age Riot, Candle), but by the last five songs I just wanted it to end.

Overall didn't care for it. It was weird without being interesting or melodic.

One of the better Sonic Youth albums. Pretty much a classic.

The influence this album has had on music in the decades that followed is clear when you listen. You can hear the the early sounds of 90s grunge, noise rock, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and multiple others. It's also full of unique chord progressions and sound combinations like dissonance and percussive playing. Very cool album!

I feel like I'm right at the intersection between the Velvet Underground and indie bands that followed like Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. This album is a little too distorted and noisy for my delicate sensibilities, but the melodic instrumental stretches are nice.

Not for me

Love this album. Was going to give four stars since this is a classic, but on this listen I’m unfortunately feeling the runtimes of several tracks. Then Thurston Moore sang “there he goes again, my magic monkey friend” and the perfect score restored itself.

Sonic man

Just the most lost-sounding album in the world; distant vocals amid swirling guitars. Occasionally a little too discordant, but impressive and influential overall.

Better than the last Sonic Youth album I had on here (Goo) but not one I can see myself coming back to. Too long to hold my attention. Teen Age Riot is a banger though.

Nooit verder gekomen dan dat eerste nummer; de rest is ook zo zenuwachtig allemaal. Prachtige coverart wel!

Een hele zit. Hier moet je toch met iets meer aandacht naar luisteren. Dat lukte deze keer niet. Maar voordeel van de twijfel en dus 3 sterren.

Niet alle nummers zijn even goed, maar over het geheel is dit een van de beter beluisterbare Sonic Youth albums. Hier zijn het nog voor het merendeel echt nummers met een kop en staart, ipv eindeloos gepiel en gefeedback. En ook Kim Gordon's zang is hier nog best te pruimen, in tegenstelling tot het bronstige gehijg en gesteun op latere platen.

Cool album. Not perfect from start to finish, but this is the level of post-punk I look for.

Apart from some of the excessive feedback and a couple of tracks, this album was great to listen to. The trilogy was great, Teen Age Riot is a classic and enjoyed Eric's Song and Cross The Breeze. Enjoyed this more than Goo.

The sound has attained an expressive maturity unparalleled in the annals of the decade: there are still traces of the experimentalism of the early days, but appropriately camouflaged in balanced harmonies and cleverly referenced to the genres of the rock tradition. The motto is: diversity of style in the unity of the arrangement. The ingredients are basically the same as always: cold and distant vocals, strings stretched to the limit of noise, chaotic interweaving of counterpoints, obsessive chord repetitions, insistent percussiveness, alienation effects and tense atmosphere. Recommended for a friend almost ten years ago. I consider it a fundamental of Sonic Youth. I feel it like a super natural progression from the noisiness of Sister. Over here you can find it as well but in a much worked way, it's not noise because of it rather than be with a purpose.

Something of a masterpiece. It starts off with not only one of the best opening songs on any album, but arguably the best Sonic Youth song, period. This is the alternative album you're looking for. The one where Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore and company put everything together and were so prolific they had enough gems to merit a double album. And this things takes you on a freaking journey. Sonic Youth might be like good scotch in that they're something of an acquired taste, but once you're into them, you're all in. Look no further to hear why Kurt Cobain and several others were so inspired by Sonic Youth. Just say yes.

Better than I was expecting

After rating one of the other Sonic Youth albums we've gotten so far 1 star and another one 4 stars, my expectations for this one were pretty uncertain. Unfortunately, this one is a major dung heap again. It's just chaotic noise to me.

Possibly Sonic's best

Epic. A classic. There are the obviously hooky bits, like Teen Age Riot, and there are grating that parts begin to sound perfect too with repeated listens. One of my favourite albums ever.

Very minimal exposure to Sonic Youth beforehand. Probably better after a few listens.

I can hear how so many bands were influenced by the raw, stripped-down sound of Sonic Youth... because to me the band didn't sound like much at all. Everything that came after built upon the blank slate template this band put out with Daydream Nation. Honestly, once I stopped paying strict attention to listening to the album, it was over in a flash. Mostly because all of the songs sounded pretty much the same to me.

Is this the nest Sonic Youth album ever? Well I haven't heard them all but I think, front to back I prefer both Sister and Goo, but neither of those albums have Teenage Riot nor Total Trash. 4.5 stars

Good music to really groove to. Perhaps a little edgy, but I like it.

