Reviews (page 8 of 10)
Why am I not more excited about Sonic Youth? I know I listened to them back in the day, this is music I like, but.. I've always just been 'meh' on them. I'm forcing myself to give them a studied listen this time. Still, I know they are important for when/where they are in the genre... just no spark for me.

Nice indie/psychadelic rock, but sometimes bit lengthy
Didn't get to listen to all of it but it was dynamic and varied, which I liked. I also like female singers that don't sing all breathy with baby voices. I need to finish the album!
Better than what I was expecting, some good stuff in there.
!
Catchy guitar riffs but very flat album overall with not much progression in sound. Live performances are great
I always only liked some of their songs
1988. Key Songs: Teen Age Riot, Candle
Rock. Nothing really notable about it. Somewhat easy to listen to.
I'd never heard the full album before but I think I've definintely come across something from it before... it's alright, some of it heads towards a lot of the shoegazey metal stuff I don't mind but overall it was a bit long. Come Across was a really good song, but the singing wasn't great. Either way would listen to a few tunes from it again.

I liked a couple of songs (computer age, within you without you, silver rocket, the sprawl, cross the breeze) but not enough to listen to a double album. 2 stars
It’s not just because I can’t hang with the noise, though I understand that’s all some people will really hear in this album. But I did enjoy some of the punk stuff like Eliminator Jr and Rain King. But overall, just because it’s weird doesn’t mean it’s good. And quite a bit of it is just boring weird, which is not my kind of weird. And just because an approach to an album is influential in its time (noise) doesn’t mean it holds up. It’s often an unenjoyable listen. It’s interesting when I put on my cultural history hat, fun to imagine how disruptive and fresh it was once, how this impacted the 90s, etc., but that’s about it. Can we just be honest about that? Do we have to revere all music just because it was historically important? Some music is just better for performance than albums. I’m sure this would have been really cool to see live in 88. As a front to back album though, will not be relistening
I don't think I'm ever gonna be a Sonic Youth fan. Someone on here described it as "nonsensical twatery" which I think hit the nail on the head
Good bones. Flawed in the finer details. Lyrics are drab and full of cynicism, drums are empty and hollow. Too much noise. But in '88 this pushed some buttons and set people up to be late 80's punks. But in the big '26 almost 3 generations of punk developed after that. Another right time right place album Gen X creams the blue jeams for this band and album but it simply doesn't hold up 38 years later to anyone else who wasn't there.
there were a few songs i could sit through but in general hated it
Partially known. I prefer the music to the noise. After awhile, it all sounds the same.
Meh. Still not a fan.
Sometimes they would have me and then the song would make a left turn and devolve into unpleasant noise or it would go on way too long or both. Not a fan.
Another album where each song starts off promising but then goes on too long, slowly devolving into dissonance.
4/10 Very disappointing - just a lot of noise. 70 minutes for no reason as well. If I were scoring on influence and importance, it might score higher, but I'm not
Quite forgettable. This album really is all over the place, there is just too much of everything on here, its lacking focus. 2/5
I'm just not that interested in the Sonic Youth sound And I definitely didn't need over an hour of it
Dull and repetive anti music that squacks and squeals in the back ground. Again why do they need 6 minutes to say the little they have in 3 minutes. Find his voice very annoying as well. I thought I would have liked this but alas no Who thought what we need is a double album. We haven't enough songs. I know let's extend a lot of them for no good reason.
Gen X Slop
Distorted guitars with added dissonance. I liked parts of the clashes and chaos but it just goes on for way too long. The lady singing feels more like shouting and it does start to grate after the first phrase. Album duration felt like an age to listen to, especially with numerous 7 minute tracks. Noisy for the sake of noise. 2/5
Enjoyed the prior Sonic Youth album much more than this one
A lot of strumming making a racket I often lost what was going on in the song. They have a few great songs where I think the riffs are clearer.
Not for me
Eh...
Totally get that this was revolutionary and inspired a bunch of other musicians but this sounds like noise to me. I don’t get the appeal, and I do like alternative rock music. (2)
maso meeeee
It’s aight. Not exactly my cup of tea, but high energy youth angst is a vibe, for sure
After my first listen, I really wasn’t keen. After a second listen, I like it slightly more, but it’s still very much not for me. I can respect this album for being highly influential, but even the better tracks like ‘Teen Age Riot’ I thought were just okay. Though there are some more melodic tracks, overall it’s too noisy/abrasive for my taste (I found Kim Gordon’s vocals particularly annoying), and too long, especially given lots of the tracks are pretty samey. Noisier tracks can be effective in small doses, but over 70 minutes I just found it rather grating.
Nope. Sorry. Couldn’t cope.
