Reviews (page 9 of 10)
I did not like it
Couple good tracks, but too much noise and not enough solid tracks.
It’s too noisy for me 😳
NO!!!
I recognize some influences from this in music that I like. But I did not like this album. I tried (and its duration gives you plenty of time to try!), but I just didn’t like it.
Meh. There's a few moments of cool guitar, but only a few. Had a hard time listening to this album.
IIRC Red Book audio spec is 72 minutes for a Compact Disc. They nearly filled a compact disc with 70 minutes of mediocre music. That's the best thing I can say.
Made me anxious. Wanted to turn it down so it didn't irritate people at work.
Not my cup of tea
Maybe it was cool for 1988, sounds pretty experimental and noisy, lots of effects for some reason. Not really enjoyable, no notable tracks.
Couldnt listen to the whole thing, I didnt like it at all
It was fine background music. 2/5
Sexless art school vomit. 3-0-1
Snooze fest tbh
I think it might be a good album, but i don't think is the greatest of all. It has cool songs in it.
Gave me a headache haha
never really my cup of tea- not bad just not my thing
Left me unimpressed. 2/5
Ok some noisy noisy noise Really not my thing, like I can hear the influence on later artists and some of the songs are good! Its really interesting and I know they really pioneered a lot of the elements that later grunge groups ended up adapting but I think those reformulations were a little more palatable for me. Maybe some of their later stuff where they are experimenting a little less would be more my thing!
Not for me. I skipped a few songs... 2/5
Not much to say about this album. Just not a fan.
It's just a conversation with some guitars and drums in the background. There's little singing, and when there is singing, it's kinda okay. Also, why is a song almost eight minutes long when the lyrics end before the three-minute mark? I get having some music after the lyrics end, but FIVE WHOLE MINUTES is wayyyy too much.
Eh didn’t wow me
Everyone who likes this liked it first when they were 16. Pure nostalgia bait. I am not one of those people. Sonic youth? Grow up.
I want to like it more than I do. I'm too old and not cool.
Meh. Listened to it, not offensive or unpleasant, just did nothing for me
fine
Not as good as the their other album Sister but ok
Nr. 40/1001 Teen Age Riot 3/5 Silver Rocket 2/5 The Sprawl 3/5 'Cross The Breeze 3/5 Eric's Trip 3/5 Total Trash 2/5 Hey Joni 3/5 Providence - 1/5 Candle 3/5 Rain King 2/5 Kissability 2/5 A) the Wonder 1/5 B) Hyperstation 2/5 Z) Eliminator, Jr. 1/5 Average: 2,07 Didn't like the vocal or musical performances. Felt really pretentious.
1.83 per track. Did not like at all but I can see how it influenced other music that I don't like too.
I just don't know. It seems like an influential album and various people in our group have strong feelings about it. The overall sound is fine and it does seem to be well ahead of its time for 1988. But after a couple of listens I'm just not hooked by any songs. I guess I'm glad Sonic Youth influenced other bands to make music I actually like?
A few tracks that are quite interesting and enjoyable ("'Cross the Breeze" being a real standout) - but overall, I feel the album has a lot of forgettable songs which makes it feel like it goes on for far too long. If they cut some of the weaker songs, i think i'd put this album at a 3.5
Nervig, nicht min Ding
Not for me
groovy, very nice, loved it, especially mother nature
This is my second Sonic Youth album in a week and I’m not that impressed. I came around to Goo in the end but Daydream Nation does not do it for me. I just don’t think I get Sonic Youth.
No me ha entantado, no me ha dicho nada. No es mi estilo.
I don't understand it. For now, it gets a placeholder grade of five, but I'll have to delve into the lyrics more when I have the time. There's definitely some unique guitar sounds though. Reminds me of Lou Reed "speaking" on I'm Waiting For The Man.
Meh. Didn't love it or hate it.
Couldn’t get into it. Will try again in future.
Boring, to me.
Not really my thing
This was just noises to me.
Just not my taste.
