Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Had to give Woodface a second run thru because on first listen I had myself second guessing my harsh feelings about it. I really liked when they leaned into the jangle like on Tall Trees. They’re also really good at harmonic folk like on Weather with You, which had me thinking of a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young track. I couldn’t help but feel there was something lacking here and believe the album could have benefited from a touch more passion and punch to their sound to bring more life to the often flat sound. Chocolate Cake really put this album firmly behind the 8 ball for me personally as I hated that song so much so though they did kinda win me over, it was an uphill battle after that awful song. 3 stars
good enough Would buy though
3,5
Generic pop rock. Meh.
Decent enough pop rock, easy to listen to and not at all challenging. A few solid radio hits, but a lot of skippable or forgettable tracks. Has a unique charm that made it fun, but nothing overly groundbreaking. The second half of the album is also noticeably weaker than the first half. Top tracks: Fall At Your Feet, Whispers And Moans, Four Seasons In One Day
Am I stupid for thinking Crowded House were one-hit wonders? Like all I knew from them was Don’t Dream It’s Over. I didn’t even know they did anything in the nineties. Is it just me? Anyway, this album’s kinda catchy. Nothing here is too bad. But nothing really sticks either. It just feels like a standard 90’s rock album with a little charm. Some nice rock songs and some nice ballads, but nothing that blew me away. I can’t even say I really enjoyed the hit singles here. Everything just felt…mid. I did enjoy There Goes God though. The lyrics were funny enough to be interesting. Favorite track: There Goes God Other hits: Chocolate Cake, Weather With You, It’s Only Natural, Fall At Your Feet, Four Seasons And A Day, Fame Is
It's a bit strange to see this on here. I have fond memories of the singles, Weather With You, At Your Feet and It's Only Natural, as they were played a lot when I was a kid. The album, and frankly the band in general, is just middle of the road AOR without any real excitement or innovation. It's fine, but a long way away from a must listen.
Chill album, allt låter väldigt "clean and polished" skulle kräva lite mera edge. Nice melodier
Hello, we're Crowded House, allow us to play 12 songs that precisely sum up three star music. Prepare yourselves to feel almost nothing, but have a reasonable time while you do so. Don't forget to sing along to our hit.
didn't know much of these guys outside of their big hit 'don't dream it's over' and so i was pretty optimistic. this album is not really that at all. it's not... bad. it's pretty nothing, to be honest. a lot of it reminds me of the band squeeze, but this album is not as fun or interesting as stuff that squeeze put out. quite frankly, it's kind of boring. it's so MOR, i don't think you could get more middle on that road. it's here, we've achieved pure mid. a lot of this sounds like a dentist's waiting room. the most boring guy you know listens to this to get in touch with his "sensitive side." bleh
The fact that this album does not contain the mega-monster-super-smash-hit song, "Don't Dream it's Over" leads me to believe that Crowded House will appear again on this list. So, I'm just gonna kick the can down the road and save an actual review until then. [Notes to Self: 1."Four Seasons in One Day" sounds like a late-70's Paul McCartney/Wings album cut. 2. I seriously thought "Fame Is" was a Squeeze song mistakenly slipped onto this album. 3. Everything else sounds like that band that did "Don't Dream It's Over".]
I liked the first half of the album better than the second half. But I really liked the first song.
Weird lyrics but cool
Pleasant middle aged fodder. Some risqué lyrics that proved an education for Hamish
Nothing Special?
Solid fine
Another weird choice for a band who has a much more classic album, or at lease one that has their signature songs. This sounds like one of those later Squeeze albums - perfectly alright, they are pros, but you barely remember while you are listening to it, much less after.
Unfamiliar with this one.
Couple good hits and a decent 90s folk album
Good music but kind of bland. Good for it to be sprinkled into a playlist.
some really beautiful songs with at times very corny writing. good headphones/speakers really come through on this record, very crisp production 7/10
Truly nothing to write home about. A few sounded good, but I could have not listened and been fine.
After a long hiatus back to these albums. This was the last recommendation a year or more ago when I stopped looking at this site. And it was a pretty nice welcome. I liked what they were putting down. But at the same time it wasn't mind blowing or reality altering. Just a solid listen. Only 1 save for later with "Fall at Your Feet". And I don't even love ballads vmbut this one is good. Thanks 1001 for the rec, glad to be back. 3/5 ☆s
just another 90s pop album interesting songwriting aside it feels kind of bland.
The epitome of average 90s rock. Landing on 2.5 stars, but begrudgingly will give this a 3.
To me, this album was fine, and the epitome of a three star album. Pleasant enough to listen to, but nothing particularly memorable either.
I'm inclined to say the reviews for this album verge on harsh. Are Crowded House reinventing the wheel, burning down record stores and inventing new instruments? No. However, this album is fine - it's easy to listen to, doesn't try too hard but has it's quirks and interesting moments. Safely a three.
Yeah, I can rock with this I guess! 3.5 stars.
6/10
Chocolataaaaateee caaaaaakkke! Lol. Album was fine.
Perfectly pleasant but before I die?. nah
3.5
Fall at your Feet and Weather With You both unlocked some memories. Overall a safe, pleasant album. Doesn't stand out in a significant way but wasn't bad or unenjoyable either. Very much a 3. The comment about Gilmour Girls soundtrack fodder was apt, as someone who's never actually seen that show.