I expected to like this, but maybe just not in the right mood for it.

Sonic Youth's fifth album is an alternative rock double album containing quite a few long songs. It is highly acclaimed, being considered the band's best album, and also was probably the inspiration for future alternative, punk, and indie rock music in the 90's. This is the perfect example of an American rock band from the 80's, but unfortunately the album did not perform well on the charts at release. I loved the album and recommend it to any fans of rock, especially alternative or indie.

Quite heavy on the distortion, would like a little respite every now and then. Anger seems to bleed into the performance, sending decently composed tracks into bustops full of nuns.

Disappointing. I was expecting more than a high school battle of the bands, but I suppose I can hear how they've influenced later bands.

It was as interesting to read about this album's background as it was to listen to it. I had heard of the group before, probably heard a song or two in passing, but never spent any time listening to them. I expected more chaos and screaming, and there is some of that, but not as random-sounding as I thought it would be. Yet another reminder that I have a lot of work to do on removing biases, prejudices, and expectations. Let the music play, as it were. I found the tracks full of well-crafted melody and harmony, they all play fantastically well, and in most songs, I was drawn in quite nicely. Definitely has some punk elements and influences, but there are layers and textures beyond those normally heard in that area. The Wikipedia article says they were known for their improvisations in live performances, and Henry Rollins encouraged them to reflect that in their studio work. Good suggestion. They've got the chops to pull it off really well. Love some of the extended jams they include in some of the tracks. I need to spend more time on this one. I want to get into the lyrics more. Lots of sci-fi and other references, and they even have a song that pays homage both to the tune "Hey Joe" and Joni Mitchell. Hecks, YES. Great album, and I love that it's outside what I normally listen to. It's more...maybe "intense" is the right word? Something like that. Good healthy process here in this project. Love it.

Daydream Nation is the best album of noise rock legends Sonic Youth, though it's not my favorite (Sister). "Schizophrenia" and "(I Got A) Catholic Block" are classic rock songs and the other tracks are great too.

Great early grunge sounds supported by solid music throughout but I’m a sucker for vocals and both male/female leads are lacking. Great instrumentals, good variety of sounds, decent garage band lyrics.

This album is alright, I guess average. It doesn't sound bad, I just feel like most of the songs sound similar and it goes on for 70 minutes.

Great New York punk, I can hear Blondie, Talking heads , Television and Richard Hell in this album but the best of them.

An album of great bits, spread a bit too thinly. No doubt important in indie rock but just short of being great for me.

I like to call this genre "sustain guitar depressed teenager music". The album "Peripheral Vision" by Turnover is another honorable case. Anyways: Not my case, this album.

There were some moments and sounds that I really liked or appreciated (not always the same thing). Sometimes a jarring sound can make you think, "Wow! That's interesting!" but then when it repeats over and over and goes on and on it just can get hard to bear. The songs with Kim Gordon's vocals were much more interesting to me than Thurston Moore's. By the time I got to his monotone "Rain King" (or as I would later see Wikipedia refer to it, "the rarely played 'Rain King'" yay!) with its shrill background I wanted to rip off my ears. I think there are days that a bit of Sonic Youth would be just the thing. There were a couple moments where the music matched my inner negative energy and I got it. But an over hour-long double album of constant dissonance wasn't doing it for me today.

I think of Sonic Youth as a band that the kool kids were into. I get it, there is a lot of fun in the driving tempos and guitar work. I found myself enjoying quite a bit of the album…but not all of it. Perhaps it is my lack of youth, but the extended instrumental breaks and noise solos were a turn off for me.

This is a band that I've seen on other people's T-shirts but I've never really listened to. And now I've listened to them. It's not at all that I disliked them. Not at all. But I can't really say that I liked them either. The music is fine but didn't make me feel a lot of feelings: good, bad, or otherwise. The instruments are standard rock band. Songs are melodious but not really pretty. A lot of the singing is more like pitched talking or yelling. And again I'm not saying this is bad, just not for me. Here are the songs that I appreciated: Teen Age Riot, 'Cross the Breeze, Eric's Trip, and Total Trash.