I don't like this one. The sounds are interesting, but not something I'd want to keep listening to.
Noisy shit
Took me a while to get through this one
not my cup of tea ..
Ok, again, I liked half. I had to give up about an hour in, the Amazon version of this album is 2 hours long and about an hour in is where it became a lot of noise. I do see how select tracks influenced future artists.
I liked this one more than the first Sonic Youth album. It still wasn't great, and I'll probably never listen to it again, but I don't remember hating any of these songs, and some of them were...hmm. I think I'm trying to find a way to justify giving this a 3 just because I liked it more than the last one, but it's hard to do that when my overall reaction was "it wasn't bad" vs. "at least some of them were good." It was fine. Let's pretend this is a 2.5.
Mostly similar thoughts as with EVOL. I listened to a lot of alternative rock on Columbus radio in the 90s. I imagine I heard some of their songs on it, but found them forgettable, and forgot them, as I will forget this.
OK, fourth song in - I think I'll throw the towel in on this one
Coolt men hade behövts klippas ner. Favorit låtar: Rock You och Thoughts @ Work
Like sonic youth but this one is not their best
Another Sonic Youth album. It just sounds all the same to me.
JUMALAUTA! YLLÄPITO!!! KIITOS...KIITOS... ROCK-INDIE -TYYPPINEN ALBUMI... VIHDOIN..VIHDOIN.. JA TÄMÄ ALBUMI HEH, HEH INFLUENTIAALINEN TÄMÄN TYYPPISELLE, YKSI ENSIMMÄISISTÄ TÄMÄ... LOVE IT...ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT...heh ja leikki seis... paskaa musiikkia heh... the sprawl
Surprisingly, this was my least favorite of the Sonic Youth albums that I’ve listened to so far (the others were Goo and Sister). I guess I didn’t dislike it, but it didn’t leave an impression at all.
guitar and indie rock sound are solid, clearly see why they were influential. but songs are almost too long to be enjoyable and singing is pretty rough
Total trash 2
Sonic Youth are soooo cool. Coolness is overrated. They're so cool they didn't even bother finishing the songs on this album. It's not terrible, but it's terribly half arsed
Best Song: Eliminator Jr. A high energy punk track, far better than the rest. Worst Song: Total Trash. Nominative determinism. Over 7 minutes of guitars caterwauling. Overall: Boy am I glad that's over. Everything - from the songwriting down to the production - has this sleepy, muffled quality to it. It felt like a head cold and too much codeine. None of the songs really stood out from any of the others, just one endless drone.
Didn’t love it. The album spurns attention, there is nothing catchy to hold on to, it just drones on until it is done. I almost forgot I had it on.
Reminds me of Joy Division
Goddamn boring. And their singing skill are just amazingly low. But it gets 2 just for paving roots for alternative scene
its ok. probably wouldn't listen to the whole album again
I just didn't like it, really thought i would.
Sounds a bit too monotone sometimes
Not for me
Rock alternativo. Incómodo de escuchar.
Feb 6: Maggie gets this album and we start to listen together. She turns it off almost immediately and leaves 1 star rating "It stressed me out." I say I'd have enjoyed it on my own. April 6: I get this album and it doesn't hit. I wait to be in a better mood and leave it unrated. May 16: Maggie shows me Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore's collaboration with Bernie Sanders. This makes me want to like Sonic Youth even more. +1 stars for this June 1: Accepting defeat. It stressed me out
I found it a little noisy. Can definitely hear the influence on other bands though.
This one made me wonder what these bands did to be on here? Maybe they were the first with this sound and I’ve only heard copies and that’s all I know.
old rock, bof
Noooot into ittttt
I tried to like it but the lyrics and vocals were too much to overcome. The music was at best droning
Not for me
Too punk for me. All I hear is noise.
