Reviews (page 2 of 8)

Oh, there are so many memories with this one. This is a very personal and special album for me. The Finn brothers are incredibly talented and this album showcases their lovely harmonies and amazing writing. I can't name a favorite song because I love this entire album. "I want you to know I feel completely at ease. Read me like a book that's fallen down between your knees, please, let me have my way with you."

I listened to this album a lot in the 90s, the third Crowded House album. This comes after their best known hit 'Don't Dream It's Over' but also had a number of hit singles in the UK before splitting in 1996 with a Greatest Hits album. Neil Finn was one of the premier songwriters of this era when it comes to writing this sort of stuff, melodic adult oriented soft rock and the lyrics are thoughtful and clever. Opening song 'Chocolate Cake' is a thinly veiled piss take of junk American culture (The excess of fat on your American bones, will cushion the impact as you sink like a stone) whilst gorgeous love songs abound with 'Fall at your Feet' and 'As Sure as I Am' and 'She Goes On' is a tribute to their late mother. Meanwhile, 'Whispers and Moans' is high erotica next to the more straightforward 'Four Seasons In One Day'. And we haven't even mentioned 'It's Only Natural' and singalong 'Weather with You' yet. I used to think this album was a bit front loaded and the best known songs are in the first half, but there are hidden gems all the way. Their best album is either this, or underrated last album Together Alone. Strongly recommend.

Some excellent songs with a couple of filler tracks. Enjoyed listening to this, I’ve heard a lot of the songs previously on their Greatest Hits album but it was nice to hear this one in its entirety for the first time. Also happy to hear an album from my part of the world on this list.

Had this on CD . Very underrated band

Bit of a soft spot for this one - even if it drifts off a bit towards the end. Great songwriting, beautiful harmonies, like an audio hug.

Love this album

So much beautiful tunes and songs that keep popping on your head; I think my 5 rate it's mainly because this is the sort of music that always make you feel good, you know? Like a medicine that puts you back on track, no side effects, just great

One of my favourites.

Australia continues it's run of great alt rock albums. This one is a little front loaded, but every song is excellent. I really enjoyed this one. Probably not the most worthy of this list, but a good one to listen to anyways.

Initial thoughts. I love this. This is excellent. I ended up listening to the whole thing instead of doing what I had planned. I loved this.

Only really knew this band from the one song that managed to break into the states, so call me surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

I’m at a 5. I’ve been desperate for some nice ‘90s alt-rock to pop up on this list; that Matchbox 20 / Goo Goo Dolls / Third Eye Blind sort of vibe, and while this doesn’t go all the way in terms of getting to that style, I’m totally fine that it doesn’t. This feels like a good blend of that style to come by the late '90s, and the sort of base that R.E.M. & others set in the mid-late ‘80s, and it’s a style that works very very well for me. Someone else might dismiss this album as cookie-cutter alt rock, and that’s fine; it’s not everyone’s taste. For me, though, this album is scratching an itch that I’ve been wanting to scratch for a while. I knew of Crowded House, but only in the sense of “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, which feels like a sort of quintessential cheesy ‘80s ballad. I’m very glad they showcased a lot more of their range here, and in a super fruitful way – lots of clever & witty lines here, with a lot of strong imagery in between to still set a tone, even if some references might jump past the head a bit. I think the lyricism on this album is at its best when it’s at its most earnest, like on “Fall at Your Feet”, “Four Seasons in One Day”, or “She Goes On”. Instrumentally, while it’s still pretty guitar heavy (this is a rock album after all), they find good ways to shake it up, with a sort of Phil Collins-esque variety at times, jumping from style to style yet still feeling coherent. A track like “Weather With You” can pull out some African influenced percussion, just in the same way that “As Sure As I Am” can break out an accordion, or a sort of Dylan-esque harmonica on “Italian Plastic” – they all fit within each track really well, and as such, they don’t feel like an abrupt shift in styles, which helps a lot. Neil & Tim Finn have great fucking vocals by the way. You just have to hear them harmonize to understand that, but there’s lots of fun vocal structures here that are infectiously catchy. Overall, I just really enjoyed it. A little bit plain for some, and I can’t fault that at all, but this is a style I’m just a sucker for, & one that I think needs a little bit more representation on the list. There’s not a bad track here to my ears, though it is a little front-loaded on the singles, with much of the back half noticeably being less strong, but still good regardless. I feel like I might need to hear more Crowded House, to at least shake the perception of them as just the “Don’t Dream It’s Over” band. I’m glad this is on the list, and it’s a pretty strong 5 for me.

Really surprised by this one, great vocals, great music!

In retrospect, a great band!

Incredible lyrics, hilarious, good mood and easy listening.

If you want pop this is the bollocks. Great tunes. Great harmonies. Foot tapping beats. Can't want for more.

topzera

Love this record. The Finn Brothers together never disappoint. Incredible songs and impeccable production.

I liked this very much. Clever lyrics, sweet voices, fun tunes. Ummm, I was finishing my dissertation so I missed them. More please!

A band that was continuing in the legacy of the Beatles without straight up ripping them off.

Beautiful album. Fantastic songwriting, great production, harmonies and hits.

Really loved this album! Great lyrics, really beautiful vocals and instruments played nice too!

Brand new artist to me and I loved this! Weird and chill music, easily listened through several times and didn’t have the desire to shut it off. This is what I like about the 1001 project, finding music that you would otherwise miss.

Melodic perfection.

This is an absolute classic. Every track is a banger.

another banger! the more i hear crowded house the more i like them, and this is no exception. fall at your feet is one of my favorite songs of theirs. definitely going to keep bumpin this. favorites: it's only natural, fall at your feet, weather with you, four seasons in one day, fame is

i love finding new old music!