Didn’t age well
It had more talent than Robert Wyatt, but it was still just a lot of noise to me:/
A couple songs were ok but not a great album
Some of the songs had real promise but then they would just turn into a distorted mess. And it just kept going and going...
I’m disappointed that I couldn’t get into it. Heard good things about Sonic Youth but it didn’t capture me at all.
Heard it before. This album is pure Sonic Youth but sadly I'm in no mood to listen to them today. Teen Age Riot is a banger though 2/5
me standing at the back of a gig with a warm tin trying not to yawn while lots of people with cool hair very earnestly 'get it' at the front.
Highlight: Teen Age Riot
Enjoyed it in parts, prefer Dirty as a more rounded album and maybe more accessible than this one. Wanted to give 2.5 to this one.
I'm not that familiar with the groups work but parts of the album were quite a good.
Every Sonic youth song starts off sounding promising and halfway through turns obnoxious.
I didn’t get a chance to listen to this album yesterday, and by didn’t get a chance I mean I didn’t want to. We’ve had them before. I gave it a 2 then and I’m giving it a 2 again for the same reasons.
A bit different from the first Sonic Youth album we reviewed but a couple of the tracks kept the same distorted and chaotic guitar sound that I didn’t care for the first time around. The music was tolerable on this listen but the lyrics were pretty bad and the vocals were absent of talent. I’m still not a fan of the band but the rock & roll kept me from wanting to fast forward past every single song this time around.
I’m over this whole “wall of sound” thing. So, I’m gonna write my review in “wall of sound” style just to regain a little sanity. Here goes: People build walls either to keep things in or to keep them out so they are usually made of stronger stuff than sound I prefer my walls made of wood and sheet rock or brick and mortar but almost anything substantial will do in a pinch but you need something palpable to make an effective wall remember Wall of Voodoo, the 80s band who had that cool song Mexican Radio I’m on the Mexican ray-dee-ohh I’m on the Mexican whoa-oh radio Whoa Joey Lawrence said “Whoa” on television Yeah that was his character’s catch phrase on Blossom the character Blossom was played by Mayim Bialik who also hosted Jeopardy a game show which takes place in front of a giant wall The Wall is an album by Pink Floyd and also a movie that was about the second world war but also a rock star and drugs it was pretty confusing also confusing is the whole “play this album while watching the Wizard of Oz” thing or was that Dark Side of the Moon I’m not sure but I know that a lot of drugs werre involved in both albums speaking of drugs I think you have to be pretty stoned to enjoy more than a few minutes of Sonic Youth’s music I mean seriously chemically enhanced all I can imagine is people spinning around in circles while listening to this music but they’re wearing turtlenecks and berets and shit I’m not sure but I know it definitely is not my scene and if I were to end up at one of their concerts I wouldn’t be dancing, I’d be standing … against the wall.
Sometimes I enjoy the lengthy soundscapes Sonic Youth birth, but I really need to be in the mood. Dirty hit the nail on the head, captured the sound but didn't overstay their welcome. This album has the sound but ironically like a daydream it is a little aimless and wandering. And that is a good thing if you are in the mood.
I had a hard time with this. Noisy and boring.
Ok so this was a slog at times…and at others it peaked my curiosity. I can’t say I won’t be back but not sure I’m up for another listen anytime soon.
4/10
They really are not my thing. It’s a lot of the same song over and over. It is also rather noisy and not as melodic.
Meh
Grunge, and not so great at that
Sigh… it’s Sonic Youth—critics’ catnip, a tangle of art-punk guitar clatter that promises revelation but mostly delivers endurance tests. When they ease up on the avant-garde throat-clearing, you can hear the band they might’ve been: “Teenage Riot” rides a relatively straightforward groove that almost passes for alt-rock accessibility, while “Total Trash” taps into a scrappy 60s garage-band pulse that suggests these noise sculptors actually like rock music. “Candle” opens with a pretty arpeggiated guitar figure and blooms into an intriguing soundscape, though the vocals remind you why their admirers call it “challenging” and the rest of us call it something else. Ambitious, sure—but ambition alone doesn’t make the feedback worth the wait.
Kinda boring outside of Teen Age Riot
Not a fan. Always thought this band was more noise than music.
