Reviews (page 8 of 12)
This is the Who’s first album, which is pretty good for a debut. There are a couple singles from it that still are played regularly on the radio. The guitar parts are heavy for that period, and apparently set the stage for hard rock and heavy metal which emerged later.
This could be an 80s album cover! Kind of a boring album, though. I don't remember what I thought about the last Wholbum, even though we just had it, so maybe that's just their thing. It was, overall, fine. Highlights: 'La-La-La-Lies', 'Much Too Much', the fact that the dozens of takeoffs of 'The Kids Are Alright' all disagree with the central premise
Finally a good band to come out of the 60s. The Kids Are Alright my favorite. Inspiration for Offspring's song?
Not too enjoyable
This one doesn't usually make my regular The Who rounds, but goddamn, what a way to hit the music scene. Sure, it wasn't their best offering, but you can definitely hear the groundwork for what they were to become, and My Generation and The Kids Are Alright are going to get onto any greatest hits compilations that are legit. One of my favorite all-time bands, and it's fun to go back to the beginning.
The debut of The Who, My Generation is a fairly standard album from The Who. That said, it is interesting to hear the 'edge' to their sound forming, and moving into the direction of hard rock. "My Generation" is the standout track, but the "The Kids are Alright" and "I Don't Mind" also show some of the directions the band would take in later albums. Not their best album in my opinion but still solid.
again, not particularly compelled! but i didn’t dislike it, enjoyed the listen. it does rock pretty hard
The title track is the standout. The rest is pretty typical late 60s Brit rock. I supposed this being mid-60s shows that it was ahead of its time but only just. Good but unexceptional.
Solid and straightforward. I listened to the mono version, which isn't often these days.
Pretty good debut album from a group who would go on to greatness with later work. I personally like their later work rather than this, and it reminds me a ton of The Beatles where their early work was very pop rock and jingle jangle. Simple stuff to sell records. This album closes with The Ox, however and man, that is a jam! Way more blues-influence overall on this album than anything The Beatles were doing at this time. 3.08/5 stars
Was not expecting this album to be what it is. Couple of good songs, lot of different sounding Who songs. Not bad at all, just different.
J - 3/5 Best Track - "My Generation" F - DNL
A pretty good album, I liked Much Too Much, Please Please Please and It's Not True the most.
I like a couple songs, but it’s repetitive and I don’t love early rock
sympa
It's a perfectly fine album, was probably amazing in its time. I enjoyed my generation and it's not true. Lots of variety but mixed in with that quiet a few chaff songs. I think if I were to have listened to this album in a different setting I would have enjoyed it more. I'll probs register at some point but for now it's a 3.
Good
I get its significance in music history, but its fine. Nothing I'd like to hear again.
Yeah. Decent. Apparently you have to like Beatles or The Who. So far there’s more Beatles songs I dislike than The Who. I don’t mind was fantastic.
A pretty good album, a good introduction to The Who, but not their best work, nor is it something that everyone needs to listen to (unless your only knowledge of The Who is the theme songs of the CSI series of shows, they're capable of more than just Won't Get Fooled Again and Teenage Wasteland) Solid 3/5
1. My Generation 2. The Ox 3. The Kids Are Alright
I really wanna love The Who but I dont find the music very exciting, I love the individual performances but not the finished work.
7/10
I guess this was the sound of the times, beatlesy, rolling stonesy music with some who flavour sprinkled over it. It is ok but by no means as interesting as came later
Whilst the album title track is definitely the outstanding track on the album, it's The Who, one of the grandfathers of rock n roll, a mixture of popping classic rock, bluesy tunes and even a few slower acoustic tracks. Easily one of the most influential albums of its time - MTW Personally, I do think all MODS are pretentious and the music follows suit. However, a very iconic album that I did in fact NOT hate. Objectively too long but some okay tracks in there - HF x
always a fun musical era
It's surprising (to me at least) how poppy, Beatles-like and American early Who was. It's good, probably quite jmportant, but I'm not particularly excited by it.
i like the who when they're more rocking
Showed potential, and The Kids Are All Right is a definite stand out, but doesn't live up to their best
Reminded me a lot of The Beatles, not a bad album considering, but nothing special either
I liked it! Not my favorite, but I still enjoyed it!!!
Just mid sixties rock, nothing more. 3 stars
-woooww ok this really surpassed expectations for me, considering i was rather underwhelmed by Who’s Next. i liked this one way more honestly -i’d like to give this a relisten, it wasn’t perfect but could probably make its way up to 4 stars territory at least. soo fucking catchy -Favorites are Out In The Street, The Good’s Gone, My Generation, and The Ox
The debut album was...fine.. a bit all over the place, mostly generic 60's rock sound with a few flashes townshend and moon sprinkled in there to tease just who they would become, looking forward to later stuff more.
Good 60s album but nothing that really stuck for me
It's good but I prefer all of the five that followed it.
The Who are definitely a band that like The Stones suffer from greatest hits itis, this debut shows their blues pub rock style, and the Ox at the end shows Keith Moons ability to drive the band and cause chaos. Not as good as the later stuff
Before this album, all I knew of The Who was Pinball Wizard, My Generation and Pete Townshend's dubious legal defence. It was turns out that the Who (or at least their early years) is more pleasant than I had envisaged. It's a rockier sound than their Beatles contemporaries, and most of the songs hold up in terms of their instrumentation, vocals and overall sound. But the songwriting isn't so good. With only limited disrespect to Sir Richard, this is like a whole album of Ringo songs. And Ringo songs aren't bad, but I'm also going to tire of them before too long.