Brilliant.

Increíble

Loved and listened repeatedly when it was new in 1991. Today’s listen brought back memories of those days. Timeless. Beautiful harmonies and lyrics. Love and listen repeatedly in 2025.

Wow! I’d left this album back in the 90s and I’m so happy that it came up on here. What great songs and memories this one brought back. Love it!

Genial y super divertido. Me la pasé muy bien y ya quiero escucharlo veinte veces más. Se va invicto.

Day373 - i could listen to neil finn sing all day. any album with three really good songs is worth this list

Wow, awesome

Another great album that reminds me of my young adult years. This album came out in my college years and was very popular in my area. Maybe it is the nostalgia that makes me rate this higher than some might? I feel like some of this has been hardwired directly into my DNA. I loved every track on this album.

This album has a sentimental meaning to me so it's difficult to judge. These are great songs - not stylistically innovative. Just good to listen to.

Fucking belter of an album.

A brilliant album by a brilliant band

I loved this! Kind of reminded me of REM or XTC, love this kind of upbeat pop-y rock stuff. On a first listen, several of the songs stood out to me (especially Weather With You and Italian Plastic), but on the second listen I added basically all the rest as well.

An all time classic.

I am pretty sure Don't Dream It's Over is the only Crowded House song I know and I am glad to have now listened to an album that does not have that song on it! I enjoyed this album. Looking at some of the track titles had me worried this would be overtly religious but it does an ok job at not going that route. There are some very tongue in cheek lyrics here. Reminds me of REM a bit. No idea they were from a land down under. I loved Four Seasons in One Day but was very sad to hear that song was used as a tribute to their drummer and founding member Paul Hester at performances after he killed himself.

Loved this album, so many great singles while still being cohesive. Really enjoyable.

Cuánto tiempo hacía que no escuchaba As Sure As I Am. Me dejó el cd Marta. Lo tuve durante mucho tiempo. Se lo quise devolver, pero no lo ha querido. Pero si lo quiere, se lo devuelvo. Cuánto tiempo hacía que no escuchaba Italian Plastic.

What an incredible album. Very Beatles ish but with stronger production and a deeper sound. Instrumentals were good, the harmonies even better. Fun lyrics - it starts off with a bang on Chocolate Cake and just keeps going all over the place. Musical roller coaster.

Fantastic. Perfect encapsulation of the early 90s.

pleasant surprise enjoyed it 4.6/5

Very controlled and well produced pop rock (?). Again I find myself often listening instead of it just being in the background.

So far I'm liking it. Several tracks in. Chocolate Cake was an odd choice for the first song lol All I Ask isy new favorite song!

Probably in my top 5 albums. Half a dozen perfect pop songs most bands would kill for 1 of. So catchy you can’t help but sing along, but not just dumb simple, layers of depth underneath. Love it.

First time hearing this group - will listen to more.

Crowded House - Wood face Crowded House's third album released in 1991. This album includes both Finn Brothers as Tim told Neil that they could use some of the songs they wrote for the next Finn Brothers album if he could join the band. It's up for debate if he was really serious about that, but in the end, he was added to their lineup for this album. Lots of great songs on this one, with my favorites being, Fall at Your Feet, She Goes On, & Chocolate Cake. The 90's were a strange time. Researching this album reminded me of the old CD staple of including a hidden track that would play several seconds after the last song listed on the track list. I remember putting the CD in and seeing how many tracks were listed to see if I could tell if there was a track at the end. If you didn't know it was going to be in there, it would be a real treat when it popped on, except if you had to wait the 30 seconds of silence to get to it. It was a simpler time when things like that was a huge deal! 5/5

I didn't think I had ever heard of the band but the music immediately felt familiar and very catchy. I like the sound a lot. I don't know any of these songs but something made me think "Young Einstein" and sure enough they are on that soundtrack. Also I figured out the Finn Brothers opened for Indigo Girls and 10,000 Maniacs at Red Rocks in 1989, and that was the only thing I enjoyed from that show; made enough of an impression that I still remember. Anyway, this album is right up my alley.

What a band and sound. How can you say soothing and happy, fun and good nostalgia is two words? crowded house. Arguable culturally defining for the 80s and 90s and even important to the identity of NZ and Australian music. Most Aussie probably think of them as Aussies. Their last ever concert was a free gift to the nation at the steps of the Opera House. It was like a national event. But very mixed feelings for this album for me was their "sell out" to market themselves to American tastes. It is glib and pop and departed from what I felt was their authentic roots. So "chocolate cake " for me is feeding an American consumer taste for sweet and familiar crap, right down the forces references to Elvis & 7 eleven. But a great band. Maybe not their finest album or reflective of the best of their self co structured sound. It's the one that opened doors to international sales. I will be interested to read what their influences were and how they Influenced music, as I'm ignorant on that point. My 4 stars is for the better songs, like sweeping "fall at your feet" and the eternal "take the weather with you" and songs like "4 seasons in one day" about Melbourne weather and more... but maybe not the album as such. Love the Wookie on the cover though :-). There is something so nice about hearing them, isn't there, eh? ;-)

Really enjoyed this one. So much more than ‘Fall at your feet’ and ‘The Weather’

Cuánto tiempo hacía que no escuchaba As Sure As I Am. Me dejó el cd Marta. Lo tuve durante mucho tiempo. Se lo quise devolver, pero no lo ha querido. Pero si lo quiere, se lo devuelvo. Cuánto tiempo hacía que no escuchaba Italian Plastic.