Had a sonic youth album on this the other day and really liked it. This was a bit of a dud however They’ve upped the noise and lost the songs
27th February 2023 Listened while on the way to and from Showcase. Finished while sorting recycling etc when home in the evening. Long day. Difficult because there were the softer tunes here that I enjoyed, but the more experimental punk I couldn’t get in with again with Sonic Youth.
repetitive in 90s, repetitive now
Not really my jam. Kind of hard punk Brit rock towards the end
My experience with Sonic Youth before listening to this was that I liked a bunch of their songs, but that the majority of their work was unrelenting shoegazey noise. I had some hopes after the first track 'Teen Age Riot' - It's got a real groove and energy to it. The rest of the album doesn't hold up to it though. There's a lot of general meandering and extended takes. I do like a bit of distorted guitar and shoegaze at times, but it gets more and more oppressive the longer it goes on, and this is a long album. I end up feeling completely drained by the end of it.
Bland, uninteresting but inoffensive.
I don't really like much of Sonic Youth's music. I have liked about a third of Goo, but almost nothing on Sister or Daydream Nation (just teenage riot and candle really). Whilst it's good to hear a lot of guitar, I find the general lack of structure and cohesion difficult. Accomplished as they are, it just doesn't appeal. I'm tempted to call Emperor's New Clothes on all the muso critics, but I do think Thurston, Lee and Kim (and drummer... sorry...) are capable musicians and trying to be unconventional in a post punk hardcore manner.
First impression this morning upon just seeing the name "Sonic Youth" was something bordering between anger and frustration. But fk it - we'll give it a shot - even though I am (was) petulantly expecting noisy low-fi awful vocal indie trash... .... a curious thing though.... this first song "Teen Age Riot" is way way different than my expectations. It's more polished than I'd feared - it's a bit more structured - the vocals aren't (yet?) completely annoying... ehh but then here comes "Silver Rocket" and I just don't get the appeal. It's far from the worst thing I've heard but it's sloppy and while there are bits that I can see were honed and perfected by bands like Smashing Pumpkins for example, this is a lot of what I'd feared - noisy, tempo swaying, and not really catchy or dramatic - if you're going for pure energy as the overwhelmingly prominent feature in your music then you'll probably feel the exact opposite of me in terms of enjoying music. Double album and i'm on song 2. Sigh. This is gonna be a long morning. Ehhh to save myself the trouble of live-blogging this ("The Sprawl" - it's the vocals, ugh, it's just not appealing let alone good) let's sum this up after the hour of discontent...: So many of these songs just devolve into nothingness - not only am I not against experimentation, I think it's important to branch out - but branching out isn't 4-5 minutes of two chords back and forth and 3 guitars meandering aimlessly over the top. That's just a mess. Would have been nice if a strong producer would just yell at them to clean up your rooms and come out in a day and let's see what you have. Because many (most?) of these songs start out pretty nicely - it's just they can't cross the finish line. "Candle" is alright (minus the vocals yeah yeah) - some really progressive and interesting twists and turns that again, I can definitely hear in bands that were to immediately follow. Overall dammit - there is some occasional intrigue here which almost makes it more frustrating - I like a fair amount of the unique guitar playing (e.g. "Hey Joni" uses some good aggressive rhythmic playing; muted chords, harmonics) that actually are reflected in a number of early 90s bands I like infinitely more. So perhaps some credit is due here. It's just ... the songs, man. Sum: This album is like a relay team with a good runner off the blocks and then handing off to a bunch of guys in potato sacks carrying giant bags of ketchup. It's a goddamn mess that could have used better coaching. 3/10 2 stars.
Great album
egregiously overrated
Heavy, sprawling and distorted. Sonic Youth may a band that are easier to respect than to enjoy. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Teen Age Riot Date listened: 06/01/23
Poor recording quality and noisy guitar fills make this uninspiring at best. Not sure what’s so special about this album. I think the name “Sonic Youth” gives this band and their work an extra push into credibility.
