A Night At The Opera

Yeah, I mean, this hits all my sweet spots. It rocks. It's huge. It's dumb. It's weird. I love it. If you also love this and you've never heard The Kleptones A Night at the Hip-Hopera, I suggest you do so. This is all good.

I could go the rest of my life without hearing Bo Rhap again and die a happy man. Yet, in terms of being the cherry on top of this overblown, bombastic confection, it's hard to argue with its aptness. Anyway, this also has 'Death on Two Legs', 'Love of My Life' and an eccentric love letter from Roger Taylor to his favourite motor. Oh, plus 'You're My Best Friend', the best thing Queen ever did. Eclectic, stuffed to the gills and, ultimately, glorious. Where's this ambition these days?

Queen’s good songs are so good that they almost instantaneously erase all their mediocre ones. For example, a lot of people don’t know that “You’re My Best Friend” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” are the only two songs on this album. Kinda weird that they called it an album at all, but then Queen was always pretty weird! I mean, you saw that movie right?

There will never be a better singer.

Very grandiose and over-the-top, but in a good way. The hits I knew already, but Death On Two Legs was a nice surprise and might be my favorite songs after Bohemian Rhapsody. Saved Prior: Bohemian Rhapsody Off Rip: Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To...), '39, Sweet Lady, Seaside Rendezvous Cutting Edge: Love Of My Life Overall Notes: I know very few people who don't know Bohemian Rhapsody, and I know even fewer people who don't like Bohemian Rhapsody. The variety of this album surprised me, and it was a lot more campy than I expected. Crazy that Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, Death on Two Legs, You're My Best Friend, Love Of My Life and Bohemian Rhapsody are all on the same album and it doesn't completely not work. That being said, I didn't really like some of these songs, so it goes down as a 3.5 rounded down.

This album sounded sing songy, like a Broadway play. Probably what they were going for, with the title and all, but I didn't think it was their best stuff. Nick's wedding song and bohemian rhapsody both featured though.

Votare Queen è stato complicato perché di base non sono un loro fan, non li ho mai amati né odiati. Ho una lista di pezzi che mi piacciono e ho scoperto solo oggi che due di questi fanno parte di quest'album ('39 e You're my best friend), mentre altri pezzi mi hanno scassato la minchia tipo Bohemian Rhapsody (da adolescente la amavo). L'album l'ho trovato interessante, percorrono diversi stati d'animo, giocano qui e lì, sono dei bravi musicisti, per giunta in quel periodo erano già rockstar pluri-famose e pluri-premiate e si sente. La loro "philosophy of music composing" (me lo so inventato io) mi ricorda molto quella dei gruppi math-core che ascoltavo 5-10 anni fa: praticamente in un album math-core c'era di tutto, bossanova, ragtime, ballate etc, perché più è vario e complicato, più è figo. Qui mi è sembrata un po' la stessa situazione. Ci sono un paio di canzoni che mi hanno fatto soffrire: - Bohemian Rhapsody in primis (Basta!) - Prophet song - God save the Queen (perché vivendo in Irlanda ho imparato ad odiare gli inglesi). Tutto sommato mi sento di premiarli, è stata comunque un esperienza positiva.

Sapevo che prima o poi sarebbe arrivato questo momento. Non ci sono molte parole da spendere, il fatto che i Queen ci sappiano fare sia tecnicamente che a livello compositivo è indiscusso, questo album è anche molto vario e sicuramente personale e originale. Se poi mi arriva/mi piace la visione artistica è un altro discorso. Questo disco mi proietta automaticamente in un'ipotetica cena con Brian May e Freddy Mercury e me li immagino parlare solo loro di quanto sono superiori agli altri gruppi di quanto artisticamente stiano facendo la differenza e gli altri non osano e te vorresti parlare di cazzate ma poi ti senti stupido. Diciamo che si sente che hanno un'alta considerazione di loro stessi ecco. Il risultato per me e più di una volta tendente al cringe nonostante tutti i lati positivi. Per me musicalmente se vogliamo sarebbe pure un 4, artisticamente è un 2, famo un 3 e passa la paura. (Sono consapevole che queste note susciteranno l'odio di tutti)

quello che mi viene da dire è: perchè? mi sembra tutto forzatamente eccessivo ma senza che se ne sentisse il bisogno. Anche gli arrangiamenti che sono sicuramente complessi ma perchè? quale funzione svolgono? a supporto di cosa? Non sono un amante dell'opera e forse non sono il target per questa versione patinata di essa però aspettavo con ansia la fine del disco. A the prophet song dopo 8 minuti di vocalizzi volevo morire.