Neil Finn is among the great pop songwriters of the late 20th century Difford & Tilbrook, Costello, Westerberg and Collingwood & Schlesinger. Crowded House's biggest US hits (the two songs everyone knows, all time classics Don't Dream It's Over and Something So Strong) came a couple of albums before this one but this is their most consistent work and their best album.

I really enjoyed this album. Great compositions, entertaining, good instrumentation. Very interesting and varied

Classic NZ Rock already in my saved albums list. Nothing new or exciting or the first album. Actually so many songs that already know.

Very very good! Super relaxing music

Hate the cover Great album. Only contains 1 dud imo

Another one of my car CDs. Definitely stronger first half than second half. Maybe I only listen to the first half - I didn't recognise anything after Fame Is. Either way, because of the strength of the first half of the album (Chocolate Cake all the way to There Goes God) - solid 5 stars.

It's a great album.

Simply amazing album, way ahead of its time. Perfect road trip album!

This is some stuff that I really got into the early 90s. So I’m going to be biased.

Good jams!

touched my heart so well

One of my favorite albums from my favorite band.

Perfect pop song after perfect pop song. Sure, it's radio friendly, sure I guess it's kinda M.O.R. but, there's just something about Crowded House that means this doesn't matter. They stride above such concerns. Must be the quality. So it's either this or Together Alone which is their best album, I have a very strong soft spot for Together Alone as it just came out when I was buying album after album, but this is a very close second for me.

You've got to love Crowded House.

Everyone knows this one, hasn't aged a bit!

This list is letting me appreciate local bands on a global scale. Love this album. Always pleased or seduced who ever listens.

Lots of childhood memories. Love what tims vocals bring to this album, but I understand the dynamics where he couldn’t bring himself to be a supporting character in his little brothers band.

Cuánto tiempo hacía que no escuchaba As Sure As I Am. Me dejó el cd Marta. Lo tuve durante mucho tiempo. Se lo quise devolver, pero no lo ha querido. Pero si lo quiere, se lo devuelvo. Cuánto tiempo hacía que no escuchaba Italian Plastic.

Love the sounds of this album. Definetely earning a place among my favorites.

this is a 5 for me! woof.

Like a fine teak cabinet full of treasures.

Mooie ballads afgewisseld met leuke popdeuntjes voorzien van respectievelijke mooie en leuke teksten. 'There goes God' bracht een glimlach op het gezicht

Love this album Crowded House at there best

5/5 Really nice and relaxing album

Interesting way of rock

Awesome. Exactly the kind of stuff I had hoped to discover here. Except for "Weather With You", I hadn't heard any song on this album, despite its quality.

Excellent

Me sorprendió, muy bueno.

very good

This album starts out with a bang with "Chocolate Cake;" It's catchy, light, and fun. The album sags a little bit in places but never breaks, carrying that fun and lighthearted tone throughout. The vocals work really well together and the backing instrumentals are different enough between each song that it doesn't ever feel like any two songs blur together. Some of the songs are even beautiful and solemn, like "Four Seasons in One Day," but they don't detract from the positive feeling the album gives you.

I can't believe I've never heard of this band before what is wrong with me

Enjoyed this quite a bit - more than expected. Favorite track was as sure as I am.

Muy buen pop, melodías agradables.

An 80s album that sounds distinctly of its era, but doesnt rely on synths and electronic drums. It instead relies on colorful lyrics, nice harmonies, and super clean production. Great stuff!

Absolutely not what I thought this album would be. Added it to my library after listening.

Mooooo

So many brilliant songs. Some crap ones too but the brilliant ones are brilliant enough that I’m a happy customer.

Very catchy. Natural, Fall, and Weather With You are excellent

This is my first time listening to this album but I feel like I’ve heard 4-5 of these songs before. I enjoyed it!

Great tracks.

Great mix of genres. We need more of this.

Cool unique sound and interesting songs

Beautiful jazz

Discovered some fun songs on the second side. I already knew the big hits from this one, not all songs are great but nice listen. 1. Fall At Your Feet 2. Weather With You 3. Four Seasons In One Day

I had only ever heard It's Only Natural, Fall at Your Feet, and Weather With You and have LOVED them for as long as I can remember. Was honestly let down with the rest of the album, although I didn't hate it. Still worth 4 stars solely for those three songs

in the car aux when im alone. fame is is really good

Listenable

Lovely, melodic and easy to listen to.

Relatable lyrics.

me recordó a the police pero diferente, me gustó

In many ways this feels like a discount REM album, and yet I found myself suprised at how much I was enjoying it. The withdrawn style of singing sometimes gets monotonous. Songs like Fall At Your Feet *work* for me. It's nothing exciting, but if it came on the radio my foot would be tapping a little bit! I guess the big thing I learned out of this is that a discount REM is still REM enough for me to get some enjoyment out of it. Weather with You also has some really great instrumentation and vocal lines to the point I can ignore that the lyrics are nonesense.

I enjoyed this more than I expected given the album cover.

Melodic, harmonic, with well written and well arranged songs. I didn't actually realise that I knew so many Crowded House songs, let alone about 5 songs from this album. I can't knock the qulity but it's still a bit middle of the road Radio 2 music for old people. But since I'm now 62 I guess I'll have to rate it a 4.

NZ/Aus represented! Kind of reminded me of men at work, but blander. An ok alternative album, didn't hate it. 4* Highlights: fall at your feet

We hebben die CD.

Tää oli kyllä kiva!

Tää oli hyvä! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

cool album cover, 90’s beatles, noticeable theme in early 90’s music that emulates 60’s rock with it’s own modern grit

Really nice, I was expecting nothing and got a hidden gem :)

I enjoyed this album. Smooth voices, interesting lyrics, a good sound.

