Reviews (page 3 of 8)

Vey nice. Nothing spectacular in my opinion but I did like it.

I remember hearing chocolate cake on the radio in 1991 and being absolutely blown away. It was lyrically witty and interesting and catchy. And there weren’t an awful lot of Australian bands around. There are six absolute bangers on this album all of which I heard over that period of 91/92. Some of them feel a bit too easy listening but they haven’t ever left me. Weather with you is obviously an absolute classic. A very welcome nostalgic trip.

Pretty great album. Back in the day this got so much airplay in Canada, i thought they were Canadian.

Really enjoyed this. The harmonies and orchestral touches were on point.

20 albums in and this is my first pleasant surprise. This feels like a tv show that you have to watch the first couple episodes that aren't that great before you start getting into and you're like, 'yeah, actually, i'm going to keep watching' and it grows on you. Ends up being a really familiar without ever having heard a song before. Really enjoyed the majority of it.

Any Aussies in the house? This album is chock a block with great songwriting and singable tunes from a band hitting their peak. Not sure how this will go down with people not from the right place or era. Let's read some reviews and find out. Ok.It divides people, but what doesn't. No surprises. Crowded House is great music for mildly interesting white people. If you're not that, you probably don't feel it. I like to think I'm mildly interesting. Four stars

I remembered this as being sublime and it doesn’t quite live up to that hype. It somehow sounds a bit lacklustre at times. Still, there are some fantastic pop songs on here

Pleasantly surprised by this album!

A pleasant surprise! I wonder how many other jangly-pop guitar bands like this I missed out on at the time due to the Grunge Ascendancy. I will listen to this again.

This was very good. Listen again categoru

First time listening to this band, great album. Melodic and beautiful, definitely gonna check out their other albums

Never heard it before, but was not expecting such a banger

Wow this is a great early 90's indie rock album

A nice new discovery for me. I liked it very much.

Used to live this album back in the day. A wonderfully crafted pop album.

I've never heard of this group before, but they are great! I enjoyed the album. Mellow 90s alt rock, nice variety even though all of the songs are mellow.

Still sounds good with 4 or 5 very good tracks

Never really listened to a lot of Crowded House, but really enjoy what I’ve been hearing.

Nothing life changing but a surprisingly interesting pop album

Like someone said, lets make an album of everything good till 90's and did a great job

One of my favourite albums from 1991. Great vocals nice tunes what's not to like. A couple of classic songs.

Surprised I had never heard any of this before. Like an Aussie/NZ version of CSNY

Good album. Very entertaining

More great pop from the 80s/90s era. Fall At Your Feet, Weather With You, and Four Seasons In One Day are all absolutely excellent and the whole album is very listenable.

Continuing the power pop tradition in line with 80s era Squeeze, Crowded House removes the jangle, new wave and silliness out of Argy Bargy and outputs a perfectly capable and consistent album of pop rock songs.

Favourite tracks: fall at your feet; weather with you; chocolate cake; tall trees

Wanted to hate it. Ended up thinking it was very good. Maybe a bit long, and gets a bit too much like 90's beige toward the end, but some incredible harmonies and good songs.

Curti, tem umas 3 ou 2 músicas boas

Never heard of these guys, but I love the style. I’ve heard “Fall at Your Feet” only as a part of the 4-chord song by Axis of Awesome. The lyrics are a bit weird in some places, but good weird, not Nick Cave weird. Overall, I’m a fan of this but it didn’t quite give me enough feels for a 5 star.

Weather With You, Fall At Your Feet, It’s Only Natural & Four Seasons are as good as it gets. The rest is not too bad at all

3.5 Nice cover.

Some really good songs on this one, I just love Weather With You, Chocolate Cake and Tall Trees. The album is a great chill album, though I wouldn't say it breaks new ground or anything, it's just solid. I think I just like Neil Finn's voice.

Never heard this one before. And I sort of liked it? Like kinda liked a lot of it. Grabbed me from the first song, Chocolate Cake

I like this album overall, although there are a few misses. Best track: Fall at Your Feet. Fun (not) fact: Weather With You was accidentally misspelt and is actually about a sheep farmer and his friend

I really enjoyed this album!

I really liked this, but wouldn't play it on repeat so capped at 4 stars

Finely crafted tunes

Three absolute bangers on here - Fall at your feet, It's Only Natural and Weather with you. The rest is decent too but - especially growing up in Australia - those three are tunes that I grew up hearing.

I liked this more than I thought I would

3.5 stars rounded up.

The Split Enz album we finally had to have? Love Tim but wasn't a fan of him muscling in on the House. But looking back, this is magic, mostly.

The first song felt very fat shamey, which set a weird offensive tone at the start of the album. That song aside, I really enjoyed a lot of the songs on this, especially the last several. It felt interesting and reflective and was pretty catchy too.

This list has exposed me to a bunch of music I otherwise would never have listened to. Fun album! It lost me here and there but the artist really tries something different. It gives me Cat Stevens vibes with a little more edge in some places.

Really upbeat and fun. Reminded me of late 80s/early 90s Rush at times. I didn’t know any of the songs besides “Weather With You” and unlike other one hit wonder albums on this list… this one was actually good all the way through

Pretty good composition, kinda cheesy

Great compositions and a fun listen!

I liked this, it was upbeat and boppy. I would listen to this again.

