Soul soothing as always
super cool
Awesome voice. Great control.
This was awesome. I had really only heard like 3 kd lang songs before today (Constant Craving being one of them), and I really liked them all, but I had no idea what to expect from this album. I really, really enjoyed it. It was nicely melodic and hummable, and kd's voice is very distinct and nice to listen to, to my ears at least. It was a nice listen the whole way through, and it seemed too short, so I listened to it again, and again a third time. Five stars.
I love kd lang
a rounded down 3 star for my music tastes, less than the cowpunk stuff would be +1 star for meaning a lot to some of my favourite people & for being the style icon that (mostly unknowingly to me) influenced the foundations of what I think is cool +1 star for being from 2 hours east of my home & for being banned on 30+ regional radio stations for having principles get fucked cowards. 5 stars.
Okay, who's going to slow dance with me to this entire album?? Ahh, I adore this woman. I've been looking forward to this one. I enjoyed Shadowland, which I hadn't heard before, but her artistry really shines through on Ingénue. She has one of the most beautiful tones, just a breathtaking voice. Like a rich dessert wine. And there's much to appreciate for anyone who likes to geek out over lyrics. Especially from a queer perspective. Lyrics such as: "My desire / Carries no shame / My will / Will harbour no pain" from Wash Me Clean have more weight to their words considering she came out as a lesbian while promoting this album - a trailblazer in the entertainment industry at the time. She left no room to misinterpret her work. Constant Craving might be the best song; I wouldn't argue against it, but the choice for my playlist is Season of Hollow Soul. The lyrics, such as "Sour the fruit of neglect / The core of my doubt / Deprived are my veins you infect / With or without" are soul-melting. I'm so glad this album was included on the list.
Recognized several songs and enjoying listening to the entire album. Will add to the want list!
Why have I been sleeping on her music? So good. Rich, lush voice.
HONESTLY A VIBE
i have never heard this album before. why is it so good. 5/5
I knew a bit about k.d., but this reinforces the incredible voice and excellent lyrics.
I am so surprised and mildly embarrassed that I love this so much, but what can I do? I'm a Lilith Fair wine mom at heart. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I'm not cool. Absolutely loved this.
Loved it.
This is a no skip masterpiece
k.d. Lang's best album. Classic!
Pre-listening thoughts: I KNEW constant craving was a lesbian anthem. I could smell it. But also every time I hear that song I think of glee cause they bodied that cover Post/during listening thoughts: kd lang has such a lovely singing tone. I reallyyyy hate to give two fives in a row (I’m literally love maxing and enjoyment pilled) but the harmonies! The instrumentation! The lyricism! It’s all there and it’s gorgeous. This style of music is so sitting in a hammock on a summer day but also laying on your cold bathroom tile contemplating where you went wrong. What a classic I mean lesbians really do it best! 9/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: I did! Fav tracks: man another no skip album. Banger after banger Least fav tracks:
This was beautiful. Favorite track: Still Thrives This Love
Lempparit: Constant craving, Season of hollow soul
Loved this! Was not expecting an album like this at all. Queer country? Sign me up!
Nice music, relaxing, good songs
Classic
def the biggest surprise for me so far, i really did not expect to like this based on the genres, but i found it to be quite beautiful and strangely similar to a lot of the more dreamy music i tend to listen to on occasion.
KD Lang is a special treasure. This album is proof of that.
So, my very first impression of this was that it was uncomfortably country. Thankfully this proved to be a short-lived thing and she rapidly became a crooner. A very, very accomplished coroner with a voice made of pureed angels. Way better than I was expecting, although everything felt kinda like it was a cover. Even when it wasn't.
Yes thank you but gross
really really good, her voice is so beautiful and the songs are so delicate. I don’t know how often I’ll really be listening to it but it was really good
I bought this with ignorance. I listed with open ears & expectations. Decades later, I'm still haunted, still quietly taken aback by this. Never mind her earlier debut this site gave, this is the album I am both haunted and graced by still. Superb. 5 stars.
Really good album and artist that I've never heard of before.
fuck with it heavy
Love Lang’s voice
Have always loved this album
nice
I am biased towards lesbians so I thoroughly enjoyed this
A versatile and somehow calming listening about the evergoing topic of love.
Cool, sehr cool
Really like it. Pretty chill
Voice of an angel. So rich sounding and special.
k.d. lang is one of my all time favourite artists so this album is a favourite too. I remember learning something important from it... listening to it when it first came out, I sometimes felt myself wishing k.d. would really let loose and sing the way she can but I realized that she was (I think!) treating her voice like an instrument among the group. It made me appreciate the idea that even though you can blow the roof off with your singing, and people love that!, not doing so can be the right approach for the musicality and emotion of the songs. And helped me appreciate a whole range of other singers when I encountered them later on. Anyway it's gorgeous and emotional from beginning to end.
I LOVE this album! I love the use of the instruments as well as Lang's vocals, and every song is SO amazing! One of my favourite albums out of the so far 44 generated!
Loved this one, was listening to it on the bus form Birmingham airport to the city centre. I foolishly got on the bus instead of taking the train which cost me about half an hour extra of travel time. The production is really nice and her voice is lovely. Giving a 5 cos i'm deffo gonna listen to it again
Absolutely spectacular.
i think this was one of the first women albums we’ve heard?? also one of the saddest, but i loved it
She puts so much feeling into such subtle songs. She probably wouldn't pass the auditions for one of those TV talent shows and their need for histrionic caterwauling. Yet she also avoids the boredom that other laidback singers (e.g. Lucinda Williams) tend to inflict. It's all down to that voice and the brilliant performance of her band.
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: The mind of love, Miss Chatelaine, Still thrives this love, Season of hollow soul, Outside myself, Constant Craving
Her voice should bee on the Land o Lakes label. So beautiful.
I didn't know much about my dad as a person but I knew he was a k.d. Lang fan and he loved Santana. He hated Wayne Newton and the songs 'Born in the USA' by Bruce Springsteen and 'Captain Anarchy' by Anti-Flag. This is a beautiful album and it gave me little glimmers of nostalgia.
I almost had whiplash going from Red Snapper to this album, but wow this was a treat. Never heard of k.d. lang before. But this was really pleasant to listen to. Gentle music and I love her voice. Miss Chatalaine made was great, as was Constant Craving and Save Me.