I enjoyed listening to DAYDREAM NATION for the most part. The album combines punk with some catchy pop melodies and a lot of instrumental experimentation. The experimentation sometimes come off great, but there are a number of places where the songs and experiments go on a little too long. Still I did like a lot of the music. Some of the standouts for me were: "Teen Age Riot" - loved the opening and it is catchy "The Sprawl" - especially the ending "Total Trash" - except the ending (experimenting was a little too long) "Candle" - pretty good with some catchy lyrics "B) Hyperstation" - this one is interesting and I think at times would not be among my favorites (along with the other two in the trilogy at the end) -bordering on too much - but I appreciated the odd tunings, lyrics, and crazy sounds they were getting out of their instruments At times I found myself wishing that the distorted, fuzzy guitars were cleaner and let the melodies shine through a bit more. I found the listening experience better on higher-quality headphones than on speakers. The fuzzy guitars came out better and I was able to distinguish more subtle bits of the music. This seemed equally true playing on quality computer monitors, home stereo or car stereo. This album is definitely ambitious and really feels like it was clearing a path for a lot of 90s music. DAYDREAM NATION likely won't become a regular listen for me. Still I very much appreciated the opportunity to make its acquaintance.

I hate Sonic Youth. GRANTED it might be the foundation for a lot of things to come, I just don't give a shit about any of the songs on this album, or the band in general.

I didn’t stop listening to it on the way there, but it wasn’t particularly noteable.

Nothing like another excuse to listen to this unparalleled collection of 80's alternative rock. I've listened to a lot of Sonic Youth, and they're really in a league of their own - their music ranges from the insanely catchy to absolutely deranged and borderline unlistenable, and I feel they found the perfect balance of the two on 'Daydream Nation'. With that said, I will caution that the first song on this album is, at least in my opinion, far and away the best song on the album, the best song Sonic Youth ever wrote, and one of my all-time favourite songs in general. The hazy dream-pop-y intro, the relentless energy and drive, Thurston's vocals - it's just a brilliant accomplishment of a track. With that said, it's worth sticking around - you get a lot more of the band's tendency towards the more experimental later on in the album - distortion-heavy breakdowns and weird tunings are evident on such tracks as 'Total Trash' and 'Rain King', but at the end of the day, each of these tracks is enjoyable in its own way.

Great 5th Sonic Youth's album. 1988. Alternative rock with noisy sound and a lot of improvisation experiments. I'm a bit tired of listening 70 min of jams (although I like to listen long and conceptual records). So 4/5 stars this time. But I enjoyed it and will listen again.

Possibly the greatest album of the 1980s. This sprawling record is expansive, unsettling, ponderous, noisy, and driving. Sonic Youth. This album has had an immeasurable influence on grunge, indie, DIY, etc. which continues to this day.

So…I gave it 2** initially, which is wrong. But is it a 4****? Maybe not yet for me, could do with more hooks. But interesting and I will listen again.

Unique vocals, distorted shoegaze tones and artistically liberated cover art. Surprising it was released 1988, as it sounds strikingly similar to something that would be recently dropped from the genre. Sonic Youth was ahead of the game.

I can totally see why people would enjoy this (I might well have done so myself back when it was released) but it's not for me, I'm afraid.

This is a pretty good album, but seems a little overlong at 70 minutes. There's probably a pretty mind-blowing 45 minute album in here that gets a little bogged down with some filler.

I know this band a bit but never listened to an album. I get that some will say it's noise. I agree it's noise but I like it anyway.  Teen Age Riot kicks off the festivities in style and is as close as they  get to a song that people without a deranged taste in music might like. Total Trash  isn't in that user friendly zone. It's noise but it's meant to be noise. They are playing fucked up sounding guitars on purpose to create "noise art". One minute I get it and the next minute I say "C'mon".  It comes so close to going over the edge and landing in a cesspool of noise that can't be listened to  but, imo, it doesn't go over that edge.  I realize 70 minutes is a lot of any band in one sitting. I surprisingly didn't do my first "K - how much is left?" time check until midway through the trilogy.  . . . and I'm 60 for christ's sake. Full transparency: I tapped out 30 secs into when Eliminator Jr.  I like these guys and wish I had listened to their albums years ago.

So, this is our first of 5 Sonic Youth albums! This one reminds me a bit – believe it or not – of Hawkwind, the way they lay down a riff and stay with it for a long time – though Hawkwind had a crisper guitar sound. Lots of dark energy and good lyrics. The lead singer(s) sound at times like Lou Reed and/or Iggy Pop. I would give it a higher mark without the long-drawn-out guitar feedback endings, though I know that’s is their shtick.