No other band can jump from heavy metal to cabaret to prog rock with the effortless grace of Queen, and this album displays that with a beautiful smattering of song variety.

man, i was really hoping God Save the Queen was going to be a Sex Pistols cover. i do realize that would've required a time machine, but honestly, i think it would've been worth the effort.

An eternal classic

1-Love the guitar throughout this first song and the structure of the song is very unique which I like a lot. 2- Clearly a jokey filler song but I didn't need to skip it. 3- Ok song with good instrumentation prefer it when Freddie takes the lead vocals. 4- Just a nice happy and vibey song, love the bassline to this too. 5- Country/folk song with some strange vocal breaks. This is probably my least favourite song so far. 6- Really disliked the chorus on this and found the whole song quite lackluster with no progression at all until the very end. 7- This song definitely does at it says, it really reminds me of going to the seaside. I wouldn't choose to listen to it on its own but its an enjoyable song in the context of the album. 8- Love the introduction to this song, and the rest of it. It feels very mysterious and dramatic, which is the style I love from queen. This song could definitely fit into a stage show or film. I think the acapella section in the middle of the song ruins it's listenability for me though. 9- A very iconic and beautiful piano ballad, I don't know what else I can say really apart from the Brian May's guitar in this song is just perfect. 10- This songs seems like it could just as easily have been written and performed by The Beatles. 11- One of if not the most iconic and amazing songs of all time, every part of it is perfect. 12- A nice closer to the album, which summarises the the themes pretty well.

This is a good album. It really mixes genres too - rock and like old timey sounding music - sometimes even treads on country. Freddie Mercury is outstanding. I don't like Queen and I did not like this album. What can I say about an album in which Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the least pretentious on the album. Yikes!!! 2 🌟

first track- killer guitar parts, menacing gritty vocal performance, experimental structure second track- a psychadellic take on a classic British style, quite funny and tongue and cheek third track- hard/ blues rock style reintroduced, much more traditional rock structure, comedic lyrics fourth track- classic queen song, poppy and fun, lighthearted. fantastic songwriting on all tracks so far fith track- folky style with breaks into wierd choral vocals, quite nice but overall most bland track so far sixth track- comes in sounding like led zeppelin, punchy, dirty and aggresive lyrics and vocal performance seventh track- a British summertime inspired piano/vocal ditty, fun and funny eighth track- prog intro using acoustic guitar, whole track builds throughout its runtime, strange acapella vocal lines, very prog inspired ninth track- quite beautiful denounment with just Freddie and his piano, leads on beautifully from the eighth track, almost tear inducing tenth track- airy guitar lines, plodding ukelele, almost like something off of Abbey Road eleventh track- in the running for greatest song of all time, so operatic, amazingly structured with huge tonal shifts that come naturally, iconic moments and performance, a huge number that will be remembered in legend for all time closer- an instrumental of god save the queen, not as dramatic as the former track but still quite a tongue and cheek summary of the albums themes with the consistency in sound

Yaaasssss Queen!!!! I loved this album. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a full on queen album and I’m glad this one was my first. Stylistically all over the place. It misses the mark more often than it hits. Bohemian Rhapsody is an obvious classic but the rest of it ranges from mediocre to complete tripe.

Quite an iconic album. Nice to hear some of the other songs on the album instead of just the hits.

Absolutely a fantastic album. I’d never listened to all of this and it was such a delight to listen to some Queen deep cuts. There’s a reason why they’re held in such regard. This album blows me away.

Beautifully crafted

Bohemian Rhapsody!! Orchestral effects! Brian May guitar riffs! A blending of genres under the umbrella of one album! Still, it gets to be a bit much with the silly lyrics, choral arrangements and overall heaviness. Good for the occasional listen in its entirety… Better deconstructed and placed into playlists. 3.5/5

One of Queens' best. How can you not enjoy?

Another Queen album already? Let's GO. This album has some great songs. Of course Bohemian Rhapsody is the most well known, but they're all great.

