liked the other album better, bit experimental

What can you say? High quality mod 'n' roll with a couple of truly iconic moments thrown in. One thinks you can get bored of 'My Generation' but slap that bad boy on, pump up the volume and experience the thrill anew. 'I'm A Man' is quality too, right?

Very good album, just probably won’t listen again

This is how we got from the Beatles to Green Day.

Blues, rock, pop. Mad good

Oh boy an absolute classic!!!! Talkin bout my generation!

A few nice little ditties on here. If these kids can keep it together they could really go places!

A lot of fun and a bit of a missing link between early Beatles and the stones

sehr starke beatles-vibes, aber eigener spin

Great album, great hits

Doesn't sound like The Who that we know now, but was interesting to hear where they started. Not my favourite genre of music but I can recognize the significance of it. Enjoyable listen!

A classic

A fun album. Some well known songs. Others I had not heard before.

A classic album, but not quite yet fully developed into musical trailblazers they are remembered as. Too much of a boy band pop influence on this album, and it only gets a 4 because their next several albums are all 5s.

This album has a lot of hits and is overall really good. Of course I love My Generation , I Don’t Mind, and The Kids Are Alroght. The rest of the album is pretty rockin as well.

Classic.

Good stuff

Not my type :/

Fairly typical early British Invasion stuff. The Kids Are All Right and My Generation are perfect songs.

Great album, total mix of styles from Beatles to Johnny Cash to early punk.

18th May 2021 Listened to this in the morning in our front room whilst doing some work. Really like their cover of I'm A Man, felt a little out of place but some great instrumentals to close and the obvious classics.

Never spent much time on The Who. Glad this generator made me. Excellent debut album that was a trend setter.

An explosive debut, and the hardest mod pop recorded by anyone. At the time of its release, it also had the most ferociously powerful guitars and drums yet captured on a rock record. While the execution was sometimes crude, and the songwriting not as sophisticated as it would shortly become, the Who never surpassed the pure energy level of this record.

Great fun, US soul covers and My Generation!

Pretty good. Especially if you consider the album's context in rock history (which I had to read about on Wikipedia)

Iconic. Very influential album IMO. Put The Who on the map. Loved my generation!!!!

Mod rock rabioso, con riffs superidentificables. Entretenido

Great album! The Who is good, turns out!

Similar to my review for Bad Company, this album had a lot of classics and was an enjoyable listen. Again I wish we had some stars to deal with, I would put this a bit lower than 4/5 (but definitely higher than 3/5). I will reserve a higher rater for other The Who albums.

Good album, swingy!

4.0 - Solid British invasion blues-based rock 'n' roll from the 60s. Spectacular drum sound, soulful vocals, interesting guitar and piano fills.

Ahead of its time, a few all-time classics and rest of beautiful pop-rock songs.

Ich bin ja Fan, deshalb nicht zurechnungsfähig. Weil aber die Restaufnahmen – Cover, Old School-Blues-Sachen – das Ganze bisschen runterziehen, gibt es einen Stern Abzug.

yea this is good. I wish it wasn't mono, its a little flat. My Generation is a killer single. Please, Please, Please, Please Me is a good cover. THAT GUITAR TONE ON THE OX!!!

Very good. I knew more songs than I expected. Classic that aged well

7/10 bonito, my generation buena canción

The Who were all over the place finding an identity in the 60s. Their debut is a great rock prototype of what the genre of rock would expand into later on.

Tres bon album. The who ne me decoit jamais. 4.5

It is the who.

great album

Love all the blues on it

I got a sense of The Who at their purest. Listened to this so loud that i got tinnitus.

Classic rock at its best!

I wish they'd all just ffffffade away.

Awesome band. Forgot how much I enjoyed listening to them. Great album

The Who é sempre muito bom

Surprisingly diverse in sound. The Kids are Alright is a poppy track, Please Please Please is soulful, and the title track it, well, game changing. Not an album I listen to much, but one hell of a debut.

Who’s good? Yes.

I enjoyed that, even if it wasn't supposed to be so long

хороший альбом, для своего времени, как образец мод-попа имеет достаточно оснований для любви среди ценителей, но критиками переоценён однозначно.

Classic album. Love it.

7.5/10 FT: My Generation

I think I could sense some of the influence that this album/The Who would have on later generations emo and punk music. Great album, maybe a little repetitive and unnecessarily long, though.

Escucha

Sinceramente muy parecido a los beatles

Not a bad album just slightly below average. A lot of the songs on here just come off to me as imitation The Beatles, which isn’t bad but it’s clear that The Who had not really found their sound yet. They would go on to make better albums.

I love the who but this is a weak album in their early career

6/10 quite generic British Invasion sort of album. Decent for a first album though, quite liked the kids are alright, and my generation is a catchy hit.

4.9/10 = it was a good listen but i feel like after a while they all blended together a little and i wouldn't really be able to remember any specifics except a few, still good for a debut though

Sounds like the Beatles

lowk messed with it, but there was some tracks that makes it sound gritty and fun😭

'My Generation', an iconic track, and the rest of the album is just as good. Three stars...

some good songs, some ok songs. nothing extraordinary.

alright, pretty good

Again one of the albums I probably would have loved if I grew up in the 60s. Today it's hard for me to gloss over the production and general old sound. Because I judge on if I was bored, annoyed, or will listen again or immediately put the album in my rotation, I give it 3 stars.

Better to come, but an impressive start.

nothing about the who stands out to me but maybe that's because music has progressed so far beyond this now Would I listen again: nah Deserves to be on the list: eh 2.9

Overrated?