Dull in the whole
Never got to this yesterday. I'll check it out today. i don't even know what kind of music this will be. Meh, it was alright. 3 stars.
has the elements but lacks something required for it to be good
Listened to this one yesterday while installing some lights. This sounds super familiar, but I don't think I've ever heard any songs before. Took me a while, but I think the vocals just sound like a slurry of popular 90s rock bands (Cake, Better Than Ezra, and Toad the Wet Sprocket). Ultimately, I feel like this was fine, but not something I really care to go back through for repeated listens. Soft soft 3 for me.
A pleasant listen! High 3.
A band with 13.1 million Spotify listens a year that I have never heard of so looking forward to this. Turns out it was just pretty sold alternative almost surf rock at points. I can see why this band is as popular as there are. Nothing to hate here. Pretty high 3
I have not heard about Crowded House, but this was pretty good. I found a few good tracks that I might return to.
Couple of good songs on this, recognized a few of them. Very classic rock.
➕chocolate cake, italian plastic ➖there goes god, how will you go/i’m still here kind of generically good. something i could hear in like. your moms friends sandwich shop. tomato soup and a grilled cheese
Pros: (1) kind of sounds like Squeeze (apparently Squeeze didn’t make the book! Dimery, you slimey limey, how many times are you going to fuck up?!); (2) has some decent songs on it. Cons: (1) boring and (2) goes on way too long. All things considered, eh. https://giphy.com/gifs/latenightseth-seth-meyers-lnsm-8Fc0E0rNGI1xSSqBTZ
They have one amazing song, and it’s not on this record. This is so dated it hurts. It’s not terrible. It’s okay. It’s just cheesy. Formulaic.
okay sound for that era, didn't blow me away.
Favorite Track: Four Seasons In One Day
A few songs I recognized and enjoyed, but kinda meh otherwise
Not bad, not quite my taste.
Me aburrió un fla 2,5
All in all, pleasant but nothing wonderful. Just good enough for a listen.
yea ok. Crowded House just kind of phoning in the type of stuff you'll hear while shopping at Whole Foods.
3/5. This album has some highlights and unfortunately, some lowlights as well. It feels like a natural progression of where psychedelic music would go and it does the genre well but not sure it's my favorite. The first half is much better than the second half, so it does drag on for a little longer than it should. I might feel like the songs are better on second listen but it felt very surface level. Either way they were catchy and very 90's. It was a good listen but not a great listen. Best Song: Chocolate Cake, Weather With You, How Will You Go
An interesting and good album. The first half holds up a weaker second half, but the vibes are on point throughout. It's an album that I'm not really sure how it got to be on this list, but I did really enjoy listening to it, much more than some other albums that have come up on the list. The album itself never really gets quite to being great, but it is very good. Favorite Song(s): Chocolate Cake, Whispers and Moans
Overall: 6/10 This album started out really strong to the point that I got Beatles vibes from it, but I got pretty bored by the end. There's much better rock from the 90's that was missed in place of this. I still enjoyed it for the most part. Fav Song: It's Only Natural Least Fav Song: All I Ask
Neil Finn: great voice. Theorem: all rock singers ultimately want to be Mel Tormé or Frank Sinatra. Neil Finn can almost prove this, most noticeably on the ballads. Great drumming by Paul Hester, tragically died of suicide at age 46 in 2005. Great production, great songwriting, impeccable execution. All of this does not make for a perfect album though. It’s too precise, too chill, too easy. It’s not annoying, it just has zero edge musically or otherwise. So it comes down to a matter of taste. Crowded House do a PERFECT job of not doing anything new or even all that interesting. Which sucks because I really liked listening to it. Also very much like the band. Loved Split Enz. I wanted to like this more. “Not bad != great” is another possible theorem.
It was fine, nothing really stood out for me.
Hadn’t heard of this band. Quite pleasant, though nothing about this album really lingered in my mind afterwards.
It’s Only Natural to want some Chocolate Cake after you listen to this. All I Ask is that you don’t eat too much otherwise you may get a Woodface.
Decent album. Very alternative of the late 80s/early 90s variety. Kind of like REM doing a Steely Dan impersonation.
There goes God In his sexy pants And his sausage dog Ugh
Neil Finn is the antichrist. 3
Better than I was expecting, but I only recognized one song on this album, "Weather with You."
3/5 Just fine – couple of classics, but I'm otherwise unmoved.
It's fine. It reminds me of something on some of the tracks, but I can't quite place what it is. Maybe it's just 90's rock in general. Standouts It's Only Natural Tall Trees 3/5
Melancolic but happy Oz sound.
It's ok
Wasn't bad. I'd give it another go.
I thought this was fine; nothing crazy though there is some subpar singing going on here and is super evident in "All I Ask". Actually had to skip to the next song because of the poor display. 5/10.
Production and music (saxophone, keyboards) make this sound more like a mid 80s album. Some nice vocal harmonies. It's pleasant but nothing really notable or exciting. Highlights: "It's Only Natural" (slightly funky pop), "Weather With You" ("Eastern" sounding riff that reoccurs throughout the song, harmonized vocals), "She Goes On" (folk pop) Notable: "All I Ask" (old school torch song with lush strings that seems out of place on this album)
This was okay. I quite liked the beginning of the album, but it sort of fell apart as things went on. Most of the tracks also sounded the same, and there wasn’t a whole lot of variety. This is one of the albums on the list that even though I got some personal enjoyment out of, I in no way think it should be on the list. This is definitely not something you need to hear before you die.
Hearing this album for the first time in nearly 30 years unlocks a lot of memories. What can easily be confused as generic boring 90s pop dismisses the fact that this sort of indie album broke so much ground at the time of its release. Does it stick and stay relevant in 2024? No, it's a pop album at its heart but still a very much listenable one at that. 3.5/5
This was fine but I would not listen to this again. Nothing was really bad about it, but I couldn't get into it IDK.