Great album, discovered Jimmy Buffett covered their song. Fun music.

Uplifting and moving melodies. Their musicianship, harmonies, lyrics…this album deserved a lot more attention in the day.

This album has some real gems. I think with a few more listens it might go into my rotation, but for a single listen I'd give it a 4.

Being a New Zealander, my opinion of Crowded House is definitely more positive than it should be – but seriously, this stuff slaps. The band is sort of a combination of R.E.M. and the Eagles, with a little of Neil Finn's 80s Split Enz sprinkled in there. The main reason I mention the Eagles is because of Crowded House's tendency to rely heavily on two- or three-part harmonies throughout entire tracks – not that that's necessarily a bad thing. It adds a bit of colour to an otherwise fairly standard vocal. The guitar lines and solos are solid, if a little artificial – but honestly, for 90s pop rock, I'll take what I can get. The hit single Weather With You has a sparkling, sitar-sounding lead guitar that inexplicably forces its way into your head even though it doesn't exactly scream "riff". It's pretty infectious, and also the strongest track on the album. Fall At Your Feet has a catchy melodic hook, making it another great track. Other tracks like Chocolate Cake, It's Only Natural, Four Seasons In One Day, and Fame Is are pretty darn good too. Lots of references to other musicians and famous figures in the lyrics, which comes across as a bit contrived at times but is still a fun addition. I have to imagine the cover art is a nod to either Aboriginal or Māori (Australia or New Zealand native) culture, but I'm not certain. Still, it's pretty cool, and certainly memorable. 4/5 Key tracks: Chocolate Cake, Fall At Your Feet, Weather With You, Four Seasons In One Day

Solid album. I feel like I had heard 1 song before. If you're going to play pop music it better have a hook. The song writing is well crafted on this album. I enjoyed it more the 2nd time I listened.

Hebben we deze live gezien? JA NATUUUUUIUURLIJK. Fan dus. Ik ken weinig. Maar 4 sterren

Some very good pop songs on here and you can hear the influence of the Beatles on their style, especially the harmonies. This style was replicated throughout the entire decade of the 90s. But there are a few very average songs, so get a high 3 from me.

I quite liked this, in a good way “easy listening”, love his voice.

My first real exposure to these guys was through the video for something so strong. I loved the sound that they had. It was useful and happy sounding. I realized later that I had been hearing some of their stuff from time to time. Most of those tunes were from this album. It’s a great album. Neil Finn is a fantastic songwriter. His songs can pull you right in. You feel everything he wants you to feel. I have so much in my music catalog that I really enjoy. Crowded House is in there. This album represents well!

chill sunny day, instrumental use/riffs are very interesting in some songs. i’m not feeling intense emotions, but it’s enjoyable

Very pleasantly surprised by this album. Real music, real melodies, real vocals- good damn music for a change.

- chocolate cake is 7.5/10 - its only natural to weather with you are all 6.5/10 - whispers and moans is 5.5/10 - four seasons in one day is V XTC and is 6/10 - there goes god is 6.5/10 - can’t remember the next three so 5.5/10 -italian plastic is 6.5/10 - she goes on 5/10 - how will ypu go/ im still here 4.5/10 overall: 6/10 which is 3/5

Started really strongly with chocolate cake which was pretty wacky and pretty enjoyable and then continued like this with it’s only natural and fall at your feet. It didn’t sound like something from the early 90s honestly. I found all I ask was really quite relaxing without being laboriously repetitive which i appreciated. Overall this was good fun

mid. four seasons in a day and fall at your feet and chocolate cake and there goes god are chill, rest is decent but boring. low 7/10

que bueno que me tocó escucharlo un dia de lluvia

This album really surprised me. I didn’t know what to expect and this is some great song writing and performances.

My first time listening to a whole Crowded House album. It's good! The first track is strangely bad, but after that it's all good. Plenty of classics on there too. 3.75 stars

Oh nostalgia. This album was massive in Australia when it came out. It had 5 hit singles, which are still played on the radio today. With that said I've never listened to the full album before. (I was in the punk and metal scene when it came out). So nostalgia aside and listening critically, is it a good album? I'd say this is a really good album, but there is nothing ground breaking here, so I can't call it great.

This was a really fun pop album. Totally knew some of the songs that weren’t their “hits”. Just a nice listen! Last track got kinda weird but everything was fun.

Very good album, had nice personality between songs, and you can’t miss with chocolate cake

Really good pop rock, little more to say. Perhaps a slight paradox; it manages to feel both middle-of-the-road and substantial at the same time. You can hear traces of Paul McCartney, Squeeze and, in rockier tracks like 'Tall Trees' and 'Fame Is', the Knack. But all those guys put out five star albums, and this doesn't quite scale the heights. Neil Finn has a wan voice that works in the context the music, and the band chop it up admirably. Songwriting is neat too - some cute observations studded here there in the lyrics.

Enjoyed this. Nice harmonies.

Good album, mate. Few really nice and well known songs, the rest of the record solid, at least. It's a rather typical pop rock album, but they have done almost everything correctly. It's more surprising, because I have never in my life heard of a band called Crowded House. Good stuff, not 5 stars worthy, but still a really positive note.

Really good! Weather with you is my favourite.

This was a new band for me and was very pleasantly surprised, it was solid from start to finish.

catchy and fun album with a wide range of styles that really bring you back into the album. Ranging from rock to swing to almost big band, it's a really fun album.

me gustó bastante ponele que 8/10 qsy!

