Tracks to go back to: ‘39
Boring....gave musical and I wasn't in the mood for that
This is terrible. Two singles that stick out like sore thumbs, the rest is trash.
Dve piesne, čo nemajú chybu a zvyšok je balast. Majú lepšie albumy ako tento.
Probably better than their previous effort and it was interesting to hear Bohemian Rhapsody in the context of an album (it didn’t add much)… and I was probably going to give it a middling mark but then that god awful rendition of the god awful British national anthem occurred and it irked me. It had no musical merit, it had no technical merit, it has questionable cultural associations, and I think it only served as a way of the overgrown poodle trying put himself on the same level as Hendrix.
I fucking hate Queen. Obviously familiar with the singles (which I dislike) but by god the rest of the album is shit - how someone can listen to ‘I’m in love with my car’ and ‘seaside rendezvous’ and tell me that this is the pinnacle of music can absolutely do one. The tone of May’s guitar has always grated on me, and the doubling/harmonies of the vocals, whilst something of a hallmark, sounds horrible. What an awful, awful closing track too. A grand finale to a steaming turd of an LP.
wacky
There are people I love who get a lot of pleasure from listening to Queen, so I am grateful for that, but personally I don't even like most of the singles. As for the filler on this... the car song, the seaside song and the prophet song do at least provide a wide variety of different kinds of trash. Remarkably, the ukelele song isn't even the worst. I didn't mind Brian May's '39' but I can't quite push beyond a 'didn't mind'. Then there is the Behemoth Rhapsody. I don't always hate it. There are parts of it I quite like, and then it always ends up with the scaramouche fandango stuff and I am back to hating it again. The album ends with 'God Save the Queen', of all things, but nothing can.
I’m really sad I didn’t enjoy my time with this, I always thought I’d enjoy Queen. But the songs that are “good” I just truly never need to hear again. It also lessened my appreciation for Bohemian Rhapsody as this lighting in a bottle track, they were trying so hard in every track to make a Bohemian Rhapsody. Idk man, bummed me out.
havent even started it but i'm not a fan of queen so yikes fuck bohemian rhapsody is on this help really thought my least favorite would be bo rhap but seaside rendezvous is a strong competitor oh wow the prophet's song is also upsetting my brain. im just thinking of those singing bubbles from shark boy and lava girl shoutout to my phone for glitching 10 seconds into bo rhap and skipping it<3 most tolerable song: god save the queen
Not huge on Queen Albums - only way to listen is the Greatest Hits
Absoluut afgrijselijk
This was marginally better better than Van Halen. Queen struggles to make cohesive songs and struggles even more making cohesive albums.
Did not listen.
shit sucked man im sorry
Thought i didnt like bohemian rhapsody, turns out i just dont like queen
Strongly dislike this
I feel like liking Queen is an anachronistic fragment left around from days when people didn't know better, like smoking and casual racism.
you guys are complete liars
Stylistically it was interesting (not really in a good way though), a couple songs had a show tunes feel . I think there were only two stand out tracks: You're my best friend, and bohemian Rhapsody. These songs are fantastic, but nothing else worth listening to.
I have no patience for this bullshit but i do like the song where roger taylor is in love with his car and the best friend song is so nice
Outside of Bohemian Rhapsody this album is incredibly stinky
I feel a little bit of a hypocrite for being annoyed at the swings this album takes - usually I love big swings. Unfortunately this is one of the most annoying albums I've ever heard - nearly every song starts off promising and then becomes irredeemable trite. There is one song that isn't annoying, and sorry, it isn't Bohemian Rhapsody. Best Track: You're My Best Friend Worst Track: The Prophet's Song
Highlights: '39 4/10
TAKE THIS NERD
Bof. Nice use of the stereo effects. 1 good song. Rest seems pretentious. 2 stars
God I hate Queen. Everything is either campy as hell or the dullest schlock rock. The a cappella middle of Prophet's Song grates on the ears like a screeching child. Their cheesy lyrics seem to have been written by a non-native English speaker. After listening to this, I had to play two Bob Dylan albums in a row to fully wipe away the blather and remember what adult music sounds like. Obviously Bohemian Rhapsody is excellent but the rest sucks. No more Queen. Please.
I know it says opera in the title so they're intentionally going for this massive sound and songwriting excess, but it just ends up overblown and pompous. Freddie Mercury's vocals are spectacular - what a range and capable of so much stylistic variation. Brian May's guitar sound rules - all squealing barely contained chaos and an amazing combo of technique + melody with creative use of recording tricks for double harmonies. The electric piano(?) sound on Best Friend is funky and fuzzy and the bass is dynamic and lively in a Beatlesy way. '39 is an Irishish folksy jaunt, there are some prog-style tracks, some kind of Elton John piano pop rock. So, lots of interesting elements - but all together its a tedious chore. The songwriting is so maximalist, like just adding more parts, more key changes, more tempo shifts, more tonal breaks is the way to make a song better. The epitome of this, Bohemian Rhapsody, is the most overrated song in the canon - but they also include Love of My Life, a B-grade knock-off of themselves! With a harp fade out followed by a ukelele intro on the next track - stop it. The 70s would be so much better if all these rock dudes had never learned about the existence of opera.
TRASH
Not for me
BOOOO 🍅🍅🍅
I really tried with this one. I did. I just could not give less of a fuck about this band
I hate this. Did Paul McCartney arrange this album? You're my Best Friend is a classic, hard not to like it. '39 wasn't bad! Sweet Lady wasn't the worst Queen song, excellent drums! Is this album turning around? Nope! Seaside Rendezvous may be the worst song on this album. If I never hear another Queen song, I'd be a happy man.
This kind of music is not for me. I only knew 1 song “Bohemian Rhapsody”.
blev homofob av att lyssna på detta album han förtjänade att dö i aids
if bohemian rhapsody didn't happen to be on this album it would not be on this list. My suspicions have been confirmed, once you've listened to Sparks you can never go back to early Queen because the Mael brothers did everything they did only better, smarter and funnier. Mercury's voice is absolutely incredible though, and Rhapsody one of the best songs of all time, but the rest of this album really sucks to me.
Some big hits that I liked -such as You're my best friend. Some weird songs too. Such a strange band.