Brilliant songwriters and album
Pleasantly surprised by tracks between the hits. Interesting songwriting, good production. I don't know if it's actually middle of the road or just feels that way because of the band's reputation? Not sure I'd come back to it in a hurry, so it's a 3.
this is the most overwhelmingly normal album for a list of the 1001 (1089) most important albums to listen to before you die. like, they didnt do anything wrong, they didnt ask to be here in the special-special list, man, theyre just making music (my name's woodface and i care what you think)
Not bad, but didn’t really grab me.
Pretty good.
This is pretty good, I like it a lot. It sounds a lot like Crosby Stills Nash & Young but with a more 90s vibe infused in
Pretty good
This album was great. Listened to it in a hotel with a soccer game in the background. Shit rocked.
I liked it. The sound was unique/strange. Also there’s the fun hidden track at the end. Maybe someone can better quantify this genre of music, but it kinda reminds me of the black keys. 3 stars!
Pleasant for background music with a couple standout songs. I can see the appeal and I do love the 90s pop rock sound, but I don’t think it’s anything groundbreaking or massively influential, just good music. It’s a standard, middle of the road three for me.
I'd say that this was mostly a nostalgia trip for me. An album that was played a lot by those around me because it was one of the few tapes we had in the 6th form art room.
The Good: the artwork on the album cover The Bad: that I had to refer to the cover of the album as something good The Ugly: a catalogue of music which has been abused in series/movies To be fair, the production is solid, the album contains 5 hits which puts it on a different level than many other, mediocre, productions. But the hits are too bland, and when this album came out I was not excited... and neither am I now. 3* because of the 5 hits.
6.5/10
Mediocre Squeeze. Sqooze?
Crowded House is fine for adult contempo. It’s not *completely* bland.
Generally good and some slower soulful songs but I know there are better albums from them
Who? Bit of a yawn
solid vibes but not enough to stand out
Besides the hit on this album, this was my first conscious exposure to Crowded House. I enjoyed this, actually, and this really tastes a LOT like Wilco. Or the other way round, given these guys were first. I have half a mind of checking out some more of their stuff.
Already knew Don’t Dream It’s Over and a couple of their radio hits, but I had never heard this album. The bass lines are complex and interesting, and the songwriting is catchy. Favorites: chocolate cake, it’s only natural, fall at your feet, weather with you, four seasons in one day, and there goes god. When I started this project, I wanted to discover good music that I had not given a chance. I will most likely listen to more Crowded House (and Split Enz). 3⭐️ (really somewhere between 3 and 4).
Like if the Jayhawks made alt-pop instead of alt-country. Not great, not terrible.
Australian REM. Perfectly adequate.
Some nice music. Soft and enjoyable
Elliott Smith but not as enjoyable Would listen again though
A decent example of that indie means adult contemporary style that had its moment in the early to mid 90s. Hootie and Blowfish fans take note. It's an alright album but I confess that I tuned out on a lot on this one, even during repeated listens (to be fair, I picked a day when I was quite tired to try this one out). 'Weather With You' is a good song and it does some heavy lifting of the others. But it's an alright album.
The whole time I was listening to this album it reminded me of a band that sounded better but I just couldn't place it. I've never heard anything off this album previously, but it all sounded very familiar. Basically early 90s alternative rock, but not the heavy grunge rock, the acoustic folk driven almost new wave type. Sort of like REM, but not as good. It sounded like everything else at the time, and I'm not sure what came first. It was ok
OK album. This is very 90s-era alternative rock from an 80s pop artist and it's not terrible, but I just didn't respond to it on any emotional level. ***
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Perfectly Pleasant Pop Rock
It’s a nice poppy album. The singing is good, the riffs are nice and poppy. Chord changes are nice. After two listens, I like, not love it. Chocolate Cake and a couple of the other singles are worth listening again, but as an overall album, this is a 3/5.
Kinda weird 90s indie. I liked most of the album but some was funk in a odd way. "God in his swxy pants and sausage dog."
Alright
Some interesting tracks, barely a 3 overall, however.
Better than expected
I didn’t really like the vocals but I’d guess that’s just an accent thing.
The amount of times I was forced to sing Weather With You as a child...
The songs sound familiar.
I liked this pretty well, but nothing really stood out as exceptional
I've got time for the Finn brothers - I know they're respected and liked by musicians I admire, and I've seen them play in later years in a couple contexts. But good will aside, and despite a couple great tracks, this is some middling 90s fare.
Fine collection of Beatles influenced '90s indie rock - some tunes made me think of Guster
I did not know Crowded House, shockingly, before listening to this. I also now feel OK that I did not. This album is good. Songs are good. well crafted, well produced, well written. I just don't feel particularly grabbed by anything. It is light, pleasurable even. But it is not memorable.
По названию и обложке я начал трястись и думать что это какой-нибудь жесткачграйндкор. Но деревянное лицо прячет за собой довольно нежный и лёгкий рок. В принципе слушабельно. Мне не то что бы заходит, но было нормас.
ganz ok das ganze
A pretty safe, enjoyable pop rock album that feels very 90s, I remember a few of these hits. Found this hard to rate as it was nice enough and has some great moments but also never really held my attention in a serious way. I won't begrudge it coming up again but I can't see myself seeking it out in future.
Never heard of this band or any of their songs. This album really grew on me and it almost felt like two different bands from the beginning of the album to the end. I really liked Weather with you, Italian Plastic and There Goes God. Harmonicas draw me in and I just can't help but like them.