Prog post-punk, heavy shoegaze. I’ve had Teenage riot on heavy rotation for years because I just cant get enough of Thurston Moore’s scintillating guitar shredding. The rest of the album is very solid as well if you’re in the mood for some NOIZE!

Unexpected grower. The first 3 or 4 tracks are pretty uninspiring but I just seemed to tune into it over time and by the end was enamoured. Interesting to hear bits that clearly inspired other bands. A like rather than a love but a definite moment in time.

Why so much random guitar distortion? Why the voices so far away? Sounds like a demo or live recording. Not really my thing I guess.

Some of these songs are pretty fun, until they remember that distortion is an option halfway through the song and just... do that all the time? Can't honestly say that I enjoyed this, but I'll give it 2 stars just for the few songs that aren't distorted to death.

Moments of greatness, moments of droning that is grating to my ears.

I have a couple sonic youth CDs, bought used well after they were in their prime. I've listened to them here and there but nothing has ever grabbed me. I think this record is consistent with that. This is a band that people assume I love because I'm in FAWNN. Not true. But there are moments. I see this record was made in 1988. That's impressive and refreshing. In the context of all the shit rock music being made in 1988, I'm thankful.

If you're going to be a punk band, keep your songs in the 2-4 minute range. There's no need to "explore" these songs and drag them out to 7-8 minutes. Having said that, the ones the fell around 3 minutes, I actually enjoyed. Hey Joni, Candle, Kissability - pretty good stuff. The other songs were mostly great punk songs, just broken up with a bunch of unnecessary nonsense. I can definitely hear how they influenced 90s punk/rock though - I'll give them that.

Couldn't find much to enjoy.

I've already had Sonic Youth Goo come up earlier, so my reaction to this is similar. I'm not wild about "noise rock", but I see the influence on bands that came later. I like Goo better than this album, but just barely. 3.2/5

Great to listen to for historical reasons but I'd probably need some more time with it to fully appreciate the musicianship. Don't fret, I'm as dissapointed as anyone given how much I was looking forward to listening to this album.

No sé si vaya a salir el album Goo, por un lado es el que se me hace mejor disco de Sonic Youth, por otro en mi opinión 3 discos en la lista serían demasiado (a pesar de que personalmente me gusten mucho). A diferencia del disco anterior aquí ya se sienten con más forma, a pesar de todavía tener mucho noise rock ya hay canciones mucho más formadas y melódicas y se sienten como una banda aun más afianzada. Lo que quizá me llama más la atención es la cantidad de influencia que se nota en este disco y se verá reflejada en estilos más adelante dentro del indie rock, screamo y bastantes más. Quizá aquí es donde entra el pero que sí siento que se le puede poner al disco y que creo es similar al anterior que nos tocó de ellos. Es un disco que todavía tiene bastante ruido; un ruido meticulosamente creado, variado y con sentido pero que resulta en un album que no puedes realmente solo poner de fondo y disfrutar poniendo atención a medias. Es un disco que te demanda atención, que si le das chance y te encuentras ese tiempo para ponerlo y dejarte embeber y llevar a la "zona" simplemente hace clic y te lleva a un viaje muy interesante. Quizá es un conjunto de sinapsis que cada quién tiene relacionadas con ciertos estilos musicales, pero en mi caso este disco hace ese clic mencionado y simplemente funciona; estoy seguro que habrá muchos que no importa cuanto lo escucharan incluso intentando centrar su atención les seguiría sonando a un sonido indistinto como si estuvieran en un centro comercial atiborrado. A lo que va esto es que aunque me gusta tanto el disco tampoco puedo dar una recomendación completa en carta blanca a cualquiera; es un disco melindroso y bastante largo, pero que a quien le compagine le va a encantar.

De lo muy poco que conozco de Sonic Youth, este de me ha hecho el mejor disco. Pese a que sigue siendo música un poco difícil para mí y además es un disco particularmente largo, se pueden notar mucho más las habilidades de composición, uso de voces y arreglos que en los discos más cargados al noise.

All the things I like about Sonic Youth are here, but then there's sort of twice as much as I actually want? I love any band that can make noise entertaining and Sonic Youth has given me some of the best noise I've ever heard. Still, this one does go on a bit.