Didn't make it halfway. There was enough mediocrity to avoid the 1 star but man that wasn't very fun - Wacky start. Better find its way from here... - 1h10m ... I'm not feeling great about this one - Okay wait vocalist is super chill. If this holds I can vibe - Nvm that got lame fast. 1h 10m of this will result in a 1-2 star rating
Been dreading this one for a while. I have really varied feelings on individual tracks, so I think for this one I'm going to rate/comment on them individually. - "Teenage Riot" - 4 - considering how much I was dreading this album, this track was a surprise. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Good start! - "Silver Rocket" - 1 - hated the vocals, hated the noise section, don't see the point. Fuck off. - "The Sprawl" - 2 - honestly just found this one boring, and didn't like the vocals that much (they were better than Silver Rocket though), they're (presumably deliberately) flat, and I find it really grating - "'Cross the Breeze" - 2 - largely similar to "The Sprawl" - "Eric's Trip" - 3 - bit mixed, not my favourite, the intro was bad, the rest of it was fine. - "Total Trash" - 2 - Started as a 3, ended as a 1. - "Hey Joni" - 3. - "Providence" - 1 - absolute dogshit. - "Candle" - 2 - this one is pretty inoffensive, stoner rock, would have been a 3 if not for the shitty noise section, I honestly can't understand why anyone would want to listen to that. - "Rain King" - 2 - not my vibe. - "Kissability" - 2 - Return of the Flat Female Vocals... I kinda liked the energy in this one but it's pretty repetitive and the discordance is just grating - "A) the Wonder" - 2 - repetitive, flat tuned crap. Grating vocals. - "B) Hyperstation" - 1 - really repetitive, irritating riff, irritating vocals. I feel like if you gave a few random emo kids electric guitars and told them to write and perform a song, it'd sound something like this track. - "Z) Eliminator Jr." - 2 - haha we're so quirky and edgy we skipped to Z. Oh yay more shitty vocals. The backing is energetic and has moments but mostly it's bad. Averages out at a low 2, which I think is about right versus my previous ratings. I'm not going to listen to this again, and I'm not looking forward to this band's other entries.
Gehört nicht in diese Sammlung.
I thought Sonic Youth were a grunge band, not one that laid the groundwork during the 80s. Elements of a less tuneful Pixies in the sound. Give them credit for influencing grunge scene to come, but I didn't love the album.
i think i might be a sonic youth hater. except you incinerate, i can never hate you.
I don't know why - because it feels like it should be My Kind of Music - but Sonic Youth has always left me cold. Nothing about it grabs me.
the noise part of the noise rock was a bit too much
# Album Name: Daydream Nation # Artist: Sonic Youth # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Great opening song. Most people will have heard Teenage Age riot. Sadly, thats where the fun ended. Theres too many 7 minute tracks which just seem to go on and on and on and on some more. It really doesnt need to be that complicated. Too long, too much noise. Very dissapointed because ive heard a lot about this album. # Top Tunes: Teenage Age riot / # Would I listen to it again? No
Listened to half Not my thing
Melhor do álbum: "Teen Age Riot". Pior do álbum: "Total Trash".
it wasn’t bad just not my thing
It's a no from me dawg
I grew up listening to a lot of punk and now I find I have outgrown it. The albums I listened to in my youth are great, as they bring back memories of friends and experiences. I never listened to Sonic Youth and find it hard to listen to now. Its not bad, just not for me.
Pas convaincu par la proposition, très lisse
Didn’t really do anything for me
In general, I'm not a big Sonic Youth fan, but the first half of this album was surprisingly listenable, for the most part.
no m gusto
Unable to lean on nostalgia, I found this album too noisy and a little boring.
Most of them start well, but they all eventually descend to noise. I wanted to like it but just couldn't.
I am 8 tracks in and hoping for something to grab my interest besides Teen Age Riot. Perhaps my receptors have been scrambled by pop music and sugary cereals, but I have found many tracks to be too long with little payoff. The singing has also been unconvincing. There is certainly something to be said about using dissonance to provide contrast and interest within music. 3 minutes of continuous dissonance however can start to grate, especially if the reprieve isn't stellar. Update: I enjoyed Hyperstation. Cool lyrics, nice musical progression, and while long, it felt like it actually had a reason to be. I also thought the vocals on Eliminator, Jr. were fun. Going through the album again, I think one of my biggest problems with it is that many of the tracks sound like the same song being played at different tempos.
I see its influence but the heavy distortion / punk leaning sounds are not for me. Select songs were impactful but I got lost in the noise from song to song.
A thrilling collection of guitar ideas bravely stretched to the length of a workday. Influential, sure—but sometimes feels like the band forgot to stop tuning and accidentally hit record.
Once again, not what I was expecting. Disappointing.
Yeah, that was boring.
Ei tää ny
Vähän oli erikoista räimettä. ⭐️⭐️
Olipa renkutusta
Sonic Youth may have been an inspiration to others, but there is a reason they never rose to prominence like the bands that were inspired by them. Quirky, undefined, experimental. This album lacks anything cohesive and intriguing. It’s ultimately forgettable. To be found and perhaps enjoyed only by the most devout disciples of SY.
This is the fourth fucking noise rock album I’ve gotten in a row and I still don’t like the genre. I had a little hope because the previous sonic youth record I got (dirty) was a record I enjoyed a lot. This however I did not enjoy.