After reading the lyrics to the song, I think Chocolate Cake is supposed to represent greedy excesses of commercialism. And I guess maybe Andy Warhol could be laughing in his grave. With youtubes and toktiks it seems like anyone can have their 15 minutes. This album was ok. Not great. Not bad. I liked Fall at Your Feet.
This was pretty good. I was not previously familiar with the album, but had heard of the artist. I enjoyed the sound and variety, but none of the songs themselves really stood out to me at first listen. I did like the album enough to listen again so maybe I can form a better opinion then.
I didn't really like most of this album execpt chocolate cake so I am feeling conflicted. Those are my only two thoughts there is nothing more complex then that: chocolate cake good, the rest not really good. So idk
Chill early 90's alt rock vibe. Not my cup of tea, but interesting. A couple good tracks.
Nice album, some boring songs, some hits.
Feels like a pretty standard 90s rocky poppy album. It was enjoyable, but not amazing. It's just easy listening.
Everywhere you goooo oo oooo Yep, just as expected, an hour ISH of middle of the road nothing music
Good old American 90s pop rock. Inoffensive middle of the road, couple of big hits. All in probably deserves to be on the list.
It was ok. Always take the weather is the obvious highlight
Bekannt: Weather with you
Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did.
Just fine. It was basic and generic but very easy to listen to
Schöner Gitarrenrock. Kann man gut nebenbei hören. Ein Hit ist sogar dabei
Woodface by Crowded House is an album that shines with lovely harmonies and a distinctly summery feel. The vocals are rich and well-blended, creating an inviting and warm listening experience. Songs like Weather with You and Four Seasons in One Day stand out with their catchy melodies and intricate arrangements. However, after a few tracks, the album starts to feel a bit samey, with a lack of variation in tempo and style. While the harmonies and instrumentation are consistently strong, I found the songs blending together. Despite this, the lyrical content remains thoughtful and engaging, often reflecting on personal themes and relationships. The production quality is excellent, highlighting the band's musicianship and Neil Finn's songwriting skills. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 4 STAND OUT TRACK - Fall at Your Feet
There are some really nice ones on here with some very enjoyable harmonies in particular
Nice album not as good as their first which I hope shows up on here.
Was not impressed by this album and didn’t think there was anything special about it.
Overall a pleasant almost dream-like listen, but definitely some bits to just sleep through in there. Best songs are It’s Only Natural and Weather With You. The songwriting is strong, catchy power pop and ballads, somewhat Beatles-esque, or Squeeze-like. Don’t think Crowded House gets the notice they deserve in the US, I always thought they were a one-hit wonder, but they were really a solid band and Neil Finn was a great songwriter and this is probably their best album.
I initially wrote a review calling this department store music. Giving a few tracks a relisten (and the great Don't Dream It's Over too), that assessment was unfair. The songwriting here is definitely above average, especially the vocal melodies and lyrics. The second half especially contains the albums more adventurous and impressive side. Chocolate Cake soured me significantly and it took until the brilliant Fame Is for me to realize that I just disliked Chocolate Cake, not the rest of the album. How Will You Go is a particularly beautiful track.
Opzich prima, maar behalve Wester with you niet heel speciaal
Decent but often middle of the road - shades of Travis and other late 90’s/2000s almost easy listening mellowcore rock spliced with some introspective if overwrought lyrics about God. Better when more experimental with chord changes and instrumentation. #WhispersAndMoans
Muy bueno.
Not bad
Decent but I'll definitely forget about its existence after a while.
Some good stuff here, 3.5 stars
This was okay, I listened to it a couple days ago and I don't remember anything sticking out really
Very meh
It's music? Nothing really stuck out to be. It's fine. Nothing bad but nothing special. A common response I have but really nothing made an impact on me. It's competently made but that's all I can say.
Really enjoyed the first few songs, then it lost my attention. Good discovery nonetheless
Nothing special.