Meh/good
A couple bangers but not as good as their later stuff like who’s next and quadrohenia. Entwhistles bass is brilliant tho
This is well before The Who came into their own, this era sounds more or less like any other rock group of the 60's, maybe a little better
This album has a lot of energy but I guess I was expecting more from The Who. Really on one huge hit here, the title track. There are some other good deep tracks here, and the closer is a great drum-driven track. But not sure this stands up as well as their later albums. Kind of just shows them in their early development. 3/5
Pretty good but underwhelming for British Invasion
This is the fourth Who album I've gotten and it doesn't seem any more interesting than the others.
This did very little for me. Maybe it’s just overexposed and not remastered but the title track sounded stale. I know it’s influential and I had an ok time with it but just not feeling it. High 3.
Pretty solid record with strong, hard-hitting percussion. Some of the melodies and pieces of the production are a bit grating. “I Don’t Mind” is a heavenly song and the best I’ve ever heard from the Who.
La phrase finale, "Hope I die before I get old", est d'une violence symbolique inouïe.
This is still early for them, so they haven't quite hit their stride yet, but you can see it start with My Generation and The Ox. The Who are at their best when Keith Moon was let loose and drumming like Animal from The Muppets.
Pretty good! Not the best Who record, but for the era this must’ve felt pretty revolutionary. Good stuff.
För ehres erachte Albom esches aber eigentech no weld.

FACTORING IN THE FACT IT'S FROM 1965 - 60 YEARS AGO - IT'S NOT HALF BAD. NOT MY FAVORITE AND A LITTLE LONG LOL BUT ALL IN ALL THERE WAS A LOT WORSE MUSIC FROM THAT TIME PERIOD.
I enjoyed this but don't understand why it is a must listen to before you die. Beattles and the kinks did it better in this era. The who came into their own later in their career
Yeah look it was okay, i understand the importance of this record in the genre but the vocalist basically stealing blues vocal style put me off. Im sure it was edgy at the time and it still has good hooks but just whatever to me
My Generation serves as a musical insight into the life and times of 60s youth and a burgeoning UK invasion. This album has early forms of British mod rock mixed with bluesy tones, and some elements of hard rock that would define later punk movements. A fun and rebellious batch of tracks that define a generation in a fast-changing world. Fave Tracks: I Don't Mind, The Good's Gone, My Generation, The Kids Are Alright, It's Not True Worst Track: La-La-La Lies
I don't know how to feel about this. I really expect to enjoy this more not that it's bad. The songs range from great just ok and two I thought were bad. Still overall it's alright.
A nice debut album. They have the classic sound from the British Invasion, and there are some great tracks on this record. I think it is very inconsistent though, and there are quite some Beatles rip offs on it, but it's fine. I enjoyed listening to it quite a bit. This album also kind of bridges the gap between the classic sound of the British Invasion with bands like the Beatles, and the sound of The Who on records such as 'Who's Next'. There really are some glimpses of what's to come on this record.
Not exactly the most earth shattering, profound lyrics. Inoffensive to listen to but pretty unremarkable.
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: My Generation, The Kids Are Alright I don't yet have a ton of experience with The Who yet. This being their debut album, and smack dab right in the middle of the 60s, mind you, they are all over the place musically. There's a smattering of early 60s songs about girls and lovey-dovey shit (Much Too Much, Please Please Please) mixed in with late 60's psychedelic rock. Sometimes they sound like the early Beatles (La-La-La-Lies, The Kids Are Alright) , sometimes folksy Bob Dylan (The Good's Gone), sometimes they are going ape shit like in The Ox. Again, I don't have much experience with The Who, but i kind of seems like in later albums their "The Ox" won out and that's the direction they went with. 3
Early the who... not their best, but everything's already there: the voice, the nois, the anger. There are moments of innocent early beatles rock'n roll, even some blues, but when "people try to put us down" sounds, popular music is no longer what it used to be. The best song however still is "I can't explain" 3/5
lovely stuff
Super classic stuff, I just always find myself going back to the live performances of these songs (especially My Generation). They have such an energy to them that doesn’t translate as well in the studio recordings. At least that’s my preference!
A raw and rowdy debut, My Generation captures The Who still finding their footing, leaning heavily into a bluesy, garage-rock sound that mirrors the early Stones more than the sonic innovators they'd soon become. The production is rough around the edges—gritty, even—but there's a certain charm in the chaos. "The Good's Gone" pairs jangly guitar lines with a haunting vocal drone, while "My Generation" and "The Kids Are Alright" hint at the band's explosive potential and knack for teenage anthems. "A Legal Matter" delivers a power-pop punch, and "Much Too Much" surprises with verses that veer into Lou Reed territory. The sparks are there, but they’re still buried beneath distortion and derivative riffs—promise in search of polish.
The Who is just okay for me and this album sounded like Oldies.
Very much 60s rock, I can close my eyes and I'm at a backyard BBQ with all the dads vibing to this. Fine but not for me
This guy has a stuttering problem
1 banger, some decent stuff but nothing that'll make me super eager to return
It aight
The Who on the brink of coolness...
A bluesy, playful romp through history. Kinda funny to hear white people making black soul music, but I guess that's where rock n' roll came from - soul, gospel, rhythm & blues, and jazz. I like where they went from here more than where they were when this came out.
It was okay!
Good, not great--some of the less-played ones were better than the hits for my money.
It’s fine. It sounds nice. It’s rock music. I am underwhelmed. Honestly, I expected more. Lots of The Beatles influence in there. I think I’ll just listen to them, though. They get better, right?