Reminiscent of the Beatles for me! You can hear the 50s influences undergird most of these tracks, and the forward momentum of the album generally makes for a pleasant listening experience. However, the songs themselves were nothing to write home about for me, which makes it hard for me to rate this anything higher than a three. STAND-OUT SONG: “The Kids Are Alright” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “My Generation”, “Please, Please, Please”

I hate beat music but I love The Who. I also love “The Kids Are Alright” and “My Generation.” The former is probably the best stereotypically “beat” song of all time, super nice and melodic and kinda interesting. And the latter is real great too, just a good ol’ early punk-sounding song. The rest of the songs here… uhhh…. Some thoughts. Nice Bob Dylan impression on “Much Too Much,” Townshend. The vocals on “Please Please Please” are some of the wimpiest “rhythm and blues” I have ever heard. It’s pathetic. “It’s Not True” is pleasant enough. “I’m A Man” falls into the same problem as “Please Please Please” except the instrumentation is pretty good. This album… it’s okay. The lows really drag it down though. 6.1/10

The Who’s best by far, since they keep it simple & this mostly consists of covers, but I still prefer The Sonics, The Rascals, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Kinks, Them, early Stones, & early Beatles. It just doesn’t seem to me that they possess an ounce of soul, which makes their ‘hard’ approach an unappealing bore. But I recognize what this record must’ve done to the punctured airwaves, & for that I can respect it. I can even get a degree of pleasure out of it. Just don’t tell me they invented punk.

The Who songs are great, the covers are not. The Kids are Alright.

The list could definitely do without this one (or at least swap it for Quadrophenia). The Kids Are Alright is great, and I like A Legal Matter and The Ox, which suggests that the primary problem is Roger Daltrey.

I like this better than Tommy. Something about that mono feel. I compare because Tommy was also on this list. Tommy was very pointed — it had a specific story to tell. This feels more authentic musically. We don’t get the same flashes of the modern sound thats to come as Tommy, but it’s shown differently in here. There’s some deep, raw blues influence mixed in here that made me perk up big time. overall, I don’t think it’s particularly outstanding, I like the way their sound matured way more than this or Tommy. Probably somewhere in the 3.5 range

Hadnt listened to this for a while. Good stuff.

Good album

i alr like this better than black sabbath, its giving hobie from spider verse, also ive gotten two purely male bands one after another, a lil misogynistic 1001 albums... atleast these guys r cuntier n apparently famous to the english community

Never been super into the Who. This is mostly fine. It sounds very dated at times, but it's not bad. Not something I'd likely revisit and it's not compelling me to see what I've been missing from the band. "The Ox" is pretty solid, Keith Moon is playing the crap out of the drums on that one.

Not a major ‘The Who’ fan

I love the Who and thought I was going to like this way more. It's a little annoying and droning.

3/5 Favorite Song: My Generation

Truly couldn’t name a song by The Who. Let’s see! Okay, My Generation and the kids are alright were fun little reminders. Cute vibe but not terribly memorable overall. Perhaps a function of returning to work after two weeks off but who can say.

Honestly, I had higher hopes for this album, considering the cultural icon that is the titular single. The rest was just kind of okay.

60s brit rock album, theres not much more to say, kinda cliche at points but I suppose that was just the popular sound, kinda rockin, kinda annoying. Fave song was the kinda are all right, the cover of heatwave was kinda fun and unexpected.

Surprises with how raw the sound is given how refined they became. The blues influence is still strong on some tracks yet the hints to the future were there with "The Kids are Alright". Not my favourite of their albums but worth of it's place.

Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? I know some songs How do I feel about this artist? I like the Who, but as with all these British Invaders, I prefer their later work Pre-Listen Thoughts: I think this will be good but nothing revolutionary. Favorite track(s): My Generation, The Good’s Gone Post-Listen Thoughts: I feel like all the British Invasion bands sort of started out with the same sound and then they all branched out and became more distinguishable. This is a good album but I feel like it’s before The Who really figured out what sets them apart.

pretty catchy

The Ox stands out as something more unique, ahead of its time

7/10 Algunas canciones muy del estilo de The Beatles, otras medio flojas

Not the version of The Who I like. Sorta standard jangly 60s stuff, which I didn't hate. Or love.

Much, much better than I expected.

It's early and they are very much explicitly ripping off blues musicians. I like Kids Are Alright and the title track especially. The former is a Beatles ripoff and a good one. The latter is indicative where they are going.

Man, that opening riff was pretty great. The rest of the album was very much The Who. Great guitars and I swear you can see the moments when Pete Townsend was doing his famous arm move. The album overall felt a bit average for me. The Who tends to play it safe and I felt that here.

Seemed pretty average indie rock to me, but I realise that in 1965 it was much more revolutionary - lots of newly distorted guitar etc. I think it's hard to see that now, given how much that sound had been copied and become normal.

good tunes, a bit too long for me

Seemed mid

An early outing for an iconic band with one of their most famous songs. Definitely aspects of British Invasion with a couple of sins that could easily have been sung by the Beatles or Rolling Stones. Some blues influences which led to some of their better songs. And then the titular My Generation which had aged so ironically Daltrey and Townshend would hate their younger selves (and visa versa). Ultimately a decent album with a couple of great songs, some middling songs, and a couple that are pretty forgettable.