If I’m being completely honest I don’t think I’ve ever been cool enough to entirely get this band. But I’ve always admired them and I can live with that. Really liked that “candle” song!

I've not really listened to much Sonic Youth, and always felt vaguely guilty about that hole in my listening. This was great! A noisier, harsher Pavement (or rather, Pavement are a quieter, gentler Sonic Youth). I can definitely see myself bumping this up to 5 stars with more familiarity... Fave track - "Trilogy", for sprawling grandeur. "Teen Age Riot" is a tune, too....

De eerste minuut van dit album is zo wazig dat je bijna geen zin meer hebt om verder te luisteren. Gelukkig komt er daarna verandering en hebben we (een beetje trage) punkrock met een poppie zanglijn. Het tempo gaat snel omhoog bij het eerstvolgende nummer, maar de zanglijn maakt plaats voor een wat meer typische Engelse punkstem; En dat voor een Amerikaanse band, haha. De interesse is nu wel gewekt. Vooral als er ook een vrouwelijke stem ten tonele verschijnt. Het album is verder toch niet heel bijzonder en blijft een beetje op een bepaald niveau hangen. Uiteindelijk is het eerste nummer "Teen Age Riot nog het leukst. **

Leuk album. Lekker voor in de auto of op een festival.

Het album begint voor mij best goed, maar wordt gaandeweg de rit steeds minder interessant voor mij. Ik denk dat dit komt omdat de sound steeds ‘rommeliger’ en meer kenmerken van punk vertonen. Jammer. Het eerste kwart van het album 3/5, daarna 1/5.

Stevig gitaarwerk, lange instrumentale stukken, veel variatie in tempo. Goed album!

Non ho mai sentito un album dei Sonic Youth per intero, questa era la prima volta. Non mi sono dispiaciuti, ma è come se le mie orecchie siano un po' sature quando si tratta di queste cose. Forse sto invecchiando e sono stanco. Il sound è comunque molto familiare perché indubbiamente hanno influenzato molti gruppi negli anni a venire. Molti dei quali tra i miei preferiti. Love it. It has a jam like feel to it. A diverse range of guitar tones, and dissonant chords, creating a sense of urgency and tension, interspersed with small sections of release. A genuine sense of frustration in the vocals, perfectly carried by the band

It ebbs and flows from high energy to a more calm trance like rock. Heavy experimentation occurs throughout. This is a very good album.

Having heard the name Sonic Youth before, I expected a lot of dissonant jangly noise, and it IS that, but weirdly, I like it? I like it a lot. I think this would fall under the genre “Shoegaze”, but it’s vastly more enjoyable to my ear than Dinosaur Jr. I will probably add this to my regular rota.

I can see why people like this, but I am not those people. Maybe I’m old now but this is definitely the “noise” and “racket” that people have been complaining about through the years. The first song had a mini song in it that I liked. I truly didn’t hate the album but I didn’t like it. Giving it two stars because at this point I’m pretty confused about ratings if I’m being honest.

Uninspiring and frankly boring. Heard of this band but luckily I never listened before and I won't again. Kind of like deep sea fishing. Only need one go to know it's not for you. And I appreciate that.

Never cared for Sonic Youth. Not even in my youth.

They're a band who's reputation is entirely build on other musicians saying they're great. But it largely sounds like uncrafted noise... and I guess there's something to be said for that. Regardless, this will be my first and last listen.

In conclusione: Qua sono in seria difficoltà. I Sonic Youth sono praticamente i padri spirituali dell'80% dei gruppi che amo e infatti quando iniziano a fare quei riffetti di chitarra zozzi e disperati io mi sciolgo come se avessi di nuovo sedici anni. Però non è un album di facile ascolto, anzi ho fatto sicuramente fatica, i pezzi come struttura mi sembrano molto "abletoniani": sequenze ripetute per più tempo del dovuto. Però questo gli dà anche quella qualità ipnotica. Il vero punto su cui sono in difficoltà però è il fatto che lo spirito punk mi fa arrivare in modo diverso anche la struttura strascinata. Cioè non è del tipo "non siappiamo scrive" è del tipo "non ce ne frega niente di scrivere secondo i canoni e non ce ne frega niente che a te non te piace", cioè la pesantezza è parte del messaggio artistico, è una pesantezza spontanea e quindi anche comunicativa. Detto questo molti pezzi suonano un po' troppo come uno sfogo personale, per quanto sincero, piuttosto che un genuino tentativo di comunicare. Mi sa che mi vedo costretto a dare un 3 anche se moralmente sarebbe un 4.