Noise - not the good kind
I just don’t like listening to it very much.
yarisinda fenalik basti
First song was too long but their best
No es mi rollo
I was enjoying it until the cacophony that was Silver Rocket… wtf was that. Overall it was just mediocre nondescript and forgettable noise. No thin and
Likes the sound not the vocals
Just not or me. Punk rock is a sound that’s hard for me to enjoy and resonate with. While I understand its cultural significance the sound just isn’t my cup of tea.
I didn't enjoy this album. Others might.
So fuzzy it makes me anxious...like ASMR but bad. Definitely a me problem, but a problem nonetheless
Noise
So confusing
Teenage riot is such a strong opener. The rest is somewhat sludgy noise, not so into it
Meh
Sonic youth are a band I’ve always felt i should like more than i do. There is nothing here than changes that position. Everything is there to suggest i should love this album, but i dont. I dont hate it, it just doesn’t connect for me
Sonic Youth: a band where I am familiar with the name yet am not convinced I'd ever previously heard anything by them. I had about 4 false starts trying to listen to this album. Just kept starting it and then getting distracted and doing something else, then picking it up again, then thinking I wanted to listen to something else instead, then picking it up AGAIN. So many 7 minute songs of intermittently screeching, then noodling, guitars. I have fairly consistently not been a big fan of post-punk so I just think this wasn't really for me. I objectively know that Sonic Youth, and this album in particular, had a massive influence on music in this era, and I sort of liked Thurston Moore's talky vocals, but I have no desire to listen to it again. 2/5
Don't remember listening
Trop de morceaux qui m"ont gonflé
Very influential, but not the best by them
More crud
Not my fav
Not my thing. Too much dissonant, annoying guitar too often. Some times tapping along and then yuck.
Went on forever with no real highlight on the album
Noise, lots of noise, much too long. We are rebels, woo!
Unremarkable
"Oh, this is just great. First Homer Simpson wrecks my pig, then Cypress Hill steals my orchestra, and now Sonic Youth's in my cooler. Get out of there!" Well at least now I get the third part of the quote. Pretty sure Noise Rock is not my thing though...
I really wanted to like the album, I liked the beginning for its punky vibe which I can appreciate and reminds me of SSX. But then as i kept on listening I realized it’s not for me, too noisy, too many guitars. Sad but true
I really want to like this album more, as I know a lot of people who really enjoy it, who think I would enjoy it as well but I just don't get it. Every time I start to like something, like an interesting guitar part, some slightly off-key, monotone vocal will come in, or some wall of feedback will crash in unexpectedly and ruin it for me. It also feels unnecessarily long. I do respect their uncompromising vision but it's just not for me. I do enjoy a lot of bands that were obviously inspired by them though, so who knows 🤷♂️
I can see the appeal, but I’m just not into it right now.
Listen to some of their 90s stuff so wasn't to familiar with this. Like the 90s stuff a little better,. 2.5/5
Bit grungey for me
Well, I guess the good news is that I made twice through this album- which hasn’t always been the case with some of the suggestions on this list. I was never into Sonic Youth and after listening to this album I don’t think my opinion has changed. They are ok, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to them. Struggling between a 2 or a 3 for this one.
This album is 70% distortion.
Meh, I don’t know. I tried and failed to get into them decades ago. Just lost in the wall of noise for much of this album, though some moments did break through.
Too much noise for my taste, although I'll stick with "Sprawl"
Just not very good,
Listens: 2 (barely) Standout Tracks: None I did not care for this album at all. I am not impressed by Sonic Youth (second album on the List so far) and I really hope there isn't a third. There's a lot of noise going on; it felt disorganized, disjointed, dissonant and dizzying listening to this. At 1h 10m I wanted very much for the album to be half as long.
Post-Punk is a bit weird. This is the second Sonic Youth album, and I don't get the appeal. They also described it as "Noise-Rock" and that makes sense. The most traditional punk song I think it Silver Rocket. That one will be going on the playlist. Outside that, it's more miss than hit for me. 2stars
I imagined a Kids In The Hall Sketch, where they're a terrible band but they think they're really good, and they introduce the song: "This one is called, 'I Rode The Bus Today'" and it opens just like "Hey Joni" and after the intro they sing, "I rode the bus today because my car is in the shop! " and then the song ends with a noisy clamor to no applause from the people in the coffee shop. It's a running gag through the episode, where each time they introduce a different song, "This one is called, 'I Rode My Bike Today'" and they play a different intro because it's a 'different song', but then it's just "Hey Joni" again and he sings, "I rode my bike today because I missed the bus!" and the song ends in the same clamor to bewildered looks from a couple of other people in the produce section of the grocery store. Each time it's in a different unusual location - a backyard barbecue, an office building amongst the cubes, the tarmac at an an airport - and each time it's a 'different' song, but they're really all the same and equally as unpleasant to listen to, and no one understands why they're there and think they're so great. That's what this album felt like to me.