5/5: Chocolate Cake, It's Only Natural, Weather With You. 4/5: Fall at Your Feet, Whispers and Moans, Four Seasons in One Day, All I Ask, As Sure as I Am, She Goes On.

Not really familiar with Crowded House, but I enjoyed listening to this album. I'm familiar with one of their tunes, Fall at Your Feet, but only from jesse Cook's cover (which IMO is far superior to the original). I think my favourite song on this album is There Goes God. I had to look the lyrics up because I wasn't sure I was hearing the chorus correctly. 🤣😂 Yes, yes I heard it correctly and it's amazing!

Cozy, sigurno cu poslusati jos koji put 3.5

Liked it.

Enjoyable listen

I like a little more grit but there’s no denying the talent of Neil Finn. Or Tim. Chocolate cake is my favourite of these singles but weather with you and fall at your feet are songs that maybe only McCartney at his absolute best could equal as songs. Maybe Elton too. An excellent album. And we can claim it as Australian because Hester and Seymour were born in Australia. 3.8.

Chill and enjoyable rock record but overall pretty forgettable. 3.5 rounded up

Not too shabby

Nz representation!!! There’s some local bops on here (weather with you)

Winning, well-mannered and very effectively executed pop, if extremely normie and a full notch less than urgently compelling and certainly not transcendent. High-quailty songcraft made with authentic passion and some tenderness (if borderline sentimental).

Reminds me of Guster mixed with Pink Floyd. Good indie sounding music!

Good album. Not as good as the first.

I really like this one—great songwriting, fun lyrics, well produced and conceived. At times, it reminds me of Squeeze (which is a good thing). I can definitely hear the Split Enz connection. This is definitely an album I’ll be coming back to—another happy discovery of this project!

The music was pretty good! It was just a little boring at times. Overall, not too bad. I am trying to figure out where I know the song “Fame Is” from because it sounded SO familiar, but as far as I know, I have never heard anything from this band before, and “Fame Is” was not one of their more well-known songs. Idk!

Weird album. Definitely doesn't sound early 90s. Almost Beatles-esque guitar pop at points. Don't fully know how to evaluate this one.

Liked the overall experience! Some neat songs.

Solid chill pop 3.5 stars

These cats knew exactly what they were doing and did it well and likably and tunefully. This is sensible, well-judged, well-mannered and well-made pop at a relatively high level.

honestly a vibe

Australian classic rock. Not super interesting, but nice to listen to. Very smooth vocals and bass playing. Varies between up tempo songs with mild shredding and slow calm songs.

Woodface is the third album by the New Zealand band Crowded House, released in 1991. Here is a detailed review of the album based on the search results: - The album features the outstanding harmonies of the brothers' perfectly matched voices and combines flawless melodies - The songs are extremely well-crafted and highly evocative, and the musicianship is excellent[2]. - Woodface is the strongest collection of songs put out by Crowded House on one release, and it is transcendent pure pop, where they produced numerous three-minute melodic miracles - The album stalled in the US at #83, but in the UK, it scored the band’s their first top 10 and did well throughout Europe - The big singles on the album, such as "Weather With You," "It’s Only Natural," and "Four Seasons In One Day," became synonymous with the band's name[6]. - The lyrics on Woodface mostly provide subtle food for thought or make you appreciate the flawed beauty of being alive - The album is a really nice collection of songs, with nothing bad, just plenty of warm, mellow, tuneful songs that are expertly written and produced - The album features a hidden mini-track called "I'm Still Here," which is a humorous studio jam session that happened to make it onto tape - The album is overdue for a well-deserved dusting off and re-examination Overall, Woodface is a well-crafted album with excellent musicianship and outstanding harmonies. The album features numerous three-minute melodic miracles and is transcendent pure pop. The lyrics provide subtle food for thought or make you appreciate the flawed beauty of being alive. The album is a really nice collection of songs, with nothing bad, just plenty of warm, mellow, tuneful songs that are expertly written and produced. The album is overdue for a well-deserved dusting off and re-examination.

Enjoyed it, gave me Rumours era Fleetwood Mac vibes

A killer first half, second half is not too shabby but stops it short of being a five star album. When Crowded House shine they are brighter than the sun.

I liked, it feels like it was written and played by professional and talented 15 year old at heart, I think that's was the point and since it is then it gets my approval.

Yllätti positiivisesti

Surprisingly good!

Such an interesting indie record for the early 1990s. This takes place pre-grunge but at the decline of hair metal. Great production quality and stellar songwriting all come together to form a 90s album I had no clue about previously.

Some timeless gems in here from one of New Zealand's finest songwriters (the best ones are Derek Lind, and Don McGlashan) but also some very dated filler. A best of collection gets you a better batch of songs for Crowded House.

Some songs haven't aged well but classic songs

Really enjoyed this all the way through. The ending of the last song brought this up 4. Fun album

Great listen! Almost like post post punk album, has some elements of new wave but firmly in the alternative rock coming out of the 80s.

a bit dry at parts, but mostly pretty cool - 8/10

Normally, music this traditional doesn't do much for me. But sometimes, something is just done so well that you can't help but love it. Acoustic guitars, harmonies and ornamental extras normally make me want to claw my eyes out, but this has charm, technique, and style.