Woodface ‘There goes God in his sexy pants and his sausage dog’ I’ve always slightly dismissed Crowded House as a bit 90s salesman in a Mondeo driving up and down the M1 tapping his fingers on the wheel to their latest album. However I have read a lot about them as pop classicists heavily influenced by the Beatles, and I do like the craftsmanship and tune of Weather with You, so I was quite looking forward to giving this a go and hoping for a nice jangly, pop-rock album of nice tunes and playing. First thing that stood out was that this sounded very 90s, very dated production wise. Lots of space, but without sounding very big. I think it sounds a bit cold, there’s not much warmth or intimacy to my ears. It’s got a very 90s adult rock bass sound, a bit 5 sting session player that I really dislike. I really didn’t like Chocolate Cake, the opening chords annoyed me for some reason although I thought the lyric was very good, very dry. It’s Only Natural, I like the riff and the verses, the chorus grates on me a bit - feels like a Sunday car journey with your parents. Fall at Your Feet is not bad either, but does have some of the same Sunday energy as It’s Only Natural. Weather with You - great song, it really does stand out, particularly after the slightly dull Tall Trees. Nice harmonies, great chorus and I like the riff. Whispers and Moans, I really don’t like the wah wah or the horns. Four Seasons in One Day is a nice song, I do like it but it does suffer from the sound of the album. There Goes God, Fame Is (the heavier rocking sound is pretty unconvincing) all the way to How Will You Go are pretty unremarkable, making the 2nd half of the album a bit nothingy. I do love the harmonies and the brothers’ vocal blend, they sound so good together in a way that only siblings do, a bit like the Everly Brothers. Despite that that though I’m not keen on the lead vocal sound. When they use slightly different instrumentation (eg strings on All I Ask or accordion on As Sure as I am) it tends to feel slightly hollow, maybe it’s the production but it sounds a bit half hearted and at arms length, not adding any layers or texture. It’s not quite as good as I was hoping, although there are some good tunes on it, a lot of it passed me by. By looking to be tasteful and pop classical it ends up being a bit too inoffensive and hotel lobby. I keep going on about it but I don’t think the sound and production help, and I did find a lot of it pretty bland and forgettable, particularly the 2nd half. The only saving graces are the vocal harmonies, they are uniformly excellent, and some of the lyrics, which are very wry and sardonic. 2 feels too low as it’s not terrible, so a solid middle of the road 3, mainly for the 2 or 3 good songs, the harmonies and some of the lyrics. ⭐⭐⭐️
This one is pure 90s nostalgia for me – from the distinctive album cover, to some of the more poignant lyrics I remember noting down wistfully in my university notebook. I probably haven't listened to this since 1995 though, and it has dated, or I've changed (more likely), but really good to hear it again. Gentle and whimsical. Favourite track: As Sure As I Am, and the sublime harmonies on She Goes On
Nice! They sound like Squeeze. Their personality starts to show several songs in
Reminiscent of both Steely Dan and Squeeze, this is good solid Power Pop of the sort that I enjoy, to an extent. I think it’s problem is that unlike Steely Dan and Squeeze, who are both observational and tragic, Woodface is just observational. There should be more pathos in the storytelling, because it’s there in the music. As it is, it’s enjoyable, but never quite elevates itself to more than that
Crowded House's "Woodface" is a delightful blend of catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and impeccable musicianship. Released in 1991, the album features a mix of upbeat pop-rock anthems and introspective ballads, showcasing the band's versatility and songwriting prowess. Tracks like "Weather with You" and "It's Only Natural" are infectious and instantly memorable, while songs like "Fall at Your Feet" and "Four Seasons in One Day" demonstrate the band's ability to craft poignant, emotionally resonant ballads. While "Woodface" may not have received the same level of commercial success as some of Crowded House's other albums, it remains a fan favorite and a testament to the band's enduring appeal. With its timeless melodies and heartfelt lyrics, "Woodface" is a must-listen for fans of classic pop-rock.
Solid. Couple songs that are 4s, but I didn't get the sense that this is a 5-star album over all, to my tastes.
That is a wooden face.
ok
Fine
i wasn't really expecting such a range from crowded house. the opening track, "chocolate cake," has a blues-y, smooth feel to it. multiple songs contained new wave vibes. "all i ask" incorporates jazz into such a beautiful number. woodface has lots of rock and pop but branches further than that. the lyrics, too, felt creative and different. i suspect this album was ahead of its time, because it sounded so much like alternative from the early aughts. 3.5
I had literally never heard anything by Crowded House aside from "Don't Dream It's Over", which is far and away their greatest hit (not featured on this album). In any case, these guys surprised by showing a lot of versatility and talent on Woodface! Aspects of this album include alternative rock, blues rock, and even a bit of singer-songwriter type crooning. This album was not anything groundbreaking in my opinion, but it was diverse and enjoyable. And really, a song about chocolate cake is in and of itself a winner to me.
Good but didn't grab me
Crowded House was ok in the day, and they haven't changed much since then.
Interesting. Their hot songs wasn’t even on this album.
Pretty nice good album
Good album, they have better albums in my opinion
ALL HIT RADIO! Hit after hit after hit! Weather With You actually bends the sound. Overblown hype alert: this sounds almost Shakespearian; the play on words, the story telling, the subtleties in the change of mood. Very classy
Just sounds like all filler
2.5
Appreciate the songwriting craft but found it hard to get too excited about this. The singles will probably be listened to forever but they've definitely been overplayed so hard to be objective
v sparkly, but a lot of it also v slow & kind of beatlesy which i struggle with (i rly do not like the beatles, this is a beach boys household!!) favs: chocolate cake fall at your feet weather with you
Prima achtergrondmuziek
Leuke dingetjes maar was het met niet
Lyrically and instrumentally fantastic, but I spent the entire album wishing a more soulful singer was performing, which wouldn't be damning if it wasn't a thought 8 couldn't shake at all.
Some nice songs, some forgettable ones.
You know, I'm kind of surprised that I haven't gotten very many albums from Australia or New Zealand so far. I believe Melodrama by Lorde is the only one I've gotten until now. Anyways, Woodface by Crowded House is a pretty good album. I did like Melodrama more, but like most of my album comparisons, this is completely meaningless. This album is enjoyable though. The sound is just nice. I like the singing. The harmonies work well. The writing isn't the best, but it does the job. I wasn't sure if this deserved to be on the list, but seeing as how these guys seemed to have had a much bigger impact in their home turf than in America, as well as the quality of this album, I'd say this is a decently deserving album of being on this list. High 3/5.
Okay album, some standout moments but overall quite bland. 6/10
Kind of liked this one. Some of the songs weren’t great, but overall liked the style and the music. 3/5 Might listen again
not bad not moving
All nice breezy pop going by in the background. Nothing bad to say about it - and the album art is eye catching - but I didn't walk away with a song in my heart.
A great balance of genres between alt-90's and some classic Australian grunge sounds with a hint of pop
I loved this album in the beginning but by the end it felt a bit subdued and redundant.