I didn't know what to expect going in here but was impressed. The songs were memorable, the instrumentals were impressive and overall it didn't sound too dated. 3.5/5 -> 4/5

Ah I’ve always been fond of this album. The melodies and lyrics take me back to a time and a place long ago.

сначала мне как будто не зашел альбом но я была и не в том расположении духа потом переслушала и очень даже хорошенький больше всего понравились fall at your feet и four seasons in one day

Very good. I like some of their songs, but I after listening to this entire album. I enjoy them even more. Definitely worth a listen.

4 good stuff

Lots of silly (but fun lyrics), but liked the melodies, harmonies, and music. Enjoyable listen.

It was really good 👍. There is not much else to say about it. Overall, I would give it a 4.1/5!

Liked it quite a lot

Enjoyed this one, nice, easy listening pop/rock music. Weather With You was my fav song of the album. Italian Plastic (my fav first listen) and Fall At Your Feet were my other highlights

“Fall at Your Feet” is a great song and “Weather With You” is OK. Rest of this album is blah.

worth checking out. im surprised 'don't dream it's over' is their most and only popular song. these are just as good!

Nostalgia is carrying this one heavily for me. This is the sound of childhood holidays and long car journeys through France. Weather with you, whilst slightly nonsensical is good fun and the janglyness means I'll always love it. Fall at your feet, Four Seasons in One Day, Chocolate Cake all enjoyable but probably not worthy of the 4 I give them.

What a cool album! This bridges the gap between 80s post punk and 90s Brit pop.

Well, shit, a surprisingly enjoyable listen, with that signature blend of introspection and hooks. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - It's Only Natural - Fall At Your Feet - Weather With You - Four Seasons In A Day

We have this album on CD I think. It’s not really my thing, but my wife likes it and there was some stuff I could remember. Finn can clearly write nice music and there’s some variety here. Most of which I enjoyed enough. And some of whip surprised me with how strong it is - beyond the obvious hits. So, yeah, this is half decent.

I was reticent but I actually really started to fall in love with these. Will definitely revisit.

Bright and poppy alternative rock from the early 90's. This has similar traits as bands like the Jayhawks, Matthew Sweet, Gin Blossoms, etc. The Beatles provide the foundation -- I think the Finn brothers must have listened a lot. Definitely 4.5 for me

This was a nice group of songs. Good melodies and harmonies were present in almost every track. Its not the most ground breaking thing I've ever heard but that's ok. I had no issue with this album though I'm not sure I'd ever need to hear it again.

I love Crowded House. Their greatest hits album is a perfect album. This has some tracks I'd not heard and a couple that are amazing, will listen again.

I wanted to add 'Fall at your feet' to the 1001 best of the best playlist, but if I'm honest the album is a 4 for me, even though I'd love to give it a 5 (I think I've been a bit fast a loose with my 5s recently!) There's a few classics on here which I will always love, even if they're a bit over played here in Australia. Extra love for being Australian/NZ, not much makes me patriotic except music!

I remember an old episode of top gear where James May is racing a yacht off the coast of New Zealand against Jeremy Clarkson in a Honda Civic along the coast and Clarkson makes a comment that the only thing on the radio is Crowded House. Understandable. This is a good album. 4.0/5.0: Great

It's showing its age a bit, but a very easy listen. Weather With You is an excellent Sunday morning song. Will come back and listen again.

неплохой легкий альбом для прогулки. Пара-тройка известных хитов. Бжижайший референс - R.E.M.

enjoyed this more than expected. quite a solid album, i'd be happy to revisit and have it in my collection

I needed some to decide how to vote for this album. On the one side a lot of really nice songs but on the other side somehow not really hitting it. Definitely too good for a 3 but was not sure if I wanted to give it a 4. So listened to it again ... and decided for the 4.

Favorite Track: Fall At Your Feet

Growing up I thought this was the kind of middle of the road drivel that old people like your big cousin or that "cool" teacher listened too. Now I'm old I have to say this is rather good.

Weather with You is one of my all time favorite tracks. I was geared up to give this a 5 considering that and Fall at your Feet. I just couldn’t with the opening track. Leave that one out and this album is better.

Me sorprendió. La verdad que es el primero de estos discos que no tenía en el radar. Nunca escuché nada de esta banda, y ahora tengo ganas de buscar otros discos para investigar un poco. Que fuente inagotable de música la decada del 90.

Reminded me of Cage the Elephant, which is always a plus. Standouts were Weather with You, It's Only Natural, and Four Seasons in One Day (which got added to my playlist).

My two experiences with Crowded House go with their two biggest singles that are not on Woodface. Something So Strong as one of those songs I heard too much working at a grocery store with terrible acoustics, and Don't Dream It's Over which is more of a nostalgic song I heard quite a bit in my childhood from having VH1 Classic on in the background. Woodface is what you would expect a commercial rock album in 1991 would sound like, but with better songwriting. The Finn brothers are properly acclaimed from their home country but aside from their biggest international hits, you wouldn't really know the full depth to that without hearing Woodface. I do wish they had more of that organ sound from their earlier albums, it helped drive the emotional ties better in my opinion. Pretty important album from the Australian rock scene to be notably "must heard before you die", and I can sort of see that. There's much better stuff in the land down under though.

Fine album.

„there goes god in his sexy pants with his sausage dog“ is one of the best lines ever written

This impressed me a lot more than I thought it would. I was already vaguely familar with Crowded House, but for some reason I always just brushed them off as just another generic rock band I shouldn't waste my time with. But weirdly enough, their music still feels like it should fit into that category, as there really isn't anything specific that I can point to on this album that actually makes it particularly good, but for some reason I just really liked it.

it isn't a five; it has skips. but I fell in love with this album. "as sure as i am." 𖥔 ݁ ˖

A fun album with witty and comedic lyrics but it gets bloated near the end

Extra star for my Kiwi bois. However, I have beef with Neil Finn that I won't get into here.