Yndisleg nostalgía. Eldist samt vel.

Saw them live this year they still put on a great show.

Still great

Ik heb hier wel vangenoten. Ik kende crowded house sws al door mijn pa maar ben het pas meer gaan luisteren door een huisgenoot van mij. Heerlijk voor de zondagochtend!

pretty good stuff, 4 stars methinks.

Several great songs I already liked.

Pretty typical 90s rock ala hootie and bnl. However there are moments where it sounds more indie like the eels or late 90s radiohead. Def. an influential sound.

Real close to a 5 but the middle is on the weaker side

- Great production, great vibes - Some sexy songs on here, in a good way - Chocolate Cake, It's Only Natural, Tall Trees

good and quiet album for relaxation. tracks added: 3 fav track: tall trees 7/10

This is pretty good so far. I like the opening song Chocolate Cake a lot since it's nice and upbeat. Four Seasons in One Day is so pretty. This album is really good so far and would be great to smoke to.

It seems Flight of the Concords were pretty on the nose in describing Neil Finn as 'New Zealand's answer to Paul McCartney'. This album shows Finn to be an outstanding songwriter and a lot of the songs on here have a Beatlesesque quality. Whilst McCartney can stray towards novelty, Finn can at times verge on easy listening. However, the quality of the melodies and the attention to detail of the music elevate the songs and make some of them genuinely timeless. 'Weather With You', 'Four Seasons In One Day', and 'Fall At Your Feet', in particular, are classics. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Weather With You Date listened: 08/05/23

A near-perfect album.

Probably more consistent than the album with all the hits that were big in the states. Neil Finn is incredibly underrated, especially as a songwriter, so no one should be surprised that this album is better than the hideous album cover suggests it would be.

A favourite of mine: songwriting, arrangements, vocals - all great. Why not 5 stars? It’s a perfect collection of songs but lacks a higher-level vision (many will disagree…)

Kiwi/Aussie rock greats Crowded House weren't over with the dream yet. Despite the album's title, Woodface finds the band at their expressive best, tackling topics such as consumption, weather and mood changes all while in a positive and upbeat sound. Glad to have come across them when I've had the chance, been wanting to for quite a long time. Pretty good album. Favorites: Chocolate Cake, Tall Trees, Weather With You, Whispers and Moans, Four Seasons in One Day, There Goes God, All I Ask, Italian Plastic, How Will You Go/I'm Still Here.

I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that my first exposure to this album is James Blunt's cover of "Fall at Your Feet". But hey, that's a decent cover, and this is a decent album! Neil Finn is a great songwriter, at the height of his powers here. "Weather With You" is vaguely overrated amongst their big singles though. I don't like the group singalong vibe. Still though, this is a good listen.

Consistent pop rock. Enjoyed the jangly undertones

I have never heard of this group but apparently it was part of my dad's tape repertoire he would listen to on his Walkman in the lab in grad school. I definitely enjoyed the first two-thirds of this record a lot. "It's only Natural", "Weather With You", and "There Goes God" were the standouts for me and there were a couple others I liked too. It slows down quite a bit and probably would have benefited from being a few songs shorter but I can't say the quality diminishes too much. I will definitely listen to this record again. Personal Enjoyment - 8 Songwriting - 8 Lyrics - 8.5 Originality - 7 Production Value - 9 Artwork - 10 Overall - 8.3

"Weather With You" beams me straight back to childhood long car journeys to summer seaside holidays, so that's a massive nostalgia bump right there. It still stands up in its own right, too. Otherwise, yeah, an enjoyable enough listen. Fave track - apart from the childhood transportation flashback, I also dug "Chocolate Cake"

This is a great early 90s rock album, expertly played and produced with quite a bit variation between the songs. I like this. 4/5

Täähän olikin tosi hyvä levy :D

3.75. I learned my favorite song from the Axis of Awesome actually

Ooh! Groovy! Turns out I am a complete sucker for vocal harmony. I should have known. very solid. nothing transcendent. four star album. Would listen again.

really enjoyed this one tbh, just some really solid 90s pop tunes

I only knew the hits from their first album, so I was really happy to hear more of Crowded House harmonies with this. It's not an album that hits you over the head, but it is just what it is supposed to be. Although I think I need to listen to it a couple more times to really take it in properly, I was sure happy to hear something lovely like this today.

I like the vibe of Crowded House, but I was not familiar with this album. Nice.

I liked this album. The lyrics were often fun. The music flirted with catchy. I didn’t quite come to love this album, but it was interesting enough and listenable enough. With time I may just like it more and more.

I really liked this album. Goofy early 90s lyrics but solid musically.

Tuneful and witty. I'll revisit this.

Great album

This is an absolute gem, not only does this album feature knockout singles, most of the other songs are amazing too! Such a shame I never got around this record earlier. I could listen to Neil and Tim harmonize over these beautiful lyrics all day. And the band is so, so good! Crowded House is creeping up on my all time favorite bands list!! Lyric highlights: - And you wander the streets never reaching the heights that you seek. - I feel halfway to zero. Call me a hero, I might just agree - Then I wake up in your room. To share one piece of your life. I'd give anything to be a fly upon the wall. And hear your whispers and moans. - Oh, please let me stray. Far from familiar things. All I ask is to live each moment. - Appearing in the eyes of children. In the clear blue mountain view. The colouring in the sky. And painting ladders to heaven Key tracks: Chocolate Cake, It's Only Natural, Fall At Your Feet, Weather With You, Whispers And Moans, Four Seasons In One Day, All I Ask, She Goes On. 8,5 out of 10

some really good songs and a nice listen overall

So. We are in the age of the long tail. Why then is it hard for intelligent, non-formula-ised music (like this) to find a place in the charts (even the lower reaches; Crowded House never threatened the higher reaches of the UK Top 40. But then, they never sought to, in that as water finds its level, so too they understood the true commercial and critical appeal of their particular brand of music) ? I blame pop journalism. (Yes. the definition of 'pop' has massively changed in the last thirty years). We are all the poorer for this.