I resented having to listen to another queen album when there’s so much else out there in this wondrous world of music. It just got better and better though. Inventive songwriting, completely individual. You’re my best friend and Prophets song are absolute greats. It’s not their fault that Bohemian Rhapsody is so seared into our minds that we fail to remember what a ridiculously good piece of work it is. And why should we?! Nice to take a cold look at it though. It’s good. What’s the point of god save the queen here? Anyone? Is it an ode to Brian may doing it on top of the of the palace or wherever it was. Either way, I’m tempted to knock off a star for its inclusion. I won’t though.

Still amazing

The thing that hit me whilst listening to this is just how overblown and dramatic, histrionic even, Queen sound - and how varied their sound. How do they do this without seeming like they’re showing off (Deep Purple), or oppressively hostile towards anyone who doesn’t “get it” (Jethro Tull). I can’t fully expound on what I think makes them sound so good here, but I’ll try some of it. Firstly, I think they’d have made this album and made these songs regardless of who was listening - so the songs sound completely unselfconscious, and alligned with who they are as a band. And then there’s the tension between Mercury’s style (flamboyant, theatrical, pop-leaning), May’s style (just wants to solo basically. He barely plays unless it’s a really cool riff or a solo), Taylor’s style (to pound the drums as bigly as possible) - and we’ll just assume Deacon was, as all bassists are, just happy to be there. Each member so totally embodies their preferred mode, that the disparate elements suddenly snap and cohere into a totally unique sound. It’s alchemy, and it’s great.

To start, these songs sounded like fragmented misfires with no concept to cohere around. But wha'd'ya know? Another listen and the concatenation started to appear. My mistake was looking for thematic links when--duh!-- they're all stylistic. Which style is... well... basically it's prog--pseudo-classical ideas (virtuoso instrumentalism and long songs broken into movements) fused with thrashing guitars and stomping drums--but not as I know it. In other words, it's good (sorry not sorry Jethro, Purple, Floyd, et al.). And it's good because (didn't I say this about Sheer Heart Attack too?) at the and time as being silly as fuck and gay as hell it's also serious as the dickens. That trio might not be brand new in popular music but where else can you find it in prog? Some have tried, most have failed. These chaps pulled it off. I'm not sure it's ever something that *needed* to be pulled off. But in practice I don't care. While it's on it seems absolutely vital.

Рубрика "Не даром жирными жопами топ заняли". Тупа мастхиар-альбом. Пусть и не каждым треком по отдельности, но альбомом единым. Прям вообще проходняка не завезли, все треки плюс-минус интересные, от середняка до "боже мой, 10/10". Рапсодия, мб, лучший трек всех времён и народов. Туды и музла, и композиционных решений, и смыслу, и работы с языком, и элементов разных жанров завезли, и всё работает, как положено. К ней единственная претензия условная разве в том, что митольный фрагмент "So you think you can stone me..." слишком короток, имхо охуенен, мб больше, чем четверостишие на него выделить. Ну вот полвека прошло, до сих пор вполне актуально звучит. В смысле не по трендам, канеш, но по качеству, по доступности, так скать. Слушать не затем, чтоб знать, откуда есть пошло, а ради того... чем всё закончилось, грубо говоря. То есть решения, что Queen в золотое время напридумывали, опосля в мейнстриме особо развития особо нигде не получили, так и оставшись в своих альбомах. Мб, канеш, цэ тупа продукт своегоо времени, и опосля было как-то нерентабельно особо заморачиваться, дабы повторить. Но мб всё же Queen были ярким неповторимым явлением эпохи, к которому так просто и не подсосёшься. Так что всё же мастхиар из 10.

Full, unrestrained personality. Queen just does Queen so well (I wonder why that is...) and I can't stop enjoying how simply great this is. The compositions are large and perfect for a sunny day. Just radiant, I love them. And the best part is that it never gets stale! Queen keeps things fresh from song to song, such as the lovely acoustic ballad '39 or the soft and sweet Love Of My Life. I would be remiss to not talk about Bohemian Rhapsody which, though sorely played out, is larger than life in it's own way. Overall great album. We could all use a little more Queen in out lives.

love love love Queen

The production is really really good, the instrumentation is amazing but that's about all there is to it for me. The album is built around moments and building up to these moments rather than melodies and I can understand why this would be a 5/5 album to someone who appreciates that aesthetic.

Queen is a great band but not all the dramatic stuff works for me. Still there’s obviously some very good songs here. “I’m in Love With My Car” has still not grown on me.. sorry Roger

Obviously some absolute jams here, but I really liked ‘39, which I’d never heard before, and The Prophet’s Song” was like a Bohemian Rhapsody 2.0 that I didn’t know existed.