Better than I expected. Would call this more alt rock from early 90’s

Awesome, definitely want to revisit this one

This one caught me off guard, I liked it a lot more than I expected. Just a more enjoyable listen overall.

A product of its time, definitely, but also an entertaining album. The production shines in specific moments. Thanks for including! 3.5/5

Enjoyed this one

Got some fond memories of this as my dad had it on cassette. Haven't heard some of it in decades and some of it came flooding back. Really front loaded in my opinion but still pretty good. Neil Finn has a great voice and this is their best work.

Jon Gracey was right, Crowded House are definitely more than a one hit wonder

Good, straight-ahead pop/rock....sounds Beatle-ish, and Neil Finn has a mild trace of John Lennon, and/or the one guy from Squeeze. I'm always a sucker for 3 minute songs with jangly guitars, so this is a 3.5 that I'll round up.

Probably a good album, didn’t really catch my attention. More of background music but not in a bad way.

I listened to these guys a lot back in the day.

Track 1. (Chocolate Cake) fire. glad to see the first New Zealand rep in this album list. 8.7/10 Track 2. (It’s Only Natural) 8/10 Track 3. (Fall At Your Feet) 8.2/10 Track 4. (Tall Trees) 8.1/10 Track 5. (Weather With You) 8.5/10 Track 6. (Whispers And Moans) 8.5/10 Track 7. (Four Seasons In One Day) 8/10 Track 8. (There Goes God) 8.2/10 Track 9. (Fame Is) 8.4/10 Track 10. (All I Ask) 9/10 Track 11. (Sure As I Am) 8/10 Track 12. (Italian Plastic) 7.8/10 Track 13. (She Goes On) 8/10 Track 14. (How Will You Go/Im Still Here-Melody) 8.2/10 Overall Score: 8.2/10

One of the more varied alt rock/pop rock albums I've listened to on this list, surprisingly with a bit more lyrical levity than some of the others. Still not exactly my cup of tea, but I could see myself coming back to this or at least recommending it to the right person. Highlight: Weather With You Lowlight: Whispers And Moans Surprise Hit: Four Seasons In One Day

Smooth grooves, nice harmonies, tight production. This sounds almost like it could be a lost Squeeze album (meant as a compliment). The second half (what would be side 2 back when albums had sides) is slower and more melancholy - still good, but less interesting to me. Still, overall a very pleasant surprise from a band I only knew from "Don't Dream It's Over". Will definitely be digging deeper into their discography. Favorite Tracks: "Chocolate Cake", "Whispers and Moans"

Nice. Really nice.

Fall At Your Feet and Weather With You are super!

Premier album de 2026, et le cinquième dernier avant le 1000 album. Je vais me tourner vers le positivisme et affirmer que j’ai aimé cet album, sans critique additionnelle!

am I a philistine? maybe. Really catchy palatable melodies, maybe the TEENIEST TINIEST bit meagre towards the end but nothing worth kicking a fuss about, what’s not to like here. nothing life-changing, but a really sweet album nonetheless

i am not rating it 5 starts because it fell off a little in the end. anyway, its safe to say my ears were blessed today

My knowledge of Crowded House was close to 0 before Woodface ! Enjoyed the songs, thevoice and the melodies

I enjoyed this one.

this album cover hella ugly but the music slaps

Nothing mind blowing but I liked the sound of it. The face on the cover makes me feel paternal for whatever reason.

They cooked here

Album 997 of 1089 Woodface - Crowded House (1991) Rating : 4 / 5 I went into this one with no expectations at all - no real idea of who they were or what I was about to hear - and came away genuinely pleased. This is just a solid, well-crafted album from start to finish. There are no gimmicks here, no studio tricks trying to grab your attention. It’s simply good songwriting, played well, and allowed to breathe. The sound sits comfortably in that laid-back, middle-of-the-road space, but in the best way - relaxed without being boring, polished without being slick. What really stood out to me were the reflective, introspective lyrics. Nothing overwrought or dramatic, just thoughtful songs that unfold naturally as you listen. It’s the kind of album that doesn’t demand your attention but rewards you when you give it some. Quietly confident, well balanced, and very easy to enjoy. Good stuff here.

We love Crowded House down here but, if I'm being totally honest, not all the songs on Woodface are winners.

At Your Feet, Tall Trees, Weather With You, Whispers and Moans, All I Ask

Chocolate Cake starts this off with great Carole King sounding piano chording, bam bam drums, love the vocals, love this song. I wish the album stayed in that rock and roll groove, but sadly it goes softer, more Byrds sound again but not the good kind, and instead of interesting the vocal harmonies just sounds repetitive and nasally for the next 6 songs. There Goes God gets interesting, Fame Is is not so bad, and then we're into a completely different approach to ballads for the rest of side two that I'm really kind of liking. Although side 1 is a a 2 for me I'm giving it a 4 just so I remember to check it out again for side 2.

Don't have too much to say, nice easy listening all the way through, had me coming back for more even though it wasn't doing anything too crazy. They honestly didn't need to do anything crazy and I'm glad they didn't, although the little secret song segment at the end of the album was nuts lol. Felt like I had heard Weather Man somewhere before... deep in my memory that chorus had been heard before. Favorite song on the album for sure. 10/10 album art, really liking this one, something about the grin... Love the painting quality it has. Definitely a new favorite album cover.