Overly monotonistic sound.
Thought I liked this after the first couple of songs, but I could only take so much mediocre indie-punk-rock featuring discordant noisy guitars for so long.
Can hear their influence on a generation of bands but doesn’t connect with me.
Pretty good!
Didn’t do anything for me.
idk idk. i really thought this would be my thing and it's just not. ok im halfway through and im just not interested :( what im learning about myself through this project is that i love pop music and vocals and melodies. i never imagined i'd be someone to give Simple Minds a 4 and this a 2 but i am! that's just who i am!
i can understand why this was so foundational for indie rock and i agree with its placement on this list but if i'm being honest it was a complete and total slog. i thought i liked one song off of it but apparently that was just my spotify on shuffle playing something else.
Struggled to get into this one
No engagement. Wasn't awful.
Meh.
Could never get into Sonic Youth, even though they have that strong association with neil Young. This was no different Some songs were good and loud, and some were just loud.
Didn’t listen to all of it, but not exactly blown away by the first few tracks.
Some of the vocals are not my favorite but overall not a bad album. I think I'd like it more if it was only instrumental. May just not be for me.
Not great everything samey, liked A the wonder the most
Oh no 70 minutes of Sonic Youth definitely not looking forward to this at all. Let's see if this album can break the streak of the other four albums getting a 2. Can't believe we have 5 Sonic Youth albums on here. To be fair Teen Age Riot is actually a pretty good song. But in classic Sonic Youth fashion they put their best song as the first on the album. Did not like too much after that, just a bunch of noisey dribble. Probably their best album so far, maybe it is because I listened on a speaker rather than headphones, but still not enough to get it out of a 2. We will go 2.8
Had its moments but way too long. I hope we're done with Sonic Youth.
This album was OK. It definitely had a lot of noise. I had a hard time focusing in on this album but didn't actively dislike it. I just didn't find it very interesting. 4/10
Another iconic band that I have mixed feelings on. Some cool ideas on here, but I just can't get into the whole Noise rock thing. I needed a bit more structure.
Não me cativou.
I know Sonic Youth is a legendary band but this isn't the genre for me. Didn't enjoy it and found it to be pretty grating. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)
it's ok, not catchy
Comes off like a chaotic jam session from a local amateur band where the microphone’s on the fritz and there's just a lot of noise. It feels more like an experiment than a cohesive album.
Not for me
why is this on the list
2/5. Boutique Punk is the only thing that comes to mind when listening to this album. And I don't like punk for the most part.
Bad
Not really my cuppa, never was into them back then. Listened again and I still don't really like them.
Not great
Cool
surprisingly ok.

mmmmmmmmmm sometimes i felt it and other times i was bored as hell LMAO
I don’t get Sonic Youth.
Sonic Youth you could never make me like you.
I still don’t like Sonic Youth. This album was mixed horribly and was too long too
I have been hearing SY songs since the beginning, but never really warmed to this album I did enjoy many moments - suprising sounds, phrases and arrangements, but no one entire song here really hit an emotional chord with me Teen Age Riot came the closest, but still not a tune that I'm going to want to seek out for another listen any time soon Songs from other albums have made it into my collection over the years, but this one is a swing and a miss for me - I vote for EVOL, Goo or Washing Machine over Daydream Nation every time
I dunno if having had to listen to two of their albums already colored my opinion (it probably has), but I hate Sonic Youth. Yes, this album (like some of their others) has brief sections that are pleasant and sound good and are doing interesting things musically. HOWEVER, the vast majority of this is just screaming, be it from a fuzzed out guitar (that's also out of tune because that's aRtSy) or someone literally screaming. I don't understand what's supposed to be so profound about Sonic Youth. I just don't get it. It's just painful. Also this album is way too long.
Didn’tget much if chance
that was really hard to finish. i really think i would have liked it more if it was an instrumental album
I prefer EVOL and Goo way more.....bloated...
Rock, 1988 -> 2
Similar to the other Sonic Youth album on this list in that there's really not much that stood out. The girl's singing was rough, but the guy's was a bit better. Just kind of noise overall though. 2/5
Not really my thing. Just didn't vibe with it.
An album I should like but I don’t
So noisy and boring
Nabacano, ujednačeno, bez tačke i zareza, suvišno, beskorisno. I jedna polovina ovog duplog je previše.
Noise
Ambient music as far as I’m concerned. Probably need to listen closer. Just not sure I want to. The Sprawl was kinda noise
Disappointing. The music is good but repetitive and becomes dull. The lyrics and the singing are poor. I struggled to see what the point of it was.