Just a kiss
I had never listened to this album, but was aquatinted with a couple of the songs though. Lang’s voice is simply magnificent, a total treat to hear the perfect and respectfully restrained use of such an incredible instrument. No modern-day over singing and false emotion. Just absolutely miraculous to sit back and enjoy such a supreme talent.
I’d never listened to k.d. lang, so I had no clue what to expect. It’s really easy to listen to, with a nice blend of styles!
Love K.D. Lang
Wow. A lot better than I thought it would be. Every song is solid. Favorites: Save Me, Miss Chatelaine, Wash Me Clean, Still Thrives This Love, and (of course) Constant Craving
That voice. This is a remarkable record that covers so much musical territory. It feels like the perfect nightclub set. And, that voice. A classic.
So different at the time. So alternative it was our mainstream. Stunning. Gripping emotional languid emotional almost purple and atmospheric - a sound that lasted a decade until we probably heard it too much. Soft samba country blue no genre ... It's so VERY different to occasionally turgid garage boy albums on this list. Yes this is much needed colour, warmth, sensuality and a female swooning voice. Take me to your place and play this.
I had only heard a couple of songs off this album, but the whole thing is gold.
would be six stars if I could.
оо о очень приятьненько :)
She’s the best
I don’t think I’m capabale of thinking about this album critically. She had been a country artist before this album. She was quirky and strange, her songs full of humor. In the three years between Absolute Truth and Twang, she came out as a lesbian and to further alienate herself from a still very conservative musical genre - she became an outspoken animal rights activist. With this album she transitioned to an adult contemporary artist. She was suddenly doing music that more closely resembled what you would hear in nightclub and more likely some seedy French place. The production and vocals immaculate. The album itself is very much about unrequited love and is an emotionally complex work from an artist who not only reinvented herself but stepped out with new confidence and a bit of a cavalier devil may care attitude not accepting compromise with her audience. It is an artist saying this is who I am and my desires and if you don’t like it, I don’t really care.
Suprème
10/10 god damn! the earlier stuff I’ve heard of k.d. lang I didn’t really like, but this is something special southern country really isn’t my thing, but this feels like something so much better I don’t know how to explain it it’s just such a beautiful album
God I love her voice Listening to this reminds me of listening to Jeff Buckley’s Grace for the first time. There isn’t much higher praise I can give an album
4.5 stars
This is where k.d. lang found their voice and their style. A very accomplished album with beautiful tracks and emotional depth. This has definitely earned its place on this list. It was an album. I loved back in 1992 and I still love it today. I think it ends with exactly the right track because it just leaves you wanting to play it more and more.
Lovely.
Love love love
THIS is the kd lang album that 100% belongs on the list. An album with iconic bookend songs and such beauty in between. kd's voice is so strong, healthy, and lovely. She is no ingénue here. This album reflects real work and dedication to her craft. Interesting that this album was recorded in Vancouver. Something about the cool, high-style of the songs is reminiscent of that shiny Vancouver vibe. Ending with Constant Craving is brilliant. I love every breath on this album.
I really like this album a lot
This was gorgeous and lush.
What a delight! Swoon!
Lush, beautiful, and (and I don't use this term lightly) romantic. Excellent songs and a gorgeous voice. A-plus!
Ingénue indeed!!! I loved this album in the 90s and still do. It’s filled with lush emotional torch songs, incredible vocals, interesting arrangements and ends with one of the greatest hits from my days as an announcer on adult contemporary radio. I am still having a love affair with this album!
Highlights are The Mind of Love, Miss Chatelaine, So It Shall Be, Constant Craving. I don't know why I never thought to look up more of her music. It's beautiful, and I love it.
A masterpiece. Just perfect.
I enjoyed it.
hmm. am i going to like this? nice voice. i thiiiink its a woman. yeah it is. this first song is nice but im afraid i might get bored quick. lets see. i love the vibe provided by whatever instrument it is playing at 2:32. her voice reminds me of someone but i cant place it. aw this sounds so nice but im bored :( why am i like this lol. okay i take that back i got into it after a bit and my mood now matches this album lol. miss chatelaine: this song is making me so happy i want to cry lol. wash me clean: her voice sounds so full (?) and comforting :( i teared up. lmao. "shadows now curtain the moon, but faith swears it will shine again soon." idk why i got so into this. typically i wouldnt like this type of music i think. im done and i feel so exposed lol. i feel like i just finished up a long crying session xd anyways uhm i only processed about 1% of this album and i need to listen to it 99 more times to get better acquainted with it. starting my first replay as i finish writing this. saying that i love this album is putting it lightly :)) <3
A lot of the songs on this album sound familiar even though I’m sure that I’ve never heard them before. They’re just really good songs and I get good vibes from them. I love the instrumentation especially the clarinet on Still Thrives This Love. The accordion is also interesting and I like it. Honestly almost everything about this album is great. Not quite great enough to be a 10 because it’s not that mind blowing but it’s still a really solid album. Season of Hollow Soul reminds me of ABBA for some reason but overall this album does sound like it’s from the 90s but aged will. Favorite songs: Save Me, The Mind of Love, Miss Chatelaine, Wash Me Clean, Still Thrives This Love, Season of Hollow Soul, Outside Myself, Constant Craving Decent 9/10
short and sweet
I was predicting this to be another 3, but there's some pretty alright stuff on here that's just interesting enough that I might return to this in the future and check it out more Standouts Season of Hollow Soul Outside Myself 4/5
I never would have believed I would have connected with this album back when it came out in the early 90s, it seemed so grown up and tasteful. Times change though and I enjoyed this more than I expected. I knew two of the singles, but the third single (The Mind of Love) was a real highlight, along with Wash Me Clean, and although there wasn't much stylistic variety, the little touches of quality were everywhere.
3.5 rounded up
I liked this waaay more than I thought I would. Complex songs, great voice. Not to slow or boring. I'll probably never listen to it again but I enjoyed it
suave y melodico 4.5
What a delicious surprise. I thought kd would be twangy country, instead this is surprising and sensual torch singing. It evokes a late night, naughty cabaret. Her magnificent voice seduces, the original songs pleasingly slide by. A four
Pride day in my town! I have this album. It's great.
This album is a little bit out of time...smooth, lush productions of songs that would fit just as well coming from Marlene Dietrich. And what a fantastic voice! This isn't an album I would have picked off a shelf, but I love it.