This will be the second Sonic Youth album I’ve listened to after Dirty. I wouldn’t consider myself to be a fan of Sonic Youth - my experience so far has been some decent songs, and some dull/annoying songs. Let’s find out how this one ranks! Songs I already knew: None Favourites: Teen Age Riot, Kissability This album started pretty strong, and it had me thinking I’d prefer this over Dirty. However, after only a couple of songs things went downhill pretty quickly. I’d find very few songs hooking me, to the point where 3-4 songs could pass and I wouldn’t even particularly realise. Certainly, even straight after a song had finished, I wouldn’t be able to tell you how it went. I think this kind of music (noise rock) just doesn’t click with my brain. Overall, I didn’t particularly enjoy this album. I can appreciate parts of the music, but overall it just wasn’t enjoyable for me.
Nothing too exciting here - lots of these now feel like filler rather than seminal
2. Kinda neat and experimental, but not much else going for it.
It surprises me every time when I find out that Sonic Youth was around in the 80s. I literally cannot name a Sonic Youth song off the top of my head but I always think they were part of the grunge/punk movement of the early 90s. Anyways this album is entirely to long. All the songs definitely could have be shortened significantly. The music itself was alright if you remove all of the distortion. I am not listening to it again.
Did not really enjoy
Oh dear... it's a no from me, I just don't get it!! I find it way too chaotic and noisy to get the point of the lyrics which do seem really cool when I read into it a bit. It's just stressful to me. Having said that, I can see how influential they are and specifically listening to this album. They just influenced a lot of music I also don't enjoy... I can also appreciate the musicianship, with creative tuning, insane guitar playing and distortion, and also the creative genius behind the noise. Unfortunately, although I appreciate the "fuck you" passion and the artistry, it's too noisy for me.
After listening to this and "Dirty" in the last few weeks, I've come to the conclusion that I'm not a Sonic Youth fan.
Much too rambly for me
Well, it's a bit too much noise for me. 2
noise rock has to be special for it to do anything for me 3/10
not enough vocals or dynamics. Songs felt kind of boring and I only got half way through the album before giving up
Too repetetive
Meh
Meh.
Vähän tylsä levy, tosin en ehkä keskittynyt ihan 100%. 2/5.
LOUD. NOISY. Not very good. 2/5
If im being honest, their sound grabbed me at first but just bcame repetitive for the remainder of the album. Will have to give it another go soon. Best: Teen Age Riot Worst: Undecided
Opener is decent, but not much for me after that.
This is frustrating because the opener, Teenage Riot, is exceptional. But the rest of the songs are buried under a bunch of unpleasant distortion and fuzz. Not looking forward to the other 4 (!) Sonic Youth albums we'll have to endure, since my understanding is that this is their most accessible.
Didn’t get much out of this. Seemed like a lot of noise.
I just… it’s like they made every production choice I wouldn’t.
Didn't enjoy this, and it was way too long.
not a very easy listen
I listened to the radio somenthing of Sonic Youth but It's not the kind of music I like.
Not that bad of an album however I don’t see myself returning to it. It was pretty good with the instrumentals. Some songs I enjoyed more without the singers. Felt like both singers weren’t that great. 5.4/10
Not a huge fan
Daydream Nation is the third album I have reviewed for this 1001 album list. There is a previous recomendation from Sonic Youth that I haven't had a chance to review yet. This review is the same as for the previous albums. Some of the music is okay, but it doesn't take long for the band to make enough noise and clatter that I dislike what they have recorded. "Cross the Breeze" starts out okay, but once the vocals come in I'm done. I do not like the vocals from Sonic Youth. "Teen Age Riot" was the one track I thought was okay. Daydream Nation isn't terrible, but I did not like this album.
Just not for me
I was not a fan of this album. The guitar riffs seemed very generic and monotone. Vocals were not exciting either. Found myself skipping a lot of the songs. I could have sworn I liked whatever other album they had on this list but this one missed the mark for me.
So many Sonic Youth albums on this list. I'm not getting it. Maybe they are really talented musicians and it takes someone who knows and understands music to get them. To me, it's just ok. I didn't hate it... actually, I think with time I could start to enjoy it. But, after one day of listening... nothing stood out. 2/5
Post-punk had been done earlier and much, much better.