This album is absolutely superb. Was a first listen for me. It won’t be the last.

On the plus side is the solid production, decent vocals and a few strong songs. Overall it's alright but it's also a bit overrated to these ears

I have a big old soft spot for this album. Appreciate that a couple of tracks are a bit lackluster, but still love the hits. 4.5

Woodface is uneven, and perhaps a bit too weird lyrically to appeal to some listeners. But there’s a real joy in these songs, and the spirit of collaboration is alive and well.

This never clicked with me back in the day, but it's pretty good!

I think of the Finn brothers as the Australian Difford and Tillbrook.which isn't right but they definitely have shades of Squeeze about them. When they get it right, it's wonderful - and when they don't, it's still pretty good.

Not familiar with crowded house before this. But, really enjoyed this album. It had a good mix of styles and tempos. Catchy lyrics, and a tight groove.

muito bom, sonzao australiano nao conhecia

bardzo przyjemne

- variety is excellent, though very much a pop rock record plays with country, folk, soft rock, baroque pop, funk and more - quality is great throughout, band sounds natural with all they try - stands out in a consistent sense throughout, memorable melodies and catchy lyrics - if anything the band loses its sound a bit in last third of the album, even if quality is strong Highlights: Chocolate cake, it's only natural, whispers and moans, four seasons in one day, there goes god 7/10

C'est la fête à la maison

Rather enjoyable, good to relax too

I love this album. Massive nostalgia hit 😁

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Chocolate cake, Fall at your feet, Weather with you, As sure as I am

Really enjoyed this album. “Fall at your Feet”is an amazing song.

Woodface whatface? P good Nolan Nolan: Yuh

Pretty good, but not perfect. Really interesting choices of instruments, engaging (if often impenetrable) lyrics, lovely vocal harmonies, always good to hear antipodean voices represented in the book.

Didn't know this band before, but they were right up my alley. Excellent musicality and mature themes in many of the tracks!

Like pulling an old sweatshirt out of the deep recesses of your closet. Really comfortable but the style doesn’t quite fit your life anymore. But you still love it. I bought this the week it was released and another album little Tommy Dyke listened to while toddling around his home in South Minneapolis. Both mom and Dad were fans. Great songs, solid lyrics and good vibes.

I love this! Maybe it's the stark contrast between this and the heinous Korn album I had to suffer through yesterday, but oh my god, what a huge breath of fresh air this is! Thank you Bryan Christ for always looking out for me, you a real one dude. More likely it's just that Crowded House is a band that puts all the ingredients I like together and bakes up something truly delicious. They give me the quirky, tongue in cheek, oddball pop with a smoothness that I can't get enough of. Please let me have another piece of chocolate cake!

Relaxing album with some good lyrics, really nothing extraordinary. At some point it could get kinda boring but some changes on the tone and rhythm used make it more interesting, as said, nothing extraordinary.

This album was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting some mediocre rock but it was actually really really good. I liked the title track and the rest of it was a really nice listen too.

Great! Foo Fighters adjacent

I can't really separate this album from my nostalgia but why should I? What's the value of being objective and balanced? Like do my opinions actually matter? no they don't.

I had forgotten how much I enjoy the music of Crowded House. Thanks for the reminder.

This is just booming with variety! I was okay with the first couple of songs, but starting at “Fall at Your Feet” things really started moving fast. The chorus on “Tall Trees” is amazing, “Four Seasons In One Day” touches something Beatles-esque, the harmonica on “There Goes God” is just incredible and all of a sudden they hit you with vocal harmonies on the powerful “Fame Is”. Australia (and NZ) are really capable of some great things musically.

Highlights: Chocolate Cake, It’s Only Natural, Weather with You, There Goes God

Was only familiar with a few of the song, but enjoyed.

Really like this album. Fall at your feet is my favorite track but it’s all listenable. Introduced me to a new band I like.

Excellent!

Crowded House seemed sophisticated when I was of an age listening to indie music. I never got it then. As I've grown older I've appreciated it more. Some really great songs on here.

Great album. Really enjoyed this with its alternative style and good range of songs. Some really good stand out songs as well. Always enjoyed Crowded House music and this is one album I really enjoyed. 4.75

While this does contain some pretty perfect soft-pop-rock singles, the whole thing lands somewhere between soppy Beatles and Simply Red - which isn’t the best place to be.

This was a bit of a strange one. I'm not sure if it's inclusion in this list is really justified - but I did enjoy it, despite having a hard time pinning down, what exactly I enjoyed about it. The album definitely has some depth to it.

Dit was prachtig zeg! Nog een keertje dan maar...

Niets op aan te merken. Gewoon erg goed!

Ik heb altijd wel een zwak voor Crowded House gehad. Prachtige popliedjes.