Excellent album country tinged, well crafted, great voice
Lovely. This remains k.d.’s best album.
Comfort wrapped in a blanket.
Overall: 8/10 I wasn't aware that K.D. Lang did anything but country music, so this was a pleasant surprise! There's so many instruments here used in interesting ways and nothing ever felt out of place. She also has a gorgeous voice that I found very soothing. I might be coming back to this one a lot. Fav Song: Still Thrives This Love
I thought this was gonna be some country bullshit that I would have to suffer through, but this is actually quite pleasant!! I don't wanna listen to this album in full again, but I enjoyed it for sureski.
3.5/5
A very good emotional ride on light pop sound with some country influences coming through. Her singing really shines and brings the songs to life or holds them together. I find a lot of the compositions pleasant to listen to and would be glad to have this album play on easy afternoons.
Nice melodies, a pleasant listening. Not the most interesting stuff I've heard in my life, but good regardless.
Thoroughly enjoyable
Jazzy, pop country? Not a combination I would have expected to work, but it does. Still Thrives This Love and Constant Craving are great. And k.d. Lang has a great voice.
Très bon album !
k.d. lang's second solo album diverged pretty strongly from the country sound she had forged with her previous output (her first solo LP Shadowland and her work with the Reclines), reaching towards a more general pop sound with the Nashville playing more of a background role. I've yet to really dive into her earlier work, but what I will say for Ingénue is that there are quite a few numbers here where a major whiff of jazz peeks through (including multiple songs with legendary mallet percussionist Gary Burton!), which I certainly appreciated. I guess I can see why her fans might have felt betrayed by this, but surely this album has enough merit on its own to merit against being seen as a sellout record, right? "The Mind of Love" might be one of the only examples I can think of where country music crosses over with bossa nova, and it goes over way better than you'd expect from that description. the singles, "Miss Chatelaine" and "Constant Craving", are tremendous as well. lang's vocal phrasing across these ten tracks is really something to behold, and the arrangements by producer Ben Mink put her in such pristine musical surroundings. decent 7/10.
Vildt smukt album! Standouts: Save Me, Miss Chatelaine, Wash Me Clean, So It Shall Be
1. "Miss Chatelaine" 2. "So It Shall Be" 3. "Constant Craving"
muy buen album con líricas increíbles
Finally. A good redeeming album this week. Lang's vocals are absolutely top notch. Music is just quirky enough to be super interesting, and she does a great job of blending styles throughout this whole album. A fantastic addition.
When I saw that Constant Craving, a song I knew and loved, was the last track on this album, I figured it would be a nice reward for the previous nine. What I found was that I thoroughly enjoyed the others, as well. The richness and smooth delivery of k.d. lang's voice, with a folksy, almost spiritual, approach to the songs, made for a pleasurable listen. And just like that, I'm a fan.
A very pretty album, but isn't 100% my thing. Still a very pleasant listen overall. Mid 4.
K.D. Lang’s “Ingénue” shows that singer-songwriters can create great music with simple means, as long as a few essential ingredients are in place. For example: * Catchy song ideas * Arrangements with a good mix of familiar and fresh ideas * An experienced voice with plenty of depth * Professional production The result is usually still not an album I absolutely have to have, but at least one I enjoy listening to. This is actually off-topic, but: Why doesn’t everyone do at least this much? Back to the topic: This is the minimum I expect for an album to make it onto this list—that earns it 3 stars. It gets better, for example, with a song I recognize immediately. So I’m giving a 4th star for the last song on this album, “Constant Craving.” It gets even better, for example, with a dynamic start to the album—well, you can’t always have everything.
Ingénue — K.D. lang favorite songs: Save Me (4:33) "is the opening track with a meditative mood and tambourine playing. The lyrics are based around a plea for salvation through love." Season of Hollow Soul (4:58) "Is a melancholic and mysterious song about finding meaning in moments of spiritual emptiness and loneliness." Summary: the album's genres are pop, cabaret, folk, jazz. there are 10 tracks in total. I really liked it, in the end I forgot that I was listening to the album for the first time, it feels like I'm not. from the Internet: The album is included in the book "1001 albums you need to hear before you die." The record brought lang worldwide fame and a Grammy Award. Lang by the way is a Canadian singer
vibes
Hermoso!!
I liked this a lot, maybe more than I expected. kd has a really powerful, and unpretentious, voice. Shout out to all the gay cowgirls out there.
I liked it
leuk!
why do people hate this
This was such a pleasant surprise, great record and loved the sound even if it is very smooth / adult contemporary it felt like it really worked well for her
Embracing my lesbian roots today, I see.
This is just a really excellent record by a really excellent voice.
Alright, I'm just gonna say it... k.d. lang? Underrated. She's the godmother of every TikTok artist with a lowercased name, she has a great voice and the instrumentals she sings over are classy & expertly-composed. I'd absolutely listen to Ingénue again – looking forward to eventually checking out Shadowland as well! Highlights: Save Me, Miss Chatelaine, The Mind of Love, So It Shall Be, Still Thrives This Love, Season of Hollow Soul, Constant Craving
For a genre - effectively adult contemporary - that is for sure not my cup of tea, I found this to be a remarkably engaging and creative record. KD Lang is an outstanding vocalist, and there is enough sophistication and melodic highlights on here to keep things interesting throughout.
not bad, favs were seasons of a hollow soul and Miss Chatelaine.
Such an incredible voice wow this album has a very specific vibe and if you are NOT a lesbian wine aunt, you are not gonna get it. Which is fine. Go listen to Soundgarden straight white man.
Good voice tbf
K.D. could sing the phone book and I'd be there.
I am not sure if it’s because I listened to this on a lazy Sunday afternoon but this just fitted that perfectly. Obviously I knew the 2 songs constant craving and Miss Chatelaine as they were everywhere at the time but the rest of the album was good too I thought.
She’s sort of under my radar other than hits. Beautiful album
Vibe pop un peu jazzy à la George Michael par moments, franchement une bonne découverte !
Assez sympa
Открытие. Слышал про неё. Слышал хит с этого альбома. Но не более. Альбом ровный, спокойное настроение. Прекрасный вокал.