Debut album by The Who. Great start to a career supplying soundtrack songs for CSI shows. Just kidding.
ok
Back when I was in college, I considered myself a fan of The Who, but I’ve never listened to this whole album before. This will be my fourth album of theirs to review, and I’m excited to listen to this debut. I’m more familiar with The Who’s later music, but I’m always down to listen to these gentlemen. My Generation isn’t going to dethrone Who’s Next as my favorite album by The Who, but I really enjoyed this glimpse into their early career. There’s a rawness and an edge to The Who’s sound that I enjoyed. The first side of the album was a bit hit-or-miss with me. I loved “The Good’s Gone” and the title track, but I really wasn’t into “I Don’t Mind,” “La-La-La Lies,” or “I Don’t Mind.” “The Good’s Gone” had some excellent guitar playing and drumming, and I enjoyed the drone of Roger Daltrey’s voice, which was really unexpected. “My Generation” is easily the best song on the album though. Everything absolutely clicks here: Daltrey’s vocal stutters, Entwistle’s bass line, Moon’s manic drumming, and Townsend’s guitar are all perfect here, and everyone gets a chance to shine. This song is quintessentially sixties to me, and I absolutely love it. “The Kids Are Alright” is fantastic too. I love how it manages to blend mod and blues sounds. I loved the piano playing on “It’s Not True,” and I wish there had been more piano playing included in this album. I really loved “A Legal Matter” too; the guitar hook in the intro was excellent, and the guitar and piano playing throughout the rest of the song were great as well. Overall, this album was pretty good, but some of the songs were duds to me. I think that if I had never heard The Stooges or The Sonics, I might have felt more favorable towards this album, but some of it just felt a bit bland to me. Even though some of this album wasn’t really in line with my tastes, I think it’s objectively good, and certainly a major influence on rock music.
It’s fine! Has some good songs! Enough of The Who, though!!
Pleasant but not rushing to listen again.
Contrary to everyone else on this website, I actually like all the British Rock. This was was just alright though
Looks like this was their debut album. Glad I was able to give it a listen.
Enjoyed The title song
3/5, pretty good but not amazing
3.5/5 My Generation and The Ox the two stand out tracks. The rest is enjoyable but forgettable
Boppy Dad rock. Good, not great.
Funny how I've listened to their hits my entire life, and based my expectations on that. in fact, I was sure that I had listened to this entire album at some point but I was wrong. This album has a lot more of a "60s popular music" sound than I expected. So much so, that sometimes they even sound like a Rolling Stones clone. But this all collapses into the accretion disk of the black hole that is My Generation, a song breaking so far afield of the standard 60's rock as to behave as a Singularity, opening up a new universe for rock, AND for this band to move on to craft their defining future sound. Genre impact: Huge Decade impact: High Absolute impact: Low Listenability: High Relistenability: Low (except My Generation: Very High)
A solid album that’s more of an amalgamation of other artists than a proper Who album. The title track and “The Ox” sound like a band confident in their own sound, but the rest, while good, is just an imitation.
I like a lot of The Who’s music, and really love a handful of their tunes. I think Pete Townshend is one of the best guitarists and songwriters in rock history. Love his voice, too. Roger, John, and their drummers and keyboardists, are all excellent. That being said, this is not an album I've listened to a lot. I do get its importance in rock history, and it has some fun mid-60’s “mod rock” songs, but overall I like their later stuff a lot better. 3⭐️
Perhaps it's unfair to judge them based on their debut when they were still in their Mod sound, but a lot of this album just doesnt "feel" like The Who to me. There's some songs that are definitely The Who, namely My Generation (and some even when they're still in their mod sound, like The Kids Are Alright and I Can't Explain, although the latter isn't on the original tracklist, so I won't grade the album with I Can't Explain included). Keith Moon isn't quite as manic and explosive as he will become a lot of the time. Feels like on some songs he's being handcuffed from doing what he wants to do, mainly because the music on this record wouldn't compliment his insane style. The music can be a bit too "pretty" or standard sounding compared to their monstrous dinosaur rock they'd develop later on. The covers don't feel quite right for them either, even though they were definitely influenced by those bands, it wouldn't really be indicative of their later sound. Overall, still a good album, but it mostly hints at what's to come, which is some of the best rock music ever produced and my favorite classic rock band. As a side note, Quadrophenia being left off this list is unforgivable.
Wow, early The Who! This is album is impressively long, and although it's great, it does get a bit monotonous. Generally enjoy the energy and playfulness. Learned that Roger and Pete are doing a farewell tour through North America this year, including a stop pretty close to me at Shoreline. Apparently they also played there 25 years ago*, which is still 35 years after My Generation came out. *: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWdtcXnRYbs
This album definitely feels like a time piece. I haven't listened to much of The Who's discography before this but I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted with the Blues tracks on this project. While most of the blues tracks were okay, most of the pop-rock tracks were a miss for me. Overall, this was an album with a little more hit than miss. Favourite Track(s): My Generation, I Don't Mind Least Favourite Track(s): Much Too Much
This feels so middle of the road. It's a good example of British rock from the era, but, honestly, there are so many examples of this on this list I don't know if we need this...
I kind of expected more from this album. It was good, but not great. 3*
This was much better than expected. I’ve never dug The Who and honestly, who (haha) knows why? This is a wonderful example of tuneful rock and roll and I bloody enjoyed it!
I enjoyed this album listen! I’d never listened to a full album by The Who so that was new for me. I liked this album but I wasn’t blown away by it. Overall, I’m glad I gave it a listen but I probably wouldn’t re-visit it.
Not as good as their later stuff, but it's pretty perfectly okay.
Favorite track: My Generation
I'm pretty tired of hearing the who now. I had to listen to this on Youtube so spotify stops thinking I love them. However, this was their best album on this list. Will I listen to again: 50%
Good album but nothing particularly groundbreaking or new here.
