Reviews (page 11 of 14)

Pleasant and enjoyable

There's a give and take between iconic guitar-driven brilliance and pop bombast that doesn't really work for me, resulting in an uneven listening journey that occasionally soars but doesn't consistently maintain its altitude.

Et band jeg har hørt om men ikke på (unntatt Money for Nothing tror jeg) Og der var det enda en jeg hadde hørt ja... Walk of Life er jo gøy! De valgte riktig sang å avslutte med, hadde ikke hørt den før, men den var best på albumet!

point9.

Not as good as I remember. The 3-4 big hits then crap in the middle.

The hits are good, rest of the album is pretty boring by comparison tho

Very smooth, very nice. I can totally see people giving this higher but it’s just not my kinda music. May come back once in a blue moon but it’s not what I look for.

Didn't do a whole lot for me. Some good instrumentals throughout, but not enough to captivate me. A little repetitive as well, but not bad.

Walk of Life Money for Nothing So Far Away Brothers in Arms

This is definitely an album you should listen to before you die.

The guitar and bass rhythms are second to none on this album. So Far Away is the best track in my opinion

A bit all over the shop this. If only every song was as good as Money for Nothing.

its chill, i liked the vibes, wouldnt ever play it on my own but wouldnt be upset if someone else put it on. added "you latest trick" so my music due to copious sax. :fire:

These guys know how to groove. A cool kinda vibe in their rock, cool vocals

pretty easy-going album.

In an utterly predictable outcome, the heavy-handed 80s influence added absolutely nothing to the music and made most of the songs a complete drag. There are some interesting ideas and (of course) some fantastic guitar parts, even if they are sparsely populated throughout the album. 2.5/5.0: Mixed

what a disappointment. i went into this with high expectations only to be let down. great guitar work from mark knopfler can't save this album of boring b-sides. the only song on the album that i'd consider great is money for nothing which is about two minutes too long.

A couple of crackers but the rest is dull dad rock. CDs and MTV did them a great service here

Didn't hate this, a few decent singles across the album, a lot of placid guitary music.

Sometimes I’m unsure of what to make of these albums.. I’m missing some context maybe. But this is pretty good, went on a little long for me and songs like Walk of Life are pretty silly, if catchy. But yeah!! I dunno!

pretty chill and cool... ik luke loves these guys ... not exactly sure i get it

It was ok. I really like his voice but I’m not crazy about the music. It was kind of boring and I don’t really see myself listening to too many of these songs again. I don’t listen to them much but I do kind of feel like it was kind of progressive for them. There was a mix of like jazz and also rock with some nice guitar lines. Not very catchy which makes it kind of hard for me to listen to.

Enjoyed the music but struggled to connect with the lyrics. Solid album. Might be good for a road trip.

Built around a couple strong singles. A fun listen.

I liked the range of slow and more fun upbeat songs. Vocals weren’t standout

I quite like some of the songs on this album but absolutely despise Walk of Life, so it loses a star for that!

I was expecting an album of mostly songs like "Money For Nothing" which it turns out is a bit of an outlier on the album. I wouldn't say this album is all over the place, but it did have some surprises for me. Blues, pub-rock, some folk elements. A bit of it all. Singer kind of reminded me of Joe Strummer in his post-punk days. (word to the wise, when listening to and singing along with "Money For Nothing" you can drop the slur and use the word "Clampett" instead, like the Weird Al Satire "Money For Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies.")

I liked it more than I expected. The guitars were good and it was fun. But it did sound a little dated.

I enjoyed this album, especially "Walk of Life", but there were also some songs that I didn't really like so I don't see myself listening to this one a whole lot.

Great music. Didn't realise there was a couple of f- bombs in money 4 nothing

Good strong album from Dire Straits- I’ve always liked Money for Nothing, Sting’s intro iconic, remember it was one of those classic videos of the 80’s. Dad rock? Perhaps, but Dad Rock I can tolerate..in small dowses.

6.5/10

This was such a formative album for me, but at this distance, it rather recedes. The album cuts just aren't that good, and the production sounds a bit thin - it all isn't as good as Love over Gold and Making Movies.

I liked it. Some cool stuff. Listened a couple times

Money for Nothing, One World and Walk of Life are some of my favourite songs ✅Brothers in Arms and Latest Trick definitely are songs on this album😐 😬 Album overall? 7.8 out of 10

Solidly enjoyable.

It's mostly okay.

Some absolute bangers. Lots of moody, muddy whatever. Overall good

Pretty great guitar work. Money is for Nothing is the highlight and then it dries up. At the end they do a pretty cool Pink Floyd tribute. It's almost a 4 but the best song says F------ a bunch which makes me feel gross.

For me the biggest appeal of dire straits has always been Mark Knopflers insane guitar work. Nobody sounds like him or gets the tone he does, and that’s honestly what’s lacking in this album. It’s there but it’s not front and center like it is in their earlier work. This is fundamentally an 80s pop rock album that really doesn’t get anywhere close to displaying the virtuosity of the band. “Money for Nothing” and the last track aside, there isn’t any of that crazy solo genius that Knopfler is so good at. Sure there are solos but they could be played by any competent guitarist. And some of them just go on and on and on. For whatever reason I never listened to this the whole way through until now and it’s really a disappointment. It’s still totally listenable but Dire Straits is better than this.

This is fine classic rock. I was hoping for Money for Nothing so I could call Dom some choice words.

Really diverse album! Super talented.

Great guitar, really corny throughout. Over produced.

The album peaks early with Money for Nothing and Walk of Life. Seems to drop off after that.

Lotta filla

This hasn't aged well, and it has some obvious filler. "Love Over Gold" is the one you need to hear.

goes up and down for me but most of it is solid

Lots of odd vibe switches but I think the opening to Money for Nothing is arguably one of the coolest in all of rock - probably 3.5

This is a good album. I kinda turned my nose up at it at the time of release as it was overplayed everywhere. I'm a big DS fan and these are all good songs but it's not their best record. I can't bring myself to give it 4 stars but it's a solid 3.5

The zeitgeist is a funny beast sometimes. It can capture the absolute pinnacle of one's popularity and it can be either one or two things: it can be understandable or it can be perplexing. With Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms, it can be both. On what would be their penultimate album, Mark Knopfler and co. ride their wave as expertly as they could muster in a transformed landscape where you would need your TV to become noticed. While probably not their best album, it is very much the most famous and for good reason. Favorites: Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, Your Latest Trick, Ride Across the River, Brothers in Arms.