K.D. Lang's style, part country part blues, almost lounge... it is really kind of nice actually. I just wish in a way that she went deeper with her lyrics, as they remain kind of oddly "crooner" (which of course there are wonderful crooners out there not belittling her). However, she had a shot at doing something positive as a crossover musician but chose the safe route. I don't blame her. I can't. But boy if she hadn't ... Musically she IS a delight. Kinda hard not to swoon to her crooner vibes. Yeah, kind of "lounge" country crooner vibe... it is nice (and very different really than anything particularly mainstream) so it makes it a step above to be sure.
Smooth and laid-back. K d Lang has an amazing voice and she suits the genre perfectly. No particularly standout songs, but just an overall very smooth experience. Would be good music for a French cafe.
Based on other kd lang albums I was not expecting much but this is actually really good. The 90s production style does grate a bit so marks off there 4*
I like this one! Her other album that was on here was awful, country tinged twaddle. This has some proper tunes and a lovely laidback feel to it. I’m pretty sure I had this album but I gave my CD collection away 10 years ago so can’t check!
Entspannend ein Lied kam in die Playlist
bop
new artist for me and such a Greta voice. big fan for mellow evenings
Better than anticipated, particularly middle section
Liked this quite a bit more than expected - great arrangements and I enjoyed her Lang-ourous vocal style. She more than branched out from her Country roots here, but kept the twang.
I enjoyed this far more than I was expecting to. Very lazy Sunday morning listening whilst sipping a coffee and chowing down on a sausage sandwich. It could squeeze in the odd mid morning play at the mythical Café Kelvinos.
Smooth, easy listening, but it's quite charming and her voice is beautiful. I do like the music, it's hard for me to pointpoint the influences, but it sounds timeless. Both the first two songs are good. It feels ready for a movie, or a stage performance. Miss Chatelaine even more so, I'd heard this described as cabaret and now I start to understand why. It's campier than I usually like, but the singing is so good it sweeps you up in it. The pacing is excellent too - now slower, deeper, then more upbeat and dramatic again. Sometimes I think the backing sounds vaguely Middle Eastern, or Mediterranean, but it's all full of pleasant melodies and flourishes. Outside Myself and Constant Craving are probably the highlights of the second half. A positive surprise for me.
A defining album of 1992, showcasing a burgeoning talent in the new country genre. Constant craving is a bizarre choice to close the album considering it’s hit single success, but the songs are satisfying throughout if not extraordinary. Produced by Rush’s mate Ben Mink and is, overall, inspired by Marlene Dietrich.
This is what I thought grown-ups listened to when I was growing up. I enjoyed it a good bit.
Stand-out tracks: The Mind of Love - parts of this track almost feel tropical at times, especially the pure instrumentals without the vocals Miss Chatelaine - jazzy moments and beautiful strings So It Shall Be - the powerful strings on this one are once again really beautiful Season of Hollow Soul - this one stands out as a bit more lively than the others and brings a different kind of energy Outside of Myself - slower, I enjoy the piano in the background Constant Craving - the track with the most momentum, despite being the closer I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying this album. I don't have much to analyze here as most of the tracks did feel quite down to earth with an ocassional mix of jazz, powerful strings and other sometimes surprising choices and ofcourse beatiful vocals. Some stood out more than others precisely because of that, while others felt appropriate for the tone of the album, but didn't necessarily wow me. Although I would describe this type of music as being more on the average side, soothing, but not thought provoking, I have to trust my gut and say that I enjoyed the experience and came out with a few nice tracks to listen to again.
4, lovely and cozy
Really enjoyable album from k.d. Lang. I didn’t enjoy it as much as Shadowland, but it was still a really relaxing album while sitting down cuddled with the dog and sipping on my morning coffee. Albums like this just hit at a certain point of the day, and this was one of those times.
It was really nice. The vocals are really good and the songs serve them well. I don't remember anything however after one day so it has no big impact beyond leaving a feeling of, it was nice
v o i c e :)
Absolutely adored lang’s voice on this record. Reminded me a bit of Joni Mitchell. I thought the country influence would dampen the album, but it worked really well with the production. Never heard of the artist or album before, but I’m glad I got to listen.
This is quite good!! The hits on this album are like... I don't even know where I know them from but they're burned into my memory. Very bizarre
I love this album!! it's really beautiful
Puedo valorar que es una gran banda de música, pero no puedo con el metal.
This was really good. I would definitely give this another listen. It's really not much, but what is here is done really well. It doesn't get boring to me. Just some good music.
Beautiful and moody. I was impressed with this record's radiohead like atmosphere and vocals. Strong 4
That voice... is so smooth and beautiful. The songs are pretty good too. More in line with 90's Adult Contemporary than the Countrypolitan stylings of lang's other album from this list. It may not be something I always go back to. But the voice... what a voice! Key tracks: Save Me The Mind of Love Miss Chatelaine Constant Craving
Started out sounding like a not unpleasant “2” rating. Hard to focus on, a bit too easy listening. But half way through the record it began catching my attention with Season of the Hollow Soul and I didn’t even see Constant Craving coming, a great song I have not heard in decades. So half the album is a 2 and the second half is a 4. Hmmmm K.D. Has an amazing voice but is not flashy at all with it, which I kind of respect…. But I also want to hear her chops. The record has led me to checking out her other work which I do not often do. She is not quite wha I want her to be, but that is my problem not hers. In any case, I have been intrigued so I’ll boost the score up a notch.
Stars high, dips in the middle and then back to great at the end. I had forgotten about Miss Chatelaine. Am I old now if I like KD Lang?
I missed this one at the time, probably thinking that country music wasn’t for me. Past me was an idiot. This really is a gorgeous album, with a stunning vocal performance and restrained musical backing with just a hint of pedal steel and fiddle to nudge it into the vicinity of country music. What really makes this stand out is that it’s pretty clear that this is country music with a queer perspective. Shortly after this album was released k.d.lang came out a lesbian, leading to it being banned by various American Country music stations as well as protests at the 1993 Grammy awards. They were idiots too.
She’s got motion
if i were a middle-aged lesbian i’d definitely loved it more
Liked this more than the other offering
Solid, with some very good songs.
Constant cravimg🥰
So calm and smoothing. I secretly love mellow country music because it makes me feel so warm inside but I've never found a country-pop album that I've enjoyed until this. Lovely voice, big fan of the strings that appear in a couple songs. Doesn't rely on tropes like every other country-pop album. Highlights: Save Me, The Mind of Love, Miss Chatelaine, Season of Hollow Soul, Outside Myself.