It’s got some decent songs on there, and it’s a good first album from The Who. There’s the beginnings of what they’re going to be in there, but it’s nothing to write home about on its own. My Generation is a classic. I’d never heard of any of the others. Based on that I don’t really think this belongs on this list. It’s decent, great opening salvo for The Who, but lord knows it’s not their best work.

buen disco, pero muy largo y algunas veces comienza a sonar igual

Definitely more towards The Rolling Stones sound than The Beatles, this feels perhaps a little out of step, perhaps even a little ahead of its time, mainly because Keith Moon doesn’t want to leave any space unfilled. The album tracks struggle against the big singles, but compared to a lot of the pop in 1965, this was different enough to be welcome.

An odd record - contains their signature tune yet more than half of it doesn’t sound like them at all. A hodge-podge rush job to capitalise on singles but still with some good stuff amid the half-assed covers. But too half-assed to truly deserve a place here.

Fine but didn’t stand out.

It was *nice* but it didn't really go beyond that for me. Title track and The Kids Are Alright are the obvious standouts for me on this one.

Very classic mid-60s rock. Unusually heavy for its time. Slighty heavier Beatles.

My Gen and Kids push this into the 3, better than that Tommy wan anyway

A few good songs

This was a good who album, not a great one. I'd listen again. I did like the extended version with the extra songs though.

I wasn't necessarily looking forward to this one, especially since one of the last The Who albums on this list sort of haunts me. This was fine; it definitely excelled at some areas, but it wasn't my favorite. I didn't like "I'm A Man" cover; it felt weird.

The Who sound beings louder, more energetic sound to the jangly sound of the sixties. Seems like Roger Daltry was still coming into his singing style on this album. Good solid rock album, but of it’s time. Definitely 60s. I enjoy Keith Moon’s drumming and how Pete Townshend guitar kicks in at certain moments. John Entwistle gets bass in on “My Generation.” All band members are great musicians. “The Ox” and “Leaving Here” made my ears perk up. It sounds like they had fun recording this.

Good album. Has a lot of garage rock tracks and some tracks that are more in early 60’s rock. My Generation is a big hit and great track, but the album overall is a solid listen.

Quite charming and at times very good, butassively outstays it's welcome

Original review. Not much to add, but did I mention I'm not a fan of The Who? "I said it on the last review of a The Who album, I'm not a fan of The Who. The last one was a live recording, that was a big no. This is better, although the link sent me to the mono version so I switched it to the stereo version (which wasn't massively better). I liked "I Don't Mind, "Please, Please, Please" and "I'm A Man", but that's probably because of the blues element. "My Generation" is a classic and has been covered by many bands. It's a good debut, some classic sounds and some of the songs appealed to me. Not overly bothered by it though, not significant enough."

so cool

I’ve heard this before and I own it. The record company really interfered with this and sweetened it up to the point that all the times Townsend makes noise with his guitar it just sounds weird and clanky like in Out On The Street, or just buried like on the rest of the non-singles. I’m guessing the engineer never encountered this type of thing and had no idea what to do about it and the executives told them to make the noise less noisy. A few songs aren’t overly sweetened and smoothed including My Generation where they let Entwhistle’s bass sound good and nasty, and on The Ox where they let the guitars get distorted and captured the power in Moon’s drumming. The James Brown covers don’t really work and the Bo Diddley cover is decent, the rest of the songs are their own and are definitely good songs; I’d love to hear a remixed version of all the deep cuts with the levels set right so we can hear how they’re supposed to sound.

A solid album, I can see both what influenced them and what they influenced. Better than The Who Sell Out, but not as good as Who's Next. Only one really great song for me, but My Generation is amazing.

I didn’t grow up with The Who, and outside of respecting their significance in the music scene, I was never a huge fan. After listening to this album, I feel exactly the same. It’s a nice debut album, and instrumentally it does more interesting things than it does vocally. I can’t say I was particularly impressed by most of the lyrics, but the freewheeling atmosphere is definitely there. This band had to walk so others could run. The best songs for me were "I Don’t Mind" and "The Kids Are Alright".

Its an ok british poprock album that does what it needs to but doesnt really break the mold enhough. If heard so many simular albums like this on this website that it didnt do anything better than more renowned artists. Not bad persee

Yep, that's a 3. Apprently there are like 5 records of these guys on this list. Why? I can't imagine all five added something to music. We'll see.

It's a fun rock album from the 60s, but tbh it is really starting to show its age. It is nice but somewhat outdated

The Who is a band that I have been eyeing out for some time and am only vaguely familiar with their discography, and today I'd like to take a chunk out of it and see just what I have been missing out on for so long starting with their debut album My Generation. This debut isn't anything super crazy or original from a lot of the other work being made on the European side of the 60s. It is a pretty safe and serviceable debut with not a whole lot to add other than it is the starting point of a very iconic and influential Rock band that would slowly build a very rock solid foundation as one of the greats. My Generation feels pretty subpar for being such a boisterous debut album name for an album that feels like any other album of its' specific generation.

The Who normally bores and underwhelms me. Yes, they have good songs, but there's a reason they were 3rd string to the Beatles and the Stones.

The Who are obviously legendary and there are some good songs on this - but some of it just sounded like run of the norm classic rock. Knowing their rocking gems it was nice to go deeper with stuff that’s a bit slowed down like Please Please Please

Not as fast and furious as some, not as creative as others, but a solid indication of things to come

Ehhh it’s ok. Nothing crazy, just another rock album. Some interesting lyrics.

So many Who albums on this list but they never really seem to impress me that much... OK but mid. This one was much better than Tommy at least. I do like the title track!

early shades of greatness

Una onda tipo Beatles, me entretuve escuchando pero no me pareció espectacular. Esta bien.