Nothing special. They were a pretty good concert, however. There were a couple of songs that had a hook to them, but that's about it.
A younger me would have liked this but found the dissonance quite stressful to listen to. May be different in the right mood, but had to stop halfway through this time
Can't really finish it. Too much noise.
Sigh I tried - but very little hooks
Compared to the last Sonic Youth album I listened to, this one wasn't nearly as unbearable. There were some parts that I thought sounded pretty good, but the whole of the album was still not enjoyable. I'm glad there was less pure noise in songs and more musical sounding elements, though. Favorite track: Teen Age Riot
I wouldn't listen to this again but it was fine background music. Nothing really jumped out at me.
There is just nothing in this music that appeals to me. It is a mix of both boring and annoying in turns
I've heard worse albums but I didn't care for the constant dissonance and endless instrumentals.
I just have a hard time enjoying an album that’s half dissonance. This album was a bit more musical than E.V.O.L. but I still had a hard time getting through it.
It felt a LOT better than the first sonic youth album I listened to. However, there were still many "make it stop" moments, so I still didn't like it.
This is definitely a challenging listen. The music isn't melodic, it's stressful and the guitars sounds like they are in pain the entire time. The vocals aren't necessarily pleasant either... it's a noisy, discordant album that i can only give them credit for doing their own thing. There's something in there, but i just don't get it.
I liked the textures they put off- it feels ahead of it’s time but I didn’t really like the song structures
Seemed a bit confused to me, somewhere between rock, indie and punk. Starts off well with "Teen Age Riot" but goes down hill from there in my opinion and I started to lose interest.
A little too mellow for me
I really didn't like this very much. I'd give it a 2.5. I didn't hate it but it was so noisy and actually pretty boring for me for most of it. Probably was creative but it all blended together for me
I liked the first track Teen Age Riot, but then a lot of the album sounded similar. I hate repetition. I also hate noise and feedback and there was way too much of that (like Silver Rocket, The Sprawl, Rain King, and Total Trash - an aptly named song). Oh, and this album is long with its repetition and noise. Giving this a 2 because at least there were moments I liked (Teen Age Riot, Candle), but by the last five songs I just wanted it to end.
Overall didn't care for it. It was weird without being interesting or melodic.
Not for me
Sonic Youth's in my cooler. Get out of there!
Ok
Some good tunes but overall didn't blow me away.
Not bad. Not my thing. Distorted riffs and shrieks take away from some of their more interesting tracks.
Not a big fan, couldn't get through all of this one. I don't dislike the grungy sound, but it all ends up being a bit monotonous
Nope. Not sure how this album made the list. 53M listens on the first song and then a combined 17.3M listens for the rest of the 13 songs.
I can hear how so many bands were influenced by the raw, stripped-down sound of Sonic Youth... because to me the band didn't sound like much at all. Everything that came after built upon the blank slate template this band put out with Daydream Nation. Honestly, once I stopped paying strict attention to listening to the album, it was over in a flash. Mostly because all of the songs sounded pretty much the same to me.
“An honest and thrilling listen because of its musical tunings and anthemic songs about post-irony and confusion-as-sex.” But also boring AF.
nah
80’er punk rock, undergrund, råt
I expected to like this, but maybe just not in the right mood for it.
Sonic Youth's fifth album is an alternative rock double album containing quite a few long songs. It is highly acclaimed, being considered the band's best album, and also was probably the inspiration for future alternative, punk, and indie rock music in the 90's. This is the perfect example of an American rock band from the 80's, but unfortunately the album did not perform well on the charts at release. I loved the album and recommend it to any fans of rock, especially alternative or indie.
I did not dig it
Disappointing. I was expecting more than a high school battle of the bands, but I suppose I can hear how they've influenced later bands.