Wash me clean y So it shall be, bajan revoluciones. Still Thrives This Love aprta un aroma carabetero y lúgubre que le da empaque al disco. Outside Myself nos va llevando suavemente a la otra punta del álbum, la inevitable Constant Craving...
Better than I expected. Very early 90s sound. Never really made any effort to listen to kd lang. Constant Craving was a big radio hit, and with age, its a decent tune and the rest of the album is a decent, chilled cabaret-style listen. Lang does have a good voice too.
It's got a nice sound to it, and Mrs. Lang's voice is wonderful as well, but I just feel that it's only decent. 3.5 bumped up to 4.
k d lang has a wonderful voice and I thoroughly enjoyed this revisit of such a great album.
KD Lang comes from the same province in Canada, and she is one of Alberta’s best cultural exports. Her earlier work has more of a saw dust edge to it. This whole album is smooth like melted chocolate. Not my usual listening preference but this is really good.
I enjoyed her voice. Not usually a fan of cabaret style music but this was nice. 4/5
I once interviewed k.d. lang for the local paper, and she called me from a private number, so I still have the audio clip of her saying, "Hi, Alex? This is k.d. lang." Anyway, this album is really and her voice sounds amazing.
Music to sit with in the dark wine drunk and crying over a breakup
iz gud
Lovely surprise.
Wow, I have a lot of feelings about this. The first is that I’ve never listened to kd lang, but this brought back such an intense childhood memory of an informercial I’d watch at my grandma’s house. It was a top hits type of CD and it played a little bit of each song. I was probably 10? Constant Craving was on it and I thought “kd” was such a radical way to spell “Katie” and they didn’t even play the whole song, but I would go to school and sing “connnnnstaaaannntttt craaaavvvingg” 😂. Like truly memory unlocked of 5th grade and my friends being like what are you singing and me being like “um, KD LANG”. Okay, so now as an adult… at first I was really turned on by her voice. Like wow a butch lesbian has this voice and is singing things like “I’ll grant you control of my body and soul”. Wash Me Clean and Still Thrives This Love I really liked if you know what I mean🚰. But I don’t know if I actually liked this album? I’m confused? Like it doesn’t quite all work together as an album or the songs are too similar? But four stars for Constant Craving and the elementary school memory unlock… and the voice and strings are sexy
It's 6:00 pm June 1995 and I'm 10 years old, we're at my lesbian aunts' house in the Catskills, all the adults have had a least one cocktail and are smoking cigarettes on the deck, I'm eating as much cheese and crackers as I can because it's still at least 3 hours until dinner. Miss Chatelaine comes on over my aunts' outdoor speaker system and I go and find the CD jewel case for Ingenue and stare at k.d's picture for the next hour. The gay feelings swell inside me - do I want to be k.d? I do, but only for the smoldering butch realness. The music is for the lesbian aunties.
Vibes: 5/5 Instruments: 4/5 Production: 4/5 Emotional Value: 4/5 Storytelling: 4/5 Stand Outs: Save Me, Season of Hollow Soul Overall Rating: 4.2
This was surprisingly good.
Smooth and pleasant. I knew Chatelaine and Constant Craving, but had not heard the rest. Enough variety within and among the songs that it held my attention. I almost deducted a star for the lyric "The ground on which we leave on" in the otherwise excellent Season of Hollow Soul.
Nice
Calm and love the lyrics. Love the voice
Pretty solid but nothing shocking. good vocals. 3.5/5 ~ 4/5
absolutely love Season of Hollow Soul, it has such an ABBA sounding chorus! very cool song. this is a nice and cosy album, nothing in particular stands out until i heard that ABBA style chorus but i quite enjoy cosy albums like this where everything kind of blends together. it works really well for relaxing before going to sleep. absolutely beautiful voice too wow! and the arrangements are amazing. sounding so good. 4.5/5 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
4 stars! Lovely.
I have no smart remarks. I just like this album. It has several songs I like, and no songs I dislike. That's unusual for this genre.
Smooth but original and not kitschy. Precisely executed. 3.6
It is hard to deny k.d. lang's singing and songwriting on Ingénue.
How can you listen to this album and not feel sexy, sultry, and fabulous? Much like a ... dare I say it ... ingenue!
Beautiful voice, brilliant songwriting and musical arrangements. I'm a sucker for smooth, emotive female voices like k.d.'s. Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O'Donovan, Becca Stevens, Joan Armatrading, Joni Mitchell and Petra Haden come to mind. This was a treat. Not paying attention to k.d. lang for all these years was a boneheaded move on my part.
Icon. Amazing that the lead single, and smash hit, is the final track. Unusual sequencing.
didn’t know what to expect but really enjoyed it. reminded me of laufey at times
This really hit. Excellent vibe, great production, and wonderful singing.
Bolji mi je dosta od onog prvog, shadowland
Listening now. Great! Might not come back but I like how clean the sound is.
This was actually amazing I though, great voice and great style
What a lovely album. What a lovely fusion of cabaret, country, and folk. "Constant Craving" alone gets this record 4 stars.
Well constructed lyricism and a deeply affecting voice to back it emotionally. Interesting how this can slip into a place of feeling a bit like an Americana Sade from time to time.
I guess I've never listened to k.d. lang. Did not realize her country influences. Very good
It was pretty good. Much better than I remember the last kd lang album being
sexual no lo tenia ni ahi muy bueno me recuerda a sade pero mas chill todavia
Forgot how much I love her voice. I will revisit the back catalogue
Obligatory extra star for being Alberta coded. But also liked it a lot on its own merit. Not quite as cool as cowpunk k.d. but still cool.
A lot of fun, miss chatelaine was the highlight for sure. Nice mix of different styles of music from a Caribbean drum to a French sounding accordion
Entspannte Musik, die auch gut zum Arbeiten ist…
Pop de cantautor de la época. Un disco muy sólido. 7/10
this is such a thrift store cd to me but so so good
k.d. lang really knows how to use her voice well. Unlike many other writers and singers, she somehow avoids the pitfalls of over-sentimentalizing things or just plain falling into often pointless firework style vocalizations. Her ability to create her own music as well as present covers of other people's is solid in every way.