I liked it but wasn't able to place it's influence during its era
Fun. Beatles light
I have never heard this whole album before, it's pretty good but not what I was expecting. I can understand why people like them so much, there is some variety to the music and a lot of potential. This is an album I will definitely be listening to again although I'm not blown away.
They got around but that’s no reason to put them down.
It didn’t move me much. Only one playthrough. The title song with its cheeky stutter is infectious and deserving of its classic status. The Who has always been a band I feel I should know more from, a sort of pop culture failing to only know the radio hits. But maybe that’s enough for me after all.
Solid 60s rock album. I had never listened to a complete Who album before. Hoping there are a couple more to come.
Historic
The Who are amazing and this album has an all time great song , but let's be real they have 3 albums that put this to shame and a couple others that are better. This is my first who album on this list so maybe they are like David Bowie and this is the first album in a flood of who albums I'm going to see, but as a fan of The Who I just don't know how you justify putting this on the list as it is maybe their 5th or 6th best album. My generation is certainly an all time great rock song but the album is not that good. A lot of rock bands first albums have a raw feel that is missing in later more polished work like Tool's "Undertow" or Metallica's "Kill 'em All" that have an argument for them being the band's best work but here I think you are just looking at Pete Townsend not having entered his prime for songwriting.
My Generation by The Who is a somewhat underwhelming experience. The album sounds pretty generic all over, making me wonder why it made the list of 1001 albums to listen to before you die. While it has its moments, overall it feels bland and lacks the distinctive qualities that make an album truly memorable.
Competent but BORING. Two and one half stars
Greit
Ok
Not my generation, but ok.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS - # 31 My (oh) My Generation! Now we’re rockin’! A much more impressive sounding Who album than the highly overrated ‘Who’s Next’ that I first received from the band as part of this 1001 project. A stripped down pure garage rock track list, perhaps none too original for its time, however nevertheless very enjoyable with great tunes beyond the obvious standout. 🎧 Classic Track: My Generation 🎧 Hidden Gem: La-La-La Lies 🎧 Personal Favorite: A Legal Matter 🚫 Skip Track: I’m A Man Although a fairly solid debut album and one that I prefer over the band’s more acclaimed releases, it is stunted creatively with the multiple blues covers. 🖼️ Album Artwork: Prototypical band shot For a non-fan of The Who, this one is tolerable more so than most of their full catalogue. Perhaps they’ll grow on me as I understand there are a handful of their albums on this list to get through :s Hit the Thumbs Up icon below if you enjoyed my take on the album :)
Sounds super similar to the other brit rockers of the time. both a good and a bad thing i guess! but i enjoyed the steady beat and bass present in most of the tunes
Egg
The Who reminds me of a mix of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I only knew one song and the rest were not very high production.
Not one, but two James Brown covers? The audacity of these whiteboys. Where do they get their balls big enough?
If you told me this was the Beatles or the stones I’d believe you
Not my music
Rätt trist överlag, men räddas av några klassiker ändå. My Generation och The Kids Are Alright~
not really my cuppa tea
The 2 tracks that arev still played, and probably propelled the Who into fame are the most interesting. The others sound like any other number of bands of the time.
Great music great band
Not their best in my personal opinion, but decent enough...
fav cancion: i dont mind
Very good front to back with some classic songs
Kinda sounds like they don’t know if they want to be a blues or Merseybeat band. My Generation is the standout and sounds the most original. Jams The Ox rules
generally not a huge fan of British invasion stuff but this was ok.
Dare I say I find the Who overrated. Quel Horror
It was okay, not my kind of music but I can see the appeal
Liked My Generation and the last song on the album
I am a fan of the Who, but generally prefer their music of the 70’s. This album seemed to be a bit of an enigma to me…I thought some of the songs sounded a bit ahead of their time, some of them sounded stuck in the early 60’s, and some of them sounded like they did belong in 1965, the year that this album was released. One particular note, I chuckled to myself at the beginning of I’m a Man, because of what Roger Daltrey was trying to do with his voice…it really sounded contrived. Which is interesting, because I have always thought that he was really underrated as a vocalist. Generally I enjoyed this record, but didn’t love it and probably won’t listen to it again. This one comes in at three stars.
6. mid overall with one banger, a cool blues tune, and a nice outro song
29.3 fast alles gehört. Ein paar Lieder sehr nett.
Fond memories of hearing this on vinyl as a kid. This is about as 60's rock-'n-roll as it gets. There's a weird mix of teen angst and cocky charm, like this is what the Beatles might have sounded like if they got in a bar fight. The influence is palpable. It’s messy in places, but not in a bad way. A little chaotic, a little clean cut. It's like they knew the recipe, but wanted to take some risk. Vocals jump between crooner and cartoon. Sounds like they’re trying stuff out, which is kind of fun. Doesn't totally blow my mind, but I understand the importance of it. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - My Generation - The Kids Are Alright - A Legal Matter
Easy listening album, the songs are simple but good. It doesn’t blow you away but is a nice change of style from nowadays’ music. Favourite songs: - Out in the street - The good’s gone - My generation
I was initially tempted to rate this album 4 or 5 stars based on "My Generation" alone, because it's such an iconic, raw, s...st..stuttering masterpiece. However, I like to take the entire album into account, and most of the tracks display a band that's clearly still trying to discover who they are. It does capture The Who in their most raw, explosive form - just four young musicians out to prove something.
A little bit boring, but with occasional lovely moments. Kids Are Alright is nice, feels like it's by the Byrds. 3/3.5
I'm ambivalent about the who. I detested their rock opera phase, but this is just straight pop music. I enjoyed the energy and can see how it captured the zeitgeist at the time, but i dont think it has aged particularly well and just sounds a bit basic now.