There were some moments and sounds that I really liked or appreciated (not always the same thing). Sometimes a jarring sound can make you think, "Wow! That's interesting!" but then when it repeats over and over and goes on and on it just can get hard to bear. The songs with Kim Gordon's vocals were much more interesting to me than Thurston Moore's. By the time I got to his monotone "Rain King" (or as I would later see Wikipedia refer to it, "the rarely played 'Rain King'" yay!) with its shrill background I wanted to rip off my ears. I think there are days that a bit of Sonic Youth would be just the thing. There were a couple moments where the music matched my inner negative energy and I got it. But an over hour-long double album of constant dissonance wasn't doing it for me today.
didn't really enjoy
Not for me, very noisey without much to say
Oei nee geen fan van. Stem staat me niet aan
Some of these songs are pretty fun, until they remember that distortion is an option halfway through the song and just... do that all the time? Can't honestly say that I enjoyed this, but I'll give it 2 stars just for the few songs that aren't distorted to death.
Couldn't find much to enjoy.
Ei
Jammer. Het eerste kwart van het album 3/5, daarna 1/5.
I can appreciate the experimental nature of this album, but it mostly sounds like noise to me.
Nope. Not a 1 but this is not the right music for me. It's like if punk and grudge had a kid and that kid turned out to be an asshole.
Nup
Similar to the Kinks album, some good tracks but overall, it's fine but most tracks didn't leave much of an impression Fav: Total Trash, Kissability
I can see why people like this, but I am not those people. Maybe I’m old now but this is definitely the “noise” and “racket” that people have been complaining about through the years. The first song had a mini song in it that I liked. I truly didn’t hate the album but I didn’t like it. Giving it two stars because at this point I’m pretty confused about ratings if I’m being honest.
Starts off alright, slowly descends into random noise, 5/10
Too indie for my rock.
Never cared for Sonic Youth. Not even in my youth.
Yeah, definitely not 70 minutes interesting.
Last couple of songs some what redeeming. Just not very interesting, regardless of the influence it's probably had on a lot of music I like.
Decent opener, rest is meh
Not for me
Like nearly all SY albums Ive listened to, it just does nothing to me. I wish I liked them, I really do. Feels like the first run through of ideas and not tightened up or built on.
Started promisingly enough. Reminded me of Ash in parts and I like them. Descended into noise though. A mixed bag.
Not for me
Preferred Goo over this album. They experimented a lot with discord in this one.
I liked it better than Goo. 2 out of 5
Its ok
Oof. Not really a fan. I mean as with most of these albums I could see why it’s important, I see where it influenced a lot of artists after it. It feels like Foo Fighters ripped them off a bit on one of their better tracks. Maybe that Catfish and the Bottlemen song I like too. But most of this album sounded like noise with extra steps.
Meh
Nothing special, but not offensive to the ears either. Just very forgettable hardish rock Struggled to make it to the end.
I am sorry
Not bad but way too long for the type of music they’re playing
Noise Rock is about right.
When to listen: before a bar fight. I know Sonic Youth are iconic, but they can be iconic somewhere else. The tuning stuff is cool, the artistry is cool, I’m not cool.
Found myself quite bored with this one
Olvidable
Let us all bow our heads and pray for those who played all 152 minutes of the Deluxe Edition. May we forever keep them close to our hearts.
I know at the time it was released it was considered ground breaking. I've never been a punk rock fan and this is awful
I tried. I gave up about halfway through and started skimming through the tracks very rapidly. I need melody. I need discernible instruments. This was unpleasant noise. Sorry.
Horrible, did not enjoy, anxiety provoking music
Very noisy
Don’t think I made it through a single track without skipping. The album notes talked about “long instrumental pieces” and nearly evading seemed to have a stretch where the vocalist stopped mumbling or whining, but the spaces were filled with noise not music, so instrumental seems a misnomer. Overall just what you’d expect, loud, annoying crap to make you angry.
My preference, when it comes to music, is melody, rhythm, beat, and if possible, a good story. Maybe this album has some of these elements. I wouldn't know. It was loud and discordant. Sometimes discordant works, like jazz. As far as this album is concerned, it did not work with me. I was very happy with the last song ended and I could remove it from my list.