Najbolje pjesme: 1. Weather With You
Never heard of these guys before. Very 90's sound. I enjoyed quite a few songs, but a lot of it seemed very dated. Probably would have liked it a lot more when I was in high school, but since I did not hear it then there is no nostalgia factor to pull it up a star.
I mentioned in a previous review that I am not traditionally confused by music. Whether it be the genre, or just the execution and production style, I can almost always settle into something unless I just genuinely don’t like the music. But for this particular album, I am confused by myself. I am, to put it plain and simple, perplexed. Because there is one part of me that is disappointed in the lack of inspiration present in this. So many of these songs seem derivative of much I’ve heard before, and they feel lifeless in their execution. Imagine a less enthusiastic and less technically proficient version of The Police. But there is another part of me that enjoys what my ears are hearing. I feel like I was mislead by the opening song, because that is easily the most exciting thing going on here, and I hoped the rest of the album would follow that same energy, but it let me down slightly. All I Ask was definitely unexpected, but I appreciated the variety. The last thing I thought I would hear was a bossanova-esque song. Really the last couple of songs are where the album tries the most new ideas. And even though they show more emotion in the last minute of the closing track than on anything else, those songs still fall kind of flat. This is one of the most middle of the road records I’ve had to listen to so far, and I don’t love it. But I don’t hate it either. Rating: 6/10
Never heard any of these songs. After when I used to hear this band. Some were good but a little long.
Listened Before? N This one was pretty good. I'm famailiar with their work from their couple of mainstream hits, of course, but I wasn't aware of their storied history in Australia and NZ. It has a different feel from American rock music of the time and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I could listen to this again and may. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Weather With You
Wanted to dislike this and tbh I found them a bit bland but there is a grudging respect deserved to them. The songs are good....it just needs a bit of fizz.
pretty average but neil finn has a lovely voice
Alright
I know Crowded House was huge in Australia and New Zealand, but here in the US they're one hit wonders known for "Don't Dream It's Over." Despite an obsession with music from Oceania, I've never explored this band and only know a couple other Neil Finn songs from "The Hobbit" soundtrack and other artists' covers of his work. This is very typical of early 90s pop rock with Beatles-esque harmonies, lots of jangly guitars, and that vaguely Southern Americana sound that was popular with artists like Tom Petty, Sister Hazel, Jude Cole, etc. I'm not complaining, because I like all that stuff. Lyrically, there are a lot of love songs that wouldn't be out of place on a Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams, or Richard Marx album. Some of the synths and effects sound a bit dated. "Chocolate Cake" is a song critical of American excess and materialism/pop art that's a little cheesy in its preachiness. "All I Ask" is an odd foray into something that's part lounge song part Bond theme that doesn't work all that well. On the other hand, the bluesy guitar work of "Tall Trees" is cool, as are the Finn brothers' harmonies throughout the album. The hand drums on "She Goes On" give an interesting twist to what is otherwise a pretty standard mid-tempo pop song (it also reminds me of "Everything I Own" by Bread). Overall, the album isn't bad. It's got a lot of good melodies and guitar work. But it's also very of its time, and I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to listen to this brand of radio friendly soft rock again outside of a few of the singles. 3/5
sounds like the 90s
Weather With You is recognizable for me, but not any others on this one. I enjoyed it though.
Less strange than I was expecting off of the cursed account art, but not bad at all, especially after all the albums I've been getting.
So 90's. Some catchy beach jams here. Solid album. Would give it a 3.5 if I could.
Kind of lackluster
This was an interesting album. It is very grounded in 60s music, especially the Beatles and the Beach Boys (mostly on the second half). There are also elements of college rock and experimental rock. Mostly, its fairly conventional rock music. I wouldn't say that it's groundbreaking or anything but it was enjoyable enough if not a bit long.
For some reason, I thought the lead singer from this band was the guy from James. I also thought that James was a soloist. You learn a lot from this site.
I prefer their first two albums. This one is more poppy and cheerful.
I love „Weather with you“ but the rest of the album was not as good as I hoped for. Some songs had a very hogh quality but most were average pop songs.
A bit too Morrissey-adjacent to be something I can get very excited about
Yes. Very enjoyable. Not sure why this has the X factor but it does.
Cookie cutter cliche of Brit pop rock. The delivery is mundane and can only partially be made up for with decent production. Wholly unforgettable.
Decent singles
A couple fun songs but did not hit the mark for me. 6.5/10
Okay

Wel leuk. Beetje saai
My Neil Finn moment : It was early 1984. I was sitting in a Greyhound in Melbourne, waiting to begin the horrendous trip back to Sydney with my very pregnant partner (we couldn’t afford the plane fares). Who should stumble onto the bus with a lot of luggage but Neil Finn. He was helping some departing friends/relatives with their gear. Lots of hugs & farewells. And I just thought : this dude seems like a really genuine, lovely guy. That was the year Split Enz broke up & within a year Crowded House had formed. I’d never heard Woodface before now. But I’m totally familiar with 4 of the 5 singles released from the album. And with Tim Finn joining the band for this album, an Anzac balance was created in the membership. I know I’m not supposed to, but I love Kiwis. And these brothers have distinguished themselves over the last 50 years. Weather With You is one of the great songs in the Australasian songbook. It reminds me of all those share-houses I spent my twenties in. It’s Only Natural, Fall At Your Feet & Four Seasons In One Day are all winners. Great listen.
Easy listening, nice harmonies, good 90s album
Well, there is an important message here on this album. And you already know it. Something about the weather or idk
Honestly it’s the kind of music you forget to listen to. You forget you even have it on.