It is not my cup of tea but I appreciate the energy and the good vibes of the record.

Yeah, classic rock. The blues-y influences are in show, and the whole thing has that very distinct feel. Listening to this album made me want to play more early rock bass, which I do think is a pretty high compliment. No individual song stands out, but as an album it works well. It's cohesive without being too samey. I think the fact it's only 35 minutes long is so much to its favour, it does what it does and it does so concisely. I'd rather be listening to other bands they influenced, but I appreciated this very brief sojourn.

Classic album. Doesn't mean I loved it tho. I get the same feeling listening to this that I do listening to most 60s rock. It usually doesn't do too much for me or leaves me bored. The Rolling Stones would be about the only ones who generally dont bore me. The Ox, and My Generation stood out for me on this album, but the rest didn't. Its a 2.5 rounded up to 3 for Keith Moons amazing drumming.

I Don't Mind

fun! like a dirtier version of early beatles. they prob hated that comparison lol

A couple great tracks here and they do some of the better blues/R&B covers from this generation of Brits, excellent drumming throughout. Don't think it clicks as a full record for me but can't fault it

Oh I get it now. The Who is a Rolling Stones cover band.

Im sorry how many songs was it? 30? Good lord. I enjoyed it for the most part but that’s a bit much for any band

Not my fave album by The Who but a solid listen with some great tunes.

Good, but not the best from The Who. The James’s Brown and Bo Diddly covers were the particularly weak points.

More British Invasion. An important band who’s debut is just okay. Not super into this, the covers are pretty weak but some decent tracks in here. 1 listen

60s music strikes again. I still don't love it. The who are pretty good though. Barely makes a 3 for me.

3/5 Strong 3 out of 5, had a good mix of elements from other genres which kept things interesting. Always a sucker for a long instrumental as the end track to really let out all the musical energy that didn’t get a chance to be expressed in the other songs.

Tuesday, 5 May, 2026 This album has some great tracks, and clearly reveals a band with high energy. They must have been wild to see live in this early era.

Nice, quick album of mostly forgettable tunes. Like with many other british invasion bands, it was probably impossible to make an album that was actually representative of what was I'm assuming a loud, violent, and raw live show.

Several iconic singles on this classic mod pop album

Early early Who, not my favorite period of theirs. Keith Moon already sounds like he's from another planet tho.

I was pleasantly surprised by much of this record; it sounds a lot more messy and garage-y than what I expected from my experience with later Who albums, none of which I particularly like. It's got a couple of James Brown covers and some other noisy stuff. I think it sounds a lot like 90s garage rock, though I recognize the absurdity of saying that, since it's 90s garage rock that sounds like records like this. I thought I was going to be tempted to skip "My Generation" since it's been played to death in the intervening 60 (!) years, but it worked in context with the rest of the album. (Though now it's stuck in my head, which I kinda wish would just g- g- g- go away.) I think 3?

Har missat The Who lite. Kul med en genomlyssning. Stabil och bra 60-talsrock. Inga direkt dåliga låtar. Stabil 3:a.

The Kids ae Alright, I Can't Explain, and My Generation are the stand outs to me but there are some are pretty decent tunes on here.

Probably ‘and a half’. A couple pillars of rock and roll, some high energy if kind of generic early rockers, a god awful cover of ‘I’m a Man’, and on any release available on streaming are a host of b-sides or singles or alternate versions or whatever. All the elements are here.

Always thought The Who were the least best of the British Invasion bands. Album is still solid though.

Of its time. Not as innovative as Beatles records from the same era but some decent blues based rock. I’ve never really got into the Who although I accept they have some good tunes and I can’t objectively measure their impact because they made their music before I was born but I think it’s a huge stretch to call this ‘proto punk’. Definitely not as good as the Stones or the Kinks. 3/5

I don’t listen to it very often, but on today’s listen I did find it surprisingly solid. I’m not the biggest Who fan, but I can tolerate them if I ignore how passionate their big fans get. They are a good band, I get it! and if I’m going to listen to an over long pretentious self-obsessed rock opera, I’ll pick these guys over fucking Pink Floyd every time. I’ve got a little off the topic of this particular album, sorry. Yeah, pretty good. Most commendable is that, at a time when it must’ve been impossible to ignore The Beatles, they have kept their heads down and stuck to doing what they were doing. And doing it rocking pretty hard.

Very good debut. Can't say it was really keeping me on my toes but it's as tight as a band gets.

so beatley.

Raw mod rock and early British rock built on punchy guitars, driving bass, explosive drums, and stuttering, defiant vocals surges with youthful aggression. Listening feels like being caught in a loud, crowded room where energy spills over and refuses to settle. The result is urgent and electrifying, though its rough edges sometimes feel repetitive.

Decent album featuring a few classics.

Solid album for a debut but it doesn’t move me in any profound way. Instrumentals are good, vocals are good, this album is just kinda forgettable but in a kinda good way

As much a fan I am of Tommy and Who's next, I never listened to this album in full. What a curious combination of blues, vocal harmonies and crazy druming; probably sums up the Who in general. Their musicianship makes them standout over the rest of the field, but their song structure is pretty much the same. I wasn't expecting James Brown covers, great adition. Good starting point, but really don't compare to their later output.

This was a fun little listen. Nothing Earth shattering, but I enjoyed it. 3.5/5

It feels like they hadn't quite figured out Who they were yet. This has bits of everything - some blues (which they weren't very good at), some old-school pop, a couple of James Brown numbers. Moon's frenetic drumming and Townshend's fiery guitar hint at what was trying to burst out of it all. Then, in the middle of this mess, they suddenly conjure up the title song which is great.