For some reason, the vocals reminded me of Thomas Dolby. Can't put my finger on why. Probably my favorite track was "All I Ask," wow what a sudden change of pace from the other stuff on the album. That was really nice. Kinda wish the album ended with that. That would have been a big risk, though. The other stuff was good, too. The more I think of it, the more I grow fond of the stuff on it. So yeah, I did dig this album a good deal. It had a... quirkiness to it.

Really good album again never listened to before I really like there style especially some of there almost late Beatles stuff like there goes god

Really enjoyed this, some funky sounds and some nice slower numbers

Loved it.

There's a part of me that wants to not like this album. It's too slick, too polished, not organic or genuine sounding enough. But it's really impossible not to like it. The harmonies, the beautiful melodies, the production, it all comes together to make for a really strong, enjoyable album of songs. 4 stars.

Lots of familiar stuff!

Pretty decent. Some great tunes like Chocolate Cake, It's Only Natural, Whispers and Moans, Fame Is, All I Ask, As Sure As I Am, She Goes On. The other half of the album features mediocre songs and forgettable vocals.

I have known about Neil Finn and Crowded House and everyone's love for them forever. Suffice to say this is not at all what I was expecting, way more unconventional then I was expecting given all of the love. But I found it smart and instantly likeable. Played this record a few times and will play it again.

Had never heard of this band. Put this on during my drive home today and was enjoying it, but was trying to put my finger on why I recognized the sound. When the first second of ‘Weather With You’ came on it all clicked into place. Enjoyable music. Don’t know that I’ll go back to it

Like most Aussies my age, I pretty much grew up on Crowded House so it's hard to remember a time when I didn't like it. Everyone's parents had their albums and I've heard their singles every day on the radio for 30-something years now. Just a great band. Saving a 5/5 on these guys for the self-titled (if it's here) but this album still gets an easy 4/5.

A lovely album

Ooh there's something so warm and familiar about these guys' vocals to me. So cosy and reassuring. I love the classics and I love the tracks in between like Tall Trees.

1991. Pixies and Sonic Youth have given way to a new breed of noise rock which has now crystallised into grunge. Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden are in their prime, with shoegaze blowing up across the pond too. But I’ll take Crowded House’s “Woodface” any day. At first listen, this album seems very out of step with a lot of alt-rock of the day, but there's crossover with R.E.M. and definite foreshadowing of Britpop. The Beatles revival is tangible in tracks like "It's Only Natural" or "Fall At Your Feet", where the vocals- and a lot of those clean and jangly guitar lines, for that matter- are very reminiscent of George Harrison at times. And the near-constant harmonies are a lovely touch to elevate songs even further. “Weather With You” is the only one I’d heard here, but it is better than I’d ever given it credit for- the chorus could run and run. That said, it also sounds like it would be enjoyed by dads in faded jeans trying to cling on to youth by listening to “this newer band Crowded House” at a festival. Just about every other song, from the singles to the deep cuts, is tight and accomplished, demonstrating smart, choppy songwriting from the Finn brothers. There’s more than a little wry humour, even if sometimes it veers a little on the mean-spirited side (the otherwise great opener “Chocolate Cake”). Later, "there goes God, in his sexy pants and his sausage dog” is a ridiculous line but made me wonder why I’d never heard such a portrayal before. Inspired. The band are a little less convincing when they're going for all-out rock ("Tall Trees", "Fame Is", but they're still enjoyable tracks. And when the tempo takes a backseat, there’s the effortless melodic sensibilities of melancholic tracks like “Four Seasons In One Day”, "As Sure As I Am" (more songs need accordion) or the gorgeous “Fall At Your Feet”. I hadn't expected to enjoy it so much, but “Woodface” is a real gem and I could give something I like about every song on here. Bravo.

Some catchy pop hooks and early 90s sounds, but most importantly Jimmy Buffett covered ‘Weather With You’ so plus one star

My kind of 90s music for sure. Didn't think I'd ever heard of these guys, but I've definitely heard that Weather With You song a bunch.

great album family friendly

J'ai adoré cet album dont je n'attendais pas grand chose. Tout l'inverse du virus LedZep4 somme toute, qui je le rapelle m'a cloué au lit pendant 4 jours.

Gostei

Tasteful and well composed

The first 8 songs of this album are on pace for a 5 star banger... and then it just sort of meanders off and finishes with a set of both boring and weird tracks. Fall at Your Feet and Four Season in One Day are absolutely beautiful

Enjoyed this, especially the forst few tracks. Got a little cheesy for there in.

Очень неплохая музыка, приземлённая

I have absolutely never heard of this band before. But fuck it's good. 4

What a pleasant surprise.

Double listen - nearly perfect in places, almost too twee in others. Never listened before, couple of truly electric moments.

The Enz of Split Enz became the beginning of something great . Some of their finest tunes of cross Tasman musos .

Awesome album, some real classic stand-out tracks on there. Wasn't sure about All I Ask though, thought it sounded like it belonged on a different album.

Good album, but extremely pedestrian. This is a very generous 4 based in my knowledge of Neil Finn and he amazing song writing skills.

It is one of those intimate secrets that you hold close to your heart, not saying it out loud because you don't fully realise it until it overwhelms you. Neil Finn is one of my favourite songwriters. What a way with words, what a master of melody, what an ability to capture life and time in a bottle.