Classic rock and roll. 27/03/25
There are some reasonable but throwaway tunes included; but the centrepiece is the incongruously superb duo of 'My Generation' and 'The Kids are Alright'. The album is sandwiched between two incredible singles, I Can't Explain and Substitute. Compared to these the album overall feels solid but sub par.
This was fine, nothing particularly noteworthy. Really neither here nor there
The Good: it is my generation! The Bad: if my generation is their generation! The Ugly: which is not my generation… and that is why there is stuttering on the record! Don’t know what to think, or say, about this record. It isn’t bad, but it isn’t my thing either. I do really like the song My Generation, so that’s a bonus… However, I am not the kind of person who’d listen to a The Who album over and over, so I will run of the mill them at 3*
Just like early Beatles this sounds extremely primitive, but you can start seeing some of the foundations being laid.
At first sounds boring and standard 60s rock. Not much to note until My Generation. Then I notice different influences more: surfer rock, rock and roll, ragtime pianos, funk, barbershop style vocal harmonies. Some good guitar work, reminiscent of the Shadows Best track - The Kids Are Alright
Why does the app link to the mono version? Super weird Anyway, this was alright. Please Please Please being my stand out
This album has some really good things and some really meh things. probably one of the most "all over the place" Who albums
The original tracks on here are mostly good high energy rock/pop songs, but the James Brown/Bo Diddley covers feel out of place to me. Keith Moon's drumming is the star of the show and the faster paced tracks show that off better. The title track is one of my all time favourites but I wish more of the album went in the same direction.
A bit like Led Zep I don’t really “get” The WHO. They have some great individual tunes but I found whole albums a bit much!
It was fine.
The original UK release ends with "The Ox"; therefore, my rating is based on this and not the Spotify version with 12 extra songs including "Can't Explain" which I can't explain why it was not included cause it's one of their bests. Some tracks on this debut are unrecognizable as the Who. Wasn't even sure if it was Daltrey singing on some of the bluesy, soul songs. A few covers of James Brown could be cut. "My Generation" is top track and still rocks today. The stutter is def a cool aspect. Not a bad debut from the brit boys but they certainly improve from here...2.58.
Only Who album I can bear.
Solid but actually pretty unremarkable and generic?
This feels like The Who trying to figure out who they are. I didn't expect the blues tracks. The stand-out standards are by far the best songs (My Generation, The Kids Are Alright) where you really see the direction they will eventually go. The rest is fine and you can hear Keith playing those drums which is what I need. Not my favourite though.
Solid 3.5 and I went back and forth between rounding up or down…landed on down.
fun album, sounds a lot like the beatles
March 5th 2025 - 7:43AM
2,6 Rock
it deleted all the shit i said but i didnt say much due to this album not being that much
The album is okay. This is before the signature sound of the band and is similar to a lot of British rock of that era. Some good songs, but outside of "My Generation" nothing is great. 3/5 Might listen again
Good album. Not what I expected from The Who. I rather enjoyed it though. It is interesting to see how much they changed from these early mono recordings. If not for the song "My Generation", I could have easily wonddered who this band was as the style of music goes from Blue to 60's Rock to hints of Hard Rock as we know it.
A few tracks on here that are ok, but not overly impressed. A band that flatters to deceive
3.5 - good debut album, nothing life changing
I've never been a fan of The Who, but I can appreciate their contribution to this era of music.
Some great tracks “the kids are alright” “my generation”. Some pleasant surprises “the ox”. But overall uneven.
i'm feeling a strong 3.5 with this one
I didn't really care for this album that much. There isn't much that particularly stands out other than My Generation. The next best songs are both James Brown covers. Out in the Street is probably my next favorite after that. The drums and singing are pretty standout on this album, but the rest was pretty standard. This group definitely gets better as they get more experience.
Before the grandiose ambitions. Enjoyable.
m-m-m-m-my generation
I used to really like The Who, this one is a classic for sure.
they very clearly came out of the beatles fandom and then i think after this sorta figured out how to do it their own way and were much better for it
In general I do like The Who, and I have to say that this album has a lot on it that I really like. I think more often than not the list adds the first album by a seminal band because hey, it’s so special, it’s the first one! I wouldn’t call this essential but it’s better than some of the other debut albums we’ve heard.
Nice. Jangly. Nothing special.
I was expecting so much more. This was fine, albeit a bit underwhelming.
Fine. The better who albums are live albums.
Feels very.... basic. Nothing really stands out to me. Not to say I didnt like it though.
made me think about legacies. out of all the who albums ive listened too, this ones probably the least interesting but the most tasteful, sonically speaking. it sucks btw
It's alright. There were a few good songs.
The Good's Gone is a cool laid-back track that seems 90s indie! Some tracks a bit sub-Rolling Stones and /or Beatles. Title track, especially bass, and album cover excellent. Didn't like James Brown cover, although guitar work is nice. Smatterings of interesting drumming - The Ox rocks pretty hard.
I like d it
Just when you’re thinking this could be by any generic 1960s British band, along comes a track that makes you realise why The Who were exciting.
This album was not quite what I was expecting. I hated all the blues covers, found the Kinks/Beatles type songs fun. Overall, not bad.
Greit
It’s ok but didn’t spark joy 3.1
The title track already is a song I find a bit overrated. The who as a whole are a bit like that to me though, I find them cool but I’ve never really went out of my way to listen to them. Especially for their deep cuts.I kinda feel the same with the stones but theres stuff I like more from them honestly. Like my point with the song my generation still stands but in the context of the album it’s almost thrilling. Honestly the blues cover I’m your man might be my favourite or the amazing instrumental the ox which I would’ve opened with instead of closed. the who just fail to excite me. 3/5
Way more pop oriented than I expected, very Catchy but can become a bit repetitive
This album, despite taking seven months to record, felt like it was recorded in a week with really lo-fi equipment. The songs are fine but don’t do much for me.