Goofy, and not my thing.
First one was good a bit too easy listening pop in the middle but it had harmonica that's good 'Yeah I thought it was good' - Maddy Saul 31.12.23
This is good. A little generic at times, but I enjoyed it much more than I expected. Solid album.
Decent pop. But only decent.
I've never heard of these guys. I'm assuming it's because they're Australian but I figured there's more to the story than that. Turns out this was a huge hit in Australia and New Zealand, even becoming a breakout hit in the UK. Unfortunately it failed to enter the mainstream consciousness here in the US and Canada, so Woodface or Crowded House never appeared on my radar until now. It's fairly good pop rock but nothing that really stuck with me.
Bizarre mais pas mauvais. Il y un petit quelque chose 3.25
3.5
*deferring my right to comment on this one so our native Kiwi can have a moment of Oceania pride*
Solid
Mostly boring 90s rock/pop. I remember seeing this album in my mums collection and being a bit freaked out by the cover. I liked tall trees, it was a bit like the cure/rem. another track had nice orchestral instrumentation. Overall it was a bit boring
2.8/5 - Opening with a song about Chocolate cake is brilliant. You have my undivided attention from there. Which got quickly divided on the next song. I could not hold any thought to the rest of this album. Nothing was terrible per se, just underwhelming in all regards. Nothing quite pops out at you as being spectacular or well done. There are flashes throughout the album that almost got my attention back, but they quickly dashed away with another slow tempo change or echoey vocals. I can see how there may be talent in this band sure, they just forgot to use it on this album.
Decent album. I think the first half is worse than the second half. Crowded house does it best when they slow it down and you can hear some of their influence in bands of the 90s (Hootie, Pearl Jam). 3/5
This feels like a milk toast REM cover band got together and tried to write some original songs. There’s nothing that stands out as ear catching, which makes the record more of a chore to sit through as opposed to an experience.
Gets worse as it goes on but definitely better than some of the crap I've given two stars. Everywhere you go.
Apart from a couple standout singles this is a rather bland record.
It's got bops
Had me in the first half, not gonna lie
Many of these songs were on the “Best Of” album I had, including me favorite Crowded House song, “Weather With You.” In the end-good, solid, and also not mind blowing.
Just fine. Probably huge on college radio back in its days, but just OK.
Pabbarokk
Not bad
It's alright. I liked "Weather With You" but the rest of the album is pretty lacklustre. It sounds like an REM record all the way, except the songs aren't that catchy or original. It's a decent album.
Solid early 90s alt rock album, softer (no grunge elements), was happy listening the whole way through. Some songs that seemed to stick out (first-listen fav being “Fall at your Feet”). Would listen to again.
This is pretty typical 90s pop rock. I can tell this inspired some later 2000s indie rock tho. Some of the tracks oddly reminded me of Phish? Especially the first track. Other than that, they have a pretty 60s-70s inspired sound. Kinda Beatle-esque. Not bad overall.
3. kinda boring, but nice to have on in the background.
Woodface base camp is a piece of time-traveling indie, that kind of future twining with new wave to establish a great foundation. Crowded House visit many other styles, slowing down a bit as they go. A very strong first-impression album, of a group with moderate output, no true standout projects for the uninitiated perhaps.
Very safe, not much to grab your attention or hear anything new different.
Pleasant listen. Bit confused that it made the list as theres nothing about it that really stands out. The singles are good, the album tracks are good, but there's not really much to it. Light 3/5
It was nice to listen to.
I tried twice, is a no for me dawg
Totally pleasant pop rock. Knew the singles from repeated radio play, the album tracks weren't a revelation.
Average, not outstanding in any direction
Didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did. I remember a few of their hits from HS, but never listened to a whole album of theirs. Reasonably good stuff. Might even listen again.
This was an average album to me. Felt Like a mix of Steve Winwood and REM. Overall it had some decent songs that were easy going and wouldn’t be bad to hear again. Not sure if I’ll seek it out since it felt kind of bland but its execution of simple soft alternative is well done. Doesn’t have the hits like its other album but it’s alright. 6.1/10
за некоторые панчи готов ставить выше, есть интересные находки
3/5 This album was a "leave it" album. As in, take it or leave it? It wasn't bad but it's mediocre and just kind of goes no where. Slowly. The lyrics weren't clever, and the music was just meh.
This I kinda enjoyed! Had some maybe cheesy or dated moments but overall I enjoyed it. Open minded to these guys going forward.
This not something stunning and it will surely be forgotten in a few decades, but it's a somehow nice album with great moments on it. 3 stars and... next!
I listened to this multiple time and it’s really hard to categorize but I liked it.
In comparison to their first album I always found this one a bit lackluster. It does contain some of their most well known songs but even those feel like rewrites of their earlier work.
Not bad, just proper bland.
Såg dem live när denna platta var ny. Oförarglig musik.
Most of the songs sounded similar to each other.
Generally this is the sort of Phil collins-y middle of the road pop rock that really gets on my nerves but there's something about crowded house that makes them a bit better than that. The hits on this are very nostalgic and the only a couple of the album tracks were really bad, the rest being quite enjoyable. I wouldn't seek this out but considering my initial assumptions I was pleasantly surprised.