Crowded House's debut album was one of the first albums I bought way back when I started buying albums with my pocket money. By the time Woodface came around I had moved on to listening to mostly hard rock and metal, so never listened to Woodface except for the singles I heard. I was surprised at how many songs I was familiar with, and overall was a good listen. I will definitely dive into other Crowded House albums i may have missed over the years.

Хороший альбом, насыщенный инструментами

first listen the Beatles of the 90s?

Great album

Love a bit of Crowded House. Half of the 16 tracks are really good and single worthy, four more are good, and the rest are meh. Fall at Your Feet, Whispers and Moans, and Weather With You were my favourites here.

i liked this one a bit

Never heard of this band before. Really close to being a 5/5, but it does get a bit filler-y near the end. There's a lot of great songs here though, "Four Seasons in One Day" is my personal favorite.

This album makes me wish that this band had more hits

Never heard of these guys before but I’m a fan

Nice album with some classics on it

Everywhere you go… you could probably listen to this album

Before this I had never listened to Crowded House except for that hey now HEEEEEY NOOOW song. First observation is how awesome that album cover is. Love it. Chocolate Cake is a pretty fantastic opening track. I am loving the bass tone. It's Only Natural's chorus is less catchy than the verses? but still good. I love the verses. REminds me of Get in Line by BNL Fall at Your Feet - Seriously, maybe it's these headphones? but by god does the bass sound great on this record... Tall Trees - four tracks in and I am 100% sold on this album. This is so great. Weather With You - Harmonies on this track and the drum sounds are outstanding. Whispers and Moans - Some nice synth layers in this The second half of Italian Plastic in particular is just so good. This a really good record!

Pretty fun listen, had a good rhythm and vibe

I fell asleep listening, but from what I did hear it was solid. Ill listen again.

One of the most apt album titles and art. A very good night album.

Almost a 5 for me. This is a very very good listen. I didn't really dislike any song, and most of them I would re-visit in a heartbeat.

Very solid album. Only one or two songs that really stand out and catch your attention. The albums has a great vibe.

The songs on this album are well-crafted pop music. Heck, "Four Seasons in One Day" feels very much like it could have been a Beatles song, and other highlights such as "Weather With You" and "Fall at your Feet" still holding up today.

pretty good love some of them

Bit of a guilty pleasure, enjoyed the album. It's Only Natural, Fall At Your Feet, Weather With You are all amazing and there's a load of quality tracks in between. The hidden track caught me a little off guard mind.

5/14 okay

It was pretty good. I wish they had kept the energy of the first few of songs through the rest of the album, but I'm not going to say I didn't enjoy some of the quieter songs of the second half. Favorite track: Fall At Your Feet

very rustic, reminded me of a road trip out west with harmonica and accordion

Nice, easy listen! Little throwback rock

I liked this more than I expected.

Catchy pop. Good fun. Great in concert too.

A lovely easy listen.

Stop moaning

I don’t know much about Crowded House. I’m digging this album. Easy to listen to, hook-heavy 90’s pop. Kind of reminds me of Toad the Wet Sprocket a bit.

I’ve lived in New Zealand for 8yrs and now listened to one of the best New Zealand albums ever. Not an Aussie album.

En especial me gustaron 'Four Seasons In One Day', 'All I Ask' y 'As Sure As I Am'.

Nice, easy listen. Good for working to or as background music.

It was certainly not the album with the hit on it. It was a solid pop albun with the angst one expects from crowded house, but nothing really stuck out as a single to me.

Wow what a find

Going in, I had no idea who these guys were, but after a couple songs I was absolutely sure they were from Australia or New Zealand. A jangly guitar sound and an intuitive understanding of Western music theory make for songs that are both catchy and beautiful, and for one reason or another they're pretty strong signals for a band being from Oz or NZ. (However, it was a little surprising that these guys weren't from Dunedin.) I'm going with a 4 for now, solely because I'm extremely sparing with my 5s, but there's an extremely strong probability that I bump this up on RateYourMusic a year or two from now. Best song: It's Only Natural was really good, and How Will You Go was a magical closer, although there are a ton to choose from.

1991. Key Songs: Four Seasons In One Day, Fall At Your Feet, Weather With You

While I enjoyed this perfectly fine, I don't feel any urge to revisit the project.

It's a solid album, but nothing special.

Not terrible, but nothing really caught me. Near catchy, but struggles to get there at times. Cringey lyrics abound.

A little surprised to see *this* Crowded House album here, as my impression is that their 1st 2 albums (this was their 3rd) were probably better, so (although I like the group reasonably well) I wouldn't have thought this album would be a candidate for this '1001' group (then again, as we've seen, 1001 is a LOT of albums). Anyway, 3 stars. About as I would have guessed, a few topnotch catchy pop song melodies, and the rest kind of just fair. I own the 1st Crowded House album, which has their 2 biggest/best hits (Something So Strong, Don't Dream It's Over), so that (or a greatest hits compilation) is (IMO) the way to go, with Crowded House (and would have been better choices for this list).

Has some good songs, overall decent. Not as interesting as the cover would suggest.

eh i liked some of the lyrics but thats about it, nothing over the extraordinary compared to other albums too this far. i liked how they wrote "in her soft wind i will whisper, in her warm sun i will glisten". a little poetic and corny but whatever i like mine a little bit cheesy. but what caught my attention first to the album is the first track ngl, its a bit silly and funky. why would someone write a song based on asking if they could ask for another piece of chocolate cake? well overall its an easy to listen song just like every other song so far.