Boring radio music

faggot?! it was not bad otherwise

⭐⭐⭐ 6/10 I've got this album from my dad's vinyl collection. Listened to it a few times, I remember the first time listening to it thinking I had my vinyl player set up too slow for this record. I checked the vinyl, however to my surprise it was set up to the right speed. Money for Nothing and Walk of Life are impeccable songs. However the other songs on the album, though beautiful, are just too much soft slow rock for me.

Could make a really good action-comedy movie trailer with the first half of this album

I thought it fell off really hard in the back half.

3.5, it slaps but? if every song was like Brothers In Arms i would've loved it more

Good beginning and end but the middle was boring.

dad music

Pretty chill

Only vaguely familiar with dire straits coming in. Didn’t even realize they were British. Boy, this comes out of the gate sounding like a greatest hits album. What a start. The rest of the album is fine. Hard to say if this is a 3 or a 4 for me.

"So far away" is a good song, but is far out shadowed by the song after it. "Money for nothing" is a great, great song. Influential, and has a good message. It still holds up today, I feel. "Walk of life" is also a good song, and a good toned down one. "Your latest trick" has a great saxophone. But overall forgettable. "Why worry" isn't my style, it's too slow for me. But is a very clean song. I like the melody, as well. "Ride across the river" Far more gritty. A take on war and the pointlessness of it. I agree, but again the song simply isn't my taste. "The man's too strong" Again, not my taste. Too slow. "One world" Great, I like the far more upbeat and rock style. "Brothers in arms" Hate it.

Good album though nothing much stuck with me except money for nothing. Other songs are good but go on too long

Favourites: Money For Nothing, The Man's Too Strong, One World, Brothers In Arms (10/1001, 8th Aug. '25, 2229h.)

When it was fun it was fun, when it wasn’t it was boring if you know what i mean

Boring but well played

Has some bangers and some fillers. Pretty much all I gotta say, when it hits, IT HITS but then you got some songs that are just fine or not really worth the listen. Listen to this album like 3 times and all i can say is I enjoyed it but really wanted to love it. 3/5

Sounding so dated

high 3! i liked this i had a lot of fun, didn’t love the f slur, gonna be real

A good example of 'Dad rock' covering a wide span of genres and soundscapes. Knopfler's playing is subtly brilliant. Some flack towards the end though. Easy to listen to but wouldn't rush back. Best Tracks: - Money For Nothing - Walk Of Life - Brothers In Arms Worst Tracks: - One World Rating: 6.5/10

not a fan, but the singles are fine.

3 good songs that's it

I mean it's alright. I wouldn't say it's a complete letdown anyways, it IS a product of it's time for certain however.

Fav song: Why Worry? Great guitar work and fantastic tones on this one. Some of the songs go on a little bit too long and are a little bit dated with their choices of instruments/production styles. But either way, great writing and performances all round. Money For Nothing's random out of pocket homophobic slurs really took me off-guard though, and I get that it's written from the point of view of an ignorant scumbag but it still surprised me!

Not the best Dire Straits album, but still good. Very clean. Some of the slow songs on the second side are less enjoyable

Good stuff, kinda forgot I was listening to it a few times, however. I liked the opening and closing tracks the most, and Walk Of Life because that’s a great song. 3.5 out of 5.

This was pretty cool, good energy, but got a little samey for me in the latter half. 3 stars.

This is a very good album. This is my review. The highs are so high.

money for nothing through your latest trick is fun and deserves praise but overall not an album I'd revisit too often. I was impressed and surprised how they somehow were able to fit in proj rock, pop, folk, and almost bluesy tones into one album

Loses steam after Walk of Life

3.5★. Really good. Will revisit.

This was one of thise albums I was hoping or sure I was going to LOVE because the songs I was already familiar with I really like. But unfortunately the songs I was not familiar with didn't measure up to the radio singles. Some songs even reminded me of cheesey late 80s transition music from a show based in FLA on USA Network.

Pretty good album. Not something I'd listen to too often but I might play it in the car from time to time. Walk of Life slaps.

This was really uneven. A couple great songs, but more blah than wow. 3.

It was fine. I think I would have enjoyed this album much more if there were no keyboards. I find keyboards kills most music for me. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

oh, dear old mark knopfler. some pretty damned "rockers" seems to run around popular band's fandoms (like coldplay) making chaos using "money for nothing" as a boring phrase to ridicule their commercialisation, but that's horrible and non-respectable. and its all because they are famous and rich, and those guys tries to prove that they have awesome music taste by rejecting popular and mainstream stuff. all a bunch of shit. also, the album sounds ok. "money for nothing" actually sounds good and has a awesome riff, but mark didnt write a clear melody line, making it bit boring. 3/5

Killer single, rather filler album

Most of these songs go on too long - the LP version might actually be superior from that perspective, honestly - but there are some undeniably gems here. I wouldn't say it's as good as the British apparently think it is, but it's a real solid rocker.

Alright, I've got to admit, I was wrong. I have a pretty large bias against Dire Straits, probably because they just seem the ultimate band for middle-aged, middle-class men living dull lives and whose greatest hobby it is to say "they don't make 'em like they used to anymore". But you know what - this one's actually pretty good. I'm sorry for ever doubting you, mr. Knopfler. You're not just a gifted guitarist making the most milquetoast rock music on earth; you've proven here that you're actually capable of crafting songs which are not only accessible to everyone ever, but also pretty good. And even if that music may not be exactly to my tastes, it is still a feat to be respected.

Album divertido, bien producido, me gustaron la mayoria de canciones y las que no todavia le parece que suenan bien, solo no me encantaron. Total del Album: 74

Ei Straitsien paras levy. Money for Nothing on toki hyvä raita, mutta muuten jää hieman tasapaksuksi.

Seems like something Dad would like

Major nostalgia value on this one, but that only goes so far... I was reminded about Walk of Life and added it to my guilty pleasures playlist. Fun listen, but not great.