A musician I've never listened to but know the name of because Sue Sylvester name-dropped her once in Glee. I know she's a lesbian and that's about it. Save Me: Immediately a much more beautiful, smooth, girlish voice than I thought she'd have. It's like a waterfall of voice. A voice I'd like to live in for a while. A voice I'd lay down near and let wash over me. The Mind of Love: So far, this album is living up to its name. With all its pleas for help and saving, she's very much a damsel. It's a lilty sort of music that lends itself to this narrative. At the same time, it's sort of beachy and tropical. She's a really wonderful vocalist, like a Joni Mitchell or something. Miss Chatelaine: This one's more upbeat, a little bit country. But it's also a little bit Italian or American standard, like I could listen to it in a gondola or in a Broadway Show written by Cole Porter. She's got a real classic voice. It's so beautiful and it even suits this more glamorous style. Wash Me Clean: This is almost too beautiful to take in. Wow, it's really just nice. Perfect, even. For what it is. I don't love slow stuff like this, but if I'm in the mood for it, it's wonderful. It's just so simple and real and tactile. Music I could reach out and touch. So It Shall Be: Reminding me of Janis Ian, who is also a moody lesbian I think. Beautiful like a sunrise or something. So grand with such a great flourish but it's not tacky whatsoever. Still Thrives This Love: She's very European mistress in this one. It's like music from a tenement or some Spanish/French/Russian? alleyway. It's a little tragic. Ooh, tension in the strings. Music to dance the calypso to. Season of Hollow Soul: A little bit suspicious. It's got a jazzy twist. The little details are really nice, the breathing and the sweeping noise. Wow, it's just so great. And then it releases into this grand, almost Christmas-y bit. God, it's so great. Gets a little ABBA at the end which I'm never really in love with, but okay. Outside Myself: I don't like this quite as much as the other songs, but I think I'm just a little tired right now. It's definitely still beautiful. Tears of Love's Recall: It's just so royal. It's like looking through a stained glass mirror. Constant Craving: Okay, I've heard this is her big hit and I can tell it's a little faster and more upbeat. You know, I think I've heard this before. God, it sure is beautiful. That "ah-haaaa!" It's just so good. Fade out pissing me off but overall, a great ending to yet another great album. Really glad I listened to this! This is the kind of music that I'd just never go out of my way to listen to usually. But it was so breathtaking. I find most music like this a little boring, especially in long stretches of time, but this mostly escapes that. Still, this is sort of the kind of music I listen to at special times, so I don't know how often this'll be in my rotation, but this is an EASY 4 and maybe even a 5.
Qué maravilla y qué calidad musical. Un gran descubrimiento.
For adult contemporary singer/songwriter music, this was actually a pretty good album. It has a more minimalistic and refined approach, with gentle guitar work, subtle keyboards, and some orchestral arrangements that gives it a sophisticated chamber pop vibe.
This was better than I anticipated.
There's a lot in this to like. I'm between a 3 and 4. It's a lot better than other albums I've given a 3 to so we'll go for a 4. Stand out song - Constant Cravings
Not somethign I would normally revisit, but the songwriting and production is really strong - outside of the historical/cultural importance.
My parents had her other album ‘All You Can Eat’ and about halfway through this I felt a rush of nostalgia from hearing her voice. Good 90s alternative pop. The kids love chill vibes kinda music right? I feel like she should be a bigger household name to this day.
Holy cow, k.d. lang has a gorgeous voice. Really enjoyed listening to this.
Great. Love it.
I’d never listened to k.d. lang before but had the impression her roots were in country music. I couldn’t detect any such influence in this album. Very smooth easy listening without being bland. My favourite track is “Outside myself” which is an outlier on the album - I’d like to hear more like this
Early 90s androgynous pop for the soul.
a beautiful cabaret flavored folk and jazz album that showcases a soothing and rich tapestry of music. Really quite enjoyable to listen to, and it's clear to me why k.d. lang is so well known in Canada.
Really enjoyable album. She has an amazing voice.
Really lovely
It took me a couple of tracks to warm up to this, but by track 3 I was a believer. Her voice is sooooooooo good.
Solid album. Enjoyable background music.
What a pleasant surprise. This is a very mature-sounding and tasteful album. She has a great voice, and the grooves seemed pretty Latin-inspired to me. I'm positive if I listened to this a couple of times, I would completely love it.
A great voice & enjoyable listen.
Constant Craving was a fav in my house growing up, but I'm surprised to hear how twangy some of the other songs on the album are. Still easy to listen to.
Fav: Miss Chatelaine Least Fav: Tears Of Love’s Recall Miss Chatelaine and Season Of Hollow Soul put me in a good mood, I just wish that more of the songs had that vibe but I still like that chill vibe
Quite good. Like the sound, the songs, the singing.
I am surprised how much I like this. Searching for the artist and seeing "Canadian Pop and Country" was worrying as someone who doesn't like a lot of the popular country I hear in passing. But this album was very smooth and a solid work, with rhythms I am unaccustomed to hearing in a country setting (but perhaps I neglected the pop pillar too much). All in all, good album
Not my vibe but damn good production and vocals. Phenomenal
3/4
For adult contemporary singer/songwriter music, this was actually a pretty good album. It has a more minimalistic and refined approach, with gentle guitar work, subtle keyboards, and some orchestral arrangements that gives it a sophisticated chamber pop vibe.
First time hearing this album. I LOVED track 2. Actually, as I'm listening, it's all great. Super mellow, great songwriting, good singing, pretty harmonies. Oh, this is the Constant Craving album, lol. I had no idea. Wonderful album start to finish. So It Shall Be is another one I enjoyed. I'll give this a 4.
This was a pleasant little surprise, given that the only song I know from her is "Constant Craving." I like that song well enough, but the album as a whole was much more in the "old-fashioned chanteuse" style than I could have anticipated from that song. She's got a really pretty, smooth voice that serves that retro style well. My favorite new-to-me song here is probably "Miss Chatelaine;" I love the vintage whimsy of it.
Listening to K.D. Lang sing, you forget how much of an ingénue she truly is. She helped kick off the wave of female singer/songwriters of the 1990s. 4/5
Soothing voice. I liked the music. Very nice.
Entre las grandes voces femeninas, seguramente destaca y no debería faltar. Escuché con placer la música perfectamente pensada para acoger ese nivel vocal. Muy refrescante
Very nice, but the only track I really get into on this album is Constant Craving. Still, there is no doubting the quality of this artist's voice, so the album is getting four stars from me.