In something of a huge bit of heresy, this is not my favourite Sonic Youth album and in fact, I find it a bit of a chore pretty much right after Teen Age Riot concludes. I’ve had phases where this and Sister fight it out for top SY but those days are well in the past now. I admire what these happy go lucky kids accomplished in this era, but I very much prefer the later O’Rourke period that kicks off with my actual favourite Sonic Youth album, Murray St. (Goo is a close second and tomorrow will be my fav, etc). In general I have a like/disinterest relationship with SY and as my tastes largely seem to be consolidating around songs with less fat, well, the shorter, concise focus or calculated, rehearsed sprawl of the later years suits me better. I could go on at length about how boring they were live in their ostensible heyday but that would also be dull.
3 from Sian 1 from Deb
Inexplicably popular. It probably was influential/cutting down edge in its day and should be listened to for that reason, but today it sounds clichéd and repetitive. Given its pedigree, it should hold up better - but it hasn’t.
# Playlist Track - Teen Age Riot # Notes - Tried Sonic Youth a few times now. Even went to see them at a festival years ago. I kind of get the appeal, but definitely it's not for me. - Not enough substance to justify over 1h playing time. Everything starts sounding the same and the riot blends into noise that I just can't get to like.
meh
Teen Age Riot is fine but overall this album is not my cuppa tea
3/10 - I don’t really like sonic youth
Cum on feel the noize!
it was alright got real noisy at some parts
I don't get why you need so much Sonic Youth on this list. If I'd had this one before the others maybe I'd have rated it higher, but I've become jaded.
133/1089 - Drums should be much louder in the mix. I can see why they were influential and all but this was really boring to listen to. All the songs sound the same and themselves have redundant forms and similar tempos. Dissonance is fine and all but if you repeat it too much, the listener gets used to it and the dissonance starts to become consonant. Having a balance between consonance and dissonance is a key part to having music that actually takes you somewhere (not to mention rhythm, register, form, etc.).
I feel like I should like this album and one day it may click for me but it just didn’t on this listen. 4/10
I do not like Sonic Youth. Don't get the hype
bo
This was very “meh” for me. Not bad, sure. But certainly long and meandering. Not particularly interesting or pleasant.
I do not like Sonic Youth.
I expected yelling, which was thankfully absent. But guitar feedback is also not my idea of a good time. I liked some of the blander ones just fine, but nothing to write home about…Still glad to be more knowledgeable in my dislike for the band.
Rämpytys rock, klickar inte helt :/
I thought I would like this one. I like the Cure, Depeche Mode, and a lot of the bands that are usually considered in the same conversation as the Sonic Youth. But this album was just loud and annoying for an hour. Great if that's your thing but I just don't enjoy it.
I wasn't expecting to like this based on the people I know who get excited about Sonic Youth and I was right. The music I enjoyed a lot, but the lyrics and the singing really ruined it for me. They really got me with the first song... their most popular song and all. It's funny how that's the only song I really liked from start to finish--guess that might explain why it's their most popular song.
Not great. Not awful.
I did not dislike it as much as the other two albums I’ve had by Sonic Youth, but I couldn’t voluntarily put this on and listen to it. Each time I thought I might like a song, the next one or two set me back three steps with the noise pollution. Just not my band.
if you like noise rock, you'll love this. if not, the most average album you'll ever hear.
LOUD NOISES
Was ok for one song but after that it was too much
Very genereic grunge in my opinion. Nothing special honestly. Meh meh meh. Specific rating - 2.5 Fav song - candle Least fav- the sprawl
Most songs were far too long. I wish I knew why these idiots in particular feel the need to ruin a perfectly good song with noise. Extended runs of fucking instrument abuse. Just....why?? On more than one occasion, they would be onto something cool, then they would decend into some noise riddled horseshit and ruin everything. These guys do not need a double album. A standard length album is more than enough Sonic Youth... Favorite songs: Teen Age Riot, Rain King, Eric's Trip, 'Cross the Breeze Least favorite songs: Total Trash, Silver Rocket, Providence, A) The Wonder, B) Hyperstation, "Z) Eliminator, Jr." 2/5
Not to bad, a bit samey across the first couple songs and poor quality on Spotify but overall a fun listen
Not for me
Dit is rock met D I S T O R T I O N! FAVO: Teenage Riot
I just don’t like noise bands
I think there are more bad tracks here than good ones. Can I appreciate their music without liking it? :) The angsty guitar solos and screaming really isn’t my cup of tea… Best songs: Cross the Breeze Teen Age Riot Silver Rocket
2 too noisy and I couldn't get through all of the songs. Although I understand the significance Sonic Youth made
Yet again, we run into the “cool kid” of the 1001 albums list. I clearly need to meet a SY fan and have them teach me why im lame I didnt like this album and cant find many reasons to go back. Teen Age Riot was good and the rest were practically angsty noise.