Of its time production-wise, but has a couple of catchy hooks on the songs and solid musicianship. Highlights: "So Far Away" (sets a mood, though I'm a bit surprised it's the opener), "Walk of Life" (synth riff and woo hoos are memorable), "Why Worry" (mellow ballad with a long guitar intro), "The Man's Too Strong" (strummy midtempo folk influenced tune) Notable: "Your Latest Trick" (features that mid 80s staple the sexy sax), "Ride Across the River" (sounds like solo Sting...more sexy sax)

Had heard some of the bigger songs before. Overall good for an 80s album

This was OK. I genuinely don't understand how this is a top selling album of all time...unless everyone liked the first 3 songs enough to get the CD. The vibe is so laid back and self-assured...it makes complete sense this is his 5th album. Zero percent surprised this was recorded in Montserrat...this is exactly the kind of album you record when you're already successful, in the middle of the 80s, on a Caribbean island. Back half of the album definitely drags. I'd happily listen to a greatest hits Dire Straits album because he's got 10 good songs...there just aren't a ton on this album

Only recently started listening to Dire Straits. A friend shared a video of a performance from 1979 and it’s pretty sick. Simple arrangements with Mark Knopfler grooving/shredding and stealing the show. This album feels over produced to me and a little disjointed. Money for Nothing is a great song, 10/10 and I liked the first few tracks a lot. Feels like karma, bashing the White Stripes for being too bare bones, immediately getting hit with this.

Good, but not their best. Still beats many to the table.

Good not great

Enjoyable but unremarkable

80s dad rock that doesn't suffer from overplay like some of its contemporaries. A little boring but not bad.

Money for Nothing gets this an automatic 3 stars but beyond that, it's a bit boring. Knopfler's guitar work is obviously great but the songs themselves aren't that interesting on the whole. It's all a bit limp.

This is way more cheesy 80s jazz than I signed up for. I mean there was a complete night and day difference between the first three songs and everything else. At first I was like, "I can dig this," but the second that godforsaken fourth song started playing I was wondering what I was doing with my life. The fifth and sixth songs were even worse. It got a little better by the time 'Brothers in Arms' came around. 45 minutes later.

Classic Dire Straits

Starts strong but meanders in the middle. Enjoyable but I would not return often I believe.

The hits are good, the rest of the album is samey.

- I'm at a place in my life where I hear a band or an artist from the 80's say "f*ggot" and I hear the vine boom sound affect go off in my head right after. - "Walk This Line" might be one of my least favorite songs ever. I'm sure Dire Straits secured generational wealth with how overplayed the song is. 1001 troll recommendations. - first impression overall: Back loaded album.

It was hard to ignore this album when it first came out, especially as my dad loved it and he was one for playing things regularly. Today was the first time I've listened to it without my dad in the room. It could have been an emotional moment except for, in these modern civilised times, the use of the word 'faggot' in 'Money for Nothing' I'd forgotten about that. On the whole it's a quality album and deserves all the praise it has had over the years.

I understand why people like this album, but it faded into the background a bit too much at times for me.

I heard the first three songs too often in the 80s, so I'm bored of them. However, the rest of the album reminds me of the smooth, jazzy vibe of Dire Straits and how I love them. I'll need to make a playlist, but this album isn't exceptional. 3.5/5

Not a huge fan of these, but I shall give it a chance. Having given it a fair listen it really doesn't do much for me. I can understand to an extent the popularity of this album. Mark Knopfler is a good guitarist and they had a couple of music videos that got a lot of rotation on MTV back in the day. Having said that, it's still not my cup of tea. It's got a very 80's sound that hasn't really aged well.

Ok-ish.

Pretty classic.

Great background music. Lyrics and vocals are Nob-Dylan like. Honestly this album would be a 4/5 if they just never sang. 3.5

I honestly thought Dire Straits were American-based until right now. Listened to them a bit throughout childhood and never paid any mind to the fact that they weren't American. Not to be considered a slight to the group, as this is one of the most American sounding records I've heard (save for Bruce Springsteen). "Walk of Life" is one of my favorite rock songs, and it's not even one that many would think was recorded in the 80's with how the guitars sound. The synth probably gives it away though. "Money For Nothing" is obviously iconic in its own right, mainly for reasons related to the music video medium. The song itself didn't particularly age well though, which kind of caught me by surprise. The rest of the album, particularly side B, jumps around different musical moods a bit. More atmospheric and melancholic than I was expecting at points. A decent album overall, probably carried a bit by the singles.

Ok. Didn’t really flow for me and a lot of the songs felt overlong.

Brothers in Arms is the fifth studio album by Dire Straits, originally released in 1985. This may be the most dad-rock album ever. I enjoyed their record "Sultans of Swing", but this is just too smooth for me. The singles are smash hits, particularly "Money For Nothing". I believe this was one of the first CDs to release. That probably inflated sales a bit. It might've also been one of the first albums to be fully digitally-recorded. And man, does that show. It has not aged well. Sounds firmly like 1985. Knopfler is a beast on this album tho. Fantastic guitar work. If I was a dad in the 80s I probably would love this.

Classic

This is a tough one. Hugely popular, extremely influential. But it has not aged well, both because of the slurs in Money For Nothing and the sound in general. If feels very of its time rather than timeless

I really liked Walk of Life and Why Worry, but otherwise was OK and didn’t do too much for me.

according to wikipedia, the vinyl version has “trimmed the fat” from the version on the CD… same amount of songs, but some were edited for length. and many of the songs needed to be as they were meandering and redundant. case in point: on “money for nothing” if you listen to the CD version, sting rambles on and on about wanting his MTV for over a MINUTE AND A HALF before the iconic riff kicks in. having said all of that, the musicianship is top notch and the band creates a lush and diverse atmosphere of sound that is impossible to ignore. all in all, a fun listen. but trust me, stick with the vinyl version. highlights: “so far away” “walk of life”

This started HOT and then fizzled pretty quickly.

There were some really iconic guitars in this album. But it also had some really boring trumpet songs. Liked the iconic parts, but for me it didn't hold together as an album.

The first three songs are pretty good. And then it dies.

Not bad.

I thought it was okay. I didn’t hate anything, and some parts I thought were nice. I liked it more than I didn’t, so 3/5

The hits are obviously great, but there’s just too many mellow tracks for me. I can’t deny Mark Knopfler’s incredible guitar playing though.

Hmm - There are three good songs in the beginning of the album and then the rest is just not very interesting. One World is okay though and the title track is actually pretty great also

I know So Far Way, Walk of Life and Money for Nothing of course. That's a pretty iconic song, and I remember the video and Weird Al parody. I really dislike Walk of Life though. Money for Nothing is great Your Latest Trick is really sappy and most of Why Worry was too. Why Worry was really boring until the last few minutes and it's a pretty chill vibe for this morning. Around the 6 min mark though. Ride Across the River is pretty cool, I like the guitar in that song and the guitar in One World. Overall a 3 probably but Money for Nothing holds this album up. I keep thinking I'm listening to Steely Dan, which I did enjoy listening to when one of their albums came up. I was hoping this album had Sultans of Swing, which is a really great song, but no.