Listened to the first three songs and...rubbish. DNF
barulho, so barulho - 1/10
Total Trash is an apt description.
Stopped listening halfway through. Repetitive and noisy.
Eliminator, Jr. Is the worst song I've heard I think. Why is this on this site? 1001 albums you must listen to???????????? THIS? Rating 1/5
Mostly screeching noise but once in a while there’s something I like
gremlin type beat
dnf
I always thought Sonic Youth was a flash in the pan group. I had no idea they were so influential in the music scene and after listening to this album, I'm not sure why other people thought they were. I just decided that there was something that I was missing as once I heard this album, I decided that I can go the whole rest of my life without hearing another from them.
Booooooooriiiiiiiing. Même pas écouté en entier. Marre des albums de rock prog.
Garbage band
I don’t understand what’s to like about this - it was too long and was just noise. I would’ve probably given it a 1.5*, but it’s definitely not getting 2*.
3/10
01) Teen Age Riot - 6,5 02) Silver Rocket - 5,5 03) The Sprawl - 5,0 04) 'Cross the Breeze - 5,0 05) Eric's Trip - 5,5 06) Total Trash - 5,0 07) Hey Joni - 5,0 08) Providence - 1,0 09) Candle - 6,0 10) Rain King - 5,0 11) Kissability - 5,0 12) Trilogy - 5,0 TOTAL: 4,96 (50/100) Current ranking: 714/761
Did not like. Just noise.
I hate these guys
A lot of good music came out of this period in music. It all propelled forward but this was not musical enough for me to like. I don't actualy remember this band.
even they got so bored of their songs that they'd change into making random noise halfway through the recording, if you'd like more of my thoughts on the matter check out Track 6
Nothing much to talk about. Wasn't impressed.
Yaaaaaawn… Diablo Cody was right when she had Elliot Page describe this as just being noise
Two things strike me about this record (and Sonic Youth in general): #1 It sounds like the band puts their tracks together by first jamming, then gluing pieces from the jams together and calling it a "song". Those jams might have been fun to do, but the results never sound like thought-out pieces - they just sound like people randomly scrubbing away on guitars, with vocal melodies tacked on as an afterthought. #2 For all of SY's so-called experimention with alternate tunings, etc., the guitars on these records sound practically unadorned (aside from some fuzz), as though adding any processing would ruin the SY "aesthetic". The bare-bones sound of cheap 'n' tinny pawn shop guitars gets old very quickly though. (Same goes for things like vocals, it's as though the band thinks a decent well-miked and properly treated vocal would sound inauthentic somehow. *Trouble is* that the raw quality of the vocals on this record sounds like the product of incompetent engineering and production rather than something "genuine".)
I found it very repetitive! I wish I enjoyed it more.
Dog shit
Nicht aus Spotify
En tykkää
There were some tree surgeons outside and they were cutting the trees. I paused the album and thought my pause button was broken because I could still hear the incessant drone. It occurred to me at that point that it must not be that enjoyable if it doesn't sound much different to a chainsaw.
Bad
I didn't anticipate how bad this album would be. 1 star or F.
Not my kind of music
Super flat, boring sound
The suck. I wish I could give -5.
Two track and it got on my nerves. Not for me.
Dude I’ll edit this if I finish but this is so bad. So so bad. Just noise. I think this would be fun to play potentially but it’s just so grating whenever I skipped a song I felt a huge sense of relief. It’s so cacophonous it makes me feel bad about my life. Isn’t music supposed to make you feel happy or sad or something, not assaulted?
Noise
Ikke min greie.
Never forget what they did to Nardwuar
This is dissonant dilettant crap - truely awful. I don't understand the fuzz about it at all.
No
Total trash
Pretentious rock and roll for boring down and outs who miss Kurt Cobain.