Queen were straining at the boundaries of hard rock and heavy metal on Sheer Heart Attack, but they broke down all the barricades on A Night at the Opera, a self-consciously ridiculous and overblown hard rock masterpiece. Using the multi-layered guitars of its predecessor as a foundation, A Night at the Opera encompasses metal, pop, campy British music hall, and mystical prog rock, eventually bringing it all together on the pseudo-operatic "Bohemian Rhapsody." In short, it's a lot like Queen's own version of Led Zeppelin IV, but where Zep find dark menace in bombast, Queen celebrate their own pomposity. No one in the band takes anything too seriously, otherwise the arrangements wouldn't be as ludicrously exaggerated as they are. But the appeal -- and the influence -- of A Night at the Opera is in its detailed, meticulous productions. Au début de l’album j’ai été charmé, du rock innovateur et des chansons de Queen que je ne connaissait pas, Tout indiquait un 4. Par contre, à mis parcours je me suis rappeler pourquoi je ne suis pas un fan de Queen, trop d’harmonie de voix interminable et irritante. Je comprends que c’est la signature, Mais j’aime pas Je l’évite love of my life et good compagny ainsi que tous les harmonies de voix en deuxième partie de l’album Je lévite les 5 premières chansons du rock solide

Queen és un d'aquells grups que m'han acompanyat tota la vida, des que un amic me'ls va descobrir a 1r de BUP. Però aquest àlbum no l'havia escoltat mai sencer. Va ser el primer que els va catapultar i s'entén, perquè està ple de temes interessants, molt ben produïts, i amb la guinda del "Bohemian Rhapsody" al final. El disc és variat i entretingut, amb moments de rock, balades, i fins i tot una mica de country. Demostra el bon moment compositiu en què tots els seus membres es trobaven. Un molt bon àlbum.

I'm not the biggest Queen fan, there stuff seems a little all over the place for me. But, I still recognize greatness when I hear it.

Fantastic album, a beautiful voice with a beautiful band. I particularly liked The Prophet's Song

It's Queen. Some straight bangers. Some very dated cheese. Enjoyable listen even thought 40 years later some of the songs sound like a parody of the era.

Strong lyrics and storytelling. Absolutely fantastic guitar and vocals. Can't say I liked much the songs without Freddy as lead vocalist, I think they actually dragged the album down. Great ability to keep songs fresh by adding variations and keeping them unpredictable. Impressive experimentation with different styles of music, exotic or old-timey vibes and instruments (Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon). Bohemian Rhapsody is an example of sheer musical creativity from musicians that have the talent to carry it to fruition. Loved also the adorable and iconic 'You're My Best Friend'.

An album I should have listened to a long time ago. I picked it up on vinyl years ago. An incredible listening experience, as per usual with Queen.

Odd collection of songs that sound more like an opening act to a vaudeville act than a 70s rock band.

Wow holy jeez, I understand the value of Brian May. This album sounds soooo well produced. First time sitting though the whole album, front to back. Pretty darn good.

A good album, but not the masterpiece I was expecting. Obviously Bohemian Rhapsody is incredible, You're My Best Friend is a great song also, otherwise nothing really stood out for me. 3 stars.

Okay, so this is great. I don’t really know why I haven’t been more into Queen before. This album has a sort of cinematic sound. I loved the quirkiness of the second song. They are so varied! Like, they have so much versatility in their style, and I think it’s fantastic.

Hard not to rate this well. Not every song is a gem but those that are make up for it. I’m thankful that Wayne’s World revived the interest in Queen.

I completely understand where bohemian rhapsody came from now and definitely more into queen than before. It was interesting to hear how many different genres they dove into.

I don’t believe that I have ever listened to a queen album all the way through. I loved this. There is a part of me that feels like if the Beatles had continued and been more odd that this is an album they could have made.

3.5 - Prophet's Song and Bohemian Rhapsody are immense. Extraordinary composition, arrangement and production. john deacon is a groove machine with You're my Best Friend and Love of My life is one of the best ballads ever. Still, a few songs don't really do it for me: Sweet Lady, Seaside Rendezvous, Good Company, In Love with my Car, 39 . They're ok but I wouldn't come back to them.

Erghhhh, was like a 47 minute version of bohemian rhapsody. I couldn’t wait for this to finish. Two good songs and a bunch of weird crap.