For the last two years I’ve been slowly coming round to the conclusion that I really don’t like The Who. I went from “I like them” to “I respect them more than I like them” to “ I neither like them nor respect them”. So imagine my surprise when I realized this album is kind of rad. But it’s not THAT good.

I had a fantastic introduction to The Who via our third form English teacher. He played it loud to the whole class while explaining the raw subversion of “why don’t you all go and fffff…..fade away”. Apparently even threatening to swear over mass broadcast media caused quite the fuss. My opinion of the who has pretty much been on a downward slide since these lofty heights. I like this album and love this song, but at best they reminded me of stuff I’d rather be listening to. I’m off to put on the kinks.

Other than the title track, quite generic. 3.5

Wasn't as impressed with this as I thought I would be.

"My Generation" gives me early Beatles vibes, but done slightly worse. Still, this is not a bad album, and has some enjoyable songs, in particular "I Don't Mind", "The Kids are Alright", and the famed title track. It is much more melodic than "Tommy", at least.

csi made me have a soft spot for the who

Harsher than i expected. "The Ox" was a great Discovery.

The pacing of me getting albums from the Who has been kinda wack honestly. I got my first album of theirs in December 2023, didn't get a single album of theirs in 2024, got 1 on January 2, 2025, and then I didn't get any again until just now. I still have 2 more of these! Why is it taking me so long to get them? Whatever. At least I like the Who. This is their debut album, because of course they have to have their debut album on the list. Okay, to be fair, this is actually pretty good by 60s debut album standards. Definitely better than the Rolling Stones' debut, that's for sure. But yeah, My Generation is a pretty solid album. Of course, the album's most fondly remembered for its title track, which is iconic for a good reason. It works pretty well as an anthem of sorts for the youth of 1965. I like the part where Roger Daltrey holds the f in the line "why don't you all fade away" for a while because it makes me think that he's going to tell you to fuck off and that's pretty cool for a song from 1965. This song is decently ahead of its time. The rest of the album? Not so much. There are other good songs, obviously. "The Kids Are Alright" is pretty good, but a lot of the album is kinda dated, mostly in the musical front. Like, the riff on "I'm a Man" sounds exactly like every Muddy Waters riff ever. I just want to point that out because you all hear it, right? What I'm trying to say is that there's not a ton of substance to this album. What is there is pretty solid. The Who's instrumental talents are all high and Roger Daltrey's a decent frontman. But, at the end of the day, this is still a band in its fledgling stages. Though My Generation does hold up fairly well as a piece of 60s rock-and-roll fun, it is pretty clear that the best had yet to come for the Who. High 3/5.

Neat snapshot of The Who when they were part of the '60s British Invasion. Kinda proto-punky in a way at times. The title track will honestly never gets old for me, but overall the band still had a ways to go from here sonically. 7/10.

way more doo wop than expected

It's OK. Bit all over the place.

Boomers

Ok album, of course contains one of if not the Who's most recognised track, My Generation itself, and the other popular track The Kids are Alright, apart from those two nothing stood out for me personally.

I like it if I just take it at face value. It definitely seems a bit derivative of a certain group of people but what's new? 3.5/5

I really enjoy the Who, particularly their 60s stuff. This album however, I didn't feel like they quite clicked yet, not quite their own. The Ox seemed to point to things to come, and My Generation is one of the greatest early hard rock songs ever made, but the rest seemed unorganized and blah. They aren't great songwriters, but they compensate with intensity and energy, and it wasn't on this album.

There are a lot better Who albums than this one. However, for 1965 this is pretty damn good.

This is a really good one. The lo-fi engineering and warmth of this record made it really easy to listen to. The music is chill and engaging and sequenced very well.

pretty good

This is my third Who album (so far!) and I’m barely more than a hundred albums in. I do not believe The Who were nearly a good enough band to warrant a not insubstantial percentage of the best/most significant/most influential albums of all time. And that's what bothers me most about this: there's this whole boomer structure in place to dictate what is the best music of all time because it was the stuff that was around when they were young and weren’t yet tired of life. Now this stuff has been going on too long and everything is too fragmented now so we have this canon that needs shaking up but it’s not going to happen. This isn’t a bad record though. Keith Moon’s drumming is what really makes it and separates it from being just another r&b influenced British Invasion record. And thankfully Roger Daltrey hasn’t brought in the art shit yet.

People try to put us ddown just because we gget around

kakto decata, albuma e alright

My Generation is a f-f-f-f-flipping fantastic single but as a f-f-f-f-f-f-f-flipfuckedy fantastic album not so much. There are about 2 classic songs at a push and one of them is called My Generation.

Not my fav Who album but good

This was okay but pretty run of the mill 60s rock. Never understood the faux stuttering or whatever in ‘My Generation’, and they seemed to be trying out some different things across the tracklist (as debut albums tend to). 3/5 okay but not amazing

The album is what I expected from 1965. Three really great hits and the remainder were typical of the era. The album did reveal some idea of what was to come from the band. All-in-all I enjoyed giving it a listen. I had not listened to the album before.

Me gustó, álbum rockero. Me parece cool la portada. Me guardé como 4 canciones

i have pretty ambivalent feelings toward this album—it’s pretty decent. Easy to listen to and catchy at times but i prefer other things honestly

Nice classic Brit-rock album, but it’s not their best album. Some of the songs sound like they’re trying to be The Beatles, but then you’ve got My Generation, which is a banger still. It’s their first album and they hadn’t found their sound yet.