Musicalmente è un disco che mi piace moltissimo, non connetto completamente con il cantato maschile ma è l’unico problema.

Good for a listen through. Loved the energy, at least in the music. Although many of the songs were indistinguishable. Vocals were generally lazy or spoken which kinda killed the vibe for me. Also could have done without the longer tracks that devolved into distortion and screeching etc.

Can see how it's contributed to the evolution of punk. Punk sounds and beats but much mellower, more melodic. Almost a bit Preoccupations - ish. Enjoyed it but didn't quite feel enough for a 4. 3/5

The perfect album when what you’re seeking is a bit of a jangly, hectic mix of fuzz and discordant melody.

Every tune sounds almost identical to the one before it. Not necessarily a bad thing but it means nothing stands out...

I can definitely see why this album is on those list even if I didn’t love every song on it. There’s a lot of interesting stuff that I will definitely come back to. Total Trash descends into madness and I love it. There’s a lot of muddy noisy stuff but there are also some nice riffs like the riff on Candle and I enjoy most of it. I did find some of the album forgettable and some of the vocals to be a bit annoying at times (like on Z) Eliminator, Jr.). Overall an enjoyable listen. Favorite songs: Teen Age Riot, Total Trash, Candle, Rain King, Kissability, B) Hyperstation Least favorite songs: The Sprawl, Z) Eliminator, Jr. Decent 8/10

Teenage Riot and Silver Rocket are such good songs and the only 2 I know on this album, but wasn't expecting the rest to be so compelling. It is noisy as expected, but also melodic. Like it. Love those surprise little outros on songs - such an adventure

Love the guitar through most of this album. Lyrics and vocals are average and tend to break my focus when they take center stage on the song. Caught myself thinking this part sounds like XYZ band a couple times, which I realized it was actually just that band sounding like Sonic Youth which was a cool realization.

This is definitely a familiar album for me. My brother introduced me to the more experimental sounds of Sonic Youth in high school and it has paved the way for my love of indie rock which is where I dwell most often.

First album I didn't make it through to the end. Not because of time constraints either....

I’m familiar with Sonic Youth - primarily the “Dirty” album which I listened to frequently back in the 90s. I like this album - it has a solid sense of urgency - that feeling of REALLY needing to catch that flight, but for some reason there are 300+ kids in band uniforms already in the security line at the airport. Overall recording quality seems kind of muddy, and the album grated on my nerves at times. I like it / I hate it - might have been what they were going for. Favorite track = Rain King. I will listen to Sonic Youth again, but Daydream Nation won’t be my first choice.

Not massively taken by this but liked the energy and interesting song structures.

Great in places, but not the whole album

Like nearly all SY albums Ive listened to, it just does nothing to me. I wish I liked them, I really do. Feels like the first run through of ideas and not tightened up or built on.

Heavy,gloomy guitar based music, not something I would seek out but glad I listened to it. Interest guitars that remind me of some of Radiohead/smashing pumpkins used in later albums.

One of those albums that I'm supposed to like (a man of such discerning musical taste!) but have never got into. Some decent tracks but the amount of reverb always gives the feel of style over substance, but its interesting enough to keep my attention. Never been that keen on the vocal on some of the tracks. Having said that a solid and probably quite influential album. Highlights: Teenage Riot, Hey Joni, Kissability

Cool vibe

I find Sonic youth hard to love if I am honest

Came into this album thinking Sonic Youth was a pretentious band. Came out of listening to this album thinking they are a pretentious band that is also very good. I watched the documentary, 1991: The Year Punk Broke, about Sonic Youth and other bands of that era after listening to this, and boy is Thurston Moore a dickhead. Also, I read they would bring upwards of 50 guitars to a gig because of all the funky tuning and modifications they would do. I mean I'm all for experimentation but give me a break. Roasting aside, I did really like this album. The songwriting seemed strong throughout and I read that some of it was inspired by The Neuromancer, which I'm currently reading, so that got me geeked. The most impressive thing to me though was the guitar on this album! It shred of course, and even the droning noise rock bits on the outros of a lot of tracks felt interesting to me and not too overindulgent. As eye roll as it may be, the modifications to the actual hardware of the guitars and alternative playing styles made for some really interesting sounds. A sound that seems to have been a blueprint for so so many indie bands in the 2000s and 2010s, which made this seem a little less fresh to me than I'm sure it was at the time. I really liked "Teenage Riot," but I think I liked the Kim Gordon songs more because again, too cool, disinterested sounding indie white guy has been beat to death. I do think Sonic Youth contributed a lot to modern rock sensibilities and I can see myself exploring their discography further.