2/5, genere che mi annoia, mid
Meh. Boring. I don’t care enough to research.
Listened to this album and several of their other hits as defined by Tidal and just not feeling what they are doing. All in all it was more shouty that I wanted it to be.
So much noise and parts that go nowhere. Sonic Youth is pretty high up for me on bands I want to like but don't. I've listened to this album a number of times before, and it's just never caught on for me.
Feels like something I should love but it just sounded like a lot of banging around. Will have to revisit this when I get more time to lay with this big bastard.
Hm. I don’t get it. Very repetitive punk rock chords and vague nonsense lyrics. Some of the songs sound very cool for the intro, but there’s absolutely no excuse for them to go on for 4 to 7 minutes. It’s proto-noise rock I guess where you’re supposed to gain something from the repetition? Sadly I’m not able to do that.
Didn't really love anything in here, wasn't offensive either, but just didn't love it.
Nothing to get too excited about
Some cool instrumentals but some of the dissonance triggered an anxiety attack from me. Fav song candle
Sonic Youth never held my attention when they first hit the scene and, this time, I really tried to get into it but still failed. I don't get their appeal--especially from a musical point of view--they just don't seem very interesting or entertaining.
Cheeks 1.5
2.5, went by quick on a dark November morning.
I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. Some of it seemed like muddle noise. I think Sonic Youth has some decent albums, this just isn't one of them.
It had bits that were ok, but mostly it was just lots of noise. I feel like I should like Sonic Youth with elements of both rock and punk - it just didn't click for me and I felt pretty irritated by the end
Man this album made me feel officially old. The whole time i kept thinking “this is just noise!”
I wanted to like it but I did not. SO BORING and somehow also really irritating. I don’t get it
There are some melodies and even some vocals but nothing I would listen to again.
Felt like it could've been something for me with some sections of quite ambient guitar playing with much chorus. Leans a bit into shoegaze territory sometimes as well. But nothing really stood out to me. When I thought a track was going the right direction, instead they chose to take it the wrong way. Maybe I need to listen to the album more, not sure. Not a fan at the moment though.
Sonic Youth is always a toss-up for me. Sometimes they hit with a gritty, noisy charm. Other times, it just feels like they’re jamming for the sake of it. This one falls into the latter category. There’s clearly some creativity here, and I get why people call it influential, but most of it just didn’t land for me. A few interesting moments scattered around, but not enough to make me want to come back to it. Definitely a miss this time.
When you make a clone of the Velvet Underground, then clone it again, then clone the clone, you get this untuned unlistenable non-sequitor spewing garbage. Like the bad practice tapes of the crappy punk band I was in as a 17 year old, except somehow they made a record? Because they're from New York maybe? At first it was "Oh, a little Smashing Pumpkins precursor, ok!" but they really lean into the atonal stuff REALLY HARD. The only emotion it evokes is annoyance. And this from a person who has seen this band live and paid money for at least one of their albums (which also is not good). One of the most overrated bands of all time and absolutely the most overrated band of the alternative rock era (1986 - 1994 approximately when all these guys - Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, etc. - got major labels deals because of Nirvana). 1 extra star for the song 'Cross the Breeze, and Kim Gordon.
Up until about track four, it sounded pretty similar. Indie. And I know people don't like to use the term indie when it comes to describing music, but you know exactly the kind of sound I mean when I say that. Then 'Cross The Breeze' is up next and what a change of pace. It's fast, loud and raw and really made me sit up and listen. You can hear the punk tinged influence. I can absolutely see why and appreciate that this may have inspired a lot of bands, but for me it was just a little too distorted and messy at times. It goes past the point of liking it and more towards 'just noise' in my opinion. Some really good highlights though. 'Z) Eliminator, Jr.' is definitely leaning into the heavy metal sound and 'Teen Age Riot' and 'Hey Joni' are also very good. As is the case with a lot of alternative indie-esque bands, I just find it all slightly too samey sounding. I enjoyed the heavier and faster tracks a lot, and just wished they would have done a 45 minute album in that style.
Hauskaa! Eikö olekkiin taas hupaisee temppuilua!!. .... ... ei... tylsähkö tällä kertaa surullista..
Some of the songs are not nearly as obnoxious as everything else I've heard from Sonic Youth, but they aren't enough to save this album.
Too indie....