Money for Nothing is still a classic. It's a bit of an outlier, though, in that it's the most energetic song on the album. The whole thing is competent, but most of the album is pretty boring. Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist and he does some interesting stuff, but it's not enough to make me want to listen to this album again. Musicianship: 5, interest: 1.5. Overall: 3 stars.

This was a really, really big album when it came out but in retrospect after the third tune it falls off a steep cliff. Also, the production is peak 80s and not in a good way - fake reverb on the drums, shitty keyboard tones, etc. But ultimately have to respect Money For Nothing and you have to respect Knopfler's guitar. You have to!

Radio-friendly Unit Shifter

Starts really strong but falls off. Mostly filler by the end. Only just a three.

ah, so they're a singles band

I'm honestly not enjoying this album that much 3/5?

3.5 a few great songs and and a couple that went on too long

Very pleasant pub rock

Feel like I’m supposed to like Dire Straits, great guitar playing, great sound and production. Alas, their music doesn’t hit with me. Plus I heard Money for Nothing ad nauseam in the mid-80’s. Hard to give it 2 stars due to my fast being a bit different.

The first word that comes to mind for this album is “moody”. I’m not sure exactly what the mood is but Dire Straits sets it very effectively. I think the opening track and “Money For Nothing” are actually the weakest parts of this album. “Walk of Life” feels a bit out of place here — it is jauntier and more playful than any of the other 51 minutes of the album — but it’s such a great track I don’t mind. The middle of the album is the strongest part for me. The horns on “Your Latest Trick” sizzle and simmer, followed by the sprawling “Why Worry” with its meditations on the ups and downs of life are, to my ears, the sonic and emotional heart of this album. The title track is a very nice ending. While some tracks on this album are a 8.5 or 9 out of 10, it unfortunately is a bit less than the sum of its parts for me. 7.5/10

This started so well, but then turned into something different that was not great.

This was quite a nice album. I was only familiar with a few songs by Dire Straits, and it turns out they were all from this album.

Fun listen, but not a great composition

3/5. This is a great sounding album, each instrument feels like it is at the forefront without overcrowding others. However, I think this album is a little overrated. There are songs on here that have recognizable and repeating motifs but I think they do not do the song good and make them seem more pretentious. The piano lick in Why Worry and the saxophone in Your Latest Trick are good examples on this. Sure they are unique but very quickly they become annoying. Most of the other songs are not great. There are some bangers on here and they save the album a little but definitely not one I would recommend. Best Song: Money For Nothing, Brothers In Arms, The Man's Too Strong

wait a second this is actually kinda good…i remember listening to this album a couple years ago cos i put the title track on a playlist i made about the terror lol and i was thoroughly unimpressed by the whole outfit but now i’m thinking it’s alright…i think it’s maybe because the 80s schmaltz element (inescapable) has a distinctly springsteenian dimension (see: “walk of life,” which sounds like it could have easily been a bruce song) and is therefore more bearable to me. money for nothing is a good song but i do wish he didn’t say the F word in it. EVEN THOUGH I UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT. i guess the takeaway here is #notall80smusic fav tracks: why worry; the man’s too strong [which i added to my kendall roy fanmix]; one world

i liked it but i don't really have any strong feelings about it. i love the song sultans of swing and was hoping something would give it a run for its money but none of these were as good :(

Meme music

some absolute bangers in the beginning but the slow tracks were too long and i got bored

Dire Straits always sounds like they're goofing around but in a really smart way. Super talented. Unique sound.

The popular songs are really good, but the album as a whole felt unbalanced.

Pretty good. The hits were solid, I liked the longer, instrumental songs mixed in. I may go back occasionally for the vibes, but just o.k. overall. 3/5

I knew the two popular tracks: Money for Nothing and Walk Of Life. I associate both very strongly with the heyday of early Mtv, when music videos were a big deal. I think Walk of Life was how I learned the concept of sports bloopers. The rest of the album is OK but nothing stands out too much (the title track almost rises). The album is more world-sound and 80's than I anticipated.

Money For Nothing is a pretty good song, especially how the intro transitions into the main song. A lot of the songs have great intros. Especially Your Latest Trick. Overall I’m not a huge fan of his voice and his intonations. The songs would make for great instrumentals, and probably good backings for metal ballads

Some classics in there

A strong first side and closer, that’s slightly let down by an unmemorable run on the second half. Brothers in Arms is kinda fascinating in the same way that Appetite For Destruction is, the big songs are so big and so good that they’ve forever cemented the artists place in popular culture, despite a large chink of the rest of the album being ignorable at best. It’s the opposite of what I was talking about with R.E.M.’s Document a few days ago, which is an album that’s all good throughout if overshadowed by the success of it’s singles. Document would have still been well received if The One I Love and It’s The End Of The World As We Know It had been left off. Without Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life and the title track, Brothers In Arms wouldn’t be on this list. And it’s all because the rest of the songs don’t have that X factor, whatever it is. They’re fine, but they’re deep cuts. And the deep cuts on other albums are just better

Rating: 6/10 The first three songs are fantastic, everything else is quite boring. Choice cuts: So Far Away, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life

Nothing about this strikes me as lyrically impressive. I feel like I'm missing the cultural background for it to be relevant for me.

The tracks here - than the Standouts of Money for Nothing and Brothers In Arms - grow on you after a few listens but it still wouldn't be regular rotation (Your Latest Trick excepted).

I haven’t listened to this album from start to finish in quite awhile. Brothers in Arms can be broken up into 3 categories: the bangers, the mid card and the forgettable. The guitar work throughout is awesome. Vocals sound like a Wilbury that may have taken a side trip (which I wholeheartedly approve!) I will probably throw the big hits on playlists, but the rest can wait to be used in a movie soundtrack somewhere down the line. High 3 (mostly for overall replayability)

It was fine.

More overplayed 80s/90s FM Pop music but Knopfler is a guitar god , 3 stars

Has potential

Hate the voice, love the musicality.

Pretty nice. The guitar work is definitely the highlight

Well, one thing I can take away from this album is that in a rare case the extended (normal) version of Money for Nothing is actually better than the radio edit, as the additional lyrics and longer outro allows the song to feel far less repetitive. Otherwise, this album feels exactly like what being middle-aged in the 80s probably felt like. It's got some good tracks, but it feels like driving on dirt roads alone whether it be day or night, having good moments and bad moments, and overall being a solid enough life, but overall insignificant. That may seem a little harsh, but save for some of the songs playing in every fast food joint across America, this album feels like a time capsule of music that just isn't all that intriguing right now. I like the droning feel of the B-side, and the hits are catchy, but nothing here is impactful, and I can't justify giving it higher than a middling score.