Hatte immer ein wenig Angst vor der SPEX wie auch vor Sonic Youth, dieser vatikanischen Obrigkeit in Sachen Alternative Rock. Zu lange den Bogen gemacht um diese Ikonen und sie nur nebenher wahrgenommen; peripher rangemacht mittels Dekonsruktion dessen, was ich auf der eigenen Suche nach spannender Musik immer als Inspiration genannt bekam und nun teilweise erkennen kann (die Field Recording Ästhetik „Providence“ wird ein Jahrzehnt später ein GY!BE Markenzeichen). Ihr Noise Gewand durchwirkt ein klarer Popfaden. Ich vermute, es gibt sperrigeres Material, aber „Daydream Nation“ will bei allem Gezerre und Gezeter schon sehr gefallen. Ein durchaus erstaunlicher Spagat, aber so viel Ehrfurcht früher herrschte, so wenig Begeisterung kommt nun auf. Wovor man sich als Kind fürchtete, provoziert heut nur ein nachsichtiges Lächeln Furchtlose 3.0

Merke, wie wenig ich mich mit dem Gesamtwerk von Sonic Youth auskenne. Wirklich gehört habe ich eigentlich nur die hier, Goo und Dirty. Und würde sie im persönlich Ranking umgekehrt platzieren. Hier gefällt mir (natürlich) Eric‘s Trip am besten, The Sprawl am wenigsten. Weitere Ausführungen spare ich mir für die (hoffentlich kommende) nächste Runde Sonic Youth. Vielleicht bin ich dann noch mehr Fan! 3,4.

Love sonic youth haven't listened in a while was cool to hear again. Kim songs are a coin flip for me. Record holds up.

This classic guitar-grinding, beat-driving, angst-spilling, iron-pumping album is not for the faint of heart or ear! It always gets under my skin and triggers fist pumps of rebellion and release!

Ok album

Love the female/male vocal interplay. minimalist fuzz. Birth of shoegaze. saw them play this album all the way through in Oakland. Twas excellent! Punk of Silver Rocket makes me want to jump! Libertines got a lot of influence from this.

El sonido estaba ahí antes de la explosión del grunge. Les faltaba tal vez una visión más comercial, canciones más cortas por ejemplo. Creo que como artistas les daba igual. Se deja escuchar pero no creo que sea algo para tener en bucle.

Wasn’t struck by the start of this album, but the back half really stood out! I think this suffers from a bit of ‘I’ve heard so many bands try to imitate this sound that hearing this now feels watered down’? Trying to combat that, I really like the shifting vibes and and vocalists and definitely want to give this album more time and more rotations!

This was okay. Second album by Sonic Youth which is a bit disappointing. I guess there are a number of artist repeats on here which is surprising to me given over a hundred years of the world's music but whatever. It was about the same imo as the last one.

It's been a while since I've listened to this and I found I liked it better than Goo this time around.

Oof. Not really a fan. I mean as with most of these albums I could see why it’s important, I see where it influenced a lot of artists after it. It feels like Foo Fighters ripped them off a bit on one of their better tracks. Maybe that Catfish and the Bottlemen song I like too. But most of this album sounded like noise with extra steps.

Pretty good. Not a huge fan of the dissonant/noise stuff but I do appreciate some of their music.

"Teenage Riot" is an all-time favorite of mine. Great start to the album but the 2nd half is leaves something to be desired.

Amazing album. Want to dig in to more of their catalog now.

Liking the straight-ahead indie punk thing they do. "The Sprawl" made me think of Parquet Courts, esp that talk-singy thing at the beginning. Started to get long and repetitive about halfway through. Getting worn down by the consistently dire vibe. Really starting to hate it toward the end - if it ended 5 songs ago I might have rated higher.

Not really my thing, but there are some fun songs and interesting sounds in here. They definitely have a different sound which is somewhere between alt rock and punk.