Didn't think I had heard anything from Crowded House before but immediately recognised their big singles. However, half of the album is god awful. Definitely wouldn't listen to this again, overall quite mediocre. Highlights: Fall At Your Feet Weather With You Fame Is
Weirdly nostalgic for me. Had completely forgotten this, but brought back memories of my mum playing this in the car when I was little. Recognised quite a few tracks I had forgotten existed. Very early nineties soppy sounding I actually quite enjoyed some of this, but felt like I shouldn't be for some reason. Guilty pleasure type thing..... That being said, there were some really shit tracks on this too. If I could ditch half of the tracks I would've given it a higher score. Highlights: Fall at your feet Weather with you Four seasons in one day 3, but mostly for nostalgia sake
Started off good, but became a bit meh. Few songs are worth re-listening to but apart from that not really something I'll go back to. Why 14 songs! Ooof.
Not much to say: I have to say I was met with an immediate familiarity which peaked at “weather with you” which brought back vibes of being on a road trip with my family. After that the album became so boring and I just lost interest completely. Have to give it some credit for being somewhat enjoyable but the rest of the album I won’t be coming back to.
Not a bad incidental music in working time. kinda flat. not demanding attention. Fill a gap sometimes.
Nice to see an Australian band on the list. The album summary was interesting, the music itself didn't keep my interest. Vaguely shitty digs at American culture felt out of place, but hey maybe the artist had a bone to pick.
Mildly pleasant.
first time listening favorite fall at your feet
It's alright.
Amazing hit songs and a bunch of filler
I never played this record before, but I knew quite a lot of songs. Good pop record. It could have been great if they skipped a couple of songs. Favorite song: four seasons in one day.
- solid vibes - Enjoy the Yacht Rock feel of some of the songs - Feels like I’m listening to a classic 10 album but doesn’t hit as hard for me
Seems like basic Alt Rock album. Good but nothing special. Nothing really bad but nothing that gets me going. Reminds me of the Smiths.
Mi aspettavo una roba più rock e più psichedelica, non male comunque.
It was all just a bit boring honestly. I thought it was okay for the most part though, and I might come back to it if I'm in the mood for a slow and melancholy album. Favourite: Weather With You
I'm absolutely obsessed with the cover art for this so I wanted to love it but I found it very generic
Fint i bakgrunnen men litt kjedelig
This was all right. Some good tracks, but overall not my favorite.
Most of the good songs are near the front, with the majority being fairly forgettable. But for bright and fun jangle pop, it's a pretty good effort. I've actually listened to this before and enjoyed it not expecting much. Crowded House is one of the early-alt rock bands like Midnight One where they had a very 80s bright pop style. Nothing stook out to me after "There Goes God" but it wasn't bad, had some cool instrumental parts.
Good Listening!
More than what I thought was a one hit wonder band. Decent listen.
Beautiful melodies, clever songwriting, but doesn't really touch me for some reason - do I feel it is too mainstream? Although, as an Australian, the hits have been all around me for a long time, I've never listened to the entire album - was happy to do that
It's alright
First time listening to a Crowded House album - I remember them having a video that got somewhat regular play on MuchMusic in the first half of the 90s but I can't for the life of me remember what the song was. Otherwise, they were mostly on my radar due to the Finns and Eddie Vedder doing a bunch of stuff together. That all said, I was shocked right out the gate with "Chocolate Cake" as I distinctly remember the song but haven't heard it in damn near thirty years and don't know that I ever realized at all that it was Crowded House! Way cool. Definitely my favourite song on here. My first listen didn't blow me away by any means, but definitely opened an invitation to further listening - I enjoyed it enough that I want to hear it again and perhaps dig a little deeper into their catalogue.
A few pleasant singles in a very long 48 minutes. Woodn'tface.
Fine
Masters of the 3-minute-popsong.
6/10 sounds pretty decent in the background . But the harder I listened to it the more it just sounded kind of.. passionless?
Nothing to really write home about. 6/10
In general I like Crowded House and I'll listen to probably every track from Neil Finn because there's a good chance I might like it. I'm not sure if I've heard Woodface before. The title seems familiar, but I only recognized one track for sure. After this listen, I'm not sure if I'm going to remember having heard this album in the future. The music was okay, but no new favorite tracks.
Not really into this 😬 'Don't Dream It's Over' is an undeniably great 80's song, and 'Something So Strong' was another hit by Crowded House hot on its heels. Sorry, Crowded House... I love you, but this album ain't it, dog.
An ok album, nothing more
Wonderful songs, generic sound at times. Nostalgia definitely plays a role in my opinion as well
Well, it's alright, not going to seek out again, though. A bit like Elvis Costello meets The The.
Standouts: Chocolate Cake, It's Only Natural, Fall at Your Feet Others: Weather With You, 4 Seasons in One Day Rating: 3.5
Had never heard them before. Enjoyed it!
Fun listen. Only ever heard “The weather with you” before. Wouldn’t say anything is amazing, but parts are catchy and I find myself listening to it again and again. Fall at your feet really grew on me.
This is a pretty classic album. Lots of well known tracks. From my listening my fave is that last track, just makes me laugh.
This album is ok. It felt a little too generic to me, like the songs didn't really feel too special to me. That's not to say the songs were bad per se, but they didn't stand out at all. The album came and went, and I just went, "Ok.". 2.5/5 Favorite song: Italian Plastic Worst song: All I Ask
Listened to on 3/1/23 3/5 Favorite song: chocolate cake, weather with you The lyrics were wildly entertaining but the whole album felt very one dimensional - I was shocked how much I liked chocolate cake
Bon album de balade et musique de feu de camp mais style qui me parle moins
104 / 1069 Too much pop - the songs that you know are good are good, the rest not so much.
Du bon rock, très belle production, composition solide, mais c'est rien qui m'a particulièrement impressionné. Respect pour le soucis de qualité
Nice melodies and shit