Sonic Youth just aren't my thing. I like other noise projects, but somehow Sonic Youth just doesn't strike me. It's just kind of frustrating how they always sound like they don't know how to tune their instruments nor even really play them properly at all, even after all these years. At least they named one of the songs right: "Total Trash" is total trash. I'm not getting those 7 and a half minutes back, and I have no desire to listen to it again.
Hummmm...
Terrible all around. Every song on this 70-minute album sounds the same. Every vocal is terrible. The bass has no attack, leaving the whole thing sounding so thin and wimpy. Sonic Youth have gotta be one of the most overrated bands of all time.
p600. 1988. 1 star. Average garage band with average songs spreads what little talent they have too thinly over 70 minutes of discordant noise. Neither important or influential. Don't believe the hype.
*An album with a variety of tunes, most were NOT easy listening. Too many tracks 32?
just noise ...
An album in which every song goes on for much too long. Even the short ones.
Did not like at all. I enjoy some Sonic Youth songs, but this album was mostly unlistenable for me.
YIKES, not into this at all - lots of noise, nothing I could really listen to and enjoy
ow that hurt
“Can’t be much longer” I think as I wearily open the album on Spotify. I’m 4 songs in. Kill me.
Might have had more impact if there were fewer tracks. Less is more, I got bored.
Didn't finish. Listened to mazzy star album instead and it was 1/3 of the length and 3 times better
Schrottrock
Even some rap albums are more interesting to listen to. A rare record of irritability. 2 out of 10.
⭐️ Pretty bad… first song was alright the rest sucked.
No mas.... waving the white flag. 1001 you've made your point. I'll do whatever you ask just please, please no more Sonic Youth. I stand by the guitar sounds are good.
Oh fuck you.
It’s fitting to me that this record has a song called “Total Trash”. This one goes on for far too long, and is filled with noisy riffs and lackluster vocals. It’s not even good as background music.
A bit too distorted and loud for me, the first song was great though
Just didn’t vibe with this. Kinda in and out the whole time.
Nothing here to keep you coming back whatsoever.
Absolutely terrible. A dull, grey 70-minute musical wasteland. Noam Chomsky wrote a book about ‘Failed States’ and I think Daydream Nation was listed as one of them. 1.5 stars.
just terrible
This wasn't what I expected. It was a hot day. I was busy in work. I had too much coffee. This album sounded like it was recorded in a garage. TOO MUCH NOISE.
"Total Trash" ... ja, kommt hin
Pure noise pollution. Obviously influential but not my taste.
Too Much Noise.
Abusive.
Muito adolescente para meus ouvidos
Did not enjoy, bunch of whiney grindy sounds
meh, just meh.
Coincidentally this came only three days after "Goo" which I didn't like too much. After three songs, it started to heavily annoy me. Some of the songs seem to never end. Actually they do, but only after more than seven minutes… Not my cup of tea.
Sonic Youth have never been my jam. This, being one of their earlier albums, features pretty terrible production and I've always found their songwriting to be pretty amateurish. I've never understood why they get the acclaim they do because even during their peak, there were much better bands creating significantly better music in very much the same vein.
Meh, track 6 puts it succinctly, Total Trash
Morris, Joseph, Emma, Milo, and Madi could do better
The alleged "genius" of this album must be over my head. Sounds like a bunch of high school kids making noise in the garage.
I didn’t enjoy. Had a hard time listening all the way through.

Just not my thing
1.... Aturde
Not a fan, just guitar feedback and drony, angsty vocals. Noise!
I can't put my finger on why I found this album so irritating, but I couldn't finish it
A name I knew but had never listened to. Famous for having a woman, Kim Gordon, in the band. Albums that I listen to while I’m working suffer if they’re noisy and distracting like this as I wanted to get it over with so I could concentrate. Is that fair? Possibly not. Do I care? No. Listen to again (possibly) - The Sprawl
Might be the worst record I've ever heard. Just a bunch of industrial noise!
Oof, not much good to say about this album. Weak/yelling vocals paired with instruments making noise (fuzz and feedback) that occasionally broke into the faint sounds of actual music. A painful listen.