Gentle and moody - the alternate country in this normally doesn't call out to me - but I actually liked this record - it's well balanced - with some good stand out songs, and having it's own sound. Plus it actually has a sense of humour at times, and K.D. Lang's voice is gorgeous.
The best thing to come out of this album is the 1993 Vanity Fair photoshoot with Cindy Crawford. The second best thing is Miss Chatelaine.
I really enjoyed this. I love how lang weaves different storylines together. It's an atmospheric album, played out in a very understated manner. Classy, lush throughout.
Very pleasant record, albeit one-note at times, especially in its first half. But never to the point where it turned me off of the record itself. The production is constantly lush and varied, jumping between the baroque and jazz elements I'd expect out of a singer-songwriter record in the early '90s to mostly great results, with my favorite moment being that grand build on 'Season of Hollow Soul'. The vocals also nicely balance these elements of country-rock and vocal-jazz (especially on 'Still Thrives This Love'). I also really enjoyed the writing here, especially on the song 'Outside Myself', which may be the best song here and an emotional powerhouse in the realm of introspective writing. The closer 'Constant Craving' was also one of the more easily enjoyable cuts here, with K.D. delivering this insanely catchy vocal melody. I'll also mention 'Season of Hollow Soul' again, it's a really well-written song. A lot of talent on display here, especially coming out of K.D Lang herself. Canada represent.
Listened during a river walk with jj, real nice and chill for a sunny day.
Surprised by how much I liked this
Fantastic voice with a lot of presence. Some really interest backing instrumentals that shape the songs into genre bending ballads. 8/10
This will be the second k.d.lang album I’ve listened to. I remember being impressed by Shadowland, so I had optimism going into this. Fortunately, the optimism paid off. This isn’t the type of music I’d tend to seek out, but I did enjoy listening while it played today. There is something very calming about the vocals. Mixed in with the instrumentation too, it makes for a pleasant, easy-listening experience. There’s nothing here to blow your mind, but it does make for a nice, cosy sound.
I like this much more than I expected to. The part of me that who’s a bath and some Norah jones really enjoyed this. A little boring she, but calming with a beautiful voice.
enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Solid signing that got me investing throughout.
Choo choo now leaving the station of idk yet type reviews. This is alot. And I enjoyed it. But I'm pretty sure ill enjoy this much much much muuuuuccchhhh more in a few more listens.
This was quite nice, found it be just a real lovely and easy listen. Save Me was a great song and is one that I've actually gone and added to my playlist. Overall, another great country, blues album from k.d. lang!
Fairly excellent album
Like floating in a giant sized bubble bath.
Completely unexpected. I was convinced this was KT Tunstall until I heard it. Most def. not and very good
Solid all around, fantastic mix of sounds.
first listen really liked it
Great album I'd never listened to before.
i loved this one dearly, and truly was sad when it was over. wish it was much longer
Give me a crooning lesbian singing 12 sultry songs, and I’m going to enjoy it. Sure, I think k.d. lang’s unique blend of cowboy country, lounge cabaret, and an adult contemporary interpretation of sophist-pop is the perfect genre mix for me, and lang has a golden voice, but it’s also not that deep. Ingénue is great not because it’s groundbreaking; it’s great because it just has some really great songs. While I think there’s a couple low-points of softness that lean toward the bland (e.g. “Wash Me Clean,” “Still Thrives This Love”), those half-steps down are balanced out by the consistency of the rest of the record, especially the high-points that made me legitimately cry, like “The Mind of Love” and “Season of Hollow Soul.” I get how this isn’t for everyone, but this is very much for me.
Favorite Track: Constant Craving
76/100. Ingénue by k.d. lang is a great and smooth record. The album is well-crafted and very relaxing, with songs that keep you intrigued from start to finish. Each track flows effortlessly into the next, creating a calming and engaging listening experience. Overall, Ingénue is a solid album that’s perfect for unwinding while still offering enough variety to hold your attention.
she's yearning!
Och, jaka perełka. Klimatyczna. Jakaś taka osobista i romantyczna. Nigdy wcześniej nie słyszałam o tej artystce, ale na pewno będę wracać. 8/10
Album 669 of 1001 k.d. lang - Ingenue (1995) Rating : 4 / 5 I like this album. A little less country and little more pop, cabaret, and jazz. She is an excellent vocalist.
I am about to go through so many albums today. Through my album journey today to catch back up, this would’ve been a great option for the last one to listen to(and I don’t mean that in a bad way). k.d. lang had such a calming essence about the music they created here. The entire album is just warmth. It’s soothing and relaxing to listen to and the way they sprinkle in some international elements into the songs is amazing. Overall, this was a beautiful piece of art. With that being said, I’m not sure I would listen to it entirely again, but I’m happy ears had the chance to hear it at least once.
Nice indie album to start with. K.d’s voice is quite incredible. Very clear and relaxing to listen to. I give it a 7/10
Wonderfully peaceful album!
Incredible Canadian album. Not only does kd have a lovely voice, but her backup singers add some wonderful warm harmonies too. Save Me The Mind of Love Miss Chatelaine Still Thrives This Love *** Season of Hollow Soul *** (cool sax line) Constant Craving
k.d. lang owes me a lot of money. She has been living rent free in my head for over 30 years. Her performance of Constant Craving at the 93 Grammys has stuck with me since I was 7 for some reason. I've never been to therapy but I suspect her short hair ( along with Rae from Free Willy) were the start of something. At any rate, I've also never bothered looking for anything other than "constant craving" in all this time. It has always been the song for her. I did like most of the album as well. Accordion made some of the songs sound somewhat European in a good way. Pretty solid from top to bottom. I went back to rewatch the Grammy performance and couldn't help but think she kind of looked like if all 3 Friends boys had a baby. I don't mean any disrespect, was just a playful observation. Favorite track "Constant Craving" 4/5
Soft, slow, and country-ish isn't usually my thing, but this one just hit the right spot. Some songs came and went without leaving an impression, but most of them were quite nice
Constant Craving sits oddly at the end of the album, which up until this point is a collection of smart tunes delivered by a beautiful voice. Didn't expect to enjoy it this much. And the it lifts with the closer, a heartbreaking love song.
ethereal!
I can't remember the last time I heard a voice as clear and crystal clear as this one! It's so nice to listen to. The album is so good that it's almost impossible to find any flaws. I'm giving it 4 stars for personal taste reasons: it's not something I'll listen to every day. But as a music lover, it definitely matches the theme of the site and it's definitely an album to listen to before you die!