These guys are just so good. What a different sound and the harmonies are amazeballs.

A good album, I liked Chocolate Cake, Weather With You and Fame Is the most.

This was an excellent album I never knew existed! Somehow I missed this - could've been that 1991 was the yeat I graduated high school and then started college...

Nice groove, very mellow

Solid stuff here. I enjoyed it.

Y'know, normally I don't like to write reviews as responses to other reviews. It's as I've said before: it's ultimately one-sided, and I doubt anybody comes to these reviews to read rebuttals like this. But, oh, there are some reviews where, dang it, I just can't help it. And this review is specifically addressed to the person who compared this album to the banality of evil. Specifically, that listening to this album is (and let me get the quote correct here) "akin to witnessing a little old lady being mugged and quickstepping [...] away because you don't want to get involved". Look. Buddy, pal, friend of mine. Shall we be serious for a second? Would you mind? Just for a moment? You are absolutely over-exaggerating. This album is not that bad (or even really bad at all). You're better off saving your unreadable ALL CAPS rants for an album that's actually worth it, and not this slice of pretty fine 90's pop rock. Let's be real here: Crowded House does have some songwriting chops. Are they Lennon-McCartney, like I've seen someone write down on Wikipedia? I don't think so, but for the standards of pop rock, I think they're as darn good as they could be. The melodies can be pretty, the harmonies are often fantastic, the instrumentation is nicely varied ... not a lot of it makes me jump out of my seat screaming "**THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF THE 90'S**," but if I'd discovered this album at a younger, more impressionable age, I could absolutely see myself gushing and then some about this group. Heck, from some opinions I've seen, this isn't even their best album (and I might hafta check that out, honestly). If I have any criticisms, they're relatively minor. There are some songs that just ... I'unno, aren't as good as some of the others? And it's not that this album needs to be chopped down; in an era of CD bloat it's a miracle this thing is only 48 minutes long. But I think it could've stood to be just that **little bit** tighter. And maybe that could've pushed me over the edge into absolutely loving it, I'unno. Really, I can't hear any reason why anyone would be **that hard** on this thing. Maybe if you just really, and I am absolutely **despise** the bands that got played on hip 90's sitcoms. I can see it: they sort of sound like the kind of band that'd get added to a sitcom soundtrack for some indie cred, where upon they'd proceed to get overplayed to death by the show's fans. But if they were included somewhere, I guess I'm glad I missed that show. I mean, look, I wouldn't tell you this album's terribly special. But if you're in the mood for some good tunes with some good melodies, hey, go right ahead. I enjoyed my time with it, and I bet you would as well. It gets my hearty seal of approval. Call it the "not-quite-banality of being-pretty-darn-alright," I guess.

Rugby, wine, kiwifruit, Crowded House, some of the many things NZ has given the world. This is an excellent pop album.

Bangers were front loaded but still a classic

That was really nostalgic! The songs from “Wood Face” are pretty much exactly what I remember hearing when I turned on the radio as a teenager. Of course, I despised all the music on the radio back then, but to be honest, some of it - including Crowded House - wasn't that bad. Even after 30 years, “Weather With You” and “Four Seasons In One Day” stuck in my head, while I liked “Chocolate Cake” and “It's Only Natural” without being able to remember ever hearing them before. Yes, “Wood Face” is a fairly typical pop album of its time, but in my opinion, it sounds so generic precisely because it is one of the best of its kind and thus helped define the typical sound of that era.

This is definitely the best so far of the many many 80's British new wave white guys trying to transition to the 90's sound albums on this list.

I enjoyed Woodface quite a lot, quite a bit more than i thought i would have. This album really reminds me a lot of a lot of British pop-rock albums which is a bit odd seeing that this band is partly from Australia and the other part from New Zealand but it is still a sound i welcome. It is another one of those albums that is just so nice and pleasant to listen to but that isn't to say that it doesn't get really lively at points which it absolutely does. There also wasn't a single bad song off this record as they were all very enjoyable. I don't think there is really much left i can say so all i'll say is that it is a very enjoyable album. Best Song: Chocolate Cake Worst Song: How Will You Go/I'm Still Here (Medley)

the album was okay, but feels like on an LSD trip but not fully a bad one. not a common listen for me, its a bit like a fine wine,

(86/100)

Really interesting album, you can clearly hear both its inspirations and its influence. Was gonna just dismiss this as a fine album but I listened a second time and honestly this is a great little indie rock album, I really enjoyed this.

Muy chulo

I had never heard of this band prior to this album. and what a shame that is! It seems I've been missing out. It is perhaps simplistic, but it is beautiful and so pleasing to the ears. The vocals are gorgeous, and there's not a single "skippable" track that comes to mind. This was all around solid and a breath of fresh air. I was a big fan.

Nice! Well good! True to its roots but its own thing!

Great.

заебись, мне понравилось

Already from 1991? I'm getting old. Still nice music.

Every time I get an album my parents used to have in the car, I feel like it takes away from the critically acclaimed vibe lmao. But still an enjoyable listen

smart, catchy, hook-filled McCartney-esque pop

Enjoyed this much much more than I expected to. It really sounds like they listened a lot to the Beatles like we all did but really understood them on a deep level and learned to write from them in a way that many try and few manage. Simon and garfunkel creep into that sound too I guess. I kept wondering if it felt corny or twee or too on the nose but the quality carried it through at every step.

perfect plezierig pop plaatje

This was a very nice simple pop album. The big hitting singles are great pop songs, I can't resist Weather With You. 4/5

Great song writing, interesting lyrics and brilliantly performed. A great album!

What are they talking about??