Let’s get some h and crash at an old industrial warehouse. Idk might need another listen but bad vibes
Average
Some decent guitar and bass work here, but I don't care for the vocals or about 2/3 of the songs.
bit of a drone after a while, expected more from the late to the party punks
Ive made ot about halfway through this album, and Im really not feeling it. I can appreciate the stylistic choice to alter the timbre and sound of common rock instruments, and their willingness to push the envelope on having a sound be both discordant and rhythmic. However, I find myself just really not enjoying most of the songs. Overall- just not for me. I can see how it was an influential album on the alt rock of the 90s, but I dont really enjoy the sound they were going for.
2/5
Auch nicht mein Fall.
Noisy alt rock, nothing to hold my interest here
Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation is a sprawling, ambitious double album that established them as alternative rock icons. While the album's influence on alternative rock is undeniable, it can be a challenging listen for newcomers. The extended jams and atonal guitar work can feel indulgent at times, and the overall length can be daunting. If you're a fan of experimental rock or a die-hard Sonic Youth follower, Daydream Nation is a must-listen. But for casual listeners, it might be a bit too abrasive and esoteric.
Too much ...
The first song "Teen Age Riot" is a really great song that I love. Unfortunately the rest of the album is sort of not my jam. It would have been great to hear when I was in high school but the experimental noise type stuff just isn't for me anymore. I do enjoy some of their other work though.
I almost really like this album, but of course it wouldn't be a Sonic Youth album if the actual good songs were outweighed by the sheer amount of pretentious bullshit.
Funktionaalinen 2,5.
noise rock gotta be my least fave subgenres of rock lmfao
Woof, not normally on the ‘this album was too long’ train, but this album was too long. Not the worst by a mile, but it feels hyper repetitive to me.
TIL the thing I didn't like about the first Sonic Youth album I got (EVOL) is called noise rock, I think. Parts of this were enjoyable, but most of the promising songs ended with a 3 minute discordant jam. I can appreciate the talent behind what they're doing, but I think this genre just isn't for me. Teen Age Riot is worth saving though.
Track 7 had me hoping the album had finished. Track 1 was great though.
I'm just not a fan of Sonic Youth. Alt Rock royalty or not, It just don't move me.
Don’t get it - feels like there’s no choruses.
This ain’t it dog
Thought I would like it more. Felt like noise.
This is another album that in theory I should love, but I just didn't connect with. Nothing jumped out for me. Songs were long and meandering with no real payoff. I felt mostly bored with this one.
Not that good..
The songs overstay there welcome. And they sound like punk rock for someone who thinks The Cure is hardcore.
Not my thing
Not really a fan. It’s really noisy.
Well as my first intro to Sonic Youth it was interesting. Didn’t really enjoy it too much. The album as a whole was very long. I often found the mix to be very muddled, sounding more like a collections of sounds rather than a melodic cohesive piece. The lyrics were fine when I could pay attention to them but I often found them buried in the mix
Pretty boring album
Decent album but really doesn’t do much for me
Not my style. Also, not the album's fault but kinda tired of the older similar sounding albums. Was ready for it to be over.
It's got that 80's vibe for sure. Guitar driven. Understated vocals. Purveyors of the "noise rock" genre. It is held out as one of the best albums of all time. Huh. It sounds very familiar to the times.
Not too terrible. Not amazing...
I don't have much to say here. Meh pretty much sums it up
angsty punk? Not really impressed.
i'm not a fan of noise rock (because i'm old it sounds like the youth making too much noise without purpose or, like, melodies), but the combination with alternative music makes it tolerable, as did the female vocalist occasionally popping in. not enough to get above a 2, though, and the fact this was an unnecessary double album did them no favors either. regardless, this album releasing in 1988 shows how ahead of the alternative curve the sonic youth were!
Teen Age Riot //
Sounded like just a bunch of noise to me.
Not my jam!
Popppier than I thought.
This is a band I always want to like more than I actually do like. I'm not a fan of the distorted vocals I think.
Was okay, but felt repetitive after a bit since a lot of songs sounded so similar.
Post-punk Indie; yuck. With the exception of the Replacements, rock music from the late 80’s pretty much sucked. What’s bad is bad, and you shouldn’t get points for ushering in the Indie era.
Uhg
Not my jam
This is one those albums that critics wank themselves silly over. I don't get it. It's like a bunch of middle class american arts graduates who like sniffing their own farts got together and said: 'Why don't we make a Joy Division album but remove all traces of character and make every song double the length? Oh, and while we're at it lets all stand 10 feet away from the mics!' I tried listening to this album before on a plane whilst half asleep. Even being half asleep I thought it was dragging.
I expected to hate it and I didn’t, but I didn’t like it either and could have done without it on a cold windy January Monday. Had to turn it down a notch, which probably defeats the object.
meh
While some songs do peak my interest, there's a lot that's just to the point of being obnoxiously noisy. Still the songs that did stand out are quite good. Standout tracks: Teen Age Riot, 'Cross The Breeze, Hey Joni, Rain King, 4 out of 10