The first three tracks are incredible, but that's no surprise to anyone. I do like the rest of the album, but admittedly it's a bit of a drag to get through. It's almost like they used up all their energy in the first three songs.

I've been on the fence about Dire Straits for a long time. There are definitely songs that I love, and I love to hear Knopfler's guitar. That said, other than the first three tracks, I don't clikc with this album. "Your Latest" sounds like a 70s TV show theme song. "Why Worry" was frustrating because it should be a cool jam/outro, but they never hit it! They just keep repeating. Perfect opportunity for Knopfler to take flight and soar over this. He doesn't start noodling until there's less than a minute in the track which is disappointing. I'm realizing this is something I don't love about Dire Straits. Their use of space. They leave too much space where there is nothing really happening for long periods. This track has a very cool, ethereal sound and they just don't do anything with it. Knopfler walks the fence on old folk songs a lot too, and he is what he is but it's disappointing. On "One World", a weird disco-through-Dire Straits-lens tune, we finally hear Knopfler's guitar start to take center stage for the first time since early in the album, but it's just for a minute and he's still holding back. I don't think I've ever come across someone so talented who can just keep it in his pocket 98% of the time. I understand that's his choice as an artist, and he often focuses on subtlety, but it makes it kind of a disappointing experience.

Came in hot but cooled down a lot

uneven. when it’s good, it’s great.

It's a vibe and has a nice lead guitar but nothing I'd come back to myself. But if I caught a song on the radio I'd be happy to listen to it and know which album it's from now :)

It's a soft and smooth rock album, one that rolls and grooves. Still, there's something that's missing with Dire Straits and why I don't listen to them that often.

fine i guess, some known songs, slur jumpscare???

Apart from the hits it was middling.

3.5/5 stars

Product of its time

Way back on album #5 on this list I got Dire Straits' self-titled debut and really enjoyed it a lot. This is Dire Straits' fifth album released seven years later, and the sound is pretty notably different. If the last album represented a late '70s slower bluesy-folky rock, this one has definitely jumped firm into the '80s pop-rock sound. It's much more fast paced, much more "pop", much more synth-heavy. There's some jazzy instrumentation at times ("Your Latest Trick"). It's a lot more dynamic overall. Unfortunately, I think I like it less. I actually went back and listened to "Dire Straits" since it's been over a year now, and something about the understated-ness of that album works more for me. I can't fault artists for having a changing sound and trying to have commercial appeal, but this feels almost like a sell-out to me. To be clear, I didn't totally dislike this. There are some really catchy hooks, particularly on the front side of the album. I really like "Walk Of Life" a lot, it's my favorite song on here by quite a bit. Both "Your Latest Trick" and "Why Worry?" are nice little slow ballads that do call back to the debut album a bit more. It's not bad, I just rarely felt that invested in this. The critical reception of this seems to be all over the board. It seems to be their biggest commercial success, and 1a and 1b with the self-titled album for critical interest. This is one of the best-selling albums ever in both the UK and Australia, but it does seem like the initial reception wasn't great though, and I'm wondering if it just felt a bit forced until the commercial success kicked in. I don't know, I can't quite put my finger on what I don't like, but I was really excited to listen to this when it popped up, and left pretty disappointed. Perfectly fine, but a little undeserving of the massive hype to me. Two other side notes. One, the repeated use of a homophobic slur on "Money For Nothing" is really jarring to hear today. It seems like the general consensus is that its use in the song is by an intentionally-shitty narrator so not meant to glorify that position, but it still caused a lot of controversy over the years, and just sounds so harsh to hear today. It definitely took me out of the moment a bit on one of their more well-known songs. Second (and much less important), I really liked their debut's album cover, but this one is really bad to me. Super cheesy and ugly, it's giving "graphic design is my passion" vibes. Very weak. Favorite: Walk Of Life Other: So Far Away, Money For Nothing, Your Latest Trick, Why Worry?, The Man's Too Strong, Brothers in Arms 7/27/24

Actually listened to this one twice to see if I had missed something the first time. It's clearly objectively good and well written, but for some reason it left me cold, even Money for Nothing. I definitely think the vocal performance is a weak point, I struggled to connect with the lyrics.

It's quite hard to rate something you know very well by osmosis. This album is everywhere. The anticipation of the start of Money for Nothing is rivalled nowhere else. I like the rest, but not something I'll return to for more than kitchen songs

#293. This album starts off strong, but the B side is significantly less interesting. Good enough overall though. 3/5: acceptable

Best off just playing the first 3 songs on a loop, falls off a cliff after that. Money for nothing is a great song though and I can’t think of too many better band names than “Dire Straits”

3.5 I think this was the first CD my dad ever got when he bought the CD player. I thought I was more familiar with the album than I was, I must have been skipping the slower songs back in the day. My tastes haven't changed much apparently.

I think this a good album and there are a few truly great songs on here, but I actually prefer the first Dire Straights album to this one..

Even my goth friend has a copy of this one. Can't deny the songwriting & guitar playing. Also I feel like "Money For Nothing" should be appreciated for the scathing diss track towards the blue collar bullies they clearly wanted to be embraced by, sarcastically taking their power back as artists and musicians. I think what's interesting in revisiting this album is how, while their work is strong overall, their deeper cuts are completely overshadowed by their singles. The sheer catchiness and boldness of absolutely SICK riffs like Money For Nothing leave the other noteworthy tracks fighting for impact. They're literally howling like wolves over the top of that track, it's like they threw everything they had at that, Walk of Life, & So Far Away. A bit unbalanced, but great work overall. Next time I listen I'll just skip the first 3 tracks for a different dimension on the Dire ones.

Walk of life is a banger. White man grumbling about something kind of music. Well recorded but forgettable songs. 6/10

Though I recognize Mark Knopfler's majestic guitar skills, I've never understood the whole Dire Straits thing.

see the little fella with the earring and the makeup

✅✅ I wouldn't have told you before today that I knew who Dire Straits was, but I knew a ton of songs from this album before I listened to it today. It's good stuff, the album is paced well and while I only listened to the remaster, the production works well for the sound. Might revisit pieces

I’ve rarely heard an album where the 3 biggest tracks start off 1,2,3 but this does it. My old motto when CD’s were a thing was the rule of 3. If I liked 3 songs off of an album I would buy it. This makes the cut. Well produced, everything comes off as the perfect pitch and tone and compliment each other perfectly. But it drops off after the big 3. There are splashes of Bob Dylan, Chris DeBerg, Toto and 80’s soft core porn music. To be fair, I could barely make it through the full songs. I am not calling this album terrible though, it’s just not for me Choice Cut: So Far Away

This album fell off a cliff after an insanely strong start. Hard to find a better first three songs on any record, but then suddenly turns into super boring soft rock. Absolute shame.