Nostalgic

Weird last song but overall easy to listen to and enjoyable & catchy

Omg. Really love “Fall at your feet”. This Album has amazing singles overall. 4,5

🎶 everywhere you go, always take the weather 🎶

Don't think I've heard of this band before but liked them. Songs: Fall At Your Feet, Weather With You, Four Seasons In One Day

Enjoyed these guys. They cooked on this one. 3.5

Crowded House might be Australian, but they really give off Beatles vibes, like what the Fab Four could have sounded like if they were still around in the late 80s or early 90s. The melodies are catchy, the harmonies are smooth, and the whole thing has this easy, feel-good flow. “Weather With You” and “Fall at Your Feet” are the big standouts, both packed with hooks that stick in your head without getting annoying. The Finn brothers have great chemistry, and you can hear it in how natural the songs feel. All in all, Woodface is just a really solid album. Nothing too flashy, just smart songwriting and great execution. It’s the kind of record you can throw on anytime and enjoy from start to finish. Favorite song: Italian Plastic

i felt so relieved after hearing an original version of the song i’ve only heard the shitty cover of at my work radio

It’s the harmonies. Crowded House formed from the Ashes of Split Enz when Tim left the band he had formed with Phil Judd to go solo. Neil who had joined Split Enz later started Crowded House. Tim and Neil singing together is what makes this record of melodic acoustic pop exceptionally well recorded and produced resonate with the listener. The Songwriting is solid and it sounds like a band having fun. Many records lose their energy by the midpoint - not so here. Whispers and Moans, Four Seasons in One Day, and There Goes God are a savory middle point following the singles It’s Only Natural and Fall at your Feet. Not a duff track on the record. As I listen to the record now, what is striking is the guitar tones on this record. Clean with a warm glow the guitar highlights the vocal harmonies with the rhythm section always in the pocket. The only outlier on the record is the crooner throwback All I Ask. Still enjoyable, it changes the sound to a more orchestral/chamber pop vibe. I might have finished the album with this song as it might be a better placement especially if it came after the wonderful How Will You Go/I’m Still Here. Anyway, that’s just nitpicking. Terrific pop record. Better for Sunday morning than Saturday night.

Interesting record by Interesting band

Pretty good album.

"You know more Crowded House songs that you think," I thought I would really like this but the lyrics are a bit nonsensical. It improves on a second listen while reading the lyrics.

Crowded with good tunes. Nice and varied, a couple of bangers. Can't think of an explicit reason it should not be a 5, other than I don't feel it quite lands in the way a 5 should.

Very creative

Paar bösi bangers "wather with you" und "four seasons in one day" aber au paar egal songs!

Neil and Tim together is an unbeatable combo. Fantastic album across the board. Pop-rock with gorgeous melodies and harmonizing of a calibre only matched by luminaries such as the Beatles.

It’s me, I’m Mrs Hairy Legs

Clever, catchy rock from the Kiwi/Ozzies.

7/10 a Bit boring

Are the Finn brothers close to the best song writers? Really up there with my favourite albums but just falls shy. Solid 4.5/5

Their best album, just ahead of Temple of Low Men. Favorite track: "Whispers and Moans"

Favorites: Fall at your feet, weather with you, whispers and moans Probably doesn't deserve 4, but I'm a sucker for CH

I grew up on Aussie pub rock thanks to my dad. Crowded House aren’t quite Aussie pub rock I grew up with, I was more The Angels, Australian Crawl, Cold Chisel, Hoodoo Gurus, etc but I know a little bit of them. This was great, turns out I did recognise Weather With You which is a lovely song. This album was right up my alley and I loved it!

"jangle pop". Fun, happy vibes, mixed with some strings towards the end

7/10, i like it butttt, the first half is amazing, but da second one is mid.

This album was great, full of classics I was surprised all came from the same album. Amazingly progressive and produced for something of the era and still holds up today.

This is a hard one to rate. It's a great album with some amazing songs, but it's not exactly timeless outside of maybe 3 songs. Neil Finn has always been an incredible writer and there's some legendary songs on this record (Fall At Your Feet, It's Only Natural, Four Seasons In One Day, to name a few). But there's some odd (if that's the right word) tracks on here too, like the opener "Chocolate Cake", which has some kinda silly lyrics set to an otherwise fantastic song and the bonus track "I'm Still Here"s drunken swagger. I think most surprisingly is this album being included on the list over their self-titled debut. I mean, how many bands hit the scene with a "Don't Dream It's Over"?

Nice energy from the start with some strong songs and fun harmonies.

Mostly good album with a few quite good songs and some forgettable filler

I don’t like adult contemporary, but this was such a pleasant listen, I couldn’t help but enjoy myself on more than one track.

Love to see NZ music represented. Musically this is kind of a late 80s/early 90s college alternative rock vibe. Some of the vocal harmonies is kind of Beatlesesque

Some great songs and really enjoyed it form a band I have never heard of before, but in the end this album is just too long and too similar for large parts of it to be truly great.

some pretty great songs on here that I know. Overall a pretty good album to listen to, with a few duff tracks

I don’t know how I’ve heard so many of these songs, but never knew the band. Perfect 90s vibes

Really enjoyed this one. I like the variety of songs and the harmonies they put together. Subtle but pretty effective

not bad but not in the mood

Somehow missed Crowded House in the late-80’s outside of a few of their hits. This is probably my favorite album of theirs beginning to end.

Wasn't a fan then. Am a fan now. Lovely!

It's goofy, sultry and emotionally dense. Great like all of crowded houses stuff.

Like this.