Just decent rock, nothing crazy
no es para mi
7/10
Good album. Live version is much better
Not the best rock album I heard. There are definitely better ones out there, but it was not the worst album.
It was ok... not much else to say really.
Good, but might also be superseded by time.
Really only know My Generation and The Kids Are Alright off this debut album for The Who. Out In The Street was a good opener, but honestly not much else stood out other than The Ox. This one lands squarely in the 3 territory.
Maximum Rock'n'Roll? Sure, here and there. The best tracks on here absolutely rule. I have to admit though, I was expecting to like this more. Guess I prefer 70s Who.
Some good songs, some very forgetable tunes. My generation is very imbalanced: whilst the first half is good the second half is sometimes dreadful, the feeling of an album is also not very present. However I did like the sharp guitarwork, which was impressive, especially considering the time. And the rythmic feel of the album in general was great. Overall a fine one time listen. Favorite track: My Generation. Overall score: 6.8/10
Tbh I expected more like My Generation and The Kids are Alright. The shorter, more repetitive ones weren’t my jam. 3.5/5.
Starts to sound samey and less interesting after a while. Probably a classic in its time, but feels like a classic I can be aware of and not necessarily engage with.
I definitely enjoyed this more than the whole album that was full of skits, but this was still pretty mediocre outside of a couple of good hits.
Some classic songs along with some not so classic songs
Good album. Garage rock sound which is the Who at their best. Rating it 5 out of 10
Has the issue where The Who hits are all 5s, but overall the album is just okay.
Wow. This was a very interesting listen for me. I love the Who, but I had not heard most of these songs. Listening to this it's interesting because there are 2 completely different sounds and I wonder (I didn't look) at the years of each song being written. The first half of the album (and some later) could literally be thrown into a giant barrel of every British Invasion song getting pooped out of England at the time and I don't think you could pick any of them out and say "yep that's the who". To me this is literally The Who before they had hair on their balls. SO much is missing. You get "some" glimpses of greatness that they were known for in My Generation (which obviously we all know) and I love The Kids are Alright. But outside of that - there is really nothing unique. It is very poorly produced and just a pile of bluesy 'stuff' turned into some British rock. Not a 'ton' going on here besides 2-3 songs that show future glimpses. I don't consider The Who to be a band I recall pushing out the 'blues' sound and most I know by them was always their own sound - but this is prior to that. You can hear a lot of blues in a lot of their songs like a lot of the British rock sound started at before it branched off. Weirdness here - Keith Moon playing like a normal drummer. Blech. What made Keith an absolute stand-out and SO unique in later years is instead of playing rhythm during the vocals and fill-ins between (like everyone else did), he actually played patterns and subtle fills DURING the melody of the vocals and would follow Roger's lyrics. If you listen to later years Who and remove vocal tracks you can actually know exactly what the lyrics/verses are JUST from the drums. It's the weirdest/coolest thing. He was very unique. But not yet here lol. He was an animal later years (and he thought so too since he enjoyed doing crazy shit like jumping off buildings and taking elephant tranquilizers for fun). Surprised he lived as long as he did wiht some of the stories lol. John Entwistle was a frickin' musical god. I put him in my top 5 of all time rock bass players. You can hear it in some of the later songs on this album and ESPECIALLY on My Generation where he is just all over the fretboard. He just stood on the side of the stage and was a non-showy genious. Do yourself a favor and go listen to some youtubes where they pull the bass tracks out of some of the later who songs. He was just SO good. Pete hadn't learned yet to not attempt to solo, because he's horrible at it lol. He was the definition of power chord rock guitarist and was just INSANE in later albums and especially on stage. This band later would define raw POWER especially live, but not yet on this album. I would consider them one of the few that had the sheer power of a band like Zeppelin at the time. They were extremely powerful. May have been because Pete probably sprinkled cocaine on his corn-flakes and was way over the top - but his energy was crazy and the hard rock chords were just awesome. Roger was such an incredible singer and you don't get to hear a lot of it on this album yet. The screams and raunchy strong voice isn't here yet. Overall it was a fun listen. Always interesting to hear a band before they really turn into what they become later - but not much on this album shines yet besides the couple I knew and I liked It's Not True and I think 1 other - they just don't sound like the Who I knew and loved in later years.
I liked The Ox and My Generation. Other than that not much special. Never really been into The Who
This was a fun listen. There were really no standouts, but it's undoubtedly an important album in music history
Classic rock album. Not really my things, few hits few misses, but the legacy of The Who truly can't be understated.
# Album Name: My Generation # Artist: The Who # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Wasnt bad. My generation is an absolute classic. But that was the only traffic for me. The rest were just alright. Not a fan of Townshend. # Top Tunes: My Generation # Would I listen to it again? mmmm mebbe.
rascal music
It's okay. Has a couple of hits I recognize. Never really followed The Who but would look into John Entwistle's music.
Just ok for me, not bad, but not too special either.
It was ok
My dad is a big Who fan. Me? Not so much. The James Brown cover is good but not as good as James Brown. My Generation is timeless. The rest is chaff.
A couple of classic tracks but they have better
Feels weird to give this a 3, but there isn’t much greatness here. You can hear where they’re going though
Not bad, heavy blues influence
Bon, correct.