I like The Who, but not a fan of the early who days.

Чего-то не зашло, хотя мне нравится рок н ролл

It’s alright

It was okay. Lots to offer. But I am definitely much more of a fan of The Who to come. The Ox was really cool, it surprised me

not my thing. sounds like it was recorded in a garage and not in a good way. It's a long record (90 minutes) and feels repetitive.

Idk i think que tienen mejores albums

Pretty cool, obviously dated because it's 1965. But good vibe. Never been much of a fan of the title track though, weirdly. Favourite tracks: I Don't Mind (but it's a cover), La-La-La-Lies, Must Too Much, Please Please Please (but it's a cover).

I liked it, interesting to think about the timing of this with the Beatles and stones

"My Generation" still slaps, but the rest is so-so

I am realizing that The Who are like The Stones for me. A greatest hits band.

Pretty good. I’m itching to hear The Who at their full potential.

Og cock rock

genuinely insane just how much these rock guys cribbed from black music of the time. some of these are James brown songs. the rest make me think pitchfork critics are fake dorks. cause I hear a lot more the who in those king of the beach songs than beach boys (god forbid mfs have some harmonic lalalas). nonetheless lowk fire. i completely understand the keith moon dick sucking. wish i could give it a 3.5 but it's closer to a 3.

wasn't big on live at leeds when we pulled it, but i quite liked this. blended together a little bit for me but i did really like the ox +out in the street

A lot rawer than other things like this from the 60s. And noisier. I like The Who. LOL!!!

Fun album

I think listening to this in 2026 and not in the mid 60s makes it extremely difficult to appreciate what’s so special about this. The Who stated that the album really doesn’t reflect their stage performance from the time and I do imagine this hit very differently live, especially given the novelty for British audiences. I just think that listening to this now highlights that the blues-y influences leaning more into what would become “hard rock” have been done better in the intervening time. I do think this is interesting particularly when compared to what the Beatles had done just a few years ago. Their early pop hits still work for me, whereas early Who recordings don’t particularly make me feel any sort of way. Maybe not doing this list in chronological order is actually a disadvantage.

Listened to the mono version. I liked this a lot. My Generation as a song doesn't do half as much for me as "The Kids are Alright". Some really nice non-singles here. Doesn't hit as hard as some of their later albums or their live set. Listen to Live at Leeds!!!

This isn't a good album. Important, pleasant to listen, sure, but it's not, y'know, good. It's a weird mix of, like, doo-wop and high energy rock-type stuff that doesn't work. There aren't any bad songs, but My Generation hasn't aged all that well and it feels pretty simple, as most stuff of the time does. What it is is a nice blueprint for the future, but again, that doesn't make it a good album.

There are 4 other Who records on the list, do you really need the debut with the singles you've heard a hundred times?

My Generation and the Ox are good. Rest is ok.

Catchy tunes Pretty similar sounding throughout Slightly underproduced sound but it works really well for this album Favorites: its not true, much too much, my generation

Solid Album, old school rock

I ended up listening to a 30 song version of this album, which was about 15 songs too long. Their rendition of "(Love is Like a) Heat Wave" was terrible. I can't distinguish between the British invasion bands anymore because they all sound the same. Still, not the worst thing I've listened to of the list.

Their first album, and it shows. It's a scattering approach with covers an instrumental, and original songs a couple of which are as good as anything they ever did. The anthem, of course, is My Generation, with its fuck you chorus of "Hope I die before I get old", Entwhistle's kamikaze bass line, Moon's "just hit anything" drumming and Townsend's self destructing guitar solo. Daltrey sings over the top of it all with supreme arrogance. It's the song that defined them and the beginning of Punk. Then you have Daltrey indulging his love of Soul Music with not one, but two James Brown Covers. Perhaps they thought if they did two they'd double their chances of getting one right. They don't. "The Kids are Alright" is another great moment. Chiming guitars and the first of Townsend's songs about men who seem lost, which would come to fruition in Quadrophenia. The other original songs are a mixed bag. La-La-La Lies is more pop than rock. It's good pop, but you don't think of The Who (Maximum R&B) recording songs that The Monkees could sing. Much too much is another of Townsend's broken men, complaining that he can't cope with how much his girl loves him. It's not true is probably the least of the originals, almost a joke about a man denying all sorts of outrageous rumours. There two songs about relationships ending. A Legal Matter has a young man who can't commit as the central figure. "Sorry baby," he sneers as he goes back to the pub and dumps the idea of marriage. Then there's Good is Gone, about a relationship that's gone sour and sung by Daltrey in a sneer John Lydon would be proud of. It's a threat more than anything else. And finally, there's The Ox, a bass solo jam that's loose and wild with everyone (including a guesting Nicky Hopkins) going berserk and Townsend coaxing a series of howls and yelps out of his guitar that probably had never been put on record before. Is it a great record? Well, no. But when it's good it really is very good. And they'd only get better.

Don’t think I’ve listened to this in its entirety which is surprising. Good early pre rocking out Who.

A required staple but no-one's favourite album.

live album better

This must have been very rebellious back then.

As a debut album it's good, but not quite as good as their other stuff has been, like *Who's Next* or *Tommy*

I'm very glad that I listened to Tommy before this, because while I really enjoyed these songs I think it lacks originality. It leans very Americana, and I sound like a broken record but it's very clear that a lot was taken from Black artists. And while this feels more like appreciation than imitation, idk if they've ever credited their sources (and I tried to check and do my research!) That being said there are definitely bangers. My Generation still holds up. Highlights: My Generation, Kids Are Alright, Much Too Much

Solid boomer rock with a few standout songs.