Money For Nothing // Walk Of Life // The Man’s Too Strong // Brothers In Arms //

Mixed for me. I liked the first 3 songs then I lost interest. The last song was ok. I don't think i'd listen to the whole album again, but maybe a song or two.

Beyond the hits this one had some songs I really enjoyed, like The Man's Too Strong and some I didn't like Ride Across the River and Your Latest Trick. After a while the autotune of the voice kind of bothered me. I just wanted to hear his voice along with the more raw guitar in songs like One World. It wasn't a great voice (learned from Brother in Arms) but sometimes natural is just better because otherwise it is just the same thing over and over. I could go back and forth on this album between a 2 and a 3 depending on my mood that day.

The album starts off strong. Kinda lost me with Why Worry and Ride Across the River. Rest of the album was okayish.

First listen Saved 4/9

Couple of good tunes

Thoughts before listening: I really like Dire Straits in theory, but in reality I also can get pretty bored with them. Their hits are great, but their songs can all kind of run together and feel pretty similar across a full album. Its a good sound, but only in small doses. Anyway, I haven't listened to this in a while so I look forward to digging in today. Review: This album starts out so strong and then falls off so quickly. "So Far Away", "Money for Nothing", and "Walk of Life" start out the album with banger after banger after banger followed by "Your Latest Trick" which is the ultimate "hey...I know this one too" song. Then the second half hits and its just so dull. Mark Knopffler's guitarwork is strong throughout, but even his solos can't save these slow bore fests. 3-stars

Segundo disco de Dire Straits de éste reto. Disco muy chill, con temazos muy conocidos de ellos, muchos de alta difusión en radio. Hoy cerramos reseña acá.

So Far Away is my fave on this album - it is quite unpolished and heartfelt. I can't deny their talent, and Romeo and Juliet is one of my favourite tracks of all time (but not on this album). But I think I heard Money for Nothing too many times to enjoy it! It was played everywhere! All the time! Having said that, when I hear it now it is like a time machine back to my younger days. That's quite fun :) Mark Knopfler is cool actually. Very laid- back in interviews. Guitar ❤️

Really strong start with some songs that I recognised. Guitar riffs and solos are solid throughout but the overall quality of songs does seem to slow down as you listen further. I did enjoy this though, and didn’t realise how popular these guys are?! Favourite song: Walk of life

Classic album. Not bad.

The hits on the album are great. The other few songs are incredibly slow and boring

not my usual cup of tea but a couple good songs

The hits are the definite highlight: Money for Nothing is a bizarre yet endearing track, and Walk of Life, a song I once hated for overuse in medicine commercials, is probably my favorite on here at this point. This time, however, there are "deep cuts" that I actively enjoy, which is more than can be said for the self titled. So Far Away, Why Worry, and The Man's Too Strong are some great listens.

So weird to listen to this album now. It was so huge then, but sounds so dated in 2024 with that MOR saxophone and MTV references. He really does sound like some middle-aged guy trying to sound cool. I don't mind Sultans of Swing, but I am not sure there is anything here that I really need to go back to.

It’s okay. Clearly well played, good musicians, standard composition. Definitely has its roots in the British pub rock scene. But it’s pretty dated by today’s standard. 80s saxophone, liteFM, lullaby blues guitar. It’s good for what it is.

Very chill album. I found the songs way too long for my liking and one of them had the f slur which this albums from 80’s so makes sense. Favourite song: Why Worry? Would I listen again: Maybe, its a good album to listen to while doing chores on a chill Sunday evening

Sehr bekannte Stücke. Mag ich so mittel. Wobei das letzte Stück wirklich ausgesprochen toll ist.

Fine, songs were a bit long

3 - This is an interesting album. There's a lot going on. Bro, the average song length on this record might be about even with the prog album I listened to before this, which is crazy. I didn't listen to the trimmed down original vinyl release, obviously, but I kinda wish I did. A lot of the tracks don't need to be almost 8 minutes long. Some of the tracks kinda have a guitar focus, the obvious example being Money for Nothing, but a lot of them don't, which is odd? It kind of adds to the 80's feel of the album, which isn't exactly a positive. I like Knopfler's vocals, which is strange considering his voice isn't typically the type I latch on to, but there's something satisfying about hearing him sing. When listening to Money for Nothing and Walk of Life back to back, I didn't really expect the whole rest of the album to slow down so much. I was kinda hoping for a little more energy, but, again, maybe I would've been fine with it if these deep cuts weren't so freaking long. As a side note that I couldn't really fit anywhere else, I didn't like So Far Away. Overall, it's a mixed bag of an album, and there's still some good songwriting present, especially in the hits I like, but I'd say the 80's sound here isn't exactly my thing and the deep cuts generally aren't too special.

Interesting. For better for worse, it sounds like an instructional guitar video from the 1980s! A stand out track for music was Why Worry.

vibes: listening to the radio in nanna’s car

sleezy but lots of hits

Folky songwriting, cool textures and unsurprisingly great guitar playing make this a safe listen.

Every song drags a little too long. They find a cool sound, but do nothing but repeat it. It felt like they didn't know how to close off their songs. Decent sounds, but lose their effect by running too long.

Good instruments, gets boring at times

Loved the opening few tracks and nice bit of sax but all goes a bit Jeremy Clarkson.

The song Money For Nothing was a huge part of the mid-1980’s pop music soundtrack. You couldn’t escape it. And even the lyrics of the song ushered in the colossus that was the relatively newborn MTV. I think it’s a great track, from Terry Williams’s drum intro (I’d seen him at the Regent in 1979 drumming with Dave Edmunds & Nick Lowe’s Rockpile) to Sting’s repeated cry “I want my MTV”, which works so well & was probably the last time his vocals were ever on high rotation on radio. I like the rest of the album, but I don’t rate it with the band’s debut album. I hadn’t played it for years, but found it to be well worth a listen.