As somebody who thought they were familiar with The Who, I've realized that I'm familiar with their later material. Despite the title track not sounding like the rest, the majority of the album fits right in with the music of this era. A sort of bridge from the 50s rock and roll/blues into the rock of the 70s. While this album isn't bad, nothing really stands out and it could be any other album from this era, without noticing a difference. It's hard to imagine how music changed so fast in this era. Jimi's Are You Experienced was only released 2 years after this, and Zeppelin I was 4 years after this. What a huge change in popular music.
This is one of my least favorite The Who albums. I think it is so so. I really wish it was another one.
I actually had a strong negative reaction to this album when I listened yesterday. I always thought I liked The Who but I guess I just like the older more refined Who? Who’s Next particularly. I listened to the stereo version which was pretty raw and grainy. Normally I would like that but instead I was having some weird sort of second hand embarrassment the whole time and I think it’s because of that Full House episode where Danny Tanner does this cover of My Generation. I really hated that. I’m giving it a 3 because I listened again today to a different version that was a little cleaner and I can appreciate the musical innovation that was happening there at the time. Breaking the instruments, using them in new ways and whatever else they were getting up to.
Some good songs, but a lot of similarities between them. Still good for early rock and debut album in that era.
Can definitely see why this is their debut album - it really feels like they're trying to find their footing. For me, so far, it is the weakest of their albums on this list. The drums are the highlight of the songs, but other than that, it is ok at best.
The titular sing is the standout here with the rest being very basic 60's pop rock. The other work listened to so far by the Who was more daring and had a more interesting sound. The drummer is still good though.
Pretty good/mid 60s rock record. 3/5.
It was fine
Reminds me a little of the early Beatles. Couple of good songs that forecast where they are going but otherwise not really fan of it. This is fine but definitely the best they have to offer, which the title track hinted at their potential
Not for me
This was fun! I love some of the songs and thinking about boomers being the hip generation in the past is kinda funny.
Their first album - think I prefer the later ones though.
I generally like The Who, and this contains "My Generation", which is an absolute classic. As an album it was solid, but nothing jumped out as super special.
3.5 There’s better Who albums but this is a good start
👍
Some nice tunes here that stand the test of time also some test don't but 59 years is a long time.
This album often doesn't sound like the title track. It does live up to the statement, however - this is the sound of The Who's generation. From R&B, soul, the early sound of James Brown, rock & roll and even the jangle of The Byrds, there's hardly a corner missed.
An absolute three-sterpiece.
yeah i mean pretty good
Sounds like rock music trying to figure out what it is (and isn't). Quite exciting but as an album quite uneven. I could have done with less blues-y influence and more punchy songs like My Generation.
The Who - My Generation Honestly, when I saw the name of this band, I thought that they were a psychedelic rock-type band, like Pink Floyd for instance. But instead, I basically got greeted with a more energetic and "in your face" type version of Elvis Preslesque songs (not complaining to be honest). I really love the drums and bass that go there, that would be pretty much the main highlights on this album, it's great! 1.- Out In the Street = 9/10 2.- I Don't Mind = 9/10 3.- The Good's Gone = 8/10 4.- La-La-La Lies = 7/10 5.- Much Too Much = 8/10 6.- My Generation = 9/10 7.- The Kids Are Alright = 8/10 8.- Please, Please, Please = 8/10 9.- It's Not True = 7/10 10.- I'm a Man = 6/10 11.- A Legal Matter = 7/10 12.- The Ox = 9/10 FINAL SCORE = 7.9/10
mediumly good album, not their best. I was not really transported by the songs
Alright.
i can see the roots of cool shit in this but i dont like it myself
A really solid debut album! It's definitely carried by My Generation, but there's a wide variety of styles and all of the songs are at least decent, most of them pretty good. I don't think it's a special album; it doesn't really stand out in any particular way, other than My Generation. Enjoyable, but, for me, on the fringes of top 1001ish albums all-time. Favorite Song(s): The Good's Gone, My Generation
Goeie 60's rock. Niets echt speciaal.
Didn’t need to stream this one (but I did) some good stuff on here but not sure if that’s just nostalgia for an old sound. Better than that Beatles shite.
Similar in musical style to other Pop/Rock/R&B albums of the era; contains covers of a Bo Diddley song and two James Brown songs, plus the song that defined a generation and was to become the sound of The Whom, namely "My Generation".
Very much a band finding their voice. Would have been revolutionary at the time but falls a bit flat in 2024. Some of the tracks are quite lazy blues / rnb numbers too
3
The album was way too long. The music was good, though they did sound more like the Beatles than Who at times.
okay. I was really expecting more from such a revered band but this was just kinda mid 1960's brit rock. Just whatever. Didn't really grab my attention at all. Kinda tuned most of it out to be honest. Last track was the best.
it's (of course) not as good as "tommy" and "who's next", but since it is their debut, it's alright. even keith, my imaginary friend who's a big who fan, agreees about that.
Never gave much thought to The Who. funny but the cover reminds me of the Beatles, and the music surprisingly is not very different. lol They're one of those bands that I know was all the rave at one point but don't really consider earth shattering. Hm I'm A Man is totally different than the rest. Straight up Blues. Probably my favorite so far. 3 stars
Yeah, it's ok, The Who was just never my favorite.
3+
Good, forgettable
What's better than one The Who album in a week? Two The Who albums in a week! My Generation is a super track, but also a meh album.
Geen slecht album ofzo, maar buiten My Generation en I Can't Explain zit er niet echt iets speciaals tussen. 2.8
Much like many of the classic rock bands of this era, the earlier stuff is a far cry of the music they would put out in the later 60's and early 70's. Many of the songs are simple, repetitive, and just about 'love'. A few good, more lyrically diverse songs with a good instrumental, unfortunately, it's few and far between.