The kind of songs I’d sing 4 pegs down at a common friend’s party karaoke all dedicated to my beautiful wife whose embarrassed yet feeling loved Besides all the heartbreak songs of course Those are nice to hear in the bittersweet post breakup phases, when you recognise how good something you had to let go of was I quite like how their voice sounds The music may take some getting used to. But in the end, good music, not that deep, and fun

The Who: "Hope I die before I get old" Narrator: "They didn't"

The Beatles if they were good. Okay listening. 2.75, but rounding up to a 3.

Maybe it's because I've had a run of fairly middling albums, but this sort of passed me by. It's fine. A couple of decent songs and some middling covers.

A real cool band that wears its influences on its sleeve. I enjoyed a couple of these songs very much, like On my Mind and the Heatwave cover.

Musically solid, just missing a little extra "extra" High 3*/5

3/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/the-who/my-generation/ Completely understand why The Who is in this list, just not with this album. It’s okay, but there’s little setting it apart from the other r&b covering 60s bands. Singing on I’m A Man is just stupid.

Bons passages

Note: I listened to the original songs on the original album. In my opinion, the deluxe versions are not what I should be rating. The Who are without a doubt one of the greatest bands in rock history. My Generation is the band’s first release and it shows here. Two absolutely legendary songs and a lot of tracks that, while excellent songs in and of themselves, do not resonate as well. The Who were still finding their own unique style and would go on to make some of the most original and groundbreaking music of the era. But not quite yet. This is solid rock and roll, though, and certainly worth listening to. 3 stars ( My Generation and The Kids Are Alright are both 5 star songs and should be essential listening for everyone)

Celkom v pohode. Niektoré skladby patria medzi kultové, niektoré sú vata. Od the who som si svojho času urobil na cd vlastný výber piesní a to mi od nich stlačí.

I like this because it is not the Who going off with long guitar solos (except for the ox). It is just short sharp pop songs with a few soul influenced songs like I dont mind and Please Please Please. The best part of the album was definitely the mid section and standout track was Please Please Please. 3.5 stars (close to a 4)

“The Who Does Motown Doo-Wop w/ Rock Guitars” would have been a more apt title for this album. Everyone who has been paying attention to these album reviews knows I love rock and roll, but The Who are just not a band I can get into. Have tried multiple times, and my best friend’s favorite band is The Who, I just don’t enjoy their music. Other than the title track, this album is stuffed with mediocre songs that sound more like a Beach Boys rip-off act than anything special. This is run of the mill 60s rock; I’m going to be extra generous and give it a low 3/5 out of respect for their impact on the genre, but just know that they were thisclose to getting a 2.

Very early “pop” Who. Some classics. Some easily skipped.

standard Who album. This one lacks a bit of confidence that would later make and break the who

blue eyed soul

This isn't The Who at their best, it's them at the beginning, while they were still covering songs they didn't write and fitting in to the more pop sound of the 60's. Out In The Street is a pretty great opener, and of course My Generation is a banger, but there isn't a ton on here that I want to revisit. Their later stuff is glorious, the stuff of rock and roll legends, so it's interesting to hear where they started. Beyond that though this isn't that great. A bit of the great instrumentation that would come to define them in coming albums is present here but in the end they're still boys doing the equivalent of 60's garage band stuff. It's fine, but you could've left this out considering there are already more than a few Who albums on here.

My Generation, the debut album by The Who, is less about musical sophistication and more about raw energy and youthful defiance. Released in 1965, it stood apart from contemporaries like Rubber Soul or Out of Our Heads by stripping rock down to its most aggressive essentials. The title track, with its iconic line “Hope I die before I get old,” became a generational anthem, channeling frustration and rebellion rather than polished artistry

Some genuine awesome tunes here but not their best output as an album.

I want to love this but I'm not quite there.....3.5/5

important, but bolstered in reputation unfairly by being a white British band in the right place at the right time. really just a step between Little Richard / Chuck Berry and the more abrasive/less bluesy stuff that would come later. but it's a real fun step, yknow? has some great moments (The Ox bangs) even if it suffers from the filler-heavy tendency of its time. avoid the covers at all costs though. eugh! deserves to be one of the 1001? yes

Unremarkable.

Pretty good stuff, would listen again.

I like The Who. I enjoyed this album. I’d listen to it again.

too nauseatingly long. it’s overall a good vibey album, and there are some great songs. But the length of it makes it all blend together

Favorite track(s): The Good's Gone, My Generation, The Kids Are Alright, The Ox Heard before Previous rating: 7/10

I am ambivalent about the who, they have some great tunes but I can’t stand Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend is a nonce. Separating the art from the artists this album is decent, couple of stand out tracks, couple of good covers, nothing really let’s it down 3.3

familiar songs that helped define this era; sounded quite like the Rolling Stones then

Better than Coldplay

Get "Live at Leeds" or "Live at the Isle of Wight Festival" to truly experience the power of this band. Otherwise, this one is meh.

A great start for this band but sort of like the Beatles the later albums were the sweet spot

2.5/5 Middle of the road rock. Nothing bad about it, nothing amazing. If someone put this on to listen too, I wouldn't be mad, I'd tap along to a few songs but in a few hours I'd probably forget I'd heard it.

it has that song of the simpsons lol

I like this album in the sense that it made me go and listen to the most popular The Who tracks and I really enjoyed those. But this album you can tell is very old, it sounds good for the time it was recorded, but I found my self wanting to skipped a lot a the songs. But it was an interesting experience.