Amazing. A work of art. But not the car song

Queen has been so overplayed by this point in my life, it's hard to really get into this. I cannot listen to bohemian rhapsody any more. Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace. I wish I could listen to it for the first time on a record player in the mid 70s. But I was one years old at the time. I understand the history and importance of this.

Hét album van Queen. "Death on Two Legs" is een stevige opener, meteen al die oh zo bekende Queen sound. Qua productie, mix en geluid waanzinnig goed. Roy Thomas Baker heeft daar zijn sporen nagelaten. "Lazy on a Sunday Afternoon" laat je meteen weten waarom het album a night at the opera heet. Dit wordt een pastiche van muziekstijlen. Loopt vloeiend over in het nummer gezongen door Roger Taylor "I'm in love with my car". De gitaarklanken van Brian May geven dit standaard rocknummer nét dat beetje extra . En dan de Wurlitzer klanken op "You're my best friend", pure reclame voor dit instrument. "'39", gezongen door May, een van de mindere tracks op het album maar met een bijzondere tekst over tijddilatie. Toch mooi dat May gepromoveerd is in astrofysica. Lekkere rocker "Sweet Lady" volgt erop. "Seaside rendevouz" is dan weer zo'n maf nummer dat er tussen zit. Niet mijn ding, wel muzikaal enorm knap. "The prophet's song", met ruim 8 minuten een zwaar nummer dat een stuk lichter wordt gemaakt door de harmonieën van Mercury. De vocale delayeffecten halverwege het nummer zijn dikke voorlopers van de resultaten die muzikanten nu krijgen wanneer ze een looppedaal gebruiken. Een naadloze overgang naar het bekende "Love of my life". Pracht ballad uit de koker van Mercury. "Good company", weer een May liedje, die zich lekker uitleeft op ukelele en gitaar. "Bohemian Rhapsody" daar valt weinig over te zeggen. Het album sluit af met een interpretatie van "God Save The Queen" zoals dat alleen door Queen gedaan kan worden: Episch. Herspeelbaarheid: 3 van de 5 sterren

How can the album that bore Bohemian and Rhapsody not to be a five. Love the 70s shredding.

Good stuff

Varmaan Queenin ensimmäinen studiolevy jota kuuntelen. Aika vähän megahittejä löytyy, ja meno on muutenkin melkoisen poukkoilevaa. Jossain vaiheessa ensimmäistä kuuntelua jopa unohdin mikä bändi on kyseessä ja piti hieman mietiskellä että mitäs levyä listalta olinkaan kuuntelemassa. Yllättävän kylmäksi jätti vaikka odotukset oli korkealla. Levyn kohokohtana oli kenties etäisesti tuttu Seaside Rendezvous.

To have you’re my best friend, love of my life, and Bohemian Rhapsody on the same album, is one of the greatest accomplishments in modern-day history. I know this is only the first album that we are listening to, but it’s going to be hard to beat this collection of songs.

Some killer tracks on this album and others more pretentious and meh. Probably a low 3.5

Closer to a 4.5! Great album. Arguably the greatest singer.

Fun, but not my thing

Storslået, kor, karismatisk, 70’er pop/rock, Freddie Mercury

I was blown away by the scope of this album. It's probably best known for its two epics, but that summary ignores the depth and breadth of the rest of its offerings. What other rock project contains a hate song for a former manager, a Bowie-esque space folk song, and a combination Dixieland/ukulele number? All of the experiments work. I have a tendency to reduce Bohemian Rhapsody to a product of Wayne's World fame, and I'm definitely guilty of taking it for granted due to its overexposure. A fresh listen reaffirms its status as a masterpiece, and the thing of it is, it's not out of place on the album. The whole thing is a work of art. Best track: Bohemian Rhapsody

Pretty good, better than I expected but you know what? Bohemian Rhapsody is overrated. There. I said it.

A Night at the Opera presents the final step in what would become Queen's endgame, their transformation into a singles band. But what an album to present to the masses in the changing tides of rock music. This album almost pretty much lives up to its name, from their final turn towards prog madness to powerful odes to love and beyond and the defining song that basically signals their shift towards immortality. One doesn't need to own or listen to another Queen album, this is practically all they need to understand. Favorites: Death on Two Legs, I'm in Love With My Car, You're My Best Friend, '39, The Prophet's Song, Love of My Life, Bohemian Rhapsody.

It's got Bohemian Rhapsody but even without it its is a pretty good album.