Yeah, alright

Unlike the Donald Fagen album, this one definitely has that gawdy 80s rock sound, though it doesn't really harm the listening experience. "Money for Nothing" is a classic, though I didn't realize how many "f*ggots" it had, that's a yikes. I didn't realize that Sting co-wrote and sang on it either. It is so dang catchy, was stuck in my head the rest of the day. I also recognize the iconic synth line in "Walk of Life". "So Far Away" is a nice listen too. However, I don't think the deep cuts compare to the big hits. I felt kinda meh on the album overall.

🎧Look at them yo-yos, that’s the way you do it. First three songs are absolute heaters. After that album falls into a bit of a lull. Good laidback 80s rock, love Knopfler’s Dylan-esque delivery. Enjoyed the closing title track.

First three tracks are excellent, Money For Nothing makes no sense but the guitar is instantly recognizable and awesome. The album takes a bit of a dive after Walk of Life, there are some snoozers and I lost interest until The Man’s Too Strong. Great band with some great tunes but this isn’t as strong as they’re self titled. 3.5 stars

Notable tracks: Walk of Life, Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms

Hard to avoid this album in 1985! It's good, but I don't love it. 3/5

So Far Away - I do not need to hear this again. Too long. Gets really boring after listening to like 1/3 of it. 2/5 Money For Nothing - I really could use a custom kitchen delivery rn. Iconic ass song, kind of gets old veeeery fast tho. 8 minutes of the same tune being repeated over and over is not so fun anymore. 2.5/5 Walk Of Life - Super iconic once again, idk about this tho, sounds pretty much exactly the same as Money For Nothing. Does not have action or motion. At least its a reasonable length. 3/5 Your Latest Trick - Brother got rolled tbh. I like the blues jazzy sort of aspect hear, very different from the last 3 tracks. 6 minutes is too long, but also kind of lets the brass pop off which i can appreciate. 3/5 Why Worry - Very comforting and chill, perchance. 8 minutes again, enjoyment turns into boredom I feel like the start could be shorter. Too many points where nothing is happening at all, if you skipped those parts it would probably be waaay more enjoyable. 3/5 Ride Across The River - The guitar in the middle I like. The jungle-y tone of this song feels really out of place, it feels way too mixed between two genres that shouldn't be mixed. Too slow and long (why 7 minutes), I don't think they properly achieved what they aimed for with this. 2/5 The Man's Too Strong - Reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel. I really like when they up the intensity it sounds awesome, maybe a bit jarring but I think it fits reasonably well. The rest of the song is pretty forgettable unfortunately. 3.5/5 One World - Is this guy poor? Depressed? Stupid? I enjoyed this regardless. Way too generic as an 80s rock song tho. 3.5/5 Borthers In Arms - The start pulls you in. Guitar around 50s gets it started up nicely. I think they should have just released an instrumental album at this point. The guitar goes so hard. Very peaceful. Wowza's, this is a real finisher. Very melancholic one might say. 5/5 OVR: 3/5

Man ... viele coole Partys mit der Scheibe gefeiert: Das Album ist gealtert, so dass man es zurecht nicht mehr so häufig hört. Aber auch immer mal wieder schön.

The opening tracks are classics, but it really trails off after that.

Hard one to assess as there are highs and lows. Parts that drag but parts that move.

Not my kind of music. A little too 80s maybe for me?

Got a powerful nostalgia hit from this one. I'm sure my parents had this album in our campervan when I was a child. Dire straits have plenty of tunes I enjoy but I've never been a huge fan of Knopfler's voice. This album starts really strong but becomes repetitive towards the end, doesn't leave me wanting more. Had lots of fun dancing in my kitchen to Walk of Life. Favourite tracks: Walk of Life, Your Latest Trick

Some really good songs, but also some very bland ones. A bit overhyped in my opinion as well, never really got the hype with Dire Straits. 3/5

I gave it two listens. So far, I do enjoy it with one major caveat. The lyrics in Money for Nothing did not age well. The homophobic language takes away from the music. Might give it a 3rd listen at some point, as so far it's hard to tell if it was intentional derogatory language or an element of the less accepting times. 3/5.

I haven’t listened to this in a long time. There’s a big part of me that wanted this to stand up better than it did. I do find walk of life a bit annoying now.

Money for nothing is obviously a world eating riff Brothers In Arms is an epic Walk of Life is fun But the rest wasn’t as memorable as I expected

Memberberries. But its only OK, very middle of the road.

Cool guitars, sleep-inducing vocals, averages out as 2.5 which I'll round up

On first listen, I thought this was a front loaded bore of an album. However by the third listen, I was beginning to respect the ksucianship and craft on display. The production is top notch. It’s a grower.

Couple of good well known songs and the rest is shite, just like every other fucker on the list.

Some bangers on this album and Mark Knopfler’s classic style is here but the album feels largely self indulgent with most of the songs running far longer than necessary.

i didn’t realise i know like every song on this lmfao

The first few songs were banging but then they really slowed down. They sounded alright but it was kind of boring

6/10 - Pretty chill and quite enjoyable. I liked most of the songs including walk of life and why worry?. I had heard most of the first half of the album and some of the lyrics in Money For Nothing are less than ideal. The songs are also kind of long.

Nostalgia

Dire Straits is another one of those bands that seem to have so many popular hit songs that I’ve just never heard. I was vaguely familiar with who they are before listening to this. My biggest takeaway? Brothers in Arms is unfortunately more generic than not. For every song that really succeeds in doing something interesting, there is another song that falls short. The Eagles are an enjoyable group to listen to, but even I can admit they border on being a little too traditional for me. This album feels even more like that, just for a different decade and with more experimental edge. At least this band has a better vocalist that actually sounds unique compared to the rest of the 80’s male singers. What this album excels at best is creating some really great ambiance. The synth work is unexpectedly really admirable. Obviously you can’t really have a review of this album without mentioning what is objectively the best song. Even if you have never listened to the song yourself, I’m sure everyone has heard the intro to Money for Nothing before, especially with the legendary guitar solo in said intro. In an album filled with some duds, this goes above and beyond. I feel as if this album wants so badly to be something it isn’t. Some of these songs are so popular, and I’m just not sure why. Rating: 6/10

That guitar riff!

Very good album. Almost every song is a hit. Guitarist Mark Knopfler is dynamic and bold in writing a late 70's pop album with so much outside influence. However, even the hits don't resonate with me all that much. Its good music but I don't get what all the fuss is.

Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler seemed destined to be remembered as competent journeymen until a couple of well timed/placed videos in the newish MTV format rocketed them into the stratosphere (see also, ZZ Top). Pleasant enough listening, though nothing earth shattering or that really moves the needle (see instead, Prince).