Out in the Street - 3/5 I Don't Mind - 3/5 The Good's Gone - 3/5 La-La-La Lies - 3/5 Much Too Much - 3/5 My Generation - 4.5/5 The Kids Are Alright - 3/5 Please, Please, Please - 2.5/5 It's Not True - 3/5 I'm a Man - 2.5/5 A Legal Matter - 3/5 The Ox - 4/5 Is it right be just properly whelmed by "generational" album, so to say? Of course My Generation is a hit for a reason and The Ox is a killer instrumental track, but the rest of the songs are either filler or pretty meh covers of already known blues or soul songs. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: My Generation, The Ox

Good jangly opener. First five songs are definitely feeling dated / 60's. The Good's Gone is simple, nice. My Generation and The Kids are Alright are classics. The whole first half of the album has that jangly feeling of The Who. Sort of bluesy, prog-rock. It's nice, but none of the screaming guitars of The Who of later years. The Ox is a cool driving instrumental in the middle / nice. Don't love Bald Headed Woman. Anytime you want me could be from a 50's radio show. Same with Shout and Shimmy. Motoring is a fun 60's jamming rocker. It's a good listen, very of the era / has a lot of Beatles elements which makes sense. Good record / definitely captures the time.

Pretty nice

Solid British Invasion pop with great singles (My Generation, The Kids Are Alright). Its good, but not amazing. 3/5.

Surprisingly ok.

This album is far from The Who's best. It's an unfocused approximation of what other artists were doing at the time. Rock and Roll thrice removed from it's African American roots.

An ok collection of proto-punky mod songs not too many highlights here. "The Kids are Alright" and the title track are great the rest kind of goes in one ear and out the other. Also La-La-La Lies seems really sexist and manipulative. Definetly the worst The Who album ive lisented to so far 6/10 Favourite: My Generation Least Favourite: La-La-La Lies

Half the album had me tapping my toes and impressed with the blues-y nature of the songs, and half of the album was annoying and sounded like the Beatles and Buddy Holly had a baby. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it - and I thought I was going to hate it. Sounds like a 3.

More variety than I expected

A little bluesy not my normal.

I had the Deluxe Edition of this at one time. I love The Who but I don't remember this album being this generic. 3 classics, a lot of fluff. 2.5/5, rounding up because of my affinity for this band.

The WHO have some good songs but I think they were more of a singles band.

Not as good as I had hoped.

Solid debut from The Who. Most of the songs were just alright, but the energy was there. Definitely sets up what’s to come. They had better songs outside of this album from the same time period so I was expecting more of that, but it’s still an okay listen.

pop de los 60, tipo beatles, un poco meh en general, animado, movido,

Good beginnings, but let's face it, there's only one memorable song to this day for a reason.

A fine album

This album has some bangers, but is very long. There are some songs that should have been cut. Overall, it is a good album.

Good. Not great.

This is quite good. Not really the call to action you'd expect from knowing the title track. Can do without the blues tribute tracks like Please, Please, Please and I'm A Man. 6.5 Fav track: The Kids Are Alright Least fav: Please, Please, Please

Favorite Track: My Generation

Fav: shout and shimmy 3/5

(4/7) some good ones but today feels a little "generic 60s"

I mean, even the band said it was rushed. This is an example of critics retroactively assigning meaning. Greatest my ass.

This was quite fun, trailed off a bit at the end

The Who, My Generation ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Album #9. This is a strong three, and it could easily become a four with repeated listens. Of all the British Invasion bands, I’m least familiar with The Who, so I was delighted when this came up. They’ve always been more of a singles band for me. This is some heavy shit, heavy even by today’s standards. I can’t imagine what people thought when it was released in 1965. 1965! I don’t really care for the soul and blues covers. I totally understand why they included them, paying homage to their influences and introducing them to a British audience, but on a modern listen I’d rather hear James Brown or Muddy Waters do these songs. That said, Nicky Hopkins is pure class on I’m a Man. I also think Daltrey sounds a bit awkward on the covers. Their original tracks are far more compelling. My Generation and The Kids Are Alright are iconic and rank among the best songs of the 60s. As a band, though, holy shit. They sound fully formed here on their debut album. Crashing, smashing drums, chunky bass lines, and frenetic, ahead of its time guitar work. It sounds incredible. However music was recorded back then, it just feels like you can’t recreate that sound today. It’s beautiful. The slightly weak link for me is Daltrey, who sounds like he’s still finding his voice on this record. Overall though, really enjoyable.

While I can appreciate the historical importance of this album, I was largely indifferent to it. Slight bump for being just over half an hour. Nothing worse than a mediocre album that overstays its welcome... as this experience has CLEARLY demonstrated time and time again.

This feels neutral. I’m not really upset about it. Also not excited about it.

The most vanilla album of vanilla albums. It's a perfect 3.

This is a worthwhile album from a historical perspective. Given that it's from 1965, an era dominated by innocent rock n' roll and blues covers, parts of it are extraordinarily abrasive, setting a template for metal, punk ... possibly even the Velvet Underground. As a record in its own right, it's less compelling in the modern age. There are a few standout tracks but stylistically it's all over the place, and some of the material is pretty cringeworthy.

Decent but inessential.

Not mad on it but title track is a classic

Very solid debut album!

While I am a fan and enjoyer of The Who, the two strong songs are not strong enough to carry the whole record in my personal opinion.