Love Crowded House, an Aussie band that deserved the hype to crack the US.

Some solid 90s feel good music. I enjoyed this listen, definitely a foot tapper.

This is good sounding. Lots of well blended instrumentals and a good vibe. Fall At Your Feet just sounds like it was bound to be successful with radio play. I don't know if I'd listen to this all the time but if I was a producer at that time and heard this I'd sign them in a second. I like the album cover somewhat.

Has the energy of a pretty good local bar band. Lot's of late Beatles, or post Beatles vibe. The start of Weather with You reminds me of the start of While My Guitar Gently Wheeps. This is fine. I'll round up from a 2.5

I remember this got rave reviews upon release. This is my first listen however there's not much to get excited by. I'm aware of the hits and they are mostly good songs but some of the other tracks are very poor in comparison. Average at best

Dispatches from the last optimistic time on earth seriously it sounds like when you used to only have to care about relationships and feelings and humans and not the world ending

I liked this

it’s fine

Well-crafted. Some belters, some MoR. Second half gets boring.

Chocolate Cake was a risky opener for its time but funny to this American. Unfortunately, the music drifted from there toward adult contemporary/soft rock. This is a group that peaked in the 80s with Don't Dream It's Over, and others have mentioned 90s groups like Better Than Ezra and Toad the Wet Sprocket for comparison—maybe for Something So Strong, but not for this album. The later tracks sounded like The Avett Brothers to me. In total, this is one of the more complex 3s I've scored—not bad, not great, and mostly not memorable.

This is a perfectly fine album. Very lightweight, but that’s not a criticism, and the singles have become part of the British musical wallpaper. Unlikely to seek it out, but also unlikely to turn it off if it is on.

Last night, I accidentally played "Woodface" on a slightly higher speed, making it seem off. At normal speed, it's just fine; nothing but a decent 90s album. "Fall at Your Feet" is my favourite from "Woodface". After that, you get a 3-track streak of filler, broken by "Four Seasons in One Day". "Fame Is" was almost my favourite, but the chorus ruined it. 3 stars for "Woodface".

Fall at Your Feet Weather with You Four Seasons in One Day

Some good some bad. 3

I liked it. It was a nice listening album.

If Neil Finn is good enough for Fleetwood Mac, he's good enough for me. I really liked this one. Not every track is a winner, but there's enough good ones to make this an enjoyable listen.

A few cool songs, a couple I could do without. Like a mix of Elliott Smith and The Cure, with some 80s ballad style added in for good measure.

I didn't have high expectations for an entire album of Crowded House music, when it didn't even include "Don't Dream it's Over". This album was mostly a pretty solid listen, and I was surprised to know I knew a few of the tracks on the album. I mostly liked this album. The only track that I absolutely hated was "All I Ask". The song sounded like a very schmaltzy Christmas song. I will skip the track on any future listens to this record.

the last part of "how will you go/i'm still here” jumpscared me, i really fucking thought it was over, and BAM, wtf hahaha

Certified Jason’s Deli Classic. It’s like a combination of R.E.M. and… ummm Dave U2? 6/10

I'm only on the third song, so maybe it gets better, but what the hell is this? It's kind of like easy listening? It sounds like a less shitty Eagles. It sounds like if Sheryl Crow was a boy. It sounds like an album they made in a weekend to honor a bad contract. It sounds like the rejected soundtrack to 50 First Dates.

good album, worth a listen

Yeah it was good and fun and reminded me of the indie music I listened to in college a lot but it's way older which is just cool!

For me Crowded House was one hit wonder from the 1980’s. So it was news to me that they released music in the 90’s. This album sounded like it could have been a Squeeze record. Enjoyable enough but not what I expected.

Yo tmb tengo sexy pants and a sausage dog. Hubieron varias que me gustaron y es más como un 3.5 tirando a más.

Toffe vibes

Not bad…. Nothing relevant

Normalillo

Pretty good

the hidden track was the best thing on it

Хз, неплохо, не круто, но и не отстой.

The album was a mixed bag. Some really good songs, and some meh songs.

Oh, to have chocolate cake, sexy pants, and a sausage dog

Pleasantly poppy rock album with quirky lyrics here & there that's better than it ought to be. No, Weather with You is not the best song. I liked Chocolate Cake & There Goes God. God apparently wears sexy pants & has a sausage dog. Who knew? 3 Album cover review: The Necronomicon looks it's having the best day ever!

I think I'm a bit prejudiced against Crowded House because they were on the radio constantly at my first Saturday job. It's nice but feels a bit bland for me.

I think it was pretty average pop rock album. I liked a few songs, "Tall Trees", "Weather With You" and "Whispers And Moans". It had slight Prefab Sprout vibes to me (one of my favorite bands) but it also seemed a little generic for the time.

catchy but not in an earworm way. good background music, got a lot of work done while listening. not sure what makes it "must listen before you die" material but i guess every album on the list cant be incredibly interesting or innovative.

5/10… australian rock / kiwi pop / *1991

I liked the chocolate cake song and the line about God and a sausage was pretty amusing. This was catchy but forgettable.

A quality album with some good tunes. I can't put my finger one why they've never quite been to my taste.