I’d listen to this again

saw on spotify this band was similar to the police AND fleetwood mac?!? i really liked their sound and didn’t know them beyond the scope of “don’t dream it’s over” and now i’m def a fan. fav was probs four seasons in one day BUT some of them did blend together. not in an unpleasant way though

Very pleasant. Good melodies and vocals 7/10

Some decent songs

I like them.

I'm behind on albums, I just know this was a 4.

Now this is great dad-rock

Always forget how awesome crowded house are!

Woodface is the third studio album from Australian band Crowed House, and is considered their best work. It is listed near the top of several "best Australian albums of all time" lists. The band makes alt-rock that could be a thread of brit pop - melodic, guitar based rock with interesting harmonies. Woodface includes "Weather With You," one of the band's most successful singles, and a great example of the band's work - a catchy pop song, expressed in a few voices in practiced harmony, with interesting rhythms.

Woodface is the sound of effortless songwriting meeting just the right amount of quirk. Neil and Tim Finn’s harmonies are rich and playful, and the album dances between melancholy and brightness without missing a beat. Tracks like Weather With You and Four Seasons in One Day have a timeless, gentle charm, while songs like Chocolate Cake add a wink of weirdness and humour to keep things interesting. I mean what a way to start an album with those lyrics... It’s a melodic, well-crafted album that feels lived-in and warm, with lyrics that are both clever and quietly emotional. Maybe a couple of tracks don’t quite reach the same heights, but overall Woodface is a reminder that pop music can be smart, subtle, and full of heart.

A beautiful album. I've never really gotten into Crowded House, which is probable equal parts slightly-before-my-time and Australian tall poppy syndrome, but virtually every Aussie and Kiwi knows "It's Only Natural", "Fall at Your Feet" and "Weather With You". Fortunately the rest of the album holds up extremely well. Just great songwriting and an effortless vibe.

Very nostalgic for me as my mum has all their cds and used to play them in the car a lot. While it isn’t their best album I’m glad they have one on the list. Great songwriting, does maybe run out of steam a bit at the end though.

I’ve never heard of them. Kinda enjoyed though

New to me and I really like this album!

Used to have this CD in my car - a random charity shop purchase that turned out to be not too bad.

I had only really heard of ‘Weather with You’ before. I wasn't sure if the other songs would be on the same level. I'm relieved that they were just as good. Particularly liked ‘ chocolate cake’ and ‘four seasons in one day’. The length of it was just about right, and I also think the album cover is pretty cool. All in all, a very solid effort.

Generous but I liked it

Really obsessed with this song Chocolate Cake... the rest of it is just ok, but pretty good. I did not know that Crowded House did Don't Dream It's Over! That's a great song, too. Very good.

good stuff, but feels a lil dated for something made in 1991 lol

yeah, i always knew them as the guys behind "Don't Dream It's Over". no, i didn't expect them to be a big cultural institution in Australia with a fanbase and everything. i mean, i probably should have -- any foreign band with just one song you hear on American radio has a 50/50 shot of being exactly that. it's especially odd how none of their later songs caught on in the US once they went a bit more indie, cause some of these sound like they should be college radio regulars. i still get the feeling that they're a bit deeper than your Deep Blue Something or your School of Fish. i can imagine this being a comfort listen in the future, or something to put on in the car. a surprisingly pleasant find compared to what i was dreading i'd find (really boring soft rock). good job, Oz.

Oddly, I actually like this. It started out as very 90s punk/almost jam-bandy at times which I don't always have taste for. But this is different in some way that I can't quite put my finger on. It's like a meld of R.E.M. and Soundgarden. Despite some negative reviews, I like this one.

on this list its a 4 but otherwise a 2

I was a fan of Split Enz back in the day, and was pleased when Crowded House formed, but didn't pay a lot of attention to them at the time. This was a new album for me, something I hadn't heard at all, and I found myself enjoying it quite a bit. It's pop, but it's not meaningless, there's some craft to it for sure, which is the dividing line between art and noise.

Favorite track: Fall At Your Feet

Brilliant album. Had on cassette in the 90s.

C.H. is a band I've slept on for some time... and probably will continue to sleep on after today, lol, but that's just my own personal taste. This is an excellent album - plenty of beautiful melodies, and the REM vibes are unmistakable. Just not something I'd typically go out of my way to listen to.

Favorite songs: Four Seasons In One Day, Tall Trees, There Goes God, Weather With You, Fame Is, It's Only Natural, Chocolate Cake Least favorite songs: All I Ask 4/5

I liked it, I have never heard of them, but they reminded me of the Byrds. Pretty good.

You know, sometimes it doesn't get much better than this, after writing a fairly ambivalent review of my previous 2 star album from yesterday, I was greeted with a goddamn delightful Crowded House album... Another band who I had only really heard in Greatest Hits form (the brilliant Recurring Dream album) of which 4 songs came from here, so getting into the Neil & Tim Finn deep cuts is a great way to start a day.

We enjoyed this one. Recognised a few of the songs, but our first time listening to the album as a whole: we will be listening again.

Bright and lovely piece of work. Never going to move from safe but nevertheless comforting.

Maybe a little too Americana for me, but I didn’t mind it. More light rock Americana

Australian Travis energy. Had a fun time with this one.

A winner for sure, a gem uncovered in this process. Not quite where Screaming Tress got me, but it’s good.

good songs on this, weather with you is a banger

Whenever I come across a song I recognise by artists I don't I'm surprised how I could live without the knowledge. I cannot imagine where I've heard 'Fall at Your Feet' before, but I could sing along to it no problem. I recognised 'Weather with You' too, also not sure from where, but that's less of a surprise with it being the single. The album is quite fun, and very late 80s early 90s rock. I think I have a soft spot from the TV left on as I would fall asleep to shows at 2100 in my parents' room.