Solid and superecognizable

Years after it's release, I still can't listen to "Money For Nothing" since it was played ad nauseam for years. The less well known songs on here are actually pretty good, but they almost seem like they're from another band/album alongside the bigger hit songs here.

Damn, I knew 2/3 of the songs and I don't even go out of my way to listen to Dire Straits. I always find them instrumentally really good, but I'm not a fan of Mark Knopfler's vocal style. Thankfully there were a few songs that aren't very vocally rich. I'd say the best song is Your Latest Trick.

It's nice enough, and it's not too offensive. There's some quite good songs in here, more so on the first half. There's some nice variation in music, instruments and so on. I'm not excited by any of it, but it's nice. The second half all goes a bit slow and the length of the tracks start to wear on you a little bit more. Side note: It's a rubbish album cover, but I won't hold that against it. A perfectly acceptable, middle of the road 3.

Money For Nothing and Brothers In Arms are great songs, and there are a couple of other good tracks here. The middle is just slow and boring though.

Nostalgic album. Some bangers for sure. Some cheesy ones like Your latest Trick. Not sure I ever actually listened to this back to front even though Dad had this on vinyl growing up. It felt a little dated but overall a solid album.

It wasn't bad, but wasn't my favourite either

Strong start with VH1 heavy rotation singles, and also gorgeously produced throughout - but then it kind of tapers off into wishwashy-ness. While strangely it was nice to hear some of these tracks - as a record it’s bland.

If you'd asked me to name a Dire Straits album before today, I'd have had no idea. If you'd asked me to name a song, I would have said Romeo and Juliet (and likely forgotten about the gems on this album). So far away is super chill, the build up to the guitar coming in on Money for Nothing is cool, and Walk of Life is just really pleasant to listen to with those soothing organ(?) sounds. Mark Knopfler's voice isn't my favorite but it doesn't take away from the songs I enjoyed. Overall not an album I'd come back to aside from the few songs I liked.

Really confusing genre. Rock? Country? Rockabilly? Either way, it has a cool sound. “Money for Nothing” and “Walk of Life” are great.

The first three songs were all over the radio, when this came out. The record benefited from the performance they did at Live-Aid with Sting. All it took was the phrase, “I want my MTV”, and this was solidified as a classic. People lost their minds. It’s okay. Clearly well played, good musicians, standard composition. Definitely has its roots in the British pub rock scene. But it’s pretty dated by today’s standard. 80s saxophone, liteFM, lullaby blues guitar. It’s good for what it is.

Pas mal

This album is a weird one. I've heard some Dire Straits songs before and I can see why those i knew got all the radio play. This album was good but I was finding myself tired of listening to it about halfway through.

Wasn't as into it as I thought I would be, instrumentals are very pretty though.

:( I don't think I had heard the unedited Money for Nothing iteration. Yikes. I looked it up and there was a whole debate on whether it was appropriate to air the unedited song. You can look into it more but it's an interesting aside to whether it should be viewed from the point of a working class stiff talking or whether the audience will find it appropriate to use that particular slur.

you know something this was pretty good. Money for Nothing is a jam

Enjoyed the album some fantastic 80s riffs and production. A dip in the middle with a few top tracks. Lacking consistent quality but still good. Light 7

Adorei principalmente a primeira metade!!

Look, the hits are hits and everyone knows those songs. But the other stuff - way too long and boring. 6min, 7min tracks. I hate long songs! 3 stars cos the hits are just too damn iconic.

Not my thing. First three are classics, last two were okay. Rest was meh

I always think I don’t really like Dire Straits but then I listen and I’m like “oh yeah this song is good. Oh yeah, this one too.” and on and on for most of the album. Brothers in Arms definitely has its best songs near the beginning, and gets weaker as it goes along until the final track which is solid. I feel like there’s too much of a synth sound in everything by Dire Straits or Knopfler (e.g. The Princess Bride soundtrack), when they could have easily excelled as a hard rock act. I think the biggest problem is the synthesized drum sounds, which just sound so weak on these tracks. I guess they seemed to do alright for themselves though. Side note: I’ve heard “Money for Nothing” dozens if not hundreds of times, and somehow today was the first time that I thought “wait… is that Sting singing backup vocals?” and looked it up, and yes, it is Sting. Can’t believe it took me that long to realize that.

What a great album. It's so well composed and the performances are spot on. I used to get so frustrated when my Dad would put this record on when I was a kid, but now I love it. Great album, the only reason I am not giving it 4 stars is that it is slightly out of my taste.

Pretty good. Really enjoyed the horn usage and solos. Overall a reasonable album.

Money for Nothing was tough to listen to. The rest was fine

I feel like Mark Knopfler's playing is a little subdued for the flashy synths on this one. Still, covers a good range, from their standard rockabilly to jazz. Favorite tracks: "Money For Nothing", "Brothers In On"

Apart from some bigoted lyrics, the music has held up well. The guitars (including bass) have always been quite enjoyable to me.

I liked that one song

Quite ok, knew it. One of my ex's favourite.

Good music but not great music. I found it ultimately uninspiring. But still, good music.

I thought Walk Of Life was a John Mellencamp song

I wished the electric guitar sound was grittier in Money for Nothing, it seemed to be toned down to fit that smooth 80s production. But I’m strangely enjoying the smooth saxophone of Your Latest Trick.

An album I always liked, but never loved. I appreciated the music, but it's not quite the type I like. Perhaps it's a little too restrained? ...too soft? ...too top 30 / radio play? Best tracks... So far away (bit too gentle and twee though) Money for nothing - too overplayed You latest trick - probably the best track Why worry - a very decent track Brothers in arms - overplayed

Pretty middle of the road. Nothing special for me

Fine, again good singles but very much of its time.

I’m not exactly sure what to make of this album. It felt like I went from listening to the Beetles to Phil Collins to Neil Diamond to George Michaels all in the course of four tracks. I liked their least popular songs on this album the best, maybe because there was a sense of honesty about them that you don’t hear on something like Walk of Life. And for me, I think that’s the crux of this album. It feels like they wrote it for someone else rather than writing the kind of album they wanted to make. There’s a lot of great songs and some real stinkers too, but I think a lack of focus and authenticity is what makes me rate this one down a bit.

Walk of Life is a Classic

3 bangers to start, but quality dropped off fast after that. I expect more from albums here.

Nice album, heard of ‘money for nothing’ and ‘walk of life’ but the others were easy listening.

Decent.

was ok as background music. nothing really grabbed my attention