God I love sad lesbian music
"Ingénue" is the second studio solo album by Canadian singer k.d. lang. Pop, country, folk and jazz are the Wiki-listed genres and they all fit. This album has a more cabaret tone than her more country earlier work. The album was produced by Greg Penny, Ben Mink and lang. Mink and lang were the writing partners for most of the songs. It was her most successful album on the pop charts reaching #3 in the UK and #18 in the US. "Save Me" opens the album. A giddy-up drum beat, slide guitar, piano and a xylophone (not the last time) . lang's vocals and the harmonies are subtle. Sort of a dreamy country fusion. "The Mind of Love" moves things in a more pop direction. Acoustic guitar and bossa nova beat. lang is talking to herself; why does she fight and hurt herself. The second single "Miss Chatelaine" was a homage to Lawrence Welk. My grandfather made me watch Lawrence Welk; I think I'd like it much more now. Anyway, this song tosses in an acoustic guitar, strings, a Latin beat and an accordion. And it works. One of the best songs on the album is "So It Shall Be." A song that builds. Isolated vocals, nice harmonies. Oh, yeah that xylophone again. She's longing for a person. The album ends with lang's big one "Constant Craving." lang's vocals, the backing vocals and harmonies soar. Strings, acoustic guitar, accordion and a xylophone interlude. Yearning, longing is an inevitable part of life. This album has a bigger sound than her debut. There's pop, baroque, cabaret, ballads and jazz. Creative uses of instruments. I also sensed Spanish, Latin and Middle Eastern influences. A high level of production specifically on the harmonies and backing vocals. But, of course, the focal point of the album is lang's vocals - emotional and adaptable to any style. This is a very good album and worth a listen beyond "Constant Craving."
Lovely voice and nice melodies.
Really calming and comforting music, makes you feel good and light. Like a big hug or a big blanket. No big emotions. I think we all desperately need it. Also reminded me of Julie London.
Solid. I was kind of expecting a country album, but there are only tinges of it here. There's just as much baroque pop here, and it sounds great. Honestly, I don't find the lyrics to be particularly compelling, and I do feel that a lot of the songs blend into each other. But it's a good vibe. Fav tracks: Save Me, Season of Hollow Soul, Outside Myself, Constant Craving
I feel sometimes I forget that one of the more exciting aspects of doing this project is finding music that I never would have found on my own. I don’t know how obscure k.d. lang is in the musical landscape, but she wasn’t ever really on my radar. The genres for this album alone are all over the place. Pop, country, folk, jazz and apparently new wave? What is this shit, I asked prior to jumping in. I wasn’t expecting much at all. But this album blindsided me. This album is smooth, mostly thanks to k.d.’s outstanding vocals and the stellar production. I understand that most will find this kind of stuff boring or background material and I respect that opinion. I might even say that some of the middle tracks did kind of drag a bit, hence why this won’t be part of my 5-star gang. But in my opinion, it’s a lot better than what I was expecting. Favorite track: Constant Craving Other hits: Save Me, Season of Hollow Soul, Miss Chatelaine, Outside Myself
i prefer her more country stuff but Constant Craving is an absolute banger
Very nice and smooth
The album really started to stick with me more and more as it went on. Then, of course, the "hit" at the end seals it. I have not been a big fan of k.d. lang, but this album really plays to her strengths. Ben Mink was a great collaborator for her here. I guess I always thought of her more in the country vein, which I do not know why. This is obviously firmly planted in the 90s pop genre. She really brought some interesting ideas here. Top tracks: "Constant Craving," "Outside Myself," "Save Me"
What a lovely voice. My favourite song was Miss Chatelaine.
Really enjoyable actually. There was a kind of clarity to this album, each song really setting its mood
i actually also really liked this one a lot and had a lot of tracks on here that may work there way into some playlists, hidden gem for me i would’ve never listened to this on my own so it’s cool i did here
have you ever heard a song and it ever reminded you of the beach that's what this album reminds me of I think its good and in the beginning it kinda has like a calm day at the beach and it also kinda reminds me of SpongeBob because of the beachy sound in the album i think the lyrics are okay but I don't really like rham I I more like how the instruments are and the beachy sound I think this album is good because of the beachy sound in the beginning I would recommend listening to this album.
k.d. lang is a treasure
Really enjoyed this. Her voice is lovely and the music was great. All in all, a really strong album
Beautiful voice. 4
What a wonderful album. Beautiful songs, interesting arrangements and chord progressions, tight musicianship, crisp voice, just an excellent album all around.
Really enjoyed this!
This album deserves a 4 but depending on my mood I could totally give this a 3 and be okay with that. There's a couple songs that are kinda upbeat like track 3 and track 7, but otherwise it's all slower stuff. Thats not really a bad thing but when it's an entire album of that it can get a little old by the end. She does a great job with the slower stuff, has a great voice. Track 7 was my personal favorite off this album.
great, smooth vocals. nice blend of sounds. enjoyed this listen
“Miss Chatelaine”, “Still Thrives This Love”, “Season of Hollow Soul”, “Constant Craving” Though the musk of 90’s, adult contemporary, Canadian radio haunts this album, Ingenue is too eclectic & self-aware to fade into the background like some other 90’s pop
Another album I adore. I know it’s kind of the cliche k.d. lang album to pick, but I do very much love it. So there.
I never really listened to KD Lang. I enjoyed this a lot.
This woman’s voice is obscenely perfect. I don’t want to love this, but I can’t resist. My cat adores Miss Chatelaine. This is very nice and I enjoyed it. But the other record of hers is better, and enough for this list. 4/5
I was wondering why I liked this album more than everyone else on this website, then did further research and realized it’s because I’m a lesbian
Now having struck out on her own, k.d. lang unfurls her flag to showcase a more yearning, pining and romantic side to her in Ingenue; perhaps the perfect album title for the varying objects of her desire that were boldly and bravely lain bare for her time. The album throughout leaves enough of a hook on the listener to leave them impressed and eventually come back for more. Favorites: Save Me, The Mind of Love, Miss Chatelaine, So It Shall Be, Still Thrives This Love, Season of Hollow Soul, Constant Craving.
Overall a really solid album, but it's crazy how much more work it feels like went into "Constant Craving" in terms of production and layers.
It's kinda lounge music with the slightest touch of country, but it sounds nice.