Meh. It's alright
I can definitely see how My Generation left its mark on music, but maybe it was perfect for THAT generation – not so much for mine. Are there really four more albums by The Who on this list?! P.S. The Kids Are Alright sounds like a Beatles track.
This album was probably pretty out there in the decade it was released. It's an okay listen, but nothing that stands out to me, and I think they were all new to me.
Good early Who. Not their best, but its still good to listen to.
No sé
Decaffeinated sound although I like this style. Title track and a bonus track are my reasons to give this rating. Apparently The Who is one of those bands where only global hits are highlights (you can guess by looking at the streams of their songs in albums).
A very revolutionary and innovative album for the time, but compared to modern music it is just okay. The title track is fun, but everything else is kind of bland. I really didn't expect all of the Beatles-esque harmonies. Mid 3.
Solid white boy 60s rock. Not the best who tho, and I don’t even like them like I used to
There was more and better to come
It is impossible to ignore the impact of this record on rock music. Keith Moon's drumming is undeniable, as well as My Generation. The songwriting is another story. Some of the vocal melodies are pretty bland, the riffs are not all memorable and the rhythm section simply can't do all the heavy lifting.
Decent 1960s mod album, good singles but other than that I wasn't hooked. I'll try again in the future
Ok
I knew the popular tracks: My Generation and I Can't Explain. Those are good. I also liked The Kids Are Alright. The rest of the album is kind of filler. The sound varies from doo-wop to blues or borderline punk. Something about the drums is really interesting.
Half Beach Boys and half fuzzy blues rock. Mostly forgettable, except for a couple of noteworthy tracks
A grab bag of different genres that I tended to like most when aping Black blues musicians (Out in the Street, Please Please Please) vs the Monkees harmonies of songs like La La Lies and Kids are Alright. One song even brought Velvet Underground to mind, but couldn't really match their vibe. So...uneven? & perhaps the prototype for something, but not consistent enough to be sure just what.
Other than a great main song - My Generation - it's a quite weird album. Every song seems to be from a different genre, it's a big mix of styles, for the better or worse. Guys probably had a lot of fun making it, but I'm not so sure it's that listener-friendly. After listening to few record of the band I can say that I'm not really a big fan. Love few songs, but the rest is unremarkable.
ok
Ok. Not very interesting
No private session for Spotify. Of course I know "The Who" but never really listened to their stuff that isn't on the radio or intro for CSI shows. So I listened to a lot of bad attempt at blues, won't be listening again.
actually ended up liking this much more than their later albums! sure, you could say it's a little derivative for the time but it's much more fun and wat less overwrought than tommy or who's next. you either die the good who or live long enough to see yourself become the bad who
Generic rock album however loved the title track and the Ox
Vain My Generation ylittää oman sukupolvensa.
It feels way more recent than their time. But still a bit too mild for me
My Generation is a pretty good album. This album seems to take a lot of inspiration from The Beatles just like a lot of the other psychedelic rock bands from this time period did but this album sounds quite a bit better than all of the Beatles albums i have currently listened to since this sound just happens to click with me a decent bit more. I also like this more than the other Who album i did due to just having less iffy songs on it's track list. The recording quality is a bit off but other than that, this album is a solid one even if it isn't doing anything that revolutionary. Best Song: My Generation Worst Song: The Good's Gone
It's fine. Don't love the who.
3 just for My Generation. Can see where the evolution came from to get to their good stuff, but this wasn't that great.
"My Generation" is a blast. It's raw and rebellious and demands the volume to be cranked up. Keith Moon's 'No Rules' drumming is awesome. The title track is a classic. The album is rough around the edges, but it is an excellent debut album. 3.5 stars rounded down because of Roger Daltrey's LEGO-style haircut on the album cover. 3 stars
decent album, nothing special
Fine for what it is. Kind of like a more edgy beatles? A band that used to be a household name but has perhaps faded into the past a bit. Does sound a bit like a lot of other music from the time but that could mean they were that influential. Not my cup of tea but I can see how people would love this. 5/10
I realy loved the jazz and blues influences of the songs and also it has a very representative sound according of the decade it was realesed liked it c:
Man, it really is just the Beatles but worse, which I find to be a trend with these sixties releases. Totally fine, just not the Beatles. Like, I could just listen to the Beatles.
I think the way the who emphasize the “shiiioonnn” part of the word “generation” inspired Liam Gallagher’s entire singing style. I think I like 60s Who better than 70s who, but I don’t really like either that much
3.4. The standout song for me was The Good's Gone. You throw an overdriven guitar on that baby, and you got yourselves a hit. I searched for a cover but didn't find anything notable. My generation is obviously an all-timer. Some of the covers on the album fall flat
★★★½
enjoyed; will never listen again
Slightly odd mix of songs that feel disjointed. Some good moments though.
My Generation is kind of all over the place musically - some 50s bop, some Beatles-esque, some classic The Who. Just not very cohesive or memorable outside of the singles.
These early rock albums are always interesting to me. I have trouble imagining what it would have been like to hear this kind of music for the first time. I don't think this record is really anything spectacular but I think it was a good idea to include it on this list because it really does kind of show where rock music was going at the time. Just a few years after this you had the first Zeppelin album and this is certainly tame compared to that. But this is a good example of when these bands were trying to make harder and more aggressive sounding music. As for this record in isolation, it's just ok. The title track is obviously the standout. The rest really does just sound like standard British Invasion pop that is slightly leaning into the heavier realm. The Ox is great, though pretty much a Wipeout rip-off. I feel like I should like The Who more than I do but I just never really have. I think they are one of the bands where all of them are amazing at their respective instruments, but they just never really made a lot of music that wowed me. 2.5/5 but rounding up to 3 just for the title track.
